Abstract
The abiu-do-mato (Pouteria caimito) is a fruit highly valued by Amazonian populations; however, its chemical composition and properties remain largely unexplored. This study aimed to fill this gap by analyzing the fruit's chemical profile and evaluating its antioxidant and cytotoxic properties. The research assessed proximate composition through physicochemical analysis, mineral content via atomic absorption spectrophotometry, and antioxidant activity using DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays. Total phenolic content was determined with the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, while fatty acid and volatile compound profiles were identified using GC-MS. Additionally, NMR and HRMS were employed to characterize the chemical composition of the pulp and peel, and cytotoxicity was evaluated in vitro. Results showed that the peel contained the highest levels of antioxidant activity and phenolic compounds, followed by the pulp and seeds. GC-MS analysis of hexane extracts identified 19 compounds, primarily volatiles and fatty acids, with palmitic, elaidic, and linoleic acids being the most abundant. Methanolic extracts revealed 17 compounds, including catechin and its derivatives. Cytotoxicity assays indicated no toxic effects on the tested cells. These findings enhance the understanding of Pouteria caimito, highlighting its nutritional potential and possible applications in food and health-related industries.

Abstract
Hydrazine (N2H4) has been extensively utilized as a highly reactive chemical reagent. However, it is also seriously harmful to human beings and ecosystem. Thus, the development of an efficient detecting method for hydrazine is desirable. Here, caffeic acid was chose as starting material to synthesize a new ratiometric fluorescent probe HPA for detecting hydrazine. This probe possessed the specific recognition ability for hydrazine over other analytes with low detection limit (0.106 µM) and extremely short time (60 s). The sensing mechanism of probe HPA for hydrazine was proved by 1H NMR titration and theoretical calculations. In addition, the probe HPA was loaded on paper strip for rapid quantitative detection of hydrazine with the aid of a software (Image J). The effective detecting performances of probe HPA for hydrazine were verified in environmental water samples as well as in living cells. Thus, HPA has great potential for detection and analysis of hydrazine in health supervision and environmental protection.

Abstract
Baru (Dipteryx alata Vogel), a fruit native to the Brazilian Cerrado, has gained scientific interest due to its nutritional potential and commercial value. Its edible seed, of high commercial value, represents around 5 % of the fruit. On the other hand, its pulp, a byproduct of the baru processing industry, is normally discarded, generating a huge volume of waste with reported antioxidant properties. This study investigates the composition and bioactive properties of baru pulp, aiming to identify the antioxidant components in this byproduct. Our analysis revealed that baru pulp is rich in sugars (41.86 %), fiber (29.12 %), and essential minerals, along with commercially valuable bioactive compounds such as trigonelline (139.10 mg 100 g-1), tannins (429.16 mg tannin equivalent 100 g-1), vitamin C (109.57 mg 100 g-1), and phenolic compounds such as trans-cinnamic acid (5.91 mg 100 g-1), chlorogenic acid, and gallic acid (1.07 mg 100 g-1). Industrially relevant sesquiterpenes, such as α-copaene and bicyclogermacrene, account for 42.75 % of the volatile profile, alongside germacrene D (11.69 %), aromadendrene (9.05 %), α-cubebene (6.84 %), β-elemene (5.90 %), and ledene (5.82 %), which are commonly used in essential oil production from other food matrices. While further studies are required to optimize extraction methods, these findings highlight baru pulp as a promising and low-cost alternative to traditional sources of bioactive compounds, with potential applications in functional food formulations and sustainable industrial processes. Specifically, the use of in natura pulp or its flour for food enrichment is recommended, supporting sustainability through the valorization of agro-industrial waste.

Abstract
Morus nigra L., commonly known as black mulberry, is a significant plant species in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. It is also considered an Unconventional Food Plant with potential applications in nutrition. The diversity of bioactive compounds present accounts for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antitumor properties. Thus, this study aimed to analyze technological and scientific information on M. nigra by examining patent documents and scientific papers. The European Patent Office®, the National Institute of Industrial Property®, and Scopus® were utilized as research sources, employing the search terms "Morus nigra" for the former two and "Morus nigra" and "food" for the latter. A total of 210 documents were validated for the research. China leads in patent applications (44%), while Turkey leads in scientific publications (30%). Patents are concentrated in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food, and beverages, while scientific publications in the areas of Agriculture and Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology. The global blackberry trade is on the rise, attracting significant interest from multinational companies. Therefore, academic research and technological innovation must keep pace with market demand, given the promising use of black mulberry.

Abstract
One of the principal byproducts of coffee roasting is the coffee parchment. It is abundant in bioactive substances, including derivatives of chlorogenic acids, which are well-known for their exceptional antioxidant effects. It is advantageous to use environmentally friendly extraction techniques on such residues since it adds value to the entire coffee production process supply chain. The aim of this work was to assess and enhance the ability of non-conventional extraction techniques to extract derivatives of chlorogenic acid from coffee parchment. A central composite design was used to maximize the recovery of those phenolic compounds. The optimized extraction conditions were with 5 min extraction period, at a temperature of 70 °C, and 80% ethanol in the extractor solvent. In this conditions extraction recovery of chlorogenic acids was of 0.8% by the use of microwave-aided extraction (MAE). The optimized conditions are practical, economical, and ecologically friendly method to extract phenolic compounds and, consequently, underscores the potential for sustainable utilization of coffee parchment, offering a valuable contribution to the development of environmentally conscious strategies within the coffee industry.

Abstract
Inflammation is the physiological response of the immune system to injury or infection, typically manifested by local tissue congestion, swelling, heat, and pain. Prolonged or excessive inflammation can lead to tissue damage and the development of many diseases. The anti-inflammatory effects of natural ingredients have been extensively researched and confirmed. This study investigated the effects of Chlorogenic acid (CGA) isomers -- 3-Caffeolyquninic acid (3-CQA), 4-Caffeolyquninic acid (4-CQA), and 5-Caffeolyquninic acid (5-CQA) -- on the inflammatory response and oxidative stress reaction induced by LPS in RAW264.7 cells. Overall, 3-CQA exhibited the most significant reduction in levels of TNF-α, IL-6, NO, and ROS. 4-CQA showed superior inhibition of TNF-α compared to 5-CQA (p < 0.05), while no significant difference in other parameters. We further used DARTS and CETSA to demonstrate that CGA isomers have stable affinity with AKR1B1. As a positive control, the AKR1B1 antagonist epalrestat exhibited similar effects to the CGA isomers. 3-CQA having the smallest half-inhibitory concentration (IC50) for AKR1B1, while 4-CQA and 5-CQA have similar values. AutoDock simulations of the docking conformations revealed minimal differences in the average binding energies of the CGA isomers. The main differences were that VAL47 formed a hydrogen bond with 3-CQA, whereas GLN49 formed hydrogen bonds with 4-CQA and 5-CQA. Additionally, the number of hydrophobic bonds involving PHE122 and LEU300 varies. Our conclusion is that differences in non-covalent interactions result in the varying inhibitory abilities of CGA isomers on AKR1B1, which further affect the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of CGA isomers.

Abstract
Phosphate is widely used in industry and agriculture fields. However, excess accumulation of PO43- causes several adverse effects on the human body and ecological environment. Consequently, it is important to develop a simple method for the detection of PO43- concentration in the ecological environment and in vivo. Herein, two caffeic acid derivative-based fluorescence probes (BAM-HM and BAM-HH) were developed for the detection of phosphate. The BAM-HM probe could detect phosphate via fluorescence enhancement at 500 nm, with the detection limit being 0.612 µM. Meanwhile, the BAM-HH probe showed a significant turn-on signal at 450 nm after the addition of phosphate, and the detection limit was calculated to be 0.318 µM. The sensing mechanism was determined by 1H NMR and MS. Furthermore, the two probes (BAM-HM and BAM-HH) were applied for PO43-detection in living cells and water samples.

Abstract
Caffeic acid (CA) is a polyphenol belonging to the phenylpropanoid family, commonly found in plants and vegetables. It was first identified by Hlasiwetz in 1867 as a breakdown product of caffetannic acid. CA is biosynthesized from the amino acids tyrosine or phenylalanine through specific enzyme-catalyzed reactions. Extensive research since its discovery has revealed various health benefits associated with CA, including its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. These effects are attributed to its ability to modulate several pathways, such as inhibiting NFkB, STAT3, and ERK1/2, thereby reducing inflammatory responses, and activating the Nrf2/ARE pathway to enhance antioxidant cell defenses. The consumption of CA has been linked to a reduced risk of certain cancers, mitigation of chemotherapy and radiotherapy-induced toxicity, and reversal of resistance to first-line chemotherapeutic agents. This suggests that CA could serve as a useful adjunct in cancer treatment. Studies have shown CA to be generally safe, with few adverse effects (such as back pain and headaches) reported. This review collates the latest information from Google Scholar, PubMed, the Phenol-Explorer database, and ClinicalTrials.gov, incorporating a total of 154 articles, to underscore the potential of CA in cancer prevention and overcoming chemoresistance.

Abstract
Phenolic acids still gain significant attention due to their potential antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties. In this study, we have investigated the antimicrobial of six phenolic acids, namely chlorogenic, caffeic, p-coumaric, rosmarinic, gallic and tannic acids in the concentration range 0.5-500 μM, against Escherichia coli and Lactobacillus rhamnosus. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide colorimetric assay. Additionally, the cytotoxic effects of these phenolic acids on two cancer cell lines, the colorectal adenocarcinoma Caco-2 cell line and Dukes' type C colorectal adenocarcinoma DLD-1 cell line was examined. To further understand the molecular properties of these phenolic acids, quantum chemical calculations were performed using the Gaussian 09W program. Parameters such as ionization potential, electron affinity, electronegativity, chemical hardness, chemical softness, dipole moment, and electrophilicity index were obtained. The lipophilicity properties represented by logP parameter was also discussed. This study provides a comprehensive evaluation of the antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity of six phenolic acids, compounds deliberately selected due to their chemical structure. They are derivatives of benzoic or cinnamic acids with the increasing number of hydroxyl groups in the aromatic ring. The integration of experimental and computational methodologies provides a knowledge of the molecular characteristics of bioactive compounds and partial explanation of the relationship between the molecular structure and biological properties. This knowledge aids in guiding the development of bioactive components for use in dietary supplements, functional foods and pharmaceutical drugs.

Abstract
Passion fruits, renowned globally for their polyphenolic content and associated health benefits, have enjoyed growing attention from consumers and producers alike. While global cultivar development progresses, Australia has pioneered several native cultivars tailored for its distinct planting conditions. Despite their cultivation, comprehensive studies on the phenolic profiles and antioxidant capacities of these Australian-native passion fruits are notably lacking. This study aims to investigate and compare the polyphenolic content present in the by-products, which are peel (L), and consumable portions, which are the pulp and seeds (P), of four indigenous cultivars: 'Misty Gem' (MG), 'Flamengo' (FG), 'Sweetheart' (SW), and 'Panama' (SH). Employing LC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS for profiling, a comprehensive list of polyphenols was curated. Additionally, various antioxidant assays-DPPH, FRAP, ABTS, RPA, FICA, and •OH-RSA-were performed to evaluate their antioxidant potential. A total of 61 polyphenols were identified, categorized into phenolic acid (19), flavonoids (33), and other phenolic substances (9). In the antioxidant assays, the SHP sample exhibited the highest •OH--RSA activity at 98.64 ± 1.45 mg AAE/g, while the FGL sample demonstrated prominent DPPH, FRAP, and ABTS activities with values of 32.47 ± 1.92 mg TE/g, 62.50 ± 3.70 mg TE/g, and 57.84 ± 1.22 mg AAE/g, respectively. Additionally, TPC and several antioxidant assays had a significant positive correlation, including DPPH, FRAP, and ABTS. The Australian-native passion fruits revealed distinct polyphenolic profiles and diverse antioxidant capacities, establishing a foundation for deeper health benefit analyses. This study accentuates the significance of understanding region-specific cultivars and their potential nutraceutical applications.

Abstract
Aflatoxins are harmful natural contaminants found in foods and are known to be hepatotoxic. However, recent studies have linked chronic consumption of aflatoxins to nephrotoxicity in both animals and humans. Here, we conducted a systematic review of active compounds, crude extracts, herbal formulations, and probiotics against aflatoxin-induced renal dysfunction, highlighting their mechanisms of action in both in vitro and in vivo studies. The natural products and dietary supplements discussed in this study alleviated aflatoxin-induced renal oxidative stress, inflammation, tissue damage, and markers of renal function, mostly in animal models. Therefore, the information provided in this review may improve the management of kidney disease associated with aflatoxin exposure and potentially aid in animal feed supplementation. However, future research is warranted to translate the outcomes of this study into clinical use in kidney patients.

Abstract
The Sapotaceae family encompasses the genus Pouteria spp., comprising approximately 1,250 species of fruits cherished by consumers for their delightful assortment and flavors. Over the years, extensive research has been devoted to exploring the natural bioactive compounds present in these fruits, with the primary goal of preventing and/or mitigating the risk of degenerative diseases. Despite their widespread popularity in numerous countries, the chemistry, nutritional content, and biological potential of these fruits remain relatively unexplored. This comprehensive review aims to shed light on the principal volatile and non-volatile chemical components found in Pouteria fruits, which present notable antioxidant properties. By doing so, a broad perspective on the current trends in characterizing these compounds and their potential applications were provided, as well as the associated health benefits. Additionally, the prospects and potential applications of Pouteria fruits in the food industry were explored herein.

Abstract
The specificity detection of Al3+ is important for monitoring life health and environmental pollution. A fluorescence enhancement probe based on caffeic acid HAM was synthesized for detecting Al3+ with high sensitivity and good selectivity. When Al3+ was added in the aqueous solution of HAM, the formation of HAM-Al3+ complexes inhibited the PET process, which led to great enhancement of fluorescence. The addition of other metal ions cannot induce the change of fluorescence intensity. The sensing mechanism was proved by 1H NMR titration, MS, and Job's plot. Moreover, probe HAM exhibited excellent properties, such as high sensitivity (LOD = 0.168 μM), fast response time (30 s), wide pH range (3-11), and good interference ability. Based on the above results, probe HAM was used to explore its bioimaging application in biological samples.

Abstract
Phenolic compounds and flavonoids are potential substitutes for bioactive agents in pharmaceutical and medicinal sections to promote human health and prevent and cure different diseases. The most common flavonoids found in nature are anthocyanins, flavones, flavanones, flavonols, flavanonols, isoflavones, and other sub-classes. The impacts of plant flavonoids and other phenolics on human health promoting and diseases curing and preventing are antioxidant effects, antibacterial impacts, cardioprotective effects, anticancer impacts, immune system promoting, anti-inflammatory effects, and skin protective effects from UV radiation. This work aims to provide an overview of phenolic compounds and flavonoids as potential and important sources of pharmaceutical and medical application according to recently published studies, as well as some interesting directions for future research. The keyword searches for flavonoids, phenolics, isoflavones, tannins, coumarins, lignans, quinones, xanthones, curcuminoids, stilbenes, cucurmin, phenylethanoids, and secoiridoids medicinal plant were performed by using Web of Science, Scopus, Google scholar, and PubMed. Phenolic acids contain a carboxylic acid group in addition to the basic phenolic structure and are mainly divided into hydroxybenzoic and hydroxycinnamic acids. Hydroxybenzoic acids are based on a C6-C1 skeleton and are often found bound to small organic acids, glycosyl moieties, or cell structural components. Common hydroxybenzoic acids include gallic, syringic, protocatechuic, p-hydroxybenzoic, vanillic, gentistic, and salicylic acids. Hydroxycinnamic acids are based on a C6-C3 skeleton and are also often bound to other molecules such as quinic acid and glucose. The main hydroxycinnamic acids are caffeic, p-coumaric, ferulic, and sinapic acids.

Abstract
Hydroxycinnamoyl-quinic acids (HCQAs) are polyphenol esters formed of hydroxycinnamic acids and (-)-quinic acid. They are naturally synthesized by plants and some micro-organisms. The ester of caffeic acid and quinic acid, the chlorogenic acid, is an intermediate of lignin biosynthesis. HCQAs are biologically active dietary compounds exhibiting several important therapeutic properties, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and other activities. They can also be used in the synthesis of nanoparticles or drugs. However, extraction of these compounds from biomass is a complex process and their synthesis requires costly precursors, limiting the industrial production and availability of a wider variety of HCQAs. The recently emerged production through the bioconversion is still in an early stage of development. In this paper, we discuss existing and potential future strategies for production of HCQAs.

Abstract
With the explosive growth of the dietary supplements industry, new demands have emerged that cannot be faced with the sophisticated instrumentation available in well-equipped laboratories. In particular, there is a demand for simplified and easy-to-use instruments, capable of providing results in short times of analysis. In this study, a hand-portable miniaturized liquid chromatograph (portable LC) has been tested for the determination of chlorogenic acids (CGAs) in products intended to supplement the diet and elaborated with green coffee extracts. CGAs offer several health benefits due to their antioxidant properties, and an increasing number of dietary supplements are marketed with claimed high contents of these compounds. The results obtained with the proposed portable LC approach have been compared with those obtained with two other miniaturized benchtop liquid chromatography instruments, namely, a capillary liquid chromatograph (capLC) and a nano liquid chromatograph (nanoLC). Although compared with the methods that used the benchtop instruments, the sensitivity attainable was lower, the portable LC instrument provided a comparable analytical performance for the quantification of the main GCAs at low mg g-1 levels, and it was clearly superior in terms of speed. The proposed portable LC-based method can be applied to assess the content and distribution profile of the predominant CGAs in this kind of dietary supplement. It can be also used to estimate the antioxidant power due to CGAs, as well as their preservation state.

Abstract
Fruits and vegetables are a source of a wide range of nutrients, including bioactive compounds. These compounds have great biological activity and have been linked to the prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases. Currently, the food industry is developing new products to introduce these compounds, whereby smoothies are becoming more popular among consumers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the nutritional quality and the polyphenol and vitamin C content of smoothies available on the Spanish market. An evaluation of the nutritional information and ingredients was carried out. The phenolic compounds were determined by HPLC-ESI-TOF-MS; the vitamin C content was quantified using HPLC-UV/VIS; and the antioxidant activity was analyzed by DPPH and FRAP. Among all of the ingredients of the smoothies, coconut and banana have shown a negative impact on the polyphenol content of the smoothies. In contrast, ingredients such as orange, mango, and passion fruit had a positive correlation with the vitamin C content. Moreover, apple and red fruits showed the highest positive correlations with most of the phenolic acids, flavonoids, total phenolic compounds, and antioxidant activities. In addition, a clustering analysis was performed, and four groups were clearly defined according to the bioactive composition determined here. This research is a precious step for the formulation of new smoothies and to increase their polyphenol quality.

Abstract
Over the past thirty years, research has shown the huge potential of chitosan in biomedical applications such as drug delivery, tissue engineering and regeneration, cancer therapy, and antimicrobial treatments, among others. One of the major advantages of this interesting polysaccharide is its modifiability, which facilitates its use in tailor-made applications. In this way, the molecular structure of chitosan has been conjugated with multiple molecules to modify its mechanical, biological, or chemical properties. Here, we review the conjugation of chitosan with some bioactive molecules: hydroxycinnamic acids (HCAs); since these derivatives have been probed to enhance some of the biological effects of chitosan and to fine-tune its characteristics for its application in the biomedical field. First, the main characteristics of chitosan and HCAs are presented; then, the currently employed conjugation strategies between chitosan and HCAs are described; and, finally, the studied biomedical applications of these derivatives are discussed to present their limitations and advantages, which could lead to proximal therapeutic uses.

Abstract
Açaí, lychee, mamey, passion fruit and jackfruit are some lesser-consumed tropical fruits due to their low commercial production. In 2018, approximately 6.8 million tons of these fruits were harvested, representing about 6.35% of the total world production of tropical fruits. The present work reviews the nutritional content, profile of bioactive compounds, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacity of these fruits and their by-products, and their ability to modulate oxidative stress due to the content of phenolic compounds, carotenoids and dietary fiber. Açaí pulp is an excellent source of anthocyanins (587 mg cyanidin-3-glucoside equivalents/100 g dry weight, dw), mamey pulp is rich in carotenoids (36.12 mg β-carotene/100 g fresh weight, fw), passion fruit peel is rich in dietary fiber (61.16 g/100 dw). At the same time, jackfruit contains unique compounds such as moracin C, artocarpesin, norartocarpetin and oxyresveratrol. These molecules play an important role in the regulation of inflammation via activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (including p38, ERK and JNK) and nuclear factor κB pathways. The properties of the bioactive compounds found in these fruits make them a good source for use as food ingredients for nutritional purposes or alternative therapies. Research is needed to confirm their health benefits that can increase their marketability, which can benefit the primary producers, processing industries (particularly smaller ones) and the final consumer, while an integral use of their by-products will allow their incorporation into the circular bioeconomy.

Screening of Phenolic Compounds in Rejected Avocado and Determination of Their Antioxidant Potential. Processes (Basel) 2022. Abstract
Avocados are one of the important fruits in our diet, showing many health benefits. However, a significant amount of avocados become defective as they are transported throughout the supply chain and are refused by consumers, ending up at animal or pet feed manufacturers. Indeed, some previous evidence suggests that rejected avocados still present high phenolic content that can be reused in the drug or pharmacological industry. Therefore, in the present work, we measured the phenolic content from rejected avocado pulp and evaluated the antioxidant potential, followed by characterization and quantification using LC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS and HPLC-PDA. Reed avocado pulp was highest in TPC (0.21 mg GAE/g f.w.) and TFC (0.05 mg QE/g f.w.), whereas in TCT assay, low traces of tannins were exhibited in Wurtz and Reed avocado pulp. Hass avocado pulp had the highest antioxidant potential in DPPH (0.32 AAE/g f.w.), FRAP (0.13 AAE/g f.w.), ABTS (0.32 AAE/g f.w.), •OH-RSA (0.51 AAE/g f.w.) and FICA (0.47 mg EDTA/g) assays. Wurtz avocado pulp had higher antioxidant potential in RPA (0.07 mg AAE/g) and PMA (0.27 AAE/g f.w.). A total of 64 phenolic compounds were characterized in avocado pulp, including 10 in Hass avocado pulp, 31 in Wurtz avocado pulp and 45 in Reed avocado pulp. In HPLC-PDA quantification, chlorogenic acid (21.36 mg/g f.w.), epicatechin (14.24 mg/g f.w.) and quercetin (21.47 mg/g f.w.) were detected to be the highest in Hass, Wurtz and Reed avocado pulp, respectively. Our study showed the presence of phenolic compounds in rejected avocado pulp and hence can be utilized in food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
Active ingredients may be ingested through foods, and they can cause several interactions in the human body. Although drug–drug or drug–food interactions are evaluated before the approval of medicines, several functional food interactions are not well-documented because of the wide range of possible combinations of interactions. In this study, we examined the chemical reactions between hydroxycinnamic acids (HCAs), a group of polyphenols, and metal ions in artificial gastric juice or artificial intestinal fluid. Caffeic acid (CaA) and sinapic acid (SA) reacted with copper ions under artificial intestinal fluid conditions and produced new compounds. The triple interactions of CaA or SA with iron and copper ions were also examined. Relative to the initial compounds, CaA and SA derivatives produced by condensation exhibited an increased antioxidant and a decreased prooxidant activity. This study revealed a new food ingredient interaction pattern in which new compounds are produced under biological conditions.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.), one of the most consumed fruits in the world, is rich in phenolic and especially anthocyanin content. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the phenolic properties of 11 different sweet cherry genotypes collected from Giresun, Turkey. METHODS Total phenol, flavonoid, anthocyanin and antioxidant properties were observed spectrophotometrically in three different extraction (conventional, microwave-assisted and ultrasound-assisted) processes. Major phenolic, anthocyanin and antioxidant structures were visually assessed by high-performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC). Various phenolics in its structure were determined by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). RESULTS T2 and E5 genotypes had the highest content in terms of total phenol, flavonoid, anthocyanin and antioxidant activity. In HPTLC, cherry samples contained high levels of chlorogenic acid, neochlorogenic acid, p-coumaroylquinic acid, rutin and cyanidin-3 rutinoside. Among the phenolics examined in the LC-MS/MS method, the major compounds in the structure of cherry were found to be chlorogenic acid, rutin and catechin. The T2 genotype had higher phenolics than the other cherry samples (chlorogenic acid 19.3 mg/100 g; catechin; 3.8 mg/100 g; rutin 33.1 mg/100 g). CONCLUSION As a result, T2 and E5 genotypes had higher phenolic and antioxidant activity compared to other genotypes and commercial cultivars. It can be said that the antioxidant contents of these genotypes are due to the high anthocyanin amount in their structures. In addition, T2 genotype contained more major phenolics than other cherries. In the next stage, it is recommended to carry out studies on the cultivation of these two varieties.

Abstract
Caffeic acid (CA) has been present in many herbs, vegetables, and fruits. CA is a bioactive compound and exhibits various health advantages that are linked with its anti-oxidant functions and implicated in the therapy and prevention of disease progression of inflammatory diseases and cancer. The anti-tumor action of CA is attributed to its pro-oxidant and anti-oxidant properties. CA’s mechanism of action involves preventing reactive oxygen species formation, diminishing the angiogenesis of cancer cells, enhancing the tumor cells’ DNA oxidation, and repressing MMP-2 and MMP-9. CA and its derivatives have been reported to exhibit anti-carcinogenic properties against many cancer types. CA has indicated low intestinal absorption, low oral bioavailability in rats, and pitiable permeability across Caco-2 cells. In the present review, we have illustrated CA’s therapeutic potential, pharmacokinetics, and characteristics. The pharmacological effects of CA, the emphasis on in vitro and in vivo studies, and the existing challenges and prospects of CA for cancer treatment and prevention are discussed in this review.

Caffeic acid (CA) is widely found in nature, and has a broad spectrum of biological activities. However, the low hydrophilicity and lipophilicity of CA limited its application. Dodecyl caffeate (DC) is the lipophilic ester of caffeic acid (CA), and also has high antioxidant activity. In this work, CA, used as a substrate, and three ionic liquids with different acidities and H2SO4 were used as economic catalysts for DC preparation. The effects of variables on DC yield were investigated and optimized by response surface methodology (RSM). And the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of the esterification of CA and dodecanol were evaluated. Results showed that lipophilic DC was successfully synthesized using ionic liquid ([Hnmp]HSO4) as a catalyst. And the optimal conditions by RSM were substrate ratio of 10.2 : 1, IL dosage of 9.8% at 87 °C for 118 min. Under the optional conditions, the maximum DC yield was 94.67 ± 1.32%. The k 0, E a, ΔH, ΔS, and ΔG were 7.18 × 107 mol (L min)-1, 65.77 kJ mol-1, 63.10 kJ (mol K)-1, -103.80 J (mol K)-1, and 99.78 kJ mol-1 at 363 K, respectively. DC prepared in this work showed a good DPPH radical scavenging activity, which indicated that DC can be used as a potential antioxidant in food and cosmetics.

Abstract
Caffeic acid (CA) has been present in many herbs, vegetables, and fruits. CA is a bioactive compound and exhibits various health advantages that are linked with its anti-oxidant functions and implicated in the therapy and prevention of disease progression of inflammatory diseases and cancer. The anti-tumor action of CA is attributed to its pro-oxidant and anti-oxidant properties. CA’s mechanism of action involves preventing reactive oxygen species formation, diminishing the angiogenesis of cancer cells, enhancing the tumor cells’ DNA oxidation, and repressing MMP-2 and MMP-9. CA and its derivatives have been reported to exhibit anti-carcinogenic properties against many cancer types. CA has indicated low intestinal absorption, low oral bioavailability in rats, and pitiable permeability across Caco-2 cells. In the present review, we have illustrated CA’s therapeutic potential, pharmacokinetics, and characteristics. The pharmacological effects of CA, the emphasis onin vitro and in vivostudies, and the existing challenges and prospects of CA for cancer treatment and prevention are discussed in this review.

Abstract
The recretohalophyte Karelinia caspia is of forage and medical value and can remediate saline soils. We here assess the contribution of primary/secondary metabolism to osmotic adjustment and ROS homeostasis in Karelinia caspia under salt stress using multi-omic approaches. Computerized phenomic assessments, tests for cellular osmotic changes and lipid peroxidation indicated that salt treatment had no detectable physical effect on K. caspia. Metabolomic analysis indicated that amino acids, saccharides, organic acids, polyamine, phenolic acids, and vitamins accumulated significantly with salt treatment. Transcriptomic assessment identified differentially expressed genes closely linked to the changes in above primary/secondary metabolites under salt stress. In particular, shifts in carbohydrate metabolism (TCA cycle, starch and sucrose metabolism, glycolysis) as well as arginine and proline metabolism were observed to maintain a low osmotic potential. Chlorogenic acid/vitamin E biosynthesis was also enhanced, which would aid in ROS scavenging in the response of K. caspia to salt. Overall, our findings define key changes in primary/secondary metabolism that are coordinated to modulate the osmotic balance and ROS homeostasis to contribute to the salt tolerance of K. caspia.

Abstract
1H NMR and LC-MS, commonly used metabolomics analytical platforms, were used to annotate the metabolites found in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) irrigated with four different treatments based on FA to AMD ratios, namely: control (0% AMD; tap water), 1:1 (50% AMD), 3:1 (75% AMD is 75% FA: AMD), and 100% AMD (untreated). The effects of stress on plants were illustrated by the primary metabolite shifts in the region from δH 0.0 to δH 4.0 and secondary metabolites peaks were prominent in the region ranging from δH 4.5 to δH 8.0. The 1:3 irrigation treatment enabled, in two potato cultivars, the production of significantly high concentrations of secondary metabolites due to the 75% FA: AMD content in the irrigation mixture, which induced stress. The findings suggested that 1:1 irrigation treatment induced production of lower amounts of secondary metabolites in all crops compared to crops irrigated with untreated acid mine drainage treatment and with other FA-treated AMD solutions.

Abstract
Bell peppers are widely considered as healthy foods that can provide people with various phytochemicals, especially phenolic compounds, which contribute to the antioxidant property of bell peppers. Nevertheless, the acknowledgment of phenolic compounds in bell peppers is still limited. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the phenolic content and the antioxidant potential in pulps and seeds of different bell peppers (green, yellow, and red) by several in vitro assays followed by the characterization and quantification of individual phenolics using liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization-quadrupole-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS) and high-performance liquid chromatography photodiode array (HPLC-PDA) quantification, respectively. The captured results showed that the pulp of red bell peppers exhibited the highest phenolic content in the total polyphenol content (1.03 ± 0.07 mg GAE/gf.w.), total flavonoid content (137.43 ± 6.35 μg QE/gf.w.), and total tannin content (0.22 ± 0.01 mg CE/gf.w.) as well as the most antioxidant potential in all antioxidant capacity estimation assays including total antioxidant capacity (3.56 ± 0.01 mg AAE/gf.w.), 2,2'-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (0.89 ± 0.01 mg AAE/gf.w.), 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (1.36 ± 0.12 mg AAE/gf.w.), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (0.15 ± 0.01 mg AAE/gf.w.). LC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS isolated and identified a total of 59 phenolic compounds, including flavonoids (21), phenolic acids (20), other phenolic compounds (12), lignans (5), and stilbenes (1) in all samples. According to HPLC-PDA quantification, the seed portions showed a significantly higher amount of phenolic compounds. These findings indicated that the waste of bell peppers can be a potential source of phenolic compounds, which can be utilized as antioxidant ingredients in foods and nutritional products.

Abstract
Morinda citrifolia is a plant that grows in Brazilian northeast and presented a wide range of therapeutic, industrial and technological applications. Based on this, the aim of this work was to study the chemical composition, main biological activities and potential toxicity of its extracts, aiming their industrial application. Important compounds were identified in the methanolic extracts obtained by ultrasonic and Soxhlet extractions from leaves and fruits. GC × GC allowed for the identification of phytosterols, fatty acids and methyl esters, besides others (scopoletin, hydrocarbons, alcohols, terpenes). By HPLC-DAD, compounds like catechin, rutin, quercetin could be also identified and quantified. Their content of polyphenols and flavonoids was considered between the international standards. The extracts showed high antioxidant activities (EC50 ∼ 300 μg mL-1, using DPPH assay) compared with those from the literature. The extracts did not show toxicity or mutagenicity, but presented cytotoxicity, which can indicate their use safely in phytotherapic or nutritional applications.

Abstract
Mammea americana L. is a plant with diverse medicinal uses in the municipality of Cértegui, Chocó, Colombia. This research characterized the ethnomedicinal, chemical, and antibacterial activities of the bark of Mammea americana. Through interviews and semistructured surveys with the community, its ethnomedicinal uses were determined. Compounds present in the bark extract were identified and quantified by gas chromatography-coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and a qualitative analysis was performed by preliminary phytochemistry. Antibacterial activity and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) were carried out by agar diffusion and dilution methods, respectively, using ethanolic and aqueous extracts. Ethnomedical data showed that the bark is used to treat 14 conditions, the most representative being gallstones, prostate inflammation, and malaria. Preliminary phytochemical analyses showed the existence of several secondary metabolites such as tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, triterpenes and/or steroids, quinones, and saponins. A total of 29 compounds were identified; the most abundant were ethyl 5-oxo-4-(p-toluidine)-2,5-dihydro-3-furancarboxylate, phenol, 4,4′,4″-ethylidynetris, nerolidol, 19-hydroxy-13-epimanoyl oxide, α-elemene, and δ-cadinene. The results showed remarkable antibacterial activity of the ethanolic extract (20 mg/ml) against Staphylococcus aureus (22.6 mm) and Escherichia coli (19.6 mm) and of the crude water extract (20 mg/ml) against Staphylococcus aureus (18.5 mm) and Escherichia coli (12.4 mm). The strongest MIC was for the ethanolic extract with values of 0.357 and 0.897 mg/ml against S. aureus and E. coli strains, respectively, while in the aqueous extract, S. aureus (3.99 mg/ml) and E. coli (4.3 mg/ml) were recorded. It is assumed that the compounds identified in this study could be responsible for the antibacterial activity of the species, as well as the relationship of the identified compounds and metabolites with the ethnomedical uses given by the community, providing a scientific and traditional basis for its different traditional medical uses.

Abstract
Aflatoxicosis can induce largescale toxicities in predisposed populations. Food fortification with adequate antioxidant sources may reduce the toxic burden from aflatoxicosis. We examined the individual and combined effect of Caffeic acid (CA) on the aflatoxin B1 (AFB1)-induced hepatic and renal injury in male rats. Five experimental rat cohort (n = 6) consisting of the control (2 mL/kg corn oil), AFB1 alone (50 μg/kg), CA alone (40 mg/kg), AFB1+CA1 (50 μg/kg + 20 mg/kg) and AFB1+CA2 (50 μg/kg + 40 mg/kg) were so treated for 28 consecutive days. Upon sacrifices, diagnostic markers of hepatorenal functions, oxidative stress, inflammation, oxidative deoxyribonucleic acid -DNA-damage and apoptosis were analysed. Our results showed that CA reduced AFB1-induced toxicities in rats' liver and kidneys by significantly increasing (p < 0.05) endogenous antioxidant and the anti-inflammatory IL-10 level. Caffeic acid simultaneously reduced hepatic and renal dysfunction biomarkers in the serum, oxidative stress, and lipid peroxidation levels. Besides, CA diminished reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, inflammatory nitric oxide levels, interleukin-1 β and the activities of xanthine oxidase and myeloperoxidase. Additionally, CA reduced DNA damage and caspase-mediated apoptotic responses and preserved the cytoarchitecture of rats' liver and kidneys treated with AFB1. These data suggest that CA can be used as a food additive to mitigate AFB1-induced toxicity in the examined organs.

Abstract
Physalis peruviana L. is among plant species possessing evident nutritional, nutraceutical, and commercial interests. This review highlights the complexity of the chemical composition supporting the multiple pharmacotherapeutic indications and dietary values of this plant through evidence-based studies from Google Scholar, PubMed/Medline, SciFinder, Science Direct, Scopus, the Wiley online library, and Web of Science. The literature mentions at least 40 compounds isolated from different parts; others are still under investigation. High yields in carotenoids, amino acids, minerals, vitamin C, vitamin E, and essential fatty acids have healthy nutritional benefits. Various phytoconstituents, particularly withanolides, exhibit anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic potentials, as well as cardiovascular and liver protective effects. Prospective studies reveal that the leaves would also provide various beneficial bioactive chemicals worth being isolated. However, clinical evidence-based studies are seldom. Therefore, adequate pharmaceutical formulations and more in-depth controlled clinical trials are needed to fill the gap.

Abstract
High L-carnitine ingestion has been shown to cause liver injury, mechanically due to an elevated circulating level of trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), a gut microbiota-derived metabolite from L-carnitine. This study aimed to investigate whether chlorogenic acid (CGA), a health-promoting polyphenol, could inhibit TMAO formation and thereafter might prevent L-carnitine-induced liver injury in mice. Feeding of mice with 3% L-carnitine in drinking water increased the serum and urinary levels of TMAO (p < 0.01 vs. Normal), whereas the serum and urinary TMAO formation was sharply reduced by CGA administration (p < 0.01). At the phylum level, CGA inhibited the L-carnitine-induced increase in the abundance of Firmicutes and Proteobacteria, while it promoted Bacteroidetes. At the genus level, CGA notably increased the abundance of Akkermansia and Bacteroides, but reduced the population of Erysipelatoclostridium, Faecalibaculum and Erysipelotrichaceae in high L-carnitine feeding mice. Meanwhile, CGA caused strong inhibition against the increase of liver injury markers (i.e. AST, ALT and ALP), hepatic inflammatory cytokines (i.e. IL-1, IL-6, TNF-α and TNF-β) and dyslipidemia (i.e. TC, TG, LDL-C and HDL-C) in L-carnitine-fed mice (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that CGA holds great potential to alleviate liver dysfunction induced by high L-carnitine ingestion. The beneficial effect might be attributed to the protection against TMAO formation and the improvement of the health-promoting gut microbiota, as well as the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of CGA.

Abstract
Caffeoylquinic acids (CQAs) are specialized plant metabolites we encounter in our daily life. Humans consume CQAs in mg-to-gram quantities through dietary consumption of plant products. CQAs are considered beneficial for human health, mainly due to their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Recently, new biosynthetic pathways via a peroxidase-type p-coumaric acid 3-hydroxylase enzyme were discovered. More recently, a new GDSL lipase-like enzyme able to transform monoCQAs into diCQA was identified in Ipomoea batatas. CQAs were recently linked to memory improvement; they seem to be strong indirect antioxidants via Nrf2 activation. However, there is a prevalent confusion in the designation and nomenclature of different CQA isomers. Such inconsistencies are critical and complicate bioactivity assessment since different isomers differ in bioactivity and potency. A detailed explanation regarding the origin of such confusion is provided, and a recommendation to unify nomenclature is suggested. Furthermore, for studies on CQA bioactivity, plant-based laboratory animal diets contain CQAs, which makes it difficult to include proper control groups for comparison. Therefore, a synthetic diet free of CQAs is advised to avoid interferences since some CQAs may produce bioactivity even at nanomolar levels. Biotransformation of CQAs by gut microbiota, the discovery of new enzymatic biosynthetic and metabolic pathways, dietary assessment, and assessment of biological properties with potential for drug development are areas of active, ongoing research. This review is focused on the chemistry, biosynthesis, occurrence, analytical challenges, and bioactivity recently reported for mono-, di-, tri-, and tetraCQAs.

Abstract
This review reports the nutritional, phytochemical compounds and biological properties of 4 fruits commonly consumed by people living in Amazon region, namely Biribá (Rollinia mucosa Jacq.), Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum L.), Pupunha (Bactris gasipaes Kunth) and Tucumã (Astrocaryum aculeatum Meyer). These fruits have been high held nutritional, functional and economic potential and contribute to the daily intake of nutrients, energy and bioactive compounds by people living in Amazon rainforest region. Phytochemical compounds with biological properties were detected in these fruits, for instance (but not limited to), annonaceous acetogenins in Biribá, geraniin and corilagin in Rambutan, rutin and catechin in Pupunha, and β-carotene and flavonoids in Tucumã. The biological properties of Biribá, Rambutan, Pupunha and Tucumã have been evaluated by in vitro and in vivo assays, especially antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Therefore, these Amazonian fruits can be exploited by the food industry as a food and therapeutic plant-material to develop valuable products, such as medicine products and can be used as sources for obtaining compounds for the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract
We evaluated the impact of yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis sp.) bagasse extract (PFBE) administration in systemic oxidative and inflammatory parameters in vivo, considering prostate cancer progression in transgenic mice (TRAMP). Piceatannol, scirpusin-B, dicaffeoylquinic acid, citric acid, and (+)-catechin were identified in PFBE, and the extract showed high in vitro antioxidant capacity. Some alterations in systemic parameters were verified during prostate cancer progression, as the increase in ALT and MDA levels, and SOD and GPx activities in the plasma. In the liver, higher MDA, TNF-α, and NF-κB levels, and GR and GPx activities were verified. Compared to their respective controls, the short- and long-term PFBE administration reduced MDA levels in the liver and plasma. The long-term treatment increased the catalase activity in the plasma, while the short-term treatment increased the hepatic SOD and catalase activities. Still, a reduction in hepatic TNF-α and NF-κB levels was verified after long-term treatment. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Prostate cancer progression is associated with changes in systemic redox status and inflammation markers. Moreover, the intake of polyphenols with antioxidant properties, besides delaying prostate carcinogenesis, may improve the systemic antioxidant defenses and inflammatory response. In vitro studies pointed to a promising antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential of yellow passion fruit bagasse. However, in vivo studies are scarce. Our results provided information about in vivo impacts of PFBE oral consumption on antioxidant defense and inflammation, indicating its potential as an adjuvant during the initial steps of prostate cancer.

Abstract
Previous studies have characterized a saline extract from Microgramma vacciniifolia rhizome and its lectin (MvRL)-rich fraction with low acute toxicity. In the present study, we evaluated these preparations for acute toxicity (1,000 mg/kg) and antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities (100-400 mg/kg for the extract and 25-50 mg/kg for the fraction). No signs of toxicity were observed. Both the extract and fraction increased the latency period for nociception in the hot plate assay, decreased writhing induced by acetic acid, and promoted analgesic effects in phases 1 and 2 of the formalin test. The antinociceptive mechanism was attributed to interactions with opioid receptors and K+ ATPase channels. The extract and fraction decreased carrageenan-induced paw edema in 46.15 % and 77.22 %, respectively, at the highest doses evaluated. Furthermore, the fraction was shown to act on the bradykinin pathway. The ability to decrease leukocyte migration after treatment was also verified in the peritonitis and air pouch models. In exudates collected from air pouches, decreased tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and increased interleukin (IL)-10 levels were noted. Both the extract and fraction also effectively inhibited the development of granulomatous tissue. In conclusion, the substances investigated in this study can be used for the development of novel therapeutic options for pain and inflammatory processes.

Abstract
Ilex paraguariensis is a perennial plant used in the production of mate tea, "chimarrão" and "tererê," cosmetics, and other food products. Its leaves are harvested every 12 or 18 months. Approximately 2 to 5 tons of residue are generated per hectare during the harvest. The bioactive composition of this residue has not been characterized to date. Therefore, this paper presents for the first time, the simultaneous characterization of the bioactive compounds of the leaves, thin branches, and thick branches (residue) from I. paraguariensis grown under two cultivation systems: "full sun" and "shaded." The identification and quantification of the compounds was performed using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionisation and quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer (HPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS). Consequently, 35 compounds were identified. The average dry weight of phenolic compounds in the residue was 4.1 g/100 g, whereas that in the bark of the residue was 12.9 g/100 g, which was similar to the content found in leaves. The same compounds were identified in the two cultivation systems but with a difference in their contents. While the "full sun" cultivation had a higher content of phenolic acids, the "shaded" cultivation had a higher content of flavonoids and saponins. It was found that the I. paraguariensis residue, particularly the bark, is rich in bioactive compounds, such as quinic, 3-caffeoylquinic, 5-cafefoylquinic, 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic, and 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acids as well as rutin, and their contents vary according to the cultivation system. Therefore, this residue is an underutilized natural resource with a potential for industrial applications. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Yerba mate producers will be able to choose the best cultivation system ("full sun" or "shaded") to increase the content of bioactive compounds. New products may be developed with yerba mate residue due to its high concentration of compounds that are beneficial to the human health. New destinations may be applied to yerba mate residue from the harvest pruning, adding commercial value to this unexplored natural resource.

Abstract
Nutraceuticals are a category of products more often associated with food but having pharmaceuticals property and characteristics. However, there is still no internationally accepted concept of these food-pharmaceutical properties, and their interpretation can differ from country to country. Nutraceuticals are used as part of dietary supplements in most countries. They can be phytochemicals which are biologically active and have health benefits. These can be supplied as a supplement and/or as a functional food to the customer. For human health and longevity, these materials are likely to play a vital role. Consumption of these items is typical without a therapeutic prescription and/or supervision by the vast majority of the public. The development of nutraceuticals can be achieved through many bioresources and organisms. This review article will discuss the current research on nutraceuticals from different biological sources and their potential use as an agent for improving human health and well-being, as well as the gaps and future perspective of research related to nutraceutical development.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Plinia cauliflora (Mart.) Kausel, known in Brazil as jabuticaba or jaboticaba has been used by Brazilian native populations for medicinal purposes, including those related to inflammatory conditions, such as asthma, diarrhea, disorders in female genitourinary tract, and tonsillitis. Inflammation has emerged as a main factor for the oxidative stress, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia present in chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Such disturbances have been a leading cause of death worldwide for decades, despite significant efforts in developing new therapies. Therefore, strengthening the relevance of ethnobotanic approaches, as P. cauliflora has the potential to become a natural, native, and traditional product to prevent and treat inflammation-associated diseases more effectively for more people. AIM OF THE STUDY Evaluate anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, and analgesic properties of hydroethanolic extract of P. cauliflora epicarps (PcE). MATERIALS AND METHODS Phytochemical compound from the PcE were identified through HPLC-DAD-ESI-MSn analysis. Antioxidant activity was determined by measuring 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging. The anti-inflammatory potential was investigated by carrageenan-induced paw edema and peritonitis in mice. Analgesic effect was assessed, in mice, though hot plate test and acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing. Antidiabetic and hypolipidemic potential were evaluated using alloxan-induced diabetic mice. RESULTS Tannins, phenolic acids, and their derivatives were the predominant phytochemicals found. Overall, PcE showed different properties related to the treatment of clinical conditions associated with chronic diseases as a potent antioxidant activity, demonstrating a radical scavenging action similar to gallic acid. PcE oral administration also significantly reduced inflammation induced by paw edema and partially blocked leukocyte migration. Moreover, PcE produced peripheral and central analgesic effects, as evaluated in the writhing model and hot plate tests. Treatment with PcE significantly improved glucose levels and lipid markers in diabetic mice. CONCLUSIONS P. cauliflora fruits are rich sources of secondary metabolites, mainly tannins and phenolic acids with high biological potential, which can effectively contribute to the approach of preventing and controlling chronic NCDs.

Abstract
Snake fruit (Salacca zalacca (Gaert.) Voss) is a fruit species traditionally cultivated in Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries. The edible parts of the fruits contain a certain amount of total phenolic, flavonoid, and monoterpenoid compounds, proving them to be their perfect sources. The main goal of this work was to detect, quantify, and identify various phenolic compounds present in snake fruit pulp. Ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography coupled to a Q-Orbitrap tandem mass spectrometer was able to detect 19 phenolic compounds in the salak pulp, including 5 flavanols, 6 phenolic acids, 2 flavonols, 1 flavone, and also 5 presumably new phenolic compounds. Among the detected compounds, 11 were reported and quantified for the first time in salak pulp. Chlorogenic acid was by far the most predominant phenolic compound. The next relatively abundant compounds in snake fruit were epicatechin, isoquercetin, neochlorogenic acid, ferulic acid, gallic acid and procyanidine B2 (levels at ca 5–10 μg/g in MeOH extract), syringic acid, and caffeic acid (levels at ca 1 μg/g in H2O extract). A significant total phenolic content (257.17 μL/mL) and antioxidant activities (10.56 μM TE/g of fruit pulp) were determined. In conclusion, S. zalacca fruit has potential to serve as a natural source of phenolic compounds with antioxidative activities which may be associated with their health benefits.

Abstract
Caffeic acid is one of the most important hydroxycinnamic acids found in various foods and plant products. It has multiple beneficial effects in the human body such as antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antineoplastic. Since overdoses of caffeic acid may have negative effects, the quality and quantity of this acid in foods, pharmaceuticals, food supplements, etc., needs to be accurately determined. The present paper analyzes the most representative scientific papers published mostly in the last 10 years which describe the development and characterization of voltamperometric sensors or biosensors based on carbon nanomaterials and/or enzyme commonly used for detecting caffeic acid and a series of methods which may improve the performance characteristics of such sensors.

Abstract
The encapsulation efficiency of spray-dried cocona pulp encapsulated with a blend of maltodextrin (MD) and hydrolyzed collagen (HC) (CP-ENC) and the stability, color parameters, antioxidant capacity (FRAP and ABTS), and 5-caffeoylquinic acid content were evaluated through 120 days of storage, at every 15 days, at 25 and 35 °C. The results of CP-ENC were compared to those of pure freeze-dried cocona pulp (CP-nENC). The sorption isotherms and glass transition temperatures (Tg) were determined in order to evaluate the stability of the cocona powder. The GAB model fitted well the experimental data for moisture sorption of samples. The high Tg for CP-ENC (132.02 °C) was attributed to the high molecular weight of encapsulating agents. The encapsulation efficiency and color parameters for CP-ENC kept constant values for 120 days. A loss of 30% in the antioxidant capacity occurred on day 75 for CP-ENC. The values of retention of 5-CQA for CP-ENC (83% and 68% when stored at 25 and 35 °C, respectively) were greater than those observed for CP-nENC. At 25 °C, stored CP-ENC had a higher retention and a longer half-life of 5-CQA (14.4 months) than CP-nENC. The results suggest that it is suitable to microencapsulate cocona pulp with MD and HC to improve protection of antioxidant compounds, throughout storage at 25 °C.
