Abstract
This study investigated the impact of high-pressure processing (HPP) treatment on the structure and physicochemical properties of pectin (PEC)/carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) composite films, along with the development of new active films incorporating emodin as an antibacterial agent. The results showed that 500 MPa/20 min HPP treatment significantly improved the tensile strength (from 45.91 ± 4.63 MPa to 52.24 ± 4.87 MPa) and elongation at the break (from 5.00 ± 1.44 % to 11.72 ± 2.97 %) of the films. It also improved the film's thermal stability and had no significant effect on its thermal degradability. Moreover, emodin was incorporated into the PEC/CMC film-forming solution and subjected to 500 MPa/20 min HPP treatment to investigate the structure, functional properties, optical properties, and antibacterial activity of the film. The emodin caused the film structural alteration, but significantly improved the water vapor barrier properties. It also reduced the film brightness and light transmission. The antibacterial assessment demonstrated that the film's antibacterial activity was correlated positively with increasing emodin content, and the number of viable cells of Staphylococcus aureus decreased by 1.29 log10 CFU/mL, 1.70 log10 CFU/mL, and 1.80 log10 CFU/mL with different levels of EM antimicrobial films after 12 h.

Abstract
The present review is novel as it discusses the main findings of researchers on the topic and their implications, as well as highlights the emerging research in this particular area and its future prospective. The seeds of Flax (Linum usitatissimum) extrude mucilage (FSM) that has a diverse and wide range of applications, especially in the food industry and as a pharmaceutical ingredient. FSM has been blended with several food and dairy products to improve gelling ability, optical properties, taste, and user compliance. The FSM is recognized as a foaming, encapsulating, emulsifying, suspending, film-forming, and gelling agent for several pharmaceutical preparations and healthcare materials. Owing to stimuli (pH) -responsive swelling-deswelling characteristics, high swelling indices at different physiological pHs of the human body, and biocompatibility, FSM is considered a smart material for intelligent, targeted, and controlled drug delivery applications through conventional and advanced drug delivery systems. FSM has been modified through carboxymethylation, acetylation, copolymerization, and electrostatic complexation to get the desired properties for pharma, food, and healthcare products. The present review is therefore devoted to the isolation techniques, structural characterization, highly valuable properties for food and pharmaceutical industries, preclinical and clinical trials, pharmacological aspects, biomedical attributes, and patents of FSM.

Abstract
To reduce environmental pollution and improve human health, developing green active food packaging materials is very necessary. In this study, a novel antioxidant and antibacterial composite film was produced by incorporating inclusion complex (CDIC) of cannabidiol (CBD) with 2,6-di-O-methyl-β-cyclodextrin (DM-β-CD) into pectin. The pectin films loaded with CBD and hemp leaf water extract (HLE) were prepared for comparison. Comprehensive characterizations showed CBD was encapsulated by DM-β-CD and CDIC was evenly dispersed into pectin matrix, forming the compact and intact film. The composite films showed good mechanical properties and biodegradability. CDIC film showed the highest transparency and smoothness (Rrms/Rmax: 2.6/16.8 nm). The addition of bioactives reduced the water-binding capacity and CDIC film had the strongest hydrophobicity. Besides, DM-β-CD encapsulation improved the thermal stability of CBD in CDIC film. Benefiting from encapsulation and excellent bioactivities of CBD, CDIC film showed excellent antioxidant capacity and antibacterial activity, effectively inhibiting colony growth and maintaining the strawberry color in strawberry preservation. This work could provide a novel eco-friendly candidate for food packaging material and expand the use of CBD in food industry.

Abstract
The demand for UV-protective and biodegradable packaging materials has been increasing with greater awareness about environmental sustainability and human safety. In this work, the effect of incorporating riceberry phenolic extract (RPE) as well as combined RPE and green synthesized biogenic nano‑silver (RPE-NS, into Tara gum/PVA (TP)-based matrix was evaluated on the physical, mechanical, functional, biocompatible and biodegradable attributes of the resultant composite films. Integration of RPE (2 wt%) and RPE-NS (0.8 wt%) resulted in nanocomposite (TP/RPE-NS) film with improved physical properties relative to the plain TP and TP/RPE films. The TP/RPE-NS film displayed a compact structure and homogenous distribution of the nano‑silver. Increased molecular interactions, crystallinity and thickness was also observed for the nanocomposite film. Compared to plain TP film, TP/RPE-NS film exhibited improved water vapor barrier properties and surface hydrophobicity due to the extract and nanoparticles. The tensile strength and elongation-at-break of TP/RPE-NS were markedly higher (41.76 MPa and 37.40 %) compared to that of plain TP film (36.07 MPa and 20.80 %). Whereas TP/RPE film provided good UV protection (UPF value of 31.85) compared to the minimal protection by TP film (UPF value of 2.72), combination of RPE/RPE-NS ensured that TP/RPE-NS availed an excellent UV-barrier performance (UPF value of 61.09). Furthermore, TP/RPE-NS film exhibited significant antioxidant activity relative to TP film. Besides, all TP-based films were found to be compatible with rat erythrocytes and biodegradable. Taken together, these findings indicate that TP/RPE-NS holds good potential for the development of UV-protective and biodegradable packaging material.

Abstract
Raspberries are used for both food and medicine, but it has not yet attracted widespread attention. In this paper, the chemical constituen of the original plant raspberry. R. chingii is one of the new "Zhe Bawei" medicinal materials selected in 2017. "Zhe Bawei" refers to eight kinds of genuine medicinal materials in Zhejiang Province. The chemical constituents, pharmacological effects, processing, and application of Rubus chingii Hu were reviewed to provide a reference for its further development. Relevant literature in recent years was collected in databases such as China Knowledge Network, Web of Science, Elsevier, PubMed, and X-Mol, using "raspberry", "Rubus chingii", "traditional use", "chemical composition", "pharmacology", etc. as keywords individually or in combination. The summary of pharmacological activities shows that the relationship between the pharmacological activities of raspberry is still not deep enough. More in-depth research should be carried out in this direction to explore the mechanism of action of its active ingredients and provide effective reference for the further development of the raspberry industry. In the future, with the participation of more researchers, it is expected to develop innovative drugs based on raspberry for the treatment of diseases.

Abstract
The development of sustainable materials from the valorization of waste is a good alternative to reducing the negative environmental impact of plastic packaging. The objectives of this study were to develop and characterize pectin-based composite films incorporated with cork or cork with either coffee grounds or walnut shells, as well as to test the films' genotoxicity, antioxidant properties, and biodegradation capacity in soil and seawater. The addition of cork, coffee grounds, or walnut shells modified the films' characteristics. The results showed that those films were thicker (0.487 ± 0.014 mm to 0.572 ± 0.014 mm), more opaque (around 100%), darker (L* = 25.30 ± 0.78 to 33.93 ± 0.84), and had a higher total phenolic content (3.17 ± 0.01 mg GA/g to 4.24 ± 0.02 mg GA/g). On the other hand, the films incorporated only with cork showed higher values of elongation at break (32.24 ± 1.88% to 36.30 ± 3.25%) but lower tensile strength (0.91 ± 0.19 MPa to 1.09 ± 0.08 MPa). All the films presented more heterogeneous and rougher microstructures than the pectin film. This study also revealed that the developed films do not contain DNA-reactive substances and that they are biodegradable in soil and seawater. These positive properties could subsequently make the developed films an interesting eco-friendly food packaging solution that contributes to the valorization of organic waste and by-products, thus promoting the circular economy and reducing the environmental impact of plastic materials.

Abstract
The present study aims to develop and characterize biodegradable packaging films from lemon peel-derived pectin and chitosan incorporated with a bioactive extract from neem leaves. The films (PCNE) contained varying concentrations of neem leaf extract and were comprehensively assessed for their physical, optical, mechanical, and antimicrobial attributes. The thickness, moisture content, water solubility, and water vapor permeability of the biodegradable packaging films increased with the increasing concentration of neem leaf extract. Comparatively, the tensile strength of the films decreased by 42.05 % compared to the control film. The Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) confirmed that the resultant blended pectin-chitosan films showed a uniform structure without cracks. Furthermore, the analysis targeting Staphylococcus aureus and Aspergillus niger indicated that the films had potent antimicrobial activity. Based on these results, the optimum films were selected and subsequently applied on apricot fruits to increase their shelf life at ambient temperature. The findings, after examining factors such as colour, firmness, total soluble solids, shrinkage, weight loss, and appearance, concluded that the apricots coated by PCNE-5 had the most delayed signs of spoilage and increased their shelf life by 50 %. The results showed the potential applicability of lemon peel pectin-chitosan-neem leaf extract blend films in biodegradable food packaging.

Abstract
The present study aimed to develop food packaging films by using a combination of pectin (PE) and sodium alginate (SA) enriched with Acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid (AKBA) as a functional or active ingredient. The fabricated films underwent comprehensive evaluation of their morphological, chemical, mechanical, barrier, optical, thermal, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. SEM and FTIR analysis showed that AKBA had good compatibility with film-forming components. The AKBA-loaded film samples exhibited a decrease in their barrier properties and tensile strength, but enhancements in both elongation at break and thickness values was observed. With the addition of AKBA, a significant increase (p < 0.05) in the ultraviolet barrier properties of the films and total colour variation (ΔE) was observed. TGA analysis of the films unveiled an improvement in thermal resistance with the incorporation of AKBA. Moreover, the films loaded with AKBA exhibited potent antioxidant activity in the ABTS and DPPH assay methods. Disk diffusion analysis showed the antimicrobial activity of AKBA-loaded films against P. aeruginosa, highlighting the potential of AKBA as a natural antimicrobial agent for the safety of food products. The results demonstrate the practical application of PE and SA active films loaded with AKBA, particularly within the food packaging industry.

Abstract
The Peruvian Andes are the natural habitat of several wild blackberry species that are little known and exploited due to the lack of technological and scientific development to support their agricultural potential. In this context, a study was conducted to understand the physicochemical composition, bioactive compounds, antimicrobial activity, and in vitro multiplication of four wild blackberry (Rubus sp.) species from the northern Peruvian highlands. The results indicate that fruits of R. floribundus presented the highest content of total soluble solids (9.58 ± 1.83°Brix) and titratable acidity (1.88 ± 0.07% citric acid). The fruits of R. weberbaueri recorded the highest total phenolic content (415.06 ± 8.69 mg GAE/100 g Ff). The antioxidant capacity determined by the DPPH assay varied significantly among species, with the highest value found in fruits of R. andicola (50.27 ± 0.11 mg TE/100 g Ff). The fruit extracts of R. weberbaueri and R. andicola showed better antimicrobial activity, with Staphylococcus aureus being the most sensitive bacterium. In the in vitro multiplication phase, the results show that BAP (6-Benzylaminopurine) has a significant effect at a dose of 1.5 mg l-1 on shoot number, leaf number, and shoot length. The results may help in the management of genetic resources.

Abstract
The present review paper focuses on recent developments in edible films and coatings made of base compounds from biological sources, namely plants, animals, algae, and microorganisms. These sources include by-products, residues, and wastes from agro-food industries and sea products that contribute to sustainability concerns. Chitosan, derived from animal biological sources, such as crustacean exoskeletons, has been the most studied base compound over the past three years. Polysaccharides typically constitute no more than 3-5% of the film/coating base solution, with some exceptions, like Arabic gum. Proteins and lipids may be present in higher concentrations, such as zein and beeswax. This review also discusses the enrichment of these bio-based films and coatings with various functional and/or bioactive compounds to confer or enhance their functionalities, such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-enzymatic properties, as well as physical properties. Whenever possible, a comparative analysis among different formulations was performed. The results of the applications of these edible films and coatings to fruit and vegetable products are also described, including shelf life extension, inhibition of microbial growth, and prevention of oxidation. This review also explores novel types of packaging, such as active and intelligent packaging. The potential health benefits of edible films and coatings, as well as the biodegradability of films, are also discussed. Finally, this review addresses recent innovations in the edible films and coatings industry, including the use of nanotechnologies, aerogels, and probiotics, and provides future perspectives and the challenges that the sector is facing.

Abstract
In preference to synthetic or petroleum-based materials, current research in food and pharmaceutical industries has focused on the development of biodegradable and sustainable materials due to their low toxicity, and biocompatibility. In particular, the natural water-soluble polysaccharide tara gum (Caesalpinia spinosa) has been widely used as a food-grade and drug-delivery agent due to its biodegradability, and biocompatibility. Moreover, owing to its easily modifiable hydroxy groups, tara gum, and its derivatives have been employed as food packaging films and pharmaceutical materials. In the present critical review, facile grafting methods of tara gum are reviewed, and an up-to-date comprehensive application of tara gum polysaccharides revealed their uses in pH-sensitive food packaging. In addition, modified tara gum materials exhibited improved drug delivery applications with biocompatible properties. The non-toxic nature and non-Newtonian, pseudoplastic rheological properties as well as the synergistic behavior of tara gum with other polysaccharides explore its further industrial applications in several fields. Additionally, several approaches for improving tara gum for use as a stabilizer and thickener for food items, and monitoring food spoilage, have provided notable customized characteristics. In brief, its many advantages make tara gum polysaccharide a promising material for applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
Luteolin is a kind of natural flavonoid with great potential for lipid accumulation intervention. However, the poor water solubility and non-targeted release greatly diminish its efficiency. In this study, 4-aminophenyl β-D-galactopyranoside (Gal-NH2)/mulberry leaf polysaccharides- lysozyme/luteolin nanoparticles (Gal-MPL/Lut) were fabricated via amide reaction, self-assembly process and electrostatic interaction. The nanoparticles could hepatic-target of Lut and enhance action on liver tissue by specific recognition of asialoglycoprotein receptor (ASGPR). Physicochemical characterization of the nanoparticles showed a spherical shape with a uniform particle size distribution (77.8 ± 2.6 nm) with a polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.22 ± 0.06. Subsequently, in HepG2 cells model, administration with hepatic-targeted Gal-MPL/Lut nanoparticles promoted the cellular uptake of Lut, and regulated lipid metabolism manifested by remarkably inhibiting total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) expression levels through the modulation of PI3K/SIRT-1/FAS/CEBP-α signaling pathway. This study provides a promising strategy for a highly hepatic-targeted therapy to ameliorate lipid accumulation using natural medicines facilitated by nano-technology.

Abstract
The present research was undertaken to develop semi-IPN hydrogel matrix tablets of tara gum (TG) and carboxymethyl TG (CMTG) for sustained gastrointestinal delivery of highly water soluble tramadol hydrochloride (TH). The matrix tablets were developed by a hybrid process of wet granulation and direct compression technique. Carboxymethyl TG was crosslinked with dual cross-linking ions (Al3+/Ca2+). The uncross-linked component of the semi-IPN matrix was either incorporated within the granules (intragranular TG) or incorporated outside the granules (extragranular TG), prior to compression. The effect of intragranular/extragranular TG on the swelling, erosion and TH release characteristics from the semi-IPN hydrogel matrix tablets was investigated. The key finding of the investigation indicated that intragranular TG expedited TH release, while extragranular TG sustained TH release. Moreover, the effect of cross-linking ions on viscosity, rigidity, cross-link density and TH release behavior from hydrogel matrices was investigated. In-vivo pharmacokinetic performance of the optimized extragranular TG semi-IPN hydrogel matrix (F15) indicated sustained TH release in gastrointestinal milieu.

Abstract
Researching on potential biopolymer sources with the aim of developing edible films with better mechanical and barrier properties has become innovative as it would be a key factor to minimize the use of synthetic polymers in food packaging. Therefore, different biopolymers such as galactomannan have been gaining attention recently. Fenugreek seed gum is a rich source of galactomannan which is minimally researched on its applicability in edible film making. The degree of galactose substitution and polymerization are the main factors that determine the functional properties of galactomannan. A strong and cohesive film matrix cannot be produced from fenugreek seed gum as its molecular interaction is weakened due to the high galactose substitution with a high galactose/mannose ratio, 1:1. Structural modifications of galactomannan in fenugreek seed gum will lead to films with the required mechanical properties. Hence, this review summarizes recent scientific studies on the limitations of fenugreek seed gum as a film forming agent and the specific modification techniques that can be applied in order to increase its film forming capability and performance.

Abstract
In this study, the modified citrus peel pectins (CPPs) were successfully produced by electrochemistry with varying NaCl concentrations of 0, 0.01 % and 0.1 % w/v using an H-type cell at 40 mA current. After 4 h, the pH and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) of oxidized CPP solution in the anodic region were 2.00- 2.52 and 371.17- 564.45 mV, respectively, due to the electrolysis of water, whereas those of reduced CPP solution in cathodic region were 9.46- 10.84 and - 202.77 ~ -230.57 mV. The modified CPPs in the anodic region (A-0, A-0.01, and A-0.1) exhibited significantly higher weight-average molecular weights and methyl esterification degrees than those in the cathodic region (C-0, C-0.01 and C-0.1). In contrast, the K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ contents of A-0, A-0.01, and A-0.1 were lower than those of C-0, C-0.01 and C-0.1 due to the electrophoretic migration. Furthermore, the antioxidant activities of A-0 and A-0.01 solutions were stronger than those of the C-0, C-0.01, and C-0.1, while rheological and texture properties of their hydrogels showed contradictory results. Finally, the potential structure-function relationships of CPPs were explored by combining PCA and correlation analysis. Overall, this study introduced a potential approach for pectin purification and functional low-methoxyl pectin manufacturing.

Abstract
A new pH-sensitive film was developed using Artemisia sphaerocephala Krasch. gum (ASKG), soybean protein isolate (SPI), and natural anthocyanin extracted from Lycium ruthenicum Murr. The film was prepared by adsorbing anthocyanins dissolved in an acidified alcohol solution on a solid matrix. ASKG and SPI were used as the solid matrix for the immobilization of the Lycium ruthenicum Murr. anthocyanin extract, which was absorbed into the film as a natural dye using the facile-dip method. Regarding the mechanical properties of the pH-sensitive film, the tensile strength (TS) values increased approximately 2-5-fold, but the elongation at break (EB) values decreased significantly by about 60% to 95%. With the increase in anthocyanin concentration, the oxygen permeability (OP) values first decreased by about 85%, and then increased by about 364%. The water vapor permeability (WVP) values increased by about 63%, and then decreased by about 20%. Colorimetric analysis of the films revealed variations in color at different pH values (pH 2.0-10.0). Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra and XRD patterns indicated compatibility among ASKG, SPI, and anthocyanin extracts. In addition, an application test was conducted to establish a correlation between film color change and carp meat spoilage. At storage temperatures of 25 °C and 4 °C, when the meat was totally spoiled, the TVB-N values reached 99.80 ± 2.53 mg/100 g and 58.75 ± 1.49 mg/100 g, and the film's color changed from red to light brown and from red to yellowish green, respectively. Therefore, this pH-sensitive film could be used as an indicator to monitor the freshness of meat during storage.

Abstract
Bioactive functional coatings constitute a trendy topic due to they reduce postharvest fruit losses worldwide. Also, they could be carriers of biocompounds providing health benefits to the consumer. In this work, an innovative natural bioactive coating based on Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES) and Larrea divaricata extract was optimized by mixture-mixture design for the management of postharvest diseases caused by Monilinia fructicola. A NADES composed of lactic acid-glucose-water (LGH) for phenolic extraction from L. divaricata was optimized by a Simplex Lattice design and response surface methodology (RSM).Then, a d-optimal mixture-mixture design was carried out in order to optimize the bioactive coating composition, being the optimal proportion of 0.7 L. divaricata-LGH extract and 0.3 NADES plasticizer (composed by glycerol, citric acid and water). The optimal biocoating achieved an in vitro antimicrobial activity of 72 % against M. fructicola. Interestingly, NADES plasticizer improves the biocoating functionality, creating a smooth and uniform surface.

Abstract
Tara gum (TG) was derivatized to carboxymethyl TG (CMTG) and then cross-linked with Al3+/Ca2+ ions to prepare Al/Ca cross-linked CMTG matrices for sustained delivery of Tramadol Hydrochloride (TH), a highly water-soluble drug. The effect of Al3+/Ca2+ ions concentration on swelling, erosion, and drug release behavior from Al/Ca-CMTG matrices was investigated. Al-CMTG matrices had greater cross-linking density, produced a more rigid and denser hydrogel layer than Ca-CMTG matrices. The rate of swelling, erosion, and in vitro drug release from Al-CMTG matrices was slower than from Ca-CMTG matrices. The most important finding of our study indicated that at the same concentration of cross-linking ions, the release of TH from Al-CMTG matrices was slower compared to Ca-CMTG matrices. The optimized formulation containing 9 % w/w AlCl3 in CMTG matrices released TH in a sustained manner up to 12 h in the gastrointestinal milieu. Moreover, it was observed that the prepared optimized formulation exhibited a more sustained release of TH compared to the marketed product.

Abstract
Biodegradable films intend to replace polymers derived from petroleum. The effect of pectin and Tara gum on the properties of films prepared with rice starch and glycerol was studied in this context. FTIR analysis determined the presence of complex interactions between the components. SEM showed regular film surface with minor roughness. The evaluation of mechanical properties of the films proved the importance of pectin, Tara gum and glycerol concentration. When the proportion of pectin to Tara gum was 1:1, the tension at break, the elongation and the solubility reached the highest values while the water vapor permeability dropped to a minimum. Statistical analysis demonstrated non-linear behavior between composition and properties of the films and stated the importance of interactions between the components. Films produced from rice starch and glycerol in combination with pectin and Tara gum present competitive properties in terms of elongation, tensile stress, permeability to water vapor and solubility, displaying a uniform structure suitable for the packaging of food materials.

Abstract
Perishable foods like fruits and vegetables, meat, fish, and dairy products have short shelf-life that causes significant postharvest losses, which poses a major challenge for food supply chains. Biopolymers have been extensively studied as sustainable alternatives to synthetic plastics, and pectin is one such biopolymer that has been used for packaging and preservation of foods. Pectin is obtained from abundantly available low-cost sources such as agricultural or food processing wastes and by products. This review is a complete account of pectin extraction from agro-wastes, development of pectin-based composite films and coatings, their characterizations, and their applications in food packaging and preservation. Compared to conventional chemical extraction, supercritical water, ultrasound, and microwave assisted extractions are a few examples of modern and more efficient pectin extraction processes that generate almost no hazardous effluents, and thus, such extraction techniques are more environment friendly. Pectin-based films and coatings can be functionalized with natural active agents such as essential oils and other phytochemicals to improve their moisture barrier, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Application of pectin-based active films and coatings effectively improved shelf-life of fresh cut-fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, poultry, milk, and other food perishable products.

Abstract
Pectin-based edible film plasticized with glycerol has been developed, and the effect of pectin and glycerol concentration was optimized using response surface methodology for better mechanical properties and transparency. The upper and lower concentration of pectin (3-5 g) and glycerol (15%-25%) concentration ranges were considered in this study based on the preliminary experiment. The responses of the edible film determined were tensile strength, elongation at break and elastic modulus and opacity. The interaction effects of glycerol and pectin concentrations on edible film properties significantly affected the film properties. Tensile strength and opacity were positively affected by pectin concentrations; however, elastic modulus and elongation at break were negatively affected. Glycerol concentration negatively affected the edible film's tensile strength and elastic modulus. The decrease in the opacity of the biofilm was observed as the pectin concentration increased; however, glycerol had not shown a significant influence on opacity. The numerical optimization provided 4 g of pectin, and 20% of glycerol showed a strong and transparent edible film. The TGA curve showed that the maximum weight loss occurred between the temperatures 250-400 °C due to the loss of polysaccharides. From FTIR analysis, observed peaks around 1037 cm-1 represented the C-O-C stretching vibrations of the saccharide found in pectin and glycerol.

Abstract
Aqueous extract of fruit obtained from Ficus racemosa enriched with phenolic components was used for the first time to fabricate chitosan (CS) and sodium alginate (SA)-based edible films. The edible films supplemented with Ficus fruit aqueous extract (FFE) were characterized physiochemically (using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Texture analyser (TA), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and colourimeter) and biologically (using antioxidant assays). CS-SA-FFA films showed high thermal stability and high antioxidant properties. The addition of FFA into CS-SA film decreased transparency, crystallinity, tensile strength (TS), and water vapour permeability (WVP) but ameliorate moisture content (MC), elongation at break (EAB) and film thickness. The overall increase in thermal stability and antioxidant property of CS-SA-FFA films demonstrated that FFA could be alternatively used as a potent natural plant-based extract for the development of food packaging material with improved physicochemical and antioxidant properties.

Abstract
Food sectors are facing issues as a result of food scarcity, which is exacerbated by rising populations and demand for food. Food is ordinarily wrapped and packaged using petroleum-based plastics such as polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, and others. However, the excessive use of these polymers has environmental and health risks. As a result, much research is currently focused on the use of bio-based materials for food packaging. Biodegradable polymers that are compatible with food products are used to make edible packaging materials. These can be ingested with food and provide consumers with additional health benefits. Recent research has shifted its focus to multilayer coatings and films-based food packaging, which can provide a material with additional distinct features. The aim of this review article is to investigate the properties and applications of several bio-based polymers in food packaging. The several types of edible film and coating production technologies are also covered separately. Furthermore, the use of edible films and coatings in the food industry has been examined, and their advantages over traditional materials are also discussed.

Abstract
Mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) are ultraviolet-absorbing compounds and have antioxidant functions. In this paper, MAAs were added into fish gelatin/sodium alginate films as an anti-ultraviolet additive. The effects of 0–5% MAAs (w/w, MAAs/fish gelatin) on the physical properties, antioxidant properties, antibacterial properties and anti-ultraviolet properties of fish gelatin/sodium alginate films were investigated. The results suggest that the content of the MAAs influenced the mechanical properties. The water content, swelling and water vapor permeability of the films were not altered with the addition of MAAs. In addition, the composite films showed effective antioxidant activity and antimicrobial activity. The incorporation of MAAs significantly improved the DPPH radical scavenging activity of the films from 35.77% to 46.61%. Moreover, the block ultraviolet rays’ ability was also greatly improved when the film mixed with the MAAs and when the value of the light transmission was 0.6% at 350 nm. Compared with the pure composite film, the growth of E. coli covered by the composite film with 3.75% and 5% MAAs exhibited the best survival rate. These results reveal that MAAs are a good film-forming substrate, and MAAs have good potential to prepare anti-ultraviolet active films and antioxidant active films for applications. Overall, this project provides a theoretical basis for the study of active composite films with anti-ultraviolet activities, and it provides new ideas for the application of MAAs.

Abstract
Fupenzi (Rubus chingii Hu) is a dried and immature fruit in East China, which has effects of nourishing kidneys, solidifying essence, and otherwise. Because Fupenzi was often adulterated and replaced with inferior things, this paper had researched Fupenzi and its adulterant raspberry. A new type of visible sensor was constructed by using Au nanoparticles (AuNPs), which was modified by the surface-active agent and combined with the ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectrum technology. It was found that the change in particle size after the interaction of AuNPs and adulterants will lead to color change. In this paper, the RGB (red, green, and blue) values of the solution were extracted to correlate the color with the concentration of adulterants, and the relationship between the absorption peak intensity and the concentration of adulterants was established. The results showed that the intensity of an absorption peak is related to adulteration concentration, and the color of the solution changed from red to gray as the particle size changed. The visual sensor constructed based on the above principle is a fast and precise method to detect adulteration with different concentrations, which has a potential application value in real-time and rapid detection of Fupenzi’s quality.

Abstract
Biodegradable films based on mung bean protein (1, 3 and 5%) incorporated with cumin essential oil (EO) (0, 0.25 and 0.5 ml/g protein) were developed. Adding cumin oil and increasing the protein content enhanced the thickness, tensile strength and yellowness. Films incorporated with EO exhibited less water vapor permeability and water solubility, as compared to the control films. A higher antioxidant activity was also obtained by increasing the EO and protein ratios. Films with higher levels of protein displayed lower thermal stability with a lower degradation temperature, as suggested by thermo-gravimetric analyses. In addition, the incorporation of EO reduced thermal stability, as confirmed by the higher weight loss and lower degradation temperature. Furthermore, mung bean protein films containing 0.5 ml cumin oil/g protein had suitable physical characteristics, antioxidant activities, water barrier properties and thermal stability; thus, they can be used as appropriate biodegradable packaging materials for food preservation.

Abstract
To prolong the storage period of blueberry and improve its shelf-life quality, an edible coating based on chitosan was developed, and different contents of pectin were added to the coating. In this study, Jerusalem artichoke residue was used as a source of pectin, which is a byproduct of the processing of inulin. The extracted pectin has a low cost and high quality, which is very suitable for the preservation of coating. The coating was prepared and the chemical properties of the coating were characterized by SEM, XRD, TG, and FTIR. The barrier properties of the coating were analyzed by thickness, water content, solubility, and water vapor permeability. The results showed that the pectin coating exhibited excellent performance in blueberry preservation. Following 16 days of storage, the decay and weight loss rates of blueberry treated with 0.2% pectin coating decreased by 33 and 22%, respectively. Moreover, the organic acid consumption of the coated blueberry slowed and the anthocyanins were better preserved. As a low-cost, safe, and efficient technology, the pectin chitosan composite coating has significant potential in the berries preservation industry.

Abstract
Edible films with essential oils (EOs) are becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to synthetic packaging due to their environmentally friendly properties and ability as carriers of active compounds. However, the required amounts of EOs to impart effective antimicrobial properties generally exceed the organoleptic acceptance levels. However, by nanoemulsifying EOs, it is possible to increase their antimicrobial activity while reducing the amount required. This review provides an overview of the physico-chemical and mechanical properties of polysaccharide-based edible films incorporated with EOs nanoemulsions and of their application to the preservation of different food types. By incorporating EOs nanoemulsions into the packaging matrix, these edible films can help to extend the shelf-life of food products while also improving the quality and safety of the food product during storage. It can be concluded that these edible films have the potential to be used in the food industry as a green, sustainable, and biodegradable method for perishable foods preservation.

Abstract
The objective of the study was to prepare active films based on pectin and polyphenol-rich extracts from Tommy Atkins mango peels. Aqueous and methanolic extracts showed a variety of phenolic compounds that were identified by UPLC-MS analysis, and a high content of total phenolics that were quantified by the Folin-Ciocalteau method. The methanolic extract showed better results in antioxidant tests and was more effective in inhibiting the growth of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The pectin extracted from mango peels showed good thermal stability and a degree of methoxylation of 58.3% by 1H NMR. The films containing the phenolic extracts showed lower water vapor permeability when compared to the control film (without any phenolic extracts). The incorporation of the extracts led to an increase in elongation (ε) and a decrease in tensile strength (σ) and modulus of elasticity (Y). The films with aqueous or methanolic extracts showed higher antioxidant activity in terms of inhibition of the DPPH radical. Therefore, the films developed in this work are presented as a promising alternative for food packaging and/or coating applications.

Abstract
Pectin films were developed by incorporating a halophyte plant Salicornia ramosissima (dry powder from stem parts) to modify the film’s properties. The films’ physicomechanical properties, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and microstructure, as well as their biodegradation capacity in soil and seawater, were evaluated. The inclusion of S. ramosissima significantly increased the thickness (0.25 ± 0.01 mm; control 0.18 ± 0.01 mm), color parameters a* (4.96 ± 0.30; control 3.29 ± 0.16) and b* (28.62 ± 0.51; control 12.74 ± 0.75), water vapor permeability (1.62 × 10−9 ± 1.09 × 10−10 (g/m·s·Pa); control 1.24 × 10−9 ± 6.58 × 10−11 (g/m·s·Pa)), water solubility (50.50 ± 5.00%; control 11.56 ± 5.56%), and elongation at break (5.89 ± 0.29%; control 3.91 ± 0.62%). On the other hand, L* (48.84 ± 1.60), tensile strength (0.13 ± 0.02 MPa), and Young’s modulus (0.01 ± 0 MPa) presented lower values compared with the control (L* 81.20 ± 1.60; 4.19 ± 0.82 MPa; 0.93 ± 0.12 MPa), while the moisture content varied between 30% and 45%, for the film with S. ramosissima and the control film, respectively. The addition of S. ramosissima led to opaque films with relatively heterogeneous microstructures. The films showed also good biodegradation capacity—after 21 days in soil (around 90%), and after 30 days in seawater (fully fragmented). These results show that pectin films with S. ramosissima may have great potential to be used in the future as an eco-friendly food packaging material.

Abstract
Here we report on the robust synthesis of zinc sulfide nanoparticles (ZnSNP) using a simple one-pot reaction. The prepared ZnSNP was characterized and confirmed to be a petal-shaped nanoparticle. The ZnSNP was added to fabricate the pectin/agar-based functional composite film. The integration of ZnSNP has greatly improved the physical properties of the film, such as mechanical and UV protection properties, without significantly changing the transparency of the film. The addition of the nanofillers did not affect the film's hydrophobicity, water vapor barrier, and thermal properties. Moreover, the composite film showed intense antibacterial activity against foodborne pathogenic bacteria, E. coli and L. monocytogenes. The functional bio-nanocomposite films based on pectin/agar have high potential in active packaging applications.

Abstract
The wastage of food products is a major challenge for the food industry. In this regard, the use of edible films and coatings have gained much attention due to their ability to prevent the spoilage of the food products during handling, transport, and storage. This has effectively helped in extending the shelf-life of the food products. Among the various polymers, polysaccharides have been explored to develop edible films and coatings in the last decade. Such polymeric systems have shown great promise in microbial food safety applications. The inclusion of essential oils (EOs) within the polysaccharide matrices has further improved the functional properties of the edible films and coatings. The current review will discuss the different types of polysaccharides, EOs, methods of preparing edible films and coatings, and the characterization methods for the EO-loaded polysaccharide films. The mechanism of the antimicrobial activity of the EOs has also been discussed in brief.

Abstract
The stone of Cornus mas L. remains the least known morphological part of this plant, whereas the fruit is appreciated for both consumption purposes and biological activity. The stone is considered to be a byproduct of fruit processing and very little is known about its phytochemical composition and biological properties. In this study, the complete qualitative determination of hydrolyzable tannins, their quantitative analysis, total polyphenolic content, and antioxidant properties of the stone of C. mas are presented for the first time. The 37 identified compounds included the following: various gallotannins (11), monomeric ellagitannins (7), dimeric ellagitannins (10), and trimeric ellagitannins (7). The presence of free gallic acid and ellagic acid was also reported. Our results demonstrate that C. mas stone is a source of various bioactive hydrolyzable tannins and shows high antioxidant activity which could allow potential utilization of this raw material for recovery of valuable pharmaceutical or nutraceutical substances. The principal novelty of our findings is that hydrolyzable tannins, unlike other polyphenols, have been earlier omitted in the evaluation of the biological activities of C. mas. Additionally, the potential recovery of these bioactive chemicals from the byproduct is in line with the ideas of green chemistry and sustainable production.

Abstract
In this study, Lactococcus lactis was embedded in a film of corn starch (NS) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) prepared using a casting method. At a CMC:NS ratio of 5:5, the composite film had the best comprehensive properties. Scanning electron microscopy images clearly showed that L. lactis was effectively embedded. The film with 1.5 % L. lactis showed the best performance and the lowest water vapor transmission rate (5.54 × 10-11 g/m s Pa. In addition, the edible film retained a viable count of 5.64 log CFU/g of L. lactis when stored at 4 °C for 30 days. The composite film with 1.5 % L. lactis showed the highest release of nisin (3.35 mg/mL) and good antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (53.53 %) after 8 days. Therefore, this edible film is a viable alternative antimicrobial strategy for the active packaging of foods containing low moisture content.
