Abstract
This study was conducted to identify the optimal conditions and evaluate the feasibility of deep eutectic solvent (DES)-based ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) for utilizing maca (Lepidium meyenii) leaves, an agricultural by-product, as functional materials. The extraction parameters influencing the recovery of saponins and polyphenols, which are major bioactive compounds, were analyzed using the Taguchi method. Results: Signal-to-noise ratios and analysis of variance indicated that the liquid-solid ratio was the most critical factor for optimizing the extraction process. The optimal extraction conditions were determined to be a liquid-solid ratio of 40 mL/g, a water content in DES of 30%, an extraction time of 30 min, and an ultrasonic power of 300 W in the DES system consisting of choline chloride and glycerin in the molar ratio of 1:2. Maca leaf extract obtained under optimized DES-based UAE conditions exhibited higher bioactive compounds content and antioxidant activity compared with that obtained by hot water extraction. Therefore, the DES-based UAE method is a promising, eco-friendly alternative for extracting bioactive compounds from maca leaves.

Abstract
Tea saponin has garnered tremendous interest for its potential use in surfactant and drug synthesis. This research was designed to develop a technique based on pH-responsive switchable deep eutectic solvents (SDESs) for extracting tea saponins from Camellia oleifera seed meal. SDES synthesized from hexanoic acid and triethanolamine (1:1 molar ratio) offered the optimum extractive performance and the optimal conditions were obtained through single-factor experiments: 30 wt% water content in SDES, solid-liquid ratio of 1:30 g/mL, 60°C extraction temperature, 30 min extraction time, and acid volume of 1500 µL. The extraction yield was 162.14 mg/g after optimization, which increased by 15.65% and 9.47% compared to water and ethanol extraction methods, respectively. After pH adjustment, 98.95% of the tea saponins were recovered in the bottom phase. After precipitation and freeze-drying procedures, the purity of the tea saponin solid was 62.9%.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Excessive lipogenesis of the skin triggers some dermatological concerns, such as enlarged pores, acne, and blackheads. Although topical drug treatments can offer temporary relief, their prolonged usage may lead to side effects of dryness, irritation, or allergic reactions. Consequently, the development of safer and efficacious ingredients in cosmetics for managing sebum overproduction represents a significant yet challenging endeavor. AIM Saponins were extracted from tea (Camellia sinensis) seed meal and purified by macroporous resin in order to investigate the impact of tea seed saponins (TSS) on lipid production in human immortalized sebaceous cells. Moreover, we attempted to reveal the underlying mechanism of TSS on the sebosuppression effect in SZ95 sebocytes stimulated by linoleic acid (LA). METHODS The compositions and chemical structures of TSS were determined using UV-vis absorption spectrum, Fourier transform-infrared (FTIR) spectrum, and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. An in vitro model of cellular lipid accumulation induced by LA was established. Total lipid synthesis in intracellular SZ95 sebocytes was assessed through Nile Red staining, while triglyceride, cholesterol, and fatty acids were quantified by commercially assay kits. Western blot and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction were employed to analyze the protein expression levels involved in the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway as well as the downstream protein and mRNA expressions of sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1 (SREBP-1), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ), and fatty acid synthase (FAS). The localizations of SREBP-1 within the cytoplasm or nucleus were characterized using immunofluorescence staining. RESULTS Five saponins were identified in the extracted TSS, all of which were oleanic acid-type pentacyclic triterpenes. TSS treatment significantly alleviated LA-induced lipid accumulation in SZ95 sebocytes. In addition, TSS activated the AMPK/mTOR pathway and downregulated the downstream protein and mRNA expression of transcription factors and enzymes, including SREBP-1, PPARγ, and FAS. Moreover, the TSS blocked the nuclear transfer of SREBP-1 from cytoplasm to nucleus. CONCLUSION In human sebocytes, TSS exhibited sebosuppressive effect as revealed by the inhibited production of total lipids as well as triglyceride, cholesterol, and fatty acids. Moreover, the anti-lipogenesis mechanism by TSS involved the activation of the AMPK/mTOR pathway and downregulated downstream transcription factors and enzymes of SREBP-1, PPARγ, and FAS. Additionally, TSS blocked the SREBP-1 nuclear translocation. These results may justify the potent of TSS as a new candidate for modulating lipogenesis in human SZ95 sebocytes.

Abstract
Black tea's quality and flavor are largely influenced by its processing stages, which affect its volatile and non-volatile phytochemicals. This study aimed to optimized black tea manufacturing by investigating withering time, fermentation time, and temperature's impact on sensory quality. Using a U*15 (157) uniform design, optimal conditions were determined: 14 h of withering, 5.6 h of fermentation, and a 34 °C temperature. A verification experiment analyzed the volatile and non-volatile profiles. HPLC, GC-MS, and LC-MS revealed dynamic changes in phytochemicals. Among 157 VOCs and 2642 metabolites, 19 VOCs (VIP > 1.5) were crucial for aroma, while 50 (VIP > 1.5, p < 0.01) characteristic metabolites were identified. During processing, fragrant volatile compounds like linalool oxides, geraniol, benzeneacetaldehyde, benzaldehyde, methyl salicylate, and linalyl acetate increased, contributing to rose and honey like aromas. These changes were crucial in developing the characteristic flavor and color of black tea. Twenty-four new compounds formed, while 80 grassy odor volatiles decreased. Non-volatile metabolites changed notably, with decreased catechins and increased gallic acid. Theaflavin compounds rose initially but declined later. This study outlines metabolite changes in Yunkang 10 black tea, crucial for flavor enhancement and quality control.

Abstract
Tea foam properties, crucial indicators of tea quality, have gained renewed interest due to their potential applications in innovative beverages and foods. This study investigated the foaming properties and chemical foundations of six major tea categories through morphological observations and biochemical analyses. White tea exhibited the highest foaming ability at 56.28%, while black tea showed the best foam stability at 84.01%. Conversely, green tea had the lowest foaming ability (10.83%) and foam stability (54.24%). These superior foaming characteristics are attributed to the relatively low lipid content and acidic pH values. Surprisingly, no significant correlation was found between tea saponin content and foaming properties. Instead, specific amino acids (including Tyr, Gaba, Phe, Ile, and Leu) and catechins (GA and CG) were identified as potential contributors. These results deepen our understanding of tea foam formation and offer insights into utilizing tea-derived plant-based foams in food products.

Abstract
Camellia saponins are important by-products of Camellia Oleifer Abel. processing. In this study, an eco-friendly method based on natural deep eutectic solvents (NaDESs, proline and glycerol at a molar ratio of 2:5) was established to extract saponins from C.oleifera cakes. The content of saponin (702.22 ± 1.28 mg/g) obtained using NaDES was higher than those extracted using water or methanol. UPLC-Q-TOF MS analysis of chemical structure showed that the difference in the extraction technique alter individual saponins. A widely targeted metabolomic approach and KEGG metabolic pathway analysis showed that the upregulated metabolites in the NaDES-based extract mainly included flavonoids, alkaloids, and phenolic acids; and they were involved in arginine and proline metabolism, metabolic pathways, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, and flavonoid biosynthesis. The present study proposes a selective substitute for use in the extraction of camellia saponins with composition analysis.

Abstract
Tea saponins have high surface-active and biological activities and are widely used in chemicals, food, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides. Tea saponins are usually extracted using ethanol or water, but both methods have their disadvantages, including a negative impact on the environment, high energy consumption, and low purity. In this study, we explored an effective process for extracting tea saponins from tea meal using deep eutectic solvents combined with ultrasonic extraction and enzymatic techniques. The experimental results showed that a high extraction efficiency of 20.93 ± 0.48% could be achieved in 20 min using an ultrasonic power of 40% and a binary DES consisting of betaine and ethylene glycol (with a molar ratio of 1:3) at a material-liquid ratio of 1:35 and that the purity of the tea saponins after purification by a large-pore adsorption resin reached 95.94%, which was higher than that of commercially available standard tea saponin samples. In addition, the extracted tea saponins were evaluated for their antioxidant and bacteriostatic activities using chemical and biological methods; the results showed that the tea saponins extracted using these methods possessed antioxidant properties and displayed significant antibacterial activity. Therefore, the present study developed a method for using deep eutectic solvents as an environmentally friendly technological solution for obtaining high-purity tea saponins from tea meal oil. This is expected to replace the current organic solvent and water extraction process and has great potential for industrial development and a number of possible applications.

Abstract
Nanocellulose materials have been widely used in biomedicine, food packaging, aerospace, composite material, and other fields. In this work, cellulose obtained from Camellia shells through alkali boiling and subbleaching was micro-dissolved and regenerated using the DMAc (N,N-Dimethylacetamide)/LiCl system, and TOCNs (TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers) with different degrees of oxidation. The membrane was prepared by filtration of polytetrafluoroethylene (pore size 0.1 μm), and the oxidized nanocellulose film was obtained after drying, Then, the crystallinity, mechanical properties and oxygen barrier properties of the TOCN film were investigated. Furthermore, based on TS (tea saponin) from Camellia oleifera seed cake and TOCNs, TS-TOCN film was prepared by the heterogeneous reaction. The TS-TOCN film not only shows excellent oxygen barrier properties (the oxygen permeability is 2.88 cc·m-2·d-1) but also has good antibacterial effects on both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. The antibacterial property is comparable to ZnO-TOCN with the same antibacterial content prepared by the in-situ deposition method. Antioxidant activity tests in vitro showed that TS-TOCN had a significant scavenging effect on DPPH (2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radicals. This design strategy makes it possible for inexpensive and abundant Camellia oleifera remainders to be widely used in the field of biobased materials.

Abstract
This work investigated and compared the physicochemical characteristics, and antioxidant and antihyperglycemic properties in vitro of polysaccharides from a single banana flower variety (BFPs) extracted by different methods. BFPs extracted using hot water (HWE), acidic (CAE), alkaline (AAE), enzymatic (EAE), ultrasonic (UAE) and hot water-alkaline (HAE) methods showed different chemical composition, monosaccharide composition, molecular weight, chain conformation and surface morphology, but similar infrared spectra characteristic, main glycosidic residues, crystalline internal and thermal stability, suggesting that six methods have diverse impacts on the degradation of BFPs without changing the main structure. Then, among six BFPs, the stronger antioxidant activity in vitro was found in BFP extracted by HAE, which was attributed to its maximum uronic acid content (21.67 %) and phenolic content (0.73 %), and moderate molecular weight (158.48 kDa). The highest arabinose and guluronic acid contents (18.59 % and 1.31 % in molar ratios, respectively) and the lowest uronic acid content (14.30 %) in BFP extracted by HWE contributed to its better α-glucosidase inhibitory activity in vitro (66.55 %). The data offered theoretical evidence for choosing suitable extraction methods to acquire BFPs with targeted biological activities for applications, in which HAE and HWE could serve as beneficial methods for preparing antioxidant BFP and antihyperglycemic BFP, respectively.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the present study, natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) as a novel green tool were used for the recovery of bioactive compounds with respect to the valorization of artichoke outer petals. NADES coupled with ultrasound-assisted extraction was applied by varying the type of hydrogen bond acceptors (choline chloride or betain) and hydrogen bond donors (sucrose, lactic acid, citric acid, oxalic acid and glycerol) in the NADES mixtures. Thereafter, extraction efficacy was assessed in terms of total phenolic content, antioxidant capacity and individual phenolic composition and their levels by comparing the results obtained by NADES with those for a reference methanolic extract. RESULTS Based on the results of the present study, the use of choline chloride and lactic acid mixtures was superior for obtaining extracts with high levels of phenolic compounds (12.96 g GAE kg-1 DW) and high antioxidant potential (60.68 g TE kg-1 DW). In addition, gallic acid, syringic acid, chlorogenic acid, ferulic acid, sinapic acid, luteolin, apigenin, rutin and quercetin were detected in all extracts by chromatographic evaluation. As major phenolic compounds, chlorogenic acid and ferulic acid were found to be maximum in lactic acid-based NADES mixtures. CONCLUSION The present study reveals the potential treatment of various plants, wastes or by-products with NADES combined with an ultrasonication method for the extraction of bioactive compounds with enhanced recovery and selectivity, with the aim of incorporating them into various food and pharmaceutical formulations. © 2023 The Authors. Abstract
Fucoidan (FU), a natural marine polysaccharide, is an immunomodulator with great potential in tumor immunotherapy. In this work, a FU encapsulated nanoparticle named QU@FU-TS was developed, which contained the anticancer phytochemical quercetin (QU) and had the potential for cancer chemo-immunotherapy. QU@FU-TS were constructed through molecular self-assembly using green material tea saponin (TS) as the linking molecule. The molecular dynamics (MD) simulation showed that QU was bound to the hydrophobic tail of TS. At the same time, FU spontaneously assembled with the hydrophilic head of TS to form the outer layer of the QU@FU-TS. The molecular interactions between QU and TS were mainly π-stacking and hydrogen bonds. The bonding of FU and TS was maintained through the formation of multiple hydrogen bonds between the sulfate ester group and the hydroxy group. The inhibitory effects of QU@FU-TS on A549 cell proliferation were more potent than that by free QU. The antitumor activity of QU@FU-TS was mediated through various mechanisms, including the induction of oxidative stress, blocking cell cycle progression, and promoting cell apoptosis. Moreover, QU@FU-TS has been demonstrated to impede the proliferation and migration of cancer cells in vivo. The expression levels of macrophage surface markers increased under the treatment of QU@FU-TS, suggesting the potential of QU@FU-TS to serve as an immunotherapeutic agent by promoting macrophage activation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recovery of high-purity tea saponin (TS), a promising non-ionic surfactant with well-documented properties, is one of the major challenges to broadening its industrial applications. In this study, an innovative and sustainable strategy for the highly-efficient purification of TS was developed by using well-designed highly-porous polymeric adsorbents. RESULTS The prepared Pp-A with controllable macropores (~96 nm) and appropriate surface hydrophobic properties was found more favorable for achieving high adsorption efficiency towards TS/TS-micelles. Kinetic results showed the adsorption follows the pseudo-second-order model (R2 = 0.9800), and the Langmuir model is more qualified to explicate the adsorption isotherms with Qe-TS ~ 675 mg g-1 . Thermodynamic studies revealed the monolayer adsorption of TS was an endothermic process that was conducted spontaneously. Interestingly, ethanol-driven desorption (90% v/v ethanol) of TS was rapidly (< 30 min) complete due to the possible ethanol-mediated disassembling of TS-micelles. A possible mechanism that involves the interactions between the adsorbents and TS/TS-micelles, the formation and disassembling of TS-micelles was proposed to account for the highly efficient purification of TS. Afterwards, Pp-A-based adsorption method was developed to purify TS directly from industrial camellia oil production. Through selective adsorption, pre-washing, and ethanol-driven desorption, the applied Pp-A enabled the direct isolation of high-purity TS (~96%) with a recovery ratio > 90%. Notably, Pp-A exhibited excellent operational stability and is of high potential for long-term industrial application. CONCLUSION Results ensured the practical feasibility of the prepared porous adsorbents in purifying TS, and the proposed methodology is a promising industrial-scale purification strategy. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The sustainable extraction of saponins was investigated using natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) combined with ultrasound-assisted extraction. A novel NADES (butyric acid-urea) that was responsive to ionic strength was designed and used as the extractant. Ultrasound treatment and a catalyst ferric chloride with plant cell wall breaking function were applied to improve the extraction efficiency.Since the solubility of the NADES varied significantly with ionic strength, 95% of NADES was readily separated from the water phase after the addition of sodium chloride, while saponins remained in the water phase for easy collection. The reuse capacity of NADES, the eco-friendliness of the extraction method, and the antioxidant activity of the extract were further evaluated.NADES was continuously recovered and used to extract Polygonatum sibiricum powder: the yield of saponins did not decrease after five cycles of recovery and re-extraction. The penalty point on the "Eco-scale" suggested that the extraction method was "green" (i.e. eco-friendly).Compared with ethanol extracts, the NADES extracts showed a higher saponin concentration and antioxidant activity.The study can contribute to the sustainable and green extraction of hydrophilic active substances in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
The residue of Camellia seeds after oil extraction contains many bioactive ingredients, including tea saponin. Tea saponin has many pharmacological effects and is an excellent nonionic surfactant. The development of natural surfactants has become a hot topic in food research. This review gathers the applications of tea saponin as a surfactant in food. It focuses on the application of tea saponin in emulsions, delivery systems, extraction and fermentation, as well as the challenges and development prospects in food applications. Tea saponin shows great potential as a surfactant in food applications, which can replace some synthetic surfactants. The full utilization of tea saponin improves the comprehensive utilization value of Camellia seed residue, contributes to the sustainable development of Camellia industry and avoids resource waste.

Abstract
Soil microorganisms play important roles in promoting soil ecosystem restoration, but much of the current research has been limited to changes in microbial community structure in general, and little is known regarding the soil physicochemical property and microbial community structure. In this study, four organic fertilizers were first prepared based on tea oil camellia shell (TOCS). Our findings indicate that the application of BOFvo increased both total pore volume and BET surface area of the rhizosphere soils, as well there was a remarkable enhancement in total organic matter (TOM), total nitrogen (TN), available nitrogen (AN), total phosphorus (TP), total potassium (TK), and available potassium (AK) contents of the rhizosphere soils. Meanwhile, in comparison to the CK and CF groups, the utilization of BOFvo led to a substantial increase in both average yield and fruiting rate per plant at maturity, as well resulted in a significant increase in TN and TP contents of tea oil camellia leaves. Furthermore, our findings suggest that the application of TOCS-based organic fertilizers significantly enhances the microbial diversity in the rhizosphere soils with Proteobacteria and Ascomycota being the dominant bacterial and fungal phyla, respectively, and Rhodanobacter and Fusarium being the dominant bacterial and fungal genus, respectively. Redundancy analysis (RDA) indicates that the physicochemical characteristics of TOCS-based organic fertilizers had a significant impact on the composition and distribution of microbial communities in the rhizosphere soils. This study will facilitate the promotion and application of TOCS-based organic fertilizers, thereby establishing a foundation for the reuse of tea oil camellia waste resources.

Abstract
Traditional organic solvent extractions of tea saponins have many drawbacks. This study aimed to establish an environment-friendly and efficient technology based on deep eutectic solvents (DESs) to extract tea saponins from Camellia oleifera seed meal. The solvent consisting of choline chloride and methylurea was screened as optimal DES. Under the optimal extraction conditions obtained by response surface methodology, the extraction yield of tea saponins reached 94.36 mg/g, which increased by 27% compared with ethanol extraction, while the extraction time was reduced by 50%. Analysis of UV, FT-IR, and UPLC-Q/TOF-MS indicated tea saponins did not alter during DES extraction. Surface activity and emulsification evaluation showed that extracted tea saponins could reduce interfacial tension at the oil-water interface with excellent foamability and foam stability, and they could form nanoemulsions (d32 < 200 nm) with excellent stability. This study provides a suitable approach for the efficient extraction of tea saponins.

Abstract
High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), headspace solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-Q-Exactive HF-X mass spectrometer (UHPLC-Q-Exactive HF/MS) were carried out to reveal dynamic changes of volatile and non-volatile compounds during the withering process of black tea. A total of 118 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and 648 metabolites were identified in fresh and withered tea-leaves, respectively. Among them, 47 VOCs (OAV > 1.0) for the aroma formation, and 46 characteristic metabolites (VIP > 1.50, p < 0.01) selected through orthonormal partial least squares-discriminant analysis, indicated the withering contribution during black tea processing. Overall, the withering promoted alcohols, aldehydes, phenols, heterocyclic oxygen, hydrocarbons and halogenated hydrocarbons through relevant hydrolyzation, decomposition, terpene synthesis, and O-methylation. The hydrolyzation, O-methylation, condensation and N-acylation of kaempferol glycosides, quercetin glycosides, ester catechins, and gallic acid generated the accumulation of methoxyl flavonoids and flavonoid glucosides, dihydrokaempferol, syringic acid, theaflavins, and N-acylated amino acids, respectively.

Abstract
Saponins, consisting of sapogenins as their aglycones and carbohydrate chains, are widely found in plants and some marine organisms. Due to the complexity of the structure of saponins, involving different types of sapogenins and sugar moieties, investigation of their absorption and metabolism is limited, which further hinders the explanation of their bioactivities. Large molecular weight and complex structures limit the direct absorption of saponins rendering their low bioavailability. As such, their major modes of action may be due to interaction with the gastrointestinal environment, such as enzymes and nutrients, and interaction with the gut microbiota. Many studies have reported the interaction between saponins and gut microbiota, that is, the effects of saponins on changing the composition of gut microbiota, and gut microbiota playing an indispensable role in the biotransformation of saponins into sapogenins. However, the metabolic routes of saponins by gut microbiota and their mutual interactions are still sparse. Thus, this review summarizes the chemistry, absorption, and metabolic pathways of saponins, as well as their interactions with gut microbiota and impacts on gut health, to better understand how saponins exert their health-promoting functions.

Abstract
Triterpenoids derived from natural products can exert antihyperuricemic effects. Here, we investigated the antihyperuricemic activity and mechanism of quinoa bran saponins (QBSs) in hyperuricemic mouse and cell models. The QBS4 fraction, with the highest saponin content, was used. Fourier-transform infrared, high-performance liquid chromatography, and ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry identified 11 individual saponins in QBS4, of which the main components were hederagenin and oleanolic acid. The QBS4 effects on hyperuricemic mice (induced by adenine and potassium oxonate) were then studied. QBS4 reduced the levels of uric acid (UA), serum urea nitrogen, creatinine, and lipids in mice with hyperuricemia (HUA) and decreased renal inflammation and renal damage. Molecular analysis revealed that QBS4 may alleviate HUA by regulating the expression of key genes involved in the transport of UA and by inhibiting the activation of the PI3K/AKT/NFκB inflammatory signaling pathway. In conclusion, QBS4 has promise for using as a natural dietary supplement to treat and prevent HUA.

Abstract
Molecular interaction forces regulate the interfacial properties of oil-in-water emulsion and play a key role in the rheology and stability of the emulsion in the food industry. In this study, the effects of non-thermal plasma (NTP) treatment on the structural and functional properties of whey protein isolate (WPI) and its binding interaction with ginsenoside Rg1 (GR1) were investigated. The results based on surface hydrophobicity, infrared spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy test showed that the NTP treatment induced the unfolding of the structure of WPI and promoted the binding affinity between WPI and GR1. By comparing with untreated WPI (an α-helix content of 19.63 % and a β-sheet content of 31.66 %), there was a greater decrease in α-helix content and an increase in β-sheet content of WPI in N20-WPI (α-helix = 9.63 %, β-sheet = 39.63 %) and N20-WPI-GR1 (α-helix = 4.98 %, β-sheet = 48.66 %) groups. Importantly, the NTP treatment increased the interfacial adsorption and antioxidant capacity of the WPI-GR1 complexes, which contributed to the improvement of the rheological properties and oxidation stability of the emulsion. As a result, the NTP treatment could markedly improve the rheological and antioxidative properties of the WPI-GR1 complexes and the NTP-treated WPI-GR1 emulsions was more stable than that untreated. The present research indicated that NTP-treated formation of protein-saponin complexes could enhance the functional properties of the proteins, thus expanding their application as functional ingradients in nutritionally fortified food.

Abstract
The green extraction of bioactive compounds from date seeds was investigated using seven natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) coupled with ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE). The seven NADESs mainly consisted of choline chloride as hydrogen bond acceptors (HBA) and four sugars, two organic acids, and one polyalcohol as hydrogen bond donors (HBD) were utilized in this study. When the extraction efficiency of the NADESs was compared to that of the conventional solvents, all the NADESs showed superior bioactive compounds recovery efficacy. The lactic acid-based NADES had the highest extraction efficiency and was further optimized using the response surface method and Box-Behnken design. A four-factors including extraction time (10, 20, and 30 min), ultrasound amplitude (70, 80, and 90 %), % NADES content (30 %, 50 %, and 70 %) and solid-to-solvent ratio (1:30, 1.5:30, and 2:30 g/ml) each at three levels (-1, 0 and 1) using Box-Behnken design was applied. The % NADES content and the solid-to-solvent ratio were the major factors influencing the extraction efficiency of the total phenolic content (TPC) and the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity. The optimum extraction conditions included an extraction time of 15 min, ultrasound amplitude of 90 %, % NADES content of 70 % and solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:30 g/ml. The experimental values for TPC and DPPH at optimum extraction conditions were 145.54 ± 1.54 (mg GAE/g powder) and 719.19 ± 2.09 (mmol TE/g powder), respectively. The major phenolic compounds observed in the date seeds extracted using ChCl-LA were 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, catechin and caffeic acid. This study reveals that the extraction of date seeds with NADES in combination with UAE technique was able to recover significantly higher amounts of phenolic compounds which could find useful applications in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics industries.

Abstract
This study aimed to produce xylooligosaccharides (XOS) from Camellia oleifera Abel fruit shell (CFS) using a shell-based solid acid derived from CFS (CFS-BSA). CFS-BSA preparation was optimized by incomplete carbonization at 450 °C for 1 h, followed by sulfonation at 130 °C for 8 h to yield a -SO3H functional group concentration of 1.04 mmol/g. When CFS-BSA was used to hydrolyze CFS with a 1:5 ratio of CFS-BSA to CFS at 170 °C for 20 min, a maximum XOS yield (X2-X5) of 51.41 % was achieved, which was notably higher than when using subcritical H2O solely. CFS-BSA can be recycled and reused at least six times by sieving without a substantial loss in its catalytic activity. CFS-BSA can also be used to produce XOS from other lignocellulosic materials such as corncob (41.04 %), sugarcane bagasse (45.03 %), corn stalk (45.89 %), birchwood (46.05 %), and poplar (40.10 %).

Abstract
Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have received increasing attention in the past decade owing to their distinguished properties including biocompatibility, tunability, thermal and chemical stability. Particularly, DESs have joined forces in pharmaceutical industry, not only to efficiently separate actives from natural products, but also to dramatically increase solubility and permeability of drugs, both are critical for the drug absorption and efficacy. As a result, lately DESs have been extensively and practically adopted as versatile drug delivery systems for different routes such as nasal, transdermal and oral administration with enhanced bioavailability. This review summarizes the emerging progress of DESs by introducing applied fabrication approaches with advantages and limitations thereof, and by highlighting the pharmaceutical applications of DESs.

Abstract
A deep eutectic solvent (DES)-based extraction method is established to facilitate the determination of methomyl in grain via enzyme inhibition fluorescence. The environmentally-friendly DES was synthesized from proline and ethylene glycol and used as a green replacement for traditional extraction solvents that are generally toxic. The DES was added to grain samples and vortex extraction of methomyl, the supernatant was then collected for fluorescence detection. Biomass carbon quantum dots (CQDs) synthesized from millet were used as fluorescent probes. Acetylcholinesterase catalyzes the hydrolysis of acetylthiocholine iodide to thiocholine. The positively-charged thiocholine interacts electrostatically with the negatively-charged quantum dots resulting in the quenching of their fluorescent emission. The pesticide extract solution blocks the enzyme activity and thus recovers the fluorescent from the quantum dots. The fluorescence response was correlated with the amount of methomyl residue in the grain over the range 0.01 to 5 mg kg-1. The limit of detection was found to be 0.003 mg kg-1, and the limit of quantification 0.01 mg kg-1. Recoveries of 86.5% to 107.8% were obtained using real samples, including millet, rice, wheat, and barley, with a relative standard deviation of less than 3.8%. The method is efficient and convenient and has good application prospects for extracting and detecting pesticides in grain samples.

Abstract
Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is extensively used owing to the superior pharmacological effects. However, its maximum application potential has not been fully exploited due to the limitation of currently available extraction solvent and methods. In this study, an eco-friendly deep eutectic solvent (NADESs) based ultrasound-assisted extraction (DES-UAE) method was applied to prepare licorice extracts. The DES-UAE using choline chloride and lactic acid as solvent was optimized and modeled by using response surface methodology to maximize the extraction yields of glabridin (GLA) and isoliquiritigenin (ISL). The optimized extracts possessed higher contents of GLA and ISL than available extraction methods, and the enriched products showed superior pharmacological activities in vitro. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and molecular dynamic simulation analyses were performed to deeply investigate the interaction between solvent and targeted compounds. This study not only provides an eco-friendly method for high-efficient extraction of GLA and ISL from licorice but also illustrates the mechanism of the increased extraction efficacy, which may contribute to the application of licorice and deep insight into extraction mechanism using DES.

Abstract
With the increase in demand of fruit wine year by year, it is necessary to develop novel fruit wine with high functional activities. Prunus salicina Lindl. (named as Niuxin plum) is a remarkable material for brewing fruit wine owing to its suitable sugar-acid ratio, characteristic aroma and bioactive compounds. This study intends to modify the fermentation technology, identify and quantify nutritional compositions and volatile profiles, as well as bioactive substances in Niuxin plum wine, as well as evaluate the antioxidant and hypoglycemic activities in vitro of major bioactive components from Niuxin plum wine. According to single-factor and orthogonal tests, the optimal fermentation conditions of 13.1% vol Niuxin plum wine should be Saccharomyces cerevisiae Lalvin EC1118 at 0.1% and a fermentation temperature of 20°C for 7 days. A total of 17 amino acids, 9 mineral elements, 4 vitamins, and 55 aromatic components were detected in plum wine. Polysaccharides from Niuxin plum wine (named as NPWPs) served as the major bioactive components. The NPWP with a molecular weight over 1,000 kDa (NPWP-10) demonstrated extraordinary DPPH free radical scavenging capacity and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity among all NPWPs having different molecular weight. Moreover, the structural characterization of NPWP-10 was also analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra studies. NPWP-10 was composed of mannose, rhamnose, arabinose, galactose and galacturonic acid with molar ratios of 2.570:1.775:1.045:1.037:1. NPWP-10 contained α-configuration as the main component and β-configuration as the auxiliary component. This study highlights NPWP-10 is an importantly biological polysaccharide from Niuxin plum wine, as well as provides a scientific basis for developing the plum wine industry.
