Abstract
Microwave-assisted extraction conditions were optimized using response surface methodology to evaluate the effects of extraction parameters on the yield and carbohydrate content of Luffa aegyptiaca mucilage. The optimal extraction parameters were determined at 540 W for 2 min with a 1:20 (g/mL) ratio, yielding a maximum of 5.90 % (w/w) and comprising 63 % carbohydrate content, which includes glucose, galactose, maltose, mannose, and galacturonic acid, characterized by β (1 → 4) and β (1 → 6) glycosidic bonds. The nanomucilage exhibited a monomodal particle size distribution of 145.3 ± 4.60 nm, high thermal stability (-1363.08 J/g), oil and water retention capacity, emulsifying ability (93.06 ± 0.48 %), emulsifying stability (75.02 ± 0.96 %), solubility (95.36 ± 0.89 %), and foaming ability (93.06 ± 0.48 %). Mucilage demonstrated potential in vitro anti-oxidant activity (2.05 ± 0.10 %) against Caco-2 cells, anti-inflammatory activity during membrane stabilization (30.47 ± 0.42 % to 70.46 ± 0.31 %,) and protein denaturation (20.47 ± 0.42 % to 78.39 ± 0.40 %) assays and anticancer activity against human breast cancer cells (MCF-7), with growth inhibition of 100.5 ± 12.45 %. Hence, this evaluation of Luffa aegyptiaca nanomucilage highlights its potential as a multifunctional biomaterial with significant applications in the healthcare industry.

Abstract
The mucilage is an interesting compound found in cladodes of species of Opuntia (Cactaceae). The aim of this work was to extract the mucilages from Opuntia ficus-indica (OFI) and O. quimilo (OQ) cladodes and to examine their physicochemical characteristics, microstructure, and functional properties in solution. The mucilages exhibited high contents of carbohydrates, proteins, and minerals. Both mucilages presented a diverse monosaccharide composition, mainly constituted of galactose and arabinose. The FTIR spectra showed characteristic polysaccharide nature, whereas the diffractograms demonstrated an amorphous structure. The intrinsic viscosity of OFI mucilage was 3.08 dL/g, while that of OQ mucilage was 10.33 dL/g. Although the molecular weights of both mucilages are in the order of those of commercial gums, that of OQ was higher. This is consistent with the pseudoplastic behavior of OQ mucilage. However, OFI mucilage showed Newtonian behavior over the range of concentrations evaluated. This is fully consistent with that of semi-diluted solutions and in accordance with the lower molecular weight of this mucilage. The mucilages presented maximum solubility at 60 °C, although the mucilage of OFI was slightly more soluble than that of OQ. The chemical composition and functional properties of the mucilages can be affected by the extraction method and conditions.

Abstract
The accelerated ripening and senescence of fruits and vegetables is characterized by various biochemical changes that hinder the maintenance of their postharvest quality. In this context, developing edible films and coatings formulated with natural and biodegradable materials emerges as a sustainable strategy for preserving the quality parameters of these products in replacement of conventional petroleum-based packaging. Recently, plant-based polymers, including mucilage from different cactus species and/or their bioactive compounds, have been investigated to develop edible films and coatings. As the available literature indicates, the Opuntia genus stands out as the most used for mucilage extraction, with the cladode being the most exploited part of the plant. Conventional extraction methods are widely employed to obtain mucilages, which are applied to fruits and vegetables after being combined with plasticizing and cross-linking agents. In general, these films and coatings have proven effective in prolonging the shelf life and maintaining the nutritional, physical, and sensory quality of fruits and vegetables. Given their preservation potential, combining cactus mucilages with bioactive compounds, probiotics, and prebiotics represents an emerging trend in developing functional films and coatings. However, some limitations have been identified, such as the underutilization of different species and parts of the plant, the lack of standardization in extraction methods, and the absence of studies on the effects of the physicochemical properties of mucilages in the formulation and characteristics of films and coatings. Therefore, overcoming these limitations is essential for developing edible films and coatings with enhanced techno-functional properties and greater commercial viability.

Abstract
The objective was to investigate the physicochemical stability of stored cactus pear mucilage and assess the technological feasibility to produce polymeric films. Mucilage of cactus pear species Nopalea cochenillifera (L.) Salm-Dyck MIU and Opuntia stricta (Haw.) Haw-OEM was extracted and stored for 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 months in the absence of light at a temperature of 26.5 °C and relative humidity of 41.3%. At each storage time, polymeric films were produced using hydrated mucilage (4%, weight-w/volume-(v)), glycerol (60%, v/v), and calcium lactate (2%, w/v). Among the species, MIU stood out due to its higher water and oil retention, but it also presented higher levels of phenolic compounds, and more intense peaks in Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR) analysis. On the other hand, OEM is richer in carbohydrates, denser, and electrically conductive. The characteristics highlighted for each species are also observed in the principal component analysis (PCA). Both species are equally soluble in water, and more than 60% of their granules have a diameter of 250 mm. The resulting films of MIU exhibited increased resistance and permeability but were less soluble and transparent. Microscopically, greater homogeneity was observed, and the films were thicker, whitish, and thermally stable. Both species have the potential for producing polymeric films with various applications in the food industry, particularly as edible coatings.

Abstract
Adhering to a healthy diet has a protective effect on human health, including a decrease in inflammatory diseases due to consuming fiber. The purpose of this manuscript was to obtain and compare two extracts based on fiber (BF and IF-C), derived from two plants particularly present in the Mediterranean region: bergamot (Citrus bergamia) and prickly pear (Opuntia ficus-indica). The parts used by these plants have been the "pastazzo" for the bergamot and the cladodes for the prickly pear. In addition to in vitro evaluations, the antioxidant activity was also measured on human neurons under inflammatory conditions. Furthermore, the extracts of interest were examined for their effects on the cell cycle and the regulation of pro-apoptotic proteins, caspase 9 and 3, induced by LPS. The results indicated that both extracts had a protective effect against LPS-induced damage, with BF consistently exhibiting superior functionality compared to IF-C. Moreover, the extracts can reduce inflammation, which is a common process of disease. By exploring this avenue, studying the consumption of dietary fiber could enhance our understanding of its positive effects, but additional experiments are needed to confirm this.

Abstract
Nowadays, substituting petroleum-based plastics with biodegradable polymers made from polysaccharides loaded with various reinforcing materials has recently gained attention due to the impact of conventional plastics wastes. In this study, polysaccharidic mucilage from Ethiopian cactus (Opuntia Ficus Indica) was derived using microwave-assisted extraction technique to develop biodegradable polymers that were inexpensive, readily available, simple to make, and ecofriendly. The effect of microwave power 300-800 W, solid-liquid (cactus-sodium hydroxide solution) ratio 1:5-1:25, sodium hydroxide concentration 0.1-0.8 mol/L, and extraction time 2-10 min on mucilage extraction were studied and the maximum yield of mucilage was attained at optimized parameters of 506 W, 1:20, 0.606 mol/L, and 9.5 min, respectively. Biodegradable polymers made with mucilage alone have poor mechanical characteristics and are thermally unstable. Thus, to overcome the stated problems, glycerol as a plasticizer and acid-leached kaolin crosslinked with urea as a reinforcing material were used. Moreover, the effect of acid-leached kaolin and glycerol on the physico-chemical properties of the films was studied, and a maximum tensile strength of 6.74 MPa with 18.45 % elongation at break, thermally improved biodegradability of 26 %, were attained at 10 % acid-leached kaolin and 20 % glycerol crosslinking with 2 % urea. But the maximum degradability of 53.5 % was attained at 30 % glycerol content. The control and reinforced biodegradable films were characterized using TGA, FTIR, SEM, and XRD to determine the thermal, functional group, morphology, and crystallinity of the bioplastics, respectively. These biodegradable plastics may be used for packaging application.

Abstract
Opuntia silvestri mucilage obtained from dried stems was explored as an emulsifier to prepare double emulsions aiming to encapsulate Lactiplantibacillus plantarum CIDCA 83114. W1/O/W2 emulsions were prepared using a two-step emulsification method. The aqueous phase (W1) consisted of L. plantarum CIDCA 83114, and the oil phase (O) of sunflower oil. The second emulsion was prepared by mixing the internal W1/O emulsion with the W2 phase, consisting of 4 % polysaccharides, formulated with different mucilage:(citric)pectin ratios. Their stability was assessed after preparation (day 0) and during storage at 4 °C (28 days). Determinations included creaming index, color, particle size, viscosity, turbidity, and bacterial viability, along with exposure to simulated gastrointestinal conditions. Significant differences were evaluated by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Duncan's test (P < 0.05). After 28 days storage, bacterial viability in the W1/O/W2 emulsions was above 6 log CFU/mL for all the pectin:mucilage ratios. Emulsions containing mucilage and pectins showed lower creaming indices after 15 days, remaining stable until the end of the storage period. Formulations including 1:1 pectin:mucilage ratio exhibited the highest bacterial viability under simulated gastrointestinal conditions and were more homogeneous in terms of droplet size distributions at day 0, hinting at a synergistic effect between mucilage components (e.g., proteins, Ca2+) and pectin in stabilizing the emulsions. These results showed that Opuntia silvestri mucilage enhanced the stability of emulsions during refrigerated storage, highlighting its potential for encapsulating lactic acid bacteria. This presents an economical and natural alternative to traditional encapsulating materials.

Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Miller is a plant belonging to the Cactaceae family adapted to live in environments characterized by long periods of drought and arid or desert climates. This plant is characterized by an aerial part composed of structures transformed by branches, called "cladodes", which are essential to reduce excessive perspiration of water and appear covered with thorns. The composition of the cladodes includes water, polysaccharides, fiber, proteins, vitamins, fatty acids, sterols, polyphenols, and minerals. The main purposes of this scientific work are (a) to compare the insoluble fiber (IF) extracted from the cladodes of O. ficus-indica belonging to the same plant but collected in different seasonal periods (winter and summer) and develop new extraction protocols that are able to improve the yield obtained and (b) evaluate the antioxidant potential of the fiber and study possible variations as a result of the extraction protocol chosen. The first objective was achieved (1) by measuring the amount of IF extracted from cladodes harvested in winter and summer (CW and CS, respectively) and (2) by modifying three variables involved in the fiber extraction protocol. To achieve the second objective, the following experiments were carried out: (1) measurement of the antioxidant potential of IF in CW and CS; (2) measurement of cellular reactive oxygen species; (3) measurement of the activity of some antioxidant enzymes; and (4) comparison of the polyphenol content in CW and CS. In conclusion, the results obtained showed that the IF extraction process can be improved, achieving a uniform yield regardless of seasonality; the antioxidant effect may vary depending on the extraction protocol.

Abstract
Cactus pear cladodes, clones 'Miúda' (MIU) and 'Orelha de Elefante Mexicana' (OEM) were harvested at 6 am and 8 pm during the rainy-dry, dry and rainy seasons to evaluate the effect of type of clone and harvest seasons on the physicochemical and technological properties of mucilage as well as the optical, physicochemical, mechanical, thermal and microstructural characteristics of the films obtained. The mucilage of the OEM clone presented a higher content of phenolic compounds, compared to the Nopalea genus, regardless of the season and time of harvest. Furthermore, the dry period resulted in higher carbohydrate levels, regardless of the harvest time. The biopolymeric films produced from the OEM clone harvested in the rainy season and rainy-dry transition showed darker color, better mechanical properties, water barrier, compact microstructure and thermal stability when compared to the MIU clone. Furthermore, harvesting at 6 am provided improvements in the mechanical conditions, permeability and thermal stability of the films of both types of clones studied. These results showed strong environmental modulation, naturally incorporating important macromolecules such as carbohydrates and phenolic compounds, used in the industry in the production of nutraceutical foods, into the mucilage. Furthermore, harvesting cladodes at 6 am in the rainy and transitional (rainy-dry) periods provided better quality biopolymeric films and/or coatings.

Abstract
A thin plastic-like film separated from the epidermis of Cereus hildmannianus has excellent tensile strength, resistance to water and high antimicrobial activity and supports the growth of mouse fibroblast cells. Cactuses are one of the most under explored plant species with high potential for food, materials, pharmaceutical and other applications. Although studies have shown the ability of cactuses to be used for food, as a source for fibers, as reinforcement for composites and other applications, the role of individual layers and their properties has been studied to a limited extent. In this paper, a thin translucent layer was separated from the epidermis of C. hildmannianus and studied for its composition, structure and properties. The layer is composed of about 73% cellulose and 2% lignin and morphologically, shows surface with uneven and serrated edges. Films with length of up to 36 cm, strength of 6.8 MPa and elongation of 2.5% could be peeled from the cactus suggesting their suitability for food packaging and other applications. X-ray diffraction patterns and FTIR spectrums indicated that the films are similar to that of cellulose and major thermal degradation occurred above 280°C. Compared to standards, the cactus films showed about 41% and 44% inhibition against gram positive and gram negative bacteria and 67% inhibition of the common fungal strain (A. niger). Films showed high stability in water and to common chemicals. When used as substrates for mouse fibroblast cell growth, no cytotoxicity was observed and the cactus peel supported the attachment and proliferation of cells demonstrating potential to be used as a biomaterial for tissue engineering applications.

Abstract
Recently, mucilage extraction from plant sources has been remarkably explored due to its potential applications. Several underutilized fruits such as Aegle marmelos are the potential source of mucilage that can be utilized for agri-food-pharma applications. Therefore, in this study, we explored vital functional and antimicrobial properties of Aegle marmelos nanomucilage. Spray drying conditions such as inlet temperature, feed flow, and atomization speed were optimized to assess the influence on yield and moisture content using response surface methodology. In addition, during the optimized spray drying conditions, the maximum mucilage yield was 16.23 % (w/w). The particle size (178.4 ± 5.06 nm) at the nanoscale, polydispersity index (0.432), and zeta potential (-16.4 ± 1.14 mV) confirmed the stability of the nanomucilage. Moreover, the spray-dried nanomucilage powder exhibited high thermal stability (55.70 J) and excellent industrially important techno-functional properties with water-holding capacity (8.01 ± 0.04 g/g), oil-holding capacity (3.43 ± 0.7 g/g), emulsifying capacity (91.50 ± 0.78 %), emulsifying stability (92.65 ± 0.46 %), solubility (89.36 ± 1.69 %), and foaming capacity (16.13 ± 0.41 %). Moreover, the powder showed strong antibiofilm activity against food-pathogenic bacteria, including Escherichia coli (73.52 ± 1.14 %) and Staphylococcus aureus (79.57 ± 1.23 %), with minimum inhibitory concentrations of 3.125 mg/mL and 1.562 mg/mL respectively. Overall, based on the above findings the spray-dried powder of Aegle marmelos fruit nanomucilage could be utilized as a potential functional ingredient in various food products formulations.

Abstract
Opuntia ficus cladodes (OFC) are considered one of the wastes that result from opuntia cultivation, and their disposal by traditional methods results in many environmental problems. Therefore, this study was conducted with two aims. The first was the production of OFC gel, and the evaluation of its in vitro antioxidant (by two methods, DPPH and ABTS), anti-obesity, and anti-diabetic activities. The second was an investigation of the effects of different concentrations of this gel (0, 50, and 100%) as an edible coating on the quality of shrimp during 8 days of refrigerated storage. The results showed that this gel was characterised by a high content of ash (10.42%), total carbohydrates (75.17%), and total phenols (19.79 mg GAE/g). OFC gel contained six types of sugars: arabinose, xylose, galactose, rhamnose, glucose, and uronic acid, and the most abundant was xylose (36.72%). It is also clear from the results that the OFC gel had high antioxidant properties, which were higher against DPPH than ABTS at the same concentration. OFC gel showed a high inhibition activity against lipase, α-glycosidase, and α-amylase enzymes, and their IC50 values were 1.43 mg/mL, 0.78 mg/mL, and 0.57 mg/mL, respectively. The results also stated that shrimp coated with OFC gel had lower pH, drip loss, TVB-N, and TBA values through the days of refrigerated storage. Moreover, the shrimp coated with 100% OFC gel were better than those coated with 50% OFC gel. In conclusion, OFC gel showed high potency as active antioxidant, for its enzyme anti-activities, and as an edible coating for shrimp.

Abstract
The growing interest in a healthy lifestyle has contributed to disseminating perspectives on more sustainable natural resource management. This review describes promising aspects of using cacti in the food industry, addressing sustainable, nutritional, and functional aspects of the plant's production. Our study provides an overview of the potential of cacti for the food industry to encourage the sustainable cultivation of underutilized cactus species and their commercial exploitation. The commercial production of cacti has advantages over other agricultural practices by mitigating damage to ecosystems and encouraging migration to sustainable agriculture. The application of cactus ingredients in food development has been broad, whether in producing breads, jellies, gums, dyes, probiotics, and postbiotic and paraprobiotic foods. However, in the field of probiotic foods, future research should focus on technologies applied in processing and researching interactions between probiotics and raw materials to determine the functionality and bioactivity of products.

Abstract
Pereskia aculeata is a potential new crop species that has both food and medicinal (antinociceptive activity) properties. However, comprehensive genomic research on P. aculeata is still lacking, particularly concerning its organelle genome. In this study, P. aculeata was studied to sequence the mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) and to ascertain the assembly, informational content, and developmental expression of the mitogenome. The findings revealed that the mitogenome of P. aculeata is circular and measures 515,187 bp in length with a GC content of 44.05%. It contains 52 unique genes, including 33 protein-coding genes, 19 tRNA genes, and three rRNA genes. Additionally, the mitogenome analysis identified 165 SSRs, primarily consisting of tetra-nucleotides, and 421 pairs of dispersed repeats with lengths greater than or equal to 30, which were mainly forward repeats. Based on long reads and PCR experiments, we confirmed that two pairs of long-fragment repetitive elements were highly involved with the mitogenome recombination process. Furthermore, there were 38 homologous fragments detected between the mitogenome and chloroplast genome, and the longest fragment was 3962 bp. This is the first report on the mitogenome in the family Cactaceae. The decoding of the mitogenome of P. aculeata will provide important genetic materials for phylogenetic studies of Cactaceae and promote the utilization of species germplasm resources.

Abstract
The development of natural-based wound dressings is of great interest in the field of skin tissue engineering. Herein, different bioactive molecules such as gelatin (GEL), chitosan (CH) and mucilage (MU) were used to prepare a wound dressing. The physico-chemical and biological characterizations occurring after γ-irradiation were investigated. Results showed that Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy of un-irradiated GEL-CH-MU biomaterial showed two paramagnetic centers which correspond to g = 1.89 and g = 2.033. A generated new active center appeared at g = 2.003 at 25 kGy due to the interactions of gamma rays with the polymer chain creating signals at the absorbing functional groups. X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra preserved the semi-crystalline structures between a range of 2θ (5° and 45°). Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed that the initiation of cross linking phenomena. Moreover, γ-rays significantly increased antioxidant activity (9.1 ± 0.07%, p < 0.05) and exhibited a high anti-inflammatory activity (70%) at 25 kGy. Significant antibacterial activities in vitro liquid medium was observed. In addition GEL-CH-MU dressing exhibited high hemocompatibility. Conducted investigations state that such innovative dressing natural-based polymers for advanced wound care may be considered as useful for biomedical purposes.

Abstract
Background: Hydrocolloids are ingredients used to improve the technological properties of products; currently, there is a growing demand from the food industry and consumers to use natural ingredients and reduce the environmental impact. Methods: This work evaluated the effect of pH on hydrocolloid extraction from the pulp, seed, and peel of mango (Mangifera indica) var. hilaza and their chemical, physicochemical, techno-functional, and structural properties. Results: The main component of the hydrocolloid was the carbohydrates for pulp (22.59%) and peel (24.05%), and the protein for seed (21.48%) was corroborated by NIR spectra and associated with the technological and functional properties. The solubility increases with the temperature presenting values higher than 75% at 80 °C; the swelling index was higher than 30%, while the water holding capacity was higher in samples with higher carbohydrate content (110−121%). Moreover, a higher content of total phenolic compounds (21.61 ± 0.39−51.77 ± 2.48 mg GAE/g) and antioxidant activity (≥193.82 μMol Trolox/g) was obtained. The pH of extraction changes the color parameters and microstructural properties. Conclusions: Novel ingredients from mango pulp, seed, and peel at different pH levels have technological and functional properties that are potential use in the food industry as an alternative to the development of microstructural products.

Antioxidant and Antibacterial Activities of a Purified Polysaccharide Extracted from Ceratonia siliqua L. and Its Involvement in the Enhancement Performance of Whipped Cream. SEPARATIONS 2022. Abstract
The main objective discussed in this research was to determine the structural characteristics of carob kibble water-soluble polysaccharide (KWSP), extracted from Ceratonia siliqua L., and to assess its in vitro antioxidant activities, as well as its effect on whipped cream. The results obtained through 13C, 1H, and the hetero-nuclear single quantum coherence (HSQC) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis indicated that KWSP had the characteristic bands of polysaccharides. Thin layer chromatography (TLC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) suggested that KWSP is a hetero-polysaccharide composed of glucose and fructose, with an average molecular weight (Mw) amounting to 65 KDa. In addition, KWSP showed a good water holding capacity (WHC), a good oil holding capacity (OHC), and an emulsification stability, rated as 3.14 ± 0.05 g/g, 0.87 ± 0.02 g/g, and 71 ± 0.01%, respectively. The antioxidant activity of KWSP was investigated in vitro, demonstrating important DPPH and ABTS⋅+ radical scavenging activities and a good total antioxidant capacity. KWSP exhibited antibacterial activity against Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella enterica. On the other hand, the incorporation of KWSP in whipped cream was investigated, to enhance its antioxidant capacity and consequently to extend its expiration date. Moreover, KWSP reduces the formation of conjugated dienes and trienes in cream fat.

Abstract
The carmine cochineal (Dactylopius coccus Costa) has high economic value as it is a natural source of carminic acid, an organic chromophore used in a wide range of sectors including pharmaceutics, food, and cosmetics. High demand is fuelling the search for innovative production techniques in order to move away from dependence on the prickly pear, which carries a number of limitations. The aim of this study was to establish cochineal colonies and breed and mass-produce the insects using two laboratory-scale production systems. The first system (STC-01) comprised a prismatic acrylic box with three compartments; synthetic matrices were placed vertically inside the box to provide support and a source of nutrients for the cochineal, and the system was lit artificially during fixed daylight periods. The second system (STC-02) comprised an automated micro-tunnel allowing the insects to move towards the sunlight, containing synthetic matrices arranged horizontally. There was a significant difference in yield between the two systems in a cochineal total life cycle of 120 d (80-90 d harvest period in both cases), with STC-01 being superior and producing a maximum yield of 4.86 ± 0.68 g fresh weight per day per square metre compared with 3.20 ± 0.14 g fresh weight per day per square metre production yield in STC-02. We conclude that cochineal production under controlled artificial conditions is feasible and sustainable, removing the need for natural and biological support and overcoming the environmental limitations posed by traditional production methods.

Abstract
Plant mucilage is a renewable and cost-effective source of plant-based compounds that are biologically active, biodegradable, biocompatible, nontoxic, and environmentally friendly. Until recently, plant mucilage has been of interest mostly for technological purposes. This review examined both its traditional uses and potential modern applications in a new generation of health-promoting foods, as well as in cosmetics and biomaterials. We explored the nutritional, phytochemical, and pharmacological richness of plant mucilage, with a particular focus on its biological activity. We also highlighted areas where more research is needed in order to understand the full commercial potential of plant mucilage.
