Abstract
Cyclodextrin complexes have been widely used in pharmaceutical applications, but disadvantages such as the rapid clearance of cyclodextrins from the blood stream after in vivo administration or their replacement by other molecules in the biological medium with higher luminal affinity for cyclodextrins limit the application of cyclodextrins as drug carriers. Liposome-encapsulated hydrophobic drugs have low and unstable drug loading rates. Drug-in-CD-in-liposome (DCL), which encapsulate cyclodextrin inclusion complexes into liposomes, combine the advantages of both delivery systems, can effectively avoid the leakage and rapid release of lipophilic drugs in the lipid bilayer, and help to maintain the integrity of liposomes. This paper focuses on the preparation method, characterization and application of DCL, with a view to providing methods and references for the research and application of DCL technology.

Abstract
The acceptance of nonconventional solvents as viable substitutes for traditional organic solvents has been widely recognized in order to comply with food-safety and sustainability regulations. Cyclodextrins (CDs), derived from starch, are cyclic oligosaccharides with the ability to form inclusion complexes with a variety of functional substances as the result of their distinctive structure, which enables them to effectively encapsulate bioactive compounds, rendering them highly sought after for use in food applications. In the implementing plan to achieve carbon-neutral emissions by 2050, the novel generation of supramolecular deep eutectic solvents (SUPRADES) has garnered increased attention and interest. The approach of utilizing SUPRADES as emerging solvents was just beginning to be applied to food studies. This review summarizes a revision of the current advances and critical evaluation of cyclodextrin-based SUPRADES (CD-based SUPRADES) as promising solvents for the enhancement of the extraction efficiency, solubilization and stability of bioactive compounds, adsorption and separation of food components, packaging materials, and modification of biopolymers. To meet the sustainable processing needs of the food industry, the emerging categories of CD-based SUPRADES need to be further fabricated. Herein, our review will sort out the potential application of CD-based SUPRADES in the food industry, aiming to provide a better understanding of CD-based SUPRADES within the viewpoint of food science. Formulation intricacies and scalability issues in real functional foods using CD-based SUPRADES as media need more efforts.

Abstract
Quercetin, recognized for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties, faces limited biomedical application due to its low solubility. Cotton, a preferred wound dressing material over synthetic ones, lacks inherent antibacterial and wound-healing attributes and can benefit from quercetin features. This study explores the potential of overcoming these challenges through the inclusion complexation of quercetin with cyclodextrins (CDs) and the development of a nanofibrous coating on a cotton nonwoven textile. Hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) and hydroxypropyl-gamma-cyclodextrin (HP-γ-CD) formed inclusion complexes of quercetin, with chitosan added to enhance antibacterial properties. Phase solubility results showed that inclusion complexation can enhance quercetin solubility up to 20 times, with HP-γ-CD forming a more stable inclusion complexation compared with HP-β-CD. Electrospinning of the nanofibers from HP-β-CD/Quercetin and HP-γ-CD/Quercetin aqueous solutions without the use of a polymeric matrix yielded a uniform, smooth fiber morphology. The structural and thermal analyses of the HP-β-CD/Quercetin and HP-γ-CD/Quercetin nanofibers confirmed the presence of inclusion complexes between quercetin and each of the CDs (HP-β-CD and HP-γ-CD). Moreover, HP-β-CD/Quercetin and HP-γ-CD/Quercetin nanofibers showed a near-complete loading efficiency of quercetin and followed a fast-releasing profile of quercetin. Both HP-β-CD/Quercetin and HP-γ-CD/Quercetin nanofibers showed significantly higher antioxidant activity compared to pristine quercetin. The HP-β-CD/Quercetin and HP-γ-CD/Quercetin nanofibers also showed antibacterial activity, and with the addition of chitosan in the HP-γ-CD/Quercetin system, the Chitosan/HP-γ-CD/Quercetin nanofibers completely eliminated the investigated bacteria species. The nanofibers were nontoxic and well-tolerated by cells, and exploiting the quercetin and chitosan anti-inflammatory activities resulted in the downregulation of IL-6 and NO secretion in both immune as well as regenerative cells. Overall, CD inclusion complexation markedly enhances quercetin solubility, resulting in a biofunctional antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory wound dressing through a nanofibrous coating on cotton textiles.

Abstract
The diversity of cyclodextrins and their derivatives is increasing with continuous research. In addition to monomolecular cyclodextrins with different branched chains, cyclodextrin-based polymers have emerged. The aim of this review is to summarize these innovations, with a special focus on the study of applications of cyclodextrins and their derivatives in nano-delivery systems. The areas covered include nanospheres, nano-sponges, nanogels, cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks, liposomes, and emulsions, providing a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the design and development of nano-delivery systems.

Abstract
The limited application of garlic essential oil (GEO) is attributed to its pungent taste, poor water solubility and low bioavailability. Liposomes are nontoxic, biodegradable and biocompatible, and β-cyclodextrin can inhibit undesirable odors and improve the stability and bioavailability. Thus a promising dual-layer GEO β-cyclodextrin inclusion compound liposome (GEO-DCL) delivery system with both advantages was designed and prepared in this study. Experimental results indicated that the encapsulation efficiency of GEO-DCLs was 5% higher than that of GEO liposomes (GEO-CLs), reaching more than 88%. In vitro release experiment showed that the release rate of GEO in GEO-DCLs was 40% lower than that of GEO-CLs after incubation in gastric juice for 6-h, indicating that the stability of GEO-DCLs was better than GEO-CLs. Evaluation of the effects of GEO-DCLs on lowering blood lipid levels in hypercholesterolemia mice. GEO-DCLs could reduce the weight and fat deposition in hypercholesterolemia mice. Inhibiting the increase of TC, LDL-C, and decrease of HDL-C in mice. The degree of liver injury was decreased, the number of round lipid droplets in liver cytoplasm was reduced, and the growth of fat cells was inhibited. The lipid-lowering effects of GEO-DCLs were dose-dependent. GEO-DCL can improve the bioavailability of GEO and improve dyslipidemia. Based on GEO's efficacy in lowering blood lipids, this study developed a kind of GEO-DCL compound pomegranate juice beverage with good taste, miscibility and double effect of reducing blood lipids. This study lays a foundation for the application of GEO in the field of functional food.

Abstract
Since the discovery of polyphenolic resins 150 years ago, the study of polymeric compounds named calix[n]arene has continued to progress, and those skilled in the art perfectly know now how to modulate this phenolic ring. Consequently, calix[n]arenes are now used in a large range of applications and notably in therapeutic fields. In particular, the calix[4]arene exhibits multiple possibilities for regioselective polyfunctionalization on both of its rims and offers researchers the possibility of precisely tuning the geometry of their structures. Thus, in the crucial research of new antibacterial active ingredients, the design of calixarenes finds its place perfectly. This review provides an overview of the work carried out in this aim towards the development of intrinsically active prodrogues or metallic calixarene complexes. Out of all the work of the community, there are some excellent activities emerging that could potentially place these original structures in a very good position for the development of new active ingredients.

Abstract
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that is difficult to treat. Quercetin (QT) is a dietary flavonoid known for its anti-inflammatory effects and safe use in humans. However, the topical application of quercetin for psoriasis treatment presents a significant challenge due to its poor water solubility and low stability in semisolid preparations, where it tends to recrystallize. This work presents a novel liposome-in-gel formulation for the quercetin-based topical treatment of psoriasis. The quercetin-loading liposomes are stabilized by hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPCD), which interacts with phospholipids via hydrogen bonding to form a layer of an HPCD coating on the liposome interface, thus resulting in improved stability. Various analytical techniques, such as FTIR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and TEM, were used to characterize the molecular coordination patterns between cyclodextrin and liposomes. The results demonstrated that HPCD assisted the liposomes in interfacing with the matrix lipids and keratins of the stratum corneum, thereby enhancing skin permeability and promoting drug penetration and retention in the skin. The in vivo results showed that the topical QT HPCD-liposome-in-gel improved the treatment efficacy of psoriatic plaque compared to free QT. It alleviated the symptoms of skin thickening and downregulated proinflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α, IL-17A, and IL-1β. The results suggested that the HPCD-coordinated liposome-in-gel system could be a stable carrier for topical QT therapy with good potential in psoriasis treatment.

Abstract
This is the first study on the modeling of the controlled release of the estimated antioxidants (flavonoids or flavonolignans) from β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)/hydrophilic vegetable extract complexes and the modeling of transdermal pharmaceutical formulations based on these complexes using an overall estimation by the spectrophotometric method. The Korsmeyer-Peppas model was chosen for evaluating the release mechanisms. β-CD/chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L., Asteraceae) ethanolic extract and β-CD/milk thistle (Silybum marianum L., Asteraceae) ethanolic extract complexes were obtained by the co-crystallization method with good recovering yields of 55-76%, slightly lower than for β-CD/silibinin or silymarin complexes (~87%). According to differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Karl Fischer water titration (KFT), the thermal stability of complexes is similar to β-CD hydrate while the hydration water content is lower, revealing the formation of molecular inclusion complexes. In the Korsmeyer-Peppas model, β-CD/M. chamomilla flower extract complexes reveal Case II transport mechanisms, while the corresponding complexes with leaf extracts indicate non-Fickian diffusion for the controlled release of antioxidants in ethanol 60 and 96%. The same non-Fickian diffusion was revealed by β-CD/S. marianum extract and β-CD/silibinin complexes. On the contrary, almost all model transdermal pharmaceutical formulations based on β-CD/M. chamomilla extract complexes and all those based on β-CD/S. marianum extract complexes revealed non-Fickian diffusion for the antioxidant release. These results indicate that H-bonding is mainly involved in the diffusion of antioxidants into a β-CD based matrix, while the controlled release of antioxidants in model formulations is mainly due to hydrophobic interactions. Results obtained in this study can be further used for studying the particular antioxidants (namely rutin or silibinin, quantified, for example, by liquid chromatographic techniques) for their transdermal transport and biological effects in innovatively designed pharmaceutical formulations that can be obtained using "green" methods and materials.

Abstract
Nisin is a natural bacteriocin that exhibits good antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. It has good solubility, stability, and activity under acidic conditions, but it becomes less soluble, stable, and active when the solution pH exceeds 6.0, which severely restricted the industrial application range of nisin as antibacterial agent. In this study, we investigated the potential of complexing nisin with a cyclodextrin carboxylate, succinic acid-β-cyclodextrin (SACD), to overcome the disadvantages. Strong hydrogen bonding was shown between the nisin and SACD, promoting the formation of nisin-SACD complexes. These complexes exhibited good solubility under neutral and alkaline conditions, and good stability after being held at high pH values during processing with high-steam sterilization. Moreover, the nisin-SACD complexes displayed significantly improved antibacterial activity against model Gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus). This study shows that complexation can improve the efficacy of nisin under neutral and alkaline situations, which may greatly broaden its application range in food, medical, and other industries.

Abstract
While endocrine therapy is considered as an effective way to treat breast cancer, it still faces many challenges, such as drug resistance and individual discrepancy. Therefore, novel preventive and therapeutic modalities are still in great demand to decrease the incidence and mortality rate of breast cancer. Numerous studies suggested that G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER), a membrane estrogen receptor, is a potential target for breast cancer prevention and treatment. It was also shown that not only endogenous estrogens can activate GPERs, but many phytoestrogens can also function as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) to interact GPERs. In this review, we discussed the possible mechanisms of GPERs pathways and shed a light of developing novel phytoestrogens based dietary supplements against breast cancers.

Abstract
Hispolon, a phenolic pigment isolated from the mushroom species Phellinus linteus, has been investigated for anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer properties; however, low solubility and poor bioavailability have limited its potential clinical translation. In this study, the inclusion complex of hispolon with Sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin (SBEβCD) was characterized, and the Hispolon-SBEβCD Complex (HSC) was included within the sterically stabilized liposomes (SL) to further investigate its anticancer activity against melanoma cell lines. The HSC-trapped-Liposome (HSC-SL) formulation was investigated for its sustained drug delivery and enhanced cytotoxicity. The inclusion complex in the solid=state was confirmed by a Job’s plot analysis, molecular modeling, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The HSC-SL showed no appreciable deviation in size (<150 nm) and polydispersity index (<0.2) and improved drug encapsulation efficiency (>90%) as compared to control hispolon liposomes. Individually incorporated hispolon and SBEβCD in the liposomes (H-CD-SL) was not significant in loading the drug in the liposomes, compared to HSC-SL, as a substantial amount of free drug was separated during dialysis. The HSC-SL formulation showed a sustained release compared to hispolon liposomes (H-SLs) and Hispolon-SBEβCD liposomes (H-CD-SLs). The anticancer activity on melanoma cell lines (B16BL6) of HSC and HSC-SL was higher than in H-CD-SL and hispolon solution. These findings suggest that HSC inclusion in the HSC-SL liposomes stands out as a potential formulation approach for enhancing drug loading, encapsulation, and chemotherapeutic efficiency of hispolon and similar water insoluble drug molecules.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this study the potential of liposomes as a vitamin E (VE) and β-carotene (βC) delivery system was examined. The co-encapsulated liposomes of βC and VE (L-VE-βC) were prepared and characterized. Their antioxidant properties were evaluated by free radical scavenging activities of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), hydroxyl radical and lipid peroxidation assay. The in vitro sustained release behaviour was then investigated and discussed. RESULTS VE and βC were co-encapsulated in liposomes with high encapsulation efficiency, up to 92.49% and 86.16% for βC and VE, respectively. The antioxidant activities of L-VE-βC samples were significantly higher than that of single loaded liposome. Among different ratios of VE/βC, L-VE-βC at 5:3 exhibited the highest radical scavenging rates, with 66.80%, 56.58% and 34.39% for DPPH, ABTS and OH radical, respectively. L-VE-βC samples also had a good ability to inhibit lipid peroxidation, especially the sample with ratios of VE/βC at 5:3 and 3:1. In simulated gastrointestinal release, L-VE-βC exhibited an excellent sustained release behaviour in SGF with the accumulated rate at about 20%, while the release rate in SIF increased to over 80%, where they should be absorbed. The release kinetics analysis indicated that βC was released in the Higuchi model in stomach, and the Korsmeyr-Peppas model in intestine. CONCLUSION Compared to single loaded liposomes, the combined-loaded liposomes exhibited higher antioxidant activity and bioavailability, suggesting the potential applications in functional foods. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Due to the unstable chemical properties and poor water solubility of carotenoids, their processing adaptation and oral bioavailability are poor, limiting their application in hydrophilic food systems. Lipid-biomacromolecular compounds can be excellent carriers for carotenoid delivery by taking full advantage of the solubilization of lipids to non-polar nutrients and the water dispersion and gastrointestinal controlled release properties of biomacromolecules. This paper reviewed the research progress of lipid-biomacromolecular compounds as encapsulation and delivery carriers of carotenoids and summarized the material selection and preparation methods for biomacromolecular compounds. By considering the interaction between the two, this paper briefly discussed the effect of these compounds on carotenoid water solubility, stability, and bioavailability, emphasizing their delivery effect on carotenoids. Finally, various challenges and future trends of lipid-biomacromolecular compounds as carotenoid delivery carriers were discussed, providing new insight into efficient loading and delivery of carotenoids.

Abstract
Cigarette smoking has been responsible for causing many life-threatening diseases such as pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases as well as lung cancer. One of the prominent health implications of cigarette smoking is the oxidative damage of cellular constituents, including proteins, lipids, and DNA. The oxidative damage is caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS, oxidants) present in the aqueous extract of cigarette smoke (CS). In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the potential health benefits of dietary polyphenols as natural antioxidant molecules. Epidemiological studies strongly suggest that long-term consumption of diets (fruits, vegetables, tea, and coffee) rich in polyphenols offer protective effects against the development of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, osteoporosis, and neurodegenerative diseases. For instance, green tea has chemopreventive effects against CI-induced lung cancer. Tea might prevent CS-induced oxidative damages in diseases because tea polyphenols, such as catechin, EGCG, etc., have strong antioxidant properties. Moreover, apple polyphenols, including catechin and quercetin, provide protection against CS-induced acute lung injury such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In CS-induced health problems, the antioxidant action is often accompanied by the anti-inflammatory effect of polyphenols. In this narrative review, the CS-induced oxidative damages and the associated health implications/pathological conditions (or diseases) and the role of diets rich in polyphenols and/or dietary polyphenolic compounds against various serious/chronic conditions of human health have been delineated.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Nerolidol is a natural sesquiterpene alcohol with promising but limited application in food and pharmaceutical fields due to several factors including low photostability and low aqueous solubility. Recently, several carriers loading nerolidol were prepared and tested in fresh orange juice. Lipid vesicles loading nerolidol did not exhibit satisfactory organoleptic properties in this beverage. Hence, DMPC/DHPC bicelles were prepared as a new phospholipid-based carrier for nerolidol at different molar ratios. The bicelle suspensions were characterized in terms of homogeneity, particles size, and morphology. The optimal formulation (phospholipid:nerolidol molar ratio 100:1) was selected based on transparent appearance, homogeneity, and particle size (~ 45 nm). Besides, it showed a high encapsulation efficiency of nerolidol and a high incorporation rate of phospholipids. Transmission electron microscopy analysis demonstrated the formation of bicelles. The bicelles membrane fluidity was assessed by 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene fluorescence anisotropy and differential scanning calorimetry analysis. The membrane fluidity of bicelles appeared to increase in the presence of nerolidol in a concentration dependent manner. To our knowledge this is the first study dealing with the encapsulation of an essential oil component in bicelles. GRAPHIC ABSTRACT

Abstract
Nutraceuticals and food industries are opening to a tremendously upcoming technology in the field of "Nano science". A new prospect has been defined by nanotechnology by conferring modified properties of nanomaterials and its application in the development of nanoformulations, nutritional supplements and food industry. Nanomaterials reveal exclusive properties because of their small size and high surface/volume ratio; thus, they have a complete application in nutraceuticals and food sector. In the existent review article, we obligate to present a comprehensive outline of the application of nanomaterials in development of advanced nano-based nutraceuticals with enhanced bioavailability, solubility, improved encapsulation efficiency, increased stability, sustained and targeted drug delivery, protection against degradation and microbial contamination and with improved pharmacological activity. It also highlights the importance of nanomaterials as nanosensors/nano-bio sensors for encapsulating peptides, antibodies, enzymes, etc. and in the food packaging industry and its future application. Thus, the review aims to focus on the benefits and new dimensions provided by nanomaterials and nanotechnology in health sectors by improving treatment strategies and quality of life.

Abstract
Artemisinin (Art) is a natural sesquiterpene lactone that is claimed to exhibit various bioactivities. The poor solubility of Art in both water and oil hinders its application in formulations intended for oral administration. In this study, we investigated the potential of forming a host-guest complex between Art and succinic acid modified cyclodextrin (SACD) to improve its solubility characteristics. Art-SACD inclusion complexes (2:1 M ratio) were successfully formed in water, which was attributed to the relatively large cavity size of SACD, as well as the intermolecular interactions between the Art and succinic acid branches in the cavity. The thermal stability of the Art was retained after incorporation into the Art-SACD complexes, which may be useful for applications such as pasteurization or cooking. The encapsulated Art showed antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Such encapsulation technology allows Art to be introduced into oral delivery systems in a bioactive form.

Abstract
Curcumin is commonly used as a nutraceutical in functional food and beverage formulations because of various biological activities. Typically, curcumin is encapsulated in edible nanoparticles or microparticles to improve its water-dispersibility, chemical stability, and bioavailability. In this study, a succinic acid-modified cyclodextrin (SACD) was fabricated and applied as a carrier for curcumin. Curcumin-loaded SACD (Cur-SACD) with a molar ratio of 1:1 and an encapsulation efficiency > 80% was formed spontaneously basing on hydrogen bonding between the aromatic ring of the curcumin and the hydrophobic cavity of the SACD. Cur-SACD exhibited excellent stability against long-time storage, UV-irradiation, and pasteurization, as well as against physiological conditions including body temperature, physiological salt concentrations, stomach and intestinal pH. This study suggests that Cur-SACD systems may be suitable for increasing the water-dispersibility, stability, and bioavailability of hydrophobic compounds intended for oral administration, such as those used in the food, supplement, and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
The essential oil component α-pinene has multiple biological activities. However, its application is limited owing to its volatility, low aqueous solubility, and chemical instability. For the aim of improving its physicochemical properties, α-pinene was encapsulated in conventional liposomes (CLs) and drug-in-cyclodextrin-in-liposomes (DCLs). Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin/α-pinene (HP-β-CD/α-pinene) inclusion complexes were prepared in aqueous solution, and the optimal solubilization of α-pinene occurred at HP-β-CD:α-pinene molar ratio of 7.5:1. The ethanol-injection method was applied to produce different formulations using saturated (Phospholipon 90H) or unsaturated (Lipoid S100) phospholipids in combination with cholesterol. The size, the phospholipid and cholesterol incorporation rates, the encapsulation efficiency (EE), and the loading rate (LR) of α-pinene were determined, and the storage stability of liposomes was assessed. The results showed that α-pinene was efficiently entrapped in CLs and DCLs with high EE values. Moreover, Lipoid S100 CLs displayed the highest LR (22.9 ± 2.2%) of α-pinene compared to the other formulations. Both carrier systems HP-β-CD/α-pinene inclusion complex and Lipoid S100 CLs presented a gradual release of α-pinene. Furthermore, the DPPH radical scavenging activity of α-pinene was maintained upon encapsulation in Lipoid S100 CLs. Finally, it was found that all formulations were stable after three months of storage at 4 °C.

Abstract
Many phytochemicals suffer from poor water dispersity and storage stability, which restrict their application within aqueous-based commercial products. β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) is a water-dispersible molecule with a hydrophobic core that can encapsulate and protect non-polar substances. The functional attributes of β-CD can be further enhanced by chemical modification. In this study, a simple and effective dry-heating process was applied to fabricate succinic acid (SA)-modified β-CD (SACD) through esterification. SACD showed better encapsulation property than non-modified β-CD to guest molecules such as methyl orange (up to 1.41-folds of β-CD) and curcumin (with an encapsulation efficiency of up to 10 mg/g). Meanwhile, higher water solubility (up to 469.30 g per 100 g of H2O) was achieved for SACD, indicating that a high dose of SACD could be applied in an aqueous food matrix. Such a simple strategy exhibiting low cytotoxicity shows great potential incorporating bioactive compounds into functional foods.

Abstract
Nutraceuticals possess several health benefits and functions; however, most nutraceuticals are prone to degradation in the gastrointestinal environment and have poor bioavailability. Application of a novel carrier system is of increasing importance to overcome obstacles and provide efficient applicability. Lipid-based nanocarriers provide a large surface-to-mass ratio, enhanced intestinal absorption by solubilization in the intestinal milieu, intestinal lymphatic transport, and altering enterocyte-based transport. A critical overview of the current limitation, preparation, and application of lipid-based nanocarriers (liposomes and niosomes) and lipid nanoparticles (SLNs and NLCs) is discussed. Physical and gastrointestinal stability and bioavailability of nanoencapsulated nutraceuticals are considered as well.

Abstract
The increased research activity aiming at improved delivery of pharmaceutical molecules indicates the expansion of the field. An efficient therapeutic delivery approach is based on the optimal choice of drug-carrying vehicle, successful targeting, and payload release enabling the site-specific accumulation of the therapeutic molecules. However, designing the formulation endowed with the targeting properties in vitro does not guarantee its selective delivery in vivo. The various biological barriers that the carrier encounters upon intravascular administration should be adequately addressed in its overall design to reduce the off-target effects and unwanted toxicity in vivo and thereby enhance the therapeutic efficacy of the payload. Here, we discuss the main parameters of remote-controlled drug delivery systems: (i) key principles of the carrier selection; (ii) the most significant physiological barriers and limitations associated with the drug delivery; (iii) major concepts for its targeting and cargo release stimulation by external stimuli in vivo. The clinical translation for drug delivery systems is also described along with the main challenges, key parameters, and examples of successfully translated drug delivery platforms. The essential steps on the way from drug delivery system design to clinical trials are summarized, arranged, and discussed.

Abstract
Encapsulation of cargoes in nanocontainers is widely used in different fields to solve the problems of their solubility, homogeneity, stability, protection from unwanted chemical and biological destructive effects, and functional activity improvement. This approach is of special importance in biomedicine, since this makes it possible to reduce the limitations of drug delivery related to the toxicity and side effects of therapeutics, their low bioavailability and biocompatibility. This review highlights current progress in the use of lipid systems to deliver active substances to the human body. Various lipid compositions modified with amphiphilic open-chain and macrocyclic compounds, peptide molecules and alternative target ligands are discussed. Liposome modification also evolves by creating new hybrid structures consisting of organic and inorganic parts. Such nanohybrid platforms include cerasomes, which are considered as alternative nanocarriers allowing to reduce inherent limitations of lipid nanoparticles. Compositions based on mesoporous silica are beginning to acquire no less relevance due to their unique features, such as advanced porous properties, well-proven drug delivery efficiency and their versatility for creating highly efficient nanomaterials. The types of silica nanoparticles, their efficacy in biomedical applications and hybrid inorganic-polymer platforms are the subject of discussion in this review, with current challenges emphasized.

Abstract
Nanoliposomes and crude liposomes loaded with egg white peptide-calcium complex (EWP-Ca) were fabricated by thin-film dispersion with or without dynamic high-pressure microfluidization. Their physiochemical properties, in vitro stability, and calcium release profiles were investigated in this study. Results showed that the EWP-Ca-loaded nanoliposomes exhibited spherical structures with a lower particle size and polydispersity index as well as a higher thermal stability as compared to the corresponding crude liposomes. Further investigations revealed that EWP-Ca was embedded into the liposomes mainly through hydrogen bonding and present in an amorphous form within the liposomes. Additionally, the EWP-Ca-loaded nanoliposomes effectively slowed the release of calcium in gastric digestion, allowing more soluble calcium to enter the intestinal tract; in the subsequent intestinal digestion, the EWP-Ca-loaded nanoliposomes were more electrically and physically stable than the crude liposomes. Therefore, the EWP-Ca-loaded nanoliposomes could be used as a favorable dietary calcium delivery system to promote calcium bioavailability. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Nanoliposomes were fabricated in this study to encapsulate the egg white peptide-calcium complex (EWP-Ca) for calcium delivery. The EWP-Ca-loaded nanoliposomes effectively slowed the release of calcium in gastric digestion, allowing more soluble calcium to enter the intestinal tract, and were more electrically and physically stable in the subsequent intestinal digestion. Therefore, the EWP-Ca-loaded nanoliposomes may be incorporated in calcium-fortified food to enhance calcium delivery for maintaining bone health.

Abstract
Encapsulation in liposomes has been an efficient strategy to improve the stability of sensitive bioactive compounds such as essential oils (EOs). However, the stability of liposomal formulations remains a key parameter controlling the delivery of encapsulated ingredients. Cholesterol (Chol) modulates the membrane properties conferring stability to the lipid bilayer. Thus, the Chol content in the liposome formulations encapsulating EO components should be carefully chosen. In this work, various liposome formulations differing by Chol content (DPPC:Chol 100:10; 100:25; 100:50; 100:75; 100:100) were exposed to a series of 22 EO components at DPPC/EO 100/25. The formulations were characterized for their final composition and their permeability to the hydrophilic fluorophore, sulforhodamine B (SRB), was monitored. Results showed that the Chol content experimentally determined for the various formulations (above 10% Chol) was below the theoretical weighed Chol. Among the tested components, 13 molecules displayed a significant permeabilizing effect on 10% Chol membranes. Most of these possess a hydroxyl group. The EO induced permeability was dependent on the Chol content which affects the membrane phase: their effect was reduced upon increasing Chol content keeping five EOs components effective at 40% Chol. The EO's effect was also linked to the hydrophobicity of the molecule. Hence, the DPPC:Chol ratio of the formulation is chosen considering the structure of the compound, its hydrophobicity and its effect on the permeability at different Chol content: a formulation comprising 40% Chol is suggested for highly hydrophobic molecules whereas a formulation with higher Chol content could be selected for less hydrophobic compounds.

Abstract
Quercetin is a flavonoid present in a wide variety of plant resources. Over the years, extensive efforts have been devoted to examining the potential biological effects of quercetin and to manipulating the chemical and physical properties of the flavonoid. However, limited studies have reviewed the opportunities and challenges of using quercetin in the development of functional foods. To address this necessity, in this review; we foremost present an overview of the chemical properties and stability of quercetin in food products followed by a detailed discussion of various strategies that enhance its oral bioavailability. We further highlight the areas to be practically considered during development of quercetin-based functional foods. By revisiting the current status of applied research on quercetin, it is anticipated that useful insights enabling research on quercetin can be potentially translated into practical applications in food product development.

Abstract
Conventional liposomes still face many challenges associated with the poor physical and chemical stability, considerable loss of encapsulated cargo, lack of stimulus responsiveness, and rapid elimination from blood circulation. Integration of versatile functional biopolymers has emerged as an attractive strategy to overcome the limitation of usage of liposomes. This review comprehensively summarizes the most recent studies (2015-2020) and their challenges aiming at the exploration of biopolymer-liposome hybrid systems, including surface-modified liposomes, biopolymer-incorporated liposomes, guest-in-cyclodextrin-in-liposome, liposome-in-hydrogel, liposome-in-film, and liposome-in-nanofiber. The physicochemical principles and key technical information underlying the combined strategies for the fabrication of polymeric liposomes, the advantages and limitations of each of the systems, and the stabilization mechanisms are discussed through various case studies. Special emphasis is directed toward the synergistic efficiencies of biopolymers and phospholipid bilayers on encapsulation, protection, and controlled delivery of bioactives (e.g., vitamins, carotenoids, phenolics, peptides, and other health-related compounds) for the biomedical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and functional food applications. The major challenges, opportunities, and possible further developments for future studies are also highlighted.

Abstract
Quercetin (3,3',4',5,7-pentahydroxyl-flavone) is a natural flavonoid with many valuable biological effects, but its solubility in water is low, posing major limitations in applications. Quercetin encapsulation in liposomes increases its bioavailability; the drug effect on liposome elastic properties is required for formulation development. Here, we quantify the effect of quercetin molecules on the rigidity of lipoid E80 liposomes using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. AFM images show no effect of quercetin molecules on liposomes morphology and structure. However, AFM force curves suggest that quercetin softens lipid membranes; the Young modulus measured for liposomes encapsulating quercetin is smaller than that determined for blank liposomes. We then used MD simulations to interpret the effect of quercetin on membrane rigidity in terms of molecular interactions. The decrease in membrane rigidity was confirmed by the simulations, which also revealed that quercetin affects structural and dynamic properties: membrane thickness is decreased, acyl chains disorder is increased, and diffusion coefficients of lipid molecules are also increased. Such changes appear to be related to the preferential localization of quercetin within the membrane, near the interface between the hydrophobic core and polar head groups of the lipids.

Abstract
We review recent applications of atomic force microscopy (AFM) to characterize microstructural and textural properties of food materials. Based on interaction between probe and sample, AFM can image in three dimensions with nanoscale resolution especially in the vertical orientation. When the scanning probe is used as an indenter, mechanical features such as stiffness and elasticity can be analyzed. The linkage between structure and texture can thus be elucidated, providing the basis for many further future applications of AFM. Microstructure of simple systems such as polysaccharides, proteins, or lipids separately, as characterized by AFM, is discussed. Interaction of component mixtures gives rise to novel properties in complex food systems due to development of structure. AFM has been used to explore the morphological characteristics of such complexes and to investigate the effect of such characteristics on properties. Based on insights from such investigations, development of food products and manufacturing can be facilitated. Mechanical analysis is often carried out to evaluate the suitability of natural or artificial materials in food formulations. The textural properties of cellular tissues, food colloids, and biodegradable films can all be explored at nanometer scale, leading to the potential to connect texture to this fine structural level. More profound understanding of natural food materials will enable new classes of fabricated food products to be developed.

Abstract
Membrane elastic properties play a major role in membrane remodeling events, such as vesicle fusion and fission. They are also crucial in drug delivery by liposomes. Different experimental techniques are available to measure elastic properties. Among them, atomic force microscopy (AFM) presents the unique advantage of being directly applicable to nano-sized liposomes. Unfortunately, different AFM measures reported in the literature show little agreement among each other and are difficult to compare with measures of bending modulus obtained by other experimental techniques or by molecular simulations. In this work we determine the bending rigidity of Egg PC liposomes in terms of Young modulus via AFM measurements, using two different tip shapes and different cantilever force constants. We interpret the measures using the Hertz and Shell models, and observe a clear dependency of the Young modulus values on the tip properties and on the interpretative theory. The effect of the AFM tip shape is less important than the effect of the cantilever force constant, and the mathematical model has a major effect on the interpretation of the data. The Shell theory provides the closest agreement between AFM data and other experimental data for the membrane bending modulus. Finally, we compare the results to calculations of bending modulus from molecular dynamics simulations of membrane buckles. Simulations provide values of bending modulus consistent with literature data, but the agreement with AFM experiments is reasonable only for some specific experimental conditions.

Abstract
Nutraceuticals are defined as foods or their extracts that have a demonstrably positive effect on human health. According to the decision of the European Food Safety Authority, this positive effect, the so-called health claim, must be clearly demonstrated best by performed tests. Nutraceuticals include dietary supplements and functional foods. These special foods thus affect human health and can positively affect the immune system and strengthen it even in these turbulent times, when the human population is exposed to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of these special foods are supplemented with nanoparticles of active substances or processed into nanoformulations. The benefits of nanoparticles in this case include enhanced bioavailability, controlled release, and increased stability. Lipid-based delivery systems and the encapsulation of nutraceuticals are mainly used for the enrichment of food products with these health-promoting compounds. This contribution summarizes the current state of the research and development of effective nanonutraceuticals influencing the body's immune responses, such as vitamins (C, D, E, B12, folic acid), minerals (Zn, Fe, Se), antioxidants (carotenoids, coenzyme Q10, polyphenols, curcumin), omega-3 fatty acids, and probiotics.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to substitute part of soybean phospholipid (SPC) with hydrogenated soybean phospholipid (HSPC) in curcumin-loaded liposomes (Cur-LP), in order to further enhance stability and release performances of curcumin. When the SPC/HSPC mass ratio changed from 10:0 to 5:5, vesicle size, encapsulation efficiency and alkali resistance of curcumin increased, although a small decrease in centrifugal stability was observed. Salt stability became worse as more HSPC was used (3:7 and 0:10). Owing storage at 4 °C and 25 °C, Cur-LP at a SPC/HSPC mass ratio of 5:5 performed well considering vesicle size, lipid oxidation and curcumin retention. These vesicles displayed also the best sustained-release performance in simulated digestion, attributed to the tighter lipid packing in membranes as indicated by fluorescence probes, DSC and FTIR. This study can guide the development of a Cur-LP product with improved shelf-life stability by using HSPC.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to improve the physicochemical stability of neohesperidin (NH) using nanoliposomal encapsulation in association with surface decoration strategy employing chitosan (CH) and pectin (P). Different nanoliposomal systems, i.e. NH-loaded nanoliposome (NH-NL), CH-coated NH-NL (CH-NH-NL), and P-coated CH-NH-NL (P-CH-NH-NL) were characterized through DLS, HPLC, TEM, and FTIR. The results confirmed good encapsulation efficiency (>90%) and successful layer formation with nano-sized and spherical carrier. Both CH-NL and P-CH-NL exhibited better physicochemical stability than NL under storage, thermal, pH, ionic, UV, oxidative, and serum conditions. In vitro mucin adsorption study revealed that CH-NL (60%) was more effective in mucoadhesion followed by P-CH-NL (46%) and NL (41%). Furthermore, P-CH-NL showed better performance in NH retention under different food simulants compared to CH-NH-NL and NH-NL, in which the release was mainly governed by the diffusion process. Thus, the P-CH conjugated nanoliposome could be a promising nano-carrier for neohesperidin.
