Abstract
Depression is a multifaceted condition with diverse underlying causes. Several contributing and inter-related factors such as genetic, nutritional, neurological, physiological, gut-brain-axis, metabolic and psychological stress factors play a role in the pathophysiology of depression. This review aims to highlight the role that nutritional factors play in the aetiology of depression. Secondly, we discuss the biomedical and functional pathology tests which measure these factors, and the current evidence supporting their use. Lastly, we make recommendations on how practitioners can incorporate the latest evidence-based research findings into clinical practice. This review highlights that diet and nutrition greatly affect the pathophysiology of depression. Nutrients influence gene expression, with folate and vitamin B12 playing vital roles in methylation reactions and homocysteine regulation. Nutrients are also involved in the tryptophan/kynurenine pathway and the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Additionally, diet influences the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) response and the composition and diversity of the gut microbiome, both of which have been implicated in depression. A comprehensive dietary assessment, combined with appropriate evaluation of biochemistry and blood pathology, may help uncover contributing factors to depressive symptoms. By employing such an approach, a more targeted and personalised treatment strategy can be devised, ultimately leading to improved patient outcomes.

Abstract
The anthropogenic environment and diet are sources of chemical elements, both essential and toxic. Many of them play a key role in the proper functioning of the brain by controlling oxidative metabolism, neurotransmission and the production of neurotransmitters. Disturbances in element homeostasis are associated with the development of depression and many neurodegenerative diseases. The study examined the content of several elements in liver and brain samples taken from autopsies of residents of south-eastern Poland (n = 40). In order to determine the differences in the elemental composition of tissues collected from suicide victims compared to the control group who died from another cause, the Mann-Whitney U test was performed. There was a significant difference in the correlation patterns between the two groups for both brain (χ² = 1490.19, df = 1378, p < 7e-122, z = 3.72) and liver χ² = 2998.7, df = 1378, p < 0.018, z = 126.71). Two-way non-parametric Spearman rank correlation matrices showed different numbers and strengths of correlations for most brain regions in the compared groups, especially for the head of the caudate nucleus (Latin: caput nuclei caudati), superior longitudinal fasciculus (Latin: fasciculus longitudinalis superior cerebri), and hippocampus (Latin: hippocampus). Differences between groups reached statistical significance in the case of higher lanthanide content in the liver of suicides and lower Ca content in the basal ganglia (head of the caudate nucleus, nucleus accumbens septum), dorsal thalamus and insula. Brain samples from different regions of suicide victims were characterized by higher levels of, among others: Ag, P, Fe and Cu. Our findings suggest clear differences in trace metal content and inter-correlations in the brain and liver tissues of suicide victims compared to controls.

Abstract
As global life expectancy increases, research reveals a critical challenge in aging: the progressive deterioration of immune function, termed immunosenescence. This age-related immune decline is characterized by a complex dysregulation of immune responses, which leaves older adults increasingly vulnerable to infections, chronic inflammatory states, and various degenerative diseases. Without intervention, immunosenescence significantly contributes to morbidity and mortality among the elderly, intensifying healthcare burdens and diminishing quality of life on both individual and societal levels. This review explores the essential role of zinc, a trace element critical for immune health, in mitigating the impact of immunosenescence and slowing the cascade of immunological dysfunctions associated with aging. By modulating the activity of key immune cells and pathways, zinc supplementation emerges as a promising approach to strengthen immunity, reduce oxidative stress, and counteract "inflammaging," a state of chronic, low-grade inflammation that accelerates tissue damage and drives disease progression. Zinc's involvement in cellular defense and repair mechanisms across the immune system highlights its ability to enhance immune cell functionality, resilience, and adaptability, strengthening the body's resistance to infection and its ability to manage stressors that contribute to diseases of aging. Indeed, zinc has demonstrated potential to improve immune responses, decrease inflammation, and mitigate the risk of age-related conditions including diabetes, depression, cardiovascular disease, and vision loss. Given the prevalent barriers to adequate zinc intake among older adults, including dietary limitations, decreased absorption, and interactions with medications, this review underscores the urgent need to address zinc deficiency in aging populations. Recent findings on zinc's cellular and molecular effects on immune health present zinc supplementation as a practical, accessible intervention for supporting healthier aging and improving quality of life. By integrating zinc into targeted strategies, public health efforts may not only sustain immunity in the elderly but also extend healthy longevity, reduce healthcare costs, and potentially mitigate the incidence and impact of chronic diseases that strain healthcare systems worldwide.

Abstract
The Mediterranean diet is an anti-inflammatory diet now recognized for prevention and intervention against cardiometabolic disorders, although emerging literature also shows its benefits for mental health. This paper surveys literature pertinent to the Mediterranean diet with respect to schizophrenia, bipolar and unipolar depression and cognition. The National Library of Medicine database of literature was searched for publications relating to our topic through June 2024. Our results highlight the Mediterranean diet's potential role in mediating inflammation, potentially through the gut-brain axis, and its neuroprotective role against cognitive decline. Moreover, individual components of the Mediterranean diet are potentially therapeutic as well as protective, particularly fruits, vegetables, fatty fish, and whole grains. These dietary components reduce systemic inflammation, modulate gut microbiota and influence critical pathways such as moderating oxidative stress. Overall, this survey of recent literature highlights the potential of the Mediterranean diet to promote mental health and reduce the risk or severity of psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. The analysis underscores broader implications for the Mediterranean diet in advancing mental health outcomes and emphasizes the need for further studies and increased public education to encourage healthier eating habits and dietary interventions.

Abstract
Background: This study aims to explore the relationship between birth interval and prevalence of depression among postmenopausal women with two deliveries in the United States. Methods: Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were used, which spanned the years 2005-2018 and is publicly accessible. We utilized weighted multivariable logistic regression analysis, restricted cubic splines (RCS), and subgroup analysis to examine the relationship between the prevalence of depression in postmenopausal women with only two deliveries and the age at first birth (AFB), age at last birth (ALB), and birth interval (the difference between ALB and AFB). Results: A total of 2375 postmenopausal women with only two deliveries were included in the study, and 271 (11.4%) had depression. RCS models showed that AFB and ALB were U-shaped curves associated with the prevalence of depression. Additionally, the birth interval was roughly L-shaped curve correlated with the risk of depression. Conclusions: Both early and late childbearing, as well as short birth intervals, may contribute to mental health challenges in this demographic. These findings suggest that women with both early and late childbearing, as well as those with short birth intervals, may face a higher risk of depression during their postmenopausal years. This underscores the importance of targeted mental health screening and support for these groups.

Abstract
Exposure to metals has been previously associated with depressive symptoms, but few studies have considered potential effects of metal mixtures. In addition, few previous studies have been conducted among Black women, who are disproportionately at risk for exposure to some metals and greater depression incidence and severity. We analyzed data from the Study of Environment, Lifestyle, and Fibroids (SELF), a prospective cohort study of reproductive-aged Black women from Detroit, to examine associations between a mixture of metals, metalloids, and trace elements ("metals") and depressive symptoms (n = 1450). SELF participants self-identified as Black or African American and were 23-34 years of age at enrollment. We collected covariate information on structured questionnaires and whole blood samples at baseline. We quantified 17 metals in whole blood using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer triple quadruple or Direct Mercury Analyzer-80. Participants reported depressive symptoms on the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) at the 20-month follow-up visit, where higher CES-D scores reflected greater depressive symptoms. We used quantile-based g-computation to estimate the cumulative association of the metal mixture with CES-D scores, adjusting for age, household income, educational attainment, body mass index, smoking status, alcohol intake, and parity. We estimated beta coefficients (with 95 % confidence intervals [CI]) as the percent difference in CES-D scores per quartile increase in all metals. A one-quartile increase in the metal mixture was associated with 14.8 % lower (95 % CI=-26.7 %, -1.1 %) CES-D scores, reflecting lower depressive symptoms. The mixture association was driven by nickel, copper, cesium, molybdenum, and lead. Other neurotoxic metals (cadmium, arsenic, mercury, chromium) were associated with greater depressive symptoms. Findings from this study suggest that exposure to a mixture of metals may affect depressive symptoms in Black women, with individual metals acting in opposing directions.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element of the utmost importance to human health. Its deficiency induces various disorders. Se species can be absorbed by organisms and metabolized to hydrogen selenide for the biosynthesis of selenoproteins, selenonucleic acids, or selenosugars. Se in mammals mainly acts as selenoproteins to exert their biological functions. The brain ranks highest in the specific hierarchy of organs to maintain the level of Se and the expression of selenoproteins under the circumstances of Se deficiency. Dyshomeostasis of Se and dysregulation of selenoproteins result in encephalopathy such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, depression, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and multiple sclerosis. This review provides a summary and discussion of Se metabolism, selenoprotein function, and their roles in modulating brain diseases based on the most currently published literature. It focuses on how Se is utilized and transported to the brain, how selenoproteins are biosynthesized and function physiologically in the brain, and how selenoproteins are involved in neurodegenerative diseases. At the end of this review, the perspectives and problems are outlined regarding Se and selenoproteins in the regulation of encephalopathy.

Abstract
Iron is a trace metal that takes part in the maintenance of body homeostasis by, for instance, aiding in energy production and immunity. A body of evidence now demonstrates that dysfunction in iron metabolism can have detrimental effects and is intricately associated with the development of neuropsychiatric disorders, including Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), anxiety, and schizophrenia. For instance, changes in serum and central nervous system (CNS) levels of iron and in proteins mediating iron metabolism have been documented in patients grappling with the aforementioned diseases. By contrast, targeting iron metabolism by using iron chelators, for instance, has proven to be effective in alleviating disease burden. Therefore, here we review the state-of-the-art regarding the role of iron metabolism and its dysfunction in the context of neuropsychiatric disorders. Furthermore, we discuss how targeting iron metabolism can be an effective therapeutic option to tackle this class of diseases. Finally, we discuss the mechanisms linking this dysfunction to behavioral changes in these disorders. Harnessing the knowledge of iron metabolism is not only key to the characterization of novel molecular targets and disease biomarkers but also crucial to drug repurposing and drug design.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Globally, depression is a serious public health problem with high incidence and recurrence rate. Although studies analyzed the association between different oxidative stress components and depression, few of them have explored the effect of total antioxidant capacity on depression. We aimed to explore the cross-sectional association of total antioxidant capacity with depression prevalence by sex group, and whether there was an interaction between the total antioxidant capacity and other exposures. METHODS This study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2007 to 2018. A total of 24,375 participants were included. The Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) and the Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) were used to estimate the antioxidant capacity. The association between total antioxidant capacity and depression were analyzed using binary logistic regression. RESULTS Both CDAI and OBS were inversely associated with the prevalence of depression (P < 0.05). There was an interaction between OBS and hypertension (P-interaction = 0.043), and none of the other variables (including sex) had a statistically significant interaction with OBS. Higher levels of OBS were strongly associated with lower odds ratio of depression, especially in the non-hypertensive group. There were three subgroups that had lower odds ratio of depression compared with the OBS 1 combined hypertension subgroup (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Higher total antioxidant capacity was significantly associated with lower odds ratio of depression. An interaction existed between OBS and hypertension in the whole sample. The inverse association between OBS and depression was clearer in individuals without hypertension than in individuals with hypertension.

Abstract
Meals served to children should not only satisfy hunger and taste preferences but also be nutritionally adequate. Nutrition in early childhood is critical, as children spend a significant portion of their day in kindergarten or preschool, making these settings key contributors to their overall dietary intake. With the rising prevalence of nutrition-related health conditions among children, early interventions are essential for developing and establishing lifelong healthy eating habits. This study assessed the nutritional value and quality of children's diets in two distinct settings: kindergartens in Wroclaw, Poland, and preschools in Sydney, Australia, evaluating their alignment with the planetary health diet. The research analysed 10-day menu cycles from five kindergartens in Wroclaw and the contents of lunchboxes from five preschools in Sydney's Upper North Shore area. A total of 100 menus were reviewed in Poland, while 100 children's lunchboxes were assessed in Australia. Different analytical methods were employed: the Diet 6D software program for the Polish menus and the Food Consumption Score for the Australian lunchboxes. Both methods revealed dietary imbalances, such as excessive intake of protein, vitamin A, salt, and sugar, alongside deficiencies in calcium, vitamin C, and vitamin D. The study concluded that children's diets should adhere to nutritional guidelines, meeting both Polish and Australian standards, and align with the principles of the planetary health diet. To achieve this, nutritional education is essential for kindergarten staff in Poland, while targeted educational interventions are needed for parents and children in both Poland and Australia, promoting health and environmental sustainability through better nutrition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Various vitamins and minerals have been implicated in the aetiology of depression. OBJECTIVE To estimate the effects of micronutrient exposures on major depressive disorder (MDD) and recurrent depression (rMDD) using Mendelian randomisation (MR), a method using genetic data to estimate causal effects given certain assumptions. METHODS We undertook a comprehensive bidirectional MR study of multiple micronutrient exposures on MDD and rMDD. Summary statistics were obtained from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (PGC) genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of MDD (cases = 116,209; controls = 314,566) and rMDD (cases = 17,451; controls = 62,482). RESULTS None of the micronutrients with available genetic instruments were strongly associated with MDD or rMDD using traditional MR methods. However, using methods to increase analytical power by accounting for genetically correlated variants (e.g., cIVW) highlighted five micronutrients with possible causal effects. Point estimates for rMDD were the largest magnitude, with three micronutrients suggestive of a protective effect: serum iron (ORcIVW 0.90 per SD increase; 95% CI 0.85-0.95; p = 0.0003); erythrocyte copper (ORcIVW 0.97; 95% CI 0.95-0.99; p = 0.0004); and 25(OH) vitamin D (ORcIVW 0.81; 0.66-0.99; p = 0.04). Apparent adverse effects of increased selenium on the risk of MDD (ORcIVW 1.03; 95% CI 1.02-1.05; p = 0.0003) and rMDD (ORcIVW 1.08; 95% CI 1.00-1.08; p = 0.06), and serum magnesium on rMDD (ORcIVW 1.21; 1.01-1.44; p = 0.04); were less consistent between methods and may be driven by pleiotropy. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest weak evidence for a protective effect of iron, copper and 25(OH)D on major depressive outcomes, with mixed evidence for selenium and magnesium. There was no evidence to support a causal effect of any other micronutrients on MDD or rMDD, although genetic instruments were lacking, with insufficient power to detect small but important effects. Future micronutrient supplementation trials should ensure ample statistical power given modest causal effect estimates and consider potential risks of supplementation, as some micronutrient effect estimates suggested potential harm in excess.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary copper intake is a promising predictor of peripheral neuropathy. There is no research exploring the potential link between dietary copper intake and peripheral neuropathy. METHODS The information utilized in our research was collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 1999 and 2004. The relationship between dietary copper intake and peripheral neuropathy was analyzed using a multivariate logistic regression model and restricted cubic spline (RCS). RESULTS The RCS analysis results showed a U-shaped nonlinear relationship between dietary copper intake and peripheral neuropathy (P for nonlinearity < 0.001). The threshold effect analysis results indicated that when dietary copper intake was less than 0.889 mg/d, the risk of peripheral neuropathy decreased with increasing copper intake (OR: 0.388, 95% CI: 0.200-0.753). When dietary copper intake was ≥ 0.889 mg/d, the risk of peripheral neuropathy increased with increasing copper intake (OR: 1.129, 95% CI: 1.006-1.266). And the incidence rate of peripheral neuropathy in the first quantile (OR: 1.421, 95% CI: 1.143-1.766), the third quantile (OR: 1.358, 95% CI: 1.057-1.744), and the fourth quantile (OR: 1.676, 95% CI: 1.250-2.248) of dietary copper intake were significantly higher than that in the second quantile (where the inflection point was located). CONCLUSION Our study suggests that both insufficient and excessive dietary copper intake may be associated with an increased incidence of peripheral neuropathy. However, further research is needed to provide definitive evidence and confirm these findings.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) exposure have been identified as risk factors for Helicobacter pylori seropositivity, possibly due to the immune suppression by Cd and Pb. Physical activity (PA) can induce an immune response. However, whether PA can reduce the effect of Cd and Pb on H pylori infection remains elusive. This study aims to investigate the association of blood Cd and Pb levels with H pylori infection and explore the intermediary effects of PA. This cross-sectional survey was conducted using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) of the 1999 to 2000 cycle (n = 9965). Participants without clear serological testing data, or absent in PA, blood Cd, and Pb information were excluded. Collinearity analysis was performed to remove the variables with high collinearity. Restricted cubic spline curve analysis was adopted to assess the nonlinear association of Cd and Pb with H pylori infection. The logistic regression analysis, generalized linear models, sensitivity analysis, and P for trend test were used to further analyze their relationship. Then, we analyzed the association of Cd and Pb with H pylori infection in 2 PA groups. Totally 3638 participants were divided into H pylori-negative (n = 2545) and H pylori-positive group (n = 1093). Pb exhibited a linear relationship but Cd had a nonlinear relationship with H pylori infection. Besides, the elevation of Cd and Pb both independently predicted H pylori infection after adjusting various variables (P < .05). The robust relationship was confirmed by the P for trend test (P for trend < .05). Under Cd exposure, the risk of H pylori infection was lower in the active PA group than in the inactive group (P < .05). A reverse result was found under the Pb exposure (P < .05). Exposure to Cd and Pb are positively linked to H pylori infection. PA may alleviate the effect of Cd on H pylori infection but may enhance H pylori infection under Pb exposure. Therefore, PA should be recommended in the appropriate season or region.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to explore the relationship between female reproductive factors (age at first birth (AFB), age at last birth (ALB), gravidity, and number of live birth (NLB)) and prevalence of depression among the US women. METHODS The relationship between AFB, ALB, gravidity, and NLB with the prevalence of depression was explored using publicly available data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005-2018. This cross-sectional study included female participants aged 20 years and older, with reproductive factors and depressive symptoms reported by the participants. Depression was evaluated using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, with a score of ≥ 10 representing major depression disorder. Weighted multivariable logistic regression and restricted cubic splines (RCS) were utilized to explore the association of AFB, ALB, gravidity and NLB with depression. RESULTS In this study of 11,488 US women, 1,332 (11.6%) women had depression. Compared to the reference group of women with AFB under 18 years, the fully adjusted ORs and 95% CIs for depression were 0.83 (95% CI: 0.68-0.99), 0.75 (95% CI: 0.60-0.95), and 0.69 (95% CI: 0.51-0.93) for women with AFB of 21-23, 24-26, and 27-29 years, respectively. Furthermore, women with five or more pregnancies had a significantly higher prevalence of depression compared to those with two or fewer pregnancies (OR = 1.20, 95% CI: 1.01-1.42). RCS models demonstrated linear associations of ALB, gravidity and NLB with the prevalence of depression. Additionally, the RCS analysis revealed a roughly L-shaped relationship between AFB and prevalence of depression. CONCLUSIONS Women with later AFB are associated with a decreased prevalence of depression, while multiple pregnancies are associated with an increased prevalence of depression. These findings suggest that reproductive factors should be considered when screening for and developing preventive strategies for depression.

Abstract
Migraine is a common clinical neurological disorder that adversely affects humans and society. The relationship between copper intake and migraine has been less studied and controversial. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between copper intake and migraine and to guide dietary interventions. The data for this study were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database from 1999 to 2004, involving a total of 12,724 participants. The relationship between copper intake and migraine was examined using weighted multivariate logistic regression models, and smooth-fit curves were plotted to explore the relationship. After non-linear relationships were found, recursive algorithms and two-stage linear regression models were used to calculate inflection points. Stratified analyses were also performed to explore population differences. In the model corrected for all covariates, the OR (95% CI) of copper intake with migraine was 1.19 (0.97, 1.46), which was not statistically significant. However, the results of the linear trend test suggested that their relationship might be non-linear. Smooth-fit curves confirmed the non-linear relationship between copper intake and migraine, and an inflection point (0.98 mg/day) was identified. There was no statistical significance before the inflection point, but after the inflection point, copper intake was positively associated with migraine attacks. Stratified analyses showed that this non-linear relationship persisted in females, people under 45 years old, and people with BMI less than 30. In this large cross-sectional study, we found a non-linear correlation between copper intake and migraine.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between the number of food kinds and the risk of depression in adults was examined. METHODS According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 4593 adults were included in the study. The number of food kinds was collected via 24‒hour dietary recalls. Depression was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire‒9. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline models were applied to assess the association between the number of food kinds and the risk of depression. RESULTS This study included 4593 study participants, 451 of whom were diagnosed with depression. The revised advantage ratios (with corresponding confidence intervals) for the prevalence of depression among individuals in the fourth quartiles of the number of food kinds (Q4) in comparison to the lowest quartile (Q1) were determined to be 0.59 (0.36‒0.96), respectively. According to our subgroup analyses, the number of food kinds was negatively associated with the risk of depression in females, participants aged 18‒45 and 45‒65 years, and participants with a body mass index (BMI) of 25 to 24.9 kg/m2. According to our dose‒response analysis, the number of food kinds was linearly associated with the risk of depression (Pfor nonlinear=0.5896). CONCLUSION The risk of depression exhibited a linear and negative correlation with the number of food kinds. The results indicated that a diversified diet was an effective nonpharmacological approach that deserved further generalization.

Abstract
Inflammation plays an important role in depression, and the neutrophil-to-albumin ratio (NPAR) is a cost-effective and readily available novel biomarker of inflammation. The association between NPAR and depression is unclear; therefore, to assess the relationship between NPAR and depression, we conducted a cross-sectional study of 33,768 participants ≥ 18 years of age from the 2005-2018 NHANES database. NPAR was calculated as Neutrophil percentage (in total WBC count) (%) × 100/Albumin (g/dL). Multivariate logistic regression models were used to test the independent association between NPAR and depression, adjusting for demographic factors, education, smoking status, alcohol consumption, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, body mass index, the ratio of income to poverty, and history of cardiovascular disease. Results showed that NPAR was significantly and positively associated with depression. When NPAR were analyzed as a categorical variable, there was a 20% increase in the prevalence of depression in the quartile with the highest NPAR compared to the quartile with the lowest NPAR (OR 1.20[95% CI 1.06, 1.36]). Smoothed curve fitting and threshold effect analyses also showed a positive association between NPAR and depression, with an inflection point for threshold and saturation effects of 12.65. NPAR was positively associated with the likelihood of developing depression when NPAR > 12.65 (OR 1.06[95% CI 1.04, 1.09]). The results of subgroup analyses and interaction tests indicated that smoking status had a significant effect on the relationship between NPAR and depression (P < 0.05). Our study reveals a positive association between NPAR levels and depression, suggesting that higher NPAR levels are associated with an increased likelihood of developing depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is widely known that sex differences have a significant impact on patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). This study aims to evaluate the sex-related connection between serum trace elements and changes in neurometabolism in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) of MDD patients. METHODS 109 untreated MDD patients and 59 healthy controls underwent proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) under resting conditions. We measured metabolic ratios in the ACC from both sides. Additionally, venous blood samples were taken from all participants to detect calcium (Ca), phosphorus, magnesium (Mg), copper (Cu), ceruloplasmin (CER), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) levels. We performed association and interaction analyses to explore the connections between the disease and gender. RESULTS In individuals with MDD, the Cu/Zn ratio increased, while the levels of Mg, CER, Zn and Fe decreased. Male MDD patients had lower Cu levels, while female patients had an increased Cu/Zn ratio. We observed significant gender differences in Cu, CER and the Cu/Zn ratio in MDD. Male patients showed a reduced N-acetyl aspartate (NAA)/phosphocreatine + creatine (PCr + Cr) ratio in the left ACC. The NAA/PCr + Cr ratio decreased in the right ACC in patients with MDD. In the left ACC of male MDD patients, the Cu/Zn ratio was inversely related to the NAA/PCr + Cr ratio, and Fe levels were negatively associated with the GPC + PC/PCr + Cr ratio. CONCLUSIONS Our findings highlight gender-specific changes in Cu homeostasis among male MDD patients. The Cu/Zn ratio and Fe levels in male MDD patients were significantly linked to neurometabolic alterations in the ACC.

Abstract
Background and objective Depression is a widespread mental health condition that can impact both mental and physical well-being. Prior research has shown that high levels of copper in the blood and low levels of folate are linked to depression. This study aimed to explore whether serum folate levels, independently or in combination with serum copper levels, associated with the risk of depression. Methods Data from participants aged 18-80 years in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2011 to 2016 were analyzed to examine the role of trace elements. Depression was assessed using the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Logistic regression analyses were employed to evaluate the main effect of serum copper and folate levels on depression. Three indices, including the relative excess risk of interaction (RERI), attributable proportion of interaction (API), and synergy index (SI), were used to analyze the interaction effect. Results Among the 4,847 participants selected for this study, 429 (8.9%) had PHQ-9 scores above 10, which we defined as having depressive symptoms. After adjusting for all confounding factors, higher serum copper levels [≥15.5 vs. <15.5 μmol/L, odds ratio (OR): 1.54; 95% confidence intervals (CI): 1.18-2.11] and folate deficiency (folate ≥53.7 vs. <53.7 μmol/L, OR: 1.44; 95% CI: 1.21-2.10) were associated with an increased risk of depression. Patients with both higher serum copper levels and folate deficiency (OR: 2.11; 95% CI: 1.43-3.14) had the highest risk of depression than other levels. High copper levels and low folate levels are associated with the occurrence of depression symptoms, and there may be a synergistic effect between them (SI: 1.65; 95% CI: 1.49-4.76), with this interaction accounting for 19% of depression cases (API: 0.19; 95% CI: 0.01-0.54). Conclusion There may be a synergistic interaction between high copper levels and low folate levels associated with increasing risk of depression. Further population-based interventional studies are needed to confirm whether folic acid supplementation is effective in preventing depression in individuals with high blood copper levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between dietary vitamin C intake and depression in adults. METHODS This cross-sectional study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) during 2005 to 2020. Logistic regressions and restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression were used to assess the association between dietary vitamin C intake and depression. Additionally, we performed stratified and sensitivity analyses to evaluate the stability of the results. RESULTS This study included 38,157 participants, with 3448 (9.04 %) of them experiencing depression. The vitamin C intake was negatively associated with depression after adjusting for all covariates (OR = 0.91, 95%CI: 0.88-0.94, P < 0.001). Similar inverse associations were observed when vitamin C intake was transformed into categorical variables. Individuals in higher quartiles of dietary vitamin C intake (Q2, Q3, and Q4) had lower odds ratios (ORs) compared to those in the lowest quartile (Q1), as indicated by adjusted ORs of 0.78 (95 % CI: 0.71-0.87, P < 0.001), 0.74 (95 % CI: 0.67-0.82, P < 0.001), and 0.73 (95 % CI: 0.65-0.81, P < 0.001), respectively. The RCS analysis found an L-shaped nonlinear relationship between dietary vitamin C intake and depression, after adjusting for all covariates (P for non-linearity<0.001). Consumption of vitamin C was inversely associated with depression (OR = 0.994, 95%CI: 0.993-0.996, P < 0.001) for intakes below 93.61 mg, but there was no association between dietary vitamin C intake and depression (P = 0.980) for intakes of 93.61 mg or higher. The inverse associations between vitamin C intake and depression remained robust in stratified and sensitivity analyses. LIMITATIONS This study was a cross-sectional study, and therefore unable to establish a causal relationship between dietary vitamin C intake and depression. We are unable to fully eliminate the confounding effects resulted from other unmeasured or unknown factors. CONCLUSION The study revealed a negative association between dietary vitamin C intake and depression, as well as an L-shaped nonlinear relationship between vitamin C intake and depression.

Abstract
Sleep is a fundamental state for maintaining the organism homeostasis. Disruptions in sleep patterns predispose to the appearance of memory impairments and mental disorders, including depression. Recent pre-clinical studies have highlighted the antidepressant-like properties of the synthetic compound 2-phenyl-3-(phenylselanyl)benzofuran (SeBZF1). To further investigate the neuromodulatory effects of SeBZF1, this study aimed to assess its therapeutic efficacy in ameliorating neurobehavioral impairments induced by sleep deprivation (SD) in mice. For this purpose, a method known as multiple platforms over water was used to induce rapid eye movement (REM) SD. Two hours after acute SD (24 h), male Swiss mice received a single treatment of SeBZF1 (5 mg/kg, intragastric route) or fluoxetine (a positive control, 20 mg/kg, intraperitoneal route). Subsequently, behavioral tests were conducted to assess spontaneous motor function (open-field test), depressive-like behavior (tail suspension test), and memory deficits (Y-maze test). Brain structures were utilized to evaluate oxidative stress markers, monoamine oxidase (MAO) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities. Our findings revealed that SD animals displayed depressive-like behavior and memory impairments, which were reverted by SeBZF1 and fluoxetine treatments. SeBZF1 also reverted the increase in lipoperoxidation levels and glutathione peroxidase activity in the pre-frontal cortex in mice exposed to SD. Besides, the increase in hippocampal AChE activity induced by SD was overturned by SeBZF1. Lastly, cortical MAO-B activity was reestablished by SeBZF1 in mice that underwent SD. Based on the main findings of this study, it can be inferred that the compound SeBZF1 reverses the neurobehavioral alterations induced by sleep deprivation in male Swiss mice.

Abstract
Background The association between dietary zinc intake and epilepsy remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between zinc intake from the diet and epilepsy, employing Mendelian randomization (MR) to explore potential causal links between zinc and epilepsy. Methods The cross-sectional study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2013 and 2018. Among the 4,434 participants included, 1.5% (67/4,434) reported having epilepsy. Restricted cubic spline models and logistic regression models were employed to examine the relationships between dietary zinc intakes and epilepsy. Subsequently, a 2-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was conducted using the inverse variance weighted (IVW) approach as the primary analysis. Results In the restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis, the relationship between dietary zinc consumption and epilepsy displayed an L-shaped curve (nonlinear, p = 0.049). After multivariate adjustments, the adjusted odds ratios for epilepsy in T2 (5.0-11.0 mg/day) and T3 (≥11.0 mg/day) were 0.49 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.26-0.92, p = 0.026) and 0.60 (95% CI: 0.31-1.17, p = 0.132), respectively, compared to the lowest dietary zinc consumption tertile (T1, ≤5.0 mg/day). The IVW method indicated that genetically predicted zinc intake per standard-deviation increase was inversely associated with three types of epilepsy, including all types of epilepsy (OR = 1.06, 95% CI: 1.02-1.11, p = 0.008), generalized epilepsy (OR = 1.13, 95% CI: 1.01-1.25, p = 0.030), and focal epilepsy (documented hippocampal sclerosis) (OR = 1.01, 95% CI: 1.00-1.02, p = 0.025). Conclusion Our findings suggest that a daily zinc intake ranging from 5.0 to 11.0 mg is associated with the lowest risk of epilepsy. Furthermore, Mendelian randomization (MR) studies provide additional support for the existence of a causal relationship between zinc and epilepsy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Current evidence implicates a significant association between depression and obesity and related metabolic dysfunction. The weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI) was recently identified as an ideal index that integrates total body fat, muscle mass, and bone mass. This study investigated the relationship between WWI and depressive symptoms in adults. METHODS Participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005-2018) were enrolled. Depressive symptom severity was measured with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Survey-weighted multivariable logistic regression, subgroup analysis, and generalized additive models were used to determine the relationship between WWI and depressive symptoms. RESULTS A total of 34,575 participants were included, with a mean WWI of 11.01; 2,979 participants were suspected of having depressive symptoms (PHQ-9 score ≥ 10). A significant positive association was identified between WWI and depressive symptoms (odds ratio = 1.416, 95 % confidence interval: 1.303-1.539, P < 0.0001). Subgroup analyses suggested that the association between WWI and depressive symptoms was stronger in individuals who were female, overweight, divorced, middle-aged or older (over 40 years old), and had diabetes. Furthermore, the non-linear multivariable regression revealed an inflection point for the WWI at 11.438, and the association was only significant when the WWI was higher than this point. LIMITATIONS This study was retrospective and only included participants from the United States; therefore, further validation is needed from studies in other countries, especially middle-to-low-income countries, using longitudinal cohorts. CONCLUSIONS This study identified a significant positive association between WWI and depressive symptoms.

Abstract
Current research has shown an increasing acceptance of interventions for depression through dietary modifications. However, whether composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) is associated with depression and all-cause mortality in middle-aged and elderly population remains unknown. This study aimed to explore those associations in American middle-aged and elderly population. Weighted logistic regression models and weighted Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to assess the association of CDAI, covariates, depression, and all-cause mortality, respectively. The stability of the results was also determined by a linear trend test based on CDAI quintiles. Restricted cubic spline curves were employed to test for non-linear relationships. In the model adjusted for all covariates, significant associations were found with the ORs (95% CI) for CDAI and depression [0.77 (0.67, 0.89)] and the HRs (95% CI) for CDAI with all-cause mortality[0.91 (0.83, 1.00)]. Upon conducting restricted cubic spline curves, we found that the association between CDAI and depression was linear, whereas the association between CDAI and all-cause mortality was non-linear with an inflection point of -0.19. Statistical significance was only found before the inflection point. In this study of middle-aged and elderly Americans, CDAI was linearly negatively associated with depression and non-linearly negatively associated with all-cause mortality.

Abstract
Celiac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated disease affecting the small intestine. The only treatment strategy for CD is the gluten-free diet (GFD). One of the more common mental disorders in CD patients is major depressive disorder (MDD). The influence of GFD on the occurrence of MDD symptoms in patients with CD will be evaluated. This diet often reduces nutritional deficiencies in these patients and also helps to reduce depressive symptoms. Both disease entities are often dominated by the same deficiencies of nutrients such as iron, zinc, selenium, iodine, or B and D vitamins. Deficiencies of particular components in CD can favor MDD and vice versa. Gluten can adversely affect the mental state of patients without CD. Also, intestinal microbiota may play an important role in the described process. This work aims to comprehensively assess the common factors involved in the pathomechanisms of MDD and CD, with particular emphasis on nutrient imbalances. Given the complexity of both disease entities, and the many common links, more research related to improving mental health in these patients and the implementation of a GFD would need to be conducted, but it appears to be a viable pathway to improving the quality of life and health of people struggling with CD and MDD. Therefore, probiotics, micronutrients, macronutrients, and vitamin supplements are recommended to reduce the risk of MDD, given that they may alleviate the symptoms of both these disease entities. In turn, in patients with MDD, it is worth considering testing for CD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Observational research has suggested a link between vitamin D insufficiency and depression, while evidence from randomized trials examining the association have yielded inconsistent results. Food security and diet quality are also associated with both vitamin D insufficiency and depression. However, the potential interactions between these factors have not been well described. METHODS In order to examine the associations between depression, vitamin D status, food security, and diet quality, data from 8988 US adults (≥20 years) in NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys) 2015-2018 were analyzed. Questionnaire-assessed depression, food security, and diet quality and laboratory-analyzed serum vitamin D were used. RESULTS Lack of full food security and a 10-point decrease in Healthy Eating Index 2015 score were independently associated with higher risk of mild to severe depression (OR 3.72 and 1.20, respectively, p < 0.001). The association between insufficient serum vitamin D (<75 nmol/L) and depression was fully attenuated after adjusting for food security and diet quality (p = 0.41). LIMITATIONS A major limitation of this paper, like all analyses of NHANES, is the inability to establish the temporality of the relationships between food security and diet quality with depression. CONCLUSIONS Food security and diet quality, but not vitamin D status, were significantly associated with depression. This highlights how evaluating food security and diet quality are critical in research and public health interventions related to depression. Future interventions, especially into vitamin D insufficiency, as well as health policies should assess and address these factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Environmental factors play an important role in developing mental disorders. This study aimed to investigate the associations of metal and nonmetal elements in drinking water with the risk of depression and anxiety and to assess whether diets modulate these associations. METHODS We conducted a prospective cohort study including 24,285 participants free from depression and anxiety from the Yinzhou Cohort study in the 2016-2021 period. The exposures were measured by multiplying metal and nonmetal element concentrations in local pipeline terminal tap water samples and total daily drinking water intakes. Cox regression models adjusted for multi-level covariates were used to estimate adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs). RESULTS During an average follow-up period of 4.72 and 4.68 years, 773 and 1334 cases of depression and anxiety were identified, respectively. A 1 standard deviation (SD) increase in manganese exposure reduced the incidence of depression by 8% (HR 0.92, 95%CI 0.88 to 0.97). In contrast, with a 1 SD increase in copper and cadmium exposure, the incidence of depression increased by 6% (HR 1.06, 95%CI 1.01 to 1.11) and 8% (HR 1.08, 95%CI 1.00 to 1.17), respectively. The incidence of anxiety increased by 39% (HR 1.39, 95%CI 1.20 to 1.62), 33% (HR 1.33, 95%CI 1.03 to 1.71), and 14% (HR 1.14, 95%CI 1.03 to 1.25) respectively for a 1 SD increase in manganese, iron, and selenium exposure. Diets have a moderating effect on the associations of metal and nonmetal elements with the risk of anxiety. Stronger associations were observed in older, low-income groups and low-education groups. CONCLUSIONS We found significant associations between exposure to metal and nonmetal elements and depression and anxiety. Diets regulated the associations to some extent.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to heavy metals considered a major risk factor for mental health. OBJECTIVE Examining how heavy metals in blood are associated with depression in individuals of various body mass indexes. METHODS A total sample of 15,560 individuals was screened, with 4355 participants finally enrolled to study. The PHQ-9 was used to assess participants' depressive symptoms. RESULTS A logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the relationship between the levels of heavy metals in the blood and the depression. Serum cadmium levels were found to be associated with risk of depression, with an odds ratio of 2.247 (95 % CI: 1.584-3.244). However, no significant correlations were observed between depression and blood levels of lead, selenium, and manganese. Subgroup analysis was performed and found that higher Cd concentrations were associated with a greater risk of depression at the same BMI. With the same Cd concentration, the risk of depression was lowest when participants' BMI was ≥30 kg/m2 and increased with increasing BMI when participants' BMI was <30 kg/m2. LIMITATIONS It is not possible to analyze the effect of external exposure to Cd. CONCLUSION Cd in blood may be positively correlated with depression in American adults, and the effect of this trend is different in people with different body mass indices. With the increase in BMI, the risk gradually rises. However, it is lowest among obese people.

Abstract
Aging is a gradual decline of physiological function and tissue homeostasis and, in many instances, is related to increased (neuro)-degeneration, together with inflammation, becoming one of the most important risks for developing neurodegenerative diseases. Certain individual nutrients or foods in combination may counteract aging and associated neurodegenerative diseases by promoting a balance between the pro- and anti-inflammatory responses. Thus, nutrition could represent a powerful modulator of this fine balance, other than a modifiable risk factor to contrast inflammaging. This narrative review explores from a broad perspective the impact of nutrition on the hallmarks of aging and inflammation in Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD) and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Syndrome (ALS), starting from nutrients up to single foods and complex dietary patterns.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between dietary flavonoid intake and depression symptoms in American adults. METHODS Data sets were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2008, 2009-2010, and 2017-2018 survey cycles. Both males and females aged 18 years and older with complete information about dietary flavonoid intake (isoflavones, anthocyanidins, flavan-3-ols, flavanones, flavones, and flavonols), depression symptoms, and covariates were included. Logistic regression models were conducted to calculate the odds ratio (OR) of single dietary flavonoid subclass intake on depression, and the restricted cubic spline (RCS) models were utilized to explore the corresponding dose-response relationships. Additionally, we implemented the weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression and quantile g-computation (qgcomp) models to estimate the mixed effects of six flavonoid subclasses and identify the predominant types. RESULTS After multivariable adjustments, people with higher consumption of flavanones (OR: 0.68, 95% CI: 0.52-0.90, p = 0.008), flavones (OR: 0.63, 95% CI: 0.46-0.87, p = 0.007), flavonols (OR: 0.66, 95% CI: 0.49-0.89, p = 0.008), and total flavonoids (OR: 0.69, 95% CI: 0.50-0.95, p = 0.024) had lower odds of depression symptoms. Meanwhile, significant dose-response relationships were supported by the RCS models. However, no obvious associations between isoflavones, anthocyanidins, flavan-3-ols, and the odds of suffering from depression symptoms were found by the logistic regression models and RCS models. As for the mixed effect, the WQS and qgcomp models both demonstrated that the mixture of six flavonoid subclasses was inversely related to the odds ratios of depression symptoms, and flavones, flavanones, and anthocyanidins were the top 3 contributors. CONCLUSION Our study implied dietary flavonoid intake was associated with the decreased probability of depression symptoms in U.S. adults, among which flavones, flavanones, and anthocyanidins may occupy the predominant roles.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Exposure to heavy metals has been widely recognized as a risk factor for human health. However, there is limited information on the effects of blood heavy metals on gallstones. This study aims to investigate the relationship between blood heavy metals and gallstones using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). METHODS 7192 participants aged 20 years or older with complete information were included in the study. Serum concentrations of heavy metals were determined by inductively coupled plasma kinetic reaction cell mass spectrometry. Gallstones were presented by standard questionnaires. Logistic regression, nonlinear, subgroup, and sensitivity analyses were used to estimate the association between blood heavy metals and gallstones. RESULTS Multivariate logistic regression showed that the highest quintile of blood selenium (Se) was associated with a higher risk of gallstones compared with the lowest quintile (OR = 1.66, 95% CI: 1.16-2.36), particularly in individuals who were under 65 years of age, females, non-Hispanic Whites, non-drinkers, obese, and had a college education or higher. There was no correlation between blood cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), and gallstones in the total population. Restricted cubic spline curves showed that a negative correlation was observed between blood Cd (OR = 0.84, 95% CI: 0.710-1.00), Hg (OR = 0.87, 95% CI: 0.78-0.97) and gallstones when Cd < 0.302 μg/L and Hg < 3.160 μg/L. CONCLUSIONS Blood Se was an independent risk factor for gallstones, particularly in individuals under 65 years old, females, non-Hispanic Whites, non-drinkers, obese, and had a college education or higher. Furthermore, blood Cd and Hg were associated with a reduced risk of gallstones within a certain range.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of specific dietary patterns to alleviate depressive symptoms has gained increasing recognition. The Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) is a crucial criterion for assessing antioxidant diets. We examined the relationship between CDAI and depression among overweight and obese adults through a cross-sectional study conducted in the United States. METHODS We used weighted multivariate logistic regression models with subgroup analysis to study the relationship between CDAI and depression. Generalized additive models were used to determine whether there was a nonlinear association between them. We developed a two-piece linear regression model to calculate the inflection point utilizing a recursive strategy. RESULTS After adjusting for confounding variables, the odds ratios (ORs; 95 % CI) for the correlation between CDAI and depression were 0.75 (0.67, 0.84). A saturation effect emerged for the overweight group, following which we calculated the inflection point for the overweight population, which displayed ORs (95 % CI) of 0.62 (0.47, 0.80) before the inflection point of 0.83 and the ORs (95 % CI) of 1.01 (0.77, 1.31) after 0.83. The interaction was statistically significant in the sex stratification of the obese population. CONCLUSIONS Our study highlighted a negative association between CDAI and depression among overweight and obese adults. Saturation effects and sex differences were observed in the overweight population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Research on the effects of dietary iron intake on depression is limited and controversial. The aim of this study was to explore the association between iron intake and the prevalence of depressive symptoms. METHODS The present study used cross-sectional data from people who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2007 and 2016. Logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline models were applied to investigate the relationship between iron intake and depressive symptoms. RESULTS A total of 16,098 adults aged 20 years or older were included in this study. Compared with individuals with lowest iron intake Q1 (≤8.31 mg/day), the adjusted OR values for dietary iron intake and depression in Q2 (8.32-11.47 mg/day), Q3 (11.48-15.02 mg/day), Q4 (15.03-20.28 mg/day), and Q5 (≥20.29 mg/day) were 0.69 (95 % CI: 0.52-0.91), 0.68 (95 % CI: 0.50-0.94,), 0.59 (95 % CI: 0.42-0.82,), and 0.63 (95 % CI: 0.40-0.98), respectively. The relationship between iron intake and depressive symptoms exhibited a non-linear. Our findings suggested an interaction between body mass index (BMI) and iron intake (P = 0.03). Additionally, the relationship between dietary iron intake and depressive symptoms in adults with a BMI <25 kg/m2 was U-shaped. And the OR of developing depressive symptoms was 0.93 (95 % CI: 0.87-0.99) in individuals with iron intake ≤19.72 mg/day. LIMITATIONS Cross-sectional study and relevant data was based on self-reports. CONCLUSION A higher iron intake is significantly associated with a decreased prevalence of depressive symptoms, and different levels of BMI can modify the association between them.

Abstract
This study aims to evaluate the association between Dietary Total Antioxidant Capacity (dTAC) and Total Antioxidant Capacity of food groups (fgTAC) with the incidence of depression in Brazilian graduates participating in the Cohort of Universities of Minas Gerais (CUME Study). The sample consisted of 2572 participants without a medical diagnosis of depression at baseline who responded to at least one follow-up questionnaire from the CUME Project. The Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power assay was used to determine dTAC. Incidence of depression was estimated by self-reported medical diagnosis of depression during the years of cohort follow-up. Cox regression models were used to relate dTAC and fgTAC to the incidence of depression. The mean follow-up time was 2·96 (1·00) years, and 246 cases of depression were observed (32·3/1000 person-years). The mean dTAC was 11·03 (4·84) mmol/d. We found no associations between higher dTAC and lower risk of developing depression after adjusting for possible confounders. The incidence of depression was inversely associated with fgTAC of the beans and lentils group (hazard ratio (HR): 0·61; 95 % CI 0·41, 0·90). The fgTAC of the junk food group was positively associated with higher incidence of depression after all adjustments (HR: 1·57; 95 % CI 1·08, 2·26). Our findings do not support an association between dTAC and the incidence of depression in a highly educated Brazilian population. However, associations of fgTAC show the importance of analysing the food matrix in which these antioxidants are inserted. We highlight the need for more prospective studies with different nationalities to confirm these results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Flavonoids may have a protective effect against depression. The purpose of this study was to examine whether flavonoid intake was associated with depression. METHODS This is an observational cross-sectional study. We evaluated a sample of 8183 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 2007-2010. The participants had an average age of 46.7 years, and 48.4% of them were male. Flavonoid intake was obtained through dietary recall interviews, and it included six subclasses: isoflavones, anthocyanidins, flavan-3-ols, flavanones, flavones, and flavonols. Depression was identified using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Logistic regression was utilized to evaluate the association between flavonoid intake and depression. Restricted cubic splines (RCS) were utilized to investigate nonlinear associations. Differences between subgroups were explored. Mediation analysis was used to explore confounding/mediating factors. These models were adjusted for age, sex, race/ethnicity, poverty status, education, smoking status, alcohol consumption, BMI, energy intake, physical activity, and chronic diseases. RESULTS There were 765 individuals with depression (PHQ-9 score ≥ 10) in the sample. After adjusting for covariates, flavanones, flavones, and total flavonoid intake were associated with a lower likelihood of depression (OR (95% CI): 0.73(0.64,0.84); 0.36(0.21,0.63); 0.86(0.74,0.99), respectively). A significant inverse correlation was observed between flavonoid consumption and the somatic symptom score of the PHQ-9. We observed a stronger association between flavonoids and depression in non-Hispanic white groups. The relationship between the total flavonoid intake and depression was explained to some extent by sleep duration (13.8%). CONCLUSIONS Flavonoid intake was associated with lower odds of depression.

Abstract
The relationships between mixtures of multiple minerals and depression have not been explored. Therefore, we analyzed the relationship between the mixture of nine dietary minerals [calcium (Ca), phosphorus, magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), zinc, copper (Cu), sodium, potassium (K), and selenium (Se)] and depressive symptoms in the general population. We screened 20,342 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2018. We fitted the general linear regression, Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR), and Bayesian semiparametric regression models to explore associations and interactions. We obtained the relative importance of dietary minerals by calculating posterior inclusion probabilities (PIPs). The dietary intakes of minerals were obtained using the 24-h dietary recall interview, and depressive symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). The linear analysis showed that nine minerals were negatively associated with PHQ-9 scores. The BKMR analysis showed a negative association between the dietary mineral mixture and PHQ-9 scores, with Se having the largest PIP at 1.0000, followed by K (0.7784). We also observed potential interactions between Ca and Fe, Se and Fe, and K and Mg. Among them, the interaction of Ca and Fe had the largest PIP of 0.986. In addition, the overall effect was more pronounced in females than males, and Cu's PIP (0.8376) was higher in females. Two sensitivity analyses showed that our results were robust. Our study provides a basis for formulating nutritional intervention programs for depression in the future.

Abstract
Copper (Cu) is an essential trace element in the brain and serves as an important cofactor for numerous enzymes involved in a wide range of biochemical processes including neurobehavioral, mitochondrial respiration, and antioxidant effects. Recent studies have demonstrated that copper dyshomeostasis is tightly associated with the development of depression by inducing oxidative stress and inflammatory responses. However, these findings have remained controversial so far. Cumulative studies have shown a positive association, while some other studies showed no association and even a negative association between serum/plasma copper level and depression. Based on these conflicted results, the association was speculated to be due to the clinical features of the population, stages of the disease, severity of copper excess, and types of specimens detected in these studies. In addition, there was an inverse association between dietary copper intake and depression. Furthermore, increasing copper intake could influence dietary zinc and iron intake to prevent and treat depression. Thus, copper supplementation may be a good measure to manage depression. This review provided a deeper understanding of the potential applicability of copper in the prevention and treatment of depression.

Abstract
Background Dietary interventions for migraine are receiving increasing attention. However, it remains unclear whether there is any relationship between migraine and selenium intake. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between selenium intake and migraine. Methods We used multivariate logistic regression equations to explore the association between selenium intake and migraine. Restricted cubic splines were used to examine the presence of non-linear relationships. Upon finding a non-linear relationship, a recursive algorithm was used to calculate the inflection point. Population differences were also explored through stratified analysis. Results In the model adjusted for all covariates, the ORs (95% CI) for the association between selenium intake and migraine were 0.96 (0.88, 1.04), which was no statistical significance. However, the result of the linear trend test with quadrilles of selenium intake indicated the association between selenium intake and migraine may be non-linear. The restricted cubic splines confirmed this non-linear relationship, finding an inflection point (93.1 mcg/day), where the odds of migraine decreased with increasing selenium intake before the inflection point, and no statistically significant relationship was found after the inflection point. The association between selenium intake and migraine was non-linear in all strata except the obese. Conclusion We found a non-linear association between selenium intake and migraine in the general American population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence suggests that alterations in serum trace element concentrations are closely associated with mental illness. However, studies on the relationship between serum copper, zinc, and selenium concentrations and depressive symptoms are limited and with controversial results. We aimed to investigate the association between serum concentrations of these trace elements and depressive symptoms in US adults. METHODS Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (2011-2016) were used in this cross-sectional study. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 Items (PHQ-9) was employed to assess depressive symptoms. Multiple logistic regression was performed to determine the relationship between the serum concentrations of copper, zinc, and selenium and depressive symptoms. RESULTS A total of 4552 adults were included. Subjects with depressive symptoms had higher serum copper concentrations (123.88 ± 1.87) than those without depressive symptoms (116.99 ± 0.86) (p < 0.001). In Model 2, weighted logistic regression analysis showed that the second (Q2) quartile of zinc concentrations (odds ratio [OR] = 1.534, 95% confident interval [CI]: 1.018 to 2.313) were significantly associated with an increased risk of depressive symptoms. Subgroup analysis revealed that the third (Q3) and fourth (Q4) quartiles of copper concentrations (Q3: OR = 2.699, 95% CI: 1.285 to 5.667; Q4: OR = 2.490, 95% CI: 1.026 to 6.046) were also positively associated with depressive symptoms in obese individuals after controlling for all confounders. However, no significant relationship between serum selenium concentrations and depressive symptoms was observed. CONCLUSIONS Obese US adults with high serum copper concentrations, as well as US adults in general with low serum zinc concentrations, were susceptible to depressive symptoms. Nevertheless, the causal mechanisms underlying these relationships need to be further explored.

Abstract
The incidence of neurological diseases, such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and stroke, is increasing. An increasing number of studies have correlated these diseases with brain iron overload and the resulting oxidative damage. Brain iron deficiency has also been closely linked to neurodevelopment. These neurological disorders seriously affect the physical and mental health of patients and bring heavy economic burdens to families and society. Therefore, it is important to maintain brain iron homeostasis and to understand the mechanism of brain iron disorders affecting reactive oxygen species (ROS) balance, resulting in neural damage, cell death and, ultimately, leading to the development of disease. Evidence has shown that many therapies targeting brain iron and ROS imbalances have good preventive and therapeutic effects on neurological diseases. This review highlights the molecular mechanisms, pathogenesis and treatment strategies of brain iron metabolism disorders in neurological diseases.

Abstract
Depression is classified as one of the most common mental disorders. Its prevalence has recently increased, becoming a growing public health threat. This review focuses on clarifying the role and importance of individual nutrients in the diet and the impact of nutrient deficiencies on the risk of depression. Deficiencies in nutrients such as protein, B vitamins, vitamin D, magnesium, zinc, selenium, iron, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids have a significant impact on brain and nervous system function, which can affect the appearance of depressive symptoms. However, it is important to remember that diet in itself is not the only factor influencing the risk of or helping to treat depression. There are many other aspects, such as physical activity, sleep, stress management, and social support, that also play an important role in maintaining mental health. The data review observed that most of the available analyses are based on cross-sectional studies. Further studies, including prospective cohort, case-control studies, are recommended to draw more reliable conclusions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to assess the interactions between mixed heavy metals, genes, and miRNAs implicated in depression development and to design and create miRNA sponges. METHODS The key data-mining approaches in this study were the Comparative Toxicogenomics Database (CTD), MIENTURNET, GeneMania, Metascape, Webgestalt, miRNAsong, and Cytoscape software. RESULTS A mixture of cadmium, lead, mercury, and arsenic was related to the development of depression. Even though the genes acquired from the heavy metals of depression studied were different, the "selenium micronutrient network", "vitamin B12 and folate metabolism", and "positive regulation of peptidyl-serine phosphorylation" pathways were highlighted. The heavy metal mixture altered the genes SOD1, IL6, PTGS2, PON1, BDNF, and ALB, highlighting the role of oxidative stress, pro-inflammatory cytokines, paraoxonase activity, neurotrophic factors, and antioxidants related to depression, as well as the possibility of targeting these genes in prospective depressive treatment. Chr1q31.1, five transcription factors (NR4A3, NR1H4, ATF3, CREB3L3, and NR1I3), the "endoplasmic reticulum lumen," "blood microparticle," and "myelin sheath", were found to be important chromosomal locations, transcription factors, and cellular parts linked to depression and affected by mixed heavy metals. Furthermore, we developed a network-based approach to detect significant genes, miRNA, pathways, and illnesses related to depression development. We also observed eight important miRNAs related to depression induced by mixed heavy metals (hsa-miR-16-5p, hsa-miR-132-3p, hsa-miR-1-3p, hsa-miR-204-5p, hsa-miR-206, hsa-miR-124-3p, hsa-miR-146a-5p, and hsa-miR-26a-5p). In addition, we created and evaluated miRNA sponge sequences for these miRNAs in silico. LIMITATIONS A toxicogenomic design in silico was used. CONCLUSIONS Our findings highlight the importance of oxidative stress, notably SOD1 and the selenium micronutrient network, in depression caused by heavy metal mixtures and provide additional insights into common molecular pathways implicated in depression pathogenesis.

Abstract
Depression is a common mental disorder that seriously affects the quality of life and leads to an increasing global suicide rate. Macro, micro, and trace elements are the main components that maintain normal physiological functions of the brain. Depression is manifested in abnormal brain functions, which are considered to be tightly related to the imbalance of elements. Elements associated with depression include glucose, fatty acids, amino acids, and mineral elements such as lithium, zinc, magnesium, copper, iron, and selenium. To explore the relationship between these elements and depression, the main literature in the last decade was mainly searched and summarized on PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, and other electronic databases with the keywords "depression, sugar, fat, protein, lithium, zinc, magnesium, copper, iron, and selenium". These elements aggravate or alleviate depression by regulating a series of physiological processes, including the transmission of neural signals, inflammation, oxidative stress, neurogenesis, and synaptic plasticity, which thus affect the expression or activity of physiological components such as neurotransmitters, neurotrophic factors, receptors, cytokines, and ion-binding proteins in the body. For example, excessive fat intake can lead to depression, with possible mechanisms including inflammation, increased oxidative stress, reduced synaptic plasticity, and decreased expression of 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), Postsynaptic density protein 95(PSD-95), etc. Supplementing mineral elements, such as selenium, zinc, magnesium, or lithium as a psychotropic medication is mostly used as an auxiliary method to improve depression with other antidepressants. In general, appropriate nutritional elements are essential to treat depression and prevent the risk of depression.

Abstract
Depression is a profound public health concern, yet its etiology remains unclear. A body's magnesium status and low-grade systemic inflammation are associated with depression. However, the interaction of magnesium status and inflammation on depression/depressive symptoms is unknown. We assessed the association between serum magnesium levels and depressive symptoms by analyzing data from the Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan 2005-2008. In total, 2196 participants aged ≥20 years were included. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 5-item Brief-Symptom Rating Scale. We performed logistic regression and multiple linear regression analyses to examine the association. A dose-response analysis was performed using restricted cubic spline models, and stratification by chronic inflammation was also performed. We found that higher serum magnesium levels were associated with lower depression scores and a lower risk of depression. In the subgroup analysis, serum magnesium levels were inversely associated with depressive symptoms more prominently among people with higher CRP levels, with a threshold at 5 mg/L (≥5 vs. <5) showing a greater difference than at 3 mg/L (≥3 vs. <3). Conclusions: Serum magnesium levels were inversely associated with depressive symptoms. This inverse association was affected by inflammation level. A dose-response relationship was also observed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between vitamin intake and depression has attracted increasing attention. However, several studies examining such relationship among populations at different age groups have produced inconsistent findings. This study was aimed to investigate the cross-sectional association between vitamin K intake and depressive symptoms in US adults. METHODS We used the data from a nationally representative sample of 11,687 adults from the 2013 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Vitamin K intake was assessed by the 24-h dietary recall at the first day. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Logistic regression and generalized additive model were used to examine the association between vitamin K intake and depressive symptoms. RESULTS The weighted prevalence of depressive symptoms was 10.2% (8.0% in men and 12.0% in women). We observed a significant inverse linear relationship between vitamin K intake and depressive symptoms in models adjusted for age, sex, race/ethnicity, marital status, educational status, family poverty income ratio (PIR), home status, body mass index (BMI), smoking status, physical activity, sleep disorders, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes. The odds ratios (OR) (95% CI) for the highest compared with the lowest quartile of vitamin K intake was 0.68 (95% CI: 0.52, 0.89, p-trend < 0.05). The association was similar in subgroups stratified by age, sex, race/ethnicity, marital status, educational status, PIR, home status, BMI, smoking status, physical activity, sleep disorders, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes. CONCLUSION Vitamin K intake was inversely and independently associated with the odds of depressive symptoms in the US adults. Prospective studies are warranted to confirm our findings.

Abstract
Background There is only limited evidence for an association between calcium (Ca) and depression, and the relationship was inconsistent. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the relationship between dietary Ca and the risk of depressive symptoms in individuals over the age of 18 in the US. Methods We extracted 14,971 participants from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2016 to probe their associations. Dietary Ca intake was measured through 24 h dietary recall method. Patients with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) ≥ 10 scores were believed to have depressive symptoms. The association between dietary Ca and depressive symptoms was investigated using multivariate logistic regression, sensitivity analysis, and restricted cubic spline regression. Results In this study, 7.6% (1,144/14,971) of them had depressive symptoms. After adjusting for sex, age, race, poverty to income ratio (PIR), marital status, education, body mass index (BMI), caffeine intake, carbohydrates intake, total energy intake, smoking status, alcohol consumption, physical activity, diabetes, hypertension, severe cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer, serum vitamin D, serum Ca, and Ca supplement, the adjusted ORs value [95% confidence interval (CI)] of depression for the lowest category (Q1 ≤ 534 mg/day) vs. Q2-Q4 of Ca intake were 0.83 (0.69-0.99), 0.97 (0.65-0.95), and 0.80 (0.63-0.98) with the p for trend (p = 0.014). The relationship between dietary Ca intake and depressive symptoms was linear (non-linear p = 0.148). None of the interactions were significant except among races (p for interaction = 0.001). Conclusion Association between dietary Ca and the prevalence of depressive symptoms in US adults. And Ca intake was negatively associated with the risk of depressive symptoms. As Ca intake increased, the prevalence of depressive symptoms decreased.

Abstract
Depression is one of the most common diseases in the older population. Difficulties in recognizing its etiology and recurrence make depression a major challenge for health care professionals. The risk of developing depression is influenced by many factors, including lifestyle and diet. Research studies have shown a relationship between the consumption of specific macro- and microelements and depression. However, so far, no nutritional recommendations on how to reduce the risk of the disease and its relapses in older adults have been developed. This review outlines research results of conducted studies and focuses on both basic and potentially promising elements of diet, such as proteins, carbohydrates, fats, dietary fiber, vitamins (D, E, C, and B), and microelements such as magnesium, zinc, selenium, or iron.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few observational studies have investigated the association of dietary antioxidant intake with post-stroke depression (PSD) risk. We used the cross-sectional and longitudinal design to investigate the independent and joint associations between dietary antioxidant intake and PSD risk and all-cause mortality. METHODS Participants from the 2005-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) aged 20 years and older with stroke were included. Logistic and Cox regression analyses were used to assess the associations of dietary antioxidant intake, including vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, selenium, and carotenoids, and composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) with PSD risk and all-cause mortality. RESULTS The highest quartile of dietary vitamin A (OR: 0.54, 95%CI: 0.32, 0.92), total carotenoids (OR: 0.56, 95%CI: 0.34, 0.94), and selenium intake (OR: 0.53, 95%CI: 0.31, 0.90) were associated with decreased PSD risk compared with those in the lowest quartile. The results showed a negative association between CDAI and PSD risk, with the lowest OR in the third quartiles (OR: 0.49, 95%CI: 0.30, 0.83). Furthermore, the highest quartile of dietary vitamin A (HR: 0.63, 95%CI: 0.45, 0.89), vitamin E (HR: 0.69, 95%CI: 0.48, 0.99), zinc (HR: 0.57, 95%CI: 0.40, 0.81), selenium (HR: 0.64, 95%CI: 0.46, 0.90), and total carotenoids (HR: 0.66, 95%CI: 0.47, 0.92) intake and CDAI (HR: 0.56, 95%CI: 0.39, 0.81) were associated with decreased all-cause mortality compared with those in the lowest quartile. CONCLUSION Increased intake of dietary antioxidant may protect from depressive symptoms and improve the prognosis of stroke patients.

Abstract
Depression is one of the leading health problems, and >300 million people have a major depressive disorder and this number is getting increasing. Depression complicates the management of existing chronic diseases and the management of complications that may arise. A person's mental state can affect their food preferences, and food preferences can also affect their mental state. In this paper, depression and eating behavior, diet quality, folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, selenium, zinc and copper, prebiotics and probiotics are discussed. Research on the subject emphasizes that diet quality may also affect the occurrence of depression. However, studies also indicated that dietary nutrients such as folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, selenium, and magnesium might be associated with the risk of depression.

Abstract
Depression is a mental illness that affects the normal lives of over 300 million people. Unfortunately, about 30% to 40% of patients do not adequately respond to pharmacotherapy and other therapies. This review focuses on exploring the relationship between dietary nutrition and depression, aiming to find safer and efficient ingredients to alleviate depression. Diet can affect depression in numerous ways. These pathways include the regulation of tryptophan metabolism, inflammation, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, microbe-gut-brain axis, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and epigenetics. Furthermore, probiotics, micronutrients, and other active substances exhibit significant antidepressant effects by regulating the above pathways. These provide insights for developing antidepressant foods.
