Size distribution of particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in fresh combustion smoke and ambient air: A review

Characterization of fire investigators' polyaromatic hydrocarbon exposures using silicone wristbands

BACKGROUND

Exposures to polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contribute to cancer in the fire service. Fire investigators are involved in evaluations of post-fire scenes. In the US, it is estimated that there are up to 9000 fire investigators, compared to approximately 1.1 million total firefighting personnel. This exploratory study contributes initial evidence of PAH exposures sustained by this understudied group using worn silicone passive samplers.

OBJECTIVES

Evaluate PAH exposures sustained by fire investigators at post-fire scenes using worn silicone passive samplers. Assess explanatory factors and health risks of PAH exposure at post-fire scenes.

METHODS

As part of a cross-sectional study design, silicone wristbands were distributed to 16 North Carolina fire investigators, including eight public, seven private, and one public and private. Wristbands were worn during 46 post-fire scene investigations. Fire investigators completed pre- and post-surveys providing sociodemographic, occupational, and post-fire scene characteristics. Solvent extracts from wristbands were analyzed via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Results were used to estimate vapor-phase PAH concentration in the air at post-fire scenes.

RESULTS

Fire investigations lasted an average of 148 minutes, standard deviation ± 93 minutes. A significant positive correlation (r=0.455, p<.001) was found between investigation duration and PAH concentrations on wristbands. Significantly greater time-normalized PAH exposures (p=0.039) were observed for investigations of newer post-fire scenes compared to older post-fire scenes. Regulatory airborne PAH exposure limits were exceeded in six investigations, based on exposure to estimated vapor-phase PAH concentrations in the air at post-fire scenes.

DISCUSSION

Higher levels of off-gassing and suspended particulates at younger post-fire scenes may explain greater PAH exposure. Weaker correlations are found between wristband PAH concentration and investigation duration at older post-fire scenes, suggesting reduction of off-gassing PAHs over time. Exceedances of regulatory PAH limits indicate a need for protection against vapor-phase contaminants, especially at more recent post-fire scenes.

Chemical contamination affecting filter-feeding bivalves in no-take marine protected areas from Brazil

Marine protected areas (MPAs) are zones geographically delimited under pre-defined management goals, seeking to reduce anthropogenic threats to biodiversity. Despite this, in recent years reports of MPAs affected by chemical contamination has grown. Therefore, this study addresses this critical issue assessing legacy and current chemical contamination in filter-feeder bivalves obtained in very restrictive no-take MPAs from Brazil. The detected pollutants encompass polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), linear alkylbenzenes (LABs), and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) like dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDTs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Despite protective measures, bivalves from nine MPAs exhibited high LABs (13.2-1139.0 ng g-1) and DDTs levels (0.1-62.3 ng g-1). PAHs were present in low concentrations (3.1-29.03 ng g-1), as PCBs (0.7-6.4 ng g-1), hexachlorobenzene (0.1-0.2 ng g-1), and Mirex (0.1-0.3 ng g-1). Regardless of the sentinel species, MPAs and management categories, similar accumulation patterns were observed for LABs, DDTs, PAHs, and PCBs. Based on the limits proposed by Oslo Paris Commission, the measured levels of PAHs, PCBs and were below the environmental assessment criteria. Such findings indicate the no biological effects are expected to occur. However, they are higher considering background conditions typically measured in remote or pristine areas and potential simultaneous exposure. Such findings indicate an influence of anthropogenic sources, emphasizing the urgency for monitoring programs guiding strategic management efforts to safeguard these areas.

Promotive effects of marine-derived dimethyl sulfoxide on the photodegradation of phenanthrene in the atmosphere

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), a versatile medium, is a particular component in the marine atmosphere that possibly causes polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to degrade differently than they do in the continental atmosphere. In this study, phenanthrene (Phe) was used as a model PAH in batch photochemical experiments to investigate the chemical actions of DMSO and the underlying mechanisms. The photodegradation of Phe in aqueous solutions with DMSO volume fractions from 0 % to 100 % was initiated by ultraviolet (UV) radiation and promoted by singlet oxygen, which was consistent with pseudo-first-order kinetics. Phe photodegraded faster in a mixture of DMSO and water than in water or DMSO alone, and the rate constant showed a unimodal distribution over the DMSO fraction range, peaking at 33 % DMSO (0.0333 ± 0.0009 min-1) and 40 % DMSO (0.0199 ± 0.0005 min-1) under 254 nm and 302 nm UV radiation, respectively. This interesting phenomenon was attributed to the competition of DMSO for UV radiation and singlet oxygen and changes in dissolved oxygen and free water contents caused by the interaction between DMSO and water molecules. In addition, 9,10-phenanthrenequinone (9,10-PhQ) with high cytotoxicity was the main photodegradation product of Phe under various conditions. The photodegradation rate of Phe in the mixtures of DMSO and water was comparable to its reaction rate with OH radicals, suggesting that 9,10-PhQ can be rapidly generated in the marine atmosphere, driven by a mechanism different from that in the continental or urban atmosphere. Under the presented experimental conditions, UV intensity and DMSO fraction were the primary factors that affected the photodegradation rate of Phe and 9,10-PhQ and altered their integrated toxicity. The findings of this study support the conclusion that the marine atmosphere is an essential field in the atmospheric transport of PAHs, in which DMSO is an important component that affects their photodegradation.

Pollution characteristics, source apportionment and absorption spectra of size-resolved PAHs in atmospheric particles in a cold megacity of China

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have the capability for solar radiation absorption related to climate forcing. Herein, pollution characteristics and absorption spectra of size-resolved PAHs in atmospheric particles in a cold megacity were comprehensively investigated. The mean concentrations of Σ18PAHs in all the 11 particle size ranges were 3.95 ± 4.77 × 104 pg/m3 and 2.17 ± 1.54 × 103 pg/m3 in heating period (HP) and non-heating period (NHP), respectively. Except for most PAHs with 2 and 3 benzene rings in NHP, most other PAHs showed a unimodal distribution pattern with the peak at 0.56-1.0 µm in both periods, which was caused by PAH emission sources. The PAH-related climate forcing was mainly caused by the solar radiation absorptions at ∼325 (∼330) nm and ∼365 nm. In general, the absorption intensities were higher in HP than NHP. The absorption intensity in the particle size range of 0.56-1.0 µm was the highest, and benzo[e]pyrene was the dominant contributor. In colder periods in HP, higher PAH concentrations caused more intensive PAH-related climate forcing. This study provided new insights for pollution characteristics and absorption spectra of size-resolved PAHs in atmospheric particles, which will be useful for better understanding PAH-related climate forcing.

Biological machinery for the production of biosurfactant and their potential applications

The growing biotechnology industry has focused a lot of attention on biosurfactants because of several advantages over synthetic surfactants. These benefits include worldwide public health, environmental sustainability, and the increasing demand from sectors for environmentally friendly products. Replacement with biosurfactants can reduce upto 8% lifetime CO2 emissions avoiding about 1.5 million tons of greenhouse gas released into the atmosphere. Therefore, the demand for biosurfactants has risen sharply occupying about 10% (∼10 million tons/year) of the world production of surfactants. Biosurfactants' distinct amphipathic structure, which is made up of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic components, enables these molecules to perform essential functions in emulsification, foam formation, detergency, and oil dispersion-all of which are highly valued characteristic in a variety of sectors. Today, a variety of biosurfactants are manufactured on a commercial scale for use in the food, petroleum, and agricultural industries, as well as the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. We provide a thorough analysis of the body of knowledge on microbial biosurfactants that has been gained over time in this research. We also discuss the benefits and obstacles that need to be overcome for the effective development and use of biosurfactants, as well as their present and future industrial uses.

Sources-attributed contributions to health risks associated with PM2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons during the warm and cold seasons in an urban area of Eastern Asia

Despite the well-established recognition of the health hazards posed by PM2.5-bound PAHs, a comprehensive understanding of their source-specific impact has been lacking. In this study, the health risks associated with PM2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and source-specific contributions were investigated in the urban region of Taipei during both cold and warm seasons. The levels of PM2.5-bound PAHs and their potential health risks across different age groups of humans were also characterized. Diagnostic ratios and positive matrix factorization analysis were utilized to identify the sources of PM2.5-bound PAHs. Moreover, potential source contribution function (PSCF), concentration-weighted trajectory (CWT) and source regional apportionment (SRA) analyses were employed to determine the potential source regions. Results showed that the total PAHs (TPAHs) concentrations ranged from 0.08 to 2.37 ng m-3, with an average of 0.69 ± 0.53 ng m-3. Vehicular emissions emerged as the primary contributor to PM2.5-bound PAHs, constituting 39.8 % of the TPAHs concentration, followed by industrial emissions (37.6 %), biomass burning (13.8 %), and petroleum/oil volatilization (8.8 %). PSCF and CWT analyses revealed that industrial activities and shipping processes in northeast China, South China Sea, Yellow Sea, and East China Sea, contributed to the occurrence of PM2.5-bound PAHs in Taipei. SRA identified central China as the primary regional contributor of ambient TPAHs in the cold season and Taiwan in the warm season, respectively. Evaluations of incremental lifetime cancer risk demonstrated the highest risk for adults, followed by children, seniors, and adolescents. The assessments of lifetime lung cancer risk showed that vehicular and industrial emissions were the main contributors to cancer risk induced by PM2.5-bound PAHs. This research emphasizes the essential role of precisely identifying the origins of PM2.5-bound PAHs to enhance our comprehension of the related human health hazards, thus providing valuable insights into the mitigation strategies.

Synergistic effect of pyrene and heavy metals (Zn, Pb, and Cd) on phytoremediation potential of Medicago sativa L. (alfalfa) in multi-contaminated soil

The environment in India is contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) due to the occurrence of large anthropogenic activities, i.e., fuel combustion, mineral roasting, and biomass burning. Hence, 13 toxic PAHs were detected: phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, pyrene, and benz(a) anthracene, ben-zo; (b) fluoranthene, benzo(k) fluoranthene, benzo(a) pyrene, benzo(ghi)perylene, dibenz (ah) anthracene, indeno1,2,3-(cd) pyrene, coronene and coronene in the environment (i.e., ambient particulate matter, road dust, sludge, and sewage) of the most industrialized area. Pollutants such as heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons co-contaminate the soil and pose a significant hazard to the ecosystem because these pollutants are harmful to both humans and the environment. Phytoremediation is an economical plant-based natural approach for soil clean-up that has no negative impact on ecosystems. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of pyrene (500 mg kg-1), Zn (150 mg kg-1), Pb (150 mg kg-1), and Cd (150 mg kg-1) alone and in combination on the phytoextraction efficiency of Medicago sativa growing in contaminated soil. Plant biomass, biochemical activities, translocation factors, accumulation of heavy metals, and pyrene removal were determined. After 60 days of planting, compared with those of the control plants, the growth parameters, biomass, and chlorophyll content of the M. sativa plants were significantly lower, and the reactive oxygen species activity, such as proline and polyphenol content and metallothionein protein content, was markedly greater in the pyrene and heavy metal-polluted soils. Furthermore, the combined toxicity of pyrene and all three metals on M. sativa growth and biochemical parameters was significantly greater than that of pyrene, Zn, Pb, or Cd alone, indicating the synergistic effect of pyrene and heavy metals on cytotoxicity. Pyrene stress increased Cd accumulation in M. sativa. After pyrene exposure alone or in combination with Zn-pyrene, a greater pyrene removal rate (85.5-81.44%) was observed than that in Pb-pyrene, Cd-pyrene, and Zn-Pb-Cd-pyrene polluted soils (62.78-71.27%), indicating that zinc can enhance the removal of pyrene from contaminated soil. The resulting hypotheses demonstrated that Medicago sativa can be used as a promising phytoremediation agent for co-contaminated soil.

Characterization of PAHs bound to ambient ultrafine particles around runways at an international airport

The impact of airport activities on air quality, is not sufficiently documented. In order to better understand the magnitude and properly assess the sources of emissions in the sector, it is necessary to establish databases with real data on those pollutants that could have the greatest impact on both health and the environment. Particulate matter (PM), especially ultrafine particles, are a research priority, not only because of its physical properties, but also because of its ability to bind highly toxic compounds such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Samples of PM were collected in the ambient air around the runways at Barajas International Airport (Madrid, Spain) during October, November and December 2021. Samples were gathered using three different sampling systems and analysed to determine the concentration of PAHs bound to PM. A high-volume air sampler, a Berner low-pressure impactor, and an automated off-line sampler developed in-house were used. The agreement between the samplers was statistically verified from the PM and PAH results. The highest concentration of PM measured was 31 μg m-3, while the concentration of total PAH was 3 ng m-3, both comparable to those recorded in a semi-urban area of Madrid. The PAHs showed a similar profile to the particle size distribution, with a maximum in the 0.27-0.54 μm size range, being preferentially found in the submicron size fractions, with more than 84% and around 15-20% associated to UFPs. It was found that the ratio [PAHs(m)/PM(m)] was around 10-4 in the warmer period (October), whereas it more than doubled in the colder months (November-December). It is significant the shift in the relative distribution of compounds within these two periods, with a notable increase in the 5 and 6 ring proportions in the colder period. This increase was probably due to the additional contribution of other external sources, possibly thermal and related to combustion processes, as supported by the PAH diagnostic ratios.

Ambient PM2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) associated with pro-thrombotic biomarkers among young healthy adults: A 16 times repeated measurements panel study

Studies have shown that the cardio/cerebrovascular toxicity of ambient PM2.5 is related to its bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Currently, only a few studies have reported the relationship between PM2.5-bound PAHs and promoted blood coagulation and thrombosis, but there isn't a consistent conclusion. Therefore, we conducted a prospective panel study to investigate the association. Thirty-three young healthy adults participated in sixteen repeated visits from 2014 to 2018 in Tianjin, China. During each visit, three pro-thrombotic biomarkers: ADAMTS13 (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motif 13), D-dimer and Myeloperoxidase (MPO) were measured. Before each visit, ambient PM2.5 samples were daily collected for one week. Sixteen PAHs were determined using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer, and the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model was applied to identify the sources. Linear mixed-effects models were fitted to investigate the associations between PM2.5-bound PAHs exposure and the biomarkers. Thirteen time-metrics were defined to identify significant time points of PM2.5-bound PAHs' effects. We observed that the increase of PM2.5-bound PAHs exposure was significantly associated with reduced ADAMTS13, elevated D-dimer and MPO. At lag0, each 5.7 ng/m3 increase in Benzo[j]fluoranthene and per 3.4 ng/m3 increase Dibenz[a,h]anthracene could make a maximum change of -19.08 % in ADAMTS13 and 132.60 % in D-dimer. Additionally, per 16.43 ng/m3 increase in Chrysene could lead to a maximum elevation of 32.14 % in MPO at lag4. The PM2.5-bound PAHs often triggered more significant changes at lag 3,4 and 6. The ambient PM2.5-bound PAHs originated from six sources: coal combustion (43.10 %), biomass combustion (20.77 %), diesel emission (14.78 %), gasoline emission (10.95 %), industrial emission (7.58 %), and cooking emission (2.83 %). The greatest contributors to alterations in ADAMTS13, D-dimer and MPO are industrial emission (-48.43 %), biomass combustion (470.32 %) and diesel emission (13.14 %) at lag4. Our findings indicated that short-term exposure to ambient PM2.5-bound PAHs can induce alterations of pro-thrombotic biomarkers among healthy adults.

Autumn and spring observations of PM2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in China and Japan

The transboundary transport of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitro-PAHs (NPAHs) aggravated by the East Asian winter monsoon is a major atmospheric environmental issue in East Asia. To thoroughly elucidate the role of the East Asian monsoon on regional PAH and NPAH pollution in East Asia, PM2.5-bound PAHs and NPAHs were investigated concurrently at five sites in Beijing and Shenyang in China and Tsukuba, Kanazawa, and Wajima in Japan in autumn (November 2018) and spring (March 2019). During both autumn and spring sampling periods, the concentrations of PM2.5, PAHs, and NPAHs at sites in China were 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than those at sites in Japan, and showed an opposite temporal variation, with higher concentrations during the autumn sampling period due to intensive emissions and unfavourable weather conditions. During the sampling periods, PAHs at the Beijing and Shenyang sites had mixed sources of traffic emissions and coal and biomass combustion, while those at the Tsukuba, Kanazawa, and Wajima sites were mainly characterized by domestic traffic emissions. In addition, NPAHs at the five sites were jointly affected by primary combustion sources and atmospheric generation, with a greater contribution of atmospheric generation to the Beijing and Shenyang sites. Based on backwards trajectory clustering and concentration-weighted trajectory analysis, external contributions to PM2.5, PAHs, and NPAHs at each site were relatively stable during the two sampling periods, and potential source areas were mainly distributed in domestic cities and nearby sea areas. Therefore, the apparent temporal differences in the characteristics and sources of pollutants between sites in the two countries indicate that transboundary pollution dominated by the East Asian winter monsoon was unobvious in autumn and spring. The results of the study provide a time-specific solution for the effective management of regional air pollution during the East Asian winter monsoon.

Enhanced mitigation of inhalable particles and fine particle-bound PAHs from a novel hazardous waste-power plant candidate

Emissions of the inhalable particle (dp < 10 μm, PM10) and their harmful compositions from combustion sources have high potential on health risk with nearly no regulation. This study investigates the particle size distribution (PSD), as well as the removal mechanism of PM10 and fine particle (FP)-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from the flue gas of a hazardous waste thermal treatment system. It has ultralow regulated emission and becomes a candidate of power generation module. A series of the advanced scrubbers, cyclonic demister, and baghouse was equipped for multi-pollutant control. The moderate or intense low oxygen dilution (MILD) combustion effectively inhibited the PM2.5 generation by volumetric oxidation. Advanced scrubbers removed PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 by 85.24, 68.68, and 97.60%, respectively, which achieved by local supersaturation, heterogeneous condensation of water vapor, and the growth of fine PM. Moreover, the scrubbers effectively scavenged the course PM10 containing the high-molecular-weight PAH homologs onto the water phase but promoted the condensation and absorption of the lighter homologs onto the fine particle surface (dp ∼5.3 μm). The size window (dp = 0.3-1.0 μm) of the minimum efficiency reporting value of a BH filtration led to the peak of FP-PAH mass and BaP equivalent (BaPeq) toxicity at dp = 0.1-0.4 and 0.1-0.8 μm, respectively. Consequently, the synergy of MILD combustion and the SCB-CYC-BH system effectively inhibited the PM2.5, PM10, PM2.5-PAHs, and FP-PAH levels from a waste thermal treatment process and further mitigated the potential health risk.

Particulate matter from a tropical city in southeast Brazil: Impact of biomass burning on polycyclic aromatic compounds levels, health risks, and in vitro toxicity

In the context of a rising global temperature, biomass burning represents an increasing risk to human health, due to emissions of highly toxic substances such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs). Size-segregated particulate matter (PM) was collected in a region within the sugarcane belt of São Paulo state (Brazil), where biomass burning is still frequent, despite the phasing out of manual harvesting preceded by fire. The median of the total concentration of the 15 PAHs determined was 2.3 ± 1.8 ng m-3 (n = 19), where 63% of this content was in PM1.0. Concentrations of OPAHs and NPAHs were about an order of magnitude lower. PM2.5 collected in the dry season, when most of the fires occur, presented PAHs and OPAHs total concentrations three times higher than in the wet season, showing positive correlations with fire foci number and levoglucosan (a biomass burning marker). These results, added to the fact that biomass burning explained 65% of the data variance (PCA analysis), evidenced the importance of this practice as a source of PAHs and OPAHs to the regional atmosphere. Conversely, NPAHs appeared to be mainly derived from diesel-powered vehicles. The B[a]P equivalent concentration was estimated to be 4 times higher in the dry season than in the wet season, and was greatly increased during a local fire event. Cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of PM1.0 organic extracts were assessed using in vitro tests with human liver HepG2 cells. For both types of tests, significant toxicity was only observed for samples collected during the dry season. Persistent DNA damage that may have impaired the DNA repair system was also observed. The results indicated that there was a health risk associated with the air particulate mixture, mainly related to biomass burning, demonstrating the urgent need for better remediation actions to prevent the occurrence of burning events.

Particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in rural households burning solid fuels in Xuanwei County, Southwest China: occurrence, size distribution, and health risks

The study is about the size distribution and health risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in indoor environment of Xuanwei, Southwest China particle samples were collected by Anderson 8-stage impactor which was used to gather particle samples to nine size ranges. Size-segregated samples were collected in indoor from a rural village in Xuanwei during the non-heating and heating seasons. The results showed that the total concentrations of the indoor particulate matter (PM) were 757 ± 60 and 990 ± 78 μg/m3 in non-heating and heating seasons, respectively. The total concentration of indoor PAHs reached to 8.42 ± 0.53 μg/m3 in the heating season, which was considerably greater than the concentration in the non-heating season (2.85 ± 1.72 μg/m3). The size distribution of PAHs showed that PAHs were mainly enriched in PMs with the diameter <1.1 μm. The diagnostic ratios (DR) and principal component analysis (PCA) showed that coal and wood for residential heating and cooking were the main sources of indoor PAHs. The results of the health risk showed that the total deposition concentration (DC) in the alveolar region (AR) was 0.25 and 0.68 μg/m3 in the non-heating and heating seasons respectively. Throughout the entire sampling periods, the lifetime cancer risk (R) based on DC of children and adults varied between 3.53 ×10-5 to 1.79 ×10-4. During the heating season, the potential cancer risk of PAHs in adults was significant, exceeding 10-4, with a rate of 96%.

Association between oil spill clean-up work and thyroid cancer: Nine years of follow-up after the Hebei Spirit oil spill accident

In 2007, an unprecedented oil spill occurred in Taean, Korea. Although crude oil contains chemicals that could increase thyroid cancer risk, few studies have examined the long-term effects of oil exposure during clean-up and thyroid cancer incidence. We investigated the long-term thyroid cancer incidence among participants involved in clean-up work. 1798 participants engaged in at least two surveys since the baseline was tracked from 2008 to 2018. Participants reported the days they participated in oil clean-up works and cancer diagnoses. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate the hazard ratios between clean-up work duration and thyroid cancer. Over the 9-year follow-up, 30 thyroid cancer cases were diagnosed. A positive association was observed between clean-up duration and thyroid cancer risk. This effect was more pronounced among residents living <50 m from traffic roads. Our results indicate that crude oil clean-up work participation may increase the thyroid cancer risk.

Emissions from modern engines induce distinct effects in human olfactory mucosa cells, depending on fuel and aftertreatment

Ultrafine particles (UFP) with a diameter of ≤0.1 μm, are contributors to ambient air pollution and derived mainly from traffic emissions, yet their health effects remain poorly characterized. The olfactory mucosa (OM) is located at the rooftop of the nasal cavity and directly exposed to both the environment and the brain. Mounting evidence suggests that pollutant particles affect the brain through the olfactory tract, however, the exact cellular mechanisms of how the OM responds to air pollutants remain poorly known. Here we show that the responses of primary human OM cells are altered upon exposure to UFPs and that different fuels and engines elicit different adverse effects. We used UFPs collected from exhausts of a heavy-duty-engine run with renewable diesel (A0) and fossil diesel (A20), and from a modern diesel vehicle run with renewable diesel (Euro6) and compared their health effects on the OM cells by assessing cellular processes on the functional and transcriptomic levels. Quantification revealed all samples as UFPs with the majority of particles being ≤0.1 μm by an aerodynamic diameter. Exposure to A0 and A20 induced substantial alterations in processes associated with inflammatory response, xenobiotic metabolism, olfactory signaling, and epithelial integrity. Euro6 caused only negligible changes, demonstrating the efficacy of aftertreatment devices. Furthermore, when compared to A20, A0 elicited less pronounced effects on OM cells, suggesting renewable diesel induces less adverse effects in OM cells. Prior studies and these results suggest that PAHs may disturb the inflammatory process and xenobiotic metabolism in the OM and that UFPs might mediate harmful effects on the brain through the olfactory route. This study provides important information on the adverse effects of UFPs in a human-based in vitro model, therefore providing new insight to form the basis for mitigation and preventive actions against the possible toxicological impairments caused by UFP exposure.

Insight into personal exposure characteristics and health effects of PM2.5 and PM0.25-bound PAHs and their derivatives with different heating ways in the Fenwei Plain, China

Personal exposure (PE) to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives in particulate matter with two aerodynamic sizes of 2.5 and 0.25 μm (PM2.5 and PM0.25) from rural housewives was studied in the Fenwei Plain, China. A total of 15 households were divided into five different groups based on the type of solid fuel and heating device used, including biomass briquette-furnace (BBF), biomass-elevated Kang (BEK), outdoor lump coal-boiler (OLC), indoor briquette coal-stove (IBC), and electricity (ELE). The PE concentrations of the PAHs and biomarkers in urine collected from the participants were determined. The results showed that the PE concentrations of total quantified PAHs in the biomass group (i.e., BBF and BEK) were 2.2 and 2.0 times higher than those in the coal groups (i.e., OLC and IBC) in PM2.5 and PM0.25, respectively. The housewives who used biomass as fuel suffered from higher potential health impacts than the coal fuel users. The incremental lifetime cancer risk for the PAHs in PM2.5 in the BBF and BEK groups exceeded the international safety threshold. Furthermore, the PE concentrations of oxygenated PAH (o-PAHs) in PM2.5 and PM0.25 in the biomass groups and the nitrated PAHs (n-PAHs) in PM0.25 in the coal groups showed strong correlations with the biomarkers. The results of this study proved the associations between exposure to the different classes of PAHs and health hazards. The findings could also serve as a guideline in establishing efficient measures for using solid fuels for cooking and household warming in northern China.

Personal PM2.5-bound PAH exposure and lung function in healthy office workers: A pilot study in Beijing and Baoding, China

The effect of short-term exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on the respiratory system among healthy residents is unclear. Beijing and Baoding are typical polluted cities in China, and there is little research on PAH exposure and its health effects at the individual level. Fourteen healthy female office workers were recruited in urban Beijing and Baoding, China, in 2019. The personal exposure to fine particulate matter (PM_2.5)-bound PAHs and lung function were seasonally monitored. The relationships between PAH exposure and lung function were determined by a generalized mixed linear model. Subjects were exposed to high levels of PAH, in which the benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) level (1.26 ng/m³) was over than Chinese national indoor standard (1 ng/m³). All PAHs concentration was higher in winter than that in summer and autumn. Only benz[a]anthracene (BaA) and chrysene (Chr) exposure showed weak relations with decreased lung function, i.e., a 0.58% and 0.73% decrease in peak expiratory flow at lag 2 day, respectively (p < 0.05). PAHs may not be suitable exposure indicators for short-term change in lung function. Our findings highlight the importance of reducing PAH pollution for public respiratory health protection in heavy-polluted cities of China. This pilot study also provides experience on personal PAH assessment such as estimation of the number of repeated measurements required, which is helpful to determine the relationship between PAH exposure and health effect.

Regioselective oxidation of heterocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons catalyzed by cytochrome P450: A case study of carbazole

Recently there are increasing interests in accurately evaluating the health effects of heterocyclic PAHs. However, the activation mechanism and possible metabolites of heterocyclic PAHs catalyzed by human CYP1A1 is still elusive to a great extent. Here, leveraged to high level QM/MM calculations, the corresponding activation pathways of a representative heterocyclic PAHs, carbazole, were systematically explored. The first stage is electrophilic addition or hydrogen abstraction from N-H group. Electrophilic addition was evidenced to be more feasible and regioselectivity at C3 and C4 sites were identified. Correlations between energy barriers and key structural/electrostatic parameters reveal that O-Cα distance and Fe-O-Cα angle are the main origin for the catalytic regioselectivity. Electrophilic addition was determined as the rate-determining step and the subsequent possible reactions include epoxidation, NIH shift (the hydrogen migration from the site of hydroxylation to the adjacent carbon) and proton shuttle. The corresponding products are epoxides, ketones and hydroxylated carbazoles, respectively. The main metabolites (hydroxylated carbazoles) are estimated to be more toxic than carbazole. The regioselectivity of carbazole activated by CYP1A1 is different from the environmental processes (gas and aqueous phase). Collectively, these results will inform the in-depth understanding the metabolic processes of heterocyclic PAHs and aid the accurate evaluation of their health effects.

Formation, migration, derivation, and generation mechanism of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons during frying

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are carcinogenic and lipophilic, which can be found in frying system. This review summarized the formation, migration and derivation for PAHs, hypothesized the possible mechanism for PAHs generation during frying and presented the research prospects. Some factors like high oil consumption, high temperature, long time and oil rich in unsaturated fatty acids promoted the formation of PAHs and the presence of antioxidants inhibited the PAHs formation. The effect of proteins and carbohydrates in foods on the formation of PAHs is inconclusive. The formed PAHs were migrated into food and air. Moreover, some PAHs transformed into more toxic PAHs-derivatives during frying. The generation of PAHs may be related to low-barrier free radical-mediated reaction and the unsaturated hydrocarbons may be precursors of PAHs during frying. In future, the isotope tracer technology and on-line detection may be applied to discover intermediates and provide clues for studying PAHs generation mechanisms.

Emission characteristics and quantitative assessment of the health risks of cooking fumes during outdoor barbecuing

Given the increasing popularity of outdoor barbecue activities and the disregard for barbecue fumes, this study systematically investigated barbecue fume emission characteristics for three types of grilled meats. Particulate matter and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were continuously measured, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were isolated from the particulate matter. Cooking emission concentrations depended strongly on the type of meat being cooked. Fine particles were the main particles detected in this study. Low and medium-weight PAHs were the dominant species for all cooking experiments. The mass concentration of total VOCs in the barbecue smoke of the three groups showed significant differences (p < 0.05) and was 1667.18 ± 10.49 μg/m³ in the chicken wing group, 904.03 ± 7.12 μg/m³ in the beef steak group, and 3653.37 ± 12.22 μg/m³ in the streaky pork group. The results of risk assessment showed that the toxicity equivalent quality (TEQ) of carcinogenic PAHs in the particulate matter was significantly higher in the streaky pork group than in the chicken wing and beef steak groups. The carcinogenic risk of benzene exceeds the US EPA standard (1.0E-6) in all types of fumes. Although the hazard index (HI) was below one in all groups for noncarcinogenic risks, it was not cause of optimism. We conjecture that only 500 g of streaky pork would exceed the noncarcinogenic risk limit, and the mass required for carcinogenic risk may be less. When barbecuing, it is essential to avoid high-fat foods and strictly control the fat quantity. This study quantifies the incremental risk of specific foods to consumers and will hopefully provide insight into the hazards of barbecue fumes.

Abundance and cultivable bioaerosol transport from a municipal solid waste landfill area and its risks

Municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills, constituting the third largest anthropogenic sources of bioaerosols, are suspected to be one of the major contributors to adverse health outcomes. A regional modeling of aerosol trajectories based on wind-tunnel observations and on-site monitoring was newly-developed to uncover the impacts of a typical MSW landfill on ambient bioaerosol pollution. Results showed that the horizontal diffusion velocity of bioaerosols reached 4.33 times higher than the vertical velocity under surface calm winds. On-site monitoring revealed that the concentrations of particulate matter (PM) with a diameter of 10 μm were 3.05 times higher than those of PM1.0 in the 2.8-km downwind residential regions near the MSW landfill. With the increase in PM concentration, higher-abundance microorganisms were detected. A number of cultivable bacterial species (Micrococcus endophyticus, Micrococcus flavus, Bacillus sporothermodurans, Salmonella entericaserovar typhi, Rhodococcus hoagie, Blastococcups) and fungal species (Aspergillus niger, Penicillium, Microascus cirrosus, Cochliobolus, Stemphylium vesicarium) were identified in these bioaerosols. Furthermore, distinguished by transmission electron microscopy, a longer-range transported microorganism (E. coli) clinging onto suspended PM was observed, signifying higher exposure risks. Human health risk assessments demonstrate that the residents and occupational workers in the vicinity of MSW landfill endured atmospheric diffusion-induced bioaerosol exposure risks due to open dumping activities in MSW landfill. This study clearly indicates bioaerosol pollution from landfills, and people particularly living nearby the MSW facilities, must decrease outdoor activities during dusty days.

Physicochemical characteristics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in condensable particulate matter from coal-fired power plants: A laboratory simulation

The objective of this study was to examine the physicochemical characteristics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in condensable particulate matter (CPM) during fast condensation (within several seconds). The concentration of PAHs increased as the condensation temperature decreased, indicating that the conversion of gaseous PAHs to CPM would be enhanced at low temperatures. PAH concentrations increased in relation to the number of rings in the fragment, with the high-ring (4-,5- and 6-ring) PAHs accounting for 89.70-92.30% and 99.78-99.80% of the total concentration and total toxic equivalent of PAHs. In addition, particulate-phase PAHs (0.1-1.0 μm), developed through the synergistic effect of PAHs and fine particles, were difficult to collect by fast condensation. Inorganic fine particles could be formed when ammonia-rich conditions prevail, reducing PAH condensation further. Furthermore, CPM was morphologically and chemically characterized. During the experiment, fine and well-aggregated CPMs were detected on the membrane, and the diameter of CPMs was further enhanced by the addition of 16 PAHs. Most of the C element was collected in the rinse fluid, thus indicating that PAHs in CPM were collected through condensation. Based on these findings, basic guidelines can be provided for the control of PAHs in flue gas from coal-fired power plants.

Approaches to the source evaluation of chlorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in fine particles

Chlorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (ClPAHs) have been recognized as novel hazardous pollutants; however, the dominant sources remain unclear. This study investigates the occurrences of ClPAHs in five stages of size-segregated particles collected from an urban site and evaluates the sources and factors affecting the concentrations using organic and inorganic source tracers. ClPAHs are the most frequently detected in the finest particle fraction (less than 1.1 µm; PM1.1), similar to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), hopanes, and levoglucosan (LEV). The concentrations of total ClPAHs in PM1.1 shows a significant correlation (p < 0.05) with those of total PAHs and specific hopanes but not to LEV and biogenic fatty acids; this suggests that ClPAHs dominantly originate from industrial activities and vehicular emissions. Heatmap analysis, including source tracers, is used to categorize the possible sources of ClPAHs into three types: ClPAH-specific sources, local industrial activities and vehicular emissions, and remote industrial activities. Furthermore, correlation network analysis is used to clarify the relationships between the pollutants.

[Determination of 16 particle-phase polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in herbal incense by ultrasonic extraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and analysis of emission characteristics]

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have attracted global attention because they are carcinogens and mutagenic to humans. To date, more than 200 PAHs have been found. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has designated 16 PAH species as priority control pollutants due to their highly toxic substances. Herbal incense is frequently used in daily life. As a result, it is critical to investigate its impact on human health and environmental safety. However, research on particle-phase PAHs is very limited and inapplicable. The current research focuses mainly on bamboo incense, which has a simpler formula than herbal incense.In this study, the emission factor and emission characteristics of particle-phase PAHs from herbal incense were described. A method combining ultrasonic and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was developed for the simultaneous determination of 16 particle-phase PAHs of herbal incense. The settings for extraction solvent, ultrasonic time, and instrument analysis conditions were optimized. In the test chamber, samples were collected by burning 0.8 g of herbal incense. After combustion, PAHs adsorbing on the particles of herbal incense were collected on a quartz filter. The whole filter sample was sliced and extracted with n-hexane-dichloromethane (1∶1, v/v). A rotary evaporator was used to concentrate the extract. GC-MS was used to analyze the prepared sample. The internal standard method was used to perform quantitative analysis on the target compounds. The linearities of the 16 target PAHs were good between mass concentrations of 0.1-5.0 μg/mL, with correlation coefficients greater than 0.998. The method detection limits (MDLs) of the 16 PAHs ranged from 0.4 to 3.8 ng/g. The 0.625 μg/g and 1.25 μg/g spiked recoveries ranged from 77.4% to 99.5% and 82.0% to 101.3%, respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) of the 16 PAHs were ranged from 0.7% to 7.2% (n=6). The emission factors of particle-phase PAHs from five different kinds of herbal incense ranged from 4.60 to 11.89 μg/g. The highest concentration of phenanthrene (Phe) was found in 16 particle-phase individual PAHs of herbal incense. Fluoranthene (Flu), pyrene (Pyr), chrysene (Chr) and anthracene (Ant) concentration were ranked after Phe. The sum of these five proportions was 73.00%-89.97%. The proportion of Phe in herbal incense particle-phase PAHs was significantly higher than that of other indoor combustion sources. As a result, Phe could be used to identify individual PAHs in the particle-phase of herbal incense. The particle-phase PAHs were mainly distributed on the 3-ring and 4-ring, with a sum of 83.84% to 96.31% on the 3-ring and 4-ring. The proportion of high-molecular weight PAHs in the samples ranged from 44.25% to 63.31%. The proportion of low-molecular weight PAHs in the samples ranged from 36.69% to 55.75%. The incense source could be distinguished from other indoor combustion sources by its distinctive Phe/Flu ratio. The established method has high sensitivity, simple operation, and requires fewer samples. This method is suitable for rapidly detecting PAHs in burning incense. At the same time, it provides scientific data for further studies on the distribution and health effects of particle-phase PAHs of herbal incense.

Particle size-resolved emission characteristics of complex polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) mixtures from various combustion sources

Combustion of domestic solid fuels is a significant source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Some oxygenated PAHs (o-PAHs) and PAHs with molecular weight of 302 (MW302 PAHs) are more toxic than the traditional 16 priority PAHs, whereas their emissions were much less elucidated. This study characterized the size-dependent emissions of parent PAHs (p-PAHs), o-PAHs, and MW302 PAHs from various combustion sources. The estimated emission factors (eEFs) from biomass burning sources were highest for most of the PAHs (391-8928 μg/kg), much higher than that of anthracite coal combustion (43.0-145 μg/kg), both which were operated in an indoor stove. Cigarette smoking had a high eEF of o-PAHs (240 ng/g). MW302 PAHs were not found in the emissions of smoking, cooking, and vehicular exhausts. Particle-size distributions of PAHs were compound- and source-dependent, and the tendency to associate with smaller particles was observed especially in biomass burning and cigarette smoking sources. Furthermore, the inter-source differences in PAH eEFs were associated with their dominance in fine particles. PAH composition profiles also varied with the particle size, showing increasing contributions of large-molecule PAHs with decreasing sizes in most cases. The size distributions of p-PAHs are much more significantly dependent on their n-octanol/air partition coefficients and vapor pressures than those of o-PAHs, suggesting differences in mechanisms governing their distributions. Several molecular diagnostic ratios (MDRs), including two based on MW302 PAHs, specific to these combustion scenarios were identified. However, the MDRs within some sources are also strongly size-dependent, providing a new explanation for the uncertainty in their application for source identification of PAHs. This work also highlights the necessity for understanding the size-resolved atmospheric behaviors and fate of PAHs after their emission.

Variations in traffic-related polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in PM2.5 in Kanazawa, Japan, after the implementation of a new vehicle emission regulation

A three-year sampling campaign was conducted at a roadside air pollution monitoring station in the urban area of Kanazawa, Japan. Due to a new emission regulation, PAHs levels decreased over the sampling campaign, exhibiting values of 706 ± 413 pg/m³ in 2017, 559 ± 384 pg/m³ in 2018, and 473 ± 234 pg/m³ in 2019. In each year, similar seasonal variations in PAHs levels were observed, with higher levels observed in winter and lower levels in summer. Among the PAHs isomer ratios, we observed that the ratio of benzo[b]fluoranthene (BbF) and benzo[k]fluoranthene (BkF), [BbF]/([BbF] + [BkF]), and the ratio of indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene (IDP) and benzo[ghi]perylene (BgPe), [IDP]/([BgPe] + [IDP]), showed stability over the sampling campaign and were less affected by the new emission regulation, seasonal variations, and regional characteristics. When using the combined ratio ranges of 0.66 - 0.80 ([BbF]/([BbF] + [BkF]) and 0.26-0.49 ([IDP]/([BgPe] + [IDP]), traffic emissions were clearly distinguished from other PAHs emission sources. Principal component analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) were also performed to further analyse the characteristics of traffic-related PAHs. Overall, this study affirmed the effectiveness of the new emission regulation in the reduction of PAHs emissions and provided a combined range for identifying PAHs traffic emission sources.

A simple device for simulating skin adsorption of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: design and application

Dermal exposure is one of the main ways of human body exposure to atmospheric contaminants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The skin type significantly affects the skin adsorption of contaminants. However, this is commonly ignored in assessing the dermal exposure based on the atmospheric concentrations of contaminants. In this study, a simulation device suitable for human dermal pollutant exposure assessment was established, which used polyethylene balloons coated with different doses of glycerol trioleate to simulate oily skin, neutral skin, and dry skin type. The sampling effectiveness of the device was verified, and the device was applied to the skin exposure assessment of atmospheric PAHs at different scenarios. Kinetic experiments indicated a linear adsorption within 6 h. The adsorption kinetic constants (k) of PAHs on the oily surface of the balloon were significantly higher than those on the dry surface, especially for PAHs with high ring numbers. Compared with the calculated skin adsorption based on atmospheric concentrations, the results of this simulation device can better simulate the skin adsorption of atmospheric contaminants on different skin types and in different scenarios. Based on the result of balloon sampling, the dermal exposure of PAH_{3 rings} by oily skin inside the tunnel is up to 5.668 ng/cm²/day, indicating a non-negligible health risk.

Atmospheric concentration, spatial variations, and source identification of persistent organic pollutants in urban and semi-urban areas using passive air samplers in Bursa, Turkey

In this study, the concentration of ambient persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were measured for 12 months in urban and semi-urban areas using a passive air sampler. During the sampling period, a total of 14 PAH (∑₁₄PAH) concentrations measured in urban and semi-urban areas were found to be 54.4 ± 22.6 ng/m³ and 51.7 ± 34.3 ng/m³, respectively. Molecular diagnostic ratios (MDRs) were used to determine PAH sources. According to the MDR values, combustion sources were the most important PAH sources in both sampling areas. However, since the urban area is close to the industrial zone, the combustion sources occurred at high temperatures (> 800 °C), while the sources in the semi-urban area generally consisted of petrogenic fuel combustion. ∑₅₀PCB concentrations measured in the urban and semi-urban areas were found to be 522.5 ± 196.9 pg/m³ and 439.5 ± 166.6 pg/m³, respectively. Homologous group distributions were used to determine the source of PCBs. According to the homologous group distributions, tri-, tetra-, and penta-chlorinated PCBs were dominant in both sampling areas. ∑₁₀OCP concentrations measured in urban and semi-urban areas were found as 242.5 ± 104.6 pg/m³ and 275.9 ± 130.9 pg/m³, respectively. Also, α-HCH/γ-HCH and β-/(α + γ)-HCH ratios were used to determine the source of OCPs. Lindane was the predominant OCP in both sampling areas.

Dynamics and Mass Balance of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in and Around the Seto Inland Sea, Japan

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed to elucidate the distribution, ecological risk, pathways, and fluxes of these pollutants in and around the Seto Inland Sea, an industrialized coastal region of Japan. High molecular weight PAHs (5-6 rings) were primarily found in regions close to the bay estuaries, and their proportions decreased at distances further from the estuaries (offshore areas), where low molecular weight PAHs (2-4 rings) were more ubiquitous. Screening-level risk assessments revealed that the PAHs found in the sediments should have no adverse effects on benthic communities. A mass balance for PAHs in the Seto Inland Sea, calculated based on data collected in the field and published literature findings, showed the PAH flux into the Seto Inland Sea from atmospheric deposition were ca. 6 times higher than that from riverine inflows. Comparison of the amount of the PAH mass flux between the Seto Inland Sea and the sea of the Europe and Asian countries indicated that the Seto Inland Sea is less polluted than the Gulf of Lion, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Bohai Sea, China and more polluted than the Yellow Sea. This paper is the first to determine the fluxes of PAHs in the coastal region of Japan.

Characteristics and Influencing Factors of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Emitted from Open Burning and Stove Burning of Biomass: A Brief Review

To mitigate global warming and achieve carbon neutrality, biomass has become a widely used carbon-neutral energy source due to its low cost and easy availability. However, the incomplete combustion of biomass can produce polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are harmful to human health. Moreover, increasing numbers of wildfires in many regions caused by global warming have greatly increased the emissions of PAHs from biomass burning. To effectively mitigate PAH pollution and health risks associated with biomass usage, the concentrations, compositions and influencing factors of PAH emissions from biomass burning are summarized in this review. High PAH emissions from open burning and stove burning are found, and two- to four-ring PAHs account for a higher proportion than five- and six-ring PAHs. Based on the mechanism of biomass burning, biomass with higher volatile matter, cellulose, lignin, potassium salts and moisture produces more PAHs. Moreover, burning biomass in stoves at a high temperature or with an insufficient oxygen supply can increase PAH emissions. Therefore, the formation and emission of PAHs can be reduced by pelletizing, briquetting or carbonizing biomass to increase its density and burning efficiency. This review contributes to a comprehensive understanding of PAH pollution from biomass burning, providing prospective insight for preventing air pollution and health hazards associated with carbon neutrality.

PM-Bound Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Nitro-Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in the Ambient Air of Vladivostok: Seasonal Variation, Sources, Health Risk Assessment and Long-Term Variability

Total suspended particles (TSP) were collected in Vladivostok, Russia, which is a typical port city. This study investigated the concentration, potential sources, and long-term variation in particle PAHs and NPAHs in the atmosphere of Vladivostok. The PAH and NPAH concentrations were higher in winter than in summer (PAHs: winter: 18.6 ± 9.80 ng/m³ summer: 0.54 ± 0.21 ng/m³; NPAHs: winter: 143 ± 81.5 pg/m³ summer: 143 ± 81.5 pg/m³). The diagnostic ratios showed that PAHs and NPAHs mainly came from vehicle emissions in both seasons, while heating systems were the main source of air pollution in winter. The TEQ assessment values were 2.90 ng/m³ and 0.06 ng/m³ in winter and summer, respectively, suggesting a significant excess cancer risk in the general population in winter. The ILCR values conveyed a potential carcinogenic risk because the value was between 1 × 10⁻⁵ and 1 × 10⁻⁷ and ingestion was a main contributor in Vladivostok. However, it is worth noting that the concentrations of PAHs and NPAHs showed an overall downward trend from 1999 to 2020. An important reason for this is the cogenerations project implemented by the Far Eastern Center for Strategic Research on Fuel and Energy Complex Development in 2010. This research clarified the latest variations in PAHs and NPAHs to provide continuous observation data for future chemical reaction or model prediction research.

Degradation of pyrene using single-chamber air-cathode microbial fuel cells: Electrochemical parameters and bacterial community changes

Pyrene, a typical four-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, is abundantly present in the environment and is potentially harmful to the human body. In this study, single-chamber air-cathode microbial fuel cells (MFCs) were used to treat pyrene, and the ensuing degradation, electrical parameters, and microbial changes were analyzed. The results showed that MFCs could degrade pyrene, and the maximum degradation rate for 30 mg/L reached 88.1 ± 5.4%. The addition of pyrene reduced the electrical performance of the MFCs and suppressed the power output. Analysis of the anodic microbial community showed that the proportion of Alcaligenes and Stenotrophomonas increased with an increase in pyrene concentration, which may explain the high degradation rate of pyrene.

Cryoconites as biogeochemical markers of anthropogenic impact in high mountain regions: analysis of polyaromatic pollutants in soil-like bodies

The globalisation and omnidirectional character of anthropogenic processes has challenged scientists around the world to estimate the harmful effects of these processes on ecosystems and human health. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is one the most infamous group of contaminants, originated both from natural and anthropogenic processes. They could transport to high latitudes and altitudes through atmospheric long-distance transfer and further enter ecosystems of these vulnerable regions by deposition on terrestrial surfaces. An interesting object for tracking transboundary contamination processes in high mountain ecosystems is called cryoconite. Cryoconite, a dark-coloured supraglacial sediment which is abundant in polar and mountain environments, is considered as a storage of various pollutants, including PAHs. Thus, it may pose a risk for local human health and ecosystem through short-distance transfer. Studied cryoconite sediments were collected at the surface of Skhelda and Garabashi glaciers, Central Caucasus high-mountain region, as well as mudflow, moraine material and local soils at the Baksan Gorge in order to examine levels of their contamination. We analysed the content of 15 priority polyaromatic compounds from the US EPA list and used the method of calculation of PAHs isomer ratios with the purpose of identifying their source. To estimate their potential toxicity, Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) equivalents were calculated. Maximum concentration was defined for NAP (84 ng×g-1), PHE (40 ng×g-1) and PYR (47 ng×g-1), with the minimum concentration for ANT (about 1 ng×g-1). The most polluted material is a cryoconite from Garabashi glacier because of local anthropogenic activities and long-distance transfer. High-molecular weight PAHs are dominated in PAHs composition of almost all samples. The most common sources of PAHs in studied materials are combustion processes and mixed pyrolytic/petrogenic origin. Toxicity levels of separate PAHs did not exceed the maximum permissible threshold concentrations values in most cases. However, the sum of PAHs in BaP equivalents exceed the threshold values in all samples, in some of them more than twice.

Characteristics of PM and PAHs emitted from a coal-fired boiler and the efficiencies of its air pollution control devices

Sampling and analysis of filterable particulate matter (FPM), FPM_2.5, condensable particulate matter (CPM), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), sulfur oxides (SO_x), and nitrogen oxides (NO_x) emitted from a coal-fired boiler equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR)+ electrostatic precipitator (ESP) + wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) + wet electrostatic precipitator (WESP) as air pollution control devices (APCDs) are conducted. The results show that NO_x concentration emitted from the coal-fired boiler is 56 ± 2.17 ppm (with the NO_x removal efficiency of 47.2%), which does not meet the best available control technology (BACT) emission standard (≤ 30 ppm). On the other hand, the WFGD adopted has a good removal efficiency for SO_x and HCl. Both SO_x and HCl emission concentrations are < 1 ppm, and removal efficiencies are > 99%. The FPM and FPM_2.5 emitted from the coal-fired boiler are 0.9 ± 0.06 mg/Nm³ and < 0.09 ± 0.006 mg/Nm³, respectively. The overall removal efficiency of FPM achieved with ESP+WFGD+WESP+MGGH is 99.98%. However, high concentration of CPM (37.4 ± 6.3 mg/Nm³) is measured, which is significantly higher than FPM and FPM_2.5. The concentrations of 27 PAHs at the WESP inlet and stack are measured as 667 ng/Nm³ and 547 ng/Nm³, respectively while the removal efficiencies of gas- and solid-phase PAHs are 9% and 58%, respectively. The results show that APCDs adopted are not effective in removing PAHs (only 18%), and gas-phase PAHs contribute the most in the total PAH emission. In addition, the benzo(a)pyrene equivalent (BaP_eq) concentration emitted from the stack is 28.8 ng-BaP_eq/Nm³, and most of it is contributed by 4-6 ring PAHs with high toxic equivalent factors (TEFs). Furthermore, the emission factors of air pollutant emitted from coal-fired boilers equipped with different combinations of APCDs are compiled and compared. The results show that except for CPM and NO_x, the emission factors of air pollutant calculated for this coal-fired boiler are lower if compared with other studies.Implications: Primary particles discharged from coal-fired processes include filterable particulate matter (FPM) and condensable particulate matter (CPM). PM_2.5 emissions would be greatly underestimated if CPM is ignored. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) formed by two or more fused benzene rings. PAHs have attracted much public attention because of toxicity and carcinogenicity. This study selects one coal-fired boiler with the best available control technology (BACT) to simultaneously measure the concentrations of PM, PAHs, and gaseous pollutants at the inlet and outlet of air pollution control devices (APCDs) to understand the efficacy of APCDs adopted and pollutant emission intensity.

Insights Into Mechanism of the Naphthalene-Enhanced Biodegradation of Phenanthrene by Pseudomonas sp. SL-6 Based on Omics Analysis

The existence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in contaminated environment is multifarious. At present, studies of metabolic regulation focus on the degradation process of single PAH. The global metabolic regulatory mechanisms of microorganisms facing coexisting PAHs are poorly understood, which is the major bottleneck for efficient bioremediation of PAHs pollution. Naphthalene (NAP) significantly enhanced the biodegradation of phenanthrene (PHE) by Pseudomonas sp. SL-6. To explore the underlying mechanism, isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification (iTRAQ) labeled quantitative proteomics was used to characterize the differentially expressed proteins of SL-6 cultured with PHE or NAP + PHE as carbon source. Through joint analysis of proteome and genome, unique proteins were identified and quantified. The up-regulated proteins mainly concentrated in PAH catabolism, Transporters and Electron transfer carriers. In the process, the regulator NahR, activated by salicylate (intermediate of NAP-biodegradation), up-regulates degradation enzymes (NahABCDE and SalABCDEFGH), which enhances the biodegradation of PHE and accumulation of toxic intermediate–1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (1H2Na); 1H2Na stimulates the expression of ABC transporter, which maintains intracellular physiological activity by excreting 1H2Na; the up-regulation of cytochrome C promotes the above process running smoothly. Salicylate works as a trigger that stimulates cell to respond globally. The conjecture was verified at transcriptional and metabolic levels. These new insights contribute to improving the overall understanding of PAHs-biodegradation processes under complex natural conditions, and promoting the application of microbial remediation technology for PAHs pollution.

Source Apportionment of Fine Organic Particulate Matter (PM2.5) in Central Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

The development of infrastructure, a rapidly increasing population, and urbanization has resulted in increasing air pollution levels in the African city of Addis Ababa. Prior investigations into air pollution have not yet sufficiently addressed the sources of atmospheric particulate matter. This study aims to identify the major sources of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and its seasonal contribution in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Twenty-four-hour average PM2.5 mass samples were collected every 6th day, from November 2015 through November 2016. Chemical species were measured in samples and source apportionment was conducted using a chemical mass balance (CMB) receptor model that uses particle-phase organic tracer concentrations to estimate source contributions to PM2.5 organic carbon (OC) and the overall PM2.5 mass. Vehicular sources (28%), biomass burning (18.3%), plus soil dust (17.4%) comprise about two-thirds of the PM2.5 mass, followed by sulfate (6.5%). The sources of air pollution vary seasonally, particularly during the main wet season (June-September) and short rain season (February-April): From motor vehicles, (31.0 ± 2.6%) vs. (24.7 ± 1.2%); biomass burning, (21.5 ± 5%) vs. (14 ± 2%); and soil dust, (11 ± 6.4%) vs. (22.7 ± 8.4%), respectively, are amongst the three principal sources of ambient PM2.5 mass in the city. We suggest policy measures focusing on transportation, cleaner fuel or energy, waste management, and increasing awareness on the impact of air pollution on the public's health.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in five East Asian cities: Seasonal characteristics, health risks, and yearly variations

Total suspended particulate matter and fine particulate matter were collected in five East Asian cities (Sapporo, Sagamihara, Kirishima, Shenyang, and Vladivostok) during warm and cold periods from 2017 to 2018. Nine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and three nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) were detected by high-performance liquid chromatography with a fluorescence detector. The average concentrations of ∑PAHs and ∑NPAHs differed significantly both temporally and spatially and were the lowest in Kirishima during the warm period (∑PAHs: 0.11 ± 0.06 ng m^-3; ∑NPAHs: 1.23 ± 0.96 pg m^-3) and the highest in Shenyang during the cold period (∑PAHs: 49.7 ± 21.8 ng m^-3; ∑NPAHs: 357 ± 180 pg m^-3). The average total benzo[a]pyrene-equivalent concentrations were also higher in Shenyang and Vladivostok than in Japanese cities. According to the results of source apportionment, traffic emissions impacted these cities in both the warm and cold periods, whereas coal combustion-generated effects were obvious in Shenyang and Vladivostok during the cold period. Furthermore, PAHs and NPAHs originating from the Asian continent, including Shenyang and Vladivostok, exerted some influence on Japanese cities, especially in the cold period. Compared to Japanese cities and Vladivostok, yearly variations in ∑PAHs and 1-nitropyrene in Shenyang showed that their concentrations were considerably lower than those reported in past studies, indicating the positive effects of air pollutant control policies in China. These results not only describe the current characteristics and yearly variations of PAHs and NPAHs in typical urban cities in East Asia but also, more importantly, reveal that the effects of the East Asian monsoon play an important role in the analysis of atmospheric behaviours of PAHs and NPAHs. Furthermore, this study supports the role of multinational cooperation to promote air pollution control in East Asia.

Emission factors, characteristics, and gas-particle partitioning of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in PM2.5 emitted for the typical solid fuel combustions in rural Guanzhong Plain, China

Solid fuel is a the most dominant energy source for household usages in developing countries. In this study, emission characteristics on organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC) and fifty-two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in gaseous and particulate phases from seven fuel-stove combinations were studied in a typical rural village in northwest China. For the PAHs, the highest gaseous and particulate phase emission factors (EFs) were both observed for bituminous coal with one-stage stoves, ranging from 459 ± 154 to 1.09 ± 0.36 × 10³ mg kg^-1. In contrast, the PAHs EFs for the clean briquette coal with two-stage stoves were two orders of magnitude lower than those of the bituminous coals. For parent PAHs (pPAHs) and total quantified PAHs (∑PAHs), they mainly contributed in gaseous phases with compositions of 69-79% and 64-70%, respectively. The gas-to-particle partitioning was mostly governed by the absorption. Moreover, the correlation coefficient (r) between EC and ∑PAHs, OC and parent PAHs (pPAHs), OC and nitro PAHs (nPAHs) were 0.81, 0.67 and 0.85, respectively, supporting that the PAHs species were potential precursors to the EC formation during the solid fuel combustion. The correlation analyses in this study further deduced that the formations of pPAHs and nPAHs were more closely related to that of OC than alkylated PAHs (aPAHs) and oxygenated PAHs (oPAHs). Diagnostic ratios of selective PAHs were calculated and evaluated as well. Among those, the ratio of retene (RET)/[RET + chyrene (CHR)] was found to be an efficient tool to distinguish coal combustion and biomass burning. In general, it was found that the amounts of pollutant emissions from clean briquette coal combustion were definitely lower than those from bituminous coal and biomass combustions. It is thus necessary to introduce and recommend the use of cleaner briquette coal as energy source.

A review on analysis methods, source identification, and cancer risk evaluation of atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have gained attention because of their environmental persistence and effects on ecosystems, animals, and human health. They are mutagenic, carcinogenic, and teratogenic. The review provides background knowledge about their sources, metabolism, temporal variations, and size distribution in atmospheric particulate matter. The review article briefly discusses the analytical methods suitable for the extraction, characterization, and quantification of nonpolar and polar PAHs, addressing the challenges. Herein, we discussed the molecular diagnostic ratios (DRs), stable carbon isotopic analysis (SCIA), and receptor models, with much emphasis on the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, for apportioning PAH sources. Among which, DRs and PCA identified as the most widely employed method, but their accuracy for PAH source identification has received global criticism. Therefore, the review recommends compound-specific isotopic analysis (CSIA) and PMF as the best alternative methods to provide detailed qualitative and quantitative source analysis. The compound-specific isotopic signatures are not affected by environmental degradation and are considered promising for apportioning PAH sources. However, isotopic fractions of co-eluted compounds like polar PAHs and aliphatic hydrocarbons make the PAHs isotopic fractions interpretation difficult. The interference of unresolved complex mixtures is a limitation to the application of CSIA for PAH source apportionment. Hence, for CSIA to further support PAH source apportionment, fast and cost-effective purification techniques with no isotopic fractionation effects are highly desirable. The present review explains the concept of stable carbon isotopic analysis (SCIA) relevant to PAH source analysis, identifying the techniques suitable for sample extract purification. We demonstrate how the source apportioned PAHs can be applied in assessing the health risk of PAHs using the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) model, and in doing so, we identify the key factors that could undermine the accuracy of the ILCR and research gaps that need further investigation.

Investigation on removal effects and condensation characteristics of condensable particulate matter: Field test and experimental study

Condensable particulate matter (CPM) has become the main part of the total primary PM emitted from stationary sources and has aroused increasing concern. In this work, the removal effects of wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) on CPM components were studied. A new CPM-containing flue gas system was designed and used to investigate the condensation characteristics of 16 PAHs, sulfuric acid mist and SO₂ conversion into CPM. Some interesting results were obtained and include the following: (i) The removal efficiencies of WFGD on both CPM inorganic and organic fraction reached 81.0% and 67.3%, respectively. (ii) The removal efficiency data obtained for C₂₁-C₂₉ and 5-ring PAHs revealed that organic components with high boiling points and low volatility in CPM are easily removed by WFGD. Condensation experimental results indicated that the condensation ratios of PAHs generally increased with the number of fused benzene rings, while the increase of flue gas moisture content might inhibit the conversion of PAHs into CPM. (iii) The concentrations of SO₄^2-, Ca, and Na accounted for 48.7% of CPM inorganic fraction after desulfurization, while Ca was barely removed by WFGD. Condensation experiments indicated that most SO₄^2- in CPM arose from sulfuric acid mist, rather than from sulfate aerosols. Note that only <20% of the sulfuric acid mist belonged to the CPM category, which might help to develop specialized deep purification strategy for SO₃. In addition, SO₂ could cause a high positive bias for the CPM field test although its condensation ratio was only 2.7%. This work provides a basic reference for subsequent CPM formation and reduction researches.

Organic petrographic evaluation of carbonaceous material in sediments of the Kinnickinnic River, Milwaukee, WI, U.S.A

This study examines the use of organic petrology techniques to quantify the amount of coal and carbonaceous combustion by-products (i.e., coke, coal tar/pitch, cenospheres) in sediments taken from the Kinnickinnic River adjacent to the former site of the Milwaukee Solvay Coke and Gas Company. These materials are of concern as contaminants like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are known to readily adsorb to coal and combustion byproducts. Kinnickinnic River sediment samples (n = 36) ranging in depth (1-11 ft.) were collected from eight core locations to quantify and characterize carbonaceous material in the sediments. To determine the amount (vol%) of organic particulates, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) modified the existing ASTM D2799 using the following categories: coal, coke, coal tar/pitch, inertinite organics, plant material, cenospheres, and mineral matter. Coal fragments were subdivided by rank using vitrinite reflectance (R_o, %) and organic components were further subdivided into the size fractions of coarse (250-1000 μm), fine (63-250 μm), and very fine (<63 μm). Of the 36 samples analyzed, concentrations of coal, coke, and coal tar/pitch ranged from 0 to 18.2 vol%, 0 to 32.0 vol%, and 0 to 2.6 vol%, respectively, with the highest concentrations occurring near point sources (e.g. discharge pipe and coal unloading operations). Samples that were furthest upstream and downstream from the Solvay site exhibited a marked decrease in particulate organics, with exception of one upstream location which had 19.8 vol% coke. Overall, the modified ASTM method provided a means to quantify the abundance of carbonaceous material present in the sediments. Petrography and total PAH concentrations did not provide a clear correlation to organic matter type or size fraction but the samples with the highest vol% organic matter in each core generally corresponded to the sample with the highest bulk PAH content.

Characteristics and unique sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in PM2.5 at a highland background site in northwestern China☆

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitro-PAHs (NPAHs) in PM_2.5 were first observed at a background site (Yuzhong site: YZ site) in the northwestern highlands of China in five seasonal campaigns. Compared with major northwestern cities, PAHs and NPAHs at the YZ site were at a lower level but showed consistent seasonal differences. The PAH and NPAH concentrations peaked in the winter campaigns, which were 36.11 ± 6.54 ng/m³ and 418.11 ± 123.55 pg/m³, respectively, in winter campaign 1 and 28.97 ± 10.07 ng/m³ and 226.89 ± 133.54 pg/m³, respectively, in winter campaign 2. These values were approximately a dozen times larger those in other campaigns. The diagnostic ratios indicate that vehicle emissions were the primary source of the PAHs throughout the five campaigns, and coal and biomass combustion also contributed during the winter, summer, and fall campaigns. Among NPAHs, 2-nitrofluoranthene and 2-nitropyrene were generated through OH radical-initiated reactions during atmospheric transport, while 1-nitropyrene came from combustion sources. There is an observation worth pondering, which is that the ratio between pyrene and fluoranthene increased abnormally in the spring and fall campaigns, which is presumably caused by the burning of Tibetan barley straw in the northwestern highlands. The backward trajectories over Tibetan areas in Qinghai and southwestern Gansu are consistent with this hypothesis. In addition, this study reported for the first time that the burning of Tibetan barley straw has become a seasonal contributor to air pollution in northwestern China and is participating in the atmospheric transport of air pollutants driven by the monsoon in East Asia, which urgently requires further research.

Assessing Approaches of Human Inhalation Exposure to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons: A Review

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of important organic pollutants widely emitted from anthropogenic activities, with a general distribution in the gas and particulate phases. Some PAHs are carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic. Inhalation exposure to PAHs is correlated with adverse health outcomes in the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Thus, it is significant to determine the exposure level of the general population. This study summarizes the evaluation methods for PAH exposure, focusing on different exposure parameters. External exposure can be determined via the collection of the environmental pollution concentration through active samplers or passive samplers during environmental monitoring or personal sampling. Time-activity patterns give critical exposure information that captures the exposure period, origin, and behaviors. Modeling is a labor-less approach for human exposure estimation, and microenvironmental exposure requires specific research. It is important to select appropriate methods to quantify the exposure level to provide accurate data to establish the exposure–risk relationship and make scientific suggestions for the protection of public health.

Exposure to Atmospheric Particulate Matter-Bound Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Their Health Effects: A Review

Particulate matter (PM) is a major factor contributing to air quality deterioration that enters the atmosphere as a consequence of various natural and anthropogenic activities. In PM, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) represent a class of organic chemicals with at least two aromatic rings that are mainly directly emitted via the incomplete combustion of various organic materials. Numerous toxicological and epidemiological studies have proven adverse links between exposure to particulate matter-bound (PM-bound) PAHs and human health due to their carcinogenicity and mutagenicity. Among human exposure routes, inhalation is the main pathway regarding PM-bound PAHs in the atmosphere. Moreover, the concentrations of PM-bound PAHs differ among people, microenvironments and areas. Hence, understanding the behaviour of PM-bound PAHs in the atmosphere is crucial. However, because current techniques hardly monitor PAHs in real-time, timely feedback on PAHs including the characteristics of their concentration and composition, is not obtained via real-time analysis methods. Therefore, in this review, we summarize personal exposure, and indoor and outdoor PM-bound PAH concentrations for different participants, spaces, and cities worldwide in recent years. The main aims are to clarify the characteristics of PM-bound PAHs under different exposure conditions, in addition to the health effects and assessment methods of PAHs.

Atmospheric Behaviour of Polycyclic and Nitro-Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Water-Soluble Inorganic Ions in Winter in Kirishima, a Typical Japanese Commercial City

Kirishima is a typical Japanese commercial city, famous for frequent volcanic activity. This is the first study to determine the characteristics of PM2.5-bound polycyclic and nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs and NPAHs) and water-soluble inorganic ions (WSIIs) in this city. In this study, the non-volcanic eruption period was taken as the target and daily PM2.5 samples were collected from 24 November to 21 December 2016. The daily concentrations in PM2.5 of ƩPAHs, ƩNPAHs, and ƩWSIIs ranged from 0.36 to 2.90 ng/m3, 2.12 to 22.3 pg/m3, and 1.96 to 11.4 μg/m3, respectively. Through the results of the diagnostic ratio analyses of the PAHs, NPAHs, and WSIIs and the backward trajectory analysis of the air masses arriving in Kirishima, the emission sources of PAHs, NPAHs, and WSIIs in PM2.5 in Kirishima were influenced by the coal burning that came from the East Asian continent, although there was no influence from volcanic emission sources during the sampling period. The total benzo[a]pyrene (BaP)-equivalent concentration was lower than many other cities but the health risks in Kirishima were nonetheless notable. These findings are very important for future research on PM samples during the inactive Asian monsoon and volcanic eruption periods, to further understand the characteristics of air pollutants in Kirishima, and to contribute to the improvement in health of residents and a reduction in the atmospheric circulation of air pollutants in East Asia.

Yearly variation in characteristics and health risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and nitro-PAHs in urban shanghai from 2010-2018

This study encompassed the regular observation of nine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and three nitro-PAHs (NPAHs) in particulate matter (PM) in Shanghai in summer and winter from 2010 to 2018. The results showed that the mean concentrations of ƩPAHs in summer decreased by 24.7% in 2013 and 18.1% in 2017 but increased by 10.2% in 2015 compared to the data in 2010. However, the mean concentrations of ƩPAHs in winter decreased by 39.7% from 2010 (12.8 ± 4.55 ng/m³) to 2018 (7.72 ± 3.33 ng/m³), and the mean concentrations of 1-nitropyrene in winter decreased by 79.0% from 2010 (42.3 ± 16.1 pg/m³) to 2018 (8.90 ± 2.09 pg/m³). Correlation analysis with meteorological conditions revealed that the PAH and NPAH concentrations were both influenced by ambient temperature. The diagnostic ratios of PAHs and factor analysis showed that they were mainly affected by traffic emissions with some coal and/or biomass combustion. The ratio of 2-nitrofluoranthene to 2-nitropyrene was near 10, which indicated that the OH radical-initiated reaction was the main pathway leading to their secondary formation. Moreover, backward trajectories revealed different air mass routes in each sampling period, indicating a high possibility of source effects from the northern area in winter in addition to local and surrounding influences. Meanwhile, the mean total benzo[a]pyrene-equivalent concentrations in Shanghai in winter decreased by 50.8% from 2010 (1860 ± 645 pg/m³) to 2018 (916 ± 363 pg/m³). These results indicated the positive effects of the various policies and regulations issued by Chinese authorities.

Particulate bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons over Dhauladhar region of the north-western Himalayas

A systematic yearlong study was carried out in Dhauladhar region of the North-Western Himalayas to investigate dynamics in the composition and concentration of particulate bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their source(s) activity. PM₁₀ samples were collected for 24 h, once every week during January 2015-January 2016, at an urban mid-altitude site (Dharamshala) and a rural low-altitude site (Pohara). PAHs were identified and quantified using high performance liquid chromatography coupled with UV-detector. Seasonal average concentration of total PAHs followed a pattern: Summer > Winter > Autumn > Spring in the region. Seasonal average values of molecular diagnostic ratios indicated significant contribution from non-traffic (biomass burning and coal combustion) sources also during winter and spring season, whereas, traffic emissions (gasoline and diesel) were the dominant source at both the locations throughout the year in the region. The Principal Component Analysis deciphered a) emissions from gasoline driven vehicles b) diesel engine exhaust emissions c) biomass/wood burning source d) coal combustion and e) waste incineration and burning of oil/tar as major sources of PAHs in the region. Annual mean values of total Benzo(a)Pyrene Equivalent were much higher than 1 ng.m-3 over both the locations indicating higher lung cancer risk to the people living in this part of the Himalayas.
