Novel nanofibers mat as an efficient, fast and reusable adsorbent for solid phase extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in environmental water

Hydrophilic molecularly imprinted resin-hexagonal boron nitride composite as a new adsorbent for selective extraction and determination of a carcinoid tumor biomarker in urine

BACKGROUND

The detection of disease biomarkers in biological samples plays an important role in early diagnosis and treatment of carcinoid tumor. However, due to the complexity of biological samples and the extremely low concentration of disease biomarkers, sample pretreatment is still the bottleneck of achieving accurate quantitative determination. In this work, new hydrophilic molecularly imprinted resin-hexagonal boron nitride (HMIR-h-BN) composites were developed and used as a new solid phase extraction (SPE) adsorbent for selective detection of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), a biomarker of carcinoid tumor, in urine.

RESULTS

Twenty-two types of HMIR-h-BN were successfully synthesized through growing hydrophilic molecularly imprinted resin on surface of activated two-dimensional h-BN nanosheets, and preparation parameters affecting the adsorption performance of HMIR-h-BN were investigated and optimized through adsorption experiments. HMIR-h-BN #19 (the ratio of resorcinol to hexamethylenetetramine: 6:3; the dosage of h-BN: 300 mg; the dosage of dummy template: 0.12 mmol; the imprinting time: 4 h) has demonstrated to be the optimal material for efficient separation and extraction of 5-HIAA. Combined with HPLC-UV, the limit of detection and the limit of quantification of 5-HIAA in real urine samples were 9.4 ng mL-1 and 31.3 ng mL-1, respectively, the coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.9996 in the linear range of 0.1-300 μg mL-1 and the relative recoveries ranged from 86.9 % to 97.7 % with RSD ≤5.1 %. Moreover, after being processed by HMIR-h-BN-SPE, there are no interferences from other peaks at the peak position of 5-HIAA.

SIGNIFICANCE

The HMIR-h-BN composite has been demonstrated to be capable of selective extraction of 5-HIAA from urine samples and have a significant purification effect. Based on the established HMIR-h-BN-SPE-HPLC-UV method, accurate quantitative determination of 5-HIAA in urine samples was achieved, which is expected to be applied in the early diagnostic of carcinoid tumor.

Comparison of ZrO2 Particles and Polyaniline as Additives in Polystyrene-Based Sorbents for the Micro-Solid Phase Extraction of Psychoactive Drugs from Biofluids

The intensive development of extraction methods based on μ-SPE extraction contributes to the increased interest in the synthesis of new sorption materials. This work presents the characterization of polystyrene fibers and polystyrene fibers blended with ZrO2 particles or polyaniline obtained by electrospinning and their use in the extraction of selected psychoactive drugs from biological samples. The characteristic of produced fibers is made by performing SEM images, measuring average fiber diameter, and examining their sorption abilities. Among the fibers based on pure polystyrene, tested in the first stage, the best sorption properties are demonstrated for the fibers obtained from a polystyrene solution in DMF with a concentration of 17.5 wt%. In the next stage, this material was modified with synthesized ZrO2 particles and polyaniline. Among the tested materials, the sorbent based on polystyrene with polyaniline shows the best sorption properties of the tested substances. The use of this material in the μ-SPE in a needle enables the extraction of selected compounds from aqueous and biological samples such as urine and human plasma.

Simple, fast and eco-friendly micro-solid phase extraction based on thiol and ionic liquid bi-functional nanofibers membrane for the determination of sulfonamides in environmental water

BACKGROUND

Sulfonamides (SAs) are a class of synthetic antibacterial agents that are diffusely used in the medical industry and animal husbandry. Their prevalence in the influents and effluents of water treatment plants, as well as in rivers and groundwater, has provoked worldwide concern. Monitoring SAs in environmental water is of great significance for public health. However, most of the available detection techniques for SAs are cumbersome and time-consuming. With the increasing number of actual samples, simple, fast and environmentally friendly analytical methods are always in demand.

RESULTS

Herein, we describe a highly efficient micro-solid phase extraction (μ-SPE) sample preparation technique based on a novel thiol and ionic liquid bi-functional nanofibers membrane (IL-SH-PAN NFsM) for multi-residue detection of sulfonamides (SAs) in water samples. By the synergistic effect of -SH and -IL, the as-prepared IL-SH-PAN NFsM demonstrated high adsorption capacity and excellent selectivity for SAs. The water samples can be directly used for μ-SPE without pH and ionic strength adjustment, and the eluent can be directly collected for HPLC-MS/MS analysis. Compared with other methods reported in the literature, this method required much shorter extraction time (2 min for a batch), much less amount of adsorbent (4.0 mg) and organic solvent (0.5 mL), while providing much higher sensitivity (1.4-3.9 ng L-1), and fine recoveries (88.8%-117.7%) with relative standard deviations less than 4.26%.

SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY

A bi-functional nanofibers membrane was prepared for efficient extraction of SAs. The adsorbent exhibited superior adsorption performance and excellent selectivity. The underlying interaction mechanisms derived from -SH and -IL were proposed, which provide a new idea for preparing versatile adsorbents. Rapid, efficient and sensitive detection of SAs in water was achieved. The novel sample preparation technique can be expected as an efficient method for routine trace SAs residue monitoring in various water samples.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the environment: Updates on pretreatment and determination methods

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used in human and animal health care to reduce persistent inflammation, pain and fever because of their anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic effects. However, the improper discharge and disposal make it becomes a major contaminant in the environment, which poses a big threat to the ecosystem. For this reason, accurate, sensitive, effective, green, and economic techniques are urgently required and have been rapidly developed in recent years. This review summarizes the advancement of sample preparation technologies for NSAIDs involving solid-phase extraction, solid-phase microextraction, liquid-phase microextraction, QuEChERS, and matrix solid-phase dispersion. Meanwhile, we overview and compare analytical technologies for NSAIDs, including liquid chromatography-based methods, gas chromatography-based methods, capillary electrophoresis, and sensors, particularly the development of liquid chromatography-based methods. Furthermore, we focus on their progress and conduct a comparison between their advantages and disadvantages.

Efficient adsorptive removal of aminoglycoside antibiotics from environmental water

Aminoglycoside antibiotics (AGs) in environmental water are emerging pollutants that must be removed to protect human health and the ecosystem. However, removing AGs from environmental water remains a technical challenge due to high polarity, stronger hydrophilicity and unique characteristics of polycation. Herein, a thermal-crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol electrospun nanofiber membrane (T-PVA NFsM) is synthesized and firstly leveraged as the adsorptive removal of AGs from environmental water. The thermal crosslinking strategy is demonstrated to enhance both the water resistance and hydrophilicity of T-PVA NFsM, thereby effectively interacting with AGs with high stability. Experimental characterizations and analog calculations indicate that T-PVA NFsM utilizes multiple adsorption mechanisms, including electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions with AGs. As a result, the material achieves 91.09%-100% adsorption efficiencies and a maximum adsorption capacity of 110.35 mg g^-1 in less than 30 min. Furthermore, the adsorption kinetics follow the pseudo-second-order model. After eight consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, T-PVA NFsM with a simplified recycling process maintains a sustainable adsorption capability. Compared with other forms of adsorption materials, T-PVA NFsM has significant advantages such as less consumption of adsorbent, high adsorption efficiency and fast removal speed. Therefore, T-PVA NFsM-based adsorptive removal holds promise for eliminating AGs from environmental water.

Polyvinyl alcohol electrospun nanofiber membrane based solid-phase extraction for monitoring administered aminoglycoside antibiotics in various animal-derived foods

This work aims to develop a widely applicable method to monitor administered AGs in various animal-derived food samples to ensure food safety. A polyvinyl alcohol electrospun nanofiber membrane (PVA NFsM) was synthesized and employed as solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbent, in combination with UPLC-MS/MS, for the simultaneous detection of ten AGs in nine types of animal-derived food samples. PVA NFsM exhibited excellent adsorption performance for the targets (with an adsorption rate of over 91.09%), good matrix purification ability (with a reduction of 7.65%-77.47% in matrix effect after SPE), and good recyclability (can be reused 8 times). The method displayed a linear range of 0.1-25000 μg/kg and attained limits of detection for AGs were 0.03-15 μg/kg. Spiked samples demonstrated a recovery of 91.72%-100.04% with a precision of<13.66%. The practicality of the developed method was verified by testing multiple actual samples.

MoS2/polyaniline (PANI)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN)@BiFeO3 bilayer hollow nanofiber membrane: Photocatalytic filtration and piezoelectric effect enhancing degradation and disinfection

A novel MoS₂/polyaniline (PANI)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN)@BiFeO₃ bilayer hollow nanofiber membrane (PPBM-H) was successfully synthesized by coaxial electrospinning technique. In the nanofiber, BiFeO₃ nanoparticles (NPs) and MoS₂ nanosheets (NSs) were loaded in the middle and outer layers of the PANI/PAN composites, respectively, which constructs a type II heterojunction with spatially separated microtopography, thus significantly improving the charge separation in photocatalysis. Moreover, the hollow structure and the vast number of exposed groups on the surface of PPBM-H help to improve the mass transfer efficiency and pollutant adsorption performance in wastewater treatment. In addition, PPBM-H can generate H₂O₂ by in-situ activation of BiFeO₃/MoS₂ for photo-Fenton catalysis, enabling Fe³⁺ and Fe²⁺ recycling. Also, PPBM-H can produce piezoelectric polarisation under ultrasonic excitation, which can further enhance the efficiency of electron/hole separation and transfer, and induce the generation of active free radicals. Owing to its wonderful self-cleaning effect, the PPBM-H has good mechanical strength (2.95 Mpa), hydrophilicity (11.6°), water flux (1248 L·m^-2·h^-1), BSA rejection (98.8 %), and exhibits distinguished photocatalytic filtration efficiencies (99.5 % tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) and 99.9 % methyl orange (MO) within 60 min), piezo-photocatalysis (99.2 % TCH within 2 h), disinfection performance for Escherichia coli (E. coli) (100 %, within 60 min).

Fe3O4/ZIFs-based magnetic solid-phase extraction for the effective extraction of two precursors with diverse structures in aflatoxin B1 biosynthetic pathway

The aflatoxin B₁ (AFB₁) early warning technique based on precursors is an effective strategy for the prevention of AFB₁ contamination risk. The determination of precursors is imperative to ensure the efficiency of the early warning technique. Herein, a controllable magnetic adsorbent Fe₃O₄/ZIFs was first introduced for the effective extraction and determination of averantin (AVN) and sterigmatocystin (ST) precursors in cereal by combining magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Benefiting from the abundant adsorption sites and multifunctional groups matching the analytes, Fe₃O₄/ZIFs effectively and simultaneously extracted AVN and ST with great differences in polarity and structure via multiple interactions. AVN was extracted by Fe₃O₄/ZIFs mainly through π-π and hydrophobic interactions, while ST was extracted predominantly by electrostatic interactions and surface complexation. The limits of detection were 0.08 μg kg^-1 (AVN) and 0.36 μg kg^-1 (ST). The developed method exhibited satisfactory spiked recoveries (79.1%-105.4%) in the determination of AVN and ST in rice. This work provides a novel analytical strategy for further studying AFB₁ early warning technique and the formation and transformation of aflatoxins.

Preparation of a single and reusable biopolymer-based film for the extraction and preconcentration of anti-inflammatory drugs from environmental water samples

One of the main goals of green chemistry is to reduce the use of toxic materials and the generation of hazardous waste, both during method development and in the synthesis of the materials used. Thus, a biodegradable, single and reusable material composed of agarose and multi-walled carbon nanotubes was proposed. The film preparation was carefully optimized in order to obtain a one-piece sorbent, with high extraction efficiency and the possibility of reuse. The film was tested in the simultaneous extraction and preconcentration of three non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ketorolac, ketoprofen and piroxicam) from environmental water samples. The optimal extraction parameters were as follows: isopropyl alcohol as the activation solvent, a sample pH value of 3.0, extraction time of 30 min, 2.00 mL of acetonitrile as the eluent, an elution time of 5 minutes, and a sample volume of 250.00 mL. Under these conditions, the film was reusable 50 times without losing its extraction capacity significantly. HPLC with a photodiode array detector was used for the separation and determination. The method presented a linear range between 0.10 and 1.2 μg L^-1, good sensitivity with limits of detection between 0.0075 and 0.0089 μg L^-1, and quantification between 0.025 and 0.030 μg L^-1. In addition, low RSD values (0.46-3.13%) were obtained demonstrating satisfactory precision. Stream water samples were analyzed, and recoveries between 82.0 and 109.0% were obtained.

Magnetic Solid-Phase Extraction Based on Magnetite-Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatories from Water Followed by LC-ESI-MS/MS

An analytical method based on liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry detection (LC-ESI-MS/MS) has been developed for the determination of pharmaceutical compounds in water samples. Five non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) namely Naproxen, Ketoprofen, Piroxicam, Diflunisal and Celecoxib were investigated. Magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) was used for sample pre concentration of water samples and magnetic carbon nanotubes (Fe3O4-MWCNTs) were considered as solid phase extraction sorbent. Important parameters influencing the extraction efficiency such as nature and volume of eluent, sample pH and adsorbent mass were optimized. The developed MSPE method involved 75 mg of Fe3O4-MWCNTs sorbent, 5 mL of water sample at pH = 4 and 5 mL of 10% ammonia in methanol in the elution step. Under the optimized extraction conditions, linearity, detection and quantification limits and reproducibility were evaluated. The proposed method was successfully applied to the analysis of NSAIDs in surface waters, and mean recoveries of all the NSAIDs were above 90% with relative standard deviations < 17%. The detection and quantification limits were comprised between 0.05-3.6 ng.mL-1 and 0.2-11.9 ng.mL-1, respectively.

Polyaniline and Polyaniline-Based Materials as Sorbents in Solid-Phase Extraction Techniques

Polyaniline (PANI) is one of the best known and widely studied conducting polymers with multiple applications and unique physicochemical properties. Due to its porous structure and relatively high surface area as well as the affinity toward many analytes related to the ability to establish different types of interactions, PANI has a great potential as a sorbent in sample pretreatment before instrumental analyses. This study provides an overview of the applications of polyaniline and polyaniline composites as sorbents in sample preparation techniques based on solid-phase extraction, including conventional solid-phase extraction (SPE) and its modifications, solid-phase microextraction (SPME), dispersive solid-phase extraction (dSPE), magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) and stir-bar sorptive extraction (SBSE). The utility of PANI-based sorbents in chromatography was also summarized. It has been shown that polyaniline is willingly combined with other components and PANI-based materials may be formed in a variety of shapes. Polyaniline alone and PANI-based composites were successfully applied for sample preparation before determination of various analytes, both metal ions and organic compounds, in different matrices such as environmental samples, food, human plasma, urine, and blood.

Emerging Applications of Versatile Polyaniline-Based Polymers in the Food Industry

Intrinsically conducting polymers (ICPs) have been widely studied in various applications, such as sensors, tissue engineering, drug delivery, and semiconductors. Specifically, polyaniline (PANI) stands out in food industry applications due to its advantageous reversible redox properties, electrical conductivity, and simple modification. The rising concerns about food safety and security have encouraged the development of PANI as an antioxidant, antimicrobial agent, food freshness indicator, and electronic nose. At the same time, it plays an important role in food safety control to ensure the quality of food. This study reviews the emerging applications of PANI in the food industry. It has been found that the versatile applications of PANI allow the advancement of modern active and intelligent food packaging and better food quality monitoring systems.

Determination of five nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in water by dispersive solid phase extraction-ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry based on metal-organic framework composite aerogel

非甾体类抗炎药(NSAIDs)能在环境水体中长期稳定存在,不仅对生物有慢性毒性还能增加病原体的耐药性,开发可靠的测定水样中痕量非甾体抗炎药的分析方法至关重要。该文制备新型金属有机骨架/壳聚糖复合气凝胶材料Co-UiO-67(bpy)/CS分散固相萃取吸附剂,将其用于环境水体中酮洛芬、萘普生、氟比洛芬、双氯芬酸、布洛芬5种非甾体类抗炎药的富集,结合超高效液相色谱-串联质谱法(UPLC-MS/MS),建立了基于金属有机骨架材料(MOFs)复合气凝胶环境水体中药物残留检测的新方法。为获得最佳的萃取效率,对影响萃取效果的主要因素(材料类型、MOFs用量、萃取时间、水样pH值、离子强度、甲酸体积分数、洗脱时间、洗脱剂体积)进行条件考察及优化。优化结果显示,吸附剂5 min内就可实现目标化合物的完全吸附,用总体积为5 mL的1%甲酸甲醇溶液洗脱6 min,目标化合物就能充分解吸。在最优的固相萃取条件下建立分析方法,结果表明,5种非甾体类抗炎药在各自范围内线性关系良好,线性相关系数均大于0.9937,方法的检出限(LOD)和定量限(LOQ)分别为0.32~2.06 ng/L和1.05~6.78 ng/L。在40、250和1500 ng/L 3个加标水平下进行加标回收试验,5种待测物的平均回收率为74.5%~114.1%。日内、日间相对标准偏差分别为1.3%~12.3%和1.3%~11.5%。将该方法用于实际水样的检测,市政污水检测出微量的酮洛芬和氟比洛芬,含量分别为14.52 ng/L和10.05 ng/L。该方法具有良好的灵敏度、准确度和精密度,操作简便,耗时短,为环境水体中痕量非甾体抗炎药富集检测提供了新方法。

Efficient, rapid and simple adsorption method by polydopamine polystyrene nanofibers mat for removal of multi-class antibiotic residues in environmental water

Polydopamine polystyrene nanofibers mat (PDA-PS NFsM) was prepared as an adsorbent for the simultaneous removal of multiple antibiotic residues in environmental water for the first time. PDA-PS NFsM can directly be used to adsorb 18 antibiotic residues belonging to 8 classes without any pretreatment of water samples. The adsorption process was completed within 5 min. All antibiotics could be removed at the same time, and the removal rate of each target was above 85%. Moreover, the used PDA-PS NFsM can be easily separated from the environmental water by taking out directly, and can be reused for 10 times after simple regeneration. The thermodynamic and kinetic properties of PDA-PS NFsM adsorption of antibiotic residues were further investigated consequently. It was found that the adsorptions of PDA-PS NFsM to the targets were spontaneous and endothermic process (ΔG<0, ΔH>0, ΔS>0). The results of adsorption kinetic experiments illustrated that the adsorption process was rapid, the adsorption equilibrium of which can be reached in 5 min. Adsorption isotherm experiments proved that the adsorption process of PDA-PS NFsM was consistent with Langmuir adsorption (R² > 0.994), and the maximum adsorption capacity of PDA-PS NFsM towards all targets were 123.76 mg g^-1. The developed method is rapid and simple, and can efficiently adsorb and remove a variety of antibiotics in environmental water, which has good practical application prospect.

Preparation of molecularly imprinted resin/polydopamine nanofibers mat for the highly efficient extraction and determination of sulfonamides in environmental water

With polyacrylonitrile nanofibers mat (PAN NFsM) as a template, molecularly imprinted resin/polydopamine nanofibers mat (MIR/PDA NFsM) was synthesized for the extraction of sulfonamides (SAs) in water. The specific surface area and pore volume were increased obviously due to the functionalization of MIR. The adsorption efficiencies of MIR/PDA NFsM under optimized conditions for SAs were 92.3-99.3%. Possible adsorption mechanisms of imprinting recognition and hydrogen bond interactions were also put forward. Compared with MIR particles, the MIR/PDA NFsM exhibited much superior adsorption performance. Particularly, the outstanding mass transfer efficiency of MIR/PDA NFsM was much higher than the other reported adsorbents for SAs. Finally, a new method based on the solid-phase extraction (SPE) of MIR/PDA NFsM was successfully developed for the detection of five SAs in environmental water with HPLC-MS/MS and applied to the analysis of actual samples. Under the selected conditions, the enrichment factors of MIR/PDA NFsM of SCP, SMT, SMZ, SMR, and SMX were between 23.0 and 25.0. Low detection limits (0.26-0.76 ng L^-1), broad linear range (1.0 ng L^-1 to 10.0 μg L^-1), and satisfactory recoveries (82.8-115.6%) and precisions (RSDs < 7.2%) were obtained. Moreover, the excellent reusability properties and storage stability endowed MIR/PDA NFsM with great value for practical applications.

Imine-linked covalent organic frameworks coated stir bar sorptive extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs from environmental water followed by high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection

In this study, spherical imine-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) were fabricated from 2,5-dimethoxybenzene-1,4-dialdehyde (DMTP) and 1,3,5-tris (4-aminophenyl) benzene (TAPB) and named as TAPB-DMTP-COFs. The resulting powders were coated onto bare glass bars via physical-adhesion to obtain TAPB-DMTP-COFs coated stir bars. The self-made stir bars exhibited higher extraction efficiency (74-85%) and faster dynamics (50 min) towards non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) over ethylene glycol-Silicone (42-68%, 180 min) and polydimethylsiloxane (3-61%, 180 min) coated stir bars. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), zeta potential and water contact angle were employed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the adsorption mechanism between the coating and analytes. The results displayed that methoxy group worked as an adsorption site helping the adsorption of interest NSAIDs onto the TAPB-DMTP-COFs coating and hydrogen bonds formed between the O atoms and the analytes. Additionally, the adsorption mechanisms possibly also involved π-π interaction and hydrophobic interaction. Moreover, TAPB-DMTP-COFs coated stir bars exhibited good stability and could be reused more than 60 times. Subsequently, a method by combining TAPB-DMTP-COFs coated stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) with liquid chromatography (HPLC)-ultraviolet detector (UV) was established for the determination of four NSAIDs in environmental waters. Under the optimized conditions, the established method showed a wide linear range of 0.2/1-500 μg/L for interest NSAIDs, the limits of detection varied from 0.039 to 0.312 μg/L. Yangtze River water, East Lake water and Spring water were subjected to the proposed method, the recoveries in spiked samples were 84.7-104%, 81.2-101% and 82.6-97.6%, respectively.

Lab-In-Syringe with Bead Injection Coupled Online to High-Performance Liquid Chromatography as Versatile Tool for Determination of Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs in Surface Waters

We report on the hyphenation of the modern flow techniques Lab-In-Syringe and Lab-On-Valve for automated sample preparation coupled online with high-performance liquid chromatography. Adopting the bead injection concept on the Lab-On-Valve platform, the on-demand, renewable, solid-phase extraction of five nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, namely ketoprofen, naproxen, flurbiprofen, diclofenac, and ibuprofen, was carried out as a proof-of-concept. In-syringe mixing of the sample with buffer and standards allowed straightforward pre-load sample modification for the preconcentration of large sample volumes. Packing of ca. 4.4 mg microSPE columns from Oasis HLB^® sorbent slurry was performed for each sample analysis using a simple microcolumn adapted to the Lab-On-Valve manifold to achieve low backpressure during loading. Eluted analytes were injected into online coupled HPLC with subsequent separation on a Symmetry C18 column in isocratic mode. The optimized method was highly reproducible, with RSD values of 3.2% to 7.6% on 20 µg L^-1 level. Linearity was confirmed up to 200 µg L^-1 and LOD values were between 0.06 and 1.98 µg L^-1. Recovery factors between 91 and 109% were obtained in the analysis of spiked surface water samples.

[Determination of tetracycline and fluoroquinolone residues in fish by polydopamine nanofiber mat based solid phase extraction combined with ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry]

Tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones are common antibacterial drugs used in aquaculture, and their residues may pose a risk to human health. The low concentration of drug residues and complex matrixes such as fats and proteins in aquatic products necessitate the urgent development of efficient sample pretreatment methods. Solid phase extraction (SPE) is the most common sample pretreatment method, in which the core is an adsorbent. Compared with traditional SPE adsorbents, nanofiber mat (NFsM) has more interaction sites because of their large specific surface area. Furthermore, NFsMs modified with specific functional groups can significantly improve the extraction efficiency of tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones. Polydopamine (PDA) is spontaneously synthesized by the oxidative self-polymerization of dopamine-hydrochloride in alkaline solutions (pH>7.5). Because of its rich amino and catechol groups, PDA can form π-π stacking, electrostatic attraction, hydrophobic interaction, and hydrogen bonding interactions with target molecules. By exploiting the above advantages, polystyrene (PS) NFsM, as a template, was prepared by the electrostatic spinning method, and PDA-PS NFsM was obtained by functional modification of PDA through self-polymerization. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) were used to characterize the synthesized PS NFsM and PDA-PS NFsM. It was proved that PDA was successfully modified on the PS NFsM, with the SEM images revealing a rough outer core shell structure and an inner honeycomb structure. Subsequently, the handmade SPE column with PDA-PS NFsM was completed. A novel and efficient screening analytical method based on PDA-PS NFsM for the simultaneous determination of three tetracyclines (tetracycline (TET), chlortetracycline (CTC), and oxytetracycline (OTC)) and three fluoroquinolones (enrofloxacin (ENR), ciprofloxacin (CIP), and norfloxacin (NOR)) in fish by ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) was established. The SPE procedure was optimized to develop an efficient method for sample preparation. Evaluate parameters including the amount of NFsM usage, ionic strength, flow rate of the sample solution, composition of eluent, and breakthrough volume were investigated. Only (20±0.1) mg of PDA-PS NFsM was sufficient to completely adsorb the targets, and the analytes retained on NFsM could be eluted by 1 mL of formic acid-ethyl acetate (containing 20% methanol) (1∶99, v/v). The residues were redissolved in 0.1 mL 10% methanol aqueous solution containing 0.2% formic acid. In addition, no adjustment of the pH and ionic strength of the sample solutions was required, and the breakthrough volume was 50 mL. The limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) of the six target compounds were measured at 3 times and 10 times the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N), respectively. The LODs and LOQs were 0.3-1.5 μg/kg and 1.0-5.0 μg/kg, respectively. The linear ranges of the six target compounds were LOQ-1000 μg/kg, and the coefficient of determination (R²) was greater than 0.999. To evaluate the accuracy and precision, blank spiked samples at three levels (low, medium, and high) were prepared for the recovery experiments, and each level with six parallel samples (n=6). The recoveries ranged from 94.37% to 102.82%, with intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviations of 2.38% to 8.06% and 4.10% to 9.10%, respectively. To evaluate the purification capacity of PDA-PS NFsM, the matrix effects before and after SPE were calculated and compared. Matrix effects before SPE were -12.98% to -38.68%. After the completion of SPEbased on PDA-PS NFsM, the matrix effect of each target analyte was significantly reduced to -2.15% to -7.36%, which proved the significant matrix removal capacity of PDA-PS NFsM. Finally, the practicality of this method was evaluated by using it to analyze real samples. This SPE method based on PDA-PS NFsM is efficient, practical, and environmentally friendly, and it has great potential for use in the routine monitoring of drug residues in fish.

Triazine-triphenylphosphine based porous organic polymer as sorbent for solid phase extraction of nitroimidazoles from honey and water

A triazine-based porous organic polymer was prepared by facile solvothermal polymerization with cyanuric chloride and triphenyl phosphine as functional monomers. The polymer was characterized and then used for the first time as the sorbent for the effective solid-phase extraction of some nitroimidazoles (NDZs) (metronidazole, ronidazole, secnidazole, dimetridazole and ornidazole). The main experimental influencing parameters for the extraction including the eluent solvent, eluent volume, sample loading rate, sample solution pH, salt concentration and sample volume were investigated. The adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms were investigated to elucidate the possible adsorption mechanism. With the triazine-based porous organic polymer as the SPE adsorbent, trace NDZs were effectively extracted. The good enrichment capability for the NDZs was mainly attributed to the hydrogen binding interactions by the aromatic 1,3,5-trizine rings. After the SPE, the extracted analytes were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatograph with ultraviolet detection. Under the selected conditions, the method had a good linear response for the analytes in the range of 0.06-120 ng mL^-1 for water and 1.5-1200 ng g^-1 for honey samples. The limits of detections (S/N=3) fell in the range of 0.02-0.06 ng mL^-1 for water and 0.5-1.5 ng g^-1 for honey samples. The method recoveries for the analytes for spiked samples were in the range of 80.3-118%. The method can be applied for the determination of the NDZs from real samples.

Polypyrrole-functionalized magnetic Bi2MoO6 nanocomposites as a fast, efficient and reusable adsorbent for removal of ketoprofen and indomethacin from aqueous solution

Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) as emerging organic pollutants have received widespread attention. A novel composite adsorbent was successfully prepared through the modification of polypyrrole (PPy) onto the surface of magnetic Bi₂MoO₆ (MnFe₂O₄/Bi₂MoO₆/PPy) and acted as excellent adsorbent to remove organic compounds from aqueous solution. The adsorbent was characterized by SEM, TEM, FT-IR, XRD, BET, VSM, XPS and PES. The resulting composites combined the advantages of all three parts and possessed porous structure and magnetic properties, which showed excellent adsorption performance for ketoprofen (KET) and indomethacin (IDM), as evidenced by 87.03% and 86.24% of removal in just 120 min at initial concentration of 10 mg/L, respectively. The adsorption processes of MnFe₂O₄/Bi₂MoO₆/PPy for PPCPs were well fitted with the pseudo-second order kinetic model and described better by Langmuir isotherm model. The possible adsorption mechanisms of KET and IDM by MnFe₂O₄/Bi₂MoO₆/PPy were provided. Additionally, the effect of other coexisting substances was also explored using Cu²⁺ as a model. Moreover, the adsorption performances were further studied to remove several dyes, in which showed superior affinity for anionic dyes. In practical application, it had almost equal removal capacity for KET both in the Yellow River water and sewage treatment plant inlet water.

Tolfenamic acid on-line preconcentration strategy on carbon nanotubes minicolumn with fluorimetric detection

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs) are a group of pharmaceuticals considered one of the most popular drugs used in clinical practice applied to the treatment of acute and chronic conditions. Some pharmaceuticals products are excreted reaching the environment and altering the balance of ecosystems. This work proposes a new fluorimetric flow injection (FI) methodology for the NSAID tolfenamic acid quantification based on the quenching effect of the analyte on fluorescent signal of bovine serum albumin fluorophore. Results put in evidence a mechanism of static quenching, with a Stern Volmer constant value of 1.8 × 10⁷ L mol^-1. To achieve the selective on-line preconcentration of analyte, a carbon nanotubes mini column was introduced in the FI configuration producing a beneficial effect on high sampling frequency, minimum sample and reagents consumption. The experimental factors that influence batch fluorescent signal and FI analysis have been studied and optimized. At optimal experimental conditions, an adequate tolerance to foreign species was shown. With the flow configuration, a LOD of 0.019 μg L^-1, a LOQ of 0.058 μg L^-1 were obtained with a sampling rate of 30 samples h^-1. The new methodology was successfully applied to analyte determination in tap water and pharmaceutical and factory waste samples with recuperation near to 100%.

A flower-like hybrid material composed of Fe3O4, graphene oxide and CdSe nanodots for magnetic solid phase extraction of ibuprofen prior to its quantification by HPLC detection

A flower-like Fe₃O₄/GO/CdSe nanodot magnetic hybrid material was produced and applied to magnetic solid-phase extraction of ibuprofen from pharmaceuticals, water, and urine samples. The material was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy and SEM-EDX. The pH value, volume of sample solution, amount of sorbent, type and volume of elution solvent and extraction time were optimized. Following elution with acetone, ibuprofen was quantified by HPLC-DAD detection. The recoveries of ibuprofen from spiked real samples ranged between 87 and 109%, and the intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviations from 1.25 to 3.02%. The limit of detection, limit of quantification and preconcentration factor are 0.36 ng·mL^-1,1.20 ng·mL^-1 and 150, respectively. Facile Synthesis of Porous Carbon for the Removal of Diclofenac Sodium from Water

In this work, a series of porous carbon materials (PCs) were obtained at different carbonization temperatures (800, 900, 1000, and 1100 °C) by a simple and fast solvent-free method. Moreover, the feasibility of PCs as reliable and efficient adsorbents to capture diclofenac sodium (DCF) from the water was evaluated. Notably, porous carbon (PC) prepared at 1000 °C (PC-1000) was found to be the best candidate for the adsorption of DCF. Remarkably, adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 3 h, which followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model with a high correlation coefficient (R ² > 0.994). Furthermore, experimental data obtained from adsorption isotherm indicated that the capture of DCF onto PC-1000 followed the Langmuir adsorption model (R ² > 0.997), wherein its maximum adsorption capacity was calculated to be 392 mg/g. In addition, based on the results obtained from the zeta potential of PC-1000 under different pH and the adsorbed quantity of DCF along with functional groups created on the surface of PC-1000, electrostatic and H-bonding interactions were proposed as the possible adsorption mechanisms. Due to its high stability and excellent reusability, PC-1000 has been testified as a promising candidate for removing DCF from contaminated water.

A nanohybrid composed of polyoxotungstate and graphene oxide for dispersive micro solid-phase extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs prior to their quantitation by HPLC

A nanohybrid was prepared from polyoxotungstate anion and graphene oxide (POT/GO) and characterized in terms of porosity by applying Fourier transform infrared and transmission electron microscopy. The nanohybrid was applied as a sorbent for the dispersive micro solid-phase extraction of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) ibuprofen, diclofenac, and naproxen. Different types of sorbents were compared, and the POT/GO nanohybrid was found to have the best adsorption affinity. The NSAIDs were quantified via HPLC with UV detection. Under the optimum conditions, the limits of detection (at an S/N ratio of 3) range between 0.02-0.03 ng.mL^-1, and the linear response ranges extend from 0.08-200 ng.mL^-1, respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) for five replicates at three concentration levels (0.1, 5 and 100 ng.mL^-1) of NSAIDs ranged from 4.1 to 6.1%. The applicability of the method was confirmed by analyzing spiked real water samples, and satisfactory results were obtained, with recoveries between 95.6 and 99.6%. High-Throughput and High-Efficient Micro-solid Phase Extraction Based on Sulfonated-Polyaniline/Polyacrylonitrile Nanofiber Mats for Determination of Fluoroquinolones in Animal-Origin Foods

We herein describe a high-throughput 96-well plate micro-solid phase extraction sample preparation technique based on novel sulfonated-polyaniline/polyacrylonitrile nanofiber mats (sulfonated-PANI/PAN NFMs) for multiresidue detection of fluoroquinolones (FQs) in various animal-origin food samples. Through the double-modification of polyaniline and sulfonic acid, the resulting functionalized sulfonated-PANI/PAN NFMs present high extraction efficiency for FQs. Compared with the existing methods, this approach demonstrates its advantages of being suitable for more sample matrices (milk, animal muscle, liver, kidney, and egg), lower sample amount (0.5 g), lower sorbent requirement (5.0 mg), lower volume of organic solvent (0.7 mL), shorter time (0.2 min per sample), and high sensitivity (0.012-0.06 μg·kg^-1). In addition, sulfonated-PANI/PAN NFMs possess excellent reusability which could be reused 10 times without an obvious decrease in extraction efficiency. Combined with ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, the novel sample preparation technique can be expected as an efficient method for routine trace FQ residue monitoring in animal-origin food samples.

Polypyrrole-Modified Nylon 6 Nanofibers as Adsorbent for the Extraction of Two β-Lactam Antibiotics in Water Followed by Determination with Capillary Electrophoresis

A solid phase membrane adsorbent—a nylon 6 nanofibers membrane coated by polypyrrole (PPy-PA6-NFsM)—was firstly synthesized and used for extraction of two β-lactam antibiotics (oxacillin and cloxacillin) in urban river water. Then the analytes were detected by capillary electrophoresis with a diode array detector (CE-DAD). The synthesized nanofibers membrane was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The experimental conditions were optimized, including the amount used of PPy-PA6-NFsM, pH of the sample solutions, adsorption volume, and desorption conditions. Under the optimal extraction and separation conditions, the detection limits were found to be 2.0 ng/mL for both oxacillin and cloxacillin. The proposed method was applied to the determination of the two β-lactams in water samples of an urban river. The recoveries of these two β-lactams were found to be in the range 84.2–96.4%, demonstrating that PPy-PA6-NFsM has a high extraction capability for these two antibiotics. The relative standard deviations, ranging from 2.26% to 5.29% for intraday measurements and from 2.38% to 7.02% for inter-day determinations, were derived respectively.
