Unveiling the impacts of microplastic pollution on soil health: A comprehensive review

Soil contamination by microplastics (MPs) has emerged as a significant global concern. Although traditionally associated with crop production, contemporary understanding of soil health has expanded to include a broader range of factors, including animal safety, microbial diversity, ecological functions, and human health protection. This paradigm shifts underscores the imperative need for a comprehensive assessment of the effects of MPs on soil health. Through an investigation of various soil health indicators, this review endeavors to fill existing knowledge gaps, drawing insights from recent studies conducted between 2021 and 2024, to elucidate how MPs may disrupt soil ecosystems and compromise their crucial functions. This review provides a thorough analysis of the processes leading to MP contamination in soil environments and highlights film residues as major contributors to agricultural soils. MPs entering the soil detrimentally affect crop productivity by hindering growth and other physiological processes. Moreover, MPs hinder the survival, growth, and reproductive rates of the soil fauna, posing potential health risks. Additionally, a systematic evaluation of the impact of MPs on soil microbes and nutrient cycling highlights the diverse repercussions of MP contamination. Moreover, within soil-plant systems, MPs interact with other pollutants, resulting in combined pollution. For example, MPs contain oxygen-containing functional groups on their surfaces that form high-affinity hydrogen bonds with other pollutants, leading to prolonged persistence in the soil environment thereby increasing the risk to soil health. In conclusion, we succinctly summarize the current research challenges related to the mediating effects of MPs on soil health and suggest promising directions for future studies. Addressing these challenges and adopting interdisciplinary approaches will advance our understanding of the intricate interplay between MPs and soil ecosystems, thereby providing evidence-based strategies for mitigating their adverse effects.

Earthworms alleviate microplastics stress on soil microbial and protist communities

Microplastic (MP) pollution can exert significant pressure on soil ecosystems, however, the interactive effects of MPs on soil bacterial, fungal and protist communities remains poorly understood. Soil macrofauna, such as earthworms, can be directly affected by MPs, potentially leading to a range of feedbacks on the soil microbial community. To address this, we conducted a microcosm experiment to examine the effects of conventional (i.e., polyethylene, polystyrene) and biodegradable MPs (i.e. PBAT, polylactic acid) on the structure of the soil bacterial, fungal, and protist communities in the presence or absence of earthworms. We found that MP contamination negatively affected the diversity and composition of soil microbial and protist communities, with smaller-sized conventional MPs having the most pronounced effects. For example, compared with the unamended control, small-sized polyethylene MPs both significantly reduced the Shannon diversity of soil bacteria, fungi, and protist by 4.3 %, 37.0 %, and 9.1 %, respectively. Biodegradable MPs increased negative correlations among bacteria, fungi, and protists. However, earthworms mitigated these effects, enhancing the diversity and altering the composition of these communities. They also increased the niche width and stability of the soil microbial food web network. Our study indicated that earthworms help attenuate the response of soil microorganisms to MPs stress by influencing the diversity and composition of soil microorganisms and soil physicochemical properties and underscores the importance of considering macrofauna in MPs research.

Ecotoxicological effects of polyethylene microplastics and lead (Pb) on the biomass, activity, and community diversity of soil microbes

Microplastics and heavy metals are ubiquitous and persistent contaminants that are widely distributed worldwide, yet little is known about the effects of their interaction on soil ecosystems. A soil incubation experiment was conducted to investigate the individual and combined effects of polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) and lead (Pb) on soil enzymatic activities, microbial biomass, respiration rate, and community diversity. The results indicate that the presence of PE-MPs notably reduced soil pH and elevated soil Pb bioavailability, potentially exacerbated the combined toxicity on the biogeochemical cycles of soil nutrients, microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen, and the activities of soil urease, sucrase, and alkaline phosphatase. Soil CO2 emissions increased by 7.9% with PE-MPs alone, decreased by 46.3% with single Pb, and reduced by 69.4% with PE-MPs and Pb co-exposure, compared to uncontaminated soils. Specifically, the presence of PE-MPs and Pb, individually and in combination, facilitated the soil metabolic quotient, leading to reduced microbial metabolic efficiency. Moreover, the addition of Pb and PE-MPs modified the composition of the microbial community, leading to the enrichment of specific taxa. Tax4Fun analysis showed the effects of Pb, PE-MPs and their combination on the biogeochemical processes and ecological functions of microbes were mainly by altering amino acid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, membrane transport, and signal transduction. These findings offer valuable insights into the ecotoxicological effects of combined PE-MPs and Pb on soil microbial dynamics, reveals key assembly mechanisms and environmental drivers, and highlights the potential threat of MPs and heavy metals to the multifunctionality of soil ecosystems.

Variations in different preceding crops on the soil environment, bacterial community richness and diversity of tobacco-planting soil

Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) is a major cash crop, and soil quality played a significant role in the yield and quality of tobacco. Most farmers cultivate tobacco in rotation with other crops to improve the soil characteristics. However, the effects of different previous crops on the soil's nutrient status and bacterial community for tobacco cultivation still need to be determined. Three treatments were assessed in this study, i.e., tobacco-planting soil without treatment (CK), soil with barley previously cultivated (T1), and soil with rapeseed previously cultivated (T2). The soil physical and chemical properties and the 16S rRNA gene sequence diversity of the bacterial community were analyzed. The effects of different crops on the physical and chemical properties of tobacco-planting soil and the diversity and richness of the bacterial community were comprehensively discussed. The results of this study showed that different previously cultivated crops altered the nutrient status of the soil, with changes in the ratio of NH4 +-N to NO3 --N having the most significant impact on tobacco. In CK, the ratio of NH4 +-N to NO3 --N was 1:24.2, T1-1:9.59, and T2-1:11.10. The composition of the bacterial community in tobacco-planting soil varied significantly depending on the previously cultivated crops. The richness and diversity of the bacterial community with different crops were considerably higher than without prior cultivation of different crops. The dominant bacteria in different treatments were Actinobacteriota, Proteobacteria, and Chloroflexi with their relative abundance differed. In conclusion, our study revealed significant differences in nutrient status, bacterial community diversity, and the richness of tobacco-planting soil after the preceding cultivation of different crops. Suitable crops should be selected to be previously cultivated in tobacco crop rotations in near future for sustainable agriculture.

Functional Hydrogels Promote Vegetable Growth in Cadmium-Contaminated Soil

Over the years, the concentration of cadmium in soil has increased due to industrialization. Cadmium in the soil enters the human body through plant accumulation, seriously endangering human health. In the current study, two types of hydrogels were successfully synthesized using a free radical polymerization method: an ion-type hydrogel referred to as DMAPAA (N-(3-(Dimethyl amino) propyl) acrylamide)/DMAPAAQ (N,N-Dimethyl amino propyl acrylamide, methyl chloride quaternary) and a non-ion-type hydrogel known as DMAA (N,N-Dimethylacrylamide). In the experiment carried out in this study, the ion-type hydrogel DMAPAA/DMAPAAQ was introduced to cadmium-contaminated soil for vegetable cultivation. The study found that at cadmium levels of 0 and 2 mg/kg in soil, when exposed to a pH 2 solution, cadmium wasn't detected in the filtrate using ICP. As the amount of cadmium increased to 500 mg/kg, hydrogel addition gradually reduced the filtrate cadmium concentration. Notably, the use of the 4% hydrogel resulted in 0 mg/L of cadmium. For the 0% hydrogel, vegetable cadmium absorption was determined to be 0.07 mg/g, contrasting with 0.03 mg/g for the 4% hydrogel. The DMAPAA/DMAPAAQ hydrogel significantly boosts vegetable growth by efficiently absorbing nitrate ions through ion exchange, releasing them for plant uptake. In contrast, the DMAA hydrogel, used as a control, does not enhance plant growth despite its water absorption properties. In summary, the composite hydrogel shows great potential for enhancing vegetable yield and immobilizing heavy metals in soil.

Preparation of Mn modified waste dander biochar and its effect on soil carbon sequestration

In order to reduce the mineralization of soil organic carbon (SOC) and enhance the ability of soil carbon sequestration. Mn-modified waste dander biochar (Mn-BC) was successfully prepared via impregnation and pyrolysis, and MnSO4 was formed on its surface. Mn-BC increases the carbon retention and reduces the emissions of CO2 and SO2 in way of forming CO, Mn-O-C bond and MnSO4. At the same time, the stability of the original biochar was reserved due to forming a conjugated structure (CC and pyridine-N bond), and the carbon sequestration content was increased to 25.63%. Importantly, the application of Mn-BC can directly regulate the transformation of microbial bacterial community and lead to create stable carbon dominant bacteria (Firmicutes). And the mineralization rate of SOC is reduced to 0.48 mg CO2/(g·d), together with an increased content of TOC (48.16%), thus the purpose of efficient carbon sequestration is achieved in soil.

Organic amendments modulate the crop yield and rhizospheric bacterial community diversity: a 3-year field study with Cajanus cajan

Excessive use of chemicals to enhance soil nutrient status and crop yield has resulted in a decline in soil health. Organic farming promotes organic amendments, which help to balance the ecosystem. Understanding the dynamic patterns of belowground microbial populations is essential for developing sustainable agricultural systems. Therefore, the study was designed to evaluate the effect of different agri-practices on rhizospheric bacterial diversity and crop yield in an Indian agricultural system. A 3-year field experiment was set up in a randomized block design using Cajanus cajan as a model crop, comparing conventional farming with organic practice (with animal manure and bio-compost as amendments). Plant and rhizospheric soil samples were collected at the harvest stage for assessing various growth attributes, and for characterizing rhizospheric bacterial diversity. Enhanced crop productivity was seen in conventional farming, with a 2.2-fold increase in grain yield over control. However, over the 3 years, an overall positive impact was observed in the bio-compost-based organic amendment, in terms of bacterial abundance, over other treatments. At the harvest stage of the third cropping season, the bacterial diversity in the organic treatments showed little similarity to the initial bacterial community composition of the amendment applied, indicating stabilization along the growth cycles. The study emphasizes the significance of the choice of the amendment for ushering in agricultural sustainability.

Heterogeneous Antibiotic Resistance Gene Removal Impedes Evaluation of Constructed Wetlands for Effective Greywater Treatment

Microorganisms carrying antimicrobial resistance genes are often found in greywater. As the reuse of greywater becomes increasingly needed, it is imperative to determine how greywater treatment impacts antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). Using qPCR and SmartChip™ qPCR, we characterized ARG patterns in greywater microbial communities before, during, and after treatment by a recirculating vertical flow constructed wetland. In parallel, we examined the impact of greywater-treated irrigation on soil, including the occurrence of emerging micropollutants and the taxonomic and ARG compositions of microbial communities. Most ARGs in raw greywater are removed efficiently during the winter season, while some ARGs in the effluents increase in summer. SmartChip™ qPCR revealed the presence of ARGs, such as tetracycline and beta-lactam resistance genes, in both raw and treated greywater, but most abundantly in the filter bed. It also showed that aminoglycoside and vancomycin gene abundances significantly increased after treatment. In the irrigated soil, the type of water (potable or treated greywater) had no specific impact on the total bacterial abundance (16S rRNA gene). No overlapping ARGs were found between treated greywater and greywater-irrigated soil. This study indicates ARG abundance and richness increased after treatment, possibly due to the concentration effects of the filter beds.

The Bacterial and Fungal Compositions in the Rhizosphere of Asarum heterotropoides Fr. Schmidt var. mandshuricum (Maxim.) Kitag. in a Typical Planting Region

Asarum is a traditional Chinese medicinal plant, and its dried roots are commonly used as medicinal materials. Research into the traits of the bacteria and fungus in the Asarum rhizosphere and how they relate to the potency of medicinal plants is important. During four cropping years and collecting months, we used ITS rRNA gene amplicon and sequencing to assess the population, diversity, and predominant kinds of bacteria and fungus in the rhizosphere of Asarum. HPLC was used to determine the three bioactive ingredients, namely asarinin, aristolochic acid I, and volatile oil. The mainly secondary metabolites of Asarum, relationships between microbial communities, soil physicochemical parameters, and possible influences on microbial communities owing to various cropping years and collecting months were all statistically examined. The cropping years and collecting months affected the abundance and diversity of rhizosphere bacteria and fungi, but the cropping year had a significant impact on the structures and compositions of the bacterial communities. The rhizosphere microorganisms were influenced by both the soil physicochemical properties and enzyme activities. Additionally, this study revealed that Trichoderma was positively correlated with the three bioactive ingredients of Asarum, while Tausonia showed entirely opposite results. Gibberella and Leptosphaeria demonstrated a significantly negative correlation with asarinin and violate oil, but they were weakly correlated with the aristolochic acid I content. This study revealed variations in the Asarum rhizosphere microorganism population, diversity, and dominant types across four cropping years and collecting months. The relationship between Asarum secondary metabolites, the soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, and rhizosphere microorganisms was discussed. Our results will guide the exploration of the soil characteristics and rhizosphere microorganisms' structures by regulating the microbial community to enhance Asarum quality.

Enhancing phosphate-solubilising microbial communities through artificial selection

Microbial communities, acting as key drivers of ecosystem processes, harbour immense potential for sustainable agriculture practices. Phosphate-solubilising microorganisms, for example, can partially replace conventional phosphate fertilisers, which rely on finite resources. However, understanding the mechanisms and engineering efficient communities poses a significant challenge. In this study, we employ two artificial selection methods, environmental perturbation, and propagation, to construct phosphate-solubilising microbial communities. To assess trait transferability, we investigate the community performance in different media and a hydroponic system with Chrysanthemum indicum. Our findings reveal a distinct subset of phosphate-solubilising bacteria primarily dominated by Klebsiella and Enterobacterales. The propagated communities consistently demonstrate elevated levels of phosphate solubilisation, surpassing the starting soil community by 24.2% in activity. The increased activity of propagated communities remains consistent upon introduction into the hydroponic system. This study shows the efficacy of community-level artificial selection, particularly through propagation, as a tool for successfully modifying microbial communities to enhance phosphate solubilisation.

Application of compost assisted by Fe3O4 nanoparticles in di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate-contaminated soil remediation: Biostimulation strategy, Soil responses, and RSM/CCD Optimization

Globally, contamination of agricultural soils by phthalate esters (PAEs) caused by direct consumption of plastic mulch films has been confirmed. The most widely used plasticizer is di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), which is a more recalcitrant endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC). Because of its low solubility and hydrophobicity, it remains in the soil longer, causes bioaccumulation in agricultural products, and has negative repercussions for food safety. In this study, the performance of kitchen organic waste compost assisted by Fe3O4 nanoparticles in DEHP removal efficiency (%) and soil C:N ratio (two responses) was optimized using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) based on Central Composite Design (CCD) in Design-Expert software (11.0.3.0). Under optimum conditions, a DEHP concentration of 10 mg·kg-1 (dw soil), a retention time of 35 days, an NPs dose of 0.99 g·kg-1 (media), a removal efficiency of 91.6 %, and a soil C:N ratio of 10.5 with a desirability of 0.963 were determined. A quadratic model (P-value <0.0001, adjusted R2 = 0.974 (Y1), 0.943 (Y2)) was used to predict the variables and their interactions. The agricultural soil responses in the treatments amended by compost and Fe3O4 NPs (SCN) showed a significant increase in SOM, TC, TN, AP, K, and Fe nutrients when compared to the control (P < 0.05). After 35 days, in the SC1N3 treatment (DEHP concentration = 10 mg·kg-1, NPs dose =1.2 g·kg-1), with higher DEHP removal efficiency (89.57 %), the C:N:P ratio was equal to 100: 9.75:0.69, and the total microbial colony count was 3.6 × 109 CFU/ml at pH 7.45. The study found that compost nutrients and Fe-based nanoparticle micronutrients can enhance DEHP degradation by stimulating the soil's native microflora. As a result, the synergistic potential of compost and Fe3O4 nanoparticles can be considered a promising, cost-effective, and agri-environmentally friendly approach in the "assisted bioremediation" strategy of DEHP-contaminated soils.

Physiological characteristics, rhizosphere soil properties, and root-related microbial communities of Trifolium repens L. in response to Pb toxicity

Trifolium repens L. (T. repens) is considered a potential phytoremediation species due to its large biomass and ability to accumulate and tolerate heavy metals. Lead (Pb) is an important heavy metal pollutant that can affect plant growth, photosynthesis, and enzyme activity. However, response mechanism of microorganisms in three root niches of metal tolerant plants to Pb is not completely understood. Therefore, in this study, a Pb poisoning model of T. repens was established with a Pb gradient (0, 1000 mg/kg, 2000 mg/kg, and 3000 mg/kg), and was used to evaluate growth and physiological responses, as well as enrichment and transport coefficients in T. repens, and explore the characteristics of rhizosphere soil and microbial composition of three root niches. We found that Pb stress caused oxidative injury, and inhibited photosynthesis in T. repens. 16S rDNA sequencing analysis showed that the richness of microbial communities in bulk soil was higher than that in rhizosphere soil both under Pb stress and Pb nonstress conditions. Moreover, Proteobacteria was dominant phylum in bulk and rhizosphere soils, and Proteobacteria and Cyanobacteria were dominant phylum in endophytic bacteria. For the first time, we systematically investigated the response of Pb from bulk soil to plant leaves. The results showed that microbial interaction existed between bulk and rhizosphere soil. Rhizosphere bacterium Haliangium was positively correlated with urease activity and soil nutrients. Endophytic bacterium Pseudomonas was positively correlated with plant biomass and played an important role in Pb tolerance of T. repens. In addition, endophytic bacteria formed complex correlation networks with growth and physiological indexes of both root and shoot, moreover the network in root was more complicated. Taken together, Pb stress dose-dependently inhibited the growth of plants. This study provided a theoretical basis for the further development of microbial cooperation with plant remediation of heavy metal contaminated soil.

Grass-legume mixtures maintain forage biomass under microbial diversity loss via gathering Pseudomonas in root zone soil

IMPORTANCE

Grass-legume mixtures are a common practice for establishing artificial grasslands, directly or indirectly contributing to the improvement of yield. In addition, this method helps maintain soil and plant health by reducing the use of chemical fertilizers. The impact of grass-legume mixtures on yield and its underlying microbial mechanisms have been a focus of scientific investigation. However, the benefits of mixtures in the context of soil microbial diversity loss remain a problem worthy of exploration. In this study, we examined different aboveground and belowground diversity combinations to elucidate the mechanisms by which grass-legume mixtures help maintain stable yields in the face of diversity loss. We identified the significantly enriched Pseudomonas genus microbial ASV53, which was gathered through homogeneous selection and served as a keystone in the co-occurrence network. ASV53 showed a strong positive correlation with biomass and the abundance of nitrogen-fixing genes. These findings provide a new theoretical foundation for utilizing grass-legume mixtures to enhance grass yields and address the challenges posed by diversity loss.

Structure and ecological function of the soil microbiome associated with 'Sanghuang' mushrooms suffering from fungal diseases

BACKGROUND

The most serious challenges in medicinal 'Sanghuang' mushroom production are the fungal diseases caused by various molds. Application of biological agents has been regarded as a potential crop disease management strategy. Here, the soil microbiome associated with 'Sanghuang' mushroom affected by fungal diseases grown under field cultivation (FC) and hanging cultivation (HC) was characterized using culture-dependent and culture-independent methods.

RESULTS

A total of 12,525 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and 168 pure cultures were obtained using high-throughput sequencing and a culture-dependent method, respectively. From high-throughput sequencing, we found that HC samples had more OTUs, higher α-diversity, and greater microbial community complexity than FC samples. Analysis of β-diversity divided the soil microbes into two groups according to cultivation mode. Basidiomycota (48.6%) and Ascomycota (46.5%) were the two dominant fungal phyla in FC samples, with the representative genera Trichoderma (56.3%), Coprinellus (29.4%) and Discosia (4.8%), while only the phylum Ascomycota (84.5%) was predominant in HC samples, with the representative genera Discosia (34.0%), Trichoderma (30.2%), Penicillium (14.9%), and Aspergillus (7.8%). Notably, Trichoderma was predominant in both the culture-independent and culture-dependent analyses, with Trichoderma sp. FZ0005 showing high host pathogenicity. Among the 87 culturable bacteria, 15 exhibited varying extents of antifungal activity against Trichoderma sp. FZ0005, with three strains of Bacillus spp. (HX0037, HX0016, and HX0039) showing outstanding antifungal capacity.

CONCLUSIONS

Overall, our results suggest that Trichoderma is the major causal agent of 'Sanghuang' fungal diseases and that Bacillus strains may be used as biocontrol agents in 'Sanghuang' cultivation.

Association between soil organic carbon and calcium in acidic grassland soils from Point Reyes National Seashore, CA

Organo-mineral and organo-metal associations play an important role in the retention and accumulation of soil organic carbon (SOC). Recent studies have demonstrated a positive correlation between calcium (Ca) and SOC content in a range of soil types. However, most of these studies have focused on soils that contain calcium carbonate (pH > 6). To assess the importance of Ca-SOC associations in lower pH soils, we investigated their physical and chemical interaction in the grassland soils of Point Reyes National Seashore (CA, USA) at a range of spatial scales. Multivariate analyses of our bulk soil characterisation dataset showed a strong correlation between exchangeable Ca (CaExch; 5-8.3 c.molc kg-1) and SOC (0.6-4%) content. Additionally, linear combination fitting (LCF) of bulk Ca K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra revealed that Ca was predominantly associated with organic carbon across all samples. Scanning transmission X-ray microscopy near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (STXM C/Ca NEXAFS) showed that Ca had a strong spatial correlation with C at the microscale. The STXM C NEXAFS K-edge spectra indicated that SOC had a higher abundance of aromatic/olefinic and phenolic C functional groups when associated with Ca, relative to C associated with Fe. In regions of high Ca-C association, the STXM C NEXAFS spectra were similar to the spectrum from lignin, with moderate changes in peak intensities and positions that are consistent with oxidative C transformation. Through this association, Ca thus seems to be preferentially associated with plant-like organic matter that has undergone some oxidative transformation, at depth in acidic grassland soils of California. Our study highlights the importance of Ca-SOC complexation in acidic grassland soils and provides a conceptual model of its contribution to SOC preservation, a research area that has previously been unexplored.

Rhizobium Soaking Promoted Maize Growth by Altering Rhizosphere Microbiomes and Associated Functional Genes

Rhizobium is a Gram-negative bacterium, which dissolves minerals, produces growth hormones, promotes root growth, and protects plants from different soil-borne pathogens. In the present study, roots, stalks, and fresh weight of maize (Zea mays L.) were significantly increased after soaking in Bradyrhizobium japonicum compared with the control. Subsequently, transcriptome sequencing results of the whole maize plant soaked in B. japonicum showed that multiple growth and development-related genes were up-regulated more than 100-fold compared to the control. Furthermore, the abundance of plant growth promoting bacteria, such as Acidobacteria Subgroup_6 and Chloroflexi KD4-96, were increased significantly. On the contrary, the abundance of multiple pathogens, such as Curvularia, Fusarium and Mycocentrospora, were significantly decreased. Moreover, inoculation with B. japonicum could inhibit the infection of the pathogen Fusarium graminearum in maize. These results suggest that soaking seeds in B. japonicum may affect the expression of maize growth and development-related genes as the bacteria changes the soil microorganism community structure. These findings may help to expand the application of B. japonicum in crop production and provide new opportunities for food security.

Investigating the recovery in ecosystem functions and multifunctionality after 10 years of natural revegetation on fly ash technosol

Technogenic soil (technosol) developed from coal fly ash (FA) landfilling has been considered a critical environmental problem worldwide. Drought-tolerant plants often naturally grow on FA technosol. However, the impact of these natural revegetations on the recovery of multiple ecosystem functions (multifunctionality) remains largely unexplored and poorly understood. Here we assessed the response of multifunctionality, including nutrient cycling (i.e., carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus), carbon storage, glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP), plant productivity, microbial biomass carbon (MBC), microbial processes (soil enzyme activities), and soil chemical properties (pH and electrical conductivity; EC) to FA technosol ten years' natural revegetation with different multipurpose species in Indo-Gangetic plain, and identified the key factors regulating ecosystem multifunctionality during reclamation. We evaluated four dominant revegetated species: Prosopis juliflora, Saccharum spontaneum, Ipomoea carnea, and Cynodon dactylon. We found that natural revegetation initiated the recovery of ecosystem multifunctionality on technosol, with greater recovery under higher biomass-producing species (P. juliflora and S. spontaneum) than lower biomass-producing ones (I. carnea and C. dactylon). The individual functions (11 of the total 16 variables) at higher functionality (70 % threshold) also exhibited this pattern among revegetated stands. Multivariate analyses revealed that most of the variables (except EC) significantly correlated with multifunctionality, indicating the capability of multifunctionality to consider the tradeoff between individual functions. We further performed structural equation modeling (SEM) to detect the effect of vegetation, pH, nutrients, and microbial activity (MBC and microbial processes) on ecosystem multifunctionality. Our SEM model predicted 98 % of the variation in multifunctionality and confirmed that the indirect effect of vegetation mediated by microbial activity is more important for multifunctionality than their direct effect. Collectively, our results demonstrate that FA technosol revegetation with high biomass-producing multipurpose species promotes ecosystem multifunctionality and emphasizes the significance of microbial activity in the recovery and maintenance of ecosystem attributes.

Microbial necromass under global change and implications for soil organic matter

Microbial necromass is an important source and component of soil organic matter (SOM), especially within the most stable pools. Global change factors such as anthropogenic nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) inputs, climate warming, elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (eCO₂ ), and periodic precipitation reduction (drought) strongly affect soil microorganisms and consequently, influence microbial necromass formation. The impacts of these global change factors on microbial necromass are poorly understood despite their critical role in the cycling and sequestration of soil carbon (C) and nutrients. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis to reveal general patterns of the effects of nutrient addition, warming, eCO₂ , and drought on amino sugars (biomarkers of microbial necromass) in soils under croplands, forests, and grasslands. Nitrogen addition combined with P and K increased the content of fungal (+21%), bacterial (+22%), and total amino sugars (+9%), consequently leading to increased SOM formation. Nitrogen addition alone increased solely bacterial necromass (+10%) because the decrease of N limitation stimulated bacterial more than fungal growth. Warming increased bacterial necromass, because bacteria have competitive advantages at high temperatures compared to fungi. Other global change factors (P and NP addition, eCO₂ , and drought) had minor effects on microbial necromass because of: (i) compensation of the impacts by opposite processes, and (ii) the short duration of experiments compared to the slow microbial necromass turnover. Future studies should focus on: (i) the stronger response of bacterial necromass to N addition and warming compared to that of fungi, and (ii) the increased microbial necromass contribution to SOM accumulation and stability under NPK fertilization, and thereby for negative feedback to climate warming.

Existence of antibiotic pollutant in agricultural soil: Exploring the correlation between microbiome and pea yield

Due to sewage irrigation, manure fertilizer application or other agricultural activities, antibiotics have been introduced into farmland as an emerging contaminant, existing with other agrochemicals. However, the potential influences of antibiotics on the efficiency of agrochemicals and crops health are still unclear. In this work, the effect of antibiotics on fertilization efficiency and pea yield was evaluated, and the mechanism was explored in view of soil microbiome. Nitrogen utilization and pea yield were decreased by antibiotics. In specific, the weight of seeds decreased 9.5 % by 5 mg/kg antibiotics and decreased 25.1 % by 50 mg/kg antibiotics. For N nutrient in pea, antibiotics resulted in 62.5 %-63.7 % decrease in amino acid content and 8.3 %-35.3 % decrease in inorganic-N content. Further research showed that antibiotics interfered with N cycle in soil, inhibiting urea decomposition and denitrification process by reducing function genes ureC, nirK and norB in soil, thus decreasing N availability. Meanwhile, antibiotics destroyed the enzyme function in N assimilation. This work evaluated the environmental risk of antibiotics from fertilization efficiency and N utilization in crop. Antibiotics could not only affect N cycle, limiting the decomposition of N fertilizer, but also affect N utilization in plants, thus affecting the yield and even the quality of leguminous crops.

Application of Seaweed Generates Changes in the Substrate and Stimulates the Growth of Tomato Plants

Ulva ohnoi is a cosmopolitan green seaweed with commercial potential given the biomass that may be generated. We evaluated the effects of substrate changes induced by U. ohnoi application on the vegetative response of tomato plants under greenhouse conditions. First, the decomposition dynamics and N release of the dry seaweed biomass were studied using the litterbag method. Subsequently, we evaluated the effect of seaweed powder (SP) or seaweed extract (SE) applications on substrate and plant growth. Additionally, the growth parameters responses evaluated were related to the changes in substrate properties associated with each treatment. The results showed that the dry seaweed biomass has a rapid rate of degradation (k = 0.07 day^-1) and N release (k = 0.024 day^-1). The SP application improved the physicochemical and biological characteristics of the substrate by increasing the availability of minerals, the fungi:bacteria ratio, and the growth morphophysiological parameters (length, area, dry and fresh weight), chlorophyll and mineral content. In contrast, SE treatment showed a positive effect on the root, mineral content, and soil microbes. This study highlights the agricultural potential of U. ohnoi powder as an alternative supplement that supports nutrition and promotes the vegetative growth of plants cultivated in soilless horticultural systems.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus cereus Isolated from Brazilian Cerrado Soil Act as Phosphate-Solubilizing Bacteria

The phosphate-solubilizing microorganism is essential for soil quality and plant development and can serve as an alternative to reduce such Brazilian needs for importing phosphate overseas. Here, we isolated and selected bacteria from Brazilian Cerrado soils capable of solubilize phosphate. We obtained 53 bacteria isolates, of which 23 could solubilize phosphate at a pH of 7.0, 17 could solubilize phosphate at a pH of 6.0, and 8 could solubilize at a pH of 5.5. Using 16S rRNA gene sequences, we identified nine bacteria species clustered in four groups: Bacillus sp., Pseudomonas sp., Priestia sp., and Klebsiella sp. Our results revealed that the UFT01 (P. aeruginosa) and UFT42 (B. cereus) isolates exhibited the best phosphate solubilization performance at all tested pH values. We further recorded higher levels of solubilization and phosphate availability six days after the soil inoculation with P. aeruginosa, and enzymatic analysis of the soil samples revealed that the P. aeruginosa-inoculated samples resulted in four-fold higher enzymatic activities when compared to non-inoculated soils. The B. cereus soil inoculation increased β-glucosidase activities and resulted in reduced the activities of arylsulfatase. Altogether, our findings demonstrated that P. aeruginosa and B. cereus isolated from Cerrado soils showed high phosphate solubilization potential.

Environmental effect of agriculture-related manufactured nano-objects on soil microbial communities

Agriculture-related manufactured nano-objects (MNOs) can revolutionize the crop production and help to achieve sustainable development goals. MNOs with diverse physico-chemical properties and ability to encapsulate and deliver active ingredients in controlled, targeted and stimuli responsive manner can enhance the efficiency while minimizing collateral damage to non-target organisms and environment. Application of MNOs in the form of nanopesticides and nanofertilizers is known to affect soil microbial communities both positively and negatively, but detailed studies with varying dose, type and environmental conditions are scarce. Therefore, it is imperative to understand the complex mechanisms and factors which shape the MNOs-microbial interactions through integrating state of the art technologies including omics (transcriptomics, metabolomics, and proteomics), artificial intelligence, and statistical frameworks. Lastly, we propose the idea of MNOs-mediated manipulation of soil microbiome to modify the soil microbial communities for improved microbial services. These microbial services, if harnessed appropriately, can revolutionize modern agriculture and help in achieving sustainable development goals.

Current controversies on mechanisms controlling soil carbon storage: implications for interactions with practitioners and policy-makers. A review

There is currently an intense debate about the potential for additional organic carbon storage in soil, the strategies by which it may be accomplished and what the actual benefits might be for agriculture and the climate. Controversy forms an essential part of the scientific process, but on the topic of soil carbon storage, it may confuse the agricultural community and the general public and may delay actions to fight climate change. In an attempt to shed light on this topic, the originality of this article lies in its intention to provide a balanced description of contradictory scientific opinions on soil carbon storage and to examine how the scientific community can support decision-making despite the controversy. In the first part, we review and attempt to reconcile conflicting views on the mechanisms controlling organic carbon dynamics in soil. We discuss the divergent opinions about chemical recalcitrance, the microbial or plant origin of persistent soil organic matter, the contribution of particulate organic matter to additional organic carbon storage in soil, and the spatial and energetic inaccessibility of soil organic matter to decomposers. In the second part, we examine the advantages and limitations of big data management and modeling, which are essential tools to link the latest scientific theories with the actions taken by stakeholders. Finally, we show how the analysis and discussion of controversies can guide scientists in supporting stakeholders for the design of (i) appropriate trade-offs for biomass use in agriculture and forestry and (ii) climate-smart management practices, keeping in mind their still unresolved effects on soil carbon storage.

The Impacts of Phosphorus-Containing Compounds on Soil Microorganisms of Rice Rhizosphere Contaminated by Lead

The cost effectiveness of using exogenous phosphorus to remediate heavy metals in soil, which would alter the structure of the soil microbial community, had been widely acknowledged. In the present study, phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) technology was taken as the breakthrough point, and rhizosphere soil microorganisms in different growth stages (jointing stage and maturity stage) of Minghui 86 (MH) and Yangdao No.6 (YD) rice were taken as the research objects. As revealed by the results, the rhizosphere soil microorganisms of MH and YD had distinct sensitivities to exogenous phosphorus and had a certain inhibitory effect on MH and YD enhancement. The sensitivity of rice root soil microorganisms to exogenous phosphorus also varied in different growth stages of rice. Bacteria were the dominant microorganism in the soil microbial community of rice roots, and the gain of exogenous phosphorus had a certain impact on the structure of the two soil microbial communities. Through analysis of the microbial community characteristics of MH rice and YD soil after adding exogenous phosphorus, further understanding was attained with respect to the effect of exogenous phosphorus on the microbial community characteristics of rice rhizosphere soil and the impact thereof on ecological functions.

Differences in soil physicochemical properties and rhizosphere microbial communities of flue-cured tobacco at different transplantation stages and locations

Rhizosphere microbiota play an important role in regulating soil physical and chemical properties and improving crop production performance. This study analyzed the relationship between the diversity of rhizosphere microbiota and the yield and quality of flue-cured tobacco at different transplant times (D30 group, D60 group and D90 group) and in different regions [Linxiang Boshang (BS) and Linxiang ZhangDuo (ZD)] by high-throughput sequencing technology. The results showed that there were significant differences in the physicochemical properties and rhizosphere microbiota of flue-cured tobacco rhizosphere soil at different transplanting times, and that the relative abundance of Bacillus in the rhizosphere microbiota of the D60 group was significantly increased. RDA and Pearson correlation analysis showed that Bacillus, Streptomyces and Sphingomonas were significantly correlated with soil physical and chemical properties. PIGRUSt2 function prediction results showed that compared with the D30 group, the D60 group had significantly increased metabolic pathways such as the superpathway of pyrimidine deoxyribonucleoside salvage, allantoin degradation to glyoxylate III and pyrimidine deoxyribonucleotides de novo biosynthesis III metabolic pathways. The D90 group had significantly increased metabolic pathways such as ubiquitol-8 biosynthesis (prokaryotic), ubiquitol-7 biosynthesis (prokaryotic) and ubiquitol-10 biosynthesis (prokaryotic) compared with the D60 group. In addition, the yield and quality of flue-cured tobacco in the BS region were significantly higher than those in the ZD region, and the relative abundance of Firmicutes and Bacillus in the rhizosphere microbiota of flue-cured tobacco in the BS region at the D60 transplant stage was significantly higher than that in the ZD region. In addition, the results of the hierarchical sample metabolic pathway abundance map showed that the PWY-6572 metabolic pathway was mainly realized by Paenibacillus, and that the relative abundance of flue-cured tobacco rhizosphere microbiota (Paenibacillus) participating in PWY-6572 in the D60 transplant period in the BS region was significantly higher than that in the ZD region. In conclusion, different transplanting periods of flue-cured tobacco have important effects on soil physical and chemical properties and rhizosphere microbial communities. There were significant differences in the rhizosphere microbiota and function of flue-cured tobacco in different regions, which may affect the performance and quality of this type of tobacco.

Soils in warmer and less developed countries have less micronutrients globally

Soil micronutrients are capital for the delivery of ecosystem functioning and food provision worldwide. Yet, despite their importance, the global biogeography and ecological drivers of soil micronutrients remain virtually unknown, limiting our capacity to anticipate abrupt unexpected changes in soil micronutrients in the face of climate change. Here, we analyzed >1300 topsoil samples to examine the global distribution of six metallic micronutrients (Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, Co and Ni) across all continents, climates and vegetation types. We found that warmer arid and tropical ecosystems, present in the least developed countries, sustain the lowest contents of multiple soil micronutrients. We further provide evidence that temperature increases may potentially result in abrupt and simultaneous reductions in the content of multiple soil micronutrients when a temperature threshold of 12-14°C is crossed, which may be occurring on 3% of the planet over the next century. Altogether, our findings provide fundamental understanding of the global distribution of soil micronutrients, with direct implications for the maintenance of ecosystem functioning, rangeland management and food production in the warmest and poorest regions of the planet.

Potential utilization of vitamin C industrial effluents in agriculture: Soil fertility and bacterial community composition

The potential of industrial effluents from vitamin C (VC) production was assessed for agricultural applications by monitoring plant growth, soil properties, and microbial community structure. The results demonstrated that two types of effluents-residue after evaporation (RAE) and concentrated bacterial solution after ultrafiltration (CBS)-had positive effects on the yield and VC content of pak choi. The highest yield and VC content were achieved with a combined RAE-CBS treatment (55.82 % and 265.01 % increase, respectively). The soil fertility was also enhanced by the application of RAE and CBS. Nitrate nitrogen and organic carbon contents in the soil were positively correlated with the RAE addition, while ammonium nitrogen and available phosphorus were positively correlated with the CBS addition. The diversity of bulk and rhizosphere soil bacterial communities increased significantly after the addition of RAE-CBS. The abundance of Sphingomonas and Rhizobium significantly increased after the RAE-CBS treatment, which affected aromatic compound hydrolysis and nitrogen fixation positively. Changes in plant growth and soil fertility were closely related to the upregulation of functional gene expression related to C, N, and P cycling. RAE and CBS application exerted various positive synergistic effects on plant growth, soil fertility, and bacterial community structure. Consequently, the study results confirmed the potential of RAE and CBS application in agriculture. This study provides an innovative solution for utilizing VC industrial wastewater in agriculture in a resourceful and economically beneficial manner while alleviating the corresponding environmental burden.

Research progress of rhizosphere microorganisms in Fritillaria L. medicinal plants

The soil's rhizosphere is a highly active place where the exchange of substances and information occurs among plants, soils, and microorganisms. The microorganisms involved are crucial to the activities of plant growth and development, metabolism, and reproduction. Fritillaria L. medicinal plants are unique Chinese medicinal ingredients, but the continuous cropping obstacles formed in the artificial planting process is severely harmful to the growth and development of these medicinal plants. In this review, we summarized the current species and distribution of Fritillaria L. in China, and analyzed the changes in microbial diversity (mainly among bacteria and fungi) in the rhizosphere of these plants under long-term continuous cropping. The fungi showed an increasing trend in the soil rhizosphere, resulting in the transition of the soil from the high-fertility "bacterial type" to the low-fertility "fungal type" as planting years increased. Furthermore, the interaction between Fritillaria L. medicinal plants and the rhizosphere microorganisms was reviewed, and promising applications for the rhizosphere microbiome in the cultivation of Fritillaria L. medicinal plants were suggested. It is expected that this review will facilitate the in-depth understanding of rhizosphere microorganisms in the growth, accumulation of active ingredients, and disease control of Fritillaria L.

Both specific plant functional type loss and vegetation change influence litter metallic element release in an alpine treeline ecotone

Climate warming changes the plant community composition and biodiversity. Dominate species or plant functional types (PFTs) loss may influence alpine ecosystem processes, but much uncertainty remains. This study tested whether loss of specific PFTs and vegetation variation would impact the metallic element release of mixed litter in an alpine treeline ecotone. Six representative PFTs in the alpine ecosystem on the eastern Tibetan Plateau were selected. Litterbags were used to determine the release of potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, manganese, zinc, copper, iron, and aluminum from litter loss of specific PFTs after 669 days of decomposition in coniferous forest (CF) and alpine shrubland (AS). The results showed that potassium, sodium, magnesium, and copper were net released, while aluminum, iron, and manganese were accumulated after 669 days. Functional type mixtures promoted the release of potassium, sodium, aluminum, and zinc (synergistic effect), while inhibiting the release of calcium, magnesium, and iron (antagonistic effect). Further, loss of specific plant functional type significantly affected the aluminum and iron release rates and the relatively mixed effects of the potassium, aluminum, and iron release rates. The synergistic effects on potassium, sodium, and aluminum in AS were greater than those in CF, while the antagonistic effect of manganese release in AS was lower than that in CF. Therefore, increased altitude may further promote the synergistic effect of potassium, sodium, and aluminum release and alleviate the antagonistic effect of manganese in mixed litter. Finally, the initial stoichiometric ratios regulate the mixed effects of elemental release rates, with the nitrogen-related stoichiometric ratios playing the most important role. The regulation of elements release by stoichiometric ratios requires more in-depth and systematic studies, which will help us to understand the influence mechanism of decomposition more comprehensively.

A review on the occurrence and influence of biodegradable microplastics in soil ecosystems: Are biodegradable plastics substitute or threat?

Plastic products are widely used around the world, but waste plastic is not reasonably managed and causes serious plastic pollution. Biodegradable plastics (BPs) provide an alternative to conventional plastics, but not all BPs can be completely degraded under natural conditions. Instead, they may break down into microplastics (MPs) faster than conventional plastics, posing an additional threat to soil environment. In this paper, the definition, applications, and degradation behaviors of BPs, including biodegradable microplastics (BMPs), are reviewed, and we comprehensively summarized the eco-toxicological effects of BMPs in soil ecosystems, in terms of physical and chemical properties of soil, soil nutrient cycling, soil bacterial and fungal communities, soil flora and fauna. The compound effects of BMPs and other pollutants were also addressed. The results revealed that BMPs made different or more severely effects compared to conventional MPs. Overall, this review aims to address gaps in knowledge, shed light on the ecological effects of BPs and BMPs in soil. BPs are not a perfect substitute to solve plastic pollution, and further exploration should focus on their generation, environmental behavior, ecological impact and whether BMPs cause more harm than conventional MPs.

Long-Term Effect of Pig Slurry and Mineral Fertilizer Additions on Soil Nutrient Content, Field Pea Grain and Straw Yield under Winter Wheat–Spring Barley–Field Pea Crop Rotation on Cambisol and Luvisol

Different fertilizers have different effects on soil chemistry and crop yields. In this paper, we analyzed how long-term and regular application of mineral fertilizers, pig slurry and their combinations (15 fertilizer treatments totally) affect soil pH, nutrient content and yield of field pea at two sites with different soil (cambisol and luvisol) and climatic conditions. The long-term trials evaluated in this paper were established in 1972 at Pernolec and Kostelec, Czech Republic. Results of the soil analyses (evaluated period) are from the years 2015–2020, covering two sequences of crop rotation (winter wheat–spring barley–field pea). The fertilizer treatments significantly affected the soil reaction; application of mineral fertilizers and their combinations resulted in the lowest pH values. On the other hand, the same treatments provided the highest yields and left the highest pool of nutrients in the soil. Pig slurry can provide the same yields of field pea as mineral NPK fertilizers, without a negative effect on soil reaction. Analyzing the mineral fertilizers only, a reasonable dose of N (according to the linear-plateau model) can range from 73 and 97 kg ha−1 N in Pernolec, according to the weather conditions.

Plant Nitrogen Uptake From Insect Frass Is Affected by the Nitrification Rate as Revealed by Urease and Nitrification Inhibitors

Insect protein production is considered a sustainable alternative to livestock protein which furthermore utilizes waste streams. Its production can have positive but also potentially negative environmental effects, which require evaluation. Frass, the byproduct of insect production, is regarded an efficient organic fertilizer or soil amendment. However, several studies report negative frass effects on plant growth and nitrogen (N) cycling. Therefore, a pot trial was carried out which sought to understand N release from frass and subsequent growth and nutrient uptake of Italian ryegrass. Mealworm frass (MWF) or buffalo worm frass (BFW) was applied at two rates (1.5 and 3% w/w) to a soil-sand mix. To evaluate N release processes, frass was applied alone, with a nitrification inhibitor (NI), a urease inhibitor (UI), or both (NI+UI). Plant N, nutrient uptake and soil inorganic N were measured at the experiment's end. To gauge whether altered N fluxes induced changes in the microbial community, soil microbial biomass, bacterial/archaeal abundances and ergosterol content as a fungal biomarker, were determined. Both frass types and application rates stimulated microbial growth and N mineralization. The 3% rate inhibited seed germination, possibly due to salinity or ammonia toxicity. At the 1.5% rate, both frass types were effective fertilizers. MWF led to higher biomass and nutrient uptake, owing to its higher extractable nutrient concentrations. The 3% rate caused nitrite accumulation in the absence of NI. NI improved plant biomass, nutrient uptake, stimulated archaeal and bacterial abundances and prevented nitrite accumulation. UI reduced N mineralization, showing that a substantial fraction of frass organic N is ureic. UI enhanced fungal contribution to the microbial biomass, revealing the importance of bacteria in frass N mineralization processes when UI is not applied. NI and UI combined, induced greater N release from frass than UI or NI alone. Our study demonstrated the usefulness of NI and UI in studying N release from frass. NI can improve plant N uptake and minimize N losses following frass application, reducing its potentially negative effects. UI can retard N release from frass, allowing its application as a slow-release fertilizer, but should not be used concurrently with NI.

Biological Indicators of Soil Quality under Different Tillage Systems in Retisol

Soil microorganism diversity has a close relation with soil function, and the changes in the composition of the soil microbial population can directly affect it. The aim of this study was to identify the bacterial community composition and determine the main soil chemical and physical properties formed by the different tillage systems. In the experiment, we analyzed the combination of three tillage systems and four organic fertilizers. Soil samples were taken from the two layers of the soil profile: the upper 0–10 cm and the lower 10–20 cm. The composition and diversity of soil bacterial communities were assessed by the sequencing of 16S rRNA genes. Results revealed that the highest biodiversity was found in the soil with shallow ploughless tillage and enriched with farmyard manure. Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria were the dominant bacterial species across all treatments. Their total abundance varied between 26% and 36% in the different analyzed agroecosystems. For the Dystric Bathygleyic Glossic Retisol, shallow ploughless tillage is the most suitable tillage system, as it creates favorable conditions for the accumulation of organic carbon in the soil under the Western Lithuania climate conditions.

Black Soldier Fly Diet Impacts Soil Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Frass Applied as Fertilizer

Increased global production of animal-based protein results in high greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and other adverse consequences for human and planetary health. Recently, commercial insect rearing has been claimed a more sustainable source of animal protein. However, this system also leaves residues called frass, which—depending on the insect diet—is rich in carbon (C) and nitrogen (N), and could thus be used as fertilizer in agriculture. The impact of this kind of fertilizer on soil GHG emissions is yet unknown. Therefore, we investigated the effect of black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens L.) frass derived from a carbohydrate (Carb-) or a protein (Prot-) based diet applied at two different application rates to an arable soil on C and N fluxes and microbial properties in a 40-day incubation experiment. CO2, N2O, NO, N2, CH4, water extractable organic C (WEOC), and inorganic N were continuously measured quantitatively. At the end of the incubation, microbial biomass (MB), stoichiometry, community composition, and abundance of functional genes were assessed. Along with a strong increase in WEOC and CO2, Carb-frass caused strong initial N2O emissions associated with high N and C availability. In contrast, Prot-frass showed lower CO2 emissions and N2O release, although soil nitrate levels were higher. At the end of incubation, MB was significantly increased, which was more pronounced following Carb-frass as compared to Prot-frass application, and at higher amendment rates. Fungal abundance increased most from both frass types with an even stronger response at higher application rates, whereas bacterial abundance rose following Carb-frass as compared to Prot-application. Abundance of functional genes related to ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and archaea were enhanced by high frass application but did not clearly differ between frass types. C use efficiency of microorganisms, as revealed by the metabolic quotient, was most strongly reduced in the high Prot-frass application rate. Overall, insect diet influenced available C and N in frass and thus affected mineralization dynamics, GHG emissions, and microbial growth.
