Phycocyanin-loaded silver nanoparticles activated with photodynamic therapy and Nd: YAG laser for caries-affected dentin disinfection: Impact on Streptococcus mutans survival rate and shear bond strength to the tooth-colored restorative material

AIMS

To assess the impact of various cavity disinfectants PC-PDT (Phycocyanin activated by Photodynamic therapy), PC@AgNPs-PDT (Phycocyanin and silver nanoparticles activated by PDT), and Nd: YAG laser on the survival rate of S.mutans and the bond integrity of composite restoration METHODS: Sixty human mandibular molars that scored 4 and 5 based on ICDAS criteria were included. The infected dentin was removed while the CAD was preserved based on visual, tactile, and staining assessment. S.mutans were cultured on the CAD of twenty samples. All the specimens were indiscriminately distributed into four groups based on cavity disinfection (n=20 each includes n = 5 each group incubated with S.mutans) Group 1: CHX, Group 2: Nd:YAG laser, Group 3: PC-PDT and Group 4: PC@AgNPs-PDT. S.mutans survival rate was assessed for each group(n = 5). Forty samples underwent composite bonding for SBS and failure mode assessment using universal testing machine (UTM) and stereomicroscope. The calculations for the mean and standard deviation (SD) and their comparison among different groups were performed using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey post hoc test (p ≤ 0.05) RESULTS: CAD surface treated disinfected with PC@AgNPs-PDT yielded the lowest survival rates (0.13 ± 0.05 CFU/ml) and highest SBS (17.23 ± 1.45 MPa). Group 1 (CHX) unveiled the highest survival rate of S.mutans (0.33 ± 0.12 CFU/ml). However, Group 2 (Nd:YAG Laser) (11.87 ± 0.67 MPa) presented the lowest SBS CONCLUSION: The combination of Phycocyanin loaded with silver nanoparticles and activated with Photodynamic therapy demonstrates the highest antimicrobial potential and bond strength of composite restorations.

Evaluation of the impact of the latest root canal disinfectant, that is carbon quantum dots (CQDs), synchronized microbubble-photodynamic activation (SYMPA), and Nd: YAG laser along with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as a final irrigant on the Marten hardness (MH), smear layer (SL) removal, and extrusion bond strength (EBS) of zirconia post to the canal dentin. Eighty intact single-rooted premolars were obtained and disinfected using 0.5% chloramine-T solution. Root canal preparation was performed using ProTaper files followed by obturation. The post space was prepared for prefabricated zirconia post and all the teeth were randomly divided into four groups based on the disinfection used (n = 20 each) Group 1: 5.25% NaOCl + 17% EDTA (Control), Group 2: Nd: YAG laser + 17% EDTA, Group 3: SYMPA + 17% EDTA, and Group 4: CQDs + 17% EDTA. MH, SL removal, and EBS of zirconia post-bonded to root dentin were performed using a microhardness tester, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and universal testing machine, respectively. Both intragroup and intergroup comparisons were performed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and posthoc-Tukey test for significant difference (p < .05). Group 2 samples (Nd: YAG laser + 17% EDTA) (0.24 ± 0.06 GPa) exhibited highest values of MH. Samples in group 3 (SYMPA + 17% EDTA) treated teeth unveiled the lowest MH scores (0.13 ± 0.02 GPa). Moreover, the coronal third of Group 3 specimens (SYMPA and 17% EDTA) (1.54 ± 0.31) eliminated SL from the canal with the greatest efficacy as well as presented the highest EBS (10.13 ± 0.69 MPa). However, the apical third of Group 1 samples (5.25% NaOCl + 17% EDTA) (2.95 ± 0.33) exhibited the least efficient elimination of SL from the radicular dentin as well as the lowest bond strength (5.11 ± 0.19 MPa) of zirconia post to the dentin. The SYMPA technique with 17% EDTA proved highly effective in removing the SL from canal dentin and enhancing the EBS of zirconia posts. The coronal third of Group 3 (SYMPA + 17% EDTA) samples unveiled the highest zirconia post-bond integrity score to the canal dentin. Cohesive failure was a dominant failure type among different experimental groups.

Effect of canal medicaments Triple Antibiotic Paste, Bio-C Temp, and Nano-Silver Gel activated by visible blue light on canal dentin microhardness and extrusion bond strength of AH plus sealer: A SEM and EDX analysis

Assessment of contemporary canal medicaments (Triple antibiotic paste (TAP), Bio-C Temp, and Nano silver gel activated by visible blue light on the dentin microhardness (MH) and push-out bond strength (PBS) of AH plus endodontic sealer METHOD: : Sixty extracted premolars were obtained and decontaminated. Canal cleaning and shaping were performed. The samples were randomly allocated into four groups based on the intracanal medicaments. Group 1= CH paste, Group 2= TAP, Group 3= Bio-C Temp, and Group 4= Nano-silver gel activated by visible blue light. MH assessment was performed using a Vickers Microhardness tester. Forty specimens, ten from each group underwent root canal obturation. PBS and failure mode evaluation were performed. ANOVA and Post Hoc Tukey test were utilized to conduct intra and inter-group comparisons RESULTS: : The maximum outcome of surface hardness was presented by Group-3 (Bio-C Temp®) specimens. However, minimum scores of MH were displayed by Group 1 (CH) treated teeth. The highest outcomes of EBS were exhibited by the cervical third of Group 3 (Bio-C Temp®) samples. The apical section of Group 4 Teeth with Nano Silver gel activated by visible blue light revealed the lowest scores of bond integrity CONCLUSION: : Bio-C Temp and TAP proved to be better intracanal medicament than other tested groups in terms of the push-out bond strength of the sealer. PEEK and glass fiber post pushout bond strength and vickers hardness of canal disinfected with curcumin photosensitizer activated by microbubble emulsion and sodium-hypochlorite with EDTA

Impact of different post-space disinfectants (Saline, Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) followed by ethylene-diamine-tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) and curcumin activated by microbubble emulsion (MBE) on the Vickers hardness (VH) of root canal dentin and extrusion bond strength (EBS) of Glass fiber post (GFP) and PEEK post.

METHODS

Ninety maxillary central incisors having fully formed roots were included. After the specimen's disinfection, root canal treatment was completed. Post space was prepared by removing gutta-percha using gates glidden drills. Teeth were then arbitrarily allocated into three groups based on the methods of disinfection regime used. Group 1: Saline, Group 2: NaOCl+ EDTA and Group 3: Curcumin activated by MBE (n = 30). Analysis of VH of radicular dentin was performed using a micro-Vickers tester on ten samples from each group. After post-space disinfection, twenty specimens from each group were further divided into two subgroups (n = 10) In group-1A 2A, and 3A, GFP was used. Whereas, prefabricated PEEK posts were used in 1B, 2B, and 3B subgroups. The PBS and failure modes were performed using a universal testing machine and stereomicroscope respectively. Data was analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey post hoc test to identify significant variations among groups concerning the MH and EBS of the different posts used (p = 0.05).

RESULTS

Group 2 (5.25 % NaOCl + 17 % EDTA) (0.15 ± 0.02 GPa) treated specimens presented lowest scores of VH. However, Group 1 (Saline) irrigated canals displayed the highest scores of surface hardness (0.25 ± 0.07 GPa). Additionally, a cervical third of 3A (CP activated by MBE + GFP) (11.22 ± 0.79 MPa) presented the highest scores of bond integrity. Whereas Group 1B (Saline + PEEK post) treated specimens presented the lowest scores of PBS (4.15 ± 0.15 MPa).

CONCLUSION

Curcumin activated by microbubble emulsion for disinfection of canal dentin demonstrated favorable VH. Similarly, glass fiber post-cemented in radicular walls disinfected with curcumin activated with MBE showed promising post-bond integrity to the canal dentin.

Antibacterial efficacy of NanoCare, Fullerene (C60) activated by UV light, and Morinda Oleifera against S.Mutans and bond integrity of composite resin to caries affected dentin

Assessment of the impact of contemporary disinfection techniques Moringa Oleifera (M. Oleifera), NanoCare Plus Silver Gold® (Nanocare), and Fullerene (C60) on survival rates of S.Mutans and shear bond strength (SBS) of composite to the carious affected dentin (CAD) MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty mandibular molars having caries progression till the middle 1/3rd of the dentin were disinfected. The CAD surface of twenty samples was inoculated with S.mutans. Based on different disinfection regimens samples were arbitrarily assigned to four groups (n:15) Group 1: 2 % CHX, Group 2:NanoCare, Group 3:Fullerene (C60), and Group 4 (M. Oleifera. This was followed by calculating the survival rate of S.mutans. Ten samples from each group were then restored with composite restoration and thermocycled. Assessment of SBS and failure mode was performed using a universal testing machine and stereomicroscope at 40X magnification. Statistical significance among groups was assessed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's test at a significance level of p = 0.05 RESULTS: Group 2 samples treated with NanoCare exhibited the lowest survival rate (0.39 ± 0.02 CFU/ml) of S.Mutans. However, Group 1 (CHX) samples exhibited the highest survival count (0.51±0.10 CFU/ml). Furthermore, the highest composite to CAD bond was observed in Group 3 Fullerene(C60) (18.44±0.25 MPa) samples and the lowest SBS was observed in Group 1 (CHX) (12.48±1.69 MPa) CONCLUSION: Fullerene(C60) and Moringa Oleifera extract hold promise as potential substitutes for chlorhexidine (CHX) in clinical applications, offering the potential for improved S.Mutans elimination and enhanced bond strength to CAD surface.

Bleached enamel reversal using grape seed extract, green tea, curcumin-activated photodynamic therapy, and Er: YAG on microleakage and bond integrity of composite material bonded to the enamel surface

Bleached enamel reversal using antioxidants sodium ascorbate (SA), Green tea extract (GTE), grape seed extract (GSE), Curcumin photosensitizer (CP) and Er: YAG laser on the adhesive strength and marginal leakage of composite material bonded to the bleached enamel surface.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Enamel surface of hundred and twenty sound human first premolar teeth was cleansed using pumice and bleached with 35 % hydrogen peroxide. The samples were randomly divided into 5 groups based on the antioxidants used. n = 20 Group 1 (Control): No antioxidant agent, Group 2: 10 % SA solution, Group 3: 6.5 % GSE, Group 4: 5 % GTE, Group 5: Er: YAG laser and Group 6: CP. Following reversal, the composite was built and cured for 40 s. All the specimens were stored in distilled water at room temperature for 1 day. Microleakage, SBS, and failure mode were analyzed. Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, one-way analysis of variance, and Tukey's multiple post hoc test were used to analyze the data statistically.

RESULTS

Group 2 (SA) (20.11 ± 5.79 nm) exhibited minimum value of microleakage and highest SBS (10.22 ± 1.62 MPa). Whereas, Group 1 (No antioxidant agent) displayed maximum scores of marginal leakage (28.11±8.89 nm) and lowest SBS (7.02 ± 1.22 MPa).

CONCLUSION

CP, GTE and GSE can be used as a potential alternative to the commonly used SA solution to reverse the negative impact of bleaching on the enamel surface. The use of reversal agents CP, GTE and GSE improves bond values with a decrease in microleakage scores However, future studies are still warranted to conclude the outcomes of the existing study.

Canal disinfection using photo-chemically activated micro-bubble emulsion, Emblica officinalis, and Nd: YAP laser on smear layer and push-out bond strength of resin-based root canal sealer to the radicular dentin

AIMS

Evaluation of the effects of the latest root canal disinfectants i.e., Micro-bubble emulsion (MBE), Neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum perovskite (Nd: YAP), Emblica officinalis (E. officinalis) on the removal of smear layer (SL) and push out bond strength (PBS) of resin-based root canal sealer to the radicular dentin.

METHODS

The coronal portion of sixty single-rooted human mandibular premolar teeth was precisely sectioned at the cementoenamel junction. The canals were prepared to utilize ProTaper universal rotary files till F3. All the study specimens were divided into four groups based on the disinfection regime (n = 15) Group 1: 5.25% NaOCl, Group 2: MBE, Group 3: Nd: YAP laser and Group 4: E. officinalis extract. All the canals were then finally irrigated using 17% EDTA solution as a final disinfecting agent. SL removal assessment was performed on five samples from each group using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Ten samples from each group were then filled with root canal filling material and the roots were sectioned. Push-out test and failure mode analysis were performed using the universal testing machine (UTM) and stereomicroscope respectively. The mean scores of PBS and SL removal were compared using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Post Hoc Tukey's HSD test p = 0.05.

RESULTS

Group-2 (MBE + EDTA) coronal section (1.50 ± 0.23) exhibited the most effective eradication of SL from the canal space. The apical third of Group-1 (NaOCl+EDTA) (2.68 ± 0.82) samples demonstrated the least effective removal of SL from the radicular canal. The maximum score of PBS of AH plus sealer to the canal dentin was exhibited by the coronal section of Group-2 (MBE + EDTA) (9.55 ± 0.45 MPa) samples. However, the apical third of Group-1 (NaOCl+ EDTA) specimens (5.16 ± 0.32 MPa) demonstrated the minimum EBS.

CONCLUSION

MBE+ EDTA displayed better smear layer removal and bond integrity of AH plus sealer to the root canal dentin. Nd: YAP+ EDTA laser and E.officinalis displayed comparable outcomes to that of control NaOCl+ EDTA.

To evaluate the impact of conditioning protocols, aluminum trioxide (Al2O3), Er:YAG laser (EYL), and Rosebengal (RB), on the surface roughness (Ra) and shear bond strength (SBS) of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) attached to composite restorations.

METHOD

Eighty PEEK discs in total were produced and then divided into four groups (n = 20). Group1:Sulfuric acid (SA), Group 2: PDT (RB), Group 3: Al2O3, Group 4 EYL, respectively. The Ra of PEEK discs was evaluated using the surface profilometer. After being luted, the discs were attached to composite resin discs. After that, samples were put to SBS testing on a Universal testing apparatus. A stereo microscope was also used to evaluate the type of breakdown. The data were analyzed using Tukey's test and one-way analysis of variance.

RESULTS

The SA treated group exhibited the highest Ra. Nevertheless, the RB specimens activated by PDT treatment had the lowest mean Ra score. The group that received the treatment of SA exhibited the highest average score of SBS. In contrast, specimens treated with PDT and activated by RB exhibited the lowest levels of bond fidelity. Cohesive failure emerges as the prevailing kind of fracture within the various groups subjected to testing.

CONCLUSION

The utilization of Al2O3, RB activated by PDT, and EYL shows promise as a viable substitute for Sulfuric acid in enhancing the bond integrity of composite cement and surface roughness in PEEK materials.

Poly-Ether Ether-Ketone Post Conditioned with Sulfuric Acid, Rose Bengal Activated by Photodynamic Therapy and Sandblasting on Pushout Bond Strength to Radicular Dentin Luted with Methyl Methacrylate and Composite-Based Cement

Objective: Assessment of post surface conditioners [sulfuric acid (SA), Rose Bengal (RB), and sandblasting (SB)] and different luting cements [methyl methacrylate (MMA)-based cement and composite-based cement] on pushout bond strength (PBS) of poly-ether ether-ketone (PEEK) post bonded to canal dentin. Materials and methods: Endodontic treatment was performed on 120 single-rooted human premolar teeth. The preparation of the post space was performed and 4 mm of gutta-percha was retained in the apical region of the root. One hundred and twenty PEEK posts were fabricated from a PEEK blank utilizing a Computer aided design-Computer aided manufacture (CAD-CAM) system. The PEEK posts were allocated randomly into four groups based on post surface conditioning (n = 30). Group A: SA, Group B: RB, Group C: SB, and Group D: No conditioning (NC). Each group was further divided into two subgroups based on the luting cement used for bonding (n = 15). Group A1, B1, C1, and D1 specimens were cemented using composite-based resin cement. However, Group A2, B2, C2, and D2 posts were luted with MMA-based resin cement. PBS assessment using a universal testing machine was performed. Failure modes were analyzed under a stereomicroscope. The data relating to the effects of surface treatment and luting types of cement were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post hoc test (p = 0.05). Results: Coronal section of Group B2: RB+Super-Bond C&B [9.61 ± 0.75 megapascals (MPa)] displayed the highest bond scores of PEEK after root dentin. Whereas it was also discovered that Group D1: NC+Panavia®V5 (2.05 ± 0.72 MPa) presented the lowest PBS scores. Intergroup comparison analysis revealed that Group A2: SA+Super-Bond C&B and Group B2: RB+Super-Bond C&B displayed no significant difference in their bond scores. Conclusions: RB and SA possess the potential to be used as a PEEK post conditioner. MMA-based cement displayed better performance than composite-based cement.

Use of final irrigants MTAD, Salvedora Perscia, Malachite green, and Ti-sapphire laser on push-out bond strength of Zirconia post

Evaluation of the push-out bond strength (PBS) of zirconia post-bonded to radicular dentin after using different final irrigants (MTAD, Malachite green (MG), Ti-sapphire laser and Salvadora persica (S.persica).

MATERIAL AND METHOD

Forty human permanent single-rooted were decoronated above the cement-enamel junction. An experienced endodontist performed all the root canal instrumentation using ProTaper universal rotary files. Canals were irrigated using 5.25% NaOCl solution followed by EDTA as a final sterilant. Obturation with gutta-percha using AH Plus sealer was performed. Post-space preparation was completed using Gates Glidden and specimens were randomly assigned to four groups based on the final disinfectant received (n=10). Group 1: 5.25% NaOCl + MTAD, group 2: 5.25% NaOCl + MG, group 3: 5.25% NaOCl +Ti-sapphire laser, and group 4: 5.25% NaOCl + S. persica. The chemically polymerized resin was used to lute zirconia posts. PBS and failure mode analysis were performed using a universal testing machine and stereomicroscope at 40X magnification. Data were compared between the two groups with 95% CI using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with the Tukey post hoc test. p=0.05.

RESULTS

Group4(5.25% NaOCl+ S.persica) specimens demonstrated the maximum (8.94±0.14 MPa) bond strength. Conversely, the apical third of Group 2 (5.25% NaOCl+ MG) (2.87±0.15 MPa) samples revealed the minimum bond strength scores. Intergroup comparison exposed that Group 1 (1.3% NaOCl+ MTAD), Group 3 (5.25% NaOCl+Ti-sapphire laser), and Group 4 (5.25% NaOCl+ S. persica) at all three-thirds unveiled no significant difference in PBS (p<0.05).

CONCLUSION

Ti-sapphire laser and Salvedora Persica possess the potential to be used as a final root canal irrigant to improve the push-out bond strength of zirconia post-to-root dentin.

The adhesive strength of fiber post-to-canal dentin with Aniline green, Fotoenticine activated by PDT, green tea, and ozone as a final irrigant

The effect of novel final disinfection protocols Malachite green (MG), Fotoenticine® (FTC), Green tea extract (GTE), and Ozonated water (OW) on the bond strength of prefabricated glass fiber posts (PGFP) adhered to canal dentin.

MATERIAL AND METHOD

The canals of fifty premolars with closed apices were cleansed and obturated. The specimens were randomly assigned to one of five groups based on the final irrigant used, with the control group receiving NaOCl+EDTA and the experimental groups receiving MG, FTC, OW, and GTE. The GFP was cemented with a self-etching, dual-cure paste; the bond strength was estimated with a universal testing machine; and failure analysis was conducted with a stereomicroscope.

RESULTS

The highest PBS was observed in the coronal third of Group 4 (using ozonated water as the final irrigant), whereas the lowest bond integrity was observed in the apical section of Group 2 (1.02-0.54 MPa) using Malachite green as the final irrigant. Group 1, Group 4, and Group 5 exhibited no significant difference in the bond integrity of GFP to dentin when compared to Group 2 (p>0.05). In addition, comparable bond score values were obtained for Groups 2 and 3 (p>0.05).

CONCLUSION

The results of this study suggest that OW and GTE may be effective final disinfectants for root canals, as they increase the bond strength of resin-luting cement.

Pretreatment of Root Dentin Using Photon-Induced Photoacoustic Streaming, Photodynamic Therapy, and Riboflavin with EDTA as a Final Irrigant to Improve Bond Integrity of Glass Fiber Post

Objective: To evaluate the outcome of post space disinfection using Er,Cr:YSGG laser (ECYL), riboflavin photosensitizer (RFP), and photon-induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS) along with ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) as final irrigant on the bond values of glass fiber post (GFP) to the canal wall. Materials and methods: Forty human mandibular premolars were subjected to root canal treatment after decoronation till the cementoenamel junction. Post space was prepared using a Gates-Glidden drill leaving 4 mm of gutta perch at the apical third of the root section. Random allocation of samples was performed into four groups based on the post space disinfection (n = 10 each): Group 1: 1% RFP and 17% EDTA, group 2: 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and 17% EDTA (control), group 3: PIPS and 17% EDTA, and group 4: ECYL and 17% EDTA. GFP was luted using Rely X Unicem. A universal testing machine and stereomicroscope were used to assess the push-out bond strength (PBS) and failure mode, respectively. Analysis of variance determined the PBS amid different experimental groups at three root levels. Multiple group comparison using means of tested groups was identified using post hoc Tukey. Results: The coronal third of group 2 (5.25% NaOCl +17% EDTA) demonstrated the highest PBS (8.83 ± 0.11 MPa). However, the lowest bond integrity (4.15 ± 0.52 MPa) was displayed in an apical third of group 1 (RFP +17% EDTA). The intergroup comparison revealed that 5.25% NaOCl +17% EDTA at all three levels demonstrated comparable outcomes of PBS with PIPS +17% EDTA and ECYL +17% EDTA specimens (p > 0.05). However, riboflavin +17% EDTA demonstrated the lowest bond strength (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Er,Cr: YSGG and PIPS in combination with 17% EDTA demonstrated comparable outcomes of bond score with those of conventional gold standard irrigation regime 5.25% NaOCl.

Dentin disinfection and adhesive bond strength using modified photoactivated carbon nanoparticles

The present study aimed to investigate the bond integrity and disinfection efficacy of Methylene blue(MB) alone, MB-PDT (Photodynamic therapy), MB@ carbon nanoparticles (CP)-PDT, and Cr, Cr: YSGG (ECL) against lactobacilli in Caries-affected dentin (CAD) MATERIAL AND METHODS: Methods consisted of Shear bond strength (SBS), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), methods of disinfection, and failure analysis. CAD samples were prepared and biofilm formed on the specimens randomly allocated into five groups based on disinfection. Group 1: CHX; Group 2: MB; Group 3: MB-PDT: group 4: MB@CP-PDT and group 5: ECL. After disinfection Colony forming units were measured and specimens were restored and positioned under a universal testing machine (UTM). Failure analysis was performed using a stereomicroscope. The difference in survival rate was assessed using the Kruskal-Walis test. Mean and standard deviation for bond values after different methods of disinfection was evaluated using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Post Hoc Tukey. The significance level was p<0.05 RESULTS: Morphological analysis revealed that CPs under SEM are flat discs with edged irregular shapes. EDX analyses show a spike indicating carbon particles by more than 95%. MB@CP-PDT displayed the highest reduction in lactobacillus levels in comparison to the other disinfection methods. The highest SBS was exhibited by the CAD sample disinfected with ECL. The lowest SBS values in CAD specimens after cavity cleansing with MB alone. The predominant failure type in CAD disinfected with MB alone, ECL CHX, MB-PDT, and MB@CP-PDT was adhesive.

CONCLUSION

The use of MB@CP-PDT showed high antibacterial potency against lactobacillus but demonstrated bond values similar to CHX. Use of Er, Cr: YSGG showed considerable effectiveness against lactobacillus along with the highest bond values.

Surface conditioning of PEEK post using Nd: YVO4 laser, Photodynamic therapy, and sulfuric acid on the pushout bond strength to canal dentin

AIM

To assess the push-out bond strength (PBS) of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) post-to-root dentin using post-surface conditioners i.e., Neodymium-doped yttrium orthovanadate (Nd: YVO4) and Riboflavin (RF) and Rose Bengal (RB) mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) compared to sulfuric acid (SA).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Decoronation of forty human single-rooted premolar teeth was performed. Followed by chamber opening, working length (WL) was established at 15 mm. Root canal preparation was completed using ProTaper Ni-Ti rotary system till F3 finishing file along with root canal disinfection. The canals were dried with paper cones followed by obturation using gutta-percha (GP) and AH sealer. Post space was prepared by drilling out 11 mm of GP using a Gates Glidden drill #3. PEEK posts were fabricated using the CAD-CAM system and then randomly allocated into 4 groups based on the post-surface conditioning (n=10). Group 1: SA, group 2: PDT RF, group 3: PDT RB, and group 4: Nd: YVO4 laser. The PEEK post was then cemented in their respective canal. PBS and failure mode assessment were performed using a universal testing machine and stereomicroscope at 40x magnification. The SBS data set was subjected to a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's Post Hoc test at a significance level of 0.05.

RESULTS

The samples in group 4 (Nd: YVO4 laser) coronal third (7.99±0.24 MPa) demonstrated the highest PBS. The apical third of samples in group 1 PEEK post surface conditioned with SA (5.15± 0.52 MPa) exhibited the minimum values of PBS. Intergroup comparison analysis showed that samples in group 1 (SA), group 2 (RF activated by PDT), group 3 (RB activated by PDT), and group 4 (Nd: YVO4 laser) demonstrated comparable outcomes of bond scores (p>0.05) CONCLUSION: Neodymium-doped yttrium orthovanadate (Nd: YVO4) and riboflavin and Rose bengal activated by photodynamic therapy (PDT) have been investigated as potential alternatives for the surface conditioning of PEEK (polyetheretherketone) posts.

Use of final irrigant Potassium Titanyl Phosphate laser; Sapindus Mukorossi and Fotoenticine on the bond values of zirconia post-to-canal dentin

Assessment of the efficacy of final root canal irrigants Sapindus mukorossi (SM), Potassium titanyl phosphate laser (KTPL), and Fotoenticine (FTC) on the push-out bond strength (PBS) of zirconia post.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The root canal procedure was initiated using the 10 K file and the working length was determined on single-rooted human premolar teeth after decoration. The canals were then enlarged using ProTaper universal system and filled using single cone gutta-percha (GP) and AH Plus resin sealer. Post space was prepared by removing 10mm of GP from the canal. All the teeth were then allocated into four groups based on the final irrigating regime used (n=10) Group 1: 5.25% NaOCl+17% EDTA, Group 2: 5.25% NaOCl + KTPL, Group 3: 5.25% NaOCl + FTC and Group 4: 5.25% NaOCl+ SM. Zirconia posts were cemented in the canal space. The specimens were sectioned and implanted in auto-polymerizing acrylic resin. A universal testing machine and stereomicroscope at 40x magnification were used for PBS and failure mode analysis. ANOVA and Tukey post hoc test were used to make group comparisons(p=0.05).

RESULTS

Group 4 (5.25% NaOCl+ SM) coronal section displayed the highest PBS (9.29±0.24 MPa). However, group 3 (5.25% NaOCl+ FTC) apical third (4.08±0.14 MPa) showed the lowest bond values. Group 2 (5.25% NaOCl+ KTP laser) and Group 3 at all three-thirds unveiled no significant difference in PBS(p>0.05). However, Group 1 (5.25% NaOCl+17%EDTA) and Group 4 displayed comparable outcomes of bond strength(p>0.05) CONCLUSION: Sapindus mukorossi has the ability to be used as a final root canal irrigant alternative to EDTA. However, future studies are still required to conclude the outcomes of existing research.

Different cavity disinfectant efficacy against S.Mutans and shear bond strength of caries affected dentin bonded to resin restoration

The existing study aimed to assess the survival rate of S.mutans and shear bond strength (SBS) of resin adhesive restoration bonded to carious affected dentin (CAD) after using different cavity disinfectants (Chitosan, Fotoenticine®, and CO₂ laser) in comparison to Chlorhexidine (CHX).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The study included human mandibular molars assessed on International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) score 4 and 5. The cusp part of the clinical crown was cut off until the reduction reaches the central fossa while being continuously supplied with water coolant till the tooth cementoenamel junction (CEJ). The root sections were embedded in polymethyl methacrylate acrylic resin followed by culturing S.mutans biofilm on the CAD surface. Specimens were arbitrarily allocated into four groups(n = 10) based on the type of disinfection. Group 1 (2% CHX), Group 2 (Chitosan), Group 3 (Fotoenticine), and Group 4 (CO₂ laser). S.mutans survival rate was assessed and CAD was restored with a composite restorative material. Thermoocycling of the samples was performed and a universal testing machine (UTM) and Stereomicroscope were used to identify bond integrity and type of fracture. ANOVA and Tukey multiple comparison tests were used to assess SBS. Data on the survival rate of S. mutans were compared between groups using the nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test RESULTS: Outcomes revealed that Group 1 (CHX) displayed the highest survival rate (0.65±0.10). However, lowest survival rate was demonstrated by Group 3 (Fotoenticine) treated specimens (0.25±0.06). It was also discovered that CHX unveiled highest bond strength values (21.48±1.39 MPa). Nevertheless, Group 2 (Chitosan) showed lowest SBS (11.01±1.00 MPa). Intergroup comparison analysis presented that group 1, and group 4 (Co2 laser) (17.76±0.41 MPa) displayed no significant difference in their bond integrity achieved. (p>0.05). However, group 3 (Fotoenticine) (16.28±0.51 MPa) and group 2 demonstrated comparable outcomes of SBS. (p>0.05) CONCLUSION: The use of CHX and CO₂ lasers as disinfectants on the CAD surface resulted in a positive impact on the SBS of resin composite, according to the study's findings. However, it is worth noting that Fotoenticine exhibited better antimicrobial efficacy against S. mutans.

Canal pretreatment using cold atmospheric argon plasma, chitosan and Chlorine p6 activated by photodynamic therapy with EDTA as a final irrigant on the pushout bond strength of fiber post

To evaluate the effect of contemporary root canal irrigants i.e., Cold atmospheric argon plasma (CAAP), Chlorine p6 (Clp6), and chitosan on the push-out bond strength (PBS) of glass fiber post (GFP) and marten hardness (MH) of root canal dentin compared to NaOCl+EDTA.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The anatomic crown of sixty human mandibular premolars was removed by transversal section till cement-enamel junction (CEJ). Root canals were prepared and canals were dried and obturated using gutta-percha points and AH plus sealer. Post space was prepared and specimens were arbitrarily divided into four groups based on the post-space irrigation. (n=15) Group 1: 5.25% NaOCl + 17% EDTA, Group 2: CAAP + 17% EDTA, Group 3: Chitosan + 17% EDTA and Group 4: Clp6 + 17% EDTA. For MH evaluation five samples from each disinfected group were taken and MH was assessed with the help of an ultra microhardness tester. GFP was cemented using self-etch dual cure cement on the remaining 10 samples from each group. Samples were vertically planted in acrylic resin blocks 1mm thick slices were subjected to push-out testing and failure mode analysis using a universal testing machine and Stereomicroscope. ANOVA and Tukey multiple comparison tests were used to compare the means of bond integrity attained (p=0.05).

RESULTS

The maximum values of PBS and MH were displayed in group 1 (5.25% NaOCl + 17% EDTA) specimens. However, group 3 exhibited the minimum values of bond strength and MH scores. Intergroup comparison analysis revealed that group 2, group 3, and group 4 displayed comparable outcomes of PBS and MH (p > 0.05). The cervical and middle third of group 1 specimens displayed a cohesive type of failure. However, the apical section of group 1 and other tested groups exhibited the adhesive type of failure.

CONCLUSION

Canal irrigation with 5.25% NaOCl and 17% EDTA appears to be better in terms of improving the bond integrity of fiber posts with no compromise in MH of the dentin as compared to the contemporary irrigant used.

Efficacy of surgical periodontal treatment with and without photobiomodulation in the treatment of severe periodontitis: An evaluation of periodontal, microbiological, and cytokine levels

AIM

To compare the efficacy of surgical periodontal treatment (SPT) alone and PDT-assisted surgery in participants with severe periodontitis MATERIAL AND METHODS: The present clinical trial was completed by 64 participants (n=32 each). The selection was made according to predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Patients in group A were treated with SPT only and participants in group B were treated with SPT adjunct to PDT. Microbiological assessment of P.Gingivalis; T. Forsythia and T.Denticola were evaluated using cultural analysis and periodontal parameters plaque score (PSc), bleeding on probing (BoP) periodontal depth (PD), and clinical attachment loss (CAL) at baseline and post-treatment at 6 months and 12 months were performed. The gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) was collected for the estimation of IL-1β and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). For intra-group comparison and post hoc correction, Student's t-test along with Bonferroni was used. For the difference between follow-ups, an analysis of variance (ANOVA) multiple rank tests were incorporated.

RESULTS

The mean age of participants in the SPT group was 55.25±4.6yrs. Whereas, participants treated with PDT adjunct to SPT were 54.88±3.6yrs. Periodontal parameters (BoP, PD, PSc, CAL) showed no significant difference at baseline. At 6 months and 12 months follow-up, a significant difference in all parameters (BoP, PD, PSc, and CAL) was found in participants treated with SPT alone and PDT adjunct to SPT (p<0.05). Inflammatory biomarkers at 6-month and 12-month follow-ups, a statistically significant difference in the level of biomarkers (IL-1β and TNF-α) were observed in both groups from baseline (p<0.05). However, at baseline, no significant difference was noted in both groups (p> 0.05). The microbiological assessment showed a significant drop in the bacterial count in participants treated with both regimes i.e., SPT alone and PDT adjunct to SPT.

CONCLUSION

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) adjunct to surgical periodontal treatment (SPT) in severe periodontitis improves microbiological and periodontal parameters and lowers the level of proinflammatory cytokines.

Effectiveness of final cavity disinfectant Terminalia chebula, Malachite, and Indocyanine green, against E. faecalis and on the bond interface of fiber post to radicular dentin

Evaluation of antimicrobial efficacy of contemporary disinfection Malachite green (MG), Terminalia chebula (T. chebula), and Indocyanine green (ICG)) against E. faecalis and their effect on push-out bond strength (PBS) of glass fiber post (GFP) bonded to root dentin in comparison to conventional irrigation used (Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) + Ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (17% EDTA).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Root canal treatment was initiated on sixty human single-rooted premolars and working length was established. The canals were enlarged using ProTaper universal system till F3. The prepared canals were obturated with Gutta-percha (GP) and AH Plus sealer followed by post-space preparation. Twenty canals contained a standard strain of E. faecalis (n=5 in each group) cultured overnight at 37 °C in BHI broth. All the samples were randomly allocated into four groups based on post-space irrigation. (n = 10) Group 1: 5.25% NaOCl+17% EDTA (Control), Group 2: 5.25% NaOCl + ICG, Group 3: 5.25% NaOCl + MG and Group 4: 5.25% NaOCl + T. chebula. Survival rates of E. faecalis were evaluated on the twenty specimens. GFP was placed on the remaining samples using self-etch dual-cure pastes and sectioning was performed in 1 mm thick slices. PBS and failure mode were analyzed using a universal testing machine and stereomicroscope. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey multiple comparison t-tests were used for data analysis. (p = 0.05).

RESULTS

5.25% NaOCl+17% EDTA demonstrated (0.11±0.01 CFU/mL) the lowest survival rate of E. faecalis. However, Group 2 (5.25% NaOCl + ICG) exhibited the highest survival rate (0.52 ± 0.10). Furthermore, the coronal third of group 4 (5.25% NaOCl + T. chebula) (8.71±0.25 MPa) specimens demonstrated the highest PBS of GFP. However, an apical section of group 2 samples (5.25% NaOCl + ICG) (1.21±0.71 MPa) displayed the lowest outcome of bond integrity.

CONCLUSION

Terminalia chebula when used as a final canal disinfectant seems to be promising in improving canal sterility and the bond strength of GFP to the root dentin.

Effectiveness of Morinda Citrofolia, Sapindus Mukorossi, and Curcumin used in curry spice, to the radicular canal irrigant in improving bond integrity of glass fiber post

Evaluation of the push-out bond strength (PBS) of glass fiber reinforced post (GFRP) bonded to root dentin after canal disinfection using food-based root canal irrigants i.e., Curcumin photosensitizer (CP), Riboflavin photosensitizer (RFP), Morinda Ctrifolia juice (MCJ) and Sapindus Mukorossi (SM) along with MTAD as a final irrigant.

MATERIAL METHODS

Fifty human single-rooted premolar teeth were decoronated. Endodontic preparation was performed along with 2.25% sodium hypochlorite NaOCl solution followed by EDTA solution. Canals were dried and obturated followed by post-space preparation by removing GP. Specimens were allocated into five groups based on different food-based disinfection regimes (n= 10). Group 1: 2.25% NaOCl + MTAD (Control), Group 2: 6% MCJ + MTAD, Group 3: SM + MTAD, Group 4: CP + MTAD and Group 5: RFP + MTAD. All GFRP were bonded to radicular dentin. Root sectioning was performed followed by PBS and failure analysis using a universal testing machine (UTM) and stereomicroscope respectively. The data were analyzed using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test and the Post Hoc Tukey HSD test (p=0.05).

RESULTS

Samples disinfected with(MCJ+MTAD) at coronal third demonstrated maximum PBS (9.41±0.51 MPa). However, the apical third of group 5 (RFP + MTAD) exhibited the minimum values (4.06±0.23 MPa). Intergroup comparison analysis unveiled that group 2 (MCJ +MTAD) and group 3 (SM+MTAD) displayed comparable outcomes of PBS at all three-thirds. Similarly, samples in group 1 (2.25% NaOCl+ MTAD), group 4 (CP + MTAD), and group 5 (RFP + MTAD) exhibited comparable PBS.

CONCLUSION

Fruit-based irrigants Morinda Citrifolia and Sapindus Mukorossi have the potential to be used as root canal irrigants with a positive influence on bond strength.

The effect of 400 nm femtosecond laser and Zn(II)chlorin e6 methyl ester (Zn(II)e6Me) photosensitizer on disinfection of radicular dentin bonded to glass fiber post

To assess and compare push-out bond strength (PBS) when canal disinfected with 5.25% NaOCl, 400 nm femtosecond laser, and natural PS activated by PDT (CP and Zn (II) Ce6 methyl ester) on bond efficacy of radicular dentin bonded to glass fiber post.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A sum of 40 non-traumatic, cautiously extracted with closed apex human mandibular premolars were collected and decoronated up to the cement-o-enamel junction. Canals of all specimens were cleaned and shaped using a Protaper universal NiTi system via a crown-down approach, then finally dried out and obturated with gutta-percha. Post alignment space was formed with peso reamers and sanitized. Then samples were randomly allocated into four groups as per the radicular dentin designated disinfection protocols. Group 1 disinfected with curcumin photosensitizer + EDTA, group 2: 5.25% NaOCl and EDTA, group 3: Zn (II) Ce6 methyl ester and EDTA and group 4 sanitized with 400 nm fs-laser + EDTA. GFP was cemented into the radicular canal space and specimens were placed in a thermocycler. Segmentation of the root was done at three levels (coronal, middle, and apical) and positioned in a universal testing machine for PBS analysis. Failure mode analysis was performed using a stereomicroscope and statistical analysis was executed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey multiple comparison tests at a statistically significant level of p < 0.05.

RESULTS

The highest PBS was revealed by group 2 canal disinfected with 5.25% NaOCl +17% EDTA (control) at coronal (9.49 ± 1.42 MPa) and middle (7.545 ± 0.15 MPa) root levels. Whereas, the lowest PBS was displayed by group 3: Zn (II) Ce6 methyl ester +17% EDTA at coronal (6.31 ± 0.54 MPa) middle (4.85 ± 0.11 MPa) root levels respectively. Intergroup comparison presented that radicular dentin disinfected with 400 nm femtosecond laser + 17% EDTA substantiated comparable PBS result to group 2 (control) at all three root levels (p > 0.05). Likewise, root surface disinfection with Curcumin activated by PDT+17% EDTA unveiled no statistically significant result for specimens disinfected with Zn(II) Ce6 methyl ester +17% EDTA(p > 0.05). Furthermore, apical root segments in all groups showed a substantial decrease in PBS value and were comparable (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The bond efficacy of glass fiber post to radicular dentin disinfected with 400 nm femtosecond laser has the potential to be used as an alternative to conventional sodium hypochlorite.

Fracture strength of Er,Yag laser treated PMMA denture-based polymer (DBP) colonized with C. albicans, S. aureus, S.mutans, and E.coli

To assess and equate the efficacy of different disinfection protocols autoclave, chlorhexidine (CHX), PDT utilizing Rose Bengal (RB), chitosan, and Er, Yag laser and their effect on fracture strength of PMMA denture-based polymer (DBP) colonized with C. Albicans, S. aureus, S.mutans, and E.coli.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A total of 50 (n = 10) PMMA DBP were manufactured and adulterated with the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) of diverse microbial colonies inhabited by C. Albicans, S. aureus, S.mutans, and E.coli. The specimens were subjected to different denture disinfection approaches by randomly distributing in into five groups i.e., Er, Yag laser, RB, autoclave, CHX, and Chitosan, respectively for appraising antimicrobial effectiveness. PMMA fracture load was also assessed and statistical analysis was performed for CFU/mL (log10) of exposed C. Albicans, S. aureus, S.mutans, and E.coli by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparison test at a significance level of p < 0.05.

RESULTS

Intergroup comparison disclosed that denture disinfection with Er, Yag laser, autoclave, Chitosan, and CHX (control) validated comparable antimicrobial efficacy to denture against all inspected CFU/mL (log10) (p>0.05). The intragroup comparison revealed that DBP sanitization with Er, Yag laser, autoclave, Chitosan, RB, and CHX substantiated equivalent effective antimicrobial efficacy in plummeting CFU/mL (log10) of S. mutans and E. coli (p>0.05) but in consideration to S.aureus and C.albicans, all groups resulted in declining their count except 5µm RB activated by PDT(p < 0.05). No significant difference was perceived in fracture load of PMMA denture base among Er, Yag laser, RB, chitosan, and CHX (control) (p > 0.05) except autoclave decontamination procedure that indicated the least fracture strength of DBP when disinfected (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Er, Yag laser, and Chitosan activated by PDT have the potential to be used as an alternative to chlorhexidine for disinfecting Polymethyl methacrylate denture base as they demonstrated the highest antimicrobial efficacy against E. coli, C. Albicans, S aureus, and S. mutans with optimal fracture load.

Extrusion bond strength of glass fiber post to radicular dentin after final irrigation using MTAD, EDTA, Pineapple peel extract, and riboflavin

INTRODUCTION

The present study aims to determine the effect of different post-space final irrigants ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), a mixture of Doxycycline citric acid and detergent (MTAD), Riboflavin (RF) and Pineapple peel extract (PPE) on the bond integrity of GFPs bonded to radicular dentin.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Crowns of forty human mandibular premolars teeth were sectioned up to cementoenamel junction CEJ. Root canal treatment was performed. Gates Glidden drills were used to retrieve gutta-percha from the canal. All the specimens were randomly divided into four groups based on the final irrigant used. Group 1 (NaOCl with EDTA), group 2 NaOCl+ MTAD, group 3 NaOCl+RF and group 4 NaOCl+PPE. Cementation of glass fiber posts (GFPs) was performed using self-etch dual-cure resin cement. Sectioning was performed using a slow-speed saw from the coronal, middle, and apical third under constant water irrigation. A universal testing machine was used to assess push-out bond strength (PBS) and failure mode was evaluated using a Stereomicroscope at 40x magnification. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey multiple comparison tests were used for statistical analysis (p=0.05).

RESULTS

Group 4 (2.5% NaOCl+ PPE) displayed the highest PBS at all three root levels (Cervical: 11.22±0.74 MPa, Middle: 8.99±0.97MPa, and Apical: 6.00±0.88 MPa). However, Group 1 (2.5% NaOCl+17% EDTA) demonstrated the lowest EBS (Cervical: 9.25±0.17 MPa, Middle: 7.01±1.84 MPa, and Apical: 4.41±0.17 MPa). Inter-group comparison displayed that PBS to be comparable between group 1 and group 3 (2.5% NaOCl+ Riboflavin) (Cervical: 9.74±0.41 MPa, Middle: 7.44±1.18 MPa, and Apical: 4.21±0.05 MPa) (p > 0.05). Whereas, group 2 (1.3% NaOCl+ MTAD) (Cervical: 9.32±1.36 MPa, Middle: 7.17±1.75 MPa, and Apical: 4.85±0.19 MPa) and group 4 demonstrated comparable values of PBS (p >0.05).

CONCLUSION

Pineapple peel extract and a mixture of Doxycycline citric acid and a detergent when used as a final irrigant demonstrated better bond integrity of GFPs to radicular dentin at all three levels coronal, middle and apical.

The present study aims to evaluate the bond integrity of composite restoration bonded to CAD after disinfection using pineapple peel extract (PPE) Diode laser (DL) and riboflavin (RF) activated by photodynamic therapy (PDT).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Forty human permanent mandibular molars were collected, disinfected, and mounted in poly-vinyl pipes. Carious infected dentin was removed and CAD was disinfected. Samples were divided into 4 groups based on disinfection. Group 1: CAD disinfected with CHX; group 2: CAD disinfected with diode laser; CAD disinfected with PPE and CAD sterilized with riboflavin. Following disinfection, CAD surfaces were applied with the etch-and-rinse adhesive system and bonding agent and restored with a composite restoration. Samples were placed in a thermocycler to simulate oral aging and then mounted on the universal testing machine (UTM) for shear bond strength (SBS) testing. Failure mode was assessed using a steriomicroscoscope at 40X magnification. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) compared the mean SBS and failure type obtained to identify intergroup differences. Similarly, for multiple group comparison, the Tukey HSD test was used keeping the level of significance at 0.05 RESULTS: : CAD disinfected with chlorhexidine (CHX) established the highest bond integrity of the restoration. However, group 2 CAD disinfected with DL displayed the lowest bond values. It was also observed that dentin disinfected using CHX demonstrated comparable SBS values to CAD disinfected with PPE and CAD disinfected with RF.

CONCLUSION

RF and PPE displayed comparable outcomes of SBS of composite restoration bonded to CAD to that of CHX. DL displayed lower bond integrity than the other investigated groups. Further studies are recommended to deduce the findings of the existing study.

Disinfection of caries affected dentin using Rose Bengal, Titanium Sapphire Laser; Ammonium Hexa-fluorosilicate, and ozonated water on resin dentin bond strength

The present study intended to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of resin cement bonded to caries affected dentin (CAD) after disinfection with rose Bengal (RB), Ti-Sapphire Laser, Ammonium Hexafluorosilicate (NH₄)₂[SiF₆], and ozonated water (O₃) MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 100 extracted human mandibular molars were acquired using caries severity code, 6 of the ICDAS criteria. To achieve homogeneity and prevent size-biased distributions, the average cavity preparation of all specimens had a depth of 2 mm and a breadth of 3 mm. Specimens were divided into five groups (n = 20) at random according to type of disinfection. Group 1: control group, Group 2: RB, Group 3: O₃, Group 4: Ti-sapphire laser, and Group 5: (NH4)2[SiF₆]. All specimens were etch and rinsed, bonding agent was applied and restored with resin cement. Estimation of SBS was performed by placing samples (10/group) in universal testing machine. Stereomicroscope under 40 × magnification was employed for failure mode analysis (FMA). Statistical analysis was executed using the ANOVA and the Tukey multiple test (p<0.05).

RESULTS

The highest SBS was demonstrated in the control group when CAD bonded to resin cement without disinfection (18.22±1.14 MPa). Likewise, the lowest SBS values were unveiled by CAD disinfection with O₃ (12.44±1.36 MPa). Similarly, CAD when disinfected with RB (16.25±1.01 MPa) and Ti-sapphire laser (16.25±1.22 MPa) bonded to resin cement exhibited comparable bond results (p>0.05).

CONCLUSION

Caries affected dentin when treated with etch and rinse technique without the use of disinfectant displayed the highest SBS. However, it was seen that utilization of various disinfectants has altered the adhesion capacity or bonding efficacy of caries-affected dentin.

Resin Modified Glass Ionomer bonded to Caries affected dentin disinfected with Carbon dioxide laser, Diode lasers, Bee glue and Photosensitizing agents: An estimation of bond strength

The present in vitro study was carried out to evaluate the effect of different cavity disinfectants chlorhexidine (CHX), riboflavin (RF), diode laser (DL), carbon dioxide laser (CO₂), and Propolis on the bond values of resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) restoration bonded to caries affected dentin (CAD) MATERIALS AND METHODS: : Forty multi-rooted mandibular molars were adapted in self-cure acrylic resin blocks up to the level of the cementoenamel junction so that only the crown portion of the tooth remained visible. Silicon carbide discs of 1200 and 600 grits were then used to remove infected dentin. However, CAD was left behind to use as a substrate for restoration. All samples were randomly divided into five groups based on the method of disinfection. group 1: Propolis, group 2: CHX, group 3:RF activated by PDT, group 4: CO₂ laser, and group 5: DL. RMGIC restoration was then placed on these disinfected samples. Samples were kept in an incubator keeping humidity at 100 % and temperature at 37 °C for about 24 hrs. All samples were then placed in a Universal testing machine to measure SBS. Failure modes were identified using a stereomicroscope. ANOVA test was used to analyze intergroup comparison. Tukey HSD test was used to evaluate multiple group comparisons. The level of significance was set at a p < 0.05 value.

RESULTS

Group 2 specimens disinfected with CHX established the highest SBS value (17.85±1.09 MPa). Whereas, Group 5 specimens in which CAD was disinfected with DL demonstrated the lowest SBS (10.36±0.33MPa).

CONCLUSION

CO₂ has the potential to be used alternate to CHX for caries-affected dentin disinfection. However, Riboflavin activated by photodynamic therapy; Diode laser, and Propolis as cavity disinfectant prior bond to resin-modified glass ionomer is not recommended and needs further probing.

Efficacy of contemporary agents on disinfection and surface roughness of polyetheretherketone implant abutments

The present study was designed to estimate the disinfection and surface roughness (Ra) of colonized (E. coli, C. albicans, S.aureus, and S. mutans) PEEK implant abutment disinfected with PDT, chemical, and herbal agents.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) inoculated E.coli, C.albicans, S.mutans, and S.aureus in an in-vitro scenario using 60 PEEK implant abutment samples provided by the manufacturer. Following that, the samples were distributed in four disinfection methods categories - group 1: 5mM Rose Bengal PS (RB), group 2: ultrasonic disinfection (UD), group 3: 2% glutaraldehyde (GaH), and group 4: tea tree oil (TTO). To scrutinize the data and compare the means and standard deviations of CFU/mL (log10) for exposed E. coli, Candida albicans, S.aureus, and S.mutans, a two-way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparison test were performed.

RESULTS

Specimens treated with 2% GaH, UD, and TTO validated a significant reduction in E. coli, C. albicans, S aureus, and S. mutans CFU/mL (log10) colonies. Intragroup assessment designated that there is no reduction in CFU/mL (log10) of E.coli and C.albicans when PEEK implant abutment specimens are irradiated with 5Mm RB. A decline is seen in values of S. aureus, and S. mutans microbial strains on treatment with all four cleansers while the computation of C.albicans and E.coli colonies unveiled significant reduction with GaH, UD, and TTO except RB (p<0.05). The results of Ra showed that PEEK fabricated implant abutment specimens, when treated with UD (3.472±0.561μm), displayed a significantly higher Ra value as compared to other analyzed cleansing methods.

CONCLUSION

. Disinfection with 2% glutaraldehyde and Tea tree oil showed maximum antimicrobial efficacy and lower Ra values for PEEK implant abutments colonized with bacterial strains of E.coli, C.albicans, S.aureus, and S.mutans.

Peri-implant parameters and cytokine profile among Peri-implant disease patients treated with Er Cr YSGG laser and PDT

To assess the effect of Er,Cr:YSGG (ECL) laser-assisted non-surgical treatment and Photodynamic therapy (PDT) as an adjunct to mechanical debridement (MD) on clinical and radiographic peri‑implant inflammatory parameters in patients with peri‑implant disease MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 95 patients with the peri‑implant disease were divided into 3 groups. Patients in group 1 were treated with MD only, patients in group 2 recieved MD+ECL and patients in group 3 were treated with MD+PDT. Perimplant parameters CBL: Crestal bone loss; PD: Probing depth; BI: Bleeding index; PI: Plaque index were measured from baseline to 3 month and 6 months follow up. The means and standard deviation (SD) of the aforementioned parameters were calculated using multiple comparison tests Post hoc Tukey test. Power analysis and sample size (PASS) was used for calculating sample size. The power was estimated at 85% along with a minimum of 30 participants in each group with a two-sided significance level of 0.05 was to be achieved RESULTS: At baseline mean scores of peri‑implant PI, BI and PD were comparable among patients in group 1 (control), 2 (ECL), and 3 (PDT). At 3 months follow up, mean scores of peri‑implant PI (P <0.05), BI (P <0.05) and PD (P <0.05) in group 1 (control) were significantly higher compared to group 2 (ECL) and 3 (PDT). At 6 months follow-up, PI and BI mean scores among groups 1, 2, and 3 were comparable (P>0.05). However, PD was significantly higher in control than groups 2 and 3 (P<0.05) CONCLUSION: MD with adjunct ECL and adjunct PDT are more efficient in reducing peri‑implant soft tissue inflammatory parameters for short-term use than MD alone.

Disinfection of radicular dentin using Riboflavin, Rose Bengal, Curcumin, and Porfimer sodium on extrusion bond strength of fiber post to radicular dentin

AIM

To assess the influence of different photosensitizers activated by PDT as a disinfectant in comparison to conventional sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) on the EBS (extrusion bond strength) of FRCP with radicular dentin.

METHODS

A total of fifty single-rooted human maxillary central incisors with fully developed apices were selected. Endodontic treatment of samples was performed using 10K file to obtain patency than sequentially with a 25K file followed by rotary pro tapers till F2 with constant irrigation. The canal was dried and obturated with corresponding gutta-percha and sealer. A Peso reamer was employed to prepare post space. Based on canal disinfection regimes, samples were divided into five groups. Group 1 Riboflavin (RF)+17%EDTA, group 2 Rose bengal (RB) +17%EDTA, group 3 Curcumin CP +17%EDTA, group 4 Porfimer sodium, Photofrin (PS) +17%EDTA and group 5 2.25% NaOCl +17% EDTA (control). Following disinfection, the canal space of all specimens was dried followed by FRCP cementation. Specimens were placed on a Universal testing machine (UTM) for EBS. The type of bond failure was evaluated using a stereomicroscope. ANOVA and Tukey multiple comparison tests were used to compare means.

RESULTS

The highest EBS was shown by group 1 canal disinfected with riboflavin (RF) and 17% EDTA at all three levels. The lowest EBS was displayed in group 5 canal cleaned with 2.25% NaOCl and 17% EDTA. Intragroup assessment disclosed a decrease in EBS from cervical one-third to apical one-third in all experimental groups. Intergroup comparison revealed group 4 using PS and 17% EDTA and group 5 canal disinfected with 2.25% NaOCl and 17% EDTA at all three levels of root structure coronal, middle, and apical exhibited comparable EBS (p>0.05).

CONCLUSION

Root canal dentin treated with different PS (RF, RB, CP) has the potential to be used as canal disinfection as it demonstrates better EBS than the conventional disinfecting regime (2.25% NaOCl +17% EDTA). PS and 17% EDTA as a canal disinfectant need further investigation.

Photodynamic therapy and gaseous ozone versus conventional post space treatment methods on the push-out bond strength of fiber posts luting with different resin cements

BACKGROUND

The aim of this study was to compare the push-out bond strength of fiber posts by using two different resin cement after the treatments of post space with photodynamic therapy, gaseous ozone and conventional disinfection solution.

METHODS

The root canal treatments of one hundred maxillary incisors were performed. The roots were randomly distributed into 5 groups (n = 20). NaOCl of 2.5% + EDTA of 17% in group 1, CHX of 2% in group 2, toluidine blue + diode laser as the photodynamic therapy (PDT) in group 3 and ozone in group 4 were applied to the post spaces. Group 5 was washed with distilled water as control group. Each group was divided into two subgroups according to the adhesive types and the posts were bonded by using RelyX and LinkForce. The bond strength was calculated using the push-out test method. Resin tag formations were photographed with SEM. The push-out bond strength was analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey tests (p = .05).

RESULTS

The PDT group, which showed the highest PBS among the groups bonded with LinkForce at all levels, was significantly higher than Ozone and DW groups (p<.05). NaOCl and ozone treatments provided the highest PBS among the groups bonded with RelyX for all levels and this difference was significant according to the DW group (p < .05).

CONCLUSION

Post space treatments improved the bond strength of the fiber post ​​in both types of resin cement.

Role of Riboflavin; Curcumin photosensitizers and Ozone when used as canal disinfectant on Push-out bond strength of glass fibre post to radicular dentin

To assess the efficacy of photosensitizers (CP, riboflavin) and gaseous ozone in comparison to the conventional radicular dentin disinfectant (NaOCl) on push-out bond strength (PBS) of PFRC post cemented to radicular dentin MATERIAL AND METHOD: Human single-rooted teeth were collected, steriled implanted in polyvinyl pipes up to a cement-o-enamel junction and de coronated. Cleaning and shaping of the canal were performed using the crown down technique followed by obturation of the canal space. Canal space was prepared using peso reamers and samples were divided into four groups based on types of canal disinfectant protocols. Group 1: Riboflavin+ 17%EDTA; group 2: Curcumin Photosensitizer + 17% EDTA; group 3: Gaseous Ozone disinfection (O3) +17% EDTA and group 4 control 2.5% NaOCl +17% EDTA. Within the canal space, fiber post was cemented and cured, and thermocycled. PBS was evaluated using a Universal testing machine (UTM) and failure modes using a stereomicroscope at 40x magnification. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine the mean and standard deviation of push-out bond strength (PBS). The Tukey multiple comparison tests (p = 0.05) was used to compare the means of PBS RESULTS: The highest PBS was displayed in group 2 CP+ 17% EDTA at all three root levels, coronal (8.81±0.61), middle (7.77±0.55), and apical (5.25±0.61). The lowest PBS was revealed in group 4, disinfected with 2.5% NaOCl +17% EDTA (control) at coronal (6.12±0.54), middle (5.46±0.84), and apical (3.00±1.88) levels. The most prevailed fracture mode was an adhesive failure (cement-dentin interface).

CONCLUSION

Radicular dentin disinfected with PDT using CP, riboflavin, and O3 displayed similar PBS at all root segments. NaOCl is a convenient, traditional, and commonly used disinfectant, and it's effects on PBS is still controversial.

Evaluation of the Effects of Bromelain and Papain Enzymes on Shear Bond Strength of Composite Resin to Enamel

Aim

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of 6% bromelain and 10% papain enzymes on shear bond strength (SBS) of composite resin to enamel compared to conventional 37% phosphoric acid etching.

Materials and Methods

50 human maxillary premolar teeth were randomly divided into 5 groups (G1–G5/n = 10). In G1 and G2, after etching enamel with 37% phosphoric acid for 15 seconds and washing the surface, 10% papain and 6% bromelain enzymes were used, respectively. In G3 and G4, 6% bromelain or 10% papain enzymes were applied on enamel. In G5, the enamel surface was etched with 37% phosphoric acid for 15 seconds. A two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive system (Adper Single Bond 2) was applied. A nanohybrid composite (Z350) was placed using Teflon molds. All the samples were then subjected to the SBS test using a universal testing machine. Data analysis was performed using a one-way ANOVA test followed by the Tukey test. p values less than 0.05 were considered significant.

Results

Comparison of the mean SBS between G1, G2, and G5 shows no significant differences (p > 0.05); however, they had higher mean SBS compared with G3 and G4 (p < 0.0001).

Conclusions

The shear bond strength of composite to enamel was not affected significantly using either 6% bromelain or 10% papain enzymes after 37% phosphoric acid application. Moreover, 6% bromelain and 10% papain enzymes were not as effective as 37% phosphoric acid alone.

Effect of Photodynamic therapy and Er,Cr: YSGG laser on bond strength of bleached enamel to composite resin

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of the present study was bleached enamel reversal using conventional ascorbic acid (AA) and contemporary methods including Photodynamic therapy (PDT), Er, Cr: YSGG (ECL) on bond integrity to composite resin.

MATERIAL AND METHOD

Forty sound permanent mandibular premolars were collected from a dental clinical setting and disinfected. All forty samples were mounted vertically in a rubber mold exposing only the clinical crown. All samples were bleached using Opalescence Boost Professional Teeth Whitening. After the bleaching procedure, each sample was randomly allocated into four groups according to surface treatment. Samples in group 1 were treated with methylene blue photosensitizer (MBP). Samples in group 2 were exposed to 10% sodium ascorbate. Samples in group 3 were treated with Er, Cr: YSGG laser (ECL). Samples in group 4 were not treated (control). All Samples were treated with 37% phosphoric acid and a bonding agent was applied. A bulk-fill composite was cured to all specimens and all samples were treated in a thermocycler. Specimens were placed in a universal testing machine for shear bond strength (SBS) testing. Descriptive statistics were associated by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post hoc test maintaining level of significance (p<0.05) RESULTS: The lowest SBS scores were achieved in the bleached enamel (BE) group (15.25±1.745 MPa). Whereas, the highest bond integrity was attained by AA group (32.23±1.854 MPa). Samples treated with ECL (31.87±1.659 MPa) and AA (32.23±1.854) were comparable (p>0.05). Samples treated with PDT exhibited significantly different SBS (22.41±1.258) compared to other experimental groups CONCLUSION: ECL showed a reversal effect of BE compared to AA and has the potential to be used in clinical settings. BE reversal using MBP needs further investigation.

Influence of adjunctive photodynamic therapy (curcumin) on the extrusion bond strength of radicular dentin to contemporary root canal sealers

OBJECTIVE

The aim was to compare Photodynamic therapy (PDT) as an adjunct to NaOCl and EDTA on the extrusion bond strength (EBS) of AH Plus (AH), Sealapex (SA) and MTA Fillapex (MF) root canal sealers.

MATERIALS AND METHOD

Root canal treatment for human teeth (n = 60) using protaper universal system was performed followed by irrigation with NaOCl/ EDTA. Samples were divided (n = 30) based on disinfection technique, NaOCl/EDTA and NaOCl/EDTA with PDT (Curcumin-PS-CP) as an adjunct. Specimens were divided in three subgroups (n = 10) based on sealers used (Gp 1-Na-E-AH, Gp 2-Na-E-PDT-AH, Gp 3-Na-E-SA, Gp 4-Na-E-PDT-SA, Gp 5-Na-E-MF & Gp 6-Na-E-PDT-MF). Canals were dried and obturated followed by sectioning at coronal and middle third. EBS testing was performed using a universal testing machine (UTM) and modes of failure were assessed. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey multiple comparison tests were used to compare the means of EBS. (p < 0.05).

RESULTS

Sealers showed a significant influence on EBS, as Gp 1 (Co: 9.21 ± 0.62, Mid: 8.54 ± 0.55) and Gp 2 (Co: 7.11 ± 0.68, Mid: 7.30 ± 0.37) showed higher EBS than Gp 3 (Co: 5.21 ± 0.63, Mid: 4.36 ± 0.83) and Gp 4 (Co: 5.39 ± 0.72, Mid: 4.46 ± 0.74). Gp 5 (Co: 9.04 ± 0.13, Mid: 8.14 ± 0.91) and Gp 6 (Co: 8.67 ± 0.42, Mid: 8.07 ± 0.07) exhibited higher EBS than Gp 3 and Gp 4 specimens. Adjunctive use of PDT for AH sealer (Gp 2) showed decreased EBS compared to Gp 1 specimens. EBS remained comparable for both MTA-Fillapex and Sealapex with and without PDT.

CONCLUSION

AH Plus (Gp 1 and 2) and MTA-Fillapex (Gp 5 and 6) sealers displayed better EBS compared to Sealapex (Group 3 and 4). Adjunctive Application of PDT (CP) did not show a significant improvement in bond strength of sealers to root dentin.

Influence of Different Conditioning Treatments on the Bond Integrity of Root Dentin to rGO Infiltrated Dentin Adhesive. SEM, EDX, FTIR and MicroRaman Study

The present study aimed to synthesize and equate the mechanical properties and dentin interaction of two adhesives; experimental adhesive (EA) and 5 wt.% reduced graphene oxide rGO) containing adhesive. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Micro-Raman spectroscopy, push-out bond strength test, and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were employed to study nano-bond strength, degree of conversion (DC), and adhesive-dentin interaction. The EA was prepared, and rGO particles were added to produce two adhesive groups, EA-rGO-0% (control) and rGO-5%. The canals of sixty roots were shaped and prepared, and fiber posts were cemented. The specimens were further alienated into groups based on the root canal disinfection technique, including 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), Photodynamic therapy (PDT), and ER-CR-YSGG laser (ECYL). The rGO nanoparticles were flake-shaped, and EDX confirmed the presence of carbon (C). Micro-Raman spectroscopy revealed distinct peaks for graphene. Push-out bond strength test demonstrated highest values for the EA-rGO-0% group after NaOCl and PDT conditioning whereas, rGO-5% showed higher values after ECYL conditioning. EA-rGO-0% presented greater DC than rGO-5% adhesive. The rGO-5% adhesive demonstrated comparable push-out bond strength and rheological properties to the controls. The rGO-5% demonstrated acceptable DC (although lower than control group), appropriate dentin interaction, and resin tag establishment.

Push out bond strength of glass fiber post to radicular dentin irrigated with Nisin and MTAD compared to methylene blue photodynamic therapy

Present lab-based study intended to appraise the effect of nisin, Mixture of Tetracycline, Acid and Detergent (MTAD), and photodynamic therapy (PDT) when used as a canal disinfectant on push-out bond strength (PBS) of fiber post to radicular dentin MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty uni-radicular premolar teeth were extracted and disinfected in 0.5 % thymol solution. All specimens were decoronated to achieve standardize root length of 14 mm. Cleaning and shaping of the canal were done using protaper NiTi system. The canal space was dried and obturated. Post space was prepared using peso reamers up to 10 mm length and samples were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 10). Group 1 irrigated with 10 % Nisin with MTAD, group 2: 1.3 % NaOCl and MTAD, Group 3 irrigated with 2.5 % NaOCl and 17 % EDTA and post space of samples in group 4 with PDT with MTAD. Fiber-reinforced composite post (FRCP) was fitted in canal space using self-etch resin cement. Each sample was cut into 1 mm from coronal, middle, and apical and subjected to PBS via a universal testing machine. For comparison of means, Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey multiple comparison test was used maintaining the level of significance at p < 0.05.

RESULT

Samples in group 3 post space irrigated with 2.5 % NaOCl and 17 % EDTA demonstrated the highest PBS at all root levels (cervical: 8.83 ± 0.14 MPa, middle: 7.63 ± 0.82 MPa and apical: 5.82 ± 0.32 MPa) in comparison to other tested groups. Whereas, group 1 in which Nisin 10 % with MTAD was used as a canal disinfectant displayed the lowest PBS at all levels (cervical: 6.91 ± 0.54 MPa, middle: 6.15 ± 0.31 MPa, and apical: 3.62 ± 0.68 MPa).

CONCLUSION

Post space irrigated with 1.3 % NaOCl and MTAD shows PBS similar to control group 2.5 % NaOCl and 17 % EDTA. Both types of irrigation methods have potential and can be recommended in clinical scenarios. Whereas, 10 % Nisin and PDT with MTAD as chelator needs further inquiry.

Influence of Photodynamic therapy and different gingival retraction agents on bond integrity of composite to dentin

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the influence of gingival retraction agents (Expasyl and Viscostat) and different conditioning methods (Total-etch, Self-etch, and PDT) on bond integrity of composite to dentin.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

One hundred and eighty, third molars were collected cleaned and disinfected in thymol solution. The specimens were rooted vertically up to cementoenamel junction within polyvinyl cylinders (PVC). Based on gingival retraction materials samples were divided into three groups (n = 60). Group A: dentin applied with Expasyl; Group B: Viscostat was applied on dentin and Group C: Control. Dentin surface was treated with different surface conditioners. Etch and rinse, PDT MBP, and Two-step self-etch. A bonding agent was applied and composite buildup was done. Samples were placed in the universal testing machine for SBS. Bond failure was assessed using a stereomicroscope. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post hoc test compared the means and standard deviations (SD) after SBS testing (p = 0.05).

RESULTS

The highest score of bond strength was exhibited by group C1 (21.14 ± 1.05 MPa-Etch & rinse + Tetric-N- Bond) whereas group C2 (12.15 ± 0.28 -PDT MBPS + Tetric-N-Bond, No treatment group) demonstrated the lowest SBS. Based on the application of haemostatic agent, bond values among subgroups A1 (18.75 ± 1.05 MPa - Expasyl + Etch & rinse + Tetric-N-bond) and B1 (17.84 ± 0.11 MPa -Viscostat + Etch & rinse + Tetric-N-Bond) was comparable (p>0.05). Based on the conditioning methods, bond scores among groups C1 (21.14 ± 1.05 MPa -Etch & rinse + Tetric-N- Bond) and C3 (19.05 ± 1.28 MPa -Clearfill SE) were comparable (p >0.05).

CONCLUSION

Viscostat and Expasyl result in compromised bond integrity of composite restoration to dentin in etch and rinse and self-etch group compared to no treatment group. However, the pre-application of Viscostat and Expasyl on dentin conditioned with PDT improved bond integrity of composite resin.

Comparison of adhesive bond strength among fiber reinforced post and core with different cementation techniques: In vitro study

To investigate push-out bond strength (PBS) of fiber post to radicular dentin after using different cementation techniques.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Sixty single-rooted premolars were disinfected and cleaned by mechanical instrumentation. S1, S2, and SX were used for canal shaping and finishing of the canal was carried out using F1 and F2. This was followed by constant irrigation and smear layer removal using 17%EDTA. The canal was dried filled with gutta-percha and canal space was prepared using a peso reamer. Based on cementation techniques, samples were randomly allocated into six groups. Group 1: One-step Monoblock MC; Group 2: One-step, Monoblock MC-NA (no adhesive) GFP; Group 3: One-step, RX-MC-Monoblock; Group 4: Two-step, RX-MC; Group 5: Two-step, RX-FZ; and Group 6: Two-step RX-FZ-custom post. All specimens were mounted in polyvinyl pipes using acrylic resin up to cement enamel junction. All specimens were mounted in a universal testing machine subjected to push-out forces at a speed of 0.5 mm/min. Five samples from each group were sputter-coated with 6 nm gold thickness for 300 s at 250 mA. The coated specimens were assessed under the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey Kramer multiple comparisons tests were performed to compare means among groups maintaining the level of significance at (p < 0.001).

RESULTS

The highest PBS was displayed in RX-MC-Monoblock (199.020 ± 21.432 MPa). Whereas, lowest PBS was found in Monoblock MC-NA (no adhesive)-GFP (76.440 ± 9.468 MPa). Among one-step groups, RX-MC Monoblock exhibited the highest PBS (199.020 ± 21.432 MPa) comparable to one-step Monoblock MC (134.28 ± 19.37 MPa) (p > 0.05). Similarly, among two-steps groups, two-step RX-MC demonstrated significantly higher PBS values than two-step RX-FZ (143.340 ± 23.68 MPa) and RX-FZ-custom post (86.90 ± 7.41 MPa) (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

One-step RX-MC-Monoblock technique using self-adhesive cement and core foundation composite resin material multicore flow when cured simultaneously exhibited the highest bond integrity of post retention compared to other cementation technique.

Impact of graphene oxide and silver diamine fluoride in comparison to photodynamic therapy on bond integrity and microleakage scores of resin modified glass ionomer cement to demineralized dentin

AIM

To evaluate the impact of graphene oxide (GO) and silver diammine fluoride (SDF) in comparison to photodynamic therapy (PDT) on adhesive bond integrity and microleakage scores of resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) to demineralized dentin.

METHODS

80 non-carious and atraumatic third molars were mounted inside the segments of polyvinyl pipes. Exposure, homogenization, and polishing of dentinal tubules was performed. 20 specimens were left unconditioned and classified a group 4. Exposure of acetic acid was done to 60 specimens and randomly allocated into 3 groups. Group 1 specimens were treated with 0.25 % GO; group 2 specimens were treated with 3.8 % SDF; and group 3 specimens were exposed to PDT. The bonding of all samples to RMGIC was performed by light curing and universal testing machine was utilized for testing shear bond strength (SBS). For failure modes, an optical microscope at 40x magnification was used to observe the debonded interfaces. For microleakage, all the specimens were submerged in 2% methylene blue for 1 day and observed under a digital microscope. The post hoc Tukey and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to examine SBS. A p-value of ≤0.05 was considered statistically significant.

RESULTS

Group 2 showed the highest bond strength (3.8 % SDF + RMGIC + DD - 15.27 ± 2.19 MPa). Groups 1 (0.25 % GO + RMGIC + DD - 14.11 ± 3.82) and 2 showed comparable results of SBS, which was significantly higher when compared with other research groups (p < 0.05). According to the post hoc Tukey test, the SBS scores of treatment groups exhibited statistically significant values as compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Group 2 samples showed the least microleakage mean score (0.8 ± 0.42), followed by group 1 specimens (1.02 ± 0.88). The comparable microleakage mean scores were demonstrated by the samples in group 1 and 2 (p < 0.01). According to one-way ANOVA, a significant difference was observed in microleakage scores among experimental groups (p < 0.01).

CONCLUSION

Improved bond strength and marginal microleakage scores were demonstrated by the demineralized dentin treated with 0.25 % graphene oxide and 3.8 % silver diamine fluoride when bonded to resin-modified glass ionomer cement. The application of methylene blue photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy undermined the adhesive bond strength applied on demineralized dentin.

Influence of Propolis, Ozone and Photodynamic therapy in root canal disinfection on resin bond strength to radicular dentin

AIM

The aim of the present study was to assess post space disinfection using different irrigants and their effect on radicular dentin bond to SERC.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Forty single rooted mandibular 2nd premolars were collected and disinfected. All samples were decoronated maintaining root length of 12 mm and embedded vertically in acrylic resin. Shaping of the canal was performed using reciprocating system. Canals were dried using paper points and obturated with gutta percha via lateral condensation. Peso-reamers were used to create post space up to 10 mm. The post space was irrigated with 1% NaOCl before being randomly allocated into four groups (n = 10) according to different methods of canal disinfection. Samples in group 1 were subjected to photoactivated disinfection (PAD), group 2 irrigated with ethanol based propolis group 3 disinfected using ozone and group 4 irrigated with 2.25 % NaOCl with 17 % EDTA and ECL. GFP was fitted using SERC. Each sample was cut into 1 mm from coronal, middle and apical and subjected to pushout bond strength (PBS) via universal testing machine. Fracture analysis were confirmed by stereomicroscope at 40x magnification. For comparison of means, Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey multiple comparison test was used maintaining the level of significance at p <  0.05.

RESULTS

The highest PBS at all three levels were found in group 4, canal disinfected with 2.5 % NaOCl with 17 % EDTA and ECYL. Whereas, the lowest PBS was observed in group 1. Inter group comparison, prosthetic space disinfected with propolis extract showed no significant difference to group 4 canal disinfected with 2.5 % NaOCl with 17 % EDTA and ECYL at all three levels (p > 0.05). Intra group comparison in all experimental groups showed no significant difference was noted in coronal and middle thirds of group 1, group 2 and group 3 respectively (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

2.5 % NaOCl with EDTA and ECL treatment (group 4) remains the gold standard when used as a final canal irrigant. Propolis can be used as potential irrigant for canal disinfectant provided if the composition becomes standardized.

Surface treatment of RMGIC to composite resin using different photosensitizers and lasers: A bond assessment of closed Sandwich restoration

The aim of present study was to assess and compare different conditioning methods (laser, PDT and conventional) on shear bond strength (SBS) of resin modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) bonded to composite (sandwich technique).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Fifty specimens were prepared from RMGIC and were packed in a teflon mould placed on glass slab. Through each of the glass slab the cement was light cured for 20 s. Now samples were randomly allocated into five groups (n = 10) according to pre-treatment protocols. In group 1 RMGIC were conditioned with MBP using PDT, Samples in group 2 treated with Er,Cr:YSGG (ECYL), group 3 pre-treated with Nd:YAG laser (NYL), samples in group 4 surface conditioned with air abrasion (AA) and group 5 conditioned with 37 % phosphoric acid (PA). Specimens after conditioning were rinsed with distilled water. Adhesive Adper Single Bond 2 was applied on treated surface of RMGIC and cured. Teflon mold was utilized to hold the composite Filtek Z250 in an incremental technique. For SBS testing all specimens were placed under shear knife edge at 1 K N at a speed of 0.5mm2 until bond failure. Optical microscope was used to evaluate failure pattern at 10x magnification. The data of SBS in Megapascal were subjected to statistical test. Analysis of variance was followed by Post hoc test with level of significance at 5 %.

RESULT

The maximum SBS was found in group 5 RMGIC conditioned with 37 % PA (16.45 ± 0.32 MPa). Whereas, group 1 (MBP, PDT) demonstrated significantly lower bond integrity (9.82 ± 1.08 MPa) compared to all experimental groups. Bond integrity of RMGIC surface treated with MBP, PDT (9.82 ± 1.08 MPa), group 3 lased with NYL (11.47 ± 0.53 MPa) and samples in group 4 conditioned with AA (11.23 ± 0.47 MPa) were comparable (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

ECYL has a potential to be used for conditioning of RMGIC prior to composite restoration (sandwich technique). MBP at 100 mg/L deteriorates SBS of composite to RMGIC.
