Abstract
In Colombia, research on Salmonella concerning animal health, veterinary diagnostics, and epidemiology within the primary production chain is limited. This study aimed to analyze the published data about Salmonella in the Colombian primary pig production chain from 2009 to mid-2024. This involved an exploratory literature review using systematic search strategies, including articles, graduate studies, conference presentations, and technical reports from the selected period. Of the 35 studies reviewed, 30 met the inclusion criteria, with eleven being from the grey literature. The pooled prevalence of Salmonella spp. on Colombian farms was 8.9%, while the seroprevalence ranged from 27 to 40%. Risk factors associated with the presence of this bacterium on farms included aspects such as water sources, pest control, the farm type, and management practices. Few scientific publications address the presence of this pathogen in primary pig production in Colombia, underscoring the need to raise awareness within the academic and production communities about the importance of conducting and reporting new studies and cases.

Abstract
Salmonella infects poultry, and it is also a human foodborne pathogen. This bacterial genus is classified into several serovars/lineages, some of them showing high antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The ease of Salmonella transmission in farms, slaughterhouses, and eggs industries has made controlling it a real challenge in the poultry-production chains. This review describes the emergence, dissemination, and AMR of the main Salmonella serovars and lineages detected in Brazilian poultry. It is reported that few serovars emerged and have been more widely disseminated in breeders, broilers, and layers in the last 70 years. Salmonella Gallinarum was the first to spread on the farms, remaining as a concerning poultry pathogen. Salmonella Typhimurium and Enteritidis were also largely detected in poultry and foods (eggs, chicken, turkey), being associated with several human foodborne outbreaks. Salmonella Heidelberg and Minnesota have been more widely spread in recent years, resulting in frequent chicken/turkey meat contamination. A few more serovars (Infantis, Newport, Hadar, Senftenberg, Schwarzengrund, and Mbandaka, among others) were also detected, but less frequently and usually in specific poultry-production regions. AMR has been identified in most isolates, highlighting multi-drug resistance in specific poultry lineages from the serovars Typhimurium, Heidelberg, and Minnesota. Epidemiological studies are necessary to trace and control this pathogen in Brazilian commercial poultry production chains.

Abstract
ABSTRACT: Salmonella Infantis is frequently associated with human infections worldwide and is transmitted by consumption of contaminated foods, particularly those of animal origin, especially the chicken meat. We aimed to evaluate virulence characteristics, antimicrobial resistance and the genetic similarity of 51 strains of S. Infantis isolated from samples of poultry origin. The strains were isolated from 2009 to 2010 in a company with full cycle of broiler’s production in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The antimicrobial susceptibility test was performed and, by PCR, we evaluated the presence of the genes lpfA (hem-adhesion), agfA (hem-biofilm) and sefA (hem-adhesion) and resistance genes to beta-lactams (blaTEM, blaSHV, bla CTX-M and blaAmpC ). The phylogenetic relationship was determined by RAPD-PCR method. Among the drugs tested, the highest percentages of resistance were to amoxicillin (35.3%) and to sulfonamide (15.7%). Eleven antimicrobial resistance patterns were identified (A1 to A11), none of them presented a multiresistance profile (> 3 antimicrobials classes). There was 100% of positivity for the agfA gene, 92.2% for the lpfA gene, and no strain presented the sefA gene. Most of the isolates showed similarities in virulence potential, since they were simultaneously positive for two studied genes, agfA and lpfA (92.2%, 47/51). Of the 18 (35.3%) strains resistant to antimicrobials of the β-lactam class, 10 (55.5%) were positive to blaAmpC gene, five (27.8%) for blaCTX-M , two (11.1%) to blaSHV and no strain presented the blaTEM gene. The phylogenetic evaluation has shown the presence of five clusters (A, B, C, D and E) with similarity greater than 80%, and three distinct strains which were not grouped in any cluster. Cluster B grouped 33 strains, all positive for lpfA and agfA genes, from both, the broiler farming facility and the slaughterhouse, persistent throughout all the study period. This cluster also grouped 18 strains clones with genetic similarity greater than 99%, all isolated in the slaughterhouse. The presence of virulence genes associated with persistent strains clones for a long period, warns to the possibility of S. Infantis to form biofilm, and should be constantly monitored in broilers’ production chain, in order to know the profile of the strains that may contaminate the final product and evaluate the hazards that represents to public health.

Abstract
Background & objectives: Outbreaks of infection due to Salmonella enterica servovar Typhi (S. Typhi) are a great threat to public health. A rapid molecular typing method to characterize strains implicated in an outbreak is critical in implementing appropriate control measures. This study was done to demonstrate the power of a PCR-based method to provide rapid insights into the genetic relatedness amongst the Salmonella isolates implicated in a suspected typhoid fever outbreak. Methods: Forty two S. Typhi isolates originating from three geographically distinct areas, with one area suspected to have a single-source outbreak were included in the study. The genetic fingerprint of all isolates was generated using enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequence based-PCR (ERIC-PCR). The antimicrobial susceptibility profiles were also evaluated. Results: ERIC-PCR was found to be rapid and reproducible with a discriminatory index of 0.766. The dendrogram constructed based on ERIC-PCR fingerprinting revealed the existence of 12 distinct genotypes. The location suspected to have an outbreak displayed two genotypes amongst the 24 isolates. The other two locations (18 isolates) displayed genetic heterogeneity. The clonality of the outbreak isolates from the time-matched control isolates was established. The observed antimicrobial susceptibility profiles did not have any discriminatory power to subtype the isolates compared to the genetic fingerprints. Interpretation & conclusions: Our study demonstrated the discriminatory power and value of ERIC-PCR in the typing of S. Typhi isolates and providing valuable epidemiological insights.

Abstract
CRISPR-multi-locus virulence sequence typing (CRISPR-MVLST) was performed to type 92 S. Typhimurium strains isolated from humans and food sources between 1983 and 2013 in Brazil and assess the suitability of this methodology comparing it with PFGE already used for subtyping the same strains. Among the 92 S. Typhimurium strains studied, we identified 25 CRISPR1 alleles, 27 CRISPR2 alleles, 2 fimH alleles and 3 sseL alleles showing that the genetic variability is much higher in the CRISPRs loci than in the virulence genes. The CRISPR-MVLST analysis provided similar results to the PFGE previously published used to type the same set of strains, demonstrating that CRISPR-MVLST is a very efficient approach for subtyping S. Typhimurium serovar and can be used to complement and validate results obtained by the PFGE methodology.

Abstract
AIMS The aims of this study were to assess the pathogenic potential, antimicrobial resistance and genotypic diversity of Salmonella Typhimurium strains isolated in Brazil from swine (22) and the surrounding swine environment (5) from 2000 to 2012 and compare them to the profiles of 43 human strains isolated from 1983 to 2010, which had been previously studied. METHODS AND RESULTS The presence of 12 SPI-1, SPI-2 and plasmid genes was assessed by PCR, the antimicrobial susceptibility to 13 antimicrobials was determined by the disc diffusion assay and genotyping was performed using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), multiple-locus variable-number of tandem repeats analysis (MLVA) and ERIC-PCR. More than 77·8% of the swine strains carried 10 or more of the virulence markers. Ten (37%) strains isolated from swine were multi-drug resistant (MDR). All the molecular typing techniques grouped the strains in two main clusters. Some strains isolated from swine and humans were allocated together in the PFGE-B2, MLVA-A1, MLVA-B and ERIC-A1 clusters. CONCLUSIONS The genotyping results suggest that some strains isolated from swine and humans may descend from a common subtype and may indicate a possible risk of MDR S. Typhimurium with high frequency of virulence genes isolated from swine to contaminate humans in Brazil. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This study provided new information about the pathogenic potential, antimicrobial resistance and genotypic diversity of S. Typhimurium isolates from swine origin in Brazil, the fourth largest producer of pigs worldwide.

Abstract
Salmonella is the most common etiological agent of cases and outbreaks of foodborne diarrheal illnesses. The emergence and spread of Salmonella spp., which has become multi-drug resistant and potentially more pathogenic, have increased the concern with this pathogen. In this study, 237 Salmonella spp., associated or not with foodborne salmonellosis in Brazil, belonging mainly to serotype Enteritidis, were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility and the presence of the virulence genes spvC, invA, sefA and pefA. Of the isolates, 46.8% were sensitive to all antimicrobials and 51.9% were resistant to at least one antimicrobial agent. Resistance to more than one antimicrobial agent was observed in 10.5% of the strains. The highest rates of resistance were observed for streptomycin (35.9%) and nalidixic acid (16.9%). No strain was resistant to cefoxitin, cephalothin, cefotaxime, amikacin, ciprofloxacin and imipenem. The invA gene was detected in all strains. Genes spvC and pefA were found in 48.1% and 44.3% of strains, respectively. The gene sefA was detected in 31.6% of the strains and only among S. Enteritidis. Resistance and virulence determinants were detected in Salmonella strains belonging to several serotypes. The high rates of antibiotic-resistance in strains isolated from poultry products demonstrate the potential risk associated with the consumption of these products and the need to ensure good food hygiene practices from farm to table to reduce the spread of pathogens relevant to public health.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was (i) To attempt isolation and identification of Salmonella species from samples. (ii) Serotyping of Salmonella isolates. (iii) Detection of virulence factor associated genes by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 284 samples comprised of chevon and mutton (112 samples each) as well as 60 samples (20 each of retail meat shops environment samples viz. Butchers' hands, knives and log swabs) were collected from the retail meat shops in and around Anand City under aseptic precautions. Rappaport-vassiliadis soy bean meal broth and tetrathionate broth was used for the enrichment of all the samples and inoculation was done on brilliant green agar and xylose lysine deoxycholate agar. This was followed by the confirmation of isolates using biochemical tests. For the serotyping, isolates were sent to the National Salmonella and Escherichia Centre, Central Research Institute, Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh. Detection of virulence genes was performed by PCR technique using previously reported primer. RESULT Of 284 meats and retail meat shops environment samples, 13 (4.58%) samples were found positive for Salmonella. It was interesting to know that incidence of Salmonella was more in mutton (6.25%) than chevon (3.57%). In case of meat shop environmental samples 1 (5.00%) sample observed positive for Salmonella separately among the butchers' hands and knives swabs (Each of 20 samples) examined. Out of 13, eleven isolates detected as Salmonella Typhimurium, whereas only two isolates were detected as Salmonella Enteritidis. All Salmonella isolates possess invA and stn genes, whereas nine isolates had a presence of spvR gene while only five of the isolates revealed the presence of spvC gene as shown by in vitro detection of virulence genes by PCR. CONCLUSION Therefore, might be suggested that the good hygiene practices and effective control measures should be taken to encourage clean meat production with prolonged shelf-life.

Abstract
Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica plays a role as a foodborne pathogen worldwide. The consumption of contaminated pork has been associated with human salmonellosis and the increase in antimicrobial resistance among Salmonella from pigs and pork products is a concern. A total of 225 Salmonella isolates from feed mills, the lairage environment, and the intestinal contents of pigs and carcasses were investigated for their antimicrobial susceptibility. A MIC for ciprofloxacin was screened by agar dilution, and antimicrobial resistance genes were investigated by PCR assays. Among the tested isolates, 171 (76%) showed resistance to at least one antimicrobial agent, and 91 (40.4%) were multiresistant. Resistance occurred most frequently to tetracycline (54.5%), sulfonamides (39.6%), and streptomycin (33.7%). Thirty-two (94.1%) nalidixic acid-resistant isolates exhibited decreased susceptibility to ciprofloxacin. The resistance genes found were blaTEM (ampicillin), tet(A) (tetracycline), tet(B) (tetracycline/minocycline), sul1, sul2, and sul3 (sulfonamides), catA1 (chloramphenicol), floR (florfenicol/chloramphenicol), strA and strB (streptomycin), aph(3')-Ia (kanamycin), aac(3)-IIa and aac(3)-IVa (apramycin/gentamicin), aadA variant (streptomycin/spectinomycin), and dfrA1 (trimethoprim). Salmonella isolates from pig feces and carcasses displayed a higher frequency of resistance to most antimicrobials tested than isolates from feed mills. Common resistance gene profiles were found in isolates from the lairage and the intestinal content of pigs and carcasses, demonstrating that resistance genes selected on farms may be found in pork.

Abstract
Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar 4,[5],12:i:- DT193 is recognized as an emerging monophasic variant of Salmonella Typhimurium in many European countries. Resistance to ampicillin, streptomycin, sulphonamides, and tetracycline (R-type ASSuT) is described as one of the most common profiles of resistance within this clone. Recently, strains presenting such features were isolated from two unrelated outbreaks in Italy. Strains were characterized by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), performed with XbaI, BlnI, and SpeI, and multiple-locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA). XbaI-PFGE showed strains related to the two outbreaks as indistinguishable. Conversely, both BlnI-PFGE and MLVA characterized the strains related the two outbreaks as different. XbaI-PFGE identified two profiles, differing by one band, within strains isolated from one of the two outbreaks. Also BlnI-PFGE and MLVA generated different profiles among the strains related to that outbreak. Combining the PFGE profiles obtained by XbaI and BlnI and comparing them with the MLVA profiles, the two methods grouped the same isolates based on identity. Moreover, genomic deletions of the genes included in the operon fljAB, the flanking iroB gene, and the closely located STM2757 gene were investigated. For all strains, the same profile of deletion characterized by the absence of fljA, fljB, and hin genes and the presence of STM2757 and iroB genes was identified. This profile of deletion represents a mixture between two profiles of Salmonella 4,[5],12:i:- described as the "Spanish" and the "U.S." clones. This study demonstrated that although strains of Salmonella 4,[5],12:i:- DT193 ASSuT are highly clonal, minor differences between strains may be seen during the same outbreak by using in parallel PFGE with different restriction enzymes, MLVA, and the analysis of molecular markers related to the operon fljAB. The combination of these different molecular approaches was essential to clarify the epidemiological relationship among the strains.

Abstract
A plasmid harboring eltB, the gene encoding heat-labile enterotoxin (LTB), was constructed by insertion of eltB into an Asd(+) β-lactamase signal plasmid (pMMP65). This was introduced into the Δlon ΔcpxR Δasd Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium strain and designated the LTB adjuvant strain. LTB protein production and secretion from the strain were demonstrated with an immunoblot assay and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The LTB strain was evaluated for enhancement of immunity and protection efficacy induced by a previously constructed live Salmonella vaccine candidate. In addition, immunization strategies using the LTB strain were optimized for effective salmonellosis protection. Seventy female BALB/c mice were divided into seven groups (A to G; n = 10 mice per group). Mice were primed at 6 weeks of age and boosted at 9 weeks of age. All mice were orally challenged with a virulent wild-type strain at week 3 postbooster. Serum IgG and IgA titers from mice immunized with the LTB strain alone or with a mixture of the LTB strain and the vaccine candidate were significantly increased. The secretory IgA titers from mice immunized with the LTB strain alone or with the mixture were at least 2.2 times greater than those of control mice. In addition, all group E mice (primed with the vaccine-LTB mixture and boosted with the vaccine candidate) were free of clinical signs of salmonellosis and survived a virulent challenge. In contrast, death due to the challenge was 100% in control mice, 80% in group A mice (single immunization with the vaccine candidate), 60% in group B mice (primed and boosted with the vaccine candidate), 40% in group C mice (single immunization with the LTB strain), 30% in group D mice (primed and boosted with the LTB strain), and 30% in group F mice (primed and boosted with the vaccine-LTB mixture). These results suggest that vaccination with the LTB strain, especially when added at the prime stage only, effectively enhances immune responses and protection against salmonellosis.

Abstract
Forty-six Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) strains were isolated from chicken meat, faeces, and eggshells collected from hatcheries throughout Korea. The strains were examined for the presence of antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes. All 46 isolates were resistant to at least one of 21 antibiotics used in this study, 30 (65.2%) were resistant to three or more antimicrobials, and a single remarkable isolate was resistant to 15 antimicrobials. The isolates were primarily resistant to penicillins, sulfisoxazole, streptomycin, tetracycline and quinolones. The high rate of resistance in S. Enteritidis strains, sometimes to multiple drugs, may complicate future options for treating human infections. Nineteen of the 21 penicillin resistant isolates carried the bla(TEM) gene, while one strain, resistant both to penicillins and ceftriaxone, carried the bla(CTX-M) gene. Thirty-seven of the 45 sulfisoxazole resistant isolates carried sul2, and 23/24 streptomycin resistant isolates carried both strA and strB. All 10 tetracycline resistant isolates carried the tet(A) gene. Most isolates harboured both SPI-1 and SPI-2-associated genes, and the spv operon, which are known to be associated with human infections. The presence of these genes suggests that these strains could give rise to public health problems if dispersed in the general human population.

Abstract
AIMS In this study, we used two molecular fingerprinting methods to investigate the genetic and clonal relationship shared by Australian Salmonella Sofia isolates. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 84 Australian Salm. Sofia isolates from various states in Australia were typed using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) (XbaI and SpeI) and repetitive element PCR (REP1R-I primer). The previous problem of DNA degradation of Salm. Sofia strains was solved by modifying the lysis solution used to treat the bacterial plugs, allowing Salm. Sofia to be subtyped using PFGE. Molecular typing of isolates resulted in the generation of eight XbaI, six SpeI and five REP1 pattern profiles. Individual typing methods showed low discrimination index values (<0·5), indicating the poor discriminatory ability of the methods. However, the combination of the typing methods was able to improve the discrimination of isolates, further dividing them into 16 subtypes and raising the index value to 0·721. CONCLUSIONS The combination of typing methods was shown to be the best approach to fingerprint Salm. Sofia. The Australian Salm. Sofia isolates only showed limited genetic diversity and probably share a clonal relationship. A majority of the Salm. Sofia isolates were not geographically restricted with the predominant pattern subtype observed amongst the isolates from various states. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY We have successfully devised a PFGE protocol that counteracts DNase activity of Salm. Sofia, enabling typing of this serovar.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To study the evolution of antibiotic resistance in isolates of Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serovar Typhimurium (Salmonella Typhimurium) obtained in Uruguay between the years 1976 and 2000, and to determine the incidence of class 1 and 2 integrons in the multi-resistant isolates. METHODS We studied 258 strains of Salmonella Typhimurium from various sources, isolated between 1976 and 2000. We determined the evolution of antibiotic resistance and the distribution of class 1 and 2 integrons in all isolates by means of disk diffusion assays and PCR. RESULTS During the period 1989-2000 resistance to streptomycin was 56.8%, tetracycline 13.6%, sulfonamides 11.2%, and ampicillin 7.2%. Resistance to gentamicin, kanamycin, chloramphenicol, and nalidixic acid were lower than 5%; no resistance was detected to fluoroquinolones, oxyiminocephalosporins, and amikacin. These results show a dramatic decrease with respect to values found in the period 1976-1988. In this period, resistance to streptomycin was 63.2%, tetracycline 36.8%, sulfonamides 32.3%, and ampicillin 27.8%. Throughout the two periods, 29 multi-resistant Salmonella Typhimurium strains were isolated harboring some class of integron: 15 strains had only intI2, 11 strains presented both intI1 and intI2, and three isolates only intI1. CONCLUSIONS Our results show a marked decrease in resistance throughout these years, along with a correlation between resistance to different antibiotics and the presence of integrons.

Abstract
A total of 108 enterococcal strains previously isolated from spontaneously fermented sausages were identified using phenotypic traits, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), and sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. The proteolytic and lipolytic activities of these isolates and their ability to decarboxylate lysine, tyrosine, ornithine, and histidine and to produce antimicrobial compounds also were assessed. All strains were identified as Enterococcus faecium, and a lack of correlation between data derived from phenotypic and those derived from genotypic techniques was evident. Wide strain diversity was revealed by both phenotypic properties and PFGE strain typing results. Few strains were present in all batches, suggesting a possible persistence in the respective production plants. Neither proteolytic nor lipolytic activities were detected, and none of the strains decarboxylated lysine, tyrosine, ornithine, or histidine. A total of 42 E. faecium strains inhibited in vitro growth of Listeria monocytogenes, which suggests possible contribution of these strains to the safety of the end product and possible utilization of these strains as protective cultures.
