Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) in a freshwater food web from Dianshan Lake: Occurrence level, congener pattern and trophic transfer

Spatial distribution and ecological risk assessment of short and medium chain chlorinated paraffins in water and sediments of river Ravi, Pakistan

Short (SCCPs) and medium (MCCPs) chain chlorinated paraffins being the emerging organic pollutants have raised serious concerns due to their widespread use and related human health risks. However, their occurrence in aquatic bodies like rivers and associated damage to ecological integrity is yet unknown in some regions of the world. The current study is the first ever assessment of SCCPs and MCCPs in sediment and water of river Ravi, Pakistan. Investigating the levels, spatial distribution, and trophic transfer patterns of short-chain chlorinated paraffins in the Southern Bohai Sea, China

The marine environment of the southern Bohai Sea is severely polluted by short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs). To improve understanding of how SCCPs occur and of how they migrate, are transformed, and transferred in this area, we collected seawater, sediment, and organism samples, and determined the SCCP contents using a new approach based on high-resolution mass spectrometry. The ΣSCCP concentrations in the seawater, sediment, and organism samples ranged from 57.5 to 1150.4 ng/L, 167.7-1105.9 ng/g (dry weight), and 11.4-583.0 ng/g (wet weight), respectively. Simulation of the spatial distribution of SCCPs using Kriging interpolation showed that SCCPs were markedly influenced by land-based pollution. Substantial quantities of SCCPs were transported to the marine environment via surface runoff from rivers that passed through areas of major SCCP production. Once discharged from such rivers into the Bohai Sea, these SCCPs were further dispersed under the influence of ocean currents. Furthermore, the logarithmic bioaccumulation factor that varied from 2.12 to 3.20 and the trophic magnification factor that reached 5.60 (r2 = 0.750, p < 0.01) suggest that organisms have the ability to accumulate and biomagnify SCCPs through the food chain, which could potentially present risks to both marine ecosystems and human health.

Uptake, accumulation and toxicity of short chain chlorinated paraffins to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) are ubiquitous persistent organic pollutants. They have been widely detected in plant-based foods and might cause adverse impacts on humans. Nevertheless, uptake and accumulation mechanisms of SCCPs in plants remain unclear. In this study, the soil culture data indicated that SCCPs were strongly absorbed by roots (root concentration factor, RCF>1) yet limited translocated to shoots (translocation factor<1). The uptake mechanism was explored by hydroponic exposure, showing that hydrophobicity and molecular size influenced the root uptake and translocation of SCCPs. RCFs were significantly correlated with logKow values and molecular weights in a parabolic curve relationship. Besides, it was extremely difficult for SCCPs to translocate from shoots back to roots via phloem. An active energy-dependent process was proposed to be involved in the root uptake of SCCPs, which was supported by the uptake inhibition by the low temperature and metabolic inhibitor. Though SCCPs at environmentally relevant concentrations had no negative impacts on root morphology and chlorophyll contents, it caused obvious changes in cellular ultrastructure of root tip cells and induced a significant increase in superoxide dismutase activity. This information may be beneficial to moderate crop contamination by SCCPs, and to remedy soils polluted by SCCPs with plants.

Comprehensive characterization and prioritization of halogenated organic compounds in fish and their implications for exposure

Fish are an important pollution indicator for biomonitoring of halogenated organic compounds (HOCs) in aquatic environments, and HOCs in fish may pose health threats to consumers. This study performed nontarget and comprehensive analyses of HOCs in fish from an e-waste recycling zone by gas chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry, and further prioritized their human exposure risks. A total of 1652 formulas of HOCs were found in the fish, of which 1222, 117, and 313 were organochlorines, organobromines, and organochlorine-bromines, respectively. The total concentrations of HOCs were 15.4-18.7 μg/g (wet weight), and organobromines were the predominant (14.1-16.8 μg/g). Of the HOCs, 41 % were elucidated with tentative structures and divided into 13 groups. The estimated total daily exposures of HOCs via dietary consumption of the fish for local adult residents were 3082-3744 ng/kg bw/day. The total exposures were dominated by several groups of HOCs with the following contribution order: polyhalogenated biphenyls and their derivatives > polyhalogenated diphenyl ethers > halo- (H-)alkanes/olefines > H-benzenes > H-dioxins > H-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons > H-phenols. The comprehensive characterization and prioritization results provide an overview of the species and distributions of HOCs in edible fish, and propose an inventory of crucial HOCs associated with high exposure risks.

Parabens and their metabolite in a marine benthic-dominated food web from the Beibu gulf, South China Sea: Occurrence, trophic transfer and health risk assessment

Parabens are of particular concern due to their ubiquity in aquatic environments and endocrine-disrupting effects. However, information on their bioaccumulation and trophic magnification is limited. In the present study, we performed a comprehensive survey to investigate the occurrence, bioaccumulation and trophic magnification of parabens and their metabolite 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (4-HB) in a marine food web from the Beibu Gulf, South China Sea. Results showed that methylparaben (MeP) and 4-HB were the predominant target pollutants in marine organisms, with their concentrations being in the range of 0.18-13.77 and 13.48-222.24 ng/g wet weight, respectively. The bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) for target analytes were all lower than 5000, suggesting negligible bioaccumulation. However, the biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) for MeP and 4-HB were 4.51 and 3.21, respectively, which indicates significant bioaccumulation from the sediment. Furthermore, the estimated trophic magnification factor (TMF) was 2.88 for MeP, suggesting its biomagnification along the food web. In contrast, a lower TMF of 0.45 was found for 4-HB, suggesting trophic dilution along the food web. The hazard quotients (HQs) for parabens were far less than 1 in all organisms, suggesting low risks for humans through consuming marine organisms from the Beibu Gulf. This study provides substantial data on the fate and trophic transfer of parabens in a subtropical marine ecosystem.

Freshwater environment risk assessment and derivation of human health ambient water quality criteria for SCCPs in China

Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs, CxH2x+2-yCly, where x = 10 to 13 and y = 3 to x) are a complex family of emerging contaminants that have been identified as persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) substances. Because of their persistence, high toxicity, bioaccumulation and long-distance mobility, SCCPs were added to the list of controlled POPs in the Stockholm Convention in 2017. China is the largest producer and user of SCCPs all over the world, thus SCCPs have been widely distributed in the freshwater environment. But the ecological risk and human health risk of SCCPs in China were still less evaluated. This study collected and screened the exposure data of SCCPs in freshwater environment in China, and then evaluated the freshwater and sediments ecological risk of SCCPs by risk quotient (RQ) method and the human health risk by margin of exposure (MOE) method. Our results showed that the pollution of SCCPs in the freshwater environment in China was not optimistic. The ecological risks and human health risks had occurred, and even there were high ecological risks occurred in some regions in China. Besides, because of the absence of the concentration threshold of SCCPs to protect human health in freshwater at present, we derived the human health ambient water quality criteria (AWQC) values of SCCPs based on exposure data and bioaccumulation factor (BAF) in China. The human health AWQC values of SCCPs ranged from 14.99 ng L-1 to 154.54 ng L-1 in different regions in China, and the national human health AWQC value was determined as 24.08 ng L-1. This study will provide the scientific references for the management and control of SCCPs in China, especially for the formulation of standard of water environmental quality for SCCPs.

Chlorinated Paraffin Pollution in the Marine Environment

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are ubiquitous in the environment due to their large-scale usage, persistence, and long-range atmospheric transport. The oceans are a critical environment where CPs transformation occurs. However, the broad impacts of CPs on the marine environment remain unclear. This review describes the sources, occurrence and transport pathways, environmental processes, and ecological effects of CPs in the marine environment. CPs are distributed in the global marine environment by riverine input, ocean currents, and long-range atmospheric transport from industrial areas. Environmental processes, such as the deposition of particle-bound compounds, leaching of plastics, and microbial degradation of CPs, are the critical drivers for regulating CPs' fate in water columns or sediment. Bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of CPs in marine food webs may threaten marine ecosystem functions. To elucidate the biogeochemical processes and environmental impacts of CPs in marine environments, future work should clarify the burden and transformation process of CPs and reveal their ecological effects. The results would help readers clarify the current research status and future research directions of CPs in the marine environment and provide the scientific basis and theoretical foundations for the government to assess marine ecological risks of CPs and to make policies for pollution prevention and control.

Chlorinated paraffins in multimedia during residential interior finishing: Occurrences, behavior, and health risk

Though with bioaccumulation and toxicity, chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are still high produced and widely utilized in various daily necessities for extender plasticization and flame retardation. CPs can be released during the reprocessing processes of finishing materials and distributed in multi-environmental media. Herein, concentrations and compositions of CPs in four representative media including interior finishing materials, PM10, total suspended particulate (TSP), and dust samples collected from eight interior finishing stages were studied. Unexpectedly, CP concentrations in ceramic tiles was found to be high with a mean value of 7.02 × 103 μg g-1, which could be attributed to the presence of CPs in the protective wax coated on ceramic tiles surfaces. Furthermore, the pollution characteristics of short-chain and medium-chain CPs (SCCPs and MCCPs) in those samples were inconsistent. According to the investigation regarding Kdust-TSP and [Formula: see text] , the occurrence and distribution of CPs in indoor atmospheric particles (PM10 and TSP) and dust were highly affected by reprocessing processes (cutting, hot melting, etc.) compared to that in the finishing materials. Moreover, dermal contact was the primary pathway of CP exposure for the occupational population (interior construction workers) for most interior finishing stages, and the interior finishing process is the prime CP exposure period for the occupational groups. As suggested by our assessment, though hardly posing an immediate health risk, CPs exposure still presents unneglected adverse health effects, which calls for adequate personal protections during interior finishing, especially in developing countries.

Short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins in fish from an anthropized south-western Atlantic estuary, Bahía Blanca, Argentina

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are synthetic organic compounds of growing environmental and social concern. Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) were listed under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in 2017. Further, in 2021, medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) were proposed to be listed as POPs. We investigated SCCP and MCCP amounts and homolog profiles in four wild fish species from Bahía Blanca Estuary, a South Atlantic Ocean coastal habitat in Argentina. SCCPs and MCCPs were detected in 41% and 36% of the samples, respectively. SCCP amounts ranged from <12 to 29 ng g^-1 wet weight and <750-5887 ng g^-1 lipid weight, whereas MCCP amounts ranged from <7 to 19 ng g^-1 wet weight and <440-2848 ng g^-1 lipid weight. Amounts were equivalent to those found in fish from the Arctic and Antarctic Oceans and from some North American and Tibetan Plateau lakes. We performed a human health risk assessment and found no direct risks to human health for SCCP or MCCP ingestion, according to present knowledge. Regarding their environmental behavior, no significant differences were observed among SCCP amounts, sampling locations, species, sizes, lipid content, and age of the specimens. However, there were significant differences in MCCP amounts across species, which could be attributed to fish size and feeding habits. Homolog profiles in all fish were dominated by the medium-chlorinated (Cl₆ and Cl₇) CPs and shorter chain length CPs were the most abundant, with C₁₀Cl₆ (12.8%) and C₁₁Cl₆ (10.1%) being the predominant SCCPs and C₁₄Cl₆ (19.2%) and C₁₄Cl₇ (12.4%) the predominant MCCPs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on the presence of CPs in the environment in Argentina and the South Atlantic Ocean. CP occurrence in the environment, particularly in the food chain, promotes the need for further research on their occurrence and behavior, and the impact of CPs in marine ecosystems in Argentina.

Source toxicity characteristics of short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffin in multi-environmental media: Product source toxicity, molecular source toxicity and food chain migration control through silica methods

Short and medium-chain chlorinated paraffin (SCCP/MCCP) have been widely studied because of their extensive environmental hazards. In this study, product source toxicity, molecular source toxicity and food chain migration of SCCP and MCCP in multi-environmental media were comprehensively considered. The additive combination of SCCP and MCCP in the air, water and soil environment was adjusted, and PVC, PU and rubber products with the lowest source toxicity were screened. The source toxicity of SCCP and MCCP in the water environment was inhibited by design of the feed additive addition scheme (highest inhibition was 16.29 %), and the source toxicity of SCCP and MCCP in the soil environment was affected by different field management measures (highest inhibition was 38.22 %). A forage fertilizer addition plan, a cattle feed addition plan and a special population healthy complementary food regulation plan were developed to prevent the migration step by step and absorption of SCCP and MCCP in the terrestrial food chain. In addition, by means of density functional theory and analysis of key amino acid residues, the mechanism of toxicity difference between SCCP and MCCP was analyzed from the level of chemical interaction, and rationality of the inhibition scheme designed in this study was verified.

The potential health risks of short-chain chlorinated paraffin: A mini-review from a toxicological perspective

Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) are ubiquitously distributed in various environmental matrics due to their wide production and consumption globally in the past and ongoing production and use in some developing countries. SCCPs have been detected in various human samples including serum, milk, placenta, nail, and hair, and internal SCCP levels were found to be positively correlated with biomarkers of some diseases. While the environmental occurrence has been reported in a lot of studies, the toxicity and underlying molecular mechanisms of SCCPs remain largely unknown. The current tolerable daily intakes (TDIs) recommended by the world health organization/international programme on chemical safety (WHO/IPCS, 100 μg/kg bw/d) and the UK Committee on Toxicity (COT, 30 μg/kg bw/d) were obtained based on a no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) of SCCP from the repeated-dose study (90 d exposure) in rodents performed nearly 40 years ago. Importantly, the health risks assessment of SCCPs in a variety of studies has shown that the estimated daily intakes (EDIs) may approach and even over the established TDI by UK COT. Furthermore, recent studies revealed that lower doses of SCCPs could also result in damage to multiple organs including the liver, kidney, and thyroid. Long-term effects of SCCPs at environmental-related doses are warranted.

Distinct biomagnification of chlorinated persistent organic pollutants in adjacent aquatic and terrestrial food webs

Biomagnification of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in food webs has been studied for many years. However, the different processes and influencing factors in biomagnification of POPs in aquatic and terrestrial food webs still need clarification. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) were measured in organisms from adjacent terrestrial and aquatic environment in this study. The median levels of PCBs in terrestrial and aquatic organisms were 21.7-138 ng/g lw and 37.1-149 ng/g lw, respectively. SCCP concentrations were 18.6-87.3 μg/g lw and 21.4-93.9 μg/g lw in terrestrial and aquatic organisms, respectively. Biomagnification factors (BMFs) of PCBs increased with higher log K_OW in all food chains. BMFs of SCCPs were negatively correlated with log K_OW in aquatic food chains, but positively correlated with log K_OW in terrestrial food chains. The terrestrial food web had similar trophic magnification factors (TMFs) of PCBs, and higher TMFs of SCCPs than the aquatic food web. Biomagnification of PCBs was consistent in aquatic and terrestrial food webs, while SCCPs had higher biomagnification potential in terrestrial than aquatic organisms. The distinct biomagnification of SCCPs was affected by the respiratory elimination for terrestrial organisms, the different metabolism rates in various species, and more homotherms in terrestrial food webs. Fugacity model can well predict levels of less hydrophobic chemicals, and warrants more precise toxicokinetic data of SCCPs.

Bioaccumulation and Biotransformation of Chlorinated Paraffins

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs), a class of persistent, toxic, and bioaccumulated compounds, have received increasing attention for their environmental occurrence and ecological and human health risks worldwide in the past decades. Understanding the environmental behavior and fate of CPs faces a huge challenge owing to the extremely complex CP congeners. Consequently, the aims of the present study are to summarize and integrate the bioaccumulation and biotransformation of CPs, including the occurrence of CPs in biota, tissue distribution, biomagnification, and trophic transfer, and biotransformation of CPs in plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates in detail. Biota samples collected in China showed higher CP concentrations than other regions, which is consistent with their huge production and usage. The lipid content is the major factor that determines the physical burden of CPs in tissues or organs. Regarding the bioaccumulation of CPs and their influence factors, inconsistent results were obtained. Biotransformation is an important reason for this variable. Some CP congeners are readily biodegradable in plants, animals, and microorganisms. Hydroxylation, dechlorination, chlorine rearrangement, and carbon chain decomposition are potential biotransformation pathways for the CP congeners. Knowledge of the influence of chain length, chlorination degree, constitution, and stereochemistry on the tissue distribution, bioaccumulation, and biotransformation is still scarce.

Transplacental transfer of plasticizers and flame retardants in fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) from the North Atlantic Ocean

Marine mammals are one of the groups of animals most affected by marine pollution including that by organic compounds which, besides bearing recognised harmful effects to adults, they may also affect foetuses through placental transfer. In this study we analysed samples of fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) females and their foetuses collected in the western Iceland summer feeding grounds in 2018. Three different families of organic pollutants: organophosphate esters (OPEs); halogenated flame retardants (HFRs); and short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs), were analysed and their placental transfer investigated. HFRs were detected in 87.5% of females and 100% of foetus samples with concentrations that ranged between nd-15.4 and 6.37-101 ng/g lipid weight (lw), respectively. OPEs were detected in all samples, both from females (85.8-567 ng/g lw) and foetuses (nq-1130 ng/g lw). SCCPs were detected in 87.5% of female samples and 100% of foetal samples with concentrations that ranged between nd-30.9 and nq-574 ng/g lw, respectively. For OPE compounds, a significant negative correlation was observed between the logarithm maternal transfer ratio and their log K_ow, indicating that a high lipophilicity reduced placental transfer rate. Interestingly, the decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) was the compound with the highest log K_ow but also the one that was transferred the most from mothers to foetuses, calling for in-depth research on this pollutant. These results constitute the first evidence of mother-calf transfer of plasticizers and flame retardants in fin whales. Further investigations are needed to determine their potential effects on this species and other groups of animals.

Levels of Short- and Medium-Chain Chlorinated Paraffins in Edible Insects and Implications for Human Exposure

This study reports on the occurrence and distribution of short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs and MCCPs, respectively) in edible insects purchased from Asia and Europe. A total of 36 edible insect samples (n = 24 from Asia, n = 12 from Europe) authorized and prepared for human consumption were purchased and analyzed for SCCPs and MCCPs via gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. SCCPs were detected in 83% of all edible insect samples with an overall median ∑SCCP concentration of 8.7 ng/g dry weight (dw) and a range of <2.0 to 410 ng/g dw, while MCCPs were present in 92% of samples with a median ∑MCCP concentration of 51 ng/g dw and a range of <6.0 to 380 ng/g dw. Median ∑SCCP and ∑MCCP levels in edible insects purchased in Asia were approximately two- and four-times higher, respectively, than those from Europe, while the difference was statistically significant for ∑MCCPs (p < 0.001). Differences in homologue patterns were also observed between Asian and European samples to suggest diverse sources of CP contamination to insects which may include environmental accumulation, industrial processing equipment and food additives. Estimated daily intake of SCCPs and MCCPs via consumption of edible insects suggested that adverse health outcomes were very unlikely, but that continued monitoring of insect farming and processing practices are warranted.

Occurrence, Distribution and Health Risk of Short-Chain Chlorinated Paraffins (SCCPs) in China: A Critical Review

With being listed in the Stockholm Convention, the ban on short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) has been put on the agenda in China. Based on the literature over the past decade, this study comprehensively analyzed the occurrence, distribution of and human exposure to SCCPs in China, aiming to provide a reference for the changes in SCCPs after the ban. SCCPs were ubiquitous in environmental matrices, and the levels were considerably higher than those in other countries. SCCPs from the emission region were 2–4 orders of magnitude higher than those in the background area. Environmental processes may play an important role in the SCCP profiles in the environment, and C10 and Cl6 were identified as potential factors distinguishing their spatial distribution. River input was the dominant source in the sea areas, and atmospheric transport was the main source in the remote inland areas. Ingestion and dermal absorption and food intake may pose potential risk to residents, especially for children and infants. More studies are needed on their temporal trend, source emission and environmental degradation. The enactment of the restriction order will have a great impact on China’s CP industry; nevertheless, it will play a positive role in the remediation of SCCP pollution in the environment.

Spatiotemporal distribution and risk assessment of short-chain chlorinated paraffins in 30 major rivers in Taiwan

Because of their highly persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic properties, short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) have become emerging contaminants and have been included in Annex A (elimination) of the Stockholm Convention since 2017. The contamination of SCCPs has been observed in the environment and biota worldwide but has not been detected in Taiwanese river ecosystems. Thus, this study aimed to determine the occurrence of SCCPs in sediments and fish from 30 major rivers in Taiwan and to evaluate the risk of SCCPs to river ecosystems and human health. The concentrations of SCCPs in sediments and fish ranged from ND (not detected) to 12.6 mg/kg dw and ND to 2.07 mg/kg ww, respectively. The concentrations of SCCPs in sediments were significantly correlated with some indicators of the discharge sources and water quality variables, indicating that SCCPs were released via human activities and various discharges into rivers and accumulated in sediments. The bioaccumulation of SCCPs in fish exhibited species-specific profiles and was related to environmental contamination levels and the living pattern and trophic level of the fish. The SCCP levels in sediments from 20 major rivers in Taiwan might pose a potential ecological risk to river ecosystems according to the criteria of the Federal Environmental Quality Guidelines in Canada, the biota-sediment accumulation factor and the risk quotient. Consumption of SCCP-contaminated river fish by different gender and age groups showed no significant health risk to residents in Taiwan evaluated by the estimated daily intake and hazard quotient. However, there was a health concern for the 0- to 3-year-old group due to the consumption of contaminated river fish at a bioaccessibility of 100% for SCCPs by the margin of exposure. Routine monitoring of SCCPs in river ecosystems is needed to protect aquatic organisms and human health.

Temporal and spatial trends of chlorinated paraffins and organophosphate flame retardants in black-tailed gull (Larus crassirostris) eggs

In this study, eggs of black-tailed gull (Larus crassirostris), a top trophic level predator of marine ecosystem were, for the first time, monitored to assess the temporal and spatial trends of emerging pollutants in South Korea. Two Island regions, namely, Baekryeong-do (Site A) and Hong-do (Site B) were investigated from 2012 to 2018, and the total levels of short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs), medium chain CPs (MCCPs), and organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) for both Site A and B were 1180-2931 and 694-2023 ng/g lipid weight (lw), 1287-4898 and 1034-3075 ng/g lw, and 203-499 and 233-409 ng/g lw, respectively. The time-trends of the concentration of pollutants showed an increasing tendency from 2012 to 2018, with the levels predicted to be doubled within three years, following the results of regression analysis. A shift in temporal-trends from shorter to longer chain CPs was noted, suggesting the effect of industrial-related contamination. Especially, significantly high levels of CPs and OPFRs were found in the site adjacent to China, which is reasonable as China is the largest producer and consumer of FRs and plasticizers worldwide. This study is valuable to understand the temporal increment of emerging pollutants as the alternatives of phased-out FRs and plasticizers, while raising the need for continuous environmental management.

Bioaccumulation and trophic magnification of short chain chlorinated paraffins in marine organisms from East China Sea

As new persistent organic pollutants, short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) have recently received particular attention. However, knowledge on their bioaccumulation and trophic magnification in marine organisms from East China Sea (ECS) is still scare. In this study, we investigated the concentrations of SCCPs in seawater (n = 15) and marine organisms (n = 88) collected from ECS. The total concentrations of SCCPs (∑SCCPs) ranged from 12.5 to 242 ng/L in seawater and from 12.8 to 1819 ng/g wet weight (ww) in organisms. C_10-11 SCCPs and Cl_5-7 SCCPs were the predominant homologues in all samples, with the mean proportions of 70 ± 6.5% and 80 ± 7.8% in seawater, as well as 52-77% and 61-84% in marine organisms, respectively. The logarithm bioaccumulation factor (log BAF) values of ∑SCCPs were in the range of 2.04-3.79 in zooplankton, fish, shrimp, crab, shellfish, snail, and cephalopod. The log BAF values of SCCP homologues (1.33-4.75) increased significantly with the increase of their logarithm octanol-water partition coefficients (log K_OW) values, indicating that hydrophobicity is the major factor controlling the bioaccumulation of SCCPs. The trophic magnification factor (TMF) value of ∑SCCPs was calculated to be 3.98, indicating the potential trophic magnification of SCCPs in this marine food web from ECS. A slightly increasing trend was observed between the TMF values of SCCP homologues and their log K_OW values. Overall, for the first time, this study systematically examined the bioaccumulation and trophic magnification of SCCPs in the marine food web from East China Sea.

Accumulation of short-, medium-, and long- chain chlorinated paraffins in tissues of laying hens after dietary exposure

Reliable human health risk assessment associated with chlorinated paraffins (CPs) exposure is limited by the lack of data on the fate of this complex family of contaminants. To gain knowledge on the accumulation and distribution of CPs in biota after ingestion, laying hens were dietary exposed to technical mixtures of short- (SCCPs), medium- (MCCPs), or long-chain (LCCPs) CPs of various chlorine contents during 91 days, at 200 ng/g of feed, each. Adipose tissue, liver, muscle and serum were collected at the steady-state, along with excreta. All C₁₀-C₃₆ CPs were detected in liver. However, differences were observed in CP distribution: LCCPs high %Cl were retained in the liver; LCCPs low %Cl circulated through the serum and were distributed in the different compartments, but were mostly excreted through the eggs; SCCPs and MCCPs were found in all tissues at similar levels. Finally, a mass balance indicated a potential for biotransformation.

Short-chain chlorinated paraffins in soils indicate landfills as local sources in the Tibetan Plateau

Background contamination levels of contemporary persistent organic pollutants (POPs) may be elevated due to local discharges, and hence it is of high importance to assess and monitor them in alpine and Polar Regions. This study investigated the role of waste disposal in the Tibetan plateau as the local source of short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs). SCCPs were determined in soils from the urban landfill and rural dumpsites, with a concentration range of 56.8-1348 ng/g dw. The gradient descent of SCCP levels from Lhasa landfill to the surrounding soils with increasing distances suggested a significant SCCP release from waste disposal. The transport pattern was well fitted by the Boltzmann equation after normalization in terms of soil organic carbon contents. Compared to the landfill cells closed in early years, the recently closed cells contained higher concentrations but lower proportions of the short-chain congener groups, likely reflecting the SCCP use history in Tibet. In open-burning dumpsites, higher SCCP levels and dominance of lighter congener groups indicates that such crude waste treatment process might cause an extra release of volatile SCCPs. This study elucidates local SCCP inputs to the background environment, and demonstrates that both urbanization and badly-managed landfill have been contributing to the presence of contemporary POPs in the Tibetan Plateau.

A simplified screening method for short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins in food by gas chromatography-low resolution mass spectrometry

This study evaluates the performance of a simplified screening method for short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs and MCCPs, respectively) based on gas chromatography-electron capture negative ionization/mass spectrometry (GC-ECNI/MS) analysis and chlorine content quantification. The response from different combinations of 'indicator' congener groups present in technical mixture standards were used within calibration calculations to test the hypothesis that ∑SCCPs and ∑MCCPs could be quantified with acceptable accuracy using only a subset of the commonly analysed C₁₀ to C₁₇ and Cl₅ to Cl₁₀ groups. Potential combinations were assessed with respect to calibration curve performance and accuracy of SCCP and MCCP analysis of spiked food samples (olive oil, salmon, pork sausage, breakfast cereal, cow's milk and lard). Based on these trials, a screening method which quantifies ∑SCCPs and ∑MCCPs using only congener groups with 6 and 8 chlorine atoms for each carbon chain length was proposed. Concentrations of SCCPs and MCCPs in triplicate analyses of spiked food samples calculated using the proposed screening method deviated by ≤ 25% for the vast majority of samples (maximum deviation 37%) from levels determined using all analysed congener groups. The mean trueness of the screening method as applied to each of the spiked food samples and lard samples from a previous European Union Reference Laboratory (EURL) interlaboratory study ranged from 65 to 110% for ∑SCCPs and 102 to 175% for ∑MCCPs. Relative standard deviations (RSDs) were ≤ 25% for all triplicate analyses and matrix specific LOQs ranged from 0.7 to 6 ng/g ww for ∑SCCPs and from 1.3 to 12 ng/g ww for ∑MCCPs. The proposed screening method has the potential to deliver substantial time savings in instrumental analysis and manual labour without greatly reducing the overall accuracy and sensitivity of SCCP and MCCP quantification.

Transfer of short-, medium-, and long-chain chlorinated paraffins to eggs of laying hens after dietary exposure

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are a complex family of contaminants. Lack of exposure data and an understanding of the fate of these chemicals in the environment affect our ability to reliably assess the human health risk associated with CP exposure. The present study focused on the evaluation of CP transfer from feed to eggs of laying hens exposed over 91 days. Laying hens were provided feed spiked with five technical mixtures of short-, medium- or long-chain CPs and featuring low or high chlorine contents, at concentrations of 200 ng/g each. Eggs were collected daily. All mixtures except the LCCPs with high chlorine content transferred into the eggs, with accumulation ratios increasing with the chain length and chlorine content. Concentrations at the steady-state varied between 41 and 1397 ng/g lw depending on the mixture. Additionally, the homologue-dependant transfer resulted in a change of pattern compared to that from the spiked feed.

Occurrence, trophic magnification and potential risk of short-chain chlorinated paraffins in coral reef fish from the Nansha Islands, South China Sea

As emerging persistent organic pollutants in marine environment, short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) have attracted increasing attentions recently. Coral reefs are important ocean ecosystems. However, data on SCCP pollution in the coral reef regions is still unavailable. In the present work, bioaccumulation of SCCPs in the coral reef ecosystems was reported for the first time. SCCP concentrations in coral reef fish from the Nansha Islands of the South China Sea were in the range of 37.9-25,400 ng/g lipid weight (lw) (average: 4400 ± 6590 ng/g lw; median: 1020 ng/g lw). C₁₀ SCCPs were the dominating SCCP homologues, accounting for 59% to 80% of the total SCCPs (average: 70 ± 5.0%), followed by C₁₁ SCCPs (average: 23 ± 4.5%). Regarding chlorine substitution, SCCPs were dominated by Cl₇ SCCPs (average: 45 ± 2.5%) and Cl₈ SCCPs (average: 30 ± 5.4%). Trophic magnification factor (TMF) of total SCCPs was 8.5, indicating trophic magnification potential of SCCPs in the coral reef ecosystems. In addition, a parabolic relationship was established between TMFs and log K_ow of specific SCCP homologues. SCCP residues in the coral reef fish from the Nansha Islands of the South China Sea did not pose significant risk to human health.

Trophic Magnification of Short- and Medium-Chain Chlorinated Paraffins in Terrestrial Food Webs and Their Bioamplification in Insects and Amphibians during Metamorphosis

Studies on the biomagnification of short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs and MCCPs) in terrestrial ecosystems and their bioamplification during metamorphosis in insects and amphibians are scarce. Therefore, this study sought to characterize the occurrence and trophic dynamics of SCCPs and MCCPs in an insect-dominated terrestrial food web in an e-waste recycling site in South China. Median ∑SCCPs and ∑MCCPs concentrations in the organisms ranged from 2200 to 34 000 ng/g lipid weight and from 990 to 19 000 ng/g lipid weight, respectively. The homologue profiles of CPs in the predators were distinct from those in insects, presenting more short chain-high chlorinated congeners (C_10-12Cl_8-10). The trophic magnification factors (TMFs) of ∑SCCPs and ∑MCCPs were 2.08 and 2.45, respectively, indicating biomagnification in the terrestrial food web. A significant positive relationship between the TMFs and octanol-air partition coefficients was observed. TMFs were also positively correlated with chlorination degree but did not correlate with carbon chain length. Nonlinear correlations between metamorphosis-associated bioamplification and the octanol-water partition coefficients of SCCPs and MCCPs were observed for insects, whereas negative linear correlations were observed for amphibians, which suggested species-specific alterations to the chemicals during metamorphosis.

Short-chain chlorinated paraffins in various foods from Republic of Korea: Levels, congener patterns, and human dietary exposure

Short-chain chlorinated paraffin (SCCP) concentrations in 419 food samples (from 59 species) from Republic of Korea were determined. The SCCP concentrations and lipid contents in whole foods positively correlated and the highest SCCP concentration (891 ng/g wet weight) was observed in fats and oils. The SCCP concentrations were higher in benthic fish/shellfish and demersal fish than other fish and shellfish. The SCCP concentrations were higher in duck meat and eggs than meat and eggs of other species. The chlorine-based congener group patterns were related to the lipid contents of the foods. SCCPs in eggs (high lipid content) were dominated by more-chlorinated SCCPs (particularly Cl₈-SCCPs, which contributed 43% of the total) but SCCPs in seaweed (low lipid content) were dominated by less-chlorinated SCCPs (particularly Cl₆-SCCPs, which contributed 46%). Dietary SCCP intakes were calculated using the median SCCP concentrations and estimated 888 and 781 ng/kg/d for male and female Korean adults, respectively. The predominant contributing foods to SCCP dietary exposure differed according to sex and age. Dairy products contributed most (about 50%) for infants/children (1-5 y old), but meat and dairy products contributed most for adult males and females, respectively. Grain contributed most for ≥65 y old.

Advances in Studies on Toxic Effects of Short-Chain Chlorinated Paraffins (SCCPs) and Characterization of Environmental Pollution in China

Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) were included in the Stockholm Convention in 2017. SCCPs have persistence, bioaccumulation, long-range environmental mobility and biological toxicity, significant toxicity to aquatic organisms, and potential carcinogenicity. Little study was on the progress research on the current environmental pollution in China. We reviewed the pollution conditions of SCCPs in air, soil, and water and their accumulation in food and organisms in China, especially for the contaminations of aquatic ecosystem. Meanwhile, we summarize the recent studies on the toxic effects and toxicological mechanisms of SCCPs on aquatic organisms and mammals. Finally, the further direction and trends for SCCP research were proposed. More efforts are necessary to conduct a comprehensive risk assessment and evaluate the relative importance of the various exposure routes.

Spatial distribution and profile of atmospheric short-chain chlorinated paraffins in the Yangtze River Delta

Research on the atmospheric occurrence of short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) in industrialized areas is scarce. In this study, we investigated the concentrations, profile, and spatial distribution of SCCPs in the highly industrialized and developed areas of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) in China using polyurethane foam passive air samplers. Sampling was performed during two separate periods in 2011. The concentrations of atmospheric SCCPs ranged from 6.1 to 63 ng m^-3 in summer and 6.2-42 ng m^-3 in winter. The C₁₀ and C₁₁ groups were the predominant carbon groups in all the samples. Different congener patterns between summer and winter were found, indicating that congeners in the air in winter may be influenced by local and external sources. The highest level of SCCPs was found in Suzhou, which is a highly industrialized area with many manufactories including electronic industries and plastic factories. Higher levels of SCCPs were found in the air than polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDEs), suggesting that the production and use of SCCPs were much higher than prohibited or restricted persistent organic pollutants (e.g., PCBs, OCPs, and PBDEs). Future studies should investigate the different sources of atmospheric SCCPs by conducting a comprehensive assessment of SCCP exposure.

Short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins in aquatic organisms from an e-waste site: Biomagnification and maternal transfer

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are globally pervasive contaminants that are toxic to humans and wildlife. Inconsistent biomagnification behaviors in different food chains have been reported, and very few studies have been conducted to investigate the maternal transfer of CPs in ovoviviparous species. This study investigated the biomagnification of short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (S/MCCPs) in two aquatic food chains, as well as maternal transfer of S/MCCPs in watersnakes collected from an e-waste polluted pond in southern China. The concentrations of SCCPs and MCCPs varied from 1.2 to 250 μg/g lipid weight (lw) and from 2.3 to 200 μg/g lw in the collected organisms. The SCCP homologue profiles in prey (fish and prawn) differed from those in predators (watersnake and waterbird egg), while MCCP homologue group patterns were homogeneous. All maternal transfer concentration ratios (egg to muscle) of S/MCCPs in the watersnakes were lower than 1 and negatively correlated with the octanol-water partition coefficients (log K_OW), different from the maternal transfer of halogenated aromatic pollutants in the watersnake. Biomagnification factors (BMFs) of S/MCCPs for fish-watersnake muscle food chain were larger than 1, while BMFs for the fish-waterbird egg food chain were less than 1. However, when watersnake egg was used to calculate BMF, no biomagnification was found. BMFs in the two food chains showed significant positive linear correlations with chlorine atoms, but no significant correlation with carbon atom numbers, which suggested that a congener-group-specific elimination and excretion process for S/MCCPs exist.

Chlorinated Paraffins in Two Snake Species from the Yangtze River Delta: Tissue Distribution and Biomagnification

Very-short, short-, medium-, and long-chain chlorinated paraffins (vSCCPs, SCCPs, MCCPs, and LCCPs, respectively) were analyzed in different tissues of the terrestrial short-tailed mamushi (Gloydius brevicaudus) and the semi-aquatic red-backed rat snake (Elaphe rufodorsata) from the Yangtze River Delta, China. The total CP concentrations in liver, muscle, and adipose tissues in the two snake species were in the range of 2500-24 000, 4900-48 000, and 12-630 ng/g lw, respectively. Tissue burdens indicated that vSCCPs (C_6-9) and SCCPs (C_10-13) preferentially distributed to snake liver, while adipose was an important storage site and sink of MCCPs (C_14-17) and LCCPs (C_>18). On a lipid weight basis, vSCCPs and SCCPs were found in highest concentrations in red-backed rat snake liver and MCCPs and LCCPs in muscle, whereas for short-tailed mamushi, all CP groups were predominant in muscle, probably reflecting ecosystem/food web differences. Moreover, vSCCPs, SCCPs, MCCPs, and LCCPs were found to be biomagnified from black-spotted frogs to red-backed rat snakes with mean (maximum) biomagnification factors of 2.2 (3.4), 1.9 (3.7), 1.8 (2.8), and 1.7 (4.5), respectively. This is the first field study of biomagnification potential involving vSCCPs and LCCPs and highlights the need to include all CPs in studies.

Transformation of 1,1,1,3,8,10,10,10-octachlorodecane in air phase increased by phytogenic volatile organic compounds of pumpkin seedlings

Short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) are widely distributed persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Airborne chlorodecanes were hypothesized to be transformed by reactive phytogenic volatile organic compounds (PVOCs) in our previous work. To test this hypothesis, PVOCs of pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima x C. moschata) were collected and reacted with 1,1,1,3,8,10,10,10-octachlorodecane in the air phase of a sealed glass bottle under illumination for 10 days (reaction system I, simulating atmospheric reaction conditions with PVOCs). The reaction control group (reaction system II) was set at the same conditions but only had chlorodecane (without PVOCs) inside the bottle. Transformation of SCCPs in the air phase of reaction control group was unexpectedly found. Results showed that 1,1,1,3,8,10,10,10-octachlorodecane was transformed to a great extent to C₁₀Cl_5-8, C₉Cl_6-8, and C₈Cl_7-8 in the air phase after 10-d illumination in both with and without the presence of PVOCs, which is explained by carbon chain decomposition, dechlorination and chlorine rearrangement products of the parent SCCP. Those transformation processes were increased to some extent by the PVOCs from pumpkin seedlings. This study provides the first experimental data on atmospheric transformation of SCCPs and also the first evidence that plant emissions (PVOCs) can increase the transformation of SCCPs in air under light and experimental conditions. It provides new insight into the potential transformation and fate of CPs in the environment.

Early Life Stage Bioactivity Assessment of Short-Chain Chlorinated Paraffins at Environmentally Relevant Concentrations by Concentration-Dependent Transcriptomic Analysis of Zebrafish Embryos

Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs), a class of ubiquitous pollutants, are considered to be embryotoxic and teratogenic. However, little is known regarding the bioactivity and mechanisms at environmentally relevant concentrations at the embryonic period. Here, a concentration-dependent reduced transcriptomic approach was used to evaluate the environmental dose (<100 ppb) effects of nine SCCP congeners and eight commercial mixtures on zebrafish embryos at 8 hpf. After 24 h of exposure, the overall biological potency of all the SCCPs, in terms of interference with 20% of the differentially expressed genes (POD_DEG20), in zebrafish embryos ranged from 0.83 to 67.61 ppb. C₁₀H₁₄Cl₈ (POD_GO20 = 3.80 ppb) and C_10-13 51.5% Cl (POD_GO20 = 3.31 ppb) exhibited the strongest interference with biological processes compared to other SCCP homologs and mixtures, respectively. The most sensitive early molecular responses induced by SCCPs were associated with pathways of genetic damage, energy metabolite interference, and metal ion binding. Furthermore, the carbon number was positively correlated with the transcriptomic potency (POD_GO20) of SCCP congeners (with chlorine content > 60%) (p = 0.038), and the chlorine content of SCCP congeners affected the bioactivity associated with genotoxic pathways. The concentration-dependent reduced transcriptomic approach significantly improved the understanding of the ecological risk of environmental contaminants at early life stages.

The environmental distribution and toxicity of short-chain chlorinated paraffins and underlying mechanisms: Implications for further toxicological investigation

Short-chain chlorinated paraffin (SCCP) pollution has become a global threat. Much attention has been paid to their environmental occurrence and toxicity. In this review, we summarized the wide distribution of SCCPs in various environmental matrices and biota, including human beings. Toxicokinetics and the toxicities of SCCPs, including lethality, hepatotoxicity, developmental toxicity, carcinogenicity, endocrine- and metabolism-disrupting effects, and immunomodulatory effects have been considered. The mechanisms of SCCP toxicity are mainly related to oxidative stress, metabolic disturbance, endocrine disruption and binding to biomacromolecules. In the future, further studies of SCCPs should focus on searching for their novel toxicity targets, and uncovering their toxic effects using transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and mutigenerational toxicity.

Short-chain chlorinated paraffins in fish from two developed regions of China: Occurrence, influencing factors and implication for human exposure via consumption

The risk associated with human exposure to short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) via dietary intake are of great concern because of the bioaccumulation potential of SCCPs in biota and adverse effects. Fish are an important food source for human beings. However, there is a paucity of studies on human exposure to SCCPs via fish consumption. In this study, SCCPs were measured in frequently consumed river fish from the Pearl River Delta, and farmed freshwater fish and wild sea fish from the Yangtze River Delta. Lipid-normalized SCCP levels in river fish ranged from 3000 to 41,000 ng/g lipid weight (lw), with an average of 16,000 ± 12,000 ng/g lw. SCCP concentrations in farmed fish were significantly lower than those in river fish (p < 0.05), but significantly higher than those in sea fish (p < 0.05). Homologue patterns of SCCPs in river fish, farmed fish and sea fish were similar, with C_10-11Cl_6-7 SCCPs being the predominant homologues. SCCP concentrations in river fish increased significantly with increasing lipid content (p < 0.01), indicating that lipid content was a controlling factor influencing SCCP concentrations. Body length and weight also played important roles in SCCP concentrations in river fish, as SCCP concentrations decreased with the increase of body length and weight of breams, keeled mullets and tilapias. Although risk assessment implied no significant risk for human exposure to SCCPs via consuming fish collected in this study, the estimated daily intakes indicated that the consumption of sea fish was safer than farmed freshwater fish.

Effects of pollution on freshwater aquatic organisms

This paper presents the reviews of scientific papers published in 2018 issues on the effects of anthropogenic pollution on the aquatic organisms dwelling in freshwater ecosystem at global scale. The first part of the study provides the summary of relevant literature reviews followed by field and survey based studies. The second part is based on categories of different classes/sources of pollutants which affect freshwater organism. This is composed of several sections including metals and metalloids, wastewater and effluents, sediments, nutrients, pharmaceuticals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, flame retardants, persistent organic pollutants, pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs, emerging contaminants, pesticides, herbicides, and endocrine disruptors. The final part of the study highlights the reviews of published research work on new pollutants such as microplastics and engineered nanoparticles which affect the freshwater organisms. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Heavy metals concentrations should be assessed at nano-scale in aquatic environment. Air pollutants could have long-term effects on freshwater ecosystem. Future studies should focus on bioremediations of freshwater pollution.

The chlorine contents and chain lengths influence the neurobehavioral effects of commercial chlorinated paraffins on zebrafish larvae

Increasing concern has arisen regarding ubiquitous environmental distribution and potential ecological and health risks of chlorinated paraffins (CPs), especially short chain congeners. Four commercial CP products with different carbon chain lengths and chlorine contents were employed to investigate and compare the possible neurotoxic effects on zebrafish larvae at 5 days post fertilization using behavioral tests, including locomotion, path angle, and two-fish social interaction. The high-chlorinated short-chain CP-70 product resulted in the strongest effects in all three tests, while the low-chlorinated long-chain CP-42 product was on the other end of the spectrum. The consequences of the chain length of two CP-52 products could be clearly distinguished by the tests. Although exposure to the two products both caused inhibition in the locomotion test, they resulted in different kinds of effects in the path angle and interaction tests. Our results suggested, as evidenced by the sensitivity and resolution of the behavioral tests, that the influence of the chain length and chlorine content of CPs could be well characterized and that chlorine content consistently showed a more significant impact than chain length. The health threats of long-chain CPs could also not be overlooked when they contained relatively high chlorine contents.

Spatial distribution and hazard of halogenated flame retardants and polychlorinated biphenyls to common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) from a region of South China affected by electronic waste recycling

Numerous studies have reported bioaccumulation of halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in wildlife from electronic waste (e-waste) recycling sites. However, the concentrations and hazards of HFRs and PCBs in wildlife from non-e-waste sites which were not involved in any known e-waste recycling activities in the e-waste-impacted region are still unclear. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), alternative HFRs (AHFRs; including dechlorane plus, decabromodiphenyl ethane, and 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane), and PCBs were quantified in common kingfishers (Alcedo atthis) from a region affected by e-waste recycling in South China, and potential adverse effects were evaluated. Concentrations of ∑PBDEs and ∑PCBs in kingfishers ranged from 2.1 × 10³-1.3 × 10⁵ ng/g lipid mass (lm) and 2.1 × 10³-1.5 × 10⁶ ng/g lm, respectively. At e-waste recycling sites, these concentrations were 100- to 1000-fold greater than those in kingfishers from non-e-waste areas, where concentrations of ∑PBDEs and ∑PCBs were 16-1.2 × 10³ and 39-3.0 × 10³ ng/g lm, respectively. Concentrations of ∑AHFRs in kingfishers from e-waste sites and non-e-waste sites ranged from 8.5 to 3.6 × 10² and 0.8-2.9 × 10² ng/g lm, respectively. The greatest concentrations of PCBs in kingfishers were measured from the e-waste sites. Additionally, kingfishers from four non-e-waste sites in the vicinity of e-waste sites had greater PCB concentrations compared to the other six non-e-waste sites. Concentrations of AHFRs were negatively and significantly correlated with distance from an e-waste site, which indicated that AHFRs from non-e-waste sites might be influenced by point sources. Further, a significant (r² = 0.53, p = 0.02) positive correlation between human population density and concentrations of ∑PBDEs in kingfishers from non-e-waste sites was observed. Concentrations of either PBDEs or PCBs from e-waste sites might pose severe, adverse reproductive effects to kingfishers, while the potential for adverse effects of PBDEs and PCBs to kingfishers from most non-e-waste sites seemed minimal.

Shorter than short-chain: Very short-chain chlorinated paraffins (vSCCPs) found in wildlife from the Yangtze River Delta

Very short-chain chlorinated paraffins (vSCCPs, C_6-9) occurred in 94% of wildlife samples from the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), China, with C_nCl_m comparable to that of a local CP product, CP-52. Therefore, we determined the content of vSCCPs in CP-52 using a mathematical deconvolution technique. Then with CP-52 and several other reference standards, vSCCPs together with short-, medium-, and long-chain CPs were quantified in 21 wildlife species from an artificial wetland ecosystem and a freshwater ecosystem in the YRD. Concentrations of vSCCPs ranged from 2.6 to 8400 ng/g lipid. These concentrations were 1.2-380 fold lower than SCCPs, but were significantly correlated with those of SCCPs. vSCCP concentrations were comparable to or higher than reported for brominated flame retardants in the same samples. Bioaccumulation tendency of vSCCPs was identified in two benthic species, indicating congener-specific accumulation of vSCCPs in the environment.

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) in salmon sold in southern Germany: Concentrations, homologue patterns and relation to other persistent organic pollutants

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are complex mixtures of persistent contaminants present throughout the aquatic food web. In this study 122 farmed and 11 wild salmon samples were collected over the course of four years (2014-2017). The ratio of short-chain CP and medium-chain CP and the corresponding homologue patterns were determined by means of gas chromatography (GC) with high resolution, accurate mass Orbitrap mass spectrometry (MS) technology. Characteristic patterns were observed, enabling differentiation between European and non-European (Chilean) samples. Concentration ranges of short-chain CPs (0.97-170 ng/g ww) and medium-chain CPs (1.1-79 ng/g ww) were similarly widespread over three orders of magnitude. Yet, both the mean and median concentrations of MCCPs were usually higher than those of the SCCP. CP levels were generally higher than those of marker polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDDs). An age- and gender-dependent estimated intake range of 4.6-35 ng/kg bw/week for short and medium-chain CPs via the consumption of salmon was calculated for adults in Germany.

Bioaccumulation and biomagnification of short-chain chlorinated paraffins in marine organisms from the Pearl River Estuary, South China

Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) are a series of new persistent organic pollutants, posing a risk of significant adverse effects to biota. Increasing attention has been paid to SCCP pollution in China as large amounts of chlorinated paraffin (CP) products containing SCCPs have been produced and used there. However, knowledge of the bioaccumulation of SCCPs in marine organisms from the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), Southern China, is still scarce. In this study, SCCP concentrations were measured in seawater, sediments, and marine organisms from the PRE. SCCP concentrations ranged from 180 to 460 ng/L in seawater, from 180 to 620 ng/g dry weight (dw) in sediments, and from 870 to 36,000 ng/g lipid weight (lw) in marine biota samples. C_10-11 SCCPs were the predominant homologues in all the samples, with an average abundance of 68% in seawater, 57% in sediments, and 56-77% in marine organisms. However, chlorine patterns of SCCPs in seawater, sediments, and marine organisms were different. Cl_8-10 SCCPs dominated in sediments, whereas Cl_5-7 SCCPs were the predominant SCCP homologues in water and most organism species. The logarithm bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) of SCCPs ranged from 1.6 to 3.0, and increased significantly with the increase of K_ow values for most marine biota species, indicating that K_ow was the major factor controlling the bioaccumulation of SCCPs and that SCCPs with higher lipophilicity were more prone to being bioaccumulated from water. Opposite to that observed for log BAFs, biota-sediment accumulation factors of specific SCCPs (range: 0.01-30) decreased significantly with the increase of K_ow values. The biomagnification factor of total SCCPs for oyster-mangrove crab was 2.40, implying the potential biomagnification of SCCPs for benthos in the PRE.

Tissue-Specific Accumulation, Sexual Difference, and Maternal Transfer of Chlorinated Paraffins in Black-Spotted Frogs

The restriction on usage of short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) under Stockholm Convention may promote the production and application of medium chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) and long chain chlorinated paraffins (LCCPs) as substitutes. This study focused on the tissue-specific exposure to SCCPs, MCCPs, and LCCPs in black-spotted frog, a prevalent amphibian species in the Yangtze River Delta, China. The total CP concentrations in frog liver, muscle, and egg samples ranged of 35-1200, 6.3-97, and 6.8-300 ng/g wet weight (ww), respectively. Livers and eggs contained primary SCCPs (on average 78%) while MCCPs (43%) together with SCCPs (41%) were dominant in muscles. A significantly negative correlation was observed between hepatosomatic index and CPs concentration in liver ( p < 0.01), indicating that CP exposure may lower survival rates of frogs by suppressing the energy storage in liver. Additionally, maternal transfer, an important uptake pathway for CPs, was evaluated for the first time by calculating the ratios of CP levels in eggs to those in their paired liver tissues. The ratio of egg to liver for CP congener groups raised with the increasing of log K_ow values, indicating mother to egg transport of CPs was related to the lipophilicity of the chemicals.

Evidence for the widespread occurrence of short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins in fish collected from the Rhône River basin (France)

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are high-volume chemicals used in numerous industrial applications. Their quantitative analysis is extremely challenging and this work presents the optimization of an analytical method based on gas chromatography hyphenated with electron capture negative ionization time-of-flight high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC-ECNI-TOF HRMS) for the simultaneous determination of short-chain and medium-chain CPs (SCCPs and MCCPs, respectively) in fish tissues (i.e. dorsal muscle). The resolution of the TOF-MS analyzer reduced or eliminated isobaric interferences and the CP response was optimized through Design of Experiment. A simple clean-up procedure based on adsorption chromatography further removed some potentially interfering organochlorines. Good selectivity, linearity and accuracy were achieved; method detection limits or limits of reporting were compatible with expected levels in wild fish (0.03-0.35 ng g^-1 wet weight, ww, depending on the congener). This method was proven suitable for the analysis of CPs in tissues of common barbel Barbus, a fish species frequently used for water quality monitoring purposes in Europe. SCCPs and MCCPs were found to be widespread within the Rhône river basin (France). At all locations, MCCP concentrations (1.3-72.7 ng g^-1 ww) were higher than those of SCCPs (0.3-10.6 ng g^-1 ww) and levels were systematically lower than the proposed Predicted No Effect Concentrations (PNECs). Spatial variations of SCCP composition profiles largely surpassed those of MCCPs, suggesting the influence of local sources.

Photochemical degradation kinetics and mechanism of short-chain chlorinated paraffins in aqueous solution: A case of 1-chlorodecane

Short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) have attracted worldwide attention in recent years, due to their high production volume, persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic properties. In this study, 1-chlorodecane (CD) was selected as a model of SCCPs to explore its photochemical degradation behavior under UV irradiation. The results found that CD could be completely photochemical degradation within 120 min, and the ^•OH was found to be the main reactive species from both quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results. However, the contribution of triple excited state of CD (³CD*) was still nonnegligible from the results with the absorption peak at 480 nm obtained by laser flash photolysis. Based on the identified intermediates as well as the data from theoretical chemical calculation, the detailed photochemical degradation mechanism of CD was tentatively proposed that CD firstly was excited and photo-ionized under UV irradiation, and the released Cl^• in water could result in generating ^•OH. Then ^•OH initiates CD degradation mainly through the H-abstraction pathway, leading to the generation of several dehydrogenation radicals, which further generated alcohols or long chain intermediates through radical-radical reactions. The results will provide a comprehensive understanding of the degradation mechanism and environmental fates of SCCPs in water under UV irradiation.

Short-chain chlorinated paraffins in soil, sediment, and seawater in the intertidal zone of Shandong Peninsula, China: Distribution and composition

Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) are components of chlorinated paraffins (CPs) with high persistence, bioaccumulation potential, and toxicity, and SCCPs have been listed on Stockholm Convention as persistent organic pollutants. In this work, we investigated the distribution and homologue group patterns of SCCPs in the intertidal zone of the Shandong Peninsula, which is surrounded by the Bohai Sea (BS) and Yellow Sea (YS). Total SCCP concentrations (ΣSCCPs) in the samples from the sites along the coast of BS were 64.14-452.9 ng/g (mean = 181.0 ng/g), which were higher than those of the YS (17.59-155.5 ng/g, mean = 108.5 ng/g). ΣSCCPs were generally higher in intertidal sediments than in coastal soils along the BS, which could be ascribed to local industrial emissions through river runoff and mid-estuarine maximum phenomenon that resulted from seawater intrusion. In contrast, the opposite trend was observed along the YS. The contribution of shorter chain (C₁₀) and lower chlorinated (Cl_5-7) SCCP congeners was higher when the sampling sites were more proximal to the sea than heavier ones because of their greater potential for long-range transportation. Similar homologue group patterns were observed in the intertidal zone of Shandong, thus indicating a uniform use of commercial CP mixtures. High SCCP concentrations and similar homologue group patterns as those of the STP effluent were observed in seawater samples, thus suggesting that massive insufficiently purified or nonpurified industrial effluents were discharged into the BS.

Occurrence, sources, partitioning and ecological risk of short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins in river water and sediments in Shanghai

The characteristics of regional environmental pollution of short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs and MCCPs) in river system from Shanghai were comprehensively investigated in this study for the first time. The total concentrations of SCCPs and MCCPs ranged from 15.0 to 1640 ng L^-1 (median: 278 ng L^-1) and 40.3 to 3870 ng L^-1 (median: 939 ng L^-1) in water, and from not detected (ND) to 2020 ng g^-1 (median: 89.3 ng g^-1) and 10.1 to 10,800 ng g^-1 (median: 947 ng g^-1) in sediments, respectively. The higher levels of SCCPs and MCCPs were found in water from Jinhui and Yexie rivers, and in sediments from Huangpu River, respectively. The concentrations of MCCPs were higher than those of SCCPs in both water and sediments, suggesting that the river system was mainly contaminated by MCCPs. Compared with other areas around the world, the concentrations of SCCPs and MCCPs were at medium to high levels in water and sediments. Factor analysis results revealed that SCCPs and MCCPs had different sources in both water and sediments. The log K_oc values of CPs were significantly correlated with carbon chain lengths (p < 0.01), but not with chlorine number for both SCCPs and MCCPs (p > 0.05). A significant second-order polynomial relationship was observed between log K_oc values and molecular weights of homologue groups of SCCPs (p < 0.001) and MCCPs (p < 0.01), respectively. SCCPs in water posed a low ecological risk at all sampling sites, and MCCPs in water posed a moderate ecological risk to aquatic life at nearly a fifth of sampling sites. SCCPs and MCCPs in sediments posed a low ecological risk to sediment dwelling organisms at most sampling sites.

Concentrations and congener group profiles of short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins in animal feed materials

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are ubiquitous environmental pollutants that are lipophilic and can accumulate in the food chain. Animal-derived products are predominant contributors to human CP exposure. CPs in animal feed might accumulate in domestic animals through dietary exposure, leading to potential contamination of animal-derived food products and human health risks. However, information on the presence of CPs in animal feed materials is scarce. In this study, 16 animal feed material samples were collected in China in 2016. Thirteen of the samples were of animal origin and three were of plant origin. The concentrations and carbon and chlorine congener group profiles of shortchain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) in these animal feed materials were investigated. The concentrations of SCCPs were higher than those of MCCPs in all of the samples. The SCCP concentration range was 120 to 1700 ng/g (mean 640 ng/g), and the MCCP concentration range was 6.4 to 260 ng/g (mean 78 ng/g). Fish meal had the highest SCCP and MCCP concentrations. The lowest SCCP and MCCP concentrations were detected in peanut meal and whey powder, respectively. The concentrations of SCCPs and MCCPs varied among the types of animal feed materials. SCCP and MCCP concentrations also varied among samples of the same type of animal feed material. Relatively high concentrations of SCCPs and MCCPs were detected in feed materials of animal origin. The predominant congener groups in the animal feed materials were C10-11Cl6-7 for SCCPs and C14Cl7 for MCCPs. The carbon and chlorine congener group profiles of SCCPs indicated that SCCP contamination in the animal feed materials might arise from commercial CP mixtures.

Validation of a HRGC-ECNI/LRMS method to monitor short-chain chlorinated paraffins in human plasma

Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) are produced in high volume and have the high potential to pose a threat to human health. However, little information is available for SCCP contamination in human blood/plasma/serum, mainly due to the difficulty of sample preparation and quantitative analysis. A method using high resolution gas chromatography coupled with electron capture negative ionization low resolution mass spectrometry (HRGC-ECNI/LRMS) was developed and validated to measure SCCPs in human plasma. The pretreatment process included protein denaturation and lipid elimination, liquid-liquid extraction with a mixture of n-hexane/dichloromethane (1:1, V/V), and cleanup on a multi-layer silica column. The blank controls, including procedural blank, vacuum blood collection tube blank, and instrumental blank, were the most pivotal points for the reliable analysis of SCCPs. The average value of procedural blanks was 9.0ng/g; and the method detection limit (MDL), calculated as the sum of the average procedural blank value and 3 times of the standard deviation of the procedural blanks, was 12.6ng/g plasma. The validated method was applied to measure the concentrations of the total SCCPs (∑SCCPs) in 50 plasma samples from a general population. The measured plasma concentrations of ∑SCCPs ranged from <MDL to 203ng/g wet weight (ww), with an average value of 32.0ng/g ww. The relative abundance profiles of SCCPs in plasma samples were dominated by C₁₀- and C₁₁-CP congener groups centered on Cl_6-7. The developed method can be used for the comprehensive and large-scale investigation of SCCP levels in human plasma.

Combined Effects of Dust and Dietary Exposure of Occupational Workers and Local Residents to Short- and Medium-Chain Chlorinated Paraffins in a Mega E-Waste Recycling Industrial Park in South China

Four types of dust samples and nine categories of locally produced staple foods were collected from a mega e-waste recycling industrial park and its surrounding regions, and simultaneously analyzed for short-chain and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (CPs) to estimate dust and dietary exposure and their combined effects on occupational workers and local residents. All samples related to e-waste activities contained considerably high concentrations of CPs. The highest dust concentration was found in e-waste workshops. CPs were highly accumulated in local plant and animal origin foods, most markedly in fish, vegetables, and rice. The main contribution to CP intake under a median exposure scenario was from the diet, and vegetables, fish, and rice were the three largest dietary intake sources. Only the combined dust and food exposure from the present study has approached or even exceeded the highest tolerable daily intake (TDI) set up by the International Program on Chemical Safety (IPCS). However, due to lack of official threshold values for CP exposure on adverse human health, there are limitations on accurate risk assessment. Considering the presence of other exposure pathways, CPs' endocrine disrupter properties, as well as the multicomponent chemical "cocktails" effects, potential high risks from CP exposure may be posed to e-waste workers and local residents.
