Bioaccumulation and biomagnification of emerging poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances in marine organisms

Characterization of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in Chinese river and lake sediments

Sediment pollution by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) is an emerging environmental concern with far-reaching implications, attracting considerable public, scientific and regulatory attention. This study analyzed 72 articles published since 2010 to assess the accumulation, sources, spatiotemporal trends, and contributing factors of PFAS pollution in surface sediments across China. The total concentrations of PFASs at the reviewed sites ranged from 0.001 to 10700 ng/g, with the maximum concentration detected in the Xiaoqing River, Shandong province. Excluding the Xiaoqing River, the mean total PFAS concentrations at other sites were below 200 ng/g. Although long-chain PFASs have been frequently associated with sediment phases due to their hydrophobicity, short-chain legacy and emerging PFASs also exhibited high concentrations, often being the dominant analytes at several sites because of their significant partition coefficients in sediments of China. Fluorochemical industries were identified as the most significant contributors to sediment PFAS accumulation, with concentrations up to ten times higher than those in areas affected by other sources. Risk assessments revealed differing outcomes based on chronic and acute toxicological data. Acute data indicated high ecological risks to aquatic organisms-including daphnids, green algae, mysids, and fish-from long-chain PFCAs and PFOS exposure at up to 19 sites. In contrast, chronic data derived from SSD for PFOS and PFOA, considering the maximum concentrations found across sites, suggested high chronic risks at only 1 and 4 sites, respectively. These findings, combined with the widespread occurrence of fluorochemical industries and the adsorption and bioaccumulative behavior of legacy and emerging PFASs in sediments, underscore the need for expanded assessments in underrepresented regions of China to comprehensively evaluate ecological and human health risks.

Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) and their precursors in sediments and adjacent riparian soils from the Three Gorges Reservoir, China: Contamination characteristics, source apportionment and ecological risks

Information on the occurrence and spatial distribution of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) and their precursors in sediments and adjacent riparian soils of Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), which is one of the largest reservoirs in the world, is still limited. In this study, The total concentrations of these per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) ranged from 2220 to 19,300 pg/g in sediments and 298-9540 pg/g in soils. PFOA was the dominant PFAS in sediments and soils, accounting for 23.4% and 30.7% of the total median cocentrations of PFASs, respectively. PFAA precursors, such as 4:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (4:2 FTS), 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FTS), and perfluorooctane sulfonamide (FOSA), were widely detected in sediments and soils. The distribution of PFASs exhibited distinct spatial variations and was more influenced by anthropogenic activities. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) identified fire-fighting foams (AFFF) and legacy fluoropolymer industry/textile treatment were the dominant sources in sediments (31.5%) and soils (30.8%), respectively. Finally, the ecological risk assessment showed that PFOS exhibited low to medium risks. Our findings indicate that the contamination of PFAA precursors must be considered when developing management measures to protect the TGR region.

PFC/PFAS concentrations in human milk and infant exposure through lactation: a comprehensive review of the scientific literature

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), previously known as perfluorinated compounds (PFC), are a group of synthetic chemicals widely used over the past decades. Their extensive application, combined with their environmental persistence, has contributed to their ubiquitous presence in the environment and the associated toxicological risks. Regarding humans, blood serum testing remains the primary method for biomonitoring PFAS exposure, while breast milk has also been used due to the transfer of these substances from mothers to infants during lactation. This paper aims to review the scientific literature (using PubMed and Scopus databases) on PFAS concentrations in the breast milk of non-occupationally exposed women. Where available, the estimated daily intake of these compounds by breastfeeding infants is also examined. The reviewed studies are categorized by continent and country/region, revealing a significant lack of data for many countries, including both developed and developing nations. The findings indicate substantial variability in PFAS concentrations, influenced by factors such as geographic location, sampling year, and the specific PFAS analyzed. Among the identified compounds, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are most commonly detected, along with perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS) and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), being the only PFAS with regulated maximum levels in certain foodstuffs. Most studies were conducted before the implementation of the current (updated) tolerable weekly intake (TWI) values for these substances. Consequently, the majority reported a low health risk for breastfeeding infants, even in high-intake scenarios. Nevertheless, biomonitoring studies are urgently needed in countries with limited or no data, and new investigations should assess whether current estimated intakes exceed the updated TWI. Special focus should be given to rural and industrial areas where exposure levels remain poorly understood.

Bioaccumulation potentials of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in recreational fisheries: Occurrence, health risk assessment and oxidative stress biomarkers in coastal Biscayne Bay

Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of synthetic, highly fluorinated, and emerging chemicals that are reported to be used for both industrial and domestic applications. Several PFAS have demonstrated persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic tendencies in marine organisms. Therefore, this research aims to characterize and quantify these compounds in both recreational fisheries and surface water samples, including estimating their bioaccumulation potentials. In addition, we assessed the potential contribution of biomonitoring tools such as oxidative stressors and morphological index on fish and ecological health. Finally, human health risk assessment was performed based on available toxicological data on limited PFAS. All PFAS were detected in at least one sample except for N-EtFOSAA in lobster which was below the method detection limit. ƩPFAS body burden ranged from 0.15 to 3.40 ng/g wet weight (ww) in blackfin tuna samples and 0.37-5.15 ng/g ww in lobster samples, respectively. Wilcoxon rank paired test (α = 0.05) shows that there is statistical significance (ρ < 0.05) of ƩPFAS between species. Bioaccumulation factors (BAF) suggest an increasing trend in PFAS classes (PFCAs < PFSAs < FTSs), with higher BAFs observed in tuna compared to lobster. Long-chain PFESAs and FASAA were reported at higher concentrations in lobster compared to Blackfin tuna due to their bioavailability through sediment-sorption interactions. Although Fulton's condition factor (FCF) indicates healthy fish conditions, oxidative stress biomarkers suggest that tuna and lobster might be under stress, which can weaken their immune system against exposure to emerging contaminants such as PFAS. Hazard risk (HR) suggests a low risk to human health based on the consumption of the studied species; however, the risk of contaminant exposure may be higher than estimated. This study is aimed at improving food safety by providing better understanding of how PFAS infiltrate into human diet and incorporating data on influence of contaminant exposure and environmental stressors on marine health.

Effect of physicochemical parameters on the occurrence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in aquatic environment

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and their distribution in aquatic environments have been studied extensively, but more information is needed to link these occurrences to their physicochemical characteristics. Understanding how these parameters influence PFAS can help predict their fate, mobility, and occurrences in water. This study reviewed the influence of physicochemical parameters on the occurrences of PFAS in aquatic environment using the relevant keywords to retrieve articles from databases spanning mostly between 2017 and 2024. The result suggests that high pH, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen, give high concentration of PFAS, while high electrical conductivity, temperature and salinity give low PFAS concentration in the water. Therefore, monitoring and safeguarding the aquatic bodies for human and environmental safety is imperative. Future studies should include the effects of the physicochemical properties on PFAS occurrences in the natural environment and focus on an organism's distinctive characteristics to comprehend the bioaccumulation and biomagnification of PFAS in them and environmental matrices.

Advances in perfluoro-alkylated compounds (PFAS) detection in seafood and marine environments: A comprehensive review on analytical techniques and global regulations

Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent organic pollutants that severely threaten the environment and human health due to their distinct chemical composition, extensive production, widespread distribution, bioaccumulation in nature, and long-term persistence. This review focuses on the occurrence and sources of PFAS in seafood, with a particular emphasis on advanced detection methods viz. nanoparticle-based, biosensor-based, and metal-organic frameworks-based, and mass spectrometric techniques. The challenges associated with these advanced detection technologies are also discussed. Recent research and regulatory updates about PFAS, including hazardous and potential health effects, epidemiological studies, and various risk assessment models, have been reviewed. In addition, the need for global monitoring programs and regulations on PFAS are critically reviewed by underscoring their crucial role in protecting human health and the environment. Further, approaches for reducing PFAS in seafood are highlighted with future innovative remediation directions. Although advanced PFAS analytical methods are available, selectivity, sample preparation, and sensitivity are still significant challenges associated with detection of PFAS in seafood matrices.  Moreover, crucial research gaps and solutions to essential concerns are critically explored in this review.

Spatial distribution, trophic magnification, and risk assessment of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in Yangtze finless porpoise (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis asiaeorientalis): Risks of emerging alternatives

The Yangtze finless porpoise (YFP, Neophocaena asiaeorientalis asiaeorientalis) is the only freshwater cetacean found in China. However, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) risks in YFPs remain unclear. In this study, legacy PFASs, their precursors and alternatives, were determined in YFP muscles (n = 32), liver (n = 29), kidney (n = 24), skin (n = 5), and blubbers (n = 25) collected from Poyang Lake (PL) and Yangtze River (YR) between 2017 and 2023. Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) was the predominant PFAS in all YFP tissues, with a median hepatic concentration of 1700 ng/g wet weight, which is higher than that in other finless porpoises worldwide. PFOS, chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonates (Cl-PFESAs), and perfluoroalkane sulfonamides concentrations in YFP livers from PL were significantly higher than those from YR (p < 0.05); however, the opposite was observed for hexafluoropropylene oxide acids. Biomagnification and trophic magnification factors (BMF and TMF, respectively) of most PFASs in the YFP food web were > 1. Perfluoroheptane sulfonic acid had the highest BMF value (99), followed by 6:2 Cl-PFESA (94) and PFOS (81). The TMFmuscle and TMFliver values of the total PFASs were 3.4 and 6.6, respectively, and were significantly positively correlated with the fluorinated carbon chain length (p < 0.01). In addition, up to 62 % of the hazard quotients for 6:2 Cl-PFESA were > 1, which was higher than that of PFOS (48 %), suggesting a high hepatotoxicity of 6:2 Cl-PFESA to YFPs. Bioaccumulation and biotoxicity of legacy and emerging alternatives in aquatic organisms continue to be a concern, especially for underscoring the vulnerability of the long-lived and endangered species.

Fluorescence Turn-on Detection of Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) by Perylene Diimide-Based Metal-Organic Framework

A novel, water-stable, perylene diimide (PDI) based metal-organic framework (MOF), namely, U-1, has been synthesized for selective and sensitive detection of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in mixed aqueous solutions. The MOF shows highly selective fluorescence turn-on detection via the formation of a PFOA-MOF complex. This PFOA-MOF complex formation was confirmed by various spectroscopic techniques. The detection limit of the MOF for PFOA was found to be 1.68 μM in an aqueous suspension. Upon coating onto cellulose paper, the MOF demonstrated a significantly lower detection limit, down to 3.1 nM, which is mainly due to the concentrative effect of solid phase extraction (SPE). This detection limit is lower than the fluorescence sensors based on MOFs previously reported for PFAS detection. The MOF sensor is regenerable and capable of detecting PFOA in drinking and tap water samples. The PDI-MOF-based sensor reported herein represents a novel approach, relying on fluorescence turn-on response, that has not yet been thoroughly investigated for detecting per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) until now.

Occurrence, bioaccumulation, fate, and risk assessment of emerging pollutants in aquatic environments: A review

Significant concerns on a global scale have been raised in response to the potential adverse impacts of emerging pollutants (EPs) on aquatic creatures. We have carefully reviewed relevant research over the past 10 years. The study focuses on five typical EPs: pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), drinking water disinfection byproducts (DBPs), brominated flame retardants (BFRs), and microplastics (MPs). The presence of EPs in the global aquatic environment is source-dependent, with wastewater treatment plants being the main source of EPs. Multiple studies have consistently shown that the final destination of most EPs in the water environment is sludge and sediment. Simultaneously, a number of EPs, such as PFASs, MPs, and BFRs, have long-term environmental transport potential. Some EPs exhibit notable tendencies towards bioaccumulation and biomagnification, while others pose challenges in terms of their degradation within both biological and abiotic treatment processes. The results showed that, in most cases, the ecological risk of EPs in aquatic environments was low, possibly due to potential dilution and degradation. Future research topics should include adding EPs detection items for the aquatic environment, combining pollution, and updating prediction models.

Environmental occurrence, bioaccumulation and human risks of emerging fluoroalkylether substances: Insight into security of alternatives

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are widely used due to their unique structure and excellent performance, while also posing threats on ecosystem, especially long-chain perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). As the control of conventional PFASs, fluoroalkylether substances (ether-PFASs) as alternatives are constantly emerging. Subsequently, the three representative ether-PFASs, chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonic acid (F-53B), hexafluoropropylene oxide-dimer acid (HFPO-DA), and 4,8-Dioxa-3H-perfluorononanoicacid (ADONA) are discovered and have received more attention in the environment and ecosystem. But their security is now also being challenged. This review systematically assesses their security from six dimensions including environmental occurrence in water, soil and atmosphere, as well as bioaccumulation and risk in plants, animals and humans. High substitution level is observed for F-53B, whether in environment or living things. Like PFOS or even more extreme, F-53B exhibits high biomagnification ability, transmission efficiency from maternal to infant, and various biological toxicity effects. HFPO-DA still has a relatively low substitution level for PFOA, but its use has emerged in Europe. Although it is less detected in human bodies and has a higher metabolic rate than PFOA, the strong migration ability of HFPO-DA in plants may pose dietary safety concerns for humans. Research on ADONA is limited, and currently, it is detected in Germany frequently while remaining at trace levels globally. Evidently, F-53B has shown increasing risk both in occurrence and toxicity compared to PFOS, and HFPO-DA is relatively safe based on available data. There are still knowledge gaps on security of alternatives that need to be addressed.

Dietary exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances: Potential health impacts on human liver

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), dubbed "forever chemicals", are widely present in the environment. Environmental contamination and food contact substances are the main sources of PFAS in food, increasing the risk of human dietary exposure. Numerous epidemiological studies have established the link between dietary exposure to PFAS and liver disease. Correspondingly, PFAS induced-hepatotoxicity (e.g., hepatomegaly, cell viability, inflammation, oxidative stress, bile acid metabolism dysregulation and glycolipid metabolism disorder) observed from in vitro models and in vivo rodent studies have been extensively reported. In this review, the pertinent literature of the last 5 years from the Web of Science database was researched. This study summarized the source and fate of PFAS, and reviewed the occurrence of PFAS in food system (natural and processed food). Subsequently, the characteristics of human dietary exposure PFAS (population characteristics, distribution trend, absorption and distribution) were mentioned. Additionally, epidemiologic evidence linking PFAS exposure and liver disease was alluded, and the PFAS-induced hepatotoxicity observed from in vitro models and in vivo rodent studies was comprehensively reviewed. Lastly, we highlighted several critical knowledge gaps and proposed future research directions. This review aims to raise public awareness about food PFAS contamination and its potential risks to human liver health.

Legacy per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) especially alternative PFASs in shellfish from Shandong Province, China: Distribution, sources, and health risk

We investigated the distribution of 8 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in 321 shellfish samples collected from four coastal cities along the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea of Shandong Province, China. The concentrations of total PFASs (∑PFASs) were in the range of 0.061-178.259 ng/g wet weight (ww). Two legacy long-chain compounds were dominant. Three emerging compounds and two short-chain alternatives were also observed with higher concentration and detection frequency than in previous studies, whereas 4, 8-dioxa-3H-perfluorononanoate acid (ADONA) was not detected. There were differences in concentrations and composition profiles of PFASs among different species, as well as among different sampling cities. According to scores of principal component analysis, metal plating plants, textile treatments, and fluoropolymer products were considered as the main sources of PFAS contamination in shellfish. Furthermore, a potential health risk of perfluorooctanoic acid should be highly considered for local residents that frequently consume crabs and molluscs.

Bioaccumulation, tissue distribution, and maternal transfer of novel PFOS alternatives (6:2 Cl-PFESA and OBS) in wild freshwater fish from Poyang Lake, China

As emerging alternatives to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), 6:2 chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonic acid (6:2 Cl-PFESA) and sodium p-perfluorous nonenox-benzenesulfonate (OBS) were frequently detected in the four freshwater fish species collected from Poyang Lake. Median concentrations of 6:2 Cl-PFESA and OBS in fish tissues were 0.046-6.0 and 0.46-5.1 ng/g wet weight, respectively. The highest concentrations of 6:2 Cl-PFESA was found in fish livers, whereas OBS was found in the pancreas, brain, gonads, and skin. The tissue distribution pattern of 6:2 Cl-PFESA is similar to that of PFOS. The tissue/liver ratios of OBS were higher than those of PFOS, suggesting that OBS has a greater tendency to transfer from the liver to other tissues. The logarithmic bioaccumulation factors (log BAFs) of 6:2 Cl-PFESA in three carnivorous fish species were greater than 3.7, whereas those of OBS were less than 3.7, indicating that 6:2 Cl-PFESA had a strong bioaccumulation potential. Notably, sex- and tissue-specific bioaccumulation of OBS has also been observed in catfish. Most tissues (except the gonads) exhibited higher OBS concentrations in males than in females. However, no differences were found for 6:2 Cl-PFESA and PFOS. Maternal transfer efficiency of OBS was higher than that of 6:2 Cl-PFESA and PFOS in catfish (p < 0.05), indicating that OBS presents a higher risk of exposure to males and offspring through maternal offloading.

Legacy and novel perfluoroalkyl substances in major economic species of invertebrates in South China Sea: Health implication from consumption

Continuously release of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) would pose non-negligible impacts on environment, organisms, and human health. In present study, 18 PFASs in 7 typical economic invertebrates and their habitats were investigated from the South China Sea. The higher concentrations of PFASs in the nearshore water (6.61-15.54 ng/L) and sediment (0.82-8.84 ng/g) obviously due to frequent human activities. Long-chain PFASs have tendency to accumulate in sediment, however, short-chain PFASs dominated in biota. The acute reference dose (%ARfD) and hazard ratios (HR) of major PFASs in biota were all <100 %, and also below 1, respectively, which means that consumption of PFASs from seafood does not pose risk and threat to human health. However, it should be taken into account that the HR of PFHxA in Mimachlamys nobilis reached 0.82. Potential adverse effects toward human health induced by short-chain PFASs (such as <6 C) via invertebrate seafood consumption should be concerned.

Emerging poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances in water and sediment from Qiantang River-Hangzhou Bay

Many emerging poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are being used in China, due to the gradual phase out of legacy PFASs. Occurrence and environmental behaviors of emerging PFASs in Chinese fresh water environment are still not well known. In this study, 31 PFASs, including 14 emerging PFASs, were measured in 29 pairs of water and sediment samples from Qiantang River-Hangzhou Bay, an important drinking water resource for cities in Yangtze River basin. Perfluorooctanoate was consistently the predominant legacy PFAS in water (8.8-130 ng/L) and sediment (3.7-49 ng/g dw). Twelve emerging PFASs were detected in water, with the dominance of 6:2 chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonates (6:2 Cl-PFAES; mean 11 ng/L, 0.79-57 ng/L) and 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FTS; 5.6 ng/L, < LOD-29 ng/L). Eleven emerging PFASs were found in sediment, and were also dominated by 6:2 Cl-PFAES (mean 4.3 ng/g dw, 0.19-16 ng/g dw) and 6:2 FTS (2.6 ng/g dw, < LOD-9.4 ng/g dw). Spatially, sampling sites closed to the surrounding cities had comparatively higher water concentrations of PFASs. Among emerging PFASs, 8:2 Cl-PFAES (3.0 ± 0.34) had the highest mean field-based log-transformed organic‑carbon normalized sediment-water partition coefficient (log K_oc), followed by 6:2 Cl-PFAES (2.9 ± 0.35) and hexafluoropropylene oxide trimer acid (2.8 ± 0.32). p-perfluorous nonenoxybenzene sulfonate (2.3 ± 0.60) and 6:2 FTS (1.9 ± 0.54) had relatively lower mean log K_oc values. To our knowledge, this is the most comprehensive study investigating the occurrence and partitioning behaviors of emerging PFASs in Qiantang River.

Roles of various enzymes in the biotransformation of 6:2 fluorotelomer alcohol (6:2 FTOH) by a white-rot fungus

Six-carbon-chained polyfluoroalkyl substances, such as 6:2 fluorotelomer alcohol (6:2 FTOH), are being used to replace longer chained compounds in the manufacture of various commercial products. This study examined the effects of growth substrates and nutrients on specific intracellular and extracellular enzymes mediating 6:2 FTOH aerobic biotransformation by the white-rot fungus, Phanerochaete chrysosporium. Cellulolytic conditions with limited glucose were a suitable composition, resulting in high 5:3 FTCA yield (37 mol%), which is a key intermediate in 6:2 FTOH degradation without forming significant amounts of terminal perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs). Sulfate and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) were also essential for 5:3 FTCA production, but, at lower levels, resulted in the buildup of 5:2 sFTOH (52 mol%) and 6:2 FTUCA (20 mol%), respectively. In non-ligninolytic nutrient-rich medium, 45 mol% 6:2 FTOH was transformed but produced only 12.7 mol% 5:3 FTCA. Enzyme activity studies imply that cellulolytic conditions induce the intracellular cytochrome P450 system. In contrast, extracellular peroxidase synthesis is independent of 6:2 FTOH exposure. Gene expression studies further verified that peroxidases were relevant in catalyzing the downstream transformations from 5:3 FTCA. Collectively, the identification of nutrients and enzymatic systems will help elucidate underlying mechanisms and biogeochemical conditions favorable for fungal transformation of PFCA precursors in the environment.

The novel polyfluoroalkyl benzenesulfonate OBS exposure induces cell cycle arrest and senescence of rat pituitary cell GH3 via the p53/p21/RB pathway

Sodium p-perfluorous nonenoxybenzene sulfonate (OBS), an economical alternative to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in multiple industrial fields, is widely detected in the environment. The toxicity of OBS has received increasing attention. Pituitary cells are components of the endocrine system and act as vital regulators of homeostatic endocrine balance. However, the effects of OBS on pituitary cells remain unknown. The present study explores the effects of OBS (0.5, 5, and 50 μM) on GH3 rat pituitary cells after treatment for 24, 48, and 72 h. We found that OBS significantly inhibited cell proliferation in GH3 cells with remarkable senescent phenotypes, including enhanced SA-β-gal activity and expression of senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP)-related genes, cell cycle arrest, and upregulation of the senescence-related proteins γ-H2A.X and Bcl-2. OBS caused significant cell cycle arrest of GH3 cells at the G1-phase and concomitantly downregulated the expression of some key proteins for the G1/S transition, including cyclin D1 and cyclin E1. Consistently, the phosphorylation of retinoblastoma (RB), which plays a central role in regulating the cell cycle, was prominently reduced after OBS exposure. Furthermore, OBS notably activated the p53-p21 signalling pathway in GH3 cells, as evidenced by increased p53 and p21 expressions, enhanced p53 phosphorylation, and augmented p53 nuclear import. To our knowledge, this study is the first to reveal that OBS triggers senescence in pituitary cells via the p53-p21-RB signalling pathway. Our study demonstrates a novel toxic effect of OBS in vitro, and provides new perspectives for understanding the potential toxicity of OBS.
