Phytotoxicity and genotoxicity study of reactive red 141 dye on mung bean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek) seedlings

BACKGROUND

Reactive Red (RR) 141 dye is widely used in various industrial applications, but its environmental impact remains a growing concern. In this study, the phytotoxic and genotoxic effects of RR 141 dye on mung bean seedlings (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek) were investigated, serving as a model for potential harm to plant systems.

METHODS AND RESULTS

Short-term (14 days) and long-term (60 days) experiments in paddy soil pot culture exposed mung bean seedlings to RR 141 dye. The dye delayed germination and hindered growth, significantly reducing germination percentage and seedling vigor index (SVI) at concentrations of 50 and 100 ml/L. In short-term exposure, plumule and radical lengths dose-dependently decreased, while long-term exposure affected plant length and grain weight, leaving pod-related parameters unaffected. To evaluate genotoxicity, high annealing temperature-random amplified polymorphic DNA (HAT-RAPD) analysis was employed with five RAPD primers having 58-75% GC content. It detected polymorphic band patterns, generating 116 bands (433 to 2857 bp) in plant leaves exposed to the dye. Polymorphisms indicated the appearance/disappearance of DNA bands in both concentrations, with decreased genomic template stability (GTS) values suggesting DNA damage and mutation.

CONCLUSION

These findings demonstrate that RR 141 dye has a significant impact on genomic template stability (GTS) and exhibits phytotoxic and genotoxic responses in mung bean seedlings. This research underscores the potential of RR 141 dye to act as a harmful agent within plant model systems, highlighting the need for further assessment of its environmental implications.

A review on existing and emerging approaches for textile wastewater treatments: challenges and future perspectives

This comprehensive review explores the complex environment of textile wastewater treatment technologies, highlighting both well-established and emerging techniques. Textile wastewater poses a significant environmental challenge, containing diverse contaminants and chemicals. The review presents a detailed examination of conventional treatments such as coagulation, flocculation, and biological processes, highlighting their effectiveness and limitations. In textile industry, various textile operations such as sizing, de-sizing, dyeing, bleaching, and mercerization consume large quantities of water generating effluent high in color, chemical oxygen demand, and solids. The dyes, mordants, and variety of other chemicals used in textile processing lead to effluent variable in characteristics. Furthermore, it explores innovative and emerging techniques, including advanced oxidation processes, membrane filtration, and nanotechnology-based solutions. Future perspectives in textile wastewater treatment are discussed in-depth, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary research, technological advancements, and the integration of circular economy principles. Numerous dyes used in the textile industry have been shown to have mutagenic, cytotoxic, and ecotoxic potential in studies. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the methods used to remediate textile waste water. Major topics including the chemical composition of textile waste water, the chemistry of the dye molecules, the selection of a treatment technique, the benefits and drawbacks of the various treatment options, and the cost of operation are also addressed. Overall, this review offers a valuable resource for researchers and industry professionals working in the textile industry, pointing towards a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future.

Phytoremediative adsorption methodologies to decontaminate water from dyes and organic pollutants

Persistent organic pollutants and dyes cause major problems during ecofriendly wastewater treatment. To overcome this huge problem, several techniques have been considered and in practice for the safe disposal of organic pollutants in recent years; some of them are discussed and compared herein. This review focuses on new trends for wastewater treatment and compares them with certain other techniques alongside their pros and cons; adsorption is considered the safest among them. Adsorbents derived from agri-wastes have good capacity for the removal of these contaminants owing to their great sorption capacity, high reusability, easy operation, etc. Sometimes they need some modifications for the removal of dyes, which are also discussed in this review. This capacity of adsorbents to chelate dye molecules can be affected by factors, such as pH, the concentration of dyes and adsorbents, and temperature of the system. pH has direct influence on the ionization potential and charge on the outer surface of adsorbents. The findings on isotherms, kinetics, and desorption of plant waste-based biomaterials that are safe for the ecosystem and user friendly and are used for hazardous contaminant removal from water are summarized in this review. Finally, conclusions and future perspectives are presented, and some other materials, such as CNTs and MOFs, are also discussed as efficient adsorbents for eliminating dyes from wastewater. Finally, it is predicted that the adsorption of dyes is a more feasible solution for this dye pollution problem.

Renaissance of elemental phosphorus materials: properties, synthesis, and applications in sustainable energy and environment

The polymorphism of phosphorus-based materials has garnered much research interest, and the variable chemical bonding structures give rise to a variety of micro and nanostructures. Among the different types of materials containing phosphorus, elemental phosphorus materials (EPMs) constitute the foundation for the synthesis of related compounds. EPMs are experiencing a renaissance in the post-graphene era, thanks to recent advancements in the scaling-down of black phosphorus, amorphous red phosphorus, violet phosphorus, and fibrous phosphorus and consequently, diverse classes of low-dimensional sheets, ribbons, and dots of EPMs with intriguing properties have been produced. The nanostructured EPMs featuring tunable bandgaps, moderate carrier mobility, and excellent optical absorption have shown great potential in energy conversion, energy storage, and environmental remediation. It is thus important to have a good understanding of the differences and interrelationships among diverse EPMs, their intrinsic physical and chemical properties, the synthesis of specific structures, and the selection of suitable nanostructures of EPMs for particular applications. In this comprehensive review, we aim to provide an in-depth analysis and discussion of the fundamental physicochemical properties, synthesis, and applications of EPMs in the areas of energy conversion, energy storage, and environmental remediation. Our evaluations are based on recent literature on well-established phosphorus allotropes and theoretical predictions of new EPMs. The objective of this review is to enhance our comprehension of the characteristics of EPMs, keep abreast of recent advances, and provide guidance for future research of EPMs in the fields of chemistry and materials science.

Toxic effects of Arianor Ebony hair dye on human cells

To evaluate the risks of hair dye exposure, we investigated cellular and molecular effects of Arianor Ebony dye, which is a mixture of azo and anthraquinone dyes, used in the composition of the black color. Cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, and gene expression of relevant molecules of apoptotic and oxidative stress mechanisms were investigated in HepG2 cells exposed to Arianor Ebony. Results showed that the dye did not induce cytotoxicity to exposed cells at a concentration up to 50 µg/mL compared to the negative control. However, genotoxic assays indicated that the dye was able to damage the genetic material at a concentration of 25 µg/mL, with induction factor values of exposed cells two- to five-fold higher than those recorded for the negative control. Moreover, the lowest observed effect concentration was 12.5 µg/mL. For gene expression, relevant changes were observed in cytochrome c and caspase 9, which decreased in cells incubated with the dye in a dose-dependent manner when compared with the negative control. In parallel, the expression of genes for antioxidant enzymes was increased in exposed cells, suggesting the presence of metabolic routes that protect cells against the toxic effect of the dye, avoiding exacerbated cellular death. Results suggested that the dye disrupted cellular homeostasis through mitochondrial dysfunction, which may be hazardous to human health. Thus, further investigations are necessary to deeply understand the mechanisms of action of the dye, considering its toxic potential found in our ex vivo assays.

Antiplasmodial, Trypanocidal, and Genotoxicity In Vitro Assessment of New Hybrid α,α-Difluorophenylacetamide-statin Derivatives

BACKGROUND

Statins present a plethora of pleiotropic effects including anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial responses. A,α-difluorophenylacetamides, analogs of diclofenac, are potent pre-clinical anti-inflammatory non-steroidal drugs. Molecular hybridization based on the combination of pharmacophoric moieties has emerged as a strategy for the development of new candidates aiming to obtain multitarget ligands.

METHODS

Considering the anti-inflammatory activity of phenylacetamides and the potential microbicidal action of statins against obligate intracellular parasites, the objective of this work was to synthesize eight new hybrid compounds of α,α-difluorophenylacetamides with the moiety of statins and assess their phenotypic activity against in vitro models of Plasmodium falciparum and Trypanosoma cruzi infection besides exploring their genotoxicity safety profile.

RESULTS

None of the sodium salt compounds presented antiparasitic activity and two acetated compounds displayed mild anti-P. falciparum effect. Against T. cruzi, the acetate halogenated hybrids showed moderate effect against both parasite forms relevant for human infection. Despite the considerable trypanosomicidal activity, the brominated compound revealed a genotoxic profile impairing future in vivo testing.

CONCLUSIONS

However, the chlorinated derivative was the most promising compound with chemical and biological profitable characteristics, without presenting genotoxicity in vitro, being eligible for further in vivo experiments.

Impact of textile dyes on health and ecosystem: a review of structure, causes, and potential solutions

The rapid growth of population and industrialization have intensified the problem of water pollution globally. To meet the challenge of industrialization, the use of synthetic dyes in the textile industry, dyeing and printing industry, tannery and paint industry, paper and pulp industry, cosmetic and food industry, dye manufacturing industry, and pharmaceutical industry has increased exponentially. Among these industries, the textile industry is prominent for the water pollution due to the hefty consumption of water and discharge of coloring materials in the effluent. The discharge of this effluent into the aquatic reservoir affects its biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), and pH. The release of the effluents without any remedial treatment will generate a gigantic peril to the aquatic ecosystem and human health. The ecological-friendly treatment of the dye-containing wastewater to minimize the detrimental effect on human health and the environment is the need of the hour. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the catastrophic effects of textile dyes on human health and the environment. This review provides a comprehensive insight into the dyes and chemicals used in the textile industry, focusing on the typical treatment processes for their removal from industrial wastewaters, including chemical, biological, physical, and hybrid techniques.

Recent Literature Review of Significance of Polypyrrole and Its Biocomposites in Adsorption of Dyes from Aqueous Solution

The usage of dyes has been tremendously augmented due to industrialization and human’s intrinsic fascination with colors. Owing to their excessive usage in industries like textiles, food, cosmetics, paints, printing etc., it is indisputably a contributing factor in aquatic pollution. Dyes effluents have emerged as a burgeoning challenge. Owing to issues such as toxicity, mutagenicity, and disturbed photosynthesis associated with dye contamination, it is crucial to look for an explication to deal with this challenge. Polypyrrole-based biocomposites have been reported as good adsorbents for textile wastewater treatment. In the last decade, numerous studies have stated the effective removal of dyes via Polypyrrole-based biocomposites. This review concentrates on the implication of different Polypyrrole-based biocomposites for decontamination of dyes and synthesis methods, characteristics, and mechanism of dyes degradation by these biocomposites from wastewater.

Synthesis and Characterization of MWCNT-COOH/Fe3O4 and CNT-COOH/Fe3O4/NiO Nanocomposites: Assessment of Adsorption and Photocatalytic Performance

In this study the adsorption and photodegradation capabilities of modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), using tartrazine as a model pollutant, is demonstrated. MWCNT-COOH/Fe₃O₄ and MWCNT-COOH/Fe₃O₄/NiO nanocomposites were prepared by precipitation of metal oxides in the presence of MWCNTs. Their properties were examined by X-ray diffraction in powder (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, synchrotron-based Scanning PhotoElectron Microscopy (SPEM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. It was found that the optimal adsorption conditions were pH 4 for MWCNT-COOH/Fe₃O₄ and pH 3 for MWCNT-COOH/Fe₃O₄/NiO, temperature 25 °C, adsorbent dose 1 g L^-1, initial concentration of tartrazine 5 mg L^-1 for MWCNT-COOH/Fe₃O₄ and 10 mg L^-1 for MWCNT-COOH/Fe₃O₄/NiO and contact time 5 min for MWCNT-COOH/Fe₃O₄/NiO and 15 min for MWCNT-COOH/Fe₃O₄. Moreover, the predominant degradation process was elucidated simultaneously, with and without simulated sunlight irradiation, using thermal lens spectrometry (TLS) and UV-Vis absorption spectrophotometry. The results indicated the prevalence of the photodegradation mechanism over adsorption from the beginning of the degradation process.

A novel study on the preferential attachment of chromophore and auxochrome groups in azo dye adsorption on different greenly synthesized magnetite nanoparticles: investigation of the influence of the mediating plant extract's acidity

In this paper, the adsorption of Evans blue (EB) and methyl orange (MO) azo dyes on four greenly synthesized magnetite nanoparticles has been studied to investigate the effect of the mediating plant extract's acidity on magnetite surface reactivity in azo dye adsorption. Magnetite surface reactivity has been studied through the analysis of preferential attachment of dye chromophore and auxochrome groups on magnetite nanoparticles, and adsorption yields. According to the contents of chromophore and auxochrome groups in dye structures, the mediating plant extract's acidity effect on acid site types and densities was also deduced. Used plants for the green synthesis were: Artemisia herba-alba (L), Matricaria pubescens (L), Juniperus phoenicea (L), and Rosmarinus officinalis (L), and their extract pHs were respectively 5.25, 5.05, 4.63, and 3.69. The four greenly synthesized samples of magnetite were characterized by XRD, SEM, ATR-FTIR, and UV-Vis techniques. The novelty of this paper lies in highlighting the influence of the mediating plant extract's acidity on the greenly synthesized magnetite surface reactivity towards the preferential attachment of chromophore and auxochrome functional groups in azo dye adsorption, where obtained results show that the mediating plant extract's acidity has a clear effect on the preferential attachment of chromophore and auxochrome groups on magnetite surfaces as well as on azo dyes' adsorption yields and capacities. Indeed, the decrease in the plant extract's acidity leads to an increase in the attachment of chromophore groups and a decrease in the attachment of auxochrome groups. So, it leads to an increase in Lewis acid site density and a decrease in Brønsted acid site density of magnetite surfaces. Also, the decrease of the plant extract's acidity leads to an increase in the studied dye adsorption yields, and this is because the majority of functional groups of MO and EB dyes are chromophores that attach to Lewis acid sites. The difference found in adsorption yields of EB and MO on all four magnetite samples is due to the fact that the ratio of chromophore/auxochrome groups in EB is remarkably greater than that in MO. The linear and non-linear pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetics of the adsorption as well as the intra-particle diffusion mechanism have been analyzed. Obtained results indicate that in all adsorption processes the adsorption kinetics followed a linear pseudo-first-order kinetic model, and film diffusion is the step that controlled adsorption mechanisms. The thermodynamic studies of EB and MO adsorption processes on the four magnetite surfaces have been analyzed in the temperature range of 303.15-318.15 K. Obtained results reveal the endothermic nature of the adsorption in all cases.

Integration of biochar into Ag3PO4/α-Fe2O3 heterojunction for enhanced reactive oxygen species generation towards organic pollutants removal

A biochar (BC) harbored Ag₃PO₄/α-Fe₂O₃ type-Ⅰ heterojunction (Ag-Fe-BC) was prepared by a hydrothermal-impregnation method to transfer active center of heterojunctions. The electrochemical and spectroscopic tests demonstrated that BC enhanced the catalytic performance of the heterojunction by enhancing photocurrent, reducing fluorescence intensity, and facilitating separation of electron-hole pairs. The photocatalytic activity showed the Ag-Fe-BC (5:1:3) could degrade Rhodamine B (20 mg/L) by up to 92.7%, which was 3.35 times higher than Ag₃PO₄/α-Fe₂O₃. Tetracycline and ciprofloxacin (20 mg/L) were degraded efficiently by 58.3% and 79.4% within 2 h, respectively. Electron paramagnetic resonance and scavenging experiments confirmed the major reactive oxygen species (ROS) consisted of singlet oxygen (¹O₂) and superoxide (·O₂^-). Excellent RhB adsorption and electrons capturing capacity of BC facilitated electron-hole pairs separation and ROS transferring to target organics followed by elevated degradation. Thus, a facile method was proposed to synthesize a highly efficient visible-light responsive photocatalyst for degradation of various organics in water.

Recent Review of Titania-Clay-Based Composites Emerging as Advanced Adsorbents and Photocatalysts for Degradation of Dyes over the Last Decade

Textile industry being one of the most flourishing industries keeps growing and developing every year, and the consequences are not very pleasant. Even though its contribution towards economy of a country is indisputable, there are many pros and cons associated with it that should not be brushed aside, one of them being textile dye waste which is also growing at alarming rate. Many techniques have been designed to deal with this environmental crisis including adsorption and photodegradation of dye waste by various substances, both natural and synthetic. TiO2 and clay both have gained immense popularity in this area. Over the last decade, many successful attempts have been made to design TiO2-clay-based composites to combine and make the most of their individual capabilities to degrade textile dye waste. While clay is an effective adsorbent, inexpensive, innocuous, and a great ion exchanger, TiO2 provides supplementary active sites and free radicals and speeds up the degradation rate of dyes. This review summarizes various features of TiO2-clay-based composites including their surface characteristics, their role as dye adsorbents and photocatalysts, challenges in their implementation, and modifications to overcome these challenges made over the last decade.

Phytochemical analysis and comprehensive evaluation of pharmacological potential of Artemisia brevifolia Wall. ex DC

Multitude of diseases and side effects from conventional drugs have surged the use of herbal remedies. Thus, the current study aimed to appraise various pharmacological attributes of Artemisia brevifolia Wall. ex DC. Extracts prepared by successive solvent extraction were subjected to phytochemical and multimode antioxidant assays. Various polyphenolics and artemisinin derivatives were detected and quantified using RP-HPLC analysis. Compounds present in methanol (M) and distilled water (DW) extracts were identified using high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). Extracts were pharmacologically evaluated for their antibacterial, antifungal, antimalarial, antileishmanial and antidiabetic potentials. Moreover, cytotoxicity against Artemiasalina, human cancer cell lines and isolated lymphocytes was assessed. Genotoxicity was evaluated using comet, micronucleus and chromosomal aberration assays. Lastly, anti-inflammatory potential was determined through a series of in vitro and in vivo assays using BALB/c mice.

Maximum extract recovery (5.95% w/w) was obtained by DW extract. Highest phenolics and flavonoids content, total antioxidant capacity, total reduction potential, percentfree radical scavenging, β-carotene scavenging and iron chelating activities were exhibited by M extract. RP-HPLC analysis revealed significant amounts of various polyphenolic compounds (vanillic acid, syringic acid, emodin and luteolin), artemisinin, dihydro artemisinin, artesunate and artemether in ethyl acetate (EA) extract. Total 40 compounds were detected through HRMS. A noteworthy antimicrobial activity (MIC 22.22 µg/ml) was exhibited by EA extract against A. fumigatus and several bacterial strains. Maximum antimalarial, antileishmanial, brine shrimp lethality and cytotoxic potential against cancer cells was manifested by EA extract. None of the extracts exhibited genotoxicity and toxicity against isolated lymphocytes. Highest α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibition capacities were demonstrated by DW extract. Various in-vivo anti-inflammatory models revealed significant (p < 0.05) anti-inflammatory potential of M and DW extracts. In conclusion, present findings divulged theremarkable pharmacological potential of A. brevifolia and endorse its richness in artemisinin.

Antitumor Effect of Manool in a Murine Melanoma Model

The manool diterpene, found in abundance in Salvia officinalis L., showed a selective cytotoxic effect against murine melanoma cells. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the antitumor potential of manool in a murine melanoma model, administered by three routes: oral, subcutaneous, and intraperitoneal. In addition, the antimelanoma effect of manool (orally) combined with cisplatin (subcutaneous) was evaluated. The results obtained revealed that manool, administered by the three routes, was able to significantly decrease the mass and frequency of mitosis of the tumor tissue. The data obtained revealed that manool, at a dose of 20 mg/kg, was able to significantly decrease the tumor mass when administered by the three routes, with the percentages of reduction being equivalent to 62.4% (oral), 48.5% (intraperitoneal), and 38.8% (subcutaneous), without toxic effects. The treatment of manool plus cisplatin led to 86.7% reduction in tumor mass, higher than that observed in treatment with manool or cisplatin alone (50.7%), although signs of toxicity have been observed. The results also showed that treatments with manool (20 mg/kg orally) and/or cisplatin did not alter the activity of caspase 3 cleaved in tumor tissue. Therefore, manool revealed a promising antimelanoma effect, but without involvement of the caspase 3 cleaved pathway.

Antitumor activity of solamargine in mouse melanoma model: relevance to clinical safety

Melanoma is the most aggressive type of skin cancer, and thus it is important to develop new drugs for its treatment. The present study aimed to examine the antitumor effects of solamargine a major alkaloid heteroside present in Solanum lycocarpum fruit. In addition solamargine was incorporated into nanoparticles (NP) of yttrium vanadate functionalized with 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane (YVO₄:Eu³⁺:CPTES:SM) to determine antitumor activity. The anti-melanoma assessment was performed using a syngeneic mouse melanoma model B16F10 cell line. In addition, systemic toxicity, nephrotoxic, and genotoxic parameters were assessed. Solamargine, at doses of 5 or 10 mg/kg/day administered subcutaneously to male C57BL/6 mice for 5 days, decreased tumor size and frequency of mitoses in tumor tissue, indicative of a decrease in cell proliferation. Treatments with YVO₄:Eu³⁺:CPTES:SM significantly reduced the number of mitoses in tumor tissue, associated with no change in tumor size. There were no apparent signs of systemic toxicity, nephrotoxicity, and genotoxicity initiated by treatments either with solamargine alone or plant alkaloid incorporated into NP. The animals treated with YVO₄:Eu³⁺:CPTES:SM exhibited significant increase in spleen weight accompanied by no apparent histological changes in all tissues examined. In addition, animals treated with solamargine (10 mg/kg/day) and YVO₄:Eu³⁺:CPTES:SM demonstrated significant reduction in hepatic DNA damage which was induced by tumor growth. Therefore, data suggest that solamargine may be considered a promising candidate in cancer therapy with no apparent toxic effects.

Red Phosphorus: An Up-and-Coming Photocatalyst on the Horizon for Sustainable Energy Development and Environmental Remediation

Photocatalysis is a perennial solution that promises to resolve deep-rooted challenges related to environmental pollution and energy deficit through harvesting the inexhaustible and renewable solar energy. To date, a cornucopia of photocatalytic materials has been investigated with the research wave presently steered by the development of novel, affordable, and effective metal-free semiconductors with fascinating physicochemical and semiconducting characteristics. Coincidentally, the recently emerged red phosphorus (RP) semiconductor finds itself fitting perfectly into this category ascribed to its earth abundant, low-cost, and metal-free nature. More notably, the renowned red allotrope of the phosphorus family is spectacularly bestowed with strengthened optical absorption features, propitious electronic band configuration, and ease of functionalization and modification as well as high stability. Comprehensively detailing RP's roles and implications in photocatalysis, this review article will first include information on different RP allotropes and their chemical structures, followed by the meticulous scrutiny of their physicochemical and semiconducting properties such as electronic band structure, optical absorption features, and charge carrier dynamics. Besides that, state-of-the-art synthesis strategies for developing various RP allotropes and RP-based photocatalytic systems will also be outlined. In addition, modification or functionalization of RP with other semiconductors for promoting effective photocatalytic applications will be discussed to assess its versatility and feasibility as a high-performing photocatalytic system. Lastly, the challenges facing RP photocatalysts and future research directions will be included to propel the feasible development of RP-based systems with considerably augmented photocatalytic efficiency. This review article aspires to facilitate the rational development of multifunctional RP-based photocatalytic systems by widening the cognizance of rational engineering as well as to fine-tune the electronic, optical, and charge carrier properties of RP.

A review on application of phytoremediation technique for eradication of synthetic dyes by using ornamental plants

Phytoremediation emerges as an innovative and eco-friendly technique to remediate textile dyes with the use of various categories of plants. In recent years, ornamental plants emerge as more attractive and effective substitute in comparison to edible plants for phytoremediation. Regardless of aesthetic value, some ornamental plants can be grown to remediate the sites contaminated with dyes, heavy metals, pesticides, or other organic compounds. In this review, we focus on pioneer research on synthetic dye removal using ornamental plants and evaluate the phytoremediation capability of ornamental plants for treatment of textile effluent. This paper also emphasized specific ornamental plants having high accumulation and tolerance ability for removal of dyes. The mechanisms explored for the phytoremediation of dyes by ornamental plants have also been explained. This review will also be helpful for researchers for exploring more new ornamental plants in phytoremediation technique.

Suspect and non-target screening of chemicals in clothing textiles by reversed-phase liquid chromatography/hybrid quadrupole-Orbitrap mass spectrometry

The global manufacturing of clothing is usually composed of multistep processes, which include a large number of chemicals. However, there is generally no information regarding the chemical content remaining in the finished clothes. Clothes in close and prolonged skin contact may thus be a significant source of daily human exposure to hazardous compounds depending on their ability to migrate from the textiles and be absorbed by the skin. In the present study, twenty-four imported garments on the Swedish market were investigated with respect to their content of organic compounds, using a screening workflow. Reversed-phase liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionization/high-resolution mass spectrometry was used for both suspect and non-target screening. The most frequently detected compound was benzothiazole followed by quinoline. Nitroanilines with suspected mutagenic and possible skin sensitization properties, and quinoline, a carcinogenic compound, were among the compounds occurring at the highest concentrations. In some garments, the level of quinoline was estimated to be close to or higher than 50,000 ng/g, the limit set by the REACH regulation. Other detected compounds were acridine, benzotriazoles, benzothiazoles, phthalates, nitrophenols, and organophosphates. Several of the identified compounds have logP and molecular weight values enabling skin uptake. This pilot study indicates which chemicals and compound classes should be prioritized for future quantitative surveys and control of the chemical content in clothing as well as research on skin transfer, skin absorption, and systemic exposure. The results also show that the current control and prevention from chemicals in imported garments on the Swedish market is insufficient.

Prediction of methyl orange removal by iron decorated activated carbon using an artificial neural network

Date Stones were used as a bio-degradable waste source for preparing iron impregnated activated carbon. The prepared activated carbon-containing oxides of iron were characterized using SEM, XRD, FTIR, and BET. The specific surface area of the iron decorated activated carbon was 738.65 m²/g. The XRD confirmed the presence of magnetite and hematite while the SEM images assured the presence of pores. The prepared activated carbon was used to remove methyl orange from wastewater. Genetic Algorithm was used to develop a model which could predict the removal efficiency of the dye. The ANN model was validated and the effect of different parameters like adsorbent dosage (0.1-1 g/L), initial dye concentration (2-20 mg/L), pH (2-11), time (10-55 min) and temperature (30-75°C) was estimated both experimentally and predicted using the model. The adsorption process follows the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The values of 1/n and K_F obtained from the Freundlich isotherm designate good adsorption capacity. Both experimental and model-predicted data agrees with the kinetic model. The adsorption rate is proportionate to the square of the number of vacant adsorption sites. From the thermodynamic study, the positive worth of ΔH° indicates the energy-absorbing nature of the surface assimilation method and the process is endothermic in nature. The low values of each ΔG° (-200 to 0 kJ/mol) and ΔH° correspond to physical surface assimilation. A positive worth of ΔS° reflects the inflated randomness at the solid-aqueous interface with some structural changes in adsorbate and adsorbent.

Preventive activity of Copaifera langsdorffii Desf. leaves extract and its major compounds, afzelin and quercitrin, on DNA damage in in vitro and in vivo models

Copaifera langsdorffii Desf. is a plant found in South America, especially in Brazil. Oleoresin and the leaves of this plant is used as a popular medicinal agent. However, few studies on the chemical composition of aerial parts and related biological activities are known. This study aimed to examine the cytotoxic, genotoxic, and antigenotoxic potential of C. langsdorffii aerial parts hydroalcoholic extract (CLE) and two of its major compounds afzelin and quercitrin. The cytotoxic and antigenotoxic potential of CLE was determined as follows: 1) against genotoxicity induced by doxorubicin (DXR) or methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) in V79 cells; 2) by direct and indirect-acting mutagens in Salmonella typhimurium strains; and 3) by MMS in male Swiss mice. The protective effects of afzelin and quercitrin against DXR or MMS were also evaluated in V79 and HepG2 cells. CLE was cytotoxic as evidenced by clonogenic efficiency assay. Further, CLE did not induce a significant change in frequencies of chromosomal aberrations and micronuclei; as well as number of revertants in the Ames test demonstrating absence of genotoxicity. In contrast, CLE was found to be antigenotoxic in mammalian cells. The results also showed that CLE exerted inhibitory effect against indirect-acting mutagens in the Ames test. Afzelin and quercitrin did not reduce genotoxicity induced by DXR or MMS in V79 cells. However, treatments using afzelin and quercitrin decreased MMS-induced genotoxicity in HepG2 cells. The antigenotoxic effect of CLE observed in this study may be partially attributed to the antioxidant activity of the combination of major components afzelin and quercitrin.

Textile dyes loaded chitosan nanoparticles: Characterization, biocompatibility and staining capacity

Textile dyeing is a hazardous and toxic process. While traditionally it has been managed through effluent treatment, new approaches focused upon improving the dyeing process are gaining relevance. In this work, we sought to obtain, for the first time, an eco-friendly chitosan-nanoparticle based textile dyeing method. To that end, yellow everzol and navy blue itosperse loaded chitosan nanoparticles were produced and their capacity to dye textiles and cytotoxicity towards human skin cells were evaluated. The results obtained showed that it was possible to obtain nanoencapsulated dyes through ionic gelation with an average entrapment efficacy above 90 %. Nanoparticles presented a positive surface charge and sizes between 190 and 800 nm with yellow everzol NPs occurring via ionic interactions while navy blue itosperse NPs were formed through hydrogen bonds. Furthermore, the produced dye NPs presented no cytotoxicity towards HaCat cells and presented staining percentages reaching 17.60 % for a viscose/wool blend.

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Severe Dry Eye in Bangladesh-Based Factory Garment Workers

This study sought to evaluate the prevalence of dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and the associated factors of severe dry eye symptoms (SDES) among garments worker of Gazipur, Bangladesh. We prospectively collected cross-sectional data for 1050 garments workers of a factory (70% response). All participants had an evaluation of the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), and a detailed ophthalmic examination including tear breakup time (TBUT), ocular surface fluorescein staining, and Schirmer’s I test. MGD grading was based on the viscosity/color and ease of manual expression of meibum. Mean age of participants was 35.5 ± 12.1 years; 53.8% were women. The prevalence of dry eye (OSDI > 12) was 64.2% (95% CI 61.2–67.1%). OSDI was not significantly different between sex or age-groups but associated with increasing MGD grade (p < 0.001), reduced TBUT (<5 s) [p < 0.001], and reduced Schirmer’s test (<5 mm) [p < 0.001]. Thirty-five percent had SDES (OSDI > 32). Using univariate logistic regressions, SDES was associated with older age (Odds Ratio (OR) 1.01, 95% Confidence Interval [1.005–1.03] per year increase) and male sex (OR 1.76, 95% CI: 1.36–2.27). When adjusted for age and sex, SDES were strongly associated with increase in MGD severity grading (OR 188, 95% CI: 91–390). However, in multivariate regression, TBUT, but not MGD severity, became the only significant determinant of SDES (OR 13.0, 95% CI: 6.3–27.0, for every 1 s decrease in TBUT). MGD is common in garments workers, contributing to dry eye symptoms in addition to other tear parameters. Reduced tear stability is associated with SDES.

Adverse effects of textile dyes on antioxidant enzymes and cholinesterase activities in Drosophila melanogaster (Oregon R+)

The effluents from textile dyeing industry are causing water pollution and may transform into more toxic and carcinogenic chemical species by environmental conditions. Therefore systemic toxicity of textile dyes is major health concern. Hence, this study sought to examine the toxic effect of disperse textile dyes on important systemic enzymes in the larvae of wild type Drosophila melanogaster (Oregon R⁺). Drosophila larvae were fed with corn-sugar-yeast diets containing two disperse dyes, Disperse blue-124 and Disperse black-9 (1, 10 and 100 mg/mL) for 2 days (48 h) and subsequent the enzymatic estimations were carried out using larval homogenate. In silico molecular docking studies were also performed to analyze the binding interaction of these dyes with acetyl choline esterase enzyme. Disperse black 9 shows more strong binding by occupying a groove and forming one hydrogen bond with Tyr465 of acetyl choline esterase enzyme while Disperse blue-124 shows surface binding without forming any hydrogen bond. Drosophila larvae fed on these dyes exhibited a dose-dependent increase in acetyl choline esterase enzymatic activity (1.8 fold increase with Disperse black-9, 100 mg/mL) while 4.4-folds Disperse blue-124, 100 mg/mL). Both Disperse Blue and Disperse Black dyes altered the activities of antioxidant enzymes Catalase (CAT, increased more than 2.5 fold), Superoxide dismutase (SOD, increased more than two folds) and showed a dose-dependent increase in Xanthine oxidase and lipid peroxidation (LPO) levels (more than 3 folds). Therefore both the disperse dyes were found to dysregulate the activities of antioxidant enzymes which may be the underlying mechanism for their toxic effects.

Thermochemical Conversion of Waste Glass and Mollusk Shells into an Absorbent Material for Separation of Direct Blue 15 Azo Dye from Industrial Wastewater

The objective of the presented work was to convert waste glass and mollusk shells into a porous material for separation of the direct blue 15 azo dye from industrial wastewater. The porous glass material of specific pore size and surface area was prepared through a thermochemical reaction by reacting waste glass with mollusk shells, soda, and rock salt. The optimal reaction conditions were determined by adjusting the reaction time, reaction temperature, and relative amount of the reactants. The surface morphology, elemental composition, and functional groups of the material were studied through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray florescence spectroscopy (XRF), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) methods were used to determine the pore size distribution and surface area of the porous material. The material consisted of different types of flakes, oval-shaped particles, and granules. In addition to the functionalized char, the porous material contained Si-O-Si, Si-O-Al, and Si-OH groups. Relatively better yield and pore size distribution were obtained at a reaction temperature of 800 °C and reaction time of 90 min. The fully characterized material was used to separate the blue dye from industrial wastewater. This porous material absorbed about 2.66 mg/g blue dye from wastewater after 20 min of treatment time. The adsorption data fit the Freundlich isotherm better than the Langmuir isotherm. The correlation coefficient of Freundlich isotherm varied from 0.93 to 0.98, which was slightly higher than the correlation coefficient of Langmuir isotherm.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants over MFe2O4 (M = Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) Nanoparticles at Neutral pH

In this study, we report a surfactant-mediated synthesis of ferrites (MFe2O4: M = Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) using the co-precipitation-oxidation method. The band gap calculated from UV-Visible diffuse reflectance spectra were found in the range of 1.11-1.81 eV. These ferrite nanocatalysts were studied for the photocatalytic degradation of multiple organic dyes in a 32 W UV-C/H2O2 system. All the four ferrites showed an excellent dye degradation rate in the range of 2.065-2.417 min-1 at neutral pH. In the optimized condition, NiF was found to degrade 89%, 92%, 93%, and 78% of methylene blue, methyl orange, bromo green, and methyl red, respectively within 1 min of UV-irradiation. A 40% TOC removal was recorded after 5 min of degradation reaction, which increased to 60% after 50 min. Mechanism elucidated by scavenger studies and fluorescence spectroscopy revealed that •OH and holes were the primary reactive radicals responsible for the degradation process. Ferrite photocatalysts showed an insignificant performance loss in seven consecutive cycles. The photocatalyst was found efficient in the presence of a high concentration of salts. Thus, it was concluded that these photocatalysts are highly suitable for the remediation of dye-contaminated wastewater.

Application of QSARs in identification of mutagenicity mechanisms of nitro and amino aromatic compounds against Salmonella typhimurium species

In an attempt to describe the underlying causes of mutagenicity mainly due to organic chemicals, quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models have been developed using two different Salmonella typhimurium mutagenicity endpoints with or without presence of liver metabolic microsomal enzymes (S9) namely TA98-S9 and TA98 + S9. The models were developed using simple 2D variables having definite physicochemical meaning calculated from Dragon, SiRMS, and PaDEL-descriptor software tools. Stepwise regression followed by partial least squares (PLS) regression was used in model development following the strict OECD guidelines for QSAR model development and validation. The models were validated using coefficient of determination R², cross-validation coefficient Q²_LOO (leave one out) while the test set predictions were analyzed using Q²F₁ (coefficient of determination for the test set). Several other internationally accepted validation metrics like MAE_95%train, average r_m(LOO)² and Δr_m(LOO)² (for the training set) were used to check model robustness while predictive efficiency was evaluated using MAE_95%test, average r_m² and Δr_m² (for the test set). The scope of predictions was defined by applicability domain analysis using the DModX approach, a recommended tool for PLS models. The major contributing features related to mutagenicity include lipophilicity, electronegativity, branching and unsaturation, etc. The present manuscript is the first attempt to undertake modeling of two different endpoints (TA98-S9 and TA98 + S9) in order to explore major contributing molecular features linked directly or indirectly to mutagenicity.

Clothing-Mediated Exposures to Chemicals and Particles

A growing body of evidence identifies clothing as an important mediator of human exposure to chemicals and particles, which may have public health significance. This paper reviews and critically assesses the state of knowledge regarding how clothing, during wear, influences exposure to molecular chemicals, abiotic particles, and biotic particles, including microbes and allergens. The underlying processes that govern the acquisition, retention, and transmission of clothing-associated contaminants and the consequences of these for subsequent exposures are explored. Chemicals of concern have been identified in clothing, including byproducts of their manufacture and chemicals that adhere to clothing during use and care. Analogously, clothing acts as a reservoir for biotic and abiotic particles acquired from occupational and environmental sources. Evidence suggests that while clothing can be protective by acting as a physical or chemical barrier, clothing-mediated exposures can be substantial in certain circumstances and may have adverse health consequences. This complex process is influenced by the type and history of the clothing; the nature of the contaminant; and by wear, care, and storage practices. Future research efforts are warranted to better quantify, predict, and control clothing-related exposures.

Amido Black 10B a widely used azo dye causes DNA damage in pro- and eukaryotic indicator cells

Acid Black 10B (AB10B) is widely used for the production of textiles, leather and prints. It is a representative of azo dyes and it is well documented that some of these compounds are mutagenic per se, and that cleavage products (in particular aromatic amines) may cause damage of the genetic material and cancer. Since no toxicological data on AB10B have been published, we evaluated its mutagenic activity in Salmonella/microsome assays and studied its acute toxic and genotoxic properties in a human derived liver cell line (HepG2) which retained the activities of drug metabolizing enzymes. The compound did not cause cytotoxicity (MTT assay), but clear genotoxic effects were detected in pro- and eukaryotic indicator cells. Dose dependent induction of his⁺ revertants was seen in strain TA98 which detects frameshift mutations without metabolic activation; a more pronounced effect was seen in its derivative YG1024 which overexpresses N-acetyltransferase. Induction of single/double strand breaks by Comet assay was detected with concentrations > 0.125 mg/mL in liver derived cells; as well as increased rates for micronucleus (reflecting structural and numeric chromosomal aberrations) and nuclear buds which are a consequence of gene amplifications were seen with a higher dose (2.0 mg/mL) (p < 0.05; Tukey's test). The mutational pattern which was observed in the bacterial tests indicates that the cleavage product p-nitroaniline may cause the genotoxic effects of the dye. Our findings indicate that exposure of humans and the release of the compound into the environment may lead to adverse effects due to its DNA damaging activity.

Performances of Pichia kudriavzevii in decolorization, biodegradation, and detoxification of C.I. Basic Blue 41 under optimized cultural conditions

The aim of this study was to evaluate the performances of Pichia kudriavzevii CR-Y103 yeast strain for the decolorization, biodegradation, and detoxification of cationic dye C.I. Basic Blue 41, a toxic compound to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. Under optimized cultural conditions (10.0-g L^-1 glucose, 0.2-g L^-1 yeast extract, and 1.0-g L^-1 (NH₄)₂SO₄), the yeast strain was able to decolorize 97.86% of BB41 (50 mg L^-1) at pH 6 within 4 h of incubation at 30 °C under shaken conditions (12,238.00-μg h^-1 average decolorization rate) and 100% within 12 h. The UV-Vis spectral analysis, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis confirmed the complete decolorization and degradation of the BB41 dye by P. kudriavzevii CR-Y103. Also, other seven yeast strains, isolated from soil, as P. kudriavzevii (CR-Y108, CR-Y119, and CR-Y112), Candida tropicalis CR-Y128, Cyberlindnera saturnus CR-Y125, and Candida solani CR-Y124 have shown a promising decolorizing potential of azo-dye BB41 (99.89-76.09% decolorization). Phytotoxicity, cytotoxicity, and genotoxicity assays on Trifolium pratense and Triticum aestivum seedlings confirmed the high toxicity of BB41 dye (500 ppm), with inhibition on germination rate (%), root and shoot elongation, decreasing of mitoxic index value (with 34.03% in T. pratense and 40.25% in T. aestivum), and increasing the frequency of chromosomal aberrations (6.87 times in T. pratense and 6.25 times in T. aestivum), compared to control. The same biomarkers indicated the nontoxic nature of the BB41 degraded metabolite (500 ppm) obtained after P. kudriavzevii CR-Y103 treatment. Moreover, the healthy monkey kidney cells (Vero cells) had a low sensitivity to BB41 biodegraded products (250 μg mL^-1) (MTT cell viability assay) and revealed minor DNA damage (comet assay) compared to BB41 dye treatment. These findings show that P. kudriavzevii could be used in eco-friendly bioremediation technologies, applicable for reducing the toxicity of basic azo-dyes containing wastewaters.

Genotoxicity of textile dye C.I. Disperse Blue 291 in mouse bone marrow

Color Index (C.I.) Disperse Blue 291 (DB291) is an azo dye used by the textile industry. After yarn dyeing, wastewater containing the dye, released into the aquatic environment, may pollute drinking water sources. We investigated the mutagenicity and genotoxicity of DB291 in male Swiss mice, following oral administration. Micronucleated cells, primary DNA damage (comet assay) in blood, liver, and kidney cells, and BAX, BCL2, SMAD4 and TNFA gene expression in leukocytes were evaluated. An increased frequency of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes (MNPCEs) was observed in animals treated with 50 mg/kg bw; no other genetic alteration was detected. Neither primary DNA damage nor changes in gene expression were observed.

Chemicals from textiles to skin: an in vitro permeation study of benzothiazole

Despite the possible impact on human health, few studies have been conducted to assess the penetration and accumulation of contaminants in the skin after a prolonged contact with textile materials. In previous studies, we have shown that benzothiazole and its derivatives, as well as other potentially hazardous chemicals, often are present as textile contaminants in clothes available on the retail market. Since benzothiazole is a common contaminant in clothes, these can be a possible route for human chemical exposure, both systemic and onto the skin. To investigate this potential exposure, Franz-type and flow-through cells were used for the permeation studies together with a Strat-M® artificial membranes. Experiments were performed using solutions of benzothiazole, as well as contaminated textile samples in the donor chamber. Benzothiazole was demonstrated to penetrate through, as well as being accumulated in the membrane mimicking the skin. After 24 h, up to 62% of benzothiazole was found in the acceptor cell, while up to 37% was found absorbed in the skin mimicking membrane. It also was shown that there was release and permeation from contaminated fabrics. The results indicate that benzothiazole can be released from textile materials, penetrate through the skin, and further enter the human body. This will possibly also apply to other chemical contaminants in textiles, and the results of this study indicate that the presence of these textile contaminants entails potential health risks. A rough risk assessment was made for clothing textiles according to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and European regulations for carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic compounds, using literature data for benzothiazole.

Exploring the Reusability of Synthetically Contaminated Wastewater Containing Crystal Violet Dye using Tectona grandis Sawdust as a Very Low-Cost Adsorbent

Present investigation explores the possible reusability of synthetically contaminated wastewater containing crystal violet (CV) organic dye using Tectona grandis sawdust (TGSD) waste as a very low-cost adsorbent. The adsorbent was characterized by proximate, SEM/EDX, FTIR, and XRD analyses. Batch adsorption studies were carried under changing conditions of contact time, the initial concentration of CV, pH, TGSD dose, TGSD particle size, and temperature. The experimental data were tested using Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models, and the data were best followed by Langmuir one. The kinetic results were examined in the light of different models and pseudo-second-order was obtained to be best obeyed. The values of ΔH° (28.642 kJ/mol), ΔG° (-10.776 to -7.080 kJ/mol) and ΔS° (121.8 J/K/mol) in the temperature range of 293-323 K suggested the overall process to be spontaneous, endothermic and associated with an increase in randomness. On the basis of experimental results and their analyses, it has been established that TGSD is one of the most effective adsorbents among those obtained from the domestic, agricultural and industrial wastes. Thus this adsorbent can be effectively utilized to make the impure wastewater reusable.

Possibilities of Obtaining from Highly Polluted Environments: New Bacterial Strains with a Significant Decolorization Potential of Different Synthetic Dyes

The aim of this study was the isolation of bacterial strains which have the ability to decolorize synthetic dyes belonging to different chemical groups. The samples for bacterial isolation were collected from aqueous environments-two activated sludges and polluted local river. At the first stage of screening (performed on the solid media supplemented with two dyes-azo Evans blue or triphenylmethane brilliant green), 67 bacterial strains were isolated capable to decolorize the used dyes. In the further study, six dyes with different chemical structures were used: fluorone dyes (Bengal rose, erythrosine), triphenylmethane dyes (brilliant green, crystal violet), azo dyes (Evans blue, Congo red). Initial concentration of each of these chemicals in samples was 0.1 g/l. Obtained results showed that only 31 isolates were able to decolorize all six used dyes (with different efficiencies). Among them, 11 strains were isolated from the river (55% of isolates from this site) and 20 from activated sludges collected from two different treatment plants (15 from the first water treatment plant and 5 from the second which were 42 and 43% of isolated cultures respectively). The decolorizing microorganisms are mostly isolated from different industrial sewages (e.g., textile industry), but results of the study showed that water from polluted river as well as municipal wastewaters may be a precious source for isolation of bacterial strains with the wide spectrum and high decolorization potential. In general, there were no statistically significant differences between decolorization abilities of strains isolated from different sites. The group of dyes that was removed with the highest yield was triphenylmethanes (75.6%), followed by fluorones (70.0%) and azo group (60.9%). The analysis of decolorization efficiency of the individual dyes revealed the best removal results in case of triphenylmethane brilliant green (average removal 85.7%), followed by fluorone erythrosine (average removal 78.9%), triphenylmethane crystal violet (average removal 65.5%), azo Evans blue (average removal 64.4%), fluorone Bengal rose (average removal 61.0%), and azo Congo red (average removal 57.4%). Obtained results revealed that the dye susceptibility to decolorization depends on the characteristic chemical structure of given dye groups but more important is chemical structure of strictly given dye within the group.
