Abstract
Background DDT (Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) is a synthetic organochlorine pesticide used in agriculture and mosquito control but later banned due to its harmful effects on humans. It persists in the environment, biomagnified through the food chain, and poses serious health risks, including reproductive defect, cancer, and nervous system disorders. DDT has a long half-life and potential of long-range transport and continuing to contaminate long after use and remains to pose a global environmental and health concern. Therefore, this review was designed to assess the concentration of DDT metabolites (p,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDD, and p,p'-DDE) in various food items and evaluate the health risk to consumers in the African. Methods The preferred reporting item for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) protocol was used to conduct this work. SCOPUS, PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, DOAJ, national repository, and MedNar were used to retrieve articles from October 1, 2023, to January 20, 2024. Meta-analysis data visualized using a forest plot. A random-effects model was applied when heterogeneity existed in overall mean concentration of DDT metabolites. The subgroup analysis, meta-regression, and sensitivity analysis was conducted and the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Assessment tool to assess the quality of the studies. Results The overall mean concentrations of p,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDD and p,p'-DDE, regardless of the types of food items, were 0.188, 0.22, and 0.0878 mg/kg, respectively. Based on the type of food items, The current study found that residue levels of DDT metabolites in vegetables, milk, and cereals exceeded the Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) set by FAO/WHO/EU (0.05, 0.02, and 0.05 mg/kg, respectively), while residue levels in meat, khat, and fruit were below the MRLs (5, 0.5, and 0.05 mg/kg, respectively). The findings of the health risk assessment revealed that consumers are prone to both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks from DDT metabolites. The persistence and bioaccumulation of these metabolites, along with multiple exposure routes and improper handling, may increase long-term health risks, even at low doses. DDT metabolite levels in most food categories exceed recommended limits, posing significant health risks to consumers. To reduce reliance on DDT, effective and cost-efficient alternative insecticides and vector-control strategies must be developed. Promoting environmental management, improving housing, and implementing farm-to-fork risk-based actions, such as Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), across the food chain are crucial to mitigating the adverse effects of DDT exposure in the African region.

Abstract
Most agricultural products are exposed to pesticides. Organochlorine (OCPs) insecticides have been banned for years due to their persistence in the environment and lipophilic properties. On the other hand, some carcinogenic organophosphates are used in high amounts. Therefore, this systematic review was performed with the keywords; pesticide, carcinogenic, carcinogen, residue, contamination, pollution, and food to determine the type of food and pesticide. 663 manuscripts were found by searching in databases. After initial screening and quality assessment of full text, 26 manuscripts were selected. In this study, by reviewing selected manuscripts, about 13 pesticides were associated with carcinogenic effects. These pesticides were Chlorothalonil, Glyphosate, Tetrachlorvinphos, Parathion, Malathion, Diazinon, heptachlor, Hexachlorobenzene, aldrin, dieldrin, DDT, chlordane, Lindane. Most of these pesticides were organochlorine. The organochlorine pesticides are primarily detected in foods of animal origin. In some studies, the amount of carcinogenic organochlorine was higher than the permissible levels. From the carcinogenic herbicide, Glyphosate. An important finding of this systematic review is that carcinogenic organochlorines are still a threat to cancer incidence.

Abstract
Biological control has been effectively exploited by mankind since 300 CE. By promoting the natural regulation of pests, weeds, and diseases, it produces societal benefits at the food-environment-health nexus. Here we scrutinize biological control endeavours and their social-ecological outcomes through a holistic 'One-Health' lens, recognizing that the health of humans, animals, plants, and the wider environment are linked and interdependent. Evidence shows that biological control generates desirable outcomes within all One Health dimensions, mitigating global change issues such as chemical pollution, biocide resistance, biodiversity loss, and habitat destruction. Yet, its cross-disciplinary achievements remain underappreciated. To remedy this, we advocate a systems-level, integrated approach to biological control research, policy, and practice. Framing biological control in a One Health context helps to unite medical and veterinary personnel, ecologists, conservationists and agricultural professionals in a joint quest for solutions to some of the most pressing issues in planetary health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pesticide residues in animal feed can endanger animal health and compromise the safety of livestock products for human consumption. Even though policymakers such as the European Union and the World Health Organization have established maximum residue levels (MRLs) for pesticides in both human food and animal feed, there is no systematic management of pesticides in animal feed that considers the entire supply chain. In response, we propose a framework for defining consistent MRLs for pesticides in animal feed that assesses the impact of defined MRLs on upstream (e.g., MRLs in feed crops) and downstream (e.g., MRLs in livestock products) sectors of the livestock-product supply chain. RESULTS The MRLs determined for the selected pesticides in the feed of cattle and sheep as case study animals indicate that lipophilic pesticides tend to have lower MRLs than hydrophilic pesticides, primarily due to the relatively high toxicity and biotransfer factors of lipophilic pesticides. In addition, we observe that, primarily for lipophilic pesticides, upstream and downstream regulations are not aligned in terms of defining MRLs in feed using current MRLs in crops with relevance to feed and foods of animal origin. CONCLUSION Some of the current pesticide regulations in the livestock-product supply chain need to be re-evaluated to ensure that MRLs in the upstream sector (i.e., crops) do not result in unacceptable residues in the downstream sector (i.e., MRLs in livestock products affecting animal and human health). Finally, we provide recommendations for optimizing the derivation of MRLs in feed, including the evaluation of residue fate during feed and food manufacturing processes. © 2022 The Authors. Abstract
Herbicides are chemicals that have been established to have adverse impacts. However, they are still widely used in agriculture. Pendimethalin (PDM) is an herbicide that is widely used in many countries to control annual grasses. The possibility of livestock being exposed to PDM is relatively high, considering the half-life of PDM and its residues in water, soil and crops. However, the toxicity of PDM in cattle, especially in the mammary glands, has not been reported. Therefore, we investigated whether PDM has toxic effects in the mammary epithelial cells (MAC-T) of cattle. MAC-T cells were treated with various doses (0, 2.5, 5 and 10 μM) of PDM. We found that PDM affected cell viability and cell proliferation and causes cell cycle arrest. Furthermore, PDM triggered cell apoptosis, induced excessive ROS production and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) loss, and disrupted calcium homeostasis. In addition, PDM altered the activation of proteins associated with the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response and modified PI3K and MAPK signaling cascades. In conclusion, our current study unveiled the mechanism of PDM in MAC-T cells and we suggest that PDM might be harmful to the mammary gland system of cattle, possibly affecting milk production.

Abstract
As members of the organochlorine group of insecticides, aldrin and dieldrin are effective at protecting agriculture from insect pests. However, because of excessive use and a long half-life, they have contributed to the major pollution of the water/soil environments. Aldrin and dieldrin have been reported to be highly toxic to humans and other non-target organisms, and so their use has gradually been banned worldwide. Various methods have been tried to remove them from the environment, including xenon lamps, combustion, ion conversion, and microbial degradation. Microbial degradation is considered the most promising treatment method because of its advantages of economy, environmental protection, and convenience. To date, a few aldrin/dieldrin-degrading microorganisms have been isolated and identified, including Pseudomonas fluorescens, Trichoderma viride, Pleurotus ostreatus, Mucor racemosus, Burkholderia sp., Cupriavidus sp., Pseudonocardia sp., and a community of anaerobic microorganisms. Many aldrin/dieldrin resistance genes have been identified from insects and microorganisms, such as Rdl, bph, HCo-LGC-38, S2-RDLA302S, CSRDL1A, CSRDL2S, HaRdl-1, and HaRdl-2. Aldrin degradation includes three pathways: the oxidation pathway, the reduction pathway, and the hydroxylation pathway, with dieldrin as a major metabolite. Degradation of dieldrin includes four pathways: oxidation, reduction, hydroxylation, and hydrolysis, with 9-hydroxydieldrin and dihydroxydieldrin as major products. Many studies have investigated the toxicity and degradation of aldrin/dieldrin. However, few reviews have focused on the microbial degradation and biochemical mechanisms of aldrin/dieldrin. In this review paper, the microbial degradation and degradation mechanisms of aldrin/dieldrin are summarized in order to provide a theoretical and practical basis for the bioremediation of aldrin/dieldrin-polluted environment.

Abstract
Fluroxypyr-1-methylheptyl ester (FPMH) is an auxin herbicide that is widely applied to crops and pastures to block growth of post-emergence weeds. Several studies have reported the toxicity of FPMH in aquatic vertebrates. However, the adverse impacts of FPMH on mammals, including domestic animals, have not been reported. The purpose of our current study is to assess the impact of FPMH on the bovine mammary system and milk production. To evaluate the toxicity of FPMH on the mammary glands of lactating cows, the bovine mammary gland epithelial cell line, MAC-T, was exposed to various concentrations (0, 5, 7.5, 10, 15, and 20 μM) of FPMH for 24 h, and then various assessments were performed. The results showed that FPMH dose-dependently reduced MAC-T cell viability following exposure to FPMH and induced mitochondrial depolarization and apoptosis. FPMH also modulated signaling through the PI3K and MAPK pathways. In addition, the expression levels of proteins related to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress were upregulated, indicating induction of ER stress, and calcium homeostasis was disrupted following FPMH treatment. In conclusion, our investigation suggests that FPMH may be toxic to the bovine mammary system and may decrease dairy production.

Abstract
Seasonal levels of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in yam, cassava, sweet potato and cocoyam samples collected from Esa-Oke Farm Settlement, Osun State, Nigeria were evaluated. Sampling regiment for three sites lasted four months each during the dry and wet seasons. The dried samples were extracted using Soxhlet extractor with dichloromethane (DCM) as the extraction solvent, while the identification and estimation of OCPs in the crop filtrates, after clean-up, were carried out with Gas Chromatography equipped with Time-of-Flight Mass Spectroscopy Detector (GC-TOFMS). Ten OCPs determined in the crops had the overall seasonal mean levels that ranged from 158 ng/g (dieldrin) to 544 ng/g (heptachlor) and the seasonal mean burden per OCP occurred in the order: heptachlor epoxide (518) > heptachlor (447) > p,p'-DDE (431) > dieldrin (349) > chlordane (327) > aldrin (321) > p,p'-DDD (313) > methoxychlor (303) > endosulfan I (287) > p,p'-DDT (284) for wet season while this order was not the same for dry season of the same crop with heptachlor epoxide (415) > p,p'-DDE (373) > aldrin (305) > heptachlor (307) > methoxychlor (288) > chlordane (274) > p,p'-DDT (263) > p,p'-DDD (263) > endosulfan I (260) > dieldrin (246). For all of the OCPs, the estimated daily intake (EDI) and health risk indices (HRI) were significantly higher than the recommended values. Thus, a regular large-scale consumption of crop products from the farm settlement could result in grave public health concern in the course of time.

Abstract
Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) have been used globally to boost food production. Although banned, due to their prolonged toxic effects but their residue still impacts the quality of primary and processed agricultural products. This study assesses the levels of residual OCPs (α,β,δ-HCH, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, chlordane, methoxychlor, aldrin, dieldrin, endrin, endrin aldehyde, endrin ketone, endosulfan, endosulfan sulfate, 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane (DDD), 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethylene (DDE), and 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane (DDT)) in food commonly consumed in Lagos and Ibadan, Southwest, Nigeria. Health risk associated with human exposure via food intake was evaluated with a statistical predictive model. About 248 composite food samples from 8 categories were analyzed in Lagos and Ibadan. Sample extraction and clean-up were by QueChERS method and extracts injected into GC-μECD. ƩDDT concentration was highest in meat products, aquatic foods, dairy products, edible oils, fruits, and cereals, while ƩHCHs were highest in chicken eggs and vegetables. ƩOCP concentrations (ng/g) in food categories were 6.09±1.6-6.85±0.9 (meat), 5.29±2.0-12.3±14 (aquatic foods), 4.86±1.7-5.89±0.8 (dairy products), 4.53±0.8-6.32±1.1 (edible oils), 3.32±1.3 (eggs), 3.54±1.0-4.80±1.5 (fruits), 4.16±2.7-4.40±0.8 (vegetables), and 6.12±2.0-6.62±0.9 (cereals). The estimated average daily intake of OCPs was 5.91, 12.5, 4.41, 6.40, 1.53, 5.14, 3.95, and 16.7 ng/kg bw/day through the consumption of meat products, aquatic foods, dairy products, edible oils, chicken eggs, fruits, vegetables, and cereals, respectively. The health risk of residual OCPs via ingestion of foods considered in this study was <1, which implied no potential health risk at the current consumption rate. However, regular monitoring of OCPs residues in food is highly recommended. Finally, the method scaled the analytical Eco-Scale evaluation and Green Analytical Chemical Procedure Index as "an acceptable green analysis method."

Abstract
To help countries worldwide regulate agricultural soil standards for organic contaminants, this study developed the pastoral-based chemical lifecycle management (PBCLM) modeling framework, which comprehensively models the bottom-up causation of the chemicals' lifecycle at each level of the cattle industry and delivers top-down regulatory strategies. The lifecycle models for a total of 308 hydrophobic organic contaminants were constructed. The results indicated that the octanol-water partitioning coefficient (log KOW) values had the greater impact on the unit-legal-limit-based concentrations for contaminants at the producer level (i.e., grass) or higher. In addition, the analysis of the weather variables indicated that pastoral farming in warmer and drier places might lead to the bioaccumulation of more contaminants. By comparing the reference legal limits that were derived by the PBCLM, current soil standards might not be effective in protecting human health or harmonizing downstream food regulations. The PBCLM can help regulatory agencies better promulgate soil regulations to ensure sustainable agriculture.

Abstract
Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) samples were collected at monthly intervals between July 2018 and June 2019 from 3 sampling sites (El-Rahawy, Sabal and Tala) situated along the Rosetta branch of the Nile, Egypt, to monitor the presence of 100 pesticides and 5 antibiotics using different extraction procedures followed by GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS. Potential human health risks via the consumption of contaminated fish was also assessed. Of the 72 analyzed fish muscle samples; 86% and 21% were contaminated with pesticides and antibiotics, respectively. Chlorpyrifos (ranging from < LOQ to 0.08 mg/kg) was the most frequently detected pesticide followed by p,p'-DDE (ranging from < LOQ to 0.04 mg/kg) in 83 and 45% of the fish muscle samples, respectively. Nitrofurazone (ranging from 8.6 to 52 μg/kg) was the most frequently detected antibiotic, followed by nitrofurantoin (ranging from 1.1 to 2 μg/kg) and chloramphenicol (ranging from < LOQ to 0.17 μg/kg). These antibiotics were found in 12, 6 and 5% of the fish muscle samples, respectively. The spatial distribution of the detected pesticides and antibiotics in fish samples along the Rosetta branch showed that the highest mean concentrations were found in the Sabal area, followed by samples from Tala and El-Rahawy. An investigation into seasonal variations revealed that the highest mean concentrations of pesticides and antibiotics in fish samples were detected in winter and spring, respectively. According to target hazard quotient (THQ) calculations for the detected pollutants in Nile tilapia muscle, all pollutants gave THQ values lower than 1, indicating that the consumption of this fish from the study sites is unlikely to cause any detrimental effects to consumers.

Abstract
In this study, the detection power of a gas chromatography mass spectrometer (GC-MS) for procymidone and chlorflurenol was significantly enhanced using switchable solvent liquid phase microextraction (SS-LPME) as a preconcentration tool. This was achieved by a comprehensive optimization of significant parameters to the SS-LPME method such as switchable solvent amount, concentration and amount of sodium hydroxide, pH effect and mixing effect. The optimum experimental conditions obtained were used to determine analytical figures of merit for the analytes. The limits of detection obtained were 0.44 and 2.9 ng/mL for procymidone and chlorflurenol, respectively. The optimum method was applied to water sampled from an irrigation canal and two wastewater samples. The samples were spiked at two concentrations and the percent recovery results obtained ranged between 86 and 115% for both analytes. The recovery results together with the low standard deviations recorded validated the method as accurate and precise.

Abstract
The use of free range animals for monitoring environmental health offers opportunities to detect exposure and assess the toxicological effects of pollutants in terrestrial ecosystems. Potential human health risk of dietary intake of metals and metalloid via consumption of offal and muscle of free range chicken, cattle and goats by the urban population in Benin City was evaluated. Muscle, gizzard, liver and kidney samples were analyzed for Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb concentrations using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) while Hg was determined using Hg analyzer. Mean concentrations of metals (mg/kg ww) varied significantly depending upon the tissues and animal species. Human health risk estimations for children and adults showed estimated daily intake (EDI) values of tissues below oral reference dose (RfD) threshold for non essential metals Cd, As, Pb and Hg thus strongly indicating no possible health risk via consumption of animal based food. Calculated Hazard quotient (THQ) was less than 1 (< 1) for all the metals analyzed for both adult and children. However, Cd and As had the highest value of THQ suggestive of possible health risk associated with continuous consumption of Cd and As contaminated animal based foods. Hazard Index (HI) for additive effect of metals was higher in chicken liver and gizzard for children and chicken liver for adults. Thus, HI indicated that chicken liver and gizzard may contribute significantly to adult and children dietary exposure to heavy metals. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed a clear species difference in metal accumulation between chickens and the ruminants. This study provides baseline data for future studies and also valuable evidence of anthropogenic impacts necessary to initiate national and international policies for control of heavy metal and metalloid content in food items.

The levels and distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface water, sediment, and fish (Clarias gariepinus) samples from Ovia River, Southern Nigeria, were evaluated, to assess the contamination profile, dietary intake, and human health risks associated with exposure. Results showed that naphthalene, acenaphthylene, and fluoranthene were the most dominant contaminant in water, sediment, and fish, respectively, with mean concentrations (μg/L) of 3.08, 45.4, and 90.7. Spatial distribution showed high occurrence of PAHs in Ekenwan, the downstream station, for all the matrices. Source identification using multivariate analysis revealed mixed patterns of pyrogenic and petrogenic origins. Estimated daily intake (EDI) of PAHs through fish consumption ranged from 2.18 × 10-7 to 5.23 × 10-5 mg/kg/day; values were however lower than the reference dose (RfD) indicating low risk. Estimated values for hazard quotients (HQs) and hazard index (HI) for both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were below 1 indicating low risk through dietary and non-dietary exposure to water, sediment, and fish from Ovia River. However, estimated HI values for direct ingestion of sediment were above 1, indicating the possibility of non-carcinogenic health risk from exposure. Carcinogenic risk indices also indicated low risk from fish consumption. In spite of the assessed low risk from exposure, continuous monitoring of PAH levels in this water body is imperative to prevent future human health effects.
