Abstract
OBJECTIVE Rotavirus (RV) vaccination was introduced into the UK vaccination schedule in July 2013. This retrospective observational study assessed, in a UK setting, the impact of the vaccination programme on the number of RV gastroenteritis (RVGE) admissions, the complications of RVGE in hospitalised children, and the impact on hospital-acquired RVGE. DESIGN Over a 3 year period, 1-year before and 2 years after the introduction of the vaccine, children under 13 years of age in Lothian region with RV+ve stool sample by PCR were identified, retrospectively, and admission data (length of stay, complications) and vaccination status analysed. Viral strain (vaccine/wild type) was typed using PCR-based methods in vaccinated children. RESULTS Vaccination uptake in the first 2 years of the programme was 93-94%. In the 2 years following vaccine introduction, the annual number of confirmed RVGE admissions fell by 84.7% (95% CI 75.4 to 91.0), from 131 to 20, bed days reduced by 91.1% (86.9 to 94.1), from 325 to 29, and suspected hospital-acquired infections reduced by 95.7% (73.5-99.5), from 23 to 1. The reduction in admissions was seen across all age groups despite the vaccination only being administered to infants. Despite the reduction in incidence, complication rates in children admitted with RVGE remained unchanged across the three study years. A frequent incidental finding was RV vaccine strain in the stools of vaccinated children, up to 43 days after last immunisation. There has been no concurrent increase in rate of intussusception in the region. CONCLUSIONS These results provide encouraging initial evidence of the public health benefit, including to the unimmunised population, of the RV vaccination programme in the UK.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To detect the etiologic agents of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in children using broad molecular-based techniques, and compare clinical presentations among etiologies. STUDY DESIGN This was a prospective population-based surveillance study of children aged <6 years with AGE conducted between 2008 and 2011 as part of the New Vaccine Surveillance Network. Stools from patients and healthy controls were tested for 21 gastrointestinal pathogens using the analyte-specific reagent Gastrointestinal Pathogen Panel and an additional reverse transcription real-time polymerase chain reaction assay for sapovirus and astrovirus. RESULTS Of the 216 stool samples from patients with AGE, 152 (70.4%) tested positive for a pathogen, with norovirus genogroup II (n = 78; 36.1%) and Clostridium difficile (n = 35; 16.2%) the most common pathogens detected. Forty-nine patients (22.7%) tested positive for more than 1 pathogen, including 25 (71%) with a C difficile detection. There were no significant clinical differences among the patients with no pathogen detected, those with a single pathogen detected, and those with ≥2 pathogens detected. CONCLUSION Using a broad molecular testing approach, high rates of enteropathogens were detected in children with AGE, dominated by norovirus genogroup II and C difficile. Coinfections were common but had no identifiable impact on clinical manifestations. As routine diagnostics of AGE progressively evolve toward nucleic acid-based pathogen detection, ongoing systematic studies are needed to better analyze the clinical significance of results.

Abstract
The epidemiology of human group A rotavirus was analyzed by examining genotypic data acquired from 1989 to 2009 in South Korea. This information was derived from all the available published articles on rotavirus studies in South Korea, retrieved from both the PubMed and KoreaMed databases. Four common G types (G1, G2, G3, and G4) and three common P types (P[8], P[4], and P[6]) accounted for approximately 93% and 99% of the rotavirus reports, respectively. The G9 type was frequently detected after 2000, and because of this prevalence, it is considered to be the fifth most important G type rotavirus after the G1.G4 genotypes. Less common G types of the virus such as G12, G11, and G10 were detected in some geographic settings, and it is important to consider the context of these subtypes and their epidemiological significance. The P[9] virus genotype was observed in the study and has been discussed in many other studies; however, the P[3], P[10] and P[25] genotypes were rarely detected in the epidemiological research. In general, the distributions of the G and P genotypes showed temporal and geographical fluctuations, and a nationwide rotavirus vaccine program that targeted these genotypes demonstrated effectiveness in protecting against the circulating rotavirus strains. However, further analysis is needed to determine the true long-term effectiveness of these vaccines; the analysis should also consider the unexpected effects of vaccinations, such as vaccine-induced diseases, herd immunity, and changes in host susceptibilities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Rotavirus (RV) is the main etiological agent of diarrhea in childhood; its laboratory diagnosis is crucial to guide the clinical management and prevention of its spread. RV immunization was introduced in Brazilian 6-month-old children in 2006. The present study was aimed to evaluate three methodologies used for human RV detection in stool samples obtained from patients hospitalized due to gastroenteritis in a teaching hospital and report the impact of RV immunization in hospitalization by diarrhea. METHODS 293 stool samples collected in the 2001-2008 period were analyzed by enzyme immunoassay (EIA), latex agglutination (LA) and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). RESULTS Rotavirus was detected in 34.8% of samples by LA assay, 28.3% of samples by EIA assay and in 25.6% of samples by PAGE assay. Considering the PAGE method as gold standard, the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of EIA were 94.6%, 94.4% and 94.5%, and to LA were 82.6%, 81.6% and 81.9%, respectively. CONCLUSION These results indicate that antigen detection by EIA is a rapid, sensitive and specific method, and could be used in large-scale applications for screening stool samples suspected of RV infection. This study showed decreased incidence of RV infection in hospitalized children prior to the implementation of the national immunization program against RV.

Abstract
Las infecciones agudas del tracto gastrointestinal figuran entre las enfermedades infecciosas más frecuentes. En esta revisión se examinan diversas técnicas para diagnosticar las gastroenteritis que ocasionan bacterias, virus y parásitos. El coprocultivo es el método de elección para el diagnóstico de las infecciones bacterianas intestinales, aunque las infecciones por Clostridium difficile se pueden diagnosticar mediante la detección de las toxinas A y B en las heces y las infecciones por Escherichia coli diarreagénicas se pueden diagnosticar mediante la detección por reacción en cadena de la polimerasa de factores de virulencia específicos de los diversos enteropatotipos. Las técnicas utilizadas para el diagnóstico de las gastroenteritis víricas incluyen la detección de antígenos víricos y la detección de sus ácidos nucleicos. Finalmente, las infecciones gastrointestinales que causan los parásitos pueden diagnosticarse mediante la determinación de la presencia de trofozoitos o de quistes de protozoos y de larvas o huevos de helmintos en las heces mediante la utilización del examen microscópico en fresco tras concentración o mediante tinciones específicas.

Abstract
A large proportion of diarrhoeal illnesses in children in developing countries are ascribed to an unknown aetiology because the only available methods, such as microscopy and culture, have low sensitivity. This study was aimed at decreasing the diagnostic gap in diarrhoeal disease by the application of molecular techniques. Faecal samples from 158 children with and 99 children without diarrhoea in a hospital in South India were tested for enteric pathogens using conventional diagnostic methods (culture, microscopy and enzyme immunoassays) and molecular methods (six PCR-based assays). The additional use of molecular techniques increased identification to at least one aetiological agent in 76.5 % of diarrhoeal specimens, compared with 40.5 % using conventional methods. Rotavirus (43.3 %), enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (15.8 %), norovirus (15.8 %) and Cryptosporidium spp. (15.2 %) are currently the most common causes of diarrhoea in hospitalized children in Vellore, in contrast to a study conducted two decades earlier in the same hospital, where bacterial pathogens such as Shigella spp., Campylobacter spp. and enterotoxigenic E. coli were more prevalent. Molecular techniques significantly increased the detection rates of pathogens in children with diarrhoea, but a more intensive study, testing for a wider range of infectious agents and including more information on non-infectious causes of diarrhoea, is required to close the diagnostic gap in diarrhoeal disease.

Abstract
Viral diarrhea remains a major cause of childhood morbidity and mortality worldwide. In Tunisia, no comprehensive studies of all viral agents related to diarrhea in children have yet been conducted. The present study was performed to investigate the role of enteric viruses in acute diarrhea in the country. Six hundred thirty-eight stool samples were collected from children under 5 years of age seeking medical care for acute diarrhea between October 2003 and September 2005 in hospitals from the Eastern-Center Tunisia. All samples were tested for rotavirus, astrovirus, and adenovirus using commercial antigen enzyme immunoassays (EIAs). Positive samples for rotavirus and astrovirus were confirmed by an "in-house" reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Samples positive for adenovirus antigen were subjected to further EIA screening for species F enteric adenovirus types 40 and 41. At least one viral agent was found in 30% of the specimens. The frequency of rotavirus, astrovirus, and adenovirus was 20%, 7%, and 6%, respectively. Of the stool samples containing adenovirus, 57% (20/35) were found to be positive for species F adenovirus types 40/41. Dual infections were found in 9% (17/191) of the positive samples. Enteric viruses appear to play an important role in pediatric diarrhea in Tunisia. The introduction of affordable viral diagnosis in pediatric hospitals will improve patient care by reducing the unnecessary use of antibiotics.

Abstract
We recently established a non-human primate model of rotavirus infection that is characterized by consistent and high levels of virus antigen shedding in stools. Here, we report that starting from post challenge day (PCD) 2, 6 x 10(3) to 1.5 x 10(6) copies of rotavirus double-stranded RNA per nanogram of total RNA were detected by real-time PCR in MA104 cells that were 48 h pre-incubated with filtered stool suspensions of three experimentally infected juvenile macaques. The peak of virus load was detected at PCD 4-5, followed by decreased load at PCD 6-11, and very low levels at PCD 12. Such a pattern corresponded to virus shedding in stools as reported recently based on enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) results. In addition, plasma and cerebrospinal fluids (CSF) from six infected animals were tested for the presence of rotavirus. Rotavirus extraintestinal escape was revealed in three out of six animals by a combination of real-time and nested PCR. However, very low quantities of detected viral RNA (approximately 20 copies/ng of total RNA) were not suggestive of viremia. Thus, the rhesus model of rotavirus infection can be exploited further in studies with vaccine candidates designed to prevent or abrogate rotavirus infection.

Abstract
Background Viral diarrhea remains a major cause of childhood morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although rotavirus was extensively studied in China, few comprehensive studies of all viral agents related to diarrhea in children have been conducted. Objectives Our study was performed to investigate the role of enteric viruses in acute diarrhea in our country and to evaluate methods that could be used in routine diagnostics. Study design One hundred stool samples were collected from children under 5 years of age seeking medical care for acute diarrhea during the winter season 2000/2001 in Beijing Children's Hospital. All specimens were initially screened microscopically for leucocytes/red blood cells. Samples with negative results were analyzed for virus presence using commercial EIAs and/or in-house RT-PCRs. Results At least one viral agent was found in 67% of the specimens. The frequency of rotavirus, astrovirus, norovirus and enteric adenovirus was 59%, 8%, 6% and 2%, respectively. Dual infections were found in 9.0% (6/67) of the positive samples. The results from rotavirus and astrovirus EIAs were concordant with those of rotavirus and astrovirus RT-PCRs. Conclusions Enteric viruses play an important role in pediatric diarrhea during the winter season in China. A combination of microscopic examination of stool samples with specific EIA assays to detect virus antigen in stool specimens may be suitable for routine diagnostics.

The incidence and distribution of human rotavirus G types among children under 5 years old with acute gastroenteritis were determined over a 4-year period (1998 to 2002) by using monoclonal antibodies and reverse transcription-PCR methods. Rotavirus was detected in 1,155 (31%) of 3,760 specimens tested. Rotavirus was studied in every month of the 48-month survey period. Rotavirus activity occurred mainly (51%) in the typically cooler months in Spain (November to February). The age distribution of rotavirus-positive cases showed that 90% of patients (1,038 of 1,155) were under 2 years old. Rotavirus types were determined for 576 of 1,155 patients (50%). G1 was the main genotype detected (53%), and the second most common was G4 (24%). The G2, G9, and G3 rotavirus types were detected in 14, 6, and 2% of the cases, respectively. Dual infections were detected in only 0.6%. The seasonal distribution of genotypes showed a significant genotypic shift: whereas G4 strains predominated (57%) during the 1998 to 2000 seasons, the G1 gradually increased to account for 75% in the 2000 to 2002 seasons. In addition, the present study reports the first detection of the G9 genotype in human fecal samples in Spain. Therefore, additional types may be required for vaccine development strategies that currently target only types G1 to G4.

Abstract
Detection of enteric viral nucleic acids in preserved gorilla fecal specimens was investigated using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rt-PCR). A commercially available viral RNA extraction kit was used to isolate nucleic acids from captive gorilla fecal samples seeded with rotavirus and stored in ethanol, formalin, a commercial RNA preservation solution, guanidine thiocyanate buffer (GT), and samples dried in tubes containing silica gel. Nucleic acids were extracted at 1, 7, 70 and 180 days and used for rt-PCR amplification of specific rotavirus RNA sequences. Successful rt-PCR amplification of the target product varied according to storage conditions, and storage time. Only samples stored in GT gave 100% positive results at 180 days. It is recommended that fecal samples be collected in GT for viral RNA analysis.

Abstract
Acute gastroenteritis is one of the most common diseases in humans worldwide. Viruses are recognized as important causes of this disease, particularly in children. Since the Norwalk virus was identified as a cause of gastroenteritis, the number of viral agents associated with diarrheal disease in humans has steadily increased. Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe diarrhea in children under 5 years of age. Astrovirus, calicivirus and enteric adenovirus are also important etiologic agents of acute gastroenteritis. Other viruses, such as toroviruses, coronaviruses, picobirnaviruses and pestiviruses, are increasingly being identified as causative agents of diarrhea. In recent years, the availability of diagnostic tests, mainly immunoassays or molecular biology techniques, has increased our understanding of this group of viruses. The future development of a safe and highly effective vaccine against rotavirus could prevent, at least, cases of severe diarrhea and reduce mortality from this disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gastroenteritis is one of the most common diseases affecting children and rotavirus is the major etiological agent worldwide. Although the role of rotaviruses as a causal agent of gastroenteritis has been previously established in Argentina, little is known about the frequency of other gastrointestinal viruses. OBJECTIVES The present study was designed to determine the frequency of calicivirus in comparison with rotavirus, astrovirus and adenovirus type 40/41 in our country. STUDY DESIGN Sixty six diarrhea patients (10%) =3 years of age, were randomly selected from a previous series (9/1997-8/1998) and virus frequency determined using RT-PCR and/or commercial EIAs. In addition, we sequenced the RNA polymerase region of calicivirus-positive samples to characterize Argentine strains. RESULTS We detected at least one viral agent in 48.5% (32/66) of the patients. Rotavirus, calicivirus, astrovirus, and enteric adenovirus were found in 17, 16, 5, and 2 children, respectively. Sequence analysis of 4 calicivirus positive samples allowed us to identify a strain clustered to Lorsdale virus, one strain clustered with Manchester virus and two strains clustered with London/92 virus. CONCLUSIONS Our data suggest that calicivirus and rotavirus are major agents of gastroenteritis in children younger than 3 years of age in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Unfortunately, viral diagnosis is seldom available in Argentine hospitals and coproculture results are mostly negative. Our data supports the need to develop rapid and sensitive tests for calicivirus diagnosis. The introduction of affordable viral diagnosis in our pediatric hospitals will improve patient care by reducing the unnecessary use of antibiotics.

Abstract
A total of 614 fecal specimens were obtained during a survey for rotavirus infection conducted between May 1996 and May 1998 among 437 newborns admitted to special care nurseries at a public hospital in the urban area of Belém, Brazil. Routine stool samples were taken weekly from all babies up to the age of 28 days. Overall, 51 (11.7%) of the neonates excreted rotaviruses while in hospital, of whom 42 (82.3%) developed asymptomatic nosocomial infection; nosocomial infection was also proved in five of the nine patients with diarrhea. Three distinct RNA profiles were detected, of which one short electropherotyping pattern was far more frequent ( approximately 90% of the strains). Using monoclonal antibody-based enzyme immunoassays, 32 (62.7%) of the rotavirus-positive strains were classified as G2, and 1 (1.9%) as mixed G1 and G2. A G serotype could not be assigned to 18 (35.3%) of the isolates. A reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was used for determining the VP4 type-specificity of a subset of 28 rotavirus-positive samples. Characterization of the VP7-genotype specificity was also sought for 18 of these latter strains. Overall, P[6] and G2 genotypes were identified in 93% and 94% of tested samples respectively, with results being further confirmed by Southern hybridization. Although surveillance was conducted during a 25-month period, 50 (98%) of 51 rotavirus isolates clustered between January and December 1997. The earliest [P6]G2 rotavirus infections were detected by late January 1997, involving two (13- and 14-day-old) babies admitted with acute diarrhea. Thereafter, strains bearing these genotype specificities were identified among five infants with hospital-acquired gastroenteritis, followed by 16 others who were infected asymptomatically. This is the first report from Brazil describing nosocomial transmission of P[6]G2 rotavirus strains among neonates.

Abstract
A rapid purification method of rotavirus particles to high yield retaining the double shelled structure of infectious virus is described. Group A rotavirus (UK strain) was concentrated through a cushion of colloidal silica (rho=1.10 g/cm(3)) or by precipitating with polyethylene glycol 8000. After concentration, infectious rotavirus was cleared from host cell proteins by density equilibrium centrifugation in gradients of colloidal silica using near vertical rotors. Characterisation of purified virus assessed by electron microscopy and poliacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) revealed the typical wheel shape structure of rotavirus particles and the presence of the 11 segments of dsRNA arranged in the 4-2-3-2 pattern. Presence of rotavirus structural proteins including VP6, VP4 and VP7 from the outer shell, was demonstrated by SDS-PAGE and Western blot using polyclonal and VP6-specific monoclonal antibodies. This method achieved a approximately 1500 fold purification, which retained approximately 80% infectivity depending on the concentration protocol used, while yielding 160 microg of viral protein per each litre of infected cell culture medium. The time required for the isopycnic centrifugation was only 25 min and the entire completion of the method required 3.5 h. The method is simple technically and applicable to the purification of large as well as minute amounts of virus.

Abstract
The outer capsid proteins VP4 and VP7 induce neutralizing antibody against rotavirus. We have investigated in a mouse model the protection mediated by immunization with VP8*, the amino-terminal tryptic fragment of VP4. BALB/c female mice immunized with simian rotavirus SA11 VP6 and VP8* proteins expressed in Escherichia coli were mated with seronegative males. Litters were orally challenged with the SA11 strain (P5B[2], G3) or with the murine rotavirus strain EDIM (P10[16], G3) to verify the degree of protection against diarrhea induced in the newborns. Only those pups born to dams immunized with VP8* did not develop diarrhea after having been orally challenged with the SA11 strain. Pups born to naive dams but foster nursed by VP8*-immunized dams did not develop diarrhea after having been orally infected with the SA11 strain, but they suffered diarrhea when challenged with the EDIM strain. These results support the concepts that (1) VP8* is a highly immunogenic polypeptide that induces effective homotypic protection against disease in pups born to dams immunized with this antigen and (2) in newborn mice the protection against disease is mediated by neutralizing secretory antibodies present in the milk rather than by serum antibodies transferred through the placenta to the offspring.

Abstract
Between September 1996 and May 1999, the incidence and distribution of the main human rotavirus G genotypes (VP7 associated: G1-G4) and P genotypes (VP4 associated: P[8], P[4], P[6] and P[9]) among children with rotavirus gastroenteritis were determined using reverse transcription and polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)-based genotyping methods. From a total of 145 rotavirus strains examined, we identified the G type in 131 (90.3%) and the P type in 127 (87.5%) of the samples. An overall predominance of genotypes P[8] G1 (42.7%) and P[8] G4 (32.4%) was found during the period of study, with much lower incidence of genotypes P[4] G2 (5.5%) and P[8] G3 (2%). P[6] and P[9] types were not detected, neither were unusual combinations of P and G types. A significant genotypic shift was observed: whereas P[8] G4 was the most prevalent genotype during the first year of the study (60%), the genotype P[8] G1 gradually increased to account for 62.3% of the strains analysed in the following winter season. Mixed G types revealing dual infections G1/G4 and G3/G4 were found at low frequency (2%).

Abstract
Specific and sensitive tests for the detection and typing of group A rotavirus strains are needed for a more comprehensive knowledge of the epidemiology of rotaviral infection. In this study 500 stool specimens taken from 1996 to 1998 from children with acute diarrhea in Buenos Aires were examined. Group A rotavirus was unequivocally demonstrated in 62% of the samples tested by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detection of VP6 antigen, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of double-stranded RNA, and reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) for amplification of the VP7:G (1, 062 bp) and VP4:P (876 bp) genes. Only five positive specimens were found by RT-PCR but not by ELISA. G and P typing was carried out by nested amplification of variable sequences of the VP7 and the VP4 genes with six G- and five P-type-specific primers (multiplex PCR). Results obtained by this method showed the prevalence of the following G and P types: G1, 39%; G2, 43%; G4, 4%; P[8], 16%; P[4], 71%. Unexpectedly, the G-P type combination most frequently found was G2P[4] (43%) rather than G1P[8] (12%), which is the most commonly found worldwide. Unusual strains of the type G1P[4] accounted for 14% of the total, while mixed infections with more than one type were found in 10% of the samples. Detection of fecal rotavirus-specific immunoglobulin M (IgM) and IgA antibodies in consecutive samples of two patients taken at daily intervals demonstrated that high levels of IgM and IgA antibodies were detected on day 1 after the onset of disease and that the samples remained positive for about 10 days, after which virus shedding was no longer observed. Multiplex PCR offers a sensitive and specific alternative to determine the prevalence of group A rotavirus G and P types and to identify the emergence of uncommon strains, whereas detection of fecal IgM and IgA antibodies represents a useful supplement to virus detection for the diagnosis of current or recently acquired infections.

Abstract
Psorosis is a widespread and damaging disease of citrus in many parts of the world. The causal agent is a multipartite virus with RNA genome present in very low concentration in infected citrus tissue. Diagnosis is made by biological indexing on indicator citrus seedlings, but it is a slow and costly procedure and therefore it is not used generally. No sensitive wide-spectrum assay for Citrus Psorosis virus (CPsV) has been reported based on RT-PCR. A highly sensitive heminested RT-PCR assay is described for the detection of CPsV. Fragments of 313 bp amplified from RNA 1 of different isolates were cloned and sequenced. Very high homology was found among six isolates from the citrus producing region of Argentina: 96.6-100% in nucleotide sequence. The consensus sequence obtained was used for the design of the primers for heminested PCR assay. It has been tested on different Argentine isolates, employing various methods for RNA extraction from infected tissue. This test is able to detect CPsV in dilutions of 10(10) of the original sample.

Abstract
Rotavirus-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) play an important role in the resolution of rotavirus infection. The outer capsid glycoprotein, VP7, elicits a class I MHC-restricted CTL response. Vaccinia virus recombinants expressing the VP7 genes from simian rotavirus SA11 (serotype G3) and from the RF strain of bovine rotavirus (serotype G6) were used to analyze the CTL activity to this antigen in BALB/c (H-2(d)) and C57BL/6 (H-2(b)) mice neonatally infected with homologous and heterologous rotaviruses. A vaccinia virus recombinant expressing the first amino-terminal 88 amino acids of VP7 was constructed and used to search for cross-reactive CTL against this region of the protein. By using synthetic Kb, Db, and Kd motif-fitting peptides two overlapping CTL epitopes have been identified located in the first hydrophobic domain (H1) of VP7. Splenocytes obtained from rotavirus SA11-infected C57BL/6 mice induced the strongest CTL response against target cells sensitized with a peptide containing a Kb-restricted CTL epitope (amino acids 8-16). A second Kd-restricted epitope (residues 5-13) was recognized by splenocytes derived from rotavirus-infected BALB/c mice. These findings reveal the existence of CTL epitopes in the H1 signal sequence of the VP7 glycoprotein that coexist with a CTL epitope (residues 31-40) previously described within the H2 region.

Abstract
Culture amplification in colon adenocarcinoma cell line (CaCo-2) combined with enzyme immunoassay (Pathfinder ELISA) was developed as a supplementary tool for rotavirus diagnosis. One hundred and thirty stools in which results by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) were in agreement with those obtained by ELISA were amplified in the CaCo-2 cell line. After the first passage 100% specimens were revealed as positive by ELISA. This result was confirmed by PAGE and direct electron microscopy (EM) which increased the rates of rotavirus detection up to 100% after the third and fifth cell passages, respectively. All of the amplified negative stools were confirmed as negative. Among discordant results, three of the eight specimens positive by ELISA but negative by PAGE were confirmed as true positive after the third cell passage. False positive ELISA results could be discarded when the samples were culture amplified and retested by the same ELISA. Using the CaCo-2 amplification-ELISA as supplementary assay, sensitivity and specificity were 1.000 and 0.953 for ELISA and 0.917 and 1.000 for PAGE, respectively. The combined CaCo-2 cell line amplification-immunoassay method proved to be suitable both to evaluate increase in sensitivity of newly developed rotavirus assays and for rotaviral amplification before antigen assays.

Abstract
The prevalence of enteric viruses associated with gastroenteritis was determined in 125 stool samples from patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), with or without diarrhea. Diagnostic assays included enzyme immunoassays for the identification of rotavirus, adenovirus, and Norwalk virus; polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis for atypical rotaviruses and picobirnaviruses and polymerase chain reaction for astrovirus. Enteric viruses were detected in 6.4% (8 of 125) of the stools collected: five (4.0%) samples positive for adenoviruses, and three (2.3%) samples positive for picobirnaviruses were detected. No rotavirus, astrovirus, or Norwalk virus were observed. Only one of the viruses identified (adenovirus) was found in a sample from a patient with diarrhea. Viruses were detected in 10% of the patients with AIDS, 14% of the symptomatic patients, and none of the asymptomatic persons. These results do not support a major role for enteric viruses in the diarrhea suffered by HIV-infected patients.
