Abstract
ObjectivePostoperative glioma patients often experience negative emotions, affecting their treatment adherence and prognosis. The PERMA intervention (focusing on Positive emotions, Engagement, Relationship, Meaning, and Accomplishment) seeks to enhance psychological well-being and quality of life (QoL). This study examines its effects on negative emotions, treatment adherence, and prognosis in postoperative glioma patients.MethodsA total of 124 postoperative glioma patients from January 2022 to February 2024 were randomly assigned to an intervention group (n = 62) or a control group (n = 62). The control group received routine postoperative care, while the intervention group received additional PERMA psychological intervention for 1 month. Assessments included anxiety symptoms (SAS), depressive symptoms (SDS), treatment adherence, complications, and QoL. Prognosis was analyzed using Kaplan-Meier (KM) survival curves.ResultsBaseline characteristics were comparable between groups (P > 0.05). After intervention, both groups showed significant improvements in SAS and SDS scores (P < 0.05), furthermore, post-intervention SAS and SDS scores in the intervention group were significantly lower than those in the control group (P < 0.0001). Treatment adherence was significantly higher, and complication rates were lower in the intervention group compared to control group (P < 0.05). QoL was improved in both groups (P < 0.05), notably, post-intervention, the intervention group scored significantly higher than control group across all QoL domains (P < 0.0001). KM analysis revealed a significant association between the PERMA-based intervention and better prognosis (P < 0.05).ConclusionPERMA-based psychological intervention effectively reduces anxiety and depression, enhances treatment adherence, lowers complication risks, and improves QoL in postoperative glioma patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Managing advanced cancer can be psychologically distressing and burdensome for family caregivers and their care recipients. Innovations in the collection and modelling of passive data from personally-owned smartphones (e.g., GPS), called digital phenotyping, may afford the possibility of remotely monitoring and detecting distress and burden. We explored the potential of using passively-collected GPS data from smartphones to assess and predict caregiver and patient distress and burden. METHODS This exploratory longitudinal cohort study enrolled smartphone-owning family caregiver and patient participants with advanced cancer (August 2021-July 2023) recruited via an oncology clinic or self-referral through Facebook. Participants downloaded a digital phenotyping research app, called Beiwe, that passively collected GPS data for 24 weeks. Participants completed self-report measures (PROs) of anxiety and depressive symptoms (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale [HADS]), mental health (PROMIS Mental Health), and caregiver burden (Montgomery-Borgatta Caregiver Burden scale) at baseline and every 6 weeks for 24 weeks. After pre-processing raw GPS data into daily GPS features (e.g., time spent at home, distance traveled/day), computing biweekly moving averages and standard deviations, and conducting a principal components analysis (PCA) of the resulting variables, within-person regression models were used to assess associations between changes in PRO measures and changes in PCA scores, with adjusted-R2 as the measure of effect size (small = 0.02, medium = 0.13, large = 0.26). RESULTS Evaluable data were collected from 48 participants (family caregivers = 32; patients = 16). Caregiver smartphone data explained small-to-medium variance in caregiver anxiety (0.06), depression (0.15), and mental health (0.07). Patient smartphone data predicted small to medium variance in caregiver depressive symptoms (0.12) and burden (0.05). Combined caregiver and patient smartphone data explained small variance in caregiver depressive (0.02) and anxiety symptoms (0.10) and large variance for PROMIS-mental health (0.36) and burden (0.50). For patient outcomes, caregiver smartphone data accounted for small variance in anxiety symptoms (0.07); patient smartphone data predicted large variance in anxiety symptoms (0.24). Combined data explained medium variance in patient depressive symptoms (0.18). CONCLUSIONS The exploratory study demonstrates the potential predictive utility of using passive smartphone data to detect changes in caregiver and patient psychological distress and burden. A larger study is needed to validate these findings and further explore the clinical application of digital phenotyping in cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sedentary behavior and depressive symptoms are commonly observed in cancer survivors. However, the combined impact of these factors on the mortality outcomes of cancer survivors remains unknown. METHODS Cancer survivors from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (2007-2018) were selected. Multivariate-adjusted Cox regression analyses were employed to examine the intendent and joint prognostic effects of sedentary behavior and depressive symptoms on the mortality outcomes of cancer survivors. RESULTS A total of 2,460 US adult cancer survivors (men = 1,143 and women = 1,317) were included. Severe sedentary behavior (≥ 8 h/day) was linked to higher all-cause [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.68, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.36-2.09, p < 0.001] and noncancer mortality (HR = 1.80, 95% CI: 1.35-2.40, p < 0.001) in cancer survivors. Each additional hour of sedentary time increased the risk of all-cause (HR = 1.05, 95% CI: 1.02-1.08, p < 0.001) and noncancer mortality (HR = 1.07, 95% CI: 1.04-1.11, p < 0.001). Depressive symptoms (PHQ-9 ≥ 5) were also associated with higher all-cause (HR = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.01-1.48, p = 0.040) and noncancer mortality (HR = 1.27, 95% CI: 1.01-1.61, p = 0.045). In the joint analysis, cancer survivors with both depressive symptoms and severe sedentary behavior had the highest risk of all-cause mortality (HR = 2.06, 95% CI: 1.47-2.88, p < 0.001). Survivors with no depressive symptoms but severe sedentary behavior also had a higher risk (HR = 1.44, 95% CI: 1.10-1.88, p = 0.008). Additionally, the combination of depressive symptoms and severe sedentary behavior increased risks of cancer-specific (HR = 1.56, 95% CI: 1.04-2.34, p = 0.001), noncancer (HR = 1.86, 95% CI: 1.34-2.57, p < 0.001), and CMD-related mortality (HR = 1.74, 95% CI: 1.04-2.93, p = 0.037). In subgroup analysis, cancer survivors with endocrine-related and gastrointestinal cancers were more sensitive to these effects. CONCLUSION Our study highlighted the importance of considering both sedentary behavior and mental health in making effective long-term follow-up recommendations for cancer survivors.

Abstract
Aims This ARISE study secondary analysis aims to delve into the complexities of pain management in breast cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy (RT) in Italy. It aims to identify and analyze predictive variables for pain management adequacy and establish the relationship between these variables and the effectiveness of pain control. Materials and methods This observational study engaged 2,104 participants from 13 Italian RT departments, focusing on 426 breast cancer patients reporting pain. Advanced statistical methods, were employed to identify significant predictive variables for pain management adequacy. Data collection involved a standardized form capturing personal, health-related information, specifics about cancer, pain intensity, and medication. The Pain Management Index (PMI) was used to evaluate pain management adequacy, where negative PMI values indicate inadequate or suboptimal pain management. Results The analysis showed that 61.7% of patients experienced inadequate pain management (PMI<0). Factors identified as influencing pain management adequacy included the type of pain, patient age, the objective of RT, and the geographical location of the RT center. Notably, patients undergoing curative RT exhibited a higher incidence of inadequate pain management (PMI<0) compared to those undergoing palliative RT (82.9% versus 31.4%). Geographical variations were evident, with patients treated in northern Italy showing better pain management compared to those in central-southern Italy (72.0% versus 85.6%). Conclusion The ARISE study underscores a significant inadequacy in pain management among breast cancer patients undergoing RT in Italy, influenced by a complex interplay of treatment-related, demographic, and regional factors. The study findings emphasize the need for enhanced, personalized pain management strategies and highlight the importance of considering a multifaceted approach.

Abstract
Background The impact of depression on the physical and psychological well-being of lung cancer patients has raised significant concerns. This study explored lung cancer-related depression research from a bibliometric perspective. Methods Articles and reviews on depression in lung cancer published from 2014 to 2024 in the Web of Science Core Collection were retrieved and identified. The information extracted included "Full Record and Cited References". Bibliometric analysis was conducted using CiteSpace and Excel to examine relevant publications in terms of country, institution, authorship, journal, citations, and keywords. Results A total of 761 publications on depression in lung cancer were identified for analysis, contributed by 4,667 authors from 305 institutions and 58 countries. The annual publication count has steadily increased, culminating in a peak in 2024. China (275 papers), Harvard University (58 publications), and Joseph A. Greer (25 publications) were the most productive and influential country, institution, and author, respectively. Jennifer S. Temel emerges as a highly influential author, securing the second position in terms of both publication count and citation impact. The journal with the highest number of publications is Supportive care in cancer, while the Journal of Clinical Oncology has garnered the most citations. Reference and keyword analysis indicated that the research hotspots mainly included 1) Epidemiology of lung cancer-related depression; 2) The deleterious impact of depression on lung cancer patients, particularly with regards to their quality of life; 3) Association between inflammation and depression in lung cancer; 4) Treatment. Conclusions Our study employed bibliometric analysis to identify prevalent focal areas and emerging trends in the field of research on lung cancer-related depression. Our study found that numerous unanswered questions persist, including the intricate relationship between lung cancer and depression, the profound impact of depression on lung cancer patients, and the interplay between inflammation and depression in this specific population. Furthermore, a current challenge in clinical practice involves the development of secure and more efficacious treatment strategies for individuals with lung cancer-related depression. These findings provide valuable guidance for scholars seeking to explore new avenues of investigation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to map the scientific literature on the effects of auriculotherapy in the treatment of anxiety-fatigue and sleep disturbances in cancer patients, highlighting the main application protocols. METHOD A scoping review was conducted following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines and the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. The search was conducted in twelve data sources by two independent researchers. Publications were included if they were available in full text, with no language or time restrictions. Data were analyzed descriptively, with tables and statistics reporting absolute and relative frequencies. RESULTS The final sample included 16 studies with a total of 669 cancer patients. Of these, 11 were randomized controlled trials published between 2015 and 2022, with a notable concentration in 2019 and 2021. Asian countries were highly represented (62,5 %), followed by Latin America (12,5 %). Breast cancer was the most common tumor type, accounting for 68,75 %. The primary auricular points used were shenmen, followed by heart, subcortex, kidney, and sympathetic. The duration of the protocols ranged from three to eight weeks. The most commonly used materials were needles, seeds, magnetic pellets, and crystal balls. CONCLUSIONS The results of this review highlight the effects of auriculotherapy in the management of anxiety-fatigue and sleep disturbance in cancer patients, demonstrating symptom improvement and benefits that outweigh the minor side effects associated with the procedure.

Abstract
Importance Distress is common among patients with cancer, and evidence of disparities associated with distress has been mixed. Head and neck cancer (HNC) is one of the most emotionally distressing cancers and is also a highly disparate disease. However, it is unknown whether there are disparities associated with patient-reported distress in HNC. Objective To examine racial and sociodemographic factors associated with clinically meaningful distress in a cohort of patients with HNC. Design, Setting, and Participants This retrospective cohort study analyzed data from a single tertiary institution at a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Southeastern US. Participants included adult patients from January 2017 to December 2022 with confirmed diagnoses of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma who received radiation therapy up to 5 weeks from initial diagnosis. Main Outcomes and Measures The outcome of interest was clinically meaningful distress (score of at least 4 on the distress thermometer). The distress thermometer is a single-item, self-reported tool used to measure a person's level of psychological distress over the past week, represented on a scale from 0 (no distress) to 10 (extreme distress). Patients were included in the study if they had visits with clinicians in the radiation oncology department within 5 weeks of diagnosis. Sociodemographic factors were race and ethnicity, age, sex, marital status, and health insurance status. Clinical variables (stage of presentation, anatomical subsites, smoking, and alcohol history) and problem list domain items were included in the adjusted model. Using multivariable logistic regression analysis, odds of meaningful distress by sociodemographic factors were estimated, adjusting for clinical factors and problem list domains. Results A total of 507 patients met the inclusion criteria. The study population included 389 male patients (76.7%). The median (IQR) age of participants was 63 (56-71) years, with a racial distribution of 89 Black patients (17.6%), 385 White patients (75.9%), and 33 patients of other categories (6.9%), including Asian, Native American, multiracial, declined to respond, and unknown. Overall, 232 patients (45.8%) had meaningful distress. The median (IQR) DT score for the entire cohort was 3 (0-6). Black patients had the highest rate of physical concerns (n = 31 [34.8%]) compared to the other racial groups (78 White patients [20.3%] and 7 persons of other race [21.2%]). However, in the final multivariable model, race was not significantly associated with clinically meaningful distress (Black compared with White: adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.76 [95% CI, 0.45-1.28]; other compared with White: aOR, 0.85 [95% CI, 0.37-1.94]). Compared to those married, unmarried patients were significantly more likely to report distress (aOR, 1.61 [95% CI, 1.05-2.50]). Also, patients with emotional problems had double the odds of reporting clinically meaningful distress (aOR, 2.03 [95% CI, 1.02-4.08]). Other factors associated with significant clinical distress included tobacco use (aOR, 2.14 [95% CI, 1.02-4.50]) and reported practical problems (aOR, 2.08 [95% CI, 1.17-3.69]). Conclusion and Relevance Independent of race or sociodemographic factors, the results of this retrospective cohort study underscore the need for social and emotional support in mitigating distress and optimizing mental health care in this patient population. Further studies should explore distress trajectories across the HNC continuum and their impact on HNC outcomes.

Abstract
PURPOSE Depression and anxiety's impact on glioma patient survival lacks consensus. Understanding these effects can highlight the importance of identifying depression and anxiety in glioma patients, and inform future treatments. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to clarify the impact of depression and anxiety on glioma patient survival. METHODS We conducted a systematic literature search of major databases, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science Core Collection, Cochrane Library, and PsycINFO, from inception to June 2023, to identify relevant studies. Eligible studies were those that examined the association between depression, anxiety, or both, and survival outcomes in glioma patients. Data were extracted and analyzed using fixed-effects meta-analysis models to calculate pooled hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS A total of 15 studies met the inclusion criteria, encompassing a diverse range of glioma patients across different clinical settings and stages. The meta-analysis revealed a statistically significant association between depression and reduced overall survival in glioma patients, with a pooled HR of 1.65 (95% CI: 1.41-1.83, 11 studies). The preliminary univariate meta-regression results indicate no impact of individual study characteristics on the effect size. Likewise, anxiety was associated with worse overall survival, with a pooled HR of 1.65 (95% CI: 1.18-2.31, 5 studies). CONCLUSIONS This meta-analysis underscores the vital need to identify and treat depression and anxiety in glioma patients. Future research should explore the underlying mechanisms, aiding the creation of interventions enhancing both mental health and clinical outcomes for this vulnerable group.

Abstract
Cancer and depression are closely interrelated, particularly in patients with advanced cancer, who often present with comorbid anxiety and depression for various reasons. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the study of depression in cancer patients, with the aim of assessing the possible triggers, predictors, adverse events, and possible treatment options for depression in several common cancers. The objective of this narrative review is to synthesize the extant literature on the relationship between the occurrence and progression of depression in several common patient categories. The authors conducted a comprehensive review of 75 articles published in PubMed over the past five years. This review was further evaluated in the present paper. Ultimately, it was determined that depression is a prevalent and detrimental phenomenon among cancer patients, particularly those with advanced disease. Consequently, there is a pressing need to prioritize research and interventions aimed at improving the quality of life and psychosocial well-being of cancer patients, including those with advanced disease. The relationship between cancer and depression has been evolving dynamically in recent times. The current research findings indicate a strong association between cancer and depression. However, the direction of causality remains unclear. Focusing on depression in cancer patients may, therefore, be beneficial for these patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychedelic-assisted therapy refers to a group of therapeutic practices involving psychedelics taken under therapeutic supervision from physicians, psychologists, and others. It has been hypothesised that psychedelic-assisted therapy may reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and existential distress in patients facing life-threatening diseases (e.g. cancer). However, these substances are illegal in most countries and have been associated with potential risks. OBJECTIVES To assess the benefits and harms of psychedelic-assisted therapy compared to placebo or active comparators (e.g. antidepressants) for treatment of anxiety, depression, and existential distress in people with life-threatening diseases. SEARCH METHODS We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, and two trial registers on 30 March 2024. In addition, we undertook reference checking, citation searching, and contact with study authors to identify additional studies. We used no language or date restrictions. SELECTION CRITERIA We included randomised controlled trials (RCTs), with no restrictions regarding comorbidity, sex, or ethnicity. Interventions comprised a substance-induced psychedelic experience preceded by preparatory therapeutic sessions and followed by integrative therapeutic sessions. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS We used the standard methodological procedures expected by Cochrane. MAIN RESULTS We included six studies in the review, which evaluated two different interventions: psychedelic-assisted therapy with classical psychedelics (psilocybin ('magic mushrooms') and lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD)), and psychedelic-assisted therapy with 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA or 'Ecstasy'). The studies randomised 149 participants with life-threatening diseases and analysed data for 140 of them. The age range of participants was 36 to 64 years. The studies lasted between 6 and 12 months, and were conducted in outpatient settings in the USA and in Switzerland. Drug companies were not involved in study funding, but funding was provided by organisations that promote psychedelic-assisted therapy. Primary outcomes (at 1 to 12 weeks) Anxiety Psychedelic-assisted therapy using classical psychedelics (psilocybin, LSD) may result in a reduction in anxiety when compared to active placebo (or low-dose psychedelic): State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-Trait, scale 20 to 80) mean difference (MD) -8.41, 95% CI -12.92 to -3.89; STAI-State (scale 20 to 80) MD -9.04, 95% CI -13.87 to -4.21; 5 studies, 122 participants; low-certainty evidence. The effect of psychedelic-assisted therapy using MDMA on anxiety, compared to placebo, is very uncertain: STAI-T MD -14.70, 95% CI -29.45 to 0.05; STAI-S MD -16.10, 95% CI -33.03 to 0.83; 1 study, 18 participants; very low certainty evidence. Depression Psychedelic-assisted therapy using classical psychedelics (psilocybin, LSD) may result in a reduction in depression when compared to active placebo (or low-dose psychedelic): Beck Depression Inventory (BDI, scale 0 to 63) MD -4.92, 95% CI -8.97 to -0.87; 4 studies, 112 participants; standardised mean difference (SMD) -0.43, 95% CI -0.79 to -0.06; 5 studies, 122 participants; low-certainty evidence. The effect of psychedelic-assisted therapy using MDMA on depression, compared to placebo, is very uncertain: BDI-II (scale: 0 to 63) MD -6.30, 95% CI -16.93 to 4.33; 1 study, 18 participants; very low certainty evidence. Existential distress Psychedelic-assisted therapy using classical psychedelics (psilocybin, LSD) compared to active placebo (or low-dose psychedelic) may result in a reduction in demoralisation, one of the most common measures of existential distress, but the evidence is very uncertain (Demoralisation Scale, 1 study, 28 participants): post treatment scores, placebo group 39.6 (SEM 3.4), psilocybin group 18.8 (3.6), P ≤ 0.01). Evidence from other measures of existential distress was mixed. Existential distress was not measured in people receiving psychedelic-assisted therapy with MDMA. Secondary outcomes (at 1 to 12 weeks) Quality of life When classical psychedelics were used, one study had inconclusive results and two reported improved quality of life, but the evidence is very uncertain. MDMA did not improve quality of life measures, but the evidence is also very uncertain. Spirituality Participants receiving psychedelic-assisted therapy with classical psychedelics rated their experience as being spiritually significant (2 studies), but the evidence is very uncertain. Spirituality was not assessed in participants receiving MDMA. Adverse events No treatment-related serious adverse events or adverse events grade 3/4 were reported. Common minor to moderate adverse events for classical psychedelics were elevated blood pressure, nausea, anxiety, emotional distress, and psychotic-like symptoms (e.g. pseudo-hallucination where the participant is aware they are hallucinating); for MDMA, common minor to moderate adverse events were anxiety, dry mouth, jaw clenching, and headaches. Symptoms subsided when drug effects wore off or up to one week later. Certainty of the evidence Although all six studies had intended to blind participants, personnel, and assessors, blinding could not be achieved as this is very difficult in studies investigating psychedelics. Using GRADE criteria, we judged the certainty of evidence to be low to very low, mainly due to high risk of bias and imprecision (small sample size). AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS Implications for practice Psychedelic-assisted therapy with classical psychedelics (psilocybin, LSD) may be effective for treating anxiety, depression, and possibly existential distress, in people facing a life-threatening disease. Psychedelic-assisted therapy seemed to be well tolerated, with no treatment-emergent serious adverse events reported in the studies included in this review. However, the certainty of evidence is low to very low, which means that we cannot be sure about these results, and they might be changed by future research. At the time of this review (2024), psychedelic drugs are illegal in many countries. Implications for research The risk of bias due to 'unblinding' (participants being aware of which intervention they are receiving) could be reduced by measuring expectation bias, checking blinding has been maintained before cross-over, and using active placebos. More studies with larger sample sizes are needed to reduce imprecision. As the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) currently classifies psychedelics as Schedule I substances (i.e. having no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse), research involving these drugs is restricted, but is steadily increasing.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: The treatment of advanced and metastatic lung cancer is multimodal, and it is coordinated by a multidisciplinary team. Anxiety and depression occur frequently in patients with lung cancer, creating considerable discomfort in therapeutic management. At the same time, these psychoemotional symptoms affect the patients' quality of life. Objective: This research seeks to identify correlations both between anxiety and depression and the patients' performance statuses, as well as between anxiety and depression and the type of treatment: radiotherapy, chemotherapy, tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI), immunotherapy and palliative care. Materials and Methods: The study evaluated 105 patients with lung cancer from two oncologic centers. Patients were assessed for anxiety and depression using the questionnaire Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The HADS is a self-report rating scale of 14 items. It measures anxiety and depression, and has two subscales. There are seven items for each subscale. There are 4-point Likert scale ranging from 0 to 3. For each subscale, the score is the sum of the seven items, ranging from 0 to 21. Results: The most powerful correlation with statistical significance was observed between the IT type of treatment (immunotherapy) and the normal level of anxiety, PC = 0.82 (p < 0.001) as well as the normal level of depression. Palliative treatment was correlated with anxiety and depression, both borderline and abnormal. For ECOG 3-4 performance status and abnormal anxiety, respectively, abnormal depression was significantly associated. Also, continuous hospitalization was associated with abnormal anxiety and depression. Conclusions: Early assessments of anxiety and depression are necessary in patients with advanced and metastatic lung cancer, with unfavorable performance status, who have been admitted to continuous hospitalization, and who require palliative care.

Abstract
Objective Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide, with patients frequently experiencing significant psychological distress, particularly anxiety. Despite the high prevalence of anxiety in patients with cancer, there is limited comprehensive research focusing on the specific factors influencing anxiety in patients with early- and middle-stage lung cancer within the context of Chinese medicine hospitals. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the epidemiology and factors influencing anxiety disorders in patients with early- and middle-stage primary bronchial lung cancer through a cross-sectional study. Methods A total of 340 patients with early and middle-stage lung cancer admitted to the outpatient ward of the oncology department at Guang'anmen Hospital from June 2023 to December 2023 were included in this study. Survey data, including the patients' general condition questionnaire, Generalized Anxiety Scale (GAD-7), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Mental Toughness Scale (CD-RISC-10), were collected and recorded in a database using a two-person input format. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 27.0 software. Results Out of the 340 patients with early- and middle-stage lung cancer included in this study, 133 had anxiety, resulting in an overall anxiety detection rate of 39.12%. The chi-square test showed that statistically significant differences in religion, marital status, surgical treatment, tobacco use, and alcohol history between the anxious and non-anxious groups (p < 0.05). Moreover, statistically significant differences were observed in per capita annual family income, pathological type, VAS score, targeted therapy, treatment stage, and mental toughness level (p < 0.001). Other factors were not significantly correlated with anxiety onset. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that higher per capita family income and completed treatment independently acted as protective factors against anxiety onset in patients with early- and middle-stage lung cancer. Conversely, rare pathological types, increased pain severity, and lower levels of mental toughness were identified as independent risk factors for anxiety onset in these patients. Conclusion Anxiety was prevalent in patients with early- and middle-stage lung cancers. Rare pathological types, increased pain severity, and lower levels of mental toughness were independent risk factors for anxiety. Therefore, clinicians and psychologists should pay more attention to patients with rare types of tumors, actively manage their pain symptoms, and consider implementing mental resilience training to improve patients' mental toughness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Patients with hepatocellular cancer (HCC) are vulnerable to psychological distress given a new cancer diagnosis superimposed on pre-existing chronic liver disease. We aimed to characterise the psychiatric burden in HCC, risk factors for incident diagnosis and treatment patterns over time. METHODS Using IQVIA PharMetrics® Plus for Academics-a nationally representative claims database of the commercially insured US population-we identified psychiatric diagnoses and treatment among patients with newly diagnosed HCC. Multivariable logistic regression modelling identified factors associated with psychiatric diagnosis and treatment. RESULTS Of 11,609 patients with HCC, 2166 (18.6%) had a psychiatric diagnosis after cancer diagnosis with depression (58.3%) and anxiety (53.0%) being most common. Women (aOR 1.33, 95% CI [1.19-1.49]), pre-existing psychiatric diagnoses (aOR 9.12 [8.08-10.3]) and HCC treatment type (transplant: aOR 2.15 [1.66-2.77]; locoregional therapies: aOR 1.74 [1.52-1.99]; hospice: aOR 2.43 [1.79-3.29]) were significantly associated with psychiatric diagnosis. Female sex, ascites, higher comorbidity and treatment type were associated with incident psychiatric diagnosis. Pharmacotherapy was used in 1392 (64.3%) patients with a psychiatric diagnosis, with antidepressants (46.2%) and anxiolytics (32.8%) being most common. Psychiatric diagnoses increased from 14.8% in 2006-2009 to 21.1% in 2018-2021 (p < 0.001). In almost 20% of patients with pre-existing psychiatric conditions, therapy was discontinued after HCC diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS Nearly 2 of 10 patients with HCC were diagnosed with a psychiatric condition after cancer diagnosis with unique sociodemographic and clinical risk factors identified. This highlights a risk for increased psychological burden in need of early evaluation and treatment among patients with newly diagnosed HCC.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Symptoms of cancer-related fatigue (CRF) can have a significant impact on patients' quality of life and treatment adherence. We aimed to investigate the relationship between CRF and multiple psychosocial and somatic indicators within a large mixed cancer sample. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, N = 1787 outpatients with cancer were assessed for CRF, pain, anxiety, and depression using validated screening instruments. We further obtained clinical parameters (Hb, CRP, creatinine, leukocytes, ASAT, and ALAT), sociodemographic data (age, gender, income, education level, marital status, parenthood, and living area), and lifestyle factors. Multivariate linear regression models were applied to estimate the impact of each indicator on CRF. RESULTS Overall, 90.6% of patients experienced some CRF, with 14.8% experiencing severe CRF. No gender difference was found in the prevalence of CRF. Patients with higher levels of pain, depressive symptoms, and lower Hb levels had significantly higher levels of CRF (ps <0.001). Lower levels of CRF were observed in patients who had children (p = 0.03), had less education (p < 0.001), and were physically active for more than 2 h per week before their oncological diagnosis (p = 0.014). The latter was only a significant indicator in the male subsample. CONCLUSION The present results demonstrate a high prevalence of CRF and highlight that not only somatic and psychosocial factors, but also lifestyle factors prior to diagnosis appear to be associated with the etiology and persistence of CRF. To effectively treat CRF, a biopsychosocial, personalized approach is recommended.

Abstract
Patients with hematologic malignancies (HMs) struggle with immense physical and psychological symptom burden, which negatively affect their quality of life (QOL) throughout the continuum of illness. These patients are often faced with substantial prognostic uncertainty as they navigate their illness course, which further complicates their medical decision making, especially at the end of life (EOL). Consequently, patients with HM often endure intensive medical care at the EOL, including frequent hospitalization and intensive care unit admissions, and they often die in the hospital. Our EOL health care delivery models are not well suited to meet the unique needs of patients with HMs. Although studies have established the role of specialty palliative care for improving QOL and EOL outcomes in patients with solid tumors, numerous disease-, clinician-, and system-based barriers prevail, limiting the integration of palliative care for patients with HMs. Nonetheless, multiple studies have emerged over the past decade identifying the role of palliative care integration in patients with various HMs, resulting in improvements in patient-reported QOL, symptom burden, and psychological distress, as well as EOL care. Importantly, these studies have also identified active components of specialty palliative care interventions, including strategies to promote adaptive coping especially in the face of prognostic uncertainty. Future work can leverage the knowledge gained from specialty palliative care integration to develop and test primary palliative care interventions by training clinicians caring for patients with HMs to incorporate these strategies into their clinical practice.

Abstract
The incidence rate of cancer is increasing year by year due to the aging of the population, unhealthy living, and eating habits. At present, surgery and medication are still the main treatments for cancer, without paying attention to the impact of individual differences in health management on cancer. However, increasing evidence suggests that individual psychological status, dietary habits, and exercise frequency are closely related to the risk and prognosis of cancer. The reminder to humanity is that the medical concept of the unified treatment plan is insufficient in cancer treatment, and a personalized treatment plan may become a breakthrough point. On this basis, the concept of "Humanistic Health Management" (HHM) is proposed. This concept is a healthcare plan that focuses on self-health management, providing an accurate and comprehensive evaluation of individual lifestyle habits, psychology, and health status, and developing personalized and targeted comprehensive cancer prevention and treatment plans. This review will provide a detailed explanation of the relationship between psychological status, dietary, and exercise habits, and the regulatory mechanisms of cancer. Intended to emphasize the importance of HHM concept in cancer prevention and better prognostic efficacy, providing new ideas for the new generation of cancer treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Lung cancer surgery patients experience severe physical and mental symptoms, which seriously affect their quality of life and prognosis. Mindful breathing training is a promising strategy to improve their symptoms, but its effectiveness is affected by training compliance, and diary-based rehabilitation instruction has been shown to help improve training compliance. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of mindful breathing training combined with diary-based rehabilitation guidance on improving perioperative outcomes in lung cancer surgery patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS This single-center, assessor-blinded, prospective, three-arm randomized controlled trial was conducted from November 1, 2021 to November 1, 2022. Patients diagnosed with primary non-small cell lung cancer and scheduled for thoracoscopic surgery were randomly allocated to the combined intervention group, the mindful breathing group or the control group, with 34 patients in each group. The control group received routine care, while the mindful breathing group received mindful breathing training and routine care. The combined intervention group received both mindful breathing training and diary-based rehabilitation guidance, along with routine care. RESULTS The per-protocol analysis revealed that patients in the mindful breathing group experienced statistically significant improvements in dyspnea, fatigue and anxiety. Patients in the combined intervention group had statistically significant improvements in dyspnea, fatigue, anxiety, depression, exercise self-efficacy and training compliance. CONCLUSION This study provides evidence that mindful breathing training combined with diary-based rehabilitation guidance can be effective in improving perioperative outcomes in lung cancer patients. It can be applied in clinical practice in the future.

Abstract
CONTEXT Ketamine is a well-characterized anesthetic agent, and subanesthetic ketamine possesses analgesic effects in both acute and chronic pain. OBJECTIVES A systematic review was performed to ascertain the efficacy and safety of ketamine in treating pain for cancer patients. METHODS Eight databases were searched from the inception to March 20th, 2023 to obtain randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on ketamine for treating pain in cancer patients. Two reviewers independently screened studies, extracted the data and assessed the risk of bias of included studies; then, meta-analysis was performed by using Revman 5.3 software and Stata 14.0 software. RESULTS Thirty-five studies were included, involving 2279 patients with cancer pain. The results of meta-analysis showed that ketamine could significantly reduce pain intensity. Subgroup analysis revealed that, when compared with control group, ketamine decreased markedly visual analogue scale (VAS) scores in two days after the end of treatment with ketamine, and ketamine administrated by patient controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA) was effective. Meanwhile, ketamine could significantly reduce the number of patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) compressions within 24 hours and morphine dosage. Ketamine could not decrease Ramsay sedation score. Additionally, the adverse events significantly decreased in the ketamine group, including nausea and vomiting, constipation, pruritus, lethargy, uroschesis, hallucination, and respiratory depression. In addition, compared with the control group, ketamine could reduce Hamilton depression scale (HAMD) score and relieve depressive symptoms. CONCLUSION Ketamine may be used as an effective therapy to relieve cancer pain. However, more rigorously designed RCTs with larger sample sizes are required to verify the above conclusions.

Abstract
PURPOSE The study aimed to describe the long-term trajectories of anxiety and depression among older cancer survivors and examine sociodemographic and health-related predictors of different trajectories. METHODS Data were from the National Health and Aging Trends Study. Patient Health Questionnaire-4 was used to assess anxiety and depression. Group-based trajectory model was used to identify the distinct trajectories of anxiety and depression from 2015 to 2021. Design-based multinomial logistic regression was used to examine predictors of different trajectories. All analyses accounted for the complex sample design and survey weights. RESULTS A total of 1766 older cancer survivors were included representing 8.9 million older cancer survivors. The prevalence of anxiety and depression from 2015 to 2021 ranged from 25.12 to 29.11%. Four trajectories were identified: sustained low-risk (49.0%), deteriorating (24.1%), meliorating (11.0%), and sustained high-risk (16.1%). Potential predictors of high-risk anxiety and depression include older age, female, lower annual income, abnormal BMI, poorer self-rated health, more difficulty in activities of daily living (ADL), and worse cognitive function (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The anxiety and depression progression patterns are heterogeneous among older cancer survivors. The trajectory affiliations could be predicted by sociodemographic and health-related factors, which have the potential to inform targeted clinical strategies (e.g., improve ADL and ameliorate cognitive function). IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS Anxiety and depression are common among older cancer survivors, and long-term trajectories identified by this study might help realize early-stage identification and individualized interventions for mental disorders.

Abstract
Background We aimed to explore the inter-connection between depression and HRQOL dimensions in cancer patients using a network approach, which might provide new insights for precise interventions to improve cancer patients' overall HRQOL. Methods Between June 1, 2016, and August 31, 2017, a total of 1735 eligible patients with heterogeneous types of cancer were recruited. The Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) were used to measure patients' depression status and HRQOL, respectively. A regularized partial correlation network was established. Central and bridge symptoms/functions were identified using expected influence and bridge expected influence. A directed acyclic graph (DAG) was used to explore the possible causal relationship between depression and HRQOL dimensions. Results In this study, depression and 15 dimensions of the EORTC-QLQ-C30 scale were highly inter-correlated and could be represented as a network. We found that nearly two-thirds of cancer patients experienced various degrees of depression, and depression was consistently the central symptom in the network, in addition to nausea/vomiting, pain, and physical function. DAG and bridge symptoms indicated that depression might influence overall HRQOL in cancer patients mainly through emotional function, pain, physical function, and sleeplessness, particularly in cancer patients with moderate-to-severe depression. The disparity in network structures between mild and moderate-to-severe depression suggested that the relationship between depression and HRQOL dimensions might be bidirectional. Conclusion The prevalence of depression remained high in Chinese patients with cancer, and depression may influence various symptoms and functions within the HRQOL network. Screening and early treatment of depression were warranted to improve the overall HRQOL of cancer patients, in addition to adequate treatment of pain and nausea/vomiting and improvement in physical function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammation and nutrition and depression are interrelated, and both are related to changes in mortality rates. We investigated the association of nutritional and inflammation index or depressive symptoms with the risk of all-cause mortality or cause-specific mortality among cancer survivors. METHODS A prospective cohort of a nationally representative sample of cancer survivors, aged 40 years or older (n = 2331; weighted population, 15 248 255; 67.6 ± 11.0 years; 50.6 % males), were recruited from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2005 to 2018. Advanced lung cancer inflammation index (ALI) reflected inflammation and nutritional status and Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9) demonstrated depressive symptoms. The independent and joint associations of ALI and PHQ-9 score with mortality outcomes were examined among cancer survivors and Cox regression analysis based on weights was used to calculate the relative risk. RESULTS We identified 605 all-cause deaths (cancer, 204; non-cancer, 401) over a median of 6.2 years of follow-up (15,385 person-years; interquartile range, 3.3-9.8 years). High ALI was observed to be consistently associated with lower risks of all-cause (hazard ratio [HR], 0.516; 95 % CI, 0.400-0.667) and non-cancer (HR, 0.414; 95 % CI, 0.291-0.588) mortality compared with low ALI in a series of adjusted models. Meanwhile, lower PHQ-9 score (0-4) was associated with lower risks of all-cause (HR, 0.686; 95 % CI, 0.521-0.903) and non-cancer (HR, 0.686; 95 % CI, 0.474-0.992) mortality compared with higher PHQ-9 score (≥10). Furthermore, joint analyses showed that high ALI was associated with a decreased risk of death among cancer survivors who were not depressive. Specifically, survivors with high ALI but not depressive symptoms had the lowest overall (HR, 0.404; 95 % CI, 0.228-0.715) risks. CONCLUSION In this cohort study, we observed impact of nutritional and inflammatory status and depressive symptoms on mortality among cancer survivors, with the lowest risks of death from both all causes and non-cancer being noted among the combination of high level ALI with no depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Living near and enjoying visually green landscapes is associated with better mental health, but evidence focusing on vulnerable populations (such as cancer survivors) is sparse. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between residential greenspace and anxiety and depressive symptoms among cancer survivors in Shanghai, China. METHODS In total, 4195 cancer survivors participated in this study from the 2022 Shanghai Cancer Patient Needs Survey. The estimation of residential greenspaces was based on Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI). The presence and severity of depressive and anxiety symptoms were assessed by using the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-2 (GAD-2). The relation between mental health and green space was assessed using the Generalized Additive Model (GAM) after controlling for relevant individual covariates and contextual characteristics. RESULTS The prevalence of anxiety and depression in cancer survivors was 36.2% and 28.3% respectively. After multivariate adjustment, each increase in inter-quartile range (IQR) for NDVI in the 250 m buffer (NDVI-250m) was associated with a decrease in PHQ-2 score (△score (95%CI): 0.018 (-0.034, -0.002)) and GAD-2 score (△score (95%CI): 0.018 (-0.034, -0.002)), respectively. We observed that an increase in IQR for NDVI-250m was associated with a 3.3% (Odds ratio (OR) (95%CI):0.967 (0.943, 0.991)) reduction in anxiety symptoms. More pronounced greenspace-mental health effects were found among young adults (18-65 years) and participants living in suburban areas, compared to young people over 65 and those living in urban areas (P-interaction < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Higher levels of residential green space are associated with lower risk of depression and anxiety disorders. Our findings will fill the gap in the relationship between green space and mental health among cancer survivors in urban China, and provide new evidence for garden afforestation, community planning and policy-making. To better understand this association, more longitudinal studies are necessary to investigate the mechanisms involved.

Abstract
Introduction Parenteral nutrition (PN) is widely used in palliative care (PC), but there is limited evidence to support its use at the end of life (EOL). This aim of this was to investigate the relationship between routine laboratory parameters and survival in patients receiving PN, and to develop a decision tree model to support clinicians decide whether to start or forgo PN. Methods The laboratory parameters of 113 patients with advanced diseases who were admitted to a specialized palliative care unit (PCU) were analyzed at two points in time: T0 = before PN, T1 = two weeks after initiation of PN. Univariate Mann-Whitney U-tests and multivariate linear regression models, as well as a decision tree analysis were computed; all in relation to survival time. Results The final regression model was significant with p = 0.001 (adjusted R2 = 0.15) and included two predictors for survival time after PN initiation: the CRP/albumin ratio and urea at T1 (ps = 0.019). Decision tree analysis revealed three important predictors for classification of survival time after PN initiation: CRP, urea, and LDH (all at T0). Discussion The decision tree model may help to identify patients likely to benefit from PN, thus supporting the clinical decision whether or not to start PN.

Abstract
Objective We aimed to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on psychological symptom burden against the socioeconomic background of cancer patients using data from routine assessments before and during the pandemic. Method In this cross-sectional study, standardised assessment instruments were applied in N = 1,329 patients to screen for symptoms of anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, and fatigue from 2018 to 2022. Two MANOVAs with post-hoc tests were computed. First, only time was included as predictor to examine the isolated impact of the pandemic. Second, income level and education level were included as further predictors to additionally test the predictive power of socioeconomic factors. Results In the final model, only income had a significant impact on all aspects of psychological symptom burden, with patients with low income being highly burdened (partial η² = .01, p = .023). The highest mean difference was found for depressive symptoms (MD = 0.13, CI = [0.07; 0.19], p < .001). The pandemic had no further influence on psychological distress. Conclusions Although the pandemic is a major stressor in many respects, poverty may be the more important risk factor for psychological symptom burden in cancer outpatients, outweighing the impact of the pandemic.

Abstract
ObjectiveThis study aimed to compare the effects of robot-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS), video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS), and thoracotomy on the psychological status, medical coping mode, and quality of life of patients with lung cancer.MethodsA total of 158 patients with lung cancer were selected from the thoracic surgery center of a third-grade hospital in Hunan Province, China, from September to November 2020. The Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire (MCMQ), and Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) were used to assess the effects of the surgical approaches on the study parameters before and 48–96 h after surgery. The t-test and analysis of variance were used to analyze the data.ResultsThe results revealed that the patients’ depression increased, their short-term quality of life decreased, and they tended to adopt a positive coping mode after surgery (p < 0.05). The RATS and VATS groups differed in avoidance dimension of medical coping modes (p < 0.05). The VATS and thoracotomy groups differed in the body pain dimension of quality of life (p < 0.05). Different surgical approaches had no effect on the psychological status, medical coping modes except the avoidance dimension, and quality of life except the body pain dimension.ConclusionSurgical approaches have little effect on the psychological status, medical coping modes, and quality of life of patients with lung cancer; however, their depression increased and quality of life decreased after the surgery.
