Wearable and Semitransparent Pressure-Sensitive Light-Emitting Sensor Based on Electrochemiluminescence

Logic Signal Amplification System for Sensitive Electrochemiluminescence Detection and Subtype Identification of Cancer Cells

Achieving sensitive detection and accurate identification of cancer cells is vital for diagnosing and treating the disease. Here, we developed a logic signal amplification system using DNA tetrahedron-mediated three-dimensional (3D) DNA nanonetworks for sensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) detection and subtype identification of cancer cells. Specially designed hairpins were integrated into DNA tetrahedral nanostructures (DTNs) to perform a catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) reaction in the presence of target microRNA, forming hyperbranched 3D nanonetworks. Benefiting from the "spatial confinement effect," the DNA tetrahedron-mediated catalytic hairpin assembly (DTCHA) reaction displayed significantly faster kinetics and greater cycle conversion efficiency than traditional CHA. The resulting 3D nanonetworks could load a large amount of Ru(phen)32+, significantly enhancing its ECL signal, and exhibit detection limits for both miR-21 and miR-141 at the femtomolar level. The biosensor based on modular logic gates facilitated the distinction and quantification of cancer cells and normal cells based on miR-21 levels, combined with miR-141 levels, to further identify different subtypes of breast cancer cells. Overall, this study provides potential applications in miRNA-related clinical diagnostics.

Flexible and Stretchable Light-Emitting Diodes and Photodetectors for Human-Centric Optoelectronics

Optoelectronic devices with unconventional form factors, such as flexible and stretchable light-emitting or photoresponsive devices, are core elements for the next-generation human-centric optoelectronics. For instance, these deformable devices can be utilized as closely fitted wearable sensors to acquire precise biosignals that are subsequently uploaded to the cloud for immediate examination and diagnosis, and also can be used for vision systems for human-interactive robotics. Their inception was propelled by breakthroughs in novel optoelectronic material technologies and device blueprinting methodologies, endowing flexibility and mechanical resilience to conventional rigid optoelectronic devices. This paper reviews the advancements in such soft optoelectronic device technologies, honing in on various materials, manufacturing techniques, and device design strategies. We will first highlight the general approaches for flexible and stretchable device fabrication, including the appropriate material selection for the substrate, electrodes, and insulation layers. We will then focus on the materials for flexible and stretchable light-emitting diodes, their device integration strategies, and representative application examples. Next, we will move on to the materials for flexible and stretchable photodetectors, highlighting the state-of-the-art materials and device fabrication methods, followed by their representative application examples. At the end, a brief summary will be given, and the potential challenges for further development of functional devices will be discussed as a conclusion.

A review of nanomaterials for biosensing applications

A biosensor is a device that reacts with the analyte to be analyzed, detects its concentration, and generates readable information, which plays an important role in medical diagnosis, detection of physiological indicators, and disease prevention. Nanomaterials have received increasing attention in the fabrication and improvement of biosensors due to their unique physicochemical and optical properties. In this paper, the properties of nanomaterials such as the size effect, optical and electrical properties, and their advantages in the field of biosensing are briefly summarized, and the application of nanomaterials can effectively improve the sensitivity and reduce the detection limit of biosensors. The advantages of commonly used nanomaterials such as gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), quantum dots (QDs), graphene, and magnetic nanobeads for biosensor applications are also reviewed. Besides, the two main types of biosensors using nanomaterials involved in their construction and their working principles are described, and the toxicity and biocompatibility of nanomaterials and the future direction of nanomaterial biosensors are discussed.

Next-generation of smart dressings: Integrating multiplexed sensors and theranostic functions

Non-healing wounds represent a significant burden for healthcare systems and society, giving rise to severe economic and human issues. Currently, the use of dressings and visual assessment represent the primary and standard care for wounds. Conventional dressings, like cotton gauze, provide only passive physical protection. Besides, they end up paradoxically hampering the wound-healing process by producing tissue damage and pain when removed during routine check-ups. In response to these limitations, researchers, engineers, and technologists are developing innovative dressings that incorporate advanced diagnostic and therapeutic functionalities, coined as "smart dressings". Now, the maturation of smart dressing is bringing them closer to real-life applications, leading to an exciting new generation of these devices. The next generation of smart dressings is capable of monitoring in real-time multiple biomarkers while including pro-healing capabilities in a single platform. Such multiplexed and theranostic smart dressings are expected to offer a timely biomarker-directed diagnosis of non-healing wounds while enabling rapid, automated, and personalized treatments of infection and chronicity. Herein, we provide an insightful overview of these advantageous devices, delving into the diverse spectrum of possible engineering strategies. This encompasses the use of electrochemical and optical platforms with diverse multiplexing architectures, such as multi-zone sensing arrays and multi-layered devices. Open or closed-loop theranostic mechanisms using various stimuli-responsive materials that could be internally or externally controlled are also included. Finally, a critical discussion on the main challenges and future directions of smart dressings is also offered.

Ligand-induced Assembly of Copper Nanoclusters with Enhanced Electrochemical Excitation and Radiative Transition for Electrochemiluminescence

Copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) are emerging electrochemiluminescence (ECL) emitters with unique molecule-like electronic structures, high abundance, and low cost. However, the synthesis of CuNCs with high ECL efficiency and stability in a scalable manner remains challenging. Here, we report a facile gram-scale approach for preparing self-assembled CuNCs (CuNCsAssy ) induced by ligands with exceptionally boosted anodic ECL and stability. Compared to the disordered aggregates that are inactive in ECL, the CuNCsAssy shows a record anodic ECL efficiency for CuNCs (10 %, wavelength-corrected, relative to Ru(bpy)3 Cl2 /tripropylamine). Mechanism studies revealed the unusual dual functions of ligands in simultaneously facilitating electrochemical excitation and radiative transition. Moreover, the assembly addressed the limitation of poor stability of conventional CuNCs. As a proof of concept, an ECL biosensor for alkaline phosphatase detection was successfully constructed with an ultralow limit of detection of 8.1×10-6  U/L.

Humanoid Intelligent Display Platform for Audiovisual Interaction and Sound Identification

This study proposes a rational strategy for the design, fabrication and system integration of the humanoid intelligent display platform (HIDP) to meet the requirements of highly humanized mechanical properties and intelligence for human-machine interfaces. The platform's sandwich structure comprises a middle light-emitting layer and surface electrodes, which consists of silicon elastomer embedded with phosphor and silk fibroin ionoelastomer, respectively. Both materials are highly stretchable and resilient, endowing the HIDP with skin-like mechanical properties and applicability in various extreme environments and complex mechanical stimulations. Furthermore, by establishing the numerical correlation between the amplitude change of animal sounds and the brightness variation, the HIDP realizes audiovisual interaction and successful identification of animal species with the aid of Internet of Things (IoT) and machine learning techniques. The accuracy of species identification reaches about 100% for 200 rounds of random testing. Additionally, the HIDP can recognize animal species and their corresponding frequencies by analyzing sound characteristics, displaying real-time results with an accuracy of approximately 99% and 93%, respectively. In sum, this study offers a rational route to designing intelligent display devices for audiovisual interaction, which can expedite the application of smart display devices in human-machine interaction, soft robotics, wearable sound-vision system and medical devices for hearing-impaired patients.

Soft Human-Machine Interface Sensing Displays: Materials and Devices

The development of human-interactive sensing displays (HISDs) that simultaneously detect and visualize stimuli is important for numerous cutting-edge human-machine interface technologies. Therefore, innovative device platforms with optimized architectures of HISDs combined with novel high-performance sensing and display materials are demonstrated. This study comprehensively reviews the recent advances in HISDs, particularly the device architectures that enable scaling-down and simplifying the HISD, as well as material designs capable of directly visualizing input information received by various sensors. Various HISD platforms for integrating sensors and displays are described. HISDs consist of a sensor and display connected through a microprocessor, and attempts to assemble the two devices by eliminating the microprocessor are detailed. Single-device HISD technologies are highlighted in which input stimuli acquired by sensory components are directly visualized with various optical components, such as electroluminescence, mechanoluminescence and structural color. The review forecasts future HISD technologies that demand the development of materials with molecular-level synthetic precision that enables simultaneous sensing and visualization. Furthermore, emerging HISDs combined with artificial intelligence technologies and those enabling simultaneous detection and visualization of extrasensory information are discussed.

Low-Voltage Stretchable Electroluminescent Loudspeakers with Synchronous Sound and Light Generation

Stretchable sound-in-displays, which can generate synchronous sound and light directly from the display without a separate speaker, allow immersive audio and visual perception even on curved surfaces. In stretchable sound-in-displays, alternating current electroluminescent (ACEL) devices have been used as light-emitting sources owing to their high brightness and stability. However, stretchable ACEL devices that use low dielectric constant (κ) materials require a high operating voltage for generating light and sound. Herein, we demonstrate a stretchable ACEL loudspeaker with a low operating voltage using stretchable high-κ dielectrics and strain-insensitive electrodes. Our device exhibits 87.7 cd/m² of luminance and 79.70 dB of sound pressure level at an operating voltage of 120 V and 10 kHz. As the next platform of wearable devices, the suggested ACEL loudspeaker exhibits high-quality synchronous light and sound generation performance even under various types of mechanical deformation, such as finger flexion and wrist bending.

Mechanochromic Optical/Electrical Skin for Ultrasensitive Dual-Signal Sensing

Following earlier research efforts dedicated to the realization of multifunctional sensing, recent developments of artificial skins endeavor to go beyond human sensory functions by integrating interactive visualization of strain and pressure stimuli. Inspired by the microcracked structure of spider slit organs and the mechanochromic mechanism of chameleons, this work aims to design a flexible optical/electrical skin (OE-skin) capable of responding to complex stimuli with interactive feedback of human-readable structural colors. The OE-skin consists of an ionic electrode combined with an elastomer dielectric layer, a chromotropic layer containing photonic crystals and a conductive carbon nanotube/MXene layer. The electrode/dielectric layers function as a capacitive pressure sensor. The mechanochromic photonic crystals of ferroferric oxide-carbon magnetic arrays embedded in the gelatin/polyacrylamide stretchable hydrogel film perceive strain and pressure stimuli with bright color switching outputs in the full visible spectrum. The underlying microcracked conductive layer is devoted to ultrasensitive strain sensing with a gauge factor of 191.8. The multilayered OE-skin delivers an ultrafast, accurate response for capacitive pressure sensing with a detection limit of 75 Pa and long-term stability of 5000 cycles, while visualizing complex deformations in the form of high-resolution spatial colors. These findings offer deep insights into the rational design of OE-skins as multifunctional sensing devices.

Visual Electrochemiluminescence Biosensor Chip Based on Distance Readout for Deoxynivalenol Detection

Visual electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensors do not need complex instruments or well-trained operators, which is regarded as an ideal choice for portable and low-cost detection. But traditional visual ECL biosensors are based on the change in ECL intensity, which is easily affected by environmental factors and signal acquisition processes. In this work, a visual ECL biosensor chip based on distance readout has been developed for the first time. The chip is composed of a square detection region and a visual channel region, which are modified with graphene oxide (GO) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)@Ti₃C₂ nanocomposites, respectively. Target molecules can release aptamers adsorbed on the GO surface of the detection region and further change the electrode potential of the visual channel region, which can determine the length of the long channel that generates visible ECL signals. The application of AuNPs@Ti₃C₂ nanocomposites can effectively enhance ECL intensity by six times. Through the unique design of the sensor chip, quantification detection can be achieved based on the length change instead of the traditional intensity change. This visual ECL sensor is successfully applied for deoxynivalenol toxin detection in actual samples, demonstrating that the introduction of the distance readout strategy into ECL sensing has a good prospect in on-site testing.

Wearable artificial intelligence biosensor networks

The demand for high-quality healthcare and well-being services is remarkably increasing due to the ageing global population and modern lifestyles. Recently, the integration of wearables and artificial intelligence (AI) has attracted extensive academic and technological attention for its powerful high-dimensional data processing of wearable biosensing networks. This work reviews the recent developments in AI-assisted wearable biosensing devices in disease diagnostics and fatigue monitoring demonstrating the trend towards personalised medicine with highly efficient, cost-effective, and accurate point-of-care diagnosis by finding hidden patterns in biosensing data and detecting abnormalities. The reliability of adaptive learning and synthetic data and data privacy still need further investigation to realise personalised medicine in the next decade. Due to the worldwide popularity of smartphones, they have been utilised for sensor readout, wireless data transfer, data processing and storage, result display, and cloud server communication leading to the development of smartphone-based biosensing systems. The recent advances have demonstrated a promising future for the healthcare system because of the increasing data processing power, transfer efficiency and storage capacity and diversifying functionalities.

Enhancing Electrochemiluminescence Efficiency through Introducing Atomically Dispersed Ruthenium in Nickel-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

The successful application of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) in various fields required continuous exploration of novel ECL signal emitters. In this work, we have proposed a pristine ECL luminophor named NiRu MOFs, which owned extremely high and stable ECL transmission efficiency and was synthesized via a straightforward two-step hydrothermal pathway. The foundation framework of pure Ni-MOFs with the initial structure was layered-pillared constructed by the coordinated octahedrally divalent between nickel and terephthalic acid (BDC). The terephthalates were coordinated and pillared directly to the nickel hydroxide layers and the three-dimensional framework was formed, which had a weak ECL response strength. Then, the ruthenium pyridine complex was recombined with pure Ni-MOFs to produce NiRu MOFs and part of the introduced ruthenium was atomically dispersed in the layered-pillared structure through an ion-exchange method, which led to the ECL luminous efficiency being significantly boosted more than pure Ni-MOFs. In order to verify the superiority of this newly synthesized illuminant, an ECL immunoassay model has been designed, and the results demonstrated that it had extremely strong and steady signal output in practical application. This study realized an efficient platform in ECL immunoassay application with the limit of detection of 0.32 pg mL^-1 for neuron-specific enolase (NSE). Therefore, the approach which combined the pristine pure Ni-MOFs and the star-illuminant ruthenium pyridine complex would provide a convenient and meaningful solution for exploring the next-generation ECL emitters.

Early Notice Pointer, an IoT-like Platform for Point-of-Care Feet and Body Balance Screening

Improper foot biomechanics associated with uneven bodyweight distribution contribute to impaired balance and fall risks. There is a need to complete the panel of commercially available devices for the self-measurement of BMI, fat, muscle, bone, weight, and hydration with one that measures weight-shifting at home as a pre-specialist assessment system. This paper reports the development of the Early Notice Pointer (ENP), a user-friendly screening device based on weighing scale technology. The ENP is designed to be used at home to provide a graphic indication and customised and evidence-based foot and posture triage. The device electronically detects and maps the bodyweight and distinct load distributions on the main areas of the feet: forefoot and rearfoot. The developed platform also presents features that assess the user's balance, and the results are displayed as a simple numerical report and map. The technology supports data display on mobile phones and accommodates multiple measurements for monitoring. Therefore, the evaluation could be done at non-specialist and professional levels. The system has been tested to validate its accuracy, precision, and consistency. A parallel study to describe the frequency of arch types and metatarsal pressure in young adults (1034 healthy subjects) was conducted to explain the importance of self-monitoring at home for better prevention of foot arch- and posture-related conditions. The results showed the potential of the newly created platform as a screening device ready to be wirelessly connected with mobile phones and the internet for remote and personalised identification and monitoring of foot- and body balance-related conditions. The real-time interpretation of the reported physiological parameters opens new avenues toward IoT-like on-body monitoring of human physiological signals through easy-to-use devices on flexible substrates for specific versatility.

Gel-Based Luminescent Conductive Materials and Their Applications in Biosensors and Bioelectronics

The gel is an ideal platform for fabricating materials for bio-related applications due to its good biocompatibility, adjustable mechanical strength, and flexible and diversified functionalization. In recent decades, gel-based luminescent conductive materials that possess additional luminescence and conductivity simultaneously advanced applications in biosensors and bioelectronics. Herein, a comprehensive overview of gel-based luminescent conductive materials is summarized in this review. Gel-based luminescent conductive materials are firstly outlined, highlighting their fabrication methods, network structures, and functions. Then, their applications in biosensors and bioelectronics fields are illustrated. Finally, challenges and future perspectives of this emerging field are discussed with the hope of inspire additional ideas.

Electrochemiluminescence biosensor for thrombin detection based on metal organic framework with electrochemiluminescence indicator embedded in the framework

Ru(dcbpy)₃²⁺-polyethyleneimine-L-lysine (Ru-PEI-L-lys) had been immobilized on metal organic frameworks (ZIF-8) to form an electrochemiluminescent(ECL) indicator (Ru-PEI-L-lys-ZIF-8). In this ECL indicator, PEI-L-lys is used as a co-reactant. Platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) has been mixed with Ru-PEI-L-lys-ZIF-8 to form a thin film to increase the electron transfer rate and enhanced the ECL response of the system. The prepared material had been characterized carefully and been combined with high selectivity of aptamer to develop a ECL biosensor for thrombin detection. RecJ_f exonuclease (an ssDNA specific exonuclease) assistant target recycling amplification has been adopted to enhance the sensitivity of the system. The ECL response of the system has a linear relationship with logarithm of thrombin concentration in the range of 1 fM to 10 pM with a detection limit of 0.02 aM. This work not only provides a new strategy for the design and synthesis of high performance and stable ECL indicator, but also opens up a new approach for the development of highly sensitive ECL sensors for biological analysis.

Porous Ion Gel: A Versatile Ionotronic Sensory Platform for High-Performance, Wearable Ionoskins with Electrical and Optical Dual Output

The development of elastic ionic conductors offers opportunities to fabricate key wearable ionic components such as ionoskins that can perceive mechanical deformation. However, there is still plenty of room to overcome the trade-off between sensitivity and detectable range of previous systems and impart additional functionality. Here, we propose porous ion gels for high-performance, functional ionic sensory platforms. The porous ion gels can be effectively deformed by closing pores even with a small pressure, and a large change in the contact area of the gel and the electrode is induced, leading to a significant difference in electrical double-layer capacitance. The porous ion gels are applied to ionoskins after optimizing mechanical characteristics by adjusting gel parameters. The device indicates a high sensitivity of ∼152.8 kPa^-1, a broad sensory pressure range (up to 400 kPa), and excellent durability (>6000 cycles). Successful monitoring of various human motions that induce different magnitudes of pressure is demonstrated with high precision. More interestingly, the functionality of the porous ion gel is extended to include electrochemiluminescence (ECL), resulting in the production of emissive ECL ionoskins. The ECL intensity from the emissive ionoskin is linearly correlated with the applied pressure, which can even be inferred even by the naked eye. The porous ion gel-based functional ionoskins are expected to be key components in future sensory ionotronics.

Self-Photocatalysis Boosted Electrochemiluminescence Signal Amplification via In Situ Generation of the Coreactant

The classic luminol-based electrochemiluminescence (ECL) platform generally suffers from self-decomposition of the coreactant (i.e., H₂O₂) during the reaction process, seriously hampering the luminous signal stability, as well as its practical application. To address this issue, apart from the introduction of complex exogenous species, preoxidation of the luminophore, and electrocatalysis for ECL signal amplification, we proposed a novel ECL model to realize the signal enhancement via in situ self-photocatalytic generation of the coreactant H₂O₂. Interestingly, the luminescence of luminol was simultaneously utilized as the light source to promote the conversation of O₂ to H₂O₂ with the assistance of the photocatalyst resorcinol-formaldehyde resin, which could further improve the luminescence of luminol in turn. In comparison with the traditional case, this new ECL model not only exhibited obvious signal amplification but also efficiently boosted its stability of signal output. To sum up, an exogenous coreactant-free, highly stable ECL platform was obtained via simply integrating the photocatalyst RF and the luminol-based system. This work will not only inspire the design of a new integrated ECL system with a coreactant translator but also provide an ingenious insight for the construction of a new generation of ECL models.

E-Skin: The Dawn of a New Era of On-Body Monitoring Systems

Real-time "on-body" monitoring of human physiological signals through wearable systems developed on flexible substrates (e-skin) is the next target in human health control and prevention, while an alternative to bulky diagnostic devices routinely used in clinics. The present work summarizes the recent trends in the development of e-skin systems. Firstly, we revised the material development for e-skin systems. Secondly, aspects related to fabrication techniques were presented. Next, the main applications of e-skin systems in monitoring, such as temperature, pulse, and other bio-electric signals related to health status, were analyzed. Finally, aspects regarding the power supply and signal processing were discussed. The special features of e-skin as identified contribute clearly to the developing potential as in situ diagnostic tool for further implementation in clinical practice at patient personal levels.

Crystallization-Induced Enhanced Electrochemiluminescence from Tetraphenyl Alkene Nanocrystals for Ultrasensitive Sensing

Organic materials with diverse structures and brilliant glowing colors have been attracting extensive attention in optical electronic devices and electrochemiluminescence (ECL) fields and are currently faced with the issue of low ECL efficiency. Herein, a series of tetraphenyl alkene nanocrystals (TPA NCs) with an ordered molecular structure were synthesized to explore regularities in the crystallization-induced enhanced (CIE) ECL emission effects by altering the number and position of vinyl on the backbone of TPA molecules. Among those TPA NCs, tetraphenyl-1,3-butadiene (TPB) NCs exhibit the brightest ECL emission via a coreactant pathway, with the relative ECL efficiency of up to 31.53% versus the standard [Ru(bpy)₃]²⁺/TEA system, which is thousands of times higher than that of free TPB molecules. The high ECL efficiency of TPB NCs originates from the effective electron transfer of unique J-aggregates on the a axis of the nanocrystals to notably promote radiative transition and the restriction on the free rotation of TPB molecules to further suppress the nonradiative transition, which has exhibited great potential in ultrasensitive biosensing, efficient light-emitting devices, and clear ECL imaging fields. As a proof of concept, since dopamine (DA) can form benzoquinone species by electrochemical oxidation to realize intermediate radical quenching and excited-state quenching on the TPB NCs/TEA system, the TPB NCs with the CIE ECL effect are used to construct an ultrasensitive ECL-sensing platform for the determination of DA with a lower detection limit of 3.1 nM.

Visco-Poroelastic Electrochemiluminescence Skin with Piezo-Ionic Effect

Following early research efforts devoted to achieving excellent sensitivity of electronic skins, recent design schemes for these devices have focused on strategies for transduction of spatially resolved sensing data into straightforward user-adaptive visual signals. Here, a material platform capable of transducing mechanical stimuli into visual readout is presented. The material layer comprises a mixture of an ionic transition metal complex luminophore and an ionic liquid (capable of producing electrochemiluminescence (ECL)) within a thermoplastic polyurethane matrix. The proposed material platform shows visco-poroelastic response to mechanical stress, which induces a change in the distribution of the ionic luminophore in the film, which is referred to as the piezo-ionic effect. This piezo-ionic effect is exploited to develop a simple device containing the composite layer sandwiched between two electrodes, which is termed "ECL skin". Emission from the ECL skin is examined, which increases with the applied normal/tensile stress. Additionally, locally applied stress to the ECL skin is spatially resolved and visualized without the use of spatially distributed arrays of pressure sensors. The simple fabrication and unique operation of the demonstrated ECL skin are expected to provide new insights into the design of materials for human-machine interactive electronic skins.
