Carbon carrier-based rapid Joule heating technology: a review on the preparation and applications of functional nanomaterials

Compared to conventional heating techniques, the carbon carrier-based rapid Joule heating (CJH) method is a new class of technologies that offer significantly higher heating rates and ultra-high temperatures. Over the past few decades, CJH technology has spawned several techniques with similar principles for different application scenarios, including ultra-fast high temperature sintering (UHS), carbon thermal shock (CTS), and flash Joule heating (FJH), which have been widely used in material preparation research studies. Functional nanomaterials are a popular direction of research today, mainly including nanometallic materials, nanosilica materials, nanoceramic materials and nanocarbon materials. These materials exhibit unique physical, chemical, and biological properties, including a high specific surface area, strength, thermal stability, and biocompatibility, making them ideal for diverse applications across various fields. The CJH method is a remarkable approach to producing functional nanomaterials that has attracted attention for its significant advantages. This paper aims to delve into the fundamental principles of CJH and elucidate the efficient preparation of functional nanomaterials with superior properties using this technique. The paper is organized into three sections, each dedicated to introducing the process and characteristics of CJH technology for the preparation of three distinct material types: carbon-based nanomaterials, inorganic non-metallic materials, and metallic materials. We discuss the distinctions and merits of the CJH method compared to alternative techniques in the preparation of these materials, along with a thorough examination of their properties. Furthermore, the potential applications of these materials are highlighted. In conclusion, this paper concludes with a discussion on the future research trends and development prospects of CJH technology.

Fabrication of composite GO/NiFe2O4-MnFe2O4-CoFe2O4 anode material: Toward high performance hybrid supercapacitors

Here, NiFe2O4, MnFe2O4, and CoFe2O4 nanoferrites are prepared by coprecipitation synthesis technique from nickel, manganese, and cobalt chloride precursors. Synthesized nanoferrites are annealed by calcination process at 800°C for 2 h. To produce a novel anode electrode material for asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs), the composite material of GO/NiFe2O4-MnFe2O4-CoFe2O4 is fabricated. Physicochemical aspects of the synthesized nanoferrites are evaluated. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy tests are conducted, respectively. The electrochemical activities are studied by cyclic voltammetry, glavanostatic charge-discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in 2 M KOH as the electrolyte. In three electrode system, the novel GO/NiFe2O4-MnFe2O4-CoFe2O4 electrode displays a high specific capacity of 325 C g-1 and preserves about 99.9% of its initial specific capacity. The GO/NiFe2O4-MnFe2O4-CoFe2O4//GO ASCs device is assembled using GO/NiFe2O4-MnFe2O4-CoFe2O4, GO, and 2 M KOH solution as the positive electrode, negative electrode, and electrolyte, respectively. Significantly, the GO/NiFe2O4-MnFe2O4-CoFe2O4//GO ASCs represent an outstanding energy density of 50.5 W h kg-1 at power density of 2560 W kg-1. Through the long-term charge discharge cycling tests, this ASC device illustrates about 93.7% capacity retention after 3000 cycles. Then, the present study provides the NiFe2O4-MnFe2O4-CoFe2O4 composite nanoferrites as a novel favorable candidate for anode material. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: Simple and green synthesis of magnetic NiCo2O4/NiO/rGO composite nanostructure using natural precursor. Fabricating and designing an efficient semiconductor for degradation ability. NiCo2O4/NiO/rGO nanocomposite with advanced photo elimination catalytic routine. The photocatalytic performance of NiCo2O4/NiO/rGO was surveyed for the degradation of various antibiotics below visible radiation. Efficiency was 92.9% to eliminate tetracycline. We developed a synergetic approach to prepare a novel active material composed of GO/ NiFe2O4-MnFe2O4-CoFe2O4 by a hybrid electrode material. Green synthesis method was accomplished to attain NiCo2O4/NiO/rGO nanocomposite with advanced photo elimination catalytic routine. The oxide nanobundles were prepared with a rapid and eco-friendly method. In order to investigation of the effect of natural precursor, morphology and shape of nanoproducts was compared. NiCo2O4/NiO/rGO nanobundles possess a suitable bandgap in the visible area.

Electrochemical Nanosensor for the Simultaneous Determination of Anticancer Drugs Epirubicin and Topotecan Using UiO-66-NH2/GO Nanocomposite Modified Electrode

In this work, UiO-66-NH2/GO nanocomposite was prepared using a simple solvothermal technique, and its structure and morphology were characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). An enhanced electrochemical sensor for the detection of epirubicin (EP) was proposed, which utilized a UiO-66-NH2/GO nanocomposite-modified screen-printed graphite electrode (UiO-66-NH2/GO/SPGE). The prepared UiO-66-NH2/GO nanocomposite improved the electrochemical performance of the SPGE towards the redox reaction of EP. Under optimized experimental conditions, this sensor demonstrates a remarkable limit of detection (LOD) of 0.003 µM and a linear dynamic range from 0.008 to 200.0 µM, providing a highly capable platform for sensing EP. Furthermore, the simultaneous electro-catalytic oxidation of EP and topotecan (TP) was investigated at the UiO-66-NH2/GO/SPGE surface utilizing differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). DPV measurements revealed the presence of two distinct oxidation peaks of EP and TP, with a peak potential separation of 200 mV. Finally, the UiO-66-NH2/GO/SPGE sensor was successfully utilized for the quantitative analysis of EP and TP in pharmaceutical injection, yielding highly satisfactory results.

Fluorescent Nanocarbons: From Synthesis and Structure to Cancer Imaging and Therapy

Nanocarbons are emerging at the forefront of nanoscience, with diverse carbon nanoforms emerging over the past two decades. Early cancer diagnosis and therapy, driven by advanced chemistry techniques, play a pivotal role in mitigating mortality rates associated with cancer. Nanocarbons, with an attractive combination of well-defined architectures, biocompatibility, and nanoscale dimension, offer an incredibly versatile platform for cancer imaging and therapy. This paper aims to review the underlying principles regarding the controllable synthesis, fluorescence origins, cellular toxicity, and surface functionalization routes of several classes of nanocarbons: carbon nanodots, nanodiamonds, carbon nanoonions, and carbon nanohorns. This review also highlights recent breakthroughs regarding the green synthesis of different nanocarbons from renewable sources. It also presents a comprehensive and unified overview of the latest cancer-related applications of nanocarbons and how they can be designed to interface with biological systems and work as cancer diagnostics and therapeutic tools. The commercial status for large-scale manufacturing of nanocarbons is also presented. Finally, it proposes future research opportunities aimed at engendering modifiable and high-performance nanocarbons for emerging applications across medical industries. This work is envisioned as a cornerstone to guide interdisciplinary teams in crafting fluorescent nanocarbons with tailored attributes that can revolutionize cancer diagnostics and therapy.

Biomass-Derived Carbon Materials for Electrochemical Energy Storage

The environmental impact from the waste disposal has been widely concerned around the world. The conversion of wastes to useful resources is important for the sustainable society. As a typical family of wastes, biomass materials basically composed of collagen, protein and lignin are considered as useful resources for recycle and reuse. In recent years, the development of carbon material derived from biomasses, such as plants, crops, animals and their application in electrochemical energy storage have attracted extensive attention. Through the selection of the appropriate biomass, the optimization of the activation method and the control of the pyrolysis temperatures, carbon materials with desired features, such as high-specific surface area, variable porous framework, and controllable heteroatom-doping have been fabricated. Herein, this review summarized the preparation methods, morphologies, heteroatoms doping in the plant/animal-derived carbonaceous materials, and their application as electrode materials for secondary batteries and supercapacitors, and as electrode support for lithium-sulfur batteries. The challenges and prospects for the controllable synthesis and large-scale application of biomass-derived carbonaceous materials have also been outlooked.

Recent Development on Transition Metal Oxides-Based Core-Shell Structures for Boosted Energy Density Supercapacitors

In recent years, nanomaterials exploration and synthesis have played a crucial role in advancing energy storage research, particularly in supercapacitor development. Researchers have diversified materials, including metal oxides, chalcogenides, and composites, as well as carbon materials, to enhance energy and power density. Balancing energy density with electrochemical stability remains challenging, driving intensified efforts in advancing electrode materials. This review focuses on recent progress in designing and synthesizing core-shell materials tailored for supercapacitors. The core-shell architecture offers advantages such as increased surface area, redox active sites, electrical conductivity, ion diffusion kinetics, specific capacitance, and cyclability. The review explores the impact of core and shell materials, specifically transition metal oxides (TMOs), on supercapacitor electrochemical behavior. Metal oxide choices, such as cobalt oxide as a preferred core and manganese oxide as a shell, are discussed. The review also highlights characterization techniques for assessing structural, morphological, and electrochemical properties of core-shell materials. Overall, it provides a comprehensive overview of ongoing TMOs-based core-shell material research for supercapacitors, showcasing their potential to enhance energy storage for applications ranging from gadgets to electric vehicles. The review outlines existing challenges and future opportunities in evolving TMOs-based core-shell materials for supercapacitor advancements, holding promise for high-efficiency energy storage devices.

The application of plasma technology for the preparation of supercapacitor electrode materials

With the rapidly growing demand for clean energy and energy interconnection, there is an urgent need for rapid and high-capacity energy storage technologies to realize large-scale energy storage, transfer energy, and establish the energy internet. Supercapacitors, which have advantages such as high specific capacitance, fast charging and discharging rates, and long cycle lifetimes, are being widely used in electric vehicles, information technology, aerospace, and other fields. The performance of supercapacitors is crucially dependent on electrode materials. These can be categorized into electric double-layer capacitors and pseudocapacitors, primarily made from carbon and transition metal oxides, respectively. However, effectively monitoring the physicochemical properties of electrode materials during preparation and processing is challenging, which limits the improvement of supercapacitors' performance. Plasma materials preparation technology can effectively affect the materials preparation processing by energetic electrons, ions, free radicals, and multiple effects in plasma, which are easily manipulated by operation parameters. Therefore, plasma material preparation technology is considered a promising method to precisely monitor the physicochemical and electrochemical properties of energy storage materials and has been widely studied. This paper provides an overview of plasma materials preparation mechanisms, and details of the plasma technology application in the preparation of transition metal hybrids, carbon, and composite electrode materials, as well as a comparison with traditional methods. In conclusion, the advantages, challenges, and research directions of plasma materials preparation technology in the field of electrode materials preparation are summarized.

State-of-the-Art Two-Dimensional Metal Phosphides for High Performance Lithium-ion Batteries: Progress and Prospects

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high energy density, long cycle life and safety have earned recognition as outstanding energy storage devices, and have been used in extensive applications, such as portable electronics and new energy vehicles. However, traditional graphite anodes deliver low specific capacity and inferior rate performance, which is difficult to satisfy ever-increasing demands in LIBs. Very recently, two-dimensional metal phosphides (2D MPs) emerge as the cutting-edge materials in LIBs due to their overwhelming advantages including high theoretical capacity, excellent conductivity and short lithium diffusion pathway. This review summarizes the up-to-date advances of 2D MPs from typical structures, main synthesis methods and LIBs applications. The corresponding lithium storage mechanism, and relationship between 2D structure and lithium storage performance is deeply discussed to provide new enlightening insights in application of 2D materials for LIBs. Several potential challenges and inspiring outlooks are highlighted to provide guidance for future research and applications of 2D MPs.

Disclosing Fast Detection Opportunities with Nanostructured Chemiresistor Gas Sensors Based on Metal Oxides, Carbon, and Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

With the emergence of novel sensing materials and the increasing opportunities to address safety and life quality priorities of our society, gas sensing is experiencing an outstanding growth. Among the characteristics required to assess performances, the overall speed of response and recovery is adding to the well-established stability, selectivity, and sensitivity features. In this review, we focus on fast detection with chemiresistor gas sensors, focusing on both response time and recovery time that characterize their dynamical response. We consider three classes of sensing materials operating in a chemiresistor architecture, exposed to the most investigated pollutants, such as NH3, NO2, H2S, H2, ethanol, and acetone. Among sensing materials, we first selected nanostructured metal oxides, which are by far the most used chemiresistors and can provide a solid ground for performance improvement. Then, we selected nanostructured carbon sensing layers (carbon nanotubes, graphene, and reduced graphene), which represent a promising class of materials that can operate at room temperature and offer many possibilities to increase their sensitivities via functionalization, decoration, or blending with other nanostructured materials. Finally, transition metal dichalcogenides are presented as an emerging class of chemiresistive layers that bring what has been learned from graphene into a quite large portfolio of chemo-sensing platforms. For each class, studies since 2019 reporting on chemiresistors that display less than 10 s either in the response or in the recovery time are listed. We show that for many sensing layers, the sum of both response and recovery times is already below 10 s, making them promising devices for fast measurements to detect, e.g., sudden bursts of dangerous emissions in the environment, or to track the integrity of packaging during food processing on conveyor belts at pace with industrial production timescales.

Hydrothermal Carbonization of Cellulose with Ammonium Sulfate and Thiourea for the Production of Supercapacitor Carbon

Doping with heteroatoms is the main method used to enhance energy storage with carbon materials, and polyatomic doping is one of the main challenges. Hydrothermal carbonization of cellulose was performed at 240 °C for 1 h. Ammonium sulfate and thiourea dopants were selected as the sources of inorganic nitrogen and organic nitrogen in the preparation of supercapacitor carbon. The effects of boric acid on the properties of the resulting hydrochar after KOH activation were examined. The results showed that the proportion of functional groups and the specific surface area of the activated hydrochar were reduced by the addition of boric acid, and the formation of micropores was inhibited. The hydrochar obtained from the reaction of cellulose and organic nitrogen compounds had a better pore size distribution and electrochemical properties after activation. The largest specific surface area (952.27 m2/g) was obtained when thiourea was used as the sole dopant. In a three-electrode system, the specific capacitance of the activated hydrochar reached 235.8 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g. After 20,000 charging and discharging cycles at a current density of 10 A/g, the capacitance retention rate was 99.96%. Therefore, this study showed that supercapacitor carbon with good electrochemical properties was obtained by the direct reactions of cellulose with organic nitrogen compounds.

Synthesis and Characterization of Zinc/Iron Composite Oxide Heterojunction Porous Anode Materials for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Environmental pollution caused by the use of fossil fuels is becoming increasingly serious, necessitating the adoption of clean energy solutions. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have attracted great attention due to their high energy density and currently occupy a dominant commercial position. Metal oxide materials have emerged as promising anode materials for the next generation of LIBs, thanks to their high theoretical capacity. However, the practical application of these materials is hindered by their substantial volume expansion during lithium storage and poor electrical conductivity. In this work, a zinc/iron bimetallic hybrid oxide composite, ZnO/ZnFe2O4/NC, is prepared using ZIF-8 as a precursor (ZIF-8, one of the metal organic frameworks). The N-doped porous carbon composite improves the volume change and optimizes the lithium-ion and electron transport. Meanwhile, the ZnFe2O4 and ZnO synergistically enhance the electrochemical activity of the anode through the built-in heterojunction to promote the reaction kinetics at the interface. As a result, the material delivers an excellent cycling performance of 604.7 mAh g-1 even after 300 cycles of 1000 mA g-1. This study may provide a rational design for the heterostructure and doping engineering of anodes for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Preparation, Modification, and Application of Biochar in the Printing Field: A Review

Biochar is a solid material enriched with carbon produced by the thermal transformation of organic raw materials under anoxic or anaerobic conditions. It not only has various environmental benefits including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving soil fertility, and sequestering atmospheric carbon, but also has the advantages of abundant precursors, low cost, and wide potential applications, thus gaining widespread attention. In recent years, researchers have been exploring new biomass precursors, improving and developing new preparation methods, and searching for more high-value and meaningful applications. Biochar has been extensively researched and utilized in many fields, and recently, it has also shown good industrial application prospects and potential application value in the printing field. In such a context, this article summarizes the typical preparation and modification methods of biochar, and also reviews its application in the printing field, to provide a reference for future work.

Photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants by carbon quantum dots functionalized g-C3N4: A review

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) has received much attention due to its unique characteristics of stable physicochemical features, facile preparation, and inexpensive cost. However, the bulk g-C₃N₄ has a weak capacity for pollutant degradation and needs to be modified for real application. Therefore, extensive research has been done on g-C₃N₄, and the discovery of the novel zero-dimensional nanomaterials known as carbon quantum dots (CQDs) provided it with a unique modification option. In this review, the development for the removal of organic pollutants by g-C₃N₄/CQDs was discussed. Firstly, the preparation of g-C₃N₄/CQDs were introduced. Then, the application and the degradation mechanism of g-C₃N₄/CQDs were briefly described. And the discussion of the influencing factors on g-C₃N₄/CQDs' ability to degrade organic pollutants came in third. Finally, the conclusions of photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants by g-C₃N₄/CQDs and future perspectives followed. This review will strengthen the understanding of the photocatalytic degradation of real organic wastewater by g-C₃N₄/CQDs, including their preparation, application, mechanism, and influencing factors.

Design of Microstructure-Engineered Polymers for Energy and Environmental Conservation

With the ever-growing demand for sustainability, designing polymeric materials using readily accessible feedstocks provides potential solutions to address the challenges in energy and environmental conservation. Complementing the prevailing strategy of varying chemical composition, engineering microstructures of polymer chains by precisely controlling their chain length distribution, main chain regio-/stereoregularity, monomer or segment sequence, and architecture creates a powerful toolbox to rapidly access diversified material properties. In this Perspective, we lay out recent advances in utilizing appropriately designed polymers in a wide range of applications such as plastic recycling, water purification, and solar energy storage and conversion. With decoupled structural parameters, these studies have established various microstructure-function relationships. Given the progress outlined here, we envision that the microstructure-engineering strategy will accelerate the design and optimization of polymeric materials to meet sustainability criteria.

Terminal Group-Oriented Self-Assembly to Controllably Synthesize a Layer-by-Layer SnSe2 and MXene Heterostructure for Ultrastable Lithium Storage

Heterostructured materials integrate the advantages of adjustable electronic structure, fast electron/ions transfer kinetics, and robust architectures, which have attracted considerable interest in the fields of rechargeable batteries, photo/electrocatalysis, and supercapacitors. However, the construction of heterostructures still faces some severe problems, such as inferior random packing of components and serious agglomeration. Herein, a terminal group-oriented self-assembly strategy to controllably synthesize a homogeneous layer-by-layer SnSe₂ and MXene heterostructure (LBL-SnSe₂ @MXene) is designed. Benefitting from the abundant polar terminal groups on the MXene surface, Sn²⁺ is induced into the interlayer of MXene with large interlayer spacing, which is selenized in situ to obtain LBL-SnSe₂ @MXene. In the heterostructure, SnSe₂ layers and MXene layers are uniformly intercalated in each other, superior to other heterostructures formed by random stacking. As an anode for lithium-ion batteries, the LBL-SnSe₂ @MXene is revealed to possess strong lithium adsorption ability, the small activation energy for lithium diffusion, and excellent structure stability, thus achieving outstanding electrochemical performance, especially with high specific capacities (1311 and 839 mAh g^-1 for initial discharge and charge respectively) and ultralong cycling stability (410 mAh g^-1 at 5C even after 16 000 cycles). This work conveys an inspiration for the controllable design and construction of homogeneous layered heterostructures.

Enhanced electricity generation and storage by nitrogen-doped hierarchically porous carbon modification of the capacitive bioanode in microbial fuel cells

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) can potentially be utilized for power generation, but their low power density and low energy storage capabilities remain major bottlenecks for their large-scale development. In this research, a simplistic nitrogen-doped hierarchically porous carbon material (HPC-A) was developed through a one-step carbonization and activation process and was successfully hot-pressed on the carbon cloth (CC) substrate. This process fabricates capacitive bioanodes (HPC-A-CC) that can enhance electricity generation and storage in MFCs. The as-prepared HPC-A-CC anode delivered a power density of 2043.6 mW·m^-2 and a cumulative total charge (Q_m) of 426.4 ± 13.4C·m^-2 at each cycle, which was 2.1 and 34.8 times higher than that of the plain CC anode, respectively. This was a result of the hierarchical and interconnected porous structure, improved hydrophilic surface, and increased number of active centers which host the bacteria for enhanced electron transfer. Electrochemical measurements indicated the superior electrochemical activity and capacitive behavior of the HPC-A-CC anode. Furthermore, biofilm analysis revealed that the HPC-A-CC biofilm exhibited higher cell viability and a more uniform spatial distribution. These findings not only demonstrate the potential of HPC-A-CC for power enhancement in MFCs but also provide a feasible solution to the problem of power generation and demand mismatch in MFC applications.

Structurally Tailoring Clay Nanosheets to Design Emerging Macrofibers with Tunable Mechanical Properties and Thermal Behavior

Bio-derived nanomaterials are promising candidates for spinning high-performance sustainable textiles, but the inherent flammability of biomass-based fibers seriously limits their applications. There is still an urgent need to improve fiber flame retardancy while maintaining excellent mechanical performance. Here, inspired by the structural properties of layered nanoclay, we report a novel and efficient strategy to synthesize the strong, super tough, and flame-retardant nanocellulose/clay/sodium alginate (CRS) macrofibers via wet-spinning and directional drying. Benefiting from the precise modulation of arrangement and orientation of nanoclay in macrofibers, the new inorganic structure exhibits excellent mechanical and thermal functional properties. The anisotropic structure contributes to high toughness: the tensile strength was 373.3 MPa and the toughness was 26.92 MJ·m^-3. Remarkably, rectorite nanosheets as a thermal and qualitative insulator significantly improve the flame retardancy of the CRS fibers with a heat release rate as low as 6.07 W/g, thermal conductivity of 90.5 mW/(m·K), and good temperature tolerance (ranging from -196 to 100 °C). This facile and high-efficiency strategy may have great scalability in manufacturing high-strength, super tough, and flame-retardant fibers for emerging biodegradable next-generation artificial fibers.

Metallofullertube: From Tubular Endohedral Structures to Properties

Metallofullertubes are endohedral metallofullerenes with tubular fullerene cage possessing the segment of carbon nanotubes. Metallofullertubes have endohedral metal atom, fullerene cap and nanotube segment. Therefore, it is conceivable that this new kind of molecular materials would bring on many unexpected properties. In recent years, several pioneer metallofullertubes have been successfully reported, such as La₂ @D₅ (450)-C₁₀₀ , Ce₂ @D₅ (450)-C₁₀₀ , Sm₂ @D_3d (822)-C₁₀₄ . Apart from the great effort to synthesize molecules and determine their structures, the physical and chemical properties of metallofullertubes are still waiting to be explored. In this minireview, we revisit the structures of reported metallofullertubes, and then we highlight their electronic and supramolecular properties. Finally, some perspectives for the development of metallofullertubes are also discussed.

Elastic Fibers/Fabrics for Wearables and Bioelectronics

Wearables and bioelectronics rely on breathable interface devices with bioaffinity, biocompatibility, and smart functionality for interactions between beings and things and the surrounding environment. Elastic fibers/fabrics with mechanical adaptivity to various deformations and complex substrates, are promising to act as fillers, carriers, substrates, dressings, and scaffolds in the construction of biointerfaces for the human body, skins, organs, and plants, realizing functions such as energy exchange, sensing, perception, augmented virtuality, health monitoring, disease diagnosis, and intervention therapy. This review summarizes and highlights the latest breakthroughs of elastic fibers/fabrics for wearables and bioelectronics, aiming to offer insights into elasticity mechanisms, production methods, and electrical components integration strategies with fibers/fabrics, presenting a profile of elastic fibers/fabrics for energy management, sensors, e-skins, thermal management, personal protection, wound healing, biosensing, and drug delivery. The trans-disciplinary application of elastic fibers/fabrics from wearables to biomedicine provides important inspiration for technology transplantation and function integration to adapt different application systems. As a discussion platform, here the main challenges and possible solutions in the field are proposed, hopefully can provide guidance for promoting the development of elastic e-textiles in consideration of the trade-off between mechanical/electrical performance, industrial-scale production, diverse environmental adaptivity, and multiscenario on-spot applications.

Coal-Based Semicoke-Derived Carbon Anode Materials with Tunable Microcrystalline Structure for Fast Lithium-Ion Storage

Fast charging capability is highly desired for new generation lithium-ion batteries used in consumer-grade electronic devices and electric vehicles. However, currently used anodes suffer from sluggish ion kinetics due to limited interlayer distance. Herein, the coal-based semicoke was chosen as precursor to prepare cost-effective carbon anodes with high-rate performance through a facile pyrolytic strategy. The evolution of microstructure and its effect on electrochemical performance are entirely studied. The results show that large number of short-ordered defective structures are generated due to the occurrence of turbostatic-like structures when pyrolyzed at 900 °C, which are propitious to large interlayer distance and developed porous structure. High accessible surface area and large interlayer spacing with short-ordered defective domains endow the sample treated at 900 °C under argon (A900) with accelerated ion dynamics and enhanced ion adsorption dominated surface-induced capacitive processes. As a result, A900 delivers high capacity (331.1 mAh g^-1 at 0.1 A g^-1) and long life expectancy (94.8% after 1000 cycles at 1 A g^-1) as well as good rate capability (153.2 mAh g^-1 at 5 A g^-1). This work opens a scalable avenue to fabricating cost-effective, high-rate, and long cycling life carbon anodes.

Organic Small-Molecule Electrodes: Emerging Organic Composite Materials in Supercapacitors for Efficient Energy Storage

Organic small molecules with electrochemically active and reversible redox groups are excellent candidates for energy storage systems due to their abundant natural origin and design flexibility. However, their practical application is generally limited by inherent electrical insulating properties and high solubility. To achieve both high energy density and power density, organic small molecules are usually immobilized on the surface of a carbon substrate with a high specific surface area and excellent electrical conductivity through non-covalent interactions or chemical bonds. The resulting composite materials are called organic small-molecule electrodes (OMEs). The redox reaction of OMEs occurs near the surface with fast kinetic and higher utilization compared to storing charge through diffusion-limited Faraday reactions. In the past decade, our research group has developed a large number of novel OMEs with different connections or molecular skeletons. This paper introduces the latest development of OMEs for efficient energy storage. Furthermore, we focus on the design motivation, structural advantages, charge storage mechanism, and various electrode parameters of OMEs. With small organic molecules as the active center, OMEs can significantly improve the energy density at low molecular weight through proton-coupled electron transfer, which is not limited by lattice size. Finally, we outline possible trends in the rational design of OMEs toward high-performance supercapacitors.

Closed Aromatic Tubes-Capsularenes

In this study, we describe a synthetic method for incorporating arenes into closed tubes that we name capsularenes. First, we prepared vase-shaped molecular baskets 4-7. The baskets comprise a benzene base fused to three bicycle[2.2.1]heptane rings that extend into phthalimide (4), naphthalimide (6), and anthraceneimide sides (7), each carrying a dimethoxyethane acetal group. In the presence of catalytic trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), the acetals at top of 4, 6 and 7 change into aliphatic aldehydes followed by their intramolecular cyclization into 1,3,5-trioxane (¹ H NMR spectroscopy). Such ring closure is nearly a quantitative process that furnishes differently sized capsularenes 1 (0.7×0.9 nm), 8 (0.7×1.1 nm;) and 9 (0.7×1.4 nm;) characterized by X-Ray crystallography, microcrystal electron diffraction, UV/Vis, fluorescence, cyclic voltammetry, and thermogravimetry. With exceptional rigidity, unique topology, great thermal stability, and perhaps tuneable optoelectronic characteristics, capsularenes hold promise for the construction of novel organic electronic devices.

Biopolymers-Derived Materials for Supercapacitors: Recent Trends, Challenges, and Future Prospects

Supercapacitors may be able to store more energy while maintaining fast charging times; however, they need low-cost and sophisticated electrode materials. Developing innovative and effective carbon-based electrode materials from naturally occurring chemical components is thus critical for supercapacitor development. In this context, biopolymer-derived porous carbon electrode materials for energy storage applications have gained considerable momentum due to their wide accessibility, high porosity, cost-effectiveness, low weight, biodegradability, and environmental friendliness. Moreover, the carbon structures derived from biopolymeric materials possess unique compositional, morphological, and electrochemical properties. This review aims to emphasize (i) the comprehensive concepts of biopolymers and supercapacitors to approach smart carbon-based materials for supercapacitors, (ii) synthesis strategies for biopolymer derived nanostructured carbons, (iii) recent advancements in biopolymer derived nanostructured carbons for supercapacitors, and (iv) challenges and future prospects from the viewpoint of green chemistry-based energy storage. This study is likely to be useful to the scientific community interested in the design of low-cost, efficient, and green electrode materials for supercapacitors as well as various types of electrocatalysis for energy production.

An overview on atmospheric carbonaceous particulate matter into carbon nanomaterials: A new approach for air pollution mitigation

Air pollutants consisting of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) poses a major threat to the environment and human health. However, due to their carbonaceous nature, these atmospheric PM can also be used as a precursor for fabrication of high-valued carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) leading to waste to wealth as well as mitigation of air pollution. Over the few years, various results have been reported on different types of physical and chemical methods for the synthesis of CNMs from atmospheric particulate matter with the help of top down and bottom up methods; however, there is a lack of review on these innovative processes and outcome in order to assess their feasibility and suitability for further investigation. This review critically assesses the synthesis, identification, and characterization of different types of CNMs derived from the atmospheric PM. The fascinating fluorescence properties along with the novel multifarious applications of such PM-derived CNMs are also extensively discussed in this review work. This unique review will certainly help to make a new avenue for air pollution mitigation through conversion of PMs in to value added nanomaterials (VNMs) and will boost the research activity in the field of environmental nanotechnology for a cleaner environment.

A Biodegradable Polymer-Based Plastic Chip Electrode as a Current Collector in Supercapacitor Application

Here, we report the performance of a biodegradable polymer-based Plastic chip Electrode (PCE) as a current collector in supercapacitor applications. Its production was evaluated using two redox materials (conducting polymers polyaniline and poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene)) and a layered material, rGO. The conducting polymers were directly deposited over the Eco-friendly PCE (EPCE) using the galvanostatic method. The rGO was prepared in the conventional way and loaded over the EPCE using a binder. Both conducting polymers and rGO showed proper specific capacitance compared to previous studies with regular current collectors. Electrodes were found highly stable during experiments in high acidic medium. The supercapacitive performance was evaluated with cyclic voltammetry, charge–discharge measurements, and impedance spectroscopy. The supercapacitive materials were also characterized for their electrical and microscopic properties. Polyaniline and PEDOT were deposited over EPCEs showing >150 Fg−1 and >120 Fg−1 specific capacitance, respectively, at 0.5 Ag−1. rGO continued to show higher particular capacitance of >250 Fg−1 with excellent charge–discharge cyclic stability. The study concludes that EPCs can be used as promising electrodes for electrical energy storage applications.

Nanographenes and Graphene Nanoribbons as Multitalents of Present and Future Materials Science

As cut-outs from a graphene sheet, nanographenes (NGs) and graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) are ideal cases with which to connect the world of molecules with that of bulk carbon materials. While various top-down approaches have been developed to produce such nanostructures in high yields, in the present perspective, precision structural control is emphasized for the length, width, and edge structures of NGs and GNRs achieved by modern solution and on-surface syntheses. Their structural possibilities have been further extended from "flatland" to the three-dimensional world, where chirality and handedness are the jewels in the crown. In addition to properties exhibited at the molecular level, self-assembly and thin-film structures cannot be neglected, which emphasizes the importance of processing techniques. With the rich toolkit of chemistry in hand, NGs and GNRs can be endowed with versatile properties and functions ranging from stimulated emission to spintronics and from bioimaging to energy storage, thus demonstrating their multitalents in present and future materials science.

Novel and Green Synthesis of Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Cohered Fe3O4 Nanoparticles with Rich Oxygen Vacancies and Its Application

A one-pot and green synthesis methodology was successfully designed to prepare nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) cohered Fe3O4 nanoparticles with rich oxygen vacancies (Fe3O4-OVs/NC). The preparation was achieved via cold-atmospheric-pressure air plasma using Fe2O3 nanoparticles as the only precursor, and pyridine as the carbon and nitrogen source. Systematic characterization results of the as-prepared Fe3O4-OVs/NC confirmed the transition from Fe2O3 to Fe3O4, along with the generation of oxygen vacancies, while preserving the original needle-like morphology of Fe2O3. Moreover, the results indicated the formation of the NC attaching to the surface of the formed Fe3O4 nanoparticles with a weight percent of ~13.6%. The synthesized nanocomposite was further employed as a heterogeneous Fenton catalyst to remove phenol from an aqueous solution. The material has shown excellent catalytic activity and stability, demonstrating a promising application for wastewater treatment.

Nano-Structured Carbon: Its Synthesis from Renewable Agricultural Sources and Important Applications

Carbon materials are versatile in nature due to their unique and modifiable surface and ease of production. Nanostructured carbon materials are gaining importance due to their high surface area for application in the energy, biotechnology, biomedical, and environmental fields. According to their structures, carbon allotropes are classified as carbon nanodots, carbon nanoparticles, graphene, oxide, carbon nanotubes, and fullerenes. They are synthesized via several methods, including pyrolysis, microwave method, hydrothermal synthesis, and chemical vapor deposition, and the use of renewable and cheaper agricultural feedstocks and reactants is increasing for reducing cost and simplifying production. This review explores the nanostructured carbon detailed investigation of sources and their relevant reports. Many of the renewable sources are covered as focused here, such as sugar cane waste, pineapple, its solid biomass, rise husk, date palm, nicotine tabacum stems, lapsi seed stone, rubber-seed shell, coconut shell, and orange peels. The main focus of this work is on the various methods used to synthesize these carbon materials from agricultural waste materials, and their important applications for energy storage devices, optoelectronics, biosensors, and polymer coatings.

Conjugated Metal-Organic Macrocycles: Synthesis, Characterization, and Electrical Conductivity

The dimensional reduction of solids into smaller fragments provides a route to achieve new physical properties and gain deeper insight into the extended parent structures. Here, we report the synthesis of CuTOTP-OR (TOTP^n- = 2,3,6,7-tetraoxidotriphenylene), a family of copper-based macrocycles that resemble truncated fragments of the conductive two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework Cu₃(HHTP)₂ (HHTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene). The planar metal-organic macrocycles self-assemble into ordered nanotubes with internal diameters of ∼2 nm and short interlayer distances of ∼3.20 Å. Strong π-π stacking interactions between macrocycles facilitate out-of-plane charge transport, and pressed pellet conductivities as high as 2(1) × 10^-3 S cm^-1 are observed. Peripheral alkyl functionalization enhances solution processability and enables the fabrication of thin-film field-effect transistor devices. Ambipolar charge transport is observed, suggesting that similar behavior may be operative in Cu₃(HHTP)₂. By coupling the attractive features of metal-organic frameworks with greater processability, these macrocycles enable facile device integration and a more nuanced understanding of out-of-plane charge transport in 2D conductive metal-organic frameworks.

Vertically Aligned Micropillar Arrays Coated with a Conductive Polymer for Advanced Pseudocapacitance Energy Storage

With the development of high-performance supercapacitors, a conductive polymer (CP)-based pseudocapacitance electrode with good electrical conductivity and low processing costs holds a promising application prospect. As the core component of supercapacitors, the CP electrode with adjustable spacing, a high specific surface area, and a faster ion diffusion path has been extensively investigated. Herein, based on accurate top-down photolithography and electropolymerization approaches, we fabricate a CP-coated vertically aligned micropillar array (MPA) electrode. The electrode presents an overwhelming enhanced areal specific capacitance compared with that of a flat configuration, which is partially ascribed to an increased electroactive surface area, two rapid channels for ion diffusion and electron transfer, and enhanced electric field intensity that is provided by the MPA structure. Based on the fabricated CP-based MPA electrode, an asymmetric supercapacitor is assembled with two thiophene derivatives, presenting a high energy density and excellent cycling stability. A supercapacitor system cascading with three asymmetric supercapacitor devices further demonstrates the practical applications by driving the light-emitting diodes. This work provides a good reference for the further development of CP-based energy storage devices with high energy density and superior cycling stability.

Defect-rich CeO2 in a hollow carbon matrix engineered from a microporous organic platform: a hydroxide-assisted high performance pseudocapacitive material

A microporous organic polymer (MOP) was utilized for the engineering of nanoparticulate CeO₂ in a hollow carbon matrix (H-C/CeO₂). After CeO₂ nanoparticles were incorporated into a hollow MOP platform (H-MOP) through the decomposition of cerium acetate, successive carbonization produced H-C/CeO₂. The redox feature of defective CeO₂ in a conductive carbon matrix induced promising pseudocapacitive behavior. In particular, the H-C/CeO₂ showed excellent electrochemical performance in an alkaline electrolyte (KOH), due to the hydroxide ion-assisted redox behavior of defective CeO₂. H-C/CeO₂-3 with an optimized amount of CeO₂ showed specific capacitances of up to 527 (@0.5 A g^-1) and 493 F g^-1 (@1 A g^-1). Even at high current densities of 10 and 20 A g^-1, the H-C/CeO₂-3 maintained high capacitances of 458 and 440 F g^-1, respectively. After 10 000 cycling tests, the H-C/CeO₂-3 retained the 94-95% capacitance of the first cycle.

Electrocatalytic Isoxazoline-Nanocarbon Metal Complexes

We report the synthesis of new carbon-nanomaterial-based metal chelates that enable effective electronic coupling to electrocatalytic transition metals. In particular, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and few-layered graphene (FLG) were covalently functionalized by a microwave-assisted cycloaddition with nitrile oxides to form metal-binding isoxazoline functional groups with high densities. The covalent attachment was evidenced by Raman spectroscopy, and the chemical identity of the surface functional groups was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). The functional carbon nanomaterials effectively chelate precious metals Ir(III), Pt(II), and Ru(III), as well as earth-abundant metals such as Ni(II), to afford materials with metal contents as high as 3.0 atom %. The molecularly dispersed nature of the catalysts was confirmed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (STEM-EDS) elemental mapping. The interplay between the chelate structure on the graphene surface and its metal binding ability has also been investigated by a combination of experimental and computational studies. The defined ligands on the graphene surfaces enable the formation of structurally precise heterogeneous molecular catalysts. The direct attachment of the isoxazoline functional group on the graphene surfaces provides strong electronic coupling between the chelated metal species and the conductive carbon nanomaterial support. We demonstrate that the metal-chelated carbon nanomaterials are effective heterogeneous catalysts in the oxygen evolution reaction with low overpotentials and tunable catalytic activity.

An Ultra-Long-Lived Triplet Excited State in Water at Room Temperature: Insights on the Molecular Design of Tridecafullerenes

Suitably engineered molecular systems exhibiting triplet excited states with very long lifetimes are important for high-end applications in nonlinear optics, photocatalysis, or biomedicine. We report the finding of an ultra-long-lived triplet state with a mean lifetime of 93 ms in an aqueous phase at room temperature, measured for a globular tridecafullerene with a highly compact glycodendrimeric structure. A series of three tridecafullerenes bearing different glycodendrons and spacers to the C60 units have been synthesized and characterized. UV/Vis spectra and DLS experiments confirm their aggregation in water. Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence experiments suggest a different degree of inner solvation of the multifullerenes depending on their molecular design. Efficient quenching of the triplet states by O2 but not by waterborne azide anions has been observed. Molecular modelling reveals dissimilar access of the aqueous phase to the internal structure of the tridecafullerenes, differently shielded by the glycodendrimeric shell.
