Direct observation of the formation and stabilization of metallic nanoparticles on carbon supports

Stabilization of Pd0 by Cu Alloying: Theory-Guided Design of Pd3Cu Electrocatalyst for Anodic Methanol Carbonylation

Electrocatalytic carbonylation of CO and CH3OH to dimethyl carbonate (DMC) on metallic palladium (Pd) electrode offers a promising strategy for C1 valorization at the anode. However, its broader application is limited by the high working potential and the low DMC selectivity accompanied with severe methanol self-oxidation. Herein, our theoretical analysis of the intermediate adsorption interactions on both Pd0 and Pd4+ surfaces revealed that inevitable reconstruction of Pd surface under strongly oxidative potential diminishes its CO adsorption capacity, thus damaging the DMC formation. Further theoretical modeling indicates that doping Pd with Cu not only stabilizes low-valence Pd in oxidative environments but also lowers the overall energy barrier for DMC formation. Guided by this insight, we developed a facile two-step thermal shock method to prepare PdCu alloy electrocatalysts for DMC. Remarkably, the predicted Pd3Cu demonstrated the highest DMC selectivity among existing Pd-based electrocatalysts, reaching a peaked DMC selectivity of 93 % at 1.0 V versus Ag/AgCl electrode. (Quasi) in situ spectra investigations further confirmed the predicted dual role of Cu dopant in promoting Pd-catalyzed DMC formation.

Chemically engineered plasmonic Au-gallium oxide nanocomposites for harsh environment applications: an investigation into thermal and chemical robustness

Enhanced thermal, chemical, and mechanical properties of different metal nanoparticle morphologies integrated with metal oxides have been reported in multiple instances. The chemical and material robustness of metal nanoparticles incorporated surficially and into the bulk of distinct as well as spontaneously formed morphologies of metal oxides through solution-based and microwave-based approaches are investigated in this study. These composites were tested for their chemical and material robustness by exposing films formed on quartz substrates to high temperatures (800 °C) in an air ambient as well as to extreme conditions of pH, often encountered in harsh environment applications such as sensing and catalysis. The changes in the optical properties and crystallinity have been studied using in situ absorption and ex situ X-ray diffraction analyses and electron microscopy. The trends observed with respect to the changes in the plasmonic absorbance were validated theoretically and found to be in reasonable agreement with the experimental data. Confirmations of the phenomena occurring in different morphologies and architectures were thereby corroborated through careful interpretations from experiments and predictions from theoretical models. We, therefore, report a simple solution-based process for achieving engineered harsh environment-compatible nanocomposites through studies specifically tailored for such applications such as catalysis, sensing, energy storage, and enhanced luminescence.

Synergistic vacancy engineering of Co/MnO@NC catalyst for superior oxygen reduction reaction in liquid/solid zinc-air batteries

The pursuit of efficient and economically viable catalysts for liquid/solid-state zinc-air batteries (ZABs) is of paramount importance yet presents formidable challenge. Herein, we synthesized a vacancy-rich cobalt/manganese oxide catalyst (Co/MnO@NC) stabilized on a nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon (NC) nanosphere matrix by leveraging hydrothermal and high-temperature pyrolysis strategy. The optimized Co/MnO@NC demonstrates fast reaction kinetics and large limiting current densities comparable to commercial Pt/C in alkaline electrolyte for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Moreover, the Co/MnO@NC serves as an incredible cathode material for both liquid and flexible solid-state ZABs, delivering impressive peak power densities of 217.7 and 63.3 mW cm-2 and robust long-term stability (459 h), outperforming the state-of-the-art Pt/C and majority of the currently reported catalysts. Research indicates that the superior performance of the Co/MnO@NC catalyst primarily stems from the synergy between the heightened electrical conductivity of metallic Co and the regulatory capacity of MnO on adsorbed oxygen intermediates. In addition, the abundance of vacancies regulates the electronic configuration, and superhydrophilicity facilitates efficient electrolyte diffusion, thereby effectively ensuring optimal contact between the active site and reactants. Besides, the coexisting NC layer avoids the shedding of active sites, resulting in high stability. This work provides a viable approach for designing and advancing high-performance liquid/solid-state ZABs, highlighting the great potential of energy storage technology.

High-entropy engineering with regulated defect structure and electron interaction tuning active sites for trifunctional electrocatalysis

High-entropy alloy nanoparticles (HEANs) possessing regulated defect structure and electron interaction exhibit a guideline for constructing multifunctional catalysts. However, the microstructure-activity relationship between active sites of HEANs for multifunctional electrocatalysts is rarely reported. In this work, HEANs distributed on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (HEAN/CNT) are prepared by Joule heating as an example to explain the mechanism of trifunctional electrocatalysis for oxygen reduction, oxygen evolution, and hydrogen evolution reaction. HEAN/CNT excels with unmatched stability, maintaining a 0.8V voltage window for 220 h in zinc-air batteries. Even after 20 h of water electrolysis, its performance remains undiminished, highlighting exceptional endurance and reliability. Moreover, the intrinsic characteristics of the defect structure and electron interaction for HEAN/CNT are investigated in detail. The electrocatalytic mechanism of trifunctional electrocatalysis of HEAN/CNT under different conditions is identified by in situ monitoring and theoretical calculation. Meanwhile, the electron interaction and adaptive regulation of active sites in the trifunctional electrocatalysis of HEANs were further verified by density functional theory. These findings could provide unique ideas for designing inexpensive multifunctional high-entropy electrocatalysts.

Construction of Hollow Ultrasmall Co3O4 Nanoparticles Immobilized in BN for CO2 Conversion

Rational design and fabrication of metal-organic framework-derived metal oxide (MO) materials featuring a hollow structure and active support can significantly enhance their catalytic activity for specific reactions. Herein, a series of Co3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) immobilized in boron nitride (denoted as Co3O4@BN) with highly open and precisely controllable structures were constructed by an in situ self-assembly method combined with a controlled annealing process. The obtained Co3O4@BN not only possesses a hollow structure but also shows highly dispersed Co3O4 NPs and high loadings of up to 34.3 wt %. Owing to the ultrafine particle size and high dispersity, the optimized Co3O4@BN exhibits high catalytic activity for the cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides under mild conditions (i.e., 100 °C and CO2 balloon), resulting in at least 4.5 times higher yields (99%) of styrene carbonate than that of Co3O4 synthesized by the pristine ZIF-67. This strategy sheds light on the rational design of hollow MO materials for various advanced applications.

Universal and Energy-Efficient Approach to Synthesize Pt-Rare Earth Metal Alloys for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell

Traditional synthesis methods of platinum-rare earth metal (Pt-RE) alloys usually involve harsh conditions and high energy consumption because of the low standard reduction potentials and high oxophilicity of RE metals. In this work, a one-step strategy is developed by rapid Joule thermal-shock (RJTS) to synthesize Pt-RE alloys within tens of seconds. The method can not only realize the regulation of alloy size, but also a universal method for the preparation of a family of Pt-RE alloys (RE = Ce, La, Gd, Sm, Tb, Y). In addition, the energy consumption of the Pt-RE alloy preparation is only 0.052 kW h, which is 2-3 orders of magnitude lower than other reported methods. This method allows individual Pt-RE alloy to be embedded in the carbon substrate, endowing the alloy catalyst excellent durability for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The performance of alloy catalyst shows negligible decay after 20k accelerated durability testing (ADT) cycles. This strategy offers a new route to synthesize noble/non-noble metal alloys with diversified applications besides ORR.

In Situ TEM Characterization and Modulation for Phase Engineering of Nanomaterials

Solid-state phase transformation is an intriguing phenomenon in crystalline or noncrystalline solids due to the distinct physical and chemical properties that can be obtained and modified by phase engineering. Compared to bulk solids, nanomaterials exhibit enhanced capability for phase engineering due to their small sizes and high surface-to-volume ratios, facilitating various emerging applications. To establish a comprehensive atomistic understanding of phase engineering, in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques have emerged as powerful tools, providing unprecedented atomic-resolution imaging, multiple characterization and stimulation mechanisms, and real-time integrations with various external fields. In this Review, we present a comprehensive overview of recent advances in in situ TEM studies to characterize and modulate nanomaterials for phase transformations under different stimuli, including mechanical, thermal, electrical, environmental, optical, and magnetic factors. We briefly introduce crystalline structures and polymorphism and then summarize phase stability and phase transformation models. The advanced experimental setups of in situ techniques are outlined and the advantages of in situ TEM phase engineering are highlighted, as demonstrated via several representative examples. Besides, the distinctive properties that can be obtained from in situ phase engineering are presented. Finally, current challenges and future research opportunities, along with their potential applications, are suggested.

V-O Species-Doped Carbon Frameworks Loaded with Ru Nanoparticles as Highly Efficient and CO-Tolerant Catalysts for Alkaline Hydrogen Oxidation

Efficient and CO-tolerant catalysts for alkaline hydrogen oxidation (HOR) are vital to the commercial application of anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). Herein, a robust Ru-based catalyst (Ru/VOC) with ultrasmall Ru nanoparticles supported on carbon frameworks with atomically dispersed V-O species is prepared elaborately. The catalyst exhibits a remarkable mass activity of 3.44 mA μgPGM, which is 31.3 times that of Ru/C and even 4.7 times higher than that of Pt/C. Moreover, the Ru/VOC anode can achieve a peak power density (PPD) of 1.194 W cm-2, much superior to that of Ru/C anode and even better than that of Pt/C anode. In addition, the catalyst also exhibits superior stability and exceptional CO tolerance. Experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that V-O species are ideal OH- adsorption sites, which allow Ru to release more sites for hydrogen adsorption. Furthermore, the electron transfer from Ru nanoparticles to the carbon substrate regulates the electronic structure of Ru, reducing the hydrogen binding energy (HBE) and the CO adsorption energy on Ru, thus boosting the alkaline HOR performance and CO tolerance of the catalyst. This is the first report that oxophilic single atoms distributed on carbon frameworks serve as OH- adsorption sites for efficient hydrogen oxidation, opening up new guidance for the elaborate design of high-activity catalysts for the alkaline HOR.

The more the better: on the formation of single-phase high entropy alloy nanoparticles as catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction

High entropy alloys (HEAs) are an important new material class with significant application potential in catalysis and electrocatalysis. The entropy-driven formation of HEA materials requires high temperatures and controlled cooling rates. However, catalysts in general also require highly dispersed materials, i.e., nanoparticles. Only then a favorable utilization of the expensive raw materials can be achieved. Several recently reported HEA nanoparticle synthesis strategies, therefore, avoid the high-temperature regime to prevent particle growth. In our work, we investigate a system of five noble metal single-source precursors with superior catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction. Combining in situ X-ray powder diffraction with multi-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy, we address the fundamental question of how single-phase HEA nanoparticles can form at low temperatures. It is demonstrated that the formation of HEA nanoparticles is governed by stochastic principles and the inhibition of precursor mobility during the formation process favors the formation of a single phase. The proposed formation principle is supported by simulations of the nanoparticle formation in a randomized process, rationalizing the experimentally found differences between two-element and multi-element metal precursor mixtures.

Facile synthesis of high-entropy alloy nanoparticles on germanane, Ge nanoparticles and wafers

The unique solid-solution structure and multi-element compositions of high-entropy alloy nanoparticles (HEA NPs) have garnered substantial attention. Various methods have been developed to prepare a diverse array of HEA NPs using different substrates for support and stabilization. In this study, we present a facile surface-mediated reduction method to prepare HEA NPs (AuAgCuPdPt) decorated germanane (HEA NPs@GeNSs), and employ X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to characterize their structure, composition, and morphology. Subsequently, we demonstrate that the HEA NPs can be liberated from the surfaces of GeNSs as freestanding systems via straightforward exposure to UV light. We also explore germanium nanoparticles (GeNPs) as an alternative substrate for HEA NP formation/production, given their similarity to germanane and their Ge-H surface. Finally, we extend our investigation to bulk Ge wafers and demonstrate successful deposition of HEA NPs.

Real-Time Imaging and Quantitative Evolution for Pyrolysis of Carbon Dots-Encapsulated Metal-Organic Frameworks at the Nanoscale by In Situ Environmental Transmission Electron Microscopy

The pyrolysis of metal-organic frameworks (MOF) has been widely used approach to generate hierarchical structures with the corresponding metal, metal carbide, or metal oxide nanoparticles embedded in a porous carbon matrix with a high specific surface area for industrial catalysis, energy storage and transfer, etc. MOF-derived heterogeneous catalysts can be constructed by the encapsulation of carbon dots (CDs) with plenty of hydroxyl and amine groups to enhance the performance of the final product. Controlled formation of metallic carbon structures at the nanoscale, especially matter cycling and transformation on the nanoscale interface, is important for the production of industrial catalysts as well as the research of materials science and engineering progress. However, the mass transfer at the nanoscale during the processing of MOF pyrolysis remains less understood due to the lack of direct observation. Herein, by using in situ environmental transmission electron microscopy, real-time imaging and quantitative evolution of porous carbon decorated with metal species by the pyrolysis of CDs-encapsulated zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 are achieved. The migration of Co, the flow of aggregates, and the growth of carbon nanotubes observed in the nanoscale pyrolysis laboratory working at 600 °C with an air atmosphere are present. Experimental studies based on reduction and oxidation reaction models reveal that the synergistic effect between doped graphite nitrogen and confined Co nanoparticles is beneficial for boosting catalytic performance.

Molecular Thin Films Enable the Synthesis and Screening of Nanoparticle Megalibraries Containing Millions of Catalysts

Megalibraries are centimeter-scale chips containing millions of materials synthesized in parallel using scanning probe lithography. As such, they stand to accelerate how materials are discovered for applications spanning catalysis, optics, and more. However, a long-standing challenge is the availability of substrates compatible with megalibrary synthesis, which limits the structural and functional design space that can be explored. To address this challenge, thermally removable polystyrene films were developed as universal substrate coatings that decouple lithography-enabled nanoparticle synthesis from the underlying substrate chemistry, thus providing consistent lithography parameters on diverse substrates. Multi-spray inking of the scanning probe arrays with polymer solutions containing metal salts allows patterning of >56 million nanoreactors designed to vary in composition and size. These are subsequently converted to inorganic nanoparticles via reductive thermal annealing, which also removes the polystyrene to deposit the megalibrary. Megalibraries with mono-, bi-, and trimetallic materials were synthesized, and nanoparticle size was controlled between 5 and 35 nm by modulating the lithography speed. Importantly, the polystyrene coating can be used on conventional substrates like Si/SiO_x, as well as substrates typically more difficult to pattern on, such as glassy carbon, diamond, TiO_2, BN, W, or SiC. Finally, high-throughput materials discovery is performed in the context of photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants using Au-Pd-Cu nanoparticle megalibraries on TiO₂ substrates with 2,250,000 unique composition/size combinations. The megalibrary was screened within 1 h by developing fluorescent thin-film coatings on top of the megalibrary as proxies for catalytic turnover, revealing Au_0.53Pd_0.38Cu_0.09-TiO₂ as the most active photocatalyst composition.

Rapid Joule Heating Synthesis of Oxide-Socketed High-Entropy Alloy Nanoparticles as CO2 Conversion Catalysts

The unorthodox surface chemistry of high-entropy alloy nanoparticles (HEA-NPs), with numerous interelemental synergies, helps catalyze a variety of essential chemical processes, such as the conversion of CO₂ to CO, as a sustainable path to environmental remediation. However, the risk of agglomeration and phase separation in HEA-NPs during high-temperature operations are lasting issues that impede their practical viability. Herein, we present HEA-NP catalysts that are tightly sunk in an oxide overlayer for promoting the catalytic conversion of CO₂ with exceptional stability and performance. We demonstrated the controlled formation of conformal oxide overlayers on carbon nanofiber surfaces via a simple sol-gel method, which facilitated a large uptake of metal precursor ions and helped to decrease the reaction temperature required for nanoparticle formation. During the rapid thermal shock synthesis process, the oxide overlayer would also impede nanoparticle growth, resulting in uniformly distributed small HEA-NPs (2.37 ± 0.78 nm). Moreover, these HEA-NPs were firmly socketed in the reducible oxide overlayer, enabling an ultrastable catalytic performance involving >50% CO₂ conversion with >97% selectivity to CO for >300 h without extensive agglomeration. Altogether, we establish the rational design principles for the thermal shock synthesis of high-entropy alloy nanoparticles and offer a helpful mechanistic perspective on how the oxide overlayer impacts the nanoparticle synthesis behavior, providing a general platform for the designed synthesis of ultrastable and high-performance catalysts that could be utilized for various industrially and environmentally relevant chemical processes.

Pulsed Light Synthesis of High Entropy Nanocatalysts with Enhanced Catalytic Activity and Prolonged Stability for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The ability to synthesize compositionally complex nanostructures rapidly is a key to high-throughput functional materials discovery. In addition to being time-consuming, a majority of conventional materials synthesis processes closely follow thermodynamics equilibria, which limit the discovery of new classes of metastable phases such as high entropy oxides (HEO). Herein, a photonic flash synthesis of HEO nanoparticles at timescales of milliseconds is demonstrated. By leveraging the abrupt heating and cooling cycles induced by a high-power-density xenon pulsed light, mixed transition metal salt precursors undergo rapid chemical transformations. Hence, nanoparticles form within milliseconds with a strong affinity to bind to the carbon substrate. Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity measurements of the synthesized nanoparticles demonstrate two orders of magnitude prolonged stability at high current densities, without noticeable decay in performance, compared to commercial IrO₂ catalyst. This superior catalytic activity originates from the synergistic effect of different alloying elements mixed at a high entropic state. It is found that Cr addition influences surface activity the most by promoting higher oxidation states, favoring optimal interaction with OER intermediates. The proposed high-throughput method opens new pathways toward developing next-generation functional materials for various electronics, sensing, and environmental applications, in addition to renewable energy conversion.

Exploring Optimal Water Splitting Bifunctional Alloy Catalyst by Pareto Active Learning

Design of bifunctional multimetallic alloy catalysts, which are one of the most promising candidates for water splitting, is a significant issue for the efficient production of renewable energy. Owing to large dimensions of the components and composition of multimetallic alloys, as well as the trade-off behavior in terms of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) overpotentials for bifunctional catalysts, it is difficult to search for high-performance bifunctional catalysts with multimetallic alloys using conventional trial-and-error experiments. Here, an optimal bifunctional catalyst for water splitting is obtained by combining Pareto active learning and experiments, where 110 experimental data points out of 77946 possible points lead to effective model development. The as-obtained bifunctional catalysts for HER and OER exhibit high performance, which is revealed by model development using Pareto active learning; among the catalysts, an optimal catalyst (Pt_0.15 Pd_0.30 Ru_0.30 Cu_0.25 ) exhibits a water splitting behavior of 1.56 V at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 . This study opens avenues for the efficient exploration of multimetallic alloys, which can be applied in multifunctional catalysts as well as in other applications.

Functionalized nanoparticles: Tailoring properties through surface energetics and coordination chemistry for advanced biomedical applications

Significant advances in nanoparticle-related research have been made in the past decade, and amelioration of properties is considered of utmost importance for improving nanoparticle bioavailability, specificity, and catalytic performance. Nanoparticle properties can be tuned through in-synthesis and post-synthesis functionalization operations, with thermodynamic and kinetic parameters playing a crucial role. In spite of robust functionalization techniques based on surface chemistry, scalable technologies have not been explored well. The coordination enhancement via surface functionalization through organic/inorganic/biomolecules material has attracted much attention with morphology modification and shape tuning, which are indispensable aspects in the colloidal phase during biomedical applications. It is envisioned that surface amelioration influences the anchoring properties of nano interfaces for the immobilization of functional groups and biomolecules. In this work, various nanostructure and anchoring methodologies have been discussed, aiming to exploit their full potential in precision engineering applications. Simultaneous discussions on emerging characterization strategies for functionalized assemblies have been made to gain insights into functionalization chemistry. An overview of current advances and prospects of functionalized nanoparticles has been presented, with an emphasis on controllable attributes such as size, shape, morphology, functionality, surface features, Debye and Casimir interactions.

Ultrafast Synthesis of Mo2C-Based Catalyst by Joule Heating towards Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Developing earth-abundant electrocatalysts useful for hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) is critical for electrocatalytic water splitting driven by renewable energy. Molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) with the crystal structure of hexagonal symmetry has been identified to be an excellent HER catalyst due to its platinum-like electronic structure while the synthesis of Mo2C is generally time consuming and energy intensive. Herein, we demonstrated the ultrafast synthesis of a Mo2C-based electrocatalyst with Joule heating at 1473 K for only 6 s. Benefitting from several advantages including efficient catalytic kinetics, enhanced charge transport kinetics and high intrinsic activity, the as-prepared catalyst exhibited drastically enhanced HER performance compared with commercial Mo2C. It showed an overpotential of 288 mV for achieving a current density of −50 mA cm−2 and good stability, which highlighted the feasibility of the Joule heating method towards preparing efficient electrocatalysts.

Ambivalent effects of dissolved organic matter on silver nanoparticles/silver ions transformation: A review

The numerous applications of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) lead to their spread in aquatic systems and the release of silver ions (Ag⁺), which brings potential risks to environment and human health. Owing to the different toxicity, the mutual transformations between AgNPs and Ag⁺ has been a hot topic of research. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is ubiquitous on the earth and almost participates in all the reactions in the nature. The previous studies have reported the roles of DOM played in the transformation between AgNPs and Ag⁺. However, different experiment conditions commonly caused contradictory results, leading to the difficulty to predict the fate of AgNPs in specific reactions. Here we summarized mechanisms of DOM-mediated AgNPs oxidation and Ag⁺ reduction, and analyzed the effects of environmental parameters. Moreover, the knowledge gaps, challenges, and new opportunities for research in this field are discussed. This review will promote the understanding of the fate and risk assessments of AgNPs in natural water systems.

Ultrafast materials synthesis and manufacturing techniques for emerging energy and environmental applications

Energy and environmental issues have attracted increasing attention globally, where sustainability and low-carbon emissions are seriously considered and widely accepted by government officials. In response to this situation, the development of renewable energy and environmental technologies is urgently needed to complement the usage of traditional fossil fuels. While a big part of advancement in these technologies relies on materials innovations, new materials discovery is limited by sluggish conventional materials synthesis methods, greatly hindering the advancement of related technologies. To address this issue, this review introduces and comprehensively summarizes emerging ultrafast materials synthesis methods that could synthesize materials in times as short as nanoseconds, significantly improving research efficiency. We discuss the unique advantages of these methods, followed by how they benefit individual applications for renewable energy and the environment. We also highlight the scalability of ultrafast manufacturing towards their potential industrial utilization. Finally, we provide our perspectives on challenges and opportunities for the future development of ultrafast synthesis and manufacturing technologies. We anticipate that fertile opportunities exist not only for energy and the environment but also for many other applications.

Searching for an Optimal Multi-Metallic Alloy Catalyst by Active Learning Combined with Experiments

Searching for an optimal component and composition of multi-metallic alloy catalysts, comprising two or more elements, is one of the key issues in catalysis research. Due to the exhaustive data requirement of conventional machine-learning (ML) models and the high cost of experimental trials, current approaches rely mainly on the combination of density functional theory and ML techniques. In this study, a significant step is taken toward overcoming limitations by the interplay of experiment and active learning to effectively search for an optimal component and composition of multi-metallic alloy catalysts. The active-learning model is iteratively updated using by examining electrocatalytic performance of fabricated solid-solution nanoparticles for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). An optimal metal precursor composition of Pt_0.65 Ru_0.30 Ni_0.05 exhibits an HER overpotential of 54.2 mV, which is superior to that of the pure Pt catalyst. This result indicates the successful construction of the model by only utilizing the precursor mixture composition as input data, thereby improving the overpotential by searching for an optimal catalyst. This method appears to be widely applicable since it is able to determine an optimal component and composition of electrocatalyst without obvious restriction to the types of catalysts to which it can be applied.

High-entropy nanoparticles: Synthesis-structure-property relationships and data-driven discovery

High-entropy nanoparticles have become a rapidly growing area of research in recent years. Because of their multielemental compositions and unique high-entropy mixing states (i.e., solid-solution) that can lead to tunable activity and enhanced stability, these nanoparticles have received notable attention for catalyst design and exploration. However, this strong potential is also accompanied by grand challenges originating from their vast compositional space and complex atomic structure, which hinder comprehensive exploration and fundamental understanding. Through a multidisciplinary view of synthesis, characterization, catalytic applications, high-throughput screening, and data-driven materials discovery, this review is dedicated to discussing the important progress of high-entropy nanoparticles and unveiling the critical needs for their future development for catalysis, energy, and sustainability applications.

Machine Learning Guided Synthesis of Flash Graphene

Advances in nanoscience have enabled the synthesis of nanomaterials, such as graphene, from low-value or waste materials through flash Joule heating. Though this capability is promising, the complex and entangled variables that govern nanocrystal formation in the Joule heating process remain poorly understood. In this work, machine learning (ML) models are constructed to explore the factors that drive the transformation of amorphous carbon into graphene nanocrystals during flash Joule heating. An XGBoost regression model of crystallinity achieves an r² score of 0.8051 ± 0.054. Feature importance assays and decision trees extracted from these models reveal key considerations in the selection of starting materials and the role of stochastic current fluctuations in flash Joule heating synthesis. Furthermore, partial dependence analyses demonstrate the importance of charge and current density as predictors of crystallinity, implying a progression from reaction-limited to diffusion-limited kinetics as flash Joule heating parameters change. Finally, a practical application of the ML models is shown by using Bayesian meta-learning algorithms to automatically improve bulk crystallinity over many Joule heating reactions. These results illustrate the power of ML as a tool to analyze complex nanomanufacturing processes and enable the synthesis of 2D crystals with desirable properties by flash Joule heating.

Immobilization of Gold Nanoparticles in Spherical Polymer Brushes Observed by Small-Angle X-ray Scattering

Nanosized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are of great interest in areas such as catalysts or imaging but are easy to aggregate due to high surface activity. To stabilize AuNPs, two approaches were employed to immobilize AuNPs in spherical polymer brushes (SPBs), namely, the in situ preparation of AuNPs within the brush layer of SPBs and external addition of preprepared citrate-capped AuNPs. The distribution and stability of AuNPs in SPBs were studied by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). SAXS results demonstrated that the in situ-prepared AuNPs were mainly located on the inner layer and their amount decreased from inside to outside. In the case of external addition of preprepared AuNPs, the cationic SPB showed obvious immobilization, while almost no AuNPs were immobilized in the anionic SPB. The stable immobilization of the AuNPs in SPBs was the result of multiple interactions including complexation and electrostatic interaction. SAXS was validated to be a distinctive and powerful characterization method to provide theoretical guidance for the stable immobilization of AuNPs.

Noble Metal-Based Multimetallic Nanoparticles for Electrocatalytic Applications

Noble metal-based multimetallic nanoparticles (NMMNs) have attracted great attention for their multifunctional and synergistic effects, which offer numerous catalytic applications. Combined experimental and theoretical studies have enabled formulation of various design principles for tuning the electrocatalytic performance through controlling size, composition, morphology, and crystal structure of the nanoparticles. Despite significant advancements in the field, the chemical synthesis of NMMNs with ideal characteristics for catalysis, including high activity, stability, product-selectivity, and scalability is still challenging. This review provides an overview on structure-based classification and the general synthesis of NMMN electrocatalysts. Furthermore, postsynthetic treatments, such as the removal of surfactants to optimize the activity, and utilization of NMMNs onto suitable support for practical electrocatalytic applications are highlighted. In the end, future direction and challenges associated with the electrocatalysis of NMMNs are covered.

Generation of high-density nanoparticles in the carbothermal shock method

The carbothermal shock (CTS) method has attracted considerable attention in recent years because it enables the generation of finely controlled polyelemental alloy nanoparticles (NPs). However, fabricating high surface coverage of NPs with minimized exposure of the carbon substrate is essential for various electrochemical applications and has been a critical limitation in CTS method. Here, we developed a methodology for creating NPs with high surface coverage on a carbon substrate by maximizing defect sites of cellulose during CTS. Cu NPs with high surface coverage of ~85%, various single NPs and polyelemental alloy NPs were densely fabricated with high uniformity and dispersity. The synthesized Cu NPs on cellulose/carbon paper substrate were used in electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction reaction showing selectivity to ethylene of ~49% and high stability for over 30 hours of reaction. Our cellulose-derived CTS method enables the greater availability of polyelemental NPs for a wide range of catalytic and electrochemical applications.

Encapsulating Cobalt Nanoparticles in Interconnected N-Doped Hollow Carbon Nanofibers with Enriched CoNC Moiety for Enhanced Oxygen Electrocatalysis in Zn-Air Batteries

Rational design of bifunctional efficient electrocatalysts for both oxygen reduction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER) is desirable-while highly challenging-for development of rechargeable metal-air batteries. Herein, an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst is designed and fabricated by encapsulating Co nanoparticles in interconnected N-doped hollow porous carbon nanofibers (designated as Co@N-C/PCNF) using an ultrafast high-temperature shock technology. Benefiting from the synergistic effect and intrinsic activity of the CoNC moiety, as well as porous structure of carbon nanofibers, the Co@N-C/PCNF composite shows high bifunctional electrocatalytic activities for both OER (289 mV at 10 mA cm-2 ) and ORR (half-wave potential of 0.85 V). The CoNC moiety in the composite can modulate the local environmental and electrical structure of the catalysts, thus optimizing the adsorption/desorption kinetics and decreasing the reaction barriers for promoting the reversible oxygen electrocatalysis. Co@N-C/PCNF-based aqueous Zn-air batteries (AZAB) provide high power density of 292 mW cm-2 , and the assembled flexible ZAB can power wearable devices.

Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 before and after symptom onset: impact of nonpharmaceutical interventions in China

Nonpharmaceutical interventions, such as contact tracing and quarantine, have been the primary means of controlling the spread of SARS-CoV-2; however, it remains uncertain which interventions are most effective at reducing transmission at the population level. Using serial interval data from before and after the rollout of nonpharmaceutical interventions in China, we estimate that the relative frequency of presymptomatic transmission increased from 34% before the rollout to 71% afterward. The shift toward earlier transmission indicates a disproportionate reduction in transmission post-symptom onset. We estimate that, following the rollout of nonpharmaceutical interventions, transmission post-symptom onset was reduced by 82% whereas presymptomatic transmission decreased by only 16%. The observation that only one-third of transmission was presymptomatic at baseline, combined with the finding that NPIs reduced presymptomatic transmission by less than 20%, suggests that the overall impact of NPIs was driven in large part by reductions in transmission following symptom onset. This implies that interventions which limit opportunities for transmission in the later stages of infection, such as contact tracing and isolation, are particularly important for control of SARS-CoV-2. Interventions which specifically reduce opportunities for presymptomatic transmission, such as quarantine of asymptomatic contacts, are likely to have smaller, but non-negligible, effects on overall transmission.
