Solvent-mediated charge separation drives alternative hydrogenation path of furanics in liquid water

Unveiling the Role of Water in Heterogeneous Photocatalysis of Methanol Conversion for Efficient Hydrogen Production

Water molecules, which act as both solvent and reactant, play critical roles in photocatalytic reactions for methanol conversion. However, the influence of water on the adsorption of methanol and desorption of liquid products, which are two essential steps that control the performance in photocatalysis, has been well under-explored. Herein, we reveal the role of water in heterogeneous photocatalytic processes of methanol conversion on the platinized carbon nitride (Pt/C3N4) model photocatalyst. In situ spectroscopy techniques, isotope effects, and computational calculations demonstrate that water shows adverse effects on the adsorption of methanol molecules and desorption processes of methanol oxidation products on the surface of Pt/C3N4, significantly altering the reaction pathways in photocatalytic methanol conversion process. Guided by these discoveries, a photothermal-assisted photocatalytic system is designed to achieve a high solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency of 2.3 %, which is among the highest values reported. This work highlights the important roles of solvents in controlling the adsorption/desorption behaviours of liquid-phase heterogeneous catalysis.

Strengthening the Metal-Acid Interactions by Using CeO2 as Regulators of Precisely Placing Pt Species in ZSM-5 for Furfural Hydrogenation

Understanding the synergism between the metal site and acid site is of great significance in boosting the efficiency of bi-functional catalysts in many heterogeneous reactions, particularly in biomass upgrading. Herein, a "confined auto-redox" strategy is reported to fix CeO2-anchored Pt atoms on the inner wall of a ZSM-5 cage, achieving the target of finely controlling the placements of the two active sites. Compared with the conventional surface-supported counterpart, the encapsulated Pt/CeO2@ZSM-5 catalyst possesses remarkably-improved activity and selectivity, which can convert >99% furfural into cyclopentanone with 97.2% selectivity in 6 h at 160 °C. Besides the excellent catalytic performance, the ordered metal-acid distribution also makes such kind of catalyst an ideal research subject for metal-acid interactions. The following mechanization investigation reveals that the enhancement is strongly related to the unique encapsulation structure, which promotes the migration of the reactants over different active sites, thereby contributing to the tandem reaction.

Spontaneous Charge Separation at the Metal-Water Interface

Reactions at the metal-water interface are essential in a range of fundamental and technological processes. Using Density Functional Theory calculations, we demonstrate that water substantially affects the adsorption of H and O2 on Cu(111), Ag(111), Au(111), Pd(111) and Pt(111). In water, H is found to undergo a spontaneous charge separation, where a proton desorbs to the water solution while an electron is donated to the surface. The reaction is exothermic over Au and Pt and associated with low barriers. The process is facile also over Pd, albeit slightly endothermic. For O2, water is found to increase the metal-to-adsorbate charge transfer, enhancing the adsorption energy and O-O bond length as compared to the adsorption in the absence of water. The magnitudes of the effects are system dependent, which implies that calculations should treat water explicitly. The results elucidate previous experimental results and highlights the importance of charge-transfer effects at the metal-water interface; both to describe the potential energy landscape, and to account for alternative reaction routes in the presence of water.

Toward High-Performance Hydrogenation at Room Temperature Through Tailoring Nickel Catalysts Stable in Aqueous Solution

The development of highly active, reusable catalysts for aqueous-phase reactions is challenging. Herein, metallic nickel is encapsulated in a nitrogen-doped carbon-silica composite (SiO2@Ni@NC) as a catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of vanillin in aqueous media. The constructed catalyst achieved 99.8% vanillin conversion and 100% 4-hydroxymethyl-2-methoxyphenol selectivity at room temperature. Based on combined scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman analyses, the satisfactory catalytic performance is attributed to the composite structure consisting of an active metal, carbon, and silica. The hydrophilic silica core promoted dispersion of the catalyst in aqueous media. Moreover, the external hydrophobic NC layer has multiple functions, including preventing oxidation or leaching of the internal metal, acting as a reducing agent to reduce the internal metal, regulating the active-site microenvironment by enriching the concentrations of H2 and organic reactants, and modifying the electronic structure of the active metal via metal-support interactions. Density functional theory calculations indicated that NC facilitates vanillin adsorption and hydrogen dissociation to promote aqueous-phase hydrogenation. This study provides an efficient strategy for constructing encapsulated Ni-based amphiphilic catalysts to upgrade biomass-derived compounds.

Highly Selective Hydrogenation of Unsaturated Aldehydes in Aqueous Phase

Chemoselective hydrogenation of carbonyl in unsaturated aldehydes is a significant process in the chemical industry, in which the development of aqueous-phase reaction systems as a substitution to organic ones is challenging. Herein, we report Ir atomic cluster catalysts anchored onto WO3-x nanorods via a reduction treatment at various temperatures (denoted as Ir/WOx-T, T = 200, 300, 400, and 500 °C), which accelerates the chemoselective hydrogenation of carbonyl groups in aqueous solutions. The optimal catalyst Ir/WOx-300 exhibits exceptional activity (TOF value: 1313.7 min-1) and chemoselectivity toward cinnamaldehyde (CAL) hydrogenation to cinnamyl alcohol (COL) (yield: ∼98.0%) in water medium, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest level compared with previously reported heterogeneous catalysts in liquid-phase reaction. Ac-HAADF-STEM, XAFS, and XPS verify the formation of interface structure (Irδ+-Ov-W5+ (0 ≤ δ ≤ 4); Ov denotes oxygen vacancy) induced by metal-support interaction and the largest concentration of interfacial Ir (Irδ+) in Ir/WOx-300. In situ studies (Raman, FT-IR), isotopic labeling measurements combined with DFT calculations substantiate that the hydrogenation of the C=O group consists of two pathways: water-mediated hydrogenation (predominant) and direct hydrogenation via H2 dissociation (secondary). In the former case, W5+-Ov site accelerates the activation adsorption of H2O, while Ir0 site facilitates the H-H bond cleavage of H2 and Irδ+ promotes the CAL adsorption. H2O molecule, as the source of hydrogen species, participates directly in the hydrogenation of the carbonyl group through a hydrogen-bonded network, with a largely reduced energy barrier relative to the H2 dissociation path. This work demonstrates a green catalytic route that breaks the activity-selectivity trade-off toward the selective hydrogenation of unsaturated aldehydes, which shows great potential in heterogeneous catalysis.

Water structures on acidic zeolites and their roles in catalysis

The local reaction environment of catalytic active sites can be manipulated to modify the kinetics and thermodynamic properties of heterogeneous catalysis. Because of the unique physical-chemical nature of water, heterogeneously catalyzed reactions involving specific interactions between water molecules and active sites on catalysts exhibit distinct outcomes that are different from those performed in the absence of water. Zeolitic materials are being applied with the presence of water for heterogeneous catalytic reactions in the chemical industry and our transition to sustainable energy. Mechanistic investigation and in-depth understanding about the behaviors and the roles of water are essentially required for zeolite chemistry and catalysis. In this review, we focus on the discussions of the nature and structures of water adsorbed/stabilized on Brønsted and Lewis acidic zeolites based on experimental observations as well as theoretical calculation results. The unveiled functions of water structures in determining the catalytic efficacy of zeolite-catalyzed reactions have been overviewed and the strategies frequently developed for enhancing the stabilization of zeolite catalysts are highlighted. Recent advancement will contribute to the development of innovative catalytic reactions and the rationalization of catalytic performances in terms of activity, selectivity and stability with the presence of water vapor or in condensed aqueous phase.

Water-Induced Micro-Hydrophobic Effect Regulates Benzene Methylation in Zeolite

Water is a ubiquitous component in heterogeneous catalysis over zeolites and can significantly influence the catalyst performance. However, the detailed mechanism insights into zeolite-catalyzed reactions under microscale aqueous environment remain elusive. Here, using multiple dimensional solid-state NMR experiments coupled with ultrahigh magic angle spinning technique and theoretical simulations, we establish a fundamental understanding of the role of water in benzene methylation over ZSM-5 zeolite under water vapor conditions. We show that water competes with benzene for the active sites of zeolite and facilitates the bimolecular reaction mechanism. The growth of water clusters induces a micro-hydrophobic effect in zeolite pores, which reorients benzene molecules and drives their interactions with surface methoxy species (SMS) on zeolite. We identify the formation and evolution of active SMS-Benzene complexes in a microscale aqueous environment and demonstrate that their accumulation in zeolite pores boosts benzene conversion and methylation.

Constructing a Pd-Co Interface to Tailor a d-Band Center for Highly Efficient Hydroconversion of Furfural over Cobalt Oxide-Supported Pd Catalysts

Cobalt is an alternative catalyst for furfural hydrogenation but suffers from the strong binding of H and furan ring on the surface, resulting in low catalytic activity and chemoselectivity. Herein, by constructing a Pd-Co interface in cobalt oxide-supported Pd catalysts to tailor the d-band center of Co, the concerted effort of Pd and Co boosts the catalytic performance for the hydroconversion of furfural to cyclopentanone and cyclopentanol. The increased dispersion of Pd on acid etching Co3O4 promotes the reduction of Co3+ to Co0 by enhancing hydrogen spillover, favoring the creation of the Pd-Co interface. Both experimental and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the electron transfer from Pd to Co at the interface results in the downshift of the d-band center of Co atoms, accompanied by the destabilization of H and furan ring adsorption on the Co surface, respectively. The former improves the furfural hydrogenation with TOF on Co elevating from 0.20 to 0.62 s-1, and the latter facilitates the desorption of formed furfuryl alcohol from the Co surface for subsequently hydrogenative rearrangement of the furan ring to cyclopentanone on acid sites. The resultant Pd/Co3O4-6 catalyst delivers superior activity with a 99% furfural conversion and 85% overall selectivity toward cyclopentanone/cyclopentanol. We anticipate that such a concept of tailoring the d-band center of Co via interface engineering provides novel insight and feasible approach for the design of highly efficient catalysts for furfural hydroconversion and beyond.

Strong-Proton-Adsorption Co-Based Electrocatalysts Achieve Active and Stable Neutral Seawater Splitting

Direct electrolysis of pH-neutral seawater to generate hydrogen is an attractive approach for storing renewable energy. However, due to the anodic competition between the chlorine evolution and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), direct seawater splitting suffers from a low current density and limited operating stability. Exploration of catalysts enabling an OER overpotential below the hypochlorite formation overpotential (≈490 mV) is critical to suppress the chloride evolution and facilitate seawater splitting. Here, a proton-adsorption-promoting strategy to increase the OER rate is reported, resulting in a promoted and more stable neutral seawater splitting. The best catalysts herein are strong-proton-adsorption (SPA) materials such as palladium-doped cobalt oxide (Co3- x Pdx O4 ) catalysts. These achieve an OER overpotential of 370 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in pH-neutral simulated seawater, outperforming Co3 O4 by a margin of 70 mV. Co3- x Pdx O4 catalysts provide stable catalytic performance for 450 h at 200 mA cm-2 and 20 h at 1 A cm-2 in neutral seawater. Experimental studies and theoretical calculations suggest that the incorporation of SPA cations accelerates the rate-determining water dissociation step in neutral OER pathway, and control studies rule out the provision of additional OER sites as a main factor herein.

Bioelectrocatalysis with a palladium membrane reactor

Enzyme catalysis is used to generate approximately 50,000 tons of value-added chemical products per year. Nearly a quarter of this production requires a stoichiometric cofactor such as NAD⁺/NADH. Given that NADH is expensive, it would be beneficial to regenerate it in a way that does not interfere with the enzymatic reaction. Water electrolysis could provide the proton and electron equivalent necessary to electrocatalytically convert NAD⁺ to NADH. However, this form of electrocatalytic NADH regeneration is challenged by the formation of inactive NAD₂ dimers, the use of high overpotentials or mediators, and the long-term electrochemical instability of the enzyme during electrolysis. Here, we show a means of overcoming these challenges by using a bioelectrocatalytic palladium membrane reactor for electrochemical NADH regeneration from NAD⁺. This achievement is possible because the membrane reactor regenerates NADH through reaction of hydride with NAD⁺ in a compartment separated from the electrolysis compartment by a hydrogen-permselective Pd membrane. This separation of the enzymatic and electrolytic processes bypasses radical-induced NAD⁺ degradation and enables the operator to optimize conditions for the enzymatic reaction independent of the water electrolysis. This architecture, which mechanistic studies reveal utilizes hydride sourced from water, provides an opportunity for enzyme catalysis to be driven by clean electricity where the major waste product is oxygen gas.

Creating and Stabilizing an Oxidized Pd Surface under Reductive Conditions for Photocatalytic Hydrogenation of Aromatic Carbonyls

Photocatalysis provides an eco-friendly route for the hydrogenation of aromatic carbonyls to O-free aromatics, which is an important refining process in the chemical industry that is generally carried out under high pressure of hydrogen at elevated temperatures. However, aromatic carbonyls are often only partially hydrogenated to alcohols, which readily desorbs and are hardly further deoxygenated under ambient conditions. Here, we show that by constructing an oxide surface over the Pd cocatalyst supported on graphitic carbon nitride, an alternative hydrogenation path of aromatic carbonyls becomes available via a step-wise acetalization and hydrogenation, thus allowing efficient and selective production of O-free aromatics. The PdO surface allows for optimum adsorption of reactants and intermediates and rapid abstraction of hydrogen from the alcohol donor, favoring fast acetalization of the carbonyls and their consecutive hydrogenation to O-free hydrocarbons. The photocatalytic hydrogenation of benzaldehyde into toluene shows a high selectivity of >90% and a quantum efficiency of ∼10.2% under 410 nm irradiation. By adding trace amounts of HCl to the reaction solution, the PdO surface remains stable and active for long-term operation at high concentrations, offering perspective for practical applications.

Insight into the Interaction of Furfural with Metallic Surfaces in the Electrochemical Hydrogenation Process

Electrocatalytic hydrogenation of furfural on metal surfaces has become an important research subject due to the potential of the reaction product 2-methylfuran as a renewable energy resource. Identifying effective determinants in this reaction process requires a thorough investigation of the complex electrode-electrolyte interactions, which considers a variety of the influential components. In this work, in operando electrochemical Raman Spectroscopy and Molecular Dynamics simulations were utilized to investigate different characteristics of the interface layer in the electrocatalytic hydrogenation of furfural. Hereby, the influence of applied potentials, electrode material, and electrolyte composition were investigated in detail. The studied parameters give an insight into furfural's binding situation, molecular orientation, and reaction mechanism.

H+ -H- Pairs in Partially Oxidized MAX Phases for Bifunctional Catalytic Conversion of Furfurals into Linear Ketones

Currently, less favorable C=O hydrogenation and weak concerted acid catalysis cause unsatisfactory catalytic performance in the upgrading of biomass-derived furfurals (i.e., furfural, 5-methyl furfural, and 5-hydroxymethyl furfural) to ketones (i.e., cyclopentanone, 2,5-hexanedione, and 1-hydroxyl-2,5-hexanedione). A series of partially oxidized MAX phase (i.e., Ti₃ AlC₂ , Ti₂ AlC, Ti₃ SiC₂ ) supporting Pd catalysts were fabricated, which showed high catalytic activity; Pd/Ti₃ AlC₂ in particular displayed high performance for conversion of furfurals into targeted ketones. Detailed studies of the catalytic mechanism confirm that in situ hydrogen spillover generates Frustrated Lewis H⁺ -H^- pairs, which not only act as the hydrogenation sites for selective C=O hydrogenation but also provide acid sites for ring opening. The close intimate hydrogenation and acid sites promote bifunctional catalytic reactions, substantially reducing the reported minimum reaction temperature of various furfurals by at least 30-60 °C.

Boosting Catalytic Selectivity through a Precise Spatial Control of Catalysts at Pickering Droplet Interfaces

Exploration of new methodologies to tune catalytic selectivity is a long-sought goal in catalytic community. In this work, oil-water interfaces of Pickering emulsions are developed to effectively regulate catalytic selectivity of hydrogenation reactions, which was achieved via a precise control of the spatial distribution of metal nanoparticles at the droplet interfaces. It was found that Pd nanoparticles located in the inner interfacial layer of Pickering droplets exhibited a significantly enhanced selectivity for p-chloroaniline (up to 99.6%) in the hydrogenation of p-chloronitrobenzene in comparison to those in the outer interfacial layer (63.6%) in pure water (68.5%) or in pure organic solvents (46.8%). Experimental and theoretical investigations indicated that such a remarkable interfacial microregion-dependent catalytic selectivity was attributed to the microenvironments of the coexistence of water and organic solvent at the droplet interfaces, which could provide unique interfacial hydrogen-bonding interactions and solvation effects so as to alter the adsorption patterns of p-chloronitrobenzene and p-chloroaniline on the Pd nanoparticles, thereby avoiding the unwanted contact of C-Cl bonds with the metal surfaces. Our strategy of precise spatial control of catalysts at liquid-liquid interfaces and the unprecedented interfacial effect reported here not only provide new insights into the liquid-liquid interfacial reactions but also open an avenue to boost catalytic selectivity.

Aldehyde Hydrogenation by Pt/TiO2 Catalyst in Aqueous Phase: Synergistic Effect of Oxygen Vacancy and Solvent Water

The aldehyde hydrogenation for stabilizing and upgrading biomass is typically performed in aqueous phase with supported metal catalysts. By combining density functional theory calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, the model reaction of formaldehyde hydrogenation with a Pt/TiO₂ catalyst is investigated with explicit solvent water molecules. In aqueous phase, both the O vacancy (Ov) on support and solvent molecules could donate charges to a Pt cluster, where the Ov could dominantly reduce the Pt cluster from positive to negative. During the formaldehyde hydrogenation, the water molecules could spontaneously protonate the O in the aldehyde group by acid/base exchange, generating the OH* at the metal-support interface by long-range proton transfer. By comparing the stoichiometric and reduced TiO₂ support, it is found that the further hydrogenation of OH* is hard on the positively charged Pt cluster over stoichiometric TiO₂. However, with the presence of Ov on reduced support, the OH* hydrogenation could become not only exergonic but also kinetically more facile, which prohibits the catalyst from poisoning. This mechanism suggests that both the proton transfer from solvent water molecules and the easier OH* hydrogenation from Ov could synergistically promote aldehyde hydrogenation. That means, even for such simple hydrogenation in water, the catalytic mechanism could explicitly relate to all of the metal cluster, oxide support, and solvent waters. Considering the ubiquitous Ov defects in reducible oxide supports and the common aqueous environment, this synergistic effect may not be exclusive to Pt/TiO₂, which can be crucial for supported metal catalysts in biomass conversion.

Controlling Selectivity in Plasmonic Catalysis: Switching Reaction Pathway from Hydrogenation to Homocoupling Under Visible-Light Irradiation

Plasmonic catalysis enables the use of light to accelerate molecular transformations. Its application to the control reaction selectivity is highly attractive but remains challenging. Here, we have found that the plasmonic properties in AgPd nanoparticles allowed different reaction pathways for tunable product formation under visible-light irradiation. By employing the hydrogenation of phenylacetylene as a model transformation, we demonstrate that visible-light irradiation can be employed to steer the reaction pathway from hydrogenation to homocoupling. Our data showed that the decrease in the concentration of H species at the surface due to plasmon-enhanced H₂ desorption led to the control in selectivity. These results provide important insights into the understanding of reaction selectivity with light, paving the way for the application of plasmonic catalysis to the synthesis of 1,3-diynes, and bringing the vision of light-driven transformations with target selectivity one step closer to reality.

Importance of interface open circuit potential on aqueous hydrogenolytic reduction of benzyl alcohol over Pd/C

The open circuit potential (OCP) established by the quasi-equilibrated electrode reaction of H₂ and H₃O⁺_(hydr.), complicates catalytic reactions significantly. The hydrogenolysis rate of benzylic alcohol on Pd/C increases 2-3 orders of magnitude with the pH decreasing from 7 to 0.6. The reaction follows a pathway of protonated benzyl alcohol dehydration to a benzylic carbenium ion, followed by a hydride addition to form toluene. The dehydration of protonated benzyl alcohol is kinetic relevent, thus, being enhanced at lower pH. The OCP stabilizes all cationic species in the elementary steps. Particularly, the initial state (benzyl alcohol oxonium ion) is less stabilized than the dehydration transition state and the product (benzylic carbenium), thus, lowering the free energy barrier of the rate-determining step. In accordance, the rate increased with increasingly negative OCP. Beside OCP, an external negative electric potential in an electrocatlaytic system was also demonstrated to enhance the rate in the same way.

Impact of hydronium ions on the Pd-catalyzed furfural hydrogenation

In aqueous mediums, the chemical environment for catalytic reactions is not only comprised of water molecules but also of corresponding ionized species, i.e., hydronium ions, which can impact the mechanism and kinetics of a reaction. Here we show that in aqueous-phase hydrogenation of furfural on Pd/C, increasing the hydronium ion activities by five orders of magnitude (from pH 7 to pH 1.6) leads to an increase of less than one order of magnitude in the reaction rate. Instead of a proton-coupled electron transfer pathway, our results show that a Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism describes the rate-limiting hydrogen addition step, where hydrogen atom adsorbed on Pd is transferred to the carbonyl C atom of the reactant. As such, the strength of hydrogen binding on Pd, which decreases with increasing hydronium ion concentration (i.e., 2 kJ mol_H2^-1 per unit pH), is a decisive factor in hydrogenation kinetics (rate constant +270%). In comparison, furfural adsorption on Pd is pH-independent, maintaining a tilted geometry that favors hydrogen attack at the carbonyl group over the furan ring.

Analysing the relationship between the fields of thermo- and electrocatalysis taking hydrogen peroxide as a case study

Research in thermo- and electrocatalysis have often preceded in isolation, even for similar reactions. Here, the authors compare current trends in both fields and elaborate on the commonalities and differences with a specific focus on the production of hydrogen peroxide.

The promotion effect of π-π interactions in Pd NPs catalysed selective hydrogenation

The utilization of weak interactions to improve the catalytic performance of supported metal catalysts is an important strategy for catalysts design, but still remains a big challenge. In this work, the weak interactions nearby the Pd nanoparticles (NPs) are finely tuned by using a series of imine-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with different conjugation skeletons. The Pd NPs embedded in pyrene-COF are ca. 3 to 10-fold more active than those in COFs without pyrene in the hydrogenation of aromatic ketones/aldehydes, quinolines and nitrobenzene, though Pd have similar size and surface structure. With acetophenone (AP) hydrogenation as a model reaction, systematic studies imply that the π-π interaction of AP and pyrene rings in the vicinity of Pd NPs could significantly reduce the activation barrier in the rate-determining step. This work highlights the important role of non-covalent interactions beyond the active sites in modulating the catalytic performance of supported metal NPs.

The non-covalent interactions play an important role in biocatalysis, but they have not been fully explored in metal-catalysed reactions. Herein, the authors present advanced understanding of the π-π interactions of covalent organic frameworks in Pd catalysed selective hydrogenation.

Explaining the structure sensitivity of Pt and Rh for aqueous-phase hydrogenation of phenol

Phenol is an important model compound to understand the thermocatalytic (TCH) and electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) of biomass to biofuels. Although Pt and Rh are among the most studied catalysts for aqueous-phase phenol hydrogenation, the reason why certain facets are active for ECH and TCH is not fully understood. Herein, we identify the active facet of Pt and Rh catalysts for aqueous-phase hydrogenation of phenol and explain the origin of the size-dependent activity trends of Pt and Rh nanoparticles. Phenol adsorption energies extracted on the active sites of Pt and Rh nanoparticles on carbon by fitting kinetic data show that the active sites adsorb phenol weakly. We predict that the turnover frequencies (TOFs) for the hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone on Pt(111) and Rh(111) terraces are higher than those on (221) stepped facets based on density functional theory modeling and mean-field microkinetic simulations. The higher activities of the (111) terraces are due to lower activation energies and weaker phenol adsorption, preventing high coverages of phenol from inhibiting hydrogen adsorption. We measure that the TOF for ECH of phenol increases as the Rh nanoparticle diameter increases from 2 to 10 nm at 298 K and −0.1 V vs the reversible hydrogen electrode, qualitatively matching prior reports for Pt nanoparticles. The increase in experimental TOFs as Pt and Rh nanoparticle diameters increase is due to a larger fraction of terraces on larger particles. These findings clarify the structure sensitivity and active site of Pt and Rh for the hydrogenation of phenol and will inform the catalyst design for the hydrogenation of bio-oils.

Discovery of a New Solvent Co-Catalyzed Mechanism in Heterogeneous Catalysis: A First-Principles Study with Molecular Dynamics on Acetaldehyde Hydrogenation on Birnessite

Heterogenous hydrogenation reactions are essential in a wide range of chemical industries. In this work, we find that the hydrogenation of acetaldehyde on birnessite cannot occur through the traditional mechanisms due to the strong adsorption of the aldehyde and hydrogen on the surface, using first-principles calculations. We discover that this reaction can occur feasibly via a solvent-cocatalyzed mechanism with molecular hydrogen in the liquid phase: a methanol solvent or a similar solvent is required for the reaction. Free energy calculations shows that the methanol solvent preferentially fills the oxygen vacancies of the catalyst surface and spontaneously dissociates on the surface, in which the resulting hydroxyl group then acts as the coordination site for the carbonyl bond and allows the reaction to proceed without adsorption of the reactants on the surface. The reasons this new mechanism is more favorable over the traditional mechanisms in the literature are scrutinized and discussed. The new mechanism may be followed in many other systems.

Localized Orbital Excitation Drives Bond Formation in Plasmonic Catalysis

Localized surface plasmons generated on metallic nanostructures can be used to accelerate molecular transformations; however, the efficiency is limited by the challenge to control the energy/charge transfer at the interfaces. Here, we combine density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experiments to reveal the mechanism of nitrophenol reduction on Au nanoparticles under visible-light irradiation and propose a strategy to further enhance the reaction rates. DFT calculations show a reduced activation barrier under electronic excitation on Au(111), thus explaining the measured higher rates under visible-light irradiation. Furthermore, we propose a heterostructure with Au nanoparticles covered by a thin film of hexagonal boron nitride; the latter is used to decouple the molecular orbitals from the metal to enable charge localization in the molecule. DFT calculations show that by this electronic decoupling, the activation barrier can be lowered by a factor of five. This work thus provides a valuable strategy for optimizing catalytic efficiency in plasmonic photocatalysis.
