Carbene derived diradicaloids - building blocks for singlet fission?

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Analogues of Wittig Hydrocarbon

N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) analogues of Wittig hydrocarbon, [(NHC)(Stil)(NHC)] (3a-c) (NHC = SIPr (1a) = C[N(Dipp)CH2]2, Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3; IPr (1b) = C[N(Dipp)CH]2; Me-IPr (1c) = C[N(Dipp)CMe]2 and Stil = C6H4CHCHC6H4) have been reported as crystalline solids. 3a-c are prepared by two-electron reductions of the corresponding bis-1,3-imidazoli(ni)um bromides [(NHC)(Stil)NHC)](Br)2 (2a-c) with KC8 in >94 % yields. 2a-c are accessible by the nickel catalyzed direct C-C coupling of NHCs (1a-c) with (E)-4,4'-dibromostilbene. One-electron oxidation of 3a,b yields the corresponding radical cations [(NHC)(Stil)NHC)]B(C6F5)4 4a,b. All compounds have been characterized by UV-Vis/NMR/EPR spectroscopy as well as 2a, 3a, and 3b by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The electronic structures of representative systems have been analyzed by quantum chemical calculations.

A Stable Chichibabin Diradicaloid with Near-Infrared Emission

Conjugated molecules with multiple radical centers such as the iconic Chichibabin diradicaloid hold promise as building blocks in materials for quantum sensing and quantum information processing. However, it is a considerable challenge to design simple analogues of the Chichibabin hydrocarbon that are chemically inert, exhibit high diradical character and emit light at a distinct wavelength that may offer an optical readout of the spin state in functional ensembles. Here we describe the serendipitous discovery of the stable TTM-TTM diradicaloid, which exhibits high diradical character, a striking sky-blue color and near-infrared (NIR) emission (in solution). This combination of properties is unique among related diradicaloids and is due to the presence of hydrogen and chlorine atoms in "just the right positions", allowing a perfectly planar, yet predominantly benzenoid bridge to connect the two sterically stabilized radical centers. In-depth studies of the optical and magnetic properties suggest that this structural motif could become a mainstay building block of organic spin materials.

Bis-[cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene]-derived diradicals

Crystalline polymeric structures of trans-1,4-cyclohexylene bridged N-tethered bis-CAACs in the form of their LiOTf adducts were synthesized and isolated. These were further used as building blocks for the synthesis of crystalline (amino)(carboxy)-based diradicals. The triplet diradical character of these compounds was unambiguously confirmed by the presence of a half-field signal in their EPR spectra. Theoretical calculations show that the singlet state is marginally more stable than the triplet state.

Dark State of the Thiele Hydrocarbon: Efficient Solvatochromic Emission from a Nonpolar Centrosymmetric Singlet Diradicaloid

In this work, a comprehensive investigation of the photoinduced processes and mechanisms linked to the luminescence of a novel nonperchlorinated Thiele hydrocarbon (TTH) is presented. Despite the comparable diradical character of TTH (y0 = 0.32-0.44) and the unsubstituted Thiele hydrocarbon (TH) (y0 = 0.30), the polyhalogenated species is inert and photostable, showing an intense deep-red/near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence (photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) = 0.84 in toluene) even at room temperature and in the solid state (PLQY = 0.19). TTH displays a large Stokes shift (307 nm in benzonitrile) and solvatochromic behavior, which is unusual for a centrosymmetric, nonpolar, and low-conjugated species. These outstanding emission features are interpreted through quantum-chemical calculations, indicating that its fluorescence arises from the low-lying dark doubly excited zwitterionic state, typically found at low excitation energies in diradicaloids, acquiring dipole moment and intensity by state mixing via twisting around the strongly elongated exocyclic CC bonds of the excited p-quinodimethane (pQDM) core, with a mechanism similar to sudden polarization occurring in olefins. Such a mechanism is derived from ns and fs transient absorption measurements.

Structure and bonding of proximity-enforced main-group dimers stabilized by a rigid naphthyridine diimine ligand

The development of ligands capable of effectively stabilizing highly reactive main-group species has led to the experimental realization of a variety of systems with fascinating properties. In this work, we computationally investigate the electronic, structural, energetic, and bonding features of proximity-enforced group 13-15 homodimers stabilized by a rigid expanded pincer ligand based on the 1,8-naphthyridine (napy) core. We show that the redox-active naphthyridine diimine (NDI) ligand enables a wide variety of structural motifs and element-element interaction modes, the latter ranging from isolated, element-centered lone pairs (e.g., E = Si, Ge) to cases where through-space π bonds (E = Pb), element-element multiple bonds (E = P, As) and biradical ground states (E = N) are observed. Our results hint at the feasibility of NDI-E₂ species as viable synthetic targets, highlighting the versatility and potential applications of napy-based ligands in main-group chemistry.

Crystalline Anions Based on Classical N-Heterocyclic Carbenes

Herein, the first stable anions K[SIPr^Bp ] (4 a-K) and K[IPr^Bp ] (4 b-K) (SIPr^Bp =BpC{N(Dipp)CH₂ }₂ , IPr^Bp =BpC{N(Dipp)CH}₂ ; Bp=4-PhC₆ H₄ ; Dipp=2,6-iPr₂ C₆ H₃ ) derived from classical N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) (i.e. SIPr and IPr) have been isolated as violet crystalline solids. 4 a-K and 4 b-K are prepared by KC₈ reduction of the neutral radicals [SIPr^Bp ] (3 a) and [IPr^Bp ] (3 b), respectively. The radicals 3 a and 3 b as well as [Me-IPr^Bp ] 3 c (Me-IPr^Bp =BpC{N(Dipp)CMe}₂ ) are accessible as crystalline solids on treatment of the respective 1,3-imidazoli(ni)um bromides (SIPr^Bp )Br (2 a), (IPr^Bp )Br (2 b), and (Me-IPr^Bp )Br (2 c) with KC₈ . The cyclic voltammograms of 2 a-2 c exhibit two one-electron reversible redox processes in -0.5 to -2.5 V region that correspond to the radicals 3 a-3 c and the anions (4 a-4 c)^- . Computational calculations suggest a closed-shell singlet ground state for (4 a-4 c)^- with the singlet-triplet energy gap of 17-24 kcal mol^-1 .

Carbodicarbenes and Striking Redox Transitions of their Conjugate Acids: Influence of NHC versus CAAC as Donor Substituents

Herein, a new type of carbodicarbene (CDC) comprising two different classes of carbenes is reported; NHC and CAAC as donor substituents and compare the molecular structure and coordination to Au(I)Cl to those of NHC-only and CAAC-only analogues. The conjugate acids of these three CDCs exhibit notable redox properties. Their reactions with [NO][SbF₆ ] were investigated. The reduction of the conjugate acid of CAAC-only based CDC with KC₈ results in the formation of hydrogen abstracted/eliminated products, which proceed through a neutral radical intermediate, detected by EPR spectroscopy. In contrast, the reduction of conjugate acids of NHC-only and NHC/CAAC based CDCs led to intermolecular reductive (reversible) carbon-carbon sigma bond formation. The resulting relatively elongated carbon-carbon sigma bonds were found to be readily oxidized. They were, thus, demonstrated to be potent reducing agents, underlining their potential utility as organic electron donors and n-dopants in organic semiconductor molecules.

Gauging Radical Stabilization with Carbenes

Carbenes, including N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands, are used extensively to stabilize open‐shell transition metal complexes and organic radicals. Yet, it remains unknown, which carbene stabilizes a radical well and, thus, how to design radical‐stabilizing C‐donor ligands. With the large variety of C‐donor ligands experimentally investigated and their electronic properties established, we report herein their radical‐stabilizing effect. We show that radical stabilization can be understood by a captodative frontier orbital description involving π‐donation to‐ and π‐donation from the carbenes. This picture sheds a new perspective on NHC chemistry, where π‐donor effects usually are assumed to be negligible. Further, it allows for the intuitive prediction of the thermodynamic stability of covalent radicals of main group‐ and transition metal carbene complexes, and the quantification of redox non‐innocence.

Isolation of an Arsenic Diradicaloid with a Cyclic C2 As2 -Core

Herein, we report on the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity studies of the first cyclic C2 As2 -diradicaloid {(IPr)CAs}2 (6) (IPr = C{N(Dipp)CH}2 ; Dipp = 2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 ). Treatment of (IPr)CH2 (1) with AsCl3 affords the Lewis adduct {(IPr)CH2 }AsCl3 (2). Compound 2 undergoes stepwise dehydrochlorination to yield {(IPr)CH}AsCl2 (3) and {(IPr)CAsCl}2 (5 a) or [{(IPr)CAs}2 Cl]OTf (5 b). Reduction of 5 a (or 5 b) with magnesium turnings gives 6 as a red crystalline solid in 90% yield. Compound 6 featuring a planar C2 As2 ring is diamagnetic and exhibits well resolved NMR signals. DFT calculations reveal a singlet ground state for 6 with a small singlet-triplet energy gap of 8.7 kcal mol-1 . The diradical character of 6 amounts to 20% (CASSCF, complete active space self consistent field) and 28% (DFT). Treatments of 6 with (PhSe)2 and Fe2 (CO)9 give rise to {(IPr)CAs(SePh)}2 (7) and {(IPr)CAs}2 Fe(CO)4 (8), respectively.

Exploring optimal multimode vibronic pathways in singlet fission of azaborine analogues of perylene

The development of new singlet fission chromophores is a vibrant area of research to explore the possibility of efficient photovoltaic devices. Using high-level ab-initio density matrix renormalization group calculations, we present a systematic analysis of BN-doped perylenes for their potential application as singlet fission candidates. Four singlet fission chromophores are identified considering the monomer-based properties and their excitonic characters are further analyzed in a dimer configuration optimized in a six-dimensional space for local maxima of fission rates. Furthermore, a multistate multimode vibronic Hamiltonian is employed to identify intra- and interstate vibrational pathways for excitation energy modulation. Several photophysical properties such as Davydov splitting, activation energy and vibronic admixture of multiexcitonic and charge-transfer states are calculated for physically accessible dimers. The optimal dimer packing results in appropriate vibrational relaxation of singlet fission states and promotes significant population transfer which would be more attenuated without such couplings. This work not only identifies potential singlet fission systems with favorable electronic properties but also highlights the sensitivity of dimer packings with respect to the substitution patterns in singlet fission chromophores.

Organic Four-Electron Redox Systems Based on Bipyridine and Phenanthroline Carbene Architectures

Novel organic redox systems that display multistage redox behaviour are highly sought-after for a series of applications such as organic batteries or electrochromic materials. Here we describe a simple strategy to transfer well-known two-electron redox active bipyridine and phenanthroline architectures into novel strongly reducing four-electron redox systems featuring fully reversible redox events with up to five stable oxidation states. We give spectroscopic and structural insight into the changes involved in the redox-events and present characterization data on all isolated oxidation states. The redox-systems feature strong UV/Vis/NIR polyelectrochromic properties such as distinct strong NIR absorptions in the mixed valence states. Two-electron charge-discharge cycling studies indicate high electrochemical stability at strongly negative potentials, rendering the new redox architectures promising lead structures for multi-electron anolyte materials.

Diamidocarbene-Based Thiele and Tschitschibabin Hydrocarbons: Carbonyl Functionalized Kekulé Diradicaloids

Herein, we report diamidocarbene (DAC)-based Thiele and Tschitschibabin hydrocarbons, diradicaloids that contain four carbonyl/amido functional groups. The impact of two different π-conjugated spacers, p-phenylene vs p,p'-biphenylene, has been realized. The quantum chemical calculations suggest diamidocarbene (DAC)-based Thiele hydrocarbon (p-phenylene bridged) closed-shell singlet is the ground state, whereas for the diamidocarbene (DAC)-based Tschitschibabin hydrocarbon (p,p'-biphenylene bridged), open-shell singlet is the ground state. The influence of two different π-conjugated spacers also has been reflected in their UV-vis spectra. To gain more information on the diamidocarbene (DAC)-based Thiele and Tschitschibabin hydrocarbons, we have also carried out cyclic voltammetry investigations along with UV-vis-NIR-spectroelectrochemical studies of their corresponding 2-e oxidized product.

peri-Acenoacene molecules: tuning of the singlet and triplet excitation energies by modifying their radical character

The energy difference between singlet and triplet excitons, or ΔE_ST, is a key parameter for novel light-emission mechanisms (i.e., TADF or thermally activated delayed fluorescence) or other photoactivated processes. We have studied a set of conjugated molecules (peri-acenoacenes and their heteroatom-doped analogues) to observe the evolution of their excited-state properties upon increasing the system size with and without substitution with a pair of N atoms. Since these molecules exhibit a (ground-state) diradicaloid character, together with marked correlation effects influencing the excited-states formed, we have applied a variety of theoretical methods (FT-DFT, TD-DFT, SF-TD-DFT, CIS, CIS(D), SCS-CC2, SA-CASSCF, and SC-NEVPT2) to bracket the accuracy of the results while concomitantly providing insights into electronic structure. The results show how this chemical strategy (N-doping) largely modifies not only the excited-state energies but also the oscillator strengths and the ΔE_ST values, constituting versatile platforms for fine-tuned photophysical applications.

Charge frustration in ligand design and functional group transfer

Molecules with different resonance structures of similar importance, such as heterocumulenes and mesoionics, are prominent in many applications of chemistry, including 'click chemistry', photochemistry, switching and sensing. In coordination chemistry, similar chameleonic/schizophrenic entities are referred to as ambidentate/ambiphilic or cooperative ligands. Examples of these had remained, for a long time, limited to a handful of archetypal compounds that were mere curiosities. In this Review, we describe ambiphilicity - or, rather, 'charge frustration' - as a general guiding principle for ligand design and functional group transfer. We first give a historical account of organic zwitterions and discuss their electronic structures and applications. Our discussion then focuses on zwitterionic ligands and their metal complexes, such as those of ylidic and redox-active ligands. Finally, we present new approaches to single-atom transfer using cumulated small molecules and outline emerging areas, such as bond activation and stable donor-acceptor ligand systems for reversible 1e^- chemistry or switching.

Women in the Singlet Fission World: Pearls in a Semi-Open Shell

Singlet fission, a multiple exciton generation process, can revolutionize existing solar cell technologies. Offering the possibility to double photocurrent, the process has become a focal point for physicists, chemists, software developers, and engineers. The following review is dedicated to the female investigators, predominantly theorists, who have contributed to the field of singlet fission. We highlight their most significant advances in the subject, from deciphering the mechanism of the process to designing coveted singlet fission materials.

Bright luminescent lithium and magnesium carbene complexes

We report on the convenient synthesis of a CNC pincer ligand composed of carbazole and two mesoionic carbenes, as well as the corresponding lithium- and magnesium complexes. Mono-deprotonation affords a rare "naked" amide anion. In contrast to the proligand and its mono-deprotonated form, tri-deprotonated s-block complexes show bright luminescence, and their photophysical properties were therefore investigated by absorption- and luminescence spectroscopy. They reveal a quantum yield of 16% in solution at ambient temperature. Detailed quantum-chemical calculations assist in rationalizing the emissive properties based on an Intra-Ligand-Charge-Transfer (ILCT) between the carbazolido- and mesoionic carbene ligands. (Earth-)alkali metals prevent the distortion of the ligand following excitation and, thus, by avoiding non-radiative deactivation support bright luminescence.

Directed Design of a AuI Complex with a Reduced Mesoionic Carbene Radical Ligand: Insights from 1,2,3-Triazolylidene Selenium Adducts and Extensive Electrochemical Investigations

Carbene-based radicals are important for both fundamental and applied chemical research. Herein, extensive electrochemical investigations of nine different 1,2,3-triazolylidene selenium adducts are reported. It is found that the half-wave potentials of the first reduction of the selones correlate with their calculated LUMO levels and the LUMO levels of the corresponding triazolylidene-based mesoionic carbenes (MICs). Furthermore, unexpected quasi-reversibility of the reduction of two triazoline selones, exhibiting comparable reduction potentials, was discovered. Through UV/Vis/NIR and EPR spectroelectrochemical investigations supported by DFT calculations, the radical anion was unambiguously assigned to be triazoline centered. This electrochemical behavior was transferred to a triazolylidene-type MIC-gold phenyl complex resulting in a MIC-radical coordinated AuI species. Apart from UV-Vis-NIR and EPR spectroelectrochemical investigations of the reduction, the reduced gold-coordinated MIC radical complex was also formed in situ in the bulk through chemical reduction. This is the first report of a monodentate triazolylidene-based MIC ligand that can be reduced to its anion radical in a metal complex. The results presented here provide design principles for stabilizing radicals based on MICs.

An Open-Shell Singlet SnI Diradical and H2 Splitting

The first Sn^I diradical [(ADC^Ph)Sn]₂ (4) based on an anionic dicarbene (ADC^Ph={CN(Dipp)}₂CPh; Dipp=2,6‐iPr₂C₆H₃) scaffold has been isolated as a green crystalline solid by KC₈ reduction of the corresponding bis‐chlorostannylene [(ADC^Ph)SnCl]₂ (3). The six‐membered C₄Sn₂‐ring of 4 containing six π‐electrons shows a diatropic ring current, thus 4 may also be regarded as the first 1,4‐distannabenzene derivative. DFT calculations suggest an open‐shell singlet (OS) ground state of 4 with a remarkably small singlet–triplet energy gap (ΔE_OS–T=4.4 kcal mol⁻¹), which is consistent with CASSCF (ΔE_S–T=6.6 kcal mol⁻¹ and diradical character y=37 %) calculations. The diradical 4 splits H₂ at room temperature to yield the bis‐hydridostannylene [(ADC^Ph)SnH]₂ (5). Further reactivity of 4 has been studied with PhSeSePh and MeOTf.

Unconventional singlet fission materials

Singlet fission (SF) is a photophysical downconversion pathway, in which a singlet excitation transforms into two triplet excited states. As such, it constitutes an exciton multiplication generation process, which is currently at the focal point for future integration into solar energy conversion devices. Beyond this, various other exciting applications were proposed, including quantum cryptography or organic light emitting diodes. Also, the mechanistic understanding evolved rapidly during the last year. Unfortunately, the number of suitable SF-chromophores is still limited. This is per se problematic, considering the wide range of envisaged applicability. With that in mind, we emphasize uncommon SF-scaffolds and outline requirements as well as strategies to expand the chromophore pool of SF-materials.

Theoretical study on the effect of applying an external static electric field on the singlet fission dynamics of pentacene dimer models

We investigate the effect of applying an external static electric field on the singlet fission (SF) dynamics of pentacene dimer models using quantum chemical calculations and exciton dynamics simulations. It is found that the excitation energies of anion-cation (AC) and cation-anion (CA) pair exciton states in the SF process are significantly stabilized and destabilized, respectively, by applying an external static electric field (F) in the intermolecular direction. As a result, this change of excitation energies is found to accelerate the SF dynamics in pentacene dimer models. In particular, in the tilted- and parallel-type pentacene dimer models, SF rates at F = 0.001 a.u. are predicted to be about 2.3 and 3.0 times as large as those at F = 0.0 a.u. while keeping the TT yields large. The present result contributes to paving the way for novel physical and chemical controls, that is, an external static electric field application and donor/acceptor substitution on SF molecules, of SF dynamics.

How to isolate small carbenes, previously reported to from dimers instantaneously, and how to split triaminoolefins into free carbenes.

Dibenzocycloheptatriene as end-group of Thiele and tetrabenzo-Chichibabin hydrocarbons

Thiele (Th) and tetrabenzo-Chichibabin (TBC) derivatives with terminal dibenzocycloheptatriene (DBHept) units were prepared. A clear correlation between their electronic and molecular structures was stablished. Insights into their closed- or open-shell ground states were gained, where particular contribution of the heptagonal carbocycles as end-groups was proved. Remarkably, a thermally accessible triplet diradical configuration was confirmed for the DBHept-TBC compound.

Acyclic diaminocarbene-based Thiele, Chichibabin, and Müller hydrocarbons

Thiele, Chichibabin and Müller hydrocarbons are considered as classical Kekulé diradicaloids. Herein we report the synthesis and characterization of acyclic diaminocarbene (ADC)-based Thiele, Chichibabin, and Müller hydrocarbons. The calculated singlet–triplet energy gaps are ΔE_S–T = −27.96, −3.70, −0.37 kcal mol⁻¹, respectively, and gradually decrease with the increasing length of the π-conjugated spacer (p-phenylene vs. p,p′-biphenylene vs. p,p′′-terphenylene) between the two ADC-scaffolds. In agreement with the calculations, we also experimentally observed the enhancement of paramagnetic diradical character as a function of the length of the π-conjugated spacer. ADC-based Thiele's hydrocarbon is EPR silent and exhibits very well resolved NMR spectra, whereas ADC-based Müller's hydrocarbon displays EPR signals and featureless NMR spectra at room temperature. The spacer also has a strong influence on the UV-Vis-NIR spectra of these compounds. Considering that our methodology is modular, these results provide a convenient platform for the synthesis of an electronically modified new class of carbon-centered Kekulé diradicaloids.

We report the synthesis of acyclic diaminocarbene (ADC)-scaffold based Thiele, Chichibabin, and Müller hydrocarbons. Studies support that the singlet-triplet energy gap depends on the π-conjugated spacer between the ADC scaffolds.

Theoretical Molecular Design of Phenanthrenes for Singlet Fission by Diazadibora-Substitution

Based on the valence configuration interaction (VCI) model and quantum chemical calculations, we theoretically investigate the potential of diazadibora-substituted phenanthrenes [(BN)₂-phenanthrenes] as novel singlet fission (SF) chromophores. (BN)₂-substitution to phenanthrene is performed to exhibit a captodative effect, which is found to enhance both diradical character and exchange integral. These enhanced parameters induced by (BN)₂-substitution are shown to bring energetically favorable SF with high triplet excitation energies. In order to reveal the relationship between diradical character and positions replaced by (BN)₂, analyses based on the VCI model, odd-electron density, and resonance structures are conducted. Accordingly, a concrete design principle, which is inherent in and is understandable from the topology of (BN)₂-phenanthrene, is presented. Furthermore, design strategies to fine-tuning of the diradical character are newly demonstrated based on the additional introduction of π-donor and π-acceptor. The present results provide feasible candidate molecules and novel design strategies toward the discovery of bright SF chromophores for the application to efficient organic solar cells.

Anomalous restoration of sp2 hybridization in graphene functionalization

The functionalization of nanocarbon materials such as graphene has attracted considerable attention over the past decades. In this work, we designed and synthesized a unique N-heterocyclic carbene compound with a pyrene tail group (NHCp) to investigate how carbene species can be used for the functionalization of graphene. Although the carbene moiety of NHCp has the ability to covalently bond to graphene, the pyrene tail can noncovalently interact with graphene and allows monitoring its surrounding microenvironment. The major characteristics of the resulting nanohybrids were highly dependent on the type of graphene and the NHCp-to-graphene weight ratio. Importantly, despite the covalent functionalization of graphene, an anomalous decrease in the intensity of the Raman D peak and improved conductivity were observed for the nanohybrids. It was found that the covalent bond of NHCp to the graphene edge may allow the hybridization of their orbitals, which affects electronic energy levels and alters the double resonance process that originates the D peak at the edge defect. Importantly, the NHCp compound can act as a π acceptor (not just as a σ donor) via the NHCp-graphene covalent bridge. This is the first report showing that the concept of π-backdonation can be realized in two-dimensional materials, such as graphene, and rationally designed carbene molecules can functionalize graphene without losing their beneficial sp2 hybridization characteristics.

Singlet Fission in Carbene-Derived Diradicaloids

Herein, we present a new class of singlet fission (SF) materials based on diradicaloids of carbene scaffolds, namely cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes (CAACs). Our modular approach allows the tuning of two key SF criteria: the steric factor and the diradical character. In turn, we modified the energy landscapes of excited states in a systematic manner to accommodate the needs for SF. We report the first example of intermolecular SF in solution by dimer self-assembly at cryogenic temperatures.

Aromaticity and sterics control whether a cationic olefin radical is resistant to disproportionation

We elucidate why some electron rich-olefins such as tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) or paraquat (1,1'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinylidene) form persistent radical cations, whereas others such as the dimer of N,N'-dimethyl benzimidazolin-2-ylidene (benzNHC) do not. Specifically, three heterodimers derived from cyclic (alkyl) (amino) carbenes (CAAC) with N,N'-dimethyl imidazolin-2-ylidene (NHC), N,N'-dimethyl imidazolidin-2-ylidene (saNHC) and N-methyl benzothiazolin-2-ylidene (btNHC) are reported. Whereas the olefin radical cations with the NHC and btNHC are isolable, the NHC compound with a saturated backbone (saNHC) disproportionates instead to the biscation and olefin. Furthermore, the electrochemical properties of the electron-rich olefins derived from the dimerization of the saNHC and btNHC were assessed. Based on the experiments, we propose a general computational method to model the electrochemical potentials and disproportionation equilibrium. This method, which achieves an accuracy of 0.07 V (0.06 V with calibration) in reference to the experimental values, allows for the first time to rationalize and predict the (in)stability of olefin radical cations towards disproportionation. The combined results reveal that the stability of heterodimeric olefin radical cations towards disproportionation is mostly due to aromaticity. In contrast, homodimeric radical cations are in principle isolable, if lacking steric bulk in the 2,2' positions of the heterocyclic monomers. Rigid tethers increase accordingly the stability of homodimeric radical cations, whereas the electronic effects of substituents seem much less important for the disproportionation equilibrium.

An Iron Pincer Complex in Four Oxidation States

The synthesis and characterization of a series of homoleptic iron complexes [Fe(^benzNHCOCO)₂]^2-/1-/0/1+ supported by the tridentate bis-aryloxide benzimidazolin-2-ylidene pincer ligand ^benzNHCOCO^2- (II) is presented. While the reaction of 2 equiv of free ligand II with a ferrous iron precursor leads to the isolation of the coordination polymer [Fe(^benzNHCOCOK)₂]_n (1), treatment of II with ferric iron salts allows for the synthesis and isolation of the mononuclear, octahedral bis-pincer compound K[Fe(^benzNHCOCO)₂] (2) and its crown-ether derivative [K(18c6)(THF)₂][Fe(^benzNHCOCO)₂] (3). Electrochemical studies of 2 suggested stable products upon further one- and two-electron oxidation. Hence, treatment of 2 with 1 equiv of AgPF₆ yields the charge-neutral species [Fe(^benzNHCOCO)₂] (4). Similarly, the cationic complex [Fe(^benzNHCOCO)₂]PF₆ (5) is obtained by addition of 2 equiv of AgPF₆. The characterization of complexes 1, 3, and 4 reveals iron-centered reduction and oxidation processes; thus, preserving the dianionic, closed-shell structure of both coordinated ^benzNHCOCO pincer chelates, II. This implies a stabilization of a highly Lewis acidic iron(IV) center by four phenolate anions rather than charge distribution across the ligand framework with a lower formal oxidation state at iron. Notably, the overall charge-neutral iron(IV) complex undergoes reductive elimination of the pincer ligand, providing a metal-free compound that can be described as a spirocyclic imidazolone ketal (6). In contrast, the ligand-metal bonds in 5, formally an iron(V) complex, are considerably covalent, rendering the assignment of its oxidation state challenging, if not impossible. All compounds are fully characterized, and the complexes' electronic structures were studied with a variety of spectroscopic and computational methods, including single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and zero-field ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, variable-field and variable-temperature superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetization measurements, and multi-reference ab initio (NEVPT2/CASSCF) as well as density functional theory (DFT) studies. Taken altogether, the electronic structure of 5 is best described as an iron(IV) center antiferromagnetically coupled to a ligand-centered radical.

CAAC-Based Thiele and Schlenk Hydrocarbons

Diradicals have been of tremendous interest for over a century ever since the first reports of p- and m-phenylene-bridged diphenylmethylradicals in 1904 by Thiele and 1915 by Schlenk. Reported here are the first examples of cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) analogues of Thiele's hydrocarbon, a Kekulé diradical, and Schlenk's hydrocarbon, a non-Kekulé diradical, without using CAAC as a precursor. The CAAC analogue of Thiele's hydrocarbon has a singlet ground state, whereas the CAAC analogue of Schlenk's hydrocarbon contains two unpaired electrons. The latter forms a dimer, by an intermolecular double head-to-tail dimerization. This straightforward synthetic methodology is modular and can be extended for the generation of redox-active organic compounds.

Fine-tuning the diradical character of molecular systems via the heteroatom effect

Heteroatoms were introduced as a novel modification strategy for fine-tuning the diradical character of molecular systems. Both the diradical character and the singlet-triplet energy gaps of diketopyrrolopyrrole based phenoxyl diradicaloids decreased as the size of the substituted heteroatoms (from O, S to Se atom) increased.

Saturated N-Heterocyclic Carbene Based Thiele's Hydrocarbon with a Tetrafluorophenylene Linker

The synthesis of a SIPr [1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-imidazolin-2-ylidene] derived Kekulé diradicaloid with a tetrafluorophenylene spacer (3) has been described. Two synthetic routes have been reported to access 3. The cleavage of C-F bond of C₆ F₆ by SIPr in the presence of BF₃ led to double C-F activated compound with two tetrafluoro borate counter anions (2), which upon reduction by lithium metal afforded 3. Alternatively, 3 can be directly accessed in one step by reacting SIPr with C₆ F₆ in presence of Mg metal. Compounds 2 and 3 were well characterized spectroscopically and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Experimental and computational studies support the cumulenic closed-shell singlet state of 3 with a singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔE_S-T ) of 23.7 kcal mol^-1 .

Rational magnetic modification of N,N-dioxidized pyrazine ring expanded adenine and thymine: a diradical character induced by base pairing and double protonation

Rational modification of biomolecules especially DNA base pairs for the theoretical design of molecular magnets has attracted extensive interest. In this work, we report a modification strategy for adenine/thymine-based magnets through introducing a N,N-dioxidized pyrazine ring to either adenine or thymine to form ring-expanded bases (noA/noT) based on their experimentally synthesized derivatives. Further functionalization is conducted by double protonation and pairing with a normal complementary base (nohA-T/nohT-A), respectively. The diversity of protonation sites in noA generates totally six nohA-Ts, together with nohT-A forming seven two-step modified topic base pairs. DFT calculations are performed to characterize the magnetic properties and the diradical character, which indicate three diamagnetic (DM) nohA-Ts and three antiferromagnetic (AFM) nohA-Ts with extremely large magnetic coupling constants J ranging from -1279.7 to -2807.4 cm-1, while a relatively mild AFM nohT-A with a J of -194.6 cm-1. The electron separation effect induced by attraction of positive charges originating from protonation is proposed to explain the diradicalization, which is different from the traditional radical-coupler-radical coupling mode. In addition, atomic natural charges and spin densities, and H-bond and molecular orbital analyses are further discussed for verification and deep understanding of the observed unique phenomena. It should be noted that our designed seven topic base pairs have excellent characters including a good synthetic basis, a large scope of the |J| values, and the AFM-DM magnetic conversion or AFM strength modulation controlled by protonation/deprotonation, prototropic tautomerization, base pairing/dissociation, single proton transfer, and even the applied electric field. All these indicate the promising applications in the field of magnetic information storage or switch control. This work highlights the magnetic modification schemes and possible modulation methods of double positive charge doped DNA base pairs by utilizing their potential spin coupling modes.

Design of singlet fission chromophores with cyclic (alkyl)(amino) carbene building blocks

We use MRSF-TDDFT and NEVPT2 methods to design singlet fission chromophores with the building blocks of cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes (CAACs). CAAC dimers with C₂, C₄, and p-phenylene spacers are considered. The substitutions with trifluoromethyls and fluorine atoms at the α C position are investigated. The electronegative substituents enhance the π accepting capability of the α C while maintaining it as a quaternary C atom. The phenylene-connected dimers with the two substitutions are identified as promising candidates for singlet fission chromophores. The cylindrically symmetric C₂ and C₄ spacers allow for substantial structural reorganizations in the S₀-to-S₁ and S₀-to-T₁ excitations. Although the two substituted dimers with the C₄ spacer satisfy (or very close to satisfy) the primary thermodynamics criterion for singlet fission, the significant structural reorganizations result in high barriers so that the fission is kinetically unfavorable.

Transmetalation from Magnesium–NHCs—Convenient Synthesis of Chelating π-Acidic NHC Complexes

The synthesis of chelating N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes with considerable π-acceptor properties can be a challenging task. This is due to the dimerization of free carbene ligands, the moisture sensitivity of reaction intermediates or reagents, and challenges associated with the workup procedure. Herein, we report a general route using transmetalation from magnesium–NHCs. Notably, this route gives access to transition-metal complexes in quantitative conversion without the formation of byproducts. It therefore produces transition-metal complexes outperforming the conventional routes based on free or lithium-coordinated carbene, silver complexes, or in situ metalation in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). We therefore propose transmetalation from magnesium–NHCs as a convenient and general route to obtain NHC complexes.

Nitrogen analogues of Chichibabin's and Müller's hydrocarbons with small singlet-triplet energy gaps

Nitrogen analogues of Chichibabin's and Müller's hydrocarbons, DPh-D and TPh-D, based on 1,2,4-benzotriazinyl (Blatter) were studied. The two diradicaloids with good chemical and thermal stability exhibit smaller singlet-triplet energy gaps (ΔES-T from -1.05 to -1.27 kcal mol-1) than the hydrocarbon diradicaloids with the same bridges.

Synthesis of aminyl biradicals by base-induced Csp3–Csp3 coupling of cationic azo dyes

Deprotonation of cationic azo dyes results in the formation of aminyl biradicals.

The synthesis of the industrially important polymer parylene is achieved by polymerization of p-quinodimethane (p-QDM). The polymerization is thought to proceed via a biradical p-QDM dimer, but isolation or characterization of such a biradical has remained elusive. Here, we describe the synthesis of an aza-analogue of this p-QDM dimer. The biradical is formed by base-induced dimerization of an azoimidazolium dye. Due to the presence of sterically shielded aminyl radicals instead of terminal H₂Ċ groups, the stability of this dimer is sufficient for analyses by ESR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. A similar Csp³–Csp³ coupling was observed for an azotriazolium dye, suggesting that base-induced C–C coupling reactions can be realized for different types of azo dyes.
