Abstract
BACKGROUND Coumarin is a natural bioactive compound found in many plants and acquires antibacterial, antioxidant and anticoagulant activities. The antibacterial activity of coumarin has never been tested after being encapsulated in liposomes. This study was carried out to screen the main functional components of Rubus canescens DC crude extract (CE), develop a coumarin nanoliposome, and test its anti-bacterial and antioxidant properties. METHODS R. canescens DC CE was screened for its main functional compounds using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Pure commercial coumarin was loaded into liposomes and characterized in terms of surface morphology, hydrodynamic diameter, zeta potential, and encapsulation efficiency (EE). The antioxidant activity of coumarin was evaluated against ascorbic acid. The antibacterial activity of both coumarin alone and liposome-encapsulated coumarin against Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhimurium, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa inoculated in soft white cheese (SWC) was also evaluated. RESULTS The predominant natural constituent of R. canescens DC CE, was coumarin. Comparing the DPPH scavenging activity of coumarin to that of ascorbic acid, coumarin exhibited an insignificant effect (p ≥ 0.05). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values for coumarin against P. aeruginosa, E. coli, Staph. aureus, S. typhimurium, and L. monocytogenes were 2.5, 2.5, 2.5, 1.25, and 1.25 µg/ml, respectively. The minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values for coumarin against these microorganisms were 5, 5, 5, 2.5, and 2.5 µg/ml, respectively. Coumarin was successfully loaded into nanoliposomes, which had a polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.36 ± 0.35 Đ, hydrodynamic diameter of 127.8 ± 0.3 nm, zeta-potential of -61.03 ± 2.9 mV, and EE of 40.93 ± 0.2%. Both the coumarin alone and the liposome loaded with coumarin showed antibacterial effects against the inoculated bacterial strains in SWC over a 30-day storage period at 4°C. CONCLUSIONS Coumarin was successfully formulated into a nanoliposome, and showed antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, and S. typhimurium.

Abstract
Campylobacter jejuni is a major cause of global foodborne illnesses. To develop alternative antimicrobial strategies against C. jejuni, this study designed and optimized the green synthesis of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) with intracellular components of the medicinal fungus Ganoderma sessile to provide the needed reducing and stabilizing agents. NPs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering, and the quasi-spherical NPs had sizes of 2.9 ± 0.9 nm for the copper oxide NPs and 14.7 ± 0.6 nm for the silver NPs. Surface charge assessment revealed zeta potentials of -21.0 ± 6.5 mV and -24.4 ± 7.9 mV for the copper oxide and silver NPs, respectively. The growth inhibition of C. jejuni by the NPs occurred through attachment to the outer cell membrane and subsequent intracellular internalization and resulted in minimum inhibitory concentrations of the silver NPs at 6 µg/mL and copper oxide NPs at 10 µg/mL. On the other hand, a differential ROS production caused by silver and copper NPs was observed. In summary, this research presents the first demonstration of using green synthesis with the medicinal fungus G. sessile to produce metallic NPs that effectively inhibit C. jejuni growth, providing a sustainable and effective approach to the traditional use of antimicrobials.

Abstract
Breast cancer is a complex and heterogeneous disease, encompassing various subtypes characterized by distinct molecular features, clinical behaviors, and treatment responses. Categorization of subtypes is based on the presence or absence of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), leading to subtypes such as luminal A, luminal B, HER2-positive, and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). TNBC, comprising around 20% of all breast cancers, lacks expression of ER, PR, and HER2 receptors, rendering it unresponsive to targeted therapies and presenting significant challenges in treatment. TNBC is associated with aggressive behavior, high rates of recurrence, and resistance to chemotherapy. Tumor initiation, progression, and treatment resistance in TNBC are attributed to breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs), which possess self-renewal, differentiation, and tumorigenic potential. Surface markers, self-renewal pathways (Notch, Wnt, Hedgehog signaling), apoptotic protein (Bcl-2), angiogenesis inhibition (VEGF inhibitors), and immune modulation (cytokines, immune checkpoint inhibitors) are among the key targets discussed in this review. However, targeting the BCSC subpopulation in TNBC presents challenges, including off-target effects, low solubility, and bioavailability of anti-BCSC agents. Nanoparticle-based therapies offer a promising approach to target various molecular pathways and cellular processes implicated in survival of BSCS in TNBC. In this review, we explore various nanocarrier-based approaches for targeting BCSCs in TNBC, aiming to overcome these challenges and improve treatment outcomes for TNBC patients. These nanoparticle-based therapeutic strategies hold promise for addressing the therapeutic gap in TNBC treatment by delivering targeted therapies to BCSCs while minimizing systemic toxicity and enhancing treatment efficacy.

Abstract
MAIN CONCLUSION This review has explored the importance of using a synergistic approach of nano-elicitation and hydroponics to improve plant growth and metabolite production. Furthermore, it emphasizes the significance of green nanotechnology and eco-friendly practices while utilizing this approach to promote the development of a sustainable agriculture system. Nano-elicitation stimulates metabolic processes in plants using nanoparticles (NPs) as elicitors. The stimulation of these biochemical processes can enhance plant yield and productivity, along with the production of secondary metabolites. Nanoparticles have garnered the attention of scientific community because of their unique characteristics, such as incredibly small size and large surface-to-volume ratio, which make them effective elicitors. Hydroponic systems, which optimize growing conditions to increase plant production, are typically used to study the effect of elicitors. By integrating these two approaches, the qualitative and quantitative output of plants can be increased while employing minimal resources. As the global demand for high-quality crops and bioactive compounds surges, embracing this synergistic approach alongside sustainable farming practices can pave the way for resilient agricultural systems, ensuring food security and fostering an eco-friendly environment.

Abstract
Pravastatin sodium (PVS) is a hypolipidemic drug with poor oral bioavailability due to the first-pass effect. Therefore, this study aims to formulate and evaluate transdermal patches containing PVS-loaded nanoemulsions (PVS-NEs) to increase PVS's hypolipidemic and hepatoprotective activities. PVS-NEs were prepared using the aqueous titration method, where oleic acid was chosen as an oil phase, and span 80 and tween 80 were used as surfactant and cosurfactant respectively. Droplet size (DS), polydispersity index (PDI), zeta potential (ZP), clarity, and thermodynamic stability of NEs were all characterized. Also, PVS-NEs (NE2) with 50% oil phase, 40% SC mix 2:1, and 10% water were selected as an optimum formula based on the results of DS (251 ± 16), PDI (0.4 ± 0.16), and ZP (-70 ± 10.4) to be incorporated into a transdermal patch, and PVS-NE2 loaded transdermal patches (PVS-NE2-TDPs) were prepared by solvent evaporation method. F1 patch with HPMC E15 and PVP K30 in a ratio of 3:1 represented satisfactory patch properties with good drug-excipients compatibility. Thus, it was selected as an optimum patch formula. The optimized F1 patch was characterized for thickness, moisture content, weight variation, and drug-excipients incompatibility. Therefore, it was subjected to ex vivo skin permeation and finally pharmacodynamic studies. Ex vivo permeation studies of F1 revealed that the cumulative amount of PVS permeated across rat skin was 271.66 ± 19 µg/cm2 in 72 h, and the pharmacodynamic studies demonstrated that the F1 patch was more effective in treating hyperlipidemia than PVS-TDP (control patch) based on both blood analysis and histopathological examination. .

Abstract
This study aims to develop a versatile intelligent packaging based on alginate (Alg) and anthocyanin (Ant) by incorporating bacterial cellulose nanocrystal-stabilized camellia oil Pickering emulsions. Firstly, bacterial cellulose nanocrystals (BCNs) matrix produced from kombucha was incorporated with camellia oil into via ultrasonic triggering, forming a stable and multifunctional camellia oil-bacterial cellulose nanocrystal Pickering nanoemulsions (CBPE). The microstructure and rheology results of the emulsion confirmed the stabilized preparation of CBPE. Subsequently, the CBPE was integrated into the three-dimensional network structure composed of alginate/anthocyanin. The composite film (Alg-Ant-CBPE) was designed through Ca2+ crosslinking, intermolecular hydrogen bonding and dehydration condensation. The fabricated color indicator films with different concentrations of CBPE (0.1 %-0.4 %), showed varying degree of improvement in hydrophobicity, UV shielding, mechanical strength, thermal stability, water vapor barrier properties and antioxidant capacities. When applied to yogurt, the Alg-Ant-CBPE4 exhibited more pronounced color changes compared to Alg-Ant, enabling visual detection of food freshness. In conclusion, the incorporation of Pickering nanoemulsion provides an effective and promising approach to enhance the performance of polysaccharide-based intelligent packaging.

Abstract
Menaquinone-7 (MK-7) is the most therapeutically valuable K vitamin owing to its excellent bioavailability. MK-7 occurs as geometric isomers, and only all-trans MK-7 is bioactive. The fermentation-based synthesis of MK-7 entails various challenges, primarily the low fermentation yield and numerous downstream processing steps. This raises the cost of production and translates to an expensive final product that is not widely accessible. Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) can potentially overcome these obstacles due to their ability to enhance fermentation productivity and enable process intensification. Nevertheless, utilisation of IONPs in this regard is only beneficial if the biologically active isomer is achieved in the greatest proportion, the investigation of which constituted the objective of this study. IONPs (Fe3O4) with an average size of 11 nm were synthesised and characterised using different analytical techniques, and their effect on isomer production and bacterial growth was assessed. The optimum IONP concentration (300 μg/mL) improved the process output and resulted in a 1.6-fold increase in the all-trans isomer yield compared to the control. This investigation was the first to evaluate the role of IONPs in the synthesis of MK-7 isomers, and its outcomes will assist the development of an efficient fermentation system that favours the production of bioactive MK-7.

Abstract
The growing nanoparticulate pollution (e.g. engineered nanoparticles (NPs) or nanoplastics) has been shown to pose potential threats to human health. In particular, sensitive populations such as pregnant women and their unborn children need to be protected from harmful environmental exposures. However, developmental toxicity from prenatal exposure to pollution particles is not yet well studied despite evidence of particle accumulation in human placenta. Our study aimed to investigate how copper oxide NPs (CuO NPs; 10-20 nm) and polystyrene nanoplastics (PS NPs; 70 nm) impact on gene expression in ex vivo perfused human placental tissue. Whole genome microarray analysis revealed changes in global gene expression profile after 6 h of perfusion with sub-cytotoxic concentrations of CuO (10 µg/mL) and PS NPs (25 µg/mL). Pathway and gene ontology enrichment analysis of the differentially expressed genes suggested that CuO and PS NPs trigger distinct cellular response in placental tissue. While CuO NPs induced pathways related to angiogenesis, protein misfolding and heat shock responses, PS NPs affected the expression of genes related to inflammation and iron homeostasis. The observed effects on protein misfolding, cytokine signaling, and hormones were corroborated by western blot (accumulation of polyubiquitinated proteins) or qPCR analysis. Overall, the results of the present study revealed extensive and material-specific interference of CuO and PS NPs with placental gene expression from a single short-term exposure which deserves increasing attention. In addition, the placenta, which is often neglected in developmental toxicity studies, should be a key focus in the future safety assessment of NPs in pregnancy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to achieve biocontrol of multidrug-resistant Listeria monocytogenes in dairy cattle farms which poses a severe threat to our socio-economic balance and healthcare systems. METHODS Naturally occurring phages from dairy cattle environments were isolated and characterized, and the antimicrobial effect of isolated L. monocytogenes phages (LMPs) against multidrug-resistant L. monocytogenes strains were assessed alone and in conjugation with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). RESULTS Six different phenotypic LMPs (LMP1-LMP6) were isolated from silage (n = 4; one by direct phage isolation and three by enrichment method) and manure (n = 2; both by enrichment method) from dairy cattle farms. The isolated phages were categorized into three different families by transmission electron microscopy (TEM): Siphoviridae (LMP1 and LMP5), Myoviridae (LMP2, LMP4, and LMP6), and Podoviridae (LMP3). The host range of the isolated LMPs was determined by the spot method using 22 multidrug-resistant L. monocytogenes strains. All 22 (100%) strains were susceptible to phage infection; 50% (3 out of 6) of the isolated phages showed narrow host ranges, while the other 50% showed moderate host ranges. We found that LMP3 (the phage with the shortest tail) had the ability to infect the widest range of L. monocytogenes strains. Eclipse and latent periods of LMP3 were 5 and 45 min, respectively. The burst size of LMP3 was 25 PFU per infected cell. LMP3 was stable with wide range of pH and temperature. In addition, time-kill curves of LMP3 alone at MOI of 10, 1 and 0.1, AgNPs alone, and LMP3 in combination with AgNPs against the most phage-resistant L. monocytogenes strain (ERIC A) were constructed. Among the five treatments, AgNPs alone had the lowest inhibition activity compared to LMP3 at a multiplicity of infection (MOI) of 0.1, 1, and 10. LMP3 at MOI of 0.1 in conjugation with AgNPs (10 µg/mL) exhibited complete inhibition activity after just 2 h, and the inhibition activity lasted for 24 h treatment. In contrast, the inhibition activity of AgNPs alone and phages alone, even at MOI of 10, stopped. Therefore, the combination of LMP3 and AgNPs enhanced the antimicrobial action and its stability and reduced the required concentrations of LMP3 and AgNPs, which would minimize the development of future resistance. CONCLUSIONS The results suggested that the combination of LMP3 and AgNPs could be used as a powerful and ecofriendly antibacterial agent in the dairy cattle farm environment to overcome multidrug-resistant L. monocytogenes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Numerous positive effects have been attributed to lutein, a lipophilic nutrient, including resisting ultraviolet radiation and protecting retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells against blue light damage. It also has preventive effects against cardiovascular disease and cancer. However, its use could be limited by its poor stability and low bioaccessibility in the human digestive system. An encapsulation delivery system was therefore developed to resolve these limitations. In this study, chitosan-modified lutein nanoliposomes (CS-LNLs), chitosan-EGCG covalently modified lutein nanoliposomes (C-CS-EGCG-LNLs), and chitosan-EGCG noncovalently modified lutein nanoliposomes (non-C-CS-EGCG-LNLs) were designed. The average particle size, ζ-potential, and retention of lutein during storage were measured to indicate the physicochemical stability of the modified lutein nanoliposomes. The bioaccessibility of modified lutein nanoliposomes was also investigated to demonstrate the availability of lutein in the human digestive system. RESULTS First, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) verified that covalent bonds between chitosan and EGCG were formed. Subsequently, ζ-potential results revealed that C-CS-EGCG-LNLs had a relatively stable structure in comparison with lutein nanoliposomes (LNLs). The retention rate of lutein in CS-LNLs, C-CS-EGCG-LNLs, and non-C-CS-EGCG-LNLs was improved, especially in C-CS-EGCG-LNLs (at around 70% of lutein in initial system). An in vitro digestion experiment illustrated that CS-LNLs, C-CS-EGCG-LNLs, and non-C-CS-EGCG-LNLs presented relatively higher bioaccessibility, especially in C-CS-EGCG-LNLs (at around 33% of luein in initial system), which increased 2.5 and 1.65 times in comparison with free lutein and LNLs, respectively. CONCLUSION Overall, the results showed that C-CS-EGCG-LNLs presented greater physicochemical stability and bioaccessibility than LNLs, CS-LNLs, and non-C-CS-EGCG-LNLs. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Over the course of the last several decades, nanotechnology has garnered a growing amount of attention as a potentially valuable technology that has significantly impacted the food industry. Nanotechnology helps in enhancing the properties of materials and structures that are used in various fields such as agriculture, food, pharmacy, and so on. Applications of nanotechnology in the food market have included the encapsulation and distribution of materials to specific locations, the improvement of flavor, the introduction of antibacterial nanoparticles into food, the betterment of prolonged storage, the detection of pollutants, enhanced storage facilities, locating, identifying, as well as consumer awareness. Labeling food goods with nano barcodes helps ensure their security and may also be used to track their distribution. This review article presents a discussion about current advances in nanotechnology along with its applications in the field of food-tech, food packaging, food security, enhancing life of food products, etc. A detailed description is provided about various synthesis routes of nanomaterials, that is, chemical, physical, and biological methods. Nanotechnology is a rapidly improving the field of food packaging and the future holds great opportunities for more enhancement via the development of new nanomaterials and nanosensors.

Abstract
The potential of nanotechnology for the development of sustainable agriculture has been promising. The initiatives to meet the rising food needs of the rapidly growing world population are mainly powered by sustainable agriculture. Nanoparticles are used in agriculture due to their distinct physicochemical characteristics. The interaction of nanomaterials with soil components is strongly determined in terms of soil quality and plant growth. Numerous research has been carried out to investigate how nanoparticles affect the growth and development of plants. Nanotechnology has been applied to improve the quality and reduce post-harvest loss of agricultural products by extending their shelf life, particularly for fruits and vegetables. This review assesses the latest literature on nanotechnology, which is used as a nano-biofertilizer as seen in the agricultural field for high productivity and better growth of plants, an important source of balanced nutrition for the crop, seed germination, and quality enrichment. Additionally, post-harvest food processing and packaging can benefit greatly from the use of nanotechnology to cut down on food waste and contamination. It also critically discusses the mechanisms involved in nanoparticle absorption and translocation within the plants and the synthesis of green nanoparticles.

Abstract
The application of metallic nanoparticles poses risks to human and animal health. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) are the most commonly synthesized metallic oxides in the world. Exposure to TiO2NPs can cause toxicity in the target organisms. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of green and chemical TiO2NPs on maternal and embryo-fetal livers. Green TiO2NPs using garlic extract (GTiO2NPs) and chemical TiO2NPs (CHTiO2NPs) were synthesized and characterized by x-ray powder diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The cytotoxicity of both chemical and green TiO2NPs was determined against HepG2 cell lines. Fifty pregnant female Albino rats were equally and randomly divided into five groups. Group 1 was kept as a control. Groups 2 and 3 were orally treated with 100 and 300 mg/kg body weight of CHTiO2NPs, respectively. Groups 4 and 5 were orally treated with 100 and 300 mg/kg of GTiO2NPs, respectively, from day 6 to 19 of gestation. All dams were euthanized on gestation day 20. All live fetuses were weighed and euthanized. Blood and tissue samples were collected for biochemical, histopathological, and Bax-immunohistochemical expression analyses. Our results indicated that garlic could be used as a reducing agent for the synthesis of TiO2NPs, and the produced NPs have no toxic effect against HepG2 cells compared with CHTiO2NPs. The maternal and fetal bodyweights were greatly reduced among the chemically TiO2NPs induced animals. The mean serum level of AST and ALT activities and the total protein level significantly increased when TiO2NPs were administered at high doses. Histologically, the CHTiO2NPs-treated groups revealed vacuolated and necrotized hepatocytes with congested and dilated blood vessels in the fetal and maternal livers. The immunohistochemistry revealed distinct positive staining of Bax expressed in the hepatocytes. Nevertheless, the biosynthesis of TiO2NPs using garlic extract had a minimal effect on the normal architecture of the liver. It could be concluded that the bioactivity of TiO2NPs can be modified by green synthesis using garlic extract. Compared to the CHTiO2NPs, the exposure to GTiO2NPs showed reduced liver damage in maternal and embryo-fetal rats.

Abstract
In this study, ZnO nanoparticles were prepared by a hydrothermal method with varying the reaction times, material ratios and reaction temperatures. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It was shown that the material ratio significantly affected the structure and morphology of the synthesized ZnO nanoparticles, and then the uneven nano-octahedral structure, uniform nano-octahedral structure, nano-tubular structure, and nano-sheet structure could be obtained successively. The synthesized ZnO nanoparticles as mordant were used for the dyeing of silk fabrics with different natural dyes (tea polyphenols and hematoxylin). Moreover, they could improve the dyeing properties and fastness (wash and light) on silk fabrics to a certain extent.

Abstract
Background: Nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO-NPs) have recently been utilized in various advanced industrial fields like lithium-ion micro batteries, nanofibers, electrochromic devices, and several biomedical applications. NiO-NPs are classified as extremely toxic substances as they can cause long-term harm to the environment and aquatic life. Moreover, frequent and prolonged exposure can affect human and animal health, causing skin allergies and major toxic consequences, such as hepatorenal toxicity. Hesperidin (HSP) has been proven to possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and free radical scavenging activities. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the underlying protective mechanisms and effects of HSP against NiO-NPs-induced hepatorenal toxicities in rats. Materials and Methods: Forty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups (n = 10 in each). The first group served as a Control group. For 8 weeks, the second group was administered NiO-NPs (100 mg/kg/day), and the third group was given HSP (100 mg/kg/day) via oral gavage for both groups. The fourth group received NiO-NPs and HSP concurrently in the same oral daily doses and duration as the second and third groups. Results: NiO-NPs administration revealed a significant increase in plasma biomarkers of nephrotoxicity (urea, creatinine) and hepatotoxicity (ALT, AST) in NiO-NPs group compared to Control group (p < 0.05). In addition, NiO-NPs administration resulted in a substantial increase in malondialdehyde levels with a significant drop in catalase activity and GSH content in Group II. Also, a significant decreased expression of Nrf-2 and Bcl-2 mRNA levels and upregulation of TNF-α, NF-kβ and BAX in the liver and kidney of NiO-NPs group were also detected. Histologically, the liver and kidney of rats of NiO-NPs group showed significant histopathological disturbances, with a substantial increase in the proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) positive hepatocytes and renal tubular cells in the NiO-NPs group compared to Control and HSP groups (p < 0.05). In contrast, concomitant administration of HSP with NiO-NPs in group IV showed a significant biochemical, histopathological, and immunohistochemical improvement compared to NiO-NPs group. Conclusion: Co-administration of HSP with NiO-NPs significantly ameliorated most of the NiO-NPs-induced hepatorenal toxicities in male rats.

Abstract
Technological improvements in dietary supplements and nutraceuticals have highlighted the significance of bioactive molecules in a healthy lifestyle. Eicosapentaenoic acid and Cervonic acid (DHA), omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids seem to be famed for their ability to prevent diverse physiological abnormalities. Selection of appropriate pretreatments and extraction techniques for extraction of lipids from robust microalgae cell wall are very important to retain their stability and bioactivity. Therefore, extraction techniques with optimized extraction parameters offer an excellent approach for obtaining quality oil with a high yield. Oils enriched in omega-3 are particularly imperiled to oxidation which ultimately affects customer acceptance. Bio active encapsulation could be one of the effective approaches to overcome this dilemma. This review paper aims to give insight into the cultivation methods, and downstream processes, various lipid extraction approaches, techniques for retaining oxidative stability, bioavailability and food applications based on extracted or encapsulated omega-3.

Abstract
Background The application of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) as food additives poses a risk of oral exposure that may lead to adverse health effects. Even though the substantial evidence supported liver as the target organ of TiO2 NPs via oral exposure, the mechanism of liver toxicity remains largely unknown. Since the liver is a key organ for lipid metabolism, this study focused on the landscape of lipidomic metabolites in gut-liver axis of Sprague Dawley (SD) rats exposed to TiO2 NPs at 0, 2, 10, 50 mg/kg body weight per day for 90 days. Results TiO2 NPs (50 mg/kg) caused slight hepatotoxicity and changed lipidomic signatures of main organs or systems in the gut-liver axis including liver, serum and gut. The cluster profile from the above biological samples all pointed to the same key metabolic pathway and metabolites, which was glycerophospholipid metabolism and Phosphatidylcholines (PCs), respectively. In addition, absolute quantitative lipidomics verified the changes of three PCs concentrations, including PC (16:0/20:1), PC (18:0/18:0) and PC (18:2/20:2) in the serum samples after treatment of TiO2 NPs (50 mg/kg). The contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) in serum and liver increased significantly, which were positively correlated with most differential lipophilic metabolites. Conclusions The gut was presumed to be the original site of oxidative stress and disorder of lipid metabolism, which resulted in hepatotoxicity through the gut-liver axis. Lipid peroxidation may be the initial step of lipid metabolism disorder induced by TiO2 NPs. Most nanomaterials (NMs) have oxidation induction and antibacterial properties, so the toxic pathway revealed in the present study may be primary and universal. Abstract
This article investigates and presents the upshots observed in the brook of hybrid composites especially, the current investigation focuses on the impact of fiber composition, sequence, and stacking pattern on composite mechanical Features. Five varied stacking sequences of hybrid composites encompassing laminates are used to create four classes of fiber with jute/bamboo/glass by utilizing a conscientious hand lay-up process with glass fiber-laced mats as their peripheral layer. For examination, fiber sequences are arranged in the combination of GJBJG, GBJBG, GJGJG, and GBGBG, where G, J, and B refer to glass fiber, jute fiber, and bamboo fiber, respectively. The position of fiber in the core layer is kept in a perpendicular direction with respect to adjacent piles which might be jute or bamboo fiber and the best position of fiber is considered due to the stacking order. Stress and strain were linear in the load versus deflection curves, and all of the samples failed quickly, it is observed that the sample containing a higher or considerable number of bamboo fiber layers exhibited increased strain and toughness. In comparison to other samples, embolism of glass fiber as the main and covering layer expressed a higher impact on the mechanical properties of the composites is observed in this investigation. The shattered sample morphology demonstrated that the matrix and reinforcements were compatible.

Abstract
Background. Food nanopackaging helps maintain food quality against physical, chemical, and storage instability factors. Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) can improve biopolymers' mechanical features and barrier properties. This will lead to antimicrobial and antioxidant activities in food packaging to extend the shelf life. Scope and Approach. Edible coatings based on carbohydrate biopolymers have improved the quality of packaging. Several studies have addressed the role of carbohydrate biopolymers and incorporated nanoparticles to enhance food packets' quality as active nanopackaging. Combined with nanoparticles, these biopolymers create film coatings with an excellent barrier property against transmissions of gases such as O2 and CO2. Key Findings and Conclusions. This review describes the CuO-biopolymer composites, including chitosan, agar, cellulose, carboxymethylcellulose, cellulose nanowhiskers, carrageenan, alginate, starch, and polylactic acid, as food packaging films. Here, we reviewed different fabrication techniques of CuO biocomposites and the impact of CuONPs on the physical, mechanical, barrier, thermal stability, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties of carbohydrate-based films.

Abstract
Gum tragacanth nanoparticles were prepared using a combination of intense ultrasound energy and anti-solvent precipitation methods in this research. Results showed that smaller particles were produced by increasing sonication time. As well, increasing the sonication power led to smaller particles, however, increased aggregation. Accordingly, tragacanth solutions with 0.5 and 1% (w/v) concentrations were prepared and mixed with ethanol (ratio 1:10 v/v) after ultrasound treatment with two different drop-wise and direct methods to investigate the effect of anti-solvent addition method on the precipitation of tragacanth particles. The nanoparticle images showed that the concentration of the 0.5% tragacanth solution and the direct mixing method was suitable for particle production with desirable size (72 ± 10 nm) and uniformity. FTIR, XRD, and STA studies showed that the tragacanth chemical composition did not change, and only its particle size decreased. Investigation of wettability showed a contact angle of 88.9 ± 1.7 degrees for nanoparticles providing partial wetting of the particles at the interface. Investigation of the solution viscosities of 0.5% tragacanth gum and tragacanth nanoparticles showed that the viscosity of the nanoparticles solution was significantly lower than that of the tragacanth (p < 0.05) indicating the intense effect of ultrasonication on this property. It can be concluded that the high viscosity of tragacanth gum is not due to its chemical composition but is due to its complex structure.

Abstract
Nanomaterials exist as potential biocompatible materials in nature and are being synthesized to provide extraordinary characteristics in various food industry sectors. Synthesis of biocompatible nanomaterials requires modification in the shape, density, and size of nanomaterials. Biocompatible nanomaterials are synthesized to reduce toxicity, decrease adverse effects in the gastrointestinal tract, and enhance immune response. Nanomaterials can target organs and tissues. Nanomaterials are found to be effectively compatible by interacting with functional foods and nutraceuticals. Applications of these nanomaterials are novel strategies in food industries such as food safety, food processing, food quality, food packaging, and food labeling. Various functions like detection of toxins and pathogens; production of biocompatible packaging; enhancement in color, flavor, and aroma; processing edible film, and sensing authenticity of food product are being accomplished with no toxicity. This review provides a systematic study on the biocompatibility of nanomaterials. It highlights the synthesis of biocompatible nanomaterials and advanced functions of these nanomaterials in the production area, processing industry, safety improvement, quality control, edible packaging films, biocompatibility, current developments, legislations and regulations for Nano-products, health and safety concerns, toxicity and public perceptions for use of nanomaterials.

Abstract
Ensuring food security in developing countries is highly challenging due to low productivity of the agriculture sector, degradation of natural resources, high post farming losses, less or no value addition, and high population growth. Researchers are striving to adopt newer technologies to enhance supply to narrow the food demand gap. Nanotechnology is one of the promising technologies that could improve agricultural productivity via nano fertilizers, use of efficient herbicides and pesticides, soil feature regulation, wastewater management, and pathogen detection. It is equally beneficial for industrial food processing with enhanced food production with excellent market value, elevated nutritional and sensing property, improved safety, and better antimicrobial protection. Nanotechnology can also reduce post-farming losses by increasing the shelf life with the aid of nanoparticles. However, further investigation is required to solve the safety and health risks associated with the technology.

Abstract
Bio-based nanotechnology has its existence in biological dimensions e.g. microbial cell factories (bacteria, fungi. algae, yeast, cyanobacteria) plants, and biopolymers. They provide multipurpose biological platforms to supply well-designed materials for diverse nano-biotechnological applications. The "green or bio-based synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs)" has witnessed a research outburst in the past decade. The bio-based synthesis of NPs using microbial cell factories is a benign process and requires mild conditions for the synthesis with end products being less/non-toxic. As a result, its application has extended in multitudinous industries including environment, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical. Thus, the present review summarizes all the significant aspects of nanotechnology and the reason to switch towards the bio-based synthesis of NPs using microbial cell factories. It consists of a detailed description of the bio-based methods employed for the synthesis and classification of NPs. Also, a comprehensive study on the application of bio-based NPs in the various industrial and biotechnological domains has been discussed. The limitation and its solution would help identify the applicability of NPs to "identified and unidentified" sectors.

Abstract
A wide variety of foods manufactured by nanotechnology are commercially available on the market and labeled as nanoproducts. However, it is challenging to determine the presence of nanoparticles (NPs) in complex food matrices and processed foods. In this study, top-down-approach-produced (TD)-NP products and nanobubble waters (NBWs) were chosen as representative powdered and liquid nanoproducts, respectively. The characterization and determination of NPs in TD-NP products and NBWs were carried out by measuring constituent particle sizes, hydrodynamic diameters, zeta potentials, and surface chemistry. The results show that most NBWs had different characteristics compared with those of conventional sparkling waters, but nanobubbles were unstable during storage. On the other hand, powdered TD-NP products were found to be highly aggregated, and the constituent particle sizes less than 100 nm were remarkably observed after dispersion compared with counterpart conventional bulk-sized products by scanning electron microscopy at low acceleration voltage and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy. The differences in chemical composition and chemical state between TD-NPs and their counterpart conventional bulk products were also found by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. These findings will provide basic information about the presence of NPs in nano-labeled products and be useful to understand and predict the potential toxicity of NPs applied to the food industry.

Over the past decade, there has been an increasing demand for “ready-to-cook” and “ready-to-eat” foods, encouraging food producers, food suppliers, and food scientists to package foods with minimal processing and loss of nutrients during food processing. Following the increasing trend in the customer’s demands for minimally processed foodstuffs, this underscores the importance of promising interests toward industrial applications of novel and practical approaches in food. Along with substantial progress in the emergence of “nanoscience”, which has turned into the call of the century, the efficacy of conventional packaging has faded away. Accordingly, there is a wide range of new types of packaging, including electronic packaging machines, flexible packaging, sterile packaging, metal containers, aluminum foil, and flexographic printing. Hence, it has been demonstrated that these novel approaches can economically improve food safety and quality, decrease the microbial load of foodborne pathogens, and reduce food spoilage. This review study provides a comprehensive overview of the most common chemical or natural nanocomposites used in food packaging that can extend food shelf life, safety and quality. Finally, we discuss applying materials in the production of active and intelligent food packaging nanocomposite, synthesis of nanomaterial, and their effects on human health.

Abstract
The synthesis and assembly of nanoparticles using green technology has been an excellent option in nanotechnology because they are easy to implement, cost-efficient, eco-friendly, risk-free, and amenable to scaling up. They also do not require sophisticated equipment nor well-trained professionals. Bionanotechnology involves various biological systems as suitable nanofactories, including biomolecules, bacteria, fungi, yeasts, and plants. Biologically inspired nanomaterial fabrication approaches have shown great potential to interconnect microbial or plant extract biotechnology and nanotechnology. The present article extensively reviews the eco-friendly production of metalloid nanoparticles, namely made of selenium (SeNPs) and tellurium (TeNPs), using various microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi, and plants' extracts. It also discusses the methodologies followed by materials scientists and highlights the impact of the experimental sets on the outcomes and shed light on the underlying mechanisms. Moreover, it features the unique properties displayed by these biogenic nanoparticles for a large range of emerging applications in medicine, agriculture, bioengineering, and bioremediation.

Abstract
Microalgae are microorganisms with a singular biochemical composition, including several biologically active compounds with proven pharmacological activities, such as anticancer, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, among others. These properties make microalgae an interesting natural resource to be used as a functional ingredient, as well as in the prevention and treatment of diseases, or cosmetic formulations. Nevertheless, natural bioactives often possess inherent chemical instability and/or poor solubility, which are usually associated with low bioavailability. As such, their industrial potential as a health-promoting substance might be severely compromised. In this context, encapsulation systems are considered as a promising and emerging strategy to overcome these shortcomings due to the presence of a surrounding protective layer. Diverse systems have already been reported in the literature for natural bioactives, where some of them have been successfully applied to microalgae compounds. Therefore, this review focuses on exploring encapsulation systems for microalgae biomass, their extracts, or purified bioactives for food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic purposes. Moreover, this work also covers the most common encapsulation techniques and types of coating materials used, along with the main findings regarding the beneficial effects of these systems.

Abstract
The unique properties of nanoparticles produced during food thermal processing have attracted considerable attention. In this study, the formation of protein coronas of fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) in roast beef with human serum albumin (HSA) and the corona effect on toxicity were reported. The CDs were roughly spherical with a size in the range of 1-5 nm, which were mainly composed of carbon (68.68%), nitrogen (10.6%), and oxygen (15.98%). The CDs could readily pass through the intestine wall due to their small size and good water solubility. There was an obvious interaction between HSA and CDs, suggesting that the CDs could form protein coronas. Thermodynamic analysis results of ΔH < 0 (-13.17 ± 3.74 kJ/mol) and ΔS > 0 ( 28.04 J/mol/K) indicated that the binding of HSA-CDs was due to electrostatic interactions or hydrophobic forces. The HSA-CD coronas were distributed in the lysosomes of the cells, alleviated swelling caused by the CDs, and inhibited the decrease of mitochondrial membrane potential caused by CDs. Furthermore, the protein coronas reduced cellular reactive oxygen species production and alleviated the consumption of glutathione by the CDs, thus protecting the cells from damage. This finding provided valuable information about protein coronas in ameliorating cytotoxicity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epidemiological and animal studies provide compelling indications that environmental and engineered nanomaterials (NMs) pose a risk for pregnancy, fetal development and offspring health later in life. Understanding the origin and mechanisms underlying NM-induced developmental toxicity will be a cornerstone in the protection of sensitive populations and the design of safe and sustainable nanotechnology applications. MAIN BODY Direct toxicity originating from NMs crossing the placental barrier is frequently assumed to be the key pathway in developmental toxicity. However, placental transfer of particles is often highly limited, and evidence is growing that NMs can also indirectly interfere with fetal development. Here, we outline current knowledge on potential indirect mechanisms in developmental toxicity of NMs. SHORT CONCLUSION Until now, research on developmental toxicity has mainly focused on the biodistribution and placental translocation of NMs to the fetus to delineate underlying processes. Systematic research addressing NM impact on maternal and placental tissues as potential contributors to mechanistic pathways in developmental toxicity is only slowly gathering momentum. So far, maternal and placental oxidative stress and inflammation, activation of placental toll-like receptors (TLRs), impairment of placental growth and secretion of placental hormones, and vascular factors have been suggested to mediate indirect developmental toxicity of NMs. Therefore, NM effects on maternal and placental tissue function ought to be comprehensively evaluated in addition to placental transfer in the design of future studies of developmental toxicity and risk assessment of NM exposure during pregnancy.

Abstract
Bioengineers have mastered practical techniques for tuning a biomaterial's properties with only limited information on the relationship between the material's structure and function. These techniques have been quintessential to engineering proteins, which are most often riddled with ill-defined structure-function relationships. In this Perspective, we review bioengineering approaches aimed at overcoming the elusive protein structure-function relation. We extend these principles to engineering synthetic nanomaterials, specifically applying the underlying theory to optical sensors based on single-stranded DNA-wrapped single-walled carbon nanotubes (ssDNA-SWCNTs). Bioengineering techniques such as directed evolution, computational design, and noncanonical synthesis are reviewed in the broader context of nanomaterials engineering. We further provide an order-of-magnitude analysis of empirical approaches that rely on random or guided searches for designing new nanomaterials. The underlying concepts presented in these approaches can be further extended to a broad range of engineering fields confronted with empirical design strategies, including catalysis, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), pharmaceutical dosing, and optimization algorithms.

Abstract
The current global population is nearly 6 billion; due to this rapid population growth, there is a need to produce food in a more efficient, safe, and sustainable way, and it should be safe from the adverse effects of pathogenic organisms. A large proportion of population living in developing countries face daily food shortages as a result of environmental impacts or some other reasons like political instability, etc., while in the developed countries, food is surplus. For developing countries, the objective is to develop drought- and pest-resistant crops, with maximized yield. In developed countries, the food industry depends on consumer’s demand for fresher and healthier foodstuffs. The present chapter describes the use of nanoparticles in food science.

Abstract
Nanotechnology is a key advanced technology enabling contribution, development, and sustainable impact on food, medicine, and agriculture sectors. Nanomaterials have potential to lead qualitative and quantitative production of healthier, safer, and high-quality functional foods which are perishable or semi-perishable in nature. Nanotechnologies are superior than conventional food processing technologies with increased shelf life of food products, preventing contamination, and production of enhanced food quality. This comprehensive review on nanotechnologies for functional food development describes the current trends and future perspectives of advanced nanomaterials in food sector considering processing, packaging, security, and storage. Applications of nanotechnologies enhance the food bioavailability, taste, texture, and consistency, achieved through modification of particle size, possible cluster formation, and surface charge of food nanomaterials. In addition, the nanodelivery-mediated nutraceuticals, synergistic action of nanomaterials in food protection, and the application of nanosensors in smart food packaging for monitoring the quality of the stored foods and the common methods employed for assessing the impact of nanomaterials in biological systems are also discussed.

Abstract
The efficient progress in nanotechnology has transformed many aspects of food science and the food industry with enhanced investment and market share. Recent advances in nanomaterials and nanodevices such as nanosensors, nano-emulsions, nanopesticides or nanocapsules are intended to bring about innovative applications in the food industry. In this review, the current applications of nanotechnology for packaging, processing, and the enhancement of the nutritional value and shelf life of foods are targeted. In addition, the functionality and applicability of food-related nanotechnologies are also highlighted and critically discussed in order to provide an insight into the development and evaluation of the safety of nanotechnology in the food industry.

Abstract
Nanotechnology is one of the most promising future technologies for the food industry. Some of its applications have already been introduced in analytical techniques and food packaging technologies. This review summarizes existing knowledge about the implementation of nanotechnology in wine laboratory procedures. The focus is mainly on recent advancements in the design and development of nanomaterial-based sensors for wine compounds analysis and assessing wine safety. Nanotechnological approaches could be useful in the wine production process, to simplify wine analysis methods, and to improve the quality and safety of the final product.

Abstract
Despite the increasing use of nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticles (NPs), limited information is available on their toxicological effects. Health consequences of 28 days repeated oral exposure to NiO NPs have not been explored thoroughly. Hence, toxicity investigations were performed after 28-day daily exposure in albino Wistar rats with NiO NPs following Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development test guideline 407. Histopathology, biochemical indices including oxidative stress and biodistribution patterns were evaluated to decipher the toxicological impact of NiO NPs. NiO NP characterization by transmission electron microscopy showed an average size of 12.9 (±3.4) nm. Histological studies depicted a prominent impact on the vital organs of the rats. A dose-dependent rise in both aminotransferase enzyme values was recorded in the homogenates of liver and kidney tissues. A significant decrease in superoxide dismutase activity and increase in catalase activity was noted. Further, a dose-dependent decrease in reduced glutathione content was recorded in rats, which suggested generation of reactive oxygen species and oxidative stress. Increase in the malondialdehyde levels was observed with an increase in the dose substantiating the antioxidant enzyme activity profiles. Biodistribution studies indicated maximum accumulation of Ni content in liver followed by kidney. Excretion of Ni was predominantly through feces and a little through renal clearance. Our study indicated that NiO NPs adversely alter the biochemical profile of the rats and cause histological damage. Further investigations are warranted to address the mechanism by which physiological path these NiO NPs exhibit their toxic nature in in vivo.

Abstract
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) are produced abundantly and are frequently used as a white pigment in the manufacture of paints, foods, paper, and toothpaste. Despite the wide ranges of uses, there is a lack of information on the impact of NPs on animal and human health. In the present study, rats were exposed to different doses of TiO2 nanoparticles and sacrificed, respectively, 4 days, 1 month, and 2 months after treatment. Dosage of TiO2 in tissues was performed by ICP-AES and revealed an important accumulation of TiO2 in the liver. The nanoparticles induced morphological and physiological alterations in liver and kidney. In the liver, these alterations mainly affect the hepatocytes located around the centrilobular veins. These cells were the site of an oxidative stress evidenced by immunocytochemical detection of 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE). Kupffer cells are also the site of an important oxidative stress following the massive internalization of TiO2 nanoparticles. Enzymatic markers of liver and kidney functions (such as AST and uric acid) are also disrupted only in animals exposed to highest doses. The metabonomic approach allowed us to detect modifications in urine samples already detectable after 4 days in animals treated at the lowest dose. This metabonomic pattern testifies an oxidative stress as well as renal and hepatic alterations.

Abstract
Nanotechnology is a new subject of interest in the field of food industry. Therefore, scientific and technological studies have been intensified in the last 10 years because of the promising results associated with the potential application of functional properties in food products, such as physical and chemical stability, protection and controlled release of bioactive compounds, and facilitated solubility of lipophilic compounds. Lipids have been used as raw material for the preparation of nanostructures, mainly owing to the solubilization capacity of lipophilic bioactive compounds, as well as because of the advantage of potentially using natural ingredients for production on an industrial scale. Thus, in this review, we describe the information reported in scientific literature on the chemical, physical, and structural properties of lipids used in the preparation of solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) and nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs). We reviewed the production methods; structural lipid components; emulsifying systems; bioactive lipophilic compounds; and the physical, thermal, and oxidative properties of SLN and NLC. In addition, important methods for characterizing these systems with regard to particle size, polydispersity index, zeta potential, morphology, crystallization behavior, and polymorphism are discussed with examples, in order to support studies that consider physical stability during processing and storage. Furthermore, studies on the applications of SLNs and NLCs in foods are only found for model systems, justifying the compilation of a series of studies on the potential applications to encourage future works. In addition, we have described the aspects still under discussion, related to the possible risks and regulatory aspects of nanotechnology in food.

Abstract
Oils are very important substances in human nutrition. However, they are sensitive to oxygen, heat, moisture, and light. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the modification technology of oils. Methods that modify oil characteristics and make oils suitable applications have been increasingly studied. Nanotechnology has become one of the most promising studied technologies that could revolutionize conventional food science and the food industry. Oil nanoencapsulation could be a promising alternative to increase the stability and improve the bioavailability of nanoencapsulated compounds. The occurrence of oil nanoencapsulation has been rapidly increasing, especially in the food industry. Conventional nanoencapsulation technologies applied in different oils exert a direct impact on oil nanoparticle synthesis, influencing parameters such as zeta potential, size, and the polydispersity index; these characteristics might limit the use of oils in different industries. This review summarizes oil nanoencapsulation in the food industry and highlights the technologies, advantages, and limitations of different techniques for obtaining stable oil nanocapsules; it also illustrates key opportunities for and the benefits of technological innovations and analyzes the protection of this technology through patent applications. In the last 20 years, oil nanoencapsulation has grown considerably in the food industry. Although nanoencapsulated oil products are not currently found in the food industry, there are numerous articles in the food science area reporting that oil nanoencapsulation will be a market trend. Nevertheless, different areas can apply nanoencapsulated oils, as demonstrated via patent applications.

Abstract
Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) have already been used as food additive in various products and are usually consumed with a considerable amount of sugar. Oral consumption of TiO2 NPs poses concerning health risks; however, research on the combined effect of ingested TiO2 NPs and glucose is limited. We examined young Sprague-Dawley rats administrated TiO2 NPs orally at doses of 0, 2, 10 and 50 mg/kg body weight per day with and without 1.8 g/kg body weight glucose for 30 and 90 days. Heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, blood biochemical parameters and histopathology of cardiac tissues was assessed to quantify cardiovascular damage. The results showed that oral exposure to TiO2 NPs and high doses of glucose both could induce cardiovascular injuries. The toxic effects were dose-, time- and gender-dependent. The interaction effects between oral-exposed TiO2 NPs and glucose existed and revealed to be antagonism in most of the biological parameters. However, toxic effects of the high-dose glucose seemed to be more severe than TiO2 NPs and the interaction of TiO2 NPs with glucose. These results suggest that it may be more important to control the sugar intake than TiO2 NPs for protecting the health of TiO2 NP consumers.

Abstract
The potential health hazards of silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) have attracted more and more attentions. Researches had shown that SiNPs could damage seminiferous epithelium and reduce the quantity and quality of sperms, however the specific mechanism of male reproductive toxicity induced by SiNPs still unclear. So we designed to investigate the mechanism of SiNPs on male mice using spermatocyte lines (GC-2spd cells) after exposure to SiNPs (6.25, 12.5, 25 and 50 μg/mL) for 24 h. The present study showed that SiNPs entered GC-2 cells and mainly localized in the cytoplasm and lysosome. And internalized SiNPs damaged mitochondria structures. As a result, SiNPs not only induced a dose-dependent reduction in cell viability, but also increased the LDH release and apoptosis rate in GC-2 cells. Furthermore, SiNPs induced DNA strand breaks and abnormal mitosis, and arrested GC-2 cells at the G0/G1 phase. Besides, SiNPs could simultaneously activate both PKC-mediated negative signaling pathway (PKC-δ/p53/p21cip1) and positive signaling pathway (PKC-α/MAPK). However, the lower expressions of cyclin E and cyclin-dependent kinases 2 (CDK2) indicated that PKC-δ signaling pathway played a major role in cell cycle process. These results suggested internalized SiNPs in GC-2 cells induced DNA strand breaks and activated PKC-mediated signaling pathway. While the activation of PKC-δ signaling pathway led to cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, thereby resulting in abnormal mitosis. The present study may provide a new evidence to elucidate the toxic mechanisms of male reproductive system, and will be beneficial for safety assessment of SiNPs products.
