Abstract
Background Many currently proposed diets for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) focus on increasing plant-based foods, although a vegetarian diet can still contain products such as emulsifiers and refined grains that are believed to negatively impact IBD incidence and progression. To better inform dietary management in IBD, we investigated the association between plant-based diets and the incidence and complications of IBD. Methods We leveraged data from the UK Biobank (UKB, 2009-2022) including 187,888 participants free of IBD at baseline and the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC, 1991-2010) cohort including 341,539 individuals free of IBD across centres among Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden and UK. Healthy and unhealthy diets were characterised using plant-based diet indexes (PDIs); in individual participants, these were based on the 24-h dietary recalls for UKB and food frequency questionnaires for EPIC. The primary outcome was the incidence of IBD; secondary outcomes evaluated endpoints of disease prognosis (IBD-related surgery, diabetes, cardiovascular diease, and all-cause mortality). Cox regression was applied to estimate hazard ratios (HRs). Findings In the UKB (925 incident IBD, median follow-up 11.6 years, IQR 1.3 years), higher adherence to healthy PDI was associated with a lower IBD risk (HR 0.75, 95% CI 0.60-0.94), while higher alignment to an unhealthy PDI associated with an increased risk (HR 1.48, 95% CI 1.21-1.82) when comparing extreme quintiles of PDIs. Among individuals with established IBD, healthy PDI was inversely associated (HR 0.50, 95% CI 0.30-0.83) and unhealthy PDI was positively associated (HR 2.12, 95% CI 1.30-3.44) with need for IBD-related surgery. We did not observe significant associations between PDIs and risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus or mortality. In the EPIC study (548 incident IBD, median follow-up 14.5 years, IQR 7.0 years), the HR of incident IBD for healthy PDI was 0.71 (95% CI 0.59-0.85) and for unhealthy PDI was 1.54 (95% CI 1.30-1.84). Interpretation We provide evidence that the composition of a plant-based diet may be an important determinant of the risk of developing IBD, and of disease course after diagnosis. Further research is needed to explore the mechanistic pathways linking plant-based diets and IBD incidence and prognosis. Abstract
Delving into the intricate role of phytonutrients is paramount to effectively preventing and treating chronic diseases. Phytonutrients are "plant-based nutrients" that positively affect human health. Phytonutrients perform primary therapeutic functions in the management and treatment of various diseases. It is reported that different types of pathogenesis occur due to the excessive production of oxidants (reactive nitrogen species and reactive oxygen species). The literature shows that a higher intake of fruits, vegetables, and other plant-based food is inversely related to treating different chronic diseases. Due to many phytonutrients (antioxidants) in fruits, vegetables, and other medicinal plants, they are considered major therapeutic agents for various diseases. The main purpose of this review is to summarize the major phytonutrients involved in preventing and treating diseases. Fourteen major phytonutrients are discussed in this review, such as polyphenols, anthocyanin, resveratrol, phytosterol (stigmasterol), flavonoids, isoflavonoids, limonoids, terpenoids, carotenoids, lycopene, quercetin, phytoestrogens, glucosinolates, and probiotics, which are well-known for their beneficial effects on the human body and treatment of different pathological conditions. It is concluded that phytonutrients play a major role in the prevention and treatment of diabetes mellitus, obesity, hypertension, cardiovascular disorders, other types of cancers, neurological disorders, age-related diseases, and inflammatory disorders and are also involved in various biological activities.

Abstract
Polyphenols are secondary metabolites produced by a large variety of plants. These compounds that comprise the class of phenolic acids, stilbenes, lignans, coumarins, flavonoids, and tannins have a wide range of employment, from food production to medical usages. Among the beneficial applications of polyphenols, their antiviral activity is gaining importance due to the increased prevalence of drug-resistant viruses such as herpes and hepatitis B viruses. In the present review, we provide an overview of the most promising or commonly used antiviral polyphenols and their mechanisms of action focusing on their effects on enveloped viruses of clinical importance (double-stranded linear or partially double-stranded circular DNA viruses, negative sense single-stranded RNA viruses with nonsegmented or segmented genomes, and positive sense single-stranded RNA viruses). The present work emphasizes the relevance of polyphenols, in particular epigallocatechin-3-gallate and resveratrol, as alternative or supportive antivirals. Polyphenols could interfere with virtually all steps of viral infection, from the adsorption to the release of viral particles. The activity of polyphenols against viruses is especially relevant given the risk of widespread outbreaks associated with viruses, remarked by the recent COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic autoimmune disease and seriously affects the normal life of patients. Conventional therapeutic drugs are difficult to meet clinical needs. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) ingredients could effectively alleviate the symptoms of UC by anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, regulating the gut microbiota, and repairing the colonic epithelial barrier, but their low solubility and bioavailability severely limit their clinical application. Nano-drug delivery systems (NDDS) combined with TCM ingredients is a promising option for treating UC, and they could significantly enhance the stability, solubility, and bioavailability of TCM ingredients. The review describes the anti-UC mechanisms of TCM ingredients, systematically summarizes various kinds of NDDS for TCM ingredients according to different routes of administration, and highlights the advantages of NDDS for TCM ingredients in the treatmentof UC. In addition, we discuss the limitations of existing NDDS for TCM ingredients and the development direction in the future. This review will provide a basis for the future development of anti-UC NDDS for TCM ingredients.

Abstract
Conditions like diabetes mellitus (DM), cancer, infections, inflammation, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), and gastrointestinal (GI) disorders continue to have a major global impact on mortality and morbidity. Medicinal plants have been used since ancient times in ethnomedicine (e.g., Ayurveda, Unani, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and European Traditional Medicine) for the treatment of a wide range of disorders. Plants are a rich source of diverse phytoconstituents with antidiabetic, anticancer, antimicrobial, antihypertensive, antioxidant, antihyperlipidemic, cardioprotective, immunomodulatory, and/or anti-inflammatory activities. This review focuses on the 35 plants most commonly reported for the treatment of these major disorders, with a particular emphasis on their traditional uses, phytoconstituent contents, pharmacological properties, and modes of action. Active phytomolecules with therapeutic potential include cucurbitane triterpenoids, diosgenin, and limonoids (azadiradione and gedunin), which exhibit antidiabetic properties, with cucurbitane triterpenoids specifically activating Glucose Transporter Type 4 (GLUT4) translocation. Capsaicin and curcumin demonstrate anticancer activity by deactivating NF-κB and arresting the cell cycle in the G2 phase. Antimicrobial activities have been observed for piperine, reserpine, berberine, dictamnine, chelerythrine, and allitridin, with the latter two triggering bacterial cell lysis. Quercetin, catechin, and genistein exhibit anti-inflammatory properties, with genistein specifically suppressing CD8+ cytotoxic T cell function. Ginsenoside Rg1 and ginsenoside Rg3 demonstrate potential for treating cardiovascular diseases, with ginsenoside Rg1 activating PPARα promoter, and the PI3K/Akt pathway. In contrast, ternatin, tannins, and quercitrin exhibit potential in gastrointestinal disorders, with quercitrin regulating arachidonic acid metabolism by suppressing cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipoxygenase activity. Further studies are warranted to fully investigate the clinical therapeutic benefits of these plants and their phytoconstituents, as well as to elucidate their underlying molecular mechanisms of action.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The clinical efficacies of Ulcerative colitis (UC) are far from satisfactory. Fucoxanthin (FUC) is a marine carotenoid that is abundant in seaweed and microalgae. It has been reported that FUC can possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. However, its mechanism and role in UC is yet to be clarified. This study aimed to investigate the protective effect and potential mechanism of FUC extracted from the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutm on dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) -induced colitis. METHODS Animal UC model was induced by DSS and cellular model was established by TNF-α. Immunohistochemical staining, Western blot, RT-qPCR, and immunofluorescence were used to assess the inflammatory responses and epithelial barrier in vivo and in vitro models. RESULTS The results showed that FUC attenuates DSS-induced colitis by ameliorating the epithelial mucosal barrier. Moreover, FUC possessed antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects on NCM460 cells. JAK/STAT activator RO8191 could reverse these changes. CONCLUSION FUC exerted anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects via the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway, and served as a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of UC.

Abstract
Liubao insect tea (LIT) is a traditional tea produced from the excreta of Hydrillodes repugnalis that are fed with Liubao tea. In this study, LIT polyphenols (LITP) were extracted and identified, mainly consisting of brevifolin carboxylic acid, brevifolin, ellagic acid. The study aimed to explore the therapeutic potential of LITP in experimental colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium in mice. LITP treatment effectively mitigated colitis symptoms, including body weight loss, diarrhoea and haematochezia, etc. Furthermore, LITP treatment significantly increased colon length, attenuated inflammatory cell infiltration and mucosal damage, safeguarded the integrity of the epithelial cell barrier, and reduced proinflammatory cytokines levels. Noteworthy alterations in the abundance of gut microbiota community were also observed, with increases in beneficial bacteria Akkermansia, Clostridia_UCG-014, and decreases in harmful bacteria Turicibacter and Erysipelatoclostridium. In conclusion, LITP exerted alleviative effects on colitis via fortifying intestinal barrier and modulating the intestinal microbiota.

Abstract
The absence of trace amounts of natural bioactive compounds with important biological activities in traditional dietary models for global farm animals, coupled with an incomplete theoretical system for animal nutrition, has led to unbalanced and inadequate animal nutrition. This deficiency has adversely impacted animal health and the ecological environment, presenting formidable challenges to the advancement of the swine breeding industry in various countries around the world toward high-quality development. Recently, due to the ban of antibiotics for growth promotion in swine diets, botanical active compounds have been extensively investigated as feed additives. Polyphenols represent a broad group of plant secondary metabolites. They are natural, non-toxic, pollution-free, and highly reproducible compounds that have a wide range of physiological functions, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antiviral, antibacterial, and metabolic activities. Accordingly, polyphenols have been widely studied and used as feed additives in swine production. This review summarizes the structural characteristics, classification, current application situation, general properties of polyphenols, and the latest research advances on their use in swine production. Additionally, the research and application bottlenecks and future development of plant polyphenols in the animal feed industry are reviewed and prospected. This review aims to stimulate the in-depth study of natural plant polyphenols and the research and development of related products in order to promote the green, healthy, and high-quality development of swine production, while also providing ideas for the innovation and development in the theoretical system of animal nutrition.

Abstract
Natural compound-based treatments provide innovative ways for ulcerative colitis therapy. However, poor targeting and rapid degradation curtail its application, which needs to be addressed. Inspired by biomacromolecule-based materials, we have developed an orally administrated nanoparticle (GBP@HA NPs) using bovine serum albumin as a carrier for polyphenol delivery. The system synergizes galactosylated bovine serum albumin with two polyphenols, epigallocatechin gallate and tannic acid, which is then encased in "nanoarmor" of ε-Polylysine and hyaluronic acid to boost its stability and targeting. Remarkably, the nanoarmor demonstrated profound therapeutic effects in both acute and chronic mouse models of ulcerative colitis, mitigating disease symptoms via multiple mechanisms, regulating inflammation related factors and exerting a modulatory impact on gut microbiota. Further mechanistic investigations indicate that GBP@HA NPs may act through several pathways, including modulation of Keap1-Nrf2 and NF-κB signaling, as well as Caspase-1-dependent pyroptosis. Consequently, this novel armored nanotherapy promotes the way for enhanced polyphenol utilization in ulcerative colitis treatment research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The experiment was conducted to determine the apparent or standardized ileal digestibility (AID or SID) of crude protein (CP) and amino acids (AA) in 10 rapeseed cake samples fed to pigs, and to construct predictive models for the SID of CP and AA based on the chemical composition of rapeseed cakes. METHODS Twenty-two cannulated pigs (initial body weight: 39.8 ± 1.2 kg) were assigned to two 11 × 3 incomplete Latin square designs, including an N-free diet and 10 diets containing rapeseed cake. Each experimental period included 5 days of adaptation and 2 days of ileal digesta collection. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) was added at 0.3% to all the diets as an indigestible marker for calculating the ileal CP and AA digestibility. RESULTS The coefficients of variation (CV) of the content of crude fat (EE), crude fiber (CF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), and total glucosinolates (TGS) in 10 samples of rapeseed cake were greater than 10%. The standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of crude protein (CP), lysine (Lys), methionine (Met), threonine (Thr), and tryptophan (Trp) in rapeseed cake was 73.34% (61.49 to 81.12%), 63.01% (41.41 to 73.10%), 69.47% (50.55 to 88.16%), 79.61% (74.41 to 87.58%), and 94.43% (91.34 to 97.20%), respectively. The best prediction equations for SIDCP, SIDLys, and SIDVal were as follows: SIDCP = 90.124 - 0.54NDF (R2 = 0.58), SIDLys = 100.107 - 1.229NDF (R2 = 0.94), and SIDVal = 151.012 - 2.990TGS (R2 = 0.57). CONCLUSION Overall, great variation exists among the 10 rapeseed cakes, and the NDF, TGS, and heating temperature can be used as the key predictors for the SID of CP and AA.

Abstract
Castanea sativa Mill. (C. sativa) processing and pruning generate several by-products, including leaves, burs, and shells (inner and outer teguments), which are considered an important source of high-value phytochemicals. Ellagitannins from C. sativa leaf extracts have been described to impair H. pylori viability and inflammation in gastric cells. Furthermore, chestnut shells showed an important anti-inflammatory effect in gastric epithelial cells. Dietary polyphenols, including tannins, have been reported to interfere with targets of inflammation, including the nuclear factor κB (NF-κB). A promising role as a further therapeutical target for gut disorders has been recently proposed for the regulatory subunit of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF-1α), as a potential stabilizer of intestinal barrier integrity. Therefore, the main objective of this work is the chemical characterization of several chestnut by-products (bud, spiny bur, wood, pericarp and episperm), together with the exploitation of their anti-inflammatory properties in intestinal cells, scavenging capacity, and stability following gastrointestinal digestion. The chemical characterization confirmed the presence of bioactive polyphenols in the extracts, including ellagitannins. In CaCo-2 cells stimulated by an IL-1β-IFN-γ cocktail, nearly all chestnut by-products (50 µg/mL) inhibited the release of proinflammatory mediators (CXCL-10, IL-8, MCP-1, ICAM), along with the NF-κB-driven transcription, and induced the HRE-driven transcription. The stability of the most promising extracts, identified through PCA and cluster analysis, was addressed by in vitro gastrointestinal digestion. Despite the significant reduction in total polyphenol index of chestnut bud and wood after gastric and intestinal digestion, the activity of these extracts on both scavenging and anti-inflammatory parameters remained promising. These data contribute to exploit the potential of chestnut by-products as sources of dietary polyphenols with anti-inflammatory properties at the intestinal level. Moreover, this study could represent an important step to encourage the recycling and valorization of chestnut by-products, promoting the circular economy and reducing the environmental impact related to the management of agriculture waste.

Abstract
Backgrounds Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a form of chronic inflammatory bowel disease, and UC diagnosis rates continue to rise throughout the globe. The research and development of new drugs for the treatment of UC are urgent, and natural compounds are an important source. However, there is a lack of systematic summarization of natural compounds and their mechanisms for the treatment of UC. Methods We reviewed the literature in the databases below from their inception until July 2023: Web of Science, PubMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang Data, to obtain information on the relationship between natural compounds and UC. Results The results showed that 279 natural compounds treat UC through four main mechanisms, including regulating gut microbiota and metabolites (Mechanism I), protecting the intestinal mucosal barrier (Mechanism II), regulating intestinal mucosal immune response (Mechanism III), as well as regulating other mechanisms (Mechanism Ⅳ) such as cellular autophagy modulation and ferroptosis inhibition. Of these, Mechanism III is regulated by all natural compounds. The 279 natural compounds, including 62 terpenoids, 57 alkaloids, 52 flavonoids, 26 phenols, 19 phenylpropanoids, 9 steroids, 9 saponins, 8 quinonoids, 6 vitamins, and 31 others, can effectively ameliorate UC. Of these, terpenoids, alkaloids, and flavonoids have the greatest potential for treating UC. It is noteworthy to highlight that a total of 54 natural compounds exhibit their therapeutic effects by modulating Mechanisms I, II, and III. Conclusion This review serves as a comprehensive resource for the pharmaceutical industry, researchers, and clinicians seeking novel therapeutic approaches to combat UC. Harnessing the therapeutic potential of these natural compounds may significantly contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of patients with UC and promotion of disease-modifying therapies in the future.

Abstract
A chronic inflammatory condition of the intestine, ulcerative colitis (UC), is challenging to successfully manage once diagnosed. Currently, available medical therapies for UC exhibit minimal efficacy with unacceptable side effects, while inventive biological agents are expensive and yet not well accepted by patients. Discovering more effective and safer treatments to treat UC is therefore essential. One of the primary alkaloids found in Aegle marmelos, aegeline, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties as well as being able to suppress several pro-inflammatory cytokines responsible for inflammation. The study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of aegeline in alleviating 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis through the NFƙB-mediated NLRP3 inflammasome pathway. Mice were randomly allocated into six groups, Normal control (NC), Model control (MC-TNBS, 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid), STD (TNBS + sulfasalazine 100 mg/kg), AG1, AG2, and AG3 (TNBS + aegeline 5, 10, 20 mg/kg) respectively. Physical parameters such as a change in body weight, stool consistency, rectal bleeding, colon length, myeloperoxidase (MPO) levels and nitric oxide (NO) levels, and disease activity index (DAI) were assessed and supporting gene expression studies of various pro-inflammatory cytokines and enzymes were evaluated and histopathological changes observed. Administration of aegeline (10, 20 mg/kg) was found to be effective in colon protection by lowering the disease activity score and myeloperoxidase level and improving other physical parameters. Aegeline in high dose significantly downregulated the gene expression of NFƙB, iNOS, COX-2, NLRP3, IL-1β, and IL-18, conferring great anti-inflammatory potential. Suggestive of the findings, aegeline reduced the damage to the colon by downregulating transcriptional genes and enzymes leading to inflammation and mitigated TNBS-induced colitis probably through the NFƙB-mediated NLRP3 inflammasome pathway.

Abstract
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a recurring autoimmune disorder characterized by persistent inflammation in the mucosal lining of the lower part of the large intestine. Conventional treatment options such as salicylates, corticosteroids, and immunosuppressants often come with severe side effects, limited bioavailability, and the development of drug resistance, which hampers their therapeutic effectiveness. Therefore, it is imperative to explore natural strategies as safe and alternative treatments for UC. Currently, around 40% of UC patients find relief through natural constituents, which can help reduce toxic side effects and maintain clinical remission. This review aims to provide a summary of both preclinical and clinical evidence supporting the efficacy of various natural substances in the prophylaxis of UC. These natural options include plant extracts, essential oils, nutraceuticals, and phytochemicals. Furthermore, we will delve into the potential mechanisms that underlie the protective and curative actions of these novel herbal agents. In summary, this review will explore the effectiveness of natural remedies for UC, shedding light on their preclinical and clinical findings and the mechanisms behind their therapeutic actions. These alternatives offer hope for improved treatment outcomes and reduced side effects for individuals suffering from this challenging autoimmune condition.

Abstract
Non-digestible oligosaccharides have attracted attention due to their critical role in maintaining the balance of a host's gut microbiota. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum ZDY2013 was isolated from traditional fermented acid beans, which could metabolize many complex carbohydrates and had intestinal immunomodulatory effects. In our study, the ameliorative effect of a combination of non-digestible isomaltooligosaccharide (IMO) and L. plantarum ZDY2013 was investigated in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis mice. The results showed that IMO could specifically promote L. plantarum ZDY2013 intestinal colonization after five days of gavage and ameliorate the symptoms of colitis (survival rate, DAI score, colon length, etc.) as well as colon tissue integrity. IMO combined with L. plantarum ZDY2013 increased the levels of intestinal tight junction proteins (ZO-1 and claudin) and mucin (MUC-2), followed by alleviation of inflammatory responses (decreased the expression of IL-1β, TNF-α, and IL-6 and increased the expression of IL-10 and IL-22) and the level of oxidative stress (decreased the level of COX-2 and iNOS and increased the expression of T-AOC and SOD). Furthermore, the combination increased the diversity of the gut microbiota and modulated the microbial structural component (decreased the abundance of Escherichia and Helicobacter and increased the abundance of Lactobacillus and SCFA-producing related species). Taken together, our results suggested that the consumption of IMO and L. plantarum ZDY2013 could improve the symptoms of colitis in mice by improving the intestinal barrier along with regulating the composition and metabolites of the gut microbiota.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an autoimmune disorder caused by uncontrolled immune activation and the subsequent destruction of the colon tissue. Quercetin (Qt) is a natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent proposed as an alternative to mitigate IBD. However, its use is limited by its low oral bioavailability. This study aimed to develop nanoemulsions (NEs) based on a soluble chenopodin/alginate (QPA) complex and Tween 80 (T80), intended for the colonic release of Qt, activated by the pH (5.4) and bacteria present in the human colonic microbiota. NEs with different ratios of QPA/Tw80 (F1-F6) were prepared, where F4Qt (60/40) and F5Qt (70/30) showed sizes smaller than 260 nm, PDI < 0.27, and high encapsulation efficiency (>85%). The stability was evaluated under different conditions (time, temperature, pH, and NaCl). The DSC and FTIR analyses indicated hydrophobic and hydrogen bonding interactions between QPA and Qt. F4Qt and F5Qt showed the greater release of Qt in PBS1X and Krebs buffer at pH 5.4 (diseased condition), compared to the release at pH 7.4 (healthy condition) at 8 h of study. In the presence of E. coli and B. thetaiotaomicron, they triggered the more significant release of Qt (ƒ2 < 50) compared to the control (without bacteria). The NEs (without Qt) did not show cytotoxicity in HT-29 cells (cell viability > 80%) and increased the antioxidant capacity of encapsulated Qt. Therefore, these NEs are promising nanocarriers for the delivery of flavonoids to the colon to treat IBD.

Abstract
Plant-derived nanovesicles (PDNVs) have recently emerged as natural delivery systems of biofunctional compounds toward mammalian cells. Considering their already described composition, anti-inflammatory properties, stability, and low toxicity, PDNVs offer a promising path for developing new preventive strategies for several inflammatory diseases, among which the inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In this study, we explore the protective effects of industrially produced lemon vesicles (iLNVs) in a rat model of IBD. Characterization of iLNVs reveals the presence of small particles less than 200 nm in size and a profile of bioactive compounds enriched in flavonoids and organic acids with known beneficial properties. In vitro studies on human macrophages confirm the safety and anti-inflammatory effects of iLNVs, as evidenced by the reduced expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and increased levels of anti-inflammatory markers. As evidenced by in vivo experiments, pre-treatment with iLNVs significantly alleviates symptoms and histological features in 2,4 dinitrobenzensulfuric acid (DNBS)-induced colitis in rats. Molecular pathway analysis reveals modulation of NF-κB and Nrf2, indicating anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Finally, iLNVs affects gut microbiota composition, improving the consistent colitis-related alterations. Overall, we demonstrated the protective role of industrially produced lemon nanovesicles against colitis and emphasized their potential in managing IBD through multifaceted mechanisms.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory intestinal disorder, and its complex etiology makes prevention and treatment challenging. Research on new drugs and treatment strategies is currently a focal point. Phenolic acids are widely present in plant-based diets and have demonstrated the potential to alleviate colitis due to their powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In this review, we provide an overview of the structures and main dietary sources of phenolic acids, encompassing benzoic acid and cinnamic acid. Additionally, we explore the potential of phenolic acids as a nutritional therapy for preventing and treating IBD. In animal and cell experiments, phenolic acids effectively alleviate IBD induced by drug exposure or genetic defects. The mechanisms include improving intestinal mucosal barrier function, reducing oxidative stress, inhibiting excessive activation of the immune response, and regulating the balance of the intestinal microbiota. Our observation points towards the need for additional basic and clinical investigations on phenolic acids and their derivatives as potential novel therapeutic agents for IBD.

Abstract
Because of their beneficial properties, natural products, especially medicinal plants, are becoming increasingly popular worldwide and play a significant role in research. This study was aimed to evaluate the nephroprotective effect of sinapic acid against mercuric chloride-induced renal toxicity in mice. The mice were allocated to four groups named a normal group (G1), model group (G2; received HgCl2, 1 mg/kg bw), treatments groups (G3 and G4: received 50 and 100 mg/kg bw of sinapic acid together with HgCl2). Mice received HgCl2 remarkably showed alteration in all examined biochemical biomarkers (urea, creatinine, and bilirubin), and induced alteration in blood cell picture and anemia. HgCl2 intoxication decreased both systemic and renal antioxidant activity and induced over all oxidative stress as indicated by alteration in inflammation and oxidative stress associated markers. HgCl2 affected renal histology with leukocytic and inflammatory cell infiltration, fibrosis and tubular necrosis. Administration of sinapic acid (50 and 100 mg/kg bw) markedly restored the HgCl2-induced oxidative stress (serum and renal: MDA, GSH, CAT, SOD, and T-AOC), proinflammatory cytokines (serum and renal: TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, and PGE2) and restored the changes on biochemical markers, and hematological parameters (hemoglobin, erythrocytes, platelets, and leukocytes). Taken together, the results of the present study disclose that sinapic acid has the potential to attenuate HgCl2-induced renal toxicity and may be an ideal choice against mercury poisoning.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains a burden for patients with increasing prevalence in industrialized countries. Phytochemicals are non-nutrient plant derived bioactive substances with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that may prove beneficial to IBD patients. This review aims to overview current evidence on the application and impact of isolated phytochemicals or phytochemicals contained in plant extracts and essential oils on patients suffering from IBD. A systematic literature search was conducted for studies relating to the use of phytochemicals for the treatment of IBD. Ultimately, 37 human clinical trials and 3 systematic reviews providing human IBD patient data relevant to phytochemicals as therapeutic agents were included. Phytochemicals in the form of curcumin, Plantago ovata seeds, polyphenon E, silymarin, resveratrol supplements or an herbal preparation of myrrh, chamomile and coffee charcoal have evidence from human clinical trials supporting their safety and beneficial effects. Cannabinoids improve quality of life but not IBD outcomes. The addition of probiotics like B. longum to fructo-oligosaccharides promote healthy composition of the gut microbiome. Phytochemicals like mastiha, anthocyanins, berberine, tormentil, T2, ecabet sodium and Pycnogenol need more well-designed trials. Systematic research on phytochemicals can lead to the discovery of useful therapeutics. These secondary metabolites can be incorporated in current IBD treatment strategies to limit side effects, promote mucosal healing and provide higher quality of life to patients.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the preventive role and underlying mechanisms of fucoxanthin (Fx) on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in mice. The present data demonstrated that oral administration of Fx (50 and 200 mg/kg body weight/day) for 36 days significantly alleviated the severity of colitis in DSS-treated mice, as evidenced by attenuating body weight loss, bloody stool, diarrhea, shortened colon length, colonic epithelium distortion, a thin mucus layer, goblet cell depletion, damaged crypts, and extensive infiltration of inflammatory cells in the colonic mucosa. Additionally, Fx notably relieved DSS-induced intestinal epithelial barrier dysfunction via maintaining the tight junction function and preventing excessive apoptosis of colonic epithelial cells. Moreover, Fx effectively diminished colonic inflammation and oxidative stress in DSS-treated mice, and its mechanisms might be due to blunting the activation of NF-κB and NLRP3 inflammasome signaling pathways. Furthermore, Fx also modulates DSS-induced gut microbiota dysbiosis via recovering the richness and diversity of gut microbiota and reshaping the structure of gut microbiota, such as increasing the Firmicutes and Bacteroidota (F/B) ratio and elevating the relative abundance of some potential beneficial bacteria, including Lactobacillaceae and Lachnospiraceae. Overall, Fx might be developed as a promising functional ingredient to prevent colitis and maintain intestinal homeostasis.

Abstract
Inflammation is the immune system's first biological response to infection, injury, or irritation. Evidence suggests that the anti-inflammatory effect is mediated by the regulation of various inflammatory cytokines, such as nitric oxide, interleukins, tumor necrosis factor alpha-α, interferon gamma-γ, as well as the non-cytokine mediator, prostaglandin E2. Currently, the mechanism of action and clinical usefulness of phytochemicals is known; their action on the activity of cytokines, free radicals, and oxidative stress. The latter are of great relevance in the development of diseases, such that the evidence collected demonstrates the beneficial effects of phytochemicals in maintaining health. Epidemiological evidence indicates that regular consumption of fruits and vegetables is related to a low risk of developing cancer and other chronic diseases.

Abstract
Obesity is a major risk factor for morbidity and mortality because it has a close relationship to metabolic illnesses, such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and some types of cancer. With no drugs available, the mainstay of obesity management remains lifestyle changes with exercise and dietary modifications. In light of the tremendous disease burden and unmet therapeutics, fresh perspectives on pathophysiology and drug discovery are needed. The development of epigenetics provides a compelling justification for how environmental, lifestyle, and other risk factors contribute to the pathogenesis of obesity. Furthermore, epigenetic dysregulations can be restored, and it has been reported that certain natural products obtained from plants, such as tea polyphenols, ellagic acid, urolithins, curcumin, genistein, isothiocyanates, and citrus isoflavonoids, were shown to inhibit weight gain. These substances have great antioxidant potential and are of great interest because they can also modify epigenetic mechanisms. Therefore, understanding epigenetic modifications to target the primary cause of obesity and the epigenetic mechanisms of anti-obesity effects with certain phytochemicals can prove rational strategies to prevent the disease and develop novel therapeutic interventions. Thus, the current review aimed to summarize the epigenetic mechanisms and advances in therapies for obesity based on natural products to provide evidence for the development of several potential anti-obesity drug targets.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic and idiopathic condition that results in inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, leading to conditions such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Commonly used treatments for IBD include anti-inflammatory drugs, immunosuppressants, and antibiotics. Fecal microbiota transplantation is also being explored as a potential treatment method; however, these drugs may lead to systemic side effects. Oral administration is preferred for IBD treatment, but accurately locating the inflamed area in the colon is challenging due to multiple physiological barriers. Nanoparticle drug delivery systems possess unique physicochemical properties that enable precise delivery to the target site for IBD treatment, exploiting the increased permeability and retention effect of inflamed intestines. The first part of this review comprehensively introduces the pathophysiological environment of IBD, covering the gastrointestinal pH, various enzymes in the pathway, transport time, intestinal mucus, intestinal epithelium, intestinal immune cells, and intestinal microbiota. The second part focuses on the latest advances in the mechanism and strategies of targeted delivery using oral nanoparticle drug delivery systems for colitis-related fields. Finally, we present challenges and potential directions for future IBD treatment with the assistance of nanotechnology.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic gastrointestinal inflammation with unpredictable symptom fluctuations. While there is no effective cure for IBD, various treatments aim to manage symptoms and improve the quality of life for affected individuals. In recent years, there has been growing interest in the potential benefits of certain natural plants and herbs in the management of IBD. In this regard, this study aimed to evaluate the immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects of a well-characterized extract of Salvia verbenaca (S. verbenaca) in an experimental model of colitis in rats. Interestingly, the daily administration of S. verbenaca (10 and 25 mg/kg) effectively alleviated colitis symptoms, as evidenced by reduced weight/length ratio and colonic damage. Moreover, it reduced oxidative stress markers (MPO and GSH), decreased pro-inflammatory cytokine expression (Il-6, Il-12a, Il-1β, Il-23, Icam-1, Mcp-1, Cinc-1), and preserved the integrity of the intestinal barrier (Villin, Muc-2, Muc-3). These effects suggest S. verbenaca extract could represent a potential complementary candidate to treat gastrointestinal disorders. Its beneficial actions can be related to its antioxidant properties as well as the downregulation of the immune response, which can result in the improvement in the intestine epithelial barrier.

Abstract
Biofilm formation and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) are implicated in the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal (GI) diseases caused by Gram-negative bacteria. Grape seeds, wine industry by-products, have antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. In the present study, the protective effect of procyanidin-rich grape seed extract (prGSE), from unfermented pomace of Vitis vinifera L. cv Bellone, on bacterial LPS-induced oxidative stress and epithelial barrier integrity damage has been studied in a model of Caco-2 cells. The prGSE was characterized at the molecular level using HPLC and NMR. The in vitro activity of prGSE against formation of biofilm of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium and Escherichia coli was investigated. In vivo, prGSE activity using infected Galleria mellonella larvae has been evaluated. The results show that the prGSE, if administered with LPS, can significantly reduce the LPS-induced permeability alteration. Moreover, the ability of the extract to prevent Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) production induced by the LPS treatment of Caco-2 cells was demonstrated. prGSE inhibited the biofilm formation of E. coli and S. Typhimurium. In terms of in vivo activity, an increase in survival of infected G. mellonella larvae after treatment with prGSE was demonstrated. In conclusion, grape seed extracts could be used to reduce GI damage caused by bacterial endotoxin and biofilms of Gram-negative bacteria.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psoriasis is an immune-mediated chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by well-defined erythema and white scales, which affects approximately 2% of the worldwide population and causes long-term distress to patients. Therefore, development of safe and effective therapeutic drugs is imminent. Autophagy, an evolutionarily conserved catabolic process, degrades intracellular constituents to maintain cellular energy homeostasis. Numerous studies have revealed that autophagy is closely related to immune function, such as removal of intracellular bacteria, inflammatory cytokine secretion, antigen presentation, and lymphocyte development. Phytochemicals derived from natural plants are often used to treat psoriasis due to their unique therapeutic properties and favorable safety. So far, a mass of phytochemicals have been proven to be able to activate autophagy and thus alleviate psoriasis. This review aimed to provide directions for finding phytochemicals that target autophagy to treat psoriasis. METHODS The relevant literatures were collected from classical TCM books and a variety of databases (PubMed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, Springer Link, Web of Science and China National Knowledge Infrastructure) till December 2022. Search terms were "Phytochemical", "Psoriasis" and "Autophagy". The retrieved data followed PRISMA criteria (preferred reporting items for systematic review). RESULTS Phytochemicals treat psoriasis mainly through regulating immune cell function, inhibiting excessive inflammatory response, and reducing oxidative stress. While the role and mechanism of autophagy in the pathogenesis of psoriasis have been confirmed in human trials, most of the evidence for phytochemicals that target autophagy to treat psoriasis comes from animal studies. The research focusing on the role of phytochemical-mediated autophagy in the prevention and treatment of psoriasis is limited, and the definite relationship between phytochemical-regulated autophagy and treatment of psoriasis still deserves further experimental confirmation. CONCLUSIONS Phytochemicals with autophagic activities will provide new insights into the therapeutic intervention for psoriasis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIM There is limited data regarding the association between phytochemical-rich diets and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The current study aimed to cross-sectionally evaluate the association of dietary phytochemical index (DPI) with the odds and severity of IBS. METHODS In this study, which included 3362 Iranian healthcare staffs, a dish-based semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (DS-FFQ) was utilized to collect dietary information. The DPI was defined as the daily percentage of calories consumed from phytochemical-rich foods. The IBS assessment was performed using a revised Iranian version of the Rome III questionnaire. We applied the restricted cubic spline (RCS) to detect the possible non-linear dependency of the relationship between DPI and the odds of IBS. RESULTS The mean age, Body Mass Index (BMI), and DPI scores of the participants were 36.29 ± 7.8 years, 24.90 ± 3.8 kg/m2, and 16.07 ± 9.01, respectively. After adjusting for possible confounders, no significant association was observed between DPI and odds of IBS in the whole study population or in gender- and BMI-stratified analyses. We found a significant inverse association between DPI and IBS severity in the study population (OR: 0.70; 95% CI: 0.51-0.98). Concerning gender, such an association was only found in women (OR: 0.65; 95% CI: 0.44-0.96). However, there was no significant relationship between DPI and IBS severity in BMI subgroups. In addition, we found no meaningful relationship between DPI and IBS subtypes. The RCS model showed that there is no non-linear relationship between DPI classification and IBS (non-linear test, χ2 = 1.14, Pnon-linearity = 0.513). CONCLUSIONS Higher phytochemical intake was associated with reduced IBS severity, particularly in women. Further prospective studies are required to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Rosa sterilis S. D. Shi is a new variety of R. roxburghii Tratt and its fruits are rich in bioactive components, but its effects and mechanisms against intestinal inflammation are currently unknown. In this study, the main components of the ethanol extract of R. sterilis S. D. Shi fruits (RSE) were identified and its anti-inflammatory efficacy in DSS-induced mice was evaluated. A total of nine compounds were identified, including 1-O-E-cinnamoyl-(6-arabinosylglucose), ellagic acid-O-rhamnoside, (epi) catechin, niga-ichigoside F1, etc. The results demonstrated that RSE ameliorated DSS-induced inflammation in mouse colon tissues by increasing mucin expression, reducing the production of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, inhibiting the mRNA expression of COX-2 and iNOS, regulating the composition of gut microbiota through suppressing Escherichia-Shigella while increasing Akkermansia muciniphila, and promoting the production of SCFAs, especially acetic acid. Briefly, RSE showed outstanding potential for anti-inflammatory activity and is expected to be a promising dietary supplement for healthy individuals to prevent or relieve colitis and colitis-related diseases, which provided a new direction for functional food development.

Abstract
Introduction: Although sinapic acid is found in various edible plants and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties including colitis, its underlying mechanism and effects on the composition of the gut microbiota are largely unknown. We aimed to identify an early response kinase that regulates the localization of tight junction proteins, act at the onset of the inflammatory response, and is regulated by sinapic acid. Additionally, we analyzed the effects of sinapic acid on the homeostasis of the intestinal microbiome. Methods: We examined the aberrant alterations of early response genes such as nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) and activating transcription factor (ATF)-2 within 2 h of sinapic acid treatment in fully differentiated Caco-2 cells with or without lipopolysaccharide and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α stimulation. To confirm the effect of sinapic acid on stimulus-induced delocalization of tight junction proteins, including zonula occludens (ZO)-1, occludin, and claudin-2, all tight junction proteins were investigated by analyzing a fraction of membrane and cytosol proteins extracted from Caco-2 cells and mice intestines. Colitis was induced in C57BL/6 mice using 2% dextran sulfate sodium and sinapic acid (2 or 10 mg/kg/day) was administrated for 15 days. Furthermore, the nutraceutical and pharmaceutical activities of sinapic acid for treating inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) evaluated. Results: We confirmed that sinapic acid significantly suppressed the stimulus-induced delocalization of tight junction proteins from the intestinal cell membrane and abnormal intestinal permeability as well as the expression of inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-1β and TNF-α in vitro and in vivo. Sinapic acid was found to bind directly to transforming growth factor beta-activated kinase 1 (TAK1) and inhibit the stimulus-induced activation of NF-κB as well as MAPK/ATF-2 pathways, which in turn regulated the expression of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MLCK). Dietary sinapic acid also alleviated the imbalanced of gut microbiota and symptoms of IBD, evidenced by improvements in the length and morphology of the intestine in mice with colitis. Discussion: These findings indicate that sinapic acid may be an effective nutraceutical and pharmaceutical agent for IBD treatment as it targets TAK1 and inhibits subsequent NF-κB and ATF-2 signaling.

Abstract
The anti-inflammatory effect of ellagic acid (EA) and its possible underlying mechanism in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced mouse chronic colonic inflammation were studied. It was observed that EA administration significantly alleviated the colonic inflammation phenotypes, including decreasing the disease activity index (DAI), enhancing the body weight loss, and improving the shortened length of the colon and pathological damage of colon tissue. Additionally, EA reshaped the constitution of the gut microbiota by elevating the ratio of Bacteroidetes along with Bacteroides and Muribaculaceae, while decreasing the proportion of Firmicutes. The Phylogenetic Investigation of Communities by Reconstruction of Unobserved States 2 (PICRUSt2) revealed that the metabolic function of the gut microbiota was also changed. Furthermore, mouse colon transcriptome analysis showed that the tight junction and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) signaling pathways were activated and the expressions of related genes were upregulated after EA intervention. These results showed that EA could remodel the gut bacterial composition, change the intestinal epithelial cell gene expressions in mice, and consequently improve the colonic inflammatory symptoms.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), are a major healthcare challenge worldwide. Disturbances in the immune system and gut microbiota followed by environmental triggers are thought to be part of the aetiological factors. Current treatment for IBD includes corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, and other biologic agents; however, some patients are still unresponsive, and these are also linked to high financial load and severe side effects. Plant-derived natural products are rich in phytochemicals and have been used as healing agents in several diseases since antiquity due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties, as well as gut microbiota modulation. Numerous in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that phytochemicals act in key pathways that are associated with the pathogenesis of IBD. It is also reported that the use of plant-derived natural products as complementary treatments is increasing amongst patients with IBD to avoid the side effects accompanying standard medical treatment. This review summarises the relevant evidence around the use of plant-derived natural products in the management of IBD, with specific focus on the clinical evidence so far for Curcumin, Mastiha, Boswellia serrata, and Artemisia absinthium.

Abstract
Banxia Xiexin decoction (BXD), a traditional Chinese medicine, was widely used in treating ulcerative colitis (UC). However, the active components of BXD and its mechanism in UC remain elusive. Therefore, we used network pharmacology in vivo experiments, molecular docking, and surface plasmon resonance strategy (SPR) to uncover BXD's potential mechanism. A UC rat model was established by orally administering 7% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) in drinking water, BXD and palmatine were orally administered for 7 days. Network pharmacology was used to investigate the main bioactive components and crucial targets of BXD in treating UC. Molecular docking was used to investigate interactions between components and crucial targets, verifying the results by SPR. By network pharmacology predicting, 20 active components and 44 candidate anti-UC targets of BXD were identified, and the crucial proteins were screeded from PPI network, including extracellular regulated protein kinases (ERK), AKT1, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF). In addition, some key active components (palmatine, sexangularetin, and skullcapflavone II) were screened out from the active components-targets network. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment and in vivo experiments showed that protein-serine-threonine kinase (Akt)/MAPK pathway was involved in BXD treatment for UC; BXD and palmatine significantly ameliorated the severity of DSS-induced UC in rats. Our study might assist in further investigation of the active components in Chinese medicine.

Abstract
Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is a major bioactive compound in tea polyphenol extract. After ingestion, EGCG reaches the intestine and may commence anti-inflammation in the intestinal organ. Thus, in this paper, the anti-inflammatory effect of EGCG was studied using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation in RAW 264.7 cells. LPS induction instigated morphological deformation extensively which was normalized by EGCG. In LPS-induced macrophage cells, EGCG was found to lower cellular nitric oxide (32% of LPS group) and intercellular ROS level (45.4% of LPS group). It also suppressed the expression of IL-1β (LPS 132.6 ± 14.6, EGCG 10.67 ± 3.65), IL-6 (LPS 2994.44 ± 178.5, EGCG 408.33 ± 52.34), TNF-α (LPS 27.11 ± 2.84, EGCG 1.22 ± 0.03), and iNOS (LPS 40.45 ± 11.17, EGCG 10.24 ± 0.89). The GO function analysis identified that these differential genes involved 24 biological processes, 18 molecular functions, and 19 cellular component-related processes. KEGG pathway enrichment analysis revealed that LPS significantly affects NF-κB, TNF, and TLR signaling pathways. Western blotting revealed that EGCG diminished P-IκB/IκB ratio by 75% and p-p65/p65 by 50% compared to the LPS group. Finally, Arg-1 and CD-206 mRNA expression were determined by RT-PCR, which was consistent with the RNA-Seq result. These findings indicate that EGCG exerts an anti-inflammatory effect by reducing NO and ROS production, suppressing TLR4 protein expression, and inhibiting IκB and p65 phosphorylation.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE The dried fruit of Gardenia jasminoides Ellis (Zhizi in Chinese) is a traditional medicine used for thousands of years in China, Japan and Korea. Zhizi was recorded in Shennong Herbal, as a folk medicine, it reduces fever and treats gastrointestinal disturbance with antiphlogistic effects. Geniposide, an iridoid glycoside, is an important bioactive compound derived from Zhizi and possesses remarkable antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacities. The pharmacological efficacy of Zhizi is highly related to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of geniposide. AIM OF THE STUDY Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a common chronic gastrointestinal disease as a global public health threat. Redox imbalance is an essential factor in the progression and recurrence of UC. This study aimed to explore the therapeutic effect of geniposide on colitis and uncover the underlying mechanisms of geniposide-mediated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN The study design involved investigating the novel mechanism by which geniposide ameliorates dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in vivo and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-challenged colonic epithelial cells in vitro. MATERIALS AND METHODS The protective effect of geniposide against colitis was evaluated by histopathologic observation and biochemical analysis of colonic tissues in DSS-induced colitis mice. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of geniposide were evaluated in both DSS-induced colitis mice and LPS-challenged colonic epithelial cells. Immunoprecipitation, drug affinity responsive target stability (DARTS), and molecular docking were performed to identify the potential therapeutic target of geniposide and the potential binding sites and patterns. RESULTS Geniposide ameliorated the symptoms of DSS-induced colitis and colonic barrier injury, inhibited pro-inflammatory cytokine expression, and suppressed activation of the NF-κB signaling in colonic tissues of DSS-challenged mice. Geniposide also ameliorated lipid peroxidation and restored redox homeostasis in DSS-treated colonic tissues. In addition, in vitro experiments also showed that geniposide exhibited significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity, as evidenced by suppressed IκB-α and p65 phosphorylation and IκB-α degradation, and enhanced the phosphorylation and transcriptional activity of Nrf2 in LPS-treated Caco2 cells. ML385, a specific Nrf2 inhibitor, abolished the protective effect of geniposide against LPS-induced inflammation. Mechanistically, geniposide could bind to KEAP1, thereby disrupting the interaction between KEAP1 and Nrf2, preventing Nrf2 from degradation and activating the Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway, ultimately suppressing the onset of inflammation caused by redox imbalance. CONCLUSIONS Geniposide ameliorates colitis by activation of Nrf2/ARE signaling, while preventing colonic redox imbalance and inflammatory damage, indicating that geniposide can be considered as a promising lead compound for the treatment of colitis.

Abstract
The anti-inflammation effect of aqueous Phyllanthus emblica L. extract (APE) and its possible underlying mechanism in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced mice chronic colonic inflammation were studied. APE treatment significantly improved the colitic symptoms, including ameliorating the shortening of the colon, increasing the DSS-induced body weight loss, reducing the disease activity index, and reversing the condition of colon tissue damage of mucus lost and goblet cell reduction. Overproduction of serum pro-inflammatory cytokines were suppressed by the treatment of APE. Gut microbiome analysis showed that APE remodeled the structure of gut bacteria in phylum and genus levels, upregulating the abundance of phylum Bacteroidetes, family Muribaculaceae, and genus Bacteroides and downregulating the abundance of phylum Firmicutes. The reshaped gut microbiome caused metabolic functions and pathway change with enhanced queuosine biosynthesis and reduced polyamine synthesis pathway. Colon tissue transcriptome analysis further elucidated APE-inhibited mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) signaling pathways and the expressions of the genes that promote the progress of colorectal cancer. It turned out that APE reshaped the gut microbiome and inhibited MAPK, cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, and TNF signaling pathways as well as the colorectal-cancer-related genes to exert its colitis protective effect.

Abstract
Ovalbumin (OVA), the most abundant protein in egg whites, has been widely used in various industries. Currently, the structure of OVA has been clearly established, and the extraction of high-purified OVA has become feasible. However, the allergenicity of OVA is still a serious problem because it can cause severe allergic reactions and may even be life-threatening. The structure and allergenicity of the OVA can be altered by many processing methods. In this article, a detailed description on the structure and a comprehensive overview on the extraction protocols and the allergenicity of OVA was documented. Additionally, the information on assembly and potential applications of OVA was summarized and discussed in detail. Physical treatment, chemical modification, and microbial processing can be applied to alter the IgE-binding capacity of OVA by changing its structure and linear/sequential epitopes. Furthermore, research indicated that OVA could assemble with itself or other biomolecules into various forms (particles, fibers, gels, and nanosheets), which expanded its application in the food field. OVA also shows excellent application prospects, including food preservation, functional food ingredients and nutrient delivery. Therefore, OVA demonstrates significant investigation value as a food grade ingredient.

Abstract
Dysfunction of gut barrier is known as "leaky gut" or increased intestinal permeability. Numerous recent scientific evidences showed the association between gut dysfunction and multiple gastrointestinal tract (GI) and non-GI diseases. Research also demonstrated that food plays a crucial role to cause or remedy gut dysfunction related to diseases. We reviewed recent articles from electronic databases, mainly PubMed. The data were based on animal models, cell models, and human research in vivo and in vitro models. In this comprehensive review, our aim focused on the relationship between dietary factors, intestinal permeability dysfunction, and related diseases. This review synthesizes currently available literature and is discussed in three parts: (a) the mechanism of gut barrier and function, (b) food and dietary supplements that may promote gut health, and food or medication that may alter gut function, and (c) a table that organizes the synthesized information by general mechanisms for diseases related to leaky gut/intestinal permeability and associated dietary influences. With future research, dietary intervention could be a new target for individualized disease prevention and management.

Abstract
Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is a disease that negatively affects quality of life and is associated with sustained oxidative stress, inflammation and intestinal permeability. Vitamin D and Curcumin; It has pharmacological properties beneficial to health, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Our study investigates the role of Vitamin D and Curcumin in acetic acid-induced acute colitis model. To investigate the effect of Vitamin D and Curcumin, Wistar-albino rats were given 0.4 mcg/kg Vitamin D (Post-Vit D, Pre-Vit D) and 200 mg/kg Curcumin (Post-Cur, Pre-Cur) for 7 days and acetic acid was injected into all rats except the control group. Our results; colon tissue TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IFN-γ and MPO levels were found significantly higher and Occludin levels were found significantly lower in the colitis group compared to the control group (p < 0.05). TNF-α and IFN-γ levels decreased and Occludin levels increased in colon tissue of Post-Vit D group compared to colitis group (p < 0.05). IL-1β, IL-6 and IFN-γ levels were decreased in colon tissue of Post-Cur and Pre-Cur groups (p < 0.05). MPO levels in colon tissue decreased in all treatment groups (p < 0.05). Vitamin D and Curcumin treatment significantly reduced inflammation and restored the normal histoarchitecture of the colon. From the present study findings, we can conclude that Vitamin D and Curcumin protect the colon from acetic acid toxicity with their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential.

Abstract
This study introduces the bioformulations of Ag/BBR and ZnO/BBR complexes against pathogenic bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. Without the use of toxic reduction agents, Ag and ZnO NPs were prepared using an electrochemical method and then facially mixed with BBR solution to form Ag/BBR and ZnO/BBR complexes. BBR molecules are strongly conjugated with Ag and ZnO NPs through coordinated bonding and electrostatic interaction. As a result, the presence of BBR significantly influenced the nanoparticle growth, resulting in the formation of core/shell structured Ag/BBR and ZnO/BBR NPs with small particle sizes. The antibacterial test showed that BBR, Ag, or ZnO components all contributed to the increase of antibacterial ability of Ag/BBR and ZnO/BBR NPs against both methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Salmonella enteritidis (S. enteritidis). The bactericidal ability of Ag/BBR and ZnO/BBR complexes against MRSA was exhibited even at a concentration of four-fold dilution (corresponding to 1.25 g L-1 of BBR and 46.25 mg L-1 of Ag) and two-fold dilution (corresponding to 2.5 g L-1 of BBR and 10 mg L-1 of ZnO), respectively, while that of the Ag/BBR complex against S. enteritidis showed at a concentration of two-fold dilution corresponding to 2.5 g L-1 of BBR and 92.5 mg L-1 of Ag. The results obtained in this study support that Ag/BBR and ZnO/BBR complexes can be potential therapeutic agents against gastrointestinal infections.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Soluble dietary fiber (SDF) obtained from Lentinula edodes byproducts has beneficial effects on human intestinal health. This study aimed to examine the combined preventive and ameliorative effects of a kind of synbiotic (SDF with a molecular weight of 1.58 × 102 kDa and Lactobacillus plantarum LP90 (LP) at 1 × 109 CFU kg-1 ) on dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis mice. RESULTS The results demonstrated that synbiotic treatment could alleviate weight loss, decrease the disease activity index level and cause histological amelioration. Synbiotic treatment also promoted the production of goblet cells, increased the expression of tight junction proteins, and adjusted the production of myeloperoxidase, malondialdehyde and superoxide dismutase to repair intestinal epithelial injury. Clinical symptoms were alleviated by maintaining Th17/Treg balance, increasing interleukin 10 and immunoglobulin A levels, reducing interleukin 17a and tumor necrosis factor α production, and promoting mRNA to highly express of Foxp3 and vitamin D receptors. Moreover, synbiotic treatment could upregulate butyric acid production (4.71 ± 0.46 mol g-1 feces, P < 0.05) and diversity of intestinal microbial to maintain intestinal homeostasis. CONCLUSION This study suggested that the combination of LP and SDF as a synbiotic has the potential for use as a nutritional supplement to alleviate colitis. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is associated with brain neurotransmitter disorders and intestinal dysbiosis. Bacillus amyloliquefaciens fmb50 produces the lipopeptide surfactin, which has a wide range of biological activities. However, the effects of surfactin on DSS-induced colitis have not been reported. In the present study, oral surfactin significantly ameliorated colitis in a mouse model and reduced depression-like behavior, such as slowed walking speed, shortened movement distance in the open field test, and weakened exploration ability in the light-dark shuttle test. Surfactin noticeably improved gut microbial dysbiosis, intestinal barrier dysfunction in the colon, and blood-brain barrier dysfunction in the brain. Furthermore, the colon levels of occludin were upregulated by 68.51%, and the brain levels of occludin and ZO-1 were upregulated by 77.81% and 36.42%, respectively. Surfactin supplementation also inhibited inflammatory responses by inactivating the tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB), and NLRP3 signaling pathways in the colon and brain. Thus, we believe that surfactin improved the behavioral disorders by upregulating the levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), norepinephrine (NE), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), suppressing the inflammatory responses, and improving the blood-brain barrier dysfunction. Surfactin also reduced the abundances of gut microbes that are related to colitis, especially targeting facultative anaerobes of the phylum Proteobacteria, and it increased the abundance of beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus and unidentified Prevotella. Combined with its nontoxic nature observed in this long-term study in mice, oral surfactin might be a promising intervention strategy for preventing colitis by acting on the microbiota-gut-brain axis.

Abstract
Oenanthe javanica, commonly known as water dropwort, has long been used to treat acute and chronic hepatitis, abdominal pain, alcohol hangovers, and inflammation in various traditional medicine systems in Asia. However, whether O. javanica has beneficial effects on colitis-induced intestinal damage remains elusive. This study tested the hypothesis that O. javanica has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities in mice with dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis. First, treatment of O. javanica ethanol extract (OJE) inhibited the production of inflammatory cytokines in lipopolysaccharide-affected macrophages. Second, in mice with DSS-induced colitis, OJE administration reduced pathological damage to the colon while alleviating weight gain and decreasing colon length, including inflammation and mucosal necrosis. In addition, OJE significantly (p < 0.01) restricted the activation of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) and the secretion of pro-inflammatory mediators and increased the expression of Nrf2-phase 2 antioxidant enzymes. The results of 16S rRNA gene sequencing workflows for taxonomic assignment analysis confirmed that the diversity (richness and evenness) of fecal microbiota was markedly elevated in the OJE group. OJE administration reduced the abundance of Proteobacteria including Escherichia and increased the abundance of the genus Muribaculum. These results suggested that OJE exerts beneficial effects on inflammation and gut microbial composition in a mouse model of colitis.

Abstract
Age-dependent increased risk of inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis is being increasingly realized, and yet therapies targeting this disorder within the purview of aging are limited. The present study attempted to assess the efficacy of green tea epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) consumption in preventing the severity and progression of dextran sulphate sodium (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis in 18 months old middle-aged male mice. Acute colitis was induced in animals using DSS and protective effects of EGCG consumption were examined. Different parameters related to disease progression and molecular markers related to oxi-inflammatory stress, localized and systemic cytokine response, epithelial barrier integrity, and cell cycle progression profile were evaluated. DSS treatment induced rapid and severe symptoms of colitis such as consistently increased DAI score, shortened and inflamed colon accompanied by increased levels of inflammatory proteins (TNFα/IL-6/IL-1β) in both the colon tissue and cultured splenocytes indicating exaggerated Th1 immune response. Markers of oxidative stress increased while antioxidant defences and the expression of tight junction genes in the colonic cells were attenuated. Dysregulation in the expression of cell cycle inhibitory genes (p53/p21WAF1/p16Ink4a) indicated possible induction of colitis-induced dysplasia. On the other hand, EGCG consumption strongly attenuated all the measured ostensible as well as molecular markers of the disease progression as evidenced by improved DAI score, cellular antioxidant capacity, attenuated Th1 cytokine response both in the colon and cultured splenocytes, enhanced expression of tight junction genes, and cell cycle inhibitors thereby suggesting systemic effects of EGCG. Together, these observations suggest that drinking EGCG-rich green tea can be a significant way of managing the severity of colitis during aging.

Abstract
Inflammation is a defensive response of the organism to traumatic, infectious, toxic, ischemic, and autoimmune injury. Inflammatory mediators are released to effectively eliminate the inflammatory trigger and restore homeostasis. However, failure of these processes can lead to chronic inflammatory conditions and diseases such as inflammatory bowel diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory lung diseases, atherosclerosis, and neurodegenerative diseases. The cure of chronic inflammatory diseases remains challenging as current therapies have various limitations, such as pronounced side effects, progressive loss of efficacy, and high cost especially for biologics. In this context, phytochemicals (such as alkaloids, flavonoids, lignans, phenolic acids, saponins, terpenoids, and other classes) are considered as an interesting alternative approach. Among the numerous targets of phytochemicals, AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) can be considered as an interesting target in the context of inflammation. AMPK regulates inflammatory response by inhibiting inflammatory pathways (NF-κB, JAK/STAT, and MAPK) and regulating several other processes of the inflammatory response (oxidative stress, autophagy, and apoptosis). In this review, we summarize and discuss the studies focusing on phytochemicals that showed beneficial effects by blocking different inflammatory pathways implicating AMPK activation in chronic inflammatory disease models. We also highlight elements to consider when investigating AMPK in the context of phytochemicals.

Abstract
Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a gastrointestinal disorder that affects the large intestine, which encompasses several symptoms including, but not limited to, abdominal pain, bloating and dysmotility. In particular, IBS associated with constipation (IBS-C) is characterized by hard and dry stools and inadequate evacuation and difficulty in defecation. Although several drugs ameliorate intestinal modifications and constipation-associated features, management of IBS is still a challenge. Natural compounds including Xyloglucan and pea protein (XP) and Chia seed powder (CS) are widely known to possess beneficial effects in counteracting several gastrointestinal disorders. Here, we aimed to assess the combined effects of XP and CS to treat constipation-related alterations in an IBS-C rat model. IBS-C was induced by gastric instillation of 2 mL of cold water (0-4 °C) for 14 days and Xiloglucan, Pea protein and Chia seeds (XP + CS) treatment was orally administered for 7 days. On day 22, colon tissues were collected for histological analysis. Our results showed that XP + CS administration attenuated constipation-related parameters by increasing body weight and food and water intake. Upon XP + CS treatment, from day 14 to 22, stool moisture content was restored to physiological level. Colonic tissues from IBS-C rats depicted a disruption of the organ architecture accompanied by edema. Loss of colonic structure was reflected by the marked reduction of tight junction protein expression, Occludin and zona occludens-1 (ZO-1). Administration of XP + CS treatment in IBS-C rats significantly ameliorated the colonic histological parameters and exerted a positive effect on barrier integrity by restoring the expression of Occludin and zona occludens-1 (ZO-1). Our findings demonstrated that the efficacy of XP and CS in managing constipation in rats is due to the ability of these compounds to form a protective barrier fortifying intestinal integrity and gut functionality.

Abstract
Oxidative stress is a potentially critical factor that affects productive performance in gestating and lactating sows. Polyphenols are a large class of plant secondary metabolites that possess robust antioxidant capacity. All polyphenols are structurally characterized by aromatic rings with multiple hydrogen hydroxyl groups; those make polyphenols perfect hydrogen atoms and electron donors to neutralize free radicals and other reactive oxygen species. In the past decade, increasing attention has been paid to polyphenols as functional feed additives for sows. Polyphenols have been found to alleviate inflammation and oxidative stress in sows, boost their reproductivity, and promote offspring growth and development. In this review, we provided a systematical summary of the latest research advances in plant-derived polyphenols in sow nutrition, and mainly focused on the effects of polyphenols on the (1) antioxidant and immune functions of sows, (2) placental functions and the growth and development of fetal piglets, (3) mammary gland functions and the growth and development of suckling piglets, and (4) the long-term growth and development of progeny pigs. The output of this review provides an important foundation, from more than 8,000 identified plant phenols, to screen potential polyphenols (or polyphenol-enriched plants) as functional feed additives suitable for gestating and lactating sows.

Abstract
The poor water solubility, bioavailability and stability of bioactive compounds have become the bottleneck restricting their wide application, thus developing a functional carrier to realize the efficient encapsulation and activity improvement of active hydrophobic substances has become a research hotspot. In this work, a functional glycosylated fish gelatin (called FG-COS conjugates) carrier based on fish gelatin (FG) and chitooligosaccharide (COS) via Maillard reaction was developed. The functional carrier exhibited good antioxidant activity and high encapsulation of curcumin (Cur). Enhanced antioxidant effect of Cur loaded in FG-COS conjugates (called FG-COS-Cur nanoparticles) was achieved, showing remarkable UV protection on Cur and enhanced intracellular antioxidant activity of FG-COS-Cur nanoparticles. Remarkably, FG-COS-Cur nanoparticles increased the cell viability of H2O2-induced oxidative damage Caco-2 cells, drastically reduced the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and significantly increased intracellular antioxidant enzyme activities, which all exhibited a dose-response relationship. These findings suggested that the FG-COS conjugates with intrinsic antioxidant activity could effectively encapsulate Cur and improved bioavailability for hydrophobic active molecules in functional food field.

Abstract
Autoimmune diseases are caused by the overactivity of the immune system towards self-constituents. Risk factors of autoimmune diseases are multiple and include genetic, epigenetic, environmental, and psychological. Autoimmune chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, including celiac and inflammatory diseases (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), constitute a significant health problem worldwide. Besides the complexity of the symptoms of these diseases, their treatments have only been palliative. Numerous investigations showed that natural phytochemicals could be promising strategies to fight against these autoimmune diseases. In this respect, plant-derived natural compounds such as flavonoids, phenolic acids, and terpenoids exhibited significant effects against three autoimmune diseases affecting the intestine, particularly bowel diseases. This review focuses on the role of natural compounds obtained from medicinal plants in modulating inflammatory auto-immune diseases of the intestine. It covers the most recent literature related to the effect of these natural compounds in the treatment and prevention of auto-immune diseases of the intestine.
