Abstract
BACKGROUND Probiotics are living microorganisms that may confer health benefits to their host if administered in sufficient quantities. However, data on the use of probiotics in transplant recipients are scarce. METHOD This multi-center survey of pediatric nephrologists aimed to examine variations in practice regarding the use of probiotics in pediatric kidney transplant recipients. The survey was conducted via a 10-item questionnaire (developed in Survey Monkey) administered to pediatric nephrologists participating in the Pediatric Nephrology Research Consortium meeting in April 2023. RESULTS Sixty-four pediatric nephrologists completed the survey. Twenty-seven (42.2%) respondents reported having prescribed probiotics to pediatric kidney transplant recipients. The primary reason for probiotic use was the treatment of antibiotic-associated diarrhea (n = 20), with other reasons including recurrent Clostridium difficile infection (n = 15), general gut health promotion (n = 12), recurrent urinary tract infections (n = 8), and parental request (n = 1). Of those who prescribed probiotics, 48.1% held them during periods of neutropenia and 14.8% during central venous line use. Of the 64 respondents, 20 reported the lack of safety data as a concern for using probiotics in kidney transplant recipients. CONCLUSION Pediatric nephrologists are increasingly prescribing probiotics to pediatric kidney transplant recipients; nevertheless, substantial practice variations exist. The paucity of safety data is a significant deterrent to probiotic use in this population.

Abstract
Background The human gut microbiota has been identified as a potentially important factor influencing the development of COVID-19. It is believed that the disease primarily affects the organism through inflammatory pathways. With the aim of improving early diagnosis and targeted therapy, it is crucial to identify the specific gut microbiota associated with COVID-19 and to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying processes. The present study sought to investigate the potential causal relationship between the gut microbiota and COVID-19, and to determine the extent to which inflammatory proteins act as mediators in this relationship. Methods Bidirectional mendelian randomization (MR) and Two-step mediated MR analyses were applied to examine causative associations among 196 gut microbiota, 91 inflammatory proteins and COVID-19. The main analytical method used in the MR was the random effects inverse variance weighted (IVW) method. This was complemented by the Bayesian weighted Mendelian randomization (BWMR) method, which was utilized to test the hypothesis of MR. In order for the results to be deemed reliable, statistical significance was required for both methods. Validation was then carried out using an external dataset, and further meta-analyses were conducted to authenticate that the association was reliable. Results Results of our research indicated that seven gut microbiota were actively associated to the COVID-19 risk. Five inflammatory proteins were associated with COVID-19 risk, of which three were positively and two were negatively identified with COVID-19. Further validation was carried out using sensitivity analyses. Mediated MR results revealed that CCL2 was a possible mediator of causality of family Bifidobacteriaceae and order Bifidobacteriales with COVID-19, mediating at a ratio of 12.73%. Conclusion Suggesting a genetic causation between specific gut microbiota and COVID-19, our present research emphasizes the underlying mediating role of CCL2, an inflammatory factor, and contributes to a deeper understanding of the mechanism of action underlying COVID-19.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to explore a novel methodology for the synthesis of nanocoated probiotics following their collection and cultivation under optimized conditions, in light of their significant contribution to human health. Probiotics are instrumental in sustaining immune health by modulating the gastrointestinal microbiota and facilitating digestion. However, the equilibrium they maintain can be adversely affected by antibiotic treatments. It is critical to investigate the vulnerability of probiotics to antibiotics, considering the potential implications. This research aimed to assess whether nanoparticle coating could augment the probiotics' resistance to antibiotic influence. A strain of Lactococcus lactis (L. lactis) was isolated, cultured, and comprehensively characterized utilizing state-of-the-art methodologies, including the VITEK® 2 compact system, VITEK® MS, and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The nanoparticle coating was performed using iron (III) chloride hexahydrate and tannic acid, followed by an evaluation of the probiotics' resistance to a range of antibiotics. The analysis through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) demonstrated a partial nanoparticle coating of the probiotics, which was further supported by UV/Vis spectroscopy findings, suggesting enhanced resistance to standard antibiotics. The results revealed that this strain possesses a unique protein profile and is genetically similar to strains identified in various other countries. Moreover, nano-encapsulation notably increased the strain's resistance to a spectrum of standard antibiotics, including Benzylpenicillin, Teicoplanin, Oxacillin, Vancomycin, Tetracycline, Rifampicin, Erythromycin, and Clindamycin. These findings imply that nanoparticle-coated probiotics may effectively counteract the detrimental effects of extended antibiotic therapy, thus preserving their viability and beneficial influence on gastrointestinal health.

Abstract
Recently, the role of the gut microbiota in metabolic health, immunity, behavioral balance, longevity, and intestine comfort has been the object of several studies from scientific communities. They were encouraged by a growing interest from food industries and consumers toward novel fermented ingredients and formulations with powerful biological effects, such as pre, pro, and postbiotic products. Depending on the selected strains, the operating conditions, the addition of suitable reagents or enzymes, the equipment, and the reactor configurations, functional compounds with high bioactivity, such as short-chain fatty acids, gamma-aminobutyric acid, bioactive peptides, and serotonin, can be enhanced and/or produced through fermentation of several vegetable matrices. Otherwise, their formation can also be promoted directly in the gut after the dietary intake of fermented foods: In this case, fermentation will aim to increase the content of precursor substances, such as indigestible fibers, polyphenols, some amino acids, and resistant starch, which can be potentially metabolized by endogenous gut microorganisms and converted in healthy molecules. This review provides an overview of the main functional components currently investigated in literature and the associated gut health benefits. The current state of the art about fermentation technology as a promising functionalization tool to promote the direct or indirect formation of gut-health-enhancing components was deepened, highlighting the importance of optimizing microorganism selection, system setups, and process conditions according to the target compound of interest. The collected data suggested the possibility of gaining novel functional food ingredients or products rich in functional molecules through fermentation without performing additional extraction and purification stages, which are needed when conventional culture broths are used.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to comprehensively evaluate the safety of Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus LRa05 (hereinafter "LRa05") to determine its suitability for use as a probiotic in the food industry. First, we sequenced the genome of LRa05 and then determined whether it contained genes associated with antibiotic resistance, virulence, or pathogenicity. Second, we evaluated the safety of LRa05 in vitro by performing a hemolysis assay and examining its ability to produce biogenic amines, its antimicrobial susceptibility, its capacity to transfer antibiotic resistance genes, its genomic stability, and whether it contained potential virulence factors. Third, we investigated the pathogenicity of LRa05 in mice by oral gavage and intraperitoneal injection. A bioinformatics analysis revealed no evidence that the genome of LRa05 contains genes associated with virulence or antibiotic resistance. In addition, the results of in vitro experiments showed that LRa05 does not produce d-lactic acid or exhibit hemolytic activity and is sensitive to clinically relevant antibiotics. Furthermore, a pathogenicity test revealed that LRa05 exhibits no lethality or toxicity in mice. Taken together, these findings indicate that LRa05 is sufficiently safe to be explored as a potential probiotic for use in the food industry.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore the taxonomic identification and evaluate the safety of a bacterium, Enterococcus lactis IDCC 2105, isolated from homemade cheese in Korea, using whole genome sequence (WGS) analysis. It sought to identify the species level of this Enterococcus spp., assess its antibiotic resistance, and evaluate its virulence potential. WGS analysis confirmed the bacterial strain IDCC 2105 as E. lactis and identified genes responsible for resistance to erythromycin and clindamycin, specifically msrC, and eatAv, which are chromosomally located, indicating a minimal risk for horizontal gene transfer. The absence of plasmids in E. lactis IDCC 2105 further diminishes the likelihood of resistance gene dissemination. Additionally, our investigation into seven virulence factors, including hemolysis, platelet aggregation, biofilm formation, hyaluronidase, gelatinase, ammonia production, and β-glucuronidase activity, revealed no detectable virulence traits. Although bioinformatic analysis suggested the presence of collagen adhesion genes acm and scm, these were not corroborated by phenotypic virulence assays. Based on these findings, E. lactis IDCC 2105 presents as a safe strain for potential applications, contributing valuable information on its taxonomy, antibiotic resistance profile, and lack of virulence factors, supporting its use in food products.

Abstract
The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) is an independent, nonprofit science-based organization whose mission is to improve global health through public standards and related products for medicines, food and dietary supplements. Probiotic-based dietary supplements are increasingly popular in the marketplace and USP has developed fourteen monographs specific to probiotic ingredients, including representatives from the Genera Lactobacillus, Bacillus, Streptococcus, and Bifidobacterium. These monographs include the definition of the article, tests for identification, quantification assays (enumeration in the case of probiotics), limits for contaminants, and other quality parameters when appropriate. In addition to quality, the USP also considers the safety of probiotics for monograph development. This report includes an overview of the USP admission evaluation process for probiotics as well as a tabular summary of the probiotic monographs currently available. Pharmacopeia monographs can guide manufacturers and brand owners and protect consumers through establishment of quality standards.

Abstract
This study aimed to isolate lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from a traditional Ethiopian fermented product, Tella, and evaluate their functional properties. Of forty-three isolates, seven LAB were screened and identified as Pediococcus pentosaceus, Latilactobacillus curvatus, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum species. The isolates were tested for their alcohol tolerance, acid and bile resistance, auto-aggregation, co-aggregation, hydrophobicity, antibacterial activity, and antibiotic susceptibility. LAB isolates, specifically P. pentosaceus TAA01, L. mesenteroides TDB22, and L. plantarum TDM41, showed a higher degree of alcohol tolerance in 8% and 10% (w/v) ethanol concentrations. Additionally, these three isolates displayed survival rates >85% in both acidic pH and bile environments. Among the isolates, L. plantarum TDM41 demonstrated the highest auto-aggregation, co-aggregation, and hydrophobicity with (44.9 ± 1.7)%, (41.4 ± 0.2)%, and (52.1 ± 0.1)% values, respectively. The cell-free supernatant of the isolates exhibited antibacterial activity against foodborne pathogens of Escherichia coli, Salmonella Enteritidis, and Staphylococcus aureus. Each isolate exhibited various levels of resistance and susceptibility to seven antibiotics and resistance was observed against four of the antibiotics tested. After performing a principal component analysis, Pediococcus pentosaceus TAA01, L. mesenteroides TDB22, and L. plantarum TDM41 were selected as the most promising ethanol-tolerant probiotic isolates.

Abstract
The present review paper focuses on recent developments in edible films and coatings made of base compounds from biological sources, namely plants, animals, algae, and microorganisms. These sources include by-products, residues, and wastes from agro-food industries and sea products that contribute to sustainability concerns. Chitosan, derived from animal biological sources, such as crustacean exoskeletons, has been the most studied base compound over the past three years. Polysaccharides typically constitute no more than 3-5% of the film/coating base solution, with some exceptions, like Arabic gum. Proteins and lipids may be present in higher concentrations, such as zein and beeswax. This review also discusses the enrichment of these bio-based films and coatings with various functional and/or bioactive compounds to confer or enhance their functionalities, such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-enzymatic properties, as well as physical properties. Whenever possible, a comparative analysis among different formulations was performed. The results of the applications of these edible films and coatings to fruit and vegetable products are also described, including shelf life extension, inhibition of microbial growth, and prevention of oxidation. This review also explores novel types of packaging, such as active and intelligent packaging. The potential health benefits of edible films and coatings, as well as the biodegradability of films, are also discussed. Finally, this review addresses recent innovations in the edible films and coatings industry, including the use of nanotechnologies, aerogels, and probiotics, and provides future perspectives and the challenges that the sector is facing.

Abstract
Bacteria of the genus Lactobacillus are microaerophilic or aerotolerant anaerobic Gram-positive non-spore-forming rods. They are considered essential members of the human gut microbiome; however, recent studies have revealed that these microorganisms are less predominant in the gut microbiome than initially thought. Lactobacillus spp. is mainly known for its use as a probiotic in foods and supplements to prevent and treat specific issues such as infectious diseases, irritable bowel syndrome, and diabetes mellitus. However, Lactobacillus spp. may occasionally cause infections such as bacteremia or infective endocarditis (IE). The present study aimed to review all cases of IE by Lactobacillus spp. and describe the epidemiology, microbiology, clinical characteristics, treatment, and outcomes of this infection by collecting relevant data from studies existing in Pubmed and Scopus until 28 September 2023. A total of 77 studies containing data for 82 patients were included. The median age was 56 years, and 69.6% were male. A prosthetic valve was present in 16% of patients, and 17.3% had previously been on probiotics. The aortic valve was the most commonly involved intracardiac site, followed by the mitral valve. Fever, embolic phenomena, sepsis, and heart failure were the most common clinical presentations. Aminoglycosides and penicillin were the most commonly used antimicrobials for definitive treatment. Surgery was performed in 53.7% of patients. Overall mortality was 17.1%. IE in prosthetic valves and presentation with shock were independently associated with overall mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The microbiome of newborn infants during the first 1000 days, influenced early on by their mothers' microbiome health, mode of delivery and breast feeding, orchestrates the education and programming of the infant's immune system and determines in large part the general health of the infant for years. METHODS PubMed was reviewed for maternal infant microbiome health and microbiota therapy in this setting with prebiotics, probiotics, vaginal seeding and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). RESULTS A healthy nonobese mother, vaginal delivery and strict breast feeding contribute to microbiome health in a newborn and young infant. With reduced microbiome diversity (dysbiosis) during pregnancy, cesarean delivery, prematurity, and formula feeding contribute to dysbiosis in the newborn. Microbiota therapy is an important approach to repair dysbiosis in pregnant women and their infants. Currently available probiotics can have favorable metabolic effects on mothers and infants, but these effects are variable. In research settings, reversal of infant dysbiosis can be achieved via vaginal seeding or FMT. Next generation probiotics in development should replace current probiotics and FMT. CONCLUSIONS The most critical phase of human microbiome development is in the first 2-3 years of life. Preventing and treating dysbiosis during pregnancy and early life can have a profound effect on an infant's later health.

Abstract
Goat milk is produced on mainstream and artisanal farms. It was expected that the farm management may influence the microbial population of the milk. Therefore, we investigated the bacterial content and microbiota composition of raw milk in relation to Dutch goat farm management. After amplicon sequencing we analyzed the taxa at phylum and genus levels, and used the relative values enabling to provide information about the variation among the different samples. On ten farms our results indicated that the number of bacterial colony forming units and microbiota composition of the milk, directly after milking was variable among farms and not related to the farm management system. At the phylum level the phyla Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, and to a minor extend Bacteriodota were the dominant phyla in the raw goat milk, together usually comprising 90% of the total bacterial phyla. The most dominant genera were Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas, Lactococcus, Microbacteria, Acinetobacteria, and Corinebacteria. The number of bacterial phyla and genera does not differ between the mainstream and artisanal farms, although the Shannon index may be numerically higher in the mainstream farms as compared to artisanal farms. In addition, the variability is higher among artisanal farms, which may be due to less standardization of the management. The milk microbiota composition differed among farms. Repeated sampling of a farm showed that this changed over time. The lactic acid producing bacteria showed a similar pattern. Variable microbiota richness amount and diversity of microorganisms were present in different farming systems. We concluded that farm-specific management and sampling moment were the major determining factors for the milk microbiota composition.

Abstract
There is a continual debate on the pros and cons of broad-spectrum versus pathogen-specific antibiotics. The unmet need for a solution for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has put this argument into sharper focus. A shortage of clinically differentiated antibiotics in late-stage clinical development coupled with the global unmet need in the face of the AMR onslaught has exacerbated the treatment options of drug-resistant bacterial infections. An added dimension to this problem is the current understanding of dysbiosis caused by antibiotics, often leading to negative fallout in immunocompromised patients. We attempt to deconstruct the nuances of this debate from an antibiotics discovery and a clinical standpoint.

Abstract
Lactobacillus jensenii is rarely reported as a cause of endocarditis in immunocompetent patients. We describe a case of Lactobacillus jensenii associated native valve endocarditis that was identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) technology. While most Lactobacillus species are generally resistant to vancomycin, Lactobacillus jensenii is frequently susceptible, but treatment requires accurate susceptibility results followed by timely medical and surgical intervention. Probiotic use in patients can be a risk factor for infection with Lactobacillus species.

Abstract
The beneficial effects of lactic acid bacteria are well known and recognized as functional foods that are health benefits for companion animals. This study, for the first time, reports the probiotic properties, safety, and whole-genome sequence of Pediococcus acidilactici GLP06 isolated from feces of beagles. In this study, candidate probiotic bacteria P. acidilactici GLP02 and GLP06 were morphologically characterized and tested for their antimicrobial capacity, tolerance to different conditions (low pH, bile salts, an artificial gastrointestinal model, and high temperature), antibiotic sensitivity, hemolytic activity, cell surface hydrophobicity, autoaggregation activity, and adhesion to Caco-2 cells. P. acidilactici GLP06 showed better probiotic potential. Therefore, P. acidilactici GLP06 was evaluated for in vivo safety in mice and whole-genome sequencing. The results showed, that the supplemented MG06 group (1010 cfu/mL), GLP06 was not only nontoxic to mice, but also promoted the development of the immune system, improved resistance to oxidative stress, and increased the diversity of intestinal microorganisms and the abundance of Lactobacillus. Whole-genome sequencing showed that P. acidilactici GLP06 was 2,014,515 bp and contained 1,976 coding sequences, accounting for 86.12% of the genome, with no drug resistance genes and eight CRISPR sequences. In conclusion, the newly isolated canine-derived P. acidilactici GLP06 had good probiotic potential, was nontoxic to mice and promoted the development of immune organs, improved the biodiversity of the intestinal flora, and had no risk of drug-resistant gene transfer, indicating that P. acidilactici GLP06 can be used as a potential probiotic for the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases in companion animals.

Abstract
Background: With the increasing prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome, the incidence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is also increasing. In the next decade, NAFLD may become the main cause of liver transplantation. Therefore, the choice of treatment plan is particularly important. The purpose of this study was to compare several interventions in the treatment of NAFLD to provide some reference for clinicians in selecting treatment methods.Methods: We searched Public Medicine (PubMed), Medline, Excerpta Medica Database (Embase), and Cochrane Library from January 2013 to January 2023 to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in English. The network meta-analysis was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Forty-three studies accounting for a total of 2,969 patients were included, and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), total cholesterol (TC), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) were selected as outcome measures for analysis and comparison.Results: We evaluated the results of drug, diet, and lifestyle interventions between the intervention and control groups. Curcumin (CUN) and probiotics (PTC) were selected for medication, the Mediterranean diet (MDED) was selected for special diet (SPD), and various kinds of exercise and lifestyle advice were selected for lifestyle interventions (LFT). The SUCRA was used to rank interventions according to the effect on ALT indicators (SUCRA: PTC 80.3%, SPD 65.2%, LFT 61.4%, PLB 32.8%, CUN 10.2%), TC indicators (SUCRA: PTC 89.4%, SPD 64%, CUN 34%, LFT 36.6%, PLB 17%), and LDL indicators (SUCRA: PTC 84.2%, CUN 69.5%, LFT 51.7%, PLB 30.1%, SPD 14.5%). The pairwise meta-analysis results showed that MDED was significantly better than NT in improving ALT [SMD 1.99, 95% CI (0.38, 3.60)]. In terms of improving TC and LDL, ATS was significantly better than NT [SMD 0.19, 95% CI (0.03, 0.36)] [SMD 0.18, 95% CI (0.01, 0.35)].Conclusion: Our study showed that PTC is most likely to be the most effective treatment for improving NAFLD indicators. Professional advice on diet or exercise was more effective in treating NAFLD than no intervention.

Abstract
Due to their numerous well-established applications in the food industry, there have been many studies regarding the adaptation and evolution of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in a wide variety of hosts and environments. Progress in sequencing technology and continual decreases in its costs have led to the availability of LAB genome sequence data. Bioinformatics has been central to the extraction of valuable information from these raw genome sequence data. This paper presents the roles of bioinformatics tools and databases in understanding the adaptation and evolution of LAB, as well as the bioinformatics methods used in the initial screening of LAB for probiotic potential. Moreover, the advantages, challenges, and limitations of employing bioinformatics for these purposes are discussed.

Abstract
Lactobacilli are gram-positive bacteria usually found in the normal flora and are commonly used as probiotic treatments for vaginal candidiasis. Lactobacilli are normally considered non-pathogenic; however, certain risk factors can make a patient susceptible to severe infections. This case describes an immunocompetent 61-year-old female with an automated intracardiac defibrillator who presented with a 10-day history of nausea and vomiting. Furthermore, diagnostic tests, including a transesophageal echocardiography, revealed a large vegetation, and blood cultures were consistently positive for Lactobacillus. The patient was treated with intravenous penicillin and gentamicin, along with removal of the automated intracardiac defibrillator. In patients with significant underlying conditions, physicians should consider Lactobacillus as a causative organism to avoid delays in treatment.

Abstract
Vaccines are one of the greatest successes of public health, preventing millions of cases of disease and death in children each year. However, the efficacy of many vaccines can vary greatly between infants from geographically and socioeconomically distinct locations. Differences in the composition of the intestinal microbiome have emerged as one of the main factors that can account for variations in immunisation outcomes. In this Review, we assess the influence of the gut microbiota upon early life immunity, focusing on two important members of the microbiota with health-promoting and immunomodulatory properties: Bifidobacterium and Bacteroides. Additionally, we discuss their immune stimulatory microbial properties, interactions with the host, and their effect on vaccine responses and efficacy in infants. We also provide an overview of current microbiota-based approaches to enhance vaccine outcomes, and describe novel microbe-derived components that could lead to safer, more effective vaccines and vaccine adjuvants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Congenital heart diseases (CHD) are the most common birth defects. Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in premature infants, and probiotics can be used to protect NEC. CASE REPORT We present a term infant with aortic coarctation who developed sepsis with Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG after probiotic use, successfully treated with ampicillin. The baby unfortunately died of acute cardiac arrest on the 90th day of life. CONCLUSION Probiotic-associated sepsis may develop in infants with various risk factors such as central catheterization, long-term mechanical ventilation and in those at risk for NEC.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a major health burden in peterm neonates with mortality rates between 21% and 50%. Prophylaxis is of primary importance as early diagnosis is hindered by the lack of specific signs and laboratory markers. Although probiotics have been routinely used for NEC prophylaxis in neonatal intensive care units around the world, clinical trials provide contradictory data, which fuels an ongoing debate about their efficacy and safety.
Aims: To perform a review and bibliometric analysis on available clinical trials and case reports data on the safety and efficacy of probiotics in preterm neonates and identify relevant publication trends and patterns.
Methods: A bibliometric search for publications on the topic was performed in the Web of Science Core Collection database and the resulting records analyzed in bibliometrix package in R.
Results: Trends in publication activity, historical direct citation network relationships and keyword co-ocurrences were discussed in the context of the most recent therapeutic recommendations.
Conclusion: We took a round view of the potential drawbacks to probiotic use in preterm infants and their possible solutions.

Abstract
Malignant neoplasm is one of the most incurable diseases among inflammatory diseases. Researchers have been studying for decades to win over this lethal disease and provide the light of hope to humankind. The gastrointestinal bacteria of human hold a complex ecosystem and maintain homeostasis. One hundred trillion microbes are residing in the gastrointestinal tract of human. Disturbances in the microbiota of human's gastrointestinal tract can create immune response against inflammation and also can develop diseases, including cancer. The bacteria of the gastrointestinal tract of human can secrete a variety of metabolites and bioproducts which aid in the preservation of homeostasis in the host and gut. During pathogenic dysbiosis, on the other hand, numerous microbiota subpopulations may increase and create excessive levels of toxins, which can cause inflammation and cancer. Furthermore, the immune system of host and the epithelium cell can be influenced by gut microbiota. Probiotics, which are bacteria that live in the gut, have been protected against tumor formation. Probiotics are now studied to see if they can help fight dysbiosis in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy because of their capacity to maintain gut homeostasis. Countless numbers of gut bacteria have demonstrated anti-cancer efficiency in cancer treatment, prevention, and boosting the efficiency of immunotherapy. The review article has briefly explained the anti-cancer immunity of gut microbes and their application in treating a variety of cancer. This review paper also highlights the pre-clinical studies of probiotics against cancer and the completed and ongoing clinical trials on cancers with the two most common and highly effective probiotics Lactobacillus and Bacillus spp.

Abstract
In this study, the protective functions of bacteria-free conditioned media from Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species against ultraviolet radiation-induced skin ageing and associated cellular damage were investigated. The effects of ultraviolet radiation-induced reactive oxygen species production were suppressed by all conditioned media; particularly, the loss of cell viability and downregulation of collagen gene expression were significantly reversed by the conditioned media from B. longum and B. lactis. Further exa mination of potential anti-pigmentation effects revealed that the B. lactis-derived conditioned media significantly inhibited tyrosinase activity and alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone-induced melanin production in human epidermal melanocytes. Further, the conditioned media suppressed the phosphorylation of extracellular signal- related kinase, which functions as an upstream regulator of melanogenesis. Therefore, B. lactis-derived conditioned media can potentially protect against cellular damage involved in skin-ageing processes.

Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a multifactorial disease. The incidence of this type of cancer in younger patients has increased in recent years, and more strategies are needed to prevent and delay the progression of CRC. Probiotics play an adjunctive role in the prevention and treatment of CRC and can not only prevent the onset and delay the progression of disease but also reduce the side effects after the application of anti-cancer drugs. The anti-cancer effect of individual probiotics has been extensively studied, and the exact curative effect of various probiotics has been found, but the anti-cancer effect of mixed probiotics is still not well summarized. In this review, we discuss the positive effects of mixed probiotics on CRC and the related mechanisms of action, especially VSL#3 (VSL Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Gaithersburg, MD, USA), thus providing new ideas for the treatment of CRC. Moreover, we suggest the need to search for more therapeutic possibilities, especially via the research and application of synbiotics and postbiotics.

Abstract
The intestinal microbiota has a key role in human health via the interaction with the somatic and immune cells in the digestive tract environment. Food, through matrix effect, nutrient and non-nutrient molecules, is a key regulator of microbiota diversity. As a food contaminant, the pesticide chlorpyrifos (CPF) has an effect on the composition of the intestinal microbiota and induces perturbation of microbiota. Prebiotics (and notably inulin) are known for their ability to promote an equilibrium of the microbiota that favours saccharolytic bacteria. The SHIME® dynamic in vitro model of the human intestine was exposed to CPF and inulin concomitantly for 30 days, in order to assess variations in both the bacterial populations and their metabolites. Various analyses of the microbiota (notably temporal temperature gradient gel electrophoresis) revealed a protective effect of the prebiotic through inhibition of the enterobacterial (E. coli) population. Bifidobacteria were only temporarily inhibited at D15 and recovered at D30. Although other potentially beneficial populations (lactobacilli) were not greatly modified, their activity and that of the saccharolytic bacteria in general were highlighted by an increase in levels of short-chain fatty acids and more specifically butyrate. Given the known role of host-microbiota communication, CPF's impact on the body's homeostasis remains to be determined.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Infants and children with short bowel syndrome (SBS) are presumed to be at risk of gut microbial dysbiosis with potential sequelae of bacterial overgrowth that include sepsis, D-lactic acidosis, mucosal inflammation and malabsorption. In neonatal piglets with SBS, we compared intestinal microbial composition, short chain fatty acids (SCFA) and adaptation given probiotic treatment (Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium spp.) versus oral metronidazole. METHODS Following 75% distal small intestinal resection, piglets were allocated to: probiotic (PRO, 500mg BID n=7), metronidazole (MET, 15mg/kg BID n=8) and placebo (PLA, 500mg BID n=8). After 10 days of parenteral and enteral nutrition, 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing (colon tissue and stool) were undertaken and SCFA analysis (stool and colon effluent) performed using gas chromatography. RESULTS In colon, Shannon diversity was higher for PRO compared to MET and PLA (p=0.002). PRO and PLA increased abundance of Bacteroidetes species (e.g. Bacteroides fragilis), compared to MET (p<0.001). PRO compared to PLA increased abundance of Firmicutes species (e.g. Lactobacillus fermentum) (p<0.001). MET increased abundance of Proteobacteria members, predominately Enterobacteriaceae compared to PRO (p=0.004). In stool, microbial findings were similar and SCFA (butyrate) concentrations were highest for PRO (p=0.003) compared to MET. CONCLUSION In pediatric SBS, the empiric use of oral antibiotics, such as metronidazole, is common for presumed clinical consequences of microbial dysbiosis. In this study of SBS piglets, that approach was associated with decreased microbial diversity and increased abundance of potentially inflammatory Proteobacteria. In contrast, a probiotic treatment using Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium spp. increased both diversity and SCFAs. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract
Rotavirus (RV) is the main cause of gastroenteritis in children. Prebiotics and, more recently, postbiotics are used for preventing and treating gastrointestinal infections. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of a LactofidusTM, short-chain galacto-oligosaccharides (scGOS) and long-chain fructo-oligosaccharides (lcFOS) mixture, and their combination on RV infection, in a rat model, for early life diarrhea. Fifteen litters of suckling rats were intragastrically administered daily with the vehicle, the prebiotic mixture, the postbiotic or the combination. The RV was inoculated on day 5 and then fecal samples were clinically evaluated daily. Viral shedding, intestinal permeability assay, in vitro blocking assay, immunoglobulin profiles, and anti-RV response were assessed at day 8 and 16 of life. Cecal microbiota composition, intestinal gene expression, and short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were analyzed at day 16. The incidence and severity of diarrhea were significantly reduced by all the supplementations. Moreover, they showed blocking activity, changes in the immunoglobulin profiles, in gut microbiota, and in the intestinal gene expression. The prebiotic mixture reduced gut permeability and changed the SCFA profile, whereas the postbiotic enhanced the expression of Toll-like receptors (TLRs). The combination preserved most of the individual observed effects, and furthermore, complementary effects, such as an increase in white blood cells and lymphocytes recruitment, as well as upregulation of TLR7 and TLR9 gene expression.

Abstract
The development of probiotics targeting non-intestinal body sites continues to generate interest amongst researchers, biotech companies and consumers alike. A key consideration for any bacterial strain to be developed into a probiotic is a robust assessment of its safety profile. Streptococcus salivarius strain M18 was originally isolated from a healthy adult and evaluated for its probiotic capabilities targeted to dental and oral health applications. This publication presents the safety characterisation of strain M18. Application of a diverse range of techniques showed that strain M18 can be specifically distinguished from other S. salivarius using a variety of molecular and phenotypic methodologies and that it lacks any relevant antibiotic resistance or virulence determinants. Direct comparison of the strain M18 safety profile with that of the prototype S. salivarius probiotic, S. salivarius strain K12, supports the proposition that strain M18 is indeed safe for probiotic application in humans.

Abstract
To date, probiotic bacteria are used in the diet and have various clinical applications. There are reports of antibiotic resistance genes in these bacteria that can transfer to other commensal and pathogenic bacteria. The aim of this study was to use whole-genome sequence analysis to identify antibiotic resistance genes in a group of bacterial with probiotic properties. Also, this study followed existing issues about the importance and presence of antibiotic resistance genes in these bacteria and the dangers that may affect human health in the future. In the current study, a collection of 126 complete probiotic bacterial genomes was analyzed for antibiotic resistance genes. The results of the current study showed that there are various resistance genes in these bacteria that some of them are transferable to other bacteria. The tet(W) tetracycline resistance gene was more than other antibiotic resistance genes in these bacteria and this gene was found in Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus. In our study, the most numbers of antibiotic resistance genes were transferred with mobile genetic elements. We propose that probiotic companies before the use of a micro-organism as a probiotic, perform an antibiotic susceptibility testing for a large number of antibiotics. Also, they perform analysis of complete genome sequence for prediction of antibiotic resistance genes.

Abstract
PURPOSE Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP) is one of the most common nosocomial infections in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Using new strategies to prevent nosocomial infections is crucial to avoid antibiotic resistance. One of these strategies is the utilization of probiotics. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of probiotic prophylaxis in preventing VAP in mechanically ventilated children. METHOD This study was a randomized, double-blind clinical trial. The study included 72 children under 12 years of age under mechanical ventilation for more than 48 h in the Mofid Children's Hospital. Patients were randomly divided into Limosilactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 probiotic recipients (n = 38) and placebo groups (n = 34). In addition to the standard treatment, both groups received a sachet containing probiotics or a placebo twice a day. Children were screened for VAP based on clinical and laboratory evidence. RESULTS The mean age of children in the intervention and placebo groups was 4.60 ± 4.84 and 3.38 ± 3.49 years, respectively. After adjusting the other variables, it was observed that chance of VAP among probiotics compared to the placebo group was significantly decreased (OR adjusted = 0.29; 95% CI: 0.09-0.95). Also, probiotic was associated with a significantly lower chance of diarrhea than the placebo group (OR adjusted = 0.09; 95% CI: 0.01-0.96). CONCLUSION Probiotic utilization is effective in preventing the incidence of VAP and diarrhea in children under mechanical ventilation in the PICU.

Abstract
Membrane biofouling in water purification plants is a serious issue of worldwide concern. Various chemical, physical, and biochemical processes are practised for membrane clean-up. A high-dosage treatment adversely affects the life expectancy of the membrane, and minimum dosage seems unable to deteriorate the biofilms on the membrane. It is reported that quorum quenchers like nitric oxide (NO) disrupt biofilm signals through metabolic rewiring, and also NO is known to be secreted by probiotics (good bacteria). In the present review, it is hypothesized that if probiotic biofilms secreting NO are used, other microbes that aggregate on the filtration membrane could be mitigated. The concept of probiotic administration on filtration membrane seeks to be encouraged because probiotic bacteria will not be hazardous, even if released during filtration. The fundamental motive to present probiotics as a resource for sequestering NO may serve as multifunctional bioweapons for membrane remediation, which will virtually guarantee their long-term sustainability and green approach.

Abstract
Lactobacillus is a facultative anaerobic Gram-positive rod usually found in the normal microbiota of the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tract. Frequently dismissed as a contaminant, it is implicated in several diseases. We describe a rare case of endocarditis caused by Lactobacillus jensenii in an immunocompetent 40 year-old male patient, with a history of mitral valve repair. He presented complaining of asthenia and his laboratory results showed a moderate increase in inflammatory markers. A trans-thoracic echocardiography confirmed a vegetation on the posterior leaflet of the mitral valve, with associated severe mitral insufficiency. Blood cultures revealed the significant growth of L. jensenii. The patient developed an acute abdomen with intestinal ischemia and occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery, requiring urgent surgical laparotomy. A cerebral MRI showed multiple minor emboli in the frontal and left parietal cortex. The patient consequently underwent surgery to have his mitral valve replaced with a mechanical valve. L. jensenii was isolated in culture from the mitral valve and from a mesenteric artery thrombus. After one week of combined amoxicillin and gentamicin therapy, ampicillin alone was continued for a total of six weeks and the patient could be discharged in a good general condition. Only five cases of L. jensenii are described in literature, and they mainly affect immunocompromised hosts. In our case, a long delay between the start of symptoms and the full onset of the disease was observed. tolerance of Lactobacilli to penicillin is a key determinant of therapy choice.

Abstract
Increasing evidence has indicated that oxidative stress is associated with the health of infants. Bifidobacterium, especially B. longum subsp. longum strains, are abundant in the gut microbiota of infants, which may have the potential to ameliorate oxidative damage. Thus, this study aimed to isolate and screen B. longum subsp. longum strains with probiotic characters and antioxidant properties as infants’ dietary supplements. In this study, 24 B. longum subsp. longum strains were isolated from 15 healthy infants identified via 16S rRNA and heat shock protein 60 (hsp60) sequences. B. longum subsp. longum B13, F2, K4, K5, K10, K13, and K15 strains were selected based on high values obtained from autoaggregation, hydrophobicity, and adhesion assays to HT-29 cells. Among these seven strains, B. longum subsp. longum F2, K5, K10, and K15 were selected according to the high tolerance of gastrointestinal tract conditions compared to Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12. Among these four strains, B. longum subsp. longum K5 was susceptible to common antibiotics and showed the highest intestinal epithelial cell proliferation of CCD 841 CoN. Additionally, B. longum subsp. longum K5 showed a strong antioxidant capacity, and its supernatant exhibited better activity of reducing power, hydroxyl radical scavenging, and DPPH radical scavenging than that of the intact cells with cell-free extracts. The findings indicated that B. longum subsp. longum K5 could be used as a probiotic candidate in infant nutrition.

Abstract
Although the effectiveness of probiotics has only been proven in specific conditions, their use in children is massively widespread because of their perception as harmless products. Recent evidence raises concerns about probiotics' safety, especially but not only in the paediatric population due to severe opportunistic infections after their use. This review aimed at summarising available case reports on invasive infections related to probiotics' use in children. For this purpose, we assessed three electronic databases to identify papers describing paediatric patients with documented probiotic-derived invasive infections, with no language restrictions. A total of 49 case reports from 1995 to June 2021 were identified. The infections were caused by Lactobacillus spp. (35%), Saccharomyces spp. (29%), Bifidobacterium spp. (31%), Bacillus clausii (4%), and Escherichia coli (2%). Most (80%) patients were younger than 2 years old and sepsis was the most observed condition (69.4%). All the patients except one had at least one condition facilitating the development of invasive infection, with prematurity (55%) and intravenous catheter use (51%) being the most frequent. Three (6%) children died. Given the large use of probiotics, further studies aiming at evaluating the real incidence of probiotic-associated systemic infections are warranted.

Abstract
Rice bran oil is known as wonder oil and it is the most important vegetable oil in Asia. Rice bran oil is extracted from bran that is the outer hard layer of rice. It is an emerging category in edible oil with a lot of nutritional properties and health benefits. Rice bran oil is heart-friendly, boosts up immunity, and prevents from other diseases occurring commonly in Pakistan. The current study aimed to stabilize rice bran oil through different probiotic isolates and to assess the nutritional content of rice bran oil after stabilization. The study was aimed to inactivate naturally occurring lipases that can hydrolyze oil into glycerol and free fatty acid which is a serious problem that gives it a rancid taste and smell. Antilipase activity was used to inactivate naturally occurring lipases that are a huge threat to the stabilization process. The fermentation process utilizes antilipase activity without affecting the nutritional value of oil. Lactobacillus strains were used for the stabilization of rice bran oil. Rice bran oil was extracted in the Soxhlet apparatus. The probiotic lab isolates Lactobacillus delbrueckii S2, Lactobacillus casei S5 and Lactobacillus plantarum S13 were applied to it to increase its shelf life and prevent oxidative rancidity. The extraction temperature of rice bran oil was maintained above 40 °C to inhibit lipase activity. Rice bran oil samples were stored at refrigeration temperature to arrest lipase activity. Probiotics maintained acidic pH to keep oil stabilization. Qualitative analysis was done to confirm rice bran oil stabilization. Determination of Free Fatty Acid (FFA) and saponification value confirmed that oxidative rancidity of rice bran oil was controlled by probiotics. FFA count was less than 10% and Saponification Value (SV) was 180. GC analysis was performed to analyze the FFA profile. Gas Chromatography results have shown 3 fatty acids. Statistical analysis has shown non-significant effect on different incubation temperatures of Lactobacillus isolates. Among the biological methods of stabilization, the use of probiotics is a novel concept and recommended for commercial application.

Probiotic and Antioxidant Properties of Lactic Acid Bacteria Isolated from Indigenous Fermented Tea Leaves (Miang) of North Thailand and Promising Application in Synbiotic Formulation. Abstract
Miang, a traditional fermented tea from Northern Thailand, potentially hosts beneficial probiotic bacteria. A total of 133 isolates of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from Miang were evaluated for probiotic potential. Among them, 5 strains showed high tolerance to bile and acidic conditions and were selected for further evaluation. All selected strains showed inhibitory activity against human pathogens, including Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella ser. Typhimurium. Nucleotide sequences analysis of the 16S rRNA gene revealed that 3 isolates were identified as Lactobacillus pentosus; the remaining were L. plantarum and Pediococcus pentosaceus, respectively. All 5 strains showed a high survival rate of more than 90% when exposed to simulated gastrointestinal conditions and were also susceptible to antibiotics such as erythromycin, tetracycline, and gentamycin, and resistant to vancomycin, streptomycin, and polymycin. In addition, the selected isolates exhibited different degrees of cell surface hydrophobicity (58.3–92.9%) and auto-aggregation (38.9–46.0%). The antioxidant activity reflected in DPPH scavenging activities of viable cells and their cell-free culture supernatants (CFCS) were also found in selected LAB isolates. Moreover, selected LAB isolates showed ability to grow on commercial prebiotics (GOS, FOS or XOS). The preliminary study of spray-drying using cyclodextrin as thermoprotectant suggested that all strains can be designed as a powdered formulation. L. pentosus A14-6 was the best strain, with high tolerance against simulated gastrointestinal conditions, high cell surface hydrophobicity, effective response to tested commercial oligosaccharides, especially XOS, and the highest cell antioxidant properties. L. pentosus A14-6 was therefore targeted for further applications in food and synbiotic applications.

Abstract
In the management of intestinal health problems, the targeted use of probiotic microorganisms is a common therapeutic measure with a long-standing tradition. In clinical dentistry however, probiotics-based therapy is still a rather new and developing field, whose usefulness for the control of gingivitis and periodontitis has been questioned by recent meta-analyses and systematic reviews. The purpose of the subsequent descriptive review is to provide an introduction to the concept of probiotic microorganisms and their multifaceted health-promoting interactions with the human host and microbial competitors, followed by a detailed comparison of the results of available controlled clinical trials assessing the use of probiotics in the control of gingival and periodontal inflammations. It aims at contributing to a deeper understanding of the unique capabilities of probiotics to resolve chronic plaque-induced inflammation even in the absence of mechanical plaque control and will discuss how possible misconceptions about the rationale for using probiotics may have led to the present controversies about their usefulness as a therapeutic option.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this paper is to summarize the current evidence on probiotics' uses as an adjuvant for ulcerative colitis (UC) and provide an understanding of the effect of probiotics supplement on the immune system and inflammatory responses among UC patients and subsequent therapeutic benefits. CONTENT A narrative review of all the relevant published papers known to the author was conducted. SUMMARY UC is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that results in inflammation and ulceration of the colon and rectum. The primary symptoms of active disease are diarrhea, abdominal pain, and rectal bleeding. About 70% of the human immune system (mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue) originates in the intestine. Probiotics are live microorganisms that help in stabilizing the gut microbiota (nonimmunologic gut defense), restores normal flora, and enhance the humoral immune system. Probiotics especially Bifidobacterium, Saccharomyces boulardii, and lactic acid-producing bacteria have been used as an adjunct therapy for treating UC to ameliorate disease-related symptoms and reduce relapse rate. Probiotics, in general, modulate the immune system through their ability to enhance the mucosal barrier function, or through their interaction with the local immune system to enhance regulatory T cell responses, decrease the pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin 1 beta and increase anti-inflammatory factor interleukin 10. OUTLOOK More studies are needed to explore the properties of the various probiotic bacterial strains, their different uses, as well as the dosage of probiotics and duration for treating different disorders. Further clinical investigations on mechanisms of action and how probiotics modulate the immune system may lead to further advances in managing IBD.

Abstract
A synbiotic containing Lactiplantibacillus plantarum [American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) strain identifier 202195] and fructooligosaccharide was reported to reduce the risk of sepsis in young infants in rural India. Here, the whole genome of two isolates of L. plantarum ATCC 202195, which were deposited to the ATCC approximately 20 years apart, were sequenced and analyzed to verify their taxonomic and strain-level identities, identify potential antimicrobial resistant genes and virulence factors, and identify genetic characteristics that may explain the observed clinical effects of L. plantarum ATCC 202195. Minimum inhibitory concentrations for selected antimicrobial agents were determined using broth dilution and gradient strip diffusion techniques. The two L. plantarum ATCC 202195 isolates were genetically identical with only three high-quality single nucleotides polymorphisms identified, and with an average nucleotide identity of 99.99%. In contrast to previously published reports, this study determined that each isolate contained two putative plasmids. No concerning acquired or transferable antimicrobial resistance genes or virulence factors were identified. Both isolates were sensitive to several clinically important antibiotics including penicillin, ampicillin and gentamicin, but resistant to vancomycin. Genes involved in stress response, cellular adhesion, carbohydrate metabolism and vitamin biosynthesis are consistent with features of probiotic organisms.

Abstract
Fermentation is one of if not the oldest food processing technique, yet it is still an emerging field when it comes to its numerous mechanisms of action and potential applications. The effect of microbial activity on the taste, bioavailability and preservation of the nutrients and the different food matrices has been deciphered by the insights of molecular microbiology. Among those roles of fermentation in the food chain, biopreservation remains the one most debated. Presumably because it has been underestimated for quite a while, and only considered - based on a food safety and technological approach - from the toxicological and chemical perspective. Biopreservation is not considered as a traditional use, where it has been by design - but forgotten - as the initial goal of fermentation. The 'modern' use of biopreservation is also slightly different from the traditional use, due mainly to changes in cooling of food and other ways of preservation, Extending shelf life is considered to be one of the properties of food additives, classifying - from our perspective - biopreservation wrongly and forgetting the role of fermentation and food cultures. The present review will summarize the current approaches of fermentation as a way to preserve and protect the food, considering the different way in which food cultures and this application could help tackle food waste as an additional control measure to ensure the safety of the food.

Abstract
This study investigated the prophylactic effects of five Lactobacillus casei strains on house dust mite (HDM)-induced asthma in mice. BALB/c mice were orally administered with L. casei strains for one week before HDM treatment. Ketotifen and Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG were used as positive controls. All L. casei strains decreased the number of granulocytes and the levels of Th2 and Th17 inflammatory cytokines in the lungs, L. casei3 significantly decreased the airway inflammation score. Further studies showed that L. casei3, L. casei4, and L. casei5 decreased the chemokine levels, L. casei2, L. casei4, and L. casei5 promoted the secretion of secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA), L. casei2 upregulated the interleukin (IL)-10 levels, and L. casei1 had no effect on these immune indices. L. casei1 and L. casei4 decreased the serum levels of total IgE and HDM-specific IgG1, respectively. L. casei3 and L. casei5 decreased both HDM-specific IgG1 and total IgE levels. L. casei2 did not affect the levels of these immunoglobulins. The gut microbiota analysis revealed that all five L. casei strains enhanced the richness of the gut microbiota mainly by increasing the abundance of Firmicutes, while there were differences at the genus level.Thus, the prophylactic effects of L. casei on HDM-induced mixed chronic airway inflammatory asthma exerted as they differentially affected the immune responses and gut microbiota composition. L. casei3, which exhibited the highest prophylactic effect, increased the acetate and propionate contents in a strain-dependent manner.

The extensive abuse of chemical synthetic additives has raised increased attention to food safety. As substitutes, probiotics play an important role in human health as they balance the intestinal microbes in host. This study was aimed to isolate and evaluate the potential probiotic activities of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from a local pickled leaf mustard (PLM) from Wuwei city in Anhui province through in vitro experiments. A total of 17 LAB strains were obtained as probiotics. All the isolates were sensitive to chloramphenicol, tetracycline, erythromycin, and doxycycline but exhibited resistance to antibiotics (e.g., streptomycin, kanamycin, gentamicin, and vancomycin). Out of the 17 strains, 9 were sensitive to most of the antibiotics and had no cytotoxic activity on human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line (HT-29) cells. The isolated AWP4 exhibited antibacterial activity against four indicator pathogen strains (ATCC8099: Escherichia coli, ATCC6538: Staphylococcus aureus, ATCC9120: Salmonella enteric, and BNCC192105: Shigella sonnei). Based on the phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene, AWP4 belonged to Lactiplantibacillus plantarum. This study indicated that the Wuwei local PLM could be a potential resource to isolate beneficial LAB as probiotics. The data provide theoretical guidance for further animal experiments to estimate the probiotic effect and safety of Lpb. plantarum AWP4 in vivo.

Abstract
CONTEXT Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer deaths. Recently, much attention has been given to the microbiome and probiotics as preventive and therapeutic approaches to CRC and the mechanisms involved. OBJECTIVES To interpret the findings of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of probiotics relative to patients with CRC and to outline challenges of and future directions for using probiotics in the management and prevention of CRC. DATA SOURCES Web of Science, PubMed, ProQuest, Wile, y and Scopus databases were searched systematically from January 17-20, 2020, in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. STUDY SELECTION Primacy RCTs that reported the effects of administration to patients with CRC of a probiotic vs a placebo were eligible to be included. DATA EXTRACTION The studies were screened and selected independently by 2 authors on the basis of prespecified inclusion and exclusion criteria. The data extraction and risk-of-bias assessment were also performed independently by 2 authors. RESULTS A total of 23 RCTs were eligible for inclusion. Probiotics supplementation in patients with CRC improved their quality of life, enhanced gut microbiota diversity, reduced postoperative infection complications, and inhibited pro-inflammatory cytokine production. The use of certain probiotics in patients with CRC also reduced the side effects of chemotherapy, improved the outcomes of surgery, shortened hospital stays, and decreased the risk of death. Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus were the common probiotics used across all studies. CONCLUSION Probiotics have beneficial effects in patients with CRC regardless of the stage of cancer. There is an opportunity for probiotics to be used in mainstream health care as a therapy in the fight against CRC, especially in early stages; however, larger clinical trialsof selected or a cocktail of probiotics are needed to confirm the efficacy, dosage, and interactions with chemotherapeutics agents.
