Abstract
INTRODUCTION Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are potentially traumatic events associated with negative health outcomes. Children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) are at increased risk of ACEs, however, research on ACEs in children with NDD and their parents, and its possible relation to child problems, is limited. We aimed to explore the association between ACEs in parents and children; if there is an association between parental ACEs and NDD traits, and if ACEs in parents or children are associated with the child's emotional behavioral problems. METHODS The study included 86 mothers, 37 fathers, and 48 children diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and/or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), recruited from two child psychiatric clinics in Sweden. Parents provided demographic information and reported their own ACEs, NDD traits, and their children's emotional and behavioral problems. Children responded to measure of ACEs. RESULTS Maternal ACEs were significantly correlated with child ACEs (r = 0.382, p = 0.034), as well as with maternal ADHD traits (r = 0.451, p < 0.001) and ASD traits (r = 0.451, p < 0.001). Child ACEs also correlated with child emotional problems (r = 0.304, p = 0.038). Regression analysis revealed a relationship between maternal ACEs and child emotional and behavioral problems (β = 0.511, p = 0.036). None of these associations were found in fathers. CONCLUSION This study highlights the need for ACE screenings in evaluations of children with ADHD/ASD and suggests clinicians to consider maternal trauma and maternal NDD traits. Future research should explore paternal involvement.

Abstract
Toddler visual attention development correlates with subsequent language, cognitive, and social developmental outcomes. This study investigates the association of maternal trauma on toddler looking behaviors in 39 mother-child dyads from the Western Cape Province, South Africa. At 15 months postpartum, maternal trauma was assessed using the Life Events Checklist and toddler multisensory attention skills were measured using the Multisensory Attention Assessment Protocol (MAAP) during eye-tracking. We used two-way mixed ANOVA to analyze the association of maternal trauma and MAAP condition with attention maintenance, intersensory matching, and attention shifting. This study provides support for the MAAP's reliability with a sample of 15-month-old toddlers from a low-income setting. We observed a significant interaction between MAAP condition and maternal trauma group on attention maintenance, but pairwise comparisons did not meet the threshold for statistical significance. In a stratified analysis, toddlers of mothers in the low trauma exposure group demonstrated significant differences in attention maintenance, intersensory matching, and attention shifting by condition. Unexpectedly, toddlers of mothers in the high trauma exposure group did not exhibit significant differences in these attentional skills, potentially indicating attentional adaptations. Further research is needed to explore the relationship between the intergenerational transmission of trauma on infant and toddler multisensory attention skills in low-income settings.

Abstract
Although maternal adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are known to be related to the emotional and behavioral problems (EBPs) of offspring, few studies have surveyed the intergenerational effects of paternal ACEs. In addition, no study has yet explored the combination and interaction effects of maternal and paternal ACEs on preschool children's EBPs in China, and the gender differences in these relationships also remain to be explored. A total of 3,575 preschool children from 12 preschools from Hefei city of Anhui province were included in this study. We used a binomial logistic regression to examine the relationship between maternal ACEs, paternal ACEs and children's EBPs. Logistic regression analysis indicated that maternal and paternal ACEs were significantly related to EBPs in children, respectively. The high maternal ACEs + high paternal ACEs group had the greatest association with children's EBPs. Interaction analysis results showed that, compared with the reference group (low maternal ACEs×low paternal ACEs), the other group (high maternal ACEs×high paternal ACEs ) were significantly related to children's EBPs (OR = 1.84, 95%CI: 1.55-2.19). We found that there were no gender differences in the combination and interaction effects (P>0.05). When fathers and mothers were jointly exposed to high levels of ACEs, children had a higher risk of developing EBPs than when they were exposed independently. Future studies should fully explore the intergenerational health effects of parental ACEs so that references for promoting the physical and mental health of preschool children can be developed.

Abstract
Improving social and emotional well-being (SEWB) among Indigenous adolescents is crucial. Since neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) are common in Indigenous people and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are important contributors to negative health outcomes throughout the lifespan, we investigated whether limited ACE exposure is associated with reduced risk of NDDs in Australian Indigenous teens using the data from multiple waves (Wave 1 to Wave 9, and Wave 11) of the Longitudinal Study of Indigenous Children (LSIC). We also examined the role of other protective factors, such as Indigenous cultural identity and school connectedness, against NDDs. A strengths-based approach using mixed-effects logistic regression models examined the protective effect of limited ACE exposure (from LSIC waves 1-9) on NDDs (outcome from LSIC wave 11), adjusting for sociodemographic factors. The NDDs included autism, ADHD, intellectual, neurological, and specific learning disabilities. Of the 370 individuals analysed, 73.2% valued Indigenous cultural identity, and 70.5% were strongly connected at school. More than one-fourth (27.8%) reported limited ACE exposure, while the majority was not diagnosed with NDDs (93%). Longitudinal analysis revealed limited ACE exposure was 6.01 times (95% CI: 1.26-28.61; p = 0.024) more likely to be protective against NDDs compared to those exposed to multiple ACEs. Moreover, valuing cultural identity (aOR = 2.81; 95% CI: 1.06-7.39; p = 0.038) and girls (aOR = 13.88; 95% CI: 3.06-62.84; p = 0.001) were protective against NDDs compared to their respective counterparts. Our findings highlight the need to prevent ACE exposure and promote Indigenous cultural identity in preventing negative health outcomes and the exacerbation of health inequities to strengthen the SEWB of Indigenous communities.

Abstract
Introduction Children of whose mothers exposed to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are at increased risk for developmental problems. This study aims to investigate the relationship between types and patterns of maternal ACEs and preschool children's emotional and behavioral problems (EBPs) in China, and to explore gender differences associated with these problems. Methods In this cross-sectional study, we selected 9,647 children from 36 preschools in three cities of Anhui province, China. Questionnaires were used to report the details of maternal ACEs and children's EBPs. We used the latent class analysis (LCA) to identify "patterns" in the types of maternal ACEs. Binomial logistic regressions was performed to examine the relationship between types and patterns of maternal ACEs and preschoolers' EBPs. Results Latent class analysis (LCA) revealed four different classes of maternal ACEs. Logistic regression analysis showed that compared with the low ACEs class, children of mothers in the high abuse and neglect class had the highest risk of developing EBPs (OR = 5.93, 95%CI: 4.70-7.49), followed by moderate ACEs class (OR = 2.44, 95%CI: 1.98-3.00), and high household dysfunction class (OR = 2.16, 95%CI: 1.19-3.90). We found gender differences in the effects of high abuse and neglect/moderate ACEs class and maternal childhood physical abuse/neglect on children's EBPs, which had a stronger impact on EBPs in boys than girls (P<0.05). Discussion This study supports and refines existing research that confirms an intergenerational association between types and patterns of maternal ACEs and children's EBPs in a large Chinese sample, so as to provide references for the early prevention and control of children's EBPs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Research suggests that maternal ACEs have intergenerational consequences for offspring mental health. However, very few studies have investigated moderators of this association. OBJECTIVES The objective of this longitudinal study was to examine whether child resilience factors moderated the association between maternal ACEs prior to age 18, and child-reported symptoms of anxiety, depression, hyperactivity, and inattention. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING The current study used data from 910 mother-child dyads. Participants were recruited in pregnancy from 2008 to 2010 as part of a longitudinal cohort study. METHODS Mothers had previously completed an ACEs questionnaire and reported on their child's resilience factors at child age 8-years. Children completed questionnaires about their mental health problems (symptoms of anxiety, depression, hyperactivity, and attention problems) at ages 10 and 10.5 years. Four moderation models were performed in total. RESULTS Results revealed that maternal ACEs predicted child-reported symptoms of anxiety (β = 0.174, p = .02) and depression (β = 0.37, p = .004). However, both these associations were moderated by higher levels of perceived child resilience factors (β = -0.29, p = .02, β = -0.33, p = .008, respectively). Specifically, there was no association between maternal ACEs and child mental health problems in the context of moderate and high levels of child resilience factors. CONCLUSIONS Children who have the ability to solicit support from internal and external sources (e.g., being creative, setting realistic goals, making friends easily) may be buffered against the consequences of maternal ACEs on anxiety and depression. Thus, the effects of maternal ACEs on child mental health problems are not deterministic.

Abstract
Parenting and family environment have significant impact on child development, including development of executive function, attention, and self-regulation, and may affect the risk of developmental disorders including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This paper examines the relationship of parenting and family environment factors with ADHD. A systematic review of the literature was conducted in 2014 and identified 52 longitudinal studies. A follow-up search in 2021 identified 7 additional articles, for a total of 59 studies that examined the association of parenting factors with ADHD outcomes: ADHD overall (diagnosis or symptoms), ADHD diagnosis specifically, or presence of the specific ADHD symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity. For parenting factors that were present in three or more studies, pooled effect sizes were calculated separately for dichotomous or continuous ADHD outcomes, accounting for each study's conditional variance. Factors with sufficient information for analysis were parenting interaction quality (sensitivity/warmth, intrusiveness/reactivity, and negativity/harsh discipline), maltreatment (general maltreatment and physical abuse), parental relationship status (divorce, single parenting), parental incarceration, and child media exposure. All factors showed a significant direct association with ADHD outcomes, except sensitivity/warmth which had an inverse association. Parenting factors predicted diagnosis and overall symptoms as well as inattentive and hyperactive symptoms when measured, but multiple factors showed significant heterogeneity across studies. These findings support the possibility that parenting and family environment influences ADHD symptoms and may affect a child's likelihood of being diagnosed with ADHD. Prevention strategies that support parents, such as decreasing parenting challenges and increasing access to parent training in behavior management, may improve children's long-term developmental health.

Abstract
Separate literatures have demonstrated that mothers' experiences with trauma during childhood or pregnancy are associated with maternal prenatal health risks, adverse childbirth outcomes, and offspring internalizing and externalizing disorders. These literatures largely align with the intergenerational transmission or fetal programming frameworks, respectively. However, few studies have tested the effects of maternal childhood and prenatal trauma simultaneously on mothers' and infants' health outcomes, and no studies have examined these effects on newborn neurobehavioral outcomes. Thus, in the present study, we examined how the developmental timing of pregnant women's traumatic life experiences associated with their physical health and psychopathology (Aim 1) as well as their newborns' birth and neurodevelopmental outcomes (Aim 2; for pre-registered aims and hypotheses, see https://osf.io/ygnre/?view_only=cbe17d0ac7f24af5a4d3e37e24eebead). One hundred and fifty-two 3rd trimester pregnant women (Mage = 29 years; 17.1% Hispanic/Latina) completed measures of trauma history and psychopathology. Then, 24-48 h after birth, trained clinicians conducted newborn neurobehavioral exams (n = 118 newborns; 52.6% female). Results indicated that lifetime traumatic experiences associated with multiple prenatal maternal health outcomes, including depression, anxiety, emotion dysregulation, and pregnancy complications. Pregnant women's experiences with childhood trauma, but not adulthood or prenatal trauma, predicted higher neurobehavioral attention scores among female newborns. Our discussion highlights the importance of considering the developmental timing of maternal trauma on perinatal outcomes and contextualizes our findings within the intergenerational transmission and fetal programming literatures. Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood maltreatment is associated with adverse health outcomes and this risk can be transmitted to the next generation. We aimed to investigate the association between exposure to maternal childhood maltreatment and common childhood physical and mental health problems, neurodevelopmental disorders, and related comorbidity patterns in offspring. METHODS We conducted a retrospective cohort study using data from the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program, which was launched to investigate the influence of early life exposures on child health and development in 69 cohorts across the USA. Eligible mother-child dyads were those with available data on maternal childhood maltreatment exposure and at least one child health outcome measure (autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder [ADHD], internalising problems, obesity, allergy, and asthma diagnoses). Maternal history of childhood maltreatment was obtained retrospectively from the Adverse Childhood Experiences or Life Stressor Checklist questionnaires. We derived the prevalence of the specified child health outcome measures in offspring across childhood and adolescence by harmonising caregiver reports and other relevant sources (such as medical records) across cohorts. Child internalising symptoms were assessed using the Child Behavior Checklist. Associations between maternal childhood maltreatment and childhood health outcomes were measured using a series of mixed-effects logistic regression models. Covariates included child sex (male or female), race, and ethnicity; maternal and paternal age; maternal education; combined annual household income; maternal diagnosis of depression, asthma, ADHD, allergy, or autism spectrum disorder; and maternal obesity. Two latent class analyses were conducted: to characterise patterns of comorbidity of child health outcomes; and to characterise patterns of co-occurrence of childhood maltreatment subtypes. We then investigated the association between latent class membership and maternal childhood maltreatment and child health outcomes, respectively. FINDINGS Our sample included 4337 mother-child dyads from 21 longitudinal cohorts (with data collection initiated between 1999 and 2016). Of 3954 mothers in the study, 1742 (44%) had experienced exposure to abuse or neglect during their childhood. After adjustment for confounding, mothers who experienced childhood maltreatment were more likely to have children with internalising problems in the clinical range (odds ratio [OR] 2·70 [95% CI 1·95-3·72], p<0·0001), autism spectrum disorder (1·70 [1·13-2·55], p=0·01), ADHD (2·09 [1·63-2·67], p<0·0001), and asthma (1·54 [1·34-1·77], p<0·0001). In female offspring, maternal childhood maltreatment was associated with a higher prevalence of obesity (1·69 [1·17-2·44], p=0·005). Children of mothers exposed to childhood maltreatment were more likely to exhibit a diagnostic pattern characterised by higher risk for multimorbidity. Exposure to multiple forms of maltreatment across all subtypes of maternal childhood maltreatment was associated with the highest risk increases for most offspring health outcomes, suggesting a dose-response relationship. INTERPRETATION Our findings suggest that maternal childhood maltreatment experiences can be a risk factor for disease susceptibility in offspring across a variety of outcomes and emphasise the need for policies focusing on breaking the intergenerational transmission of adversity. Abstract
We examined whether genetic risk for mental illness is associated with known perinatal risk factors for offspring mental illness to determine whether gene-environmental correlation might account for the associations of perinatal factors with mental illness. Among 8983 women with 19,733 pregnancies, we found that genetic risk for mental illness was associated with any smoking during pregnancy [attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and overall genetic risk], breast-feeding for less than 1 month (ADHD, depression, and overall genetic risk), experience of intimate partner violence in the year before the birth (depression and overall genetic risk), and pregestational overweight or obesity (bipolar disorder). These results indicate that genetic risk may partly account for the association between perinatal conditions and mental illness in offspring.

Intergenerational continuity of parent-child separation among mother-offspring dyads: Implication for child cognitive development in rural China. Soc Sci Med 2022; 315:115538. Abstract
The labor migration in China often leads to parent-child separation. Research to date has primarily focused on understanding mental and cognitive outcomes for children exposed to parent-child separation, with little consideration for the cumulative effects of intergenerational continuity of parent-child separation. A total of 2729 children between the ages of 4 and 6, along with one parent (primarily mothers, 86.2%) and/or one primary caregiver (if the child is separated from both parents), were recruited in the rural area of Anhui Province, China. A unique subsample of children (n = 249) with persistent experience of parent-child separation or whose mother reported being left behind by her parents during early childhood were enrolled for cognitive assessment. A total of 239 age-, gender- and residence-matched children without any parent-child separation experience were selected as the control group. Child cognitive performance was examined with the Chinese version of the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence, Fourth edition (WPPSI-IV). The association between intergenerational continuity of parent-child separation and child cognition was described using multivariate OLS regression models. Compared to mother-offspring dyads without any history of parent-child separation, girls (n = 236/450, 52.4%) who experienced the intergenerational continuity of parent-child separation showed a significant decrease of 5.73 points (95% CI: -9.83, -1.62; p = 0.006) on full-scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ) and a decrease of 5.71 points (95% CI: -9.80, 1.63; p = 0.006) on verbal comprehension index. No similar result was observed in boys. The cumulative effects of parent-child separation among mother-offspring dyads on child cognitive development highlight the need for effective early intervention to break the intergenerational cycle of disadvantage. Sex differences and possible epigenetic mechanisms underlying the intergenerational effects of parent-child separation warrant further investigation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Social determinants of health and adverse childhood experiences have been implicated as driving causes of maternal mortality but the empirical evidence to substantiate those relationships is lacking. We aimed to understand the prevalence and intersection of social determinants of health and adverse childhood experiences among maternal deaths in Colorado based on a review of records obtained for our state's maternal mortality review committee. METHODS A 5-member interdisciplinary team adapted the Protocol for Responding to and Assessing Patients' Assets, Risk, and Experiences and the Adverse Childhood Experiences tools to create a data collection tool. The team reviewed records collected for the purpose of maternal mortality review for pregnancy-associated deaths that occurred in Colorado between 2014 and 2016 (N = 94). RESULTS The review identified an overwhelming lack of information regarding social determinants of health or adverse childhood experiences in the records used to review maternal deaths. The most common finding of the social determinants of health was a lack of conclusive evidence in the record (35.1-94.7%). Similarly, the reviewers were unable to make a determination from the available records for 92.1% of adverse childhood experience indicators. DISCUSSION The lack of social and contextual information in the records points to challenges of relying on medical records for identification of non-medical causes of maternal mortality. Maternal mortality review committees would be well served to invest in alternative data sources, such as community dashboards and informant interviews, to inform a more comprehensive understanding of causes of maternal mortality.

Abstract
Maternal adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) may negatively affect the mental health and development of their offspring. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of maternal ACE and offspring's psychiatric disorder and the mediating effect of maternal depression. The subjects included 463 mothers (42.78 ± 5.68 years) and their offspring aged 6-18 years (13.26 ± 3.90 years). Mothers reported their ACE before age 18 and completed the Beck Depression Inventory-II and Diagnostic Predictive Scales (DPS), a screening tool for offspring's psychiatric disorder. 35.42% of subjects had at least one ACE, and 11.0% reported three or more ACEs. Higher maternal ACE scores were associated with a significantly higher prevalence of offspring's psychiatric disorders (p < 0.001). Household dysfunction of maternal ACE (OR = 2.263, p < 0.001) is significantly associated with offspring's psychiatric disorder. In the mediation model in which the household dysfunction affects the number of offspring's psychiatric disorders, the partial mediation model through maternal depression was significant. The mother's experience of household dysfunction before the age of 18 has a significant impact on her offspring's psychiatric disorder and supported significant mediation through maternal depression. Further research is needed to determine the mechanisms of intergenerational transmission of ACE and offspring's psychopathology.

Abstract
Maternal experiences of childhood adversity can increase the risk of emotional and behavioural problems in their children. This systematic review and meta-analysis provide the first narrative and quantitative synthesis of the mediators and moderators involved in the link between maternal childhood adversity and children's emotional and behavioural development. We searched EMBASE, PsycINFO, Medline, Cochrane Library, grey literature and reference lists. Studies published up to February 2021 were included if they explored mediators or moderators between maternal childhood adversity and their children's emotional and behavioural development. Data were synthesised narratively and quantitatively by meta-analytic approaches. The search yielded 781 articles, with 74 full-text articles reviewed, and 41 studies meeting inclusion criteria. Maternal mental health was a significant individual-level mediator, while child traumatic experiences and insecure maternal-child attachment were consistent family-level mediators. However, the evidence for community-level mediators was limited. A meta-analysis of nine single-mediating analyses from five studies indicated three mediating pathways: maternal depression, negative parenting practices and maternal insecure attachment, with pooled indirect standardised effects of 0.10 [95% CI (0.03-0.17)), 0.01 (95% CI (-0.02 to 0.04)] and 0.07 [95% CI (0.01-0.12)], respectively. Research studies on moderators were few and identified some individual-level factors, such as child sex (e.g. the mediating role of parenting practices being only significant in girls), biological factors (e.g. maternal cortisol level) and genetic factors (e.g. child's serotonin-transporter genotype). In conclusion, maternal depression and maternal insecure attachment are two established mediating pathways that can explain the link between maternal childhood adversity and their children's emotional and behavioural development and offer opportunities for intervention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To synthesize research on interpersonal trauma and women's health from the Nurses' Health Study II (NHS II) and to analyze conceptualization of interpersonal trauma across studies. DATA SOURCES A literature review was conducted in PubMed using a systematic search strategy. STUDY SELECTION Articles were included in the review if they used data from the NHS II and involved investigations of interpersonal trauma. Theoretical articles, methodologic articles, and other literature reviews involving the NHS II were excluded. Initially, the search returned 61 articles. After exclusions, 45 articles met the criteria for inclusion in the review and data extraction. DATA EXTRACTION Information was extracted and consolidated in an evidence table. Data included study time frame, sample, definition of trauma, outcomes studied, and journal of publication. DATA SYNTHESIS Trauma was not operationalized consistently across studies, even though the NHS II assessed trauma experiences in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Most investigations focused on childhood abuse, with investigations of childhood sexual abuse overrepresented in comparison to other abuse experiences. Authors conducting studies of trauma at any time in the life course consistently found a negative association with physical and mental health outcomes, which were increased by the presence of posttraumatic stress symptoms. Results from a small number of studies suggested a negative intergenerational impact of trauma on the children of women in the NHS II. CONCLUSION Interpersonal trauma across the life course was strongly associated with many leading causes of morbidity and mortality among female nurses. Trauma conceptualization and operationalization varied across studies, and future investigations should leverage the full range of trauma measures available in the NHS II data set.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diethylstilbestrol (DES) is an endocrine-disrupting pharmaceutical prescribed to pregnant women to prevent pregnancy complications between the 1940s and 1970s. Although DES has been shown in animal studies to have multigenerational effects, only two studies have investigated potential multigenerational effects in humans on preterm birth (PTB), and none on low birthweight (LBW)-major determinants of later life health. METHODS Nurses' Health Study (NHS) II participants (G1; born 1946-64) reported their mothers' (G0) use of DES while pregnant with them. We used cluster-weighted generalized estimating equations to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for risk of LBW and PTB among the grandchildren by grandmother use of DES. G1 birthweight and gestational age were considered to explore confounding by indication. RESULTS Among 54 334 G0-G1/grandmother-mother pairs, 973 (1.8%) G0 used DES during pregnancy with G1. Of the 128 275 G2 children, 4369 (3.4%) were LBW and 7976 (6.2%) premature. Grandmother (G0) use of DES during pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of G2 LBW [adjusted OR (aOR) = 3.09; 95% CI: 2.57, 3.72], that was reduced when restricted to term births (aOR = 1.59; 95% CI: 1.08, 2.36). The aOR for PTB was 2.88 (95% CI: 2.46, 3.37). Results were essentially unchanged when G1 birthweight and gestational age were included in the model, as well as after adjusting for other potential intermediate variables, such as G2 pregnancy-related factors. CONCLUSIONS Grandmother use of DES during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of LBW, predominantly through an increased risk of PTB. Results when considering G1 birth outcomes suggest this does not result from confounding by indication.

Abstract
Maternal distress is repeatedly reported to have negative impacts on the cognitive development in children and is linked to neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g. attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorder). However, studies examining the associations between maternal distress and the development of attention in infancy are few. This study investigated the longitudinal relationships between maternal distress (depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and exposure to childhood trauma) and the development of focused attention in infancy in 118 mother-infant dyads. We found that maternal exposure to non-interpersonal traumatic events in childhood was associated with the less focused attention of the infants to audio-visual stimuli at 6, 10, and 18 months. In addition, exposure to interpersonal traumatic events in childhood was identified as a moderator of the negative effect of maternal anxiety during the 2nd trimester on the development of focused attention in infants. We discuss the possible mechanisms accounting for these cross-generational effects. Our findings underscore the importance of maternal mental health to the development of focused attention in infancy and address the need for early screening of maternal mental health during pregnancy.

Abstract
People who experience childhood abuse are at increased risk of mental illness. Twin studies suggest that inherited genetic risk for mental illness may account for some of these associations. Yet, the hypothesis that individuals who have experienced childhood abuse may carry genetic loading for mental illness has never been tested with genetic data. Using polygenic risk scores for six psychiatric disorders-attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), bipolar disorder (BPD), major depressive disorder (MDD), neuroticism, and schizophrenia-we tested whether genetic risk for mental illness was associated with increased risk of experiencing three types of childhood abuse: physical/emotional abuse, physical assault, and sexual abuse, in a cohort of white non-Hispanic women (n = 11,315). ADHD and MDD genetic risk scores were associated with a higher risk of experiencing each type of childhood abuse, while neuroticism, schizophrenia, BPD, and ASD genetic scores were associated with a higher risk of experiencing physical/emotional abuse and physical assault, but not sexual abuse. Sensitivity analyses examining potential bias from the differential recall of childhood trauma, parental socioeconomic status, and population stratification were consistent with the main findings. A one-standard-deviation increase in genetic risk for mental illness was associated with a modestly elevated risk of experiencing childhood abuse (OR range: 1.05-1.19). Therefore, inherited genetic risk may partly account for the association of childhood abuse with mental illness. In addition, future treatments for mental illness will benefit from taking into consideration the co-occurrence of childhood trauma and genetic loading.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While previous studies have suggested that maternal anxiety and depressive symptoms are associated with increased risk of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in their offspring in early and late childhood, studies exploring the risk in late adolescence are however lacking. This study aims to examine the association between maternal anxiety and depressive symptoms and the risk of ADHD symptoms in late adolescence (at age 17). METHODS We used data from the Raine Study. Maternal depressive and anxiety symptoms were measured when the child was 10 years of age using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS). Offspring ADHD symptoms at age 17 were assessed using the DSM-oriented scales of the child behavior checklist (CBCL). Log-binomial regression was used to explore the associations. RESULTS We found an increased risk of ADHD symptoms in offspring of mothers with comorbid anxiety and depressive symptoms when compared with offspring of mothers with no symptoms [RR 5.60 (95%CI 3.02-10.37)]. There was a nearly three-fold increase in the risk of ADHD symptoms in offspring of mothers with increased anxiety symptoms compared with offspring of mothers who were in the normal range [RR 2.84 (95%CI 1.18-6.83)]. No association was observed with maternal depressive symptoms. CONCLUSION This study found an increased risk of ADHD symptoms in the offspring of mothers with anxiety as well as comorbid anxiety and depressive symptoms but not among the offspring of mothers with depressive symptoms. Early screening and intervention for ADHD symptoms in offspring with maternal anxiety and comorbid anxiety and depressive symptoms are warranted.

Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to examine the effect of maternal adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on the attention-deficit/hyper-activity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in the offspring and to examine the mediating role of antepartum health risk on the intergenera-tional transmission of maternal ACEs. Methods The participants consisted of 461 mother-child dyads. Mothers completed the ACEs questionnaire and Diagnostic Predictive Scales. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the risk of ADHD symptoms in the offspring of mothers with ACEs and the mediating effect of antepartum health risks by path analysis. Results In all, 35.4% (n=163) had at least one maternal ACE, and 11.1% (n=51) had three or more. Compared to the non-ADHD symp-tom group, the group of offspring with ADHD symptoms showed a significant association with maternal ACE score (p<0.001) and an-tepartum health risks (p<0.001). Multivariate analysis further showed a significant association between the sum of maternal ACEs [odds ratio (OR)=1.264, 95% confidence interval (CI)= 1.060–1.516, p=0.009], antepartum health risks (OR=1.236, 95% CI=1.036–1.475, p= 0.019), and ADHD symptoms in the offspring. In the mediation model in which the mother’s ACE score affected the offspring’s ADHD symptoms, partial mediation through antepartum health risks was found to be significant (B=0.041, 95% CI=0.011–0.124). Conclusion Maternal ACEs are significantly related to the incidence of ADHD symptoms in the offspring and antepartum health risks exert an indirect effect. These findings suggest that maternal ACEs have a negative impact on the offspring’s brain development through intergenerational transmission, resulting in neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD.

Abstract
Childhood maltreatment (CM) comprises experiences of abuse and neglect during childhood. CM causes psychological as well as biological alterations in affected individuals. In humans, it is hardly explored whether these CM consequences can be transmitted directly on a biological level to the next generation. Here, we investigated the associations between maternal CM and mitochondrial bioenergetics (mitochondrial respiration and intracellular mitochondrial density) in immune cells of mothers and compared them with those of their newborns. In n = 102 healthy mother-newborn dyads, maternal peripheral blood mononuclear cells and neonatal umbilical cord blood mononuclear cells were collected and cryopreserved shortly after parturition to measure mitochondrial respiration and intracellular mitochondrial density with high-resolution respirometry and spectrophotometric analyses, respectively. Maternal CM was assessed with the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire Maternal and neonatal mitochondrial bioenergetics were quantitatively comparable and positively correlated. Female newborns showed higher mitochondrial respiration compared to male newborns. Maternal CM load was significantly and positively associated with mitochondrial respiration and density in mothers, but not with mitochondrial respiration in newborns. Although maternal and neonatal mitochondrial bioenergetics were positively correlated, maternal CM only had a small effect on mitochondrial density in newborns, which was not significant in this study after adjustment for multiple comparisons. The biological relevance of our finding and its consequences for child development need further investigation in future larger studies. This study reports data on mitochondrial bioenergetics of healthy mother-newborn dyads with varying degrees of CM.

Abstract
Frequent maternal use of acetaminophen in pregnancy has been linked to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children, but concerns regarding uncontrolled confounding remain. In this article, we illustrate use of the negative control exposure (NCE) approach to evaluate uncontrolled confounding bias in observational studies on pregnancy drug safety and explain the causal assumptions behind the method. We conducted an NCE analysis and evaluated the associations between maternal acetaminophen use during different exposure periods and ADHD among 8,856 children born in 1993-2005 to women enrolled in the Nurses' Health Study II cohort. Information on regular maternal acetaminophen use was collected prospectively in biennial questionnaires. A total of 721 children (8.1%) in the cohort had been diagnosed with ADHD as reported by the mothers. Our NCE analysis suggested that only acetaminophen use at the time of pregnancy was associated with childhood ADHD (odds ratio = 1.34, 95% confidence interval: 1.05, 1.72), and the effect estimates for the 2 NCE periods (about 4 years before and 4 years after the pregnancy) were null. Our findings corroborate those of prior reports suggesting that prenatal acetaminophen exposure may influence neurodevelopment. The lack of an association between acetaminophen use in the pre- and postpregnancy exposure periods and ADHD provides assurance that uncontrolled time-invariant factors do not explain this association.

Abstract
Stress, and the chronic overactivation of major stress hormones, is associated with several neuropsychiatric disorders. However, clinical literature on the exact role of stress either as a causative, triggering, or modulatory factor to mental illness remains unclear. We suggest that the impact of stress on the brain and behavior is heavily dependent on the developmental timing at which the stress has occurred, and as such, this may contribute to the overall variability reported on the association of stress and mental illness. Here, animal models provide a way to comprehensively assess the temporal impact of stress on behavior in a controlled manner. This review particularly focuses on the long-term impact of stress on behavior in various rodent stress models at three major developmental time points: early life, adolescence, and adulthood. We characterize the various stressor paradigms into physical, social, and pharmacological, and discuss commonalities and differences observed across these various stress-inducing methods. In addition, we discuss here how sex can influence the impact of stress at various developmental time points. We conclude here that early postnatal life and adolescence represent particular periods of vulnerability, but that stress exposure during early life can sometimes lead to resilience, particularly to fear-potentiated memories. In the adult brain, while shorter periods of stress tended to enhance spatial memory, longer periods caused impairments. Overall, males tended to be more vulnerable to the long-term effects of early life and adolescent stress, albeit very few studies incorporate both sexes, and further well-powered sex comparisons are needed.
