Abstract
The effects of salt reduction and adequate nutrition intake among older adults with physical frailty remain controversial. Therefore, the present study investigated whether the association between daily salt intake and blood pressure among community-dwelling older adults, including the very old people, based on their physical frailty status. This cross-sectional study used data from the SONIC study, a cohort study on older adults, collected between 2010 and 2012. Daily salt intake was estimated from the brief self-administered diet history questionnaire. Participants were stratified by groups based on the use of antihypertensive medication and their physical frailty status. There were 1975 participants with an average age of 76.5 ± 6.5 years and 53.1% were female. No association was observed between daily salt intake and blood pressure among participants with physical frailty regardless of the use of antihypertensive medication. In contrast, an association was noted between daily salt intake and systolic blood pressure among the robust without antihypertensive medication group (β = 0.08, p = 0.038), and the odds ratios for systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg were significantly higher in the third and fourth quartiles of daily salt intake than in the first quartile (odds ratios = 1.78 and 1.71, respectively). The present results suggest that the physical frailty status needs to be considered when providing salt reduction guidance to older adults for blood pressure control, in order to prevent progression of frailty and maintain quality of life. Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the lives of people across ages, with older adults identified as a vulnerable group. This vulnerability has been magnified by circumstantial indications of ageism emerging at different levels. Crucial at this point is the practice of healthy lifestyle behaviors to maintain functional independence and to improve the quality of life of these susceptible individuals. This study generally aims to comprehensively evaluate the quality of life among Ilocano older adults amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, exploring the relationship between their health-promoting behaviors and quality of life, while considering the moderating influence of socio-demographic factors. A total of 383 community-dwelling older adults from Ilocos Norte aged 60-93 y/o (M 69.68, SD = 7.13) without cognitive impairment, and who can verbally communicate were recruited through stratified random sampling from February to March 2022. Data measures used were the Ilocano translated socio-demographic questionnaire, the Health-Promoting Lifestyle II(HPLP) for HPB, and the World Health Organization Quality of Life -BREF for QOL. The translation process followed the WHO protocol. Reliability and validity testing were done and established. A Mini-Cog test was administered to validate subject inclusion. Data were obtained face-to-face with full observance of health and safety protocol. The Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) v.28.0 was used for the descriptive and inferential analysis of study data. Diagnostic testing like outlier screening and distribution checking were conducted prior to data analysis. Tests of normality were conducted prior to the regression analysis. Ilocano older adults (IOA) generally have a high level of HPBs (M = 2.91, SD 0.49) and average perception of QOL (M = 3.37, SD = 0.46) regardless of their demographic profile. However, the physical activity subscale was reported to be low. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) with the Scheffe post hoc test revealed statistically significant differences in the HPB scores of the IOA according to age, civil status, and educational attainment and a significant difference in the perceived QOL of the IOA when classified according to their health status. Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a lack of evidence to support the hypothesis that malnutrition may promote cognitive decline. This study aimed to explore the available literature on this topic. METHODS A systematic review was undertaken of studies investigating the effect of nutritional status on cognitive function in adults of any age, using Medline, Embase, PsycINFO and Global Health via OvidSP from earliest available dates to January 2024. Studies were excluded if they were conducted in animal or paediatric populations, or if they did not include measurements of baseline nutritional status or follow-up assessment of cognitive function. Selected studies were assessed for quality, and data extracted. A meta-analysis was not conducted due to the heterogeneity of the data. RESULTS A total of nine studies (three randomised and six observational) was retrieved, including total 8697 subjects who were all in older age groups. Study quality was generally poor. Seven of the nine studies supported the hypothesis that baseline nutritional status is predictive of change in cognitive function at later assessment, but all studies failed to control for significant confounders and six of the nine had large amounts of missing data at follow-up, so that it remains unclear whether nutrition is independently associated with later cognitive function. CONCLUSION Malnutrition may be associated with subsequent development of cognitive dysfunction in older adults. Higher quality studies in a wider range of age groups are needed to investigate whether nutritional status has an independent impact on cognitive function, and whether this is related to specific nutrient deficiencies.

Abstract
To date, the primary and only treatment recommended for effective management of celiac disease (CD) is adherence to a strict gluten-free diet (GFD) which entails a new approach to eating that affects the social quality of life (QoL) and physical activity (PA) of patients. This cross-sectional study aimed at assessing the social QoL and PA of adult Lebanese CD patients aged between 18 and 59 years old who are following a GFD. An online CD questionnaire was administered to 136 Lebanese celiac participants on a GFD. The findings of this study show a significant association between celiac patients following a GFD and their social QoL (P-value = 0.0001). The results also showed a significant association between the same population and their PA (p-value = 0.0001). Further awareness-raising and learning activities about gluten-free products are needed to improve the adherence to a strict GFD to facilitate its availability to the Lebanese population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nutrition care can positively affect multiple aspects of patient's health; outcomes are commonly evaluated on the basis of their impact on a patient's (i) illness-specific conditions and (ii) health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Our systematic review examined how HRQoL was measured in studies of nutritional interventions. To help future researchers select appropriate Quality of Life Questionnaires (QoLQ), we identified commonly-used instruments and their uses across populations in different regions, of different ages, and with different diseases. METHODS We searched EMCare, EMBASE, and Medline databases for studies that had HRQoL and nutrition intervention terms in the title, the abstract, or the MeSH term classifications "quality of life" and any of "nutrition therapy", "diet therapy", or "dietary supplements" and identified 1,113 studies for possible inclusion.We then reviewed titles, abstracts, and full texts to identify studies for final inclusion. RESULTS Our review of titles, abstracts, and full texts resulted in the inclusion of 116 relevant studies in our final analysis. Our review identified 14 general and 25 disease-specific QoLQ. The most-used general QoLQ were the Short-Form 36-Item Health Survey (SF-36) in 27 studies and EuroQol 5-Dimension, (EQ-5D) in 26 studies. The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of life Questionnaire (EORTC-QLQ), a cancer-specific QoLQ, was the most frequently used disease-specific QoLQ (28 studies). Disease-specific QoLQ were also identified for nutrition-related diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and dysphagia. Sixteen studies used multiple QoLQ, of which eight studies included both general and disease-specific measures of HRQoL. The most studied diseases were cancer (36 studies) and malnutrition (24 studies). There were few studies focused on specific age-group populations, with only 38 studies (33%) focused on adults 65 years and older and only 4 studies focused on pediatric patients. Regional variation in QoLQ use was observed, with EQ-5D used more frequently in Europe and SF-36 more commonly used in North America. CONCLUSIONS Use of QoLQ to measure HRQoL is well established in the literature; both general and disease-specific instruments are now available for use. We advise further studies to examine potential benefits of using both general and disease-specific QoLQ to better understand the impact of nutritional interventions on HRQoL.

Abstract
Objectives In response to the lack of digital support for older people to plan their lives for quality of life, research was undertaken to co-design and then evaluate a new digital tool that combined interactive guidance for life planning with a computerised model of quality of life. Method First, a workshop-based process for co-designing the SCAMPI tool with older people is reported. A first version of this tool was then evaluated over eight consecutive weeks by nine older people living in their own homes. Four of these people were living with Parkinson's disease, one with early-stage dementia, and four without any diagnosed chronic condition. Regular semi-structured interviews were undertaken with each individual older person and, where wanted, their life partner. A more in-depth exit interview was conducted at the end of the period of tool use. Themes arising from analyses of content from these interviews were combined with first-hand data collected from the tool's use to develop a description of how each older person used the tool over the 8 weeks. Results The findings provided the first evidence that the co-designed tool, and in particular the computerised model, could offer some value to older people. Although some struggled to use the tool as it was designed, which led to limited uptake of the tool's suggestions, the older people reported factoring these suggestions into their longer-term planning, as health and/or circumstances might change. Conclusions The article contributes to the evolving discussion about how to deploy such digital technologies to support quality of life more effectively.

Abstract
While food and eating are important determinants of health, there is limited information on how they affect quality of life (QOL). This study aimed to understand (1) the factors that impact QOL, (2) the effect of food and eating on QOL, from the perspective of community-dwelling older adults. Twenty-five older adults completed semi-structured interviews. The constant comparative method was used to assign codes to participant's responses and organize them into categories, which were used to form a conceptual framework. Five main themes emerged showing factors affecting QOL: health and vitality; independence; mental and emotional well-being; socialization and support; and activities. Four themes were identified demonstrating how food and eating affect QOL: food access and choice; food preparation; health and vitality; and food enjoyment. Relationships between themes suggest food and eating have a broad effect on factors impacting QOL. To develop and tailor community interventions to improve older adults' QOL, measurement tools should include these effects.

Abstract
The need for improved nutrition in older adults requiring care has been acknowledged, but, to the best of our knowledge, there is a lack of systematic review and integration of nutritional care studies with older adults in nursing homes. This scoping review aimed to examine the scope and nature of nutritional care research for older adults in nursing homes and to identify research gaps, following the guidelines of the Joanna Briggs Institute. We found varied nutritional care for older adults living in nursing homes, including individualized sessions, such as nutrition counseling, the addition of foods and preparations for increased nutritional intake, and the maintenance of an eating environment, such as feeding assistance and calling. The nutritional care identified in this scoping review also included studies that have improved the nutritional status of older adults in nursing homes by implementing educational programs for care staff. For future research on effective nutritional care for older adults in nursing homes, we suggest evaluating both short- and long-term intervention effects with an adequate sample size.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Healthy eating behaviors may be related to mental health and health-related quality of life. This study investigates the associations between diet quality, mental health, and health-related quality of life among men and women in Korea. METHODS A total of 6823 participants, aged 19, from the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2016 to 2018 were included. Their overall diet quality was estimated using the Korean Healthy Eating Index (KHEI). Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify the associations between diet quality, mental health, and quality of life. RESULTS The prevalence of stress perception and depression was highest in the lowest tertile of the KHEI score and higher for women than men. Among men, a significant association was observed only for stress perception and depressive symptoms in the second tertile, with odds ratios of 0.745 (95% CI, 0.585-0.949) and 0.519 (95% CI, 0.275-0.980). In contrast, the multivariate-adjusted odds ratios for stress perception, depressive symptoms, and low EQ-5D index among women in the highest tertile were 0.668 (95% CI, 0.541-0.823), 0.464 (95% CI, 0.288-0.746), and 0.722 (95% CI, 0.566-0.920), and significant dose-response associations were observed. CONCLUSIONS A higher-quality diet was associated with a lower risk of stress and depression and a better quality of life. Thus, healthy eating behaviors may improve mental health and quality of life.

Abstract
Food Frequency Questionnaires (FFQs) are important instruments to assess dietary intake in large epidemiological studies. To determine dietary intake correctly, food lists need to be adapted depending on the study aim and the target population. The present work compiles food lists for an FFQ with Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) to minimize the number of foods in the food list. The optimized food lists were compared with the validated eNutri FFQ. The constraints of the MILP aimed to identify food items with a high nutrient coverage in a population and with a high interindividual variability. The optimization was based on data from the second German National Nutrition Survey. The resulting food lists were shorter than the one used in the validated eNutri FFQ.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Hand grip strength (HGS) and osteoporosis are known to be closely related to the health condition of the elderly, respectively. Comprehensive studies including adults over middle age were insufficient. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between HGS with osteoporosis and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in adults aged >40 years. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional analysis included data from 13,966 people aged >40 years between 2015 to 2018 provided by the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The HGS was divided into strong and weak quartiles, defined as the highest and lowest quartiles, respectively. We used the European Quality of Life Scale-Five dimensions (EQ-5D) for HRQoL. We performed multiple logistic regression and post hoc analysis to confirm the relationship between the four groups and HRQoL. Results: Osteoporotic patients with weak HGS showed the lowest EQ-5D index (0.87 ± 0.01) among all groups and had a significantly impaired HRQoL in all EQ-5D dimensions, at least 1.75 times more than healthy individuals with strong HGS (0.95 ± 0.00). Osteoporotic patients with weak HGS showed, notably, 2.68 times more impaired mobility compared to healthy individuals with strong HGS among all five dimensions of the EQ-5D. In self-care, significant sex differences in impaired HRQoL were observed (males 6.03, 2.23-16.35; females 2.51, 1.70-3.71). Conclusions: Weak HGS and the presence of osteoporosis were associated with low HRQoL, respectively. Middle-aged and older adults with both weak HGS and osteoporosis showed poorer HRQoL compared to healthy middle-aged and older adults. This suggests that HGS is a possible factor for predicting poor HRQoL in adults aged >40 years with or without osteoporosis. It is necessary to assess the risk of low HRQoL by measuring HGS and confirming whether osteoporosis is accompanied in adults over middle age.

Abstract
Food insecurity is a key social determinant of health and nutrition. However, very few studies have examined the association of food insecurity and quality of life outcomes among older adults in low and middle-income settings. In this study, we examine the association of food insecurity with self-rated poor quality of life, low life satisfaction, and WHO quality of life (WHOQol). Nationally representative data from WHO's Study on global AGEing and adult health (SAGE) consisting of 20,026 older adults were analyzed. The association of food insecurity with self-rated poor quality of life and low life satisfaction was assessed using bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. Multivariate linear regression models examine the association between food insecurity and WHOQol score. Pooled data analysis of six countries showed older adults with severe food insecurity were two times more likely to report poor quality of life (OR = 2.49, CI 2.10, 2.96; p < 0.001) and low life satisfaction (OR = 2.36, CI 1.94, 2.87; p < 0.001), respectively. Similarly, older adults with severe food insecurity had 3.60 (CI-4.25, -2.95; p < 0.001) points lower WHO-QoL score than those who are food secure. These results show that the association of food insecurity is statistically significant with all three outcomes of quality of life in all six countries adjusting for sociodemographic and health measures. Public health and social security interventions are important to prevent food insecurity to promote overall wellbeing of the growing older population in low and middle-income countries.

Abstract
Introduction Globally, the number of older adults is growing exponentially. Yet, while living longer, people are not necessarily healthier. Nutrition can positively impact healthy aging and quality of life (QoL). Two decades ago, nutrition and diet were rarely viewed as key QoL domains, were not part of QoL screening, and QoL studies frequently used unvalidated tools. It is unclear how the nutrition and QoL research area may have since evolved. Methods A scoping review was conducted in Pubmed of research with community-living older adults (aged ≥65) from developed economies that included 1 of 29 common, valid QoL instruments, nutrition indices, and was published between 1/2000-12/2022. The review followed published methodology guidance and used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) flow diagram to document identified studies and record number of included/excluded studies (based on scoping review's pre-specified criteria). Results Of 258 studies identified initially, 37 fully met scoping review inclusion criteria; only 2 were QoL studies, 30 focused on nutrition, 3 on measurement tool validation/testing, and 2 were other study types. Most studies (n = 32) were among populations outside of North America; majority were conducted in Europe (n = 22) where the EuroQol 5 Dimension (Eq5D) was used in >1/2 the studies. Of 5 North American studies, the 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36) was most frequently used (n = 4). Myriad nutrition indices described various aspects of eating, dietary intake, and nutrition status, making comparability between studies difficult. Studies included several different nutrition questionnaires; Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) (n = 8) or Mini Nutritional Assessment Short Form (MNA-SF) (n = 5) were used most frequently. The most frequent anthropometric measure reported was Body Mass Index (BMI) (n = 28). Nutrition-related biochemical indices were reported infrequently (n = 8). Discussion The paucity of studies over the last two decades suggests research on nutrition and QoL among community-living older adults remains underdeveloped. Valid QoL instruments and nutrition indices are now available. To ensure greater comparability among studies it is important to develop consensus on core indices of QoL and particularly nutrition. Greater agreement on these indices will advance further research to support healthy aging and improve QoL for community-dwelling older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between functional capacity and the subsequent risk of nutritional deterioration is yet to be understood. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the relationship between functional capacity, comprising instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), intellectual activity, and social function, and future decline in nutritional status. METHODS The current study is a two-year prospective cohort study. A total of 468 community-dwelling older adults without nutritional risks were enrolled. We used the Mini Nutritional Assessment Screening Form. Functional capacity, including IADL, intellectual activity, and social function, was assessed using the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology Index of Competence at baseline. The nutritional status was reassessed at a 2-year follow-up. Risk ratios (RR) of functional capacity for the incidence of nutritional decline were estimated. RESULTS Low functional capacity was significantly associated with future deterioration of nutritional status (RR 1.12, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.02-1.25). Of the subdomains of functional capacity, IADL decline (adjusted RR 2.21, 95% CI 1.18-4.13) was an independent risk factor for the incidence of nutritional risk. Intellectual and social activities were not significant. CONCLUSION Decline in functional capacity, especially IADL, is a risk factor for future deterioration in nutritional status. Further studies are required to elucidate the effect of interventions for IADL decline on maintaining nutritional status in older adults.

Abstract
Introduction The progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and function that frequently occurs as people get older is referred to as sarcopenia. Elderly musculoskeletal aging, sarcopenia, and obesity are all intimately connected. Our study's aim is to investigate the prevalence of sarcopenia in a real cohort of patients over 65 with musculoskeletal conditions referring to a Rehabilitation Unit. The secondary aim of our study is to investigate associations between sarcopenia and alterations in nutritional status and Body Mass Index (BMI). Finally, quality of life and global health has been investigated in our population. Materials and methods From January 2019 to January 2021, 247 patients over 65 years old with musculoskeletal concerns were enrolled and participated in an observational study. As outcome measures, the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), the 12-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12), and the Cumulative Illness Rating Scale Severity Index (CIRS-SI) were used. Additionally, measurements of total skeletal muscle mass (SMM) and appendicular muscle mass (ASMM) using bioelectrical impedance analysis, as well as a hand grip strength test of the non-dominant hand were taken. The Mid Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) and the Calf Circumference (CC) were measured and recorded as further indications of possible sarcopenia. Results A percentage of 46.1% of subjects with overt sarcopenia was found and 10.1% showed a severe sarcopenia. Patients with severe sarcopenia showed significantly lower values of BMI and MNA. Additionally, sarcopenic patients showed significantly lower values in MNA when compared to non-sarcopenic patients. Considering SF-12, only the physical score revealed slight significant differences. In particular, patients affected by probable or severe sarcopenia presented a lower value than non-sarcopenic patients. Concerning MUAC and CC, severe sarcopenic patients showed significant lower values for both the body parts. Conclusion Our study considers a cohort of real-life elderly subjects with musculoskeletal concerns and shows that these subjects are highly susceptible to sarcopenia. Therefore, rehabilitation for elderly patients with musculoskeletal concerns requires to be customized and multidisciplinary. Future research should further investigate these aspects in order to enable the early identification of sarcopenia and the formulation of customized rehabilitative programs. .

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to assess the nutritional status and its associated factors among elderly people. DESIGN A community-based cross-sectional study. SETTING The study was conducted in urban and semiurban areas. PARTICIPANTS The study included 620 elderly community dwellers in Southwest Ethiopia from 3 October 2021 to 10 November 2021. Those who were seriously ill, could not get around or were on special diets were excluded from the study. OUTCOME MEASURE The Mini Nutritional Assessment was used to evaluate nutritional status and the STEPwise approach was used to collect data on backgrounds and lifestyle. SPSS V.22.0 was used for data analysis. Logistic regression was computed. The level of significance was set at 0.05. RESULTS Elderly people who were malnourished or at risk of malnutrition were found to make up 48.1% (44.1%) and 17.4% (14.5%) of the population, respectively. Those aged 80 years and older had a chance of being at risk of malnutrition (adjusted OR (AOR)=22.555; 95% CI: 7.963 to 63.881), while the odds of being malnourished were 11.5 times higher (AOR=11.755; 95% CI: 4.825 to 28.638). Informal education was a significant predictor of being at risk of malnutrition (AOR=6.102; 95% CI: 2.684 to 13.871). Urban dwellers were 8.9 times more likely to be malnourished. Inadequate financial resources make people 3.7 times more likely to be malnourished. A lower wealth index was a significant predictor of being at risk of malnutrition (AOR=4.156; 95% CI: 1.361 to 12.692). Single elderly people had a 3.4-fold higher risk of malnutrition. Elderly people with chronic pain, who were smokers and alcoholics, and who had depression were all at risk of nutritional problems. CONCLUSION The risk of malnutrition and malnourishment was high. Age, urbanisation, finances, education, economics, being a woman, smoking and alcohol are associated factors. Interventional studies are warranted to minimise malnutrition challenges in the study population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malnutrition is a serious health risk facing older people living in residential aged care facilities. Aged care staff record observations and concerns about older people in electronic health records (EHR), including free-text progress notes. These insights are yet to be unleashed. OBJECTIVE This study explored the risk factors for malnutrition in structured and unstructured electronic health data. METHODS Data of weight loss and malnutrition were extracted from the de-identified EHR records of a large aged care organization in Australia. A literature review was conducted to identify causative factors for malnutrition. Natural language processing (NLP) techniques were applied to progress notes to extract these causative factors. The NLP performance was evaluated by the parameters of sensitivity, specificity and F1-Score. RESULTS The NLP methods were highly accurate in extracting the key data, values for 46 causative variables, from the free-text client progress notes. Thirty three percent (1,469 out of 4,405) of the clients were malnourished. The structured, tabulated data only recorded 48% of these malnourished clients, far less than that (82%) identified from the progress notes, suggesting the importance of using NLP technology to uncover the information from nursing notes to fully understand the health status of the vulnerable older people in residential aged care. CONCLUSION This study identified 33% of older people suffered from malnutrition, lower than those reported in the similar setting in previous studies. Our study demonstrates that NLP technology is important for uncovering the key information about health risks for older people in residential aged care. Future research can apply NLP to predict other health risks for older people in this setting.

Abstract
African American men have the lowest life expectancy of any ethnic gender group in the USA. Furthermore, these men endorse having a lower health-related quality of life (HRQoL) than any other group. There have been recent calls from national organizations to improve HRQoL-a multidimensional indicator of health strongly associated with mortality and morbidity. Following these calls, there have been widespread efforts implemented to improve HRQoL among the US population, though no known effort has been implemented that is tailored to the unique experiences of African American men. Health promotion efforts that are not tailored to the unique preferences and experiences of these men are likely to produce limited results. Formative research conducted among African American men is needed in order to design and implement an effective HRQoL-promoting intervention for African American men. The present study constitutes such formative research and was conducted with a sample of 211 African American men. Hierarchical regressions were performed to understand the role of literature-derived predictors of HRQoL among these men. Results found that depression, stress, and physical activity were found to be significant predictors of HRQoL among these men. This is the first known study to examine predictors of HRQoL among African American men-a group that disproportionately experiences health disparities and low HRQoL, though for who few successful health promotions exist. The findings from this study have implications for those seeking to design and implement HRQoL-promoting interventions among African American men.

Abstract
Physical activity (PA) is a key element in the management of successful aging. The aim of this paper was to show the effects of PA on the quality of life perception, nutritional status, and daily life management of 178 older adults (aged 63.87 ± 8.17) randomly assigned to an Experimental Group (EG), which performed moderate-to-high intensity aerobic and strengthening training, and a Control Group (CG) which performed low-impact PA, assessed after 6, 12, and 24 months. The Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), and Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE) were used for the study. In the SF-36 assessment, EG showed a good quality of life perception maintained after 24 months, while CG showed a worsening in the same period (p = 0.018). The EG reported a significant better nutritional status as compared to pre-intervention assessment (p = 0.003) and to CG (p < 0.001). Regarding the PASE, the EG showed a higher level of weekly activities than the CG after 24 months (p = 0.011), while the CG showed a worsening after 12 months (p = 0.008). The prolonged engagement in moderate-to high-intensity PA allowed the maintenance of a good quality of life perception, a good level of nutritional status, and daily life activities.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Due to rapid urbanization, Covid-19 pandemic and increasing food prices, a higher rate of food insecurity has been observed in recent years in India. Thus, we aim to study the prevalence of food insecurity among older Indian adults and the association of food insecurity as a modifiable risk factor with late-life cognitive impairment. METHOD Data for this study were obtained from the recent release of the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (2017-18). The total sample size for the study was 31,464 older adults aged 60 years and above. Cognitive functioning was measured through five broad domains (memory, orientation, arithmetic function, executive function, and object naming) adapted from the cognitive module of the US Health and Retirement Study (HRS). Descriptive statistics along with cross-tabulation were presented in the study. Additionally, multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to fulfil the objectives of the study. RESULTS It was found that 7.7% of older adults in rural areas reduced their size of meals due to unavailability (urban, 3.2%), 41.2% of them did not eat enough food of their choice (urban, 38.3%), 6.9% were hungry but did not eat food (urban, 2.6%), 5.0% did not eat for whole day (urban, 2.2%), and 6.9% lost weight due to lack of food in their household (urban, 2.9%). It was found that older adults who did not have enough food of their choice had significantly higher odds [AOR: 1.24; CI: 1.14, 1.35] of suffering from cognitive impairment in reference to their counterparts. Similarly, the older adults who were hungry but did not eat were 30% [AOR: 1.30; CI: 1.02, 1.73] more likely to suffer from cognitive impairment in reference to their counterparts. Interaction model revealed that older adults who had food insecurity in rural areas had higher odds of cognitive impairment than older adults who had food insecurity in urban areas. CONCLUSION The findings of the study highlight that the food security status in older adults may bring about greater challenges due to their limited economic resources. Interventions focusing on food security may have unintended positive impacts on late-life mental wellbeing as the older age is associated with higher cognitive deficits.

Abstract
The effect of malnutrition beyond morbidity and mortality has become a critical area of investigation in older people with an increased focus on quality-of-life (QoL), but as yet the relationship between malnutrition and QoL remains to be reviewed in older people from aged care settings. The current study conducted a systematic review and meta-analyses of studies published between the years 1995 and 2020 examining the relationship between nutritional status and QoL or the effects of a nutrition-based intervention on QoL in older people in residential aged care. Based on searches of the databases MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Emcare, and Embase, 21 studies were identified. Meta-analyses of the cross-sectional and quasi-experimental studies revealed a significant positive relationship between nutritional status and QoL and that nutritional intervention significantly improved QoL. By contrast, meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials revealed a non-significant but improved trend post-intervention in QoL. Although the effect sizes were small, the present findings indicate that nutrition-based interventions improve QoL in older people in residential aged care and align with previous reviews based on findings from other aged settings. Future research is needed to determine causality and to better identify and control for confounding factors which may influence both nutritional status and QoL.

Abstract
Background: Following a prostate cancer (PC) diagnosis, treatment-related symptoms may
result in diminished quality of life (QoL). Improved diet and increased
exercise may improve QoL in men with PC. Methods: We conducted a 4-arm pilot randomized trial to assess feasibility and
acceptability of a 3-month web-based diet and exercise intervention, among
men (>18 years of age) with PC (reported elsewhere). The purpose of this
study is to describe the change in QoL measured by surveys (eg, QLQ-C30,
PROMIS Fatigue) at enrollment and following the intervention. Men were
randomized 1:1:1:1 to increasing levels of web-based behavioral support:
Level 1: website; Level 2: Level 1 plus personalized diet and exercise
prescription; Level 3: Levels 1-2 plus Fitbit and text messages; Level 4:
Levels 1-3 plus 2 30-minute coaching calls. T-tests were
used to compare pre-post change in mean QoL scores between each Level and
Level 1. Results: Two hundred and two men consented and were randomized (n = 49, 51, 50, 52 for
Levels 1-4, respectively). Men were predominantly white (93%), with a median
age of 70 years (Intra-quartile Range [IQR]: 65,75) and 3 years (IQR: 1,9)
post primary treatment for mostly localized disease (74% with T1-2). There
were no meaningful changes in QoL, but there were notable trends. Level 3
participants had small improvements in QLQ-C30 Global Health (5.46; 95% CI:
−0.02, 10.95) compared to Level 1. In contrast, Level 2 participants trended
toward decreasing Global QoL (−2.31, 95% CI: −8.05, 3.42), which may reflect
declines in function (eg, Cognitive: −6.94, 95% CI: −13.76, −0.13) and
higher symptom burden (eg, Diarrhea: 4.63, 95% CI: −1.48, 10.74). Conclusions: This short, web-based intervention did not appear to have an impact on PC
survivors’ QoL. Most men were several years past treatment for localized
disease; the potential for this approach to reduce symptoms and improve QoL
in men who have worse health may still be warranted.

Abstract
Older veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are at increased risk of obesity and cardiometabolic disease. Physical activity and healthy eating are two behaviors that impact health, functional independence, and disease risk in later life, yet few studies have examined the relationship between PTSD and diet quality. This secondary analysis aimed to: (a) characterize the diet quality of older veterans with PTSD in comparison to U.S. dietary guidelines and (b) explore if participation in a supervised exercise intervention spurred simultaneous changes in dietary behavior. Diet quality was assessed with the Dietary Screener Questionnaire (DSQ), which measures daily intake of fiber, calcium, added sugar, whole grain, dairy, and fruits/vegetables/legumes. The sample included 54 military veterans ≥ 60 years old with PTSD who participated in a randomized controlled pilot trial comparing 12 weeks of supervised exercise (n = 36) to wait-list usual care (n = 18). The DSQ was administered at baseline and 12 weeks. Consumption of added sugar exceeded U.S. dietary guideline recommendations and consumption of whole grains, fruits/vegetables/legumes, fiber, calcium, and dairy fell short. Participation in the supervised exercise intervention was not associated with changes in diet quality. Results revealed that the diet quality of older veterans with PTSD is poor, and while the exercise intervention improved health through exercise, it did not make veterans any more likely to adopt a more healthful diet. Interventions targeting diet, or diet + exercise, are needed to manage the increased risk of obesity and cardiometabolic disease present in older veterans with PTSD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Understanding factors influencing centenarians' nutritional status can offer insight into effective nutrition interventions to improve quality of life among this population. OBJECTIVE This cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the role of social support and loneliness on nutritional status among Oklahoma centenarians (N = 151). METHODS Nutritional status was assessed with the Short Form Mini Nutrition Assessment (MNA-SF). Perceived social support was assessed with the 24-item Social Provisions Scale. Loneliness was examined with the 10-item UCLA loneliness scale. RESULTS Ordinal logistic regression revealed that those who lacked social support were at increased risk of poor nutritional status (OR = 2.28, p < .05). Further, the model revealed that centenarians who reported lack of social support and loneliness had almost 2.8 times higher likelihood of being at risk of poor nutritional status compared to their socially connected counterparts (p < .01). CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Findings have implications for geriatric dietitians, social workers, and clinical counselors seeking to implement services and programs aimed at helping long-lived adults feel socially connected and maintain proper nutritional well-being.

Abstract
Objective: Approximately 50 % of Dutch community-dwelling older adults does not meet protein recommendations. This study assesses the effect of replacing low protein foods with protein-rich alternatives on the protein intake of Dutch community-dwelling older adults. Design: The Dutch National Food Consumption Survey—Older Adults 2010–2012 (DNFCS-OA) was used for scenario modelling. Dietary intake was estimated based on two 24-h recalls. Commonly consumed products were replaced by comparable products rich in protein (scenario 1), foods enriched in protein (scenario 2) and a combination of both (scenario 3). Replacement scenarios were confined to participants whose dietary protein intake was < 1·0 g/kg BW/d (n 391). Habitual protein intake of all older adults was estimated, adjusting for effects of within-person variation in the 2-d intake data. Setting: A simulation study based on the DNFCS-OA. Participants: 727 Dutch community-dwelling older adults aged 70+. Results: Mean protein intake of the total population increased from 1·0 to 1·2 g/kg BW/d (scenarios 1 and 2) and to 1·3 g/kg BW/d (scenario 3). The percentage of participants with intakes of ≥ 1·0 g/kg BW/d increased from 47·1 % to 91·4 %, 90·2 % and 94·6 %, respectively, in scenarios 1, 2 and 3. The largest increases in protein intake were due to replacements in food groups: yoghurt, cream desserts and pudding, potatoes, vegetables and legumes and non-alcoholic beverages and milk in scenario 1 and bread; yoghurt, cream desserts and pudding and soups in scenario 2. Conclusions: This simulation model shows that replacing low protein foods with comparable alternatives rich in protein can increase the protein intake of Dutch community-dwelling older adults considerably. Results can be used as a basis for nutritional counselling.

Abstract
Background Aging population and life expectancy are increasing globally, to cope with this trend, successful aging (SA) attracted the attention of gerontology research to determine its prevalence, risk factors, and its correlates. However, the published research about SA and older adult's health are sparse in Palestine. Objectives This study aimed to determine the prevalence and correlates of SA, normal aging, and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) among Palestinian older adults in Hebron governorates. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted during March 2018-May 2018 among a total of 185 participants selected by stratified random sampling from five different areas in Hebron governance. SA was defined based on the multidimentional model; absence of chronic diseases, normal functional status with complete independency, maintains normal cognitive and psychological function and social engagement. Sociodemographic data, nutrition, and health status were also collected and analyzed. Results The prevalence of SA among older Palestinians (22.2%), usual aging (58.9%), and the MCI (18.9%), with no significant difference in the prevalence between men and women P <0.05. The most prevalent subdomain is independent living skill (77.8%) and the lowest is the absence of chronic diseases (30.8%). SA was associated with younger older age (60-70 years), still working, and well-nourished participants. Conclusion The results of this study revealed, successful aging is associated with younger age, still working and good nutritional status. Further research with appropriate methodology different parts of Palestine is required.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Prevention of frailty is paramount in older adults. We evaluated the efficacy of a tailored multidomain intervention, monitored with the My Active and Healthy Aging platform, in reducing conversion from a prefrail status to overt frailty and preventing decline in quality of life. METHODS We performed a multicentre, multicultural, randomised control study. The effects of multidomain interventions on frailty parameters, quality of life, physical, cognitive, psychosocial function, nutrition and sleep were evaluated in a group of 101 prefrail older subjects and compared with 100 prefrail controls, receiving general health advice. RESULTS At the 12-month assessment, controls showed a decline in quality of life that was absent in the active group. In addition, active participants showed an increase in mood and nutrition function. No effect on remaining parameter was observed. Abstract
The relationship between adherence to a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is unclear, particularly in vulnerable older adults. This cross-sectional analysis explored the association between adherence to a MedDiet and subscales of HRQoL in two independent cohorts of overweight and obese middle-aged to older adults with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Both cohorts were community-dwelling (T2DM aged ≥ 50 years; non-T2DM aged ≥ 60 years) with a BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2. Adherence to a MedDiet was assessed using the Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener, and HRQoL was determined using the 36-item short-form health survey. Multiple regression analysis was used to examine the association between adherence to a MedDiet and HRQoL subscales. A total of 152 middle-aged to older adults were included (T2DM: n 87, 71·2 (sd 8·2) years, BMI: 29·5 (sd 5·9) kg/m2; non-T2DM: n 65, 68·7 (sd 5·6) years, BMI: 33·7 (sd 4·9) kg/m2). Mean adherence scores for the entire cohort were 5·3 (sd 2·2) (T2DM cohort: 5·6(sd 2·3); non-T2DM cohort: 4·9 (sd 2·0)). In the adjusted model, using pooled data from both study cohorts, adherence to a MedDiet was significantly associated with the general health subscale of HRQoL (β = 0·223; 95 % CI 0·006, 0·044; P = 0·001). Similar findings were also observed in the T2DM cohort (β = 0·280; 95 % CI 0·007, 0·054; P = 0·001). However, no additional significant associations between adherence to a MedDiet and HRQoL subscales were observed. We showed that adherence to a MedDiet was positively associated with the general health subscale of HRQoL in middle-aged to older adults with T2DM. However, larger longitudinal data in older adults with a wider range of adherence scores, particularly higher adherence, are required to better understand the direction of this relationship.

Abstract
Although epidemiological studies revealed a relationship between psychosocial states, such as depressive symptoms, and nutritional intake, limited information is currently available on vitamin intake. The Short Form-36 Health Survey (SF-36) is not limited to a specific disease, it is constructed based on a universal concept of health and is used to evaluate the Quality of life (QOL). A three-component scoring method was developed for “Physical component score (PCS)”, “Mental component score (MCS)”, and “Role/social score (RCS)”. Collectively, these summary scores are called the “QOL summary score”, which is regarded as a more detailed health summary score. In the present study, we aimed at epidemiologically examine the relationship between vitamin intake and QOL in middle-aged and elderly population in 3162 residents in Japan. In women, a multiple regression analysis showed a positive correlation between all vitamin intake and PCS scores, and between vitamin B6, folic acid, vitamin C, and MCS scores. In consideration of depression as MCS of SF-36 and chronic pain as PCS, an insufficient vitamin intake may affect QOL in women; however, a causal relationship has not yet been demonstrated.

Abstract
PURPOSE Creating a healthy lifestyle is important across different life stages. Commercial smart wearable devices are an innovative and interesting approach as an early psychological intervention for modifying health-related behaviors. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the effects of smart wearable devices on health-promoting lifestyles and quality of life. METHODS The study design was a three-parallel randomized controlled trial with a 3-month intervention. Two commercial smart wearable devices (smartwatches and smart bracelets) with different levels of complicated functions were applied as a psychological intervention in comparison with a smartphone app as the control group. Participants were healthy young adults with a median age of 26 years. Outcome measurements were conducted by self-administered questionnaires. Chi-square tests and ANOVA were performed for testing the difference of participants at baseline, and generalized estimating equations were performed for testing the effect of the intervention. RESULTS At the beginning, 81 participants were recruited and 73 participants completed the study. Results of a healthy lifestyle demonstrated significant group effects of exercise and a significant effect of the interaction for self-actualization and stress management in the experimental group with a smartwatch (Self-actualization: MD = 0.35[- 0.10,0.80]; Exercise: MD = 0.21[- 0.33 0.75]; Stress management: MD = 0.36[- 0.04,0.76]) by comparing with only using mobile app (Self-actualization: MD = - 0.03[- 0.25,0.18]; Exercise: MD = - 0.12[- 0.38,0.14]; Stress management, MD = - 0.28[- 0.55,0.00]). The significant effect of group-by-time interaction for self-actualization was found in the experimental group with a smart bracelet (MD = 0.05[- 0.30,0.20]) by comparing with the control group. The GEE-adjusted model indicated significant effects of the interaction on the comprehensive, physical, and mental quality of life in the experimental group with the smartwatch (Comprehensive: MD = 0.24[- 0.04,0.52]; Physical: MD = 0.67[0.26,1.09]; Mental: MD = 0.72[0.29,1.16]) by comparing with the control group (Comprehensive: MD = - 1.57[- 2.55, - 0.59]; Physical: MD = 0.25[0.00,0.50]; Mental: MD = 0.08[- 0.11,0.27]). CONCLUSION From a psychological perspective, smart wearable devices have potential benefits of shaping a healthy lifestyle and improving the quality of life. Enhancing the utility of commercial well-designed smart wearable devices is an innovative and effective strategy for promoting public health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health related quality of life (HRQOL) is a potent indicator of individual's happiness and life satisfaction. The way in which the HRQOL is affected by the diet is a topic of constant interest and debate among researchers. Evaluating the association between single nutrients or foods and HRQOL fails to take into consideration the complex interactions between nutrients. Also, the findings from previous investigations on the relationship between dietary patterns and HRQOL have been inconsistent. Therefore, our aim was to assess the existing evidence regarding the relationship between the dietary patterns and HRQOL by conducting a systematic review. METHODS A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Sciences and Google scholar databases from inception to March 2020, to identify studies that investigated associations between the dietary patterns (regardless of methods used to define dietary patterns) and HRQOL domains. Two researchers independently checked titles and abstracts, evaluated full-text studies, extracted data, and appraised their quality using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). RESULTS Thirteen studies (four longitudinal, and nine cross-sectional studies), with a total of 43,445 subjects, were included. Of the studies included in this review, eight studies evaluated the association between "Mediterranean" dietary patterns (MDP) and HRQOL, while five studies examined the association between different dietary patterns ("Healthy", "Unhealthy", "Western", "Fruit and vegetable", "Bread and butter" and etc.) and HRQOL. Excluding three studies which showed no significant association, healthy dietary patterns such as MDP, "Healthy" and "Fruit and vegetable" dietary patterns were associated with better HRQOL in physical and mental components scores. The quality assessment of included studies according to NOS criteria were ranged between medium to high quality. CONCLUSION According to the current evidence, "Healthy" dietary patterns and "Mediterranean" dietary patterns are associated with better dimension scores of HRQOL in both physical and mental summaries. While, unhealthy dietary patterns and "Western" dietary patterns are associated with lower scores of HRQOL. Further longitudinal studies are required to clarify the association between dietary patterns and HRQOL.

Abstract
Against a backdrop of an aging population in Europe, promoting health in older adults becomes a pressing issue. This study aimed to explore if correlations exist between the adherence to the Mediterranean diet and specific health outcomes such as the incidence of chronic cardio metabolic illnesses and experiencing depressive symptoms for elderly individuals. We also looked into probable links between regularly engaging in vigorous physical activities and these health outcomes. Our goal was to clearly demonstrate these relationships while controlling for several individual characteristics and socio-demographic factors on a cross-national scale within Europe. Using the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) data for adults aged 50 years and above, we found that following the Mediterranean diet was negatively correlated with the incidence of chronic illnesses, as well as with levels of depressive symptoms. These results were robust to the inclusion of a number of individual and socio-demographic controls. We also showed that regular participation in sports and other strenuous physical activities were associated with lesser chronic disorders and lower levels of depressive symptoms. These findings may have important implications in formulating preventive interventions on ensuring the quality of life of the older population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malnutrition, frailty and physical disability are inter-related, more prevalent in the older population and increase the risk of adverse health outcomes. Thus, screening is essential, especially in the understudied care home setting where the population is vulnerable and at higher risk of malnutrition. Furthermore, prevalence may vary depending upon screening tools used. The aims of this study were to: 1) investigate the prevalence of 1) malnutrition risk using Mini Nutritional Assessment - Short Form (MNA-SF) and Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST), 2) frailty using the Edmonton Frailty Scale (EFS), 3) physical disability using the Barthel Index (BI) and (4) examine the association between variables and coexistence of states. METHODS Screening for malnutrition (MNA-SF and MUST) and frailty (EFS) was performed as part of a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) in 527 residents from 17 care homes in Lincoln, UK. Mean age of the group was 85.6 ± 7.6 years and body mass index, BMI 23.0 ± 5.1 kg/m2. RESULTS A high prevalence of malnutrition risk was detected: 41.4% by MNA-SF and 25.5% by MUST (high risk/malnourished). Furthermore, there was a clear discordance between MNA-SF and MUST scoring of malnutrition; for example, the percentage of those identified as being at low risk was 18.8% using the MNA-SF and 57.0% using the MUST. In addition, there was a high prevalence of severe frailty by EFS (69.6%) and functional impairment by BI (62.0%). There was good association between some variables (P < 0.001) and 33.4% of residents had coexistence of all three states of malnutrition, frailty and physical disability. CONCLUSIONS Malnutrition risk, frailty and physical disability are highly prevalent in care home residents and interrelated. However, prevalence varies depending on the screening tool used. More research should be conducted in the care home setting to improve daily clinical practice as screening may impact upon subsequent treatment and care modalities and clinical outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer survivors (CS) with ostomies may face challenges in sustaining physical activity (PA) levels and maintaining healthy diets. This analysis describes lifestyle behaviors and their relationships with health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in CS with ostomies. METHODS This is a cross-sectional, secondary analysis of a multisite randomized self-management education trial for CS with ostomies. The baseline self-reported measures were queried on aerobic PA and diet using the City of Hope Quality of Life Ostomy measure, and the Self-Efficacy to Perform Self-Management Behaviors questionnaire (SE). PA was compared against the American Cancer Society PA guidelines for CS. Relationships between PA and HRQOL were evaluated using multiple linear regression, stratified by BMI. RESULTS Among 200 responders, fewer than 20% met or exceeded the PA guideline for cancer survivors; overall, confidence in the ability to perform gentle or aerobic PA was moderate (6/10 on the SE). Overall HRQOL (p = 0.038), psychological well-being (p = 0.017), and physical strength (p = 0.025) were associated with increased PA. Almost half (48.7%) of CS reported a special diet. CS with urostomies were less likely to report diet adjustments after their ostomy surgeries (OR: 0.16, 95% CI [0.08-0.38]) than CS with fecal ostomies. CONCLUSIONS Better HRQOL is associated with PA guideline achievement among CS with ostomies. Additionally, diet adjustments were reported more frequently in CS with fecal ostomies. Our findings bear clinical relevance for designing ostomy self-management and lifestyle recommendations for CS with ostomies. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS The evaluation of lifestyle behaviors may be an especially important focus for CS with ostomies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Given the increasing proportion of the Korean population that is aged 65 years and older, the present study analyzed the relationship between diet quality and sarcopenia in elderly persons by using data from the 2008-2011 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). SUBJECTS/METHODS Data for 3,373 persons aged 65 years and over (men: 1,455, 43.1%) were selected from the 2008-2011 KNHANES. Sarcopenia assessments are based on a formula that divides a subject's appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) by their weight (wt) and multiplies that result by 100 ([ASM/wt] × 100). Sarcopenia is present if the subject's result was less than one standard deviation (SD) below the sex-specific mean for a young reference group. For evaluation of diet quality, data obtained via the 24-hour recall method were used to calculate the Diet Quality Index for Koreans (DQI-K). A general linear model was applied in order to analyze general information and nutritional intake according to sarcopenia status. For analysis of the relationship between diet quality and sarcopenia, a binominal logistic regression analysis was undertaken. RESULTS The sarcopenia prevalence rate among the study subjects aged 65 years and over was 37.6%. The DQI-K of those without sarcopenia was 3.33 ± 0.04 points, while that of those with sarcopenia was 3.45 ± 0.04 points (P < 0.05). The relationship between diet quality and sarcopenia revealed that subjects aged 75 and older had a poor diet quality, and their odds ratio (OR) of sarcopenia presence was significantly higher (OR: 1.807, 95% confidence interval: 1.003-3.254, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS This study revealed that poor diet quality was related to sarcopenia presence in Koreans aged 75 and older. In order to improve the diet quality of the elderly (aged 75 and older), it is necessary to develop dietary improvement guidelines.

Abstract
Background In the elderly, nutritional status and quality of life (QOL) could potentially affect food purchasing behaviors. We examined the association between combinations of nutritional status and QOL and food purchasing motives among the elderly. Methods A total of 143 community-dwelling elderly were recruited in Seoul, South Korea. Nutritional status and QOL were assessed and participants were divided into four groups according to those combinations. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to examine the odds of food purchasing motives according to combinations of nutritional status and QOL. Results As a result of comparing the scores (mean ± SD) of the overall important factors for food purchasing, health related factors such as Nutrition quality and Preventive of treatment effect were the highest score (4.4 ± 0.8), followed by Price (4.1 ± 0.9), Ease of purchase (3.8 ± 0.9), Ease of chewing (3.7 ± 0.9), and Taste (3.6 ± 0.9). Participants with a low nutritional status and low QOL had more eating-related problems (77.8%) including chewing difficulty (48.9%) and constipation (17.8%) than those with a high nutritional status and high QOL (P < 0.05). Participants who were in high nutritional status and low QOL were more likely to be motivated by Ease of chewing (OR: 6.72; 95% CI: 1.44–31.37; P < 0.05), while those who were in low nutritional status and high QOL were less motivated by Taste (OR: 0.28; 95% CI: 0.08–0.94; P < 0.05) compared to those who were in high nutritional status and high QOL. Conclusions There were differences in food purchasing motives such as Ease of chewing or Taste according to combinations of nutritional status and QOL. These data are important in demonstrating differing motives for food choice across nutritional status and QOL, and also provide indications of which care service and food development may be needed in promoting health for the elderly in South Korea.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We thematically classified all titles of eight top psychological and social gerontology journals over a period of six decades, between 1961 and February, 2020. This was done in order to provide a broad overview of the main topics that interest the scientific community over time and place. METHODS We used natural language processing in order to analyze the data. In order to capture the diverse thematic clusters covered by the journals, a cluster analysis, based on "topic detection" was conducted. RESULTS A total of 15,566 titles were classified into 38 thematic clusters. These clusters were then compared over time and geographic location. The majority of titles fell into a relatively small number of thematic clusters and a large number of thematic clusters was hardly addressed. The most frequently addressed thematic clusters were: a) Cognitive functioning, b) Long term care and formal care, c) Emotional and personality functioning, d) health and e) Family and informal care. The least frequently addressed thematic clusters were: a) Volunteering, b) Sleep, c) Addictions, d) Suicide, and e) Nutrition. There was limited variability over time and place with regard to the most frequently addressed themes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Data on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in geriatric patients and non-hospitalized older people are lacking, and the associations among HRQoL, body mass index (BMI) and health status are not sufficiently investigated in these groups. AIM This study aims to describe and compare HRQoL in a sample of geriatric patients and non-hospitalized people >70 years. It further aims to investigate the associations between HRQoL, BMI, health status and sociodemographic variables in geriatric patients and non-hospitalized people >70 years. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 107 geriatric patients and 328 non-hospitalized older people. HRQoL was measured with the 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36) and BMI was divided into three classes: underweight (<22 kg/m2), normal weight (22-27 kg/m2) and overweight (>27 kg/m2). RESULTS All SF-36 scores were lower for the geriatric patients than for the non-hospitalized people (p < .001). Underweight (BMI <22 kg/m2) was registered for 43.9% of the geriatric patients and for 13.7% of the non-hospitalized people. No significant associations were found between the SF-36 subscale scores and underweight, but overweight was associated with lower scores on physical functioning (B: -8.7) and vitality (B: -6.8) compared to those with normal BMI (p < .05). The participants with rheumatic diseases, pulmonary diseases, hypertension and digestive diseases had significantly lower scores on most SF-36 scales reflecting physical health. CONCLUSION HRQoL is substantially lower in geriatric patients than in non-hospitalized older people. The negative effects of both overweight and morbidity on HRQoL indicate that it is important to monitor weight and disease symptoms to promote HRQoL in older people, whether hospitalized or non-hospitalized.

Abstract
Objective: Regular consumption of fruits and vegetables has been found to contribute to physical health and physical functioning. However, health is not limited to the absence of physical diseases but also encompasses mental health and cognition. Thus, we wanted to examine how the consumption of fruit and vegetables is associated with overall health, including mental health and cognitive health of older European adults.Design: We used multilevel regression analysis (participants nested within countries) to examine the effects of nutrition on overall health. Participants were asked in 2011 about their health behaviour including nutritional habits. Several health outcomes were measured longitudinally in 2013: Self-rated health, grip strength, instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), activities of daily living (ADL), mobility, depression, quality of life, short-term memory, and long-term memory.Setting: We used the 2011 and 2013 waves of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), a multi-national population survey of older adults.Subjects:N = 22,635 older adults were sampled from 11 European countries.Results: Frequent consumption of fruits and vegetables is associated with improved health outcomes, including cognitive and mental health.Conclusions: Frequent consumption of fruits and vegetables contributes to slower disablement processes and might be an easily implementable way to improve the overall health of older adults. Future studies should examine the cross-national differences in the observed effects.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to assess whether general practitioners (GPs) monitor and evaluate the health behavior of their patients in the field of a diet, physical activity, and weight control, and whether they provide appropriate counselling as part of this evaluation. Predictors of those activities among physicians were also determined. The cross-sectional study was conducted in the Piotrkowski district among 200 GPs. The questionnaire covered socio-demographic data and lifestyle characteristics of the physicians, their role as healthy lifestyle providers, and whether they assess lifestyle characteristics of their patients and perform healthy lifestyle counselling. More than 60% of the GPs did not evaluate lifestyle features during their patients’ examination. In total, 56% of the GPs provided healthy lifestyle recommendations among patients who have not been diagnosed with chronic lifestyle-related diseases but who do not follow healthy recommendations, and 73% of GPs provided recommendations to patients with chronic diseases related to lifestyle. The study showed that the chance to assess lifestyle characteristics of the patients was significantly higher for the GPs who believed that they were obliged to do so (OR = 6.5; p = 0.002). The chance to recommend a healthy lifestyle among patients who have not been diagnosed with chronic lifestyle-related diseases but who do not follow healthy recommendations was 5.9 times higher among the GPs working in the public sector (p < 0.001) and 16.3 times higher for these who believed that they had sufficient knowledge to provide the advice (p = 0.02). The following predictors of providing a healthy lifestyle counselling among patients with diagnosed chronic lifestyle-related diseases were identified: conviction that a GPs is obligated to provide it (OR = 4.4; p = 0.02), sufficient knowledge (OR = 8.7; p = 0.01), and following health recommendations by themselves (OR = 3.9; p = 0.04). Conclusions: The identified predictors are crucial for the development of appropriate strategies aiming at increasing GPs’ involvement in preventive measures and consequently at improving the population’s health.

Abstract
Intermittent fasting improves metabolic and cardiac health. However, increased hunger towards the end of the fasting period may affect compliance and limit its application. Our aim was to determine the effect of anorexigenic agent co-therapy on subjective ratings of appetite during the 16–24 h period of a day-long water-only intermittent fast. Thirty adult men were recruited and required to fast for 24 h from 18:00 h to 18:00 h on the same day of the week for three subsequent weeks. Treatments of either a placebo or one of two doses (high dose; HD: 250 mg or low dose; LD: 100 mg) of a bitter hops-based appetite suppressant (Amarasate®) were given twice per day at 16 and 20 h into the fast. From 18–24 h of the 24 h fast, both the HD and LD treatment groups exhibited a statistically significant (p < 0.05) > 10% reduction in hunger. Additionally, the expected lunchtime increase in hunger that was present in the placebo group (12:00 h) was absent in both the HD and LD groups. These data suggest that appetite suppressant co-therapy may be useful in reducing hunger during intermittent fasting, and show that bitter compounds may regulate appetite independently of meal timing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore food perceptions among grandparents and understand the influence of these perceptions on food choice for the younger generations in their family. DESIGN Qualitative methodology, thematic analysis of the transcripts from fourteen focus groups. SETTING Grandparents in the southern region of the United States. SUBJECTS Participants were fifty-eight Black, Hispanic, and White grandparents, predominantly women (72%), ranging in age from 44-86 years (mean age = 65·4 (sd 9·97) years). RESULTS Grandparents' perceptions related to personal food choice were related to health issues and the media. Grandparents' perceived influence on their children's and grandchildren's food choices was described through the themes of proximity and power (level of influence based on an interaction of geographic proximity to grandchildren and the power given to them by their children and grandchildren to make food decisions), healthy v. unhealthy spoiling, cultural food tradition, and reciprocal exchange of knowledge. CONCLUSION Our results highlight areas for future research including nutrition interventions for older adults as well as factors that may be helpful to consider when engaging grandparents concerning food decisions for younger generations to promote health. Specifically, power should be assessed as part of a holistic approach to addressing dietary influence, the term 'healthy spoiling' can be used to reframe notions of traditional spoiling, and the role of cultural food tradition should be adapted differently by race.

Abstract
The relationship between aging and perception of health and quality of life is complex and its mediation mechanisms need to be further explored. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effects of total energy expenditure and intake, body mass, and body image dissatisfaction on the relationship between age and perception of health and quality of life. Forty-two senior athletes, 55 physically active, and 61 sedentary individuals (aged 55–84 years) were evaluated for total energy expenditure (EE), energy intake (EI), body mass index (BMI), absolute Body Dissatisfaction Index (BDIabx), and physical (PCS) and mental (MCS) health and quality of life perception. Multiple mediation analyses were applied to assess the relationship between age and PCS and MCS indices, through the mediators EE, EI, BMI, and BDIabx. For MCS, but not for PSC, the mediation analysis showed: (a) a direct effect of age; (b) a mediation path through EE, EI, BMI, and BDIabx; and (c) a positive total effect. The combination of positive and negative mediating effects influencing the mental health perception underlined that with advancing age, the maintenance of high levels of energy expenditure through physical activity could positively impact body image satisfaction and, in turn, mental health.

Abstract
AIM Quality of life (QOL) in older adults can be affected by many factors, such as dementia, sarcopenia and frailty. This study sought to identify factors that can lead to global deterioration in QOL among older outpatients, including factors stated in caregiver reports. This study also evaluated the discrepancy between QOL ratings reported by the patients and those by their family or professional caregivers. METHODS The sample comprised 141 patients with a Mini-Mental State Examination score ≥20 and a Clinical Dementia Rating of 0.5-1, indicating mild cognitive impairment to mild dementia. QOL was assessed using both components of the EQ-5D scale, namely, the index score and visual analog scale. In addition, cognitive, neuropsychological, nutritional and physical function tests were carried out, and body measurements were taken. RESULTS Patients' self-reported QOL was significantly associated with basic activities of daily living, Mini Nutritional Assessment score and Geriatric Depression Scale-15. QOL rated by caregivers was significantly associated with basic activities of daily living. EQ-5D index scores reported by caregivers were lower than those reported by patients. Furthermore, patients achieved a better score for self-care, usual activities, pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression than those assigned by caregivers. CONCLUSIONS As far as the patient's ratings are concerned, the presence of depressive symptoms and a worse nutritional status were indicative of lower QOL, whereas a better functional status was associated with a higher QOL. For caregivers, however, the most relevant factor negatively affecting QOL was basic activities of daily living. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2019; 19: 999-1005.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify variables that explain satisfaction with food-related life in Ecuadorian elderly people. DESIGN Stratified random sampling with proportional affixation within each retirement home was conducted based on the rate of rurality, gender, age, and living circumstances. SETTING Retirement homes in Guayaquil, Ecuador. PARTICIPANTS The sample consisted of 817 elderly people of both genders (47.5% women; mean age 73.7 years; SD 7.45 years; range 60-101 years) registered in retirement homes located in Guayaquil, Ecuador. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Satisfaction With Life scale, satisfaction with food-related life (SWFL), and 22 food-related perceived resources. ANALYSIS Generalized linear models. RESULTS Gender, food consumption expenditure, satisfaction with economic situation, unhealthy days, family importance, food-related lifestyles, food neophobia, and the sum of 22 resources were found to be associated with SWFL. In addition, the Pearson bivariate correlation between the Satisfaction With Life scale and SWFL was .38 (P < .01). CONCLUSIONS Perceived resources contributed to SWFL and the greatest satisfaction with life was observed among older adults who were more satisfied with their food.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To characterise the nutritional status and to identify malnutrition-associated variables of older adults living in Portuguese nursing homes. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. Data on demographic and socio-economic characteristics, self-reported morbidity, eating-related problems, nutritional status, cognitive function, depression symptoms, loneliness feelings and functional status were collected by trained nutritionists through a computer-assisted face-to-face structured interview followed by standardised anthropometric measurements. Logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with being at risk of malnutrition/malnourished. SETTING Portuguese nursing homes. SUBJECTS Nationally representative sample of the Portuguese population aged 65 years or over living in nursing homes. RESULTS A total of 1186 individuals (mean age 83·4 years; 72·8 % women) accepted to participate. According to the Mini Nutritional Assessment, 4·8 (95 % CI 3·2, 7·3) % were identified as malnourished and 38·7 (95 % CI 33·5, 44·2) % were at risk of malnutrition. These percentages increased with age and were significantly higher for women. Logistic regression showed (OR; 95 % CI) that older adults reporting no or little appetite (6·5; 2·7, 15·3), those revealing symptoms of depression (2·6; 1·6, 4·2) and those who were more dependent in their daily living activities (4·7; 2·0, 11·1) were also at higher odds of being malnourished or at risk of malnutrition. CONCLUSIONS Malnutrition and risk of malnutrition are prevalent among nursing home residents in Portugal. It is crucial to routinely screen for nutritional disorders, as well as risk factors such as symptoms of depression and lower functional status, to prevent and treat malnutrition.

Extent and Predictors of Poor Glycaemic Control among Elderly Pakistani Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Multi-Centre Cross-Sectional Study. ACTA ACUST UNITED AC 2019; 55:medicina55010021. Abstract
Objectives: This study aimed to explore the relationship between glycaemic control and factors that may influence this among elderly type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients in Lahore, Pakistan. Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted at the Jinnah and Sir Ganga Ram Hospitals, Lahore using convenience sampling techniques between 1 December 2015 and 28 February 2016. The sample consisted of elderly (>65 years) T2DM patients. Glycaemic values and patient characteristics were obtained from medical charts. Consenting patients were interviewed to complete the Barthel Index, Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale, Clinical Frailty Scale, Iowa Pain Thermometer Scale, Geriatric Depression Scale, Montreal Cognitive Assessment tool, Mini Nutritional Assessment Scale—Short Form and Self Care Inventory—Revised Version. Multiple logistic regression analysis was carried out to determine the predictors of poor glycaemic control. Results: A total of 490 patients were approached and 400 agreed to participate. Overall, nearly one-third (32.2%, n = 129) of patients had glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) at the target level. Fasting and random plasma glucose levels were within the target range to much the same extent; (36.8%, n = 147) and (27%, n = 108), respectively. HbA1c levels were also higher in patients with co-morbidities (67.4%, n = 229) with diabetes-related complications (73.5%, n = 227). Significant predictors of impaired glycaemic control (HbA1c) included poor diabetes self-care (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 0.96; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.95, 0.98), not being prescribed oral hypoglycaemic agents (OHA) (AOR 6.22; 95% CI 2.09, 18.46), regular hypoglycaemic attacks (AOR 2.53; 95% CI 1.34, 4.81) and falling tendency (AOR 0.19; 95% CI 0.10, 0.36). Conclusions: Poor glycaemic control prevailed among the majority of elderly Pakistani diabetic patients in this study. Triggering factors of poor glycaemic control should be taken into consideration by the healthcare professionals in targeting multifaceted interventions to achieve good glycaemic control.

Abstract
Individuals 65 years or older will comprise an estimated 20.0% of the U.S. population by 2030. This study investigated the association between food insecurity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among an older adult population (n = 234). HRQoL was measured using Healthy Days, a validated survey tool developed by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. Food-insecure individuals were more likely to report ≥14 physically unhealthy days (OR = 1.49, 95% CI 0.47-4.78) and ≥14 days with activity limitations (OR = 4.07, 95% CI 0.68-24.1). Although nonsignificant, the findings highlight food insecurity as a potentially important social determinant of health throughout the life course, including at an older age.
