Abstract
Sleep is a vital biological function that significantly influences overall health. While sleep deprivation (SD) and circadian rhythm disruption are known to negatively impact various organs, their specific effects on kidney function remain understudied. This study aimed to investigate the impact of chronic partial sleep deprivation and circadian rhythm disruption on renal function in rats, providing insights into the relationship between sleep disturbances and kidney health. A total of 40 male Wistar rats were divided into five groups: a control group, a group with circadian rhythm disruption (CIR), a group with sleep deprivation during the light phase (SD-AM), a group with sleep deprivation during the dark phase (SD-PM), and a group with combined sleep deprivation and circadian rhythm disruption (SD-CIR). Sleep deprivation was induced using a specialized machine, depriving rats of sleep for 4 h daily, while circadian rhythm disruption was achieved through a 3.5-h light/dark cycle. After four weeks, kidney tissues and blood samples were collected for histological and biochemical analyses. The results showed that all experimental groups exhibited reduced water intake, with the CIR and SD-CIR groups also showing significantly lower food intake and reduced weight gain compared to controls. Oxidative stress markers revealed increased serum malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the SD-PM and SD-CIR groups. Despite these metabolic and oxidative changes, histological examination of the kidneys revealed no significant alterations in renal structure or function across the groups. This study highlights the negative effects of chronic partial sleep deprivation and circadian rhythm disruption on feeding behavior, weight gain, and oxidative stress in rats. However, these interventions did not significantly alter renal structure or function. Further research is needed to explore the physiological mechanisms underlying these findings and the potential long-term effects of sleep disturbances on kidney health.

Abstract
This article examines the study by Lin et al, which explores the effects of night sentry duties on cardiometabolic health in military personnel. The research identifies significant correlations between the frequency of night shifts and negative cardiometabolic outcomes, such as elevated resting pulse rates and lowered levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. These outcomes underscore the health risks linked to partial sleep deprivation, a common challenge in military environments. The editorial highlights the clinical significance of these findings, advocating for the implementation of targeted health interventions to mitigate these risks. Strategies such as structured sleep recovery programs and lifestyle modifications are recommended to improve the health management of military personnel engaged in nocturnal duties. By addressing these issues, military health management can better safeguard the well-being and operational readiness of its personnel.

Abstract
Effective stress management is crucial for optimal competition performance in athletes. Sleep deprivation (SD) can elevate physiological and psychological stress, and the SD-changed cognitive and emotion may reflect stress management capability and hold the predictive possibility for athletes' performance in official competitions over some time; however, it lacks evidence. Here, we aim to increase stress level for athletes by 24 h SD and identify the predictive effects of cognitive and emotional changes after 24 h SD on sports performance in official competitions over ∼1.5 months. Sixty-five winter sports athletes (35 males) were recruited from college (test set) and professional athletes (validation set) separately. The anxiety and cortisol levels were assessed at baseline, after 24 h SD, and official competition. Athletes underwent cognitive tasks (Stroop, Go/No-Go, Competitive Reaction Time Task, and Iowa Gambling Task) and the event-related potential recording at baseline and after SD. Competition performance levels (supernormal, normal, and abnormal) were categorized based on a consensus of subjective and objective evaluations. We found anxiety and cortisol levels following 24 h SD were equaled with those observed in official competition. Notably, only the decreased incongruent Stroop response after 24 h SD was negatively associated with performance in official competition. The corresponding P3 component, particularly the delta frequency at the central lobe, largely mediated this effect. These findings highlight that athletes who effectively employ cognitive skills to manage stress under acute SD tend to exhibit superior performance.

Abstract
Sleep deprivation (SD) continues to be used today to examine the role of sleep across diverse cognitive domains. Extensive research has been conducted to investigate the impact of SD on memory, though findings across studies have been inconsistent. This meta-analysis systematically assessed the effects of SD on memory performance in rats and identified the factors that may moderate these effects. PubMed, PsychInfo, Google scholar, and Scopus databases were used to search for studies. Out of 128 identified studies, 25 studies with 78 reports were included in the final analysis. A random effects meta-analysis was performed, along with subgroup analysis and meta-regression. The results showed that overall, SD has a negative impact on memory in rats. Additionally, sex, memory response type, and number of learning trials for spatial tasks can act as moderators of the relationship between SD and memory. The type of memory task and assessment method used contributed to variability in observed outcomes, with hippocampus-dependent tasks showing the most pronounced memory impairments. The number of learning trials for spatial tasks also moderated the effects, with more trials mitigating the impact of SD. These findings reinforce the role of sleep in memory, particularly for hippocampus-dependent tasks.

Abstract
Adolescents with Internet addiction (IA) frequently encounter elevated levels of anxiety and depression, which subsequently results in the perpetuation of their addiction behaviors. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for children (MBCT-C) is an adapted version of traditional MBCT that targets emotional problems in children. The present study aimed to provide a framework for the implementation of a clinical trial for its effectiveness in reducing anxiety, depression, and IA in adolescents with IA. This study protocol proposes a randomized controlled trial with two parallel arms (MBCT-C versus active control). Eighty Iranian adolescents (Persian ethnicity; males and females; 12 to 15 years) diagnosed with IA will be randomly assigned to the intervention group (12 sessions of MBCT-C group therapy) or the control group (12 life skills training sessions). Pre-intervention, post-intervention, and three-month follow-up assessments will be conducted using Mindful Attention Awareness Scale-Adolescents (MAAS-A), Mindfulness Program Satisfaction Questioner (MPSQ), Reynolds Adolescent Depression Scale (RADS), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-Children (STAI-C), MBCT-C Adherence Scale (MBCT-C-AS), and Internet Addiction Test (IAT). Data will be analyzed using mixed regression model using STATA-18 to assess the effectiveness of MBCT-C. The current study has the potential to make a significant contribution to evaluate the effectiveness of MBCT-C to address IA, anxiety, and depression in adolescents with IA.

Abstract
The amount of sleep for children has been decreasing in the past decades. Artificial light at night in home and community settings is linked with increased sleep disturbances. Recently, smartphone and tablet use has increased among children and in childcare settings. We investigated the neighborhood environment (urban vs. rural) affects sleep time, screen time usage, and melatonin and cortisol concentration in real living conditions of preschool children in Japan. In this study, 26 children aged 3-6 years from urban and rural areas in Japan were participated. We collected saliva samples for melatonin and cortisol for three times. A questionnaire was given to the parents of the children to assess smartphone and television usage, and sleep duration for two weeks. We found that television watching time was significantly longer in urban area than in rural area (181 ± 82 min/day in urban vs. 112 ± 80 min/day in rural). However, melatonin and cortisol concentrations and sleep time were not significantly different between the rural and the urban areas. These results show that urban preschool children may engage in more screen time behavior than their rural counterparts. Finally, these findings may suggest the need for education and quality improvement initiatives to promote a healthy balance between sleep and sedentary screen time in both communities.

Abstract
Dental caries remains the most common chronic disease in childhood. This study aimed to identify environmental stressors in children and estimate the association between salivary cortisol level as a stress biomarker and childhood caries. We conducted a case-control study involving 80 Egyptian children. The cases were 40 children with early childhood caries (ECC). The controls included 40 caries-free children. Data were collected from the parents or caregivers of the children using a questionnaire. The clinical examination included caries experience and an oral hygiene index. Saliva samples were collected and tested for unbounded cortisol levels. The results from the current study showed that the mean age for participants was 5.09 ± 0.66 years. Twenty-one of the children with ECC were girls. In multivariate regression, there is a significant association between ECC and elevated salivary cortisol levels (> 0.57 µg/dl) with an adjusted odds ratio (AOR) of 9.649 (p = 0.003), father smoking (AOR = 5.791, p = 0.030), sleeping with a bottle or food in the mouth (AOR = 8.481, p = 0.027), and poor oral hygiene evaluated through the Silness-Löe Plaque Index (AOR = 6.681, p = 0.001). As a conclusion, the study indicates that salivary cortisol is an independent stress biomarker in relation to early childhood caries. Salivary cortisol as a stress biomarker can help clinicians provide an additional assessment tool for identifying caries risk in children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep deprivation can decrease parental well-being and degrade mental and physical health in parents of children with chronic illness. The aim of this study was to explore the associations of sleep quality, psychological stress perception, and evening salivary cortisol concentration with self-esteem, optimism and happiness in parents of children with type 1 diabetes and developmental disorders compared to parents of healthy, typically developing children. METHODS We studied 196 parents of children with chronic conditions, including autistic spectrum disorder (N = 33), cerebral palsy (N = 18), Down syndrome (N = 33), and diabetes mellitus type 1 (N = 40) and parents of healthy children (N = 72). We evaluated parental sleep quality, evening salivary cortisol levels, self-esteem, optimism and happiness. Multiple linear regression models were used to assess associations between variables. RESULTS Compared with those of the control group, the parents of children with autistic spectrum disorders had higher evening cortisol concentrations (β = 0.17; p = 0.038) and lower perceptions of happiness (β=-0.17; p = 0.017), while parents of children with type 1 diabetes had disrupted sleep quality (β = 0.25; p = 0.003). Optimism was negatively associated with the evening cortisol concentration (β=-0.18; p = 0.023) and sleep quality index (β=-0.20; p = 0.012). CONCLUSIONS Public health programs aimed at lifestyle habit improvement, respite care, and relaxation for parents of children with chronic conditions would be useful for improving parental sleep quality, self-esteem, optimism and happiness.

Abstract
Luteolin is a natural flavonoid compound exists in various fruits and vegetables. Recent studies have indicated that luteolin has variety pharmacological effects, including a wide range of antidepressant properties. Here, we systematically review the preclinical studies and limited clinical evidence on the antidepressant and neuroprotective effects of luteolin to fully explore its antidepressant power. Network pharmacology and molecular docking analyses contribute to a better understanding of the preclinical models of depression and antidepressant properties of luteolin. Seventeen preclinical studies were included that combined network pharmacology and molecular docking analyses to clarify the antidepressant mechanism of luteolin and its antidepressant targets. The antidepressant effects of luteolin may involve promoting intracellular noradrenaline (NE) uptake; inhibiting 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) reuptake; upregulating the expression of synaptophysin, postsynaptic density protein 95, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, B cell lymphoma protein-2, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione S-transferase; and decreasing the expression of malondialdehyde, caspase-3, and amyloid-beta peptides. The antidepressant effects of luteolin are mediated by various mechanisms, including anti-oxidative stress, anti-apoptosis, anti-inflammation, anti-endoplasmic reticulum stress, dopamine transport, synaptic protection, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis regulation, and 5-HT metabolism. Additionally, we identified insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R), AKT serine/threonine kinase 1 (AKT1), prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2 (PTGS2), estrogen receptor alpha (ESR1), and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) as potential targets, luteolin has an ideal affinity for these targets, suggesting that it may play a positive role in depression through multiple targets, mechanisms, and pathways. However, the clinical efficacy of luteolin and its potential direct targets must be confirmed in further multicenter clinical case-control and molecular targeting studies.

Abstract
Sleep deprivation significantly affects both physiological and psychological health, with various experimental models used to study these impacts. This study compares three sleep deprivation models-Modified Multiple Platform Method (MMPM), treadmill method, and p-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA) method-on key physiological, cognitive, and emotional parameters in male Sprague-Dawley rats. The rats were subjected to 72 hours of sleep deprivation using these methods, followed by behavioral, cognitive, physiological, and biochemical assessments. Results indicated that the treadmill and PCPA methods led to significant reductions in both NREM and REM sleep (P < 0.05), with the PCPA method showing the most severe emotional effects, including heightened anxiety and depressive behaviors (P < 0.001). Cognitive impairments were most pronounced in the MMPM and treadmill groups (P < 0.01). All sleep deprivation models showed signs of autonomic nervous system dysfunction, as reflected by elevated LF/HF ratios in heart rate variability assessments (P < 0.05). Neurochemical analysis revealed reductions in hypothalamic 5-HT, Glu, and GABA levels, with the MMPM and treadmill methods causing more pronounced decreases (P < 0.05). Additionally, IL-2 levels significantly decreased while TNF-α levels increased in sleep-deprived rats compared to controls (P < 0.05). These findings highlight the distinct physiological, emotional, and cognitive impacts of different sleep deprivation models, providing a basis for model selection in future studies.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Repeated exposure to familiar visual sequences drives experience-dependent and sequence-specific plasticity in mouse primary visual cortex (V1). Prior work demonstrated a critical role for sleep in consolidating a related but mechanistically distinct form of experience-dependent plasticity in V1. Here, we assessed the role of sleep in consolidation of spatiotemporal sequence learning (sequence plasticity) in mouse V1. METHODS Visually evoked potentials were recorded in awake, head-fixed mice viewing sequences of four visual stimuli. Each sequence was presented 200 times per session, across multiple sessions, to drive plasticity. The effects of sleep consolidation time and sleep deprivation on plasticity were assessed. RESULTS Sequence plasticity occurred in V1 following as little as 1 hour of ad libitum sleep and increased with longer periods of sleep. Sleep deprivation blocked sequence plasticity consolidation, which recovered following subsequent sleep. CONCLUSIONS Sleep is required for the consolidation of sequence plasticity in mouse V1.

Abstract
Poor sleep quality is a major issue for many adolescents and is associated with fatigue, poor academic performance, and depression. Adolescence is a crucial neurodevelopmental stage where multiple neuropsychiatric illnesses often emerge, suggesting increased central nervous system vulnerability, specifically at this age, which could be exacerbated by poor sleep. Studies on adolescent mice show that sleep deprivation or sleep disturbance (SD) induces structural and functional brain changes, indicating that SD affects the adolescent brain. The long-term consequences of such changes are poorly understood. We hypothesize that SD during adolescence increases vulnerability to future depression triggers in adulthood, such as social isolation or inflammation. To test this, female adolescent mice (post-natal day (P)36) were subjected to SD for seven days, 4 h per day during the light phase (zeitgeber time 2-6). We demonstrate that this SD protocol acutely leads to changes in the expression of Cx3Cr1, and Dnmt3b in the hippocampus and of Htr1a in the prefrontal cortex. To examine the long-term consequences of the SD protocol during adulthood (P77-84), the mice were then either exposed to single housing or received a single injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to mimic known triggers of depression. Behavioral changes were examined using digital ventilated cages to track home-cage activity and the open field and tail suspension tests to assess anxiety- and despair-like behavior, respectively. In contrast to our hypothesis, we did not observe any changes in home-cage activity, anxiety- or despair-like behavior as a result of combining SD in adolescent female mice with a depression trigger in adulthood. We conclude that the adolescent brain is sensitive to SD, but SD during adolescence in mice does not lead to an exacerbated depression-like response to social isolation or inflammation during adulthood.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aims to establish the effects of ACEs on multimorbidity through sleep quality and investigate whether lifestyle factors (e.g., eating habits and exercise) may influence this relationship among middle-aged and older adults. METHODS Participants were drawn from a cross-sectional sample of community dwelling older adults (N = 276, 55+) and three waves of data from the Midlife in the United States study (MIDUS, N = 843). We examined the direct and indirect effects of ACEs, sleep quality, and health conditions, as well as the conditional effects of physical activity and eating habits. RESULTS Across both samples, sleep quality mediated the relationship between ACEs and chronic health conditions. Moderating effects of unhealthy eating and physical activity differed between samples. DISCUSSION Sleep quality is an important pathway connecting ACEs and adult multimorbidity, and health behaviors may provide targets for intervention particularly in older adults.

Abstract
AIM To examine the associations between physical activity patterns, sleep quality, and stress levels among rotating-shift nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. BACKGROUND Stress adversely impacts hospital nurses, particularly those on rotating shifts. The effects of physical activity patterns and sleep quality on the stress levels of these nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic warrant investigation. METHODS A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted with 550 eligible registered hospital nurses, randomly selected from four hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic in Taiwan. The work schedule type of these nurses was categorized into rotating shifts (working at least two shifts in a month, involving day, evening, and night shifts) or fixed-day shifts (working only the day shift). Data were collected on sociodemographic characteristics, physical activity patterns (sedentary or active), sleep quality (poor or adequate), and stress levels for analysis. RESULTS Rotating-shift nurses with active physical activity patterns exhibited lower stress levels compared with those with sedentary patterns. Nurses who experienced adequate sleep quality had lower stress levels compared with those with poor sleep quality among rotating and fixed-day shift nurses. CONCLUSIONS Active physical activity patterns and adequate sleep quality were associated with lower stress levels among rotating-shift nurses during the pandemic. Promoting active physical activity and enhancing sleep quality are essential strategies for reducing stress in these nurses. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY Strategies aimed at promoting physical activity and improving sleep quality should be integral components of health promotion programs and policymaking efforts directed at nursing leaders, to foster a healthy and supportive work environment and enhance the welfare of rotating-shift hospital nurses. REPORTING METHOD The study is reported using the statement of Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE).

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the face of inevitable declines in alertness and fatigue resulting from sleep deprivation, effective countermeasures are essential for maintaining performance. External trigeminal nerve stimulation (eTNS) presents a potential avenue for regulating alertness by activating the locus coeruleus and reticular activating system. METHODS Here, we conducted a within-subject study with 66 habitual nappers, subjecting them to afternoon nap-deprivation and applying either 20-minute of 120 Hz eTNS or sham stimulation. We compared participants' performance in PVT and N-back tasks, subjective fatigue level and alertness ratings, and changes in heart rate variability, cortisol, and salivary alpha-amylase before and after stimulation. RESULTS The results revealed a significant decline in PVT and N-back tasks performance, along with increased subjective fatigue levels in the sham stimulation group. In contrast, the eTNS stimulation group maintained behavioral performance, with lower post-stimulation fatigue levels than sham group. After stimulation, the eTNS group exhibited decreased mean R-R interval and elevated LF/HF ratios, i.e., a shift in autonomic nervous system activity towards sympathetic dominance, and a significant reduction in cortisol levels, indicating a state of relaxation alleviating drowsiness. CONCLUSION These findings suggested that 120 Hz eTNS stimulation might induce a relaxing effect, and thereby alleviate fatigue while preserving alertness and cognitive performance.

Abstract
Background: Pattern recognition and machine learning-based classification approaches are frequently used, especially in the health field. In this research, a new feature extraction model inspired by the melatonin hormone (sleep hormone) and named MelPat (melatonin pattern) has been developed. The developed model has been tested on an open access dataset. Materials and Methods: An open access sleep deprivation electroencephalography (EEG) dataset was tested to evaluate the MelPat method. There are two classes in the dataset. These are (a) sleep deprivation (SD) and (b) healthy control (HC) groups, respectively. In this study, EEG signals were divided into 15 s segments, thus obtaining 1377 SD and 1378 HC samples. In the next phase of the research, a new feature extraction model was proposed, and this model was named MelPat as it was inspired by the melatonin hormone. Additionally, the feature vector was expanded using the statistical moment approach. In the signal decomposition phase of the model, the Tunable Q-Wavelet Transform (TQWT) method was used. Thus, the signal was decomposed into sub-bands, and feature extraction was applied to each band. Neighborhood Component Analysis (NCA) and Chi2 methods were used together to reduce the dimension of the feature vector and select the most significant features. In this phase, the most significant features from both feature selection algorithms were combined, and the final feature vector was obtained. In the classification phase of the model, the Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm, which is a shallow classifier, was used. The dataset used in the research has 61 channels. Therefore, after obtaining channel-based results, the iterative majority voting (IMV) algorithm was applied to achieve higher classification performance and generalize the results, and the most accurate results were automatically selected. Results: With the proposed MelPat algorithm, a high classification success of 97.71% was achieved on the open access sleep deprivation dataset. Conclusions: The obtained results show that the MelPat-based new classification approach is highly effective on the dataset collected for SD detection. Moreover, the fact that the proposed method is inspired by the melatonin chemical, which is the sleep hormone, makes the method attractive and ironic.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Examine very short sleep among adolescents across multiple intersecting social positions and experiences of sexual orientation-based bullying and cyberbullying in two statewide samples. METHODS A harmonization of two large statewide school-based datasets from grades 9-12 (2019 Minnesota Student Survey, and 2018-2019 California Healthy Kids Survey) was utilized for the analysis (N = 379,710). Exhaustive chi-square automatic interaction detection (an approach for quantitative intersectionality research) explored variability in very short sleep (≤5 hours/night) among adolescents from multiple intersecting social positions (race/ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, and sex assigned at birth), grade, state, and two types of bullying experiences (sexual orientation-based bullying and cyberbullying). Intersectional groups reporting the highest prevalence of very short sleep were identified. We compared very short sleep rates among adolescents from the same social positions who experienced bullying with those who did not experience bullying. RESULTS Very short sleep was common among this sample of adolescents (19.2%), especially among those holding multiple marginalized social positions (36.9%-51.4%). Adolescents who were transgender or gender diverse or questioning gender identity, and with minoritized sexual and racial/ethnic identities were overrepresented among high prevalence groups of very short sleep. Bullying experiences were reported by all highest prevalence groups. Adolescents who were bullied had 24.9%-51.3% higher rates of very short sleep than adolescents from the same intersecting social positions who were not bullied. CONCLUSIONS Very short sleep is pervasive among marginalized adolescents. Findings suggest that victimization contributes to adolescents' very short sleep rates. Individual-level interventions may fall short of promoting better sleep among adolescents; systemic interventions addressing bullying are needed. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION N/A.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Dravet syndrome (DS) is a severe developmental and epileptic encephalopathy that requires significant caregiver input across the lifespan. This predominantly falls on parents, who are faced with considerable challenges including physical demands, financial burdens, and sustained pressure on mental wellbeing leading to mental health difficulties. We aimed to develop a grounded theory model for the process of coping and adjustment that occurs when caring for a child who has a diagnosis of DS. METHODS Using a Constructivist Grounded Theory methodology, we conducted five focus groups, each with 4-6 participants, and 24 in total. They were recruited via convenience sampling through a national Dravet syndrome patient advocacy group. Focus group dialogue was recorded, transcribed, and coded into themes to generate a theory of coping and adjustment that is grounded in the data. RESULTS We developed a model of coping and adjustment for parents caring for a child with Dravet syndrome. The model includes contextual factors that impact on parents (loss and insufficient resource). We found a prominent theme of trauma and explored how parents responded to this trauma over time. All parents described a primary coping response reflecting the high levels of stress they had to contend with. Some parents were able to describe a secondary coping style that appeared to support healthier long-term coping and adjustment. SIGNIFICANCE The study provides novel insight into the ways in which parents cope and adjust to caring for a child with DS, with a focus on adapting to trauma. These insights provide the foundation for the creation of targeted therapeutic interventions for parents of children with developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs), which we outline and discuss.

Abstract
In this review paper, we explore the complex relationship between sleep duration and stroke risk, outlining the association of both insufficient sleep and excessive sleep with an increased risk of cerebrovascular diseases. We explore a U-shaped relationship between sleep duration and cardiovascular outcomes, including stroke. Our review explores findings from cohort studies, meta-analyses, and Mendelian randomization studies, highlighting the nuanced findings and identifying gaps in the current literature. We discussed the direct and indirect effects of sleep duration on stroke risk, considering factors such as atherosclerosis, atrial fibrillation, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. We also discuss the methodological challenges inherent in current studies, such as the reliance on self-reported sleep measures and the need for more objective and comprehensive assessments. The paper emphasizes the importance of recognizing individual variations in optimal sleep duration and the potential confounding effects of sleep quality and other sleep-related disorders on stroke risk. Furthermore, we explore the potential mechanisms by which sleep duration may influence endothelial function, oxidative stress, and vascular compliance, suggesting areas for future investigation. The paper makes a compelling case for the inclusion of sleep duration as a key factor in stroke prevention strategies, recommending that healthcare professionals proactively assess and manage sleep patterns to mitigate stroke risk.

Abstract
Rapid-eye movement (REM) stage of sleep serves a critical role in processing cognitive and behavioral functions. Evidence shows that REM sleep deprivation (REM SD) strongly affects the mood state and cognitive abilities. However, there are many inconsistent reports. Although the exact molecular mechanisms underlying REM SD effects have not well been discovered, however, molecular factors including those affected synaptic plasticity and mood state may be involved. There are two important molecular factors that have not been well studied: synaptophysin and glycogen synthase kinase-3 beta (GSK-3beta). The present study aimed to investigate the role of synaptophysin and GSK-3beta in the modulation of memory and behavioral changes induced by REM SD and lithium (as a potent GSK-3beta inhibitor and mood stabilizer). Multiple platform apparatus was used to induce REM SD for 48 h. Lithium was injected at the dose of 50 mg/kg, intraperitoneal (i.p.). Locomotor activity, anxiety-like behavior, pain threshold, novel object recognition memory, and synaptophysin and GSK-3beta level in the prefrontal cortex were evaluated. Results showed REM SD increased locomotor activity, decreased pain threshold, impaired novel object recognition memory, decreased synaptophysin and increased GSK-3beta levels. Lithium reversed these effects. Anxiety-like behavior was unaffected. For the first time, the present study showed that GSK-3beta and synaptophysin may be involved in the modulation of behavior and cognition induced by REM SD and lithium. In conclusion, we suggested that GSK-3beta upregulation and synaptophysin downregulation may underlie the deleterious effects of REM SD, while lithium may counteract REM SD effects via restoring the level of both.

Abstract
Adolescence is a pivotal stage during development when one's personality, emotion, and behavioral traits are shaped to a great extent, and the underlying neural circuits undergo substantial developmental organizations. Dramatic and dynamic changes occur in sleep architecture throughout the postnatal developmental course. Insufficient sleep and disruption of sleep/wake coherence are prevalent among the adolescents worldwide, and even so in young patients with neuropsychiatric conditions. Although accumulating evidence has suggested a tight association between sleep disruption and depression/anxiety, the causal relationship remains largely unclear. More importantly, most of these studies focused on adult subjects, and little is known about the role of sleep during the development of mood and behavior. Here we review recent studies investigating the acute and chronic effects of adolescent sleep disruption on depression and anxiety both in humans and rodent models with focuses on the assessment methodology and age. By discussing the findings and unsolved problems, we hope to achieve a better understanding of the relationship between sleep and mental health in adolescents and provide insights for future research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Supporting the sleep health of surrogate decision-makers of patients in the intensive care unit is a research priority. However, few studies have approached sleep health as a multidimensional construct, instead focusing on 1 or 2 dimensions in isolation. OBJECTIVE To holistically examine the sleep health (satisfaction, timing, efficiency, duration) of surrogate decision-makers of critically ill patients. METHODS This secondary analysis involved surrogate decision-makers of incapacitated intensive care unit patients at a tertiary medical center in northeastern Ohio (n = 19). Sleep-health data were captured by means of a subjective scale (satisfaction) and objectively (timing, efficiency, duration) by means of a wrist-worn accelerometer (Actiwatch Spectrum Plus; Philips Respironics). Upon enrollment, participants completed the satisfaction scale and wore the Actiwatch Spectrum Plus for 3 consecutive days. Descriptive statistics of the study variables were evaluated. RESULTS A minority (15%) of the sample reported poor sleep satisfaction. Sleep timing variables were comparable to those found in other adult studies. Participants averaged approximately 6 hours of sleep per day with an average sleep efficiency of 83.7%. CONCLUSIONS Despite adequate satisfaction scores, intensive care unit surrogate decision-makers' sleep duration is inadequate and sleep efficiency is suboptimal. Sleep-health interventions may be needed in this at-risk population. Future research should consider the impact of surrogate decision-maker sleep health on their capacity to serve in the surrogate decision-maker role.

Abstract
Sleep disruptions are commonly reported during and after cancer. In addition to its immediate relevance for patients' immunity and response to treatment, poor sleep can also affect their psychological health and, ultimately, quality of life. Sleep disturbances can also affect caregivers who are supporting cancer patients, adding to their burden. Therefore, it is important for both patients and their families to receive personalized advice and assistance to improve sleep quality. Research has demonstrated that providing intervention for sleep difficulties early in the care trajectory of cancer patients can enhance satisfaction with care and reduce depression. In this article, we will outline basic practical tips that oncology nurses can offer to patients experiencing sleep difficulties, ranging from basic sleep hygiene practices to rearranging their bedroom environment for better rest.

Abstract
Saliva is crucial in maintaining oral health; its composition reflects the body's physiological and diseased state. Among salivary components, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) stand out for their broad antimicrobial activities and role in modulating the oral microbiota and innate immune response. Local and systemic diseases can affect the levels of AMPs in saliva, making them attractive biomarkers. However, the large variability in their concentrations hampers their use in diagnostics. Knowledge of the various factors influencing the profile of salivary AMPs is essential for their use as biomarkers. Here, we examine how lifestyle factors such as physical activity, dietary supplementation, tobacco smoking, and psychological stress impact salivary AMP levels. By understanding these sources of variability, we can take a step forward in using AMPs for diagnostics and prognostics and develop new tailored and preventative approaches.

Abstract
Melasma is a benign but emotionally distressing skin condition that reduces patients' quality of life, with prevalence rates during pregnancy ranging from 36.4% to 75%. Troublingly, up to 30% of cases are reported to persist after delivery, even ten years later. And recurrence and aggravation are common in subsequent pregnancies. This review examines the risk factors and mechanisms associated with melasma during pregnancy and summarized corresponding preventive strategies. We emphasize the critical role of photoprotection, including the use of sunscreens from the first trimester, in reducing the incidence of melasma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To synthesise the literature examining the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and cortisol responses to an acute stressor following total sleep deprivation (TSD) in healthy adult subjects. METHODS We conducted a systematic review (CRD42022293857) following the latest PRISMA statement. We searched Medline (via Ovid), Embase (via Ovid), PsycINFO (via Ovid), CINAHL complete and Scopus databases, without year restriction, using search terms related to "sleep deprivation", "stress", "autonomic nervous system" and "cortisol". Two independent team members used pre-defined inclusion/exclusion criteria to assess eligibility and extract data. We used RoB 2 to assess the risk of bias in randomised controlled trials, and ROBINS-I for non-randomised studies. RESULTS Sixteen studies, with 581 participants (mean age = 29 ± 12 years), were eligible for inclusion in the descriptive syntheses. Half of the studies (n = 8) were conducted in the United States of America. The most commonly used study designs were randomised crossover studies (n = 7) and randomised controlled trials (n = 5). Most studies used a single night of TSD (n = 13) which was followed by a psychological (n = 6), physical (n = 5) or psychological and physical (n = 5) acute stressor event. Heart rate (n = 8), cortisol (n = 7) and blood pressure (n =6) were the most reported outcomes, while only a single study used forearm vascular conductance and forearm blood flow. Ten studies found that TSD changed, at least, one marker of ANS or cortisol response. TSD compared with a sleep control condition increased cortisol level (n=1), systolic blood pressure (n=3), diastolic blood pressure (n=2), mean arterial pressure (n=1), and electrodermal activity (n=1) after acute stress. Also, compared with a sleep control, TSD blunted cortisol (n=2), heart rate (n=1) and systolic blood pressure (n=2) responses after acute stress. However, TSD did not change ANS or cortisol responses to acute stressors in 73 % of the total reported outcomes. Furthermore, 10 RCT studies (62.5 %) were assigned as "some concerns" and two RCT studies (12.5 %) were attributed "high" risk of bias. Additionally, one non-randomised trial was classified as "moderate" and three non-randomised trials as "serious" risk of bias. CONCLUSION The markers of ANS and cortisol responses to acute stress after TSD in healthy individuals reveal a scarcity of consistent evidence. The included studies present enough evidence that TSD induces either blunted or exaggerated ANS or cortisol responses to laboratory stresses supporting the "bidirectional multi-system reactivity hypothesis.". It appears that a comprehensive understanding of this phenomenon still lacks robust evidence, and further research is needed to clarify these relationships.

Abstract
Discrimination is a salient stressor linked with a variety of health outcomes including depression and anxiety among Middle Eastern and North African Americans (MENA). Among other minoritized racial and ethnic groups, sleep difficulties have been identified as potential mechanisms that explain the relationship between discrimination and mental health. However, this has not been explored within MENA samples. Thus, the focus of this study is to examine if two sleep measures (e.g., sleep disturbance and sleep-related impairment) mediate the relationship between discrimination and two mental health outcomes: depression and anxiety. We recruited 126 MENA adults from across the USA through Prolific. Findings revealed that sleep-related impairment fully mediated the relationship between discrimination and mental health outcomes, whereas sleep disturbances only partially mediated these outcomes. Results suggest sleep difficulties are one pathway that could explain the relationship between discrimination and mental health among MENA. Future work should continue to explore this relationship, as well as investigate discrimination and sleep as possible places of intervention to protect the health of MENA individuals.

Abstract
(1) Background: Insomnia is a neurological illness that poses a significant threat to both physical and mental health. It results in the activation of neuroglial cells, heightened neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and disruptions in the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis. Ligusticum Chuanxiong (CX) and Finger citron (FC) are frequently utilized botanicals for addressing sleeplessness. Both herbs possess notable anti-inflammatory properties in their volatile oils. However, their effectiveness is hindered by the nasal mucosal irritation and instability they exhibit. (2) Methods: This study involved the preparation of a nanofiber composite system using carbon nanofiber (CNF) suspensions containing essential oils of Ligusticum chuanxiong-Finger citron (CXEO-FCEO-CNF). The effects and mechanisms of these essential oils in improving insomnia were investigated using an insomnia mouse model after encapsulation. (3) Results: The CXEO-FCEO-CNF had an average particle size of 103.19 ± 1.64 nm. The encapsulation rates of essential oils of Ligusticum chuanxiong (CXEO) and essential oils of Finger citron (FCEO) were 44.50% and 46.15%, respectively. This resulted in a considerable improvement in the stability of the essential oils over a period of 30 days. The essential oils effectively decreased the irritation of the nasal mucosa following encapsulation. Furthermore, CXEO-FCEO-CNF enhanced voluntary activity and sleep in mice with insomnia, notably boosted the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), reduced the concentration of lipoxidized malondialdehyde (MDA), decreased the levels of hormones associated with the HPA axis, and regulated the levels of neurotransmitters, resulting in a beneficial therapeutic outcome. CXEO-FCEO-CNF contains a total of 23 active ingredients, such as alpha-Asarone, (E)-methyl isoeugenol, and Senkyunolide. These ingredients primarily work by modulating the Janus kinase-signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK-STAT) signaling system to decrease oxidative stress and inflammatory reactions. (4) Conclusions: This study presented initial evidence that the combination of CXEO and FCEO in nanofiber formulations effectively reduces the nasal mucosal irritation and instability of essential oils. Furthermore, it demonstrated the potential anti-neuroinflammatory and therapeutic effects of these formulations in treating insomnia. Overall, this study provides a theoretical foundation for developing new essential oil formulations derived from herbs.

Abstract
Acute sleep deprivation has aroused widespread concern and the relationship between acute sleep deprivation and cortisol levels is inconsistent. This study aimed to explore additional evidence and details. The PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, CLINAHL and Cochrane databases were searched for eligible studies published up to June 7, 2023. All analyses were performed using Review Manager 5.4 and Stata/SE 14.0. A total of 24 studies contributed to this meta-analysis. There was no significant difference in cortisol levels between participants with acute sleep deprivation and normal sleep in 21 crossover-designed studies (SMD = 0.18; 95% CI: -0.11, 0.45; p = 0.208) or 3 RCTs (SMD = 0.26; 95% CI: -0.22, 0.73; p = 0.286). Subgroup analysis revealed that the pooled effects were significant for studies using serum as the sample (SMD = 0.46; 95%CI: 0.11, 0.81; p = 0.011). Studies reporting cortisol levels in the morning, in the afternoon and in the evening did not show significant difference (p > 0.05). The pooled effects were statistically significant for studies with multiple measurements (SMD = 0.28; 95%CI: 0.03, 0.53; p = 0.027) but not for studies with single cortisol assessments (p = 0.777). When the serum was used as the test sample, the cortisol levels of individuals after acute sleep deprivation were higher than those with normal sleep.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Children's exposure to chronic stress is associated with several health problems. Measuring hair cortisol concentration is particularly useful for studying chronic stress but much is unknown about hair cortisol determinants in children and adolescents, and previous research has often not considered the simultaneous exposure of multiple variables. This research is focused on investigating the relationship between environmental, social and individual factors with hair cortisol concentration in children. METHODS The data used in this study are from the INMA prospective epidemiological cohort study. The assessment of chronic stress was made on the basis of hair samples taken at the age of 11 years in the INMA-Gipuzkoa cohort (n = 346). A metamodel summarizing the hypothesized relationships among environmental, social and individual factors and hair cortisol concentration was constructed based on previous literature. Structural Equation Modelling was performed to examine the relationships among the variables. RESULTS In the general model higher behavioural problems were associated with higher cortisol levels and an inverse relationship between environmental noise and cortisol levels was observed, explaining 5 % of the variance in HCC. Once stratified by sex these associations were only hold in boys, while no significant effect of any of the study variables was related with cortisol levels in girls. Importantly, maternal stress was positively related to behavioural difficulties in children. Finally, higher traffic-related air pollution and lower exposure to neighborhood greenness were related to higher environmental noise. DISCUSSION This study highlights that simultaneous exposure to different environmental, social and individual characteristics may determine the concentration of hair cortisol. More research is needed and future studies should include this complex view to better understanding of hair cortisol determinants in children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the day-to-day associations between minority stressors (i.e., anticipated and experienced discrimination) and sleep health outcomes (i.e., total sleep time (TST), sleep disturbances, and sleep-related impairment) among sexual and gender minority (SGM) people of color. METHOD An online sample of SGM people of color living in the United States participated in a 30-day daily diary study. Daily anticipated and experienced discrimination as well as subjective sleep outcomes were assessed via electronic diaries using validated measures. Wrist-worn actigraphy was used to objectively assess TST. Multilevel linear models (MLMs) were used to estimate the independent associations of daily intersectional minority stressors with subsequent sleep outcomes, adjusted for demographic factors and lifetime discrimination. RESULTS The sample included 43 SGM people of color with a mean age of 27.0 years (± 7.7) of which 84% were Latinx, 47% were multiracial, and 37% were bisexual. Results of MLMs indicated that greater report of daily experienced discrimination was positively associated with same-night sleep disturbances, B (SE) = 0.45 (0.10), p < .001. Daily anticipated discrimination was positively associated with sleep-related impairment on the following day, B (SE) = 0.77 (0.17), p < .001. However, daily anticipated and experienced discrimination were not associated with same-night TST. CONCLUSIONS Findings highlight the importance of considering the differential effects of daily intersectional minority stressors on the sleep health of SGM people of color. Further research is needed to identify factors driving the link between daily minority stressors and sleep outcomes to inform sleep health interventions tailored to this population. Abstract
BACKGROUND Support interventions often address both self-care and coping. Different approaches are used to promote self-care and coping so clarifying the intervention effect can guide clinicians and researchers to provide interventions that achieve benefit. PURPOSE To compare two models to determine whether self-care improves coping or coping improves self-care. METHODS We used cross-sectional data from 248 caregivers obtained at enrollment into a randomized controlled trial testing the efficacy of a support intervention. Factor scores for scales measuring caregiver demand, self-care, coping, stress appraisal, and mental health were derived from exploratory factor analysis. Structural equation models were analyzed using the factor scores as estimates of each construct. To control possible spurious effects caregiver age, gender, relationship with the patient, and income adequacy were included. RESULTS Both models were compatible with the data, but the self-care model was stronger than the coping model. That model had a non-significant chi square and an excellent fit to the data, χ2(4, N = 248) = 2.64, p = .62. The percentage of variance explained by the self-care model was 54 % for mental health, 42 % for stress appraisal, 10 % for avoidance coping, and 6 % for active coping. In the coping model the explained variance of stress appraisal dropped to 33 %, avoidance coping dropped to 0 %, and active coping dropped to 3 %. CONCLUSIONS The self-care model was strongest, illustrating that self-care decreases stress, promotes coping, and improves mental health. These results suggest that promoting self-care may be more effective in improving mental health than interventions aimed at improving coping.

Abstract
(1) Background. The post-COVID-19 era has imposed unique challenges on educators, significantly impacting their psychological and physical well-being. This study examines the interrelationships among psychological stress, sleep quality, and somatization in a sample of teachers, elucidating the impact of these factors during the ongoing recovery from the pandemic. (2) Methods. Using validated instruments such as the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Mesure du Stress Psychologique (MSP), this research investigates how stress and sleep disturbances correlate with somatization among teachers. The study also considers the influence of demographic factors such as age, gender, and years of experience. (3) Results. The results indicated that sleep quality significantly correlates with both psychological stress and somatic pain, emphasizing the crucial role of sleep in managing stress-induced physical symptoms. Additionally, the fear of COVID-19 significantly exacerbates these effects, illustrating the complex interplay of psychological and physical health factors during the pandemic. Contrary to initial hypotheses, demographic factors such as gender, age, and years of experience did not significantly influence these primary relationships. (4) Conclusions. The findings emphasize the necessity of addressing both psychological stress and sleep quality to mitigate their combined effects on somatization. Educational institutions and policymakers are urged to develop targeted interventions that address these issues to support teachers' health and well-being in a post-pandemic landscape.

Abstract
Objective Poor sleep among young adults is prevalent, yet the mediating variables are largely understudied, and there is limited relevant work utilizing objective sleep measures. The present study investigated the mediating effects of perceived stress and rumination in the relationship between trait mindfulness and subjective and objective sleep quality in young adults. Methods A total of 170 healthy adults (aged 18-37, M = 20.8, SD = 2.9) self-reported on trait mindfulness, perceived stress, and rumination. The primary (N = 140) and secondary (N = 30) samples both completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess subjective sleep quality. The secondary sample (N = 30) additionally provided sleep diaries, as well as wrist-worn actigraphy data for assessing objective sleep quality. A mediation analysis was conducted to assess the effect of trait mindfulness on sleep quality with perceived stress and rumination as mediators. Results Trait mindfulness was positively associated with better subjective sleep quality; this was fully mediated by perceived stress, b = -0.08, 95% CI [-.12, -0.06]. Rumination was negatively associated with subjective sleep quality but did not mediate the relationship between trait mindfulness and sleep quality, b = -0.01, 95% CI [-.03, 0.02]. Only trait mindfulness was correlated with diary-based sleep ratings, and none of the measures were associated with actigraphy-based sleep quality. Conclusion This study indicates that perceived stress is an important mediator in the relationship between trait mindfulness and subjective sleep quality among young adults, rather than rumination. These findings have implications for mindfulness-based therapeutic approaches to address the high prevalence of sleep disorders among young adults, adding mechanistic detail to the literature.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Military personnel train and operate in challenging multistressor environments, which can affect hormonal levels, and subsequently compromise performance and recovery. The aims of this project were to evaluate concentrations of cortisol and testosterone and subjective perceptions of stress and recovery across basic military training (BMT). METHODS 32 male recruits undergoing BMT were tracked over a 12-week course. Saliva samples were collected weekly, on waking, 30 min postwaking and bedtime. Perceptions of stress and recovery were collected weekly. Daily physical activity (steps) were measured via wrist-mounted accelerometers across BMT. Physical fitness was assessed via the multistage fitness test and push-ups in weeks 2 and 8. RESULTS Concentrations of testosterone and cortisol, and the testosterone:cortisol ratio changed significantly across BMT, with variations in responses concurrent with programmatic demands. Perceptions of stress and recovery also fluctuated according to training elements. Recruits averaged 17 027 steps per day between weeks 2 and 12, with week-to-week variations. On average, recruits significantly increased predicted VO2max (3.6 (95% CI 1.0 to 6.1) mL/kg/min) and push-ups (5. 5 (95% CI 1.4 to 9.7) repetitions) between weeks 2 and 8. CONCLUSIONS Recruit stress responses oscillated over BMT in line with programmatic demands indicating that BMT was, at a group level, well-tolerated with no signs of enduring physiological strain or overtraining. The sensitivity of cortisol, testosterone and the testosterone:cortisol ratio to the stressors of military training, suggest they may have a role in monitoring physiological strain in military personnel. Subjective measures may also have utility within a monitoring framework to help ensure adaptive, rather than maladaptive (eg, injury, attrition), outcomes in military recruits.

Abstract
This study investigated the role of O-GlcNAc cycling in Alzheimer's disease-related changes in brain pathophysiology induced by chronic REM sleep deprivation (CSD) in mice. CSD increased amyloid beta (Aβ) and p-Tau accumulation and impaired learning and memory (L/M) function. CSD decreased dendritic length and spine density. CSD also increased the intensity of postsynaptic density protein-95 (PSD-95) staining. All of these Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenic changes were effectively reversed through glucosamine (GlcN) treatment by enhancing O-GlcNAcylation. Interestingly, the lelvel of O-GlcNAcylated-Tau (O-Tau) exhibited an opposite trend compared to p-Tau, as it was elevated by CSD and suppressed by GlcN treatment. CSD increased neuroinflammation, as indicated by elevated levels of glial fibrillary acidic protein and IBA-1-positive glial cells in the brain, which were suppressed by GlcN treatment. CSD promoted the phosphorylation of GSK3β and led to an upregulation in the expression of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress regulatory proteins and genes. These alterations were effectively suppressed by GlcN treatment. Minocycline not only suppressed neuroinflammation induced by CSD, but it also rescued the decrease in O-GlcNAc levels caused by CSD. Minocycline also reduced AD neuropathy without affecting CSD-induced ER stress. Notably, overexpressing O-GlcNAc transferase in the dentate gyrus region of the mouse brain rescued CSD-induced cognitive dysfunction, neuropathy, neuroinflammation, and ER stress responses. Collectively, our findings reveal that dysregulation of O-GlcNAc cycling underlies CSD-induced AD pathology and demonstrate that restoration of OGlcNAcylation protects against CSD-induced neurodegeneration.

Abstract
Bestrophin-1 and anoctamin-1 are members of the calcium-activated chloride channels (CaCCs) family and are involved in inflammatory and neuropathic pain. However, their role in pain hypersensitivity induced by REM sleep deprivation (REMSD) has not been studied. This study aimed to determine if anoctamin-1 and bestrophin-1 are involved in the pain hypersensitivity induced by REMSD. We used the multiple-platform method to induce REMSD. REM sleep deprivation for 48 h induced tactile allodynia and a transient increase in corticosterone concentration at the beginning of the protocol (12 h) in female and male rats. REMSD enhanced c-Fos and α2δ-1 protein expression but did not change activating transcription factor 3 (ATF3) and KCC2 expression in dorsal root ganglia and dorsal spinal cord. Intrathecal injection of CaCCinh-A01, a non-selective bestrophin-1 blocker, and T16Ainh-A01, a specific anoctamin-1 blocker, reverted REMSD-induced tactile allodynia. However, T16Ainh-A01 had a higher antiallodynic effect in male than female rats. In addition, REMSD increased bestrophin-1 protein expression in DRG but not in DSC in male and female rats. In marked contrast, REMSD decreased anoctamin-1 protein expression in DSC but not in DRG, only in female rats. Bestrophin-1 and anoctamin-1 promote pain and maintain tactile allodynia induced by REM sleep deprivation in both male and female rats, but their expression patterns differ between the sexes.

Abstract
Evidence on the importance of rapid-eye-movement sleep (REMS) in processing emotions is accumulating. The focus of this systematic review is the outcomes of experimental REMS deprivation (REMSD), which is the most common method in animal models and human studies on REMSD. This review revealed that variations in the applied REMSD methods were substantial. Animal models used longer deprivation protocols compared with studies in humans, which mostly reported acute deprivation effects after one night. Studies on animal models showed that REMSD causes aggressive behavior, increased pain sensitivity, reduced sexual behavior, and compromised consolidation of fear memories. Animal models also revealed that REMSD during critical developmental periods elicits lasting consequences on affective-related behavior. The few human studies revealed increases in pain sensitivity and suggest stronger consolidation of emotional memories after REMSD. As pharmacological interventions (such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors [SSRIs]) may suppress REMS for long periods, there is a clear gap in knowledge regarding the effects and mechanisms of chronic REMS suppression in humans.

Abstract
The association between sleep and the immune-endocrine system is well recognized, but the nature of that relationship is not well understood. Sleep fragmentation induces a pro-inflammatory response in peripheral tissues and brain, but it also activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, releasing glucocorticoids (GCs) (cortisol in humans and corticosterone in mice). It is unclear whether this rapid release of glucocorticoids acts to potentiate or dampen the inflammatory response in the short term. The purpose of this study was to determine whether blocking or suppressing glucocorticoid activity will affect the inflammatory response from acute sleep fragmentation (ASF). Male C57BL/6J mice were injected i.p. with either 0.9% NaCl (vehicle 1), metyrapone (a glucocorticoid synthesis inhibitor, dissolved in vehicle 1), 2% ethanol in polyethylene glycol (vehicle 2), or mifepristone (a glucocorticoid receptor antagonist, dissolved in vehicle 2) 10 min before the start of ASF or no sleep fragmentation (NSF). After 24 h, samples were collected from brain (prefrontal cortex, hypothalamus, hippocampus) and periphery (liver, spleen, heart, and epididymal white adipose tissue (EWAT)). Proinflammatory gene expression (TNF-α and IL-1β) was measured, followed by gene expression analysis. Metyrapone treatment affected pro-inflammatory cytokine gene expression during ASF in some peripheral tissues, but not in the brain. More specifically, metyrapone treatment suppressed IL-1β expression in EWAT during ASF, which implies a pro-inflammatory effect of GCs. However, in cardiac tissue, metyrapone treatment increased TNF-α expression in ASF mice, suggesting an anti-inflammatory effect of GCs. Mifepristone treatment yielded more significant results than metyrapone, reducing TNF-α expression in liver (only NSF mice) and cardiac tissue during ASF, indicating a pro-inflammatory role. Conversely, in the spleen of ASF-mice, mifepristone increased pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-1β), demonstrating an anti-inflammatory role. Furthermore, irrespective of sleep fragmentation, mifepristone increased pro-inflammatory cytokine gene expression in heart (IL-1β), pre-frontal cortex (IL-1β), and hypothalamus (IL-1β). The results provide mixed evidence for pro- and anti-inflammatory functions of corticosterone to regulate inflammatory responses to acute sleep loss.

Abstract
Living organisms synchronize their biological activities with the earth's rotation through the circadian clock, a molecular mechanism that regulates biology and behavior daily. This synchronization factually maximizes positive activities (e.g., social interactions, feeding) during safe periods, and minimizes exposure to dangers (e.g., predation, darkness) typically at night. Beyond basic circadian regulation, some behaviors like sleep have an additional layer of homeostatic control, ensuring those essential activities are fulfilled. While sleep is predominantly governed by the circadian clock, a secondary homeostatic regulator, though not well-understood, ensures adherence to necessary sleep amounts and hints at a fundamental biological function of sleep beyond simple energy conservation and safety. Here we explore sleep regulation across seven Drosophila species with diverse ecological niches, revealing that while circadian-driven sleep aspects are consistent, homeostatic regulation varies significantly. The findings suggest that in Drosophilids, sleep evolved primarily for circadian purposes. The more complex, homeostatically regulated functions of sleep appear to have evolved independently in a species-specific manner, and are not universally conserved. This laboratory model may reproduce and recapitulate primordial sleep evolution.

Abstract
While the majority of studies have concluded that sleep deprivation causes detrimental effects on various cognitive processes, some studies reported conflicting results. We examined the effects of a 108-h total sleep deprivation (TSD) on working memory in the northern fur seal, an animal with unusual sleep phenomenology and long-range annual migrations. The performance of fur seals was evaluated in a two-choice visual delayed matching to sample (DMTS) task, which is commonly used to evaluate working memory. In baseline conditions, the performance of fur seals in a DMTS task based on the percentage of errors was somewhat comparable with that in nonhuman primates at similar delays. We have determined that a 108-h TSD did not affect fur seals' performance in a visual DMTS task as measured by overall percentage of errors and response latencies. On the contrary, all fur seals improved task performance over the study, including the baseline, TSD and recovery conditions. In addition, TSD did not change the direction and strength of the pattern of behavioral lateralization in fur seals. We conclude that a 108-h TSD did not interfere with working memory in a DMTS test in northern fur seals.

Abstract
Sleep deprivation (SD) has a wide range of adverse health effects. However, the mechanisms by which SD influences corneal pathophysiology and its post-wound healing remain unclear. This study aimed to examine the basic physiological characteristics of the cornea in mice subjected to SD and determine the pathophysiological response to injury after corneal abrasion. Using a multi-platform water environment method as an SD model, we found that SD leads to disturbances of corneal proliferative, sensory, and immune homeostasis as well as excessive inflammatory response and delayed repair after corneal abrasion by inducing hyperactivation of the sympathetic nervous system and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Pathophysiological changes in the cornea mainly occurred through the activation of the IL-17 signaling pathway. Blocking both adrenergic and glucocorticoid synthesis and locally neutralizing IL-17A significantly improved corneal homeostasis and the excessive inflammatory response and delay in wound repair following corneal injury in SD-treated mice. These results indicate that optimal sleep quality is essential for the physiological homeostasis of the cornea and its well-established repair process after injury. Additionally, these observations provide potential therapeutic targets to ameliorate SD-induced delays in corneal wound repair by inhibiting or blocking the activation of the stress system and its associated IL-17 signaling pathway.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the association between changes in self-reported neighborhood stressors and sleep quality and determine whether this varied by sociocultural context among Puerto Rican young adults. METHODS Data come from the Boricua Youth Study Health Assessment, a sample of Puerto Rican young adults from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and South Bronx, New York (n = 818; mean age=22.9years). Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Neighborhood social stressors (disorder, social cohesion, and safety) were parent-reported in childhood and self-reported in young adulthood and categorized into: low in childhood/young adulthood (reference group), high in childhood/low in young adulthood, low in childhood/high in young adulthood, and high in childhood/young adulthood. Sociocultural context was based on participant residence during childhood (San Juan vs. South Bronx). RESULTS Adjusting for sociodemographic factors, living with high neighborhood stressors in both childhood and young adulthood (prevalence ratios=1.30, 95% CI: 1.01, 1.66) was associated with overall poor sleep (PSQI score >5). Among PSQI components, living with high neighborhood stressors in young adulthood only or in both time periods was associated with worse subjective sleep quality and daytime dysfunction. Additionally, there were various associations between the neighborhood stressor measures and PSQI components. Results did not differ by sociocultural context. CONCLUSION Findings suggest that living with high levels of neighborhood stressors during childhood and young adulthood may have a cumulative adverse impact on sleep quality in young adulthood.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a novel dietary supplement, including melatonin and magnesium, delivered via coffee pods on sleep quality, resting metabolic rate (RMR), and body composition in individuals with poor sleep quality disturbances. Using a double-blinded, randomized, crossover trial, we recruited 35 participants to a 4-week intervention with both supplements (1.9 mg melatonin + 200 mg elemental magnesium before sleep) and placebo conditions, considering a 7d washout period between treatments. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire was applied, RMR (kcal) was measured using indirect calorimetry (canopy ventilated open-circuit system) and body composition was assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Decreases in PSQI and anger - hostility scores, as well as in energy intake and fat mass, were observed (p < 0.05) for both conditions, from baseline to the end of each 4-week intervention. Differences between conditions were also observed for these parameters along with energy spent in activity, number of sedentary breaks, sleep efficiency, latency time, time in bed, total sleep time, awakening time, and movement index (p < 0.05) favouring the supplement condition. However, the final PSQI questionnaire scores still indicated poor sleep quality on average (PSQI > 5), in both conditions, with no changes regarding RMR. A melatonin-magnesium supplement, in a coffee pod format, showed improvements in sleep quality in otherwise healthy individuals with sleep disturbances, however PSQI questionnaire scores still indicated poor quality on average (PSQI > 5).

Abstract
Objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) is a valid method to evaluate medical students' competencies. The present cross-sectional study aimed at determining how students' coping and health-related behaviors are associated with their psychological well-being and performance on the day of the OSCE. Fourth-year medical students answered a set of standardized questionnaires assessing their coping (BCI) and health-related behaviors before the examination (sleep PSQI, physical activity GPAQ). Immediately before the OSCE, they reported their level of instant psychological well-being on multi-dimensional visual analogue scales. OSCE performance was assessed by examiners blinded to the study. Associations were explored using multivariable linear regression models. A total of 482 students were included. Instant psychological well-being was positively associated with the level of positive thinking and of physical activity. It was negatively associated with the level of avoidance and of sleep disturbance. Furthermore, performance was negatively associated with the level of avoidance. Positive thinking, good sleep quality, and higher level of physical activity were all associated with improved well-being before the OSCE. Conversely, avoidance coping behaviors seem to be detrimental to both well-being and OSCE performance. The recommendation is to pay special attention to students who engage in avoidance and to consider implementing stress management programs.Clinical trial: The study protocol was registered on clinicaltrial.gov NCT05393206, date of registration: 11 June 2022.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep disruption, particularly insomnia, is a notable characteristic of depression and is associated with an increased risk of suicide in patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD). Moreover, the pathophysiology of depression and suicide has been linked to inflammation, specifically proinflammatory cytokines. However, the complex interplay among these factors in individuals with MDD remains poorly understood. This study investigated the mediating role of inflammatory cytokines in the relationship between sleep disruption and suicidal ideation (SI), with a particular emphasis on gender differences. METHODS This study used a cross-sectional design in which 281 individuals diagnosed with MDD were recruited from psychiatric clinics. The main assessments included the evaluation of sleep disruption, inflammatory markers, and SI. The Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (SSI) scores was employed to quantify SI, whereas HAMD-SLD, a component of the Hamilton Rating Scale (HAMD-17), was used to evaluate sleep disruption. Blood analysis was performed to measure inflammatory markers. RESULT For females diagnosed with MDD, significant associations between sleep disruption and the levels of IL-6 (B = 0.994, p = 0.013) and TNF-α (B = 1.986, p = 0.016) were found when IL-6 or TNF-α were considered as mediators in the regression model. In addition, IL-6 (B = 5.689, p < 0.001) and TNF-α (B = 9.916, p = 0.006) exhibited strong correlation with SSI scores. CONCLUSIONS The primary results of this study indicate that IL-6 and TNF-α could function as potential mediators in the relationship between sleep disruption and SI among female patients diagnosed with MDD. Abstract
Structural neuroplasticity (changes in the size, strength, number, and targets of synaptic connections) can be modified by sleep and sleep disruption. However, the causal relationships between genetic perturbations, sleep loss, neuroplasticity, and behavior remain unclear. The C. elegans GABAergic DVB neuron undergoes structural plasticity in adult males in response to adolescent stress, which rewires synaptic connections, alters behavior, and is dependent on conserved autism-associated genes NRXN1/nrx-1 and NLGN3/nlg-1. We find that four methods of sleep deprivation transiently induce DVB neurite extension in day 1 adults and increase the time to spicule protraction, which is the functional and behavioral output of the DVB neuron. Loss of nrx-1 and nlg-1 prevent DVB structural plasticity and behavioral changes at day 1 caused by adolescent sleep loss. Therefore, nrx-1 and nlg-1 mediate the morphologic and behavioral consequences of sleep loss, providing insight into the relationship between sleep, neuroplasticity, behavior, and neurologic disease.

Abstract
U.S. racial and ethnic minoritized groups face disproportionate cancer burdens compared to White Americans. Investigating modifiable factors, such as sleep, that are socially patterned and inequitably distributed by race and ethnicity may advance understanding of cancer disparities and provide intervention opportunities. Emerging data suggest poor sleep health is associated with cancer. Yet, its contribution to racial and ethnic cancer disparities is understudied. In this narrative review, we explored the sleep-cancer relation through a disparities lens. We (i) summarized literature reporting on associations between sleep and cancer among racial and ethnic minority populations; (ii) examined potential sleep-cancer mechanisms; and (iii) discussed future directions. We identified five studies reporting on sleep-cancer associations among minoritized groups. Poor sleep health was associated with aggressive breast cancer among Black women, increased breast cancer risk among Asian women, and increased risk of breast and total cancer among Hispanic/Latinx Americans. Sleep and cancer disparities have similar socioeconomic and behavioral determinants, suggesting racial and ethnic minoritized groups may be vulnerable to poor sleep health and its adverse health impacts. Evidence indicates that the sleep-cancer disparities relation is an emerging, but important area of research that warrants further investigation, as sleep may be an avenue for reducing cancer disparities.
