Abstract
PURPOSE To determine whether the number of functional teeth, including the remaining natural teeth and prosthetically restored missing teeth, is associated with the dietary inflammatory index (DII), a quantitative measure of the inflammatory potential of the overall diet, in middle-aged and older Japanese adults. METHODS National survey data from a non-institutionalized Japanese population aged ≥45 years was analyzed. Multivariable linear regression analyses were performed to assess the association between the DII score, which was calculated based on dietary records, and the number of functional teeth, which was determined during dental examination. All regression analyses were stratified according to the age groups 45-64, 65-74, and ≥75 years. The association between functional tooth units (FTUs) and the DII was assessed using sensitivity analysis. RESULTS In total, 2407 individuals (1053 men and 1354 women; mean age = 66.7 years) were included. Multivariable analysis revealed that the number of functional teeth was significantly inversely associated with the DII score among participants aged ≥75 years (regression coefficient per increase of one in the number of functional teeth = -0.050; 95% confidence interval = -0.089 to -0.010). The number of functional teeth was not associated with the DII score in younger age categories (i.e., those aged 45-74 years). As in the primary analysis, the number of FTUs was significantly inversely associated with the DII score only in the group aged ≥75 years. CONCLUSIONS A greater number of functional teeth was associated with a lower DII (i.e., diet with greater anti-inflammatory potential) in Japanese adults aged ≥75 years.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tooth loss is associated with suboptimal nutrient intake and greater risk of malnutrition. OBJECTIVE To develop and field-test a stakeholder-informed diet education tool that addresses the unique needs of older adults with tooth loss who do not wear dentures. METHODS An iterative user-centered approach was used. Initial content was developed based on findings from previous research. Stakeholder panels of older adults with 20 or fewer teeth, and dentists, were conducted at two time points to obtain feedback on the tool, which was revised following each panel. The tool was field-tested in a dental school clinic and evaluated using the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool; it was further revised based on feedback. RESULTS A diet education tool entitled "Eating Healthier With Tooth Loss" was developed. Sections for fruits and vegetables, grains, and proteins food groups, and one addressing socioemotional aspects of eating with missing teeth were included. Panel members provided constructive, positive feedback; recommendations for editing text, images, design, and content were integrated. Field-testing in the dental clinic with 27 pairs of student dentists and their patients resulted in scores of 95.7% for understandability and 96.6% for actionability, with over 85% agreement with each item. The tool was revised based on field-testing feedback. CONCLUSION A diet education tool for older adults with tooth loss was developed using a user-centered approach, integrating the 'patient voice' and patient experiences with US dietary guidelines. Use of this tool is feasible in a dental clinic setting. Future research should explore usage in larger settings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adequate muscle activity is important for the success of oral rehabilitation: it maintains the integrity of the stomatognathic system and is responsible for chewing movements needed to break, crush and grind food. OBJECTIVE To compare muscle activity using electromyography (EMG) while clenching or chewing soft and/or hard foods among individuals with natural dentition (ND) and edentulous patients rehabilitated with dental prostheses. METHODS This review was conducted until March, 2023, and the research question was "Is the muscle activity of edentulous patients rehabilitated with dental prostheses similar to that of dentate individuals?" A search strategy was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Lilacs, Embase and manual journal searches. RESULTS Ten studies were included in the analysis. Most of them reported that individuals with ND had significant higher muscle activity (clenching or chewing) than complete dentures (CD) users. However, no difference was observed between patients with full mouth implant-supported fixed dental prosthesis (ISFDP) and ND. Additionally, two studies compared patients with mandibular ISFDP with maxillary CD and individuals with ND and found no differences; however, one study concluded that patients with ISFDP with CD (maxillary or mandibular) had lower muscle activity than individuals with ND. Only one study reported a higher muscle activity in patients with full-mouth ISFDP than in individuals with ND. CONCLUSIONS Bimaxillary CD users had lower muscle activity than individuals with ND. During rehabilitation, the muscle activity of patients with full-mouth ISFDP and mandibular ISFDP with maxillary CD is similar to individuals with ND.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Elderly people frequently report tooth loss, affecting their nutritional status. There is a gap in the scientific evidence about the influence of prosthodontic rehabilitation on nutritional status. OBJECTIVE To investigate the influence of prosthodontic rehabilitation combinates or not with dietary advice on nutritional status in elderly patients. METHODS A systematic literature search was conducted in three electronic databases to identify randomized clinical trials that evaluated the effect of prosthetic rehabilitation on nutritional status in subjects aged 60 years or older, with a follow-up of at least 1 month after prosthesis rehabilitation. RESULTS Of the 1517 articles identified in the initial search, 12 were selected for the final review. No significant difference between the types of prosthesis were found regarding the chewing by the elderly population. Although patients who received prosthetic treatment had significant improvement in chewing ability, a consistent pattern of improvement in nutritional status was not observed when they did not receive dietary advice. In addition, the association between the condition of the dentition, the masticatory performance and nutritional change of elderly patients has been found. Studies that evaluated simultaneous complete denture treatment and simple dietary advice showed an improvement of nutrient intake in elderly patients. CONCLUSIONS Isolated prosthetic rehabilitation may not have the effect of exerting a change in nutritional status of edentulous elderly patients. In general, simultaneous dietary consulting and prosthetic treatment in combination may improve dietary habits, since masticatory capacity and efficiency are not the only factors that influence the nutritional status of a patient.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between tooth loss severity and core and non-core food consumption in the older Brazilian population. METHODS We analysed data from 20 756 people aged 60 years or older who participated in the 2019 Brazilian National Health Survey. The average consumption days a week of core (8-item) and non-core (4-item) foods were the outcomes, measured using a Food Frequency Questionnaire. Tooth loss severity was the main exposure, using a four-category ordinal variable: mild (1-12 teeth missing), moderate (13-22), severe (23-31) and edentulous (all 32). Sociodemographic, tobacco smoking, use of dental prosthesis, difficulty in chewing and systemic conditions were among the covariates. Linear regression models estimated the association between tooth loss and food consumption. RESULTS Almost two-thirds of participants had moderate or worse levels of tooth loss. Older adults with more severe tooth loss reported an overall lower consumption of core and higher non-core foods than those with mild tooth loss. Worse tooth loss severity was associated with lower consumption of vegetables and/or legumes and fruits, and higher consumption of beans, artificial fruit juices and confectionery. CONCLUSIONS Older Brazilian adults with more severe tooth loss are consuming lower core and higher non-core foods. Our findings reinforce the importance of the common risk factor approach to tackle the adverse effects of tooth loss on diet.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aimed to determine the relationship between dentition, mastication, salivation and nutritional intake in 90-year-old Japanese people. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 84 participants (39 men and 45 women) aged 90 years. We used questionnaires to collect demographic information, smoking status, nutritional intake and higher-level functional capacity. Nutritional intake was assessed using the validated Brief-Type Self-Administered Diet History Questionnaire, and higher-level functional capacity was assessed using the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology Index of Competence (TMIG-IC) questionnaire. Oral examinations, masticatory performance tests, stimulated salivary flow rate (SSF) tests, blood tests, blood pressure tests and body mass index (BMI) assessments were conducted. Univariable and multivariable linear regression analyses were performed. RESULTS Multivariable linear regression analyses adjusted for sex, education, TMIG-IC and BMI ≤20 kg/m2 showed that participants with masticatory performance <173 mg/dL had lower intake of folic acid and vitamin A than those with masticatory performance ≥173 mg/dL. SSF was positively associated with intake of vitamin A. The number of teeth was positively associated with the intake of β-carotene. With smaller effect sizes, masticatory performance, SSF and number of teeth were also associated with the intake of various micronutrients and carbohydrates. CONCLUSION Lower masticatory performance, lower SSF and fewer teeth were associated with a lower intake of several micronutrients, such as vitamin A, β-carotene and folic acids, in Japanese individuals of advanced age. Oral health practitioners should pay careful attention to the nutritional intake of older people with poor mastication, dry mouth and severe tooth loss.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Preserving sufficient oral function and maintaining aadequate nutrition are essential for preventing physical frailty and the following long-term care. We recently developed the 6-month Comprehensive Awareness Modification of Mouth, Chewing And Meal (CAMCAM) program, in which participants gather monthly to learn about oral health and nutrition while eating a textured lunch together. This study examined whether the CAMCAM program could improve attitude and behavior towards oral health, mastication, and diet as well as ameliorate oral frailty in community-dwelling older adults. DESIGN Single-arm pre-post comparison study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS A total of 271 community-dwelling adults (72.3 ± 5.7 years of age; 159 women [58.7%]) in 4 Japanese municipalities were recruited, of which 249 participants (92%) were assessed at the final evaluation. INTERVENTION Participants gathered once a month at community centers to learn about oral health and nutrition while eating a "munchy" textured lunch containing proper nutrition. MEASUREMENTS Oral frailty, frailty, and eating behavior were evaluated with the Oral Frailty Index-8 (OFI-8), Kihon checklist (KCL), and CAMCAM checklist, respectively. Participants were divided into Oral frailty (OF) and Robust groups according to OFI-8 scores. The differences in KCL and CAMCAM checklist results between the OF and Robust groups were statistically tested along with changes in scores after the program. RESULTS KCL and CAMCAM checklist scores were significantly lower in the OF group at the initial assessment. OFI-8 and KCL findings were significantly improved in the OF group after completing the program (all P <0.05). Regarding the CAMCAM checklist, awareness of chewing improved significantly in the Robust group (P=0.009), with a similar tendency in the OF group (P=0.080). CONCLUSION The findings of this pilot study suggest that the CAMCAM program may improve both oral and systemic frailty in addition to attitudes towards chewing, oral health, and meals, especially in individuals with oral frailty. The CAMCAM program merits expansion as a community-based frailty prevention program.

Abstract
Objectives: The objective of this scoping review was to summarize and provide a visual overview of the present-day knowledge on ecological determinants of eating behavior in community-dwelling elderly persons in relation with nutrition communication, considering the evolution of the field. The second objective was to integrate results in recommendations for the development of nutrition communication strategies. Methods: A literature review was performed on Medline, PubMed and Google Scholar, according with the PRISMA protocol for scoping reviews. An a-priori analysis was executed by categorizing determinants from the literature according with the different levels represented in the ecological framework and an a-posteriori analysis by using VosViewer for a chronological bibliometric mapping analysis. Results: Of 4029 articles retrieved, 77 were selected for analysis. Initial publications focused more on individual determinants of eating behavior. Over time, there was a shift towards a holistic view of eating behavior considering the "food environment", including social networks, physical settings and public policy. Conclusion: Beyond the individual, all ecological levels are relevant when targeting eating behavior in the elderly. Nutrition communication strategies should be structured considering these influences.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This scoping review describes the relationship between tooth retention, health, and quality of life in older adults. METHODS Seven databases were searched for English language articles for subjects ≥ 65 y from 1981 to 2021. Exposure was tooth retention (≥ 20), and outcomes were general/systemic health and quality of life. Methodological quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and Cochrane Risk of Bias 2.0 tool. RESULTS 140 articles were included, only four were randomized trials. Inter-rater agreement (κ) regarding study inclusion was 0.924. Most were assessed with low risk of bias (n = 103) and of good quality (n = 96). Most studies were conducted in Japan (n = 60) and Europe (n = 51) and only nine in the US. Tooth retention was referred to as "functional dentition" in 132 studies and "shortened dental arch" in 19 studies. Study outcomes were broadly synthesized as (1) cognitive decline/functional dependence, (2) health status/chronic diseases, (3) nutrition, and (4) quality of life. DISCUSSION There is a positive relationship between tooth retention, overall health, and quality of life. Older adults retaining ≥ 20 teeth are less likely to experience poorer health. Having < 20 teeth increases the likelihood for functional dependence and onset of disability, and may affect successful ageing. This review supports the general finding that the more teeth older adults retain as they age, the less likely they are to have adverse health outcomes. However, significant knowledge gaps remain which can limit decision-making affecting successful ageing for many older adults. This review highlights the need to consider, as an important marker of oral health and function, the retention of a functional minimum of a natural dentition, rather than a simple numeric score of missing teeth.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Inadequate nutrient intakes have been linked with poor dentition in older adults. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between the composition of functional tooth units (FTU) and nutrient intakes in older men. DESIGN A cross-sectional study with a standardised validated diet history assessment and comprehensive oral health assessments. FTU were categorised by dentition type: (i) Group A (Natural FTU Only), (ii) Group B (Natural and Replaced FTU) and (iii) Group C (No Natural FTU). Attainment of nutrient reference values (NRV) for sixteen micronutrients was incorporated into a micronutrient risk variable, dichotomised 'good' (≥ 12) or 'poor' (≤ 11), and for seven macronutrients into a macronutrient risk variable, dichotomised 'good' (≥ 5) or 'poor' (≤ 4). SETTING Subjects selected from the local Sydney geographical areas. PARTICIPANTS Community-dwelling older men (n 608). RESULTS 32 % (n 197) of participants were categorised as Group A, 27 % (n 167) as Group B and 40 % (n 244) as Group C. In adjusted logistic regression analysis, being in Group C, compared with Group A, was associated with intakes below NRV recommendations for fibre (OR: 2·30, 95 % CI 1·30, 4·05). Adjusted analysis also showed that men in Group C, compared with Group A, were more likely to have poor intake of macronutrients (OR: 2·00, 95 % CI 1·01, 3·94). CONCLUSIONS Our study shows statistically significant associations between the composition of FTU and poor macronutrient intakes. Maintaining natural pairs of occluding FTU may be important for attaining adequate nutrient intakes in older men.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM A clinical assessment of the masticatory performance of edentulous people treated with bimaxillary implant-supported fixed prostheses is lacking. PURPOSE The purpose of this case-control study was to compare the masticatory performance of edentulous people treated with bimaxillary implant-supported fixed prostheses to that of those with a natural dentition by using a simplified comminution test with hard viscoelastic test food and a mixing ability test. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty-six participants were recruited and divided into 2 equal groups (n=18) based on their dental status. The experimental group (7 women, mean ±standard deviation age=69.8 ±7.5 years) had bimaxillary implant-supported fixed prostheses, and the control group (9 women, mean ±standard deviation age=68.3 ±5.6 years) had a natural dentition. A hard viscoelastic food comminution test and a mixing ability test with 2-colored chewing gum were performed in both groups. The number and total area of the particles during the comminution test and the variance of hue during the mixing ability test were measured. The data were analyzed with the parametric (paired t test) and nonparametric (Mann-Whitney U) tests to assess differences between the groups (α=.05). RESULTS The experimental group exhibited significantly fewer pieces in the food comminution test than the control group (P=.001). The experimental group also showed significantly higher variance of hue values than the control group (P<.001). CONCLUSIONS Patients treated with bimaxillary implant-supported prostheses had reduced masticatory performance in comparison to those with a natural dentition, despite having been provided with satisfactory and well-functioning prostheses.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Weight loss is a critical health issue in older adults. Oral function is essential for nutrient intake and can be restored using dental prosthetic treatments in patients with tooth loss. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between tooth loss and weight loss among the older adults and to evaluate the magnitude of its risk reduction by dental prosthetic treatment. DESIGN Three-year follow-up longitudinal study based on a self-reported questionnaire. SETTING Community-dwelling older adults in Japan. PARTICIPANTS Adults aged 65 and older (n = 53,690). MEASUREMENTS We used >10% weight loss during follow-up, the number of remaining teeth, and the use of dental prostheses as the outcome variable, exposure variable, and mediator, respectively. We fitted the logistic regression model including possible confounders and calculated the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) of the controlled direct effect (CDE) at the level of use or nonuse of the dental prosthesis based on a causal mediation analysis framework. Additionally, we calculated the proportion eliminated by the dental prosthesis. RESULTS The mean age of participants was 72.6 years (1 SD = 5.5), and 47.4% were males. About 5.8% (n = 3132) of them experienced >10% weight loss during the follow-up. Weight loss was observed in 6.8% of the participants with 0-19 remaining teeth and in 4.3% of them with ≥20 remaining teeth. The CDE of 0-19 remaining teeth was greater when no one used dental prosthesis (OR = 1.41; 95% CI = 1.26-1.59) compared with that when all participants used dental prosthesis (OR = 1.26; 95% CI = 1.08-1.46). This indicated that dental prosthesis decreased the risk of weight loss by 37.3%. CONCLUSION Our study revealed that tooth loss increased the risk of clinically critical levels of weight loss among community-dwelling older adults. However, this risk was reduced by dental prosthetic treatment.

Abstract
Tooth loss reflects the endpoint of two major dental diseases: dental caries and periodontitis. These comprise 2% of the global burden of human diseases. A lower number of teeth has been associated with various systemic diseases, in particular, atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ACVD). The aim was to summarize the evidence of tooth loss related to the risk for ACVD or death. Cohort studies with prospective follow-up data were retrieved from Medline-PubMed and EMBASE. Following the PRISMA guidelines, two reviewers independently selected articles, assessed the risk of bias, and extracted data on the number of teeth (tooth loss; exposure) and ACVD-related events and all-cause mortality (ACM) (outcome). A total of 75 articles were included of which 44 were qualified for meta-analysis. A lower number of teeth was related to a higher outcome risk; the pooled risk ratio (RR) for the cumulative incidence of ACVD ranged from 1.69 to 2.93, and for the cumulative incidence of ACM, the RR ranged from 1.76 to 2.27. The pooled multiple adjusted hazard ratio (HR) for the incidence density of ACVD ranged from 1.02 to 1.21, and for the incidence density of ACM, the HR ranged from 1.02 to 1.30. This systematic review and meta-analyses of survival data show that a lower number of teeth is a risk factor for both ACVD and death. Health care professionals should use this information to inform their patients and increase awareness on the importance of good dental health and increase efforts to prevent tooth loss.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Edentulism has a serious impact on quality of life (QoL), and changes in QoL can affect sexual functioning. AIM To assess the correlation between oral health-related quality of life (OHQoL) and sexual function in edentulous men. METHODS A total of 148 men (18-70 years) with incomplete natural dentition completed the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) and Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) at 4 time points: before (T0), during (T1), 4 weeks after (T2), and 1 year (T3) after dental treatment. Kruskal-Wallis, Friedman, and Spearman's rank correlation tests were used for statistical analyses (significance at P < .05). RESULTS IIEF total scores differed significantly between the time points (P < .001), with medians and interquartile ranges (IQR) of 46 (7), 42 (8), 49 (6), and 52 (5) at T0, T1, T2, and T3, respectively. The highest rate of sexual dysfunction was detected at T1 (42.2%) and the lowest at T3 (26.6%). IIEF domain scores also decreased at T1 and increased at T2 and T3 compared with T0 (P < .05). Median (IQR) OHIP-14 scores were 26.0 (8), 28.0 (8), 20.0 (6), and 18.0 (5), respectively (P < .001). OHIP score was significantly correlated with IIEF domain scores (P < .05) and there were strong negative correlations between OHIP and total IIEF scores at T0 (r = -0.737), T1 (r = -0.802), T2 (r = -0.831), and T3 (r = -0.722) (P = <.001 for all). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Changes and correlations in IEFF and OHIP-14 scores; SD and ED prevalances at T0; T1; T2 and T3 periods. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS Sexual functions was significantly correlate with OHQoL; thus patients with ED should also be examined in terms of toothlessness. CONCLUSION OHQoL was significantly associated with sexual function in men. However, correcting the problem of edentulism improved OHQoL and sexual function, with the best results observed after 1-year follow-up. H Turgut, S Turgut. Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the association between asthma and severe tooth loss in the U.S. (United States) adult population. METHODS Data were analyzed from the national health and nutritional examination survey (NHANES), 2009-2014. Study-participants were classified into current, former, and never asthmatics based on their asthma status. Former-asthmatics were excluded. The case definition of severe tooth loss (outcome variable) was having 9 or fewer remaining permanent teeth. Characteristics of our study-sample were identified based on the descriptive statistical analyses. Logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the association between asthma and severe tooth. Multivariable models were constructed to control for the known common clinical, demographic, and lifestyle factors. Each analysis accounted for the examination sample weights and the complex clustered design of the continuous NHANES. RESULTS Total study-participants were 14,184 representing ≈185.77 million U.S. adults. Prevalence of asthma was 8.99% in our study-sample, and 8.78% had severe tooth loss. Current-asthmatic adults had 34% higher odds of severe tooth loss as compared to their reference group of never-asthmatics adults in the U.S. after controlling for age, race or ethnicity, gender, diabetes, smoking, body mass index, education, and family income-to-poverty ratio. CONCLUSION In the United States, as compared to never-asthmatic adults, current-asthmatic adults were more likely to have severe tooth-loss. Oral health promotion is therefore recommended through medical-dental integration to ensure overall health for asthmatic adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE Older adults are at risk for tooth loss and compromised nutritional status. Our objective was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to answer the following question: Among adults aged ≥60 y living in developed countries, what are the associations between tooth loss and nutritional status as assessed by a validated nutrition screening or assessment tool? METHODS PRISMA guidelines were followed. PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, Web of Science, and MEDLINE were searched for studies published in English between 2009 and 2019 that met inclusion criteria. Data extracted included study and participant characteristics, dentition, and nutritional status. Risk of bias was assessed with a modified Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Random effects meta-analysis was used. RESULTS Of the 588 unduplicated articles identified, 78 were reviewed in full text, and 7 met inclusion criteria. Six studies were combined for a meta-analysis, which revealed that individuals who were completely edentulous or who lacked functional dentition had a 21% increased likelihood of being at risk of malnutrition or being malnourished, as compared with those who were dentulous or had functionally adequate dentition (risk ratio, 1.21; 95% CI, 1.11 to 1.32; I2 = 70%). Whether the article statistically adjusted for medical history explained most of the heterogeneity in the pooled effect. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Findings suggest that older adults with tooth loss are at greater risk of malnutrition than those with functionally adequate dentition. Use of validated tools to assess risk of malnutrition in older adults with tooth loss is important to promote early intervention and referral to optimize nutrition and oral health status. Findings were limited by heterogeneity, risk of bias, and overall quality of the studies reviewed. Cohort studies that adjust for known confounders and use consistent approaches to assess tooth loss and nutritional status are needed. KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER STATEMENT The results of this study suggest that older adults with tooth loss are at greater risk of malnutrition than those with functionally adequate dentition. Screening of this population for malnutrition by health care professionals, including dentists and dietitians, may result in corresponding referrals to optimize nutrition and oral health status. Further research is needed with consistent approaches to assess tooth loss and nutritional status.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study investigated whether oral health status, defined as number of natural teeth and subsequent prosthodontic rehabilitation, was associated with future dietary intake and diet quality in older adults in The Prospective Epidemiological Study of Myocardial Infarction (PRIME). METHODS PRIME was originally established to explore cardiovascular risk factors in 50-59 year old men in Northern Ireland (1991-1994). A rescreening phase assessed oral health (2001-2004), while diet was assessed in 2015. Diet quality was characterised by the Dietary Diversity Score and Mediterranean Diet Score. In the current analysis, associations between oral health status, dietary intake and quality were assessed using regression models in 1096 participants. RESULTS Amongst study participants, the overall mean number of teeth was 18.5, 51.5 % had ≥21 natural teeth and 49.6 % wore dentures. Oral health status was categorised into five groups: 21-28 teeth with (n = 111) and without (n = 453) dentures, 1-20 teeth with (n = 354) and without (n = 99) dentures and edentate with dentures (n = 79). After full adjustment, men with ≥21 teeth and dentures had a higher future intake of fruit, vegetables, and nuts, and diet quality scores, compared to those with <21 teeth with dentures. Edentate men with dentures were less likely to achieve the future fruit dietary recommendation. CONCLUSIONS Having ≥21 natural remaining teeth positively affected the future intake of fruit, vegetables, and nuts, as well as diet quality. Dentures may be beneficial in men with ≥21 natural remaining teeth, as they were associated with an increased future intake of fruit, vegetables, and nuts and better diet quality. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Oral health status is associated with dietary intake, after an average time period of 13 years, with those with a larger number of natural teeth having a better diet quality. Further research is required to investigate this relationship in larger, diverse populations with more detailed dietary assessment.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine the association between the number of existing teeth (NET) and socioeconomic status (SES), oral health-related behaviours, and metabolic syndrome in Korean adults aged 55-79 years. The study included 3255 adults who underwent oral health examinations and answered questionnaires regarding SES, oral health-related behaviours, and metabolic diseases in the Sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013-2015). The dependent variable was the binary status based on the median NET in each age group. The independent variables were based on SES, oral health-related behaviours, and the presence of metabolic syndrome. The study findings showed that the factors associated with the NET were sex, household income, education level, region of residence, daily toothbrushing frequency, dental visit within 1 year, smoking, and metabolic syndrome. NET was lower in males (adjusted OR: 0.74), in low household income group (adjusted OR: 0.77), in primary school graduates (adjusted OR: 0.53), in rural residents (adjusted OR: 0.78), and in medicaid beneficiaries (adjusted OR: 0.78). The interventions aimed at preserving existing teeth in elderly population should consider their SES, oral health-related behaviours, and metabolic syndrome and overhauling current oral healthcare system and redefining the roles of oral health professionals.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the relationship among the denture status, number of remaining teeth, and malnutrition in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Seventy-three patients (43 men/30 women) who required hemodialysis were included in the study. Weight and height, Kt/V, urea reduction ratio, midweek interdialytic weight gain, ultrafiltration volume, and erythropoietin dosage were determined for all patients. Laboratory measurements and predialysis blood samples for biomarkers were collected within the monthly routine tests. Dental examination focused on the denture status and total number of remaining teeth. Denture status were classified into two groups as prosthesis group (patients have prosthesis) and no prosthesis group (patients do not have any kind of prosthesis). And also, patients were assigned to one of four categories based on the number of remaining natural teeth: (i) edentulous, (ii) 1-7 teeth, (iii) 8-19 teeth, and (iv) >20 teeth. The data were statistically analyzed (a = 0.05). Body mass index values were increased in the prosthesis patients. Serum albumin levels of the CKD patients were under the reference value (3.8 g/dL) both in prosthesis and no prosthesis groups. Patients who have eight and more teeth showed higher serum albumin levels, and patients who had 1-7 teeth showed lower serum albumin levels in prosthesis group. CKD patients' nutritional habits were affected by denture status (having prosthesis or not). The number of the remaining teeth in prosthesis group affected the serum albumin levels of CKD patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the eating experience and eating-related quality of life (ERQOL) of community-dwelling older adults with tooth loss. METHOD Nineteen older adults from the clinics of a northeast US dental school who met inclusion criteria (>65 y old, <20 teeth, and no dentures) composed the sample. For this mixed methods study, demographic characteristics, number and location of teeth, Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form score, and anthropometrics data were collected; semistructured interviews were conducted to collect in-depth information about the eating experience and ERQOL. Thematic analysis was completed with NVivo 12 software (QSR International). RESULTS Participants' mean age was 71.3 y (SD = 5.2); 52.6% (n = 10) were women; 63.2% (n = 12) were Black or African American. The mean Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form score of 12.1 was reflective of normal nutrition status; 31.6% (n = 6) of patients were at risk for malnutrition or were malnourished. Fifteen percent (n = 3) were fully edentulous; 84.2% (n = 16) had 1 to 19 teeth (mean = 10.8, SD = 6.5). The 2 overarching themes identified were adaptive and maladaptive behavioral responses to tooth loss. Adaptive strategies included modification in food preparation and cooking methods, food texture selection, meal timing, and approaches to chewing. Maladaptive behaviors included food avoidance and limiting eating and smiling in front of others. Psychosocial factors, including finances, limited food choices and ERQOL, whereas the support of family and friends enhanced ERQOL according to participants. CONCLUSION Older adults with tooth loss exhibit both adaptive and maladaptive behaviors that affect their eating experience, dietary intake, and ERQOL. While many expressed positive adaptive coping strategies, they also described maladaptive behaviors, including avoidance of healthy foods and limiting eating during social interactions, which may affect their nutritional status and overall health and well-being. Further research is needed to explore how duration and severity of tooth loss influence these behaviors and risk of malnutrition. Interprofessional approaches are needed to support positive adaptation and coping with tooth loss. KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER STATEMENT The results of this study can be used by health professionals treating patients with tooth loss in an effort to improve their eating experience and eating-related quality of life. The findings provide data to support further studies and the need for evidence-based guidelines and educational materials to meet the unique needs of older adults with tooth loss.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As tooth loss decreases in an aging United States, retaining enough natural teeth for function is important for quality of life. METHODS The authors used data from the 1999 through 2004 and the 2009 through 2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys to assess changes in tooth loss in adults 50 years or older. The authors evaluated changes in edentulism, retaining all teeth, and having a functional dentition (21 or more natural teeth) according to poverty status. RESULTS Edentulism was lower in 2009 through 2014 than in 1999 through 2004 (11% versus 17%) for adults 50 years or older, but this decrease was not significant among the poor (people at < 100% of the federal poverty guideline; P > .05). Complete tooth retention improved from 14% to 21% between 1999 through 2004 and 2009 through 2014 for people 50 years or older (P < .05). Gains were attributable mostly to adults who were nonpoor (≥ 200% federal poverty guideline). More older adults had a functional dentition in 2009 through 2014 than in 1999 through 2004 (67% versus 55%; P < .05), although the increases generally were significant only for those not living in poverty. CONCLUSIONS Complete tooth loss has decreased by more than 75% for those aged 65 through 74 years over the past 5 decades in the United States. Improvements in tooth loss measures, such as edentulism and complete tooth retention, have been most significant among the nonpoor, whereas those who are poor have experienced fewer improvements. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS An aging population is experiencing less edentulism and greater tooth retention, so older adults may need more regular oral health care and prevention services to address concerns such as root caries and periodontal disease.

Abstract
Resumo Objetivou-se identificar se a falta de dentição funcional (DF) está associada com o comprometimento das funções bucais/atividades diárias entre adultos brasileiros. Para isto, foram utilizados dados da Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde Bucal - SB Brasil 2010. A DF foi avaliada pelo critério proposto pela Organização Mundial de Saúde (pelo menos 20 dentes na boca). O instrumento Impactos Odontológicos nos Desempenhos Diários (IODD) foi utilizado para avaliar as atividades diárias/funções bucais. Análises descritivas, bivariadas (Qui-quadrado) e múltiplas (Regressão Logística) foram realizadas, sendo estimado o odds ratio e o intervalo de confiança 95% (OR/IC95%). Foram incluídos e avaliados 9564 adultos. Foram considerados sem DF 2200 adultos (20,5%). Tiveram impacto em pelo menos uma das atividades diárias/funções bucais avaliadas, 55,0% dos adultos. A falta de DF entre adultos foi associada (p ≤ 0,05) com o impacto na fala (1,88/1,33-2,64) e vergonha ao sorrir ou falar (1,35/1,00-1,83). Uma prevalência considerável de falta de DF foi identificada, esta ausência foi associada às atividades diárias/funções bucais (fala e vergonha ao sorrir e falar). A reabilitação dentária de pacientes sem DF deve considerar a devolução destas funções bucais perdidas (fala e vergonha ao sorrir ou falar).

Abstract
Poor dental status and chewing deficiencies have been associated with cognitive decline. Altered dietary habits and malnutrition have been suggested as linking mechanisms. The aim of the present review was thus to investigate if poor oral health, and in particular tooth loss and impaired masticatory function, may affect dietary selection and nutritional intake in older adults, and moreover, to assess if prosthodontic dental care may improve nutritional status. Extensive tooth loss may impair masticatory function. Several studies in older populations have shown that severe tooth loss and masticatory impairment are associated with limited consumption of various food types (especially fruits and vegetables), increased consumption of sugary and easy-to-chew foods, and lower dietary intake of fibre and vitamins. However, these findings are not consistently reported, due to methodological variation among studies, potential adverse causalities, and the multifactorial nature of food choices. On the other hand, a few interventional studies revealed that prosthetic rehabilitation of missing teeth, when accompanied by dietary counselling, may improve dietary habits and nutritional intake. Further research is required to improve current knowledge of these associations. Under the limitations of the current study, a functional dental arch of natural or artificial teeth is important for maintaining adequate chewing efficiency and ability, but this only partly contributes to food choices and nutritional status. The multifactorial nature of food choices necessitates the interprofessional collaboration of dental professionals, dietetics practitioners, and primary care providers to improve dietary habits and nutritional intake.

Abstract
The objective of this research was to evaluate trends in socioeconomic inequalities in the prevalence of functional dentition among community-dwelling older adults in Brazil. This was a cross-sectional study with data from the last two SBBrasil Project surveys conducted in 2003 and 2010. Functional dentition was defined as the presence of 20 or more natural teeth and was assessed during the clinical examination of dentition status. Schooling was used as the socioeconomic position measure. Socioeconomic inequality was measured using two complex measures; the slope index of inequality (SII) and the relative index of inequality (RII). The prevalence of functional dentition was 10.8% (95%CI: 8.1-14.2) in 2003 and 13.6% (95%CI: 11.1-16.5) in 2010. The prevalence of functional dentition increased significantly over the educational rank in both years. Absolute inequalities were significant for both years and remained unaltered between 2003 and 2010. Significant relative inequality in the prevalence of functional dentition was found in both years of the survey. Socioeconomic inequalities in the prevalence of functional dentition among older adults in Brazil persisted significantly between both national oral health surveys.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental esthetics, chewing and speech should be preserved in a dentition denominated functional and are closely related to satisfaction with oral health (SOH), impacts caused by oral problems and have a possible association with Oral Health-Related Quality of Life. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the influence of different concepts of functional dentition (FD) on both SOH and impacts on daily performance (IDP) among Brazilian adults. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted with 9564 adults (35-44 years). SOH and IDP were evaluated using the Oral Impacts on Daily Performance (OIDP) questionnaire. FD was considered based on four different definitions: I-classification of the World Health Organization (FDWHO = ≥20 teeth); II-well-distributed teeth (WDT = ≥10 teeth in each arch); III-classified by esthetics and occlusion (FDClass5 = sequential presence of one tooth in each arch, ≥10 teeth in each arch, 12 anterior teeth, ≥three posterior occluding pairs [POPs] of premolars and ≥one POP molar bilaterally); and IV-classified by esthetics, occlusion and periodontal status (FDClass6 = FDClass5 plus all sextants with CPI ≤ 3 and/or CAL ≤ 1). The proportion of adults satisfied with oral health and without overall impact (OIDP = 0) was calculated for each definition of FD. Multiple Poisson regression models were adjusted by demographic-socioeconomic characteristics, self-reported oral problems and the use of dental services for each dependent variable. RESULTS When FDClass5 and FDClass6 were considered a greater proportion of adults reported being satisfied (52.1 and 53.1%, respectively) and have OIDP = 0 (52.4 and 53.3, respectively). In the multiple models, SOH was associated with FDClass5 (RP = 1.21) and FDClass6 (RP = 1.24) and OIDP = 0 was associated with WDT (RP = 1.14) and FDClass6 (RP = 1.21). CONCLUSIONS The greater influence of WDT, FDClass5 and FDClass6 on aspects related to quality of life in comparison to FDWHO demonstrates the need for the establishment of a broader definition of FD that encompasses subjective aspects.

Abstract
Background We want to assess quality of life in elderly patients in relation to the number of remaining teeth, the number of ingested drugs and xerostomía and to determine the correlation between an increased intake of drugs and a greater feeling of dry mouth and to know the most commonly used measures to control xerostomia. Material and Methods 30 subjects aged between 65 and 95 years (14 males, 16 females) completed the OHIP questionnaire to determine quality of life. For oral status, the number of remaining teeth according to WHO criteria and xerostomia using the xerostomia index (XI) were studied. In cases of dry mouth sensation, the measures to alleviate it were asked. Results The average quality of life according to the OHIP rate is 19.23 (Dt = 10.58), being 56 the worst quality of life. The Pearson correlation coefficient indicates that quality of life is not related to the number of remaining teeth (r = -0.046; p = 0.810) nor the number of ingested drugs (r = 0.226; p = 0.23) but a greater sensation of dry mouth is related to a poorer quality of life (r = 0.678; p = 0.230). There is no association between the number of ingested drugs and the xerostomia index (r = 0.144; p = 0.447). The most frequently measures used against dry mouth were drinking water (21 subjects) and sugarless candies (15 subjects). Conclusions Quality of life is not related to the number of remaining teeth nor the number of ingested drugs. However, a higher level of xerostomia was significantly associated with a poorer quality of life. There is no association between the number of drugs ingested and xerostomia index. Sugarless candies and drinking water are the more frequently used measures to alleviate dry mouth. Key words:Quality of life, oral health, elderly.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Increasing research suggests that periodontal status is associated with hormone replacement therapy in postmenopausal women. This study was performed to assess the relationship between the number of natural teeth and ever use of hormone replacement therapy in postmenopausal women using nationally representative Korean data. METHODS Data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2010 and 2012 were used, and the analysis in this study was confined to a total of 4869 respondents over 19 years old who had gone through menopause and who had no missing data for the reproductive factors and outcome variables in that study. The total number of natural teeth was then calculated after excluding third molars. The time of day when tooth brushing was done was recorded as representative oral health behavior. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to assess association between the number of natural teeth and the use of hormone replacement therapy. RESULTS Among participants who had ever used hormone replacement therapy, the proportions (percentage and standard error) with no teeth, 1-9 teeth, 10-19 teeth, 20-27 teeth, and 28 teeth were 5.0±2.4%, 6.7±1.4%, 12.5±1.7%, 18.9±1.0%, and 20.7±1.6%, respectively (P<0.05). The adjusted odds ratio and 95% confidence interval for having fewer than 20 teeth <20 was 0.624 [0.464-0.840] for the individuals using hormone replacement therapy, after adjustments. CONCLUSIONS The analysis revealed that the use of hormone replacement therapy by postmenopausal women showed positive effects for retention of natural teeth. Lack of hormone replacement therapy may be considered to be an independent risk indicator for tooth loss in Korean postmenopausal women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the association between dentition status and functional disabilities among community-dwelling older individuals. SUBJECTS AND METHODS A total of 5012 individuals aged 65-74 were interviewed in 2013 during a nationwide community-based survey. This cross-sectional study used a questionnaire including information on dentition, locomotion impairment, difficulties in basic and instrumental activities of daily life, socio-demographic characteristics, behaviour and general health status. Poisson regression models assessed prevalence ratios (PR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). RESULTS About 31.3% of older people in Brazil reported having ≥21 preserved teeth, the condition for a functional dentition without prosthetic appliances. This proportion was significantly lower among individuals with locomotion impairment and difficulties in basic and instrumental activities of daily life. After adjusting for relevant covariates, functional dentition remained statistically associated with severe (PR = 0.69, 95% CI = 0.15-0.63) and total (PR = 0.69, 95% CI = 0.26-0.44) locomotion impairments, and difficulties in basic activities of daily life (PR = 0.70, 95% CI = 0.53-0.93). CONCLUSION Having a functional dentition was significantly less prevalent among those affected by functional disabilities, and this association is unlikely to be due to insufficient control for relevant covariates. The association between dentition and functional disability is bidirectional and involves a complex interplay of one upon the other, and of factors that influence both outcomes.

Abstract
AIM To explore associations between the number of natural teeth and metabolic syndrome in adults. MATERIAL AND METHODS Cross-sectional data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005-2008 were used. Eligible adults (n = 5511) were classified into four groups by their number of natural teeth (excluding third molars): full dentition, 21-27 teeth, 1-20 teeth, or edentulous. Metabolic syndrome was defined by diagnostic guidelines from the American Heart Association and National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Associations were analysed by survey logistic regression. Biometric and metabolic parameters in different dentition groups were compared. RESULTS Adjusting for age, gender, race/ethnicity, ratio of family income to poverty, physical activity, smoking, and energy intake, tooth loss was significantly associated with metabolic syndrome (p = 0.002). Compared to participants with full dentition, the odds were 32% higher in those with 21-27 teeth, 55% higher in those with 1-20 teeth and 79% higher in edentulous participants. The number of natural teeth was inversely associated with body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose and insulin concentrations (p < 0.01 for all); it was positively associated with serum HDL cholesterol concentration (p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS The number of natural teeth is inversely associated with the presence of metabolic syndrome in adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We examined the relationships between dentition, nutritional status and dietary intakes of energy, protein and micronutrients among older people in assisted living facilities in Helsinki. BACKGROUND Poor dentition is associated with malnutrition. Less is known about how dentition is associated with detailed nutrient intakes in institutionalised older people. MATERIALS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study assessed 343 participants (mean age 83 years). Dentition was assessed by trained ward nurses and divided into edentulous participants without dentures (group 1), edentulous participants with removable dentures (group 2) and those with any natural teeth (group 3). Nutritional status was assessed by Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA). The energy, protein and nutrient intakes were calculated from detailed 1-day food diaries and compared with the recommendations of the Finnish National Nutrition Council as a measure of dietary adequacy. Assessment included also participants' cognitive and functional status. RESULTS Of the participants, 8.2, 39.1 and 52.8% were in groups 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Altogether 22% were malnourished according to MNA. Group 1 had the poorest nutritional status. A large proportion of participants consumed less than the recommended amounts of energy, protein or micronutrients. Half of the participants consumed <60 g/day of protein. The intake of protein was significantly lower in group 1 than in other two groups. CONCLUSION Malnutrition and inadequate protein intake were very common and associated with dentition among older people with multiple disabilities in assisted living facilities. Assessment of dental status should be part of good nutritional care in long-term care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In chronic kidney disease (CKD), inadequate nutritional intake, inflammation, and increased oxidative stress have been the major contributing factors in malnutrition pathogenesis. However, there is still a paucity of evidence assessing the magnitude of the effect of tooth loss on malnutrition in CKD populations. The authors hypothesize that among patients with CKD, tooth loss may affect nutritional status, using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1988 to 1994 (NHANES III). METHODS Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was estimated based on cystatin C levels using the relevant equation. Urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (albuminuria) was calculated in milligrams per gram with a cutoff point of 30 mg/g. CKD was defined based on estimated GFR <60 mL/minute/1.73m(2) and albuminuria ≥30 mg/g. The cutoff point for serum albumin was set at 3.7 g/dL. Tooth loss categories were based on the number of missing and replaced teeth. RESULTS A total of 2,749 patients was included and stratified based on their oral health status. There was a statistically significant correlation between tooth loss and the proportion of patients with low protein and caloric intake (P = 0.02 and 0.01, respectively). Serum albumin reached a frequency peak in the fully edentulous group without dentures (group 4, 19.2%). In the same group, individuals had lower protein (30.1%) and caloric intake (30.2%) (P = 0.01 and 0.02, respectively). Furthermore, logistic regression analysis confirmed the significant role of tooth loss on serum albumin and protein and energy intake in this population even after adjusting for confounding variables. CONCLUSION Tooth loss independently predicts low energy and protein intake, as well as serum albumin levels, biomarkers of malnutrition in CKD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To verify the association between functional dentition and social determinants of health in 35-year-old to 44-year-old adults residing in the metropolitan municipalities of Minas Gerais, Brazil. METHODS This cross-sectional study assessed a sample of 850 adults obtained using a cluster sampling scheme. Five of 33 municipalities were randomly selected, followed by the random selection of census tracts and neighborhood blocks. Every household in the randomly selected blocks was visited and every resident adult was interviewed and examined by five previously calibrated researchers (κinter , 0.8-0.9; κintra , 0.8-1.0) between May and December 2010. The condition of the dental crown was recorded using the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria, with the exception of the third molars. The dependent variable functional dentition was defined as the presence of 20 or more teeth in the mouth and obtained by counting the number of teeth lost due to any reason, followed by subtraction of this number from the total of 28 teeth. Independent variables were grouped, according to a theoretical model adapted from those proposed by Dahlgren and Whitehead and Petersen, into distal factors (contextual, socioeconomic, and housing conditions), intermediate factors (availability and use of oral health services), and proximal factors (lifestyle, risk behaviors, and demographic conditions). The association between functional dentition and the independent variables was investigated using simple and multiple Poisson regression with robust variance, which followed a modeling strategy in accordance with the hierarchy outlined by the theoretical model. The analyses were processed on SPSS 17.0. RESULTS The average age of the participants was 39.4 ± 3.2 years, and the average per capita monthly family income was US$214.52 ± 261.11. Most adults presented functional dentition (80.6%; 95% CI: 77.3-83.5). Independently of marital status, age group and sex, the prevalence ratio (PR) of subjects with a per capita monthly family income ≥US$168.54 was 1.09 (P = 0.048); the PR of adults with at least an undergraduate degree was 1.14 (P = 0.001), and the PR of the participants who most often used a dental service other than a public service supplementary healthcare plan or private service was 1.13 (P = 0.021). The prevalence of functional dentition was 17% higher among nonsmokers (P = 0.012) and 16% higher among those who used dental floss (P = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS Income, education, type of dental service most often used, lifestyle, risk behaviors and demographic conditions are distal, intermediate and proximal social determinants of health associated with functional dentition in adults, demonstrating the need for public policies aimed to promoting oral health including intersectoral actions.

Abstract
This cross-sectional study investigates whether calcium intakes from dairy and non-dairy sources, and absolute intakes of various dairy products, are associated with periodontitis. The calcium intake (mg/day) of 135 older Danish adults was estimated by a diet history interview and divided into dairy and non-dairy calcium. Dairy food intake (g/day) was classified into four groups: milk, cheese, fermented foods and other foods. Periodontitis was defined as the number of teeth with attachment loss ≥3 mm. Intakes of total dairy calcium (Incidence-rate ratio (IRR) = 0.97; p = 0.021), calcium from milk (IRR = 0.97; p = 0.025) and fermented foods (IRR = 0.96; p = 0.03) were inversely and significantly associated with periodontitis after adjustment for age, gender, education, sucrose intake, alcohol consumption, smoking, physical activity, vitamin D intake, heart disease, visits to the dentist, use of dental floss and bleeding on probing, but non-dairy calcium, calcium from cheese and other types of dairy food intakes were not. Total dairy foods (IRR = 0.96; p = 0.003), milk (IRR = 0.96; p = 0.028) and fermented foods intakes (IRR = 0.97; p = 0.029) were associated with reduced risk of periodontitis, but cheese and other dairy foods intakes were not. These results suggest that dairy calcium, particularly from milk and fermented products, may protect against periodontitis. Prospective studies are required to confirm these findings.
