Abstract
This study examines infant feeding beliefs and practices in a rural Peruvian Quechua community. The aim was to assess which infant foods are considered culturally meaningful, and if concordance exists between beliefs and practices. Mothers were asked to free-list their child's "actual" first foods (n = 85), then to free-list "ideal" infant foods (n = 87). Food lists were analyzed for cultural salience. Mothers listed 43 foods; four (potato, mazamorra, egg, and liver) were culturally salient on both lists. Some discordance was found between beliefs and practices. Culturally salient "ideal" foods were animal-source and protein-iron rich, whereas salient "actual" foods were plant-source and carbohydrate-based.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In Canada, nutrition policy, as outlined in the Nutrition for Healthy Term Infants recommendations, includes a daily vitamin D supplement of 10 μg (400 IU) for breastfed infants and young children to support adequate vitamin D status. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to report on adherence to vitamin D supplementation recommendations for breastfed infants (≤12 months); and for children breastfed >12 mo. METHODS Canadian Community Health Survey (paired-cycles 2015/2016 and 2017/2018) maternal experiences data for infants born 2012-2018 who received any breastmilk formed the sample (n = 7079). Whether the infant was given a vitamin D supplement (yes/no) and the frequency (daily/almost every day, 1-2/wk, or <1/wk) were surveyed. Weighted data (95% CI) were summarized according to breastfeeding history (exclusive to 6 mo and continuing; partial to 6 mo and continuing; and stopped ≤6 mo). Correlates of supplement adherence were explored using logistic regression. RESULTS Overall, 87.1% (95% CI: 85.9%, 88.3%) of participants reported giving their infant (≤12 mo) a vitamin D supplement, and of these, 83.3% (95% CI: 81.9%, 84.7%) did so daily/almost every day, 12.4% (95% CI: 11.1%, 13.7%) did so 1-2/wk, and 4.3% (95% CI: 3.6%, 5.0%) did so <1/wk. Lower adjusted odds of adherence were observed among participants reporting: stopped breastfeeding ≤6 mo, lower education or income, recent immigration, and overweight prepregnancy body mass index; higher odds of adherence were observed in the western provinces. Regarding mothers of children >12 mo and breastfed (n = 2312), 58.0% (95% CI: 54.9%, 61.1%) gave a vitamin D supplement daily/almost every day. CONCLUSIONS Adherence to providing a vitamin D supplement to breastfed infants is high in Canada. Nonetheless, we estimate that ∼27% of mothers are nonadherent to daily/almost every day administration of a vitamin D supplement and that adherence declines in children breastfed >12 mo. Further promotion to support uptake of the current guidance may be necessary, particularly for parents of recent immigration or lower socioeconomic status.

Abstract
Refugee mothers are vulnerable to cultural stereotyping and socioeconomic hardships when they migrate to a new country. This vulnerability often has a negative impact on refugee mothers' breastfeeding practices. Saskatchewan is one of the growing provinces in Canada that has a noticeable increase in refugee population with young children and limited availability of healthcare settings with baby-friendly status. Considering existing gaps in knowledge, this critical ethnographic study aimed to explore barriers that impede the breastfeeding practices of refugee mothers in Saskatchewan. After seeking ethics approval, data were collected using multiple methods, including in-depth interviews undertaken with 27 refugee mothers with young children of age range 1 day to 24 months, a review of media communications and field observations of community-based services/facilities available to refugee mothers. Findings suggest that psychosocial barriers, healthcare barriers, environmental barriers, and maternal and child health-related barriers impede the breastfeeding practices of refugee mothers in Saskatchewan. Breastfeeding practices of refugee mothers can be promoted through healthcare support, culturally appropriate services, interpretation services in healthcare settings, implementation of baby-friendly initiatives, hospital and community-based breastfeeding campaigns, and follow-up services. Collaborative efforts by healthcare settings, healthcare providers, policymakers, public health agencies, service providers, and governments are essential to support the breastfeeding practices of refugee mothers.

Abstract
The complementary feeding introduction period (introduction of solid foods alongside breastmilk or formula) is defining in children's health; however, it appears that many parents do not follow complementary feeding guidelines. Our aim was to describe current parental feeding practices during complementary feeding in relation to current recommendations and explore determinants of adherence to guidelines. We included any relevant studies published within the last decade in French or English and summarized findings by recommendation category. The timing of complementary food introduction varied widely across and within continents (earlier in North America and often delayed in Asia). The introduction of allergenic foods tended to be delayed globally. Although some parents now begin complementary feeding with solid foods (i.e., baby-led weaning), delayed introduction of lumpy textures was still prevalent in the United States and in Europe. The consumption of iron-rich foods was predominantly low in Africa. Added sugars were globally introduced early, especially in America. Evidence for the prevalence of responsive feeding practices among parents is unclear due to the small number of studies. Determinants of complementary feeding practices included parental characteristics, such as age, education, socio-economic status, and race/ethnicity. Interventions aiming to increase adherence to complementary feeding guidelines must account for parental characteristics.

Abstract
Background: Feeding practices during early years may have long-lasting influences on eating behaviors, growth patterns and body mass index (BMI) trajectory. The objectives of this study were to characterize early feeding practices among mothers in Saudi Arabia and examine their associations with child birthweight and BMI z-score (BMIz) at preschool. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study including 209 mother-child dyads who were recruited from different preschools around the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Mothers completed the study questionnaire over the telephone and preschoolers’ anthropometric measurements were objectively measured using standardized procedures. Primary predictors included variables pertaining to breastfeeding initiation, breastfeeding duration, formula milk introduction, complementary feeding, and offering fruit juice, date syrup-milk mixture, and soda drinks in a baby bottle. The study’s primary outcome was BMIz at preschool. Mothers reported child’s birthweight and sociodemographic characteristics. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize early feeding practices. Bivariate analyses and linear regression analysis were used to examine the association of early feeding practices with child birthweight and BMIz at preschool. Results: About half of the mothers reported that they have offered fruit juice and/or date syrup-milk mixture in a baby bottle (52.2% and 45.9% respectively), with an average duration of 11.5 months (SD = 7.73) and 5.90 months (SD = 6.13), respectively. Children who were offered fruit juice and/or date syrup-milk mixture in a baby bottle had significantly lower birthweights compared to children who were not (M = 2.79, SD = 0.59 vs. M = 3.06, SD = 0.69, P < 0.01 and M = 2.79, SD = 0.67 vs. M = 3.03, SD = 0.62, P < 0.01, respectively). There was a negative association between introducing fruit juice in a baby bottle and child BMIz at preschool (β: -0.18, 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.83, -0.11); This association was not significant after adjusting for child birthweight and other covariates (β: -0.10, 95% CI: -0.64, 0.09). Conclusion: A large proportion of mothers reported offering fruit juice and date syrup-milk mixture in a baby bottle. Additional research is needed to understand associations with child birthweight and BMIz. Longitudinal and interventions studies can help inform counseling guidelines and community campaigns in order to improve early feeding practices in the region.

Abstract
IntroductionBreastfeeding is the safest mode of infant feeding that is readily available at the right temperature and does not require supplies for its preparation. Despite the many benefits of breastfeeding, it is often challenging for breastfeeding mothers to breastfeed in public.MethodsA review of the literature was undertaken to explore challenges hindering breastfeeding in public and ascertain evidence-based breastfeeding-friendly strategies to overcome those barriers.ResultsMajor barriers to breastfeeding in public include negative public perceptions of breastfeeding, sociocultural barriers, embarrassment/lack of comfort, stigmatization, sexualization of breast, and nonconducive environment in public spaces. Evidence-based strategies to support breastfeeding in public include normalization of breastfeeding in public, increasing the visibility of breastfeeding through social media and public events, empowerment of breastfeeding mothers, positive role modeling, social support, and environmental modifications.ConclusionImplementation of evidence-based and innovative breastfeeding-friendly initiatives are essential to combat challenges surrounding breastfeeding in public spaces.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Worldwide data suggest a clash between parental complementary feeding practices and recommendations. Understanding the circumstances under which parents form their feeding practices is a crucial step to improve such practices. This paper aimed to systematically review the existing qualitative literature and synthesise the factors that parents take into consideration in relation to complementary feeding. DESIGN A systematic review was undertaken. Four electronic databases were searched for qualitative studies published after 2001 exploring parental experiences during complementary feeding. A framework that included authors' outcomes of interest was used to extract and synthesise study findings. The Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research were used to critically assess the included studies. SETTING Upper-middle- and high-income countries. PARTICIPANTS Parents with a child below the age of 3 years. RESULTS A total of forty-seven studies met the eligibility criteria and were included in this systematic review. The themes were organised into three main categories: (1) factors related to introduction of complementary foods; (2) factors related to the type of complementary foods and (3) factors related to both timing and type. The selected literature highlights: prevalent baby cues that prompt parents to introduce solid foods; parents' views on the recommended timing of complementary feeding; factors that drive the choice of complementary foods and perceived value in advice received from health professionals and grandmothers. CONCLUSIONS This systematic review indicates factors that can be barriers to complying with the complementary feeding guidelines, and therefore, its findings are pertinent to improving parental feeding practices through intervention studies and through infant feeding education in a primary care setting.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Food culture is a ubiquitous aspect of all societies. This review provides an overview of methods for measuring food culture, and emphasizes the importance of these measures not just for description, but also for strengthening public health practice, primarily through the development of better interventions; to monitor and evaluate changes in diet and nutrition; and for the development of strategies for sustainability and dissemination. RECENT FINDINGS Food culture measurement has enriched public health practice through its use of myriad approaches, including interviews, cultural domain analysis, visual methods, observation, time allocation studies, focus groups and community workshops, household studies, and textual analysis. Food culture measurement is essential for public health practice related to food and nutrition, and can lead to, among other outcomes, improved implementation research in nutrition, understanding household dynamics that impact nutritional outcomes, innovative textual analysis to identify food culture through language, and the selection of interventions conveyed through multiple strategies, including digital means, such as via social media.

Abstract
Sub-standard nutrition is a leading risk factor for many non-communicable diseases and causes 11 million diet-related deaths annually worldwide. Arabic-speaking immigrants and refugees (ASIR) are at high risk for poor nutrition due to socio-cultural and economic-ecological factors. We reviewed the literature to explore the impact of acculturation on ASIR's dietary practices and to investigate barriers vs. facilitators to healthy eating among them. Five electronic databases (PsycINFO, Medline, Anthropology Plus, Embase and Sociology Database) were systematically searched. Only English articles from North America (the US and Canada), Europe, Australia and New Zealand were included. Twenty-four studies were included for evidence synthesis. North America is substantially ahead of Europe in ASIR-nutrition research, whereas Australia and New Zealand are lacking in this type of research. Acculturation into a Western lifestyle was associated with positive and negative changes to ASIR's diet, with increased fruit/vegetable intake, but also a significant increase in consumption of low nutrient, energy-dense foods. Personal barriers to healthful eating related to lack of nutrition awareness and language issues, whereas improved nutrition education was a strong facilitator. Children's preferences and religious dietary proscriptions were key sociocultural barriers to nutritious eating, whereas availability/accessibility of ethnic grocery stores was a powerful facilitator. Within North America, but not Europe, unaffordability of healthy foods and lack of genetically modified food labelling were leading barriers to eating nutritiously. Community-engaged and mixed methods research on diet, nutrition and food (in)security among ASIR is required to inform the design of effective, culturally acceptable dietary interventions. Western societies need to introduce major changes in food policy and financial support for progressive programs to ensure equitable access to nutritious, culturally appropriate food for ASIR and other similar minority groups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood obesity is a global health concern. Early intervention to help parents adopt best practice for infant feeding and physical activity is critical for maintaining healthy weight. Australian governments provide universal free primary healthcare from child and family health nurses (CFHNs) to support families with children aged up to five years and to provide evidence-based advice to parents. This paper aims to examine factors influencing the child obesity prevention practices of CFHNs and to identify opportunities to support them in promoting healthy infant growth. METHODS This mixed methods study used a survey (n = 90) and semi-structured interviews (n = 20) with CFHNs working in two local health districts in Sydney, Australia. Survey data were analysed descriptively; interview transcripts were coded and analysed iteratively. Survey and interview questions examined how CFHNs addressed healthy infant feeding practices, healthy eating, active play and limiting sedentary behaviour during routine consultations; factors influencing such practices; and how CFHNs could be best supported. RESULTS CFHNs frequently advised parents on breastfeeding, introducing solid foods, and techniques for settling infants. They spent less time providing advice on evidence-based formula feeding practices or encouraging physical activity in young children. Although nurses frequently weighed and measured children, they did not always use growth charts to identify those at risk of becoming overweight or obese. Nurses identified several barriers to promoting healthy weight gain in infants and young children, including limited parental recognition of overweight in their children or motivation to change diet or lifestyle; socioeconomic factors (such as the cost of healthy food); and beliefs and attitudes about infant weight and the importance of breastfeeding and physical activity amongst parents and family members. CONCLUSIONS CFHNs require further education and support for their role in promoting optimal child growth and development, especially training in behaviour change techniques to increase parents' understanding of healthy infant weight gain. Parent information resources should be accessible and address cultural diversity. Resources should highlight the health effects of childhood overweight and obesity and emphasise the benefits of breastfeeding, appropriate formula feeding, suitable first foods, responsiveness to infant feeding cues, active play and limiting screen time.

Abstract
A growing, global conversation, regarding realities and challenges that parents experience today is ever-present. To understand recent parent's attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions regarding infant feeding, we sought to systematically identify and synthesize original qualitative research findings. Following the Enhancing Transparency in Reporting the Synthesis of Qualitative Research (ENTREQ) framework, electronic databases were searched with a priori terms applied to title/abstract fields and limited to studies published in English from 2015 to 2019, inclusive. Study quality assessment was conducted using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) checklist, and thematic analyses performed. Of 73 studies meeting inclusion criteria, four major themes emerged. (1) Breastfeeding is best for an infant; (2) Distinct attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions of mothers that breastfeed, and those that could not or chose not to breastfeed, are evident; (3) Infant feeding behaviors are influenced by the socio-cultural environment of the family, and (4) Parent's expectations of education and support addressing personal infant feeding choices from health care providers are not always met. This systematic review, guided by constructs within behavioral models and theories, provides updated findings to help inform the development of nutrition education curricula and public policy programs. Results can be applied within scale-up nutrition and behavioral education interventions that support parents during infant feeding.

Abstract
PROBLEM Migration or resettlement to western nations frequently alters breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices. BACKGROUND Infant feeding practices in traditional societies (originally from non-white countries) are ingrained within customary beliefs and practices. AIM To understand maternal infant feeding experiences pre- and post-resettlement for the benefit of policy and healthcare practice. METHODS This meta-synthesis of qualitative studies on infant feeding experiences of migrant and refugee women in Australia adopted the Noblit and Hare aproach. CINAHL, ScienceDirect, MEDLINE, Social Sciences, SCOPUS and PubMed databases from 1980 to 2018 were searched. Fourteen papers of the 218 retrieved met the inclusion criteria. The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) tool was used to assess the quality of papers and data were synthesised through reciprocal translation. RESULTS One overarching theme emerged: "Fitting-in" to nurture a healthy child in a new homeland. This theme composed of two major themes: beliefs about breast milk and breastfeeding; and beliefs about complementary feeding. In Australia, manufactured foods such as infant formula were often associated with modernism. Western hospital policies were seen as a deterrent to lactation, while familial disconnections and unfamiliarity with healthcare and societal norms undermined maternal infant feeding confidence. New to the scope of migratory infant feeding literature, this synthesis uncovers how migrants and refugees negotiated the western hierarchical structures differently due to issues of power differences. CONCLUSION The 'Fitting-in' notion is best described through the socio-ecological model and maternal capital possessions. This paper calls for a proper 'balancing' between traditional beliefs and the safeguarding of infant health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Infant feeding guidelines are important public health strategies to promote optimal growth, development, and chronic disease prevention, but their effectiveness is contingent upon families' ability to adhere to them. Little is known of adherence to guidelines among nutritionally vulnerable infants, specifically those born very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) (<1500 g). This study investigated whether postdischarge feeding practices for VLBW infants align with current recommendations and explored parental and infant baseline sociodemographics related to these practices. METHODS Prospectively collected data from families of 300 VLBW infants participating in a randomized clinical trial (ISRCTN35317141) were used. Baseline demographics were obtained at enrollment and postdischarge feeding practices via monthly telephone questionnaires to 6 months corrected age (CA). RESULTS At discharge, 4 and 6 months CA, 72%, 39%, and 29% of infants received any amount of mother's milk, respectively; exclusive breast-feeding rates were 49%, 20%, and 6%, respectively. Among infants receiving mother's milk, rates of vitamin D supplementation were ≥83%. Recommendations for introducing solids between 4 and 6 months CA were followed by 71% of the cohort and for iron supplementation by 58%. Overall, 12% of infants adhered to all aforementioned recommendations. Mothers with university degrees were more likely to provide mother's milk, whereas mothers of Middle Eastern/South Asian ethnicity were less likely to provide mother's milk. CONCLUSIONS Low rates of partial and exclusive breast-feeding of VLBW infants to 6 months CA were reported. Overall adherence to iron supplementation was low. Strategies to provide increased support for mothers identified as at-risk should be developed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Interventions to prevent childhood obesity increasingly focus on infant feeding, but demonstrate inconsistent effects. A comprehensive qualitative evidence synthesis is essential to better understand feeding behaviours and inform intervention development. The aim of this study is to synthesize evidence on perceptions and experiences of infant feeding and complementary feeding recommendations. METHODS Databases CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Academic Search Complete, SocIndex and Maternity and Infant Care were searched from inception to May 2017. Eligible studies examined parents' experiences of complementary feeding of children (<2 years). Data were synthesized using thematic synthesis. RESULTS Twenty-five studies met inclusion criteria for review. Four key themes emerged. 'Guidelines and advice' highlights variety and inconsistencies between sources of complementary feeding information. 'Stage of weaning' describes infant feeding as a process involving different stages. 'Knowing and trying' outlines parents' engagement in feeding approaches based on instinct, prior experience or trial and error. 'Daily life' highlights problematic cost and time constraints for parents. DISCUSSION Parents predominantly understand and want to engage in healthy feeding processes. Consideration of infant feeding as a process that changes over time is necessary to support parents. Provision of clear, consistent information and guidance from trusted sources on when, what and how to feed is also essential.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the barriers to following complementary feeding guidelines among Middle Eastern mothers and the cultural considerations of practitioners from an emic perspective. This is a two-phase focused ethnographic assessment of infant feeding among 22 Middle Eastern mothers in Western Canada who had healthy infants aged <1 year. Data were collected through four focus groups conducted in Arabic/Farsi, and were further complemented by comprehensive survey data collected in the second phase of study. Mothers' main criterion for choosing infant foods was whether or not foods were Halal, while food allergens were not causes for concern. Vitamin D supplements were not fed to 18/22 of infants, and mashed dates (Halawi), rice pudding (Muhallabia/Ferni) and sugared water/tea were the first complementary foods commonly consumed. Through constant comparison of qualitative data, three layers of influence emerged, which described mothers' process of infant feeding: socio-cultural, health care system and personal factors. Culture was an umbrella theme influencing all aspects of infant feeding decisions. Mothers cited health care professionals' lack of cultural considerations and lack of relevance and practicality of infant feeding guidelines as the main reasons for ignoring infant feeding recommendations. Early introduction of pre-lacteal feeds and inappropriate types of foods fed to infants among immigrant/refugee Middle Eastern mothers in Canada is cause of concern. Involving trained language interpreters in health teams and educating health care staff on cultural competency may potentially increase maternal trust in the health care system and eventually lead to increased awareness of and adherence to best practices with infant feeding recommendations.
