Adsorptive removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions: Progress of adsorbents development and their effectiveness

Increased levels of heavy metals (HMs) in aquatic environments poses serious health and ecological concerns. Hence, several approaches have been proposed to eliminate/reduce the levels of HMs before the discharge/reuse of HMs-contaminated waters. Adsorption is one of the most attractive processes for water decontamination; however, the efficiency of this process greatly depends on the choice of adsorbent. Therefore, the key aim of this article is to review the progress in the development and application of different classes of conventional and emerging adsorbents for the abatement of HMs from contaminated waters. Adsorbents that are based on activated carbon, natural materials, microbial, clay minerals, layered double hydroxides (LDHs), nano-zerovalent iron (nZVI), graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), metal organic frameworks (MOFs), and zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are critically reviewed, with more emphasis on the last four adsorbents and their nanocomposites since they have the potential to significantly boost the HMs removal efficiency from contaminated waters. Furthermore, the optimal process conditions to achieve efficient performance are discussed. Additionally, adsorption isotherm, kinetics, thermodynamics, mechanisms, and effects of varying adsorption process parameters have been introduced. Moreover, heavy metal removal driven by other processes such as oxidation, reduction, and precipitation that might concurrently occur in parallel with adsorption have been reviewed. The application of adsorption for the treatment of real wastewater has been also reviewed. Finally, challenges, limitations and potential areas for improvements in the adsorptive removal of HMs from contaminated waters are identified and discussed. Thus, this article serves as a comprehensive reference for the recent developments in the field of adsorptive removal of heavy metals from wastewater. The proposed future research work at the end of this review could help in addressing some of the key limitations facing this technology, and create a platform for boosting the efficiency of the adsorptive removal of heavy metals.

Rich oxygen vacancy and amorphous/crystalline ruthenium-doped CoCu -layered double hydroxide electrocatalysts for enhanced oxygen evolution reactions

Reinforcing the development of efficient and robust electrocatalysts is pivotal in addressing the challenges associated with oxygen evolution reactions (OER) in water splitting technology. Here, an amorphous/crystalline low-ruthenium-doped bimetallic layered double hydroxide (LDH) electrocatalyst (a/c-CoCu + Rux-LDH/NF) with massive oxygen vacancy on nickel foam was fabricated via ion-exchange and chemical etching, facilitating efficient OER. Among the various catalyst materials tested, the a/c-CoCu + Ru10-LDH/NF exhibits remarkable performance in the OER when employed in an alkaline electrolyte containing 1 M KOH. Achieving a minimal overpotential at 10 mA cm-2 of 214 mV, exhibiting a low Tafel slope value of 64.3 mV dec-1 and exceptional durability lasting for over 100 h. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the electron structure and d-band center of CoCu-LDH can be effectively regulated through the utilization of a strategy possessing abundant oxygen vacancies and a Ru-doped crystalline/amorphous heterostructure. It will lead to optimized adsorption free energy of reactants and reduced energy barriers for OER. The construction strategy proposed in this paper for catalysts with amorphous/crystalline heterointerfaces offer a novel opportunity to achieve highly efficient OER.

Effect of Interlayer Anions on NiFe Layered Double Hydroxides for Catalytic Ozone Decomposition

NiFe layered double hydroxides (NiFe-LDH) exhibited an outstanding performance and promising application potential for removing ozone. However, the effect of interlayer anions on ozone removal remains ambiguous. Here, a series of NiFe-LDH with different interlayer anions (F-, Cl-, Br-, NO3-, CO32-, and SO42-) were prepared to investigate the effect of the interlayer anion on ozone removal for the first time. It was found that the interlayer anions are a key factor affecting the water resistance of the NiFe-LDH catalyst under moist conditions. NiFe-LDH-CO32- exhibited the best water resistance, which was much better than that of NiFe-LDH containing other interlayer anions. The in situ DIRFTS demonstrates that the carbonates in the interlayer of NiFe-LDH-CO32- will undergo coordination changes through the interaction with water molecules under moist conditions, exposing new metal sites. As a result, the newly exposed metal sites could activate water molecules into hydroxyl groups that act as active sites for catalyzing ozone decomposition. This work provides a new insight into the interlayer anions of LDH, which is important for the design and development of LDH catalysts with excellent ozone removal properties.

Rational Design of Nanosheet Array-Like Layered-Double-Hydroxide-Derived NiCo2O4 In Situ Grown on Reduced-Graphene-Oxide-Coated Nickel Foam for High-Performance Solid-State Supercapacitors

The investigation of high-performance supercapacitors is essential for accelerating the development of energy storage devices. In this work, a 3D hierarchical nanosheet array-like nickel cobaltite/reduced graphene oxide/nickel foam composite (NiCo2O4/rGO/NF) was assembled via an aqueous coprecipitation-hydrothermal strategy assisted by citric acid. Benefiting from a NiCo layered-double-hydroxide precursor with an atomic-level lattice confinement effect of metal ions and effective hybridization with rGO, the NiCo2O4/rGO/NF composite is featured as thin NiCo2O4 nanosheets (∼113.6 nm × 11.2 nm) composed of NiCo2O4 nanoparticles (∼10.9 nm) vertically staggered on the surface of a rGO-modified NF skeleton, leading to high surface area, abundant mesoporous structure, and active site exposure. The as-obtained NiCo2O4/rGO/NF was directly used as a binder-free integrated electrode for supercapacitors, achieving an excellent specific capacitance of 2863.4 F g-1 (1503.3 C g-1) at 1 A g-1, a superior rate performance of 2335.2 F g-1 at 20 A g-1, and a stability retention of 91.7% after 5000 cycles. More impressively, a solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor assembled by the present NiCo2O4/rGO/NF integrated electrode as the positive electrode and commercial activated carbon as the negative electrode achieved a high energy density of 69.2 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 800 W kg-1, and the energy density at a peak power density of 20004 W kg-1 still remained at 48.9 Wh kg-1, also showing a good cycling stability of 87.2% retention over 10000 cycles. The present facile synthesis strategy of the as-obtained NiCo2O4/rGO/NF nanosheet array composite can be used for the design and construction of many other transition-metal oxide/graphene/NF composite materials with excellent structural stability and performance in energy storage and other related areas.

Optimising the acid-base ratio of Mg-Al layered double oxides to enhance CO2 capture performance: the critical role of calcination conditions

The effect of calcination conditions (ramp rate, calcination temperature and time) on the formation of Mg2Al layered double oxides (Mg2Al LDOs) as well as their CO2 capture performance, has been systematically investigated. This study explores novel insights into the intricate relationship between these calcination conditions and the resulting surface characteristics, which play a vital role in CO2 capture efficiency. Notably, it is revealed that a rapid ramp rate (100 °C min-1) significantly increases surface area and hydroxyl concentration, leading to a 69% increase in CO2 capture efficiency compared to slower ramp rate. Conversely, short calcination times (1 h) and fast ramp rates (100 °C min-1) are observed to compromise CO2 adsorption due to the presence of dehydrated LDHs. A critical acid : base ratio of 0.37, achieved from a fast ramp rate (100 °C min-1) at 400 °C for 2 h, was found as a key threshold for optimising surface properties, effectively balancing favourable hydroxyl and less favourable strong acid sites, thereby maximizing CO2 capture performance.

Surface Hydroxyl and Oxygen Vacancies Engineering in ZnSnAl LDH: Synergistic Promotion of Photocatalytic Oxidation of Aromatic VOCs

Photocatalytic oxidation has gained great interest in environmental remediation, but it is still limited by its low efficiency and catalytic deactivation in the degradation of aromatic VOCs. In this study, we concurrently regulated the surface hydroxyl and oxygen vacancies by introducing Al into ZnSn layered double hydroxide (LDH). The presence of distorted Al species induced local charge redistribution, leading to the remarkable formation of oxygen vacancies. These oxygen vacancies subsequently increased the amount of surface hydroxyl and elongated its bond length. The synergistic effects of surface hydroxyl and oxygen vacancies greatly enhanced reactant adsorption-activation and facilitated charge transfer to generate •OH, •O2-, and 1O2, resulting in highly efficient oxidation and ring-opening of various aromatic VOCs. Compared with commercial TiO2, the optimized ZnSnAl-50 catalyst exhibited about 2-fold activity for the toluene and styrene degradation and 10-fold activity for the chlorobenzene degradation. Moreover, ZnSnAl-50 demonstrated exceptional stability in the photocatalytic oxidation of toluene under a wide humidity range of 0-75%. This work marvelously improves the photocatalytic efficiency, stability, and adaptability through a novel strategy of surface hydroxyl and oxygen vacancies engineering.

A karst-inspired hierarchical Mg/Al layered double hydroxide with a high entropy-driven process for interception and storage

Karstification plays a crucial role in forming magnificent scenery, and storing oil, natural gas, mineral resources, and water. Through the inspiration of karstification, a hierarchical layered double hydroxide (LDH) with funnel-like and cave-like structures (called Karst-LDH) is formed by the dissolution of acrylic acid/water solution. Meanwhile, the results of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) show that Karst-LDH has complicated and interconnected internal pipe networks. The actual maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of Karst-LDH reaches 126.38 mg g-1 due to the unique structures, protonation, ligand exchange, ion exchange, and hydrogen bonding, which is over ten times that of general LDH with a regular hexagonal structure. The results of isotherms and thermodynamics also indicate that Karst-LDH conforms to more heterogeneous and multilayer adsorption with a higher entropy-driven process. Karst-LDH exhibits good selectivity for chloride and nitrate ions. The change in the frontier orbital interaction between phosphate and different LDHs is a significant reason for quick macropore transmission, mesopore interception, and finally, phosphate storage in Karst-LDH. This work provides an efficient way for the design and fabrication of high adsorption performance materials with unique karst-type structures, which can be used for multiple fields potentially.

Interplay between Defects and Short-Range Disorder Manipulating the Oxygen Evolution Reaction on a Layered Double Hydroxide Electrocatalyst

Improving the efficiency of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for advancing sustainable and environmentally friendly hydrogen energy. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have emerged as promising electrocatalysts for the OER. However, a thorough understanding of the impact of structural disorder and defects on the catalytic activity of LDHs remains limited. In this work, a series of NiAl-LDH models are systematically constructed, and their OER performance is rigorously screened through theoretical density functional theory. The acquired results unequivocally reveal that the energy increase induced by structural disorder is effectively counteracted at the defect surface, indicating the coexistence of defects and disorder. Notably, it is ascertained that the simultaneous presence of defects and disorder synergistically augments the catalytic activity of LDHs in the context of the OER. These theoretical findings offer valuable insights into the design of highly efficient OER catalysts while also shedding light on the efficacy of LDH electrocatalysts.

Theoretical study on electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction over copper with copper-based layered double hydroxides

The conversion of CO2 into valuable fuels and multi-carbon chemical substances by electrical energy is an effective strategy to solve environmental problems by using renewable energy sources. In this work, the density functional theory (DFT) method is used to reveal the electrocatalytic mechanism of CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) over the surface of CuAl-Cl-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with Cu monoatoms (Cu@CuAl-Cl-LDH), Cu2 diatoms (Cu2@CuAl-Cl-LDH), orthotetrahedral Cu4 clusters (Td-Cu4@CuAl-Cl-LDH) and planar Cu4 clusters (Pl-Cu4@CuAl-Cl-LDH). The active sites, density of states, adsorption energy, charge density difference and free energy are calculated. The results show that CO2RR over all the above five catalysts can generate C2 products. Pl-Cu4@CuAl-Cl-LDH tends to generate C2H5OH, while the remaining four structures all tend to produce C2H4. Cuδ+ favors CO2RR, and Td-Cu4@CuAl-Cl-LDH with a larger positively charged area at the active site has the better electrocatalytic performance among the calculated systems with a maximum step height of 0.78 eV. The selectivity of the products C2H4 and C2H5OH depends on the dehydration of the intermediate *C2H2O to *C2H3O or *CCH; if the dehydration produces *CCH intermediate, the final product is C2H4, and if no dehydration occurs, C2H5OH is produced. This work provides theoretical information and guidance for further rational design of efficient CO2RR catalysts for energy saving and emission reduction.

Effect of Graphene Oxide-Modified CaAl-Layered Double Hydroxides on the Carbon Dioxide Permeation Properties of Fluoroelastomers

This work aimed to investigate the CO2 gas barrier and mechanical properties of fluorine rubber nanocomposites filled with Ca/Al layered hydroxide (graphene oxide [GO]/LDH-Ca2Al) modified by GO. GO/LDH-Ca2Al nanocomposite fillers were prepared by depositing Ca/Al layered hydroxide (LDH-Ca2Al) into the surface of alkalized GO (Al-GO). The prepared GO/LDH-Ca2Al nanocomposite fillers and complexes were characterized by Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for structural and micromorphological characterization. The results showed that GO/LDH-Ca2Al was successfully prepared with strong interactions between Al-GO and LDH, and the compatibility of GO/LDH-Ca2Al nanocomposite fillers with the polymer was significantly improved compared with that of LDH-Ca2Al. Consequently, both the fracture strength (σb) and strain (εb) of GO/LDH-Ca2Al nanocomplexes remarkably increased, and they exhibited excellent mechanical properties. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis were used to characterize the thermal stability of GO/LDH-Ca2Al nanocomposite fillers, and GO/LDH-Ca2Al nanocomposite fillers have better thermal stability than LDH-Ca2Al. The reaction products (S-LDH-Ca2Al and S-GO-Ca2Al) of LDH-Ca2Al and GO/LDH-Ca2Al with CO2 were characterized using XRD and TGA, respectively, and the results show that LDH-Ca2Al reacts readily and chemically with CO2, resulting in a lower diffusion coefficient of CO2 in the LDH-Ca2Al nanocomplexes than that of the GO/LDH-Ca2Al nanocomplexes and leading to the destruction of the laminar structure of LDH-Ca2Al, while GO/LDH-Ca2Al has better CO2 resistance stability. GO/LDH-Ca2Al nanocomplexes exhibited a reduced content of hydroxyl groups with pro-CO2 nature exposed on the surface of LDH-Ca2Al, improving the interfacial interaction between the nanofillers and the rubber matrix and enhancing the dispersion of GO/LDH-Ca2Al in the polymers. Moreover, CO2 in the soluble GO/LDH-Ca2Al nanocomposites was significantly reduced, while the diffusion properties demonstrated weak temperature dependence on solubility. The mechanism of the CO2 gas barrier of polymers filled with GO/LDH-Ca2Al was proposed on the basis of the Arrhenius equation.

The Structure, Preparation, Characterization, and Intercalation Mechanism of Layered Hydroxides Intercalated with Guest Anions

Since the intercalation of anions into layered hydroxides (LHs) has a great impact not only on their nucleation and growth but also on their structure, composition, and size, the intercalation chemistry of LHs has aroused the strong interest of researchers. However, the progress in the fundamental understanding of LHs intercalated with guest anions have not been paralleled by a concomitant development of the preparation and performance improvement of such materials. Considering the guidance of a timely in-depth review for scientists in this area, a systematic introduction about the development that is made on the above-mentioned issues is highly needed but yet missing so far. Herein, recent advances in understanding the chemical composition and structure of LHs intercalated with guest anions are systematically summarized. Meanwhile, typical and emerging bottom-up synthesis methods of LHs intercalated with anions are reviewed, and the potential impact of external reaction parameters on the intercalation of anions into LHs are discussed . Besides, different analytical characterization techniques employed in the examination of guest anion-intercalated LHs are deliberated upon. Finally, although progress is slow in exploring the intercalation mechanism, as many examples as possible are included in this review and inferred the possible intercalation mechanism.

Unravelling the effect of paramagnetic Ni2+ on the 13C NMR shift tensor for carbonate in Mg2-xNixAl layered double hydroxides by quantum-chemical computations

Structural disorder and low crystallinity render it challenging to characterise the atomic-level structure of layered double hydroxides (LDH). We report a novel multi-step, first-principles computational workflow for the analysis of paramagnetic solid-state NMR of complex inorganic systems such as LDH, which are commonly used as catalysts and energy storage materials. A series of 13CO32--labelled Mg2-xNixAl-LDH, x ranging from 0 (Mg2Al-LDH) to 2 (Ni2Al-LDH), features three distinct eigenvalues δ11, δ22 and δ33 of the experimental 13C chemical shift tensor. The δii correlate directly with the concentration of the paramagnetic Ni2+ and span a range of |δ11 - δ33| ≈ 90 ppm at x = 0, increasing to 950 ppm at x = 2. In contrast, the isotropic shift, δiso(13C), only varies by -14 ppm in the series. Detailed insight is obtained by computing (1) the orbital shielding by periodic density-functional theory involving interlayer water, (2) the long-range pseudocontact contribution of the randomly distributed Ni2+ ions in the cation layers (characterised by an ab initio susceptibility tensor) by a lattice sum, and (3) the close-range hyperfine terms using a full first-principles shielding machinery. A pseudohydrogen-terminated two-layer cluster model is used to compute (3), particularly the contact terms. Due to negative spin density contribution at the 13C site arising from the close-by Ni2+ sites, this step is necessary to reach a semiquantitative agreement with experiment. These findings influence future NMR investigations of the formally closed-shell interlayer species within LDH, such as the anions or water. Furthermore, the workflow is applicable to a variety of complex materials.

MoS2/SnS/CoS Heterostructures on Graphene: Lattice-Confinement Synthesis and Boosted Sodium Storage

The development of high-efficiency multi-component composite anode nanomaterials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) is critical for advancing the further practical application. Numerous multi-component nanomaterials are constructed typically via confinement strategies of surface templating or three-dimensional encapsulation. Herein, a composite of heterostructural multiple sulfides (MoS2/SnS/CoS) well-dispersed on graphene is prepared as an anode nanomaterial for SIBs, via a distinctive lattice confinement effect of a ternary CoMoSn-layered double-hydroxide (CoMoSn-LDH) precursor. Electrochemical testing demonstrates that the composite delivers a high-reversible capacity (627.6 mA h g-1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g-1) and high rate capacity of 304.9 mA h g-1 after 1000 cycles at 5.0 A g-1, outperforming those of the counterparts of single-, bi- and mixed sulfides. Furthermore, the enhancement is elucidated experimentally by the dominant capacitive contribution and low charge-transfer resistance. The precursor-based lattice confinement strategy could be effective for constructing uniform composites as anode nanomaterials for electrochemical energy storage.

An Inter-Cooperative Biohybrid Platform to Enable Tumor Ablation and Immune Activation

A biohybrid therapeutic system, consisting of responsive materials and living microorganisms with inter-cooperative effects, is designed and investigated for tumor treatment. In this biohybrid system, S2 O3 2- -intercalated CoFe layered double hydroxides (LDH) are integrated at the surface of Baker's yeasts. Under the tumor microenvironment, functional interactions between yeast and LDH are effectively triggered, resulting in S2 O3 2- release, H2 S production, and in-situ generation of highly catalytic agents. Meanwhile, the degradation of LDH in the tumor microenvironment induces the exposure of the surface antigen of yeast, leading to effective immune activation at the tumor site. By virtue of the inter-cooperative phenomena, this biohybrid system exhibits significant efficacy in tumor ablation and strong inhibition of recurrence. This study has potentially offered an alternative concept by utilizing the metabolism of living microorganisms and materials in exploring effective tumor therapeutics.

Fe(III) Docking-Activated Sites in Layered Birnessite for Efficient Water Oxidation

Non-noble metal catalysts for promoting the sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are essential to efficient water splitting for sustainable hydrogen production. Birnessite has a local atomic structure similar to that of an oxygen-evolving complex in photosystem II, while the catalytic activity of birnessite is far from satisfactory. Herein, we report a novel Fe-Birnessite (Fe-Bir) catalyst obtained by controlled Fe(III) intercalation- and docking-induced layer reconstruction. The reconstruction dramatically lowers the OER overpotential to 240 mV at 10 mA/cm² and the Tafel slope to 33 mV/dec, making Fe-Bir the best of all the reported Bir-based catalysts, even on par with the best transition-metal-based OER catalysts. Experimental characterizations and molecular dynamics simulations elucidate that the catalyst features active Fe(III)-O-Mn(III) centers interfaced with ordered water molecules between neighboring layers, which lower reorganization energy and accelerate electron transfer. DFT calculations and kinetic measurements show non-concerted PCET steps conforming to a new OER mechanism, wherein the neighboring Fe(III) and Mn(III) synergistically co-adsorb OH* and O* intermediates with a substantially reduced O-O coupling activation energy. This work highlights the importance of elaborately engineering the confined interlayer environment of birnessite and more generally, layered materials, for efficient energy conversion catalysis.

Fueling sentinel node via reshaping cytotoxic T lymphocytes with a flex-patch for post-operative immuno-adjuvant therapy

Clinical updates suggest conserving metastatic sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) of breast cancer (BC) patients during surgery; however, the immunoadjuvant potential of this strategy is unknown. Here we leverage an immune-fueling flex-patch to animate metastatic SLNs with personalized antitumor immunity. The flex-patch is implanted on the postoperative wound and spatiotemporally releases immunotherapeutic anti-PD-1 antibodies (aPD-1) and adjuvants (magnesium iron-layered double hydroxide, LDH) into the SLN. Genes associated with citric acid cycle and oxidative phosphorylation are enriched in activated CD8⁺ T cells (CTLs) from metastatic SLNs. Delivered aPD-1 and LDH confer CTLs with upregulated glycolytic activity, promoting CTL activation and cytotoxic killing via metal cation-mediated shaping. Ultimately, CTLs in patch-driven metastatic SLNs could long-termly maintain tumor antigen-specific memory, protecting against high-incidence BC recurrence in female mice. This study indicates a clinical value of metastatic SLN in immunoadjuvant therapy.

Starvation-assisted and photothermal-thriving combined chemo/chemodynamic cancer therapy with PT/MR bimodal imaging

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) reflects a novel reactive oxygen species (ROS)-related cancer therapeutic approach. However, CDT monotherapy is often limited by weak efficacy and insufficient endogenous H₂O₂. Herein, a multifunctional combined bioreactor (MnFe-LDH/MTX@GOx@Ta, MMGT) relying on MnFe-layered double hydroxide (MnFe-LDH) loaded with methotrexate (MTX) and coated with glucose oxidase (GOx)/tannin acid (Ta) is established for applications in H₂O₂ self-supply and photothermal enhanced chemo/chemodynamic combined therapy along with photothermal (PT) /magnetic resonance (MR) dual-modality imaging ability for cancer treatment. Once internalized into tumor cells, MMGT achieves starvation therapy by catalyzing the oxidation of glucose with GOx, accompanied by the regeneration of H₂O₂, enabling a Fenton-like reaction to accomplish GOx catalytic amplified CDT. Moreover, MMGT manifests significant tumor-killing ability through improved CDT performance with outstanding photothermal conversion efficiency (η = 52.2%) under 808 nm laser irradiation. In addition, the release of Mn²⁺ from MnFe-LDH in a solid tumor can significantly enhance T₁-contrast MR imaging signals. Combined with MnFe-LDH-induced PT imaging under 808 nm laser irradiation, a dual-modality imaging directed theranostic nanoplatform has been developed. The present study provides a new strategy to design H₂O₂ self-supply and ROS evolving NIR light-absorption theranostic nanoagent for highly efficient and combined chemo/chemodynamic cancer treatment.

Nanocomposite-based smart fertilizers: A boon to agricultural and environmental sustainability

Fertilizers are indispensable agri-inputs to accomplish the growing food demand. The injudicious use of conventional fertilizer products has resulted in several environmental and human health complications. To mitigate these problems, nanocomposite-based fertilizers are viable alternative options. Nanocomposites, a novel class of materials having improved mechanical strength, barrier properties, and mechanical and thermal stability, are suitable candidates to develop eco-friendly slow/controlled release fertilizer formulations. In this review, the use of different nanocomposite materials developed for nutrient management in agriculture has been summarized with a major focus on their synthesis and characterization techniques, and application aspects in plant nutrition, along with addressing constraints and future opportunities of this domain. Further detailed studies on nanocomposite-based fertilizers are required to evaluate the cost-effective synthesis methods, in-depth field efficacy, environmental fate, stability, etc. before commercialization in the field of agriculture. The present review is expected to help the policy makers and all the stakeholders in the large-scale commercialization and application of nanocomposite-based smart fertilizer products with greater societal acceptance and environmental sustainability in near future.

Activation of peroxymonosulfate by Co-Mg-Fe layered doubled hydroxide for efficient degradation of Rhodamine B

Reactive species serve as a key to remediate the contamination of refractory organic contaminants in advanced oxidation processes. In this study, a novel heterogeneous catalyst, CoMgFe-LDH layered doubled hydroxide (CoMgFe-LDH), was prepared for an efficient activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to oxidize Rhodamine B (RhB). The characterization results showed that CoMgFe-LDH had a good crystallographic structure. Correspondingly, the CoMgFe-LDH/PMS process exhibited good capacity to remove RhB, which was equivalent to degradation performance as homogeneous Co(II)/PMS process. The RhB oxidation in the CoMgFe-LDH/PMS process was well described with pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Additionally, the oxidation process presented an excellent stability, and only 0.9% leaching rate was detected after six sequential reaction cycles at pH 5.0. The effects of initial pH, CoMgFe-LDH dosage, PMS concentration, RhB concentration, and inorganic anions on the RhB degradation were discussed in detail. Quenching experiments showed that sulfate radicals (SO₄^•-) acted as the dominant reactive species. Further, the removal of RhB from simulated wastewater was explored. The removal efficiency of RhB (90 μM) could reach 94.3% with 0.8 g/L of catalyst and 1.2 mM of PMS addition at pH 5.0, which indicated the CoMgFe-LDH/PMS process was also effective in degrading RhB in wastewater.

Nanoparticles loaded with pharmacologically active plant-derived natural products: Biomedical applications and toxicity

Pharmacologically active natural products have played a significant role in the history of drug development. They have acted as sources of therapeutic drugs for various diseases such as cancer and infectious diseases. However, most natural products suffer from poor water solubility and low bioavailability, limiting their clinical applications. The rapid development of nanotechnology has opened up new directions for applying natural products and numerous studies have explored the biomedical applications of nanomaterials loaded with natural products. This review covers the recent research on applying plant-derived natural products (PDNPs) nanomaterials, including nanomedicines loaded with flavonoids, non-flavonoid polyphenols, alkaloids, and quinones, especially their use in treating various diseases. Furthermore, some drugs derived from natural products can be toxic to the body, so the toxicity of them is discussed. This comprehensive review includes fundamental discoveries and exploratory advances in natural product-loaded nanomaterials that may be helpful for future clinical development.

Enhancing the Initial Whiteness and Long-Term Thermal Stability of Polyvinyl Chloride by Utilizing Layered Double Hydroxides with Low Surface Basicity

This study investigated the impact of surface basicity on the performance of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as heat stabilizers for polyvinyl chloride (PVC). LDHs with varying surface basicity were synthesized and characterized using XRD, SEM, BET, and CO₂-TPD. The LDHs were then combined with zinc stearate and dibenzoylmethane to create an environmentally friendly heat stabilizer and added to PVC. The resulting PVC composites were evaluated for thermal stability using the oven-aging method. The results showed that a lower Mg/Al molar ratio (2.0) improved the initial whiteness and long-term thermal stability of PVC composites compared to higher ratios (2.5, 3.0, and 3.5). Replacing Mg with Zn in the LDHs had a similar effect to that of reducing the Mg/Al ratio. Crosslinking the laminae of LDHs with 5% silane coupling agent KH-560 reduced the surface basicity of LDHs by 79%, increasing the chromaticity index, b*, and thermal stability time of PVC composites by 48% and 14%, respectively. A descriptive relationship was established between the structure and surface basicity of LDHs and the initial whiteness and long-term thermal stability of PVC composites.

Confinement of Triple-Enzyme-Involved Antioxidant Cascade in Two-Dimensional Nanostructure

Application of antioxidant enzymes in medical or industrial processes is limited due to their high sensitivity to environmental conditions. Incorporation of such enzymes in nanostructures provides a promising route to obtain highly efficient and robust biocatalytic system to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS). Here, this question was addressed by confinement of superoxide dismutase (SOD), horseradish peroxidase (HRP), and catalase (CAT) enzymes into nanostructures containing polyelectrolyte building blocks (alginate (Alg) and trimethyl chitosan (TMC)) and delaminated layered double hydroxide (dLDH) nanoparticle support. The nanocomposite possessed excellent structural and colloidal stability, while antioxidant tests revealed that the enzymes remained active upon immobilization and the developed composite greatly reduced intracellular oxidative stress in two-dimensional cell cultures. Moreover, it effectively prevented hydrogen peroxide-induced double stranded DNA breaks, which is a common consequence of oxidative stress. The results provide important tools to design complex nanostructures with multienzymatic antioxidant activities for ROS scavenging.

Fabrication of Epitaxially Grown Mg2Al-LDH-Modified Nanofiber Membranes for Efficient and Sustainable Separation of Water-in-Oil Emulsion

Efficient separation of water-in-oil emulsion is of great importance but remains highly challenging since such emulsion contains stable tiny droplets with a diameter less than 20 μm. Herein, we reported the fabrication of a modular fibrous functional membrane using an "in situ growth and covalent functionalization" strategy. The as-prepared PAN@LDH@OTS (PAN = polyacrylonitrile; LDH = layered double hydroxides; and OTS = octadecyltrichlorosilane) membrane possessed an interlaced rough nanostructured surface with intriguing superhydrophobic/superlipophilic properties. When applied for the separation of surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsion (SSE), the PAN@LDH@OTS membrane exhibited an ultrahigh permeation flux of up to 4.63 × 10⁴ L m^-2 h^-1 with an outstanding separation efficiency of >99.92%, outperforming most of the state-of-the-art membranes. In addition, the membrane can maintain a stable permeation flux and superhydrophobic/superlipophilic properties after 20 times of use. Detailed characterization demonstrated that the demulsification of the SSE process was as follows: first, the droplets can be easily adsorbed to the PAN@LDH@OTS membrane due to the improved intermolecular interactions between OTS and the surfactants (Span 80); second, the droplets can be deformed by the electropositive LDH laminate; and third, the deformed tiny emulsion droplets coalesced into large droplets and floated up, and as a result, efficient separation of SSE can be achieved.

Ternary Ca-Mg-Al layered double-hydroxides for synergistic remediation of As, Cd, and Pb from both contaminated soil and groundwater: Characteristics, effectiveness, and immobilization mechanisms

Layered double hydroxides (LDH) are the cost-effective and high-efficiency materials for remediation of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in contaminated soil and groundwater. Herein, the effectiveness and mechanisms of a ternary Ca-Mg-Al LDH (CMAL) for the synergistic remediation of As, Cd, and Pb were investigated in contaminated soils and simulative groundwaters for the first time. The immobilization efficiencies of As, Cd, and Pb in both black soil (BS) and red soil (RS) amended by CMAL at 5 wt% were all > 75%. CMAL amendment transferred more mobile As, Cd, and Pb fractions in soils to immobile species than did Ca-Al LDH and Mg-Al LDH treatments. Furthermore, using a pump-and-treat technology, 82-98% of these 3 PTEs from contaminated groundwater were successfully immobilized in both CMAL treated BS and RS top-soils. Meanwhile, leaching of Ca, Mg, and Al from CMAL was minimal indicating the material was stable. The excellent immobilization performance of CMAL for these PTEs was attributed to the coating of soil microparticles by CMAL nanosheets that allowed complexation of Ca-O-As/Cd or Mg-O-As/Cd/Pb formation, co-precipitation of Ca/Fe-As and Cd(OH)₂, and formation of Ca-bridged ternary complex (FeO-Ca-As/Cd). The adverse effect of oppositive pH/Eh-dependence between As and Cd/Pb was overshadowed by these mechanisms and thus allowed As immobilization. Immobilization of As, Cd, and Pb by CMAL amendment was more favorable for RS soil due to its lower reduction potential and more participation of metal-(hydr)oxides for complexation. Overall, the ternary-LDH is a promising synergistic remediation strategy for multi-PTEs contaminated soil and groundwater.

Lamellar carbon nitride membrane for enhanced ion sieving and water desalination

Membrane-based water treatment processes offer possibility to alleviate the water scarcity dilemma in energy-efficient and sustainable ways, this has been exemplified in filtration membranes assembled from two-dimensional (2D) materials for water desalination purposes. Most representatives however tend to swell or disintegrate in a hydrated state, making precise ionic or molecular sieving a tough challenge. Here we report that the chemically robust 2D carbon nitride can be activated using aluminum polycations as pillars to modulate the interlayer spacing of the conjugated framework, the noncovalent interaction concomitantly affords a well-interlinked lamellar structure, to be carefully distinguished from random stacking patterns in conventional carbon nitride membranes. The conformally packed membrane is characterized by adaptive subnanochannel and structure integrity to allow excellent swelling resistance, and breaks permeability-selectivity trade-off limit in forward osmosis due to progressively regulated transport passage, achieving high salt rejection (>99.5%) and water flux (6 L m^-2 h^-1), along with tunable permeation behavior that enables water gating in acidic and alkaline environments. These findings position carbon nitride a rising building block to functionally expand the 2D membrane library for applications in water desalination and purification scenarios.

Effect of Iron Isomorphic Substitution in Mg:Al and Zn:Al-Layered Double-Hydroxide Structures by Means of First Principle Calculations

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are important components in terrestrial and extra-terrestrial environments. The presence of iron in these minerals provides them a wide potential application in environmental and materials sciences. In this work, the role of Fe in the crystallographic properties of LDHs M²⁺:M³⁺ 2:1 with Mg:(Fe,Al), Mg:Fe, Zn:(Fe,Al), and Zn:Fe is investigated by means of quantum mechanical calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT). Several relative proportions of Fe are studied. The cation ordering of these LDHs has been explored, finding useful insights for experimental synthetic paths of these minerals. The a and b cell parameters increase with the iron concentration. Some diffraction lines at high angle decrease in angle and increase in intensity with the increasing iron concentration. All of them agree with the experimental results. The iron substitutions tend to aggregate.

Insights into memory effect mechanisms of layered double hydroxides with solid-state NMR spectroscopy

Layered double oxides (LDOs) can restore the parent layered double hydroxides (LDHs) structure under hydrous conditions, and this “memory effect” plays a critical role in the applications of LDHs, yet the detailed mechanism is still under debate. Here, we apply a strategy based on ex situ and in situ solid-state NMR spectroscopy to monitor the Mg/Al-LDO structure changes during recovery at the atomic scale. Despite the common belief that aqueous solution is required, we discover that the structure recovery can occur in a virtually solid-state process. Local structural information obtained with NMR spectroscopy shows that the recovery in aqueous solution follows dissolution-recrystallization mechanism, while the solid-state recovery is retro-topotactic, indicating a true “memory effect”. The amount of water is key in determining the interactions of water with oxides, thus the memory effect mechanism. The results also provide a more environmentally friendly and economically feasible LDHs preparation route.

VO4 -Modified Layered Double Hydroxides Nanosheets for Highly Selective Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction to C1 Products

The conversion of CO₂ into high-value added chemicals driven by solar energy is an effective way to solve environmental problems, which is, however, largely restricted by the competition reaction of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and easy electron-hole recombination, etc. Herein, VO₄ -supported ultrathin NiMgV-layered double hydroxide (V/NiMgV-LDH) nanosheets are successfully fabricated, and the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and density function theory (DFT) calculations reveal that VO₄ species are located on the top of V atoms in the NiMgV-LDH laminate. The V/NiMgV-LDH is proved to be highly efficient for the photocatalytic CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂ PR) with high selectivity of 99% for C1 products and nearly no HER (<1%) takes place under visible light. Contrast experiments using NiMgV-LDH as the catalyst for CO₂ PR show a CO selectivity of 71.40% and a H₂ selectivity of 28.11%. Such excellent performance of V/NiMgV-LDH can be attributed to the following reasons: 1) the V/NiMgV-LDH modulates the band structure and promotes the separation of electrons and holes; 2) strong bonding between V/NiMgV-LDH and CO* and H* facilitates the hydrogenation to form CH₄ and inhibits the formation of by-product H₂ at the same time.

Application of functionalized layered double hydroxides for heavy metal removal: A review

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are ionic laminar composites composed of positively charged brucite-like layers with an interlayered region containing charged compensating anions and solvation molecules. Such functional LDHs materials present a strong potential for heavy metal treatment especially for wastewater and soil, due to the large surface area and layered structure. This paper started with the background of techniques for heavy metals treatment and then discussed the potential environmental toxic effects, feasibility, stability of LDH composites. The preparation strategies of LDHs composites, and their application were summarized, followed by main mechanisms involving chelation, complexation, surface precipitation, ion exchange. This work also presented the potential environmental toxic effects, feasibility, stability of LDHs composites, reuse of waste liquid and the ratio adjustment of M²⁺ and N³⁺ for LDHs synthesis. While most efforts focused on improving the absorption capacity of LDHs by composites construction, ignoring the toxicity effects and detailed mechanism investigation. Based on a thorough review of the latest development, the challenges and perspectives would be proposed, offering promising insights on environmental purification via LDHs based materials.

Efficient and reusable catalysis of benzylic C-H oxidation over layered [Co5(OH)6]4+ derivatives

Aerobic oxidation of benzylic C(sp³)-H bonds in a green and heterogeneous manner is a major target in organic catalysis. Herein, we report the synthesis of 3D coordination polymers containing [Co₅(OH)₆]⁴⁺ layers, affording reusable and efficient oxidation of ethylbenezene and tetralin by using O₂ as the oxidant. Moreover, the cleavage of Co^II-carboxylate bonding renders atomically thin cobaltate nanosheets and enhanced catalytic performance. This is one of the top catalytic performances for Co^II-catalyzed benzylic C(sp³)-H oxidation (∼0.02 mol% Co and 76% conversion for nanosheets), ascribed to the exposed, accessible and coordinatively unsaturated Co^II species.

Feasible synthesis of coal fly ash based porous composites with multiscale pore structure and its application in Congo red adsorption

Facing the great challenge that the increasing solid waste fly ash is difficult to treat and utilize properly, this paper reports a class of novel low-cost fly ash porous materials with high interconnected porosity fabricated by a facile foaming process. On this basis, composites with multiscale pore structures from the nanometer to macroscopic scale were designed and constructed by decorating layered double hydroxide (LDH) onto the inner channel surface. Such porous materials with 3D through-hole structures showed high interconnected porosity (up to 77.61%), suitable compressive strength (up to 23.79 MPa) and significant water permeation flux (549.86 m³∙m^-2∙h^-1 at 0.1 MPa). Moreover, the adsorption effect of dosage, initial concentration, pH, temperature and contact time on Congo red (CR) from simulated wastewater was investigated. The composites exhibited a good adsorption efficiency of ∼100% and adsorption capacities of 45.79 mg/g. The adsorption kinetic can be explained well by the pseudosecond-order kinetic equation and isotherm adsorption followed Langmuir isotherm model. This suggests that low-cost and eco-friendly fly ash composites have potential applications in industrial-scale wastewater treatment. This work also provides a general strategy to design and utilize fly ash porous materials for filtration and adsorption.

Cooperative Effect of ZIF-67-Derived Hollow NiCo-LDH and MoS2 on Enhancing the Flame Retardancy of Thermoplastic Polyurethane

In this work, a novel three-dimensional (3D) hollow nickel-cobalt layered double hydroxide (NiCo-LDH) was synthesized using zeolitic imidazole framework-67 (ZIF-67) as a template, and then utilized to functionalize molybdenum disulfide (NiCo-LDH/MoS₂) via electrostatic force. Flame retardant thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composites were prepared by the melt blending method. Compared to pure TPU, NiCo-LDH/MoS₂ filled TPU composite was endowed with a decrease of 30.9% and 55.7% of the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and the peak smoke production rate (PSPR), respectively. Furthermore, the addition of NiCo-LDH/MoS₂ can significantly improve the thermal stability and char yield of the TPU composite. The catalytic carbonization effect and dilution effect of NiCo-LDH, and the barrier effect of MoS₂ nanosheets enable TPU composites with excellent flame retardancy and toxic gas suppression ability.

Characterization of Chemisorbed Species and Active Adsorption Sites in Mg-Al Mixed Metal Oxides for High-Temperature CO2 Capture

Mg-Al mixed metal oxides (MMOs), derived from the decomposition of layered double hydroxides (LDHs), have been purposed as adsorbents for CO₂ capture of industrial plant emissions. To aid in the design and optimization of these materials for CO₂ capture at 200 °C, we have used a combination of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) and density functional theory (DFT) to characterize the CO₂ gas sorption products and determine the various sorption sites in Mg-Al MMOs. A comparison of the DFT cluster calculations with the observed ¹³C chemical shifts of the chemisorbed products indicates that mono- and bidentate carbonates are formed at the Mg-O sites with adjacent Al substitution of an Mg atom, while the bicarbonates are formed at Mg-OH sites without adjacent Al substitution. Quantitative ¹³C NMR shows an increase in the relative amount of strongly basic sites, where the monodentate carbonate product is formed, with increasing Al/Mg molar ratios in the MMOs. This detailed understanding of the various basic Mg-O sites presented in MMOs and the formation of the carbonate, bidentate carbonate, and bicarbonate chemisorbed species yields new insights into the mechanism of CO₂ adsorption at 200 °C, which can further aid in the design and capture capacity optimization of the materials.

Layered double hydroxides functionalized by carbonaceous materials: from preparation to energy and environmental applications

Along with the exponential demand for energy and pollution-free-environment, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have gained extensive explorations because of their diverse nanostructures and tunable elemental compositions. However, the applications of LDHs are hindered by their poor activity, sluggish mass transfer, and aggregation. LDHs functionalized by carbonaceous materials (CMs) (LDH-CM) are expected to overcome the above disadvantages and even generate more excellent performance. This review first analyzes the research evolvement of LDH-CM composites during the past 25 years. Next, the advantages of LDH-CM composites are highlighted, such as morphology optimization, high electrical conductivity, more stable, good heat, and mass transfer performance. Following the synthetic strategies, including chemical assembly of LDHs and CMs, direct growth of LDH on CMs (two-step nucleation and growth and surface-confined growth) and direct CM formation on LDHs are fully discussed. Then, the recent progress achieved in LDH-CM composites for the application of energy storage and environmental protection is summarized in detail. In particular, the review illustrates the reasons why these constructing strategies can improve the performance of LDH-CM composites. Finally, challenges and future research prospects of LDH-CM composites are highlighted.

Ternary NiCeCo-Layered Double Hydroxides Grown on CuBr2@ZIF-67 Nanowire Arrays for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Ternary layered double-hydroxide-based active compounds are regarded as ideal electrode materials for supercapacitors because of their unique structural characteristics and excellent electrochemical properties. Herein, an NiCeCo-layered double hydroxide with a core-shell structure grown on copper bromide nanowire arrays (CuBr₂@NCC-LDH/CF) has been synthesized through a hydrothermal strategy and calcination process and utilized to fabricate a binder-free electrode. Due to the unique top-tangled structure and the complex assembly of different active components, the prepared hierarchical CuBr₂@NCC-LDH/CF binder-free electrode exhibits an outstanding electrochemical performance, including a remarkable areal capacitance of 5460 mF cm^-2 at 2 mA cm^-2 and a capacitance retention of 88% at 50 mA cm^-2 as well as a low internal resistance of 0.163 Ω. Moreover, an all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) installed with CuBr₂@NCC-LDH/CF and activated carbon electrodes shows a high energy density of 118 Wh kg^-1 at a power density of 1013 W kg^-1. Three assembled ASCs connected in series can operate a multifunctional display for over three and a half hours. Therefore, this innovative work provides new inspiration for the preparation of electrode materials for supercapacitors.

Characterization of Monochromate and Hemichromate AFm Phases and Chromate-Containing Ettringite by 1H, 27Al, and 53Cr MAS NMR Spectroscopy

The calcium aluminate hydrate AFm and AFt phases formed upon hydration of Portland cement have an important role in the stabilization and solidification of hazardous chromate ions in hardened cement. AFm monochromate (Ca4[Al(OH)6]2(CrO4)·12H2O), AFm hemichromate (Ca4[Al(OH)6]2(CrO4)0.5(OH)·12H2O) and the chromate-containing AFt phase, Ca6[Al(OH)6]2-(CrO4)3·24H2O, were synthesized and investigated by 1H, 27Al, and 53Cr MAS NMR spectroscopy. 27Al quadrupolar coupling parameters (CQ, ηQ) and isotropic chemical shifts (δiso) were determined for the three phases, including two distinct Al sites in chromate-AFt, as observed by 27Al MAS and MQMAS NMR. Two dominant peaks are apparent in the 1H MAS NMR spectra of each of the phases. For the AFm phases, these resonances are assigned to framework hydroxyl groups (1.7–2.0 ppm) and water molecules/hydroxyls (5.0–5.5 ppm) in the interlayer. For chromate-AFt, the peaks are ascribed to framework hydroxyl groups in the [Ca6Al2(OH)12]6+ columns (~1.4 ppm) and water molecules (~4.8 ppm) associated with the Ca ions. 53Cr MAS NMR spectra acquired at 22.3 T for the samples show a narrow resonance for both chromate AFm phases, whereas indications of three distinct Cr resonances are apparent for the chromate AFt. The absence of any second-order quadrupolar effects in the 53Cr NMR spectra strongly suggests that the chromate ions are highly mobile in the anionic sites of the AFm and AFt structures. The NMR data reported in this work are in agreement with the reported crystal structures for the chromate AFm and AFt phases and may be useful for identification and characterization of chromate fixation in cementitious systems, complementing information gained from conventional powder X-ray diffraction studies.
