Abstract
Introduction The health-related consequences of work stress are as broadly studied in the health care sector as they are elsewhere. However, behaviors such as underperforming at work, being less engaged at work, being habitually absent from work without good reason, intending to take unpaid leave, changing jobs or leaving the profession as consequences or correlates of stress and reward frustration at work are largely underresearched, particularly in Switzerland and in health care and across different health professions. Methods Cross-sectional survey data collected from the workforces of six public hospitals and rehabilitation clinics in German-speaking Switzerland were used for this observational study. A total of 1,441 health care workers from various professions participated in the survey. The study focused on effort-reward imbalance (ERI) as a work stress measure and on six different withdrawal behaviors. Relative frequencies stratified by health professions for all study variables (exposure, confounders, and outcomes) and multiple-adjusted odds ratios as measures of association were calculated. Results The findings revealed frequent work stress or rather widespread ERI among health professionals (49%). The results further revealed strong to very strong dose-response relationships between work stress levels and the chance or risk of withdrawal from work. Compared with the least stressed individuals, the most stressed individuals were at significantly increased risk for reduced job performance (aOR = 5.2), low work engagement (aOR = 4.4), increased work absenteeism (aOR = 2.2), and intentions to take unpaid leave (aOR = 3.1), to change the job (aOR = 35.0) or to leave the profession (aOR = 12.3). Conclusion Highly prevalent reward frustration in Swiss health care needs to be reduced to overcome inner resignation and resistance and to prevent health professionals from withdrawing from work, and health care from high follow-up costs above and beyond mere absences from work or high turnover.

Abstract
The long-tern implications of stress during university for individuals' mental health are not well understood so far. Hence, we aimed to examine the potential effect of stress while studying at university on depression in later life. We analysed data from two waves of the longitudinal Study on Occupational Allergy Risks. Using the 'work overload' and 'proving oneself' scales of the Trier Inventory for Chronic Stress and the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2), participants reported chronic stress during university (2007-2009, mean age 22.2 years, T1) and depressive symptoms ten years later (2017-2018, mean age 31.6 years, T2). We performed linear regression analyses to explore the association between stress during university (T1) and later depressive symptoms (T2). Participants (N = 548, 59% female) indicated rather low levels of stress and depression (PHQ-2 mean score: 1.14 (range: 0-6)). We observed evidence for a linear association between overload at T1 and depression at T2 (regression coefficient (B) = 0.270; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.131 to 0.409; standardised regression coefficient (β) = 0.170). Our analyses yielded evidence for an association between chronic stress while studying and risk of depressive symptoms later in life. This finding underlines the importance of implementing sustainable preventive measures against stress among students.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ph.D. students have been shown to report a lower mental health status compared to the general population. However, not much is known about the impact of psychosocial work stressors that could contribute to their increased risks of mental health symptoms. This study aims firstly to assess levels of psychosocial stressors, perceived stress, and mental health symptoms in Ph.D. students. Second, it investigates which psychosocial stressors are most strongly associated with mental health symptoms and perceived stress. METHODS One self-reported questionnaire was distributed among Ph.D. students at one university in Germany, in summer 2023 (T1) and winter 2023/2024 (T2). Psychosocial stressors were assessed with the short version of the effort-reward imbalance (ERI) questionnaire and with the 16-item DYNAMIK questionnaire. Mental health symptoms were assessed with the 12-item-version of the general health questionnaire (GHQ-12). Perceived stress levels were assessed with the 10-item perceived stress scale (PSS). Within a cross-sectional study design, multiple linear regression analyses were performed in two study samples (n = 267 at T1; n = 244 at T2). RESULTS Ph.D. students reported an imbalance between effort and reward in both study samples (T1: M = 1.34, SD = 0.45; T2: M = 1.27, SD = 0.52). Effort-reward-ratio, boundary permeability, and leader support were associated with mental health symptoms and perceived stress in both study samples, when controlled for age and gender. For example, effort-reward-ratio showed a meaningful impact on mental health symptoms for the study sample at T2 (B = 3.85; p < .05, adj. R2 = 0.288). DISCUSSION Both study samples showed high prevalence of mental health symptoms and effort-reward imbalance also in comparison to other research findings. An imbalance between effort and reward, boundary permeability and leader support show the most strongly associations with mental health symptoms and perceived stress. Future longitudinal studies could help to support our findings in terms of a causal stressor-strain association. Universities should focus on mental health of Ph.D. students and direct their support towards promoting student-supervisor relationships and clear guidelines for Ph.D. students' working hours.

Abstract
Background: Nurses in emergency rooms face high levels of psychological stress during their work, which is why they have an increased risk of burnout. The aim of this pilot study was to determine the extent to which effort-reward imbalance (ERI) at work is connected to the risk of burnout among emergency nurses. Methodology: Thirty-five nurses from the central emergency department of a maximum care provider, aged 35.1 ± 0.6 years, voluntarily participated in this pilot study. ERI was recorded using the Effort-Reward Imbalance questionnaire. The nurses were then divided into two groups: the nonrisk group (ERI ratio < 1, n = 19) and the risk group (ERI ratio ≥ 1, n = 16). The burnout dimensions were determined via the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and the burnout risk was then determined. Results: Nurses in the nonrisk group were significantly less emotionally exhausted (1.6 ± 1.1 points) and had a lower overall risk of burnout (MBI total score 1.2 ± 0.67 points) than the nurses of the risk group. (3.3 ± 1.5 and 2.2 ± 1.2 points, respectively). Eighteen nurses from the total sample had a medium or high risk of burnout. There is a correlation between the risk of burnout and the ERI ratio (r = 0.392, p < 0.05) and the ERI scale "job promotion" (r = -0.462, p < 0.05). Conclusions: The pilot study provides indications of a relationship between effort-reward imbalance at work and burnout risk in emergency nurses. These findings may improve rewards for nurses in the form of increased salary and/or recognition to reduce the risk of burnout among employees and avoid turnover. Further research is needed to investigate the influence of preventive measures on the risk of burnout and gratification crises, particularly with regard to the influence of status and recognition on the risk of burnout.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, with disparities observed between males and females. Psychosocial work exposures (PWE), including workload, job control, reward and long working hours, are associated with CVD development. Despite higher prevalence among females, the association with CVD is consistently observed in males, with limited explanations for these differences. This study aimed to examine the consideration of sex and gender in prospective studies within systematic reviews on PWE - specifically, the demand-control model, the effort-reward imbalance model, and long working hours - and CVD. Conducting a systematic review, we assessed sex and gender considerations using criteria from the Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER) guidelines. While most studies recognized potential sex and gender differences in the associations between PWE and CVD, only about half of the 28 studies that included both sexes (15 studies) analyzed females and males separately. Moreover, few studies included criteria for sex- and gender-based analyses. Less than half of the studies (23 studies) incorporated a sex and/or gender perspective to discuss observed differences and similarities between men and women. Although there is a rising trend in integrating sex and gender considerations, significant gaps persist in methodologies and reporting, highlighting the need for comprehensive incorporation of sex and gender considerations to bolster CVD prevention strategies and policies.

Abstract
Introduction To systematically evaluate the incidence of effort-reward imbalance among nurses. Method PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, CNKI, WanFang Data, and VIP databases were searched to collect studies on the incidence of effort-reward imbalance among nurses. The search timeframe was from database construction to December 2023. Two researchers independently screened the literature, extracted the data, and evaluated the risk of bias in the included studies. The meta-analysis was performed using Stata 17.1 software. Results A total of 60 studies, including 79,644 participants, were included. The prevalence of effort-reward imbalance among nurses was 52.3% (95% CI: 44.9-59.7%). In terms of time, the incidence of effort-reward imbalance among nurses before 2010 (26.6, 95%CI: 6.8-46.4%) and in 2010-2015 (42.4, 95%CI: 32.1-52.8%), 2016-2020 (60.2, 95%CI: 49.6-70.7%), and 2021-2023 (65.0, 95%CI: 51.5-78.4%) continued to increase. Geographically, Asia (57.4, 95%CI: 51.8-63.1%) nurses had a relatively higher prevalence of effort-reward imbalance. In terms of department, the incidence of effort-reward imbalance among nurses was relatively higher in operating rooms (71.8, 95%CI: 64.5-79.0%), ICU (64.6, 95%CI: 27.7-100.0%), emergency (68.7, 95%CI: 62.9-74.5%), and pediatrics (65.8, 95%CI: 32.2-99.3%). Discussion The prevalence of nurse effort-reward imbalance is high, and there are differences in its prevalence across time, geography, department. Hospital administrators should actively take measures to effectively prevent and reduce the effort-reward imbalance for nurses, especially for nurses in Asia, operating rooms, emergency pediatrics and ICU departments. Abstract
A distinction can be drawn between healthcare, where compassion is evident, and the functional delivery of health services. Measures to curb the spread of COVID-19, such as personal protective equipment, telehealth, and visiting restrictions created barriers to service delivery and put pressure on healthcare. Through 37 qualitative interviews with NHS senior managers (n = 11), health professionals (n = 26), and 5 focus group discussions with members of the public (n = 26), we explored experiences of the everyday ethical tensions created as services were being re-established following the acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in England. Our analysis enriches an understanding of compassionate care as outlined in NHS operational documents - covering the emotional, moral, and relational components of healthcare beyond the functionalities of treatment. From this analysis, we consider the normative standards underpinning NHS healthcare, concluding that, wherever possible, offering compassionate healthcare to patients and their families should be facilitated, and health professionals should themselves be compassionately supported in the workplace. Our findings foreground the need to consider the consequences of the short-term adoption of a functional treatment approach, including strategies that support health professionals and inform the public, to avoid the long-term damage caused by the fracturing of compassionate healthcare.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous literature has highlighted high rates of burnout among doctors and nurses in healthcare settings. Non-clinical and support staff such as administrative, housekeeping and managerial staff are also exposed to the stressors of a health care setting, but fewer studies report on their experiences. Therefore, the aim of this research is to examine occupational stress in all staff working in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in Ireland and identify risk and protective factors. METHOD Fifty-nine clinical and non-clinical staff (44% response rate) were surveyed. Participants completed the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) and the Effort Reward Imbalance scale, as well as survey-specific questions. RESULTS Both clinical and non-clinical staff were found to experience moderate or high rates of work-related, personal and patient-related burnout (57.6%, 52.2% and 50.8%, respectively). Univariate general linear modelling showed an association between total CBI scores and effort reward index (B = 64 306, t = 3.430, p = 0.001); overcommitment (B = 1.963, t = 3.061, p = 0.003); and an unwillingness to work in CAMHS (B = 28.429, t = 3.247, p = 0.002). CONCLUSION Pre-pandemic levels of stress were high among clinical and non-clinical staff surveyed. Given the anticipated increased demand on CAMHS post COVID-19, urgent action is needed to protect all staff from intolerable levels of occupational stress and burnout.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies show that a disadvantaged socioeconomic position (SEP) and psychosocial stress at work are both independently associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). But it is not clear if the effect of stress at work on CVD varies by SEP. METHODS We used baseline and follow-up data from the French population-based cohort study CONSTANCES, including 48 383 employed women and men aged 30-70 years. Three SEP indicators (education, income, occupation), stressful psychosocial work as measured by effort-reward imbalance, pre-existing CVD and confounders were assessed at baseline, and incident non-fatal CVD events reported during annual follow-up (up to five follow-ups) were used as outcomes. The effect modification hypothesis was both investigated on an additive and multiplicative scale. RESULTS SEP was inversely associated with CVD risk (eg, for low vs high income, OR 1.28 (95% CI 1.12 to 1.46)), and for all three components of stressful work CVD risks were significantly increased (eg, for effort-reward ratio OR 1.26 (95% CI 1.17 to 1.36)). Employees with a disadvantaged SEP showed moderately increased effect sizes of stressful work on CVD. However, no clear evidence of an effect modification was found. CONCLUSIONS Disadvantaged SEP and stressful work contribute to higher CVD risk in this cohort. Despite moderately increased effect sizes for disadvantaged SEP groups, no evidence was found to support an effect modification hypothesis.

Abstract
Background Protecting and improving the personal health of healthcare workers is critical to improving the efficiency and quality of care. To effectively meet the needs of the emergency service system, emergency physicians need to be in a good state of health. However, due to the special characteristics of work in the emergency department, emergency physicians have to face various psychosocial pressures, which may bring them physical and mental distress. Therefore, this study aims to explore the emergency physicians' self-rated health status and its related factors, to provide an empirical study for the improvement of emergency physicians' self-rated health status. Method A cross-sectional survey of emergency physicians was conducted in China between July and August 2018. The questionnaires contained items on demographic characteristics, behavioral lifestyle and job-related factors, as well as self-rated health. The generalized ordinal logistic model was used to identify related factors of emergency physicians' self-rated health status. Results Only 14.4% of Chinese emergency physicians considered themselves in good health status. Results showed that emergency physicians who never exercised (β = 0.76, p < 0.001) and exercised <2 times per week (β = 0.34, p < 0.001) were more likely to report poor health status. In addition, emergency physicians with good sleep quality (β = -3.84, p < 0.001), fewer night work shifts (β = -0.47, p < 0.001), less frequency of visiting patients (β = -0.33, p < 0.001), never suffered the workplace violence (β = -0.47, p < 0.001) and never perceived effort-reward imbalance (β = -0.68, p < 0.001) were more likely to report good self-rated health. Conclusion Chinese emergency physicians' self-rated health status was not optimistic. Self-rated health is associated with multiple domains of work-related factors and personal lifestyle. Feasible measures should be taken to improve the working environment of emergency physicians, develop acceptable shift schedules for employees, monitor and maintain the health status of emergency department physicians.

Abstract
Chronic stress at work is ubiquitous in modern societies. However, its influence on atopic dermatitis (AD) has hardly been investigated. This study aimed to elucidate the association between work-related stress and AD via a longitudinal study. The analysis comprised data from three phases (2002-2003, 2007-2009, 2017-2018) of the prospective Study on Occupational Allergy Risks (SOLAR), including 1,240 young adults aged 16 to 18 years at baseline (61% female) who were originally recruited for the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood Phase II in 1995-1996. AD was assessed at all three phases based on self-reports of a physician's diagnosis and symptoms. Work-related stress was measured at all three periods using the work discontent and work overload scales from the Trier Inventory for the Assessment of Chronic Stress with adaptions to school and university. Generalized estimating equations were used to analyze the association between stress and AD, treating work discontent and work overload first as continuous and then as categorical exposure variables. We observed 50 AD cases (4%) at SOLAR I, 48 (4%) at SOLAR II, and 42 (3%) at SOLAR III. A one-point increase in the work discontent score was associated with an odds ratio (OR) for AD of 1.05 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.00-1.10). The respective increase in the work overload score led to an OR of 1.03 (95% CI, 0.99-1.06). In the categorical analysis, there was no clear indication of elevated odds of AD in the highest vs. lowest exposure group (4th vs. 1st quartile: OR, 1.53; 95% CI, 0.92-2.53 for work discontent; OR, 1.38, 95% CI, 0.83-2.27 for work overload). Altogether, we observed limited to no evidence for an association between work-related stress and AD. Our study's ability to detect stronger evidence may have been compromised by shortcomings such as nondifferential misclassification of the outcome or insufficient statistical precision due to small numbers of AD cases. Another explanation could be that AD predominantly becomes evident in childhood, not in adulthood.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Family doctor contract services was launched in Sichuan province in 2016. The focus was mainly on developing primary health care services but paying less attention to the work stress and job satisfaction of in-service family doctors. OBJECTIVE This study aims to explore the influencing factors of job satisfaction, and the relation between work stress indicators and job satisfaction among family physicians. METHODS An analytical online cross-sectional survey was performed among 1,105 family doctors from 23 districts and counties in Chengdu. Self-administered questionnaire was completed. Sociodemographic factors, work stress measured by Effort-Reward Imbalance (ERI)scale, and job satisfaction assessed by the short Chinese version of the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) were collected in this study. A statistical analysis and hierarchical linear regression analysis were performed to explore the influencing factors and the correlations among related variables. RESULTS The overall mean MSQ score was 52.01 ± 13.23. Analysis of doctor satisfaction indicated that age, education, job rank, type of institution, years of working and monthly income were statistically significant (P < 0.05). There were negative correlation coefficients between general job satisfaction and effort/reward ratio (ERR) (r = -0.130, P < 0.001) and overcommitment (r = -0.615, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION The level of job satisfaction among family doctors was considerable low. Age, education, job rank, type of institution, years of working and monthly income were influencing factors of job satisfaction. ERI and overcommitment had a negative correlation with general job satisfaction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Work-related stress (WRS) is significantly associated with health-related quality of life (HRQoL), but the amounts of evidence on differences of effort-reward imbalance (ERI) and job strain index (JSI) remain sparse and have limited generalizability. Therefore, we aimed to assess the association between ERI and JSI with HRQoL and assess the mediation effect of social support (JS) and over-commitment (OC) on this association in Taiwan's civil servants. MATERIAL AND METHODS A cross-sectional national survey was given to registered civil servants in Taiwan - 20 046 civil servants from 647 institutions were enrolled using multistage stratified random cluster sampling. A web-questionnaire collected demographic information, job characteristics, and different indexes of ERI and job-control-demand-support (JCDS) models. Structural equation model (SEM) was used to examine the association between ERI and JSI with HRQoL, and the mediation effect of JS and OC on the associations. RESULTS In the ERI model, ERI and OC were consistently negatively associated with the mental component score (MCS) (r = -0.46 and r = -0.37) and physical component score (PCS) (r = -0.45 and r = -0.34), which were higher than job demand (r = -0.28 and r = -0.22) and JSI (r = -0.38 and r = -0.29). Using hierarchical multiple regression analyses, ERI was significantly correlated with MCS and PCS, which was consistently higher than JSI. The ERI and JSI were significantly correlated with MCS (β = -0.170 and β = -0.140) and PCS (β = -0.150 and β = -0.082) using SEM analysis, whereas ERI was considerably higher than in JSI. In addition, OC and JS mediated the association between The ERI and JSI with HRQoL. CONCLUSIONS We found the ERI index is significantly correlated with HRQoL superior to JSI, in particular among Taiwan civil servants. Further longitudinal studies are needed to determine the causality and spatiotemporal relation of these differences. Int J Occup Med Environ Health. 2022;35(4):425-36.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the number one cause of death, and there is evidence that work exposures could be associated with their development. This study aimed to systematically review observational studies of adults exposed to job strain, effort-reward imbalance, long working hours, job insecurity, shift work, and occupational noise, and assess the association of those work exposures with CVDs. METHODS The Navigation Guide framework was applied. The population were adults of working age (18-65), and cohort and case-control studies were included. The work exposures were job strain, effort-reward imbalance, long working hours, job insecurity, shift work, and occupational noise. The outcomes were cerebrovascular diseases, ischaemic heart disease, and hypertensive diseases. The selection, data extraction, risk of bias assessment, and quality assessment were carried out by two reviewers independently and disagreements were solved by a third reviewer or by consensus. The synthesis of the results was done by applying the 'vote counting based on direction' method, and the results were summarized in an effect direction plot. The strength of the evidence for every risk factor and CVD was defined by consensus. RESULTS A total of 17 643 papers were initially identified in the literature search, but after applying the filters by title and abstract, and full text, 86 studies were finally included. From the included studies, sufficient evidence was found of the harmfulness of job strain for cerebrovascular disease and ischemic heart disease. Furthermore, there was sufficient evidence of the harmfulness of shift work for ischemic heart disease. Evidence of no relationship was found between long working hours and shift work with ischaemic heart disease and hypertensive disease, respectively. The other associations of work exposures and CVDs had limited or inadequate evidence of harmfulness. CONCLUSIONS In this comprehensive review, there was sufficient evidence of a harmful relationship between job strain, shift work, and CVDs. For the other work exposures, more high-quality studies are needed. In order to improve current prevention strategies for CVDs, the findings of this review imply that job strain and shift work are work exposures that constitute additional risk factors that could be approached as targets for worksite interventions. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the individual impact of social determinants of health disparities (SDHD) on surgical outcomes following orthopaedic trauma surgery. DESIGN Retrospective Cohort Study. SETTING Mariner Claims Database. PATIENTS Inclusion criteria were patients 18-85 years of age, undergoing surgery for hip fractures or ankle fractures from 2010 to 2018. INTERVENTION Patients were divided based on SDHD using International Classification of Diseases 9 and International Classification of Diseases 10 codes. Those with SDHD were propensity-score matched with those who did not have any disparities with respect to age, gender, Charlson comorbidity index, tobacco use, and obesity (body mass index >30 kg/m2). OUTCOMES Ninety-day major medical complications, infection, readmission, and revisions within 1 year. RESULTS Patients with educational deficiencies had increased rates of readmission and major complications compared with those without disparities following hip and ankle fracture management. Moreover, economic disparities were associated with an increased risk of readmission and revision following hip fracture surgery and infection and readmission following ankle fracture surgery. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSIONS This study emphasizes the large impact of SDHD on patients' outcomes following surgery and the importance of proper follow-up interventions to optimize patient care. Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of personal environment suitability and the work environment of luxury hotels on psychological capital and innovation behavior. Seven hypotheses were proposed. First, the work environment will have a positive effect on psychological capital. Second, personal environment suitability will have a positive effect on psychological capital. Third, the work environment will have a positive impact on innovation behavior. Fourth, the suitability of one’s environment will have a positive impact on one’s innovation behavior. Fifth, psychological capital will have a positive (+) effect on innovation behavior. Sixth and seventh, work environment and personal environment suitability will have a positive (+) effect on innovation behavior through psychological capital. To achieve the purpose of this study, eligible respondents (n = 327; 214 male and 113 female) were recruited from four-star hotels or higher located in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi-do and then evaluated for an online survey method. Hypothesis verification was conducted through CFA and structural equation model analysis. As a result of the analysis, all hypotheses except Hypothesis 3 were adopted. Personal environmental suitability drives innovation behavior at the organizational level, but programs that recognize work environment fit are also needed. This study has an advantage in that psychological capital has a mediating role in the relationship between work environment, personal environment suitability, and innovation behavior. As a result, it is suggested that hotels need to understand the psychological state of their members and manage their responses and attitudes. This study also suggests that personal environment suitability leads to organizational-level innovation behavior, but programs for work environment suitability are also needed.

Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to investigate reciprocity among university students in low-resource settings using a convergent mixed-methods approach in Jordan. The study operationalized the effort-reward imbalance (ERI) model which is a sociological framework used to predict occupational-related health outcomes. The basic theory of ERI model assumes that an imbalance of effort and reward predicts adverse health outcomes. Methods The research involved two studies, Study I (n = 833) to quantitatively measure ERI and Study II to collect qualitative data (n = 44) on the drivers of ERI among university students. In Study I, a modified Arabic version of the ERI questionnaire was used. The study measured ERI and investigated the reliability and validity of the Arabic version of the ERI model questionnaire. In Study II, data were collected from focus groups and personal interviews and thematic analysis was used. Results The results suggested that ERI was associated with poor academic performance (OR=2.31, 95% CI 1.60–3.32), absenteeism (OR=1.66, 95% CI 1.21–2.27), low exercise level (OR=2.02, 95% CI 1.49–2.74) and poor self-reported health (OR=1.12, 95% CI 1.08–1.30). Three major themes emerged, namely high academic load, financial pressures and negative influence on the students' performance, wellbeing and health to explain effort-reward imbalance. Conclusions Results suggest that ERI among university students is multi-faceted and is not bound only to academic-related demands and that the extrinsic factors such as the economic context of Jordan is among drivers of ERI.

Abstract
Mental health problems are prevalent among migrant workers in China. The present study examined the prevalence of mental health problems (depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation) among migrant workers in China, and identified the work-related factors associated with their mental health problems based on the Demand-Control and Effort-Reward Imbalance Model. A total of 807 migrant workers were recruited from three factories in Shenzhen using stratified randomized sampling. The prevalence of moderate-to-severe anxiety, mild-to-severe depression and suicidal ideation in the past year was 17.8%, 60.3% and 4.8% respectively. Results from stepwise regression analyses reported that role conflict and effort were risk factors, whereas utilization of job skills and reward were protective factors for anxiety and depression. Social support was also associated with lower level of depression. Effort was the only factor associated with suicidal ideation in the stepwise analysis. Interventions to improve their mental health are warranted and they should work to reduce their role conflict, improve effort-reward balance, promote utilization of skills and increase social support.

Abstract
CONTEXT Organizational justice has been linked to lower risk of several chronic conditions among employees, but less is known about the long-term mechanisms underlying this risk reduction. OBJECTIVE To assess whether self-reported organizational justice is associated with individual and composite long-term metabolic trajectories. DESIGN Twenty-five-year follow-up of the Whitehall II prospective cohort study. SETTING Middle-aged public servants from the United Kingdom. PARTICIPANTS Data on 8182 participants were used. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Levels of 11 anthropometric, glycemic, lipid, and blood pressure biomarkers were measured at 5 timepoints (1991-2013). We used generalized estimating equations and group-based trajectory modeling to investigate the relationship between organizational justice and biomarker trajectories. RESULTS High vs low organizational justice were associated with lower waist (-1.7 cm) and hip (-1 cm) circumference, body mass index (-0.6 kg/m2), triglycerides (-1.07 mmol/L), and fasting insulin (-1.08 µIU/mL) trajectories. Two latent metabolic trajectory clusters were identified: a high- and a low-risk cluster. High organizational justice (vs low) were associated with belonging to the low-risk cluster (pooled odds ratio = 1.47). The low-risk cluster demonstrated lower baseline levels of most biomarkers and better glycemic control, whereas the high-risk cluster showed higher baseline levels of most biomarkers, glycemic deterioration, but also greater improvements in lipid levels over time. CONCLUSIONS People with high organizational justice had more favorable long-term cardiometabolic biomarker patterns than those with low organizational justice, indicating a potential mechanism contributing to the lower risk of chronic diseases in the first group. Further intervention studies are warranted to determine whether improvement of organizational justice might improve long-term health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Focusing on employees with psychological strain, this research draws on Fredrickson's 'undoing hypothesis' to examine praise and recognition from one's supervisor as an organizational resource. OBJECTIVE A model is tested in which psychological strain is a mediator in the positive relationship between role demands and employees' intentions to take sick leave and seek medical advice, and positions supervisor praise and recognition as a buffer of psychological strain on such intentions. METHODS The model was tested using two Australian samples in the tourism sector, consisting of motel workers (n = 104) and museum workers (n = 168). RESULTS For museum workers, but not motel workers, there was a positive indirect effect of each role demand on sick leave intentions through psychological strain that weakened as a function of supervisor praise and recognition. The proposed moderated mediated model was supported for both samples in regards to intentions to seek medical advice. CONCLUSIONS This research contributes new evidence regarding the antecedents of employees' intentions to take sick leave and seek medical advice for work stress-related problems. It also contributes to the limited evidence regarding supervisor praise and recognition as a protective factor for employees exhibiting the symptoms of psychological strain.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To study the prevalence of burnout among non-health care workers (NHCW), the risk and protective factors and to quantify the risk of burnout. METHOD We conducted a cross-sectional study on the 3142 NHCW of the University Hospital of Clermont-Ferrand. They received a self-assessment questionnaire. RESULTS Four hundred thirty seven (13.9%) NHCW completed the questionnaires. More than three quarter (75.4%) of NHCW was in burnout, with one in five (18.7%) having a severe burnout. Job demand was the main factor explaining the increase in exhaustion and overinvestment was the main factor explaining the increase in cynicism. Effort-reward imbalance (ERI) multiplied the risk of severe burnout by 11.2, job strain by 3.32 and isostrain by 3.74. CONCLUSION NHCW from hospital staff are at high risk of burnout. The two major models of stress at work, the job demand-control-support and the ERI, were highly predictive of burnout, with strong dose-response relationships.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Frontline workers have shown extraordinary resilience and sustained efforts since the outbreak of COVID-19. The present study used semi-structured interviews with 38 frontline workers in the UK and Ireland to explore the psychological impact of working through COVID-19. DESIGN The qualitative data were analysed systematically using thematic analysis. RESULTS Four themes were interpreted: 1)) "I've stopped turning the telly on. I've had to because the news was making me ill": An ecosystem of influence; 2) "Dead, dead, dead": The emotional and psychological toll: 3) "It's shone a light on what we're failing on as well": Injustices, hierarchies and heroes: and 4) "I definitely think COVID happened for a reason to stop us in our tracks and to slow us down": Unexpected positives. CONCLUSION This research offers insights into how frontline workers make sense of their experiences during periods of enormous societal and occupational stress. The learnings generated have relevance for government and organisational policy-makers who have opportunities to shape future conditions for frontline workers.

Abstract
The Effort-Reward Imbalance Questionnaire (hereinafter, ERIQ) has been largely used worldwide to assess job stress, but it has not yet been applied in Spanish police. The objective of this study was to examine the construct validity and the internal consistency of the ERIQ in police officers. A cross-sectional study was carried out, using a nonprobability sampling (quota). A total of 217 Spanish police officers participated, 192 men (88.47%) and 25 women (11.53%). The mean age was 41 years (SD = 7.51). These police officers completed the ERIQ together with some other questionnaires (DECORE-21, MBI, GHQ and STAI) in order to provide evidence for validity based on the relationships to other constructs. A confirmatory factor analysis was performed and a matrix of correlations with the rest of constructs was created. The results showed an appropriate fit to the original model consisting of three scales. In addition, the scales of the ERIQ presented the expected relationship with the other constructs. The ERIQ is a valid instrument for assessing occupational stress in Spanish police officers and can improve the interventions in this professional group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Healthcare workers, who protect and improve the health of individuals, are critical to the success of health systems and achieving national and global health goals. To respond effectively to the healthcare needs of populations, healthcare workers themselves must be in a good state of health. However, healthcare workers face various psychosocial pressures, including having to work night shifts, long working hours, demands of patient care, medical disputes, workplace violence, and emotional distress due to poor interactions with patients and colleagues, and poor promotion prospects. Constant exposure to these psychosocial hazards adversely impacts healthcare workers' health. Consequently, this study aimed to examine the influence of effort-reward imbalance, job satisfaction, and work engagement on self-rated health of healthcare workers. The results would be conducive to providing policy guidance to improve the health of healthcare workers. METHODS We analysed the data of 1327 participants from The Chinese Sixth National Health and Services Survey in Sichuan Province that was conducted from August 2018 to October 2018. Structural equation modelling was used to test the hypothesized relationships among the variables. RESULTS Only 40.1% of healthcare workers rated their health as 'relatively good' or 'good'. Effort-reward imbalance had a significant negative correlation with self-rated health (β = - 0.053, 95% CI [- 0.163, - 0.001]). The associations of effort-reward imbalance and work engagement with self-rated health were both mediated by job satisfaction (95% CI [- 0.150, - 0.050] and [0.011, 0.022]), and work engagement mediated the relationship between effort-reward imbalance and self-rated health (95% CI [- 0.064, - 0.008]). CONCLUSION In order to improve the health of healthcare workers, administrators should balance effort and reward and provide opportunities for career development and training. In addition, health managers should help healthcare workers realize the significance and value of their work and keep them actively devoted to their work through incentive mechanisms.

Abstract
Objectives The purpose of this study was to assess the relationships among the following elements: unhealthy work indicators (job stress and emotional exhaustion at work), the decision to drive (or not), and driving crashes suffered by Spanish workers. Methods For this cross-sectional study, a full sample of 1,200 Spanish drivers (44% women and 56% men) was used, their mean age being 42.8 years. They answered a questionnaire divided into three sections: demographic and driving-related data; burnout, job stress, and life stress; and self-reported road behaviors and driving safety indicators. Results Overall, 41.6% of drivers reported emotional exhaustion at work. Furthermore, 80.2% of the participants showing substantial signs of job stress or exhaustion had experienced one or more important stressful life events during the previous year. Job stress was associated with the number of driving crashes suffered along the last 3 years. Also, and especially in situations where drivers admit not feeling well enough to drive, job stress and emotional exhaustion seem to be independent from the decision to drive, and from perceiving these variables as potential impairers of driving performance. Conclusions First of all, this study showed a high prevalence of job stress and emotional exhaustion symptoms experienced at work by Spanish workers. Moreover, significant relationships were found among self-rated driving performance, workplace stress and burnout indicators, which suggests that job stress and emotional exhaustion levels may, indeed, impair driving performance, but they do not influence the decision to drive or not. In other words, even when they are significantly affected by job stress or emotional exhaustion at work, most Spanish drivers still drive.

Abstract
Objectives: Failed reciprocity at work and in partnerships was shown to adversely affect wellbeing in general populations, but evidence in disability settings is widely lacking. We explore the effects of failed reciprocity on wellbeing and the impact of the partners' perception of reciprocity on wellbeing in persons with a physical disability and their partners.Design: We use longitudinal dyadic data from the pro-WELL study, a Swiss survey of persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) and their partners (n = 246). Two-level mixed-models with random effects for persons and repeated measures were applied.Main outcome measures: Cognitive wellbeing was measured with the Satisfaction with Life Scale and affective wellbeing with the Positive and Negative Affect Scale short-form.Results: Failed reciprocity at work and in the partnership was associated with all indicators of wellbeing in persons with SCI and with cognitive wellbeing and negative affect in caregiving partners. Life satisfaction of caregiving partners and positive affect of persons with SCI was lower if the partner perceived the partnership as non-reciprocal.Conclusion: Negative associations of failed reciprocity with wellbeing are not restricted to general populations but equally apply to the disability setting and dyadic analyses reveal the importance of the partners' perception of partnership reciprocity for wellbeing.

Anhand der Daten eines Gesundheitsmonitorings von N = 811 Polizisten wurde dieser Frage mittels hierarchischer linearer und ordinaler Regressionsanalysen nachgegangen. Die Polizisten gaben im Vergleich zur deutschen Erwerbsbevölkerung und auch zu anderen Polizeistichproben höhere Werte beruflicher Gratifikationskrisen an. Berufliche Gratifikationskrisen und die Subdimensionen Verausgabung, Wertschätzung, berufliche Entwicklung, Konstanz der Arbeitssituation sowie Verausgabungsbereitschaft leisteten signifikante Vorhersagebeiträge zur arbeitsbezogenen Erschöpfung und der subjektiven Wahrscheinlichkeit einer gesundheitsbedingten Frühberentung, auch unter Kontrolle weiterer beeinflussender Variablen (Alter, chronische Erkrankung, Einsatzbeteiligung, Beschäftigungsort). Die Ergebnisse geben Hinweise für mögliche Interventionen zur Verminderung beruflicher Gratifikationskrisen und zur Vorbeugung von Arbeitsausfällen aufgrund von Erschöpfung und Frühberentungen.

Abstract
PURPOSE Resilience may facilitate the adaptation after experiencing a severe disease such as acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and attenuate the negative effects of stress on health-related quality of life (HRQOL). However, it is unclear so far whether resilience moderates a negative association between work-related stress and HRQOL in employed patients after AMI. METHODS Patients with confirmed AMI and regular paid employment admitted to a hospital in the study region of the MONICA/KORA Myocardial Infarction Registry, Germany (04/2014-06/2017) were included and completed questionnaires during their hospital stay and 6 and 12 months after discharge. The Resilience Questionnaire (RS-11) and the Effort-Reward Imbalance (ERI) Questionnaire were used to assess trait resilience and ERI, respectively. HRQOL was measured by the Short Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36) mental and physical component summary scales. Generalized estimating equations (GEE) adjusted for relevant potential confounding variables (demographic, social, stress-related, and clinical) were used to determine the association between resilience and HRQOL in the study course. RESULTS From the 346 patients enrolled in the study, 270 patients (78.0%) had completed all surveys. High baseline trait resilience was significantly and independently associated with high physical HRQOL (ß = 0.15, p < 0.0001) and high mental HRQOL (ß = 0.37, p < 0.0001) 1 year post AMI. No significant interaction effects between trait resilience and ERI were found in the physical HRQOL GEE model (ß = 0.05, p = 0.7241) and in the mental HRQOL model (ß = 0.05, p = 0.3478). CONCLUSIONS The results demonstrated that trait resilience is independently and strongly related with post-AMI HRQOL but does not moderate the association between ERI and HRQOL.

Abstract
Background In the current labour system many workers are still exposed to heavy physical demands during their job. In contrast to leisure time physical activity (LTPA), occupational physical activity (OPA) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases and all-cause mortality, termed “the physical activity (PA) health paradox”. In order to gain more insight into the PA health paradox, an exploration of structural preventive measures at the workplace is needed and therefore objective field measurements are highly recommended. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the protocol of the Flemish Employees’ Physical Activity (FEPA) study, including objective measurements of PA, heart rate (HR) and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) to gain more insight into the PA health paradox. Methods A total of 401 workers participated in the FEPA study across seven companies in the service and production sector in Belgium. The participants comprised 167 men and 234 women, aged 20 to 65 years. OPA and LTPA were assessed by two Axivity AX3 accelerometers on the thigh and upper back. Ambulatory HR was measured by the Faros eMotion 90° monitor. Both devices were worn during two to four consecutive working days. In addition, CRF was estimated by using the Harvard Step Test. Statistical analyses will be performed using Pearson correlation, and multiple regression adjusted for possible confounders. Discussion This study aims to provide a better insight in the PA health paradox and the possible buffering factors by using valid and objective measurements of PA and HR (both during LTPA and OPA) over multiple working days. The results of the study can contribute to the prevention of cardiovascular disease by providing tailored recommendations for participants with high levels of OPA and by disseminating the results and recommendations to workplaces, policy makers and occupational health practitioners.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Effort-reward imbalance (ERI) was hypothesized to be associated with ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) and pulse pressure (PP) among female hotel room cleaners. METHODS ERI, ABP, and PP were assessed among 419 cleaners from five hotels during 18 waking hours. Adjusted linear regression models were used to assess associations of ERI with ABP and PP during 18-hours, work hours, and after work hours. RESULTS There was a pattern of higher ERI being associated with higher 18-hour systolic ABP and 18-hour PP although the results were imprecise. An increase of ERI by half its range was associated with a 1.6 mmHg (95% CI, -1.6-4.7) increase in 18-hour systolic blood pressure (SBP) and a 0.7 mmHg (95% CI, -1.1-2.5) increase in 18-hour PP. An increase in rewards by half its range was associated with a 2 mmHg decrease in after-hours SBP (-2.2, 95% CI, -5.4-1.0) and after-hours PP (-1.9, 95% CI, -3.8-0.0). Among females 45 years or older, ERI was associated with 2.1 and 2.2 mmHg increase in 18-hour and work hours diastolic ABP, respectively, compared to a 0 mmHg change in 18-hour and work hours diastolic ABP in younger women. The number of dependents at home attenuated the association. CONCLUSIONS ERI was positively associated with ABP, particularly SBP, and the association was modified by age and the number dependents at home, although the estimates were imprecise. Workplace interventions that integrate stress management and active ABP surveillance appear warranted. However, larger studies with Latina women need to confirm our results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Job demand-control (DC) and effort-reward imbalance (ERI) are two commonly used measures of work stress which are independently associated with health. AIMS To test the hypothesis that DC and ERI have different and cumulative effects on health. METHODS DC and ERI were assessed in the Hertfordshire Cohort Study. The characteristics and occupations of men and women reporting either or both work stresses were compared and the interaction of these with health status were explored. RESULTS Complete data were available for 1021 men and 753 women, reporting on their most recent or current job. A total of 647 (63%) men and 444 (59%) women reported neither work stress, while 103 (10%) men and 78 (10%) women reported both. Patterns of ERI and DC, alone and in combination, were different by type of occupation and by gender. Men reporting both work stresses (as compared with neither) were more likely to be single. Reported ERI with DC in the most recent or current job was associated with: poorer SF-36 physical function scores (OR 2.3 [95% CI 1.5-3.7] for men; OR 2.0 [95% CI 1.2-3.6] for women) and mental health scores (OR 2.8 [95% CI 1.8-4.4] for men; OR 3.1 [95% CI 1.8-5.3] for women). Moreover, average grip strength was 1.7 kg (95% CI 0.2-3.3) lower among men who described both work stresses. CONCLUSION DC and ERI are two models of the psychosocial workplace environment which offer different but cumulative insight into the impacts of work on an individual's psychological and physical health, particularly in a population sample.

Abstract
PURPOSE Despite its importance a comprehensive assessment of health functioning has rarely been included in epidemiological investigations of work-related health outcomes. In this study, we analyzed associations of a health-adverse psychosocial work environment with a comprehensive set of subjective and objective measures of health functioning that cover the three domains of affective, cognitive, and physical functioning. METHODS Baseline data from the French CONSTANCES cohort study were used with a sample of 24,327 employed men and women aged 45-60. Psychosocial work environment was measured by the short version of the effort-reward imbalance (ERI) questionnaire. Measures of health functioning were depressive symptoms, semantic fluency, verbal memory, walking speed, standing balance and lung function. RESULTS First, we replicated main psychometric properties of the ERI questionnaire in the French cohort. Second, ERI scales revealed consistent associations with depressive symptoms, but less consistent links to cognitive and physical function. Among men, we observed an association of stressful work with reduced lung function. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated consistent associations of stressful work in terms of effort-reward imbalance with affective functioning in a large sample of male and female employees. Relationships with physical functioning were less consistent and restricted to men, and cognitive functioning was only marginally associated with stressful work. We also established the psychometric properties of the French short version of the ERI questionnaire, thus offering a tool for guiding and harmonizing further research in this field.

PATIENTS AND METHODS The study was conducted in 300 participants during a 3 year period. All participants completed a self-report questionnaire, assessing various aspects of EI, such as self-emotion appraisal, other emotion appraisal, emotion regulation and use of emotions. As hypothesized, coronary heart disease is a prognostic factor of regulation of emotions. RESULTS The present study is an attempt to examine the relation between emotional understanding and cardiovascular related diseases, namely coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus and obesity. Establishing which diseases are independent risk factors for the understanding of emotions, could have a significant impact on emotional health, through the treatment of these cardiovascular related diseases. Emotions were studied within the theoretical context of Emotional Intelligence (EI), which affects people's physical and mental health. CONCLUSION The results of this study emphasize on the relationship of cardiovascular related diseases and psychological characteristics, such as anxiety and anger, being aspects of EI. Additionally, this work fills a gap in the relevant Greek literature, as a first attempt to examine the correlation of EI with cardiovascular related diseases.

Abstract
Listening to speech in noise is effortful, particularly for people with hearing impairment. While it is known that effort is related to a complex interplay between bottom-up and top-down processes, the cognitive and neurophysiological mechanisms contributing to effortful listening remain unknown. Therefore, a reliable physiological measure to assess effort remains elusive. This study aimed to determine whether pupil dilation and alpha power change, two physiological measures suggested to index listening effort, assess similar processes. Listening effort was manipulated by parametrically varying spectral resolution (16- and 6-channel noise vocoding) and speech reception thresholds (SRT; 50% and 80%) while 19 young, normal-hearing adults performed a speech recognition task in noise. Results of off-line sentence scoring showed discrepancies between the target SRTs and the true performance obtained during the speech recognition task. For example, in the SRT80% condition, participants scored an average of 64.7%. Participants’ true performance levels were therefore used for subsequent statistical modelling. Results showed that both measures appeared to be sensitive to changes in spectral resolution (channel vocoding), while pupil dilation only was also significantly related to their true performance levels (%) and task accuracy (i.e., whether the response was correctly or partially recalled). The two measures were not correlated, suggesting they each may reflect different cognitive processes involved in listening effort. This combination of findings contributes to a growing body of research aiming to develop an objective measure of listening effort.

Background: Epidemiologic evidence for work stress as a risk factor for coronary heart disease is mostly based on a single measure of stressful work known as job strain, a combination of high demands and low job control. We examined whether a complementary stress measure that assesses an imbalance between efforts spent at work and rewards received predicted coronary heart disease. Methods: This multicohort study (the “IPD-Work” consortium) was based on harmonized individual-level data from 11 European prospective cohort studies. Stressful work in 90,164 men and women without coronary heart disease at baseline was assessed by validated effort–reward imbalance and job strain questionnaires. We defined incident coronary heart disease as the first nonfatal myocardial infarction or coronary death. Study-specific estimates were pooled by random effects meta-analysis. Results: At baseline, 31.7% of study members reported effort–reward imbalance at work and 15.9% reported job strain. During a mean follow-up of 9.8 years, 1,078 coronary events were recorded. After adjustment for potential confounders, a hazard ratio of 1.16 (95% confidence interval, 1.00–1.35) was observed for effort–reward imbalance compared with no imbalance. The hazard ratio was 1.16 (1.01–1.34) for having either effort–reward imbalance or job strain and 1.41 (1.12–1.76) for having both these stressors compared to having neither effort–reward imbalance nor job strain. Conclusions: Individuals with effort–reward imbalance at work have an increased risk of coronary heart disease, and this appears to be independent of job strain experienced. These findings support expanding focus beyond just job strain in future research on work stress.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to identify alignments between wellness offerings low socioeconomic status (SES) employees need and those large companies can provide. METHODS Focus groups (employees); telephone interviews (large companies). Employees were low-SES, insured through their employers, and employed by large Washington State companies. Focus groups covered perceived barriers to healthy behaviors at work and potential support from companies. Interviews focused on priorities for employee health and challenges reaching low-SES employees. RESULTS Seventy-seven employees participated in eight focus groups; 12 companies completed interviews. Employees identified facilitators and barriers to healthier work environments; companies expressed care for employees, concerns about employee obesity, and reluctance to discuss SES. CONCLUSION Our findings combine low-SES employee and large company perspectives and indicate three ways workplaces could most effectively support low-SES employee health: create healthier workplace food environments; prioritize onsite physical activity facilities; use clearer health communications.

Abstract
PURPOSE We hypothesized that effort-reward imbalance (ERI) is associated with an atypical cortisol response. ERI has been associated with higher job stress. Stress triggers cortisol secretion via the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and significant deviation from a typical cortisol pattern can indicate HPA axis dysfunction. METHODS 176 police officers participated from the Buffalo Cardio-Metabolic Occupational Police Stress (BCOPS) Study. ERI was the exposure variable. Outcome variables were saliva-based peak and mean cortisol values, total area under the curve ground (AUCG) and baseline (AUCI); linear regression line fitted to log-transformed cortisol. Regression analyses were used to examine linear trend between ERI and cortisol parameters. Repeated measures analysis examined whether the pattern of cortisol over time differed between low ERI (< median) and high ERI (≥ median). RESULTS Mean age was 46 years (SD = 6.6). After adjustment for potential confounders, there was a significant inverse association between ERI and peak cortisol (β = - 0.20, p = 0.009), average cortisol (β = - 0.23, p = 0.003), and total area under the curve (β = - 0.21, p = 0.009). ERI was not significantly associated with AUCI (β = - 0.11, p = 0.214); slope of the regression line fitted to the cortisol profile (β = - 0.009, p = 0.908). Repeated measures analyses showed that the cortisol pattern did not vary significantly between high and low ERI using the median as a cut point (interaction p value = 0.790). CONCLUSIONS ERI was inversely associated with the magnitude of awakening cortisol over time, indicating HPA axis dysregulation and potential future health outcomes.

Abstract
Purpose We aim to extend current knowledge on associations between stressful work and sickness absence, first, by studying associations between ERI and sickness absence among full-time employees from various occupations, and second, by investigating if associations vary by age. Methods We use data from four waves of the German socio-economic panel (GSOEP), collected among men and women between 2006 and 2012, with 9418 observations. Stressful work is measured with a short form of the ERI questionnaire. We investigate an imbalance between effort and reward (ER ratio) as well as the two main components (“high effort” and “low reward”). Sickness absence is measured by self-reported number of sickness days (assessed the following year). After descriptive analyses, we estimate a series of multivariable regressions, including tests for interactions between age and work stress. Results Each of the three indicators of stressful work is related to higher number of sickness days, with except of “high effort” in case of men. Findings remain significant after adjusting for social position (income, education and occupational class) and health. In addition, for both men and women, associations were slightly higher among older workers, though interactions did not reach statistical significance. Conclusion Our findings support that stressful work is linked to sickness absence across a wide spectrum of jobs with varying incomes and educational levels, and also that associations are slightly more pronounced among older workers. Abstract
Circulatory diseases (CDs) (including myocardial infarction, angina, stroke or hypertension) are among the leading causes of death in the world. In this paper, we explore for the first time the impact of a specific aspect of organizational climate, Psychosocial Safety Climate (PSC), on CDs. We used two waves of interview data from Australia, with an average lag of 5 years (excluding baseline CDs, final n = 1223). Logistic regression was conducted to estimate the prospective associations between PSC at baseline on incident CDs at follow-up. It was found that participants in low PSC environments were 59% more likely to develop new CD than those in high PSC environments. Logistic regression showed that high PSC at baseline predicts lower CD risk at follow-up (OR = 0.98, 95% CI 0.96–1.00) and this risk remained unchanged even after additional adjustment for known job design risk factors (effort reward imbalance and job strain). These results suggest that PSC is an independent risk factor for CDs in Australia. Beyond job design this study implicates organizational climate and prevailing management values regarding worker psychological health as the genesis of CDs.

Abstract
Background: Work stress among nurses has increased in recent years due to the demands of clinical nursing. Objectives: To investigate psychosocial work stress among nurses using the effort-reward imbalance (ERI) model with assessment malondialdehyde (MDA) as an oxidative stress marker and total antioxidants. Methods: The present study was conducted on 204 registered nurses worked at two tertiary hospitals in Menoufia governorate, Egypt through the period from the 1st of February to the end of July 2016. Two questionnaires were applied including general demographic and occupational histories as well as effort-reward questionnaire. Blood analysis was performed to assess MDA and total antioxidant levels. Results: ERI was prevalent among the study participants (72.5%). ERI was more prevalent among young married nurses who worked more than 10 years. Nurses that worked at ICUs complained more of ERI (43.2%) while nurses that worked at operation rooms complained more of overcommitment (62.5%). MDA levels were significantly positively correlated with E/R ratios (rho = 0.350, P ≤ 0.001). Conclusions: Work stress was prevalent among the studied nurses as revealed by the high ERI and MDA levels. Young married female nurses complained more of work stress. ICUs and operating rooms were the most stressful departments at the studied hospitals. Hence, implementing programs and strategies that eliminate stressful working conditions at hospitals is critical to the reduction and prevention of work stress among nurses.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the associations between fixed-term employment and health (work ability and mental health) and behaviors (engagement and performance). Psychological contract fulfilment (PCF) and breach (PCB) are investigated as potential mediators of these associations. METHODS Seven hundred workers employed on fixed-term contracts from a broad range of organizations participated in the study. The Structural Equation Model was performed to analyze the data. RESULTS Mediation analyses revealed that good physical and mental health and productivity are more likely to be achieved by those workers who perform non-manual work and (to some extent) accept their contracts because they experience high levels of PCF and low levels of PCB. CONCLUSIONS Apart from the lack of physical workload, psychological contract fulfilment has been revealed as yet another significant mediator between a higher socioeconomic position and good health and productivity of fixed-term workers.

Abstract
The European steel industry’s workforce is highly heterogeneous and consists of various occupational groups, presumably facing different psychosocial stressors. The few existing studies on the subject mainly focused on physical constraints of blue-collar workers, whereas the supposable psychosocial workload received only little research attention. This is remarkable considering the challenges associated with statutory required risk assessment of psychosocial hazards. Valid measures of hazard analysis must account for various stressors and reliably identify them, also between occupational groups. The present study, based on a sample of blue- and white-collar workers (N = 124) from the European steel industry, aims to provide a first insight into psychosocial stressors and strain at work in this rarely researched industrial sector. Furthermore, two well-known theoretical roadmaps in job analysis are examined regarding their utility for risk assessment in heterogeneous workforces: the German standard version of the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ) and the short version of the effort–reward imbalance questionnaire. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed that the COPSOQ was better suited to predict various strain indices in the present sample. Especially stressors relating to socioemotional aspects, such as work-privacy conflict, revealed a reasonable impact, indicating the need for comprehensive solutions at the organizational level instead of solutions focusing on single workplaces. To conclude, a broadly diversified and validated approach in psychosocial risk assessment is needed to adequately assess the variety of psychosocial factors at work and in different occupational groups.

Abstract
We examined the association between effort-reward imbalance (ERI) exposure at work and unsuccessfully treated hypertension among white-collar workers from a large cohort in Quebec City, Canada. The study used a repeated cross-sectional design involving 3 waves of data collection (2000-2009). The study sample was composed of 474 workers treated for hypertension, accounting for 739 observations. At each observation, ERI was measured using validated scales, and ambulatory blood pressure (BP) was measured every 15 minutes during the working day. Unsuccessfully treated hypertension was defined as daytime ambulatory BP of at least 135/85 mm Hg and was further divided into masked and sustained hypertension. Adjusted prevalence ratios and 95% confidence intervals were estimated. Participants in the highest tertile of ERI exposure had a higher prevalence of unsuccessfully treated hypertension (prevalence ratio = 1.45, 95% confidence interval: 1.16, 1.81) after adjustment for gender, age, education, family history of cardiovascular diseases, body mass index, diabetes, smoking, sedentary behaviors, and alcohol intake. The present study supports the effect of adverse psychosocial work factors from the ERI model on BP control in treated workers. Reducing these frequent exposures at work might lead to substantial benefits on BP control at the population level.
