Abstract
Acute macular neuroretinopathy (AMN) is a rare retinal condition that predominantly affects young females. The incidence of AMN increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, thereby providing a unique opportunity to elucidate the etiology of this disease. In the present study, 24 articles reporting 59 patients were reviewed. The average age of the patients was 33.51 ± 14.02 years, ranging from 16 to 75 years, with females comprising 71.19% of the cases. The average duration of ocular symptoms post-infection was 8.22 ± 10.69 days, ranging from 4 to 150 days. This study investigated the potential pathogenesis of AMN, including the impact of COVID-19 on retinal neurovascular structure and function, immune-mediated inflammatory factor production, blood-retinal barrier disruption, and retinal microvascular damage, as well as potential clinical therapeutic interventions. This research provides a theoretical framework that can inform further investigations of AMN.

Abstract
COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, has presented formidable challenges to global health since its emergence in late 2019. While primarily known for respiratory symptoms, it can also affect the ocular surface. This review summarizes the effects of SARS-CoV-2 on ocular surface immunity and inflammation, focusing on infection mechanisms, immune responses, and clinical manifestations. Ocular symptoms, though uncommon, include conjunctivitis, dry eye, and blurred vision. SARS-CoV-2 binds to ACE2 receptors in ocular surface epithelial cells, facilitating viral entry, replication, and local dissemination. The innate immune responses involving corneal epithelial cells and immune cells are discussed, alongside mechanisms of antigen presentation and adaptive immunity. The review also examines the roles of cytokines and chemokines in mediating ocular surface inflammation and explores the impact of cytokine storms and chronic inflammation on ocular health. Additionally, the interplay between systemic and ocular immune responses is highlighted, analyzing how systemic COVID-19 inflammation influences ocular surface health. These insights underscore the broader implications of COVID-19 beyond localized ocular infection. By consolidating current findings, this review aims to guide preventive and therapeutic strategies while identifying directions for future research to mitigate the ocular consequences of COVID-19.

Abstract
Objectives There is an urgent need to maximise the effectiveness of existing malaria interventions and optimise the deployment of novel countermeasures. When assessing the effects of interventions against malaria, it is imperative to consider the interdependence of people and the resulting indirect effects. Without proper consideration of the effects, the interventions' impact on health outcomes and their cost-effectiveness may be miscalculated. We aimed to summarise how the indirect effects of malaria interventions were analysed and reported. Design We conducted a scoping review. Data sources We searched PubMed, Web of Science and EMBASE. Eligibility criteria We included studies that were conducted to quantify the indirect effects of any interventions for all species of Plasmodium infection. Data extraction and synthesis We used a standardised data collection form to obtain the following information from each record: title, name of authors, year of publication, region, country, study type, malaria parasite species, type of interventions, type of outcomes, separate estimated indirect effect for different conditions, pre-specified to measure indirect effect, secondary analysis of previous study, methods of indirect effects estimation, terms of indirect effects, and if positive or negative indirect effects observed. Results We retrieved 32 articles and observed a recent increase in both the number of reports and the variety of terms used to denote the indirect effects. We further classified nine categories of methods to identify the indirect effects in the existing literature and proposed making comparisons conditional on distance to account for mosquito flight range or intervention density within that range. Furthermore, we proposed using the words community effects or spillover effects as standardised terms for indirect effects and highlighted the potential benefits of mathematical models in estimating indirect effects. Conclusions Incorporating assessment of indirect effects in future trials and studies may provide insights to optimise the deployment of existing and new interventions, a critical pillar in the current fight against malaria globally.

Abstract
To investigate the characteristics of acute visual dysfunction and fundus lesions in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. A retrospective case series study was conducted. Data from 48 patients (96 eyes) with COVID-19 infection who presented to our ophthalmology department with acute onset visual disturbance between December 5, 2022, and February 28, 2023 were collected. Asymptomatic patients and those who had already recovered were excluded. Data collected included patient demographics, ophthalmic examinations, multicolor imaging (MCI), infrared autofluorescence (IR), spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT), fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA). Of the 48 patients, 15 were male and 33 were female, with a mean age of 32 years. All patients had bilateral involvement. OCT showed hyperreflective signals in the outer plexiform layer and outer nuclear layer of the macular region in all 96 eyes of 48 patients (100%). Additionally, 66 eyes of 33 patients (68.8%) of eyes demonstrated abnormal reflectivity in the ellipsoid and interdigitation zones. MCI revealed petaloid or wedge-shaped hyperreflective areas in the macula in 46 (47.9%) of eyes, corresponding to hyporeflective areas on IR. Cotton-wool spots were observed in the peripapillary or posterior pole area in 54 (56.3%) of eyes. COVID-19 infection can lead to acute, bilateral, symmetric, and widespread retinal damage. Characteristic findings can be observed in ophthalmological examinations such as OCT, MCI, and IR.

Abstract
PURPOSE To report the clinical and microbiological profiles of microbial keratitis and its antimicrobial resistance before, during, and after COVID-19. METHODS This was a retrospective case-note review of all corneal scrape specimens collected from patients with microbial keratitis from January 2018 to December 2023. Case records were analyzed for demographic characteristics, microbiological diagnosis, and antibiograms. All outcome variables were collected, stratified, and compared between 3 periods: the pre-COVID-19 group (January-December 2019), the COVID-19 group (January 2020-December 2022), and the post-COVID-19 group (January-December 2023). RESULTS A total of 947 corneal cultures from 947 patients were reviewed. Gram-positive bacteria predominated in all periods, with no significant differences in their distribution. Staphylococcus epidermidis was the most frequently identified organism. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most common Gram-negative bacterium, with its incidence significantly lower in the post-COVID period. Fungal infections showed a significant increase in the post-COVID group, with Fusarium sp. being the most common fungus and showing a significant increase in incidence in the post-COVID group. CONCLUSIONS Despite a stable incidence of microbial keratitis, this study highlights a concerning trend in antibiotic resistance. Although some pathogens became less common, those that persisted have become increasingly difficult to treat. Understanding the clinical and microbiological profiles of microbial keratitis and antimicrobial resistance patterns before and after the COVID-19 pandemic is crucial for informed treatment decisions.

Abstract
Several infectious pulmonary diseases affect the eye. An understanding of the association between infectious pulmonary and ocular diseases is pivotal to their successful management. We aimed to review the infections affecting both the lungs and the eye. The electronic database PubMed and the search engine Google Scholar were searched for relevant articles. Ocular tuberculosis (TB), usually not associated with clinical evidence of pulmonary TB, can affect almost all the ocular structures. Confirmation of the diagnosis of ocular TB requires demonstration of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in ocular fluids/tissues. Among the drugs used to treat TB, ethambutol, isoniazid, and linezolid may cause toxic optic neuropathy. Elderly, those with renal disease, diabetes mellitus, malnourished, alcoholics, and those who will receive ethambutol at doses greater than 15 mg/kg/day and for prolonged periods are at high risk of developing toxic optic neuropathy. These individuals should be referred to an ophthalmologist before initiating ATT for a baseline ophthalmic evaluation. Linezolid may also cause toxic retinal neuropathy. Rifampicin may cause yellowish-orange discoloration of tears and contact lenses. Adenovirus, coronavirus, influenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus, and rhinovirus exhibit both pulmonary and ocular tropism. Pneumocystis jirovecii choroiditis is rare and mainly seen when aerosolized pentamidine is used for pneumocystis pneumonia prophylaxis. Further research is needed to develop non-interventional strategies to diagnose ocular TB. Biomarkers for early detection of toxic optic neuropathy are a need of the hour. Genetic factors and mechanisms behind the development of ethambutol, isoniazid, and linezolid-induced toxic optic neuropathy need further study.

Abstract
PURPOSE This review aimed to evaluate the significance of assessing radial peripheral capillary (RPC) network parameters by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection confirmed by polymerase chain reaction. METHODS A literature search was conducted in the PubMed database to select high-quality reviews and original articles on the use of OCTA for visualizing the RPC network and calculating RPC parameters. RESULTS The study revealed that systemic hypoxia, hypercoagulable state, and inflammation affect the RPC network in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Reduced RPC parameters were observed early in the course of SARS-CoV-2 infection and after several months of follow-up. Additionally, there was a correlation between reduced RPC parameters and subsequent thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer. CONCLUSIONS The OCTA examination of the retina and optic disc should be considered in patients with a history of COVID-19 to assess the impact of systemic hypoxia and inflammation on ocular function. Follow-up assessment of these patients is also necessary to understand the potential consequences of ischemia affecting the optic nerve, retina, and choroid.

Abstract
To examine corneal subbasal nerve changes in patients who received vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 virus and underwent COVID-19 infection compared to infected non-vaccinated patients and healthy controls. Twenty-nine eyes of 29 vaccinated patients (mean age: 36.66 ± 12.25 years) within six months after PCR or Ag test proven COVID-19 infection and twenty-eight eyes of 28 age-matched infected, non-vaccinated patients (mean age: 42.14 ± 14.17 years) were enrolled. Twenty-five age-matched healthy individuals (mean age: 47.52 ± 18.45 years) served as controls. In vivo confocal microscopy (Heidelberg Retina Tomograph II Rostock Cornea Module, Germany) was performed in each group. Corneal subbasal nerve plexus morphology and corneal dendritic cells (DC) were evaluated. Significantly higher corneal nerve fiber density (P < 0.001), nerve branch density (P < 0.001), nerve fiber length (P < 0.001), total branch density (P = 0.007), nerve fiber area (P = 0.001) and fractal dimension (P < 0.001) values were observed in vaccinated patients after COVID-19 infection compared to the non-vaccinated group. Significantly higher DC density was observed in the non-vaccinated group compared to the control group (P = 0.05). There was a statistically significant difference in the size of mature DCs (P < 0.0001) but the size of immature DCs did not differ significantly among the 3 groups (P = 0.132). Our results suggest that SARS-CoV-2 vaccination may have a protective effect against the complications of COVID-19 disease on the corneal subbasal nerve fibers.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the risk of uveitis, one of the most common ocular manifestations of COVID-19, in individuals with a history of uveitis and COVID-19 infection while discriminating the effects of COVID-19 infection and vaccinations. We analyzed nationwide data from 235,228 individuals with a history of uveitis prior to COVID-19 infection and evaluated incidences and hazard ratios (HRs) of post-COVID-19 uveitis for different post-infection periods, including early- (within 30 days) and delayed-onset ones. The cumulative incidences of post-infection uveitis at 3, 6, and 12 months were calculated as 8.5%, 11.8%, and 14.0%, respectively. The HR of post-COVID-19 uveitis was 1.21 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.07-1.37) and was particularly higher in the early-onset period (1.42, 95% CI: 1.24-1.61). Vaccinated individuals showed a modestly elevated risk of uveitis relative to pre-infection, while unvaccinated ones exhibited substantially higher risks in the early-onset period: the HR of post-infection uveitis before vaccination was 3.61 (95% CI: 1.35-9.66), whereas after vaccination, it was 1.21 (95% CI: 1.05-1.39). COVID-19 infection was associated with a higher risk of uveitis, which was mitigated by vaccination. Vigilance in the monitoring of uveitis is warranted for recently COVID-19-infected individuals with a history of uveitis, particularly unvaccinated individuals.

Abstract
Purpose To investigate oculoplastic conditions in patients diagnosed with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) seen at ophthalmology departments of three tertiary referral centers in the United Kingdom and the United States, and review of the literature. Methods Retrospective multicenter case series studied over 18 months. Results A total of four patients developed eyelid, orbital, or lacrimal gland pathology within four weeks of testing positive for COVID-19. All were male, and the mean age at presentation was 49 (range, 31-58 years). Suspected diagnoses included anterior idiopathic orbital inflammation, facial angioedema, dacryoadenitis, and anophthalmic socket inflammation. Three patients recovered fully and one patient recovered partially (mean 2.7 weeks) from ocular manifestations with steroids hastening recovery. Conclusion Adnexal manifestations of COVID-19 include self-limiting orbital inflammation and eyelid lymphedema.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate macular chorioretinal flow changes on optical coherence tomography angiography, in participants who received inactivated and messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines to prevent Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHODS In this prospective cohort study, healthy participants who received two doses of an inactivated COVID-19 vaccine (CoronaVac) and then one dose of an mRNA vaccine (BNT162b2) were examined before and after each vaccination. Ophthalmologic examination and imaging with optical coherence tomography angiography were performed during each visit. We evaluated vascular densities in the superficial and deep capillary plexuses in foveal, parafoveal, and perifoveal areas; the foveal avascular zone; and choriocapillaris flows (in 1- and 6-mm-diameter areas). RESULTS One eye in each of the 24 participants was assessed. Superficial capillary plexus vascular densities in the parafoveal area were significantly lower after the second dose of the CoronaVac vaccine than after the first dose. In the deep capillary plexus, vascular attenuation was observed only in the parafoveal region after the first CoronaVac dose. However, in all regions, the deep capillary plexus vascular densities and subfoveal choriocapillaris flow were significantly decreased after the second CoronaVac dose. After the BNT162b2 dose, the superficial capillary plexus vascular densities, the deep capillary plexus vascular densities, and subfoveal choriocapillaris flow of most regions were significantly lower than those before vaccinations. CONCLUSION Vascular attenuation, observed particularly after the second dose of the CoronaVac vaccine, may explain the pathogenesis of postvaccine ocular ischemic disorders reported in the literature. However, these disorders are extremely rare, and the incidence of thrombotic events caused by COVID-19 itself is higher.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In this study, we aimed to detect changes in posterior segment structures and vascular density caused by COVID-19 using an optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) device. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included 20 eyes of 20 patients no systemic or ocular disease who were followed at the Ophthalmology Clinic of Health Sciences University Antalya Training and Research Hospital. The OCTA images of these individuals taken prior to contracting COVID-19 and six months after recovery were examined. RESULTS The mean choriocapillaris blood flow was 2.00±0.13mm2 before COVID-19 and 2.08±0.23mm2 after the disease, and the mean subfoveal choroidal thickness was 247.33±7.65μm before the disease and 273.08±4.92μm after the disease, indicating a statistically significant difference (P=0.003, P=0.001, respectively). The mean retinal nerve fiber layer thickness before and after COVID-19 were 119.33±3.88 and 117.50±3.92μm, respectively, representing a statistically significant decrease (P<0.001). CONCLUSION This is the first study in the literature to evaluate the post-COVID-19 changes in the vascular structures of the eye compared to the pre-disease values. In this study, we found statistically significant changes in choriocapillaris blood flow, subfoveal chroidal thickness and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness after COVID-19 infection. Further research with a greater sample size is needed to explore the effect of COVID-19 on these parameters.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Considering the various manifestations of coronavirus disease 2019 and its imperative importance in terms of the right clinical approach and early management, we sought to present a hemicentral retinal vein occlusion case, with a history of heterozygosity of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) genes and potential for clotting complications as a late manifestation of coronavirus disease 2019, and provide a brief review of reported retinal vein occlusion cases in patients with coronavirus disease 2019. CASE PRESENTATION A 35-year-old Iranian patient presented with a visual impairment in the left eye 4 months after recovering from coronavirus disease 2019. He reported a mild blurring of vision in the same eye a few days after admission due to coronavirus disease 2019. The ophthalmic evaluation was compatible with hemicentral retinal vein occlusion. Systemic and laboratory workups were negative except for borderline protein C activity, homocysteine levels, and heterozygosity of MTHFR genes. The patient was scheduled to receive three monthly intravitreal antivascular endothelial growth factor injections. CONCLUSION We present a case of inferior hemicentral retinal vein occlusion case with an MTHFR mutation with sequential loss of vision 4 months after coronavirus disease 2019 to make clinicians aware of the possibility of late ocular coronavirus disease 2019 manifestations.

Abstract
Introduction COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2, commonly presents with symptoms such as fever and shortness of breath but can also affect other organs. There is growing evidence pointing to potential eye complications. In this article, we aim to systematically review the ocular manifestations of COVID-19. Methods We conducted a systematic review to explore the ocular manifestations of COVID-19. We searched online databases including PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science up to September 4, 2023. After a two-stage screening process and applying inclusion/exclusion criteria, eligible articles were advanced to the data extraction phase. The PRISMA checklist and Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) were used for quality and bias risk assessments. Results We selected and extracted data from 42 articles. Most of the studies were cross-sectional (n = 33), with the highest number conducted in Turkey (n = 10). The most frequent ocular manifestation was conjunctivitis, reported in 24 articles, followed by photophobia, burning, chemosis, itching, and ocular pain. Most studies reported complete recovery from these manifestations; however, one study mentioned visual loss in two patients. Conclusion In general, ocular manifestations of COVID-19 appear to resolve either spontaneously or with supportive treatments. For more severe cases, both medical treatment and surgery have been employed, with the outcomes suggesting that complete recoveries are attainable.

Abstract
Retinal lesions, including cotton-wool exudates, microbleeds, vascular occlusions and vasculitis, occur in a minority of Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19) patients. Retinal assessments using retinography can help document these lesions. The objective of this work was to identify retinal changes in patients admitted to the ward with a positive Real Time Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-qPCR) exam for COVID-19. A cross-sectional, observational study was carried out of patients with mild and moderate symptoms admitted to the Hospital de Base in São José do Rio Preto. The Eyer® portable retinal camera (Phelcom® Technologies) was used to evaluate 30 male and 21 female patients. The ages ranged from 21 to 83 years (mean: 47 years). Systemic arterial hypertension was identified in 21 (41.2 %) and diabetes mellitus in 12 (23.5 %) patients. Six (11.7 %) reported worsening visual acuity, however, none of these patients had ocular findings to justify this complaint. Ten patients (19.6 %) had intraretinal hemorrhages; one (1.9 %) had cotton-wool exudates and seven (13.7 %) had dilations of veins. Thirteen patients (25.4 %) had vascular tortuosity and six (11.7 %) had pathological arteriovenous crossings. Portable retinography is useful to evaluate patients admitted to isolation wards due to COVID-19. It is important to remember that some of the patients investigated had comorbidities like diabetic maculopathy and systemic arterial hypertension. Hence, some care should be taken in attributing these observations uniquely to COVID-19 infection.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe a series of post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) endogenous endophthalmitis (EE) patients from a multispecialty tertiary hospital in North India. METHODS A retrospective chart review including all consecutive cases with EE following confirmed COVID-19 disease from July 2020 to June 2021. RESULTS Seven eyes of four patients (three female and one male) were included. Two patients had confirmed bilateral fungal (Aspergillus sp.) EE and two patients had presumed fungal EE (one bilateral and one unilateral). Three of these four patients received systemic steroids as part of COVID-19 treatment previously. Five eyes were managed with initial intravitreal injection (IVI), followed by pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), and two eyes were managed with only IVI. All patients received systemic antifungal agents. Intraocular inflammation resolved in all eyes with treatment. One patient of EE also developed voriconazole-induced transient visual hallucination, which resolved on discontinuing the medication. CONCLUSION This case series represents a series of EE cases following COVID-19 disease or its sequelae or as a result of prior treatment for COVID-19. Ophthalmologists and physicians must be vigilant about these complications and initiate prompt management at the earliest.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neurotropic capabilities of SARS-COVs allow viruses to reach the central nervous system by hematogenous neuronal dissemination. The human retina, as an extension of the Central Nervous System, may have some neurodegenerative and/or vascular modifications related to COVID-19. OBJECTIVES To evaluate choroidal and inner neural layers in participants previously recovered from COVID-19 compared to the control group using optical coherence tomography. METHODS With a cross-sectional approach, the sample (n = 96), constituted by patients who have recovered from COVID-19 (n = 56) and healthy participants control group (n = 40) were ophthalmologically characterized. The neurodegenerative and vascular histological assessment was performed using SD-OCT and the mean thickness was measured in Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) subfields. Retinal nerve fiber layer, Ganglion cell layer and subfoveal choroidal thickness were obtained through semi-automatic measurement. RESULTS A total of 40 controls (27 women [67.5%]) and 56 COVID-19 participants (34 women [60.8%]) were included in this first report. There were retinal thickness significant differences in nearly all inner ETDRS subfields: nasal 3 mm (p = .025), I3 (p = .049), and temporal 3 mm (p = .009). Also, a decrease in neural layers was found in the nasal 3 mm (p = .049) and temporal 3 mm (p = .029) during ganglion cell layer assessment. The peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness was thinner in the COVID-19 group in superior temporal (p = .019), nasal (p = .002), inferior temporal (p = .046) and global (p = .014). Concerning the subfoveal choroidal measurement, an increase was observed in the COVID-19 group (p = .002). CONCLUSION Participants who had recovered from COVID-19 showed a non-glaucomatous neuropathy trend pattern. We found differences closer to the classic description of the "bow-tie" observed in other neurological as compressive neuropathies at the chiasma location. OCT assessment also showed an increase in choroidal thickness as a result of vascular changes.

Abstract
Several optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) studies have demonstrated retinal microvascular changes in patients post-SARS-CoV-2 infection, reflecting retinal-systemic microvasculature homology. Post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS) entails persistent symptoms following SARS-CoV-2 infection. In this study, we investigated the retinal microvasculature in PCS patients using OCT-angiography and analysed the macular retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell layer (GCL) thickness via spectral domain-OCT (SD-OCT). Conducted at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, UK, this cross-sectional study compared 40 PCS participants with 40 healthy controls, who underwent ophthalmic assessments, SD-OCT, and OCT-A imaging. OCT-A images from the superficial capillary plexus (SCP) were analysed using an in-house specialised software, OCT-A vascular image analysis (OCTAVIA), measuring the mean large vessel and capillary intensity, vessel density, ischaemia areas, and foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area and circularity. RNFL and GCL thickness was measured using the OCT machine's software. Retinal evaluations occurred at an average of 15.2 ± 6.9 months post SARS-CoV-2 infection in PCS participants. Our findings revealed no significant differences between the PCS and control groups in the OCT-A parameters or RNFL and GCL thicknesses, indicating that no long-term damage ensued in the vascular bed or retinal layers within our cohort, providing a degree of reassurance for PCS patients.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic came with many new challenges that forced personal and professional lifestyle modifications. Medical facilities were in scarcity against this new unknown enemy and were challenged with the overloaded patient flow, scarcity of healthcare staff, and evolving treatment modalities with a better understanding of the virus each day. Ophthalmology as a "branch of medicine" suffered challenges initially because of a lack of guidelines for patient management, close working distance during routine examinations, and halt of major surgeries, including cataracts. Pediatric ophthalmology had major implications, as reduced outpatient visits would mean deeper amblyopia, and changed lifestyles, including online classes and home refinement, predisposing children to myopia, digital eye strain, and worsening of strabismus. COVID-19 also unveiled underlying accommodation and convergence anomalies that predisposed pediatric and adolescent patients to an increased prevalence of headache and acute onset esotropia. Teleophthalmology and other innovative solutions, including the use of prism glasses, safe slit-lamp shields, alternative ways of school screening with the use of photoscreeners, performing retinoscopy only when needed, and using autorefractors were among the few guidelines or modifications adopted which helped in the efficient and safe management of pediatric patients. Many pediatric ophthalmologists also suffered in terms of financial constraints due to loss of salary or even closure of private practices. School screening and retinopathy of prematurity screening suffered a great setback and costed a lot of vision years, data of which remains under-reported. Important implications and learnings from the pandemic to mitigate future similar situations include using teleophthalmology and virtual platforms for the triage of patients, managing non-emergency conditions without physical consultations, and utilizing home-based vision assessment techniques customized for different age groups. Though this pandemic had a lot of negative implications, the innovations, modifications, and other important learnings helped pediatric ophthalmologists in navigating safely.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Patients after organ transplantation with COVID-19 have a higher risk of morbidity and mortality than patients in the general population. There are single studies that assess the eyes of COVID-19 patients, but there are no such studies on organ transplant recipients. The purpose of this study was to comprehensively examine the eyes of kidney transplant recipients (KTR) after recovery from mild to moderate SARS-CoV-2 infection. METHODS A total of 40 KTR after COVID-19 and 20 KTR without clinical and immunological symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection as a control group was qualified for the cross-sectional study. A total of 76 eyes from 38 KTR on an average of 7 weeks after COVID-19 and 36 eyes from 18 KTR from the control group were studied. The participants underwent an ophthalmological examination, and the retinal and choroid vessels and nerves were assessed by optical coherence tomography angiography. RESULTS We found a lower vessel density (VD) in the deep capillary plexus in the central part of the retina (VD deep central) of the study group. Women had significantly lower VD deep central in the study group (15.51 vs. 18.91, p < 0.001). Multivariate linear regression analysis confirmed an independent, negative impact of COVID-19 (p < 0.001) and female gender (p = 0.001) on VD deep central. CONCLUSION The results of our study confirmed that changes in microcirculation induced by SARS-CoV-2 infection may affect the retinal vessels in KTR. Mild to moderate COVID-19 in KTR resulted in a significant reduction in VD deep central of the retina, with these changes being more common in females.

Abstract
The biological consequences of viral infection result from biochemical, physiological, structural, morphological and genetic changes in infected cells. In productive infections, virus-induced biological changes in cells may be closely related to the efficiency of viral replication or to the recognition of these cells by the immune system. These changes are usually associated with cytocidal viruses, as in the case of the pandemic coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19. Many of these changes are required for effective viral replication. The physiological state of living cells has a significant impact on the outcome of viral infection, as the host cell provides the synthetic machinery, key regulatory molecules and precursors for newly synthesised viral proteins and nucleic acids. This review focuses on novel target cell types for SARS-CoV-2 exposure outside the respiratory tract. Findings and examples are collected that provide information on virus-cell interactions. The identification of unusual target cells for SARS-CoV-2 may help to explain the diverse symptoms in COVID-19 patients and the long-lasting effects after infection. In particular, the discovery of previously undescribed target cells for SARS-CoV-2 action needs to be considered to improve treatment of patients and prevention of infection.

Abstract
Objectives We aimed to investigate the short- and long-term static and dynamic pupillary responses of patients recovered from coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) using quantitative infrared pupillography. Methods This study included patients who recovered from COVID-19 (Group 1) and age- and gender-matched controls (Group 2). A detailed ophthalmic examination was performed at 1 month and 6 months after the diagnosis of COVID-19. Photopic, mesopic, and scotopic pupil diameters (PDs) were measured using a quantitative infrared pupillography which was integrated into Scheimpflug/Placido photography-based topography system. PDs at 0, 2nd, 4th, and 6th seconds, and average pupil dilation speeds at 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th seconds were recorded. Results Eighty-six eyes of 86 patients (Group 1: n=42; Group 2: n=44) were included. While the mean photopic, mesopic, and scotopic PDs were significantly larger in the COVID-19 group than the control group in the 1st month (p=0.035, p=0.017, p=0.018, respectively), no statistically significant difference was found in the 6th month. Besides, average pupil dilation speeds and PDs at the 0, 2nd, 4th, and 6th seconds were not statistically significantly different between the two groups in the 1st month and 6th month. Conclusion PDs were significantly larger in COVID-19 patients in all light intensities in the 1st month after COVID-19. However, pupillary dilation was transient, and no significant difference was found in the 6th month. We suggest that the transient pupillary dilation may be secondary to the autonomic nervous system dysfunction and/or optic nerve and visual pathways alterations following COVID-19.

Abstract
Ocular involvement in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can be due to direct viral invasion or indirectly due to an immunosuppressed state. Prolonged hospitalization also makes them susceptible to various secondary infections. The purpose of this case report is to report two rare cases of endogenous endophthalmitis (EE) in COVID-19 recovered patients. Case presentation Two patients who were hospitalized and received treatment for COVID-19 pneumonia with remdesivir and systemic steroids presented with decreased vision. The first case had a severe anterior chamber reaction with a hypopyon and dense exudates in the vitreous. The second case had cells and flare in the anterior chamber and exudates in the vitreous. They were diagnosed with EE and underwent a diagnostic vitreous tap followed by pars plana vitrectomy and intravitreal antibiotic and steroid. The culture of vitreous fluid was negative for any bacteria and fungus in both cases. However, the first case demonstrated Escherichia coli in urine culture. The follow-up visual acuity was no perception of light and only perception of light in the first and second case, respectively. Clinical discussion Severe COVID-19 patients who are hospitalized, receive systemic steroid and have associated comorbidities like diabetes mellitus are at high risk of EE. Conclusion Delay in diagnosis and appropriate treatment in these patients leads to poor visual outcome.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We conducted this study to detect possible changes in posterior segment structures using the optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in individuals vaccinated with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included healthcare professionals who presented to the Ophthalmology Clinic of Health Sciences University Antalya Training and Research Hospital, who were scheduled to receive the first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. The exclusion criteria were any eye pathology (e.g., glaucoma, uveitis, diabetic retinopathy, amblyopia), myopia with the absolute value of refractive error >6, axial length >26 mm, history of eye surgery, and presence of systemic disease.OCTA was performed to 40 healthcare professionals before vaccination and on the third day after vaccination. RESULTS After Pfizer-BioNTech vaccination, there was a statistically significant decrease in the total vascular, foveal vascular, parafoveal vascular and perifoveal vascular density of the superficial capillary plexus and the perifoveal vascular density of the deep capillary plexus and a statistically significant increase in the retinal foveal thickness and total retinal parafoveal thickness compared to the pre-vaccination values (p < 0.0001, p = 0.009, p < 0.0001, p = 0.001, p = 0.04, p = 0.03, and p = 0.05, respectively). CONCLUSION We consider that the decrease in the retinal vascular density may be due to vascular endothelial damage and inflammation in vaccinated people. It can be suggested that increased inflammation plays a role in the retinal thickness in vaccinated people similar to patients with a history of COVID-19. We also consider that spike protein may be effective in these processes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 infection on retinal microvasculature by topographically mapping the retinal arteriole-to-venule ratio (AVR). METHODS In a comparative cross-sectional case-control study, fundus photos were obtained in COVID-19-infected patients and healthy controls. AVT was measured over 16 points across the retina using retinal vascularity index (RVI)-a novel semi-automated computerized parameter based on retinal vasculature. RESULTS A total of 51 COVID-19-positive patients and 65 healthy controls were enrolled in the study. Overall, the mean RVI of all 16 points across the retina was 0.34 ± 0.02 in patients with COVID-19 and 0.33 ± 0.02 in control subjects (p = 0.64). Out of the 16 points being measured, three points had a statistically significant greater value in patients with COVID compared to normal controls. CONCLUSION Localised greater RVI values were found in some of the points in COVID-19-positive patients, which likely indicates a more focal change of the vasculature.

Abstract
PURPOSE We investigated the acute subclinical choroidal and retinal changes caused by Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in patients with and without pulmonary involvement, using spectral domain optic coherence tomography. METHODS This prospective case-control study included COVID-19 patients: 50 with pulmonary involvement and 118 with non-pulmonary involvement. All patients were examined 1 month after recovering from COVID-19. The changes were followed using optic coherence tomography parameters such as choroidal and macular thickness and retinal nerve fibre layer and ganglion cell complex measurements. RESULTS All choroidal thicknesses in the pulmonary involvement group were lower than in the non-pulmonary involvement group and the subfoveal choroidal thickness differed significantly (p=0.036). Although there were no significant differences between the central and average macular thicknesses in the two groups, they were slightly thicker in the pulmonary involvement group (p=0.152 and p=0.180, respectively). A significant decrease was detected in the pulmonary involvement group in all ganglion cell complex segments, except for the outer nasal inferior segment (p<0.05). In addition, a thinning tendency was observed in all retinal nerve fibre layer quadrants in the pulmonary involvement group compared to the non-pulmonary involvement group. CONCLUSION In COVID-19 patients with pulmonary involvement, subclinical choroidal and retinal changes may occur due to hypoxia and ischemia in the acute period. These patients may be predisposed to ischemic retinal and optic nerve diseases in the future. Therefore, COVID-19 patients with pulmonary involvement should be followed for ophthalmological diseases.

Abstract
Background Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has brought great challenges to the global public health system and huge economic burdens to society, the causal effect of COVID-19 and intraocular pressure was blank. Objective This study aimed to explore the causal association between coronavirus disease (COVID-19) susceptibility, severity and criticality and intraocular pressure (IOP) by bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Materials and methods Genetic associations with COVID-19 susceptibility, severity and criticality were obtained from the COVID-19 Host Genetics Initiative. Genetic associations with IOP were obtained from GWAS summary data. The standard inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was used in the primary assessment of this causality. Other methods were also implemented in supplementary analyses. Finally, sensitivity analysis was performed to evaluate the reliability and stability of the results. Results The results showed that COVID-19 susceptibility had null effect on IOP (β = 0.131; Se = 0.211; P = 0.533) as assessed by the IVW method. Moreover, the results revealed that COVID-19 severity, specifically, hospitalization due to COVID-19, had a positive effect on IOP with nominal significance (β = 0.228; Se = 0.116; P = 0.049). However, there were null effect of COVID-19 criticality on IOP (β = 0.078; Se = 0.065; P = 0.227). Sensitivity analysis showed that all the results were reliable and stable. The reverse MR analysis revealed that there was null effect of IOP on COVID-19. Conclusions We demonstrated that hospitalization due to COVID-19 might increase IOP; therefore, greater attention should be given to monitoring IOP in inpatients with COVID-19.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe endogenous endophthalmitis in the setting of Covid-19 pneumonia post recovery. METHODS Retrospective review of five patients of endogenous endophthalmitis following Covid-19 disease done. RESULTS All five cases had received systemic corticosteroid for a mean duration of 7 days during severe Covid-19 treatment. Decrease vision was presenting symptom between 1 and 31 days following Covid-19 recovery. All patients had presumed fungal endogenous endophthalmitis based on clinical profile. Four out of five patients subjected to pars plana vitrectomy had microbiologically proven aspergillus species endogenous endophthalmitis on vitreous fluid assessment; two cases each of aspergillus niger and aspergillus fumigates. Four eyes underwent pars plana vitrectomy with silicone oil injection had shown satisfactory anatomical outcome with control of the infection; however, no significant visual gain achieved. CONCLUSION We reported five cases of aspergillus endogenous endophthalmitis in Covid-19 recovered patients to document the likely presentation of this rising entity and avoid misdiagnosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) has many different ocular manifestations. This study evaluates the effects of the disease and the steroid used in this disease on ocular structures. PURPOSE To evaluate the effects of Covid-19 and the steroids used in the treatment of severe infection on ocular structures and choroidal thickness. METHODS This prospective study included 76 eyes of 76 patients who were hospitalized due to Covid-19 and 30 eyes of 30 healthy volunteering controls. Group I included 35 eyes who were hospitalized due to moderate-to-severe involvement that received steroid treatment, group II included 41 eyes with moderate involvement that did not require steroid treatment, and group III included 30 eyes with age- and gender-matched control subjects. Ophthalmological examination and imaging results of the patients obtained in the third week and third month after the diagnosis were compared between the groups. RESULTS Mean age of all participants was 40.2 ± 6.1 years. In the third week after the diagnosis of Covid-19, choroidal thickness in all regions (subfoveal, nasal, and temporal) was significantly greater in group I than in group II (for all, p<0.001). Moreover, choroidal thicknesses were significantly higher in group I and group II than in the control group (for all, p<0.001). In the third month, all the groups had similar choroidal thickness values (for subfoveal, nasal, and temporal; p=0.058, p=0.111, p=0.079, respectively). CONCLUSION Our findings showed that Covid-19 infection causes choroidal thickening by affecting the choroidal layer and that steroid treatment further increases this thickness in the acute period. In addition, the reversal of this thickening to the normal level within a period of three months indicates that the effect of the disease on the choroid is reversible.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to report eyelid myokymia in patients recently recovered from COVID-19 disease. A cohort of 15 patients who developed eyelid myokymia during or immediate post-recovery of systemic disease were evaluated. Demographic, clinical characteristics, effect of age, and hospitalization on the disease course were studied. The disease course was evaluated every month for 3 months period. All, except 2, patients had complete resolution of lid myokymia within 3 months of onset. Median [IQR] myokymia recovery time was 42 [31,60] days. Age and duration of hospitalization had a significant linear relationship with myokymia recovery time. Recovery was delayed by 2.64 days with every 1-year increment in age and by 6.19 days with every additional day of hospital stay. Recovery time was independent of severity of systemic disease (P = .055) and gender (P = 0.2). Eyelid myokymia can be a possible manifestation of COVID-19 recovery phase. While myokymia recovers gradually in all these patients, older age and a longer duration of hospitalization are associated with slower recovery.

Abstract
AbstractIntroductionCoronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) resulted in a worldwide pandemic, due to its great capacity to invade the human body. Previous studies have shown that the primary route of invasion of this virus is the human respiratory tract via the co-expression of ACE2 receptor and TMPRSS2, a serine protease on the cellular surface. Interestingly, this condition is present not only on the respiratory epithelium but on the conjunctival mucosa, as well. Thus, we hypothesized that SARS-CoV-2 is present on the conjunctival mucosa.AimTo prove that SARS-CoV-2 can be detected in the conjunctiva.MethodsPreviously nasopharyngeal swab-sample based real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) positive COVID-19 infected patients were selected at the COVID Care Centers of Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary. The study was approved by the ethical committee of Semmelweis University. During their recovery, both nasopharyngeal and conjunctival swab-samples were taken and PCR method was used to detect the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA. Appropriate statistical analysis was performed.ResultsThe study population consisted of 97 patients, 49 females (50.5%) and 48 males (49.5%), with a mean age of 67.2 ± 11.9 years. During recovery, with nasopharyngeal swabs, the PCR test was positive in 55 cases (56.70%), whereas with conjunctival swabs it was positive in 8 cases (8.25%). Both tests were positive in 5 cases (5.15%). In some patients, ocular symptoms were observed as well. The rest of the patients (29 cases) had negative nasopharyngeal PCR tests during recovery.ConclusionsAlthough only in few cases, the data of the present study provides a proof of concept that SARS-CoV-2 can be present on the conjunctival mucosa even in nasopharyngeal negative patients, a finding, which can have clinical importance. Also, on the basis of these findings one can hypothesize that - in addition to the respiratory tract – the conjunctiva can be an entrance route for SARS-CoV-2 to the human body. Thus, in high-risk conditions, in addition to covering the mouth and nose with mask, the protection of the eyes is also strongly recommended.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a novel pandemic viral illness which may lead to severe respiratory diseases. However, its ophthalmic manifestations are still not well understood. There could be serious complications involving various organs in patients with the disease and in those who are recovering, or have recovered, from COVID-19. Endogenous endophthalmitis, was a rare occurrence in the past but has increased in the post-COVID-19 pandemic. Endogenous endophthalmitis results from hematogenous spread from a remote primary source. A 55-year-old man with confirmed COVID-19 presented to a local hospital with unilateral gradual loss of vision and swelling of the left eye that occurred 10 days after discharge from the hospital. Based on detailed ophthalmic examination, this patient with a co-morbidity, namely diabetes mellitus was placed in the intensive care unit where he was given corticosteroids and ventilation for two weeks. Most patients requiring mechanical ventilation may experience disorders of the eye, and it may be difficult to treat these occurrences while the patient remains in ICU. COVID-19 can lead to ocular complications especially in the late stages of infection. Follow-up of post COVID-19 patients is crucial to monitor possible ocular complaints including endophthalmitis as early diagnosis and treatment is essential to salvage vision.

Abstract
Viral pandemics often take the world by storm, urging the medical community to prioritize the most evident systemic manifestations, often causing ocular manifestations to go unnoticed. This literature review highlights the ocular complications of the Monkeypox, SARS-CoV-2, MERS, Ebola, H1N1, and Zika viruses as the most recent viral pandemics. Research into the effects of these pandemics began immediately. Moreover, it also discusses the ocular complications of the vaccines and treatments that were used in the scope of the viral pandemics. Additionally, this review discusses the role of the eye as an important route of viral transmission, and thereafter, the International recommendations to reduce the incidence of viral transmission were mentioned. Lastly, this paper wants to lay out a platform for researchers who want to learn more about how viruses show up in the eye.

Abstract
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become the most critical health crisis at present, and research is continued about the exact pathophysiology, presentations, and complications of this pandemic. It influences several organs, and many studies have addressed the organs, the involvement of which during the COVID-19 results in patients' death. One of the important organs that can be involved during COVID-19, which is also a transmission route of the disease, is the eye. According to the evidence, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) can have ocular manifestations and complications. According to the literature, conjunctivitis is the most common presentation, which can develop at any stage of COVID-19 (during and even after the disease), and the major pathophysiology of the eye involvement during the disease is attributed to the direct effect of the virus on the eyes, tissue damage caused by inflammation, underlying diseases, and the adverse effect of the medications prescribed. There are also reports of life-threatening complications, such as rhino-orbital cerebral mucormycosis, which require urgent treatment and are associated with a great mortality rate. Ocular manifestations may also be the presentation of a life-threatening event, such as stroke; therefore, it is necessary to pay great attention to the ocular manifestations during COVID-19. In this review, after about 2 years of the pandemic started, we present a narrative review on ocular manifestations during COVID-19, categorized into three main categories; ophthalmic, orbital, and neuro-ophthalmological manifestations with a detailed description of the presenting symptoms, risk factor, diagnostic, and therapeutic strategies suggested for each.

Abstract
Parvovirus B-19 (B19V) is a common infection in children, occasionally complicated by ocular manifestations. In patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome virus (SARS-CoV-2), many cases of bacterial, fungal, and viral co-infections have been described. We report on a case of bilateral conjunctivitis, keratitis, and anterior uveitis that occurred in a patient co-infected by B19V and SARS-CoV-2. A young nurse developed, 20 days after the onset of asthenia and fever, a maculopapular rash and, in the following month, B19V-related arthritis. Shortly after a course of antibiotics and corticosteroids and the resolution of the arthritis, she began to complain of hearing loss and tinnitus. A polymerase chain reaction for SARS-CoV-2, previously negative, turned out positive; IgM for B19V decreased while IgG increased and antinuclear autoantibody and rheumatoid factor test results were positive. Ear symptoms disappeared after a course of prednisone, but eye burning and itching appeared 2 weeks after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) positive swab. Bilateral conjunctivitis, keratitis, and anterior uveitis were diagnosed, which responded completely to a topical corticosteroid and mydriatic therapy. No relapses were observed in the following 12 months. The onset and progression of the symptoms, along with the laboratory findings, suggest a double pathogenesis of the ocular manifestations: keratitis and uveitis, along with the ear symptoms, seem to be the expression of an autoimmune reaction to B19V infection, while the conjunctivitis was likely related to direct infection of the conjunctiva by SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract
This paper analyzes, from a bibliometric viewpoint, those publications that relate COVID-19 and eye indexed in Scopus since the beginning of the pandemic, and it identifies the resulting main research lines. A bibliographic search in the Scopus database was conducted for publications that simultaneously include ocular and visual manifestations and aspects with COVID-19, from 1 January 2020 to 16 March 2021, and the obtained bibliographic information was processed with VOSviewer (v. 1.6.16). A total of 2206 documents were retrieved, and 60% were original articles. The USA published the most studies (24.6%). The retrieved documents had a total of 18,634 citations. The h index of the set of retrieved documents was 58. The Indian Journal of Ophthalmology was the most productive journal, while JAMA Neurology and The Lancet accounted for 20% of citations. Three keyword clusters representing hotspots in this field were identified. Eye-related COVID-19 research is an emerging field with plenty of scientific evidence whose growth is expected to increase as the aspects and manifestations of the disease, its treatment and the effect of vaccination on it become known.

Abstract
Purpose The COVID-19 pandemic has led to drastic changes to the daily lives of those living in the United Kingdom. We hypothesized that the effect of the imposed lockdown on both behaviour and social interaction has the potential to influence the characteristics of microbial keratitis presenting locally to Manchester Royal Eye Hospital — a major tertiary eye centre in the UK. Methods We conducted a retrospective case-note review of all positive corneal scrape cultures identified by our local microbiology laboratory during the year since the announcement of lockdown measures in the UK (23 March 2020 to 23 March 2021). Culture results were compared with previously collated, published “baseline” data from prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic (2004–2019). Statistical analysis was undertaken, predominantly looking at the incidence of microbial keratitis and the variety of cultured pathogens. Results A total of 6243 corneal scrape results were reviewed. Comparison of data between the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown did not show a significant change in the incidence of culture-positive microbial keratitis: mean annual positive samples during 2004–2019 were 128 (35%) vs 91 (29%) during lockdown (P=0.096). No statistically significant shifts in the incidence of organism subtypes — fungi, acanthamoeba, Gram-positive bacteria, or Gram negative bacteria — were identified (P=0.196, 1, 0.366, and 0.087, respectively). Conclusion Contrary to our hypothesis, our results suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic did not alter the incidence or characteristics of microbial keratitis presenting to Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in the year following the implementation of lockdown measures in the UK.

Abstract
For COVID-19 survivors, defeating the virus is just the beginning of a long road to recovery. The inducibility and catastrophic effects of the virus are distributed across multiple organs. The induction of cytokine storms in COVID-19 patients is due to the interaction of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the host receptor, leading to various immunopathological consequences that may eventually lead to death. So far, COVID-19 has affected tons of people across the world, but there is still no effective treatment. Patients facing complications of COVID-19 after recovery have shown extensive clinical symptoms similar to that of patients recovering from previously circulating coronaviruses. Previous knowledge and literature have opened up ways to treat this disease and manage post-COVID-19 complications, which pose a severe challenge to the health system globally and may exacerbate the fragmentation of diseases. The use of steroids as a treatment has resulted in various health problems and side-effects in COVID-19 patients. This review discusses various post-COVID-19 complications observed and adjunctive therapies used along with common COVID-19 treatment and spotlights their side effects and consequences. This review provides the latest literature on COVID-19, which emphasizes the subsequent complications in various organs, side effects of drugs, and alternative regimens used to treat COVID-19.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Since the breakthrough of the pandemic, several drugs have been used to treat COVID-19 patients. This review aims to gather information on adverse events (AE) related to most drugs used in this context. METHODS We performed a literature search to find articles that contained information about AE in COVID-19 patients. We analysed and reviewed the most relevant studies in the Medline (via PubMed), Scopus and Web of Science. The most frequent AE identified were grouped in our qualitative analysis by System Organ Class (SOC), the highest level of the MedDRA medical terminology for each of the drugs studied. RESULTS The most frequent SOCs among the included drugs are investigations (n = 7 drugs); skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders (n = 5 drugs); and nervous system disorders, infections and infestations, gastrointestinal disorders, hepatobiliary disorders, and metabolism and nutrition disorders (n = 4 drugs). Other SOCs also emerged, such as general disorders and administration site conditions, renal and urinary disorders, vascular disorders and cardiac disorders (n = 3 drugs). Less frequent SOC were eye disorders, respiratory, thoracic and mediastinal disorders, musculoskeletal and connective tissue disorders, and immune system disorders (n = 2 drugs). Psychiatric disorders, and injury, poisoning and procedural complications were also reported (n = 1 drug). CONCLUSIONS Some SOCs seem to be more frequent than others among the COVID-19 drugs included, although neither of the studies included reported causality analysis. For that purpose, further clinical studies with robust methodologies, as randomised controlled trials, should be designed and performed.

Abstract
The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection has become a worldwide threat resulting in a pandemic in 2020. SARS-CoV-2 infection manifests itself as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) that is evidenced in a vast number of either specific or nonspecific symptoms. Except for typical (but nonspecific) symptoms such as fever, dry cough, or muscle weakness, the infected patients might also present atypical symptoms including neurological, dermatological, or ophthalmic manifestations. This paper summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding the onset, progression, and types of ophthalmic symptoms induced by SARS-CoV-2 infection recognized amongst the infected patients.

Abstract
Background The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2), has led to a global pandemic in an unprecedented time frame. Systemic vascular involvement in COVID‐19 has been identified, and SARS‐CoV‐2 has also been found to cause multiple organ ischemia and posterior ocular segment disease in mammals, raising concerns about the human retinal microvascular involvement in SARS‐CoV‐2. Objective To objectively assess the presence of retinal microvascular impairment in COVID‐19 patients by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), so as to facilitate the clinical system management of COVID‐19 patients. Methods We searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Ovid, CBM to collect eligible studies. The main outcomes included the vessel density (VD), area or perimeter of foveal avascular zone (FAZ), central foveal thickness (CFT), subfoveal choroidal thickness (SCT) in our meta‐analysis. Results We eventually included five studies with a total of 401 participants. Our meta‐analysis showed that nonacute infectious COVID‐19 or post‐COVID‐19 patients presented significantly lower foveal VD of deep capillary plexus (WMD = −4.22, 95% CI [−8.00, −0.43]) and thinner SCT (WMD = −10.33, 95% CI [−19.08, −1.57]) than healthy controls. The foveal VD and parafoveal VD of superficial capillary plexus, parafoveal VD of deep capillary plexus, CFT, area, and perimeter of FAZ showed no significant differences between the groups. Conclusion The patients of nonacute infectious COVID‐19 or post‐COVID‐19 displayed alterations in the retinal microvasculature and choroidal vessels, including a significantly lower foveal VD in deep capillary plexus and thinner SCT. The impairment may be a medium to long‐term process. Close ophthalmic surveillance is necessary for COVID‐19 patients or post‐COVID‐19 patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of COVID-19 on retinal tissues by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis of the current literature. BACKGROUND The novel coronavirus disease is not yet well understood. The orbit provides a window into the body's microvasculature, and as such, it is a non-invasive opportunity to analyse the systemic circulation in vivo. By analysing the current literature, we test the hypothesis that non-invasive imaging of the retina could provide insight into the effect of COVID-19 on the retinal microvasculature. METHODS For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we screened PubMed databases and LitCOVID19 using the search criteria: (OCTA or Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography) AND (COVID-19 or corona or SARS-CoV-2) AND (retina or fundus). Databases were searched on 11 January 2022. The primary study outcomes were studies that utilised OCTA to analyse the retina; secondary outcomes involved studies that involved other imaging modalities such as OCT, fundus photography, and fundus autofluorescence. FINDINGS The total number of studies included in this review was 32. Optical coherence tomography angiography scans show reduced central retinal vascular density, a thinner ganglion cell layer, a thicker retinal nerve fibre layer, and an enlarged foveal avascular zone. Optical coherence tomography scans demonstrate a thicker central macular thickness and other changes to the macula, ganglion cell, and inner nuclear layers. Many fundus photographs depicted cotton wool spots, microhaemorrhages, and vascular occlusions. Non-invasive imaging technology has demonstrated that COVID-19 can profoundly affect the retina. Therefore, there is a requirement for long-term follow-up of COVID-19 patients to assess whether the retinal damage caused by COVID-19 is reversible.

Abstract
PURPOSE Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) that is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 can cause microvascular alterations that can lead to irreversible complications in multiple tissues and organs. Detrimental effects of COVID-19 on retinal structure have recently been reported in adult population. However, literature data about neonatal population is very scarce. Thus, we aimed to assess possible retinal changes of neonates recovered from COVID-19 infection in this prospective, observational, descriptive study. METHODS The neonates recovered from COVID-19 infection were included to the study between 01 September 2020 and 30 April 2021. Their initial ophthalmological examination was made after a negative real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction obtained and all patients were re-examined 1 month later. All examinations were performed by same retina specialist using a binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy. RESULTS A total of 15 neonates [9 (60%) male, 6 (40%) female, mean gestational age of 38.9 ± 0.9 weeks (ranging from 37 to 40 week)] were evaluated in the study. The mean age at the time of hospitalization was 17.5 ± 8.7 days (ranging from 2 to 29 days), and the mean duration of hospitalization was 12.5 ± 6.2 days (ranging from 4 to 27 days). Except for one patient with bilateral avascular area in Zone-III, no further retinal manifestation related to COVID-19 was found in the study. CONCLUSION COVID-19 infection can cause retinal damage in neonates. Therefore, these patients should be closely monitored for signs of ocular involvement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate retinal microvascular morphological changes in previously COVID-19 infected patients using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), and compare the findings to age- and gender-matched healthy subjects. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, OCTA findings (6.0 × 6.0 mm scan size and scan quality index ≥7/10) from previously COVID-19 infected patients (group 1, 32 patients, 64 eyes) with ≥1 month of complete recovery were compared to healthy subjects (group 2, 33 subjects, 66 eyes) with no history of COVID-19 infection. A positive real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction test on a naso-pharyngeal swab sample confirmed the diagnosis. The AngioVueAnalytics, RTVue-XR 2017.1.0.155 software measured and recorded OCTA parameters. RESULTS Group 1 had significantly lower superficial capillary plexus vessel densities in all foveal regions than group 2 (P<0.05). Foveal deep capillary plexus vessel density in group 1 was also significantly lower than in group 2 (P=0.009); however, no significant differences were found in other regions (P>0.05). All foveal avascular zone (FAZ) parameters were higher in group 1 than in group 2, with significant differences in FAZ area (P=0.019) and foveal vessel density 300 μm area around FAZ (P=0.035), but not FAZ perimeter (P=0.054). The outer retina and choriocapillaris flows were significantly lower in group 1 than in group 2 (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Prior COVID-19 infection seems to be associated with significant changes in retinal microvascular density, as well as FAZ and flow parameters, which may be attributed to different pathogenic mechanisms that lead to SARS-CoV-2 infection, such as thrombotic microangiopathy and angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 disruption.

Abstract
PURPOSE The ongoing coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has greatly impacted theworld. In this review article, we discuss the conjunctival and nasolacrimal mucosa as a potential route for the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission, its ocular manifestations, and management. METHODS Literature review was conducted in the PubMed, Google Scholar and EMBASE databases using keywords such as "coronavirus", COVID-19", "SARS-CoV-2", "conjunctivitis", "ocular surface", "eye" and "ophthalmology". RESULTS The ocular surface may serve as an entry point and reservoir for the virus. Frequency of hand-eye contact was an independent risk factor for COVID-19-related conjunctivitis. Therefore, appropriate protective eyewear or face shields are recommended, especially for health-care workers. Bilateral conjunctival sampling within 9 days of symptom onset provides a higher positive yield rate. Pooled analysis shows an incidence of 11.4% (95%CI = 6.4-17.2%) of ocular manifestations in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection, including hospitalized and non-hospitalized patients. CONCLUSION Conjunctivitis was the most common ocular manifestation, of which ocular redness or congestion, ocular pain, and follicular conjunctivitis were the most common presentation.COVID-19-related conjunctivitis has a self-limiting disease course, and treatment should be mainly supportive.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the midterm longitudinal changes in chorioretinal structures in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods Thirty-four eyes of 17 COVID-19 patients were enrolled. The patients underwent retinal and choroidal imaging upon the recovery (baseline) after 1 and 3 months. Retinal measurements in fovea, parafovea, and perifovea were recorded. To calculate choroidal vascularity index (CVI), luminal and total choroidal areas were measured using Sonada's method. Choroidal thickness was measured at the subfovea 500 microns temporal and nasal to the fovea. Results Mean CVI was 0.64 ± 0.04 at baseline that significantly increased to 0.67 ± 0.05 (P = 0.012) after 1 month and again significantly decreased to 0.63 ± 0.05 after 3 months (P < 0.001). While the stromal component showed a significant decrease between the baseline and first-month values (1.16 ± 0.29 to 1.01 ± 0.27, P = 0.03), the luminal area mostly changed between months 1 and 3 (2.03 ± 0.28 to 1.91 ± 0.23, P = 0.045). The average of subfoveal choroidal thickness and retinal thickness remained unchanged. Conclusion CVI is increased in patients with COVID-19 1 month after recovery from COVID-19 and returns to baseline values after 3 months. Regarding the reversible nature of changes, there might be a prominent role in inflammation.

Abstract
Purpose To examine retinal and corneal neurodegenerative and retinal microvascular changes in patients after mild or asymptomatic COVID-19 disease compared to age-matched controls. Methods Thirty-five (35) patients after PCR-proven SARS-CoV-2 infection and 28 age-matched controls were enrolled. Swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT), OCT angiography, and in vivo corneal confocal microscopy were performed in both groups. Corneal subbasal nerve plexus was quantified. Vessel density for superficial (SCP) and deep capillary plexus (DCP) and structural OCT parameters were recorded. Results Significantly lower nerve branch density (P = 0.0004), nerve fiber area (P = 0.0001), nerve fiber density (P = 0.0009), nerve fiber length (P < 0.0001), and total nerve branch density (P = 0.002) values were observed in patients after COVID-19 compared to healthy controls. VD of the temporal SCP was significantly different between the two groups (P = 0.019). No other SCP and DCP vessel density parameter differed significantly between the two groups. Conclusions Our results suggest that peripheral neurodegenerative changes may occur even after mild or asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection. No relevant microvascular changes were seen with OCT angiography and structural OCT parameters did not show any signs of optic neuropathy in post-COVID patients. In vivo confocal microscopy seems to be an important tool in monitoring peripheral neuropathy in patients after COVID-19.
