Abstract
INTRODUCTION The prevalence of hypertension (HTN) is rising at an accelerated rate, and it remains the primary factor contributing to cardiovascular illnesses. Sex can serve as an influencing factor, leading to variations in the factors affecting HTN. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate gender and sex differences in the prevalence of HTN and explore the associations between HTN and 4 categories of risk factors: demographics, habits or lifestyle, body measurement, and laboratory blood results among non-Hispanic Asians in the United States. METHODS This secondary analysis included non-Hispanic Asian adults aged 18 years or older from the 2017 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. RESULTS Among the 815 participants, 35% of men (140 of 399) and 37% (154 of 416) of women had HTN ( P = .610). The mean age for men is 46.03 ± 16.9 years, whereas the mean age for women is 49.24 ± 16.8 years. After regression analysis, advancing age, increased body mass index, and increased serum uric acid were significant predictors of HTN in both sexes. However, men developed HTN earlier compared with women. Marital status and increased fasting glucose were only significant in men. Compared with their never-married counterparts, men who were currently married or living with a partner had lower odds of having HTN (odds ratio, 0.28; P = .034). CONCLUSIONS There was no significant difference in the prevalence of HTN between the sexes. Age, body mass index, and serum uric acid were significant risk factors in both men and women. Meanwhile, marital status and fasting glucose were only significant in men.

Abstract
Kuwentuhan is an indigenous Filipino oral storytelling method used to preserve history and values and demonstrates how cultural values and knowledge are passed down through generations. Kuwentuhan incorporates collaborative experiences as individuals share their personal stories and perspectives. Indigenous Filipinos use the practice of kuwentuhan to build kapwa (shared identity) and spiritual connection with each other. Kuwentuhan is used by researchers in public health to examine health behaviors and health outcomes, including social determinants of health, within the social, political, and historical context of U.S. colonialism and continued imperialism in the Philippines for those living in diaspora as a minoritized group. Kuwentuhan builds connections in Filipinx/a/o American communities through shared stories of resilience and community care. This paper describes the use of kuwentuhan for public health that involves the elements of (1) embodying kapwa, (2) collective storying and memory, (3) co-producing knowledge, and (4) generational language. The following public health case studies will demonstrate the application of well-documented kuwentuhan in public health research in Filipinx/a/o American communities.

Abstract
The Asian American (AA) population is the fastest-growing major racial group in the U.S. Typically treated as a monolith in research, disaggregated data show disproportionate cardiovascular disease (CVD) burden among certain AA ethnic groups. This analysis aimed to identify which factors explain variance in cardiovascular health among AA ethnic groups. We analyzed pooled 2010-2018 National Health Interview Survey data from Chinese, Asian Indian, Filipino, and Other Asian adults in the U.S. CVD outcomes of interest were coronary heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. Covariates included sociodemographic characteristics, CVD-related health conditions, and behaviors. Variance explained by sociodemographic, health behaviors, and health conditions were calculated based on the adjusted R-squared from a series of five models for each CVD health outcome. Of the 10,353 AA adults in the sample, 53% identified as female. Compared to the aggregate AA sample and the other ethnic groups, Filipinos had a higher burden of any CVD outcome (5.9%), particularly for coronary heart disease (4.0%). The combination of all predictors explained at most 13% of variance, with sociodemographic characteristics accounting for at least half of the variance explained among all participants. Health behaviors explained a greater amount of additional variance for all CVD outcomes among Asian Indians, including an additional 3.1% for stroke. Inversely, existing health conditions were significant predictors of CVD for all AA ethnic groups compared to Asian Indians. There is heterogeneity in CVD outcomes and related risk factors in AA ethnic groups, emphasizing the need for culturally tailored prevention and intervention strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Filipinos are the third largest sub-group of Asian Americans in the United States and have greater socioeconomic and health disparities than many other Asian sub-groups [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8]. Characteristics of Filipino patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) have not been adequately studied. OBJECTIVE To scope the extent, range and nature of current knowledge on PD in Filipino-American (FA) patients in contrast to Filipino patients in general. METHODS We undertook a scoping review including all types of research relating to PD in Filipinos. We searched the following electronic databases: MEDLINE via PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, Herdin and Journals@OVID (searched 1944-November 2024). Criteria for inclusion were peer-reviewed empirical articles published in English that specifically included and described Filipino patients with PD. We reviewed all eligible articles and categorized them by general topical themes. RESULTS The scoping review resulted in 48 eligible papers (Fig. 1). There were 7 papers that discussed PD in FA, and 35 papers that discussed PD in the Philippines. The main themes identified from the scoping review were: epidemiology/etiology (n = 19, 39 %), clinical manifestations and management (n = 20, 42 %), and access to PD care (n = 9, 19 %). CONCLUSION There is a paucity of information on PD in the FA population, with the majority of studies from the Philippines. Further studies on FA in the US, when compared to the studies from the Philippines, may shed light on how differences in the environment and sociodemographic factors may influence the nature and course of PD.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional adequacy and compliance with cardiovascular disease (CVD) guidelines in therapeutic diets implemented in four hospitals in General Santos City, Philippines. Methods The study employed a cross-sectional study and analyzed the one-day therapeutic menus of four hospitals using the Philippine Food Composition Table and the United States Department of Agriculture nutrient database. The nutrient contents calculated in this study were compared among hospitals and benchmarked against the Philippine Dietary Reference Intakes (PDRI) and CVD-specific guidelines, the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), and Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes (TLC). The nutrient adequacy ratios (NARs) and the corresponding mean (SD) values were used to interpret the data. Results Based on the PDRI, the mean (SD) NARs for proteins, simple sugars, vitamin B6, folate, and vitamin B12 were 116% (11%), 72% (16%), 139% (34%), 115% (7%), and 324% (156%), respectively, which were all interpreted as adequate. However, the mean (SD) NARs for energy, 88% (7%), and dietary fiber, 53% (33%), indicate non-compliance with the requirements for these components. As for the DASH guidelines, the hospitals failed to meet the recommendations for calcium, magnesium, and potassium, with mean (SD) NARs of 45% (14%), 49% (10%), and 51% (7%), respectively. The levels of saturated fatty acids, 195% (53%), and dietary cholesterol, 363% (177%), exceeded the limits set by the guidelines. For the TLC guidelines, the mean (SD) NARs of 70% (24%) and 40% (10%) for monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids, respectively, were interpreted as suboptimal. Conclusive interpretations cannot be drawn for sodium, total carbohydrates, total fats due to large variations in their compositions among the hospitals. Conclusion At the menu analysis level, while the therapeutic diets adhered to the recommendations for proteins, simple sugars, and the vitamins, they fell short in their provision for energy, unsaturated fats, dietary fiber, and most minerals. They also exceeded the limits for most dietary lipid parameters set by DASH and TLC. The findings of this study highlight the need for improvements in nutritional adequacy and adherence to CVD guidelines in hospital therapeutic diets. Due to the limited number of observations, future research should aim to confirm and clarify these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevalence varies widely among Asian American adults. The American Heart Association added healthy sleep to its metrics to define ideal cardiovascular health. Little is known about the association between sleep and CVD prevalence among Asian subgroups. We aim to examine the association between suboptimal sleep duration and CVD risk prevalence among Asian American subgroups. METHODS AND RESULTS We used 2012 to 2018 National Health Interview Survey data to examine the association between suboptimal sleep duration and CVD prevalence. We included 6868 self-identifying Asian adults age >40 years (Asian Indian [n=1053], Chinese [n=1415], Filipino [n=1734], and Other Asian [n=2666] adults). Suboptimal sleep was defined as <7 or >9 hours per night. CVD was defined as self-reported stroke, heart attack, coronary artery disease, or angina. Logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios and 95% CI to estimate the association between suboptimal sleep duration and CVD prevalence. Filipino and Other Asian participants with suboptimal sleep had the highest prevalence of CVD. Aggregated Asian American participants with suboptimal sleep duration had a higher prevalence of CVD (odds ratio [95% CI, 1.35 [1.09-1.68]) compared with those with optimal sleep duration. After stratification by race or ethnicity or both, a significant association persisted for Other Asian participants (1.77 [95% CI, 1.27-2.46]) but not among all other Asian American subgroups. CONCLUSIONS Our study highlights the heterogeneity of CVD prevalence associated with suboptimal sleep duration among Asian American adults. Future studies should consider how different measures of sleep duration and quality affect CVD outcomes among disaggregated Asian American subgroups.

Abstract
Introduction The prevalence of hypertension increases with age and differs by race and ethnicity. Among U.S. Asian adults, prevalence is higher for Filipino adults than for other major Asian subgroups, but whether this disparity exists across the adult lifespan is unknown. This study examined hypertension prevalence by age decade, comparing Filipino adults with South Asian, Chinese, Black, Hispanic, and White adults. Methods This cross-sectional study used 2015-2016 electronic health record data from a Northern California integrated healthcare delivery system for 1,839,603 adults aged 30-79 years, including 128,124 Filipino adults. Hypertension was defined by diagnosis codes. Sex-specific prevalence was calculated by race and ethnicity overall and by 10-year age decade from ages 30-39 years to 70-79 years. The prevalence of hypertension among 5 racial and ethnic groups was compared within each decade (with Filipino as the reference), adjusting for age, English language, diabetes, smoking, and weight category. Results Decade-specific prevalence of hypertension among Filipino men and women, respectively, was 9.7% and 8.5% for ages 30-39 years, 26.0% and 23.9% for ages 40-49 years, 45.9% and 44.4% for ages 50-59 years, 65.4% and 63.9% for ages 60-69 years, and 82.1% and 82.9% for ages 70-79 years. Across all age decades, hypertension prevalence among Filipino adults largely tracked with Black adults and was much higher than among South Asian, Chinese, White, and Hispanic adults. This pattern remained after adjusting for covariates, with the largest differences observed for adults aged <60 years. Conclusions Similar to Black adults, Filipino adults have persistently higher hypertension prevalence than South Asian, Chinese, Hispanic, and White adults across the adult lifespan. These findings underscore the importance of surveillance and prevention efforts for this high-risk Asian group beginning in early adulthood.

Abstract
The monolithic misrepresentation of Asian American (AsAm) populations has maintained assumptions that AsAm people are not burdened by health disparities and social and economic inequities. However, the story is more nuanced. We critically review AsAm health research to present knowledge of AsAm health profiles from the past two decades and present findings and opportunities across three topical domains: (a) general descriptive knowledge, (b) factors affecting health care uptake, and (c) effective interventions. Much of the literature emphasized underutilization of health care services; low knowledge and awareness among AsAms about health-related risk factors, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment; inadequate efforts by health systems to improve language access, provider-patient communication, and trust; and the critical roles of community- and faith-based organizations and leaders in health promotion initiatives. Future opportunities for AsAm health research will require adoption of and significant investment in community-engaged research infrastructure to increase representation, funding, and research innovation for AsAm communities.

Abstract
With more than 4.2 million people, Filipino Americans are the third largest Asian group in the US and the largest Southeast Asian group in the country. Despite relatively favorable average socioeconomic indicators compared to the general US population, Filipino Americans face a significant burden of traditional cardiovascular risk factors, particularly among men. Moreover, Filipino Americans have high rates of cardiovascular death, often occurring at a younger age compared to other minority groups and Non-Hispanic White adults. In view of these trends, in 2010 the American Heart Association designated Filipino Americans as a high cardiovascular risk group. Despite this, in 2023, Filipino Americans remain underrepresented in landmark cardiovascular cohort studies and are often over looked as a group at increased cardiovascular risk. In this updated narrative review, we summarize the current state of knowledge about the burden of cardiovascular risk factors and diseases experienced by the Filipino American population. Our aim is to inform enhanced clinical, population, and policy-level prevention interventions and boost research in this space.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Filipino Americans are one of the largest Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) populations in the United States (US). Previous studies suggest that Filipino Americans have one of the highest incidence rates of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) among AAPI subgroups. Despite the expected increase in Filipino Americans with ADRD, no studies to-date have validated neuropsychological measures in the United States for speakers of Tagalog, a major language spoken by Filipino Americans. A significant barrier to dementia care and diagnosis is the lack of linguistically and socioculturally appropriate cognitive tasks for Tagalog speakers. To address this need, we developed and piloted the Cognitive Assessment for Tagalog Speakers (CATS), the first neuropsychological battery for the detection of ADRD in Filipino American Tagalog speakers. METHODS Based on evidence-based neuropsychological batteries, we adapted and constructed de novo tasks to measure performance across 4 main cognitive domains: visual/verbal memory, visuospatial functioning, speech and language, and frontal/executive functioning. Tasks were developed with a team of bilingual English/Tagalog, bicultural Filipino American/Canadian experts, including a neurologist, speech-language pathologist, linguist, and neuropsychologist. We recruited Tagalog-speaking participants of age 50+ through social media advertisements and recruitment registries for this cross-sectional study. We present the CATS design and protocol. RESULTS To-date, the CATS battery has been administered to 26 healthy control participants (age 64.5 ± 7.8 years, 18F/8 M) at an academic institution in Northern California, United States. The development and administration of the CATS battery demonstrated its feasibility but also highlighted the need to consider the effects of bilingualism, language typology, and cultural factors in result interpretation. DISCUSSION The CATS battery provides a mechanism for cognitive assessment of Filipino Americans, a population that has been underrepresented in ADRD research. As we move toward the treatment and cure of ADRD, linguistically and socioculturally appropriate cognitive tests become even more important for equitable care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study assessed the CVD risk factors among Filipino women (FW) in Korea and compared them with FW in the Philippines and women in Korea (KW). METHODS A cohort of 504 women from the Filipino Women's Health and Diet Study (FiLWHEL) aged 20-57 years old were age-matched (1:1 ratio) with women from the 2013 National Nutrition Survey in the Philippines and the 2013-2015 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Anthropometric data, blood pressure (BP), lipid and glucose levels were compared across the four populations by calculating the odds ratio (OR)s and 95% confidence interval (CI)s using conditional logistic regression models. RESULTS Compared to KW, FW in Korea and FW in the Philippines were more than 2 and 3 times higher odds of having obesity for BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 and waist circumference ≥ 88 cm, respectively. However, FW in Korea had the highest odds (OR 5.51, 95% CI 3.18-9.56) of having hypertension compared to KW. FW in the Philippines had the highest odds of having dyslipidemia (compared to KW, total cholesterol ≥ 200 mg/dL: OR 8.83, 95% CI 5.30-14.71; LDL-C ≥ 130 mg/dL: OR 3.25, 95% CI 2.13-4.98; and triglyceride ≥ 150 mg/dL: OR 2.59, 95% CI 1.59-4.22), but FW in Korea and KW had similar prevalence of dyslipidemia. CONCLUSIONS FW in Korea had higher prevalence of obesity and hypertension, with similar prevalence of dyslipidemia compared to KW in this sample. FW in the Philippines had higher prevalence of dyslipidemia compared to FW in Korea. Further prospective studies are warranted to examine the CVD risk factors among continental and native-born Filipino women.

Abstract
Introduction Among all Asian American subgroups, Filipino-Americans have consistently been shown to have the highest rates of hypertension, raising risks of heart attack and stroke. Despite this alarming fact, little has been done to investigate culturally-sensitive interventions to control hypertension rates in this vulnerable population. To address the lack of culturally-relevant lifestyle options for blood pressure management currently available to the Filipino community, this exploratory pilot study used a design thinking approach informed by culinary medicine to develop a culturally-tailored, heart-healthy, and low sodium recipe cookbook for Filipino Americans with hypertension and evaluate its feasibility as a hypertension intervention. Methods Our team developed a cookbook using participatory methods and design thinking, utilizing input from five Filipino culinary experts and a Registered Dietitian. The cookbook incorporates traditional Filipino recipes, excerpts from community members' interviews, and nutrient analyses. Twenty Filipinx-identifying individuals* who self-reported physician-diagnosed hypertension were recruited from Filipino community-based organizations, enrolled into this study, provided with the cookbook, and asked to cook at least one recipe. Pre- and post-intervention surveys were conducted and centered around behavior change and features of the cookbook. Results This study provided evidence for the cookbook's acceptability and feasibility, with participants' open-ended responses revealing that the recipes, nutrition labels, illustrations, and cultural aspects of the cookbook increased motivation to achieve dietary change, including reducing sodium in their diet to improve their blood pressure. Participant responses also indicated positive behavior change as a result of using the cookbook, with participants reporting increased likelihood of adopting recommended actions to lower their BP after utilizing the cookbook ( x ¯ = 80.83%), compared to before ( x ¯ = 63.75%, p < 0.008), according to Hypertension Self-Care Management scaled scores. Discussion In conclusion, the results of this pilot study demonstrated acceptability of this unique cookbook and provide preliminary findings consistent with increased motivation in participants to make dietary changes and improve personal health, drawing attention to the importance of considering future culturally-tailored health interventions. Next steps should include a robust, randomized controlled trial design comparing measured blood pressure outcomes of an intervention vs. control group. *Filipinx is an inclusive term representing the gender identities of all participants in our study.

Abstract
Health disparities are well-documented among different racial and ethnic minority groups in the United States. Filipino Americans (FAs) are the third-largest Asian-American group in the USA and are commonly grouped under the Asian categorization. FAs have a higher prevalence of cardiometabolic disorders than non-Hispanic Whites and other Asian subgroups with rates comparable to African Americans. Although no major epidemiological studies have ascertained the prevalence of cardiometabolic diseases in FAs, limited reports suggest that FAs have a higher prevalence of dyslipidemia, hypertension, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, hyperuricemia, and gout than non-FAs. A recent genetic study has shown that FAs could have the highest prevalence of a genetic polymorphism strongly associated with the development of gout and gout-related comorbidities. While developing cardiometabolic disorders is a heterogeneous and multifaceted process, the overall prevalence of certain cardiometabolic disorders parallel the prevalence of population-level risk factors, including genetics, dietary lifestyles, health beliefs, and social determinants of health. Therefore, assessment of the Filipino cuisine, health behaviors among Filipinos, socio-cultural factors, and acculturation to living in the USA are equally critical. Ascertaining the contribution of the biological causes to disease onset and the different psychosocial factors that could modulate disease risk or disease management are needed. Ultimately, a multilevel research approach is critical to assess the role of biological and non-biological risk factors of cardiometabolic disorders in FAs to inform culturally appropriate health promotion, disease prevention strategies, and a personalized approach to health.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) are an expanding worldwide crisis. In the absence of scientific breakthroughs, the global prevalence of ADRD will continue to increase as more people are living longer. Racial or ethnic minority groups have an increased risk and incidence of ADRD and have often been neglected by the scientific research community. There is mounting evidence that vascular insults in the brain can initiate a series of biological events leading to neurodegeneration, cognitive impairment, and ADRD. We are a group of researchers interested in developing and expanding ADRD research, with an emphasis on vascular contributions to dementia, to serve our local diverse community. Toward this goal, the primary objective of this review was to investigate and better understand health disparities in Alabama and the contributions of the social determinants of health to those disparities, particularly in the context of vascular dysfunction in ADRD. Here, we explain the neurovascular dysfunction associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) as well as the intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors contributing to dysfunction of the neurovascular unit (NVU). Next, we ascertain ethnoregional health disparities of individuals living in Alabama, as well as relevant vascular risk factors linked to AD. We also discuss current pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment options for neurovascular dysfunction, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and AD, including relevant studies and ongoing clinical trials. Overall, individuals in Alabama are adversely affected by social and structural determinants of health leading to health disparities, driven by rurality, ethnic minority status, and lower socioeconomic status (SES). In general, these communities have limited access to healthcare and healthy food and other amenities resulting in decreased opportunities for early diagnosis of and pharmaceutical treatments for ADRD. Although this review is focused on the current state of health disparities of ADRD patients in Alabama, future studies must include diversity of race, ethnicity, and region to best be able to treat all individuals affected by ADRD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Filipino Americans have greater risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D) and related complications compared to other Asian populations and non-Hispanic Whites. There are few diabetes intervention studies focused on Filipinos and limited evidence regarding the best recruitment strategies for this hard-to-reach population. METHODS This article examined barriers and facilitators to recruitment of Filipino families for the "Caring for Asian Americans through Research and Education on T2D" (CARE-T2D) study, which took place in California from June 2018 through June 2019. RESULTS Recruitment of 50 Filipino dyads (parent with T2D and adult child) were successfully met. Gaining trust through culturally tailored strategies was key in recruiting Filipino participants. Tiwala (gaining trust) strategies involved: 1) using Filipino staff as role models for research engagement and 2) incorporating narrative communications or "kuwentuhan" (Filipino cultural storytelling) with recruitment. Other facilitating strategies included in-person presentations at local colleges and organizations, Filipino community leaders' support, snowball sampling, previous study participant listservs, and posting fliers on family/friends' personal social media sites. Barriers to recruitment included research mistrust, confidentiality concerns, and risks of violating cultural values. CONCLUSION To our knowledge, this is the first study to recruit Filipino family dyads. Findings will inform researchers and clinicians on how best to recruit Filipino families in community health-related research and public health programs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The Asian American population in the U.S. comprises various, ethnically diverse subgroups. Traditionally, this population has been studied as a single, aggregated group, potentially masking differences in risk among subgroups. Analyses using disaggregated data can help better characterize the health needs of different Asian subpopulations and inform targeted, effective public health interventions. We assessed the prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors and atherosclerotic CVD (ASCVD) and their associations with socioeconomic factors among Chinese, Asian Indian, Filipino and Other Asian subjects, compared with non-Hispanic White (NHW) subjects in the U.S. METHODS : Cross-sectional study using data from 298,286 adults from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) from 2007 to 2018. We utilized chi-squared tests to compare characteristics across subgroups. Weighted proportions and unadjusted and adjusted logistic regression models were utilized to examine the associations between Asian subgroups, self-reported CVD risk factors and self-reported ASCVD, as well as between socioeconomic factors within each Asian subgroup. RESULTS : Asian Indian subjects had the highest prevalence of diabetes (12.5%), while Filipino subjects had the highest prevalence of hyperlipidemia (27.7%), hypertension (29.8%) and obesity (19.8%). Despite this, the prevalence of self-reported ASCVD was lower in all Asian groups compared with NHWs. Chinese subjects had the lowest odds of having each of the CVD risk factors assessed. CONCLUSION : We found considerable heterogeneity in the distribution of risk factors as well as ASCVD among Asian subgroups in the US. Compared with health system or community-based reports, the prevalence of risk factors and ASCVD may be underestimated in some Asian NHIS subgroups. There is an urgent need for efforts to improve recruitment of Asian participants of heterogeneous socioeconomic backgrounds in national surveys, as well as to perform a thorough assessment of risk factors and disease in this population, not relying solely on self-report.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The food retail environment is an important determinant of food access and the ability to achieve a healthy diet. However, immigrant communities may procure their food in different ways than the mainstream population owing to preferences for specific cultural products or limited English language proficiency. The objective of this analysis was to describe the grocery shopping patterns and behaviours of one of the largest immigrant groups in New York City, Chinese Americans - a group experiencing high poverty and cardio-metabolic disparities. DESIGN Cross-sectional survey data. SETTING Community-based sample. PARTICIPANTS Self-identified Chinese Americans in the New York metropolitan area (n 239). RESULTS Three shopping patterns were identified: type 1: shopped weekly at an ethnic grocery store - and nowhere else; type 2: shopped weekly at a non-ethnic grocery store, with occasional shopping at an ethnic store and type 3: did not perform weekly shopping. Type 1 v. type 2 shoppers tended to have lower education levels (37·5 v. 78·0 % with college degree); to be on public insurance (57·6 v. 22·8 %); speak English less well (18·4 v. 41·4 %); be food insecure (47·2 v. 24·2 %; P < 0·01 for all) and to travel nearly two miles further to shop at their primary grocery store (β = -1·55; 95 % CI -2·81, -0·30). DISCUSSION There are distinct grocery shopping patterns amongst urban-dwelling Chinese Americans corresponding to demographic and sociocultural factors that may help inform health interventions in this understudied group. Similar patterns may exist among other immigrant groups, lending preliminary support for an alternative conceptualisation of how immigrant communities interact with the food retail environment.

Abstract
Hypertension is a common chronic health condition affecting Filipino Americans. This pilot study examined the feasibility of addressing high rates of hypertension among Filipino Americans through the implementation of a culturally tailored education intervention. Filipino Americans living in the Greater Philadelphia Area were recruited through community-based organizations for participation and were engaged using a community-based participatory research (CBPR) framework. The study included pre- and post-intervention blood pressure measurements, self-reported body mass index, and questionnaires about physical activity and salt intake. The intervention to promote physical activity and reduce salt intake was conducted through two educational sessions and was accompanied by follow-up at 3 months and by the collection of urine samples for 24-h urinary sodium intake biomarker analysis. Following intervention, a non-statistically significant decrease in urine sodium was observed in both the intervention and the control groups. For systolic blood pressure, a reduction of 12.6 mmHg and an increase in 5.3 mmHg was observed in the intervention and control groups, respectively. Diastolic pressure decreased 3.8 mmHg for the intervention group and increased 5.6 mmHg among controls. The culturally tailored education intervention reported here represents a promising tool for blood pressure reduction in high-risk ethnic populations. The methods used were effective for the recruitment and retention of ethnic minorities in a community-based setting.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Filipinxs are the second-largest Asian subgroup in the USA. While Filipinxs are most often considered Asian when constructing aggregate ethnic categories, recent research has identified a trend of a small portion of Filipinxs identifying as Latinx or multiracial. However, little research had addressed how identification with different aggregate ethnic categories may have implications for identifying health disparities among Filipinxs and how these compare to non-Hispanic whites. METHODS Bivariate and multivariable regression analyses using 2011-2018 California Health Interview Survey data, comparing Asian Filipinxs, Latinx Filipinxs, and multiracial Filipinxs. RESULTS In bivariate analyses, Asian Filipinxs had a higher prevalence of diabetes than Latinx or multiracial Filipinxs. After controlling for sociodemographics, Latinx Filipinxs had significantly lower odds of having diabetes or heart disease than Asian Filipinxs. Compared to non-Latinx Whites, Asian Filipinxs reported higher odds of being in fair/poor health, obese or overweight, high blood pressure, and diabetes, multiracial Filipinxs reported higher odds of being obese or overweight, and Latinx Filipinxs reported lower odds of heart disease. DISCUSSION These findings suggest emerging differences in health linked to identification with different ethnic categories, underscoring the need to investigate nuances among Filipinxs in future research as well as highlighting the utility of emerging sociological insights in health research.

Abstract
Health literacy is understudied in the context of social networks. Our pilot study goal was to consider this research gap among vulnerable, low-income mothers of minority ethnic background in the state of Hawai'i, USA. Recruitment followed a modified snowball sampling approach. First, we identified and interviewed seven mothers ("egos") in a state-sponsored home visiting program. We then sought to interview individuals whom each mother said was part of her health decision-making network ("first-level alters") and all individuals whom the first-level alters said were part of their health decision-making networks ("second-level alters"). Health literacy was self-reported using a validated item. A total of 18 people were interviewed, including all mothers (n = 7), 35% of the first-level alters (n = 7/20), and 36% of the second-level alters (n = 4/11). On average, the mothers made health decisions with 2.9 people (range: 1-6); partners/spouses and mothers/mothers-in-law were most common. One mother had low health literacy; her two first-level alters also had low health literacy. Across the full sample, the average number of people in individuals' health decision networks was 2.5 (range: 0-7); 39% of those interviewed had low health literacy. This can inform the design of future studies and successful interventions to improve health literacy.

Abstract
PURPOSE The Health of Philippine Emigrants Study (HoPES) longitudinally investigates over 3 years whether migrating from the Philippines to the USA results in increased risk for obesity relative to non-migrants in the Philippines. The study is designed to test the healthy immigrant hypothesis by collecting health measures from migrants starting from a pre-migration baseline and enrolling a non-migrant cohort matched on age, gender and education for comparison. PARTICIPANTS A migrant cohort (n=832; 36.5% of eligible individuals) was recruited from clients of the Commission on Filipinos Overseas prior to exiting the Philippines. A non-migrant cohort (n=805; 68.6% eligible individuals) was recruited from community households in municipalities throughout the cities of Manila and Cebu. By intention, these two cohorts are comparable demographically, including urban/rural status of residency in the Philippines at baseline. FINDINGS TO DATE At baseline, compared with non-migrants, migrants report significantly better self-rated health and less depression, and have significantly larger hip circumference and lower waist-to-hip ratio, as well as significantly higher mean systolic blood pressure and higher mean level of apolipoprotein B. Baseline results can offer insight into the health status of both migrant and non-migrant populations and may be useful for obesity prevention efforts. FUTURE PLANS Longitudinal data collection is scheduled to be completed in December 2020 when the final data collection wave (36 months after baseline) will conclude. Both migrant and non-migrant cohorts will be maintained beyond the current prospective study, so long as research funding allows and emerges for new study questions. Findings from future longitudinal analyses can inform the need and design of health-related/relevant interventions, whether clinical, behavioural, educational, or policy, that can be implemented at the individual or population level.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE Race and gender disparities in the context of appropriate treatment with lipid-lowering therapies do exist. The 2013 American College of Cardiology (ACC)/American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines outlined four groups, three for primary prevention and one for secondary prevention, whom would benefit from statin therapy to target atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). The application of these recommendations in Filipino women living in the United States is unknown; however, this population is known to have elevated cardiovascular risk. Socio-economic and clinical characteristics that predict statin utilization of this Asian American subgroup need to be explored. METHODS This was an exploratory analysis of data collected during a cross-sectional study of Filipino-American Women (FAW). The Pooled Cohort equation was used to estimate 10-year ASCVD risk. Bivariate analysis was employed to determine the association between statin treatment and clinical and socio-economic factors. Data were analysed using SAS® 9.4; statistical significance was set at P < 0.05. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION A total of 384 women (mean age 56.3 years) were included in the original study, and the average 10-year ASCVD risk was 3.5 ± 3.7%. Upon applying the 2013 ACC/AHA guidelines, 97 FAW were categorized into one of the primary prevention groups. Women considered to benefit from a statin based on the guideline criteria but were not prescribed a statin were considered the not statin treated group (n = 55). From the original cohort, 93 FAW reported current statin therapy use and were categorized as statin treated. The clinical characteristics associated with not being statin treated were as follows: untreated blood pressure (P = 0.012), higher diastolic blood pressure (P = 0.015), higher total cholesterol (P < 0.001), higher triglycerides (P = 0.041), higher low-density lipoprotein (P < 0.001) and higher glucose (P = 0.011). The socio-economic factor associated with not being statin treated was having two or more insurance payers (P = 0.005). Overall, this population had a waist circumference and body mass index (BMI) that exceeds guidelines for Asian women (31.5 or 80 cm). WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION Predictors of statin utilization in FAW are not well documented in the literature. These findings emphasize room for improvement for the prescribing of statins in primary prevention for this study population. Applying culturally appropriate screening strategies to identify cardiovascular risk factors early such as BMI or waist circumference may assist with quantifying patients into one of the statin benefit groups if eligible.

Abstract
Physical activity (PA) serves a critical role in maintaining health and preventing chronic diseases, though its influence on high-risk Asian American populations is unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine PA levels among Filipino and Korean Americans at high risk of hypertension and to identify sociodemographic and health-related factors associated with PA levels in these populations. A cross-sectional survey was administered to 137 participants in the Greater Philadelphia Area. Data was collected on PA levels, sociodemographic factors, and health factors. Multinomial logistic regression was conducted to determine predictors associated with low, moderate, and high PA and predictive probabilities were calculated for interaction terms, incorporating ethnicity and blood pressure variables. Overall, 42.33% of participants belonged to the moderately active PA group and 21.90% belonged to the highly active group. In the final multinomial regression model, it was found that having gone to college increased the odds of being in the moderately active PA group (coef. = 1.96, p = 0.034), while having high blood pressure reduced the odds of being in the moderately active PA group (coef. = -2.21, p = 0.022). Lastly, being Korean versus Filipino reduced the odds of being in the highly active category (coef. = -2.89, p = 0.035). Based on predictive probabilities, Koreans and Filipinos with high blood pressure were more likely to belong in the low active PA category (52.31% and 46.33%). These findings highlight the need for culturally relevant PA interventions for promoting and increasing PA levels to prevent and manage hypertension among these populations.

Abstract
Introduction Cultural tailoring of interventions can be effective in reducing health disparities by attracting underserved populations to health promotion programs and improving their outcomes. The purpose of this systematic review was to assess what is known about increasing access to and participation in cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention and control programs among Filipino Americans. Methods PubMed MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Sociologic Abstracts were searched for peer-reviewed studies and dissertations conducted in the United States from 2004 through 2016. Results A total of 347 articles were identified through the search, and 9 articles reporting on 7 interventions focused on CVD prevention in a Filipino American sample were included. All but one intervention used evidence-based curricula, and implementation varied across sites. All but 2 interventions used word-of-mouth advertising from friends, family, and community leaders to increase participation. The Filipino cultural values of food, social relationships, and family were prevalent aspects across interventions tailored for Filipino Americans. Aspects of spirituality and the arts were integrated into only 3 studies. Conclusion Given the burden of CVD in Filipino American populations, tailored interventions rooted in Filipino cultural values are vital to address this known health disparity.

Abstract
The cultural health beliefs of the Filipino population and colonial history of medicine in the Philippines could mean high use of complementary and alternative therapies (CAM) and increased engagement in medical pluralism (i.e., combined use of conventional medicine and CAM) among the U.S. Filipino population, the fourth largest immigrant group in the United States. However, there is limited research regarding U.S. Filipinos’ health behaviors related to CAM use and medical pluralism engagement. The purpose of this study was to explore patterns of CAM use and medical pluralism practices of Filipino adults living in the United States. Data from Filipino adult respondents of the 2012 National Health Interview Survey adult CAM supplement were analyzed to determine most common CAM used, most common conditions for which CAM was used as a treatment, reasons for using CAM for treatment of health conditions, and sources of recommendations for CAM as a treatment in this population. Dietary supplements were the most common CAM used by Filipino adults living in the United States. A small number of U.S. Filipino adults reported using CAM to treat pain-related and cardiovascular conditions, with the most common source of recommendations coming from friends and family members. Most common reasons for using CAM for treatment of health condition were: CAM is natural; CAM had a holistic approach, and CAM could be taken/practiced independently. Based on the findings of the study, Filipino adults living in the United States engage in a pluralistic approach to health by using CAM for treatment of health conditions. Analysis of the 2012 NHIS adult CAM supplement provided an overview of Filipino adults’ patterns of CAM use and medical pluralism; however, future research is still needed to explain such health behavior patterns.

Abstract
Filipino American women (FAW) have high incidence of coronary heart disease and high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). The distribution of rs11206510 proprotein-convertase subtilisin-kexin type 9 (PCSK9) and rs1122608 low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), known for genetic influences on LDL-C, is unknown in this population. The objective of this study was to examine the genetic determinants of LDL-C, their association with LDL-C, and effects of statins on LDL-C given the genetic determinants in this high-risk population. Data were obtained from the FAW Cardiovascular Study ( N = 338) of women ages 40 to 65 years from four major U.S. cities between 2011 and 2013. Roche Modular methodology and Luminex-oligonucleotide ligation assay procedure were used for allele frequency, genotype, LDL-C, and lipid analysis. Analysis of variance was used to determine differences between genotype groups. Genotype and statin effect on LDL-C were tested using the generalized linear model procedure of SAS. The distribution of rs11206510 PCSK9 genotypes was 88% TT, 11% TC, and 1% CC, and the rs1122608 LDLR genotype distribution was 83% GG, 17% GT, and 0% TT. These SNPs showed no association with mean LDL-C in this cohort. FAW on statin medications had lower LDL levels regardless of their PCSK9 or LDLR genotypes. Most FAW had a gain-of-function allele of PCSK9 and LDLR. This predominance in FAW cohort may account for the high percentage of subjects with elevated LDL-C. In a population at high risk for hypercholesterolemia, optimal treatment with statins should be considered where appropriate.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine factorial validity, test-retest reliability, and internal consistency of a Tagalog-language food behavior checklist (FBC) for a low-income Filipino population. METHODS Participants (n = 160) completed the FBC on 2 occasions 3 weeks apart. Factor structure was examined using principal component analysis. For internal consistency, Cronbach α was calculated. For test-retest reliability, Spearman correlation or intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was calculated between scores at the 2 points. RESULTS All but 1 item loaded on 6 factors: fruit and vegetable quantity, fruit and vegetable variety, fast food, sweetened beverage, healthy fat, and diet quality. Cronbach α was .75 for the total scale (range, .39-.76 for subscales). Spearman correlation was 0.78 (ICC, 0.79) for the total scale (range, 0.66-0.80 [ICC, 0.68-0.80] for subscales). CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS The FBC demonstrated adequate factorial validity, test-retest reliability, and internal consistency. With additional testing, the FBC may be used to evaluate the US Department of Agriculture's nutrition education programs for Tagalog speakers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among all racial and ethnic populations in the USA. Cardiovascular risks and cardioprotective factors have been disparately estimated among Asian American subpopulations. AIMS The study's purpose was to describe the cardiometabolic risks and lifestyle health behaviors associated with cardiovascular disease, considering age and gender, in Filipinos, the second largest Asian American population. METHODS Secondary analysis was conducted of behavioral (smoking, walking, body mass index and soda, fast food and fruit/vegetable consumption), cardiometabolic (hypertension and diabetes) and heart disease variables in the 2011-2012 California Health Interview Survey. The metropolitan sample of Filipino American adults included 57.3% women and had a mean age of 47.9 ± 18.3 years ( n = 555). RESULTS Among the sample, 7.4% had heart disease, 38.9% had hypertension, 16.6% had diabetes, 12.4% smoked cigarettes, 83.2% were insufficiently active, 54.2% were overweight/obese, 21.8% routinely ate fast food, 13.2% routinely drank soda and 90.3% did not meet the fruit/vegetable consumption recommendation. Age (unadjusted odds ratio [OR] = 1.0, p < 0.0001), hypertension (unadjusted OR = 4.8, p < 0.0001) and diabetes (unadjusted OR = 3.3, p = 0.001) were associated with heart disease. Hypertension was the single greatest heart disease risk, controlling for diabetes, age and gender (adjusted OR = 3.1, p = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS Primary and secondary prevention and treatment of hypertension should be paramount, along with promotion of glucose control, regular moderate-intensity physical activity, weight management and increased fruit and vegetable consumption in the Filipino American population. A multidisciplinary, chronic care model that is population-specific, emphasizes integrated, comprehensive care and provides linkages between primary healthcare and community resources is recommended for practice.
