Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the relationship of mental health literacy with beliefs toward mental illness and attitudes toward seeking psychological help in Turkish society. METHOD This study was a descriptive cross-sectional and correlational study comprising 400 participants (mean age = 28.65 years, SD = 9.83 years). Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHL), Beliefs Toward Mental Illness Scale (BMI), and Attitudes Toward Seeking Psychological Help Scale (ASPH-S). RESULTS A statistically significant negative weak correlation was observed between MHL and BMI total scores (r = -0.170; p < 0.001). A statistically significant negative weak correlation was also observed between BMI and ASPH-S total scores (r = -0.186; p < 0.001). Mental health literacy accounted for 5.4% of the variability in BMI scores (F = 11.486; p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Mental health literacy positively affects beliefs toward mental illness. Intervention programs should include knowledge about mental disorders and stigma, which will help promote positive beliefs toward mental illness. Abstract
PURPOSE The objective of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of the European Health Literacy Scale Child Form in Turkish children and to examine the instrument's psychometric properties. DESIGN AND METHODS A total of 843 students aged 9-11 years in primary and secondary school were included in this scale adaptation study. In the validity analyses of the Health Literacy Scale Child Form-Turkish form (HLS-Child-Q15-TR), language and content validity were used to determine cultural compatibility, and exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis were used in structural analyses. Reliability was investigated by examining internal consistency and test-retest reliability. RESULTS The content validity of the HLS-Child-Q15-TR was found to be high. The model fit values of the confirmatory factor analysis results of the three-factor model consisting of health care, disease prevention and health promotion dimensions of the HLS-Child-Q15-TR were found to be satisfactory (x2/df = 2.68, CFI = 0.945, GFI = 0.965, and RMSEA = 0.045). HLS-Child-Q15-TR item-total correlations were above 0.30 and Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.831. The test-retest correlation coefficient of the HLS-Child-Q15-TR was 0.98 and stable over time. CONCLUSIONS HLS-Child-Q15-TR is valid and reliable in Turkish children aged 9-11 years. It is recommended that the valid and reliable HLS-Child-Q15-TR be used to measure the health literacy levels of Turkish children under 12 years of age. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS HLS-Child-Q15-TR valid and reliable instrument for use with Turkish children aged 9-11 years. HLS-Chıld-Q15-TR will make an important contribution to the Turkish culture in evaluating the health literacy levels of children 9-11 years age in Turkey.

Abstract
The importance of physician-patient communication on patient health outcomes has been globally known. Poor communication in clinical settings, including in telemedicine visits, has been identified as a key barrier to successful medical consultation. This barrier is even more prevalent among people from linguistically and culturally diverse communities. This study investigated the influence of physician-patient communication on telemedicine patient health outcomes in Indonesia, a developing country with great linguistic and cultural diversity. This study utilized secondary data from a telemedicine utilization survey conducted during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Socioeconomic factors and communication features were included as predictors of patients' health improvement. Logistic regressions were utilized to examine the significance of the communication features on patients' health. The analysis results indicated that five communication features including the adequacy of consultation length, a timely physician response, the provision of an explanation of the medication and possible side effects, the patient's ability to utter their physical condition and opinion regarding medication goals, and the patient's ability to comprehend physician explanations and instructions were significantly associated with the patient's health outcomes. Physicians and healthcare providers should focus on the provision of communication features revealed in this study to elevate the likelihood of improved health conditions in telemedicine patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Since health literacy is known to be related to health outcomes, it should be measured to explain how it is associated with the health status of the population. Health literacy tools are designed to measure different dimensions of health literacy of individuals based on their objective. The AAHLS tool is comprehensive and can cover all aspects of health literacy. Overall in Ethiopia, there is no standard health literacy tool that has been developed or/and validated. Therefore, the aim of this study was to adapt and validate the All Aspects of Health Literacy Scale (AAHLS) in healthcare facilities in Addis Ababa city, Ethiopia. METHODS A mixed-method, facility-based, cross-sectional study was conducted in Addis Ababa city from February 1, 2022, to May 30, 2022. The study was conducted in three phases: forward and backward translation and expert review, cognitive interviews and survey administration. For the cognitive interviews, a total of 16 participants and for the survey administration, 199 participants were involved. Coding and analysis of the qualitative data were performed using OpenCode 4.03 computer software. Then, pretesting (survey administration) was conducted to check the validity and reliability of the tool. CFA was conducted using SPSS version 26 and Stata version 14. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The original three response categories were revised to five response categories based on the cognitive interview findings and expert reviews. The survey was administered to 199 participants, 55.8% of whom were males. The Kaiser‒Meyer‒Olkin measure of sampling adequacy was 0.685, with a significant difference according to Bartlett's test of sphericity (p < 0.001). After removing the empowerment factor model fit indices, the internal reliability and convergent and divergent validities improved. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the model fit indices of the tool were satisfactory. The overall internal consistency, Cronbach's alpha, was 0.71. CONCLUSION The three response categories of the tool were revised to five response categories. The AAHLS tool was revised to include 10 items. The tool has exhibited adequate model fitness. The validated tool can be used for future health literacy assessments and interventions.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Research on health literacy is still at an early stage, lacking a dedicated measurement instrument for assessing children's and adolescents' health literacy. Such tools are necessary to generate the evidence required for informed intervention development. This study translated the validated German HLS-Child-Q15 into the Nepalese context, creating the HLS-Child-Q22-NEP. METHODS The research team initially created the HLS-Child-Q22-NEP using an additional item pool. We conducted thirteen one-on-one cognitive interviews with adolescent students from community schools in three districts of Nepal during the pre-test. We employed verbal probing techniques and deductively analysed the interviews based on Tourneau's model, uncovering four main themes: (1) comprehension (with the two sub-categories: a) item comprehension and b) word comprehension); (2) retrieval; (3) judgement; and (4) response. RESULTS Overall, participants responded positively to the HLS-Child-Q22-NEP. However, this study revealed comprehension challenges such as unfamiliarity, misunderstandings, and translation issues. Additionally, the study identified retrieval challenges and poor judgement, indicating limitations in the assessment. Participants experienced varying levels of difficulty with some items, emphasising the need for revised instructions. Subsequent revisions, guided by pretest insights, led to the development of the HLS-Child-Q24-NEP. CONCLUSION The development of the HLS-Child-Q22-NEP is a significant step in addressing Nepali adolescents' lack of health literacy measurement. Despite its generally positive reception, this study encountered challenges in comprehending the scale, prompting enhancements, and developing the HLS-Child-Q24-NEP. Further research, both qualitative and quantitative, is necessary to evaluate the validity and reliability of the modified items.

Abstract
AIMS To identify the components and characteristics of health literacy interventions for people with disabilities and to explore the outcomes in terms of health literacy competencies. DESIGN A mixed-method systematic literature review. REVIEW METHODS The search results were reported based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis. The quality appraisal was guided by the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. The contents of each intervention were mapped to the health literacy intervention model and the outcomes were annotated using the integrated model of health literacy. DATA SOURCES The literature search was conducted using several electronic databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane library and PsycINFO in December 2022. RESULTS Ten studies were selected for this systematic literature review. Seven studies were quantitative, two were qualitative and one was a mixed-methods study. The four components of the health literacy interventions included empowering individuals with low-health literacy (n = 10), strengthening individuals' social support system (n = 3), improving communication with health professionals (n = 1) and reducing barriers to access health systems (n = 3). No intervention addressed improving health professionals' health literacy competencies. Health literacy competencies identified as outcomes in the studies included access (n = 1), understand (n = 7), appraise (n = 1) and apply (n = 9) the health information. CONCLUSIONS The significant findings of this systematic literature review provide baseline data and evidence for developing health literacy interventions for people with disabilities. However, this review demonstrates that only a handful of intervention studies have addressed the low-health literacy of people with disabilities. Further and more rigorous interventions addressing health literacy for people with diverse disabilities are warranted. IMPACT This review provides insights into how health literacy interventions can be tailored to the type of disability. Further, efforts should be expanded to comprehensively promote all the four core competencies of health literacy to reduce health disparities for individuals living with disabilities. Abstract
Introduction Health literacy (HL) is both a direct determinant and a mediator of health outcomes. Research on the prevalence and determinants of HL in terms of its functional, communicative, and critical domains is scarce in the state of Qatar and its surrounding regions. Thus, this study aims to fill the knowledge gap in this area, estimate the levels of functional, communicative, and critical health literacy among the general adult population, and identify its determinants in the state of Qatar. Methods An analytical cross-sectional study with a disproportionate stratified random sampling technique was conducted in 2022. A representative sample of phone numbers was obtained from the Cerner database at Hamad Medical Corporation and approached via well-trained data collectors. A socio-demographic and health-relevant factor questionnaire and the validated All Aspects of Health Literacy scale (AAHLS) were used to collect the data on functional, communicative, and critical HL and their determinants. Descriptive analysis, independent sample t-test, ANOVA, and linear regression were used and yielded the outcomes on HL levels as low, adequate, and high in percentages and the HL determinants. Results A total of 770 participants were included. The study found that 41.5%, 29.3%, and 29.2% of them have adequate, high, and low overall HL levels consecutively. People who participated in the study are older adult, are of Arabic ethnicity, are of Qatari ethnicity, have a lower level of education, have close relatives with a lower level of education, have a lower income, are non-migrants, are not living within a family, sought medical care within the last week, and who do not know if they have a chronic disease or do not have lower overall HL levels compared to the other groups. After linear regression analysis, only the participant's level of education and "last time sought medical care within last week" variable predict the overall HL score. Conclusion Almost half of Qatar's adult population has an adequate HL level, comparable to the HL levels in other regions, despite the limitation in comparison due to variation in context and the HL measurement tools used. The possible determinants are amenable factors to focus on while designing HL interventions and providing healthcare.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to identify the relationship between parental health literacy levels and anthropometric measurements of children in Turkey. METHODS The research was of cross-sectional/correlational design and carried out with 378 consenting parents registered at a Family Health Center. A Sociodemographic Data Form and the Health Literacy Scale for Turkey-32 was used to collect the study data. Data collection was completed at face-to-face interviews held in the consultation department of the family health center. The data were analyzed with the chi-square test and Ordinal Logistic Regression Analysis. RESULTS It was determined that parental health literacy levels were associated with level of education, income status and the state of the parents' employment (p < .05). A relationship was also found between adequate levels of parental health literacy and the health status, weight and height standard deviation scores by age of the parents' children (p < .05). CONCLUSION This study found that adequate levels of parental health literacy were significantly lower than the European average. The study found that adequate parental health literacy had a positive effect on children's anthropometric measurements. Health institutions and health professionals should plan training programs to improve the health literacy of parents when they apply to health institutions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Incidence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is higher in Israel than the European average. Socio-economic differences in ESRD have been reported globally, but many countries lack a national register. Using national data, we assessed which socio-demographic factors are associated with 5-year incidence of ESRD in Israel, where there is universal access to renal replacement therapy (RRT). METHODS Data on all incident ESRD cases aged ≥20 years receiving chronic RRT between 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2018 (N = 7883) were collected from Israel's National Dialysis & Renal Transplant Register. Individual-level data on ESRD cases requiring RRT included residential area, age, gender, ethnicity (Jewish or Arab) and ESRD cause (diabetes, other, unknown/missing). Area-level data included age and sex distribution, socio-economic status (SES) and proportion of Arab population. The associations between individual-level socio-demographic characteristics and ESRD cause were tested in bivariate comparisons. The risk of developing ESRD during the study period (from all and specific causes) was estimated using multiple Poisson regression models with negative binomial distribution, using four parameters, namely sex, ethnicity, SES category and age strata, based on area-level distribution of these parameters, and with the whole population (aged ≥20 years) as the denominator. RESULTS A socio-economic gradient was seen for ESRD from all causes, more marked for diabetic aetiology [rate ratio (RR)=0.45, 95% CI: 0.39-0.52 highest vs lowest SES categories] than from other (RR = 0.64, 95% CI: 0.55-0.75) or unknown cause (RR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0. 62-0.99). Based on population area-level data, predominantly Arab neighbourhoods showed higher risk for ESRD requiring RRT for all causes, with the strongest association for diabetes (RR = 1.69, 95% CI: 1.53-1.86) adjusted for SES, age and sex. CONCLUSIONS A strong socio-economic gradient was demonstrated for ESRD requiring RRT. Arab ethnicity was associated with higher risk for ESRD, especially due to diabetes. Our findings suggest the need for allocation of health resources according to needs and culturally appropriate interventions for improving control of modifiable risk factors for chronic renal failure.

Abstract
People with intellectual disabilities have a significant lower level of health literacy compared to the general population which exacerbates participation of the target group. Therefore, people with ID shall be strengthened with regard to health literacy. Explanatory videos are a promising approach to reach that goal. Yet, explanatory videos are neither frequently used in people with intellectual disabilities nor is known a lot about the efficacy of explanatory videos. Two scoping reviews were conducted. One review is an update of an existing review dealing with Health Literacy in people with intellectual disabilities. The second review focused on explanatory videos and people with intellectual disabilities. CINAHL, PubMed, PubPsych and Web of Science were searched. Health Literacy and intellectual disability: nine publications were identified: five publications focused on several aspects of Health Literacy in the target group. A total of four publications discussed ways to increase Health Literacy in people with intellectual disabilities. One publication described existing barriers in accessing and understanding health-related information for people with intellectual disabilities. Explanatory videos and intellectual disability: No eligible publications could be found. The conceptual discussion on health literacy in people with intellectual disabilities is continuing. Nevertheless, often only small subgroups are addressed. Although ideas for increasing health literacy in people with intellectual disabilities exist, there are only little interventions that were scientifically evaluated. There are publications that deal with explanatory videos in the context of intellectual disability, but they do not focus on the efficacy of these videos or special needs of the target group.

Abstract
The collected data included socio-demographic information and measurements of health literacy, e-health literacy, mental well-being, and sleep hygiene behaviors. The study aimed to provide insights regarding health literacy status and related factors in the general population residing in Qazvin province, Iran. The findings of the study will assist health authorities and policy makers in developing and implementing effective interventions, which in turn, improving health literacy in the community. Additionally, the findings can also aid health sector workers, including non-communicable disease researchers, public health experts, health education specialists, epidemiologists, and sociologists, in their work to improve health literacy and overall health outcomes among general population. Therefore, the present study used paper-pencil method with multi-stage cluster sampling to collect data. Trained research associates (n=25) collected data from 9775 people living in Qazvin province between January and April 2022. All the participants completed the study questionnaires using self-reported paper-pencil mode.

Abstract
This study contributes to the ongoing debate on social determinants of oral health of older persons. Specifically, it examines the direct and indirect effects of health literacy and access to healthcare on oral health status of older persons. The study also investigates whether general health status and health behavior (routine medical check-ups) explain the association of health literacy and healthcare access with oral health status. The gender dimensions of these relationships are also explored. Data were derived from 522 participants aged 50 years and older located in five regions in Ghana. Path analyses in structural equation modeling (SEM) were used to analyse the data. General health status (β = -0.049, p < 0.005), medical check-up (β = 0.124, p < 0.01), and health literacy (β = 0.133, p < 0.01) were positively associated with oral health status. General health status mediated the positive relationship between health literacy and oral health status (β = 0.048, p < 0.01). General health status (β = 0.016, p < 0.05) and medical check-ups (β = 0.025, p < 0.05) mediated the association between access to healthcare and oral health status. The mediational role of routine medical check-up in the association between access to healthcare and oral health status was significantly stronger (B = 0.063, p < 0.01) among men (β = 0.051, p < 0.01) than women (β = 0.003, p > 0.05). Analyses of oral health issues among older persons in Ghana and settings alike must recognize the complex interplay among critical social determinants to initiate pragmatic health and social policy interventions.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aims to investigate the knowledge structure and research trends in child and adolescent health literacy research over the past 30 years by using network text analysis. METHOD The study was conducted in four steps: 1) collecting abstracts, 2) keyword extraction and preprocessing, 3) creation of co-occurrence matrix, and 4) text network analysis. RESULTS As a result of the centrality analysis, the upper-ranked core keywords were "health care," "health behavior," "prevention," "treatment," and "health promotion." In contrast to earlier times, "barrier," "caregiver," "school setting," and "QOL" have recently emerged as core keywords. CONCLUSIONS Over the past 30 years, child and adolescent health literacy has been importantly addressed in both clinical and public health approaches. The results of the current study provide references for future research in child and adolescent health literacy. IMPLICATION FOR PRACTICE AND RESEARCH This study suggests the need for additional research on school-based practices that can improve health literacy and for identifying validated and reliable multidimensional health literacy assessment instruments.

Abstract
PURPOSE The study aims to determine the correlation between health literacy (HL) and mental health literacy (MHL) in Turkish society. DESIGN AND METHODS This study was a cross-sectional survey, a form of quantitative research. Data were collected from participants with the personal information form, Turkish Health Literacy Scale, and Mental Health Literacy Scale. FINDINGS The study found that 48.2% of the individuals had insufficient-limited HL and that 46.2% had a low level of MHL. A positive weak relationship was found between HL and MHL. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS As HL and MHL are correlated concepts, community health nurses can prepare their nursing action plans accordingly.

Abstract
Low socioeconomic populations, when compared to more affluent groups, are at greater risk of initiating risky behaviours and consequently developing health complications. Health literacy has been identified as a possible means to improve and sustain positive health behaviours, with adolescence being a time point when such behaviours can be embedded. To develop a meaningful health intervention, it has been recommended that relevant stakeholders be included in the design phase. This formative evaluation study was the second phase of co-design of an engaging health literacy intervention 'LifeLab' with, and for, socioeconomically disadvantaged adolescents in Ireland. In Spring 2021, a series of co-design workshops (n = 17) were facilitated with a convenience sample of adolescents from socially disadvantaged areas (n = 22) to gather their perceptions, feedback, and suggested changes on the LifeLab learning activities that had emerged from Phase 1 of the work. The data was analysed using reflexive thematic analysis, resulting in the development of three themes: (i) preferred learning engagement strategies, (ii) practical and logistical considerations and (iii) ideas for LifeLab content. The results highlight the value in adopting a participatory approach, as participants offered an array of suggestions and details to maximise the potential for LifeLab to be contextually relevant and engaging; suggestions which will directly inform the development and implementation of the intervention.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze the psychometric properties of the Portuguese Brazilian version of the instrument for measuring health literacy European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire short form (HLS-EU-Q16). The study sample consisted of 783 Brazilian adults with a mean age of 38.6 years. The data were analyzed through an extensive and robust process of testing the properties with the combination of exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and item response theory (IRT) techniques, aiming to search for strong validation evidence in the internal structure and stability step for other sub-samples. The instrument's reliability was tested using Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's Omega. The analyses indicated the existence of only one dimension and good reliability values. The model tested with cross-validation indicated satisfactory, adequate, consistent and stable levels for EFA, IRT via item discrimination and CFA, both for primary indicators as factor loadings, communalities, item discrimination as well as for the model adequacy indicators. It is concluded that the Brazilian Portuguese version of the HLS-EU-Q16 proved to be a one-dimensional, consistent, accurate and stable model for measuring health literacy in Brazilian adults.

Abstract
Childhood and adolescence are the periods in which children shape their character and behavior. This is also the period for children to adopt good health behaviors and to gain health knowledge- to gain health literacy (HL). Several factors play an important role in this. Among them are the person's characteristics, family and social environment, literacy in general, cultural influences, and technological advances. The present study reviews the recent scientific evidence on the role that the family structure plays in HL in children and adolescents. A literature search was performed, until July 2019, in PubMed and Scopus. Appropriate keywords, related to HL and family structure, were used. Titles and abstracts were screened independently, and full-text manuscripts meeting inclusion criteria were extracted. Ten studies were included in this literature review. Several aspects of family structure (e.g., marital status, members of family, parental educational level, etc.) seemed to play a positive role in children's HL status in the sense that children improve their HL when raised in families whose members have better HL. Although there is good evidence that HL positively affects children's and adolescents' health behavior, the role of family structure in children's HL has not been well studied and understood.

Abstract
Background Older persons are one of the most vulnerable groups as regards low health literacy. However, little is known about the extent of limitations and multi-faceted nature of their health literacy, such as its characteristics and social and geographical dimensions. Additionally, most existing studies have predominantly treated health literacy as a risk factor of health and wellbeing of older persons as opposed to an outcome that must be pursued. Objectives This study investigated the moderating role of weak social ties (bridging social capital) in the relationship between health behaviors, such as smoking, alcohol intake, voluntary body check-up and physical exercise, and health literacy among older persons in rural and urban Ghana. Methods Data was drawn from a cross-sectional survey comprising 522 respondents across five administrative regions in Ghana. Ordinary Least Squares regression technique was used to analyse the data. Results Older persons in urban areas had higher health literacy [Mean/Standard deviation (SD) = 9.1/4.1 vs. 10.1/4.2] as well as higher bridging social capital (Mean/SD = 2.0/1.2 vs. 1.6/0.9) than their rural counterparts. Bridging social capital was negatively associated with the health literacy of urban residents (B = -0.997, p < 0.01). We found evidence that smoking (B = -0.787, p < 0.05) and undertaking physical activities (B = 0.812, p < 0.01) were associated with health literacy of older persons in rural areas. Having voluntary body check-ups (B = 0.155, p < 0.01) was associated with health literacy in urban areas. Bridging social capital negatively moderated the association of smoking with health literacy in rural areas (B = -5.032, p < 0.01), but it instead positively modified the relationship between alcohol intake and health literacy in urban areas (B = 0.185, p < 0.05). Conclusion For policymakers and practitioners aiming to promote older persons' health literacy as a public health asset at individual and community levels, an important starting point to achieving such goals is to understand the fundamental indicators (e.g., health behaviors) and the role that social and geographical factors play in shaping their health literacy.

Abstract
Health literacy (HL), which is a determinant of individuals’ health as well as a personal and public asset, can be improved by community healthcare providers (CHPs) with the capability of providing HL services. The purpose of this study was to explore CHPs’ familiarity with and attitudes toward HL and their confidence in implementing HL practices. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted involving a total of 104 CHPs from 20 public health centers in Taiwan. It was based on a structured questionnaire involving self-evaluation by participants. The scores for familiarity, attitudes, and confidence in implementing HL practices were mean = 4.36, SD = 1.99; mean = 7.45, SD = 1.93; and mean = 6.10, SD = 1.77 (out of 10 points), respectively. The results of the multiple regression analysis showed that the two independent variables of familiarity and attitude could predict confidence in implementing HL practices (R2 = 0.57, F(2101) = 58.96, p < 0.001). The CHPs surveyed were not especially familiar with HL; thus, they recognized its importance, but they lacked confidence in implementing HL practices. Increasing practitioners’ familiarity with HL may therefore boost their confidence in implementation. The research results can serve as a reference when planning HL education and training.

Abstract
Health literacy is a key determinant of the public health and health climate of the nation. This study examined the functional health literacy of the nation, factors associated with health literacy, and its relationship with diabetes recognition. This cross-sectional survey recruited participants (N = 2895) who were 18 years and above from a population registry through disproportionate stratified sampling. The Brief Health Literacy Screen and other questionnaires were administered through face-to-face interviews, in one of the four national languages (English, Chinese, Malay or Tamil). The majority (80.5%) had adequate functional health literacy and were able to recognise symptoms of diabetes correctly (83.5% overall; 83.7% and 82.2% in those with adequate and inadequate health literacy, respectively). Those with inadequate health literacy had a higher incidence of chronic conditions (p < 0.001) compared to those with adequate health literacy in bivariate analysis. The majority of the sample had sufficient levels of physical activity (83.3%), and more than half reported an unhealthy lifestyle (57.4%). Older age, Chinese ethnicity, those who were employed, with lower education (secondary or below), and were married had significantly higher odds of inadequate health literacy. Health literacy was not associated with lifestyle, physical activity, chronic conditions and diabetes recognition. Health literacy interventions should focus on the disadvantaged social groups for improving their health literacy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health literacy enables a person to make good decisions regarding health care, disease prevention, and health promotion to maintain and improve health. Although health literacy research in China has gained increasing attention in recent years, most existing studies focus on adults rather than adolescents. In addition, little theory-driven empirical research has been conducted to fully understand the relationship among health literacy, its influencing factors, and health outcomes scored on a skills-based health literacy instrument. OBJECTIVE This study applied Manganello's framework to investigate how health literacy was related to its antecedents and health status in secondary students in Beijing, China. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted with 650 students in Years 7 to 9 (age 11-17 years) from four secondary schools. Students completed a self-administered questionnaire based on Manganello's health literacy framework, which measured key upstream determinants, including health literacy and self-report health status. Health literacy was measured on an 8-item skills-based instrument that assesses a person's ability to find, understand, appraise, and communicate health information in everyday life (scores range from 0-37). Descriptive statistics and path analysis were conducted to investigate the mediating role of health literacy in predicting health status. KEY RESULTS Overall, the average scores of students' health literacy was 26.37 (±5.89). Manganello's framework was supported by the data collected (χ2/df = 2.049, p = .001, comparative fix index = 0.966, root mean square error of approximation = 0.041). Personal self-efficacy (r = 0.11, p = .007), social support (r = 0.18, p < .001), and school environment (r = 0.27, p < .001) predicted health literacy, which in turn predicted students' health status (r = 0.12, p = .005). CONCLUSIONS Adolescent health literacy is not only a person's capability to protect health, but also an interactive outcome with the broader environment. Promoting health literacy could be a useful strategy to improve health status for adolescents; however, a holistic approach is needed to increase students' self-efficacy, promote social support, and create positive school environments to achieve optimal health literacy and health outcomes. Abstract
BACKGROUND Health literacy is a dynamic construct that is content and context specific. An understanding of the facilitators and barriers involved in the development of health literacy over time can provide important insights for the health care providers (HCP) in supporting patients with chronic illness. OBJECTIVE The study was conducted to expand an understanding of how health literacy development can be supported through exploration of the main facilitators and barriers in the process. METHODS This study used a longitudinal qualitative study design involving repeat interviews at three separate time points over a 12-month period. A purposive sample of 26 participants attending a structured cardiovascular disease risk-reduction program participated in the study, 17 of whom completed all three interviews. The European Health Literacy Survey measure was used to determine health literacy levels at the beginning and end of the 12-month period. Employing qualitative thematic analysis and a longitudinal-specific question framework, a trajectory approach was applied to explore individual cases longitudinally. KEY RESULTS Facilitators and barriers to health literacy capacity development were identified. Participants demonstrated increased perceptions of having control and being empowered over time. However, this was also found to be affected by external life events. Study participants were also found to be embedding health knowledge, motivation, and behaviors over time within the everyday contexts of their lives. The relationship with the HCP permeated all aspects of health literacy capacity development, including aspects of treatment decision-making. Participants identified the need for psychological supports and the increased importance of looking after their mental health. CONCLUSIONS Positive developments in health literacy capacities are important for the self-management of illness. Longitudinal findings underscore the importance of the HCP in supporting the development of health literacy capacities over time. These findings lend support to the need to integrate health literacy into medical and other HCP curricula to raise awareness of the concept of health literacy. Abstract
Health literacy has gained popularity as a useful concept to promote and protect health. Even though health literacy research has been prolific it has also been fragmented, facing challenges in achieving its empowerment and social justice-related aims. Crucial limitations make the application of its principles to the health of vulnerable and underrepresented groups problematic, even though these groups are disproportionately affected by ill health. Efforts to refine and make the concept more relevant have tended to expand health literacy models and situate health literacy 'in context' to reflect environmental and social factors shaping health literacy. Context-related factors however, have not been consistently embedded in operationalisation and measurement efforts.This paper argues for health literacy to be re-conceptualised through a capabilities approach lens. It proposes that the capabilities approach can uniquely address the conceptual and methodological criticisms applied to health literacy, whilst encompassing its critical conceptual understandings of health. The advantage of this approach over and above other developments in health literacy theory and practice is its focus on both people's opportunities or freedoms to achieve desired health-related aims, and their ability to do so. It enables shifting the focus away from health literacy as individual skills and competencies and towards the enabling or inhibiting factors shaping health literacy. A participatory approach is seen as essential for realising this conceptual shift.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyse the profile of the persons and associations that participated in the course, quantify peer education activities and analyse their evolution. METHOD A quantitative study using an analysis of the course records from 2009 to 2018 was designed for this purpose inside mihsalud program designed to promote health amongst persons in vulnerable situations in the city of Valencia (Spain). It offers a yearly training-action course of community health workers (CHW) that is attended by persons who have been proposed by associations. The associations were defined according to their population (immigrant, local or intercultural) and the CHWs according to gender, country of birth, year of course, association and continuity after training. Means and confidence intervals were calculated at 95% and a bivariate analysis was conducted in order to compare the activities that took place in 2009 to 2013 with those of 2014 to 2018. The time trends were analysed by applying linear regression models that included the different years studied as the dependent variable. RESULTS 201 CHW of 31 nationalities were trained, 81.6% (95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 75.5-86.7] were women. Eighty-two associations participated, 51.2% (95% CI: 39.9-62.4] worked with culturally diverse populations. Participation by associations (p=.017) and CHWs (p=.377) increased in a statistically significant manner over the years. After the course, 35.3% (95% CI: 28.7-42.4] of the CHWs continued to collaborate voluntarily in the associations. CONCLUSIONS The results of the CHW training-action course improve over time given that a significant increase in participation by associations and women can be seen, along with a greater number of activities completed during the training. One effect of this is that CHWs are contracted or carry out voluntary activities in the associations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Compared with New Zealand Europeans, Pacific peoples in New Zealand develop type 2 diabetes at a higher rate and a younger age, and have 3.8 times higher incidence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). OBJECTIVE To investigate contextual factors that shape understandings of disease for Pacific peoples with diabetes and ESRD. METHODS Focussed ethnography. In-depth interviews were conducted with 16 Pacific people on haemodialysis for diabetic ESRD, in Auckland, New Zealand. Study participants aged between 30 and 69 years old were of Samoan, Cook Islander, Tongan, Niuean or Tokelauan ethnicity. Thematic analysis was used to code and identify themes. RESULTS Participants were embedded in a multigenerational legacy of diabetes. The limited diabetes-related education of earlier generations influenced how future generations behaved and understood diabetes. Perceptions were compounded by additional factors including the invisibility of early-stage diabetes; misunderstandings of health risks during communication with health providers; and misunderstandings of multiple conditions' symptoms and management. Participants had limited engagement with health services until their diagnosis of ESRD acted as a trigger to change this behaviour. However, this trigger was not effective in itself-rather, it was in combination with relevant education delivered in a way that made sense to participants, given their current understandings. CONCLUSIONS Illness representations drive choices and behaviours with respect to self-management of diabetes and engagement with health services. Diabetes is often present in multiple generations of Pacific people; therefore, illness representations are developed and shared within a family. Changing illness representations requires engagement with the individual within a family context.
