Abstract
Blueberries with high anthocyanin content undergo various postharvest qualitative losses. In this work, eco-friendly coatings were developed for maintaining postharvest blueberry quality using lipopeptides (LPs), gelatin, and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. The addition of LPs decreased the surface tension of coating film and thus exhibited lower water contact angle (95.53 ± 0.94°) than unmodified one (112.33 ± 0.73°). We demonstrated that LPs-modified coating not only extended the shelf life of blueberries by 12.5 % but also resulted in a reduction of 3.83 lg CFU/g in moulds and yeasts count compared to uncoated one. Furthermore, blueberries with higher anthocyanin content (75.75 mg 100 g-1) were recognized in LPs-modified coating treatment, which was further validated in anthocyanin biosynthesis genes expression through RT-qPCR. Our results demonstrate the effect of LPs-modified coating treatment on postharvest blueberry quality and anthocyanin biosynthesis genes expression. This work provides a promising strategy to produce biobased antimicrobial packaging system.

Abstract
Antioxidants are organic molecules that scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS), thereby maintaining cellular redox balance in living organisms. The human body synthesizes endogenous antioxidants, whereas humans obtain exogenous antioxidants from other organisms such as plants, animals, fungi, and bacteria. This review primarily focuses on the antioxidant potential of natural metabolites and extracts from five major bacterial phyla, including the well-studied Actinobacteria and Cyanobacteria, as well as less-studied Bacteroides, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria. The literature survey revealed that the metabolites and the extracts with antioxidant activity can be obtained from bacterial cells and their culture supernatants. The metabolites with antioxidant activity include pigments, phycobiliproteins, polysaccharides, mycosporins-like amino acids, peptides, phenolic compounds, and alkaloids. Both metabolites and extracts demonstrate in vitro antioxidant capacity through radical-scavenging, metal-reducing, and metal-chelating activity assays. In in vivo models, they can scavenge ROS and RNS directly and/or indirectly eliminate them by enhancing the activities of antioxidant enzymes, such as catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase. Due to their antioxidant activities, they may find applications in the cosmetic industry as anti-aging agents for the skin and in medicine as drugs or supplements for combating oxidative stress-related disorders, such as neurodegenerative diseases and diabetes. The literature survey also elucidated that some metabolites and extracts with antioxidant activity also exhibited strong antimicrobial properties. Therefore, we consider that they may have future applications in the treatment of infectious diseases, the preparation of pathogen-free healthy foods, and the extension of food shelf life.

Abstract
Biosurfactants, amphiphilic metabolites produced by bacteria and yeasts, fulfill a variety of functions in microbial life. They exhibit a well-recognized multifunctionality, spanning from the reduction in surface tension to specific biological activities, including antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer effects. These compounds have the potential to serve as environmentally friendly alternatives to synthetic surfactants in industrial formulations, where they could act as emulsifiers and wetting agents. The exploitation of their full potentiality could be a significant added value. Biosurfactants are often cited as effective antioxidants. However, experimental evidence for their antioxidant activity/capacity is sparse. To shed light on the subject, in this review we collect and critically examine all the available literature data for each of the major classes of microbial biosurfactants: rhamnolipids, mannosylerythritol lipids, sophorolipids, and lipopeptides. Despite the variability arising from the diverse composition and polydispersity of the samples analyzed, along with the variety of testing methodologies, the findings consistently indicate a moderate-to-strong antioxidant capacity. Several hypotheses are advanced about the molecular mechanisms behind this action; however, further studies are needed to gain a molecular understanding. This knowledge would fully define the biological roles of biosurfactants and is a prerequisite for the development of innovative formulations based on the valorization of their antioxidant properties.

Abstract
The growing demand for efficient biosurfactants in various industrial sectors has driven the search for sustainable alternatives, enhanced production methods, and low-cost substrates. This study aimed to optimize the production, characterize, and assess the bioactivities of biosurfactants produced by an oligotrophic PET plastic-associated Bacillus sp. EIKU23. The bacterium yielded the highest amount of biosurfactant after 6 days of incubation in Luria broth medium (pH 7.0) at 30 °C without any additives. FTIR and NMR analyses confirmed the lipopeptide nature of the biosurfactant, which exhibited a negative charge. The biosurfactant remained stable at 4 °C-80 °C and pH 7.0-8.0 for at least 7 days. It exhibited antioxidant properties comparable to the ascorbic acid standard, with efficacy ranging from 23.61% to 89.96% in different antioxidant assays. It showed antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative potential pathogens. The biosurfactant induced substantial DNA leakage at a concentration of 10 mg/mL and eradicated approximately 48.4% of pre-formed Staphylococcus aureus biofilm and showed anti-attachment behaviour to a polystyrene surface. Additionally, the biosurfactant precipitated up to 98.7% uranium from an aqueous solution, demonstrating its potential for bioremediation. These findings suggest that the biosurfactant produced by Bacillus sp. EIKU23 is multifunctional with promising applications in bioremediation, antibacterial activity, antibiofilm formation, and antioxidant defense, offering a novel solution for sustainable industrial practices and plastic waste management.

Abstract
Biosurfactants/bioemulsifiers (BSs/BEs) can be defined as surface-active biomolecules produced by microorganisms with a broad range of applications. In recent years, due to their unique properties like biodegradability, specificity, low toxicity, and relative ease of preparation, these biomolecules have attracted wide interest as an eco-friendly alternative for several industrial sectors, escalating global microbial BS/BE market growth. Recently, Gordonia alkanivorans strain 1B, a bacterium with significant biotechnological potential, well known for its biodesulfurizing properties, carotenoid production, and broad catabolic range, was described as a BS/BE producer. This study focuses on the characterization of the properties of the lipoglycopeptide BSs/BEs produced by strain 1B, henceforth referred to as gordofactin, to better understand its potential and future applications. Strain 1B was cultivated in a chemostat using fructose as a carbon source to stimulate gordofactin production, and different purification methods were tested. The most purified sample, designated as extracted gordofactin, after lyophilization, presented a specific emulsifying activity of 9.5 U/mg and a critical micelle concentration of 13.5 mg/L. FT-IR analysis revealed the presence of basic hydroxyl, carboxyl, ether, amine/amide functional groups, and alkyl aliphatic chains, which is consistent with its lipoglycopeptide nature (60% lipids, 19.6% carbohydrates, and 9% proteins). Gordofactin displayed remarkable stability and retained emulsifying activity across a broad range of temperatures (30 °C to 80 °C) and pH (pH 3-12). Moreover, a significant tolerance of gordofactin emulsifying activity (EA) to a wide range of NaCl concentrations (1 to 100 g/L) was demonstrated. Although with a great loss of EA in the presence of NaCl concentrations above 2.5%, gordofactin could still tolerate up to 100 g/L NaCl, maintaining about 16% of its initial EA for up to 7 days. Furthermore, gordofactin exhibited growth inhibition against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and it demonstrated concentration-dependent free radical scavenging activity for 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (IC50 ≈ 1471 mg/L). These promising features emphasize the robustness and potential of gordofactin as an eco-friendly BS/BE alternative to conventional surfactants/emulsifiers for different industrial applications.

Abstract
Surfactants, also known as surface-active agents, have emerged as an important class of compounds with a wide range of applications. However, the use of chemical-derived surfactants must be restricted due to their potential adverse impact on the ecosystem and the health of human and other living organisms. In the past few years, there has been a growing inclination towards natural-derived alternatives, particularly microbial surfactants, as substitutes for synthetic or chemical-based counterparts. Microbial biosurfactants are abundantly found in bacterial species, predominantly Bacillus spp. and Pseudomonas spp. The chemical structures of biosurfactants involve the complexation of lipids with carbohydrates (glycolipoproteins and glycolipids), peptides (lipopeptides), and phosphates (phospholipids). Lipopeptides, in particular, have been the subject of extensive research due to their versatile properties, including emulsifying, antimicrobial, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory properties. This review provides an update on research progress in the classification of surfactants. Furthermore, it explores various bacterial biosurfactants and their functionalities, along with their advantages over synthetic surfactants. Finally, the potential applications of these biosurfactants in many industries and insights into future research directions are discussed.

Abstract
The present work aims to quantitatively and qualitatively monitor the production of lipopeptide mixtures by Bacillus methylotrophicus DCS1 strain in Landy medium and to investigate the antifungal activities of DCS1 strain and its produced lipopeptides. The in vitro activities were tested by the direct confrontation and agar well diffusion methods, while the in vivo study was carried out in order to test the efficiency of DCS1 bacterial suspension in the control of Fusarium wilt in tomato plants. Identification of lipopeptides by mass spectrometry (LC/MSD-TOF) showed that lipopeptide isoforms produced during the first 24 h and 48 h of fermentation are identical, belonging to bacillomycin D and fengycins A and B homologues with a difference in the yield of production. After 72 h of fermentation corresponding to the end of incubation period, B. methylotrophicus DCS1 is able to produce a mixture of surfactin, pumilacidin, iturin A/mycosubtilin, iturin C1, bacillomycin D and fengycins A and B isoforms. The results of in vitro antifungal experiments suggest that B. methylotrophicus DCS1 has a significant potential as a biocontrol agent, owing to lipopeptides produced, endowed with antifungal activity against several phytopathogenic fungi. The curative treatment of tomato plants with DCS1 bacterial suspension was more effective in the protection against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-lycopersici (FORL) than the preventive treatment by comparing the average number of leaves remaining healthy after 30 days of each treatment and the appearance of tomato plants roots. The results indicate that B. methylotrophicus DCS1 exhibit a significant suppression of Fusarium wilt symptoms in tomato plants comparable to that of commercial fungicides and could be an alternative to chemically synthesized pesticides.

Abstract
Biosurfactants are naturally occurring, surface-active chemicals generated by microorganisms and have attracted interest recently because of their numerous industrial uses. Compared to their chemical equivalents, they exhibit qualities that include lower toxic levels, increased biodegradable properties, and unique physiochemical properties. Due to these traits, biosurfactants have become attractive substitutes for synthetic surfactants in the pharmaceutical industry. In-depth research has been done in the last few decades, demonstrating their vast use in various industries. This review article includes a thorough description of the various types of biosurfactants and their production processes. The production process discussed here is from oil-contaminated waste, agro-industrial waste, dairy, and sugar industry waste, and also how biosurfactants can be produced from animal fat. Various purification methods such as ultrafiltration, liquid-liquid extraction, acid precipitation, foam fraction, and adsorption are required to acquire a purified product, which is necessary in the pharmaceutical industry, are also discussed here. Alternative ways for large-scale production of biosurfactants using different statistical experimental designs such as CCD, ANN, and RSM are described here. Several uses of biosurfactants, including drug delivery systems, antibacterial and antifungal agents, wound healing, and cancer therapy, are discussed. Additionally, in this review, the future challenges and aspects of biosurfactant utilization in the pharmaceutical industry and how to overcome them are also discussed.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Man has used honey to treat diseases since ancient times, perhaps even before the history of medicine itself. Several civilizations have utilized natural honey as a functional and therapeutic food to ward off infections. Recently, researchers worldwide have been focusing on the antibacterial effects of natural honey against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. AIM OF THE STUDY This review aims to summarize research on the use of honey properties and constituents with their anti-bacterial, anti-biofilm, and anti-quorum sensing mechanisms of action. Further, honey's bacterial products, including probiotic organisms and antibacterial agents which are produced to curb the growth of other competitor microorganisms is addressed. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this review, we have provided a comprehensive overview of the antibacterial, anti-biofilm, and anti-quorum sensing activities of honey and their mechanisms of action. Furthermore, the review addressed the effects of antibacterial agents of honey from bacterial origin. Relevant information on the antibacterial activity of honey was obtained from scientific online databases such as Web of Science, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and PubMed. RESULTS Honey's antibacterial, anti-biofilm, and anti-quorum sensing activities are mostly attributed to four key components: hydrogen peroxide, methylglyoxal, bee defensin-1, and phenolic compounds. The performance of bacteria can be altered by honey components, which impact their cell cycle and cell morphology. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review that specifically summarizes every phenolic compound identified in honey along with their potential antibacterial mechanisms of action. Furthermore, certain strains of beneficial lactic acid bacteria such as Bifidobacterium, Fructobacillus, and Lactobacillaceae, as well as Bacillus species can survive and even grow in honey, making it a potential delivery system for these agents. CONCLUSION Honey could be regarded as one of the best complementary and alternative medicines. The data presented in this review will enhance our knowledge of some of honey's therapeutic properties as well as its antibacterial activities.

Abstract
A group of biosurfactants are lipopeptides that are produced by some microorganisms, especially Bacillus strains. They are new bioactive agents with anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral activities. Also, they are used in sanitation industries. In this study, a lead-resistant strain of Bacillus halotolerans was isolated for lipopeptide production. This isolate exhibited metal resistance (lead, calcium, chromium, nickel, copper, manganese, and mercury), salt tolerance (12%), and antimicrobial activities against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The production of lipopeptide was optimized, concentrated, and then extracted from the polyacrylamide gel in a simple way for the first time. The nature of the purified lipopeptide was determined by FTIR, GC/MS, and HPLC analyses. The purified lipopeptide indicated significant antioxidant properties (90.38% at a concentration of 0.8 mg ml-1). Also, it had anticancer activity by apoptosis (flow cytometry analysis) in MCF-7 cells, while it had no cytotoxicity on HEK-293 normal cells. Therefore, Bacillus halotolerans lipopeptide has the potential to be used as an antioxidant, antimicrobial, or anticancer agent in the medical and food industries.

Abstract
Lipopeptides are surface active, natural products of bacteria, fungi and green-blue algae origin, having diverse structures and functionalities. In analogy, a number of chemical synthesis techniques generated new designer lipopeptides with desirable features and functions. Lipopetides are self-assembly guided, supramolecular compounds which have the capacity of high-density presentation of the functional epitopes at the surface of the nanostructures. This feature contributes to their successful application in several industry sectors, including food, feed, personal care, and pharmaceutics. In this comprehensive review, the novel class of ribosomally synthesized lipopeptides is introduced alongside the more commonly occuring non-ribosomal lipopeptides. We highlight key representatives of the most researched as well as recently described lipopeptide families, with emphasis on structural features, self-assembly and associated functions. The common biological, chemical and hybrid production routes of lipopeptides, including prominent analogues and derivatives are also discussed. Furthermore, genetic engineering strategies aimed at increasing lipopeptide yields, diversity and biological activity are summarized and exemplified. With respect to application, this work mainly details the potential of lipopeptides in personal care and cosmetics industry as cleansing agents, moisturizer, anti-aging/anti-wrinkling, skin whitening and preservative agents as well as the pharmaceutical industry as anitimicrobial agents, vaccines, immunotherapy, and cancer drugs. Given that this review addresses human applications, we conclude on the topic of safety of lipopeptide formulations and their sustainable production.

Abstract
The widespread use of synthetic pesticides has resulted in a number of issues, including a rise in insecticide-resistant organisms, environmental degradation, and a hazard to human health. As a result, new microbial derived insecticides that are safe for human health and the environment are urgently needed. In this study, rhamnolipid biosurfactants produced from Enterobacter cloacae SJ2 was used to evaluate the toxicity towards mosquito larvae (Culex quinquefasciatus) and termites (Odontotermes obesus). Results showed dose dependent mortality rate was observed between the treatments. The 48 h LC50 (median lethal concentration) values of the biosurfactant were determined for termite and mosquito larvae following the non-linear regression curve fit method. Results showed larvicidal activity and anti-termite activity of biosurfactants with 48 h LC50 value (95% confidence interval) of 26.49 mg/L (25.40 to 27.57) and 33.43 mg/L (31.09 to 35.68), respectively. According to a histopathological investigation, the biosurfactant treatment caused substantial tissue damage in cellular organelles of larvae and termites. The findings of this study suggest that the microbial biosurfactant produced by E. cloacae SJ2 is an excellent and potentially effective agent for controlling Cx. quinquefasciatus and O. obesus.

Abstract
The present work aimed to develop rapid approach monitoring using a simple selective method based on a positive hemolysis test, oil spreading activity and emulsification index determinations. It is the first to describe production of biosurfactants (BS) by the endophytic Pantoea alhagi species. Results indicated that the new BS evidenced an E24 emulsification index of 82%. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) results mentioned that the described BS belong to the glycolipid family. Fatty acid profiles showed the predominance of methyl 2-hyroxydodecanoate in the cell membrane (67.00%) and methyl 14-methylhexadecanoate (12.05%). The major fatty acid in the BS was oleic acid (76.26%), followed by methyl 12-methyltetradecanoate (10.93%). Markedly, the BS produced by the Pantoea alhagi species exhibited antimicrobial and anti-biofilm activities against tested human pathogens. With superior antibacterial activity against Escherchia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, a high antifungal effect was given against Fusarium sp. with a diameter of zone of inhibition of 29.5 mm, 36 mm and 31 mm, obtained by BS dissolved in methanol extract. The DPPH assay indicated that the BS (2 mg/mL) showed a higher antioxidant activity (78.07 inhibition percentage). The new BS exhibited specific characteristics, encouraging their use in various industrial applications.

Abstract
The toxicity of metal nanoparticles has introduced promising research in the current scenario since an enormous number of people have been potentially facing this problem in the world. The extensive attention on green nanoparticle synthesis has been focussed on as a vital step in bio-nanotechnology to improve biocompatibility, biodegradability, eco-friendliness, and huge potential utilization in various environmental and clinical assessments. Inherent influence on the study of green nanoparticles plays a key role to synthesize the controlled and surface-influenced molecule by altering the physical, chemical, and biological assets with the provision of various precursors, templating/co-templating agents, and supporting solvents. However, in this article, the dominant characteristics of several kinds of lipopeptide biosurfactants are discussed to execute a critical study of factors affecting synthesis procedure and applications. The recent approaches of metal, metal oxide, and composite nanomaterial synthesis have been deliberated as well as the elucidation of the reaction mechanism. Furthermore, this approach shows remarkable boosts in the production of nanoparticles with the very less employed harsh and hazardous processes as compared to chemical or physical method-based nanoparticle synthesis. This study also shows that the advances in strain selection for green nanoparticle production could be a worthwhile and strong economical approach in futuristic medical science research.

Abstract
This study investigated the antiradical and antioxidant potential of the three families of lipopeptides (i.e., surfactin, mycosubtilin, and plipastatin/fengycin) produced by Bacillus subtilis strains. The antiradical/antioxidant activities of highly purified lipopeptides were studied in acellular models using a 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, superoxide anion (O 2 . - ), hydrogen peroxide, (H2O2) and hydroxyl radical (HO.). At a lipopeptide concentration of 500 mg.L-1, the maximum inhibition of DPPH reached 22.88% (obtained for plipastatin). Moreover, the scavenging effects ofO 2 . - , H2O2, and HO. at the highest concentration tested (250 mg.L-1) were found to be 6, 21, and 3% for surfactin, 19, 9, and 15% for mycosubtilin, 21, 18, and 59% for plipastatin, 21, 31, and 61% for the mixture of surfactin/plipastatin, and 13, 16, and 15% for the mixture of surfactin/mycosubtilin, respectively. These results showed that plipastatin was the best candidate due to its antioxidant activities.

Abstract
The surface tension of aqueous solutions of Triton X-165 with rhamnolipid or surfactin mixtures was measured. The obtained results were applied for the determination of the concentration and composition of the Triton X-165 and biosurfactants mixture at the water-air interface as well as the contribution of the particular component of the mixtures to water surface tension reduction and the mutual influence of these components on the critical micelle concentration. The determination of these quantities was based on both the commonly used concepts and a new one proposed by us, which assumes that the composition of the mixed monolayer at the water-air interface depends directly on the pressure of the monolayer of the single mixture component and allows us to determine the surface concentration of each mixture component independently of surface tension isotherms shape. Taking into account the composition of the mixed monolayer at the water-air interface, the standard Gibbs adsorption free energy was considered. The obtained results allow us to state that the concentration of both mixture components corresponding to their saturated monolayer and the surface tension of their aqueous solution can be predicted using the surfactants' single monolayer pressure and their mole fraction in the mixed monolayer determined in the proposed way.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the in vitro antioxidant potential of Bacillus coagulans T242. B. coagulans T242 showed better antioxidant activities, including the 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) free radical scavenging ability, lipid peroxidation inhibiting ability and reducing ability, than those exerted by Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG). B. coagulans T242 positively regulated the expression of the nuclear factor erythroid 2-relatedfactor 2/Kelch-like ECH-associated protein-1 (Nrf2/Keap1) pathway-related proteins (Nrf2, Keap1, heine oxygenase-1 (HO-1)); increased antioxidant enzymes (glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD)); reduced the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) level; decreased the expression of inflammatory-related cytokines interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α); and thus increased the survival rate in 2,2'-azobis (2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride (AAPH)-damaged HT-29 cells. This study proved that B. coagulans T242 exerted antioxidative effects by quenching oxygen free radicals and activating the Nrf2 signaling pathway in HT-29 cells.

Abstract
Biosurfactants are a functionally and structurally heterogeneous group of biomolecules produced by multiple filamentous fungi, yeast, and bacteria, and characterized by their distinct surface and emulsifying ability. The genus Bacillus is well studied for biosurfactant production as it produces various types of lipopeptides, for example, lichenysins, bacillomycin, fengycins, and surfactins. Bacillus lipopeptides possess a broad spectrum of biological activities such as antimicrobial, antitumor, immunosuppressant, and antidiabetic, in addition to their use in skincare. Moreover, Bacillus lipopeptides are also involved in various food products to increase the antimicrobial, surfactant, and emulsification impact. From the previously published articles, it can be concluded that biosurfactants have strong potential to be used in food, healthcare, and agriculture. In this review article, we discuss the versatile functions of lipopeptide Bacillus species with particular emphasis on the biological activities and their applications in food.

Abstract
Emerging evidence suggests a key role of gut microbiota in maintaining liver functions through modulating the gut–liver axis. In this study, we investigated whether microbiota alteration mediated by probiotic Bacillus was involved in alleviating oxidative stress- induced liver injury. Sprague–Dawley rats were orally administered Bacillus SC06 or SC08 for a 24-day period and thereafter intraperitoneally injected diquat (DQ) to induce oxidative stress. Results showed that Bacillus, particularly SC06 significantly inhibited hepatic injuries, as evidenced by the alleviated damaged liver structure, the decreased levels of ALT, AST, ALP and LDH, and the suppressed mitochondrial dysfunction. SC06 pretreatment markedly enhanced the liver antioxidant capacity by decreasing MDA and p47, and increasing T-AOC, SOD and HO-1.16S rRNA sequencing analysis revealed that DQ significantly changed the diversities and composition of gut microbiota, whereas Bacillus pretreatments could attenuate gut dysbiosis. Pearson’s correlation analysis showed that AST and MDA exerted a positive correlation with the opportunistic pathogenic genera and species (Escherichia and Shigella), and negatively correlated with the potential probiotics (Lactobacillus), while SOD exerted a reverse trend. The microbial metagenomic analysis demonstrated that Bacillus, particularly SC06 markedly suppress the metabolic pathways such as carbohydrate metabolism, lipid metabolism, amino acid metabolism and metabolism of cofactors and vitamins. Furthermore, SC06 decreased the gene abundance of the pathways mediating bacterial replication, secretion and pathogenicity. Taken together, Bacillus SC06 alleviates oxidative stress-induced liver injuries via optimizing the composition, metabolic pathways and pathogenic replication and secretion of gut microbiota. These findings elucidate the mechanisms of probiotics in alleviating oxidative stress and provide a promising strategy for preventing liver diseases by targeting gut microbiota.

Abstract
A biosurfactant producing bacterium was identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa DNM50 based on molecular characterization (NCBI accession no. MK351591). Structural characterization using MALDI-TOF revealed the presence of 12 different congeners of rhamnolipid such as Rha-C8-C8:1, Rha-C10-C8:1, Rha-C10-C10, Rha-C10-C12:1, Rha-C16:1, Rha-C16, Rha-C17:1, Rha-Rha-C10:1-C10:1, Rha-Rha-C10-C12, Rha-Rha-C10-C8, Rha-Rha-C10-C8:1, and Rha-Rha-C8-C8. The radical scavenging activity of rhamnolipid (DNM50RL) was determined by 2, 3-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay which showed an IC50 value of 101.8 μg/ ml. The cytotoxic activity was investigated against MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell line by MTT (4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay which showed a very low IC50 of 0.05 μg/ ml at 72 h of treatment. Further, its activity was confirmed by resazurin and trypan blue assay with IC50 values of 0.01 μg/ml and 0.64 μg/ ml at 72 h of treatment, respectively. Thus, the DNM50RL would play a vital role in the treatment of breast cancer targeting inhibition of p38MAPK.

Abstract
Lipopeptide biosurfactants (LBs) are biological molecules with low toxicity that have aroused growing interest in the pharmaceutical industry. Their chemical structure confers antimicrobial and antibiofilm properties against different species. Despite their potential, few studies have demonstrated their capability against Malassezia spp., commensal yeasts which can cause dermatitis and serious infections. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the antifungal activity of biosurfactants produced by new strains of Bacillus subtilis TIM10 and B. vallismortis TIM68 against M. furfur and their potential for removal and inhibition of yeast biofilms. Biosurfactants were classified as lipopeptides by FTIR, and their composition was characterized by ESI-Q-TOF/MS, showing ions for iturin, fengycin, and surfactin, with a greater abundance of surfactin. Through the broth microdilution method, both biosurfactants inhibited the growth of clinical M. furfur strains. Biosurfactant TIM10 showed greater capacity for growth inhibition, with no statistical difference compared to those obtained by the commercial antifungal fluconazole for M. furfur 153DR5 and 154DR8 strains. At minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC-2), TIM10 and TIM68 were able to inhibit biofilm formation, especially TIM10, with an inhibition rate of approximately 90%. In addition, both biosurfactants were able to remove pre-formed biofilm. Both biosurfactants showed no toxicity against murine fibroblasts, even at concentrations above MIC-2. Our results show the effectiveness of LBs in controlling the growth and biofilm formation of M. furfur clinical strains and highlight the potential of these agents to compose new formulations for the treatment of these fungi.

Abstract
In the current scenario of changing climatic conditions and the rising global population, there is an urgent need to explore novel, efficient, and economical natural products for the benefit of humankind. Biosurfactants are one of the latest explored microbial synthesized biomolecules that have been used in numerous fields, including agriculture, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food processing, and environment-cleaning industries, as a source of raw materials, for the lubrication, wetting, foaming, emulsions formulations, and as stabilizing dispersions. The amphiphilic nature of biosurfactants have shown to be a great advantage, distributing themselves into two immiscible surfaces by reducing the interfacial surface tension and increasing the solubility of hydrophobic compounds. Furthermore, their eco-friendly nature, low or even no toxic nature, durability at higher temperatures, and ability to withstand a wide range of pH fluctuations make microbial surfactants preferable compared to their chemical counterparts. Additionally, biosurfactants can obviate the oxidation flow by eliciting antioxidant properties, antimicrobial and anticancer activities, and drug delivery systems, further broadening their applicability in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Nowadays, biosurfactants have been broadly utilized to improve the soil quality by improving the concentration of trace elements and have either been mixed with pesticides or applied singly on the plant surfaces for plant disease management. In the present review, we summarize the latest research on microbial synthesized biosurfactant compounds, the limiting factors of biosurfactant production, their application in improving soil quality and plant disease management, and their use as antioxidant or antimicrobial compounds in the pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
Cyclic lipopeptides produced by Bacillus species exhibit interesting therapeutic potential. However, their clinical use remains limited due to their low stability, undesirable interactions with host macromolecules, and their potential toxicity to mammalian cells. The present work aims to develop suitable lipopeptide-loaded chitosan nanoparticles with improved biological properties and reduced toxicity. Surfactin and bacillomycin D lipopeptides produced by Bacillus amyloliquefaciens B84 strain were loaded onto chitosan nanoparticles by ionotropic gelation process. Nanoformulated lipopeptides exhibit an average size of 569 nm, a zeta potential range of 38.8 mV, and encapsulation efficiency (EE) of 85.58%. Treatment of Candida (C.) albicans cells with encapsulated lipopeptides induced anti-adhesive activity of 81.17% and decreased cell surface hydrophobicity (CSH) by 25.53% at 2000 µg/mL. Nanoformulated lipopeptides also induced antileishmanial activity against Leishmania (L.) major promastigote and amastigote forms at respective IC50 values of 14.37 µg/mL and 22.45 µg/mL. Nanoencapsulated lipopeptides exerted low cytotoxicity towards human erythrocytes and Raw 264.7 macrophage cell line with respective HC50 and LC50 values of 770 µg/mL and 234.56 µg/mL. Nanoencapsulated lipopeptides could be used as a potential delivery system of lipopeptides to improve their anti-adhesive effect against C. albicans cells colonizing medical devices and their anti-infectious activity against leishmania.

Abstract
Wetlands are ecosystems rich in biodiversity and their ecological importance is recognized worldwide. Sediment samples were subjected to physical-chemical analysis and organic carbon content varied from 3.0% to 4.8%, the clay between 32 and 40%, silt with 41% and 43%, sand coarse varied between 6 and 11% and fine sand between 7 and 16%. The nitrogen values varied from 0.25% to 0.48%, the pH from 5.4 to 7.5 and the humidity varied from 44 to 56%. The selected isolates were evaluated for enzymatic properties and 64% showed positive results for amylase, 16% for gelatinase, 37% for lipase, 91% for protease and 2.7% for inulinase. Six bacterial isolates were selected for the overlapping assay and Bacillus sp. sed 2.2 showed inhibitory activity against Corynebacterium fimi NCTC 7547, and the antimicrobial substance was partially purified. The characterization of the substance was carried and the substance was stable at 100° C for up to 10 minutes and sensitive to the enzymes papain and trypsin. This substance was active against some species of Listeria, including Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 7644. The microorganims obtained from sediment samples were important sources of bioactive compounds, including enzymes and peptides, being a source of bioactive compounds to be studied.

Abstract
Lipopeptides biosurfactants (BioS) are natural surface-active compounds produced by a variety of microorganisms. They have great interest in environmental, biomedical and agro-industrial fields. However their large-scale application and production is limited by the cost of culture media and the low yield of production. Therefore, the improvement of the production yields and the development of efficient and cost-effective bioprocess became of a great interest. In this aim, we applied the response surface method to optimize an economic BioS production by a newly isolated strain Bacillus mojavensis BI2 on date Juice called "Luegmi" as unique carbon and nitrogen source. Using a Box-Bhenken design, we studied the effect of three independent variables on lipopeptide production; Leugmi concentration, Na2HPO4 and incubation time. The results of this study showed that Leugmi concentration at 25%, Na2HPO4 at 0.1% and incubation time of 24 h were optimal conditions for BioS production, with a maximum Surface Tension (ST) decreasing capacity of 55% corresponding to 27 mN/m and an Oil Dispersing Activity (ODA) of 30 cm2 corresponding to a diameter of 6 cm. Preliminary characterization of the BioS produced on Luegmi by UV-Spectra and Thin Layer Chromatography showed its lipopeptide nature. Physic-chemical characterization of the produced lipopeptide on Leugmi showed its great surface activities and stabilities at different pH, temperature and salts concentration. The results of this study suggested that Leugmi, an agricultural byproducts can be used as a low-cost substrate to enhance the yield of lipopeptide BioS with great surface activities for potential environmental application.

Abstract
In this study, the chemical structure and bioactive properties of the EPS of Pediococcus acidilactici MT41-11 isolated from camel milk were investigated. Two polysaccharide fractions (EPS-1, EPS-2) with molecular weights about 69.0 kDa were obtained, which were purified using DEAE-Sepharose and Sephadex G-100 chromatography. Based on monosaccharide composition, FT-IR, and 1D, 2D NMR spectra, concluded that EPS-1 had a backbone composed of →2)-α-d-Manp-(1→, →3)-α-d-Manp-(1→ and with branches containing α-d-Manp-(1→, EPS-2 had a backbone composed of →6)-β-d-Glcp-(1→, and with branches containing →2)-α-l-Fucp-(1→, →3)-α-d-Glcp-(1→, →2)-α-d-Glcp-(1→, β-d-Glcp-(1→, and α-d-Glcp-(1→. Remarkably, in vitro assays showed that EPS possessed multiple bioactive properties, including stimulating Lactobacillus growth and a high DPPH free radical scavenging activity. Also, it has a good ability to anti-biofilms. Overall, the analysis of all data showed EPS from P. acidilactici MT41-11 can be used as anti-oxidant, anti-biofilm agent, and also as a potential candidate prebiotic for health food or medicine industry.

Abstract
Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are among the leading nosocomial infections in the world and have led to the extensive study of various strategies to prevent infection. However, despite an abundance of anti-infection materials having been studied over the last forty-five years, only a few types have come into clinical use, providing an insignificant reduction in CAUTIs. In recent decades, marine resources have emerged as an unexplored area of opportunity offering huge potential in discovering novel bioactive materials to combat human diseases. Some of these materials, such as antimicrobial compounds and biosurfactants synthesized by marine microorganisms, exhibit potent antimicrobial, antiadhesive and antibiofilm activity against a broad spectrum of uropathogens (including multidrug-resistant pathogens) that could be potentially used in urinary catheters to eradicate CAUTIs. This paper summarizes information on the most relevant materials that have been obtained from marine-derived microorganisms over the last decade and discusses their potential as new agents against CAUTIs, providing a prospective proposal for researchers.

Abstract
Bio-surfactants are a principal group of significant molecules obtained from the microbial sources expressed with distinctive characteristics like biodegradation of hydrocarbons and also have different biomedical properties. The present investigation aims to assess the biomedical properties of synthesized bio-surfactant, rhamnolipid from Pseudomonas aeruginosa (DKB1) under in vitro conditions. The candidate bacterium P. aeruginosa (DKB1) was isolated from oil-polluted fishing harbors of Kanyakumari coast. Initially, the bio-surfactant production by this candidate strain was confirmed by oil displacement assay, hemolytic assay, drop collapse assay and emulsification index. Further, the production of bio-surfactant was achieved through submerged fermentation process using Bushnell-Haas mineral salts medium supplemented with 2% olive oil. The yield of the bio-surfactant was attained as 2.4 g/l and confirmed as rhamnolipid through blue agar plate assay; further, the extracted rhamnolipid was purified and characterized through standard procedures. In stability studies, the rhamnolipid could withstand up to pH 12, temperature 100 °C and 15% of NaCl concentration. The biomedical application of rhamnolipid (30 μg ml-1) was determined by antibacterial, antioxidant and cytotoxic studies. It exhibited a maximum growth inhibition against Bacillus subtilis (26 mm) with the MIC value of 8 μg ml-1. In antioxidant test, rhamnolipid expressed significant (P < 0.0001) inhibition of total reducing power (44.11%), DPPH activity (61.60%), hydroxyl radical (83.30%) and nitric oxide (51.86%) scavenging ability at 100 μg ml-1with the respective IC50 values of 130.50, 77.18, 52.08 and 95.43 μg ml-1. The anticancer activity of the rhamnolipid was assessed with the help of MTT test against MCF-7, HT-29 and E-143 cancer cell lines individually, and the viability of the cells was observed, respectively, as 10.24, 17.66 and 13.50% at 250 μg ml-1concentration with the respective IC50 values of 140.2, 81.02 and 138.9 μg ml-1. From the results, it could be concluded that the rhamnolipid produced by P. aeruginosa (DKB1) isolated from oil-polluted area has effective biomedical properties.

Abstract
Kitchen waste oil (KWO) was evaluated as a substrate for production of biosurfactant by Wickerhamomyces anomalus CCMA 0358 and was tested against Aedes aegypti larvae, the mosquito causing neglected diseases, such as dengue fever, Zika, and Chikungunya, achieving 100 % mortality in the lowest concentration (6.25 %) evaluated in 24 h. Furthermore, possible applications of this compound were evaluated as antibacterial, antiadhesive, and antifungal. At a concentration of 50 %, the biosurfactant was found to inhibit the growth of Bacillus cereus, showing high inhibitions levels against Salmonella Enteritidis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. The antifungal activity was evaluated against Aspergillus, Cercospora, Colletotrichum, and Fusarium, obtaining results of up to 95 % inhibition. In addition to these promising results, the yeast W. anomalus produced the biosurfactant from an inexpensive substrate, which increases the possibility of its application in several industries owing to the low cost involved.

Abstract
Production of extracellular polysaccharides by halophilic Archaea and Bacteria has been widely reported and the members of the genus Halomonas have been identified as the most potential producers. In the present work, a novel exopolysaccharide (EPS-S6) produced by the extremely halotolerant newly isolated Halomonas elongata strain S6, was characterized. According to the HPAE-PAD results, EPS-S6 was mainly composed of glucosamine, mannose, rhamnose and glucose (1:0.9:0.7:0.3). EPS-S6 was highly negatively charged and its molecular weight was about 270 kDa. Studies on its functional properties showed that EPS-S6 had several potential features. It has noticeable antioxidant activities on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH•) inhibition and DNA protection, good ability to inhibit and to disrupt pathogenic biofilms, excellent flocculation of kaolin suspension and interesting emulsifying properties at acidic, neutral and basic pH. Therefore, EPS-S6 could have potential biotechnological concern in several fields such as in food, cosmetic and environmental industries.

Abstract
Biosurfactants are microbial surface-active compounds with antimicrobial and antioxidant activities that display a range of physiological functions. In this study, a strain isolated from a Cameroonian fermented milk "pendidam" and identified as Lactobacillus casei subsp. casei TM1B was used for biosurfactants production. The biosurfactants produced by L. casei TM1B with molasses as the substrate had a good surface (40.77 mN/m) and emulsifying (84.50%) activities. The scavenging of the ABTS+• radical (IC50 value of 0.60 ± 0.03 mg/mL) by the biosurfactants was found to be higher than that of DPPH• radical (IC50 value of 0.97 ± 0.13 mg/mL). The maximum chelating activity of biosurfactants (82.29%) was observed at 3.5 mg/mL. The biologically active compound of the biosurfactants produced by L. casei TM1B was identified as 2,5-O-methylrhamnofuranosyl-palmitate, a novel rhamnolipid-like biosurfactant by using chemical, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and NMR analysis. The biosurfactants were bactericidal against several Gram-negative and Gram-positive pathogens (minimum inhibitory concentration values ranged from 3.22 to 12.83 mg/mL), and scanning electron microscope analysis revealed bacterial cell walls and membranes as main targets.

Abstract
Weissella confusa has recently received attention for its probiotic potential. Some W. confusa and Weissella cibaria strains isolated from fermented foods show favorable probiotic effects. However, the probiotic properties of W. confusa isolated from giant panda remain unreported to date. Thus, this study isolated a W. confusa strain from giant panda feces and then investigated its characteristics and probiotic properties. A lactic acid bacteria strain was isolated from giant panda fecal samples. The isolated strain was screened by in vitro probiotic property tests, including in vitro antimicrobial test, antioxidant test, surface hydrophobicity, and stress resistance. On the basis of biochemical identification and 16S rDNA sequencing, the W. confusa strain was identified as BSP201703. This Weissella confusa strain can survive at pH 2 and 0.3% (w/v) concentration of bile salt environment and inhibit common intestinal pathogens. It also possesses an in vitro antioxidant capacity, a high auto-aggregation ability, and a high surface hydrophobicity. BSP201703 might serve as a probiotic to giant pandas.

Abstract
Microsporum canis is one of the most important dermatophyte causing tinea corporis and tinea capitis and its biofilm-form has a poor therapeutic response. The biosurfactant production by entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) has not been reported yet. The study aimed to investigate the potential usage of the EPF biosurfactant in the eradication of an ex vivo biofilm of Microsporum canis (M. canis) for the first time. An entomopathogenic fungus was isolated from the fungal-infected Vespa orientalis wasp and identified as Beauveria bassiana (MN173375). Chemical characterization revealed the lipopeptide nature of the B. bassiana biosurfactant (BBLP). Efficient antifungal and antibiofilm activities of BBLP against M. canis in vitro were detected. An ex vivo hair model was used to investigate the efficiency of BBLP against M. canis biofilm, in a scenario close to the in vivo conditions. M. canis ex vivo biofilm eradication was confirmed in stereo, scanning electron, and fluorescent images. Also, the ex vivo biofilm was less susceptible to BBLP treatment compared to its in vitro counterpart. In conclusion, BBLP showed significant eradication to the M. canis ex vivo biofilm and open horizons to use bio-resource derived from EPF in controlling microbial biofilm and holding great promise for combating recalcitrant dermatophytosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cellulosic biomass degradation still needs to be paid more attentions as bioenergy is the most likely to replace fossil energy in the future, and more evaluable cellulolytic bacteria isolation will lay a foundation for this filed. Qinling Mountains have unique biodiversity, acting as promising source of cellulose-degrading bacteria exhibiting noteworthy properties. Therefore, the aim of this work was to find potential cellulolytic bacteria and verify the possibility of the cloning of cellulases from the selected powerful bacteria. RESULTS In present study, 55 potential cellulolytic bacteria were screened and identified from the rotten wood of Qinling Mountains. Based on the investigation of cellulase activities and degradation effect on different cellulose substrates, Bacillus methylotrophicus 1EJ7, Bacillus subtilis 1AJ3 and Bacillus subtilis 3BJ4 were further applied to hydrolyze wheat straw, corn stover and switchgrass, and the results suggested that B. methylotrophicus 1EJ7 was the most preponderant bacterium, and which also indicated that Bacillus was the main cellulolytic bacteria in rotten wood. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction analysis of micromorphology and crystallinity of wheat straw also verified the significant hydrolyzation. With ascertaining the target sequence of cellulase β-glucosidase (243 aa) and endoglucanase (499 aa) were successfully heterogeneously cloned and expressed from B. methylotrophicus 1EJ7, and which performed a good effect on cellulose degradation with enzyme activity of 1670.15 ± 18.94 U/mL and 0.130 ± 0.002 U/mL, respectively. In addition, based on analysis of amino acid sequence, it found that β-glucosidase were belonged to GH16 family, and endoglucanase was composed of GH5 family catalytic domain and a carbohydrate-binding module of CBM3 family. CONCLUSIONS Based on the screening, identification and cellulose degradation effect evaluation of cellulolytic bacteria from rotten wood of Qinling Mountains, it found that Bacillus were the predominant species among the isolated strains, and B. methylotrophicus 1EJ7 performed best on cellulose degradation. Meanwhile, the β-glucosidase and endoglucanase were successfully cloned and expressed from B. methylotrophicus for the first time, which provided new materials of both strain and the recombinant enzymes for the study of cellulose degradation and its application in industry.

Abstract
Biosurfactants, the microbial originated surface active agents, can modify the physicochemical properties of surfaces and reduce the bacterial adhesion via changing bacterial adhesion interactions on surfaces. They were also able to block oxidative chain reactions and might show antioxidant properties. The goal of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and antibiofilm activities of biosurfactants which were derived from two autochthonous biosurfactant-producing strains, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens NS6 (surfactin), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa MN1 (rhamnolipids). Their antioxidant activities were determined by ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) methods. Ferric thiocyanate (FTC) assay was used for determination of their lipid peroxidation inhibition capacity. Their effect to reduce the adhesion of Streptococcus mutans on polystyrene surfaces and disruption of its pre-formed biofilms were also investigated. Our results indicated that surfactin showed higher antioxidant activity than rhamnolipids and showed relatively similar efficiency to BHA that suggests it as a good alternative for synthetic antioxidants. In other hand, rhamnolipid conditioned surfaces showed higher antiadhesive and antibiofilm activity in comparison with surfactin treated surfaces.

Abstract
Biocontrol is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly technique used in agricultural production. We isolated and screened a bacterial strain from the soils of a peach orchard with high yield. Using biochemical and physiological analysis as well as phylogenetic sequencing data, we identified a strain of Bacillus methylotrophicus, strain XJ-C. The results of our screening trials showed that XJ-C was able to suppress M. fructicola at an inhibition rate of 81.57%. Following the application of a 1×109 CFU/mL XJ-C strain suspension to the fruits, leaves, and shoots of peach trees infected with M. fructicola, the inhibition rate reached 64.31%, 97.34%, and 64.28%, respectively. Using OM and SEM, we observed that, under the inhibition of strain XJ-C, M. fructicola mycelium and spores were abnormally shaped. Under TEM, cell walls were transparent, organelles had disappeared, and the intracellular vacuole was deformed. Thus, XJ-C has the potential to be used in biocontrol.

Abstract
Antiseptics and disinfectants are widely applied for eliminating microorganisms. However, microorganisms dwelling in the biofilm are less susceptible and in some cases resistant to biocide treatment. The present study describes isolation and characterization of lipopeptide biosurfactant exhibiting disinfectant-like activity. Biosurfactant was produced by an endo-rhizospheric bacterium Bacillus tequilensis strain SDS21. Biosurfactant reduced the surface tension of water from 72 to 30 mN/m with CMC of 40 mg/l. The Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry analysis of biosurfactant suggested it to be a mixture of C14, C15, C16 and C17 surfactin homologues. The lipopeptide biosurfactant exhibited bactericidal activity against planktonic cells and biofilm residing sessile cells. The biosurfactant treatment eradicated more than 99% of bacterial biofilm present on polystyrene, glass and stainless steel surface. The biosurfactant retained its bactericidal and biofilm eradicating activities even after exposure to extreme conditions like high temperate and extreme pH. Unlike some of the commonly used disinfectant, biosurfactant retained its bactericidal and biofilm removing activity even in the hard water containing Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions. Thus, suggesting that biosurfactant produced by strain SDS21 can be used as a disinfectant or in disinfectant-like formulations effective against both planktonic and biofilm residing bacteria.

Abstract
The use of natural preservatives has attracted considerable attention owing to their generally safe and environmentally friendly properties. In this study, we investigated the effects of the preservative A1, composed of plantaricin 163, thymol, and surfactin, on bacterial communities and storage quality of refrigerated crucian carp. A total of 522 operational taxonomic units belonging to 20 phyla and 272 genera were identified by high-throughput sequencing, showing a comprehensive coverage of bacterial composition of crucian carp. In untreated samples after spoilage, Brochothrix was the predominant genus, followed by Aeromonas and Pseudomonas. After treatment with A1, the growth of these spoilage bacteria was significantly inhibited according to high-throughput sequencing and plate counts, and Lactococcus became the most abundant organism at the end of storage. Meanwhile, compared with control samples, the shelf life of A1-treated samples extended from 3 to 12 days on the basis of the sensory evaluation and the total viable counts. Furthermore, the total volatile basic nitrogen, thiobarbituric acid, and pH values for A1-treated samples were significantly lower than that of control samples. The results indicate that preservative A1 has potential commercial application in the preservation of refrigerated crucian carp.

Abstract
Biosurfactants are surface-active compounds that display a range of physiological functions. The present study investigated the antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-adhesive or anti-biofilm potential of biosurfactants isolated from Bacillus subtilis VSG4 and Bacillus licheniformis VS16. The antioxidant activity of the biosurfactants was studied in vitro using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and hydroxyl radicals. At 5 mg/mL of the biosurfactant concentration, the scavenging of DPPH and hydroxyl radicals was found to be between 69.1-73.5% and 63.3-69.8%, respectively. The biosurfactants also displayed significant antibacterial activities against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The anti-adhesive activities of the biosurfactants were evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29523, Salmonella typhimurium ATCC 19430, and Bacillus cereus ATCC 11778. The biosurfactants exhibited anti-adhesive activity, even at concentrations of 3-5 mg/mL. Moreover, both biosurfactants displayed notable anti-biofilm activities with a biofilm eradication percentage ranging from 63.9 to 80.03% for VSG4 biosurfactant, and from 61.1-68.4% for VS16 biosurfactant. Furthermore, VSG4 biosurfactant exhibited emulsification and surface tension stability over a wide range of pH (4-10) and temperature up to 100 °C. These results show that VSG4 and VS16 biosurfactants can be potentially used as natural antioxidants, antimicrobials, and/or anti-adhesive agents for food and biomedical applications.

Abstract
Synthetic surfactants are becoming increasingly unpopular in many applications due to previously disregarded effects on biological systems and this has led to a new focus on replacing such products with biosurfactants that are biodegradable and produced from renewal resources. Microbially derived biosurfactants have been investigated in numerous studies in areas including: increasing feed digestibility in an agricultural context, improving seed protection and fertility, plant pathogen control, antimicrobial activity, antibiofilm activity, wound healing and dermatological care, improved oral cavity care, drug delivery systems and anticancer treatments. The development of the potential of biosurfactants has been hindered somewhat by the myriad of approaches taken in their investigations, the focus on pathogens as source species and the costs associated with large-scale production. Here, we focus on various microbial sources of biosurfactants and the current trends in terms of agricultural and biomedical applications.

Abstract
The bacterial strain F4, isolated from olive oil-contaminated soil, has been found to produce biosurfactants as confirmed by oil displacement test and the emulsification index results. The identification of the strain F4, by 16S ribosomal RNA gene, showed a close similarity to Bacillus safensis, therefore the strain has been termed Bacillus safensis F4. The Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) and the High Pressure Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) demonstrated that the biosurfactant had a lipopeptide structure and was classified as surfactin. The present study showed also that the produced biosurfactant has an important antibacterial activity against several pathogen strains as monitored with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) micro-assays. In particular, it presented an interesting anti-planktonic activity with a MIC of 6.25 mg mL-1 and anti-adhesive activity which exceeded 80% against the biofilm-forming Staphylococcus epidermidis S61 strain. Moreover, the produced lipopeptide showed an antitumor activity against T47D breast cancer cells and B16F10 mouse melanoma cells with IC50 of 0.66 mg mL-1 and 1.17 mg mL-1, respectively. Thus, our results demonstrated that Bacillus safensis F4 biosurfactant exhibited a polyvalent activity via a considerable antibiofilm and antitumoral potencies.

Abstract
In this work, the extraction, structural analysis, and identification as well as antimicrobial, anti-adhesive, and antibiofilm activities of lipopeptides produced by Enterobacter cloacae C3 strain were studied. A combination of chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques offers opportunities for a better characterization of the biosurfactant structure. Thin layer chromatography (TLC) and HPLC for amino acid composition determination are used. Efficient spectroscopic techniques have been utilized for investigations on the biochemical structure of biosurfactants, such as Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry analysis. This is the first work describing the production of different isoforms belonging to kurstakin and surfactin families by E cloacae strain. Three kurstakin homologues differing by the fatty acid chain length from C10 to C12 were detected. The spectrum of lipopeptides belonging to surfactin family contains various isoforms differing by the fatty acid chain length as well as the amino acids at positions four and seven. Lipopeptide C3 extract exhibited important antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, antifungal activity, and interesting anti-adhesive and disruptive properties against biofilm formation by human pathogenic bacterial strains: Salmonella typhimurium, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, and Candida albicans.

Abstract
The cosmetic industry is currently one of the fasting growing sections of the economy in many countries. The recent tendency toward the use of cosmetics of a natural origin has driven the industry to seek alternatives to synthetic components in the formulation of products. Biosurfactants are natural compounds that have considerable potential for application in the formulation of safe, effective cosmetics as a replacement for commonly used chemical tensioactive agents. The present review provides essential information on the physicochemical and biological properties of saponins and microbial biosurfactants employed in cosmetic products, with a focus on the use of these natural compounds in shampoos, addressing the current state of research and patents involving biosurfactants for this purpose. Abstract
Members of the bacterial genus Bacillus are known as producers of a broad spectrum of antibiotic compounds of proteinaceous nature that possess inhibitory activity against different saprophytic and pathogenic microorganisms. In the current research, a peptide synthesized by Bacillus methylotrophicus strain BM47, previously isolated from a natural thermal spring in Bulgaria, was identified and characterized as a bacteriocin. In vitro antimicrobial screening of the crude bacteriocin substance of B. methylotrophicus BM47 showed activity against the plant pathogenic fungi Fusarium moniliforme, Aspergillus awamori, Penicillium sp., Aspergillus niger and Gram-negative bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The antimicrobial activity of the crude bacteriocin substance was partially inhibited by the enzymes trypsin, Alcalase®, Savinase®, proteinase K, papain and Esperase®, while catalase was not effective. The crude bacteriocin substance was relatively pH resistant, but sensitive to the action of heat and most organic solvents and detergents tested. To obtain the active protein fractions, crude bacteriocin substance was purified by fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC) using a strong anion exchange column. Tricine-sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis demonstrated that the purified bacteriocin had molecular mass of 19 578 Da. The amino acid analysis performed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) revealed that the isolated bacteriocin consisted of 17 types of amino acids, with the highest mol fraction expressed as percent of serine (29.3), valine (10.3), alanine (9.8) and tyrosine (7.1).
