Abstract
Human enteric adenoviruses (HAdV-F40/41) play a crucial role as causative agents of acute gastroenteritis (AGE), particularly affecting children in low-and middle-income countries. This study investigated the prevalence, genetic diversity, and molecular characteristics of HAdV-F40/41 in AGE cases reported in Brazil from 2021 to 2023, a period after the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 1980 stool samples collected from medically attended AGE patients from nine states were analyzed by TaqMan-based qPCR. Overall, HAdV was detected in 16.6% (n = 328/1980) of cases, with the highest prevalence observed in children under five years of age. The positive HAdV samples were genotyped through partial sequencing of the hexon and/or fiber genes followed by phylogenetic analysis. Enteric HAdVs (HAdV-F40/41) were detected in 3.2% (n = 63/1980) of samples, with HAdV-F41 (44.1%) being the most common genotype. Among the non-enteric types, HAdV-C (29.4%) was the most prevalent, followed by HAdV-B (13.2%), HAdV-A (10.3%), and HAdV-D (2.9%). Phylogenetic analysis of the hexon (HVR1-HVR6) and fiber (Shaft) gene regions identified two major clusters, H-GTC1 and F-GTC2, showing close genetic relationships with global strains. HAdV-F40/41 demonstrated significantly higher viral loads compared to non-enteric HAdVs. These findings highlight the importance of continued surveillance of HAdV-F to better understand its role in AGE cases and support public health strategies, including potential vaccine development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human adenoviruses (HAdVs) cause various diseases, and they frequently undergo recombination. As adenoviruses are susceptible to recombination, whole-genome sequencing and analysis are essential approaches to understanding viral properties. In the present study, we performed whole-genome sequencing to characterize adenoviruses and assess the local epidemic genotypes of adenovirus-related diseases in Kobe, Japan. METHODS Eighty HAdV cell culture-positive strains isolated from clinical specimens in Kobe City, Japan, between 2018 and 2022 were used. Whole-genome sequencing, phylogenetic analysis, and recombination analysis were performed. RESULTS Disease-specific HAdV species were detected, with species B and C being the primary species detected for pharyngoconjunctival fever and species F for infectious gastroenteritis. All species B strains belonged to the HAdV-3 genotype. Multiple genotypes were detected in species C, including five strains in which the new genotype, P85H5F5, was identified in pharyngoconjunctival fever specimens. CONCLUSIONS Whole-genome analysis of HAdV is an important approach not only for understanding local epidemics, but also for monitoring the emergence of recombinant genotypes.

Abstract
Human adenovirus type 41 (HAdV-F41) usually causes pediatrics gastroenteritis. However, it was reported to be associated with the outbreaks of severe acute hepatitis of unknown aetiology (SAHUA) in pediatrics during COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of enteric HAdV-F41 in 37,920 paediatric gastroenteritis cases from 2017 to 2022 in Guangzhou, China. All children presented were tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 during the "zero-COVID" period. The main clinical symptom of the children was diarrhea (96.5%). No fatalities nor liver abnormal symptoms was found. In 2021, one year since the pandemic of COVID-19, the prevalence of HAdV-F41 abruptly increased from 3.71% to 8.64% (P < 0.001). All of HAdV-F41 circulating worldwide were classified into eight different subtypes (G1-G8) based on the phylogenetic clustering permutation of the four capsid genes of HAdV-F41. G3 was the predominant subtype (56.2%; 77/137). CRV5 isolates from SAHUA cases belong to this subtype, in which N312D and H335D mutations in the short fiber knob were identified in both Guangzhou and CRV5 isolates, presumably changing the virus tropism by directly interacting with the heparin sulfate (HS) receptor. Additionally, a novel recombinant G6 subtype, which is unique and only circulating in China was first identified in this study. This is the first study highlighting the prevalence of HAdV-F41 in paediatric cases of gastroenteritis during COVID-19 pandemic in China. The clinical and viral evolution finding of HAdV-F41 provide insight into the clinical characteristics of children with HAdV-F41 infections as well as the uncertain role of HAdV-F41 in the cause of SAHUA.

Abstract
Background Viral diarrhea is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in children. This study aimed to conduct etiological surveillance of viral diarrhea in Zhangzhou city, Fujian province, China, from 2017 to 2019 to identify the prevalence, distribution, and characteristics of viral pathogens causing gastrointestinal infections in the region. Methods Stool samples were collected from patients with acute diarrhea in Zhangzhou city, Fujian province, China, from 2017 to 2019. Rotavirus, norovirus, astrovirus, and adenovirus were detected using fluorescence immunochromatography assay. Results Of the total 5,627 samples that were collected, at least one of the viruses (rotavirus, norovirus, astrovirus and adenovirus) was found to be positive in 1,422 samples. Rotavirus, norovirus, astrovirus, and adenovirus, were detected in 53.73, 16.68, 15.52, and 14.97%, respectively. Mixed infections were determined in 17.65% of the positive samples. The predominant mixed infections observed were a combination of norovirus and astrovirus, followed by rotavirus and norovirus, and rotavirus and astrovirus. The highest positive rate was observed in the 12-23-month group for rotavirus and adenovirus, while a significantly higher positive rate was observed for norovirus and astrovirus in the 6-11-month group. Conclusion These findings from this etiological surveillance highlight the significant burden of viral diarrhea in Zhangzhou city, with rotavirus being the predominant pathogen. The identification of common mixed infections provides insights into the complex nature of viral diarrhea transmission. Target interventions and public health strategies should be implemented, particularly during the winter and spring seasons, to prevent and control the spread of viral pathogens causing gastrointestinal infections in this region.

Abstract
PURPOSE Human adenoviruses (HAdVs) have always been suggested as one of the main causes of gastroenteritis in children. However, no comprehensive report on the global epidemiology of these viruses in pediatric gastroenteritis is available. METHODS A systematic search was conducted to obtain published papers from 2003 to 2023 in three main databases PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. RESULTS The estimated global pooled prevalence of HAdV infection in children with gastroenteritis was 10% (95% CI: 9-11%), with a growing trend after 2010. The highest prevalence was observed in Africa (20%, 95% CI: 14-26%). The prevalence was higher in inpatients (11%; 95% CI: 8-13%) and patients aged 5 years old and younger (9%; 95% CI: 7-10%). However, no significant difference was observed between male and female patients (P = 0.63). The most prevalent species was found to be the species F (57%; 95% CI: 41-72%). The most common HAdVs observed in children with gastroenteritis were types 40/41, 38, and 2. Analysis of case-control studies showed an association between HAdV and gastroenteritis in children (OR: 2.28, 95% CI; 1.51-3.44). CONCLUSION This study provided valuable insights into the importance of HAdVs in children with gastroenteritis, especially in hospitalized and younger children. The results can be used in future preventive measurements and the development of effective vaccines.

Abstract
Human astroviruses (HAstV) are etiologic agents of acute gastroenteritis that most often afflict young children and elderly adults. Most studies of HAstV have focused on epidemiology. In this study, we collected 10 stool samples from a diarrhea outbreak from a diarrhea sentinel surveillance hospital in Beijing. Samples were evaluated immediately using parallel multiplex RT-qPCR and nanopore sequencing, and were then amplified by designed primers and Sanger sequencing to obtain whole genome sequences. Six isolates were categorized as HAstV-5 and subjected to whole genome analysis to characterize their genetic variation and evolution. Full genome analysis revealed low genetic variation (99.38-100% identity) among isolates. Phylogenetic analysis showed that all isolates were closely related to domestic strains Yu/1-CHN and 2013/Fuzhou/85. The recombination breakpoint of the six isolates was located at 2741 bp in the overlap region of ORF1a and ORF1b, similar to those of Yu/1-CHN and 2013/Fuzhou/85. Overall, our study highlights the combined use of RT-qPCR and sequencing as an important tool in rapid diagnosis and acquisition of whole genome sequences of HAstV.

Abstract
Introduction Human astrovirus (HAstV) is an important pathogen of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in children. This study was aimed at investigating the diversity and epidemiology of classic and novel HAstV in outpatient children aged 0-16 years old with AGE in Shanghai. Methods From May 2020 to December 2022, a total of 1,482 stool samples were collected from children diagnosed as AGE from the Children's Hospital of Fudan University. HAstV was identified using pan-astrovirus consensus primers by Reverse transcription PCR. Results During the study period, 3.3% (49/1,482) of specimens were identified as HAstV, with a detection rate of 2.5% (37/1,482) for classic HAstV and 0.8% (12/1,482) for novel HAstV. Among the 12 novel HAstV strains, 11 (91.7%) belonged to the HAstV-MLB and 1 (8.3%) was HAstV-VA. Genotyping revealed six circulating genotypes. Strain HAstV-1 was predominant in the study population with a detection rate of 1.8% (26/1,482) followed by HAstV-MLB1 (0.7%, 10/1,482) and HAstV-4 (0.6%, 9/1,482). Of note, all the HAstV-4 strains detected in this study were close to one astrovirus strain isolated from Bactrian camels with 99.0-100.0% amino acid sequences identity. In this study, HAstV was detected in all age groups with the highest detection rate of HAstV-positive specimens observed in children older than 73 months (5.7%, 12/209). Discussion This study provided useful information and contributed to the molecular epidemiology of both classic and novel HAstV, which were simultaneously characterized and reported for the first time in Shanghai.

Abstract
Rotavirus (RV), norovirus (NoV), sapovirus (SaV), and human astrovirus (HAstV) are the most common viral causes of gastroenteritis in children worldwide. From 2016 to 2021, we conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study to determine the prevalence of these viruses in hospitalized children under five years old in Nam Dinh and Thua Thien Hue provinces in Vietnam during the pilot introduction of the RV vaccine, Rotavin-M1 (POLYVAC, Hanoi, Vietnam). We randomly selected 2317/6718 (34%) acute diarrheal samples from children <5 years of age enrolled at seven sentinel hospitals from December 2016 to May 2021; this period included one year surveillance pre-vaccination from December 2016 to November 2017. An ELISA kit (Premier Rotaclone®, Meridian Bioscience, Inc., Cincinnati, OH, USA) was used to detect RV, and two multiplex real-time RT-PCR assays were used for the detection of NoV, SaV and HAstV. The prevalence of RV (single infection) was reduced from 41.6% to 22.7% (p < 0.0001) between pre- and post-vaccination periods, while the single NoV infection prevalence more than doubled from 8.8% to 21.8% (p < 0.0001). The SaV and HAstV prevalences slightly increased from 1.9% to 3.4% (p = 0.03) and 2.1% to 3.3% (p = 0.09), respectively, during the same period. Viral co-infections decreased from 7.2% to 6.0% (p = 0.24), mainly due to a reduction in RV infection. Among the genotypeable samples, NoV GII.4, SaV GI.1, and HAstV-1 were the dominant types, representing 57.3%, 32.1%, and 55.0% among the individual viral groups, respectively. As the prevalence of RV decreases following the national RV vaccine introduction in Vietnam, other viral pathogens account for a larger proportion of the remaining diarrhea burden and require continuing close monitoring.

Abstract
AIM Human astrovirus (HAstV) is an important causative agent of gastroenteritis in humans, which mainly infects young children and the elderly. The goal of this study was to conduct a meta-analytic review of the prevalence of HAstV amongst patients with gastroenteritis, and to shed light on the connection between HAstV infection and gastroenteritis. METHODS Systematic literature searches were conducted to identify all potentially relevant studies recorded up to April 8th, 2022. For study weighting, the inverse variance method was employed and the random-effects model was applied to evaluate data. For case-control studies, the pooled odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated to establish the relationship between HAstV infection and gastroenteritis. RESULTS Among 302423 gastroenteritis patients from 69 different countries, the overall pooled prevalence of HAstV infection was 3.48% (95% CI: 3.11%-3.89%). Case-control approach was used in 39 investigations, and the overall prevalence of HAstV infection among the 11342 healthy controls was 2.01% (95% CI: 1.40%-2.89%). Gastroenteritis and HAstV infection were associated with a pooled OR of 2.16 (95% CI: 1.72-2.71; P < 0.0001; I2 = 33.7%). The most commonly found HAstV genotypes in gastroenteritis patients were HAstV1 (62.18%), HAstV7 (33.33%), and HAstV-MLB1 (17.43%). CONCLUSION The frequency of HAstV infection was the highest in children under the age of five, and in developing countries. The prevalence rate of HAstV was not influenced by gender. Semi-nested and nested RT-PCR were highly sensitive assays for detecting HAstV infections.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human adenovirus (HAdV) has been recognized as one of the common enteric viruses associated with acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in children. The aim of this study was carried out to illustrate the epidemiological characterization of HAdV Infections among children younger than 15 years in Shanghai during COVID-19. METHODS During May 2020 and April 2022, 1048 fecal samples were collected from children ≤ 15 years diagnosed with AGE in the Children's Hospital of Fudan University. HAdV was identified by PCR and sequenced with specific primers. All the obtained sequences were analyzed by MEGA (version 6.0). Demographic information and clinical features data were also collected and analyzed. RESULTS In total, 97 (9.3%, 97/1048) samples were detected to be HAdV during May 2020 and April 2022. We found an atypical upsurge in HAdV infection in the year 2021 after a major suppression in the year 2020. Approximately 84.5% (82/97) of HAdV-infected children were aged 0-60 months. Among the 97 HAdV-positive samples, only two species and five genotypes were detected. HAdV-F (88.7%, 86/97) was the most prevalent species and HAdV-F41 (87.6%, 85/97) was the most common genotype. Diarrhea, vomiting, and fever were the main clinical manifestations in children infected with HAdV. The children aged from 0 to 12 months showed simpler patterns of clinical presentation than those of children older than 13 months. CONCLUSIONS Our findings described the epidemiological changes of HAdV infection in children with AGE during the COVID-19, which further underscored the importance of continuous surveillance of HAdV at both local and global scales.

Abstract
Human astrovirus (HAstV) is one of the main pathogens that cause sporadic cases of acute gastroenteritis, sometimes leading to outbreaks. This study aimed to elucidate the epidemiological and etiological characteristics of HAstV outbreaks worldwide. Literature on HAstV outbreaks published before January 2022 was retrieved from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WanFang, WeiPu, PubMed, and Web of Science databases. Date, region, population, settings, transmission modes, clinical symptoms, and etiological characteristics of the outbreaks were collected and analyzed. Thirty-one articles on 32 HAstV outbreaks reported between November 1978 and October 2018 were included. The outbreaks mainly occurred in autumn (14/32, 43.75%), and more of them were reported in 1996, 2004, and 2017. Outbreaks were primarily distributed in the Northern Hemisphere and mainly occurred in nursery centers and kindergartens (9/29, 31.03%), hospitals (5/29, 17.24%), and schools (4/29, 13.79%). Viral genotypes were identified during 19 outbreaks, and HAstV-1 was predominant (8/19, 42.10%). Eleven outbreaks were caused by mixed infection, and norovirus (9/11, 81.82%) and rotavirus (5/11, 45.45%) were the most common mixed pathogens. The transmission routes were reported in 9 outbreaks of mixed infection, and most (7/9) were related to waterborne and foodborne transmission. Although HAstV outbreaks are infrequently reported, it is necessary to consider HAstV in norovirus-negative gastroenteritis outbreaks. In addition, local Centers for Disease Control and Prevention should have the capacity to handle HAstV outbreaks and identify pathogens.

Abstract
Introduction Diarrheal diseases have existed since antiquity, resulting in high morbidity and mortality rates, particularly among children in developing countries. To eradicate these diseases, it is crucial to identify the pathogens that cause them and immediately initiate appropriate treatment. This retrospective study aims to investigate the incidence of childhood gastroenteritis and the epidemiological features of its causative agents. Methods During an 11-year period (2010-2020), as many as 51159 stool samples were obtained from children aged 0-17 years. These samples were examined for the presence of parasitic, bacterial, and/or viral gastroenteritis agents and evaluated retrospectively. The records obtained from the "ENLIL Hospital Information Management System Modules" were used to collect patient-related information. Results The most frequently observed pathogens were rotavirus (22.4%), adenovirus (2.2), Giardia lamblia (1.6%), and Campylobacter spp. (3.0%), considering the number of samples examined for each organism. The total incidence of viruses was about 25%, parasites 5% and the rate of pathogenic bacteria was 2%. In one-way ANOVA analysis, pathogen positivity was found to be significantly higher in children aged 3-5 years compared to those aged 15-17 and 0-2 [F (5, 51153, 17,588, p<0.001)]. The highest demand for the investigation of GE factors from stool samples was made in August, September and July. According to the number of samples examined, the highest pathogen positivity was in February, October, May, December and March, respectively. The most common pathogens involved in coinfections, occurring in 0.04% of the studied cases, were rotavirus and Giardia lamblia. Conclusions Parasitic, viral, and bacterial gastroenteritis maintain their current status with a high prevalence in children under 18 years of age, especially in children aged 0-4 years in Erzurum, Turkey.

Abstract
Human astrovirus (HAstV) composes of classic HAstV serotypes 1-8 and recently discovered novel HAstV-MLB and HAstV-VA strains. A number of studies have demonstrated that wastewater analysis is an effective approach to understand the prevalence and diversity of enteric viruses in local population. However, a comprehensive analysis of classic and novel HAstVs in sewage is still lacking. In this study, sewage samples were collected monthly from Jinan, China during 2018-2019. Quantification of HAstV genomes was performed by real-time quantitative PCR. Different from previous studies which focused on partial ORF1b or ORF2 gene, complete ORF2 region of HAstV was amplified from sewage concentrates, and amplicons were subjected to next generation sequencing (NGS) and genetic analysis. This methodology allowed detection of 18 astroviruses, of which 7 (HAstV-1, -2, -4, -5, VA1, VA2, and VA3) were detected in all sewage samples. A new strain VA6 mapped to the HMO clade was identified in 20.8% of samples, with 82.4%-83.3% nucleotide identities to the closest strain VA5. The viral load of classic, MLB and VA clades in sewage samples ranged from 3.7 × 104 to 4.6 × 107, 3.4 × 104 to 3.9 × 106, and 3.3 × 104 to 4.1 × 106 copies per liter, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis based on complete ORF2 region reflected local HAstVs within each genotype constituted multiple co-circulating lineages. Existence of several new lineages composed exclusively or predominantly of Chinese sequences was observed as well. These results demonstrate sewage contains astroviruses with considerable high diversities. NGS based environmental surveillance greatly improves the understanding of HAstV circulation and should be encouraged.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Human parechovirus (HPeV) has emerged as a pathogen associated with acute gastroenteritis (AGE). AIM To detect the presence of HPeV in the stool samples from Egyptian children with AGE seeking care and the possibility of its co-infection with other enteric viruses. METHODOLOGY One hundred stool samples were collected from children attending Mansoura University Children's Hospital with AGE. HPeV and astrovirus were detected by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). At the same time, detection of rotavirus antigen and norovirus was achieved by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and rapid immunochromatographic method, respectively. RESULTS The most frequently detected virus was rotavirus (39%), followed by norovirus (27%), HPeV (19%), and astrovirus (12%). Interestingly, the single infection with HPeV was 5%. Among the 19 HPeV positive samples, the co-infection of HPeV with other enteric viruses was detected in 9(43.9%) for rotavirus, 7(36.8%) for norovirus, 2(10.5%) for astrovirus, in 3(15.8%) for rotavirus and norovirus and 1(5.3%) for norovirus and astrovirus. Regarding the clinical presentation, there was no significant difference between children infected with HPeV alone and those infected with viruses other than HPeV alone; fever (p = 0.3), vomiting (p = 0.12), abdominal pain (p = 0.12), and grades of severity (P = 0.82). HPeV alone infected children were of mild severity (60%), and their main presenting symptom was fever (60%). CONCLUSIONS Detection of HPeV as a single viral pathogen in the stool of some children with AGE showed that this virus could be a causative agent of AGE in Egyptian children. Therefore, HPeV could be included as one of the viruses screened for AGE diagnosis in children in Egypt.

Abstract
Viral diarrhea is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in children. This study was conducted to disclose the etiological cause and epidemiological features of viral diarrhea among children in China. From 2009 to 2021, active surveillance was performed on pediatric patients with acute diarrhea and tested for five enteric viruses. Positive detection was determined in 65.56% (3325/5072) patients and an age‐specific infection pattern was observed. A significantly higher positive rate was observed in 12–23‐month‐old children for rotavirus (47.46%) and adenovirus (7.06%), while a significantly higher positive rate was observed for norovirus (37.62%) in 6–11‐month‐old patients, and for astrovirus (11.60%) and sapovirus (10.79%) in 24–47‐month‐old patients. A higher positive rate of rotavirus in girls and norovirus in boys was observed only among 6–11 months of patients. We also observed more norovirus among patients from rural areas in the 0–5‐ and 36–47‐month groups and more rotavirus among those from rural areas in the 12–23‐month group. Diarrhea severity was greater for rotavirus in the 6–23‐month group and norovirus in the 6–11‐month group. Coinfections were observed in 29.26% (973/3325) of positive patients, and were most frequently observed between rotavirus and others (89.31%). Our findings could help the prediction, prevention, and potential therapeutic approaches to viral diarrhea in children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To study the molecular epidemiological characteristics of the virus in children with acute viral diarrhea in Changdu of Tibet, China. METHODS Fecal specimens were collected from 96 children with acute diarrhea who visited the People's Hospital of Changdu, Tibet, from November 2018 to November 2020 and were tested for adenovirus, norovirus, astrovirus, sapovirus, and rotavirus. Gene sequencing was performed for the genotypes of these viruses. RESULTS The overall positive rate of the five viruses was 39% (37/96), among which astrovirus had the highest positive rate of 17%, followed by norovirus (9%), rotavirus (8%), adenovirus (7%), and sapovirus (5%). There was no significant difference in the positive rate of the five viruses among different age groups (P>0.05). Only the positive rate of astrovirus was significantly different among the four seasons (P<0.05). For adenovirus, 6 children had F41 type and 1 had C2 type; for norovirus, 6 had GⅠ.3 type, 1 had GⅠ.7 type, 1 had GⅡ.3 type, and 2 had GⅡ.4 Sydney_2012 type; HAstrV-1 type was observed in all children with astrovirus infection; for sapovirus, 1 child each had sporadic GⅠ.2, GⅠ.6, and GⅡ.1 sapovirus and 2 children had unknown type; 6 children had rotavirus G9[P8]. CONCLUSIONS Astrovirus and norovirus are important pathogens in children with acute diarrhea in Changdu, Tibet. The positive rate of adenovirus, norovirus, astrovirus, sapovirus, and rotavirus is not associated with age, and only the positive rate of astrovirus has obvious seasonality. F41 type is the dominant genotype of adenovirus; GⅠ.3 is the dominant genotype of norovirus; HAstrV-1 is the dominant genotype of astrovirus; sporadic GⅠ.2, GⅠ.6, and GⅡ.1 are the dominant genotypes of sapovirus; G9[P8] is the dominant genotype of rotavirus.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the epidemiology of human adenovirus (HAdV), human astrovirus (HAstV), and sapovirus (SaV), children with acute diarrhea in Chongqing, China from 2017 to 2019 were enrolled. Improved surveillance could provide better guidance for diarrhea prevention. METHODS Between 2017 and 2019, fecal specimens were collected from children <14 years of age presenting with acute diarrhea for treatment at the outpatient department of the Children's Hospital, Chongqing Medical University. Human HAdV in the fecal specimens was detected by PCR, while RT-PCR was adopted for the detection of HAstV and SaV. RESULTS A total of 1,352 fecal specimens were screened in this study. The detection rate of HAdV was 4.44% (60/1352), HAstV was 2.81% (38/1352), and SaV was 1.04% (14/1352). The prevalence of enteric viruses in males was not significantly different to females (p > 0.05). We found 96.67% (58/60) of the HAdV-positive cases, 92.11% (35/38) of the HAstV-positive cases, and 100% (14/14) of the SaV-positive cases among the children under 4 years old. HAdV cases were identified throughout the year, while the infection of HAstV peaked from March to May every year. By contrast, SaV was detected in May, July, and from September to December. In total, 41 strains of HAdV-F were identified, including F41 (39/60) and F40 (2/60). Furthermore, A31, B3, B7, C1, C2, C5, and C6 were also detected in the study. In addition, we detected two genotypes of HAstV, HAstV-1 (34/38) and HAstV-5 (4/38), and two genotypes of SaV, GI0.1 (13/14), GI0.2 (1/14). CONCLUSION The enteric viruses HAdV, HAstV, and SaV contribute to the overall burden of diarrhea in Chongqing, especially in children <4 years of age. Two genotypes were identified for HAstV (HAstV-1 and HAstV-5) and SaV (GI.1 and GI.2) with an additional nine genotypes detected in HAdV cases. While the F41 HAdV strain was predominant, HAdV-A31 was also detected in 10% of cases. The study results along with continuous surveillance of enteric viruses will aid in the design and implementation of future enteric vaccines and diarrhea mitigation strategies.

Abstract
Background Human astrovirus (HAstV) and sapovirus (SaV) are common pathogens that can cause acute gastroenteritis (AGE). However, very few studies have reported the molecular epidemiology and clinical information on HAstV and SaV in China. This study aims to determine the molecular epidemiology and clinical features of HAstV and SaV in patients with AGE in Guangzhou, China. Methods For this study, 656 patients with AGE were enrolled. Their stool samples were screened for 15 enteropathogens using Luminex xTAG® Gastrointestinal Pathogen Panel. HAstV and SaV were detected through an in-house multiplex reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction followed by phylogenetic analysis. We described and compared clinical features of AGE in patients with HAstV and SaV. Results Of the 656 stool samples, 63.72% (418/656) were found to be positive, with 550 enteropathogens (296 bacteria and 254 viruses). HAstV and SaV were detected in 20 (3.0%) and 12 (1.8%) samples, respectively. Four genotypes (genotypes 1, 2, 3, and 8) of HAstV and three genotypes (GI.1, GI.2 and GIV) of SaV were identified. Coinfection was observed in ten HAstV-positive and two SaV-positive samples. HAstV was more likely to occur in winter, while SaV in early spring. The median age of the patients with single HAstV infection was higher than that of the patients with other viruses (rotavirus, norovirus, and enteric adenovirus; P = 0.0476) and unknown etiology (P = 0.006). Coinfection with HAstV or SaV were not associated with disease severity (P > 0.05). Conclusion HAstV and SaV are the common causes of AGE in Guangzhou, China.

Abstract
Acute infectious gastroenteritis (AGE) is among the leading causes of mortality in children less than 5 years of age worldwide. There are many causative agents that lead to this infection, with rotavirus being the commonest pathogen in the past decade. However, this trend is now being progressively replaced by another agent, which is the norovirus. Apart from the viruses, bacteria such as Salmonella and Escherichia coli and parasites such as Entamoeba histolytica also contribute to AGE. These agents can be recognised by their respective biological markers, which are mainly the specific antigens or genes to determine the causative pathogen. In conjunction to that, omics technologies are currently providing crucial insights into the diagnosis of acute infectious gastroenteritis at the molecular level. Recent advancement in omics technologies could be an important tool to further elucidate the potential causative agents for AGE. This review will explore the current available biomarkers and antigens available for the diagnosis and management of the different causative agents of AGE. Despite the high-priced multi-omics approaches, the idea for utilization of these technologies is to allow more robust discovery of novel antigens and biomarkers related to management AGE, which eventually can be developed using easier and cheaper detection methods for future clinical setting. Thus, prediction of prognosis, virulence and drug susceptibility for active infections can be obtained. Case management, risk prediction for hospital-acquired infections, outbreak detection, and antimicrobial accountability are aimed for further improvement by integrating these capabilities into a new clinical workflow.

Abstract
Background Human adenovirus (HAdV) had been recognized as one of the most common enteric viruses associated with acute diarrhea in children. The present study was carried out to demonstrate the molecular and epidemiological characterization of HAdV Infections among children in Shandong province in China between July 2017 and June 2018. Methods Fecal specimens were collected from children under 5 years old with acute diarrhea. DNA was extracted from the stool specimens and adenovirus DNA was detected by PCR amplification with specific primers. The amplification products were subjected to electrophoresis and visualized on a UV transilluminator. All positive RT-PCR amplification products were sequenced and the obtained sequences analyzed by MEGA (version 7.0). Demographic information and clinical manifestation data were also analyzed. Results In total, 656 fecal specimens were collected and the overall positive rate of HAdV was 7.47%. HAdV infections were detected in all age groups, in which children aged 13–24 months presented the highest positive rate. Seasonal pattern could be observed with a peak in December, January and February. Diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration and fever were the main clinical manifestations, in which vomiting was the most common accompanied symptom. By phylogenetic analysis, four species (A, B, C, and F) were detected and seven different serotypes were identified. HAdV-41 (48.98%, 24/49) was the most common serotype followed by HAdV-3 (18.37%, 9/49), HAdV-31 (14.29%, 7/49), HAdV-7 (8.16%, 4/49), HAdV-40 (4.08%, 2/49), HAdV-1 (4.08%, 2/49) and HAdV-2 (2.04%, 1/49). Conclusion This study indicated that HAdV infection was an important cause of acute diarrhea among children under 5 years old in Shandong province. The results will contribute to (a) increase understanding of the role of HAdV in diarrheal children and enhance identification of the predominant diarrhea pathogen for diagnosis; (b) avoid abuse of antibiotics; (c) monitor the change of prevalent HAdV serotypes and promote vaccine development and vaccination.
