Abstract
CONTEXT Medical students report high levels of perceived stress and burnout, especially during the preclinical years. The combination of physical stressors from poor posture, poor sleep quality, and mental stressors from the rigorous curriculum stimulates the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) to secrete cortisol. Previous studies have shown that persistent elevated cortisol levels are associated with negative health outcomes. OBJECTIVES We conducted an Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved study to determine if regular osteopathic manipulative treatments (OMTs) could impact the stress levels of first-year osteopathic medical students (OMSs) at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM) Harlem campus by measuring physiologic stress through changes in weekly salivary cortisol levels, perceived emotional and psychological stress levels, and cognitive function. METHODS We recruited 10 first-year OMSs who were not currently receiving external OMT outside of weekly coursework; other forms of external stress management, such as yoga or meditation, were not controlled for in this study. Utilizing a random number generator, the 10 student respondents were split into a control group that received no treatment and a treatment group that received 15 min of weekly OMT for 6 weeks. The treatment consisted of condylar decompression, paraspinal inhibition, and supine rib raising, which are techniques that are known to balance the SNS and parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). Cortisol levels were quantified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) cortisol immunoassay via salivary samples collected at the beginning of each weekly session, prior to treatment for the treatment group, at the same time of day each week. We also measured participants' weekly subjective perception of stress utilizing the College Student Stress Scale (CSSS) and cognitive function utilizing the Lumosity Performance Index (LPI). We conducted a two-tailed, unpaired t-test as well as a U test for the cortisol levels, given the smaller sample size and potential for a nonnormal distribution. RESULTS A lower cortisol level was correlated to a higher optical density (OD), the logarithmic measure of percent transmission of light through a sample; analysis of our data from the ELISA cortisol immunoassay showed an average weekly change in OD (∆OD) for the treatment group of 0.0215 and an average weekly ∆OD of -0.0044 in the control group. The t-test showed p=0.0497, and our U test showed a p=0.0317. Both tests indicated a statistically significant decrease across the weekly salivary cortisol levels in the treatment group utilizing a p<0.05. An additional effect-size analysis supported our finding of a significant decrease in weekly cortisol levels in the treatment group, Cohen's d=1.460. Based on the CSSS responses, there was no significant difference in perceived stress between the control and treatment groups (p=0.8655, two-tailed). Analysis of the LPI revealed no statistically significant difference in cognitive performance (p=0.9265, two-tailed). CONCLUSIONS Our study supports the claim that OMT that targets the SNS and PNS has a significant impact on cortisol levels. While the reduction in cortisol levels was statistically significant, the broader physiological impact remains unclear. Further research is necessary to determine whether this reduction translates to meaningful clinical benefits.

Abstract
It is widely acknowledged that healthcare practitioner well-being is under threat, as many factors like excessive workloads, perceived lack of organizational support, the rapid introduction of new technologies, repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, and other factors have transformed the health care workplace. Distress, anxiety and burnout are on the rise, and are particularly concerning for health professions' students who must navigate challenging academic and clinical demands, in addition to personal responsibilities. While not a panacea for the systemic issues at play, 'mindfulness practices' have shown some promise in supporting students to navigate stressful environments. Yet despite calls for more phenomenological studies, little is known about health professions students' lived experiences of learning about and using mindfulness in higher education contexts. The objective of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to inquire into the first-hand lived experiences of health professions students by examining their written reflections on learning about and using mindfulness in a higher education context. The study reports on themes identified in an analysis of students' phenomenological reflections written during and following a mindfulness elective course offered at a Canadian University. The analysis revealed four predominant themes: (a) reframing perceptions, (b)'being' while 'doing', (c) witnessing the struggle, and (d) compassion for self and others. In a time when health professionals are increasingly under strain, and systemic reform is needed but slow to take shape, the findings of this study reveal potential affordances of mindfulness for helping students to navigate the myriad of challenges they face. The findings are unique in their in-depth exploration of students' reflections on the experience of learning about and engaging in 'mindfulness practices' in a higher education context. The findings contribute first-hand perspectives to the evolving field of mindfulness education research and generate new conversations about mindfulness education in the health professions curriculum.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Approximately 40% of medical students in Mexico experience academic burnout syndrome (ABS), highlighting the lack of institutional strategies to prevent or mitigate this phenomenon, leaving students vulnerable. The aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of a yoga-based intervention (YBI) in medical students with ABS. MATERIALS AND METHODS A quasi-experimental study was designed for medical students whose burnout levels were assessed using the MBI-SS. Subsequently, those students with ABS participated in an YBI for six weeks, with a weekly session of 60 minutes, incorporating postures, body movements, and guided breathing to induce a meditative state and deep relaxation. At the end of the intervention, burnout levels were reassessed. Qualitative variables were analyzed as frequencies and percentages, while quantitative variables were analyzed as means and standard errors of the mean. Paired samples t test was used to compare all dimensions of ABS scores before and after YBI, with P ≤ 0.05 considered statistically significant. All data were analyzed using SPSS software. RESULTS The prevalence of ABS was found to be 10.6%. After YBI, 87.5% of students showed changes in scores across all dimensions of ABS, emotional exhaustion decreased from 20.13 ± 0.9 to 12.38 ± 1.9 (P = 0.002), depersonalization decreased from 9.0 ± 0.7 to 5.8 ± 1.0 (P = 0.025), and academic efficacy increased from 16.7 ± 0.9 to 23.8 ± 2.1 (P = 0.019). CONCLUSIONS YBI was effective in reducing ABS scores in medical students, consistent with public health goals. Further studies are needed, and consideration should be given to incorporating wellness programs as an integral part of medical education to address mental health issues are recommended.

Abstract
Background: Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion produced by excessive and prolonged professional stress. Its prevalence is unclear, and figures from 2 to 81% have been reported, although studies focused on this issue are scarce and inconsistent definitions and the absence of validated measurement tools make comparisons difficult. Methods: Our narrative review's purpose was to explore physician and medical student burnout across medical specialties and in specific subgroups, including young doctors, researchers, and female physicians. We also assess burnout effects in medical students and patients and the possible strategies to prevent and reverse it. Results: Burnout affects doctors, medical students, and patients. It impacts significantly on physicians mental health and can be the trigger for depression, substance abuse, and suicide attempts. Moreover, this psychological and physical exhaustion can also increase the risk of systemic conditions such as cardiovascular disease. Physician burnout increases the risk of medical errors, reduces professional efficacy, and might compromise patients' safety. Strategies focusing on mental, physical, social, and occupational well-being can help to prevent and treat burnout. These include resilience training, self-care, exercise, work-life balance, and institutional changes, such as reducing administrative burdens and improving electronic health record systems. Medical students' burnout might be triggered by specific problems related to their young age, economic situation, exam stress and workload, high academic expectations, lack of support, and others. Conclusions: Burnout is common in physicians and medical students, negatively affecting mental health, professional/academic efficacy, and patient outcomes. Addressing burnout requires a multifaceted approach, including individual strategies and systemic changes within institutions.

Abstract
Introduction Happiness differs according to population groups and cultures. For medical students, more studies have focused on negative emotions than on happiness. This study explored the overall perceptions and standards of medical students to analyze the concept of happiness from various perspectives in the Korean context. Methods A concept mapping analysis comprising five stages was conducted with medical students at Yonsei University's Wonju College of Medicine in South Korea. Focus questions were generated in Phase 1, and 23 students participated in individual brainstorming in Phase 2. Fifty statements were confirmed in Phase 3. Sixteen students assigned an importance score to each statement and participated in the individual sorting of statements and naming of categories in Phase 4. Finally, the concept maps were interpreted using multidimensional scaling and hierarchical cluster analysis. Results The medical students' perception of happiness was divided into two dimensions, "Study-Life" on the X-axis and "Self-Relationship" on the Y-axis, and was expressed in three categories and five sub-categories. The subcategories of "Self-management" and "Quality of life" were grouped under "Personal development," "Social support" was named as a single category, and "Guaranteed future" and "Academic achievement" were grouped as "Professional fulfillment." The most important sub-category for medical students was "Social support." Among the statements generated in these categories, the most important was "When I have a healthy body and stamina," which belonged to "Quality of life." Discussion This study showed that to enhance the happiness of medical students, a system that supports their social relationships, careers, learning, and individual efforts is required. The results of this study can provide information for the development of student support programs that allow medical educators and institutions to promote medical students' happiness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Female physicians are more likely to experience burnout and less likely to hold leadership positions. Effective interventions are needed to support women physicians in the workforce. OBJECTIVE To determine if a shared learning, social-based leadership development program will impact burnout and career trajectory for female physicians. DESIGN Cohort study. SETTING Multispecialty healthcare system and state medical society members. PARTICIPANTS Burnout and Engagement surveys were emailed to 5000 physicians within the Baylor Scott & White Health System (BSWH). The external control group consisted of 516 female physicians within the Texas Medical Association (TMA) and not associated with BSWH. Internal controls included both male (670) and female physicians (240) who did not participate in the program. INTERVENTION The Women Leaders in Medicine (WLiM) program included twice-annual in person summits and support programs throughout the 2-year study period. MEASUREMENTS The Maslach Burnout Index (MBI) was utilized to evaluate burnout. Surveys were conducted at three separate points and included interest in leadership, intent to retain current employment, and open comments. RESULTS Participants in WLiM had decreased frequency of high emotional exhaustion (mean 2.9 decreased to 2.5), decreased occurrence of high depersonalization (mean 1.6 decreased to 1.3), and improved levels of personal accomplishment (mean 4.7 improved to 5.1) and leadership aspiration (mean 7.4 to 7.8). Intention to stay went from 4.0 to 4.1. CONCLUSIONS Burnout can be improved, and leadership aspirations fostered with a group leadership development in a cohort of female physicians.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The demanding educational environment requires sustained motivation and resilience, while the intense psychological stress among medical studies increases the risk of depression, anxiety, and burnout. Student burnout is an escalating issue among medical students worldwide, significantly affecting their career success and overall well-being. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for effective burnout prevention strategies. Therefore, this study aims to explore the role of depression, anxiety, academic motivation and resilience in student burnout in a sample of Hungarian medical students. METHODS An online survey was conducted among medical students at the University of Szeged, Hungary (N = 214; Mage = 21.82 years; 73.8% female). The survey first collected demographic information, after which participants completed five scales: the Maslach Burnout Inventory Student Survey, the Beck Depression Inventory Short Form, the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the Academic Motivation Scale, and the Academic Resilience Scale. RESULTS Binary logistic regression for emotional exhaustion identified depression (OR = 0.32, p < .001), state anxiety (OR = 0.04, p < .01), and amotivation (OR = 0.19, p < .01) as significant predictors. For cynicism, the final model incorporated state anxiety (OR = 0.05, p < .001), intrinsic motivation through achievement (OR = -0.08, p < .05), external regulation (OR = 0.13 p < .01), and amotivation (OR = 0.41, p < .001). For reduced academic efficacy, depression (OR = 0.15, p < .001), alongside achievement (OR = -0.133, p < .01) and stimulation (OR = -0.10, p < .05) as intrinsic motivations were significant predictors. CONCLUSIONS This study reveals a significant prevalence of student burnout among medical students, particularly in clinical years, with emotional exhaustion and cynicism being more prominent. Depression and low motivation were strongly associated with higher student burnout, while intrinsic motivation appeared to protect against reduced academic efficacy. These findings underscore the importance of addressing mental health and fostering resilience to mitigate student burnout during medical training.

Abstract
Introduction Evidence shows that throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers have experienced high levels of burnout. The preceding literature also points to the need to consider the three elements of burnout independently, as they appear to have different evolutionary trends and possibly different buffering and amplifying variables, although these aspects have hardly been explored. Methods The aim of the present investigation is precisely to shed light on these latter issues. It is a prospective study, carried out in 256 healthcare workers in Spain during three time points in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic: (1) (T1) between 5 May and 21 June 2020 (final phase of the state of alarm declared in Spain on 14 March), (2) (T2) 6 months after the end of the state of alarm (January-April 2021), and (3) (T3) 1 year after this second evaluation (April-July 2022). The different components of burnout syndrome (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and self-fulfillment) were assessed at the second and third time points. Together with sociodemographic and occupational data (age, gender, professional category, years of experience, hours of work), anxiety, depression, stress, family support, friends' support, and self-efficacy were assessed at the first time point. At the second time point, cognitive fusion and resilience were assessed. At the third time point, optimism and hopelessness were assessed. Results The results show significant decreases in burnout syndrome (p < 0.001). However, when observing the evolution of each of the dimensions, it can be seen that emotional exhaustion has significantly decreased (p < 0.001), while an increase in depersonalization (p < 0.001) and a decrease in self-fulfillment (all p < 0.001) are observed. The results of the repeated measures General Linear Models, after controlling for the effect of the covariates show that the evolution of emotional exhaustion is associated with the levels of depression at T1 (p = 0.031), of cognitive fusion at T2 (p < 0.001) and of resilience at T2 (p = 0.039). The evolution of depersonalization is associated with levels of hopelessness at T2 (p = 0.042). Finally, the evolution of self- fulfillment is associated with levels of optimism at T3 (p = 0.043) and hopelessness at T3 (p = 0.019). Discussion The results highlight the need to attend to the three components of burnout in a differentiated manner. Our results indicate that, during the COVID-19 pandemic, although overall burnout levels tend to decrease, it is actually emotional exhaustion that decreases, but levels of depersonalization increase and self- fulfillment decreases. In addition, the data point to the different personality factors involved in each of the dimensions. While the evolution of emotional exhaustion seems to be more affected by the levels of symptomatology (i.e., depression) at the onset of the pandemic, and of the inability to handle intrusive thoughts (i.e., cognitive fusion), the evolution of depersonalization and self- fulfillment are more related to long-term cognitive-emotional personality variables such as optimism and hopelessness. Practical implications The results found have important practical implications for the prevention of each of the implicated components of the syndrome. Although further research is needed, emotional exhaustion is shown to be one of the dimensions affected in the short term and intervention programs aimed at reducing anxiety and depression at times of acute stress (onset of the COVID-19 pandemic), including thought management, seem fundamental. Depersonalization and decreased self-fulfillment do not seem to respond to the same pattern. They are shown as results of a chronification of a poor management of emotional exhaustion, and in the case of their appearance, given the variables associated with their evolution (i.e., optimism and hopelessness), therapies more focused on the meaning of existence, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, could be useful.

Abstract
The Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey (MBI-SS) is a widely used instrument to assess burnout levels, which provides valuable insight into their psychological well-being. Accurate measurement of burnout is crucial for developing interventions aimed at reducing stress and promoting mental health among students. This study aims to validate the MBI-SS when applied among Thai university students and to examine whether the psychometric properties of the scale are consistent with the original conceptual framework. A total of 413 undergraduate students from Thailand participated in the study, with 57.63% females and 42.37% males, and a mean age 21.75 years (SD = 2.40). The MBI-SS was translated into Thai by following rigorous procedures to maintain accuracy and cultural relevance. The factorial structure of the MBI-SS Thai version was evaluated using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) for both a three-factor model and second-order factor model. The Thai version of the MBI-SS demonstrated a three-dimensional structure consistent with the original inventory, with excellent model fit indices. All item factor loadings exceeded the recommended threshold, and the instrument showed high internal consistency, establishing it a valuable tool for future research and practical application in educational settings aimed at addressing and reducing student burnout.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Step 1 has historically been a major criterion to evaluate students for residency match. With Step 1 now being pass/fail (P/F), students are uncertain how to distinguish their applications. We aim to understand student's opinions surrounding the scoring change as this is the first class of students applying to residency in the P/F era. MATERIALS AND METHODS An electronic survey was sent to 3rd and 4th year American medical students. RESULTS Of the 255 students surveyed, 61.6% prefer Step 1 in the P/F format. Students applying for highly competitive specialties (HCS) preferred numerical scoring (55.6%). On a 5-point Likert scale, students entering HCS believed more strongly that they would have a better chance at matching if Step 1 was graded numerically (3.47 vs 2.71) and creates an unfair advantage for those who can afford to pursue a research year (3.46 vs 2.95). Students entering HCS felt finances played a significant role in whether they took a research year and felt added pressure to engage in research. Respondents believe that students from prestigious medical schools, well-connected students, and MD students will benefit most. CONCLUSIONS While students mostly prefer P/F scoring, there were differences of opinion between those going into HCS and LCS. Students indicated that those who have financial means are at a distinct advantage as they can afford to utilize a research year to distinguish their applications. Future efforts should be made to address student concerns and unintended consequences of the scoring change to create an equitable system.

Abstract
Individuals with dark personality traits are more prone to burnout, but this was not yet investigated in academia. Perfectionistic self-presentation (PSPS), an interpersonal expression of perfectionism, could be an explaining factor. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between the dark triad (Machiavellianism, vulnerable and grandiose narcissism, and psychopathy) and academic burnout, and whether the PSPS total score and its dimensions (perfectionistic self-promotion, nondisplay of imperfection, and nondisclosure of imperfection) mediates this. We expected that higher dark triad traits would be associated with higher academic burnout and that this would be explained by higher PSPS. Hypotheses included expectations for each PSPS dimension as well. Questionnaires were completed by 304 bachelor/master students (Mage = 22.81 years). Mediations were performed for each dark triad trait with total PSPS and each of its dimensions separately as mediator, and academic burnout as dependent variable. Total PSPS and almost all of its dimensions positively and significantly mediated the relation between Machiavellianism as well as psychopathy and academic burnout (small effect sizes). In contrast, only the PSPS dimension nondisplay of imperfection was a significant, positive mediator of the relation between grandiose narcissism and academic burnout (medium effect size). The other mediations with grandiose or vulnerable narcissism were non-significant. Future research should investigate this further, for instance by using the standard dark triad scales. Finally, this study offers insights for interventions and prevention of academic burnout by highlighting the unique impact of each dark triad trait. For example, those high on Machiavellianism may benefit from tools to deal with cynicism and perfectionism, ultimately lowering the risk for academic burnout.

Abstract
PURPOSE Research suggests that burnout can begin early in medical school, yet burnout among preclerkship students remains underexplored. This study aimed to characterize burnout signs, sources, coping strategies, and potential interventions among preclerkship students at one U.S. medical school. METHOD The authors conducted a qualitative study of preclerkship students at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine (MCASOM) in June 2019. Participants completed 2 Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) items (measuring frequency of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization) and 2 free-text questions on burnout before participating in 1 of 3 semistructured focus groups. Focus group questions were derived from a literature review on medical student burnout with input from the MCASOM Student Life and Wellness Committee. Group discussions were recorded, transcribed, coded inductively, and analyzed iteratively (along with free-text comments) using a general inductive approach from a constructivist perspective. RESULTS Eighteen of 111 eligible students (16%) participated, with 5/18 (28%) reporting weekly emotional exhaustion and/or depersonalization on MBI items. Analysis of focus group transcripts showed that most students had experienced burnout symptoms during their first or second year, corresponding with school-related stressors and manifesting in cognitive-emotional, physical, and verbal-behavioral ways. Students identified systemic, institutional, and individual burnout drivers and discussed how these drivers interacted (e.g., high standards of excellence at the system level interacted with anxiety and maladaptive thinking at the individual level, creating pressure to always do more). Students used various coping strategies (e.g., self-care, peer support, reframing, and compartmentalization) but emphasized limitations of these strategies and recommended interventions directed toward systemic and institutional burnout drivers. CONCLUSIONS This study offers insights into burnout signs and sources among preclerkship medical students that can inform future large-scale studies. Results suggest that burnout emerges from dynamic interactions among systemic, institutional, and individual factors and may benefit from multipronged interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Burnout, characterized by emotional exhaustion (EX), depersonalization (DP), and a reduced sense of personal efficacy (PF) among medical and nursing students can lead to suicidal ideation, lack of empathy, and dropouts. Previous studies have used over-simplified definitions of burnout that fail to capture its complexity. We describe the prevalence of burnout profiles and its risk factors among medical and nursing students. METHODS A cross sectional study was conducted at a tertiary care University Hospital in Pakistan. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) survey was disseminated via SurveyMonkey over a period of 4 months (November 2019 to February 2020) to 482 Medical and 441 nursing students. The MBI tool measures the dimensions of EX, DP, and PF to describe seven burnout profiles. Multivariable regression was used to identify predictors of burnout. RESULTS The response rate was 92% in nursing and 87.3% in medical students. The prevalence of burnout in medical and nursing students was 16.9% and 6.7% respectively (p<0.001), with 55.7% (n = 427) suffering from at least one burnout profile. Only 32.5% (n = 250) students felt engaged, (42.3% medical, 22.7% nursing students, p<0.001). The most common profile was ineffective (32.5%, n = 250), characterized by a reduced sense of personal efficacy (35.6% medical, 29.4% nursing students; p = 0.065). Medical students were at higher risk of burnout compared to nursing students (OR = 2.49 [1.42, 4.38]; p<0.001) with highest risk observed in year 4 (OR = 2.47 [1.02, 5.99]; p = 0.046). Other risk factors for burnout included occasional drug use (OR = 1.83 [1.21, 8.49]; p = 0.017) and living in a hostel (OR = 1.64 [1.01,2.67]; p = 0.233). CONCLUSION AND RELEVANCE Two-thirds of our participants experienced at least one dimension of burnout with the highest prevalence of a reduced sense of PF. Drivers of burnout unique to a lower-middle-income country need to be understood for effective interventions. Faculty training on principles of student evaluation and feedback may be beneficial.

Abstract
Purpose The present study aimed to further examine the factor structure and measurement invariance of the UDRQ among a sample of Hungarian university students. Methods Firstly, the factor structure of the UDRQ was examined among 837 Hungarian university students. Specifically, two measurement models (first-order model and second-order model) were constructed and compared. Secondly, the internal consistency reliability of the UDRQ was examined. Thirdly, measurement invariance of the UDRQ was evaluated across genders. Finally, measurement invariance of the UDRQ was evaluated across two different samples. Results It was found that the first-order model outperformed the second-order model and better represented the factor structure of the UDRQ subscales. Results of Cronbach's alpha and Composite Reliability suggested that the internal consistency reliabilities of the two UDRQ subscales were satisfactory. Measurement invariance analysis revealed that the UDRQ measurement model was strict invariant across genders and samples. Conclusion The findings of the present study indicated that the UDRQ displayed satisfactory reliability and validity and could be used to assess demands and resources of Hungarian university students.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Medical students, especially during the clinical years, are often exposed to breaches of safety and professionalism. These contradict personal and professional values exposing them to moral distress and to the dilemma of whether and how to act. Acting requires moral courage, i.e., overcoming fear to maintain one's core values and professional obligations. It includes speaking up and "doing the right thing" despite stressors and risks (e.g., humiliation). Acting morally courageously is difficult, and ways to enhance it are needed. Though moral courage efficacy, i.e., individuals' belief in their capability to act morally, might play a significant role, there is little empirical research on the factors contributing to students' moral courage efficacy. Therefore, this study examined the associations between perceived stress, academic burnout, and moral courage efficacy. METHODS A cross-sectional study among 239 medical students who completed self-reported questionnaires measuring perceived stress, academic burnout ('exhaustion,' 'cynicism,' 'reduced professional efficacy'), and moral courage efficacy (toward others' actions and toward self-actions). Data analysis via Pearson's correlations, regression-based PROCESS macro, and independent t-tests for group differences. RESULTS The burnout dimension of 'reduced professional efficacy' mediated the association between perceived stress and moral courage efficacy toward others' actions. The burnout dimensions 'exhaustion' and 'reduced professional efficacy' mediated the association between perceived stress and moral courage efficacy toward self-actions. CONCLUSIONS The results emphasize the importance of promoting medical students' well-being-in terms of stress and burnout-to enhance their moral courage efficacy. Medical education interventions should focus on improving medical students' professional efficacy since it affects both their moral courage efficacy toward others and their self-actions. This can help create a safer and more appropriate medical culture.

Abstract
The increase in responsibilities, together with the multiple challenges that students face in the university period, has a direct impact on their healthy lifestyles. This literature review describes the benefits of promoting healthy habits in college, highlighting the fundamental role of prevention and promotion. A systematic review was carried out following the PRISMA recommendations, searching for information in the WOS and Scopus databases. On the other hand, a search was carried out within the existing and available grey literature. The review focused on finding information about physical activity, nutrition, and stress (with an emphasis on resilience and academic burnout) in university students. This bibliographic review includes 32 articles and six web pages, containing information on the benefits of physical activity, healthy habits, and health prevention. The information collected in this study shows that university students are exposed to multiple changes during this period, increasing as the academic years progress. At that time, their habits worsen, with low adherence to the Mediterranean diet, low physical activity, and high levels of stress, specifically increasing cases of academic burnout. The establishment of healthy habits during the university period is necessary, observing an improvement in all the variables studied. Prevention has played a fundamental role.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Medical students represent the ideal target group for promoting mental health and mental wellbeing, being exposed to specific risk factors, such as the content of medical training, the exposure to sickness and death, and a stressful academic routine. Medical students report high levels of cynicism and emotional exhaustion, which represent two of the essential features of burnout syndrome. In this systematic review, studies assessing the levels of burnout among medical students through validated tools worldwide were analyzed. Materials and Methods: A systematic review has been performed in order to identify studies: (1) focusing on samples of medical students; (2) evaluating burnout syndrome using validated tools; (3) providing prevalence data on burnout; and (4) written in English. Results: Out of the 5547 papers initially obtained, 64 were finally included in the analysis. The sample sizes ranged from 51 to 2682 participants. Almost all studies had a cross-sectional design; the Maslach Burnout Inventory and its related versions were the most frequently used assessment tools. The prevalence of burnout, which was stratified based on gender and academic stage, ranged from 5.6 to 88%. Burnout was mostly predicted by thoughts of stopping medical education, negative life events, lack of support, dissatisfaction, and poor motivation. Conclusions: The prevalence of burnout syndrome in medical students is quite heterogeneous, reaching a peak of 88% in some countries. However, several predictors have been identified, including negative life events or poor motivation. These findings highlight the need to develop preventive interventions targeting the future generation of medical doctors, in order to improve their coping strategies and resilience styles.

Abstract
Although fruitful achievements have been explored about job burnout, little is known about burnout in the field of social interaction among college students. To address this limitation, this study defined the concept of Social Burnout and developed a measurement tool for it. The study adopted the method of combining qualitative research with quantitative research. After the qualitative study, we gathered examples of social burnout and finished item writing. Using convenient sampling and theoretical sampling methods, six different samples were recruited for reliability and validity testing. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) revealed the scale's two-factor structure: emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. Cronbach's alpha measured the internal consistency of the social burnout scale (SBS), which was excellent (Cronbach's alpha of emotional exhaustion = 0.94; depersonalization = 0.82; the overall = 0.92). Susequently, the method of calculating AVE and CR evaluated the scale's convergent and discriminant validity, which were relatively good (AVE of emotional exhaustion = 0.60, depersonalization = 0.59; CR of emotional exhaustion = 0.93, depersonalization = 0.81). Then, regression analysis verified the nomological network and criterion-related validity (r = -0.30, p < 0.01; r = -0.39, p < 0.01; β = -0.25, p < 0.01). The SBS was shown to be a reliable and appropriate measure for assessing students' social burnout. Furthermore, the SBS is recommended for use in academic research and by healthcare professionals to measure students' social distress. Further validation studies of this scale are needed in other cultural contexts.

Abstract
This study, which focuses on 227 participants (196 females and 31 males) comprising 187 clinical specialists and 40 surgical physicians, examines the prevalence of burnout in medical specialists. We investigate the effects of the emotional exhaustion (EE), Depersonalization (D), and personal accomplishment (PA) dimensions on professional satisfaction and plans to change careers using the modified licensed Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS (MP)). High emotional exhaustion is reported by 52.63% of men and 71.28% of women in the clinical medicine group (n = 188). In the surgical specialties (n = 39), scores are significantly higher, with 75% of men and 77.77% of women reporting EE. In our sample group, 71.36% express high levels of emotional exhaustion, with similar patterns across specialization and gender. Clinical medicine respondents report high degrees of depersonalization in 33.13% of females and 21.05% of males, while surgical specialty respondents report high levels in 33.33% of females and 50% of males. Across genders and specializations, 33.03% of all respondents show high levels of depersonalization. Clinical medicine participants report high levels of personal accomplishment (42.60% of females and 42.10% of males), whereas surgical specialties report 44.44% of females and 66.66% of male on the PA dimension. Of the total number of respondents, 44.05% report having a high level of personal accomplishment; differences exist depending on specialty and gender. In addition, questions regarding professional fulfilment and intention to change careers were presented to the participants. A total of 53.40% (16 male and 105 female) of the clinical medicine respondents said they intended to change careers, while 33 participants (9 male, 34 female) doubted if they would remain in the same specialization. Furthermore, 86 individuals (9 male and 77 female) in the surgical specialties said they would never choose to work in healthcare again. Regression analysis suggests that being male, higher in age, and working in surgical specialties with lower job satisfaction and a higher intention to change profession are associated with higher levels of EE. Age and work satisfaction are significant predictors of depersonalization, and higher career satisfaction is associated with increased levels of PA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Burnout is frequent among physicians and seems to be underestimated among rheumatologists. OBJECTIVE To estimate the frequency of burnout in a sample of rheumatologists practising in the Arab countries and determine its associated factors. METHODS This was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted by the Arab League of Associations for Rheumatology (ArLAR research group) using an anonymous electronic questionnaire set up on the Google Forms platform. All Arab rheumatologists and rheumatology fellows were invited to participate in the spring of 2022 via ArLAR social media accounts, societies' WhatsApp groups, and mass emails. Burnout was defined by at least one positive domain of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) (Emotional exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Personal accomplishment). The final score was correlated to socio-demographic factors using a multivariable binary logistic regression. RESULTS The study included 445 rheumatologists and rheumatology fellows with an average age of 45.2 years (SD 11.5); 61.8% were men. The frequency of burnout among rheumatologists was 61.3% and was driven by low personal accomplishment scores (58.1%). Younger age (OR 1.92 (95%CI 1.20-3.08)), dissatisfaction with the specialty (OR 2.036 (95% CI 1.20-3.46)), and low income (OR 2.26 (95% CI 1.01-5.10)) were associated with burnout. CONCLUSION The frequency of burnout in a sample of rheumatologists in Arab countries is very high, driven by low personal accomplishment scores and associated with a low income, dissatisfaction with the specialty and younger age. Some associated factors might be modifiable, thus reducing the burden of burnout on rheumatologists and on the healthcare system. Key Points • The frequency of burnout in a sample of Arab rheumatologists was 61.3% according to the MBI. • The score was mainly driven by low personal accomplishment scores (58.1%). • Younger age, dissatisfaction with the specialty, and low income were associated with burnout. • Acting upon modifiable risk factors would help reducing the burden of burnout on rheumatologists and on the healthcare system.

Abstract
Current literature validates the magnitude of physician burnout as a complex challenge affecting physicians, patients, and healthcare delivery that mandates science-informed intervention. Physician burnout affects both individual practitioners and patient care delivery. Interventions, defined as roadmaps, to prioritizing and supporting personal wellbeing encompass organizational, individual, and moral injury, with virtually no consensus on optimal approaches. The purpose of this conceptual review is to present evidence-based innovative insights on contributing factors, mitigation, and designing adaptive systems to combat and prevent burnout. Science-informed policy initiatives that support long-term organizational changes endorsed by both leadership and institutional stakeholders are keys to sustaining personal wellbeing and ending burnout.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether emergency staff and students can predict patient outcome within 24 hours of admission, comparing the accuracy of clinician prognostication with outcome prediction by Acute Patient Physiologic and Laboratory Evaluation (APPLE)fast scoring and identifying whether experience or mood would be associated with accuracy. DESIGN Prospective observational study between April 2020 and March 2021. SETTING University teaching hospital. ANIMALS One hundred and sixty-one dogs admitted through an Emergency Service were assessed. Where data were available, an APPLEfast score was calculated per patient. An APPLEfast score of >25 was deemed a predictor for mortality. INTERVENTIONS None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Emergency staff and students were asked to complete surveys about dogs admitted to the emergency room. All clinicopathological data were available for review, and the animals were available for examination. Data collected included opinions on whether the patient would be discharged from hospital, a mood score, position, and experience in Emergency and Critical Care. One-hundred and twenty-five dogs (77.6%) were discharged; 36 dogs (22.4%) died or were euthanized. Two hundred and sixty-six responses were obtained; 202 responses (75.9%) predicted the correct outcome. Students, interns, residents, faculty, and nurses predicted the correct outcome in 81.4%, 58.3%, 83.3%, 82.1%, and 65.5% of cases, respectively. Of 64 incorrect predictions, 43 (67.2%) predicted death in hospital. APPLEfast scores were obtained in 121 cases, predicting the correct outcome in 83 cases (68.6%). Of 38 cases in which APPLEfast was incorrect, 27 (71.1%) were dogs surviving to discharge. Mean APPLEfast score was 22.9 (± 6.2). There was no difference in outcome prediction accuracy between staff and APPLEfast scores (P = 0.13). Neither experience nor mood score was associated with outcome prediction ability (P = 0.55 and P = 0.74, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Outcome prediction accuracy by staff is not significantly different to APPLEfast scoring where a cutoff of >25 is used to predict mortality. When predictions were incorrect, they often predicted nonsurvival.

Abstract
Background The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) is the most widely accepted tool for assessing burnout among students worldwide. However, no studies have yet tested the validity of the student version of the MBI in Nigeria. The study aimed to assess the factorial structure and cross-cultural validity of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Version MBI-GS (S) in a Nigerian university. Methodology An online cross-sectional study was conducted among 536 undergraduate students from three departments in the Faculty of Basic Medical Science at a Nigerian university. Data were collected using MBI-GS (S) and a confirmatory factor analysis was performed to explore its factor structure. Results The results revealed that the three-factor, 15-item structure of the MBI-GS (S) demonstrated a valid factorial structure among Nigerian undergraduate students, evidenced by the extraction of three components with eigen values exceeding 1, accounting for 73.7% of the variance, in line with the three-factor structure of the original MBI. The internal consistency of the questionnaire was high, with a Cronbach's alpha value of 0.901. The Cronbach's alpha for emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and academic efficacy were 0.901, 0.841, and 0.941, respectively. A weak negative correlation was observed between emotional exhaustion and cynicism, and a moderate negative correlation was found between emotional exhaustion and academic efficacy, and cynicism and academic efficacy. Conclusions These findings suggest that the MBI-GS (S) is a reliable tool for assessing burnout levels among Nigerian university students. They provide strong evidence for the factorial validity and reliability of the MBI-GS (S), supporting its cross-cultural validation for assessing burnout.

Abstract
Objective After the end of COVID-19, medical staff were immediately faced with a high workload, leading to widespread occupational burnout. This study aims to explore the level and influencing factors of burnout among medical staff during this period, as well as its relationship with anxiety and depression. Methods The participants' levels of burnout were assessed using Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS), and the reliability and validity of the questionnaire were evaluated through Cronbach's α and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). Independent sample t-test, chi-square test, and Pearson analysis were employed to determine the correlation between two sets of variables. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify significant factors influencing burnout. Finally, nomograms were used to predict the probability of burnout occurrence. Results This study collected a total of 1,550 questionnaires, and after excluding 45 questionnaires that were duplicates or incomplete, a sample of 1,505 (97.1%) participants were included in the final statistical analysis. Both Cronbach's α and the fit indices of CFA demonstrated excellent adaptability of the Chinese version of MBI-HSS in this study. The overall prevalence rates for emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and diminished personal accomplishment (PA) were 52.4, 55.3, and 30.6%, respectively. Obtaining psychological support, health condition, relationship with family members, and insufficient sleep were identified as common contributing factors to burnout among medical staff. Additionally, age and promotion pressure were also associated with burnout among doctors, and exceeding legal working hours was an important factor for nurse burnout. The C-index for the nomograms predicting burnout among doctors and nurses was 0.832 and 0.843, respectively. Furthermore, burnout exhibited a significant linear correlation with anxiety and depression. Conclusion After the end of COVID-19, medical staff in high workload environments were facing severe burnout, which might lead to anxiety and depression. The occupational burnout of medical staff needed to be taken seriously and actively intervened.

Abstract
Background Burnout is highly prevalent among medical students. This study aimed to assess burnout levels over the course of a semester and identify variables that might explain burnout's variance over time. Method This longitudinal study involved medical students from a Portuguese school. Participants completed the Maslach Burnout Inventory and Mental Health Inventory-5, along with questions related to social support, help-seeking behaviours, academic performance, mental health and lifestyle assessment at the beginning (first phase), middle (second phase) and end (third phase) of the first semester of 2018-2019 academic year. Results A total of 108 participants provided responses in all phases (paired sample). The prevalence of burnout in the first phase was 28.2%, which increased to 34% in the second and 39.5% in the third. To explore factors contributing to burnout levels, we used the 332 responses obtained in the third phase (non-paired sample). Higher burnout levels were associated with poor academic performance, mental health stigma, consumption of tranquillisers and living away from home. Conversely, they were negatively associated with social support and a healthy lifestyle. Conclusions The study reveals a high prevalence of burnout among medical students, with burnout levels increasing throughout the semester. These levels are influenced by modifiable variables.

Abstract
This study aims to examine the relationship between burnout and dentists' intentions to change careers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The MBI-Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel-MBI-HSS (MP) was used to measure burnout levels and investigate how they relate to dentists' intentions to change their profession. The sample included 69 Romanian dentists, 56 of whom were women and 13 of whom were men. Self-reported questionnaires provided to the participants were used to collect the data. Female participants reported higher levels of emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalisation than males. However, there were no substantial differences in Personal Accomplishment levels between genders. As for the intentions to change careers, 41 expressed a clear intention to change their profession, 15 were still determining if they would choose the same speciality, and 28 indicated they would not choose the medical field. The study's findings provide insight into how dentists' thoughts about perceived burnout during the COVID-19 pandemic significantly influenced their attitudes regarding their career paths. The results suggest concerns regarding burnout in the dental field and emphasise the necessity for burnout interventions and support services, particularly during healthcare crises. Further research and interventions to mitigate burnout and promote well-being among dentists are needed to ensure the sustainability and quality of dental healthcare services in Romania.

Abstract
In recent years, there has been increasing recognition of mental health concerns in academia, with stress, burnout, anxiety, and depression being reported among faculty members. The demanding work environment, the need to balance personal and professional duties, and the constant pressure of productivity while navigating multiple tasks of teaching, research, mentorship, professional development, and service all impact the mental health and overall well-being of faculty. Higher education institutions have structurally changed as has the research landscape. These changes as well as faculty-specific and student-specific factors coupled to the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic have led to profound effects on the mental health of academics. This paper is a narrative review of the pertinent literature describing faculty mental health and well-being. It summarizes the available evidence on factors influencing faculty mental health and shows the prevalence of anxiety, depression, stress, and burnout among faculty from various academic fields and along the whole academic ladder. Using a suggested framework that collates the efforts of leaders and faculty, the paper concludes by exploring strategies that promote work-life balance among academics and suggesting effective interventions to improve their mental health outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Student burnout during medical education is a prevalent and critical problem. Burnout has reaching consequences, including negative health outcomes for students, financial loss for schools, and worsened patient care as students transition to practice. Global Health Outreach Experiences (GHOEs), known to enhance cultural awareness and clinical knowledge among medical students, are offered in most programs. Prior studies document that GHOEs benefit physicians suffering from burnout, with effects demonstrating improvement over 6 months. No study, to our knowledge, has assessed the influence GHOEs may have on medical student burnout with a comparable control group. This study examines whether participation in a GHOE, compared to a standard break from school, has a positive effect on burnout. METHODS A case control study utilizing the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory was conducted on medical students. 41 students participated in a one-week, spring break GHOE and 252 were randomly selected as non-participating students in a control group. Assessments were gathered 1 week prior, 1 week after, and 10 weeks after spring break. Response across the surveys in chronological order included 22, 20, 19 GHOE and 70, 66, 50 control participants. RESULTS A significant reduction in personal burnout (PB) (P = 0.0161), studies related burnout (SRB) (P = 0.0056), and colleagues related burnout (CRB) (P = 0.0357) was found among GHOE attendees compared to control participants at 10-weeks after spring break. When modeled with potential confounders, CRB and SRB reductions remained significant. CONCLUSION GHOEs may be a potential tool for institutions to combat burnout rates in their students. The benefits of GHOEs appear to enhance over time.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The unequal distribution of academic and professional outcomes between different minority groups is a pervasive issue in many fields, including surgery. The implications of differential attainment remain significant, not only for the individuals affected but also for the wider health care system. An inclusive health care system is crucial in meeting the needs of an increasingly diverse patient population, thereby leading to better outcomes. One barrier to diversifying the workforce is the differential attainment in educational outcomes between Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) and White medical students and doctors in the United Kingdom. BME trainees are known to have lower performance rates in medical examinations, including undergraduate and postgraduate exams, Annual Review of Competence Progression, as well as training and consultant job applications. Studies have shown that BME candidates have a higher likelihood of failing both parts of the Membership of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons exams and are 10% less likely to be considered suitable for core surgical training. Several contributing factors have been identified; however, there has been limited evidence investigating surgical training experiences and their relationship to differential attainment. To understand the nature of differential attainment in surgery and to develop effective strategies to address it, it is essential to examine the underlying causes and contributing factors. The Variation in Experiences and Attainment in Surgery Between Ethnicities of UK Medical Students and Doctors (ATTAIN) study aims to describe and compare the factors and outcomes of attainment between different ethnicities of doctors and medical students. OBJECTIVE The primary aim will be to compare the effect of experiences and perceptions of surgical education of students and doctors of different ethnicities. METHODS This protocol describes a nationwide cross-sectional study of medical students and nonconsultant grade doctors in the United Kingdom. Participants will complete a web-based questionnaire collecting data on experiences and perceptions of surgical placements as well as self-reported academic attainment data. A comprehensive data collection strategy will be used to collect a representative sample of the population. A set of surrogate markers relevant to surgical training will be used to establish a primary outcome to determine variations in attainment. Regression analyses will be used to identify potential causes for the variation in attainment. RESULTS Data collected between February 2022 and September 2022 yielded 1603 respondents. Data analysis is yet to be competed. The protocol was approved by the University College London Research Ethics Committee on September 16, 2021 (ethics approval reference 19071/004). The findings will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. CONCLUSIONS Drawing upon the conclusions of this study, we aim to make recommendations on educational policy reforms. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Previous studies have shown that medical students experience a great level of burnout and poor well-being during their clinical training periods. In this study, we sought to understand how military medical students cope with stress to prevent burnout and support their well-being. We also investigated if these coping strategies are associated with military medical students' self-reported well-being, burnout, and depression levels. The findings could help inform programming, resources, and educational strategies to better support students to thrive in their careers long term. METHODS Using a cross-sectional research design, we surveyed military medical students and conducted content analysis on participant responses to the open-ended item by trained coders. Coding was based on the existing coping theory frameworks as well as categories that emerged inductively to represent the data. RESULTS The primary four strategies military medical students utilized included social connection (59.9%), exercise (58.3%), personal relaxation (36%), and work-life balance (15.7%). The use of work-life balance strategy was significantly associated with more positive well-being and lower depression compared to those who did not use this strategy. Three main coping typologies were further extracted, including personal care, connection, and cognitive strategies. Based on the typologies, 62% of students were recognized as multi-type copers (who combined more than two coping typologies), who reported significantly more positive well-being compared to students who relied on a single typology. CONCLUSIONS The findings demonstrate that certain coping strategies are more positively associated with a good state of well-being and less burnout, and that utilization of multiple types of coping strategies is more supportive. This study amplifies the voice of military medical students concerning the importance of prioritizing self-care and available resources given the unique pressures and demands of their dual military medical curriculum.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Shortly after the World Health Organization declared the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak a worldwide pandemic, medical school governing bodies issued guidance recommending pausing clinical rotations. Prior to the availability of COVD-19 vaccines, many schools implemented exclusively online curriculums in the didactic and clinical years. These unprecedented events and paradigm changes in medical education could contribute to trainee burnout, wellness, and mental health. METHODS This single-institution study interviewed first, second, and third-year medical students from a medical school in the southwestern United States. A semi-structured interview was conducted with paper-based Likert scale questions rating perceived happiness were administered both at the time of the interview and one year later in order to understand how their student experience and happiness were impacted. In addition, we asked participants to describe any major life events they experienced since the first interview. RESULTS Twenty-seven volunteers participated in the original interview. Twenty-four from the original cohort participated in the one-year follow-up. Happiness as a sense of self and who you "should be" was challenged during the pandemic and changes in happiness over time were not systematic across classes. Stress was caused not only by the pandemic which was experienced by all, but by a tripartite state of individual circumstances, academic workload requirements, and the world at large. Primary themes from the interviews were clustered around the individual, learner, and future professional levels and focused on the primacy of relationships, emotional wellness, stress management, professional identity, and impacts of educational disruptions. These themes created risk factors for developing imposter syndrome. Students demonstrated resiliency across cohorts and were able to utilize a variety of strategies to achieve and maintain both physical and mental health, but the primacy of relationships both personally and professionally was noted. CONCLUSION Medical students' identities as individual persons, a learner, and future medical professionals were all impacted by the pandemic. The results from this study suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic and changes in the learning format and environment may create a new risk factor in the development of imposter syndrome. There is also an opportunity to re-consider resources to achieve and maintain wellness during a disrupted academic environment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physician burnout is a common problem, with onset frequently occurring during undergraduate education. Early intervention strategies that train medical students in psychological flexibility skills could support well-being and mitigate burnout risks associated with unmodifiable career stressors. There is a need for randomized controlled trials to assess effectiveness. As psychological flexibility varies contextually and among individuals, tailoring interventions may improve outcomes. Smartphone apps can facilitate individualization and accessibility, and the evaluation of this approach is an identified research priority. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a stand-alone app-delivered Acceptance and Commitment Training intervention for improving medical students' self-reported burnout, well-being, psychological flexibility, and psychological distress outcomes. We aimed to explore whether an individualized app would demonstrate benefits over a nonindividualized version. METHODS This parallel randomized controlled trial was conducted with a sample of medical students from 2 Australian universities (N=143). Participants were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 intervention arms (individualized, nonindividualized, and waitlist) using a 1:1:1 allocation ratio. Individualized and nonindividualized participants were blinded to group allocation. The 5-week intervention included an introductory module (stage 1) and on-demand access to short skill training activities (stage 2), which students accessed at their own pace. Stage 2 was either nonindividualized or individualized to meet students' identified psychological flexibility training needs. RESULTS The mean differences in change from baseline between the intervention groups and the waitlist group were not statistically significant for burnout outcomes: exhaustion (primary; individualized: -0.52, 95% CI -3.70 to 2.65, P=.75; nonindividualized: 1.60, 95% CI -1.84 to 5.03, P=.37), cynicism (individualized: -1.26, 95% CI -4.46 to 1.94, P=.44; nonindividualized: 1.00, 95% CI -2.45 to 4.46, P=.57), and academic efficacy (individualized: 0.94, 95% CI -0.90 to 2.79, P=.32; nonindividualized: 2.02, 95% CI 0.02-4.03, P=.05). Following the intervention, the individualized group demonstrated improved psychological flexibility (0.50, 95% CI 0.12-0.89; P=.01), reduced inflexibility (0.48, 95% CI -0.92 to -0.04; P=.04), and reduced stress (-6.89, 95% CI -12.01 to 5.99; P=.01), and the nonindividualized group demonstrated improved well-being (6.46, 95% CI 0.49-12.42; P=.04) and stress (-6.36, 95% CI -11.90 to -0.83; P=.03) compared with waitlist participants. Between-group differences for the individualized and nonindividualized arms were not statistically significant. High attrition (75/143, 52.4%) was observed. CONCLUSIONS This trial provides early support for the potential benefits of Acceptance and Commitment Training for medical student well-being and psychological outcomes and demonstrates that psychological flexibility and inflexibility can be trained using a smartphone app. Although postintervention burnout outcomes were not statistically significant, improvements in secondary outcomes could indicate early risk mitigation. Replication studies with larger samples and longer-term follow-up are required, and future research should focus on improving implementation frameworks to increase engagement and optimize individualization methods. Interventions that facilitate adaptive coping behaviors (eg, Psychological Flexibility) in the context of inherent stressors associated with medical training could mitigate burnout risk and improve well-being. Delivering these interventions using smartphone apps offers advantages such as accessibility, scalability, mitigation of time and stigma barriers, and facilitation of individual tailoring (individualization). There is a need for feasibility trials with medical students in this emerging field. Formal evaluations of user experiences of app-based psychological skill training are required to identify barriers to and facilitators of engagement and optimize intervention development before implementation in efficacy trials and real-world settings. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the feasibility of delivering an individualized Psychological Flexibility skill training intervention (Acceptance and Commitment Training [ACTraining]) to medical students using an app-based delivery format. We further aimed to explore how formal evaluation of user experiences might inform and guide the development of this app before implementation in an efficacy trial and future research involving app-delivered psychological skill training for medical students. METHODS This single-arm study was an early-phase feasibility trial of a stand-alone ACTraining app conducted with a sample of Australian medical students (n=11). We collected app usability and user experience data across a broad range of domains (eg, perceived helpfulness and relevance, learning experiences, and self-efficacy) using self-report questionnaires (quantitative and qualitative) and behavioral engagement outcomes. RESULTS Behavioral engagement data demonstrated that the app delivered the assessment procedures and individualized ACTraining intervention to medical students as intended. The subjective feedback provided by students who actively engaged with the app was generally positive across several indicators, including usability, perceived relevance and helpfulness, accessibility, maintenance of privacy, and opportunity for self-reflection. Disengagement from the app was an identified challenge throughout the trial. Participant feedback identified several factors that may have affected engagement, such as time, expectations regarding app interface functioning, and individual differences in confidence and self-efficacy when implementing skills. CONCLUSIONS This study reports user experience data that have been largely absent from the literature on digital psychological interventions for medical students. Our findings demonstrate the preliminary feasibility of an app-delivered ACTraining intervention for medical student well-being and burnout and support the value of future assessment of the efficacy of this approach with larger samples. We consider subjective feedback from medical students in relation to observed engagement and propose how this information might be used to inform the development of this app and future research in this nascent field.

Introduction: Academic burnout is emerging as an essential obstacle in education process. Students of the most challenging fields of study with high degrees of stress are thought to be at the highest risk. Medical studies are considered one of them. The aim of the study was to measure the levels of academic burnout, stress and gratitude among Polish medical students of Medical University of Lublin, and determine their styles of coping with stress.
Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a questionnaire comprised of the following: Maslach Burnout Inventory – Student Survey (MBI-SS), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (SES), a Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS) and a Gratitude Questionnaire Six-Item form (GQ-6). The data was obtained from 773 medical students.
Results: Total number of 169 students (21.86%) met criteria for academic burnout. When it comes to 354 participants, they displayed signs of low self-esteem (45.8%). The number of 18 students showed low level of gratitude, while gratitude level of the majority of them – 496 (64.17%) was high. The most common style of coping with stress was emotions-oriented style – 354 students (48.29%), followed by task-oriented style – 345 students (47.07%). Burnout subscales turned out to be associated with age, year of study, self-esteem, gratitude and different styles of coping with stress to the various extent.
Conclusions: The prevalence of academic burnout among Polish medical students is high compared with general population across various occupations. Utilisation of protective characteristics of high self-esteem, gratitude and healthy coping methods can result in development of efficient anti-burnout prevention strategies and intervention tools.

Abstract
Burnout is highly prevalent among nurses; however, the effect of personalized music intervention on burnout remains unclear on nurses. We aimed to investigate the effects of personalized music intervention in relieving burnout among nurses. Forty-two eligible nurses were recruited for an assessor-blinded, two-arm parallel randomized controlled trial. The participants were randomly assigned to the following two groups: The personalized music group (n = 21), which listened to music of their choice for 30 min per session three times per week for 5 weeks; and the wait-list control group (n = 21), which did not listen to any music for relaxation. At baseline, nurses in the personalized music group had worse emotional exhaustion and greater depression compared with the wait-list control group. Results from an analysis of covariance using baseline emotional exhaustion and depression as covariates indicated that nurses who received personalized music intervention experienced less emotional exhaustion than the nurses in the wait-list control experienced. Personalized music intervention can be used for nurses as an adjuvant approach to reduce emotional exhaustion and then improve their well-being.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Medical students are at a significant risk of experiencing psychological issues, such as burnout. Over the past few years, more studies have been conducted on this topic, producing different results. AIMS The purpose of this review was to determine the global pooled prevalence rate and risk factors associated with burnout and its components among undergraduate (pre-intern) medical students. METHOD From inception until 30 November 2021, nine electronic databases were used for an electronic search. Using random-effects meta-analysis, we pooled the estimates using the DerSimonian-Laird method. The prevalence of burnout in medical students was the primary outcome of interest. Data were analyzed globally, by country, by research measure. Age and sex were examined as confounders using meta-regression analysis. RESULTS A random-effects meta-analysis of 42 studies involving 26,824 evaluating the prevalence of burnout in medical students showed an overall prevalence rate 37.23% [32.66%; 42.05%], Q = 2,267.15(41), p < .0001, τ2 = .42, τ = .65, I2 = 98.2%; H = 7.5. Prevalence of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment were 38.08% [30.67%; 46.10%], 35.07% [26.74%; 44.41%], and 37.23% [32.66%; 42.05%], respectively. Variations were observed between countries and research measures. Age (older) and sex (female) were both significant predictors of burnout. CONCLUSION The prevalence of burnout in medical students was estimated to be 37.23%. It is urgent that future studies serve as a basis for the development of prevention and treatment programs to prevent and treat burnout in students.

Abstract
COVID-19 has presented a substantial burden on students and healthcare staff. This mixed-method, descriptive and correlational study aimed to: 1) describe academic; and 2) professional burnout levels; 3) their associations with working in COVID-19-related care; and 4) with perceived COVID-19 impact on studies and internships among medical students and residents. We hypothesized burnout levels to be high; those involved in COVID-19 care to experience higher impact of COVID-19 on studies and work, and to experience higher levels of academic and professional burnout than those not involved in COVID-19 care; academic and professional burnout to be higher when perceived burden due to COVID-19 was higher. During first lockdown in Belgium, a mixed-method cross-sectional survey assessed academic burnout (MBI-SS) and professional burnout in relation to internships and residency (MBI-HSS). Correlations and t-tests tested associations of burnout with involvement in COVID-19-related care and perceived impact of COVID-19 on studies and work (SPSS). Participants provided open-ended comments which were thematically analysed (NVivo). In total, 194 medical students and residents participated (79.5% female, M age = 24.9 ± 2.5). Emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation were high in professional burnout, but moderate in academic burnout. Those involved in COVID-19 related care perceived a higher impact of COVID-19 on their studies and internship/residency and have higher professional burnout, but do not show a higher academic burnout. Those who have a higher perceived impact of COVID-19 on their studies scored higher on academic burnout. Participants mentioned an increased workload (e.g., having to be constantly available and constantly adapt), distress (e.g., uncertainty, fatigue, fear for impact on significant others), fewer learning opportunities (e.g., cancelled internships, changing learning methods), lack of relatedness with patients and supervisors (e.g., lack of respect and understanding from supervisors, distance created by phone consultations with patients) and cynicism towards remote care or non-medical tasks (e.g., considering what they do is not useful or not what they trained for). Students and residents showed indications of professional and academic burnout in relation to the COVID-19 situation. Interventions are needed that can meet the needs of achieving learning outcomes, managing extreme situations and relatedness.

Abstract
Introduction We aim to compare the experience of medical students at higher- versus lower-ranked medical schools in terms of levels of competition, feelings of animosity amongst students, emphasis on subspecialty choice, and the influence of financial situation on choice of residency specialty. Methods Students at randomly chosen medical schools were contacted via email and administered a 10-question survey assessing levels of burn out, peer relations, and school pressures on career choice. Results Perceptions of adverse competition were higher in the non-top-45 cohort. Pressure to pursue subspecialty training was higher in the top-45 cohort. Discussion Medical school reputation appears to be inversely correlated with symptoms of animosity amongst peers, and these findings should be evaluated for downstream ramifications.

Abstract
Background Burnout among millennial medical students is an important health issue with a possibility of potential professional dissatisfaction. The reason for burnout is multifactorial. The gender of the medical student may play a significant role when choosing a residency specialty and making a career choice. Gender may also influence while establishing the burnout seen in students. Here we tested the association between burnout in medical students based on gender and residency specialty choice during COVID-19. Methods A multicentric cross-sectional study, using a questionnaire-based survey on the items related to gender, educational interest, status, residency aspiration, changes to career aspiration based on gender, and COVID-19 and an indigenous burnout assessment tool that was administered to all the medical students in the study. Reliability and validity of the tool were assessed, and the burnout was calculated for emotional exhaustion, personal achievement, and depersonalization domain. Results A total of 487 medical students (42.5% males, 57.2% females) completed the survey. A higher number of female participants felt that COVID-19 affected their energy levels (68.9%), interest in education (53.2%), and developed reservations about residency specialty of choice (46%); emotional and physical exhaustion (2.88 ± 0.69 & 2.34 ± 0.76) was higher than the male participants (3.16 ± 0.67 & 2.75 ± 0.85). Conclusion More female participants experienced emotional distress, depersonalization or professional disengagement, and psychological and physical stress and exhaustion due to the COVID-19 pandemic. An important association observed in the study was between residency choice and burnout. Abstract
The primary aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of burnout in Romanian medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey for Students (MBI-GS(S)). The presence of burnout was assessed based on Exhaustion (EX), Cynicism (CY) and Professional Efficacy (PE) subscales. The secondary aim of the study was to identify the presence of intentional shift in medical specialty compared to their initial pursued choice within the population investigated. Data was collected online at the end of 2020 and beginning of 2021 through a licensed, customized MBI-GS(S) questionnaire from a sample of 126 Romanian medical students at the two leading medical schools in the country, Iasi (N = 56) and Cluj Napoca (N = 70). Descriptive statistics and bivariate correlations were also applied to describe the data set (age and gender of participants) and the relationship between variables (EX, CY, PE). Subsequently, the MBI-GS(S) group report revealed that 36.5% of the medical students in the sample (46) experienced burnout, with problematic results both in Exhaustion and Cynicism. Exhaustion and Cynicism, which contribute to burnout, showed high scores compared to the average scale (EX = 3.5/2.4; CY = 2.8/1.8), while the Professional Efficacy score was relatively high (PE = 3.8/4.4), showing a protective effect and burnout reduction. One of the main conclusions is that the consequences of burnout in medical students plays a significant role in shaping the future healthcare practitioners’ perception of the medical profession and of patients’ wellbeing. Exhaustion and Cynicism are mainly associated with depersonalization and disconnection from the patient. Another conclusion of the study is that about one third of the respondents (30% Cluj students and 37.5% Iasi students) considered changing residency options. The pandemic has also revealed the limitations of and challenges facing current medical education, and that further research is required to assess the trends in prevalence of burnout in medical students.

BACKGROUND Medical student burnout is a prevalent problem with adverse long-term outcomes. Incorporating psychological resource-building interventions into comprehensive burnout prevention approaches during medical training is an identified priority among educators. These interventions could reduce burnout risk by buffering students against nonmodifiable career stressors. However, there is a need for rigorous investigation into optimal intervention targets and methods. Psychological flexibility (PF) is an adaptive behavioral skill set that has demonstrated relationships with medical student burnout and well-being. More broadly, there is evidence that PF mediates burnout and well-being outcomes and may be a protective factor. Efficacy studies assessing the benefits of interventions targeting PF among medical students are needed. Research also supports the need to establish optimal methods for increasing intervention efficacy in the context of individual differences in burnout and PF by using individualized approaches. OBJECTIVE This study aims to assess whether an app-delivered PF intervention (Acceptance and Commitment Training) reduces burnout and improves well-being among medical students. We will examine whether changes in burnout and well-being are mediated by changes in PF. The potential benefits of an individualized version of the app versus those of a nonindividualized version will also be evaluated. METHODS In this 3-arm, parallel, randomized controlled study, a sample of medical students will be randomly allocated to 1 of 3 intervention arms (individualized, nonindividualized, and waiting list) by using a 1:1:1 allocation ratio. Participants in the individualized and nonindividualized intervention arms will have 5 weeks to access the app, which includes a PF concepts training session (stage 1) and access to short PF skill activities on demand (stage 2). Stage 2 will be either individualized to meet participants' identified PF training needs at each log-in or nonindividualized. RESULTS Burnout, well-being, and PF will be assessed at baseline and after the intervention. Quantitative analyses will include descriptive and inferential statistics. We hypothesize that the Acceptance and Commitment Training intervention app will be effective in improving burnout and well-being and that changes in these outcomes will be mediated by changes in PF. We further hypothesize that participants in the individualized intervention group will demonstrate greater improvements in burnout and well-being outcomes than those in the nonindividualized group. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study could guide the development of burnout prevention and well-being initiatives for medical students. Identifying PF as a mediating process would provide support for the delivery of preventive intervention programs that train individuals to strengthen this psychological resource before burnout symptoms emerge. This would be an important step in addressing and potentially offsetting the significant costs of burnout among medical students and physicians. Demonstrating the superiority of an individualized version of the app over a nonindividualized version would have implications for enhancing intervention precision and efficacy by using scalable interventions. Abstract
Rationale & Objective Burnout decreases job satisfaction and leads to poor patient outcomes but remains underinvestigated in nephrology. We explored the prevalence and determinants of burnout among a sample of nephrologists. Study Design Cross-sectional. Setting & Participants The nephrologists were approached via the American Medical Association Physicians Masterfile, National Kidney Foundation listserv, email, and social media between April and August 2019. The predictors were demographics and practice characteristics. The outcome was burnout, defined as responding “once a week” or more on either 1 of the 2 validated measures of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization or both. Analytical Approach Participant characteristics were tabulated. Responses were compared using χ2 tests. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) of burnout for risk factors. Free text responses were thematically analyzed. Results About half of 457 respondents were 40-59 years old (n=225; 49.2%), and the respondents were more predominantly men (n=296; 64.8%), US medical graduates (n=285; 62.4%), and in academic practice (n=286; 62.6%). Overall, 106 (23.2%) reported burnout. The most commonly reported primary drivers of burnout were the number of hours worked (n=27; 25.5%) and electronic health record requirements (n=26; 24.5%). Caring for ≤25 versus 26-75 patients per week (OR, 0.34; 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 0.15-0.77), practicing in academic versus nonacademic settings (OR, 0.33; 95% CI, 0.21-0.54), and spending time on other responsibilities versus patient care (OR, 0.32; 95% CI, 0.17-0.61) were each independently associated with nearly 70% lower odds of burnout after adjusting for age, sex, race, and international medical graduate status. The free text responses emphasized disinterested health care systems and dissatisfaction with remuneration as the drivers of burnout. Limitations Inability to precisely capture response rate. Conclusions Nearly one-quarter of the nephrologists in our sample reported burnout. Future studies should qualitatively investigate how the care setting, time spent on electronic medical records, and hours of clinical care drive burnout and explore other system-level drivers of burnout in nephrology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Burnout syndrome is a frequent syndrome related to people that feel a deterioration in their daily activities due to highly demandant psychological requirements in their workplaces. Within last decades, this syndrome has been studied across medical professionals, concluding that stress levels that physicians suffer is high enough to make them develop burnout syndrome. In the case of medical students, there are some recent studies, although with small samples. For this reason, given that this phenomenon may produce a huge impact in medical students' development, the aim of this study is to analyze the influential factors that may contribute to its occurrence. METHODS The necessary information was gathered through a web-based questionnaire, divided in two parts. The first part of the survey included questions related to personal aspects of the students. Burnout related questions (second part) were divided in three subscales to evaluate exhaustion, cynicism, and academic efficacy levels. RESULTS Family support for studying medicine is associated with lower burnout levels in all three scales of the Maslach Burnout Inventory. The number of years spent in the degree show the opposite trend: the more years in the degree, the higher score in all burnout scales. CONCLUSIONS Burnout syndrome is a problem among medical students in Spain that increases with the number of years studying medicine. It should be also noticed that family support and vocational studies are independent factors related to lower levels of burnout.

Abstract
Physician burnout is an issue having an impact on all of medicine but having a significant impact on the field of urology. Burnout begins in medical school and worsens in residency. Increased workload leads to increased burnout both in residency and in practice. Issues with work-life balance, electronic medical record usage, decreasing reimbursements, and increased Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services burden all have an impact on physician satisfaction with their practices. Burnout should be acknowledged, and measures for prevention should be taken by hospitals and residency programs to decrease and prevent physician burnout.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Burnout is a well-recognized phenomenon that may manifest with feelings of stress, fatigue, or exhaustion. It is a common and emerging problem among healthcare workers. Medical students may be at increased risk of burnout given the rigorous nature of their training. However, there is a paucity of data on the burden of burnout among medical students in Africa. AIM This study aimed to determine the prevalence of burnout, as assessed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Student Survey (MBI-SS) as well as factors associated with the development of burnout among students pursuing Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degrees at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), Uganda. METHODS A single-centre, cross-sectional, online survey was conducted among MBChB students of MUST. Burnout was assessed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Student Survey (MBI-SS) tool. Bivariate analysis and backward stepwise logistic regression analysis were performed to assess possible associations between variables related to participants' demography, socioeconomic, personal, learning environment, outside school environment aspects and burnout prevalence scores. RESULTS A total of 145 medical students, 102 (70.3%) male, with a median (range) age of 23 (18-40) years were studied. A total of 135 students (93.1%) presented with high levels of emotional exhaustion, 90 (62.1%) students had low levels of professional efficacy scores and 141 (97.2%) of the medical students had high levels of cynicism. Overall, 79 (54.5%) students had burnout, as defined by the MBI-SS tool. Choosing MBChB willingly appears to be an independent predictor of burnout (Adjusted odds ratio: 7.2; 95% CI: 1.4-36.9; p=0.018). CONCLUSION More than one-half of medical students questioned at MUST do experience a degree of burnout. Preventative and interventional measures should be considered in the development of the medical curriculum.
