Abstract
The principal disease impacting pepper production is Phytophthora blight, which nano‑selenium (nano-Se) controls well but has high storage requirements and low heat resistance. Varying pectin amounts yielded pectin-modified nano-Se (nano-Se@PT) with 0.1 %, 0.5 %, 1 %, and 2 % concentration. As pectin content grew, nano-Se@PT particle size reduced, zeta potential value rose, and thermogravimetric temperature climbed. The incorporation of nano-Se@PT can improve its stability and thermal resistance at 40 °C and 70 °C. Nano-Se@PT outperformed nano-Se in fungicidal and Phytophthora capsici inhibition. In vitro antifungal experiments showed that nano-Se@PT could significantly inhibit mycelium growth with an EC50 of about 4 mg/L. The particles adsorbed on the surface of mycelium, inducing death by destroying cell membranes, mitochondria, and nuclei. Non-targeted metabolomics analysis showed that nano-Se@PT treatment disrupted the mycelium growth and metabolism and changed amino acids, nucleotides, and sugar levels. In vivo experiments, 2 % nano-Se@PT had the lowest disease index and the best preventive therapy. Rhizosphere soil microbial analysis showed that nano-Se@PT recruited beneficial microorganisms such as Bacteroides, Lactobacillus, and Bifidobacterium in pepper plants, improving their Phytophthora capsici resistance and growth. The findings suggest that nano-Se@PT might be a unique pepper disease control technique and shed light on plant fungal disease management.

Abstract
Our understanding of the physiological mechanisms of the plant hormetic response to countless environmental contaminants is rapidly advancing. However, the microbiome is a critical determinant of plant responses to stressors, thus possibly influencing hormetic responses. Here, we review the otherwise neglected role of microbes in shaping plant stimulation by subtoxic concentrations of contaminants and vice versa. Numerous contaminants at subtoxic levels enhance microorganisms and proliferate symbionts, such as mycorrhizae and other plant beneficial microbes, leading to both direct and indirect improvements in plant physiological performance. Microbial symbiosis facilitates nutrient uptake by plants, indicating an important contribution of symbionts to phytostimulation under subtoxic contamination. We also discuss the mechanisms and implications of the stimulation of plant-microbe systems by subtoxic contaminants.

Abstract
Nanocolloids (Ncs) are ubiquitous in natural systems and play a critical role in the biogeochemical cycling of trace metals and the mobility of organic pollutants. However, the environmental behavior and ecological effects of Ncs in the soil remain largely unknown. The accumulation of Ncs may have detrimental or beneficial effects on different compartments of the soil environment. This review discusses the major transformation processes (e.g., agglomeration/aggregation, absorption, deposition, dissolution, and redox reactions), transport, bioavailability of Ncs, and their roles in element cycles in soil systems. Notably, Ncs can act as effective carriers for other pollutants and contribute to environmental pollution by spreading pathogens, nutrients, heavy metals, and organic contaminants to adjacent water bodies or groundwater. Finally, the key knowledge gaps are highlighted to better predict their potential risks, and important new directions include exploring the geochemical process and mechanism of Ncs's formation; elucidating the transformation, transport, and ultimate fate of Ncs, and their long-term effect on contaminants, organisms, and elemental cycling; and identifying the impact on the growth and quality of important crops, evaluating its dominant effect on agro-ecosystems in the soil environment.

Abstract
Plants require nutrients for growth, which they obtain from the soil via the root system. Fertilizers offer the essential nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, as well as critical secondary elements) required by plants. Soil productivity falls with each crop until nutrients are provided. A wide range of so-called fertilizer products, such as organic fertilizers, argon mineral fertilizers, and mineral fertilizers, can assist farmers in adjusting fertilization methods based on the environment and agricultural conditions (inhibitors, restricted materials, growth mediums, plant bio-stimulants, etc.). Agricultural land is reduced by erosion, pollution, careless irrigation, and fertilization. On the other hand, more agricultural production is needed to meet the demands of expanding industries and the nutritional needs of a growing population. Nano fertilizers have recently started to be manufactured to obtain the highest yield and its quality per unit area. Previous researchers found that nano fertilizers could improve plant nutrient uptake efficiency, lower soil toxicity, mitigate the potential negative effects of excessive chemical fertilizer use, and reduce the frequency of fertilization. To maximize crop yields and optimize nutrient use while reducing the overuse of chemical fertilizers, nano fertilizersNFs are crucial in agriculture. The key component of these fertilizers is that they contain one or more macro- and micronutrients that can be applied regularly in minute doses while not damaging the environment. However, they have a minimal effect on plant growth and agricultural yields when employed in high numbers, like synthetic fertilizers. This article explains the features, relevance and classification of nano-fertilizers, their use in plant development, their advantages and disadvantages, and the results achieved in this field.

Abstract
Although exogenous chemicals frequently exhibit a biphasic response in regulating plant growth, characterized by low-dose stimulation and high-dose inhibition, the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. This study demonstrates, for the first time, the compensatory function of rhizosphere microbiota in assisting plants to withstand pesticide stress. It was observed that pak choi plants, in response to foliar-spraying imidacloprid at both low and high doses, could increase the total number of rhizosphere bacteria and enrich numerous beneficial bacteria. These bacteria have capabilities for promoting plant growth and degrading the pesticide, such as Nocardioides, Brevundimonas, and Sphingomonas. The beneficial bacterial communities were recruited by stressed plants through increasing the release of primary metabolites in root exudates, such as amino acids, fatty acids, and lysophosphatidylcholines. At low doses of pesticide application, the microbial compensatory effect overcame pesticide stress, leading to plant growth promotion. However, with high doses of pesticide application, the microbial compensatory effect was insufficient to counteract pesticide stress, resulting in plant growth inhibition. These findings pave the way for designing improved pesticide application strategies and contribute to a better understanding of how rhizosphere microbiota can be used as an eco-friendly approach to mitigate chemical-induced stress in crops.

Abstract
MAIN CONCLUSION This review article highlights a broader perspective of NPs and plant-root interaction by focusing on their beneficial and deleterious impacts on root system architecture (RSA). The root performs a vital function by securing itself in the soil, absorbing and transporting water and nutrients to facilitate plant growth and productivity. In dicots, the architecture of the root system (RSA) is markedly shaped by the development of the primary root and its branches, showcasing considerable adaptability in response to changes in the environment. For promoting agriculture and combating global food hunger, the use of nanoparticles (NPs) may be an exciting option, for which it is essential to understand the behaviour of plants under NPs exposure. The nature of NPs and their physicochemical characteristics play a significant role in the positive/negative response of roots and shoots. Root morphological features, such as root length, root mass and root development features, may regulated positively/negatively by different types of NPs. In addition, application of NPs may also enhance nutrient transport and soil fertility by the promotion of soil microorganisms including plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) and also soil enzymes. Interestingly the interaction of nanomaterials (NMs) with rhizospheric bacteria can enhance plant development and soil health. However, some studies also suggested that the increased use of several types of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) may disrupt the equilibrium of the soil-root interface and unsafe morphogenesis by causing the browning of roots and suppressing the growth of root and soil microbes. Thus, this review article has sought to compile a broader perspective of NPs and plant-root interaction by focusing on their beneficial or deleterious impacts on RSA.

Abstract
Rice blast disease (RBD) caused by Magnaporthe oryzae, threaten food security by cutting agricultural output. Nano agrochemicals are now perceived as sustainable, cost-effective alternatives to traditional pesticides. This study investigated bioformulation of moringa chitosan nanoparticles (M-CsNPs) and their mechanisms for suppressing RBD while minimizing toxic effects on the microenvironment. M-CsNPs, sized 46 nm with semi-spherical morphology, significantly suppressed pathogen growth, integrity, and colonization at 200 mg L-1in vitro. Greenhouse tests with foliar exposure to the same concentration resulted in a substantial 77.7 % reduction in RBD, enhancing antioxidant enzyme activity and plant health. Furthermore, M-CsNPs improved photosynthesis, gas exchange, and the nutritional profile of diseased rice plants. RNA-seq analysis highlighted upregulated defense-related genes in treated rice plants. Metagenomic study showcased reshaping of the rice microbiome, reducing Magnaporthe abundance by 93.5 %. Both healthy and diseased rice plants showed increased microbial diversity, particularly favoring specific beneficial species Thiobacillus, Nitrospira, Nocardioides, and Sphingomicrobium in the rhizosphere and Azonexus, Agarivorans, and Bradyrhizobium in the phyllosphere. This comprehensive study unravels the diverse mechanisms by which M-CsNPs interact with plants and pathogens, curbing M. oryzae damage, promoting plant growth, and modulating the rice microbiome. It underscores the significant potential for effective plant disease management.

Abstract
Globally, food security has become a critical concern due to the rise in human population and the current climate change crisis. Usage of conventional agrochemicals to maximize crop yields has resulted in the degradation of fertile soil, environmental pollution as well as human and agroecosystem health risks. Nanotechnology in agriculture is a fast-emerging and new area of research explored to improve crop productivity and nutrient-use efficiency using nano-sized agrochemicals at lower doses than conventional agrochemicals. Nanoparticles in agriculture are applied as nanofertilizers and/or nanopesticides. Positive results have been observed in terms of plant growth when using nano-based agricultural amendments. However, their continuous application may have adverse effects on plant-associated rhizospheric and endospheric microorganisms which often play a crucial role in plant growth, nutrient uptake, and disease prevention. While research shows that the application of nanoparticles has the potential to improve plant growth and yield, their effect on the diversity and function of plant-associated microorganisms remains under-explored. This review provides an overview of plant-associated microorganisms and their functions. Additionally, it highlights the response of plant-associated microorganisms to nanoparticle application and provides insight into areas of research required to promote sustainable and precision agricultural practices that incorporate nanofertilizers and nanopesticides.

Abstract
The study investigated the effects of different silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the soil microbiome and wheat growth. For comparison purposes, a commercial fungicide and silver nitrate (AgNO3) were used. The results revealed three distinct groups of nanoparticles based on their impacts. Small-size AgNPs (10 nm) with a negative charge, as well as fungicide had limited effects on the microbiome, similar to the no-treatment control. Bigger in size (30-60 nm) and a negative charge AgNPs showed the most beneficial effects on soil microbiota shifts. These AgNPs increased the abundance of bacteria with beneficial traits such as nitrogen-fixing, urease, protease, and lignin degradation bacteria. The third type of AgNPs had a positive charge of nanostructure and influenced specific microbial populations, increasing the abundance of anaerobic and autotrophic groups of microorganisms, which could be assessed as a harmful shift for plants growth promotions and was similar to the AgNO3 treatment. Overall, the study emphasized the potential of AgNPs in agriculture not only as biocidal. The conducted study proved that AgNPs with bigger size/negative charge, used in low concentration can have a surprisingly stimulating effect on the positive characteristics of the rhizosphere microbiome. Moreover, the surface charge of AgNPs is a significant factor affecting microbial activity of wheat rhizosphere soil, which in this treatment is significantly similar to the AgNO3 treatment.

Abstract
The plant-associated microbiome is known to be a critical component for crop growth, nutrient acquisition, resistance to pathogens, and abiotic stress tolerance. Conventional approaches have been attempted to manipulate the plant-soil microbiome to improve plant performance; however, several issues have arisen, such as collateral negative impacts on microbiota composition. The lack of reliability and robustness of conventional techniques warrants efforts to develop novel alternative strategies. Nano-enabled approaches have emerged as promising platforms for enhancing agricultural sustainability and global food security. Specifically, the use of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) as nanoscale agrochemicals has great potential to modulate the plant-associated microbiome. We review the dynamic interplay between nano-agrochemicals and the plant-associated microbiome for the safe development and use of nano-enabled microbiome engineering.

Abstract
Nanotechnology has enormous potential for sustainable agriculture, such as improving nutrient use efficiency, plant health, and food production. Nanoscale modulation of the plant-associated microbiota offers an additional valuable opportunity to increase global crop production and ensure future food and nutrient security. Nanomaterials (NMs) applied to agricultural crops can impact plant and soil microbiota, which offers valuable services to host plants, including the acquisition of nutrients, abiotic stress tolerance, and disease suppression. Dissecting the complex interactions between NMs and plants by integrating multi-omic approaches is providing new insights into how NMs can activate host responses and functionality as well as influence native microbial communities. Such nexus and moving beyond descriptive microbiome studies to hypothesis-driven research will foster microbiome engineering and open up opportunities for the development of synthetic microbial communities to provide agronomic solutions. Herein, we first summarize the significant role of NMs and the plant microbiome in crop productivity and then focus on NMs effects on plant-associated microbiota. We outline three urgent priority research areas and call for a transdisciplinary collaborative approach, involving plant scientists, soil scientists, environmental scientists, ecologists, microbiologists, taxonomists, chemists, physicists, and stakeholders, to advance nano-microbiome research. Detailed understanding of the nanomaterial-plant-microbiome interactions and the mechanisms underlying NMs-mediated shifts in the microbiome assembly and functions may help to exploit the services of both nano-objects and microbiota for next-generation crop health.

Abstract
Current disease resistance breeding, which is largely dependent on the exploitation of resistance genes in host plants, faces the serious challenges of rapidly evolving phytopathogens. The phyllosphere is the largest biological surface on Earth and an untapped reservoir of functional microbiomes. The phyllosphere microbiome has the potential to defend against plant diseases. However, the mechanisms of how the microbiota assemble and function in the phyllosphere remain largely elusive, and this restricts the exploitation of the targeted beneficial microbes in the field. Here we review the endogenous and exogenous cues impacting microbiota assembly in the phyllosphere and how the phyllosphere microbiota in turn facilitate the disease resistance of host plants. We further construct a holistic framework by integrating of holo-omics, genetic manipulation, culture-dependent characterization and emerging artificial intelligence techniques, such as deep learning, to engineer the phyllosphere microbiome for sustainable crop production.

Pesticides constitute an integral part of modern agriculture. However, there are still concerns about their effects on non-target organisms. To address this the European Commission has imposed a stringent regulatory scheme for new pesticide compounds. Assessment of the aquatic toxicity of pesticides is based on a range of advanced tests. This does not apply to terrestrial ecosystems, where the toxicity of pesticides on soil microorganisms, is based on an outdated and crude test (N mineralization). This regulatory gap is reinforced by the recent methodological and standardization advances in soil microbial ecology. The inclusion of such standardized tools in a revised risk assessment scheme will enable the accurate estimation of the toxicity of pesticides on soil microorganisms and on associated ecosystem services. In this review we (i) summarize recent work in the assessment of the soil microbial toxicity of pesticides and point to ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms (AOM) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) as most relevant bioindicator groups (ii) identify limitations in the experimental approaches used and propose mitigation solutions, (iii) identify scientific gaps and (iv) propose a new risk assessment procedure to assess the effects of pesticides on soil microorganisms.

Factors Affecting the Natural Regeneration of the Larix principis-rupprechtii Mayr Plantations: Evidence from the Composition and Co-Occurrence Network Structure of Soil Bacterial Communities. Abstract
Bacterial communities living in the soil can affect forests natural regeneration, but the effects of their composition and network inference on regeneration of Larix principis-rupprechtii Mayr plantations remain largely elusive. Therefore, the redundancy analysis and structure equations modeling of affecting elements for the regeneration of L. principis-rupprechtii plots including the diversity, composition and network structure of soil bacteria, topographic factors, light factors, and soil physicochemical properties have been conducted. It was found that the increased modularity of the soil bacterial community co-occurrence network and the enrichment of metabolic pathway bacteria had a significant positive effect on the successful regeneration (total effect of 0.84). The complexity of the soil bacterial community gradually decreased with the increase of stand regeneration, and the composition and structure of the flora became simpler (with standard path coefficients: −0.70). In addition, altitude also had a positive effect on regeneration with a total effect of 0.39. Soil nutrients had significantly negative effects on regeneration with total effects of −0.87. Soil bacterial communities may mediate the effects of soil nutrients, altitude, litter thickness, and herbaceous diversity on regeneration in L. principis-rupprechtii plantations. The results provide a great contribution to our understanding of regeneration-soil bacterial community interactions and the basis and important data for sustainable management of L. principis-rupprechtii plantations in the Lvliang Mountains located in northern China.

Abstract
Achieving sustainable agricultural productivity and global food security are two of the biggest challenges of the new millennium. Addressing these challenges requires innovative technologies that can uplift global food production, while minimizing collateral environmental damage and preserving the resilience of agroecosystems against a rapidly changing climate. Nanomaterials with the ability to encapsulate and deliver pesticidal active ingredients (AIs) in a responsive (for example, controlled, targeted and synchronized) manner offer new opportunities to increase pesticidal efficacy and efficiency when compared with conventional pesticides. Here, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the key properties of nanopesticides in controlling agricultural pests for crop enhancement compared with their non-nanoscale analogues. Our analysis shows that when compared with non-nanoscale pesticides, the overall efficacy of nanopesticides against target organisms is 31.5% higher, including an 18.9% increased efficacy in field trials. Notably, the toxicity of nanopesticides toward non-target organisms is 43.1% lower, highlighting a decrease in collateral damage to the environment. The premature loss of AIs prior to reaching target organisms is reduced by 41.4%, paired with a 22.1% lower leaching potential of AIs in soils. Nanopesticides also render other benefits, including enhanced foliar adhesion, improved crop yield and quality, and a responsive nanoscale delivery platform of AIs to mitigate various pressing biotic and abiotic stresses (for example, heat, drought and salinity). Nonetheless, the uncertainties associated with the adverse effects of some nanopesticides are not well-understood, requiring further investigations. Overall, our findings show that nanopesticides are potentially more efficient, sustainable and resilient with lower adverse environmental impacts than their conventional analogues. These benefits, if harnessed appropriately, can promote higher crop yields and thus contribute towards sustainable agriculture and global food security.

Abstract
A model wetland with Salix was established to investigate the effects of CuO nanoparticles (NPs; the equivalent amount of Cu at 0, 100 and 500 mg/kg) on plant, soil enzyme activity and microbial community. Ionic Cu (100, 500 mg/kg) and bulk-sized CuO particles (BPs, 500 mg/kg) were included as controls. The results suggested the CuO NPs at 500 mg/kg and ionic Cu treatments inhibited the plant growth, while CuO NPs at 100 mg/kg and CuO BPs at 500 mg/kg played a facilitating role. CuO NPs significantly decreased the activities of peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase, while ionic Cu treatments increased peroxidase activity, BPs and ionic Cu (500 mg/kg) increased the polyphenol oxidase activity. Bacterial community richness and diversity were reduced in all Cu treatments; however, CuO NPs and BPs at 500 mg/kg significantly increased the richness and diversity of fungal community.Soil microbial community was significantly altered by Cu types and dose. In comparison with ionic Cu and CuO BPs, CuO NPs uniquely enriched the microbial community and the fungal families.Overall, it demonstrate that both particle size and dose regulate the impact of CuO on wetland ecology, which deepens our understanding on the ecological risks of CuO NPs in freshwater forested wetland.

Abstract
The paper provides a comprehensive and foundational mechanistic framework of hormesis that establishes its centrality in medicine and public health. This hormetic framework is applied to the assessment of olive polyphenols with respect to their capacity to slow the onset and reduce the magnitude of a wide range of age-related disorders and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's Disease and Parkinson's Disease. It is proposed that olive polyphenol-induced anti-inflammatory protective effects are mediated in large part via the activation of AMPK and the upregulation of Nrf2 pathway. Consistently, herein we also review the importance of the modulation of Nrf2-related stress responsive vitagenes by olive polyphenols, which at low concentration according to the hormesis theory activates this neuroprotective cascade to preserve brain health and its potential use in the prevention and therapy against aging and age-related cognitive disorders in humans.

Abstract
Precision farming using nanoparticles is a cutting-edge technology for safe cultivation of crop plants in marginal areas afflicted with environmental/climatic stresses like salinity, drought, extremes of temperature, ultraviolet B stress or polluted with xenobiotics like toxic heavy metals and fluoride. Major cereal crops like rice, wheat, maize, barley, sorghum and millets which provide the staple food for the entire global population are mainly glycophytes and are extremely susceptible to abiotic stress-induced oxidative injuries. Nanofertilization/exogenous spraying of beneficial nanoparticles alleviates the oxidative damages in cereals by altering the homeostasis of phytohormones like abscisic acid, gibberellins, cytokinins, auxins, salicylic acid, jasmonic acid and melatonin and by triggering the synthesis of gasotransmitter nitric oxide. Signaling cross-talks of nanoparticles with plant growth regulators enable activation of the defence machinery, comprising of antioxidants, thiol-rich compounds and glyoxalases and restrict xenobiotic mobilization by suppressing the expression of associated transporters. Accelerated nutrient uptake and grain biofortification under the influence of nanoparticles result in optimum crop productivity under sub-optimal conditions. However, over-dosing of even beneficial nanoparticles promotes severe phytotoxicity. Hence, the concentration of nanoparticles and mode of administering need to be thoroughly standardized before large-scale field applications, to ensure sustainable cereal cultivation with minimum ecological imbalance.

Abstract
In the present study we examined the effect of nanogypsum and Pseudomonas taiwanensis strain BCRC 17751on plant and soil health using conventional and metagenomics approaches. Soil physicochemical properties and agronomical parameters of maize plants were reported to be better when applied with nanogypsum and bacterial inoculum together. When compared to control a significant increase in total bacterial counts, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium (NPK) solubilizing bacterial population and soil enzyme activities (fluorescein diacetate, alkaline phosphatase, dehydrogenase, β-glucosidase, arylesterase and amylase) was reported in treatments. The metagenomics studies revealed dominance of beneficial bacteria such as Proteobacteria, Bacteriodetes, Planctomycetes, Acidobacteria and Nitrospirae in treated soil. On the other hand some novel bacterial diversity was also reported in treated soil which was evident from presence of taxonomically unclassified sequences. Hence, it can be concluded that combined application of nanogypsum and Pseudomonas taiwanensis in maize help in improving the structure and function of soil which affects the plant health without causing any toxic effect. However, in situ validation of the prescribed treatment is required under field conditions on different crops in order to give maximum benefits to the farmers and the environment.

Abstract
A dose-response relationship to stressors, according to the hormesis theory, is characterized by low-dose stimulation and high-dose inhibition. It is non-linear with a low-dose optimum. Stress responses by cells lead to adapted vitality and fitness. Physical stress can be exerted through heat, radiation, or physical exercise. Chemical stressors include reactive species from oxygen (ROS), nitrogen (RNS), and carbon (RCS), carcinogens, elements, such as lithium (Li) and silicon (Si), and metals, such as silver (Ag), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb). Anthropogenic chemicals are agrochemicals (phytotoxins, herbicides), industrial chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. Biochemical stress can be exerted through toxins, medical drugs (e.g., cytostatics, psychopharmaceuticals, non-steroidal inhibitors of inflammation), and through fasting (dietary restriction). Key-lock interactions between enzymes and substrates, antigens and antibodies, antigen-presenting cells, and cognate T cells are the basics of biology, biochemistry, and immunology. Their rules do not obey linear dose-response relationships. The review provides examples of biologic stressors: oncolytic viruses (e.g., immuno-virotherapy of cancer) and hormones (e.g., melatonin, stress hormones). Molecular mechanisms of cellular stress adaptation involve the protein quality control system (PQS) and homeostasis of proteasome, endoplasmic reticulum, and mitochondria. Important components are transcription factors (e.g., Nrf2), micro-RNAs, heat shock proteins, ionic calcium, and enzymes (e.g., glutathion redox enzymes, DNA methyltransferases, and DNA repair enzymes). Cellular growth control, intercellular communication, and resistance to stress from microbial infections involve growth factors, cytokines, chemokines, interferons, and their respective receptors. The effects of hormesis during evolution are multifarious: cell protection and survival, evolutionary flexibility, and epigenetic memory. According to the hormesis theory, this is true for the entire biosphere, e.g., archaia, bacteria, fungi, plants, and the animal kingdoms.
