Abstract
Background/Objectives: Childhood eating behaviors result from a complex interplay of familial, social, and environmental factors, influenced by socioeconomic and cultural contexts. These behaviors impact dietary habits, nutritional status, and long-term health. Using the Social Ecological Model (SEM), this narrative review synthesizes evidence on key determinants of childhood eating behaviors and proposes a framework for multi-level interventions. Methods: A structured literature search was conducted across PubMed, PsycINFO, and CINAHL, focusing on studies published between January 2014 and September 2024. Keywords related to childhood eating behaviors, familial determinants, and social influences were used to identify relevant studies. Inclusion criteria centered on empirical research examining how social and familial factors impact childhood eating behaviors within the SEM framework. Results: The review highlights critical determinants, including parental feeding practices, home food environments, peer influences, screen time, school meal programs, and socioeconomic disparities. These factors interact across multiple levels, emphasizing the importance of holistic interventions that target both individual behaviors and broader systemic influences. Conclusions: Addressing childhood eating behaviors requires a multi-level approach that integrates caregiver education, peer-led interventions, improved food environments, and supportive policies. Healthcare providers and policymakers play a crucial role in implementing strategies that foster healthier dietary behaviors and mitigate childhood obesity risks.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To identify the dietary patterns of Brazilian adolescents and to verify their associated factors. METHODS Cross-sectional study with data from the 2019 National Survey of School Health. Students aged 13 to 17 participated in the survey, totaling a sample of 125,123 adolescents. The variables were divided into two groups: healthy and unhealthy diet. Principal component analysis was used to identify the dietary patterns. To evaluate the association, logistic regression was used, estimated by the Odds Ratio, with the respective 95 % confidence intervals. RESULTS Two main components were identified: first related to regular consumption of fruits, vegetables, and beans; the second related to non-regular consumption of sweet treats, soft drinks, and fast food. The highest likelihood of regularly consuming the first was observed among adolescents residing in the Central-West and Southeast regions, with higher maternal education, who abstained from alcohol, engaged in physical activity, were not sedentary, ate breakfast, had lunch or dinner with their parents, refrained from eating while engaging in other activities, and participated in school meal programs. The lowest likelihood of not regularly consuming the second was found among male adolescents aged 16 to 17, attending public schools, who abstained from alcohol, and were not sedentary. CONCLUSIONS This study identified two dietary patterns, both linked to socioeconomic factors and healthy lifestyle habits. Recognizing these patterns among adolescents enables health surveillance efforts aimed at reducing diseases and health problems.

Abstract
The influence of family meals on nutrition and health for families has been understudied, especially in low- and middle-income countries. We aimed to analyze associations between regular family meals and body mass index (BMI), food consumption, eating, and sedentary behaviors among Brazilian schoolchildren and their caregivers. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1887 Brazilian schoolchildren aged 6-11 years and their caregivers. Caregivers provided sociodemographic data, their child's weight and height, and the frequency of family meals. Schoolchildren provided data on gender and silhouette scale. Both provided their food consumption, eating, and sedentary behavior data. Associations between regular family meals and BMI, ultra-processed food consumption, and dietary diversity were assessed through multivariate logistic regression models. Correlations of regular family meals with eating and sedentary behaviors were assessed using Pearson chi-square. Regular family meals were frequent (86.6%), and they were associated with less unhealthy BMI in caregivers (AOR: 0.74; 95%CI: 0.5-0.9), as well as higher dietary diversity in caregivers (AOR: 1.66; 95%CI: 1.0-2.7) and in schoolchildren (AOR: 1.78; 95%CI: 1.4-2.3). The coexistence of high dietary diversity and both low ultra-processed food consumption (AOR: 1.45; 95%CI: 1.0-2.1) and healthy BMI (AOR: 1.41; 95%CI: 1.0-1.9) in children was associated with regular family meals. Regular family meals were correlated with healthy eating behaviors in child-caregiver dyads (p < 0.002) and with sedentary behavior in caregivers (p = 0.019). Our findings underscore regular family meals as a protective factor against malnutrition among Brazilian families.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The role of eating habits in adolescent mental health has become a growing area of interest for researchers and health professionals. Recent studies suggest that healthy eating habits may play a role in the development and management of mental health. However, existing literature is largely based on clinical populations, and comparisons are challenged by sociocultural differences and methodological issues. The aim of the present study was to use nationally representative data based on standardized procedures, to explore associations between adolescents eating habits and mental health, considering the importance of age, gender, socioeconomic factors, and country. METHODS The study was based on data from Nordic adolescents (age 11, 13 and 15 years) who participated in the 2017/2018 Health Behavior in School-aged Children (HBSC) study (n = 22384). General linear modelling and multigroup regression analysis were used to examine the relationship between food habits (intake of fruit, vegetables, sweets, soft drinks), meal habits (intake of breakfast and having family meals together), and mental health (life satisfaction and subjective health complaints). The analyses were weighted and adjusted for age, gender, socio-economic status, and country. RESULTS Overall, healthier eating habits were associated with better mental health. The strongest associations were found between meal habits (breakfast consumption and having family meals together) and mental health. Gender and country differences were seen, with weaker associations found among Danish boys. CONCLUSION Eating habits should be considered when promoting mental health in the adolescent population. While gender differences and cross-country variations exist, even minor enhancements in eating behaviors could yield meaningful benefits.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the relationship between the frequency of household shared meals and the intake of 17 food groups and 21 nutrients. Participants were 3310 men and 3386 women ≥20 years old living in a household of ≥2 members from 2018 and 2019 National Health and Nutrition Surveys in Japan. A one-day household dietary record was used to classify an individual's shared meal frequency and dietary intake. A shared meal is defined as an eating occasion (i.e., breakfast, lunch, and dinner) where ≥1 food item-other than sugars, fats and oils, beverages, and condiments-was recorded with an assigned approximated shared proportion. The shared meal frequency for each individual was classified into one of four categories: 0, 1, 2, and 3 times/day. Dietary intake was compared across the shared meal categories adjusted for age, occupation, household size, meal skipping, snacking, residential areas, and within-household correlations. Both men and women who had more frequent shared meals showed higher intakes of potatoes, vegetables, mushrooms, and condiments but less confectioneries and beverages. A higher shared meal frequency was also related to a higher intake of many (12/21) nutrients (e.g., protein, dietary fiber, and potassium). However, in women, there was a positive association between shared meal frequency and sodium intake. A higher frequency of household shared meals may be related to a more favorable dietary intake; except for concerns about sodium intake in women.

Abstract
Emerging research in paediatric obesity has demonstrated that parental involvement in the weight management process can improve weight outcomes in children. Recent guidelines by the American Academy of Pediatrics note the importance of parent and family involvement in treatment. However, it is currently unknown if including the entire family in obesity treatment can supersede outcomes associated with participation of only one parent. Family Systems Theory (FST) provides the theoretical foundation for examining one's healthy behaviours as they exist within the context of their family, defined by family dynamics. This narrative review aims to reconsider prior definitions of paediatric family-based management using the FST framework to be inclusive of family and household diversity and in doing so, inform research not only within weight management but also other domains of clinical care requiring family support or change. Applying FST to paediatric weight management highlights the link between family dynamics and paediatric obesity, demonstrating the association of dysfunctional family dynamics with more severe obesity. While family-based weight management remains the gold standard for treatment of paediatric obesity, more investigation is needed in expanding family-based interventions to impact entire families and potentially improve outcomes more broadly for overall family health and wellbeing.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the association between happiness and food-related behaviours and other potential factors among older persons in Thailand. This was a cross-sectional study with multistage random sampling. In total, 1,197 older (age 60 + years) persons participated in this study. Face-to-face interviews were conducted to obtain information about socio-demographic characteristics, health status, household chores, home gardening, financial situation, family meals, and food security. Descriptive and multivariate regression analyses were performed for data analysis. The analysis found that age, health status, household chores, and home gardening were found to be significantly associated with happiness. Statistically-significant associations of financial situation, family meals, and food insecurity with happiness were also observed. People who were not dissatisfied with their financial situation were happier than people who were unhappy with their financial situation. Older people who ate every meal with a family member(s) were happiest. People who had severe food insecurity were less happy than those with food security. The findings suggest the need for investment priorities on food and nutrition with a long-term policy to ensure financial self-sufficiency and food security among older persons and their family.

Abstract
The present study identified dietary patterns (DP) and analyse their association with household composition. This is a cross-sectional school-based study, with a nationally representative sample of Brazilian adolescent students, aged 11-19 years, with data from National School Health Survey (n 102 072). Food consumption was obtained through the weekly frequency of consumption of food markers, and the confirmatory factor analysis was applied to examine the latent variables 'Healthy' (beans, legumes/vegetables and fresh fruit/fruit salad) and 'Unhealthy' (ultra-processed foods, sweets, soft drinks and snacks) DP. The association between household composition and DP was estimated considering lives with both parents as reference category. Among adolescents aged 11-14 years, adherence to healthy DP was lower for boys who lived only with mother (β = -2·1), and boys (β = -4·9) and girls (β = -4·5) who lived without any parents. Adherence to unhealthy DP was higher among boys (β = 7·6) and girls (β = 6·0) who lived only with mother, and boys (β = 4·6) and girls (β = 5·3) who lived only with father. For older adolescents (aged 15-19 years), adherence to the unhealthy DP was higher among boys who lived only with mother (β = 3·9) or only with father (β = 5·3) and girls who lived only with mother (β = 6·3). Adherence to healthy DP was lower among girls who lived only with father (β = -9·0). Thus, adolescents who lived in single-parent households had lower adherence to healthy DP and greater adherence to unhealthy DP. Among younger adolescents of both sexes, living without any parent contributed to lower adherence to healthy DP.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW Family meals represent a novel strategy for improving cardiovascular health in youth. The purpose of this paper is to describe the association between family meals, dietary patterns, and weight status in youth. REVIEW FINDINGS According to the American Heart Association's Life's Essential 8, poor diet quality and overweight/obesity status are key contributors to suboptimal cardiovascular health. Current literature highlights a positive correlation between the number of family meals and healthier eating patterns, including greater consumption of fruits and vegetables, and a reduced risk of obesity in youth. However, to date, the role of family meals in improving cardiovascular health in youth has been largely observational and prospective studies are needed to assess causality. Family meals may be an effective strategy for improved dietary patterns and weight status in youth.

Abstract
Systematic reviews have examined the multitude of studies investigating family mealtimes and their importance to child/adolescent health and psychosocial outcomes, but the focus of each is limited to specific aspects of family meals (e.g., frequency) and/or specific outcomes (e.g., nutrition). Their findings require synthesis and so a systematic umbrella review was undertaken. Databases were searched to identify systematic reviews (with or without meta-analysis/meta-synthesis) addressing at least one of the following questions: what are the characteristics and/or correlates of family mealtimes; what outcomes are associated with family mealtimes; are interventions aimed at promoting family mealtimes effective? Forty-one eligible reviews were retrieved. Their findings demonstrate that families with children/adolescents typically eat together at least a few days each week. More frequent family meals are predicted by a more positive mealtime environment, more positive attitudes towards family meals, the presence of younger children, and families having more time. Greater family meal frequency protects children/adolescents against a poorer diet, obesity, risk behaviours, poorer mental health and wellbeing, and poorer academic outcomes. Findings from interventions seeking to promote family mealtimes are mixed. This umbrella review provides a comprehensive and integrated understanding of research into family mealtimes, establishing where evidence is sound and where further research is needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES A meal companion is an important social determinant of eating behaviors and is related to what and how much a person will eat within the social context. This study examined the difference in diet quality according to the type of dining companion. SUBJECTS/METHODS This study included 15,074 adults (6,180 men and 8,894 women, ≥ 19 years) who participated in the 6th (2013-2015) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Korean Healthy Eating Index (KHEI) scores were calculated using the food frequency questionnaire data. Survey multivariate linear regression analysis was used to assess the association of dining companions (ordinary type, eating with family members, eating alone, and eating with others) and the total and component scores of KHEI. RESULTS People who exclusively ate with someone other than family or exclusively ate alone had lower total KHEI scores in both men (57.23 ± 0.67, 58.56 ± 0.73 vs. 62.71 ± 0.26) and women (57.6 3±0.97, 63.89±0.58 vs. 65.79±0.22) compared to people with the ordinary type (all P < 0.05). Both men and women who ate exclusively with someone other than family had lower KHEI component scores for breakfast, whole grains, and fruit, excluding juice, compared to the ordinary type and family eating group. Compared to the eating alone group, the component scores for breakfast and whole grains were lower in the eating with others group. CONCLUSION The diet quality differed according to the meal companion type. People who always ate with someone other than family members and men who ate alone showed lower diet quality scores than the ordinary type. More research will be needed to improve their adherence to dietary recommendations.

Abstract
Introduction The aim of this feasibility and proof-of-concept study was to examine the use of a novel wearable device for automatic food intake detection to capture the full range of free-living eating environments of adults with overweight and obesity. In this paper, we document eating environments of individuals that have not been thoroughly described previously in nutrition software as current practices rely on participant self-report and methods with limited eating environment options. Methods Data from 25 participants and 116 total days (7 men, 18 women, Mage = 44 ± 12 years, BMI 34.3 ± 5.2 kg/mm2), who wore the passive capture device for at least 7 consecutive days (≥12h waking hours/d) were analyzed. Data were analyzed at the participant level and stratified amongst meal type into breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack categories. Out of 116 days, 68.1% included breakfast, 71.5% included lunch, 82.8% included dinner, and 86.2% included at least one snack. Results The most prevalent eating environment among all eating occasions was at home and with one or more screens in use (breakfast: 48.1%, lunch: 42.2%, dinner: 50%, and snacks: 55%), eating alone (breakfast: 75.9%, lunch: 89.2%, dinner: 74.3%, snacks: 74.3%), in the dining room (breakfast: 36.7%, lunch: 30.1%, dinner: 45.8%) or living room (snacks: 28.0%), and in multiple locations (breakfast: 44.3%, lunch: 28.8%, dinner: 44.8%, snacks: 41.3%). Discussion Results suggest a passive capture device can provide accurate detection of food intake in multiple eating environments. To our knowledge, this is the first study to classify eating occasions in multiple eating environments and may be a useful tool for future behavioral research studies to accurately codify eating environments.

Abstract
Racial/ethnic and socioeconomic differences were shown to have an influence on child fruit and vegetable intake. This study examined the associations between parent and child fruit and vegetable intake and the home nutrition environment among Hispanic/Latino and African American families. Through a cross-sectional study design, self-reported surveys (n = 6074) were obtained from adult-child dyad participants enrolled in Brighter Bites, an evidence-based health promotion program, in the fall of 2018. For every once/day increase in frequency of parent FV intake, there was an increase in child FV intake by 0.701 times/day (CI: 0.650, 0.751, p < 0.001) and 0.916 times/day (CI: 0.762, 1.07; p < 0.001) among Hispanic/Latinos and African Americans, respectively. In Hispanic/Latino participants, significant positive associations were found between fruits as well as vegetables served at mealtimes ≥3 times/week (p < 0.001), family mealtimes 7 times/week (p = 0.018), parent-child communication about healthy eating and nutrition at least sometimes during the past 6 months (p < 0.05), and frequency of child FV intake, after adjusting for covariates. In African American participants, a significant positive association was found in fruits served at mealtimes ≥1 times/week (p < 0.05), and vegetables served at mealtimes ≥5 times/week (p < 0.05). Meals cooked from scratch a few times a day/all the time were significantly positively associated with frequency of child FV intake for both Hispanic/Latino (p = 0.017) and African American (p = 0.007) groups. The relationship between home nutrition environment and child FV intake varied by race and ethnicity. Future programs should consider designing culturally tailored interventions to address racial/ethnic-specific influences that match the child's race, culture, and ethnicity.

Abstract
Objective To examine associations between food insecurity and parent feeding practices for children ages 7-12 years; to determine differences between cohorts in urban and rural communities. Design Secondary analysis using baseline data from 2 randomized controlled trials: HOME Plus (urban) and NU-HOME (rural). Participants Convenience sample of 264 parent-child dyads. Children were 51.5% female, 9.28 ± 1.45 years. Variables Measured Dependent variables included the Child Feeding Questionnaire (CFQ) restrictive feeding subscale, parent modeling of fruits and vegetables score, and family meal frequency (FMF) at breakfast and the evening meal. Food insecurity was the primary independent variable. Analysis Multivariable linear or Poisson regression for each outcome. Results Food insecurity was associated with a 26% lower weekly rate of FMF at breakfast (95% CI 6%-42%; p=0.02). In stratified analysis, this association was only in the rural NU-HOME study (44% lower weekly rate; 95% CI 19%-63%; p=0.003). Food insecurity was not associated with CFQ restrictive score, parent modeling score, or FMF at the evening meal. Conclusions and Implications Food insecurity was associated with less frequent family breakfast, but not with other parent feeding practices. Future studies could investigate supportive mechanisms for positive feeding practices in households experiencing food insecurity.

Abstract
Background Family meals are associated with adolescent health outcomes. Studies have reported that girls are less likely than boys to have dinner with their families. Purpose This study examined gender differences in family meal frequency and the relationship between meal frequency and other health measures, using a large and representative sample of California middle and high school students. Methods This study analyzed data from the 2019-2020 California Student Tobacco Survey (159,904 students in grades 8, 10, and 12). Dinner with the family 5-7 times per week was defined as high frequency. Students reported substance use (of tobacco, marijuana, and alcohol) and rated their mental health and happiness in their home life. All analyses were weighted to reflect the California student population. Results Fewer than half (44.7%) of students reported a high frequency of family meals, with boys more likely than girls and those who identified their gender in another way the least likely to do so (48.3%, 42.2%, 34.0%, respectively). Gender differences persisted across demographics and the quality of family relationships, and were evident as early as eighth grade. Less frequent family meals were associated with poorer mental health (OR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.29-1.40) and substance use (OR = 1.27, 95% CI: 1.21-1.32), controlling for the effects of demographics and family dynamics. Conclusion Gender differences in family meal frequency emerge early in adolescence and persist across demographics and family relationships. Given that family meals play a protective role in an adolescent's life, these gender differences are concerning.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to distinguish family profiles based on the level of satisfaction with food-related life (SWFoL) of mothers, fathers, and adolescents, and to characterize the profiles based on the three family members' diet quality and nutritional status, family's eating habits, parental feeding practices, parent's nutritional knowledge, and sociodemographic characteristics. Questionnaires were applied to a sample of 300 two-parent families with adolescent children, aged between 10 and 17 years, in Temuco, Chile. The questionnaires used were: satisfaction with food-related life (SWFoL); adapted healthy eating index (AHEI); family eating habits questionnaire (FEHQ); and the nutritional knowledge subscale. They also answered questions about eating habits and provided data to determine BMI and sociodemographic characteristics. Four different profiles were identified with respect to SWFoL: "Families satisfied with their food" (50.6%); "Fathers and mothers moderately satisfied with their food, children satisfied" (23.2%); "Families extremely satisfied with their food" (16.6%); and "Fathers and mothers satisfied with their food, children extremely dissatisfied" (9.7%). The profiles demonstrated heterogeneity in SWFoL. Higher levels of SWFoL (mothers, fathers and adolescents) were associated with healthier eating habits. These results contribute to new studies that enable understanding of how families' healthy eating habits are part of improving quality of life.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed at reviewing food-based dietary guidelines (FBDGs) with content targeted at children and adolescents to present their main characteristics, thus enabling comparisons among countries. Design We conducted a search of the FBDGs available on the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) website, followed by a scoping review with a gray literature search to find FBDGs for children or adolescents non-listed on the FAO's website. Data extraction included the year of publication, language, and guidelines for the target group. Results From FAO website searches, 109 documents were found, and 17 of them could not be translated. The Scoping review search conducted in 5,190 articles, and none led to new guidelines, nor from the gray literature. Regarding the 92 FBDGs explored, 41 were specific for infants under 24 months old, children, and/or adolescents, and 51 were for the general population with information for the studied group. Twelve percent of the general FBDG and 35% of the specific ones have food icons. All of the guidelines were published after 2001. Latin America and the Caribbean were the regions that presented more specific FBDGs and the majority of countries with guidelines for fruits and vegetables. The information about fat (15 countries) and sugar (26 countries) consumption reduction is frequent. Reduction of sodium intake appears to be in the majority of guidelines after 2015. Food hygiene guidelines are recurrent in Latin American documents. NOVA classification was adopted in five countries and 21 countries approach recommendations for mealtimes. Both exclusive and continued breastfeeding guidance and healthy complementary feeding orientation are present in over 50% of the specific FBDG for infants and children under 24 months old. Conclusion Food-based dietary guidelines are diverse due to both the nutritional and political aspects of each region. Latin America stands out for its orientations for the studied group. Further studies should measure the possible impacts and comprehension of FBDGs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of obesity in adolescents has increased significantly in recent years. The growth of obesity is motivated by the association with modifiable behaviors, however, this behavioral are commonly evaluated individually, not considering the possibility of these factors coexisting in the individual. The purpose of this essay was to identify the coexistence of obesogenic behaviors among Brazilian adolescents and to assess the factors associated with the presence of these behaviors. METHODS This a cross-sectional, national, school-based study with data from the Study of Cardiovascular Risks in Adolescents (ERICA), totaling a sample of 71,552 Brazilian adolescents. To identify the coexistence of obesogenic behaviors in adolescents, the Principal Component Analysis has been performed. To assess the association between factors that influence the coexistence of modifiable behaviors in the pattern of obesogenic behavior, logistic regression was used. The magnitude of the associations was estimated by the Odds Ratio (OR), with the respective 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). RESULTS The component was characterized by a higher percentage of ultra-processed food intake, longer in front of screens, having a habit of snacking in front of the television, and not having the habit of eating breakfast. In the adjusted logistic model, it shows that female adolescents and who declare themselves black are more likely to belong to the third tertile of the pattern of obesogenic behavior. As for teenagers who sometimes or almost always or always have lunch or dinner with parents or guardians, who have longer hours of sleep and who live in economically disadvantaged regions have reduced chances of belonging to the third tertile of the pattern of obesogenic behavior. CONCLUSION The identification of obesogenic behavior patterns allows assertive interventions to eliminate or reduce these changeable behaviors, also aiming at the possibility of reducing obesity among adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The family environment influences food consumption and behaviours, which impact adolescent's eating habits, diet and health. Young individuals who frequently eat family meals are less likely to develop risk- and behaviour-related outcomes as obesity. AIM To assess the relationship between the family meal environment and food and macronutrient consumption in European adolescents. METHODS 1,703 adolescents aged 12.5-17.5 years (46.5% male) from the European HELENA cross-sectional study were selected. Sociodemographic variables and dietary intake using two non-consecutive self-reported 24-hour dietary recalls were collected from all the included participants. The relationship between family meals' environment and food and macronutrient consumption was analized using analysis of covariance. RESULTS Adolescents who used to take their main meals with their family were associated with high consumption of healthy foods and beverages (i.e. vegetables, fruit, milk, water) and low consumption of energy dense food and beverages as chocolate, savoury snacks, sugar or juices compared with those who used to eat alone, with friends or other people (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The company/people with whom adolescents consume their meal have an important influence on the adolescent's consumption of different types of food (especially at lunch). Family's environment during meals has been associated with a high consumption of healthy foods.

Abstract
Background The practice of eating together, commensality, is rarely explored in the context of childhood obesity treatment. This is noteworthy given long-standing debates about the physical, psychosocial, and societal benefits of meals, especially family meals. Moreover, as children with obesity experience weight bias and stigma both within and outside the home, it is important to examine meals as a locus of social exchange around food and the body. Our study is based on the premises that eating together (i) matters and (ii) occurs in different environments with diverse social organization, where food-related interactions create varying arrangements of individuals, groups, their statuses, and their actions. Method The study explores children’s experiences of meals in different social contexts. Thirty-two children (age 8–10 years) living in Sweden were interviewed, 4 years after they entered an obesity intervention trial. Thematic analysis was applied to the data. Results We thematized three meal types, with each meal type having two subthemes: (i) “The family meal”, with “Shared routines, rituals, and rules” and “Individual solutions and choices”; (ii) “The school meal”, with “Rules and norms of the school” and “Strategies of the child”; and (iii) “The friend meal”, with “Handling food that was disliked” and “Enjoyment of food”. These three different meal types carried different experiences of and knowledge about how they were socially organized. Conclusions While the children spoke about the family and school meals as meaningful, the friend meal stood out as particularly positive. Contrary to our expectations, the children did not express experiences of weight bias or obesity stigma around meals, nor did they speak negatively about parental control of their food intake. Our findings, especially regarding the friend meal, have implications for further research into commensality and social influences on eating among children with obesity, from early childhood into adolescence.

Abstract
Background. Whereas parental feeding styles (PFS) influence children’s diet, less is known about this relationship in adolescents. Methods. A cross-sectional study in 686 Costa Rican adolescents (13–18 years) evaluated 4 validated PFS scores: healthy eating verbal encouragement; scolding; directly controlling diet; instrumental/emotional. Diet was evaluated through 3-day food records, deriving a Traditional Costa Rica Adolescents Diet Score (TCRAD). Excess weight (EW) measured by BMI was dichotomized following standards. Regression-based mediation analysis estimated the overall and sex-stratified odds ratios of EW for natural direct (NDE), natural indirect (NIE), and total effects (TE) of the pathway PFS→TCRAD→EW. Results. A one-unit increase in the direct control PFS score was associated with higher EW odds overall [(TE: 1.55; 95% CI: 1.04–2.31; p-value = 0.033), (NDE: 1.52; 95% CI: 1.02–2.27; p-value = 0.039)], and in boys [(TE: 2.13; 95% CI: 1.04–4.38; p-value = 0.039), (NDE: 2.10; 95% CI: 1.03–4.31; p-value = 0.042)]. Non-significant mediation by TCRAD was observed for the healthy eating verbal encouragement PFS overall (p-value = 0.06). Associations for the instrumental/emotional and scolding PFS were not significant. Conclusions. Direct diet control from parents may contribute to adolescents’ excess weight, particularly among boys. Parents encouraging healthy eating might support adolescents’ healthy weight through a healthy diet. Longitudinal research should clarify the association between PFS and diet-related outcomes among diverse adolescents.

Abstract
A gluten-free (GF) food guide for children and youth (4-18 years) living with celiac disease (CD) has been developed and extensively evaluated by stakeholders, including registered dietitians. A case study analysis was conducted on data from 16 households of youth with CD to examine how factors related to parental food literacy, the home food environment, and food purchasing patterns may influence food guide uptake by Canadian youth with CD and their families. Households were of higher socioeconomic status, parents had good food literacy, and the home food availability of fruits, vegetables and GF grains was diverse. However, households also had a diverse supply of convenience foods and snack options. Youth reported consuming a larger proportion of these foods (>35% dietary intake) and had suboptimal diet quality. Dietary intake of fruits and vegetables were below GF plate model recommendations by over 30%. Despite limited economical barriers, good parental food literacy, and diverse food availability, meeting fruit and vegetable recommendations based on the pediatric GF food guide remains a major challenge. Findings inform that effective strategies and healthy public policies to support the uptake of GF food guide recommendations are needed to improve the health outcomes of youth with CD.

Abstract
Adolescents’ intake of vegetables and fruits is generally low, and many
demonstrate unhealthy eating behaviors. Food literacy may be key to improving
adolescents’ nutrition. However, the relationship between food literacy, fruit
and vegetable intake, and other healthy eating behaviors remains unclear, as
well as how these relationships may differ among boys and girls. This study
assessed the relationship between food literacy (including food skills and
cooking skills), vegetable and fruit consumption, and other eating behaviors of
adolescents. This cross-sectional study included 1,054 students, including 467
boys and 570 girls from five francophone high schools in New Brunswick, Canada.
Quantitative data on students’ food and cooking skills, vegetable and fruit
consumption, and other eating behaviors were collected with a self-reported
questionnaire. Multilevel regressions were used to assess the relationship
between food literacy, students’ consumption of vegetables and fruits, and other
eating behaviors. Better cooking skills were associated with healthier eating
behaviors and greater vegetable and fruit consumption for boys and girls. Better
food skills were also associated with healthier eating behaviors and greater
vegetable and fruit consumption among both genders. These findings highlight the
importance of improving food literacy among adolescents. Public health
interventions should focus on increasing cooking and food skills to improve
adolescents’ nutrition.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study analyzed the association between selected self-reported eating habits and perceived school performance in adolescents by gender. METHODS A cross-sectional analysis was conducted with data from a large representative sample of adolescents from 42 different countries. Participants answered questions about their weekly frequency of fruit, vegetable, sweets, and soft drink consumption, as well as the frequency of breakfast consumption and family meals. The adolescents subjectively rated their school performance compared to that of their classmates. Logistic regression models were adjusted for region, age, body mass index (z-score), socioeconomic status, physical activity, recreational screen time, and sleep difficulties. RESULTS Among the 46,455 (53.5% female, mean age of 13.7 ± 1.6 years) adolescents studied, 20.6% of males and 25.5% of females reported high perceived school performance. In the results of the fully adjusted analyses, the higher the frequency of all healthy eating habits studied, the higher the perceived school performance in both males and females. Specifically, both males and females reporting a higher frequency of fruit and vegetable consumption, a lower frequency of sweets and soft drink consumption, more frequent breakfast consumption, and more frequent family meals (breakfast and dinner) were more likely to perceive their school performance as higher compared to their classmates. In addition, having breakfast regularly on weekends and the frequency of family dinner were associated with better school performance in both males and females. CONCLUSIONS In summary, this study provide cross-sectional evidence on the association between healthy eating habits and perceived school performance. Considering that school performance is an indicator of healthy development in adolescence, our findings reinforce and extend the evidence on the importance of healthy eating at this stage of life.

Abstract
In Myanmar, the escalating prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and impaired glucose tolerance among adults was recently reported, with the highest prevalence in the Yangon Region. The aim of the present study was to identify the risk factors in dietary habits and their relationship with T2DM in urban Myanmar residents. We conducted a case–control study recruiting 300 individuals aged 25–74 years living in the Yangon Region, consisting of 150 newly diagnosed cases attending a diabetes clinic, and 150 controls, who were community residents and free of diabetes. The case group had a significantly higher consumption of noodles, fish, beans, fermented food and pickles, dried food, topping seasonings, and non-dairy milk products than the control group, whereas they had a lower vegetable intake (more than three servings/day) and fruit intake (more than three servings/day) than the control group. Furthermore, the case group exhibited a higher frequency of some dietary behaviors than the control group, such as (1) having meals with family, (2) skipping breakfast, and (3) eating out. The final model showed that topping seasonings (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 11.23, 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.08–40.90), more than three servings/day of vegetable intake (aOR 0.18, 95% CI 0.05–0.67), and having meals with family (aOR 2.23, 95% CI 1.05–4.71) were associated with diabetes. The study suggests that Myanmar’s characteristic dietary culture of topping their meals with salty seasonings and sauces and eating multiple dishes together as a family are risk factors associated with T2DM. Our findings may contribute recommendations and opportunities for the primary prevention of T2DM in urban Myanmar.

Abstract
This study found that family/shared meal routines increased from pre-COVID to during COVID-19. Engaging in family/shared meals during COVID-19 was associated with well-being in young adults. Engaging in family/shared meals was associated with healthy dietary consumption in young adults.
Background This study examined who is engaging in family/shared meals and associations between family/shared meal frequency and home food availability, dietary consumption, and emotional well-being among young adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods A rapid-response online survey was sent to participants in a ten-year longitudinal study (Eating and Activity over Time: EAT 2010–2018). A total of 585 young adults (mean age = 24.7 ± 2.0 years, 63.3% female) living with at least one family member completed the COVID-EAT (C-EAT) survey during the U.S. outbreak of COVID-19. Items assessed changes in family/shared meal frequency, eating behaviors, and emotional well-being. Regression models adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics examined associations between family/shared meal frequency and home food availability, dietary consumption, and emotional well-being. Results Participants reported an average of 4.6 ± 3.4 family/shared meals per week during COVID-19, a 0.5 meal/week increase from prior to the pandemic (p = .002). Family/shared meal frequency during COVID-19 differed by race/ethnicity, with Asian American participants being most likely to report only 1–2 family/shared meals per week. Family/shared meals during COVID-19 were associated with higher vegetable intake, greater availability of fruits, vegetables, and whole wheat bread in the home, lower levels of depressive symptoms and perceived stress, and greater perceived ability to manage stress in young adults. Conclusions Results suggest that engaging in a regular routine, such as family/shared meals, during COVID-19 may have protective associations with dietary health and emotional well-being for young adults. Results may inform practices/routines to offer protective benefits during public health crises such as the current pandemic.

Abstract
AIM: This study aimed to analyze the description of Indonesian undergraduate students’ food consumption patterns during the COVID-19 period.
METHODS: The design used was cross-sectional with random sampling technique. The correlation test was Chi-Square and analyzed using univariate. The respondents involved were 17–24 years old with 5924 persons; active undergraduate students. Questionnaires were distributed using Google form.
RESULTS: The results indicated a relationship between gender and major, education level, social status, and funds source (p = 0.000). However, sex and residence did not correlate (p = 0.16). The same was revealed between gender with consumption patterns, carbohydrates, animal protein, vegetable protein, vegetables, fruit, snacks, water, and supplements.
CONCLUSION: Overall, during the new normal period of pandemic COVID-19 era, student food consumption patterns could be categorized as healthier lifestyle changes. Thus, the undergraduate students are suggested to maintain a diverse and balanced diet to boost their immunity optimally.
