Abstract
BACKGROUND Social, familial, and physiological stressors may put maternal-infant bonding at risk. Therefore, it is plausible that the stressful conditions brought on by COVID-19 could influence maternal-infant bonding. This study aimed to elucidate the contribution of COVID-19-related experience to variance in maternal-infant bonding, beyond that of established risk factors and as moderated by social support. METHODS This longitudinal, multicenter study examined the relationship of demographic and obstetric variables, social support, postpartum depression, as well as COVID-19-related fear, exposure, and subjective difficulty with mother-infant bonding six months following birth. Participants (N = 246) were women who delivered during the pandemics' strict lockdown period and were recruited 10 weeks after a liveborn delivery and followed up six months later. RESULTS Relationship between fear of COVID-19 and maternal-infant bonding was moderated by social support: Amongst mothers with high levels of social support, fear of COVID-19 negatively predicted bonding. DISCUSSION Results indicate that social support, while overall a protective factor for mother-infant bonding, may lose its buffering effect when fear of COVID-19 is high. This relationship was maintained even when early bonding experiences such as forced separation and the risk incurred by postpartum depression were accounted for. Implications for providers are discussed.

Abstract
Background Breastfeeding can be a vital component for maternal and infant health, but successful breastfeeding may be especially difficult for mothers with spinal cord injury (SCI). No reliable research on prevalence or complications associated with breastfeeding for mothers with SCI currently exists. Methods Our systematic review aimed to answer the following: (1) What are the breastfeeding rates in women after SCI? (2) What are the rates and nature of postpartum complications reported by women with SCI in conjunction with breastfeeding? Results Ten studies were included; the reported rates at which women with SCI were able to breastfeed varied widely, ranging from 11% to 100%. Generally speaking, women with higher-level SCI (above T6) were less likely to breastfeed and would breastfeed less frequently than women with lower-level SCI and less frequently than women without SCI. Complications reported included problems with the let-down reflex, autonomic dysreflexia, and a higher incidence of postpartum depression in women with SCI. Conclusion More research on mothers with SCI is needed, especially matched-control research comparing mothers with and without SCI on successful breastfeeding and associated complications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between breastfeeding duration and neurodevelopment in children aged 2 to 3 years in a Chinese population. METHODS This study was based on a cross-sectional survey. The data were from the National Nutrition and Health Systematic Survey for children in China which was conducted from 2019 to 2020. Characteristics of parents and children and the breastfeeding duration were obtained using interview-administered questionnaires. Children's neuropsychological development was assessed by a trained child health care physician using the Child Psychological Development Scale. A multivariable linear regression model was used to analyze the association between breastfeeding duration and neuropsychological development. RESULTS A total 1290 children aged 2-3 years were included in the present analysis. In multivariable linear regression models, after adjustment for potential confounders, children who were breastfed for 7-12 months had a 3.59-point increase in gross motor development (β = 3.59; 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 1.23 to 6.34), a 3.73-point increase in fine motor development (β = 3.73; 95 % CI: 1.09 to 6.47), and a 2.87-point in language development (β = 2.87; 95 % CI: 1.12 to 5.31) compared with those who were never breastfed. Children who were breastfed for > 12 months had a 3.77-point increase in fine motor development (β = 3.77; 95 % CI: 0.98 to 6.86) compared with those who were never breastfed. CONCLUSIONS Longer breastfeeding duration was associated with increased gross motor, fine motor, and language scores in our study population. Mothers in China should be encouraged to initiate and continue breastfeeding.

Abstract
From the start of pregnancy, mother and child induce reciprocal neurobiological changes in the brain that will prove critical for neurodevelopment and survival of both. Molecular communication between mother and fetus is constantly active and persists even after the fetus starts to synthesize its hormones in late gestation. Intriguingly, some mother and fetus exchange cells remain in the other's brain and body with long-lasting effects and memories that do not follow the laws of classical genetics but involve complex epigenetic mechanisms. After childbirth, mother and child go through a transitional phase, a sort of limbo in which both will have a peculiar functioning profile, which is adaptive for contingencies but also renders them vulnerable. The interplay between these two "limbo" states allows for an easier transition to the subsequent phases of development. In this review, we will trace mother's and child's path from pregnancy to the months following birth and, in particular, unravel i) the key features of pregnancy and brain development and the reciprocal influences; ii) how a transitory pattern of functioning characterize mother and child, moving them toward more flexible and evolved forms; and iii) how mother and fetus act during childbirth to promote neuroprotection, pain reduction, and neurophysiological changes. Therefore, this review covers a wide range of topics, integrating neuroanatomical, neurological, biochemical, neurophysiological, and psychological studies in a meaningful way, trying to integrate them in a holistic view of the mother-child interface that is usually neglected.

Abstract
Background Prematurity significantly impacts neonatal health worldwide, necessitating effective interventions to improve outcomes for these vulnerable infants. While breastfeeding has emerged as a cornerstone of preterm care, its precise impact on neurodevelopment remains a subject of ongoing inquiry and debate. This systematic review aims to investigate the existing evidence in this area. Methods On December 17, 2023, online databases including PubMed, The Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, CNKI, VIP, CBM, and Wan Fang Data were searched. Comparisons were classified into several categories: never breastfeeding (Never-BF) versus exclusive breastfeeding, Never-BF versus any breastfeeding (Any-BF), predominant preterm formula (Pre-PTF) versus predominant breastfeeding (Pre-BF), and Pre-PTF versus predominant donor breast milk (Pre-DBM) groups. Randomized controlled trials and observational studies were analyzed separately through meta-analyses. Each study's risk of bias was assessed, and the GRADE system was utilized to evaluate the certainty of the findings. Results Sixteen studies met the inclusion criteria, comprising one RCT and 15 cohort studies. The key findings indicated that infants in the Any-BF groups demonstrated superior long-term cognitive scores compared to those in the Never-BF groups, particularly evident in infants assessed before 18 months in the Pre-BF groups versus Pre-PTF groups. A reduced risk of neurodevelopmental impairment was also observed in preterm infants in the Any-BF groups. Evidence regarding the effect of breastfeeding on motor development was inconclusive, except for potential motor improvement in extremely low birth weight infants in the Any-BF groups. Neither exclusive breastfeeding nor pre-DBM exhibited clear superiority over Pre-PTF in terms of neurodevelopmental outcomes for preterm infants. Caution is warranted due to potential publication bias impacting the assessment of breastfeeding's impact on motor skills. Conclusion Our systematic review supports current recommendations for breastfeeding in preterm infants, emphasizing its positive effects on cognitive abilities and reduced risk of neurodevelopmental disorders. Further studies are needed to clarify if DHM provides neurodevelopmental benefits comparable to maternal milk, as current evidence does not sufficiently address this question. Additionally, future investigations should prioritize refining our understanding of the influence of breastfeeding on motor development in this vulnerable population. Abstract
BACKGROUND Breastfeeding is a parenting practice that combines close intimate contact with the opportunity to be sensitive and responsive to the infant, and may have direct and indirect relations with infant attachment. However, researchers have produced inconsistent findings, suggesting there may be other mechanisms involved. Coparenting may play a significant role, as it has been consistently associated with mother-infant relationships. RESEARCH AIMS The aims of this study were to examine: (1) whether breastfeeding would be directly associated with infant-mother attachment; (2) whether this association was also indirect, through mothers' quality of caregiving; and (3) whether partners' coparenting support moderates breastfeeding's indirect association with attachment. METHODS This was a prospective, longitudinal study that drew data from a larger NIH-funded study on sleep and family relationships (R01HD052809). Mothers reported on their feeding practices and coparenting relationships. Independent observations were used to assess mothers' emotional availability toward infants. A separate team of observers assessed infant-mother attachment. RESULTS Exclusive breastfeeding during the first 6 months, and longer duration of any breastfeeding across the 1st year, were directly associated with more secure infant-mother attachment. These associations were also indirect, through maternal emotional availability. Coparenting was a significant moderator, such that the influence of longer breastfeeding duration on improved emotional availability, and, in turn, on more secure attachment, was significant only for mothers who perceived coparenting quality to be low. CONCLUSION Findings highlighted the importance of breastfeeding on both the quality of mothering and infant attachment, but also emphasized that coparenting support may be particularly important for mothers who are unable to breastfeed.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Establishing an adequate bond and attachment between a mother and child is essential for preventing pathologies and developing this relationship in the future. PURPOSE To identify the factors related to a disturbance of the mother-child bond or attachment. METHODS A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out with women with a biological child between 6 weeks and 18 months of age. The Mother-Child Bond-Attachment Questionnaire (VAMF, for its name in Spanish) was administered to measure the bond and postnatal attachment together with a questionnaire containing sociodemographic, psychosocial, and health variables referring to the mother and the newborn. RESULTS 1114 women participated. The multivariate analysis showed that skin-to-skin contact (aOR = 0.58; 95% CI: 0.37, 0.90) and breastfeeding (aOR = 0.55; 95% IC: 0.35, 0.86) reduce the probability of presenting a bond disturbance. Anxiety during pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium (aOR = 3.95; 95% CI: 2.57, 6.05) and postpartum complications (aOR = 1.60; 95% CI: 1.03, 2.48) increase the chance of having a bond disturbance. Skin-to-skin contact (aOR = 0.61; 95% CI: 0.38, 1.00), breastfeeding (aOR = 0.47; 95% CI: 0.27, 0.80,) and an older age of the infant (months) (aOR = 0.77: 95% CI: 0.72, 0.82) reduces the probability of presenting an attachment disturbance. CONCLUSIONS Skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding are associated with a lower probability of impaired bonding and attachment. Anxiety states during pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium, and complications after childbirth increase the probability of developing a bond disorder. The older the age of the infant, the lower the frequency of having an impaired attachment. IMPLICATIONS TO PRACTICE Identifying the factors associated with the establishment of the mother-child bond and attachment is essential for the development of prevention strategies and early identification of cases that may present alterations and avoid their consequences on the health of the mother and child.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Breastfeeding is associated with reduced postpartum depression, stronger parent-child relationships, and fewer behavioral disorders in early childhood. We tested the mediating roles of postpartum depression and parent-child relationship in the association between breastfeeding practices and child behavior. STUDY DESIGN We used standardized questionnaire data from a subset of the CHILD Cohort Study (n = 1,573) to measure postpartum depression at 6 months, 1 year and 2 years, parent-child relationship 1 year and 2 years, and child behavior at 5 years using the Child Behavior Checklist (range 0-100). Breastfeeding practices were measured at 3 months (none, partial, some expressed, all direct at the breast), 6 months (none, partial, exclusive), 12 months, and 24 months (no, yes). Confounders included birth factors, maternal characteristics, and socioeconomic status. RESULTS Breast milk feeding at 3 or 6 months was associated with - 1.13 (95% CI: -2.19-0.07) to -2.14 (95% CI: -3.46, -0.81) lower (better) child behavior scores. Reduced postpartum depression at 6 months mediated between 11.5% and 16.6% of the relationship between exclusive breast milk feeding at 3 months and better child behavior scores. Together, reduced postpartum depression at 1 year and reduced parent-child dysfunction at 2 years mediated between 21.9% and 32.1% of the relationship between breastfeeding at 12 months and better child behavior scores. CONCLUSION Postpartum depression and parent-child relationship quality partially mediate the relationship between breastfeeding practices and child behavior. Breastfeeding, as well as efforts to support parental mental health and parent-child relationships, may help to improve child behavior.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Parental behavior and infant sleep patterns can vary widely both within and between cultures and settings. Breastfeeding during the second half-year of infancy has been associated with frequent night waking, which is perceived as sleep problem among the Western societies. An understanding of sleeping patterns among breastfed infants during the second half-year of infancy is important in supporting continued breastfeeding. OBJECTIVES The study aimed to investigate the sleeping patterns among breastfed infants during second half-year of infancy. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study. Three hundred and forty-two mothers of 6-12 months old breastfed infants completed the questionnaires on socio-demographic factors, breastfeeding practices, and infant sleeping patterns, which were assessed by using the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire (BISQ). The Cox regression model was used to assess the factors that were associated with night sleep duration whereas demographic factors and breastfeeding practices that were associated with night waking frequency were investigated using the Poisson regression model. RESULTS On average, the breastfed infants slept for 11 h during the night and most infants were reported to have night waking (96.8%) and were breastfed at least once at night (93.5%). In the adjusted analyses, infants in the age group 9-12 months were less likely to sleep longer compared to infants in the 6-8 months age group [HR 1.52 95% CI (1.17, 1.98)]. A one-hour increase in daytime sleep and in night wakefulness increased the likelihood of waking up at night by 19% and 24%, respectively. Infants who had been vaccinated within the last 7 days and infants who were breastfed to sleep were more likely to have a shorter nighttime sleep duration. Nighttime breastfeeding frequency was significantly associated with a 17% increase in the likelihood of night waking [IRR 1.17 95% CI (1.13, 1.22)]. Infants who slept on their parents' bed were 1.28 times more likely to wake up at night compared to infants who slept in a separate room [IRR 1.28 95% CI (1.05, 1.59)]. Infants of parents who reported that their infants' sleep was not a problem were 34% less likely to wake up compared to infants of parents who reported that their infants' sleep was a problem [IRR 0.66 95% CI (0.49, 0.87)]. CONCLUSIONS FOR PRACTICE: Frequent night waking, bed sharing and night breastfeeding were common among 6-12 months old breastfed infants. Frequent night breastfeeding may lengthen an infant's nighttime sleep duration. The study findings indicate that adequate information and support should be given to breastfeeding mothers in relation to the sleeping pattern of breastfed infants in order to promote continued breastfeeding practices.

Abstract
Background Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) in the first 6 weeks postpartum is key to continued breastfeeding. This study aimed to explore the role of EBF-related predictors (particularly breastfeeding intention) in breastfeeding behavior among preterm mothers at week 6 postpartum based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB). Methods A total of 352 mothers of preterm infants were recruited, 340 of whom participated in this study. Prior to discharge, participants completed the Chinese versions of the modified Breastfeeding Attrition Predictive Tool, the Breastfeeding Knowledge Questionnaire (BKQ), the Infant Feeding Intention, and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Responses to the items of the Breastfeeding Behavioral Questionnaire (BBQ) were also collected by telephone at week 6 postpartum. The final analyses included 321 participants who completed the full two-wave data collection. Results The fitness indices of the modified TPB model were acceptable. Breastfeeding knowledge and EBF before discharge positively impacted breastfeeding intention, whereas depression had a negative impact. Before discharge, breastfeeding intention fully mediated the impacts of breastfeeding attitude, social and professional support, knowledge, depression, and EBF on breastfeeding behavior and partially mediated the influence of perceived breastfeeding control on breastfeeding behavior. Conclusion These findings indicate that TPB accurately predicts breastfeeding behavior among preterm mothers at week 6 postpartum, and breastfeeding intention is key to the above-mentioned EBF-related factors and breastfeeding behavior. The findings underline the need for further longitudinal studies and corresponding interventions for preterm mothers with a high risk of EBF attrition.

Abstract
The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) hypothesis describes how maternal stress exposures experienced during critical periods of perinatal life are linked to altered developmental trajectories in offspring. Perinatal stress also induces changes in lactogenesis, milk volume, maternal care, and the nutritive and non-nutritive components of milk, affecting short and long-term developmental outcomes in offspring. For instance, selective early life stressors shape the contents of milk, including macro/micronutrients, immune components, microbiota, enzymes, hormones, milk-derived extracellular vesicles, and milk microRNAs. In this review, we highlight the contributions of parental lactation to offspring development by examining changes in the composition of breast milk in response to three well-characterized maternal stressors: nutritive stress, immune stress, and psychological stress. We discuss recent findings in human, animal, and in vitro models, their clinical relevance, study limitations, and potential therapeutic significance to improving human health and infant survival. We also discuss the benefits of enrichment methods and support tools that can be used to improve milk quality and volume as well as related developmental outcomes in offspring. Lastly, we use evidence-based primary literature to convey that even though select maternal stressors may modulate lactation biology (by influencing milk composition) depending on the severity and length of exposure, exclusive and/or prolonged milk feeding may attenuate the negative in utero effects of early life stressors and promote healthy developmental trajectories. Overall, scientific evidence supports lactation to be protective against nutritive and immune stressors, but the benefits of lactation in response to psychological stressors need further investigation.

Abstract
This study evaluated the collateral, or unanticipated, impacts of Smart Beginnings (SB), a two-site, tiered intervention designed to promote responsive parenting and school readiness, on breastfeeding intensity in a low-income sample. Impact analyses for the SB intervention were conducted using an intent-to-treat design leveraging a two-arm random assignment structure. Mothers assigned to the SB intervention group were more than three times more likely to give breastmilk as the only milk source at infant age 6 months than mothers assigned to the control group at one site, an effect not evident at the other study site. As development and growth are the two most salient domains of child health, understanding how interventions impact subsequent parenting practices across both domains is critical to address long-term economic and racial/ethnic disparities. Implications of the findings are discussed for improving the efficacy of interventions based on paediatric primary care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is a priority for public health professionals to improve global breastfeeding rates, which have remained low in Western countries for more than a decade. Few researchers have addressed how maternal perceptions of birth experiences affect infant feeding methods. Furthermore, mixed results have been shown in research regarding breastfeeding and mother-child bonding, and many studies are limited by small sample sizes, representing a need for further investigation. PURPOSE We aimed to examine the relationship between subjective birth experiences and breastfeeding outcomes, and explored whether breastfeeding affected mother-infant bonding. METHODS 3,080 mothers up to three years postpartum completed a cross - sectional survey. RESULTS Mothers who had more positive birth experiences were more likely to report breastfeeding their babies. Moreover, mothers who perceived their birth as more positive were more likely to breastfeed their child for a longer period (over 9 months) than those who had more negative experiences. In line with recent research, breastfeeding behaviours were not associated with reported mother-infant bonding. CONCLUSIONS Mothers who reported better birth experiences were most likely to breastfeed, and breastfeed for longer. We find no evidence to suggest that feeding methods are associated with bonding outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND An early positive mother-child relationship is a central factor in the development of a psychologically balanced personality. The study aims to identify risk and protective factors for the development of a balanced maternal-infant postnatal attachment. We explored the association between maternal-infant attachment and prenatal and postnatal variables potentially implicated in the development of this early bond: maternal-foetal prenatal attachment, social support, memories of parental care, romantic attachment, dyadic adjustment, parity, breastfeeding, planning pregnancy, woman's and infant's age, and difficulty of delivery. METHODS 123 pregnant women participated in the longitudinal study; they were assessed on the MAAS, PBI, ECR-R, MSPSS (t1: pregnancy), MPAS (t2: 3-months postnatally), DAS , and CES-D (t1, t2). RESULTS Four significant predictors of maternal-infant postnatal attachment (MPAS) emerged: maternal-foetal prenatal attachment (β = 0.379, p < .001), anxiety in the romantic relationships (β=-0.237, p=0.019), prenatal and postnatal dyadic adjustment (t1, β=-0.323, p=0.025 ;t2, β=0.329, p=0.014) in the couple's relationship. These variables explained 20.2% of variance in mother-infant attachment (R2adjusted=0.202). DISCUSSION The study highlights associations of maternal-infant postnatal attachment with prenatal and postnatal relational variables and with other variables related to the woman's reproductive and pregnancy history. Clinical attention to these factors could help protect the well-being of mother and child.

Abstract
Smartphone use during parent-child interactions is highly prevalent, however, there is a lack of scientific knowledge on how smartphone use during breastfeeding or face-to-face interactions may modulate mothers’ attentive responsiveness towards the infant as well as maternal physiological arousal. In the present study, we provide the first evidence for the influence of the smartphone on maternal physiological responses and her attention towards the infant during breastfeeding and face-to-face interactions. Twenty breastfeeding mothers and their infants participated in this lab study during which electrodermal activity, cardiograph impedance, and gaze patterns were monitored in breastfeeding and face-to-face interactions with three conditions manipulating the level of maternal smartphone involvement. We report that mothers’ gaze toward their infants decreased when breastfeeding while using the smartphone compared to face-to-face interaction. Further, we show that greater maternal electrodermal activity and cardiac output were related to longer maternal gaze fixation toward the smartphone during breastfeeding. Finally, results indicate that mothers’ smartphone addiction levels were negatively correlated with electrodermal activity during breastfeeding. This study provides an initial basis for much required further research that will explore the influence of smartphone use on maternal biobehavioral responses in this digital age and the consequences for infant cognitive, emotional, and social development.

Purpose: To investigate whether parents should be present during screening examinations for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) by investigating the anxiety levels of parents using two different approaches. Methods: This cross-sectional and two-center study was carried out with the parents at the time of the first ROP screening examination of their premature infants. At one center, the parents accompanied the infants during the ROP examination (Group 1), and in the other center, they did not (Group 2). Anxiety levels were assessed with the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), which consists of the State Anxiety (STAI-S) and Trait Anxiety (STAI-T) subscales and a visual analog scale (VAS). Results: A total of 147 parents of 127 infants were included in the study. STAI-T and -S levels were 40.5 ± 8 and 37.9 ± 7.5, respectively, in Group 1 and 39.6 ± 8.1 and 39.4 ± 9.1 in Group 2 before the examination. There were no statistically significant differences in terms of these values between the two groups (P > 0.05). The state anxiety levels increased by an average of 1.7 ± 8 in Group 1 and reached 39.6 ± 10.1 after the examination. In Group 2, these levels decreased by an average of − 2.7 ± 7.5 points to a score of 36.4 ± 10.3. This difference was found to be statistically significant (P = 0.001). A similar pattern was observed in the evaluation of the VAS data. Conclusion: As a preliminary opinion, it may be more appropriate for parents to not participate in screening examinations, but single-center controlled studies are required to confirm the results.

Breastfeeding intention and trait mindfulness during pregnancy. Midwifery 2021; 101:103064. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Breastfeeding has been associated with many health benefits for both infant and mother. Trait mindfulness during pregnancy may have a beneficial impact on breastfeeding intention. The current study aimed to examine whether trait mindfulness during pregnancy was associated with antenatal breastfeeding intention. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS The current study is part of a large prospective population-based cohort study among pregnant women in the south of the Netherlands. MEASUREMENTS A subsample of participants completed the Three Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire-Short Form at 22 weeks of pregnancy and a question on their breastfeeding intention at 32 weeks of pregnancy (N=790). Moreover, the Edinburgh Depression Scale and Tilburg Pregnancy Distress scale were completed at 32 weeks of pregnancy to assess levels of distress. FINDINGS Univariate analyses showed that women with breastfeeding intention during pregnancy had significantly higher scores on the mindfulness facet non-reacting (p<.001, medium effect size) and significantly lower scores on acting with awareness (p=.035, small effect size). A subsequent multiple logistic regression analysis showed that only non-reacting remained significantly associated with antenatal breastfeeding intention (OR=1.09, 95% CI [1.03, 1.15], p=.001), after controlling for confounders. Women who eventually initiated breastfeeding had significantly higher non-reacting scores (p<.001, small to medium effect size). KEY CONCLUSIONS The mindfulness facet non-reacting was found to be associated with antenatal breastfeeding intention. More research is needed to confirm our results, since the current study is one of the first assessing the possible relation of trait mindfulness during pregnancy and breastfeeding intention. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Mindfulness-based programs during pregnancy could be helpful in improving non-reacting in pregnant women, which may enhance breastfeeding intention and ultimately the initiation of breastfeeding.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine how expressed milk feeding diverges from feeding at the breast in its association with neurodevelopment and behavior. We hypothesized that longer and exclusive feeding at the breast only (ie, no formula, no feeding expressed milk) would be associated with the optimal cognitive developmental, executive function, and eating behaviors and that expressed milk feeding would be associated with less-optimal outcomes. STUDY DESIGN The Moms2Moms cohort (Ohio, US) reported infant feeding practices at 12 months postpartum and children's global cognitive ability, executive function, and eating behaviors at 6 years. Linear and log-binomial regression models estimated associations with durations of feeding at the breast, expressed milk, human milk (modes combined), and formula. RESULTS Among 285 participants, each month of exclusive feeding at the breast only was associated with a decreased risk of clinically meaningful executive function (working memory) deficit (adjusted relative risk [RR] 0.78, 95% CI 0.63-0.96) but was unassociated with inhibition (adjusted RR 0.92, 95% CI 0.85-1.01). Feeding expressed milk was not clearly related to executive function outcomes. No associations with global cognitive ability were observed. Weak associations were observed with eating behaviors for some feeding practices. CONCLUSIONS Feeding at the breast may offer advantages to some aspects of executive function that expressed milk may not. Large, prospective studies exploring mechanisms could further distinguish the effect of feeding mode from that of nutrients.

Abstract
Introduction: Evaluation of the safety of taking lamotrigine (LTG) during lactation in breastfed infants varies according to the information sources. As it is possible that prescribers may avoid prescribing LTG despite of it being one of the essential drugs, more information needs to be accumulated to facilitate its use. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively compared the safety of LTG during the lactation period in 20 pairs of mothers and infants with 20 pairs as the control group. Results: The mean dose of LTG in 20 mothers was 161.1 mg/day (range: 50-400 mg/day). None of the infants showed a neonatal withdrawal syndrome score of 2 or more up to 1 month after delivery. Although drowsiness (n = 3), skin rash (n = 11), jaundice (n = 8), heart murmur (n = 1), poor suckling (n = 1), and retractive breathing (n = 1) were observed in infants, none of these adverse events were serious and the infants recovered. Nineteen of 20 pairs could continue lactation until 1 month after delivery. One pair discontinued breastfeeding because of pain in the mother's nipples. All pairs could continue maternal medication. We then compared the results with those of the control group. There were no significant differences in the presence of adverse events between the LTG and control groups. Conclusion: These data suggest that taking low to moderate doses of LTG during the lactation period might be relatively safe, at least for a period of 1 month after delivery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While numerous studies have demonstrated maternal depression's influence on infant brain development, few studies have examined the changes that occur as a consequence of co-occurring experiential factors that affect quality of mother and infant affectionate touch as well as infant temperament and neurophysiological systems. The aim of the study was to examine the interactive effects of maternal depression and breastfeeding on mother and infant affectionate touch and infant temperament and cortical maturation patterns across early development. METHODS 113 mothers and their infants participated when infants were 1 and 3 months of age. Questionnaires to assess maternal depressive symptoms, feeding, and temperament were completed. Tonic EEG patterns (asymmetry and left and right activity) were collected and the dyads were video-recorded during feeding to assess mother and infant affectionate touch patterns. RESULTS Data analysis showed that EEG activity and mother-infant affectionate touch differed as a function of mood and feeding method. Notably, only infants of depressed mothers that bottle-fed showed right frontal EEG asymmetry and attenuated change in the left frontal region across 3 months. Breastfeeding positively impacted affectionate touch behaviors and was associated with increased left and decreased right frontal EEG activation even for depressed groups. Furthermore, a model incorporating physiology, maternal depression, touch, temperament, and feeding indicated significant prediction for infant affectionate touch (with breastfeeding and affectively positive temperament demonstrating the strongest prediction). Con-clusion: The findings suggest that breastfeeding and the infant's positive temperament influence mother-infant affectionate touch patterns and result in neuroprotective outcomes for infants, even those exposed to maternal depression within early development.

Abstract
Schooling of children between 0 and 3 years old involves a process of adaptation and increases their exposure to infectious diseases, which leads to school absenteeism. Breastfeeding facilitates the development of secure attachment and protects the infant against infections. This study aimed to determine whether breastfeeding facilitates the adaptation of infants between 0 and 3 years old to early childhood center and decreases school absenteeism. A cross-sectional study was carried out by collecting data through a questionnaire, which was filled out by the parents and the childcare professionals. 160 infants participated. 40% of the infants who received infant formula from birth showed dependency behaviors (inconsolable crying or do not leave the caregiver for a long time) at the time of pick-up from the center, compared with 10%, 2.7%, and 2.6% of children breastfed between 0 and 6 months, and more than 6 and 12 months, respectively (p = 0.001). The interquartile range of absenteeism days per episode was 2-3 days for infants fed infant formula versus 1-2 days for those who were breastfed for more than 12 months (p = 0.041). Breastfeeding seems to be associated with fewer dependency behaviors at the time of collection and with fewer days of absence.

Abstract
Unexpected early birth of an infant may affect the attachment formation of mother-child dyads. This longitudinal study aimed to explore mother-infant attachment patterns of very preterm (VPT) and preterm (PT) infants compared to their term-born peers in a non-Western country. Neurodevelopmental outcomes of infants, maternal anxiety and depressive symptoms, and sociodemographic features were evaluated to explore their effects on attachment. Eighteen VPT, 11 PT, 11 term infants and their mothers participated. Observations of attachment patterns and neurodevelopmental assessments were performed at 18 and 24 months of corrected age. This study identified a change in attachment patterns of VPT infants over time such that VPT infants tended to have less insecure attachment patterns with their mothers at the end of the infancy period. While motor and language development scores were associated with attachment patterns at 18 months, models predicting attachment patterns were no longer significant at 24 months. Therefore, change in VPT infants' developmental outcomes and attachment patterns over time suggests that preterm birth itself is not necessarily a risk factor for developing insecure attachment patterns; yet, developmental delays may account for insecure attachment patterns. It is suggested that efforts to promote developmental outcomes of preterm infants may improve mother-child attachment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Extensive evidence indicates that the quality of parent-child attachment is related to later socio-emotional and physical health outcomes. Yet, despite its clinical relevance, the parent-child attachment concept has been inconsistently applied across the disciplines of nursing, medicine and psychology and is often conflated with parent-child bonding in nursing literature. OBJECTIVES To provide readers with a critical analysis of the concept of parent-child attachment. Using a principle-based concept analysis, we clarify how parent-child attachment is understood from a multidisciplinary perspective to advance the use of this concept in nursing practice.Concept Description: Attachment is an affectionate, mutually satisfying relationship between a child and a caregiver that serves the purpose of making the child feel safe, secure, and protected. DISCUSSION In this principle-based concept analysis, each definitional (i.e., epistemological, pragmatic, linguistic, and logical) principle contributes to an understanding of the strengths and limitations of the state of science about this concept. The discussion highlights how applying the concept of parent-child attachment security may offer exciting and promising opportunities for nursing clinical work with families. CONCLUSION The understanding of the concept of parent-child attachment differs among disciplines of nursing, medicine and psychology and offers exciting and promising opportunities for clarity and collaborative, multi-disciplinary work.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neonatal male circumcision is a painful skin-breaking procedure that may affect infant physiological and behavioral stress responses as well as mother-infant interaction. Due to the plasticity of the developing nociceptive system, neonatal pain might carry long-term consequences on adult behavior. In this study, we examined whether infant male circumcision is associated with long-term psychological effects on adult socio-affective processing. METHODS We recruited 408 men circumcised within the first month of life and 211 non-circumcised men and measured socio-affective behaviors and stress via a battery of validated psychometric scales. RESULTS Early-circumcised men reported lower attachment security and lower emotional stability while no differences in empathy or trust were found. Early circumcision was also associated with stronger sexual drive and less restricted socio-sexuality along with higher perceived stress and sensation seeking. LIMITATIONS This is a cross-sectional study relying on self-reported measures from a US population. CONCLUSIONS Our findings resonate with the existing literature suggesting links between altered emotional processing in circumcised men and neonatal stress. Consistent with longitudinal studies on infant attachment, early circumcision might have an impact on adult socio-affective traits or behavior.

Abstract
Eating problems are common among children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), but it is unknown to what extent infant eating behavior is associated with later autistic traits. As eating behavior is currently not included in ASD screening instruments, it is important to evaluate whether infant eating behavior predicts later autistic traits and might therefore be used to enhance the early detection of ASD. We investigated the association of breastfeeding and eating behavior during infancy with later autistic traits in the population-based Generation R cohort. We included 3546 mother-child dyads with maternal reports on feeding and eating at age two months and autistic traits at six years. Eating behavior was assessed with seven items on specific eating habits and the Social Responsiveness Scale was used to evaluate autistic traits. Covariates included child sex, and maternal psychopathology and autistic traits. Linear regression analyses showed that being formula fed at two months was associated with a higher autistic trait score at six years (adjusted B = 0.07; 95% CI: 0.00-0.14). Children who were drinking only small quantities (adjusted B = 0.17, 95% CI: 0.04-0.30) and were hungry/not satisfied (adjusted B = 0.23, 95% CI: 0.08-0.39) at age two months also had a higher autistic traits score at age six years. We found no interactions with sex or breastfeeding. This study shows that eating behavior during infancy is related with autistic traits in childhood. Although the associations were fairly small, these findings suggest that early-life eating problems might be relevant for early detection of ASD and a potential addition to ASD-specific screening instruments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Maternal-infant feeding interactions are a primary context for engagement between mothers and their infants, and constitute a unique space in which reciprocity, attunement and maternal sensitivity can be expressed. Increasingly, research demonstrates the importance of the psychological and social nature of the feeding context, and how it may be affected by maternal mental state, feeding skills and sensitivity. As such, feeding interactions may provide useful contexts for observations of maternal sensitivity, reflecting well on day-to-day maternal sensitivity. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES This paper is a post hoc examination of the impact of an intervention on maternal sensitivity during a feeding interaction when the infants were 6 months old. PARTICIPANTS A total of 449 women consented to participate in the original intervention and were randomly assigned to the intervention or control groups. Mothers and infants were assessed during pregnancy, and then at 2, 6, 12 and 18 months of infant age. At the 6 month follow-up visit, 79% (354 out of 449) of the participants were retained. Post hoc analyses were conducted on the original sample to determine breastfeeding status. Sixty-nine percent of the women completed the feeding observation at the 6 months follow-up visit, of which 47% reported exclusively breastfeeding and 22% reported bottle-feeding. RESULTS Results demonstrated that during a feeding interaction, maternal sensitivity was significantly improved among non-breastfeeding mothers who received the intervention. Particularly, maternal responsiveness to infant cues and synchronous interactions was higher among non-breastfeeding intervention mothers compared to control group mothers. The results also show that non-breastfeeding mothers who received the intervention were significantly less intrusive in their interactions with their infants. CONCLUSION The intervention had particular beneficial effects for mothers who were not breastfeeding and suggest that the intervention offered a protective effect for non-breastfeeding mothers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Maternal mental well-being and social circumstances during pregnancy and early childhood impact the child's well-being and development. Supportive and sensitive parenting is one of the strongest predictors of positive emotional, social and behavioral outcomes for the child. Knowledge is needed about how to detect and support vulnerable families already during pregnancy and in the postnatal period. The aim of this study is to assemble and evaluate an interdisciplinary cross-sectoral intervention to promote maternal sensitivity among women with psychological or social vulnerabilities. METHODS/DESIGN This randomized controlled trial tests the efficacy of an intervention program in the perinatal period compared to care as usual in enhancing maternal sensitivity in a group of psychologically or socially vulnerable women in the Capital Region of Denmark. The intervention consists of four components: 1) detecting symptoms of mental illness in vulnerable pregnant women and initiating treatment if indicated, 2) strengthening parenting skills using the Circle of Security Parenting program, 3) supporting breastfeeding, and 4) sharing knowledge and organizing treatment pathways for families across sectors. Seventy-six families will be randomly assigned to the intervention or care-as-usual. Data will be obtained at study inclusion at 3-5 months of pregnancy, eight weeks after childbirth, and nine months after childbirth. The primary outcome is maternal sensitivity. Secondary outcomes include infant's socio-emotional development, parents' mentalization, parental stress, depressive symptoms, and parental wellbeing. Qualitative data will provide insight into the implementation process. DISCUSSION This paper presents the rational and background for developing the intervention. Furthermore, the design and protocol of the randomized controlled trial. It is hypothesized that the intervention will be associated with positive changes in primary and secondary outcomes. If effective, the intervention will provide insights into prenatal risk profiles among an identified group of psychosocial vulnerable women important for early screening and point to effective preventive interventions that can support women in the perinatal period, increase maternal sensitivity and promote positive child development -starting before the child is born. Abstract
Aims and objectives: The aim of this systematic review was to summarize the key findings of empirical studies assessing the influence of maternal depression on child attachment security measured before 24 months after birth. Method: The study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement guidelines. A literature search was conducted on the EBSCO (Academic Search Complete; Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition; MEDLINE; PsycARTICLES) and PubMed databases, with infant attachment AND depression as search terms with Boolean operators. Study design or sample size did not affect inclusion. After screening, 29 of the 1510 unique publications originally identified were included in the review. Results: The studies reveal an equivocal association between maternal depression and child attachment security. Our findings indicate that depression had a significant influence on the attachment style almost only when diagnosed by structured interview: Depression measured by self-descriptive questionnaires was unrelated to attachment style. Furthermore, postpartum depression was found to be significant only when measured up to six months after childbirth. Conclusion: The relationship between maternal depression and infant attachment is both complex and dynamic, and the possible negative effects of depression might be compensated by maternal involvement in childcare. Therefore, further studies in this area should employ a reliable methodology for diagnosing depression and a suitable time point for measuring it; they should also adopt a multifactorial and prospective approach. It is important to note that breastfeeding/formula feeding was omitted as a factor in the majority of studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the associations between breastfeeding intensity and underexplored features of maternal-child interaction quality over and above the influence of breastfeeding initiation. METHODS The current study leveraged an on-going, multisite randomized controlled trial of a tiered parenting program for 462 Medicaid-eligible mothers and their infants in the United States. We examined whether breastfeeding intensity and exclusivity was associated with observed maternal sensitivity, intrusiveness, and detachment, as well as self-reported maternal verbal responsiveness, 6 months infant age. Analyses controlled for breastfeeding initiation, demographics, and early parenting experiences. RESULTS Higher intensity breastfeeding at 6 months was significantly related to higher maternal sensitivity (β = 0.12, p = 0.004) and lower maternal intrusiveness (β = -0.10, p = 0.045). There was no significant association between breastfeeding intensity at 6 months and detachment (β = -0.02, no significant [ns]) or self-reported verbal responsiveness (β = 0.11, ns). Results were the same when intensity was measured as a dichotomous indicator for exclusive breastfeeding. Effect sizes were small-to-moderate, ranging from Cohen's d = 0.26 to 0.31. Associations did not vary by site, race/ethnicity, infant difficultness, or household poverty. CONCLUSION The finding that breastfeeding intensity was significantly and independently associated with maternal sensitivity and intrusiveness is novel in the literature on low-income families from the United States. These findings have implications for breastfeeding promotion strategies and indicate that future research should explore synergistic or spillover effects of interventions aimed at maternal-child interaction quality into the infant feeding domain, particularly in the primary care setting.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to psychometrically test the Adaptation to the Late Preterm Infant when Breastfeeding Scale (ALPIBS) and also to test how a mother's self-efficacy predicts adaptation to a late preterm infant when breastfeeding. This study had a longitudinal and prospective design, and data collection was consecutive. Mothers (n = 105) with infants born between 340/7 and 366/7 weeks were recruited from a neonatal intensive care unit or a maternity unit. The ALPIBS was developed using exploratory factor analysis, and the association between breastfeeding self-efficacy and ALPIBS score was examined using linear regression analysis. The Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form instrument was used to measure self-efficacy in breastfeeding. A higher degree of self-efficacy was significantly associated with a higher degree of adaptation to the late preterm infant's breastfeeding behavior (P < .001). We identified 4 separate underlying factors measured by 11 items in the ALPIBS: (A) breastfeeding is a stressful event; (B) the infant should breastfeed as often as he or she wants; (C) a mother has to breastfeed to be a good mother; and (D) it is important to ensure control over the infant's feeding behavior. There is a link between self-efficacy and ALPIBS score, and self-efficacy is a modifiable factor that influences breastfeeding.

Abstract
This study investigated whether breastfeeding predicts offspring's dispositional compassion and empathy from early adulthood to middle age. The parents of the participants (N = 1,394) of the Young Finns study answered questions about breastfeeding in 1983, and the participants' compassion and empathy were evaluated in 1997-2012 (participants were aged 20-50 years). Breastfeeding did not predict the course of compassion or empathy in adulthood at the age of 20-50 years. The associations remained non-significant, when adjusted for age, gender, socioeconomic factors, and a wide range of characteristics of the family environment (including mother's gestational age; premature birth; birth weight; number of other children at home; parental mental disorder; parental relationship status; parental postnatal smoking; parental postnatal alcohol use; parenting behavior; and child's externalizing behavior). In conclusion, breastfeeding seems not to predict offspring's compassion or empathy in adulthood. The findings may present a hopeful perspective for children growing up with non-breastfeeding caregivers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In the popular and scientific literature an association between breastfeeding and attachment is often supposed although this has not been systematically investigated. This is the first review that provides a systematic overview of the current state of research on the association between breastfeeding and attachment. The objective is to determine whether breastfeeding is associated with child attachment as well as if maternal attachment is associated with breastfeeding behaviour. DESIGN A systematic electronic literature search for English language articles published from 1963 to 2019 using the databases Web of Science, PubMed, PsycInfo, and PsycArticles was conducted. Studies were included if (1) the association between breastfeeding and attachment of the child or maternal attachment style and breastfeeding was investigated, (2) participants were mothers or mother-child dyads, and (3) quantitative measures of breastfeeding and attachment were used. Study quality was rated using the NIH Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies. PARTICIPANTS Studies examining mothers or mother-child dyads were reviewed. Sample sizes varied between N = 60 and N = 8900 participants. On average, mothers were between 27.56 and 32.50 years old. FINDINGS Eleven studies were eligible for inclusion. Of seven studies examining breastfeeding and child attachment, four found that a longer duration of breastfeeding was significantly associated with higher levels of attachment security after controlling for various covariates. No significant differences in attachment security between breastfeeding and bottle-feeding were reported, but one study found higher levels of attachment disorganization for bottle-feeding, although mean levels were below a clinically relevant level. The initiation of breastfeeding directly after childbirth was not related to child attachment. Of four studies examining maternal attachment and breastfeeding, three found a significant association between secure attachment of the mother and breastfeeding behaviour. Secure attached mothers initiated breastfeeding more often and preferred breast- over bottle-feeding than insecure attached mothers. Mixed results were found for breastfeeding duration. Most studies had limitations regarding adequate sample size, and valid and reliable measurement of breastfeeding. KEY CONCLUSIONS The findings provide some evidence that breastfeeding might contribute to child attachment security. Furthermore, maternal attachment style might play a role in breastfeeding behaviour. However, more prospective studies are needed to draw a solid conclusion. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE With regard to breastfeeding recommendations, health professionals should be aware of and communicate towards clients that the effect of breastfeeding on child attachment might be rather small. Screening of maternal attachment style as a part of maternity practice could be useful to support insecure attached mothers experiencing breastfeeding difficulties.

Abstract
Background: Research examining the relationship between postpartum anxiety and maternal bonding is limited by the use of general measures of anxiety which may predict perinatal outcomes less effectively than childbearing specific tools. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the predictive validity of the Postpartum Specific Anxiety Scale [PSAS] and examine whether it is a more effective predictor of maternal bonding than general measures of anxiety. Methods: Two hundred and sixty one mothers (≤6-months postpartum) completed the PSAS alongside general anxiety and depression measures. Maternal bonding was examined via the Postpartum Bonding Questionnaire [PBQ] two-weeks later. Results: Hierarchical regression models demonstrated that higher levels of postpartum specific anxiety were associated with impaired overall bonding scores, and subscales of impaired general bond, rejection and anger, and infant focused anxieties. As hypothesised, the PSAS predicted unique variance in maternal bonding in these domains after controlling for general measures of anxiety and depression. Conclusion: These findings provide further evidence to support the predictive utility of the PSAS and the use of childbearing-specific measures of mood when predicting perinatal outcomes.

Abstract
Our objective was to examine the differential effects of antenatal breastfeeding intention (BI) and breastfeeding practice (BP) on maternal postnatal responsiveness. We conducted a secondary analysis of longitudinal data from a subsample of 962 mother-infant dyads from a U.K.-based birth cohort study the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. Exposures were BI and BPs measured at 32 weeks of gestation and 18 months' postpartum. The outcome was maternal responsiveness assessed at 12 months' postpartum. We used logistic regression analyses unadjusted and adjusted for confounders. Intention to breastfeed was associated with increased odds of postnatal maternal responsiveness independent of BP, adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 2.34, 95% CI [1.42, 3.86]. There was no evidence that BP was an independent predictor of maternal responsiveness, OR = 0.93, 95% CI [0.55, 1.57]. Life-course epidemiology analyses demonstrated that maternal responsiveness is most positive when both BI and BP are present. This is the first population-based study to provide evidence that BI during pregnancy is more strongly associated with maternal postnatal responsiveness than is BP. Further research is needed to understand the determinants of BI in pregnancy and its relationships with maternal responsiveness.

Abstract
Background: There is substantial evidence that postpartum prophylaxis with lithium lowers the rate of relapse in bipolar disorder. However, it is contraindicated during breastfeeding due to the high variability of the transfer into breast milk. Aims: We conducted a systematic review of the current evidence of studies assessing the transfer of lithium to lactating infants and short-term infant outcomes. Methods: An a priori protocol was designed based on PRISMA guidelines. Searches in PubMed and LactMed were conducted until September 2018. Studies assessing lithium pharmacokinetic parameters and short-term infant outcomes were included. Quality was assessed using a checklist based on international guidelines (i.e., FDA). Results: From 344 initial studies, 13 case reports/series with 39 mother-child dyads were included. Only 15% of studies complied with ≥50% of the items on the quality assessment checklist. Infants breastfeed a mean (SD) of 58.9 (83.3) days. Mean maternal lithium dose was 904 (293) mg/day, corresponding lithium plasma/serum concentration was 0.73(0.26) mEq/L, and breast milk concentration was 0.84(0.14) mEq/L. Mean infant lithium plasma/serum concentration was 0.23(0.26) mEq/L. Twenty-six (80%) infants had concentrations ≤0.30 mEq/L without adverse effects. Eight (20%) showed a transient adverse event (i.e., acute toxicity or thyroid alterations). All of them were also prenatally exposed to lithium monotherapy or polytherapy. Conclusion: The current evidence comes from studies with a degree of heterogeneity and of low-moderate quality. However, it identifies areas of improvement for future clinical lactation studies of lithium and provides support for some clinical recommendations.

Abstract
Prenatal and postpartum anxiety may impair maternal functioning and disrupt mother-infant behaviors including breastfeeding. The objective of this narrative review is to examine the association between maternal anxiety from pregnancy to 12 mo postpartum and breastfeeding initiation, duration, and exclusivity. Using a combination of Medical Subject Headings terms and text words, relevant studies were identified through PubMed and PsycINFO. Studies that were conducted in high-income countries, assessed anxiety during gestation and/or postpartum through a standardized measure, and evaluated the impact of anxiety on any of the primary outcomes were included. Sixteen studies met the eligibility criteria although they varied greatly in methodological rigor. A negative association between postpartum anxiety and breastfeeding initiation, duration, and exclusivity was suggested. No associations were found between prenatal anxiety and breastfeeding initiation or exclusivity. Evidence is mixed regarding the association between prenatal anxiety and breastfeeding duration. All studies included in the review were of low or very low quality. Although there was consistency in the association between maternal anxiety and breastfeeding outcomes in the included studies, future studies with greater methodological rigor are needed to determine the extent of the relation between prenatal and/or postpartum anxiety and breastfeeding outcomes.

Abstract
While the nutritional and physical health benefits of breastfeeding are well established, accumulating research demonstrates the far-reaching psychological effects of breastfeeding on children and their mothers. Here, we provide a non-exhaustive review of the empirical evidence, showing that breastfeeding impacts children's brain, cognitive, and socio-emotional development. In mothers, research is presented indicating that breastfeeding influences mood, affect, stress, and maternal care. The current review aims to provide a broad overview of existing findings on the psychological effects of breastfeeding, highlighting the important role that breastfeeding plays across several dimensions of psychological functioning. We also discuss the potential mechanisms that may underpin the observed effects, provide a constructive commentary on the limitations of the existing work, and put forth some considerations when evaluating this line of research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The relationship between breastfeeding and maternal depression in later life has not yet been investigated. We examined whether the number of breastfed infants or the period of breastfeeding influenced maternal depression in postmenopausal women. METHODS We analyzed 1,372 parous postmenopausal women aged ≥ 50 years who had participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2014. Depression was diagnosed using the Patient Health Questionnaire 9, with scores of 10 or higher indicating depression. Logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the relationships between breastfeeding and postmenopausal depression. RESULTS Women with a moderate (2-3) or high (4-12) number of breastfed infants had 65% [odds ratio (OR) = 0.35, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.19-0.65] and 77% (OR = 0.23, 95% CI = 0.10-0.55) decreased risks of depression, respectively, compared to those with low numbers of infants (0-1). Women who breastfed their infants for long periods (47-432 months) had 67% (OR = 0.33, 95% CI = 0.16-0.68) decreased risk of depression, compared to those who breastfed for short periods (0-23 months). The risk of depression decreased by 29% (OR = 0.71, 95% CI = 0.58-0.87) for each additional infant breastfed and by 9% (OR = 0.91, 95% CI = 0.82- < 1.00) for each additional year of breastfeeding. The population-attributable fraction of depression associated with < 2 infants breastfed was 17.3% (95% CI = 14.2-20.3%), while the fraction associated with a period of breastfeeding < 24 months was not significant. CONCLUSIONS Women with more breastfed infants or longer period of breastfeeding are at decreased risk of depression in the postmenopausal period.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Potential effects of breast feeding on children's behaviour remains an elusive debate given inherent methodological challenges. Propensity score matching affords benefits by ensuring greater equivalence on observable social and health determinants, helping to reduce bias between groups. OBJECTIVES We examined whether the duration of breast feeding had an impact on children's externalising and internalising behaviours. STUDY DESIGN A cohort study (Encuesta Longitudinal de la Primera Infancia cohort) that included 3037 Chilean families who were enrolled in 2010. Follow-up data was collected in 2012. SETTING General community. PARTICIPANTS Population-based sample. Eligibility criteria: children born full-term with complete data on matching variables. Matching variables included: healthcare system as a proxy of income, presence of a partner/spouse in the household, maternal age, educational level, IQ, working status, type of work, diagnosis of prenatal depression by a healthcare professional, smoking during pregnancy, delivery type, child sex, weight at birth, incubation following delivery, and child age. EXPOSURE Duration of breast feeding. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Externalising and internalising problems assessed using the Child Behaviour Checklist. RESULTS Matched results revealed benefits of any breast feeding, up to 6 months, on emotional reactivity and somatic complaints (mean difference of -1.00, 95% CI, -1.84 to -0.16 and -1.02, 95% CI, -1.76 to -0.28, respectively). Children breast fed between 7 and 12 months also had reduced scores on emotional reactivity, in addition to attention problems (mean difference of -0.86, 95% CI, -1.66 to -0.06 and -0.50, 95% CI, -0.93 to -0.07, respectively). No benefits were observed for children breast fed 13 months or more. CONCLUSION Reduced internalising difficulties and inattention were found in children breast fed up to a year, suggesting that breast feeding may have beneficial impacts on these areas of development. The magnitude of effect was modest. Extended durations of breast feeding did not appear to offer any benefits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breastfeeding is an important element of motherhood with a preterm infant, but the role of maternal emotions in relation to breastfeeding is vague. PURPOSE To describe maternal emotions regarding and insights into breastfeeding during the first year after a preterm birth. METHODS In total, 80 mothers of preterm infants (<35 gestational weeks) participated in this secondary analysis of a larger study. The data were collected with an open question at discharge and 3, 6, and 12 months after the expected birth date and analyzed using thematic analysis. FINDINGS A typology of breastfeeding mothers of preterm infants was created. The group of survivors wished to be breastfeeding mothers, but after some unexpected difficulties, they had to give up their dream. The disappointment alleviated with time, but some of the mothers still harbored self-accusations after a year. The highfliers were mothers who succeeded in breastfeeding because of their own persistence. They described breastfeeding as enjoyable for both the mother and the infant. The pragmatist mothers breastfed because it was the general norm and a practical way to feed the infant; breastfeeding caused neither passion nor discomfort. The group of bottle-feeding-oriented mothers expressed that breastfeeding did not interest them at any point. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Being aware of the typology could help nurses and midwives carefully observe mothers' individual counselling needs. Mothers' wishes and decisions regarding breastfeeding need to be respected and supported without any judgment. IMPLICATIONS FOR RESEARCH The possibilities to tailor breastfeeding interventions based on the typology should be investigated.

Abstract
Children with prenatal substance exposure are at increased risk for externalizing behavior problems and violence. However, the contribution of early life experiences for placing these individuals at risk is not well understood. Utilizing a sample of 1,388 children with prenatal substance exposure from the Maternal Lifestyle Study, we attempt to shed light on these contributing factors by examining the impact of infant temperament, maternal sensitivity, and early life stress on the expression of violent behavior at ages 12 through 14 years. Males may be more at risk for increases in violent behavior in early adolescence through a number of early life experiences, such as variability in responses to maternal flexibility and engagement related to individual differences in temperament, as well as exposure to early adversity. Comparing two prevailing developmental theoretical frameworks, deficit models and differential susceptibility, we aim to understand the developmental origins of violent behavior in males by identifying children who may be most susceptible to early caregiving experiences.

Abstract
SUMMARY – Breast milk makes the world healthier and better. Deaths and suffering of thousands of children and mothers each year could be prevented through universal breastfeeding, along with enormous economic savings. The aim of this study was to examine the knowledge of breastfeeding and intention to breastfeed in third-year secondary school students from various high schools and to make a conclusion on the unique and structured education program on breastfeeding in secondary schools. A total of 252 third-year secondary school students from 4 high schools in Bjelovar, Kutina and Pakrac completed an online questionnaire on the knowledge and intention to breastfeed. The results were presented by descriptive statistics methods. Kruskal-Wallis test was conducted for intention scale and χ2-test for questions about knowledge. Logistic regression was used to predict probabilities of a response. The results showed the responses of students from individual schools to be statistically significantly different in some questions of knowledge and some items of intention of breastfeeding. Insufficient breastfeeding information in schools does not provide a basis to third-year secondary school students to make an informed decision about breastfeeding in adulthood. We propose development and use of a unique structured educational program on breastfeeding for secondary school students.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breastfeeding offers several advantages for infants with research suggesting that it benefits development, including cognitive and language development. However, limited research has examined the benefits in infants under one year. AIMS To investigate the association between breastfeeding duration and infant development. STUDY DESIGN A longitudinal study conducted over 12 months. SUBJECTS Two hundred fifty-five mothers and their infants living in South Korea were seen at three time-points based on infants' age (4, 6, and 12 months). OUTCOME MEASURES Breastfeeding data were collected at 4 and 6 months. The Korea-Developmental Screening Test for Infants & Children was administered at 6 and 12 months to measure developmental milestones. We analyzed the relationship between breastfeeding duration in the first 6 months and infant development at 6 and 12 months using logistic regression analysis. RESULTS Compared to infants who did not breastfeed at all, infants who were exclusively breastfed until 4 months of age followed by mixed breastfeeding had a better communication and social interaction at 6 months, and better cognition, communication, and social interaction at 12 months. Exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months of age had no apparent impact on the outcomes at 6 and 12 months. CONCLUSIONS Exclusive breastfeeding up to 4 months of age followed by mixed breastfeeding might maximize the effects of infant development in their first year after birth. Breastfeeding programs should effectively communicate that exclusive breastfeeding for at least 4 months benefits infant development.
