Prevalence of and associated factors for psychological distress among single fathers in Japan

Predicting Depressive Symptoms and Psychological Distress by Circulating Inflammatory Mediators: A 16-Month Prospective Study in Japanese White-Collar Employees

OBJECTIVE

Although increasing evidence suggests that depression/distress involves inflammatory processes, its potential sex differences and the temporal directions for this association remain elusive.

METHODS

We examined the temporal association between serum inflammatory mediators and depression/distress as measured by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K6), in nondepressed working men and women (n = 61 and 43, respectively) by a 16-month prospective design.

RESULTS

Fully adjusted partial correlation analyses revealed that, in men, a lower IFN-γ predicted subsequent increases in CES-D and K6 scores, whereas a higher TNF-α predicted increased K6 scores. In women, a higher IFN-γ predicted a subsequent increase in the CES-D score. CES-D and K6 scores did not predict inflammatory mediators at follow-up.

CONCLUSIONS

The finding suggests that inflammatory activation precedes depression/distress with distinct sex differences.

Recent dental visits and family caregiving among individuals with dental symptoms: A nationwide cross-sectional study in Japan

OBJECTIVES

With the increasing number of family caregivers due to the ageing population, physical and mental health problems among caregivers are of concern. However, few studies have evaluated their oral health. This study aimed to evaluate the association between being a family caregiver and recent dental visits for dental symptoms in Japan, with consideration of gender.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted using the 2016 Comprehensive Survey of Living Conditions (CSLC) in Japan. Participants with dental symptoms were included in this study. The primary outcome was recent dental visits. The exposure variable of interest was being a primary caregiver for a family member requiring long-term care. A logistic regression analysis was conducted adjusting for contributing factors such as age, gender, marital status, working hours per week, education, household expenditure per month, self-rated health and the interaction between gender and caregiving. A stratified analysis by gender was also performed.

RESULTS

Of the 5100 eligible participants, 233 (4.6%) were family caregivers. Of all participants, 2746 (53.8%) reported dental visits. The adjusted odds ratio (aOR) of family caregivers having recent dental visits was 0.83 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.64-1.09). In a gender stratified analysis, family caregivers were less likely to visit dental clinics than were non-family caregivers in the male subsample (aOR: 0.56, 95% CI: 0.34-0.92) but not in the female subsample (aOR: 0.99, 95% CI: 0.72-1.38).

CONCLUSIONS

The findings indicate that family caregivers, especially male caregivers, had fewer dental visits than non-family caregivers. These findings suggest the need to improve the accessibility of dental clinics to family caregivers with dental symptoms.

Single parenthood and depression: A thorough review of current understanding

BACKGROUND

Single parenthood is becoming increasingly common in today's society for various reasons such as divorce, the death of a spouse, or the choice of parenthood. Regrettably, there seems to be no significant concern among world leaders regarding depression arising from single parenting.

AIM

This article aimed to explore the prevalence of depression in single parents, the factors contributing to it, and its effects on their physical and emotional well-being. Additionally, it aims to investigate the long-lasting effects of depression in single parents, effective therapeutic approaches to tackle these issues and offer proactive suggestions for relevant global stakeholders.

METHODOLOGY

A selection of studies was identified through electronic databases such as PubMed, Embase, and PsycINFO databases. The search strategy encompassed terms related to single parenthood, depression, mental health, prevalence, risk factors, and treatment modalities. Included studies comprised of peer-reviewed research articles, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and observational studies published in English.

RESULT

Today, there is a growing prevalence of single parenthood due to a range of factors, including divorce, the loss of a partner, and intentional decisions regarding single parenthood. However, this transition comes with challenges, including the risk of developing depression. Depression is a serious mental health condition affecting many individuals worldwide. Raising a child alone increases the likelihood of developing depression for the parent due to the increased burden and responsibilities. Such parents tend to have low self-esteem, suicide/suicide attempts, and so forth and children born by those parents are vulnerable to depression, physical abuse, infections, etc.

CONCLUSION

Future research should focus on identifying effective interventions for treating depression among single parents and improving the availability of mental health facilities for this vulnerable population, especially in places with a high prevalence of depression. Mental health physicians in collaboration with obstetricians and gynecologists across the globe should offer counseling and mediation services during pre-conception care visits for both single and partnered parents.

Prevalence and Associated Factors of Psychological Distress Among Diabetic Patients at Thyolo District Hospital in Malawi: A Hospital-Based Cross-Sectional Study

Background

Emotional distress experienced by individuals with diabetes represents a type of psychological strain specific to the challenges posed by diabetes. It mirrors the emotional reactions arising from coping with the demands of the illness and the essential care associated with diabetes. The study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of psychological distress among diabetic patients at Thyolo District Hospital in Malawi.

Objective

To determine the prevalence and associated factors of psychological distress among diabetic patients at Thyolo District Hospital in Malawi.

Methods

The cross-sectional study involved 171 participants chosen using a simple random sampling technique at Thyolo District Hospital. The study was conducted from June 28 to July 27, 2023. The data were inputted into SPSS version 23.0, and descriptive statistics were employed for analysis. Cross-tabulation, utilizing Pearson chi-square, and correlation analysis were performed. The statistical significance level was established at P <0.05.

Results

Out of the 171 participants included in the study, 44 (25.7%) reported experiencing diabetic distress. According to levels of psychological distress, the study reports that 27 (15.8%) had mild depression, while 5 (2.9%) presented with moderate depression and 1 (0.6%) had extremely severe depression. As regards to levels of anxiety, 14 (8.2%) had mild anxiety, while 5 (2.9%) had moderate anxiety. In terms of stress levels, only one participant (0.6%) reported mild stress, and an equal proportion reported moderate stress. Additionally, age was identified as a significant factor associated with psychological distress, with a p-value of 0.001.

Conclusion

Approximately 33% of the diabetic patients involved in this study revealed psychological distress, and this condition showed a statistically significant association with age. Conducting routine assessments and implementing early control measures for the associated factors are crucial in mitigating both the prevalence and the impact of psychological distress among diabetic patients.

Trajectories of fathers' childcare involvement and child behavioral outcomes

BACKGROUND

Father's closeness and playful behavior influence a child's emotional and cognitive development. In this study, we aimed to assess the long-term association of paternal involvement in childcare at 1-3 years of life on subsequent behavioral outcomes at 8 years of age.

METHODS

Data were obtained from the 2010 cohort of the Longitudinal Survey of Newborns in the 21st century in Japan. We used group-based trajectory modeling to predict the trajectory of total childcare scores in surveys 1, 2 and 3 to determine the overall involvement of fathers in childcare during early childhood. The level of fathers' involvement in childcare was categorized as "low", "medium" and "high". Responses from the eighth survey were used to assess child behavioral outcomes using five indicators when the child was 8 years old. Crude and adjusted logistic regression analysis was conducted to estimate the odds ratio (OR) separately for each of the behavioral outcomes of the child.

RESULTS

Among the 17,027 father-child dyads included in this study, two-thirds of the fathers were of the age group 30-39 years. Compared to low involvement, children of fathers with high involvement in childcare during the early childhood years were less likely to not want to go to school even after adjusting for covariates (adjusted OR, 0.46; 95% CI: 0.32-0.66).

CONCLUSIONS

Children benefit from their fathers' involvement in early childcare activities. To improve a child's well-being, fathers should be encouraged by providing them with a suitable working environment with flexible arrangements and the opportunity to involve in childcare.
