Abstract
Chickens are one of the most economically important poultry species, and their egg-laying performance is a crucial economic trait. The intestinal microbiome plays a significant role in the egg-laying performance. To clarify the diversity of chicken intestinal microbiota and its connection to egg-laying performance, this study utilized 16S rRNA sequencing technology to characterize the intestinal microbiomes of 101 chickens from 13 breeds with varying levels of egg production. The results reveal significant differences in gut microbiota structure among chicken groups with varying egg production levels. High egg-producing chickens showed significantly higher abundances of Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Lactobacillus, while low egg-producing chickens displayed greater microbial α-diversity and more complex community structures. These differences in gut microbiota influence key physiological functions, including nutrient absorption and hormone regulation through metabolic pathways, and directly affect egg production performance. The low and medium production groups partially overlapped on the principal coordinates analysis plot, whereas the high-production group was distinctly separate. This study provides a scientific basis and intestinal microbiome data for selecting probiotics related to high egg production in chickens. IMPORTANCE This study elucidates the critical role of gut microbiota in the egg-laying performance of chickens, a key economic indicator in the poultry industry. By employing 16S rRNA sequencing, we uncovered distinct microbial profiles associated with varying levels of egg production. High egg-producing chickens exhibit a higher abundance of specific bacterial taxa, such as Firmicutes and Proteobacteria, which are linked to enhanced nutrient absorption and metabolic efficiency. Conversely, lower and medium egg-producing chickens display greater microbial diversity, suggesting a more complex but less efficient gut ecosystem. Our findings provide valuable insights into the relationship between gut microbiota and egg production, offering a scientific foundation for the selection of probiotics that could potentially improve the egg-laying performance of chickens. This research not only advances our understanding of avian gut microbiology but also has practical implications for optimizing poultry farming practices and enhancing economic outcomes.

Abstract
Background and Aim The inclusion of supplementary enzymes, such as phytase and xylanase, in poultry diets enhances nutrient digestibility and reduces excreta output, minimizing environmental impact. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of phytase and xylanase supplementation on laying performance, egg quality, apparent metabolizable energy (AME), and phosphorus utilization in laying hens. Materials and Methods A total of 576 laying hens, aged 47 weeks, were randomly assigned to four dietary treatments: (T1) a control diet, (T2) a negative control diet with reduced energy and phosphorus, (T3) T2 supplemented with phytase (50 g/ton) and xylanase (100 g/ton), and (T4) T2 supplemented with phytase and NSP enzyme mix. The study was conducted over 12 weeks. Data on body weight, laying performance, egg quality, AME, and phosphorus utilization were analyzed using a one-way analysis of variance, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Results No significant differences were observed in hen-day egg production, egg weight, or feed intake across groups. However, enzyme supplementation (T3 and T4) significantly reduced feed costs per kg egg and feed cost per egg compared to the control (p < 0.05). Eggshell strength improved significantly in T3 and T4 groups, while yolk color declined in these groups compared to T1 (p < 0.05). Other quality metrics, such as albumin height and Haugh units, showed no significant differences. Apparent metabolizable energy, phosphorus retention time, and feces scores were not significantly affected by dietary treatments. Conclusion Phytase and xylanase supplementation in diets with reduced nutrient content effectively reduced production costs while maintaining laying performance and improving eggshell strength. These findings support the use of these enzymes as cost-efficient tools in poultry production without compromising egg quality.

Abstract
Animal industry seeks cost-effective solutions to enhance performance and health of domestic animals. This study investigated the effects of supplementing Bacillus spp. probiotics and xylanase on 2000 one-day-old Japanese quails, randomly assigned to four treatment groups (10 replicates). The control group received no supplementation, while the others were supplemented with a Bacillus-based probiotic at 7.5 × 107 cfu/kg of feed, xylanase enzyme (2,000 U/kg) alone or in combination. Quails receiving both probiotic and enzyme exhibited significantly (p < 0.01) higher weekly and overall weight gain, and lower feed conversion ratios compared to the control group. Dressing percentage was higher (p < 0.01), and mortality lower in birds supplemented with a combination of enzyme and probiotic. Antibody titres against infectious bronchitis and infectious bursal disease were significantly (p < 0.01) higher in quails receiving combined probiotic and enzyme supplementation, while titres against Newcastle disease virus were higher (p < 0.01) in groups supplemented with probiotic and enzyme individually or in combination. Additionally, digestibility was significantly (p < 0.01) higher in groups receiving combined enzyme and probiotic supplementation, with higher apparent metabolizable energy compared to the control. The populations of beneficial Lactobacillus increased, while harmful E. coli and Salmonella decreased significantly in quails supplemented with both probiotic and enzyme. In conclusion, supplementing xylanase enzyme and probiotic together in Japanese quails positively influenced growth, nutrient digestibility, immune response, and cecal microbiota.

Abstract
This study examined the impacts of four wheat cultivars and enzyme supplementation on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and ileal microbiota composition in broiler chickens. Six hundred forty-eight male broilers (1-day-old, Ross 308) were studied in a completely randomized design factorial 4 × 2 along with control (9 treatments) with 6 replications (12 birds per pen). The Diets consisted of the four varieties of wheat (Sardari, Azar2, Sirvan, and Pishgam) with and without enzyme supplementation, alongside a corn-based control diet. All diets were iso-caloric and iso-nitrogenous. Daily weight gain (DWG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were not significantly affected by the dietary treatments. Broilers fed the corn-based diet displayed higher feed intake (FI) than those fed diets containing different wheat cultivars. Enzyme supplementation in wheat-based diets did not impact broiler growth performance. There was an interaction between enzyme and wheat type for protein, fat, calcium, and phosphorus digestibility. Ileal microbiota analysis revealed no significant changes in Lactobacillus and Escherichia coli populations across treatments. Conversely, Enterococcus and Bifidobacteria populations exhibited significant differences, with the Sirvan cultivar diet promoting the highest bacterial counts. It was concluded that different wheat cultivars could affect growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and ileum microbiota, and the beneficial effect of supplemental enzymes was only evident in certain variables and depended on the specific wheat variety.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of xylanase and flaxseed the performance of chickens, digesta viscosity, nutrient retention, fatty acid profile in muscle, tibia strength and interrelations of these factors in broiler chickens fed a wheat-based diet. Seven hundred and twenty one-day-old Ross 308 cockerels were assigned to four treatments according to the contents of flaxseed (0 and 80 g/kg) and xylanase (0 and 0.1 g/kg) in the diet. Xylanase significantly decreased the intake of feed (p < 0.001), decreased feed conversion (p < 0.001), and reduced mortality (p = 0.050). In addition, xylanase significantly increased the retention of all nutrients (p = 0.010 -<0.001) except crude fibre, the fat content in breast meat (p = 0.029) and liver (p = 0.019) and the concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in meat (p = 0.002). Flaxseed supplementation did not influence performance but decreased the retention of dry matter (p = 0.016), crude protein (p = 0.012), organic matter (p = 0.016) and nitrogen-free extract (p = 0.008). Xylanase in combination with flaxseed increased the content of n-3 fatty acids in the breast meat (p = 0.006). The lowest n-6/n-3 ratio (p = 0.001) was detected in the flaxseed and flaxseed combined with xylanase groups. Significant interaction effects of flaxseed and xylanase on tibia strength (p = 0.030) and tibia ash content (p = 0.009) were detected. The administration of xylanase or flaxseed alone increased tibia strength. Compared with the control diet, the addition of flaxseed to the diet increased the digesta viscosity (p = 0.043) in the ileum, whereas the addition of xylanase decreased the level of this indicator. It can be concluded that xylanase is an enzyme suitable for increasing nutrient availability, and in the case of its addition to a flaxseed diet, it can reduce the antinutritional effect of flaxseed by reducing the viscosity of the digesta and increasing the content of health-promoting n-3 PUFAs.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the effects of NH3 variations across different positions within a cage-reared duck house on the egg production performance and fecal microbiome in Muscovy ducks. Totals of 3,168 female Muscovy ducks (180 ± 2 d) were randomly assigned to 1,056 cages. From d 293 to 300, the egg production rate and levels of NH3, H2S, CO2, temperature, humidity, light intensity, and dust particles were recorded. Two spatial distribution-based experimental classification methods were applied, one grouping ducks into Front, Middle, and End categories, and the other into First, Second, and Third layers. On d 300, serum and feces samples were collected for further analysis. The result showed that both the egg production rate and serum PROG level in the Front were higher than End (P < 0.05). However, no significant differences were found among the First, Second, and Third groups. Among the environmental factors, ammonia (NH3) is a major harmful gas in cage-reared duck houses, with observed concentrations showing a gradient from lower levels in the Front group to higher levels in the Middle group (P < 0.05), and even higher levels in the End group (P < 0.05). Gene sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene revealed a higher relative abundance of Firmicutes in both the Front and Middle groups compared to the End group (P < 0.05). Specifically, within the Firmicutes phylum, the relative abundance of Lactobacillus and Romboutsia was notably higher in the Front group compared to both the Middle and End groups (P < 0.05). What's more, the abundance of Lactobacillus had a negative correlation with NH3 concentration and positive correlation with egg production rate. In conclusion, NH3 concentrations showed variations across different areas of the cage-reared duck house, with higher levels detected at the rear. The elevated NH3 level was identified as the main factor negatively impacting egg production in Muscovy ducks and contributing to a decline in the abundance of Firmicutes, specifically Lactobacillus.

Abstract
CONTEXT The nutritional value of enzyme-supplemented wheat-contained diets can be influenced by interactions between wheat cultivar and exogenous enzyme, which in turn cause various effects on the performance of poultry. AIMS The effects of diets including various wheat cultivars with or without enzyme on productive performance and egg quality characteristics were evaluated. METHODS A total of 270 58-week-old Lohmann LSL-Lite were allocated to 9 experimental dietary groups with 5 replicate cages and 6 birds per each cage. Based on a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatment, nine iso-caloric and iso-nitrogenous experimental diets, including four wheat cultivars (Sardari, Azar 2, Pishgam and Sirvan) with and without enzymes plus a corn-based control diet, were tested in a completely randomized design during an 8-week trial period. KEY RESULTS From weeks 58 to 63 and 63 to 67 of age, the hens fed with Sardari-included diet showed the lowest feed intake compared to other groups (p < 0.05). Egg production (EP), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and egg mass (EM) were not influenced by the experimental diets. At the age of 62 weeks, the effect of adding enzyme on egg shape index was significant. Moreover, in sampling week 67, increased eggshell weight (%) was detected in enzyme-supplemented diets compared to diets with no enzyme (10.03 vs. 9.37, respectively). Besides, the shell thickness was the highest in the group fed with Azar 2, and the lowest in the group fed with Sirvan at the age of 67 weeks (p < 0.05). Albumen weights (%) were also significant in some cases. The highest albumen weight was observed in Sirvan-included diet without enzyme on week 62. Reduced yolk weight was detected in enzyme-supplemented Pishgam-included diet on 62 weeks of age (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The inclusion of the diets of laying hens with the four tested Iranian wheat cultivars has no negative impact on most productive performance and egg quality indices. Moreover, supplementing the wheat-included diets with non-starch polysaccharidase enzyme (beta-endopower) improved eggshell weight on week 67.

Abstract
Pomegranate contains bioactive compounds in all its parts. In this study, two levels of pomegranate peel byproduct (PPB) with or without the inclusion of xylanase enzyme were used to supplement laying hens' diet, in a 2 × 2 full factorial design. A total of 48 Isa brown laying hens were fed the following experimental diets for 8 weeks: T1 (2.5% PPB); T2 (2.5% PPB and xylanase); T3 (5% PPB); T4 (5% PPB and xylanase). Eggs collected were analyzed for egg quality parameters. Moreover, egg yolks were analyzed for Malondialdehyde content (MDA), fatty acid profile and total phenolic content. The T2 eggs showed enhanced yolk coloration and greater yolk total phenolic content. The T3 and T4 egg yolks showed lower MDA levels compared with T1, T2. Overall, results have shown that (a) xylanase inclusion affected egg yolk coloration and total phenolic content when combined with 2.5% PPB dietary supplementation; (b) dietary supplementation of 5% PPB resulted in eggs with reduced MDA levels.

Abstract
Duckweed is a rapidly growing aquatic plant, which could be used in the diet of laying hens to enhance carbon capture and improve land use efficiency. Digestion may be improved by supplementation with exogenous enzymes. We replaced soyabean meal and wheat with duckweed in a 10-week study with 432, 60-week-old Hy-Line W-36 layers, divided into six isocaloric and isonitrogenous dietary treatments, each with eight replicates. Two factors were investigated: first, duckweed substituted for wheat gluten meal and soyabean meal at 0, 7.5 and 15% of the diet, and second, with and without a multi-enzyme supplement (500 mg/kg). Duckweed did not affect egg output or weight, but it improved yolk color (P = 0.01) and reduced the liver enzymes aspartate aminotransferase (P = 0.04) and alanine aminotransferase (P = 0.02) in serum, suggesting hepatoprotective effects. Enzyme addition did not alter the effects of including duckweed in the diet, but it increased feed intake (P = 0.03). It is concluded that, as well as offering the potential to increase land productivity, inclusion of duckweed in the diet of laying hens enhances egg yolk color and hepatoprotection, without detrimental effects on performance.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate whether there are negative effects of the partial replacement of white corn with rye along with xylanase supplementation on overall bone quality, eggshell mineralization, and mechanical strength in laying hens. From the 26th week of life, ISA Brown laying hens were fed either a wheat-corn diet or a diet containing 25% rye, with or without xylanase. The experimental period lasted for 25 weeks, until birds reached their 50th week of age, after which bone and eggshell quality indices were assessed. Eggshell thickness and eggshell Ca content of eggs from rye-fed hens were improved by xylanase supplementation. No differences in the mechanical properties of the eggshells were observed between treatments, except for the diet-dependent changes in egg deformation. Rye inclusion had no effect on the mechanical properties of bone. Xylanase supplementation, irrespective of the diet, had a positive effect on bone strength and increased tibia Ca content, as well as the content of several microelements. Hence, hybrid rye combined with wheat can replace 25% of corn in layer diets without compromising shell quality or bone mineral content. Xylanase supplementation in these diets is recommended since its inclusion improves both bone strength and quality.

Abstract
This study evaluated the impact of feeding xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS), fermentable fiber in the form of wheat bran (WB), and xylanase (XYL) on laying hen productive performance and nutrient digestibility. The hypothesis was that the WB would provide the microbiota in the hindgut with fermentable dietary xylan, and the XOS and XYL would further upregulate xylan fermentation pathways, resulting in improved nutrient utilization. Isa Brown hens (n = 96) were obtained at 39 wk of age. They were fed 12 dietary treatments, 8 hens per treatment, for 56 d. A commercial laying hen ration was fed, and for half of the treatments 10% of this ration was directly replaced with WB. The diets were then supplemented with either 1) no supplements; 2) XOS 50 g/t; 3) XOS 2000 g/t; 4) XYL (16,000 BXU/kg); 5) XYL + XOS 50 g/t, or 6) XYL + XOS 2,000 g/t. Hen performance and egg quality were measured every 14 d. On d56, ileum digesta samples were collected for determination of starch, nonstarch polysaccharide (NSP), XOS, protein, energy, and starch digestibility. Ceca digesta samples were also collected for analysis of XOS, short chain fatty acid (SCFA), xylanase and cellulase activity and microbial counts. Feeding 2,000 g/t XOS increased ileal protein digestibility. Combined 2,000 g/t XOS and XYL increased cecal Bifidobacteria concentration. This combination also increased cecal xylanase activity in birds fed the control diet. Cecal cellulase activity was improved by feeding WB, XYL, and 2,000 g/t XOS. XYL increased cecal lactate production. Feeding 2,000 g/t XOS with WB increased insoluble NSP degradability and shell breaking strength at d56. In summary, supplementing laying hen diets with fermentable fiber, XYL and XOS increases utilization of dietary xylan, improving nutrient utilization, performance, and gastrointestinal health.

Abstract
Albumen quality is recognized as one of the major yardsticks in measuring egg quality. The elasticity of thick albumen, a strong bond in the ovomucin-lysozyme complex, and excellent biological properties are indicators of high-quality albumen. The albumen quality prior to egg storage contribute to enhance egg’s shelf life and economic value. Evidence suggests that albumen quality can deteriorate due to changes in albumen structure, such as the degradation of β-ovomucin subunit and O-glyosidic bonds, the collapse of the ovomucin-lysozyme complex, and a decrease in albumen protein-protein interaction. Using organic minerals, natural plants and animal products with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, high biological value, no residue effect and toxicity risk could improve albumen quality. These natural products (e.g., tea polyphenols, marigold extract, magnolol, essential oils, Upro (small peptide), yeast cell wall, Bacillus species, a purified amino acid from animal blood, and pumpkin seed meal) are bio-fortified into eggs, thus enhancing the biological and technological function of the albumen. Multiple strategies to meeting laying hens’ metabolic requirements and improvement in albumen quality are described in this review, including the use of amino acids, vitamins, minerals, essential oils, prebiotics, probiotics, organic trace elements, and phytogenic as feed additives. From this analysis, natural products can improve animal health and consequently albumen quality. Future research should focus on effects of these natural products in extending shelf life of the albumen during storage and at different storage conditions. Research in that direction may provide insight into albumen quality and its biological value in fresh and stored eggs.

Abstract
The intestinal microbiota has attracted tremendous attention in the field of the poultry industry due to its critical role in the modulation of nutrient utilization, immune system, and consequently the improvement of the host health and production performance. Accumulating evidence implies intestinal microbiota of laying hens is a potential mediator to improve the prevalent issues in terms of egg quality decline in the late phase of laying production. However, the regulatory effect of intestinal microbiota on egg quality in laying hens remains elusive, which requires consideration of microbial baseline composition and succession during their long lifespans. Notable, although Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria form the vast majority of intestinal microbiota in layer hens, dynamic intestinal microbiota succession occurs throughout all laying periods. In addition to the direct effects on egg safety, intestinal microbiota and its metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids, bile acids, and tryptophan derivatives, are suggested to indirectly modulate egg quality through the microbiota-gut-liver/brain-reproductive tract axis. These findings can extend our understanding of the crosstalk between intestinal microbiota and the host to improve egg quality and safety. This paper reviews the compositions of intestinal microbiota in different physiological stages of laying hens and their effects on egg quality and proposes that intestinal microbiota may become a potential target for modulating egg quality and safety by nutritional strategies in the future.

Abstract
Sustainable development in agriculture brings both environmental and economic benefits. Contemporary agriculture is also about increasing nutrient use efficiency, especially nitrogen, as the critical nutrient causing the most significant environmental pressure. This creates the need to produce highly digestible protein feed with high bioavailability, reducing losses of biogenic elements to feces. In this review, the latest trends and the potential for their implementation in sustainable agriculture have been compared, as well as the need to reduce the negative environmental impact of agriculture has been demonstrated. Applying local protein sources to feed animals reduces greenhouse gas emissions associated with transportation. The production of highly digestible fodder leads to a reduction in environmental pollution caused by excessive nitrogen outflows. Another approach indecreasing ammonia emissions from livestock farming is feed protein reduction and amino acid supplementation. All of the aforementioned approaches may result in beneficial long-term changes, contributing to environmental safety, animal welfare and human health.

Abstract
Simple Summary Spanish production of compound feed is among the most important in the Member States of the European Union for all livestock species. However, due to the environmental impact of this large-scale production system, it is important to focus on sustainability, promoting initiatives such as the use of by-products from the food industry applied to animal feed. In this study, laying hens received two types of dietary supplement: biscuit meal, which is a co-product of the human food industry commonly used in the manufacture of compound feed, obtained from the recycling of wasted or expired food products; and fermented defatted “alperujo”, a by-product of modified olive oil, which contain numerous substances with beneficial properties for intestinal health. Hens co-administered with these supplements showed increased intestinal villi development, resulting in improved health. In conclusion, these by-products can contribute to the prevention of intestinal diseases, as well as to the reduction of environmental pollution. Abstract In this study, the effects of co-administration with biscuit flour and fermented defatted “alperujo” (FDA) on gut health were evaluated in a batch of laying hens (Hy-Line 2015) on a commercial farm. Animals were divided into two groups: control group and treatment group; and histological and morphometric analyses of all sections of the intestine (duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum and rectum) were performed at 10, 18, 25, 50 and 75 weeks of age. During the whole productive period, a decrease in the mortality rate (p = 0.01) was observed in treated hens, as well as an increase in the number of eggs produced (p < 0.001), their size (p < 0.025), and weight (p < 0.024). In the early and late stages of production (10, 18 and 50 weeks), a significant increase (p < 0.001) in the height and depth of the intestinal villi was observed in the treatment group. Villi height was also significantly higher (p < 0.001) in the treatment group up to week 50 in the cecum, and at weeks 18 and 50 in the rectum. We concluded that an economical and sustainable feeding system with less environmental impact, such as co-supplementation with biscuit flour and FDA, could maintain gut health without negatively impacting laying hens’ productive performance.

A total of 144 Hy-line Brown laying hens (25 wk of age) were randomly allocated to 1 of 4 wheat-based dietary treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial experimental design, with 36 replicates of individual hens per treatment. The diets were formulated to contain either a high or low sNSP level (at 13.3 or 10.8 g/kg) and were supplemented with either 0 or 12,000 BXU/kg exogenous xylanase. Birds were fed these treatment diets for an 8-wk period, and hen production performance, including daily egg production, average egg weight, daily egg mass, feed conversion ratio and proportion of dirty and abnormal eggs were measured at bird age 25 to 28 wk and 29 to 32 wk. An interaction between sNSP content of the diet and xylanase supplementation was observed on daily egg production from 25 to 28 wk of age (P = 0.018); birds fed the high sNSP diet without xylanase had lower egg production than those fed any other treatment. An interaction between the 2 dietary factors was also observed on hen weight gain at 29 to 32 wk of age (P = 0.014), with birds fed the low sNSP diet with 12,000 BXU/kg xylanase presenting greater weight gain compared to those fed the high sNSP diet with 12,000 BXU/kg xylanase. Feed intake at 29 to 32 wk of age was reduced by xylanase supplementation (P = 0.047). Xylanase supplementation also increased yolk colour score at both 28 and 32 wk of age, and decreased yolk weight at 32 wk of age (P = 0.014, 0.037 and 0.013, respectively). Birds fed the low sNSP diet presented lower protein digestibility (P = 0.024) than those fed the high sNSP diet. Additionally, birds fed high sNSP presented higher shell reflectivity at both 28 and 32 wk of age (P = 0.05 and 0.036, respectively). The influence of duration of feeding the treatment diets on egg quality was also determined. It was observed that egg weight, yolk weight and yolk colour score consistently increased over time, regardless of experimental treatment effects. In contrast, Haugh Unit and albumen height significantly decreased throughout the study period in all treatments, although this was less pronounced in hens fed the treatment with high sNSP and no supplemental xylanase. A reduction in shell breaking strength over time was observed only in hens fed the treatments without xylanase addition, and shell thickness was improved over time only in birds fed the low sNSP diet with xylanase. The impacts of the dietary treatments were largely inconsistent in this study, so a solid conclusion cannot be drawn. However, these findings do indicate that dietary NSP level influences layer production performance, and thus should be considered when formulating laying hen diets. It also proved that further research is warranted into how to optimize the benefits of xylanase application in laying hens.

Abstract
A study was undertaken to determine the effects of supplemental multicarbohydrase (MC) and butyrate glycerides (BG) on productive performance, nutritional, and physiological responses in laying hens fed corn- or wheat-based diets during a 12-week production period (from 50–62 wk of age). The experiment consisted of a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of the treatments with 2 different basal diets (corn- or wheat-based diets), 2 concentrations of MC (0 or 200 mg/kg of diet), and 2 concentrations of BG (0 or 2 g/kg of diet). Each treatment had 6 replicates with 8 hens each. The interactions among diet, MC, and BG were observed for egg production (P = 0.048), feed conversion ratio (P = 0.005), and ileal Escherichia coli count (P = 0.043), indicating that the effects of MC and BG on these responses were more marked when wheat-based diet was fed. A diet × MC interaction (P < 0.05) was also detected for egg mass, eggshell breaking strength, jejunal viscosity, and digestibility coefficients of fat and ash. Replacing 100% of the corn with wheat in the diets of laying hens negatively affected (P < 0.05) yolk color index, eggshell thickness, digesta viscosity, jejunal morphology, and populations of ileal microbiota. By contrast, MC supplementation increased (P < 0.05) eggshell thickness, digestibility coefficients of energy and crude protein, and populations of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium spp. in the ileum. Inclusion of BG also resulted in greater (P < 0.05) jejunal villus height and villus surface area, and digestibility coefficients of protein and ash, but lower (P < 0.05) populations of total bacteria, Salmonella and E. coli in the ileum. Results indicate that while the complete substitution of corn by wheat has a detrimental effect on productive performance and gut health, the combination of MC and BG may have synergistic effects on improving productive performance and intestinal microbiota in laying hens fed the wheat-based diets during the late laying period.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was conducted to investigate the synergistic effect of exogenous multienzyme and phytase on growth performance, nutrients digestibility, blood metabolites, intestinal microflora, and morphology in broilers fed corn-wheat-soybean meal diets. METHODS A 2×2 factorial design was used in this study. Four dietary treatments consisted of i) basal diets (corn-wheat-soybean meal based diets without multi-enzyme and phytase), ii) basal diets with phytase (0.05%), iii) basal diets with exogenous multi-enzyme (0.05%), and iv) basal diets with exogenous multi-enzyme including phytase (0.05%). A total of 480 broiler chickens (Ross 308 - one day old) were weighed and allotted to thirty-two cages (15 birds per cage), and chicks were randomly allocated to four dietary treatments. RESULTS The body weight gain and feed conversion rate were improved by supplementation of exogenous multi-enzyme containing phytase during the finisher period (p<0.05). The birds fed diets with exogenous multi-enzyme containing phytase had a significantly greater digestibility of dry matter, gross energy, crude protein, calcium, and phosphorus compared with birds fed non-supplemented diets (p<0.05). The chickens fed diets with exogenous multi-enzyme containing phytase showed a higher concentration of Ca and P in the serum (p<0.05). The population of Lactobacillus spp., Escherichia coli, and Clostridium were not affected in the ileum and cecum of chickens fed enzyme-supplemented diets. The dietary supplemental exogenous multi-enzyme containing phytase showed a significant improvement in villus height, crypt depth, and villus height and crypt depth ratio, compared to basal diets or dietary supplemental phytase (p<0.05). CONCLUSION The supplementation of the exogenous multi-enzyme containing phytase synergistically improved the growth performance, nutrients digestibility, and villus height of the small intestine of broiler chickens fed a corn-wheat-soybean meal based diets.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of non-starch polysaccharide multi-enzyme (NME) in early laying phase of hens on production performance, egg quality, nutrient digestibility, and excreta noxious gas emission. In total, 432 Hy-line brown laying hens at 18 wk of age were used in a 10-wk feeding trail. Hens were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments with 24 replication and 6 hens per replication (1 hen per cage). Dietary treatments were corn-soybean meal-DDGS-based diets supplemented with 0 (based diet, CON), 0.05% (NME1), and 0.1% (NME2) of NME. No significant (P > 0.05) response to increasing NME supplementation was observed for damaged egg rate shown throughout the experiment. Significant (P < 0.05) linear increase was observed for egg production at week 4, 6, and 8; moreover, egg production at week 8 also showed quadratic (P = 0.0344) increase. No significant effects were found on yolk color, eggshell strength, and eggshell thickness during the experiment (P > 0.05) with the increase in NME supplemental levels. Albumin height, haugh unit, and egg color values were linearly (P < 0.05) increased at week 2 and 6 following the increasing NME supplementation, respectively. Additionally, quadratic (P = 0.0013) effect was observed on egg weight at week 6 with the increasing level of NME. Moreover, apparent total tract digestibility of nitrogen and excreta ammonia emission was linearly (P < 0.05) affected increasing NME supplementation. In summary, inclusion of NME containing xylanase, β-glucanase, galactosidase, and galactomannanase activities in corn-soybean meal-DDGS-based diets increased nitrogen digestibility, decreased excreta ammonia emission, and had no negative effects on production performance and egg quality parameters.

Abstract
The high concentration of melatonin (MEL) in the intestinal mucosa suggests that it has a special physiological function in intestine. In hens, previous studies have shown that MEL treatment promoted egg-laying performance. Considering the importance of amino acids (AA) for egg formation, we hypothesized that MEL may enhance the intestinal absorption of AA from the feed, thus promoting egg laying performance. In this study, we supplemented the hens with MEL for two consecutive weeks. The results showed that, compared with control group, feeding with 0.625 mg MEL/kg diets gave rise to higher egg laying rate (by 4.3%, P = 0.016), increased eggshell thickness (by 16.9%, P < 0.01) and albumen height (by 4.5%, P = 0.042). Meanwhile, feeding with 0.625 and 2.5 mg MEL/kg diets could significantly increase serum levels of aspartic acid, threonine, serine, glutamic acid, glycine, alanine, isoleucine, leucine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, lysine, histidine, arginine, and proline. Furthermore, a 0.625 mg MEL/kg diets could significantly increase the expression of PepT1 (by 3949.9%), B0AT (by 6045.9%), b0, +AT (by 603.5%), and EAAT3 (by 412.7%) in the jejunum. Additionally, in the cultured intestinal crypt "organoids," treatment with 0.5 μM MEL could significantly enhance the expression of PepT1, b0, +AT and EAAT3 mRNAs by 35.4%, 110.0%, and 160.1%, respectively. Detection of MEL concentration in serum and intestinal fluid suggested that lower dosage of MEL feeding was mainly acted on intestine locally, and further increased intestinal antioxidases (GPx-3, SOD-1 or PRDX-3) mRNA expression. Taken together, we demonstrated that MEL feeding in laying hens could locally promote the expression and function of AA transporter in small intestine by up-regulating antioxidases expression, and finally elevate laying performance.
