Lignocellulosic biomass fertilizers: Production, characterization, and agri-applications

The growing focus on sustainable agriculture and optimal resource utilization has spurred investigations into lignocellulosic biomass as a potential source for producing environmentally friendly fertilizers. This paper reviews recent advancements in the production and application of innovative fertilizers derived from lignocellulose. It highlights potential in enhancing agricultural productivity and reducing environmental impacts such as carbon footprint and water pollution. The paper outlines various methods for conversion, highlighting the unique advantages of chemical, enzymatic, and microbiological processes, for converting lignocellulosic biomass into nutrient-rich fertilizers. The study compares the efficacy of lignocellulosic fertilizers to traditional fertilizers in promoting crop growth, enhancing soil health, and reducing nutrient losses. The results demonstrate the potential of lignocellulosic biomass-derived fertilizers in promoting resource efficiency and sustainable agriculture. While this research significantly contributes to the existing body of knowledge, further studies on long-term impacts and scalability are recommended for the development of innovative and sustainable agricultural practices.

Investigating the characteristics of biomass wastes via particle feeder in downdraft gasifier

Particle feeding plays a crucial role in the gasifier due to its effects on the efficiency and performance metrics of the thermochemical process. Investigating particle size distribution's impact on downdraft gasification reactor performance, this study delves into the significance of feedstock characteristics (moisture, volatile matter, fixed carbon, and ash contents) during the particle feeding stage. Various biomass wastes (date palm waste, olive pomace and sewage sludge) at diverse compositions and sizes are subjected to empirical determination of mass flow rates (MFR), power ratings, and storage times for each feedstock. The preheating process in the gasifier is considered, employing both an approximation and analytical solution. In addition, the influence of the equivalence ratio (ER) on the syngas yield is analyzed. The collected data reveals that for average particle size of 200 μm, the highest MFR (in g/min) are 0.518 ± 0.033, 7.691 ± 0.415, and 16.111 ± 1.050, for palm wood biomass, olive pomace and sewage sludge, respectively. Smaller particles (80 μm) led to extended storage times. Moreover, the lumped capacitance approximation method consistently underestimates preheating time, with a percentage error of 6.26%-17.08%. Response surface methodology (RSM) optimization analysis provides optimal gasification conditions for palm wood biomass, olive pomace, and sewage sludge with maximum cold gas efficiencies (CGEs) of 58.01%, 63.29%, and 52.27%. The peak conversion was attained at gasification temperatures of 1089.83 °C, 1151.93 °C, and 1102.91 °C for palm wood biomass, olive pomace, and sewage sludge, respectively. In addition, gasification equilibrium model determined optimal gasification temperatures as 1150 °C for palm biomass, 1200 °C for olive pomace, and 1150 °C for sewage sludge with respective syngas efficiencies of 59.62%, 64.13%, and 53.66%. Consequently, the examination of the dosing procedure, preheating dynamics, particle dimensions, ER, storage time, and their combined impacts offer practical insights to effectively control downdraft gasifiers in handling a variety of feedstocks.

Can lateral tenodesis improve the rotational stability of the ACL reconstruction? A finite element analysis

One of the most common knee injuries is the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) rupture with severe implications on knee stability. The usual treatment is the ACL Reconstruction (ACLR) surgery where the surgeon replaces the torn ligament with a graft in an effort to restore knee kinematics. In case of excessive rotatory instability, Lateral Extra-Articular Tenodesis (LET) can be performed in combination with ACLR. Additionally, LET appears to reduce ACLR graft forces minimizing graft failure chances. However, there are concerns about overconstraining physiological rotation. To gain insight in this controversial topic, we developed an automatic, open-source tool to create a series of Finite Element (FE) models attempting to investigate the interactions of ACLR and LET through simulation. We started by creating a validated model of the healthy knee joint that served as reference for subsequent FE simulations. Then, we created FE models of standalone ACLR and combined ACLR-LET. Each model was assessed by applying a loading profile that resembles the reduction phase of the Pivot-Shift clinical exam. We measured the External Tibia Rotation (ETR), the Posterior Tibia Translation (PTT) of the lateral tibial compartment, and the ACLR graft stress developed around the femoral tunnel insertion site. We observed the following: a) LET reduces ETR and PTT compared to isolated ACLR, b) combined ACLR-LET is more sensitive to LET graft pretension with lower values showcasing performance closer to the healthy joint, c) LET reduces ACLR graft forces for the same pretension values, d) LET exhibits significant overconstraint for higher pretension values. In general, these findings are in agreement with relevant clinical studies and accentuate the potential of the developed framework as a tool that can assist orthopaedists during surgery planning. We provide open access for the FE models of this study to enhance research transparency, reproducibility and extensibility.

Quantum Efficiency Measurement and Modeling of Silicon Sensors Optimized for Soft X-ray Detection

Hybrid pixel detectors have become indispensable at synchrotron and X-ray free-electron laser facilities thanks to their large dynamic range, high frame rate, low noise, and large area. However, at energies below 3 keV, the detector performance is often limited because of the poor quantum efficiency of the sensor and the difficulty in achieving single-photon resolution due to the low signal-to-noise ratio. In this paper, we address the quantum efficiency of silicon sensors by refining the design of the entrance window, mainly by passivating the silicon surface and optimizing the dopant profile of the n+ region. We present the measurement of the quantum efficiency in the soft X-ray energy range for silicon sensors with several process variations in the fabrication of planar sensors with thin entrance windows. The quantum efficiency for 250 eV photons is increased from almost 0.5% for a standard sensor to up to 62% as a consequence of these developments, comparable to the quantum efficiency of backside-illuminated scientific CMOS sensors. Finally, we discuss the influence of the various process parameters on quantum efficiency and present a strategy for further improvement.

Multi-Action Knee Contact Force Prediction by Domain Adaptation

Most recent musculoskeletal dynamics estimation methods are designed for predefined actions, such as gait, and don't generalize to various tasks. In this work, we address the problem of estimating internal biomechanical forces during more than one actions by introducing unsupervised domain adaptation into a deep learning model. More specifically, we developed a Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory network for knee contact force prediction, enhanced with correlation alignment layers, in order to minimize the domain shift between kinematic data from different actions. Furthermore, we used the novel Neural State Machine (NSM) as a simulation platform to test and visualize our model predictions in a wide range of trajectories adapted to different 3D scene geometries in real-time. We conducted multiple experiments, including comparison with previous models, model alignment across action classes and real-to-synthetic data alignment. The results showed that the proposed deep learning architecture with domain adaptation performs better than the benchmark in terms of NRMSE and t-test. Overall, our method is capable of predicting knee contact forces for more than one action classes using a single architecture and thereby opens the path for estimating internal forces for intermediate actions, while the knowledge of the hidden state of motion may be used to support personalized rehabilitation. Moreover, our model can be easily integrated into any human motion simulation environment, which shows its potential in enabling biomechanical analysis in an automated and computationally efficient way.

Recent innovations in fertilization with treated digestate from food waste to recover nutrients for arid agricultural fields

This study aims to explore the development of sustainable fertilizers from waste materials of a biogas plant and a brewery. These wastes, rich in organic carbon and nitrogen, were processed with sulfuric(VI) and phosphoric(V) acid mixture, facilitating the production of free amino acids and achieving waste sanitization. This treatment produced by-products, which extended the range of possible applications. The highest concentration of free amino acids (360 mg/l) was achieved through hydrolyzing with a 40% concentration medium over 24 h. In this case, the maximum levels were recorded for beta-alanine (69.3 mg/l), glycine (46.8 mg/l), isoleucine (43.5 mg/l), proline (36.2 mg/l), and valine (31.5 mg/l). The study presents two fertilizer technologies, with and without micronutrients, that satisfy European Parliament Regulation 2019/1009 (Ntot > 2%, Norg > 0.5%, Corg > 3%). Bioavailability of nutrients in the formulations ranged from 60 to 100%. The efficacies of these fertilizers were evaluated in 30-day pot trials with various plant species, with both single application and fertigation tested. Multielement analysis confirmed high nutrient transfer in the soil-plant system, and the inclusion of micronutrients led to biofortification of plant biomass in Cu (48.3 ± 7.2 mg/kg), Mn (249 ± 37 mg/kg), Zn (164 ± 25 mg/kg), and Fe (211 ± 32 mg/kg). These sustainable fertilizers present an alternative to traditional, non-renewable fertilizers and offer promising solutions for precision agriculture and environmentally conscious production.

Waste Valorization towards Industrial Products through Chemo- and Enzymatic- Hydrolysis

This paper reviews the scientific literature on the latest technologies for treating waste by chemical hydrolysis, enzymatic hydrolysis and supporting processes. Particular attention is focused on wastes of biological origin, especially high-protein materials and those containing fats and sugars, as valuable components can be extracted from these recyclables to produce plant growth-stimulating compounds and animal feed, chemicals, biofuels or biopolymers. The wastes with the greatest potential were identified and the legislative regulations related to their processing were discussed. Chemical and enzymatic hydrolysis were compared and their main applications directions and important process parameters were indicated, as well as the need to optimize them in order to increase the efficiency of extraction of valuable components.

Assessing the emissions of short sea international shipping: a case study of the Mytilini-Ayvalik route

Short sea shipping involves transporting passengers and cargo between European ports and coastal countries bordering Europe on enclosed seas. Challenges include aging fleets and environmental concerns, but efforts to reduce emissions are in progress through the use of low-sulfur fuels, hybrid and electric vessels, and improved energy efficiency. This study focuses on emissions from international short shipping routes between Mytilini and Ayvalik, using standardized emission factors to calculate CO2, SO2, NOx, PM, and HC emissions. The research aims to bridge knowledge gaps and provide insights into these emissions, identifying the main commercial ships on the route, analyzing their emissions, and discussing the findings. Overall, six ships completed the route, consuming an average of 60 L of fuel per hour per 100 HP, depending on factors like speed and total load. Notably, NOx emissions are the highest, followed by sulfur oxides, with values exceeding 12.9 and 3.5 tons, respectively. As anticipated, cruising is the shipping practice with the highest energy footprint, amounting to 695 MWh. An essential discovery is that hoteling plays a significant role in energy consumption and emissions, accounting for 152 MWh out of the total 881 MWh consumed across all shipping practices. The potential adoption of hydrogen as a fuel holds the promise of substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, enhancements in air quality, and noise pollution mitigation.

Machine learning approaches for 3D motion synthesis and musculoskeletal dynamics estimation: A Survey

The inference of 3D motion and dynamics of the human musculoskeletal system has traditionally been solved using physics-based methods that exploit physical parameters to provide realistic simulations. Yet, such methods suffer from computational complexity and reduced stability, hindering their use in computer graphics applications that require real-time performance. With the recent explosion of data capture (mocap, video) machine learning (ML) has started to become popular as it is able to create surrogate models harnessing the huge amount of data stemming from various sources, minimizing computational time (instead of resource usage), and most importantly, approximate real-time solutions. The main purpose of this paper is to provide a review and classification of the most recent works regarding motion prediction, motion synthesis as well as musculoskeletal dynamics estimation problems using ML techniques, in order to offer sufficient insight into the state-of-the-art and draw new research directions. While the study of motion may appear distinct to musculoskeletal dynamics, these application domains provide jointly the link for more natural computer graphics character animation, since ML-based musculoskeletal dynamics estimation enables modeling of more long-term, temporally evolving, ergonomic effects, while offering automated and fast solutions. Overall, our review offers an in-depth presentation and classification of ML applications in human motion analysis, unlike previous survey articles focusing on specific aspects of motion prediction.

The combined rhizoremediation by a triad: plant-microorganism-functional materials

The article describes new strategies for the remediation of soils contaminated with organic and inorganic pollutants. The aim of this study is to investigate the synergistic effects of combining plant-microorganism-functional materials for a more effective reduction of soil contamination with toxic chemicals. The innovative triad involves functional materials as a habitat for microorganisms, which helps to control the release of pollutants into the soil solution from the adsorbed form. This, in turn, reduces the toxic effect on microorganisms and plants. Microorganisms play a complex role, consisting of partial biodegradation of pollutants, stimulation of plant growth, and support for nutrient supply. Plants synthesize root exudates that facilitate microorganisms in biodegrading organic pollutants and stimulate their growth. The plant takes up pollutants through the root system, which can be further supported by endophytic microorganisms. The cooperation of the three players produces a synergistic effect that enhances the effectiveness of rhizodegradation supported by functional materials, which is more effective than using microorganisms, phytoremediation, or functional materials alone. The combination of physicochemical methods (functional materials) and microbiological methods (bacteria and fungi, rhizosphere, symbiotic and non-symbiotic) supported by plants (hyperaccumulators) is a promising approach for reducing chemicals from soil. Key examples of the synergistic effects of combining plant-microorganism-functional materials have been provided in this article.

Maximizing the potential of leachate from sewage sludge as a sustainable nutrients source to alleviate the fertilizer crisis

Leachate from separate digesters in biological wastewater treatment plants contains valuable biogenic compounds that can serve as fertilizer nutrients. In this study, a method was developed to utilize leachate from sewage sludge dewatering as a raw material for the preparation of a plant conditioner, providing water, nutrients, and growth-stimulating amino acids. A chemical conditioning procedure (65% HNO₃) was used to prepare the leachate solution for fertilization. The feasibility of producing an amino acid-based fertilizer using shrimp shells and inorganic acids (96% H₂SO₄ and 85% H₃PO₄) was also demonstrated. Microbiological analysis confirmed the safety of the formulations, and chelation of micronutrients with available amino acids was proven (up to 100% chelating degree). The bioavailability of all nutrients was confirmed through extraction tests (extraction in neutral ammonium citrate). Germination tests showed similar fresh plant masses to those with commercial preparations, demonstrating the effectiveness of the developed technology. This approach aligns with circular economy principles and sustainable development and contributes to mitigating the impacts of climate change.

Predictive simulation of single-leg landing scenarios for ACL injury risk factors evaluation

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) rupture is a very common knee injury during sport activities. Landing after jump is one of the most prominent human body movements that can lead to such an injury. The landing-related ACL injury risk factors have been in the spotlight of research interest. Over the years, researchers and clinicians acquire knowledge about human movement during daily-life activities by organizing complex in vivo studies that feature high complexity, costs and technical and most importantly physical challenges. In an attempt to overcome these limitations, this paper introduces a computational modeling and simulation pipeline that aims to predict and identify key parameters of interest that are related to ACL injury during single-leg landings. We examined the following conditions: a) landing height, b) hip internal and external rotation, c) lumbar forward and backward leaning, d) lumbar medial and lateral bending, e) muscle forces permutations and f) effort goal weight. Identified on related research studies, we evaluated the following risk factors: vertical Ground Reaction Force (vGRF), knee joint Anterior force (AF), Medial force (MF), Compressive force (CF), Abduction moment (AbdM), Internal rotation moment (IRM), quadricep and hamstring muscle forces and Quadriceps/Hamstrings force ratio (Q/H force ratio). Our study clearly demonstrated that ACL injury is a rather complicated mechanism with many associated risk factors which are evidently correlated. Nevertheless, the results were mostly in agreement with other research studies regarding the ACL risk factors. The presented pipeline showcased promising potential of predictive simulations to evaluate different aspects of complicated phenomena, such as the ACL injury.

Tricks and tracks in waste management with a special focus on municipal landfill leachate: Leads and obstacles

Landfilling is the most widely used disposal method for municipal solid waste around the world. The main disadvantage of this strategy is formation of leachate, among other aspects. Landfill leachate contains highly toxic and bio-refractory substances that are detrimental to the environment and human health. Hence, the risk(s) of discharging potentially harmful landfill leachate into the environment need to be assessed and measured in order to make effective choices about landfill leachate management and treatment. In view of this, the present review aims to investigate (a) how landfill leachate is perceived as an emerging concern, and (b) the stakeholders' mid- to long-term policy priorities for implementing technological and integrative solutions to reduce the harmful effects of landfill leachate. Because traditional methods alone have been reported ineffective, and in response to emerging contaminants and stringent regulations, new effective and integrated leachate treatments have been developed. This study gives a forward-thinking of the accomplishments and challenges in landfill leachate treatment during the last decade. It also provides a comprehensive compilation of the formation and characterization of landfill leachate, the geo-environmental challenges that it raises, as well as the resource recovery and industrial linkage associated with it in order to provide an insight into its sustainable management.

Processing of nuisance animal waste into agricultural products

A technological solution was developed to process slaughter waste and farm manure and transform them into organic and mineral fertilizers. It has been shown that the formation of an enclosure on a goose farm from nitrogen-binding substances (brown coal, a mixture of brown coal with magnesite, used ash substrate) has a positive effect on reducing nitrogen emissions, even to about 80%. The presented solution is in line with ecological trends and ensures comprehensive management of agri-food waste. It reduces the loss of valuable nutrients from renewable sources, increases the efficiency of fertilizers and reduces the environmental nuisance of poultry farms. Organic-mineral fertilizers made from slaughterhouse waste and poultry manure were as effective as expensive commercial mineral fertilizers. New fertilizers helped to obtain a yield similar to the groups fertilized with mineral fertilizers: 11 t per ha for maize (grain), 0.8 t per ha for mustard (seed), 10 kg per 1 m² of radish (all), and 18.5 kg per 1 m² of beet (whole) while reducing production costs thanks to the use of waste materials.

Management of biological sewage sludge: Fertilizer nitrogen recovery as the solution to fertilizer crisis

In the current situation of a serious raw material crisis related to the disruption of supply chains, the bioeconomy is of particular significance. Rising prices and the problem with the availability of natural gas have made N fertilizers production very expensive. It is expected that due to natural gas shortages, conventional production of nitrogen fertilizers by chemical synthesis will be hindered in the coming season. An important alternative and an opportunity to solve the problems of fertilizer nitrogen availability are biological wastewater treatment plants, which can be treated as a renewable biological nitrogen mines. Sewage sludge (including activated sludge) contains up to 6-8% DM. N. Considering the quantity of sewage sludge generated in wastewater treatment plants, it can become an important raw material for the sustainable production of organic-mineral fertilizers from renewable resources available locally, with a low carbon footprint. Furthermore, the sewage sludge management method should take nitrogen retention into account and should not allow the emission of greenhouse gases containing nitrogen. This article analyzes the technological solutions of nitrogen recovery for fertilization purposes from biological wastewater treatment plants in the context of a new and difficult resource situation. Conventional and new nitrogen recovery methods were analyzed from the perspective of the current legal situation. An attempt was made to evaluate the possibility of implementing the assumptions of the circular economy through the recovery of renewable nitrogen resources from municipal wastewater treatment plants.

Tannery waste as a renewable source of nitrogen for production of multicomponent fertilizers with biostimulating properties

The studies presented in this work show that solid tannery waste-like shavings can be used as high-protein materials for fertilizer production following the concept of the circular economy. To select appropriate process parameters (mass ratio of shavings meal to the hydrolyzing agent (S:L), hydrolysis medium concentration, temperature) and to ensure the highest possible hydrolysis efficiency, it is useful to apply the well-known response surface methodology (RSM). The analyses revealed that chromium shavings (SCr) were most preferably treated with 10% KOH in a ratio of S:L 1:1 with the process being carried out at 160 °C (6.59% N). The optimal hydrolysis conditions for non-chromium (S) shavings were: S:L ratio 1:2, 10% H₂SO₄, and temperature 160 °C (4.08% N). Chromium concentrations in hydrolysates from S and SCr shavings obtained under optimal conditions were 15.2 mg/kg and 9483 mg/kg, respectively. Hydrolysate samples were analyzed by reversed-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) that revealed that the type of hydrolysis (acidic/alkaline) affects the amino acid profile. Approximately 4.5 times more amino acids were extracted in the KOH environment than during acidic treatment. The hydrolysates contained mainly glycine, alanine, and proline, which are primarily responsible for stimulating plant growth by supporting chlorophyll synthesis, chelating micronutrients, improving pollen fertility, or resistance to low temperatures. The conversion of tannery waste into fertilizer requires the control of contaminant levels, especially chromium, which can oxidize to the carcinogenic form Cr(VI) that is hazardous to humans and the environment.

Using greenhouse gases in the synthesis gas production processes: Thermodynamic conditions

The work concerns the thermodynamic analysis of CH₄ reforming with various oxidants (CO₂, H₂O, O₂) in the technological variants DRM (Dry Reforming of Methane) and TRM (Tri-reforming of Methane) technological variants. Both processes of synthesis gas production (raw material for the production of value-added products) are problematic in terms of environmental protection. In the process, two components of greenhouse gases are used as a substrate: CO₂ and CH₄. The influence of temperature, pressure, and the molar ratio of oxidants to methane on the efficiency of both processes was analyzed using the deterministic method: raw material conversion, product efficiency and selectivity - H₂ and CO, and the value of the H₂/CO ratio characterizing the suitability of the synthesis gas for various syntheses. The problem of carbon deposition tendency in DRM was minimized through the selection of operational process conditions, and in the case of TRM, it was fully reduced. The deterministic method of non-linear programming by defining the objective function with constraints helped formulate allowed one the values of TRM parameters: complete reduction of the coking problem, maintaining the H₂/CO ratio at the desired level - 2 and CO₂ conversion equal to 90%, led to a hydrogen efficiency of over 90%. This efficiency can be obtained at the process temperature T = 273 K, with a pressure of 1 atm, and the molar ratios of oxidants to methane: CH₄/CO₂/H₂O/O₂ = 1/0.36/0.77/0.01.

Hydrothermal and thermal-alkali pretreatments of wheat straw: Co-digestion, substrate solubilization, biogas yield and kinetic study

Agro-waste having lignocellulosic biomass is considered most effective (heating value 16 MJ/kg) for energy production through anaerobic digestion (AD). However, recalcitrant lignocellulosic fraction in agro-waste obstructs its biotransformation and is a rate-limiting step of the process. This study investigated the effects of hydrothermal and thermal-alkaline pretreatment on anaerobic co-digestion of wheat straw (WS). The hydrothermal pretreatment of WS revealed that 60 min was the best pretreatment time to achieve the highest substrate solubilization. It was employed for thermal-alkali pretreatment at variable temperatures and NaOH doses. Thermal-alkali pretreatment at 125°C-7% NaOH shows the highest (34%) biogas yield of 662 mL/gVS, followed by 646 mL/gVS biogas yield at 150°C-1% NaOH assay (31% higher) over control. Although the 125°C-7% NaOH assay achieved the highest biogas yield, the 150°C-1% NaOH assay was found more feasible considering the cost of a 6% higher chemical used in the earlier assay. The thermal-alkali pretreatment was observed to reduce the formation of recalcitrant compounds (HMF, Furfural) and increase the buffering capacity of the slurry over hydrothermal pretreatment. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the various pretreatment and AD operational parameters was carried out to study their in-depth correlation. Moreover, a kinetic study of the experimental data was performed to observe the biodegradation trend and compare it with the Modified Gompertz (MG) and First Order (FO) models.

Federated learning enables big data for rare cancer boundary detection

Although machine learning (ML) has shown promise across disciplines, out-of-sample generalizability is concerning. This is currently addressed by sharing multi-site data, but such centralization is challenging/infeasible to scale due to various limitations. Federated ML (FL) provides an alternative paradigm for accurate and generalizable ML, by only sharing numerical model updates. Here we present the largest FL study to-date, involving data from 71 sites across 6 continents, to generate an automatic tumor boundary detector for the rare disease of glioblastoma, reporting the largest such dataset in the literature (n = 6, 314). We demonstrate a 33% delineation improvement for the surgically targetable tumor, and 23% for the complete tumor extent, over a publicly trained model. We anticipate our study to: 1) enable more healthcare studies informed by large diverse data, ensuring meaningful results for rare diseases and underrepresented populations, 2) facilitate further analyses for glioblastoma by releasing our consensus model, and 3) demonstrate the FL effectiveness at such scale and task-complexity as a paradigm shift for multi-site collaborations, alleviating the need for data-sharing.

Biomass-based micronutrient fertilizers and biofortification of raspberries fruits

The increasing amount of bio-waste creates the need to develop a method for efficient management based on processes that are more environmentally friendly than incineration and composting. This research aimed to utilize the waste of raspberry seeds after supercritical CO2 extraction. The biomass was enriched with micronutrients by the biosorption process to prepare micronutrient fertilizers for organic farming and biofortification of raspberries fruits. It was observed that at 100% dose of micronutrients, raspberry crop yield increased by 3%, and transfer of micronutrients to fruit biomass increased by 4.7%, 6.4%, and 8.8% (Cu, Mn, Zn, respectively) compared to commercial fertilizer. The supply of micronutrients at a dose of 150% led to a significant increase in micronutrient content of 3%, 41%, and 8% (Cu, Mn, and Zn, respectively) compared to commercial fertilizer. Research shows that the application of higher doses of micronutrients leads to the enrichment of edible parts of fruits, and fertilizers ensure environmental safety. The fruits contained on average 11.5% more microelements compared to the groups fertilized with the commercial product. The fruit yield (9.09-10.4 Mg per hectare) and the sugar content (9.82-10.2%) were also the highest. The micronutrients released from fertilizers and available to plants throughout the vegetation period affect the increase in yield, especially in the case of plants fruiting several times a year.

Recent innovations in various methods of harmful gases conversion and its mechanism in poultry farms

Poultry breeding takes place in intensive, high-production systems characterized by high animal density, which is a source of harmful emission of odorous volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and greenhouse gases, which in turn sustain animal welfare. This study identified and examined the characteristics of chemical compounds emitted in intensive poultry farming (laying hens, broilers) and their toxicity, which led to recommending methods of deodorization. Emphasis was placed on the law relative to air purification in poultry farms. Various methods of air treatment in poultry farms have been described: the modification of animal diet to improve nutrient retention and decrease the amount of their excrement; chemical oxidation technologies (ozonation, photocatalysis, Fenton reaction); various types/brands of biofilters, bioscrubbers and membrane reactors. Numerous studies show that biofilters can reduce ammonia emissions by 51%, hydrogen sulfide by 80%, odors by 67%, while scrubbers brings down ammonia emissions by 77% and odors by 42%, and the application of UV light lowers ammonia emissions by 28%, hydrogen sulfide by 55%, odors by 69% and VOCs by 52%. The paper presents both the solutions currently used in poultry farming and those which are currently in the research and development phase and, as innovative solutions, could be implemented in the near future.

Valorisation of agri-food waste to fertilisers is a challenge in implementing the circular economy concept in practice

The area of agricultural wastes valorisation to fertilizers is attracting growing attention because of the increasing fertilizer prices of fertilizers and the higher costs of waste utilization. Despite the scientific and political interest in the concept of circular economy, few studies have considered the practical approach towards the implementation of elaborated technologies. This article outlines innovative strategies for the valorisation of different biobased wastes into fertilizers. The present work makes a significant contribution to the field of new ideas for waste biomass management to recover significant fertilizer nutrients. These results emphasize the importance of the biomass use as a base of renewable resources, which has recently gained special importance, especially in relation to the outbreak of pandemia and war. Broken supply chains and limited access to deposits of raw materials used in fertilizer production (natural gas, potassium salts) meant that now, as never before, it has become more important and feasible to implement the idea of a circular economy and a green deal. We have obtained satisfactory results that demonstrate that appropriate management of biological waste (originating from agriculture, food processing, aquaculture, forest, pharmaceutical industry, and other branches of industry, sewage sludge) will not only reduce environmental nuisance (reducing waste heaps), but will also allow recovery of valuable materials, such as nitrogen (especially valuable amino acids), phosphorus, potassium, microelements, and biologically active substances with properties that stimulate plant growth. The results reported here provide information on production of biobased plant protection products (bioagrochemicals) from agri-food waste. This work reports an overview of biopesticides and biofertilisers production technologies and summarizes their properties and the mechanisms of action.

Machine learning based analysis of stroke lesions on mouse tissue sections

An unbiased, automated and reliable method for analysis of brain lesions in tissue after ischemic stroke is missing. Manual infarct volumetry or by threshold-based semi-automated approaches is laborious, and biased to human error or biased by many false -positive and -negative data, respectively. Thereby, we developed a novel machine learning, atlas-based method for fully automated stroke analysis in mouse brain slices stained with 2% Triphenyltetrazolium-chloride (2% TTC), named "StrokeAnalyst", which runs on a user-friendly graphical interface. StrokeAnalyst registers subject images on a common spatial domain (a novel mouse TTC- brain atlas of 80 average mathematical images), calculates pixel-based, tissue-intensity statistics (z-scores), applies outlier-detection and machine learning (Random-Forest) models to increase accuracy of lesion detection, and produces volumetry data and detailed neuroanatomical information per lesion. We validated StrokeAnalyst in two separate experimental sets using the filament stroke model. StrokeAnalyst detects stroke lesions in a rater-independent and reproducible way, correctly detects hemispheric volumes even in presence of post-stroke edema and significantly minimizes false-positive errors compared to threshold-based approaches (false-positive rate 1.2-2.3%, p < 0.05). It can process scanner-acquired, and even smartphone-captured or pdf-retrieved images. Overall, StrokeAnalyst surpasses all previous TTC-volumetry approaches and increases quality, reproducibility and reliability of stroke detection in relevant preclinical models.

Catalytic valorisation of various paper wastes into levulinic acid, hydroxymethylfurfural, and furfural: Influence of feedstock properties and ferric chloride

Lignocellulosic paper waste constitutes a major waste stream globally, which should be valorised for chemical production. However, paper properties (e.g., feedstock composition, cellulosic crystallinity, and thermal stability/degradability) vary with raw materials and pulping processes. This study investigated levulinic acid (LA), hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and furfural production by H₂SO₄ and FeCl₃ catalysed conversion of nine types of paper wastes in a green solvent system (1:1 γ-valerolactone/water). At 160-180 °C for 1-20 min, ∼23-27 wt% LA yield was achieved from sanitary papers, tracing/parchment paper, and paper food box mainly containing crystalline cellulose, while a lower LA yield (∼10-20 wt%) was obtained from other paper wastes with high contents of ash and lignin. A higher selectivity towards HMF (∼12 mol%) was achieved in the presence of FeCl₃. A furfural yield of ∼ 4-7.5 wt% was also obtained from the hemicellulose content. This study elucidates crucial factors and desirable characteristics of paper waste for catalytic valorisation.

From hazardous waste to fertilizer: Recovery of high-value metals from smelter slags

This work proposes a method to valorize lead slag for fertilizer purposes. The research concept was to selectively recover valuable microelements (Cu(II), Fe(II), Zn(II) in an amount of at least 0.2% m/v of each) by chemical leaching while retaining toxic elements in the slag (i.e. As and Pb). Among acids, hydroxides, salts and their mixtures tested for slag treatment, it was potassium hydrogen sulfate and ammonia liquor under strongly oxidizing conditions (in the presence of hydrogen peroxide) that proved to be the most effective leaching agents. Response Surface Methodology applied to optimize the slag leaching conditions set the most favorable process parameters (concentration of leaching agents, slag to reagent weight ratio, and temperature). As a result, the concentration of Cu(II) in the extract was 3751 mg/L (for ammonia liquor) and Fe(II) and Zn(II) concentrations in potassium hydrogen sulfate were 4738 mg/L and 6102 mg/L, respectively. To close the life cycle of the waste, immobilization in polyethylene and binding to cement were indicated as methods to manage the solid waste material after leaching. The mixed extracts rich in Cu(II), Fe(II) and Zn(II) ions were tested in germination tests on cucumber. No phytotoxic effect was observed, which raises the possibility of utilizing the solutions after chemical leaching of slag as an alternative source of micronutrients for the production of multicomponent fertilizers. The results are promising and fit in the assumptions of circular economy.

Biochar in environmental friendly fertilizers - Prospects of development products and technologies

According to the circular economy concept, the production of fertilizers should be closed in a loop, which prevents excessive emissions and harmful effects to the environment. Biological wastes are problematic to collect and transport. They undergo a biological transformation that causes greenhouse gases emission and sanitary hazards. Biomass sources used for organic or organo-mineral fertilizers must be free of pathogens and rich in macro and microelements. Solid residues can be processed thermally. Biochar is a carbon produced by biomass pyrolysis without oxygen presence and has been used for many years to improve soil quality and enhance the efficiency of fertilization. There are many research works on the use of biochar in fertilization. This study is also extended by the latest developments and technologies from the patent database (recent year) and biochar-based fertilizers market. To the best of our knowledge, there is no such review currently available in scientific databases. Based on the collected data, the best method of biochar management was proposed - soil application. Biochar applied to soil has several advantages: it improves soil structure and its sorption capacity, enhances soil-nutrient retention and water-holding capacity, immobilizes contaminants from soil (sorption), reduces greenhouse gas emissions and soil nutrient leaching losses while stimulating the growth of a plant.

Tannery waste-derived biochar as a carrier of micronutrients essential to plants

The leather tannery industry generates about 33 Mt/year of solid waste with different properties, turning its management into a challenge. One of the valorization methods of tannery wastes is the production of biochar by pyrolysis of leather scratches. Biochar's sorption properties and its high nitrogen content (10%) make it suitable for its application as a soil conditioner or carrier of microelements for fertilizers. The paper presents an innovative spray method to enrich biochar with cationic micronutrients: Cu, Mn, Zn. Enriched biochar contained 1095 mg/kg Cu(II), 1334 mg/kg Mn(II) and 1205 mg/kg Zn(II). The high bioavailability of nutrients and the effectiveness of the new fertilizer were demonstrated in extraction in vitro tests - the analysis of leachability of elements to water and bioavailability of micro-nutrients. The functional properties of enriched biochar were examined in vivo (germination, pot) tests. A high biomass increase (approximately 10%) was observed compared to the group fertilized with a commercial product. The proposed solution benefits the environment in that it is made from alternative resources from which innovative fertilizers are produced according to the circular economy concept.

The challenges and perspectives for anaerobic digestion of animal waste and fertilizer application of the digestate

The increase in livestock production creates a serious problem of managing animal waste and by-products. Among the wide range of waste valorization methods available, anaerobic digestion is very promising. It is a form of material recycling that also produces renewable energy in the form of biogas, which is reminiscent of energy recycling. The effluent and digestate from the anaerobic digestion process need to be processed further. These materials are widely used in agriculture due to their composition. Both the liquid and solid fractions of digestate are high in nitrogen, making them a valuable source for plants. Before soil or foliar application, conditioning (e.g., with inorganic acids) and neutralization (e.g., with potassium hydroxide) is required to eliminate odorous compounds and microorganisms. Various methods of conducting the process by anaerobic digestion (use of additives increasing activity of microorganisms, co-digestion, multiple techniques of substrate preparation) and the possibility of controlling process parameters such as optimal C/N ratio (15-30), optimal temperature (psychrophilic (<20 °C), mesophilic (35-37 °C) and thermophilic (55 °C) for microorganism activity ensure high efficiency of the process. Literature data describing tests of various digestates on different plants prove high efficiency, determined by yield increase (even by 28%), nitrogen uptake (by 20%) or phosphorus recovery rate (by 43%) or increase of biometric parameters (e.g., leaf area).

Phosphorus recovery from wastewater and bio-based waste: an overview

Phosphorus is one of the most important macronutrients needed for the growth of plants. The fertilizer production market uses 80% of natural, non-renewable phosphorus resources in the form of phosphate rock. The depletion of those deposits forces a search for other alternatives, including biological waste. This review aims to indicate the most important ways to recover phosphorus from biowaste, with particular emphasis on wastewater, sewage sludge, manure, slaughter or food waste. A comparison of utilized methods and directions for future research based on the latest research is presented. Combining biological, chemical, and physical methods with thermal treatment appears to be the most effective way for the treatment of wastewater sludge in terms of phosphorus recovery. Hydrothermal, thermochemical, and adsorption on thermally treated adsorbents are characterized by a high phosphorus recovery rate (over 95%). For animal by-products and other biological waste, chemical methods seems to be the most optimal solution with a recovery rate over 96%. Due to its large volume and relatively low phosphorus content, wastewater is a resource that requires additional treatment to recover the highest possible amount of phosphorus. Pretreatment of wastewater with combined methods seems to be a possible way to improve phosphorus recovery. A compressive evaluation of combined methods is crucial for future research in this area.

Laser fabrication and evaluation of holographic intrinsic physical unclonable functions

Optical Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs) are well established as the most powerful anticounterfeiting tool. Despite the merits of optical PUFs, widespread use is hindered by existing implementations that are complicated and expensive. On top, the overwhelming majority of optical PUFs refer to extrinsic implementations. Here we overcome these limitations to demonstrate for the first time strong intrinsic optical PUFs with exceptional security characteristics. In doing so, we use Computer-Generated Holograms (CGHs) as optical, intrinsic, and image-based PUFs. The required randomness is offered by the non-deterministic fabrication process achieved with industrial friendly, nanosecond pulsed fiber lasers. Adding to simplicity and low cost, the digital fingerprint is derived by a setup which is designed to be adjustable in a production line. In addition, we propose a novel signature encoding and authentication mechanism that exploits manifold learning techniques to efficiently differentiate data reconstruction-related variation from counterfeit attacks. The proposed method is applied experimentally on silver plates. The robustness of the fabricated intrinsic optical PUFs is evaluated over time. The results have shown exceptional values for robustness and a probability of cloning up to \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$10^{-14}$$\end{document}10-14, which exceeds the standard acceptance rate in security applications.

Valorization of poultry slaughterhouse waste for fertilizer purposes as an alternative for thermal utilization methods

Slaughterhouse waste and dead animals are mainly disposed of by incineration, which generates greenhouse gases and NO_x. These wastes are a source of nutrients that can be recovered by circular economy techniques if material recycling is given a priority over energy recovery. To valorize high-protein animal waste (containing bones, meat, feather) for fertilizer purposes, the waste was processed by acid solubilization and neutralized with potassium hydroxide solution, which yielded a liquid fertilizer with plant growth biostimulating properties (due to the amino acids presence). The composition analysis showed that new fertilizers met all quality requirements set by the law, contain ~0.5% m/m amino acids and are microbiologically pure. The fertilizer was enriched with microelements to the level of 0.2% m/m and tested for biological effectiveness in germination tests and field studies. Compared with the commercial formulation, the fertilizer increased stem length and chlorophyll content (by 8.2% and 27.0%, respectively), wheat crop yield and grain micronutrients density (Cu by 31.2%, Mn by 10.5%, Zn by 33.9%) and improved the wheat flour baking properties. The described solution propose a safe way to utilize hazardous waste via technological mobile installation, enabling no transportation of waste, which is an important aspect of sanitary-epidemiological risk minimization.

Biodegradation of pharmaceuticals in photobioreactors - a systematic literature review

This work is a systematic review that reports state-of-the-art in removal of pharmaceuticals from water and wastewater by photosynthetic organisms in photobioreactors. The PRISMA protocol-based review of the most recent literature data from the last 10 years (2011–2021) was reported. Articles were searched by the combination of the following keywords: photobioreactor, pharmaceuticals, drugs, hormones, antibiotics, biodegradation, removal, wastewater treatment. The review focuses on original research papers (not reviews), collected in 3 scientific databases: Scopus, Web of Knowledge, PubMed. The review considered the following factors: type of microorganisms, type of micropollutants removed, degradation efficiency and associated products, types of photosynthetic organisms and photobioreactor types. The conclusion from the systematic review is that the main factors that limit widespread pharmaceuticals removal in photobioreactors are high costs and the problem of low efficiency related with low concentrations of pharmaceuticals. The review indicated a need for further research in this area due to increasing amounts of metabolites in the food chain, such as p-aminophenol and estrone, which can cause harm to people and ichthyofauna. Pharmaceuticals removal can be improved by adapting the type of microorganism used to the type of contamination and implementing photoperiods, which increase the removal efficiency of e.g. sulfamethazine by up to 28%. In the future, it is necessary to search for new solutions in terms of the construction of photobioreactors, as well as for more effective species in terms of pharmaceuticals biodegradation that can survive the competition with other strains during water and wastewater treatment.

Landing Site Detection for Autonomous Rotor Wing UAVs Using Visual and Structural Information

The technology of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has increasingly become part of many civil and research applications in recent years. UAVs offer high-quality aerial imaging and the ability to perform quick, flexible and in-depth data acquisition over an area of interest. While navigating in remote environments, UAVs need to be capable of autonomously landing on complex terrains for security, safety and delivery reasons. This is extremely challenging as the structure of these terrains is often unknown, and no prior knowledge can be leveraged. In this study, we present a vision-based autonomous landing system for rotor wing UAVs equipped with a stereo camera and an inertial measurement unit (IMU). The landing site detection algorithm introduces and evaluates several factors including terrain’s flatness, inclination and steepness. Considering these features we compute map metrics that are used to obtain a landing-score map, based on which we detect candidate landing sites. The 3D reconstruction of the scene is acquired by stereo processing and the pose of the UAV at any given time is estimated by fusing raw data from the inertial sensors with the pose obtained from stereo ORB-SLAM2. Real-world trials demonstrate successful landing in unknown and complex terrains such as suburban and forest areas.

New directions for agricultural wastes valorization as hydrogel biocomposite fertilizers

The tremendous amount of waste is an environmental and social problem worldwide. The agri-food sector is the largest producer of waste and requires the extensive use of fertilizers, which entails the need to look for innovative solutions in waste management. Properly recycled bio-waste can be reused as fertilizer. Polymer capsules with immobilized waste biomass can be applied as carriers for fertilizer nutrients. The amount of components exerts a certain influence on the effectiveness of copper ions binding. The most important physicochemical properties of biocomposites, such as swelling, SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) were investigated. FTIR analyzes revealed that carboxyl and hydroxyl groups play a key role in Cu²⁺ ion binding. Morphology analysis showed that ion binding leads to homogenization of the composite surface, while coating the structure makes it more regular and cohesive. The sorption kinetics and the determination of the process's equilibrium parameters (Q_max = 29.4 ± 0.493 mg g^-1) play an important role. The study of Cu²⁺ ion release in different media showed that the chitosan layer slowed down the diffusion of cations by about 50% in NaNO₃ (1% m/m) solution. Preliminary studies of the applicability of the capsules in germination tests demonstrate that the biocomposites have no phytotoxic effects on the test plant. The chitosan coating slows the release of Cu²⁺ ions by about 20% compared to uncoated capsules. New fertilizer formulations containing chitosan-encapsulated hydrogel with biomass-immobilized micronutrients can be applied for precision agriculture to minimize the loss of fertilizer nutrients to the environment. These fertilizers could be used to cultivate houseplants and greenhouse crops.

Agricultural and non-agricultural directions of bio-based sewage sludge valorization by chemical conditioning

This literature review outlines the most important-agricultural and non-agricultural-types of sewage sludge management. The potential of waste sludge protein hydrolysates obtained by chemical sludge conditioning was reported. The discussed areas include acidic and alkaline hydrolysis, lime conditioning, polyelectrolyte dewatering and other supporting techniques such as ultrasounds, microwave or thermal methods. The legislative aspects related to the indication of the development method and admission to various applications based on specified criteria were discussed. Particular attention was devoted to the legally regulated content of toxic elements: cadmium, lead, nickel, mercury, chromium and microelements that may be toxic: copper and zinc. Various methods of extracting valuable proteins from sewage sludge have been proposed: chemical, physical and enzymatic. While developing the process concept, you need to consider extraction efficiency (time, temperature, humidity, pH), drainage efficiency of post-extraction residues and directions of their management. The final process optimization is crucial. Despite the development of assumptions for various technologies, excess sewage sludge remains a big problem for sewage treatment plants. The high costs of enzymatic hydrolysis, thermal hydrolysis and ultrasonic methods and the need for a neutralizing agent in acid solubilization limit the rapid implementation of these processes in industrial practice.

Innovative high digestibility protein feed materials reducing environmental impact through improved nitrogen-use efficiency in sustainable agriculture

Sustainable development in agriculture brings both environmental and economic benefits. Contemporary agriculture is also about increasing nutrient use efficiency, especially nitrogen, as the critical nutrient causing the most significant environmental pressure. This creates the need to produce highly digestible protein feed with high bioavailability, reducing losses of biogenic elements to feces. In this review, the latest trends and the potential for their implementation in sustainable agriculture have been compared, as well as the need to reduce the negative environmental impact of agriculture has been demonstrated. Applying local protein sources to feed animals reduces greenhouse gas emissions associated with transportation. The production of highly digestible fodder leads to a reduction in environmental pollution caused by excessive nitrogen outflows. Another approach indecreasing ammonia emissions from livestock farming is feed protein reduction and amino acid supplementation. All of the aforementioned approaches may result in beneficial long-term changes, contributing to environmental safety, animal welfare and human health.

Potential environmental pollution from copper metallurgy and methods of management

This paper presents the latest overview of the environmental impact of wastes from the non-ferrous metallurgical industry. Ashes, slags and dusts - by-products from mining and metal processing - are sources of toxic metals, such as Pb, Cd, Hg, As, Al, as well as particulate matter. Physical, chemical and biological processes transform industrial wastes and cause water, soil and air pollution. Improperly protected heaps are subject to wind erosion and rain water leaching. Heavy metals and particulate matter are transported over long distances, contaminating the soil, living areas, watercourses, while in combination with mist they create smog. Water erosion releases heavy metals, which are leached into groundwater or surface runoff. This paper focuses on the range of pollution emissions from non-ferrous metallurgy wastes, hazards, mechanisms of their formation and fallouts, on the current state of technology and technological risk reduction solutions. The impact of pollution on human health and the biosphere, and methods of waste reduction in this industry sector are also presented. A sustainable and modern mining industry is the first step to cleaner production.

Towards upscaling the valorization of wheat straw residues: alkaline pretreatment using sodium hydroxide, enzymatic hydrolysis and biogas production

Lignocellulosic biomass is considered as a recalcitrant substrate for anaerobic digestion due to its complex nature that limits its biological degradation. Therefore, suitable preprocessing for the improvement of the performance of conventional anaerobic digestion remains a challenge in the development of anaerobic digestion technology. The physical and chemical characteristics of wheat straw (WS), as a representative lignocellulosic biomass, have a significant impact on the anaerobic digestion process in terms of quantity and quality of the produced biogas. This study aimed at investigating the enzymatic saccharification and detoxification of straw prior to anaerobic digestion with the final objective of enhancing the performance of conventional anaerobic systems of recalcitrant fractions of agricultural waste. The experimental activity was performed in lab and pilot scale treating WS. Alkaline delignification of straw using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) was studied prior to enzymatic hydrolysis for the production of easily biodegradable sugars. After defining the optimum conditions for the pretreatment scheme, the anaerobic digestability of the effluents produced was measured. Finally, the final liquid effluents were fed to a pilot scale anaerobic digester of 0.5 m³ volume, applying an increasing organic loading rate (OLR) regime (in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD) from 0.2 to 15 kg COD/m³/day). The optimum conditions for the delignification and enzymatic hydrolysis of WS were defined as 0.5 M NaOH at 50 °C for 3-5 h and 15 μL Cellic CTec2/g pretreated straw at 50 °C. It was proven that the resulting liquid effluents could be fed to an anaerobic digester in the ratio that they are produced with satisfactory COD removal efficiencies (over 70%) for OLRs up to 10 kg COD/m³/day. This value is correspondent to a hydraulic retention time of around 7.5 days, much lower than the respective one for untreated straw (over 12 days).

The potential environmental risks of the utilization of composts from household food waste

Modern technologies (especially with the help of autonomous measurement and control systems) introduced automatic composters for the disposal of household food waste production. Environmental risks connected with the utilization of these composts can be characterized by the high electrical conductivity caused by a presence of sodium chloride in food. Electrical conductivity influences the ecotoxicity of the composts. The presence of pesticides in composted food also represents an important environmental problem. The following pesticides were found in compost samples from household food waste: 1,3,5-triazine, methyl trithion, bifenthrin, bifenox, carbophenothion, pirimicarb, dioxacarb, desmetryn. Pesticide content in composts varied from 0.3 to 16.3 μg/kg, the average value being 30.4 ± 10.1 μg/kg dry matter. The higher decomposition was found of "modern" pesticides in the composters. The removal of salts can ensure that inhibition will be < 30% while washing with the ratio of 1:3 will result in the inhibition < 5%. However, this way of processing is not effective for other organisms-Poecilia reticulata (mortality 100%) and Daphnia magna (immobilisation 100%) using this procedure as well as washing of the compost in the ratio 3:1.

Total Knee Replacement: Subject-Specific Modeling, Finite Element Analysis, and Evaluation of Dynamic Activities

This study presents a semi-automatic framework to create subject-specific total knee replacement finite element models, which can be used to analyze locomotion patterns and evaluate knee dynamics. In recent years, much scientific attention was attracted to pre-clinical optimization of customized total knee replacement operations through computational modeling to minimize post-operational adverse effects. However, the time-consuming and laborious process of developing a subject-specific finite element model poses an obstacle to the latter. One of this work's main goals is to automate the finite element model development process, which speeds up the proposed framework and makes it viable for practical applications. This pipeline's reliability was ratified by developing and validating a subject-specific total knee replacement model based on the 6th SimTK Grand Challenge data set. The model was validated by analyzing contact pressures on the tibial insert in relation to the patient's gait and analysis of tibial contact forces, which were found to be in accordance with the ones provided by the Grand Challenge data set. Subsequently, a sensitivity analysis was carried out to assess the influence of modeling choices on tibial insert's contact pressures and determine possible uncertainties on the models produced by the framework. Parameters, such as the position of ligament origin points, ligament stiffness, reference strain, and implant-bone alignment were used for the sensitivity study. Notably, it was found that changes in the alignment of the femoral component in reference to the knee bones significantly affect the load distribution at the tibiofemoral joint, with an increase of 206.48% to be observed at contact pressures during 5° internal rotation. Overall, the models produced by this pipeline can be further used to optimize and personalize surgery by evaluating the best surgical parameters in a simulated manner before the actual surgery.

Gasification of spent pot-lining from the aluminum industry

Abstract

Aluminum production generates enormous spent pot lining (SPL) waste of around one million tons yearly, and these wastes are usually disposed in landfills. Hence, the technical feasibility of SPL gasification using both equilibrium and reactive high-fidelity modeling was evaluated in this study. Three SPL with different washing treatment, i.e., water (WWSPL), acid treated (ATSPL), and full treated (FTSPL, a combination of both water and acid washing) were used for the modeling. The equilibrium model considered twelve species, while the high-fidelity simulation was modeled with multiple species. Moreover, the high fidelity model is governed by the steady non-isothermal Navier–Stokes equation coupled with the discrete phase in Eulerian–Lagrangian scheme. The process metrics were assessed via the produced syngas fraction (CO/H2) and gasification efficiency (GE). The equilibrium analysis of WWSPL, ATSPL, FTSPL, respectively, resulted in GE of 40, 65, and 75%. The corresponding syngas molar fractions for CO and H2 were 0.804 and 0.178 at 1450 °C; 0.769 and 0.159 at 1100 °C; and 0.730 and 0.218 at 1150 °C. These results suggest the potentiality and feasibility of gasifying the treated SPL, which was considered in the high-fidelity. Although the results show different trend from equilibrium for the FTSPL gasification (i.e., small molar fraction of CO2 and H2O and high syngas fraction dominated by CO at 0.75 and 0.1 H2 at best GE of 70%), it re-emphasizes the potential of the gasification of FTSPL as recyclable/renewable energy source.

CO2 from waste to resource by developing novel mixed matrix membranes

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were fabricated by the hydrothermal synthesis of ordered mesoporous KIT-6 type silica and incorporating in polyimide (P84). KIT-6 and MMMs were characterized to evaluate morphology, thermal stability, surface area, pore volume, and other characteristics. SEM images of synthesized MMMs and permeation data of CO₂ suggested homogenous dispersion of mesoporous fillers and their adherence to the polymer matrix. The addition of KIT-6 to polymer matrix improved the permeability of CO₂ due to the increase in diffusivity through porous particles. The permeability was 3.2 times higher at 30% loading of filler. However, selectivity showed a slight decrease with the increase in filler loadings. The comparison of gas permeation results of KIT-6 with the well-known MCM-41 revealed that KIT-6 based MMMs showed 14% higher permeability than that of MMMs composed of mesoporous MCM-41. The practical commercial viability of synthesized membranes was examined under different operating temperatures and mixed gas feeds. Mesoporous KIT-6 silica is an attractive additive for gas permeability enhancement without compromising the selectivity of MMMs. Graphical abstract.

3D printing filament as a second life of waste plastics-a review

In recent times, the issue of plastic recycling has become one of the leading issues of environmental protection and waste management. Polymer materials have been found an application in many areas of daily life and industry. Along with their extended use, the problem of plastic wastes appeared because, after withdrawal from use, they became persistent and noxious wastes. The possibility of reusing polymeric materials gives a possibility of valorization-a second life-and enables effective waste utilization to obtain consumable products. The 3D printing market is a well-growing sector. Printable filaments can be made from a variety of thermoplastic materials, including those from recycling. This paper focuses on a review of the available literature on the production of filaments for 3D printers from recycled polymers as the alternative to present approach of central selective collection of plastics. The possibility of recycling of basic thermoplastic materials and the impact of processing on their physicochemical and mechanical properties were verified (Lanzotti et al. 2019). In addition, commercially available filaments produced from recycled materials and devices which allow self-production of filaments to 3D printing from plastic waste were reviewed.

Evaluation of the biogas potential of agricultural biomass waste for energy applications in Greece: A case study of the western Greece region

Agricultural biomass can be best described as the organic matter residues from farming that remain within the fields after harvesting, along with tree trimmings. From the overall Greek Energy Balance, only a small fraction consists of biomass and this has been the main driving force behind this study. Due to the numerous ongoing agricultural activities, western Greece was selected as an ideal area for a case study. As a second step, the aim was to investigate the feasibility of the current anaerobic digestion plants to utilize the total biomass as feedstock. An additional scope to provide certifiable proof of the essential rural biomass assets available. Information on the potential of agricultural biomass is provided, with a focus on the performance specifications and the social advantages, but also the soil added substances and the produced biofuels. Subsequently, two options for waste management were discussed to illustrate the possibility of generating energy. The anaerobic digestion plants available in western Greece are illustrated in detail and the yearly rate of the main agrarian biomass is evaluated to be 715,080 tons. Arable crops, mechanical plants and tree trimming are recorded as the noteworthy sources. It is estimated that the proposed anaerobic digestion system will handle the entire amount of biomass and deliver max per year electricity 775 GWh and thermal energy 1.119 GWh.
