Abstract
Background Food addiction and an impulsive personality can increase overeating, which can lead to weight gain. The amygdala and nucleus accumbens (NAcc) are critical for regulating obesogenic behaviour. However, whether the amygdala or the NAcc acts as the neural basis for the regulation of food addiction, impulsive personality, and body weight remains unclear. Methods We examined the differences in the volume of the amygdala and NAcc, especially the lateralization index (LI), between 33 obese participants and 39 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. The associations of the LI of each brain region with clinical variables and body mass index (BMI) were identified using network analysis. Finally, we explored the relationships among the LIs of brain regions, impulsive personality, food addiction, and BMI through a multiple chain mediation model. Results We observed a significant decrease in the LI of the amygdala in the obese group compared with the healthy group (F = 20.276, p < 0.001), which indicates that the right amygdala was larger than the left amygdala in the obese group. Network analysis revealed that the LI of the amygdala was very closely associated with nonplanning impulsivity, food addiction and BMI. The results of the mediation analysis indicated that increased nonplanning impulsiveness could lead to weight gain through increased food addiction (β = 0.069, SE = 0.043, 95% CI [0.014, 0.184]). Moreover, in this symptom chain, the LI of the amygdala can mediate the relationship between food addiction and BMI (β = 0.018, SE = 0.014, 95% CI [0.002, 0.061]). Conclusion Our observations indicate a substantial reduction in the LI of the amygdala among individuals with obesity, suggesting a structural predisposition. The findings reveal a potential neural mechanism that can help explain the interplay between impulsivity, food addiction, and obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the potential clinical and treatment relevance of food addiction (FA) among individuals with schizophrenia, the scientific literature on its characteristics and correlates within this population is sparse. Limited knowledge on FA in patients with schizophrenia may impede progress in developing effective treatments for pathological eating patterns and the common obesity and metabolic syndrome problems in this population. Considering these research gaps, the present study aimed to compare the nature and prevalence of FA symptoms among patients with first-episode schizophrenia, their siblings, and healthy controls. As a secondary objective, this study sought to examine the psychopathological correlates of FA in the patients' group. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in Razi Hospital, Tunis, Tunisia, from January to June 2024. A total of 112 newly diagnosed, clinically stabilized patients with first-episode schizophrenia, 77 of their unaffected siblings and 78 healthy controls were included. FA was assessed using the modified version of the Yale Food Addiction Scale (mYFAS 2.0). The Metacognitions Questionnaire (MCQ-30) and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire were administered to the patients' group. RESULTS Findings showed a higher prevalence of FA in the patient group (32.1%) compared to both siblings (13.0%) and controls (9.0%). Siblings had higher FA scores compared to controls (16.12 ± 4.95 versus 15.00 ± 6.09; p < 0.001). After Bonferroni correction for multiple testing, higher FA scores were significantly associated with less cognitive self-consciousness (Beta = - 0.54), older age (Beta = 0.45), and higher psychological distress (Beta = 0.63). CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that people with first-episode schizophrenia are likely to present with co-occurring FA, and experience associated distress. Findings also provide initial support for a possible connection between dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs and FA in patients with schizophrenia, suggesting that cognitive self-consciousness may be a fundamental cognitive process in FA in this population. This may lend some theoretical and clinical implications for alleviating FA symptoms in schizophrenia.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to identify the prevalence of food addiction (FA) and binge eating (BE) in a general Polish population, to explore the differences between these constructs, and to examine psychological differences among FA, BE, and FA + BE groups. 2123 participants completed the questionnaires: Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0, Binge Eating Scale, The PTSD Checklist for DSM-5, Life Events Checklist, Adverse Childhood Experiences, Short UPPS-P scale (impulsive traits), Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire and Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale - 21 items. 492 participants reported clinically significant symptoms of FA, BE, or both. Spearman's correlations, Mann-Whitney U tests, and Kruskal-Wallis tests were performed to examine the relationships between variables. The present study showed that FA and BE symptoms are common in the adult sample. The FA, BE and FA + BE groups had higher scores than the control group for all variables included in the study. The FA + BE group presented a significantly higher level of behavioral and emotional symptoms, followed by the FA and the BE group with less severity of symptoms. This study supports the hypothesis of food addiction as a similar construct to BE. FA is a broader concept than BE, but individuals experiencing both indicated the greatest functional difficulties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the effectiveness of bariatric surgery, there remains a high rate of attrition from surgical programs, highlighting the need to understand factors that influence presurgical attrition rates. OBJECTIVES To investigate the association between food addiction (FA) symptomatology and attrition from bariatric surgery. SETTING Surgical weight-loss program at a single academic medical center. METHODS Data for this analysis were collected from August 2020 until August 2022. Measures included sociodemographic variables, mental health, eating assessments, and FA symptomatology. Data were analyzed using a combination of descriptive statistics, univariable logistic regressions, and a multivariable stepwise logistic regression model. RESULTS A total of 505 adult patients were included (76.98% female, mean age 42.61 years, 263 [52.08%] undergoing surgery). FA scores were significantly and positively correlated with surgical attrition, current food insecurity, anxiety and depression symptoms, internalized weight bias, lower dietary quality, and distress and impairment due to FA. In the multivariable model, only current food insecurity, depressive symptoms, internalized weight bias, and impairment caused by FA were significant predictors of surgical attrition. CONCLUSIONS Although the number of FA symptoms was not associated in the multivariable model, impairment attributable to FA remained a significant predictor of surgical attrition. This trend suggests that an evaluation of FA may reflect a complex network of factors. Further, FA may not be a predictor of surgical attrition in the absence of perceived clinically significant impairment. Additional research should explore the relationship between impairment attributable to FA and surgical attrition to test the generalizability of these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity is one of the most common health problems worldwide. Although studies have reported associations between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and obesity, specific subtype associations and sex differences are unclear. OBJECTIVE To systematically evaluate the association between ACEs and adult obesity risk and sex differences. METHODS Five databases, PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase, and PsycINFO, were searched with a June 10, 2024 deadline. Included studies investigated the association between at least one ACE and obesity. Two researchers independently assessed the risk of bias using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) and its adaptations and extracted relevant characteristics and outcomes. Statistical analyses were performed using STATA 17.0, including random effects models, heterogeneity tests, sensitivity analyses, publication bias assessments, Meta-regression analyses, and subgroup analyses. Dose-response analyses revealed potential trends between different levels of abuse and risk of obesity. RESULTS The meta-analysis included 46 studies and showed a notable increased risk of obesity in adults experiencing ACEs (OR: 1.48, 95% CI: 1.38-1.59). Subgroup analyses showed significantly increased risk in Europe and North America, with significant increases observed in both developed and developing countries. Prospective, retrospective, and cross-sectional studies showed strong associations. Different types of ACEs (physical, sexual, psychological, and non-physical, psychological, or sexual abuse) were linked to a higher obesity risk. Sex difference analyses showed that females faced a greater risk when experiencing physical (OR: 1.606), sexual (OR: 1.581), and non-physical, psychological, or sexual (OR: 1.319) abuse; males exhibited increased risk only with non-physical, psychological, or sexual abuse (OR: 1.240). Dose-response analyses indicated that a higher number of ACEs was associated with an increased risk of obesity in adults. CONCLUSIONS ACEs significantly increase the risk of adult obesity, with consistent findings across geographic regions, levels of economic development, and types of study design. Sex difference analysis indicates that females are particularly affected. Future research should prioritize including studies from underrepresented geographic areas to enhance understanding of the global impact of ACEs on obesity risk. Additionally, strengthening child protection and intervention efforts is crucial to mitigate the adverse effects of ACEs on adult health.

Abstract
Background Food addiction (FA), where an individual displays a loss of control over the consumption of calorie-dense foods (refined carbohydrates, fats), is proposed to be like substance-use disorders with the experience of cravings, reduced control over intake, increased impulsivity, and altered reward-sensitivity. FA may also be associated with obesity. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of FA in urban and rural areas, and the proportion of obesity in young adults with FA. Methods This cross-sectional study involved 480 participants (240 each from urban and rural populations). Sociodemographic information and anthropometric measurements were recorded. The Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS), designed to assess signs of addictive-like eating behaviour, was used to determine which individuals had FA. Results Young adults (208 males and 272 females) with an average age of 21.6 years were included. FA was found in 40 (16.7%) urban and 28 (11.7%) rural subjects. Among 68 subjects with FA, 48 (70.5%) were obese and 20 (29.4%) were non-obese. The most frequent FA symptom in the urban and rural subjects was a persistent desire to eat or a repeated failure to quit in 228 (95%) and 192 (80%) subjects, respectively, followed by the development of tolerance in 108 (45.0%) and 60 (25%) subjects, respectively. Conclusion Food addiction is common in young adults and is higher in urban than in rural populations. The association of FA with indicators of obesity is high. Studying the prevalence of FA in different population groups can also enable a better understanding of the concept and its pathophysiology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Restrained eating has been related to psychological distress like anxiety and eating disorder symptomatology, but little is known about this relationship in daily life in non-clinical populations. We aimed to understand concurrent and temporal associations between momentary anxiety and restrained eating in everyday life within and across persons in a non-clinical sample, and examined whether this association remains after controlling for eating disorder symptomatology. METHODS We used a 10-day ecological momentary assessment (EMA) protocol. Participants (n = 123) completed a baseline survey with demographics and eating disorder symptomatology questions, and three EMA surveys per day reporting anxiety and restrained eating intentions. We applied mixed-effects and random intercept cross-lagged models to analyze the data. RESULTS Momentary anxiety and restrained eating were concurrently significantly positively associated within and between persons. When participants had more anxiety than was typical for them, they were more likely to intend to restrain eating, and people with overall higher anxiety symptoms tended to report greater restrained eating over the study period. These associations remained significant after adjusting for eating disorder symptomatology. There were no significant temporal cross-lagged effects. Anxiety-restrained eating association did not spill over into the next assessment window. LIMITATIONS The time window between prompts may have been too long to capture potential temporal effects, and we did not examine actual behavioral food restrictions. CONCLUSION Daily-life anxiety may be related to concurrent restrained eating intentions, above and beyond baseline eating disorder symptomatology. Research is needed exploring daily-life anxiety as a potential intervention target to address restrained eating.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although people receiving means-tested benefits are regularly taken care of at the job center, little is known about their mental health situation and mental health care. OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to describe the diagnostic spectrum and the functional status as well as the mental health care utilization of individuals with mental illnesses who are receiving means-tested benefits. METHODS Mentally ill people with means-tested benefits were recruited at the job center as part of the "Leipzig Individual Placement and Support for Mentally Ill People" (LIPSY) project, where they were initially diagnosed according to ICD-10 and included in the project if they had a mental disorder. Mental healthcare utilization was recorded. In the present study, data from n = 583 consecutively included persons were analyzed descriptively and by multivariate statistics. RESULTS Of the study participants 60.7% (n = 583; 51.5% female; average age 36 years; unemployed for an average of 4.8 years) suffered from affective disorders, followed by neurotic, stress and somatoform disorders (42.5%). With a mean global assessment of functioning (GAF) value of 49.4 (SD 7.7), there was on average a serious impairment. Nearly half of the subjects (48.5%) had never received psychotherapeutic, psychiatric or neurological treatment in the 6 months prior to inclusion in the project. DISCUSSION It could be shown that there is a broad spectrum of mental disorders with substantial functional impairment. The data suggest that this group is significantly undertreated and difficult to reach.

Abstract
Background Research on food addiction has increased significantly in recent years. It has been demonstrated that food addiction can lead to impairments in physiological, psychological, and social functioning in individuals. However, there is a lack of studies investigating the influence of how individuals handle social situations on food addiction and the specific mechanisms involved. Method A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 1,151 university students, with a mean age of 21.44 (SD = 4.77) years. The sample comprised 74.46% female and 25.54% male students. Participants completed the Chinese version of the modified Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0, the Social Physique Anxiety Scale, the Expressive Suppression Scale, and the Social Avoidance and Distress Scale. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 26.0 and the Process (Version 3.4) plug-in. Result The results of the study supported our hypothesis that the association between social physique anxiety and food addiction symptoms could be partially explained by expressive suppression and social avoidance and distress. This association remained significant even after adjusting for covariates such as gender, number of cigarettes smoked per day, bedtime, education, and BMI. Specifically, more severe social physique anxiety was found to be associated with frequent use of expressive suppression and social avoidance and distress, which in turn was associated with more severe food addiction symptoms. Conclusion This study explored the role of expression suppression and social avoidance and distress in the relationship between social physique anxiety and food addiction symptoms. The findings provide a theoretical basis for developing interventions for food addiction in college students. These interventions could include helping students develop a healthy perception of body image, encouraging emotional expression, and promoting active social participation to reduce food addiction symptoms.

Abstract
Background Evidence suggests that a ketogenic diet (KD) may help to alleviate psychiatric symptoms, including depression and anxiety. Positive changes have been reported such as improvements in cognition, concentration, and sleep, a reduction in hunger, and an increase in well-being, energy, confidence, and resilience. This research aims to understand the impact of a non-calorie-restricted KD on depression and aspects of psychological well-being in those with varying degrees of depressive symptoms. Though there are a few studies directly exploring the experiences of those following a KD, this will be the first study to explore the narrative from a mental health and psychological well-being viewpoint. Method A sample of nine participants who had followed a non-calorie restricted KD intervention of 50 g of carbohydrates or less per day for at least 12 weeks were recruited. Participants were split into 'healthy adults' group who had no to low depressive symptoms and 'depressive symptoms' group who had mild to moderate depressive symptoms. A reflexive thematic analysis was considered suitable for this study. Findings Five core themes and 24 subthemes were created. These were, (1) Poor health prior to program; (2) Hunger and cravings-the food and mood connection; (3) Psychological well-being improvements; (4) It becomes a lifestyle; and (5) Implementation difficulties. Participants experienced mental health improvements such as increased self-esteem, confidence, motivation, and achievement. Some experienced more control in life and a greater sense of reward. Those with depressive symptoms who initially reported low self-worth and hopelessness later reported increased self-esteem and renewed meaning and purpose in life. The findings from this study reflect the previous reports that the diet implementation can be difficult initially, but soon becomes easy to follow and turns into a lifestyle. Conclusion In the literature, there are very few qualitative studies that explore the accounts and lived experiences of those following a KD. From the participants' accounts in this study, it appears that the benefits and positive outcomes of this diet outweigh any negative side-effects experienced. This is encouraging for those who are looking for adjunctive therapies to address and improve their depressive symptoms and overall mental health.

Abstract
There is an empirical association between stress and symptoms of food addiction (FA), but it is still not clear which domains of stress are the most relevant when it comes to FA, limiting the ability of researchers and practitioners to address problematic eating-related health outcomes. In order to address this gap in the literature, we analysed how different domains of chronic stress are related to FA. We used data from a subsample of the LIFE-Adult-Study (N = 1172), a German cohort study. We conducted a linear regression analysis with stress domains (Trier Inventory for Chronic Stress, TICS) as predictors of FA (Yale Food Addiction Scale, YFAS). In the second regression analysis we included sociodemographic variables, personality, and smoking as control variables. There was a significant and positive association between Social Overload, Work Discontent, Excessive Demands from Work, and Chronic Worrying and FA. After adding control variables, only Social Overload, Excessive Demands from Work, and Chronic Worrying remained significant predictors. Connections between stress domains and FA can serve as starting points for the development of meaningful interventions that support individuals self-care strategies (Social Overload), complexity management (Excessive Demands from Work), and coping with negative emotions (Chronic Worrying).

Abstract
Objective Food Addiction (FA) and other well-known risk behavior as substance misuse tend to co-occur and may share similar risk and protective factors. The aim of this study was to assess the association between the diagnosis/severity of FA and psychosocial domains typically related to risk behavior syndrome in a large, nationally representative community sample of Generation Z underage Italian students. Method The sample consisted of 8,755 students (3,623 from middle schools, 5,132 from high schools). A short version of the Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 was administered to evaluate FA. Risk and protective factors related to demographic, personality, behavior, and family variables were examined. Stepwise multivariate logistic and linear regressions were conducted. Results The prevalence of FA was 30.8%. Female gender, social anxiety and depression symptoms, social withdrawal risk, Internet gaming disorder, social media addiction, current substance use, social challenge engagement and experienced doxing boosted the chance of FA diagnosis, whereas eating fruit and vegetables, playing competitive sports and an average sleep duration of 7-8 h per night reduced these odds. FA severity was significantly and positively associated with trait impulsiveness, social anxiety and depressive symptoms, risk of social withdrawal, recent substance use, social media, and gaming addiction, doxing suffered and risky social challenges participation. Negative associations between the severity of FA and fruit and vegetable diet habits were found. Conclusion Our findings confirm that FA is widespread among Italian adolescents. The associations between the diagnosis and severity of FA and psychosocial risk factors for health, including, addictive and deviant behaviors related to digital misuse, suggest its belonging to the risk behavior constellation. Health promotion schemes based on a multicomponent strategy of intervention should consider the inclusion of FA and its psychosocial correlates.

Abstract
Studies show a connection between anxiety and stress, but with little differentiation between different domains of stress. In this article, we utilize a multi-dimensional approach to better understand the relationship between different chronic stress domains and anxiety. This will allow researchers to identify and address those areas of stress that are most relevant with regard to anxiety. We used data from a sub sample of the LIFE-Adult-Study (n = 1085) to analyze the association between nine different areas of chronic stress (Trier Inventory for Chronic Stress, TICS) and anxiety (General Anxiety Disorder 7, GAD-7), controlling for sociodemographic variables, personality, and social support. There was a significant and positive association between Work Overload, Pressure to Perform, Social Tensions, Social Isolation, Chronic Worrying, and anxiety. After including the control variables, only Work Overload and Chronic Worrying remained significant. By focusing on Work Overload and Chronic Worrying researchers, practitioners, and policy makers can help to mitigate anxiety and related health problems in the population in an efficient way.

Abstract
Background Food addiction (FA) is a construct that has gained interest in recent years, but its relevance in the Ecuadorian population has not yet been explored. The aims of this study were to explore the differences in the psychological profile (including FA) between university students from Ecuador and to identify the underlying structure of the relationships of the FA severity level through a mediational model. Methods The sample consisted of 972 university students, women and men (mean age: 20.1 years old, SD = 2.6), recruited from four Ecuadorian regions. The assessment tools included a unidimensional scale of FA, eating-related measures, emotion regulation state, impulsivity, and psychopathology state. Path analysis modeled the direct and indirect effects explaining the FA severity level. Results The results indicated that higher psychopathological levels were associated with FA. Similarly, no differences in FA were observed between the Ecuadorian regions. The path analysis suggested that older age, female sex, and higher difficulties in emotional regulation, impulsivity, negative mood, and anxiety trigger disordered eating; subsequently, more impaired eating behavior impacted the FA level. Conclusion FA is a complex clinical entity that includes multiple components related to eating disorders (EDs) and other mental health problems. The results of this study provide empirical knowledge for designing evidence-based prevention and treatment strategies.
