Abstract
This study explores the inhibitory effects of a chitosan/nano-TiO₂/Daisy Essential Oil (CSTD) composite film on spoilage microorganisms affecting Actinidia arguta. Owing to its high nutritional value and water content, Actinidia arguta is highly susceptible to microbial spoilage, leading to a significantly shortened shelf life. Traditional chemical preservation methods are ineffective against microbial spoilage and raise concerns about safety and environmental sustainability, highlighting the demand for natural, effective alternatives. Chitosan, a natural polysaccharide, shows promise due to its biocompatibility and biodegradability. However, its mechanical, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties require enhancement. To address these limitations, this study incorporates nano-TiO₂ and Daisy Essential Oil into chitosan to develop a composite film. Key spoilage microorganisms of Actinidia arguta were isolated and identified, with Rhizopus stolonifera reported for the first time as one of the spoilage organisms. The composite film demonstrated significant inhibitory effects against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, Aspergillus niger, Neopestalotiopsis clavispora, Aspergillus piperis, and Rhizopus stolonifera. Resistance induction experiments further revealed that CSTD effectively delayed oxidative stress and enzymatic degradation linked to fruit spoilage, significantly extending the shelf life of Actinidia arguta. These findings provide theoretical support for developing effective preservation techniques for Actinidia arguta.

Abstract
In this work, chitosan (Cs) was blended with different concentrations of Origanum majorana extract (OmE) that extracted using ethyl acetate and used for the formation of food packaging films. Based on the utilized volumes of OmE (2.5, 5, and 7.5 mL) that were mixed with 27.5, 25, and 22.5 mL of Cs, these different film samples (2.5 OmE loaded Cs film, 5 OmE loaded Cs film and 7.5 OmE loaded Cs film) were obtained and compared with the film of pure Cs. The extraction yields of OmE were found to be 13 g and 10.4 g % when using ethyl acetate (OmE) and methanol (OmME), respectively, with total phenolic content measured at 889.30 μg GAE/g for the ethyl acetate extract and 810.21 μg GAE/g for the methanol extract, indicating a substantial amount of bioactive compounds available for formulation. Antimicrobial activity was assessed against various foodborne pathogens, with the 7.5 OmE loaded Cs film demonstrating the highest efficacy, achieving inhibition zones of 27 mm against E. coli and 25 mm against S. aureus. This research underscores the potential of Cs-based films loaded with O. majorana extract as a viable solution for active food packaging, addressing environmental concerns and food safety.

Abstract
Uncontrolled bleeding and microbial infections pose significant hurdles in wound healing, and the use of specialized functional dressings is pivotal in overcoming these obstacles. Among the various wound dressings currently under investigation, those based on chitosan and its derivatives have garnered significant attention due to their superior biocompatibility, antimicrobial properties, hemostatic capabilities, and healing promoting ability. In this comprehensive review, we initially delve into the hemostatic capabilities of chitosan, elucidating its interactions with blood cells and plasma proteins. We also dissect the intricate antimicrobial mechanisms of chitosan, which operate through both intracellular and extracellular pathways. The centerpiece of this review is the systematic classification of dressings based on chitosan and its derivatives, across various forms, such as hydrogels, sponges, membranes, fibers, and powders. This is followed by an exhaustive analysis of their hemostatic and antibacterial efficacy in wound healing, providing a robust foundation for further research and the advancement of clinical applications in the field.

Abstract
This review examines strategies to enhance the mechanical properties of chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) electrospun nanofibers, recognized for their biomedical and industrial applications. It begins by outlining the fundamental properties of chitosan and PVA, highlighting their compatibility and mechanical characteristics. The electrospinning process is discussed, focusing on how various parameters and post-treatment methods influence fiber formation and performance. Key strategies for improvement are analyzed, including material modifications through blending and structural modifications like fiber orientation and multilayer constructions, and surface modifications such as coating and functionalization. The review also covers advanced characterization methods to evaluate mechanical properties and provides a comparative analysis of different enhancement approaches. Applications in biomedical and industrial contexts are explored, showcasing the versatility and innovation potential of these nanofibers. Finally, current challenges are addressed, and future research directions are proposed to overcome these obstacles and further enhance the mechanical properties of chitosan/PVA electrospun nanofibers, guiding their development for practical applications.

Abstract
Chitosan, a biopolymer derived from the deacetylation of chitin found in crustacean shells and certain fungi, has attracted considerable attention for its promising health benefits, particularly in gut microbiota maintenance and immune system modulation. This review critically examines chitosan's multifaceted role in supporting gut health and enhancing immunity, beginning with a comprehensive overview of its sources, chemical structure, and its dual function as a dietary supplement and biomaterial. Chitosan's prebiotic effects are highlighted, with a focus on its ability to selectively stimulate beneficial gut bacteria, such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus, while enhancing gut barrier integrity and inhibiting the growth of pathogenic microorganisms. The review delves deeply into chitosan's immunomodulatory mechanisms, including its impact on antigen-presenting cells, cytokine profiles, and systemic immune responses. A detailed comparative analysis assesses chitosan's efficacy relative to other prebiotics and immunomodulatory agents, examining challenges related to bioavailability and metabolic activity. Beyond its role in gut health, this review explores chitosan's potential as a dual-action agent that not only supports gut microbiota but also fortifies immune resilience. It introduces emerging research on novel chitosan derivatives, such as chitooligosaccharides, and evaluates their enhanced bioactivity for functional food applications. Special attention is given to sustainability, with an exploration of alternative, plant-based sources of chitosan and their implications for both health and environmental stewardship. Also, the review identifies new research avenues, such as the growing interest in chitosan's role in the gut-brain axis and its potential mental health benefits through microbial interactions. By addressing these innovative areas, the review aims to shift the focus from basic health effects to chitosan's broader impact on public health. Abstract
Chitosan is an ideal coating film for food preservation, but the performance of a single chitosan coating film is not good. Herein, the liposome was prepared by embedding copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) and thyme essential oil (TEO) in the hydrophilic and hydrophobic double-domain structure formed by phospholipids, and combining with chitosan to obtain a chitosan-based coating film for litchi preservation. The liposome was well-dispersed and stable with an average particle size of about 190 nm. The liposome showed excellent controllable release properties, and the cumulative release rate of TEO was 65.17 % and that of CuNPs was 15.17 % after 7 days. Furthermore, the oxygen and water vapor barrier properties of the coating film were greatly improved. Importantly, the film possessed effective antioxidant, antibacterial activity and excellent safety, which presents a better fresh-keeping effect on litchi. This study provides insights into the design and manufacture of food packaging for controllable and long-lasting preservation.

Abstract
The spread of multidrug-resistant microbes has made it necessary and urgent to develop new strategies to deal with the infections they cause. Some of these are based on nanotechnology, which has revolutionized many fields in medicine. Evaluating the safety and efficacy of these new antimicrobial strategies requires testing in animal models before being tested in clinical trials. In this context, Galleria mellonella could represent a valid alternative to traditional mammalian and non-mammalian animal models, due to its low cost, ease of handling, and valuable biological properties to investigate host-pathogen interactions. The purpose of this review is to provide an updated overview of the literature concerning the use of G. mellonella larvae as an animal model to evaluate safety and efficacy of nanoparticles and nanomaterials, particularly, of those that are used or are under investigation to combat microbial pathogens.

Abstract
Wide commercial applications of chitosan in food preservation and green packaging fields inevitably lead to the universal existence in food, as well as the food waste (FW) processing system. However, whether and how the chitosan, a class of biomacromolecule substances, lead to dysfunction of anaerobic digestion (AD) process of FW remains less understood. Herein, chitosan exhibited an inhibition-and-relief effect with the AD process proceeding, and 80 mg/g-FW of chitosan decreased the net methane yield of FW by 24.7 %. The dynamic effect was ascribed to the varied fates of chitosan and the coupling biotic/abiotic influencing on multi-steps. Chitosan enhanced substrate flocs agglomeration, restraining the release of organics to liquid phase and reducing the binding affinity to enzymes. Among the various microorganisms involved in different steps, chitosan severely inhibited aceticlastic and hydrogenotrophic methanogen at the levels of microbial abundance, activity and function. Genome-centric metagenomics analyses revealed that transient chitosan decreased the coenzyme-based synergism of various microbial taxa involved in acetic acid generation/consumption metabolisms, including syntrophic propionate-oxidizing bacteria, syntrophic butyrate-oxidizing bacteria and methanogen. With the elimination of chitosan, these inhibitions were relieved, and the accumulated acetic acid and the more favorable thermodynamic conditions finally attributed to the recovery of AD performance.

Abstract
In the ever-evolving world of materials science, modifying natural polymers has garnered significant attention across diverse industries, driven by their inherent availability and cost-effectiveness. Among these, chitosan, a pseudo-natural cationic polymer, has emerged as a versatile player, finding applications in medical, pharmaceutical, filtration, and textile sectors, owing to its exceptional biodegradability, non-allergenicity, antimicrobial properties, and eco-friendly nature. However, the limitations of chitosan, such as low surface area, poor solubility at neutral to alkaline pH, and inadequate thermal-mechanical properties, have prompted researchers to explore innovative modification strategies, including graft copolymerization, quaternization, and cross-linking. This review delves into the remarkable potential of a specific chitosan derivative, N-[(2-hydroxy-3-trimethylammonium) propyl] chitosan salts (N-HTCS), a quaternized form of chitosan. This review uniquely examines the properties and multifaceted applications of N-HTCS, spanning biomedical, textile, food packaging, and environmental domains. The outstanding features of N-HTCS, including antioxidant, anticancer, and antimicrobial bioactivity, as well as biocompatibility, biodegradability, hemostatic, piezoelectric, superparamagnetic, water solubility, and permeation-enhancing effects, offer novel solutions to the limitations of unmodified chitosan. Notably, while previous reviews have addressed the significance of chitosan, this work presents a groundbreaking focus on the N-HTCS derivative, providing a fresh perspective and paving the way for the design and engineering of cutting-edge N-HTCS-based devices and applications. The comprehensive coverage of this review aims to inspire researchers and industry professionals to explore the untapped potential of this remarkable chitosan derivative, unlocking new frontiers in material science and technology.

Abstract
Food contact materials should not release their constituent substances into food at levels harmful to human health nor change the food composition, taste, or odor unacceptably. The historical evolution of food packaging shows that the use of plastics has increased dramatically, because of its convenience, lightweight, and cost effectiveness, but carries a significant environmental impact. Influenced by trends such as growing awareness of the environmental footprint and stricter safety requirements, conventional packaging is now progressively evolving toward new alternatives. All stakeholders in the agrifood system are involved in the journey to transform food packaging to more sustainable alternatives, while maintaining the important functionalities of suitable food packaging. The current most promising food packaging alternatives are presented in this review with their benefits, limitations, and associated potential safety hazards, with a focus on chemical hazards. Although some potential hazards are common to conventional packaging, others are specific to the new alternatives. Identification of potential chemical hazards associated with these new packaging alternatives is important to anticipate any risks posed to consumer safety. With much diversity in packaging types and rules aimed at ensuring safety drastically varying between jurisdictions, it is not always easy to determine the best way to assess the safety of food packaging. International guidance on principles for safe food packaging could help drive global harmonization and would play a crucial role in ensuring a consistent and science-based framework for the safety and compliance of new and emerging food packaging.

Abstract
The development of novel antibacterial agents is urgently needed to tackle bacterial infection, the major global issue menacing human health. Among them, polymeric quaternary phosphonium salts are worth noticing owing to their strong antibacterial activities and other merits including low bacterial drug resistance. Herein, pullulan modified with quaternary phosphonium salts (PQP) was synthesized using esterification reactions of pullulan and (5-carboxypentyl)triphenylphosphonium bromide (CPTPPB) mediated by N,N'‑carbonyldiimidazole (CDI), and was evaluated as novel antibacterial agents for treating wound infection for the first time. The chemical structures, chemical bonding, elemental compositions, crystalline properties and thermostability of PQP were systematically investigated. PQP exhibited in vitro antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli), which were unveiled by the spread plate method and possibly resulted from the damage of bacterial cell walls/membranes mediated by electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions according to preliminary mechanism studies. Weak cytotoxicity and excellent hemocompatibility of PQP at the effective bactericidal concentration were observed. Moreover, in the infected wound model of mice, PQP was capable of disinfecting the wound and accelerating the healing. We opine PQP in this work is promising for antibacterial applications and will inspire the synthesis of novel antibacterial agents derived from natural polymers.

Abstract
In this research, a novel active food packaging material was developed by blending starch, chitosan, and plant-based mucilage with zinc oxide nanoparticles. The polymeric nanocomposite film, created by incorporating zinc oxide nanoparticles into the mixture using a straightforward approach, was analyzed for its structural and functional attributes using FTIR, XRD, SEM, and TGA/DSC. These analyses revealed a robust interaction between the polymers' functional groups and the nanoparticles, forming a stable film. The film's mechanical properties, including tensile strength and Young's modulus, were high. It also showed reduced wettability and water solubility, enhancing water resistance. The biodegradability rate was 100 %. Antibacterial tests against Bacillus sp. and Pseudomonas sp. showed significant inhibition zones of 26 mm and 30 mm, respectively, demonstrating strong antibacterial effectiveness. The film's non-target toxicity was assessed through phytotoxicity experiments on Vigna angularis and soil nutrient evaluations, with no negative impact on plant growth or soil health observed. These results indicate that this nanocomposite is a safe, biocompatible option for food packaging.

Abstract
Strawberry fruits are popular all over the world due to their rich organoleptic properties and enormous health benefits. However, it is highly susceptible to postharvest spoilage due to various factors, including moisture loss, nutrient oxidation, and microbial spoilage. Recently, various researchers have studied the effect of chitosan-based flexible films and surface coatings on the shelf life of strawberries. Despite various reviews providing general information on the effects of chitosan-based films and coatings on various food products, no review has focused solely on their effects on postharvest preservation and the shelf life of strawberries. The purpose of this review is to summarize the current research on chitosan-based formulations for extending the shelf life of strawberries. Chitosan, a cationic carbohydrate polymer, possesses excellent properties such as film formation, mechanical strength, non-toxicity, biodegradability, edibility, UV-blocking ability, antioxidant activity, and antibacterial functionality, justifying its potential as packaging/coating material for fresh agricultural products, including strawberries. This review covers the various factors responsible for strawberry spoilage and the properties of chitosan that help counteract these factors. Additionally, the advantages of chitosan-based preservation technology compared to existing strawberry preservation methods were explained, efficiency was evaluated, and future research directions were suggested.

Abstract
Increased mass manufacturing and the pervasive use of plastics in many facets of daily life have had detrimental effects on the environment. As a result, these worries heighten the possibility of climate change due to the carbon dioxide emissions from burning conventional, non-biodegradable polymers. Accordingly, biodegradable gelatin and chitosan polymers are being created as a sustainable substitute for non-biodegradable polymeric materials in various applications. Chitosan is the only naturally occurring cationic alkaline polysaccharide, a well-known edible polymer derived from chitin. The biological activities of chitosan, such as its antioxidant, anticancer, and antimicrobial qualities, have recently piqued the interest of researchers. Similarly, gelatin is a naturally occurring polymer derived from the hydrolytic breakdown of collagen protein and offers various medicinal advantages owing to its unique amino acid composition. In this review, we present an overview of recent studies focusing on applying chitosan and gelatin polymers in various fields. These include using gelatin and chitosan as food packaging, antioxidants and antimicrobial properties, properties encapsulating biologically active substances, tissue engineering, microencapsulation technology, water treatment, and drug delivery. This review emphasizes the significance of investigating sustainable options for non-biodegradable plastics. It showcases the diverse uses of gelatin and chitosan polymers in tackling environmental issues and driving progress across different industries.

Abstract
This work aimed to investigate the antibacterial ability and potential mechanism of chitosan grafted gentisate acid derivatives (CS-g-GA) against Pseudomonas fluorescens. The results showed that CS-g-GA had a significant suppressive impact on the growth of Pseudomonas fluorescens, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were 0.64 mg/mL and 1.28 mg/mL, respectively. Results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and alkaline phosphatase (AKPase) confirmed that CS-g-GA destroyed the cell structure thereby causing the leakage of intracellular components. In addition, 1 × MIC of CS-g-GA could significantly inhibit the formation of biofilms, and 74.78 % mature biofilm and 86.21 % extracellular polysaccharide of Pseudomonas fluorescens were eradicated by CS-g-GA at 2 × MIC. The results on the respiratory energy metabolism system and antioxidant system demonstrated that CS-g-GA caused respiratory disturbance and energy limitation by influencing the key enzyme activities. It could also bind to DNA and affect genetic metabolism. From this, it could be seen that CS-g-GA had the potential to control foodborne contamination of Pseudomonas fluorescens by attacking multiple targets.

Abstract
The global concern about the use of disposable plastics has fed the research on sustainable packaging for food products. Among the virtuous materials, chitosan emerges as a valid alternative to conventional polyethylene films because of its abundance in nature. In this work, a novel film for food wrapping was developed by exploiting shellfish waste according to a vision of circular economy. Compared to previous studies, here, novel ingredients, such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), fibroin, and essential oils, were used in a synergistic combination to functionally postpone cheese deterioration. The fermentative procedure applied for the obtainment of chitin contributes to filling the existing gap in the literature, since the majority of studies are based on the chemical pathways that dramatically impact the environment. After pretreatment, the shrimp shell waste (SSW) was fermented through two bacterial strains, namely Lactobacillus plantarum and Bacillus subtilis. A deacetylation step in an alkaline environment transformed chitin into chitosan, yielding 78.88 g/kg SWW. Four different film formulations were prepared, all containing chitosan with other ingredients added in order of decreasing complexity from the A to D groups. The novel films were tested with regard to their physico-mechanical and antioxidant properties, including the tensile strength (12.10-23.25 MPa), the elongation at break (27.91-46.12%), the hardness (52-71 Shore A), the film thickness (308-309 μm), and the radical scavenging activity (16.11-76.56%). The performance as a cling film was tested on two groups of cheese samples: the control (CTR), wrapped in conventional polyethylene (PE) film; treated (TRT), wrapped in the chitofilm formulation deemed best for its mechanical properties. The volatiles entrapped into the headspace were investigated by means of the SPME-GC technique. The results varied across soft, Camembert, and semi-hard cheeses, indicating a growing abundance of volatiles during the conservation of cheese. The bacterial growth trends for mesophilic, enterobacteriaceae, and lactic acid bacteria were expressed as the mean colony forming units (CFU)/mL for each type of cheese at different sampling times (day 2, day 8, and day 22): the highest load was quantified as 8.2 × 106 CFU/mL at day 22 in the CTR Camembert cheese. The TRT samples generally exhibited inhibitory activity comparable to or lower than that observed in the CTR samples. The sensory analysis revealed distinctions in cheese taste between the TRT and CTR groups.

Abstract
Chitosan is a promising adsorbent for removing a wide range of pollutants from wastewater. However, its practical application is hindered by instability in acidic environments, which significantly impairs its adsorption capacity and limits its utilization in water purification. While cross-linking can enhance the acid stability of chitosan, current solvent-based methods are often costly and environmentally unfriendly. In this study, a solvent-free mechanochemical process was developed using high-energy ball milling to cross-link chitosan with various polyanionic linkers, including dextran sulfate (DS), poly[4-styrenesulfonic acid-co-maleic acid] (PSSM), and tripolyphosphate (TPP). The mechanochemically cross-linked (MCCL) chitosan products exhibited superior adsorption capacity and stability in acidic solutions compared to pristine chitosan. Chitosan cross-linked with DS (Cht-DS) showed the highest Reactive Red 2 (RR2) adsorption capacity, reaching 1559 mg·g-1 at pH 3, followed by Cht-PSSM (1352 mg·g-1) and Cht-TPP (1074 mg·g-1). The stability of MCCL chitosan was visually confirmed by the negligible mass loss of Cht-DS and Cht-PSSM tablets in pH 3 solution, unlike the complete dissolution of the pristine chitosan tablet. The MCCL significantly increased the microhardness of chitosan, with the order Cht-DS > Cht-PSSM > Cht-TPP, consistent with the RR2 adsorption capacity. When tested on simulated rinsing wastewater from chromium electroplating, Cht-DS effectively removed Cr(VI) (98.75% removal) and three per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (87.40-95.87% removal), following pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics. This study demonstrates the potential of the cost-effective and scalable MCCL approach to produce chitosan-based adsorbents with enhanced stability, mechanical strength, and adsorption performance for treating highly acidic industrial wastewater containing a mixture of toxic pollutants.

Abstract
This study describes the synthesis of Chitosan - corn protein (CSZ-TG) composites using TG enzyme (TG) as a cross-linking agent and the preparation of chitosan-based composite membrane material (CSZEO-TG) by blending citrus essential oil (EO) with the synthesized CSZ-TG. The prepared composite membrane material was used for fresh strawberry preservation and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-spectral diffraction, tensile properties, and water vapor and CO2 permeability. Scanning electron microscopy results showed a smooth surface of the composite membrane material after the addition of TG enzyme, while Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy results showed a structural change of the composite membrane material after the addition of corn protein (Z). The tensile results showed an increase in the tensile strength of the composite membrane material after the addition of TG enzyme, while the flexibility of the composite membrane material was enhanced after the addition of EO. Compared with the pure chitosan membrane (CS), the water vapor and CO2 barrier properties of the composite membrane material after the addition of Z, TG, and EO did not change much, and they all showed better water vapor barrier properties. The results of the antioxidant analysis of the solution of the CSZEO-TG composite membrane material showed that the composite membrane material had efficient antioxidant properties. The effects of the composite film material on the storage period and quality of strawberries were evaluated by the indicators of weight loss, hardness, decay rate, soluble solids, titratable acid content, MDA content, and the content of four enzymes, SOD, POD, PPO and CAT. Comprehensive freshness data analysis showed that CSZEO-TG had the best freshness preservation performance and effectively extended the shelf life of strawberries.

Abstract
Edible mushrooms are prone to deteriorate during storage. A Single chitosan film or coating has limitations in preservation. Therefore, this article focused on the improvement of modified chitosan-based films and coatings on properties related to storage quality of edible mushrooms (e.g.: safety, barrier, mechanical, antioxidant and antibacterial properties). Besides, the application of chitosan-based materials in the preservation of mushrooms was also discussed. The modified chitosan film and coating can slow down the respiration of mushrooms, inhibit the growth of microorganisms, protect antioxidant compositions, and regulate the activity of related enzymes, thus improving the quality and prolonging the shelf life of mushrooms. Meanwhile, the added ingredients improve the water and gas barrier properties of chitosan through volume and group occupation, and reduce the light transmittance of chitosan through light transmission, scattering and absorption. Essential oils and polyphenolic compounds had a better enhancement of antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of chitosan.

Abstract
This paper verified the possibility of applying chitosan and/or ferulic acid or polycaprolactone (PCL)-based coatings to polydimethylsiloxane/neodymium-iron-boron (PDMS/NdFeB) composites using the spin-coating method. The surface modification of magnetic composites by biofunctional layers allows for the preparation of materials for biomedical applications. Biofunctional layered magnetic composites were obtained in three steps. The spin-coating method with various parameters (time and spin speed) was used to apply different substances to the surface of the composites. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) were used to analyze the thickness and surface topography. The contact angle of the obtained surfaces was tested. Increasing spin speed and increasing process time for the same speed resulted in decreasing the composite's thickness. The linear and surface roughness for the prepared coatings were approximately 0.2 μm and 0.01 μm, respectively, which are desirable values in the context of biocompatibility. The contact angle test results showed that both the addition of chitosan and PCL to PDMS have reduced the contact angle θ from 105° for non-coated composite to θ~59-88° depending on the coating. The performed modifications gave promising results mainly due to making the surface hydrophilic, which is a desirable feature of projected biomaterials.

Abstract
Considerable potential exists for the development of natural polymer hydrogels that possess notable antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, along with excellent biocompatibility and mechanical attributes, to expedite the healing of skin wounds. Recent endeavors have focused on formulating an optimal hydrogel dressing for wound hemostasis and repair. In this pursuit, we have crafted a composite hydrogel using carboxymethyl chitosan and alginic acid, cross-linked with EDC/NHS, and enriched with extracts from Acanthopanax senticosus and Osmundastrum cinnamomeum. This synthesized hydrogel showcases commendable features, including significant swelling capacity (135 ± 3.6%), proficient water retention (94.421 ± 0.154%), and effective water vapor permeability (5845.011 ± 467.799 g/m2/d). Moreover, our drug-loaded hydrogels (CMCS/SA/AS/OC) have demonstrated remarkable efficacy in accelerating wound healing in both in vivo and in vitro models. On the 7th day, the wound healing rate reached 94.905% ± 0.498%, and by the 14th day, the wound was nearly fully healed (98.08% ± 0.323%) with the emergence of hair coverage. Furthermore, these hydrogels exhibited remarkable hemostatic properties, the platelet activity was 89.37% ± 1.29% and the platelet adhesion rate was 66.36% ± 1.42%. In order to elucidate the coagulation mechanism of the Acanthopanax senticosus and Osmundastrum cinnamomeum extracts, a network pharmacology approach was carried out. 41 active compounds and 107 potential therapeutic targets associated with these extracts were identified, revealing a total of 132 coagulation pathways. Platelet activation and complement and coagulation cascades pathways showed the highest levels of enrichment by KEGG analysis, serving as potential mechanisms through which the active components in AS/OC may facilitate coagulation by targeting relevant factors. In summary, our study has successfully developed an innovative drug-loaded hydrogel that not only enhances wound hemostasis and healing but also provides insights into the underlying mechanisms through network pharmacology. This work establishes a robust theoretical foundation for the medical application of our hydrogel.

Abstract
Chitosan is considered the second most ubiquitous polysaccharide next to cellulose. It has gained prominence in various industries including biomedicine, textile, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and notably, the food industry over the last few decades. The polymer's continual attention within the food industry can be attributed to the increasing popularity of greener means of packaging and demand for foods incorporated with natural alternatives instead of synthetic additives. Its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and film-forming abilities reinforced by the polymer's biocompatible, biodegradable, and nontoxic nature have fostered its usage in food packaging and preservation. Microbial activity and lipid oxidation significantly influence the shelf-life of meat, resulting in unfavorable changes in nutritional and sensory properties during storage. In this review, the scientific studies published in recent years regarding potential applications of chitosan in meat products; and their effects on shelf-life extension and sensory properties are discussed. The utilization of chitosan in the form of films, coatings, and additives in meat products has supported the extension of shelf-life while inducing a positive impact on their organoleptic properties. The nature of chitosan and its compatibility with various materials make it an ideal biopolymer to be used in novel arenas of food technology.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to create CS-POP composite films by blending Pleurotus ostreatus stalk polysaccharides (POP) and chitosan (CS). The effects of adding different concentrations (0 %, 0.25 %, 0.5 %, 0.75 %, and 1 %) of POP on the mechanical, barrier, and optical properties of the CS films were investigated. When the POP content is at 0.5 %, the tensile strength of the composite film reaches its maximum value at 13.691 MPa, showing a significant improvement compared to the tensile strength of the pure CS film. The structure of the CS and CS-POP composite films was characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, XRD, TGA and SEM. The results indicate that due to the interaction between the two types of CS and POP, the formation of Schiff base, and the intermolecular hydrogen bonds between CS and POP, the addition of POP to CS films can result in a smoother and more stable crystalline structure in the composite film. The CS-POP composite films exhibited enhanced antioxidant and antibacterial activity compared to the CS films alone, with the highest DPPH scavenging activity of 72.43 %. The composite films also showed significant inhibitory effects on the growth of E. coli.

Abstract
The postharvest preservation of Ngoc Linh ginseng (NL ginseng) is essential to retain its quality and sensory values for prolonged storage. In this study, the efficacy of NL ginseng preservation by coating chitosan derivatives in combination with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solutions was investigated under refrigeration conditions (~3 °C; ~40% RH) for 56 days. The effect of the chitosan-based solutions, including N,O-carboxymethyl chitosan (NOCC), chitosan oligomer saccharide (COS), or chitosan (CS), and the blend solutions (NOCC-PVA or COS-PVA) on the coated NL ginsengs was observed during storage. The pH values, viscosity, and film-forming capability of the coating solutions were determined, while the visual appearance, morphology, and mechanical properties of the films formed on glass substrates as a ginseng model for coating were also observed. The appearance, skin lightness, weight loss, sensory evaluation, total saponin content (TSC), total polyphenol content (TPC), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of the coated NL ginsengs were evaluated. The findings showed that the observed values of the coated NL ginsengs were better than those of the non-coated samples, with the exception of the COS-coated samples, which had completely negative results. Furthermore, the NOCC-PVA solution exhibited a better preservation effect compared with the COS-PVA one based on the observed indices, except for TPC and TAC, which were not impacted by the coating. Notably, the optimal preservation time was determined to be 35 days. This study presents promising preservation technology using the coating solution of NOCC-PVA, harnessing the synergistic effect of pH 7.4 and the form-firming capacity, to maintain the shelf life, medicinal content, and sensory attributes of NL ginseng.

Abstract
During the last decades, the ever-increasing incidence of various diseases, like cancer, has led to a high rate of death worldwide. On the other hand, conventional modalities (such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy) have not indicated enough efficiency in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Thus, potential novel approaches should be taken into consideration to pave the way for the suppression of diseases. Among novel approaches, biomaterials, like chitosan nanoparticles (CS NPs, N-acetyl-glucosamine and D-glucosamine), have been approved by the FDA for some efficient pharmaceutical applications. These NPs owing to their physicochemical properties, modification with different molecules, biocompatibility, serum stability, less immune response, suitable pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, etc. have received deep attention among researchers and clinicians. More importantly, the impact of CS polysaccharide in the synthesis, preparation, and delivery of metallic NPs (like gold, silver, and magnetic NPs), and combination of CS with these metallic NPs can further facilitate the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Metallic NPs possess some features, like converting NIR photon energy into thermal energy and anti-microorganism capability, and can be a potential candidate for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in combination with CS NPs. These combined NPs would be efficient pharmaceuticals in the future.

Abstract
Fresh food is rich in nutrients but is usually seasonal, perishable, and challenging to store without degradation of quality. The inherent limitations of various preservation technologies can result in losses in all stages of the supply chain. As consumers of fresh foods have become more health-conscious, new technologies for intelligent, energy-efficient, and nondestructive preservation and processing have emerged as a research priority in recent years. This review aims to summarize the quality change characteristics of postharvest fruits, vegetables, meats, and aquatic products. It critically analyzes research progress and applications of various emerging technologies, which include: the application of high-voltage electric field, magnetic field, electromagnetic field, plasma, electrolytic water, nanotechnology, modified atmosphere packaging, and composite bio-coated film preservation technologies. An evaluation is presented of the benefits and drawbacks of these technologies, as well as future development trends. Moreover, this review provides guidance for design of the food supply chain to take advantage of various technologies used to process food, reduce losses and waste of fresh food, and this improve the overall resilience of the supply chain.

Abstract
As promising biomaterials, hydrogels are widely used in the medical engineering field, especially in wound repairing. Compared with traditional wound dressings, such as gauze and bandage, hydrogel could absorb and retain more water without dissolving or losing its three-dimensional structure, thus avoiding secondary injury and promoting wound healing. Chitosan and its derivatives have become hot research topics for hydrogel wound dressing production due to their unique molecular structure and diverse biological activities. In this review, the mechanism of wound healing was introduced systematically. The mechanism of action of chitosan in the first three stages of wound repair (hemostasis, antimicrobial properties and progranulation), the effect of chitosan deacetylation and the molecular weight on its performance are analyzed. Additionally, the recent progress in intelligent and drug-loaded chitosan-based hydrogels and the features and advantages of chitosan were discussed. Finally, the challenges and prospects for the future development of chitosan-based hydrogels were discussed.

Abstract
The perishability nature of harvested fruits and vegetables, along with the effect of environmental factors, storage conditions, and transportation, reduce the products' quality and shelf-life. Considerable efforts have been allocated to alternate conventional coatings based on new edible biopolymers for packaging. Chitosan is an attractive alternative to synthetic plastic polymers due to its biodegradability, antimicrobial activity, and film-forming properties. However, its conservative properties can be improved by adding active compounds, limiting microbial agents' growth and biochemical and physical damages, and enhancing the stored products' quality, shelf-life, and consumer acceptability. Most of the research on chitosan-based coatings focuses on antimicrobial or antioxidant properties. Along with the advancement of polymer science and nanotechnology, novel chitosan blends with multiple functionalities are required and should be fabricated using numerous strategies, especially for application during storage. This review discusses recent developments in using chitosan as a matrix to fabricate bioactive edible coatings and their positive impacts on increasing the quality and shelf-life of fruits and vegetables.

Abstract
Chitosan nanoparticles (CNPs) are known to have great utility in many fields (pharmaceutical, agricultural, food industry, wastewater treatment, etc.). In this study we aimed to synthesize sub-100 nm CNPs as a precursor of new biopolymer-based virus surrogates for water applications. We present a simple yet efficient synthesis procedure for obtaining high yield, monodisperse CNPs with size 68-77 nm. The CNPs were synthesized by ionic gelation using low molecular weight chitosan (deacetylation 75-85%) and tripolyphosphate as crosslinker, under rigorous homogenization to decrease size and increase uniformity, and purified by passing through 0.1 μm polyethersulfone syringe filters. The CNPs were characterized using dynamic light scattering, tunable resistive pulse sensing, and scanning electron microscopy. We demonstrate reproducibility of this method at two separate facilities. The effects of pH, ionic strength and three different purification methods on the size and polydispersity of CNP formation were examined. Larger CNPs (95-219) were produced under ionic strength and pH controls, and when purified using ultracentrifugation or size exclusion chromatography. Smaller CNPs (68-77 nm) were formulated using homogenization and filtration, and could readily interact with negatively charge proteins and DNA, making them an ideal precursor for the development of DNA-labelled, protein-coated virus surrogates for environmental water applications.

Abstract
A recent focus on the development of biobased polymer packaging films has come about in response to the environmental hazards caused by petroleum-based, nonbiodegradable packaging materials. Among biopolymers, chitosan is one of the most popular due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, antibacterial properties, and ease of use. Due to its ability to inhibit gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, yeast, and foodborne filamentous fungi, chitosan is a suitable biopolymer for developing food packaging. However, more than the chitosan is required for active packaging. In this review, we summarize chitosan composites which show active packaging and improves food storage condition and extends its shelf life. Active compounds such as essential oils and phenolic compounds with chitosan are reviewed. Moreover, composites with polysaccharides and various nanoparticles are also summarized. This review provides valuable information for selecting a composite that enhances shelf life and other functional qualities when embedding chitosan. Furthermore, this report will provide directions for the development of novel biodegradable food packaging materials.

Abstract
Chitosan was produced from Hermetia illucens pupal exuviae by heterogeneous and homogeneous deacetylation. Tomato fruits (Solanum lycopersicum), that are one of the most grown and consumed food throughout the world, were coated with 0.5 and 1% chitosan, applied by dipping or spraying, and stored at room temperature or 4 °C, for a storage period of 30 days. Statistical analysis give different results depending on the analysed parameters: heterogeneous chitosan, indeed, had a better effect than the homogenous one in maintaining more stable physico-chemical parameters, while the homogenous chitosan improved the total phenols, flavonoids and antioxidant activity. Chitosan coatings applied by spraying were more effective in all the analyses. Chitosan derived from H. illucens always performed similarly to the commercial chitosan. However, a general better performance of insect-derived chitosan on the concentration of phenolics and flavonoids, and the antioxidant activity was observed as compared to the commercial one. Chitosan coating has already been successfully used for preservation of fresh fruits, as alternative to synthetic polymers, but this is the first investigation of chitosan produced from an insect for this application. These preliminary results are encouraging regarding the validation of the insect H. illucens as a source of chitosan.

Abstract
Chitosan (CS) films were developed incorporating peptide HX-12C. The films were studied to determine their microstructures, physical properties, release properties of peptide HX-12C and functional properties. The results indicated that there may be hydrogen bonding interactions between CS and peptide HX-12C, thereby creating a homogeneous internal microstructure and lower crystallinity (10.8-12.8 %). Compared with CS film, CS-HX-12C films displayed lower light transmission, MC (20.8-19.9 %), WVP (8.82-8.59 × 10-11·g·m-1·s-1·Pa-1), OTR (0.015-0.037 cc/(m2.day)) and higher WS (15.7-32.4 %) values. Moreover, controlled-release experiments showed that pH, ionic strength and temperature could all significantly affect the release of peptide HX-12C from the films. Finally, the increase of pH value and TVC and lipid oxidation of fresh pork were delayed due to the treatment with CS-2%HX-12C film. However, incorporating peptide HX-12C into CS films did not improve the mechanical properties of the films and their effects against protein oxidation. Our results suggest that the CS-based antimicrobial packaging films integrated with peptide HX-12C exhibit the potential for fresh pork preservation.

Abstract
In the era of growing plastic consumption, food waste by consumers and overproduction caused by economic reasons, the global goal is to decrease these phenomena. Biocomposite films investigated in the past years are creating a promising future toward ecological, intelligent and active packaging. Due to their unique properties, they can be used in many areas of our life and reduce the constantly increasing pollution of our planet. The aim of our study was to obtain innovative and flexible biopolymer films based on sodium alginate and chitosan, as well as to develop methods for generating nanocapsules with turmeric extract in them. Bionanocomposites were analyzed using UV-VIS, FTIR, photoluminescence spectroscopy and SEM microscopy, while contact angles, surface free energy, particle size (DLS) and zeta potential were determined. The mechanical and colorimetric properties of the produced films were investigated, and the water content, solubility and water absorption were determined. Microbiological tests were carried out to analyze the influence of the produced films on the development of microorganisms. The results of the performed analyses allowed us to confirm the presence of curcumin nano- and microcapsules in the alginate-chitosan composite. Moreover, studies have shown that the structure of polysaccharides does not change during capsule manufacturing. The film with the highest concentration of the capsules showed better parameters in tests of solubility, water content, degree of swelling and mechanical properties. The obtained properties of the developed films allow them to be used as active and intelligent packaging materials, or as their parts.

Abstract
Marine polysaccharides are a kind of natural polysaccharides which isolated and extracted from marine organisms. Now some marine polysaccharides, such as chitosan, sodium alginate and agar, have been proven to exhibit antibacterial, antioxidant functions and biocompatibility, which are often used to preserve food or improve the physicochemical properties of food. However, they still have the defects of unsatisfactory preservation effect and biological activity, which can be remedied by its modification. Chemical modification is the most effective of all modification methods. The advances in common chemical modification methods of chitosan, sodium alginate, agar and other marine polysaccharides and research progress of modified products in food processing and preservation were summarized, and the influence of additional reaction conditions on the existence of chemical modification sites of polysaccharides was discussed. The modification of functional groups in natural marine polysaccharides leads to the change of molecular structure, which can improve the physical, chemical and biological properties of marine polysaccharides. Chemically modified products have been used in various fields of food applications, such as food preservatives, food additives, food packaging, and food processing aids. In general, chemical modification has excellent potential for food processing and preservation, which can improve the function of marine polysaccharides.

Abstract
Meat by-products such as bones, skin, horns, hooves, feet, skull, etc., are produced from slaughtered mammals. Innovative solutions are very important to achieving sustainability and obtaining the added value of meat by-products with the least impact on the environment. Gelatin, which is obtained from products high in collagen, such as dried skin and bones, is used in food processing, and pharmaceuticals. Chitosan is derived from chitin and is well recognized as an edible polymer. It is a natural product that is non-toxic and environmentally friendly. Recently, chitosan has attracted researchers' interests due to its biological activities, including antimicrobial, antitumor, and antioxidant properties. In this review, article, we highlighted the recent available information on the application of gelatin and chitosan as antioxidants, antimicrobials, food edible coating, enzyme immobilization, biologically active compound encapsulation, water treatment, and cancer diagnosis.
