Abstract
Production of the red seaweed Palmaria palmata is currently hindered by a lack of standardised cultivation methods leading to uncertainties in yield and product quality. This study assessed vegetative propagation of meristematic fragments and the protein content and bioactivity potential of resulting plants. Growth was strong and sustained, averaging 5% day-1. Total protein contents initially decreased but recovered as the fragments grew larger and thicker. Samples displayed the highest antioxidant activity early in the experiment, suggesting that wounds may increase the secretion of antioxidant compounds. In silico analysis identified 762 potentially bioactive motifs, including 70 matching in vitro results. The newly discovered peptide SLLYSDITRPGGNMYTTR (SR18), linked to the pigment allophycocyanin, had very strong antioxidant properties and may drive the recorded in vitro activity. Vegetative propagation appears as a strong potential cultivation tool, and the utilised approach can be applied to assess the cultivation and nutritional potential of other seaweed species.

Abstract
Saccharina latissima is a brown seaweed used as a food ingredient. The aim of this work was to study possible differences between S. latissima chemical composition, color, mode of cultivation, harvesting period and site and its environmental conditions. Water temperature, salinity, radiation, and fluorescence were monitored in each harvesting site. Chemical composition of S. latissima varied greatly with period and site, with a high content of carbohydrates and ash. Crude protein content varied from 3.7 % to 12.8 %, with a higher concentration observed in wild samples harvested in Bas-St. Laurent (11.1-12.8 %). Cultivated seaweed also presented a high crude protein (12.2 %) and ash (52 % against 27 % in wild samples) concentrations, but crude fiber and carbohydrates concentrations were lower, reaching up to 2.7 and 1.9-fold, respectively, than those in wild seaweeds. S. latissima presented a more intense yellow color in June. A trend of darker and more green-colored seaweeds when cultivated in the end of summer was confirmed. Our results suggest that variations in chemical components and chromaticity of this species are probably affected by complex interactions of environmental conditions.

Abstract
Tigecycline (TGC) is a new tetracycline antibiotic medication against multidrug-resistant bacteria. However, the toxicity of TGC to microalgae remains largely unknown. In this study, the toxicity of TGC on Scenedesmus obliquus was examined, focusing on changes in algal growth, photosynthetic activity, and transcriptome. According to an acute toxicity test, the IC10 and IC50 values were 0.72 mg/L and 4.15 mg/L, respectively. Analyses of photosynthetic efficiency and related parameters, such as light absorption, energy capture, and electron transport, identified a 35% perturbation in the IC50 group, while the IC10 group remained largely unaffected. Transcriptomic analysis showed that in the IC10 and IC50 treatment groups, there were 874 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) (220 upregulated and 654 downregulated) and 4289 DEGs (2660 upregulated and 1629 downregulated), respectively. Gene Ontology enrichment analysis showed that TGC treatment markedly affected photosynthesis, electron transport, and chloroplast functions. In the IC50 group, a clear upregulation of genes related to photosynthesis and chloroplast functions was observed, which could be an adaptive stress response. In the IC10 group, significant downregulation of DEGs involved in ribosomal pathways and peptide biosynthesis processes was observed. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Gene and Genomes enrichment analysis showed that treatment with TGC also disrupted energy production, protein synthesis, and metabolic processes in S. obliquus. Significant downregulation of key proteins related to Photosystem II was observed under the IC10 TGC treatment. Conversely, IC50 TGC treatment resulted in substantial upregulation across a broad array of photosystem-related proteins from both Photosystems II and I. IC10 and IC50 TGC treatments differentially influenced proteins involved in the photosynthetic electron transport process. This study emphasizes the potential risks of TGC pollution to microalgae, which contributes to a better understanding of the effects of antibiotic contamination in aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract
Driven by a surge in global interest in natural products, macroalgae or seaweed, has emerged as a prime source for nutraceuticals and pharmaceutical applications. Characterized by remarkable genetic diversity and a crucial role in marine ecosystems, these organisms offer not only substantial nutritional value in proteins, fibers, vitamins, and minerals, but also a diverse array of bioactive molecules with promising pharmaceutical properties. Furthermore, macroalgae produce approximately 80% of the oxygen in the atmosphere, highlighting their ecological significance. The unique combination of nutritional and bioactive attributes positions macroalgae as an ideal resource for food and medicine in various regions worldwide. This comprehensive review consolidates the latest advancements in the field, elucidating the potential applications of macroalgae in developing nutraceuticals and therapeutics. The review emphasizes the pivotal role of omics approaches in deepening our understanding of macroalgae's physiological and molecular characteristics. By highlighting the importance of omics, this review also advocates for continued exploration and utilization of these extraordinary marine organisms in diverse domains, including drug discovery, functional foods, and other industrial applications. The multifaceted potential of macroalgae warrants further research and development to unlock their full benefits and contribute to advancing global health and sustainable industries.

Abstract
Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis is an economically important red macroalga, the cultivation of which is affected by abiotic stresses. This research intends to study the response mechanism of various components of the ubiquitin-protease pathway to abiotic stress in G. lemaneiformis. The algae were treated with five common external stresses (high temperature, low temperature, O3, PEG, and water shortage) to study the macroscopic and microscopic manifestations of the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. Firstly, the changes in soluble protein and ubiquitin were detected during the five treatments, and the results showed that the content of soluble protein and ubiquitin significantly increased under most stresses. The content of the soluble protein increased the most on the second day after 20% PEG treatment, which was 1.38 times higher than that of the control group, and the content of ubiquitin increased the most 30 min after water shortage treatment, which was 3.6 times higher than that of the control group. Then, 12 key genes (E1, E2, UPL1, HRD1, UFD1, Cul3, Cul4, DDB2, PIAS1, FZR1, APC8, and COP1) of the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway were studied, including an estimation of the probably regulatory elements in putative promoter regions and an analysis of transcript levels. The results showed that CAAT box, LTR, GC motif, and MBS elements were present in the putative promoter regions, which might have endowed the genes with the ability to respond to stress. The transcript analysis showed that under high temperature, low temperature, PEG, O3, and water shortage, all of the genes exhibited instant and significant up-regulation, and different genes had different response levels to different stresses. Many of them also showed the synergistic effect of transcript up-regulation under various stress treatments. In particular, E1, E2, Cul3, Cul4, UPL1, HRD1, and COP1 performed most significantly under the five stresses. Collectively, our exploration of the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway and the transcript levels of key genes suggest a significant role to cope with adversity, and potential candidate genes can be selected for transformation to obtain stress-resistant strains.

Abstract
Seaweeds are popular foods due to claimed beneficial health effects, but for many there is a lack of scientific evidence. In this study, extracts of the edible seaweeds Aramé, Nori, and Fucus are compared. Our approach intends to clarify similarities and differences in the health properties of these seaweeds, thus contributing to target potential applications for each. Additionally, although Aramé and Fucus seaweeds are highly explored, information on Nori composition and bioactivities is scarce. The aqueous extracts of the seaweeds were obtained by decoction, then fractionated and characterized according to their composition and biological activity. It was recognized that fractioning the extracts led to bioactivity reduction, suggesting a loss of bioactive compounds synergies. The Aramé extract showed the highest antioxidant activity and Nori exhibited the highest potential for acetylcholinesterase inhibition. The identification of the bioactive compounds in the extracts allowed to see that these contained a mixture of phloroglucinol polymers, and it was suggested that Nori’s effect on acetylcholinesterase inhibition may be associated with a smaller sized phlorotannins capable of entering the enzyme active site. Overall, these results suggest a promising potential for the use of these seaweed extracts, mainly Aramé and Nori, in health improvement and management of diseases, namely those associated to oxidative stress and neurodegeneration.

Abstract
Tetracycline (TC) antibiotics can be detected worldwide in the aquatic environment due to their extensive use and low utilization efficiency, and they may affect the physiological processes of non-target organisms. In this study, the acute and sub-acute toxicities of TC on the freshwater microalga Scenedesmus obliquus were investigated with an emphasis on algal photosynthesis and transcription alterations during an 8 d TC exposure. The results showed that the IC10, IC30 and IC50 values were 1.8, 4.1 and 6.9 mg/L, respectively. During sub-acute exposure, the microalgae of the IC10 treatment was able to recover comparable growth to that of the control by day 7, while significantly lower cell densities were observed in the IC30 and IC50 treatments at the end of the exposure. The photosynthetic efficiency Fv/FM of S. obliquus first decreased as the TC concentration increased and then returned to a level close to that of the control on day 8, accompanied by an increase in photosynthetic activities, including light harvesting, electron transport and energy dissipation. Transcriptomic analysis of the IC10 treatment (1.8 mg/L TC) revealed that 2157 differentially expressed genes were up-regulated and 1629 were down-regulated compared with the control. KEGG and GO enrichments demonstrated that 28 photosynthesis-related genes involving light-harvesting chlorophyll protein complex, photosystem I, photosystem II, photosynthetic electron transport and enzymes were up-regulated, which may be the factor responsible for the enhanced photosynthesis and recovery of the microalgae. Our work may be helpful not only for gaining a better understanding of the environmental risk of TC at concentrations close to the real levels in natural waters, but also for explaining photosynthesis and related gene transcription induced by antibiotics.

Abstract
Seaweeds are regarded as a sustainable source of food protein, but protein extraction is severely impaired by the complex extracellular matrix. In this work, we investigated the protein-level effects of enzymatic extraction upstream of carrageenan extraction for the industrial red seaweed Eucheuma denticulatum. Combination of quantitative proteomics and bioinformatic prediction of subcellular localization was shown to have immense potential for process evaluation; even in the case of poorly annotated species such as E. denticulatum. Applying cell wall degrading enzymes markedly improved the relative recovery of intracellular proteins compared to treatment with proteolytic enzymes or no enzymatic treatment. Moreover, results suggest that proteomics data may prove useful for characterizing amino acid composition and that length-normalization is a viable approach for relative protein quantification in non-specific analysis. Importantly, the extracts were abundant in proteins, which contained both previously verified and novel, potential bioactive peptides, highlighting their potential for application as functional food ingredients.

Abstract
MicroRNA-mediated gene regulation in non-vascular plants is potentially involved in several unique biological functions, including biosynthesis of several highly valuable exclusive bioactive compounds, and those small RNAs could be manipulated for the overproduction of essential bioactive compounds in the future. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of endogenous, small (20-24 nucleotides), non-coding RNA molecules that regulate gene expression through the miRNA-mediated mechanisms of either translational inhibition or messenger RNA (mRNA) cleavage. In the past years, studies have mainly focused on elucidating the roles of miRNAs in vascular plants as compared to non-vascular plants. However, non-vascular plant miRNAs have been predicted to be involved in a wide variety of specific biological mechanisms; nevertheless, some of them have been demonstrated explicitly, thus showing that the research field of this plant group owns a noteworthy potential to develop novel investigations oriented towards the functional characterization of these miRNAs. Furthermore, the insights into the roles of miRNAs in non-vascular plants might be of great importance for designing the miRNA-based genetically modified plants for valuable secondary metabolites, active compounds, and biofuels in the future. Therefore, in this current review, we provide an overview of the potential roles of miRNAs in different groups of non-vascular plants such as algae and bryophytes.

Abstract
Hypertension causes many deaths worldwide and has shown an increasing trend as a severe non-communicable disease. Conventional antihypertensive drugs inevitably cause side effects, and great efforts have been made to exploit healthier and more-available substitutes. Microalgae have shown great potential in this regard and have been applied in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Some compounds in microalgae have been proven to have antihypertensive effects. Among these natural compounds, peptides from microalgae are promising angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors because an increasing number of peptides show hypertensive effects and ACE inhibitory-like activity. In addition to acting as ACE inhibitors for the treatment of hypertension, these peptides have other probiotic properties, such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, that are important for the prevention and treatment of hypertension. Numerous studies have revealed the important bioactivities of ACE inhibitors and their mechanisms. This review discusses the antihypertensive effects, structure-activity relationships, molecular docking studies, interaction mechanisms, and other probiotic properties of microalgal ACE inhibitory peptides according to the current research related to microalgae as potential antihypertensive drugs. Possible research directions are proposed. This review contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of microalgal antihypertensive peptides.

Abstract
Brown algae have been part of the human diet for hundreds of years, however, in recent years, commercial and scientific interest in brown algae has increased due to the growing demand for healthier diet by the world population. Brown algae and its metabolites, such as carotenoids, polysaccharides, phlorotannins, and proteins, have been associated with multiple beneficial health effects for different diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, one of the main causes of death in Europe. Since high blood cholesterol levels are one of the major cardiovascular risks, this review intends to provide an overview of current knowledge about the anti-hypercholesterolemic effect of different brown algae species and/or their isolated compounds.

Abstract
Fucus vesiculosus is a brown macroalgae used in food and generally considered safe to be consumed, according to EU Directive (EC 258/97). The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of food preparation on F.vesiculosus of different origins on what concerns its chemical constituents and final bioactivities. The aqueous extract of the seaweeds were obtained at different temperatures, similar to food preparation and then purified by SPE. The compound identification was carried out by Liquid Chromatography High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (LC-HRMS/MS) and algae extracts microstructure were observed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The activities were determined by using antioxidant activity, inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and 3-hidroxi-3-methyl-glutaril-CoA (HMG-CoA) reductase (HMGR) together with Caco-2 cells line simulating the intestinal barrier. The activity of AChE and the HMGR were inhibited by the extracts giving IC50 values of 15.0 ± 0.1 µg/mL and 4.2 ± 0.1 µg/mL, respectively and 45% of the cholesterol permeation inhibition. The main compounds identified were phlorotannins and peptides derivatives. The mode of preparation significantly influenced the final bioactivities. Moreover, the in vitro results suggest that the preparation of F. vesiculosus as a soup could have hypercholesterolemia lowering effect.

Abstract
Studying stress pathways on the level of secondary metabolites that are found in very small concentration in the cells is complicated. In the algae, the role of individual metabolites (such as carotenoids, phenolic compounds, organic acids, and vitamins) and miRNAs that participate in plant's defence are very poorly understood during stressful conditions. Therefore, in the present experiment, the model organism Chlamydomonas reinhardtii was exposed to stress conditions (Lyc and UV-C irradiation) to detect these substances, even at very low concentrations. The purpose was to monitored changes at each response level with a future view to identifying their specific roles under different stress factors. In stress-treated cultures, numerous transcriptomic and metabolomic pathways were triggered in C. reinhardtii. Although Lyc significantly decreased the concentration of AA, suggesting that Lyc has a similar function in C. reinhardtii as in plants. The negative effect of UV-C radiation was based on the production of ROS and enhancement of antioxidant responses, resulting in increased levels of polyphenols and simple phenolic compounds. Both treatments did lead to extensive changes in transcript levels and miRNA expression patterns.

Abstract
Simple Summary The use of feed additives with no side effectsfor enhancing growth performance and improving meat quality in broilers chickens is an essential research topic. In these regards, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of three species of microalgae namely Chlorella vulgaris (CV), Spirulina platensis (SP) and Amphora coffeaformis (AC) on growth performance, profiles of fatty and amino acids, antioxidant status and meat quality of breast muscles. The results demonstrated that the inclusion of studied microalgae notably AC has a positive effect on performance, antioxidant status and meat quality of breast muscle in broiler chickens. Abstract The study used 96 broiler chickens to evaluate the impact of three species of microalgae on performance, profiles of fatty and amino acids, antioxidants, and meat quality of breast muscles. Birds were divided into four groups (24 birds/each) with 4 replicates (6 birds each). Birds in the first group were fed basal diet and served as a control (C). Birds of 2–4 groups were fed basal diet mixed with same dose (1 g/kg diet) of Chlorella vulgaris (CV), Spirulina platensis (SP), and Amphora coffeaformis (AC). At the age of 36 days, performance parameters were reported, and breast muscle samples were collected and stored frozen at −80 °C. AC shared CV in the superiority of increasing final body weight and body weight gain compared to SP and control. AC shared SP in the superiority of increasing the level of essential fatty and amino acids and decreasing the microbial growth in breast muscle compared to CV and control. All studied microalgae reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyl (PC) levels, cooking loss, and aerobic plate count (APC) and increased the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities in breast muscle compared to control. The current study indicated that studied microalgae, notably AC, can be used to enhance performance and meat quality in broilers chickens.

Abstract
Underutilized marine resources (e.g., algae, fish, and shellfish processing by-products), as sustainable alternatives to livestock protein and interesting sources of bioactive compounds, have attracted the attention of the researchers. Aquatic products processing industries are growing globally and producing huge amounts of by-products that often discarded as waste. However, recent studies pointed out that marine waste contains several valuable components including high-quality proteins, lipids, minerals, vitamins, enzymes, and bioactive compounds that can be used against cancer and some cardiovascular disorders. Besides, previously conducted studies on algae have shown the presence of some unique biologically active compounds and valuable proteins. Hence, this chapter points out recent advances in this area of research and discusses the importance of aquaculture and fish processing by-products as alternative sources of proteins and bioactive compounds.
