Abstract
A 60-day feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of including pumpkin seeds and pomace in the diets of Pacific white shrimp Penaeus vannamei, and the effects of these supplements on growth performance, body composition, and total polyphenol, flavonoid and carotenoid contents, as well as on total antioxidant activity, and body color parameters. Five diets were evaluated: pumpkin seeds (PS) at 50 and 100 g·kg-1, pumpkin pomace (PP) at 50 and 100 g·kg-1, and a control treatment. Pacific white shrimp (P. vannamei) juveniles (0.60 ± 0.01 g) were stocked in 15 tanks (310 L), containing 30 shrimps per tank, and the treatments were randomly distributed in triplicate. At the end of the experiment, shrimps were euthanized, weighed, and dissected for further analyses. The inclusion of PS in the diets impaired growth performance, reduced the total flavonoid content and had a pro-oxidative effect on muscle. The inclusion of PP in the diets did not affect growth performance, improved the feed conversion ratio, increased the total flavonoid content in the diets and hepatopancreas, and improved the antioxidant activity of the feeds and shrimp muscle. The total carotenoid content of the feeds increased with the inclusion of PS or PP in the diets; however, the total carotenoid content of shrimp increased only in those fed PP diets. Shrimp fed with PS diets showed a yellowish color and higher saturation when fresh and a reddish color and yellow hue angle after cooking. Shrimp fed PP diets turned reddish and yellowish, both when fresh and after cooking. The inclusion of PS in P. vannamei diets is not recommended; however, PP can be included at 100 g·kg-1 without affecting the growth parameters. Further studies evaluating the inclusion of higher PP levels in shrimp diets are recommended.

Abstract
Under the framework of Water-Energy-Food Nexus, this study investigates the integration of solar-powered desalination with aquaculture and agriculture production systems to grow crops. Brackish water desalination is performed using reverse osmosis (RO), the permeate is directed to an aquaculture unit, and the fish effluent is used as irrigation water for crops. The experiment followed a split-plot design with three main variants: a full irrigation schedule for the basil plants with fish effluents as fertilizers, irrigation as fertigation with chemical fertilizers, and a mixed treatment of effluents and chemical fertilizers at 50% application each. Each treatment was further sprayed with or without foliar nutrient application. RO results gave a permeate recovery of 22%, and a salt rejection of 98.7%. In the aquaculture unit, tilapia harvest weight was 0.458 kg with a survival rate of 97.7% and harvest yield of 25 kg/ m3 of water. Effluent treatment exhibited the highest branching and plant height irrespective of the cut number, reaching 17.7 branches and 62-cm height. The effluent treatment under foliar application recorded the highest fresh and dry weights of basil with 14.7 ton/ha and 4.7 ton/ha, respectively. Effluent irrigation plus foliar application recorded basil yield of 5 kg/m3 effluent water. The dominant essential oil elements were linalool (55.5-61.6%), tau.-cadinol (5.3-8.3%), eucalyptol (5.4-7.7%), eugenol (2-6.8%), and (Z,E)-.alpha.-farnesene (3-5.2%). The study is among the very few integrated systems and, in particular, the current study is the first-time investigation of an integrated desalination, aquaculture, and agriculture production using renewable energy. Therefore, results suggest that integrating desalination, aquaculture, and agriculture could be a potential solution for the global water, energy, and food challenges.

Abstract
This study was carried out to evaluate some legume seeds growing in Nepal for their proximate composition, quantification of total phenolic (TPC) and flavonoid (TFC) contents, and in vitro, antioxidant and antidiabetic activities. These included legume grains such as chickpeas (Cicer arietinum), pea (Pisum sativum), mung bean (Vigna mungo), lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus), broad bean (Vicia faba), lentil (Lens culinaris), soybean (Glycine max), and common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). The legume seeds were ground to make the flour which was extracted with methanol. The phenolic and flavonoid content was estimated by Folin-Ciocalteu’s phenol and aluminum chloride colorimetric methods. The in vitro antioxidant and antidiabetic activity was evaluated by using DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging and α-amylase enzyme inhibition assay. The different legumes showed considerable variations in their phenolic contents (

mg·GAE/g legume seeds). Similarly, the total flavonoid contents showed
mg·QE/g to
mg·QE/g legume seeds. The in vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated in IC50 which ranged from
μg/mL to
μg/mL. The α-amylase inhibition was evaluated in IC50 which ranged from 217.38 μg/mL to 425.75 μg/mL as compared to the standard acarbose of 52.76 μg/mL. This study suggested that legumes are good sources of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats mainly for vegetarian people. The selection of the right legume species could be a good source of natural antioxidants and antidiabetics for nutraceutical uses and the beneficial effects of legumes from human health perspectives. Legume seeds growing in Nepal could be used as a sustainable and cheap meat alternative and are considered the most important food source.

Abstract
The aims of this study were to induce calli from the seeds of three rice varieties (Hommali 105, Munpu, and Niawdum) and investigate their anti-aging potential. First, rice seeds were cultured on a Murashige and Skoog medium (MS medium) supplemented with 2 mg/L of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), 1 mg/L of 1-Naphthalene acetic acid (NAA), and 1 mg/L of 6-Benzylaminopurine (BAP). After three weeks, the calli were extracted with ethanol. Then, their phenolic contents were determined by spectrophotometer and the amino acids were identified by ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC). Their cytotoxicity, anti-oxidant (potassium ferricyanide reducing power assay (PFRAP), DPPH radical scavenging assay (DPPH), lipid peroxidation inhibition (LPO), and superoxide dismutase activity (SOD)), and anti-aging (keratinocyte proliferation, anti-collagenase, anti-inflammation, and anti-tyrosinase) activities were also investigated. Munpu callus (385%) was obtained with a higher yield than Hommali (322%) and Niawdum (297%) calli. The results revealed that the phenolic and amino acid contents were enhanced in the calli. Moreover, the calli were rich in glutamic acid, alanine, and gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA). The callus extracts showed no cytotoxic effects at a concentration of equal to or lower than 0.25 mg/mL. The highest anti-oxidant activities (PFRAP (0.81 mg AAE/mL), DPPH (68.22%), LPO (52.21%), and SOD (67.16%)) was found in Munpu callus extract. This extract also had the highest keratinocyte proliferation (43.32%), anti-collagenase (53.83%), anti-inflammation (85.40%), and anti-tyrosinase (64.77%) activities. The experimental results suggest that the amounts of bioactive compounds and anti-aging activities of rice seeds can be enhanced by the induction of callus formation.

Abstract
The Amazonian açai fruit (Euterpe oleracea) has shown promising anticonvulsant properties, comparable to those of diazepam (BDZ) in in vivo models submitted to pentylenetetrazole (PTZ). PTZ is a classic convulsant agent used in studies for the purpose of screening anticonvulsants and investigating the mechanisms of epilepsy. Herein, we aimed to determine, for the first time, the effect of dietary administration of lyophilized E. oleracea (LEO) on PTZ-induced seizures, using juvenile Colossoma macropomum fish (9.1 ± 1.5 g) as a model. A control diet (0.00% LEO) and two levels of LEO inclusion were established: 5.00% and 10.0% LEO (w/w). Fish were divided into five groups (n = 5): control (0.9% physiological solution; i.p.), PTZ (PTZ 150 mg kg-1; i.p.), PTZ LEO 5.00%, PTZ LEO 10.0%, and BDZ-PTZ (BDZ: diazepam 10 mg kg-1; i.p.). In addition to the electroencephalography (EEG), the lipid peroxidation (TBARS) was quantified in the brain, along with the characterization of behavioral responses. Fish receiving PTZ showed intense action potential bursts (APB), which overlapped with a hyperactive behavior. In PTZ LEO 5.00% and 10.0% groups, convulsive behavior was significantly reduced compared to the PTZ group. Fish fed 5.00% or 10.0% LEO and exposed to PTZ showed less excitability and lower mean amplitude in tracings. The inclusion of 10.0% LEO in the diet prevented the increase in mean amplitude of the EEG waves by 80%, without significant differences to the quantified mean amplitude of the BDZ-PTZ group. TBARS concentration was reduced by 60% in the brain of fish fed 10.0% LEO-enriched diets relative to the PTZ-administered group. The results of this study demonstrated the anticonvulsant and protective roles of LEO to the brain, and the dietary inclusion of LEO seems to be promising for the formulation of functional diets. Results of this study may boost the interest on the anti-seizurogenic properties of Euterpe oleracea, including the development of new approaches for the prevention of seizures in humans and animals with low epileptic threshold.

Abstract
Combining traditional medicine with nanotechnology therefore opens the door to innovative strategies for treating skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) and also contributes to the fight against the rise of antimicrobial resistance. Acanthospermum australe (Loefl.) Kuntze is a medicinal plant used by indigenous peoples in northeastern Argentina to treat SSTIs. Spherical and stable silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) of 14 ± 2 nm were synthesized from the aqueous extract of A. australe and silver nitrate. The antimicrobial activity against main species causing SSTIs and cytotoxicity on peripheral blood mononuclear cells of AgNP solution and its synthesis components were evaluated. Compared to its synthesis components, AgNP solution showed greater antimicrobial activity and lower cytotoxicity. The antimicrobial activity of AgNPs was due to the silver and not to the metabolites of the aqueous extract present on the surface of the nanoparticles. The plant extract played an important role in the formation of stable AgNPs and acted as a modulator of cytotoxic and immune responses.

Abstract
Moringa oleifera possesses numerous advantageous effects like anti-microbial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory, leaves contain a high multiplicity of the bioactive compound; however, little is identified about its bioaccessibility. The objective of this study was to assess the bioefficacy, bioaccessible and anticancer activity of Moringa oleifera in a PC3 cell line before and after simulated in vitro digestion. Digested and non-digested extracts were prepared and evaluated for total polyphenols, flavonoids, and total antioxidant capacity by spectrophotometric analysis and LCMS analysis. Cell viability, apoptosis, colony formation, cell cycle, Glutathione level, and gene expression study were tested with Moringa oleifera (MO) and digested Moringa oleifera (DMO). Results revealed that total polyphenols, total flavonoids, and TAC were significantly (P < 0.05) reduced after in vitro digestion. Furthermore, biological activity against the PC3 cell line showed that DMO extracts significant cytotoxic and reduced cell vitality compared to the MO. In addition, DMO extract had a noteworthy effect in apoptosis and inhibiting the colony formation ability; while cell cycle was blocked in S phase by both extracts but significant effect showed in DMO. These studies have increased understanding of the influence of in vitro simulation digestion on the biological activity effect of M. oleifera against prostate cancer bone metastasis.Supplemental data for this article is available online at https://doi.org/10.1080/01635581.2021.1933099 .

Abstract
The acknowledgement of bioactive functions of compost teas promotes the research on characteristics and potential application of these heterogeneous water-soluble extracts from recycled biomasses. In this work, compost teas were isolated from on-farm composts made with agro-industrial residues of artichoke, pepper and coffee husks with the aim to evaluate the structural-activity relationship of dissolved bioactive molecules. The molecular features of compost teas were determined by 13C-CPMAS NMR spectroscopy, Infrared spectroscopy, and off-line pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry. Bioactivity of different compost teas was tested on Basil seeds germination, while the antioxidant capacity was measured by ABTS and DDPH spectrophotometric assays. The antimicrobial activity was measured against some pathogenic human bacterial strains. The seed germination experiment showed no phytotoxic effects and a significant increase of both root and epicotyls upon application of coffee husks and pepper CT samples. The same compost teas revealed the largest antioxidant activity and a clear antimicrobial effect determined by MIC (Minimal Inhibitory Concentration) against some gram-negative bacterial strains such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The bioactivity of CT-samples was related to their general hydrophobic features and to specific molecular composition. In particular, 13C-CPMAS NMR spectra and off-line thermochemolysis GC-MS highlighted a close correlation between radical scavenger activity and antibacterial bioactive functions with bio-available soluble aromatic compounds, such as lignin and phenols derivatives. The antioxidant and, antibacterial properties of compost teas from green composts encourages an innovative potential application of these eco-friendly products not only in agricultural applications but also in nutraceutical and pharmaceutical fields.

rylamide (AA) in food is a public health concern that has attracted scientists’ attention worldwide.
Objective:
This study was carried out to investigate the efficiency of
Moringa oleifera (M. olifera)
leaves in the reduction of AA in French fries in vitro and its hepato-protective properties against AA-induced liver toxicity in vivo.
Materials and Methods:
Total phenolic, flavonoid, tannin contents and antioxidant potential of
M. oleifera
leaves were evaluated and the phenolic constituents characterized via HPLC. AA content was also monitored in French fries using LC-MS/MS. For in vivo assay, mice were treated with AA alone or in combination with
M. oleifera
(150 and 250 mg/kg IP).
Results:
Phytochemical screening showed that gallic acid, ellagic acid, epicatechin, and quercetin were the most abundant phenolic compounds identified. This work also demonstrated a nearly 37% reduction in AA when French fries were soaked in 1% M. oleifera. Moreover, AA-intoxicated mice resulted in a significant (P < 0.05) elevation in the liver enzyme alanine aminotransferase (ALT), which was restored when pre-treated with M. oleifera.
Conclusion:
This study proved that M. olifera could be effective in reducing AA levels in French fries and that treatment with M. oleifera extract can restore the hepatic damage in AA-intoxicated mice.
