Abstract
Formation of the placenta during gestation is required to support fetal growth and development. Derived from the placenta, trophoblast cells express nuclear and membrane-bound receptors. Among these receptors is the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) which plays a key role in placental development. Activation of EGFR-mediated signaling in trophoblast cells regulates critical processes, such as proliferation, differentiation, invasion, and fusion during pregnancy, making it essential for normal placental formation. Dysfunction of EGFR in placental trophoblast cells has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, including intrauterine growth restriction, preeclampsia, and preterm birth. Ubiquitous environmental chemicals, like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, organochlorine pesticides, and bisphenols, have been reported to modulate EGFR signaling pathways, potentially contributing to placental dysfunction. This review explores the pivotal role of EGFR signaling in placental development and function, with a focus on how environmental chemicals interfere with EGFR-mediated pathways and placental cell functions as well as their implications for pregnancy outcomes. Findings presented herein underscore the need for further research into the effects of exposure to environmental chemicals on modulating EGFR signaling pathways in the context of placental health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hormonal, metabolic, and immunologic factors may cause several skin changes during pregnancy. Therefore, it is important for pregnant women to be aware of these expected changes in their skin appearance in order to prevent unwanted effects and to choose the appropriate preventive or treatment measures via trustable sources of information. OBJECTIVE This study would highlight the most common normal and abnormal physiological skin changes mothers usually complain about before or after pregnancy. The most commonly used skin care products, their sources of knowledge, information, perception, and experiences on these problems and products were also considered. In addition, patient satisfaction levels and their sources and types of knowledge were also investigated. METHODS Across sectional survey was distributed among women who met the inclusion criteria and were citizens in the Hashimate Kingdom of Jordan. This survey was composed of a number of questions used for investigating participant's socio-demographic characteristics, during and post-pregnancy characteristics and medications used, comparison of skin related complains reported by these women, in addition to their use of skin care products. Women's knowledge, perception, and experience regarding their use of skin care products were also included. RESULTS Of the 337 participants in this study, 6.5% and 6.8% of women were using thyroid medications and antihypertensive agents. An increase of around 3% in pregnancy-related skin changes, such as hyperpigmentation, hair loss, cellulite, and wrinkles, was predominant among women. Despite the prevalence of hyperpigmentation, only 4% and 17% of women used depigmentation and sunblock products. Moreover, women declare that their information about the use of skin care products was mainly via social media or self-experience. A low rate of consultation with dermatologists and the reliance on self-diagnosis or non-professional advice were shown. CONCLUSION This study suggests a lack of awareness about effective preventive measures for skin-related disorders commonly occurring during pregnancy, potentially exacerbated by reliance on unverified sources of information, such as social media. Therefore, incorporating education about skin changes into routine prenatal care could empower women to make informed decisions and reduce the stigma associated with these changes.

Abstract
Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) is a food-borne pathogen associated with serious pregnancy complications, including miscarriage, stillbirth, preterm birth, neonatal sepsis, and meningitis. Although Lm infection within the gastrointestinal tract is well studied, little is known about the influence sex hormones may have on listeriosis. Estradiol-17beta and progesterone not only have receptors within the gastrointestinal tract but are significantly increased during pregnancy. The presence of these hormones may play a role in susceptibility to listeriosis during pregnancy. Caco-2 cell monolayers were grown on trans-well inserts in the presence of estradiol 17-beta (E2), progesterone (P4), both hormones, or no hormones (control). Cells were inoculated with Lm for 1 hour, before rinsing with gentamycin and transfer to fresh media. Trans-epithelial resistance was recorded hourly, and bacterial burden of the apical media, intracellular lysates, and basal media were assessed at 6 hours post inoculation. There were no significant differences in bacterial replication when directly exposed to sex steroids, and Caco-2 cell epithelial barrier function was not impacted during culture with Lm. Addition of progesterone significantly reduced intracellular bacterial burden compared to estradiol 17-beta only and no hormone controls. Interestingly, estradiol 17-beta only treatment was associated with significantly increased Lm within the basal compartment, compared to reduction in the intracellular and apical layers. These data indicate that the sex hormones P4 and E2 alone do not significantly impact intestinal epithelial barrier integrity during listeriosis, but that addition of P4 and E2, alone or in combination, was associated with reduced epithelial cell bacterial burden and apical release of Lm.

Abstract
Oral cavity dysbiosis is associated with numerous inflammatory diseases, including diabetes, inflammatory bowel diseases, and periodontal disease. Changes in the oral microenvironment lead to bidirectional interactions between pathogens and individual host systems, which may induce systemic inflammation. There is increasing evidence linking the condition of the oral cavity with the most common causes of female infertility, such as polycystic ovary syndrome and endometriosis, as well as gestational complications, e.g., low birth weight, preterm delivery, and miscarriages. This review highlights the composition of the female oral microbiome in relation to infertility-related disorders, such as endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome, and provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge on the relationship between a dysbiotic oral microbiome, pregnancy, and its impact on the female reproductive tract.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE Leiomyomatosis peritonealis disseminata is a very rare disease that involves the presence of multiple benign tumors of smooth muscle origin all over the peritoneal cavity. Due to its ability to mimic malignant pathologies, it is associated with significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. This case highlights a unique case of LPD to further raise awareness and provide useful information on how to manage this condition. CASE PRESENTATION A 28-year-old female was admitted with progressive increase in abdominal distension and discomfort. Imaging studies revealed multiple peritoneal nodules that mimicked metastatic disease. Laparoscopic exploration and histopathological examination subsequently confirmed the diagnosis of LPD. She never had a history of malignancy and hormonal therapy, which are the usual associations with this condition. CLINICAL DISCUSSION Diagnosis of LPD is usually missed because its clinically and radiologically smoky appearance of the belly may mimic peritoneal carcinomatosis. Pathogenesis includes hormonal factors, though rare cases are idiopathic. Symptomatic nodules are usually treated with surgical excision and in recurrent cases, attempts at hormonal manipulation can be done. CONCLUSION This case shows the inclusion of LPD in the differential diagnosis of peritoneal masses is of paramount importance, especially in women of childbearing age. Early and accurate diagnosis will help in avoiding the unnecessary aggressive measures.

Abstract
The outer surface of chorionic villi in the human placenta consists of a single multinucleated cell called the syncytiotrophoblast (STB). The unique cellular ultrastructure of the STB presents challenges in deciphering its gene expression signature at the single-cell level, as the STB contains billions of nuclei in a single cell. There are many gaps in understanding the molecular mechanisms and developmental trajectories involved in STB formation and differentiation. To identify the underlying control of the STB, we performed comparative single nucleus (SN) and single cell (SC) RNA sequencing on placental tissue and tissue-derived trophoblast organoids (TOs). We found that SN RNA sequencing was essential to capture the STB population from both tissue and TOs. Differential gene expression and pseudotime analysis of TO-derived STB identified three distinct nuclear subtypes reminiscent of those recently identified in vivo . These included a juvenile nuclear population that exhibited both CTB and STB marker expression, a population enriched in genes involved in oxygen sensing, and finally a subtype enriched in transport and GTPase signaling molecules. Notably, suspension culture conditions of TOs that restore the native orientation of the STB (STB out ) showed elevated expression of canonical STB markers and pregnancy hormones, along with a greater proportion of the STB nucleus subtype specializing in transport and GTPase signaling, compared to those cultivated with an inverted STB polarity (STB in ). Gene regulatory analysis identified novel markers of STB differentiation conserved in tissue and TOs, including the chromatin remodeler RYBP, that exhibited STB-specific RNA and protein expression. CRISPR/Cas9 knockout of RYBP in STB in TOs did not impact cell-cell fusion; however, bulk RNA sequencing revealed downregulation of the pregnancy hormone CSH1 and upregulation of multiple genes associated with the oxygen-sensing STB nuclear subtype. Finally, we compared STB gene expression signatures amongst first trimester tissue, full-term tissue, and TOs, identifying many commonalities but also notable variability across each sample type. This indicates that STB gene expression is responsive to its environmental context. Our findings emphasize the utility of TOs to accurately model STB differentiation and the distinct nuclear subtypes observed in vivo , offering a versatile platform for unraveling the molecular mechanisms governing STB functions in placental biology and disease.

Abstract
Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a deep systemic mycosis caused by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. PCM affects predominantly men in their fifth and sixth decades of life, with low prevalence in women. The reasons for this discrepancy are not fully understood, but oestrogen may influence the transformation of the fungus and modulate the immune response. OBJECTIVE To describe and correlate the clinical and histopathological characteristics of oral PCM in women. MATERIAL AND METHODS This study analysed 45 cases of oral PCM in women, collecting clinical data such as age, smoking and alcohol consumption habits, pain, lesion location, duration of symptoms, presence of unique or multifocal lesions, as well as associated findings such as skin lesions, lymphadenopathy and systemic alterations. Additionally, histopathological characteristics were examined, including the presence of fungi, the quantity of multinucleated giant cells and the presence of well-organised granulomas, non-granulomatous areas, microabscesses and pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia. All data were recorded, tabulated and subjected to statistical analysis. Fungal quantification in the analysed slides was performed using the QuPath software, counting each fungal structure and analysing it based on the calculated specimen area. RESULTS The average age of patients was 44.18 years (range: 20-68 years). Over half (53.3%) were smokers and 20% were alcoholics. Most lesions were multifocal (51%), with the alveolar ridge being the most commonly affected site, and pain was reported by 68.89% of the patients. Histopathologically, 33.33% of lesions had a low count of visible fungi per square millimetre, 37.78% had a moderate count and 28.89% had a high count. Most lesions (82.22%) contained many multinucleated giant cells, 55.56% had well-organised granulomas, 75.56% presented with microabscesses and 88.89% showed pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia. CONCLUSION Despite its rarity in women, PCM has similar clinical and histopathological features compared to those in men and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of unique and multifocal ulcerated lesions.

Abstract
This narrative review highlights the impact of exercise on vascular health in females over the lifespan with an emphasis on puberty, pregnancy and menopause. These events encompass substantial changes in sex hormone levels, particularly oestrogens and progesterone. They are also accompanied by distinct adaptations of the central, peripheral and cerebral vasculature. Regular exercise is an effective mechanism to reduce vascular risk in females of all ages, especially for those at higher risk for vascular disorders. However, there are large variabilities in the vascular adaptations to exercise in females that may be related to circulating sex hormone levels. In addition, exogenous hormones, such as oral contraceptives taken after puberty or hormonal replacement therapy taken to mitigate symptoms of menopause, may interact with exercise-induced changes in vascular function. We highlight how more research is needed to understand the optimal exercise interventions to promote vascular health in females across the lifespan, especially during times of hormonal transition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study focused on investigating the relation of age at first birth (AFB) with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) risk in women based on the 2011-2020 NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) data. METHODS Women were analyzed using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 2011 to 2020 in the US. Both AFB and RA diagnoses were obtained through self-reported questionnaires. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were determined using logistic regression models. RESULTS Among the 7,449 women included in this study, 552 (7%) were diagnosed with RA. In comparison with women who had an AFB of 30-32 years (reference group), those who had an AFB < 18, 18-20, 21-23, 24-26, and > 35 years had the fully adjusted ORs and 95% CIs of 4.00 (95% CI 1.70, 9.40), 2.90 (95% CI 1.25, 6.73), 3.00 (95% CI 1.32, 6.80), 3.18 (95% CI 1.36-7.42), and 3.36 (95% CI 1.04-10.7), respectively. Due to the limitations inherent in cross-sectional studies, we have not observed significant differences in the risk of RA between women aged 27-29 and 33-35 at the AFB. Further research is warranted to refine these findings. CONCLUSION Women with an AFB < 26, or > 35 years have a higher risk of developing RA later in life. Policymakers may consider focusing more on women in these AFB age ranges in screening RA and making preventive measures.

This study aims to fill this gap by studying the gut and vaginal microbiota changes throughout pregnancy and assess how these changes relate to pregnancy outcomes among a cohort of pregnant women in eastern Ethiopia. METHODS AND ANALYSIS Vaginal and stool samples will be collected using DNA/RNA Shield Collection kits three times starting at 12-22 weeks, 28-36 weeks and at birth (within 7 days). Postnatally, newborns' skin swabs (at birth) and rectal swabs will be obtained until 2 years of age. Moreover, breast milk samples at birth and 6 months and environmental samples (water, indoor air and soil) will be collected at enrolment, birth, 6, 12 and 24 months post partum. DNA will be extracted using Roche kits. Metagenomic sequencing will be performed to identify metataxonomic profiling and assess variations in microbial profiles, and α and β diversity of the microbiota. Information on socioeconomic, behavioural, household and biological factors will be collected at enrolment. The collected data will be coded, entered into EpiData 3.1 and analysed using Stata 17. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The Institutional Health Research Ethics Review Committee (Ref No. IHRERC/033/2022) of Haramaya University, Ethiopia has approved this study ethically. Written informed consent regarding the study and sample storage for biobanking will be obtained from all participants. Results will be published in international peer-reviewed journals, and summaries will be provided to the study funders. Clinical study data will be submitted to Data Compass (https://datacompass.lshtm.ac.uk/), and molecular profiles of the microbiome and whole-genome sequences will be submitted to the European Nucleotide Archive (https://www. ebi.ac.uk/ena). Requests for data should be directed to daberaf@gmail.com. The decision to share data will be made by the study steering committee under the College of Health and Medical Sciences, Haramaya University, Ethiopia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic health condition (long-lasting) due to inadequate control of blood levels of glucose. This study presents a prediction of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus among women using various Machine Learning Algorithms deployed to predict the diabetic condition. A University of California Irvine Diabetes Mellitus Dataset posted in Kaggle was used for analysis. METHODS The dataset included eight risk factors for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus prediction, including Age, Systolic Blood Pressure, Glucose, Body Mass Index, Insulin, Skin Thickness, Diabetic Pedigree Function, and Pregnancy. R language was used for the data visualization, while the algorithms considered for the study are Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machines, Decision Trees and Extreme Gradient Boost. The performance analysis of these algorithms on various classification metrics is also presented here, considering the Area Under the Curve and Receiver Operating Characteristics score is the best for Extreme Gradient Boost with 85%, followed by Support Vector Machines and Decision Trees. RESULTS The Logistic Regression is showing low performance. But the Decision Trees and Extreme Gradient Boost show promising performance against all the classification metrics. But the Support Vector Machines offers a lower support value; hence it cannot be claimed to be a good classifier. The model showed that the most significant predictors of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus were strongly correlated with Glucose Levels and mediumly correlated with Body Mass Index, whereas Age, Skin Thickness, Systolic Blood Pressure, Insulin, Pregnancy, and Pedigree Function were less significant. This type of real-time analysis has proved that the symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in women fall entirely different compared to men, which highlights the importance of Glucose Levels and Body Mass Index in women. CONCLUSION The prediction of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus helps public health professionals to help people by suggesting proper food intake and adjusting lifestyle activities with good fitness management in women to make glucose levels and body mass index controlled. Therefore, the healthcare systems should give special attention to diabetic conditions in women to reduce exacerbations of the disease and other associated symptoms. This work attempts to predict the occurrence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus among women on their behavioral and biological conditions.

Abstract
Asthma, a common chronic respiratory condition, poses unique challenges in pregnancy, impacting both maternal and fetal health. Of note, 8-13% of pregnant women suffer from asthma, a condition that can worsen, stabilize, or improve during pregnancy. These fluctuations necessitate a nuanced management strategy to ensure the health of both the mother and fetus. Adverse outcomes, such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes and increased cesarean delivery rates are associated with poorly controlled asthma. From a fetal perspective, the risks include preterm birth and a low birth weight. Physiological changes in pregnancy, such as an increased tidal volume and altered drug metabolism due to increased blood volume, complicate the management of asthma. The safety of asthma medications during pregnancy remains a significant concern, with ongoing research into their teratogenic effects. Recent advancements in treatment include the development of biologics and the increased use of personalized medicine, integrating pharmacogenomics and immunological profiling to tailor treatments to individual needs. Digital health tools have also emerged, enabling improved patient monitoring and management. The present review highlights the complex interplay between asthma management and pregnancy outcomes, advocating for comprehensive care approaches that consider the dynamic physiological changes during pregnancy. It underscores the need for ongoing research into the safety of medication and innovative therapeutic strategies to improve health outcomes for pregnant women with asthma and their babies.

Abstract
Bisphenols are mainly used as protective coatings for plastics and resin-based materials in various consumer products. Industrial producers have a high demand for bisphenol A (BPA) among all bisphenol substitutes for various consumer products. However, according to reports, prolonged exposure to BPA can cause multiple health issues, including neurodevelopmental disorders in young children. BPA exposure during pregnancy has been considered as the primary cause of increasing the risk of neurological disorders in children as their neural systems are designed to respond to any environmental changes during prenatal life. Recently, there has been an increased focus on the effects of prenatal exposure to BPA, as it has been found to alter gene expression related to epigenetic mechanisms like DNA methylation, histone modification, and microRNA expression. Based on the evidence, frequent interactions can lead to inherited changes in an individual's neural profile. In this review, we delve into the current knowledge regarding the toxicity mechanism of BPA for expecting mothers. Next, we will discuss the possible action of BPA on the epigenetic mechanism during brain development. This is especially important to portray an overview on the role of epigenetic modification caused by prenatal BPA exposure and next, give future directions for improving human health risk assessment caused by BPA exposure.

Abstract
Maternal stress during gestation may affect the development and responsiveness of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) and immune system in the progeny. Stressor type, duration and gestational stage at which the stressor occurs may all influence the short and long-term effects on the future progeny. The present study advances the characterization of the timing of gestational stress on the stress responsiveness and immune and behavioral phenotypes of the progeny. First, parity sows were hand-fed hydrocortisone acetate (stressed) or placebo (controls) during mid or late gestation. Colostrum and cord blood were collected. Blood samples were obtained from a subset of piglets (n = 36) born to these sows during lactation, pre- and post-weaning, and during an ACTH challenge. Stress and immune measures were assessed. Piglets born to sows stressed during mid-gestation had reduced measures of humoral immunity, including immunoglobulins and interleukin-4. Conversely, piglets born to late-stressed sows exhibited a delayed or dampened stress response to weaning and an ACTH challenge. They also had a skewed pro-inflammatory phenotype, as evidenced by increased interleukin-17 and tumor necrosis factor-α. Overall, these data suggest that the stage of gestation at which gestational stress occurs has differential effects on the HPA axis and immune development of the progeny, resulting in differential stress responsiveness and immune and behavioral phenotypes.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease is the leading indirect cause of maternal morbidity and mortality, accounting for nearly one third of maternal deaths during pregnancy. The burden of cardiovascular disease in pregnancy is increasing, as are the incidence of maternal morbidity and mortality. Normal physiologic adaptations to pregnancy, including increased cardiac output and plasma volume, may unmask cardiac conditions, exacerbate previously existing conditions, or create de novo complications. It is important for care providers to understand the normal physiologic changes of pregnancy and how they may impact the care of patients with cardiovascular disease. This review outlines the physiologic adaptions during pregnancy and their pathologic implications for some of the more common cardiovascular conditions in pregnancy.

Abstract
Accidental exposure to high-dose radiation while pregnant has shown significant negative effects on the developing fetus. One fetal organ which has been studied is the placenta. The placenta performs all essential functions for fetal development, including nutrition, respiration, waste excretion, endocrine communication, and immunological functions. Improper placental development can lead to complications during pregnancy, as well as the occurrence of intrauterine growth-restricted (IUGR) offspring. IUGR is one of the leading indicators of fetal programming, classified as an improper uterine environment leading to the predisposition of diseases within the offspring. With numerous studies examining fetal programming, there remains a significant gap in understanding the placenta's role in irradiation-induced fetal programming. This review aims to synthesize current knowledge on how irradiation affects placental function to guide future research directions. This review provides a comprehensive overview of placental biology, including its development, structure, and function, and summarizes the placenta's role in fetal programming, with a focus on the impact of radiation on placental biology. Taken together, this review demonstrates that fetal radiation exposure causes placental degradation and immune function dysregulation. Given the placenta's crucial role in fetal development, understanding its impact on irradiation-induced IUGR is essential.

Abstract
Steroid hormones are important modulators of many physiological processes, and measurements of steroids in blood, saliva, and urine matrices are widely used to assess endocrine pathologies and stress. However, these matrices cannot be used to retrospectively assess early-life stress and developmental endocrine pathologies, because they do not integrate steroid levels over the long term. A novel biological matrix in which to measure steroids is primary teeth (or "baby teeth"). Primary teeth develop early in life and accumulate various endogenous molecules during their gradual formation. Here, we developed and validated the first assay to measure steroids in human primary teeth using liquid chromatography-tandem spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Our assay is highly sensitive, specific, accurate, and precise. It allows for the simultaneous quantification of 17 steroids in primary teeth (16 of which have not been examined previously in primary teeth). Overall, steroid levels in primary teeth were relatively low, and 8 steroids were quantifiable. Levels of dehydroepiandrosterone, cortisol, and progesterone were the highest of the 17 steroids examined. Next, we used this assay to perform steroid profiling in primary teeth from males and females. The same 8 steroids were quantifiable, and no sex differences were found. Levels of androgens (androstenedione and testosterone) were positively correlated, and levels of glucocorticoids (cortisol, cortisone, corticosterone, 11-dehydrocorticosterone) were also positively correlated. These data demonstrate that multiple steroids can be quantified by LC-MS/MS in human primary teeth, and this method potentially provides a powerful new way to retrospectively assess early-life stress and developmental endocrine pathologies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Phenols and parabens are two classes of high production volume chemicals that are used widely in consumer and personal care products and have been associated with reproductive harm and pregnancy complications, such as preeclampsia and gestational diabetes. However, studies examining their influence on maternal blood pressure and gestational hypertension are limited. OBJECTIVES We investigated associations between individual phenols, parabens, and their mixture on maternal blood pressure measurements, including systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) and hypertension during pregnancy (defined as stage 1 or 2 hypertension), among N = 1,433 Puerto Rico PROTECT study participants. METHODS We examined these relationships cross-sectionally at two time points during pregnancy (16-20 and 24-28 wks gestation) and longitudinally using linear mixed models (LMMs). Finally, we used quantile g-computation to examine the mixture effect on continuous (SBP, DBP) and binary (hypertension during pregnancy) blood pressure outcomes. RESULTS We observed a trend of higher odds of hypertension during pregnancy with exposure to multiple analytes and the overall mixture [including bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S (BPS), triclocarbon (TCC), triclosan (TCS), benzophenone-3 (BP-3), 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), 2,5-dichlorophenol (2,5-DCP), methyl paraben (M-PB), propyl paraben (P-PB), butyl paraben (B-PB), and ethyl paraben (E-PB)], especially at 24-28 wk gestation, with an adjusted mixture odds ratio ( OR ) = 1.57 (95% CI: 1.03, 2.38). Lower SBP and higher DBP were also associated with individual analytes, with results from LMMs most consistent for methyl paraben (M-PB) or propyl paraben (P-PB) and increased DBP across pregnancy [adjusted M-PB β = 0.78 (95% CI: 0.17, 1.38) and adjusted P-PB β = 0.85 (95% CI: 0.19, 1.51)] and for BPA, which was associated with decreased SBP (adjusted β = - 0.57 ; 95% CI: - 1.09 , - 0.05 ). Consistent with other literature, we also found evidence of effect modification by fetal sex, with a strong inverse association observed between the overall exposure mixture and SBP at visit 1 among participants carrying female fetuses only. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate that phenol and paraben exposure may collectively increase the risk of stage 1 or 2 hypertension during pregnancy, which has important implications for fetal and maternal health. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP14008.

Abstract
Accumulating evidence suggests that heavy metal exposure may have adverse effects on the fetal development. Furthermore, disruption of serum hormone homeostasis can result in the adverse pregnancy outcomes. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the potential association between heavy metals and missed abortion, with a focus on whether serum hormones mediate this relationship. The concentrations of heavy metals and hormones in serum were measured in this case-control study. Statistical models including, logistic regression model, principal component analysis (PCA), and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression model were employed to examine the relationship between heavy metals, serum hormones, and missed abortion. Furthermore, the mediation analysis was performed to assess the role of serum hormones as potential mediators in this relationship. This study revealed significant associations between heavy metal exposure and missed abortion. Notable, the WQS index weight, which was mainly influenced by copper (Cu) and zine (Zn), is associated with missed abortion. Moreover, heavy metals including manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), Zn, arsenic (As), Cu, cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) were found to be associated with serum levels of β-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG), progesterone (P), estradiol (E2), and lactogen (HPL). In addition, the mediation analysis indicated that β-hCG explained a portion of the association (ranging from 18.77 to 43.51%) of between Mn, Ni, Zn, and As exposure and missed abortion. Serum P levels explained 17.93 to 51.70% of the association between Ni, Cu, and As exposure and missed abortion. Serum E2 levels played a significant mediating role, explaining a portion of the association (ranging from 22.14 to 73.60%) between Mn, Ni, Cu, As, Cd, and Pb exposure and missed abortion. Our results suggested that β-hCG, P, and E2 are one of the potential mediators in the complex relationship between heavy metals exposure and missed abortion. These results highlight the importance of considering both heavy metal exposure and serum hormone levels in understanding the etiology of missed abortion.

Abstract
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is an important health issue, as it is connected with adverse effects to the mother as well as the fetus. A factor of essence for the pathology of this disorder is the gut microbiota, which seems to have an impact on the development and course of GDM. The role of the gut microbiota on maternal reproductive health and all the changes that happen during pregnancy as well as during the neonatal period is of high interest. The correct establishment and maturation of the gut microbiota is of high importance for the development of basic biological systems. The aim of this study is to provide a systematic review of the literature on the effect of GDM on the gut microbiota of neonates, as well as possible links to morbidity and mortality of neonates born to mothers with GDM. Systematic research took place in databases including PubMed and Scopus until June 2024. Data that involved demographics, methodology, and changes to the microbiota were derived and divided based on patients with exposure to or with GDM. The research conducted on online databases revealed 316 studies, of which only 16 met all the criteria and were included in this review. Research from the studies showed great heterogeneity and varying findings at the level of changes in α and β diversity and enrichment or depletion in phylum, gene, species, and operational taxonomic units in the neonatal gut microbiota of infants born to mothers with GDM. The ways in which the microbiota of neonates and infants are altered due to GDM remain largely unclear and require further investigation. Future studies are needed to explore and clarify these mechanisms.

Abstract
The endometrium is crucial for the perpetuation of human species. It is a complex and dynamic tissue lining the inner wall of the uterus, regulated throughout a woman's life based on estrogen and progesterone fluctuations. During each menstrual cycle, this multicellular tissue undergoes cyclical changes, including regeneration, differentiation in order to allow egg implantation and embryo development, or shedding of the functional layer in the absence of pregnancy. The biology of the endometrium relies on paracrine interactions between epithelial and stromal cells involving complex signaling pathways that are modulated by the variations of estrogen and progesterone levels across the menstrual cycle. Understanding the complexity of estrogen and progesterone receptor signaling will help elucidate the mechanisms underlying normal reproductive physiology and provide fundamental knowledge contributing to a better understanding of the consequences of hormonal imbalances on gynecological conditions and tumorigenesis. In this narrative review, we delve into the physiology of the endometrium, encompassing the complex signaling pathways of estrogen and progesterone.

Abstract
Phoenix dactylifera L. (date palm) is the most significant member of the palm family (Arecaceae), particularly in the Middle East and Arab World. It is a valuable source of both primary and secondary metabolites including sugars, amino acids, phenolic acids, flavonoids, proanthocyanidins, carotenoids, phytosterols, terpenes and sphingolipids, besides vitamins and minerals. Besides, it possesses a wide array of pharmacologic activities viz. immunomodulatory, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, nephroprotective, anti-mutagenic and anti-cancer activities, in addition to its positive effects on male and female fertility. Further research is still required to deeply understand its clinical implications, especially concerning women's health. Moreover, there are other Phoenix species that still need to be investigated to learn more about their undiscovered phytochemical components and biological activities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to explore the association of female reproductive factors (age at first birth (AFB), age at last birth (ALB), number of pregnancies, and live births) with history of cardiovascular disease (CVD). METHODS A total of 15,715 women aged 20 years or over from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys from 1999 to 2018 were included in our analysis. Weighted multivariable logistic regression analysis and restricted cubic spline (RCS) model were used to evaluate the association of AFB and ALB with history of CVD in women. Additionally, the relationship between the number of pregnancies, and live births and history of CVD was also explored. RESULTS After adjusting for potential confounding factors, the RCS plot showed a U-curve relationship between AFB, ALB and history of CVD. Among them, AFB was associated with congestive heart failure (CHF), heart attack, and stroke in a U-shaped curve. Additionally, this U-shaped correlation also exists between ALB and CHF and stroke. However, the number of pregnancies and live births was liner positive associated with history of CVD, including coronary heart disease, CHF, angina pectoris, heart attack, and stroke. CONCLUSIONS Women with younger or later AFB and ALB have higher odds of CVD in later life. Further study is warranted to verify the underlying mechanisms of this association.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neighborhood walkability may influence maternal-fetal exposure to environmental hazards and maternal-fetal health (e.g., fetal growth restriction, reproductive toxicity). However, few studies have explored the association between neighborhood walkability and hormones in pregnant women. METHODS We included 533 pregnant women from the Hangzhou Birth Cohort Study II (HBCS-II) with testosterone (TTE) and estradiol (E2) measured for analysis. Neighborhood walkability was evaluated by calculating a walkability index based on geo-coded addresses. Placental metals were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). TTE and E2 levels in umbilical cord blood were measured using chemiluminescence microparticle immunoassay (CMIA). Linear regression model was used to estimate the relationship between the walkability index, placental metals, and sex steroid hormones. Effect modification was also assessed to estimate the effect of placental metals on the associations of neighborhood walkability with TTE and E2. RESULTS Neighborhood walkability was significantly linked to increased E2 levels (P trend=0.023). Compared with participants at the first quintile (Q1) of walkability index, those at the third quintiles (Q3) had lower chromium (Cr) levels (β = -0.212, 95% CI = -0.421 to -0.003). Arsenic (As), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), antimony (Sb), selenium (Se), tin (Sn), and vanadium (V) were linked to decreased TTE levels, and cadmium (Cd) was linked to increased TTE levels. No metal was significantly associated with E2 levels in trend analysis. In the analysis of effect modification, the associations of neighborhood walkability with TTE and E2 were significantly modified by Mn (P = 0.005) and Cu (P = 0.049) respectively. CONCLUSION Neighborhood walkability could be a favorable factor for E2 production during pregnancy, which may be inhibited by maternal exposure to heavy metals.

Abstract
Endometriosis is one of the most common causes of chronic pelvic pain and infertility, affecting 10% of women of reproductive age. A delay of up to 9 years is estimated between the onset of symptoms and the diagnosis of endometriosis. Endometriosis is currently defined as the presence of endometrial epithelial and stromal cells at ectopic sites; however, advances in research on endometriosis have some authors believing that endometriosis should be re-defined as "a fibrotic condition in which endometrial stroma and epithelium can be identified". There are several theories on the etiology of the disease, but the origin of endometriosis remains unclear. This review addresses the role of microRNAs (miRNAs), which are naturally occurring post-transcriptional regulatory molecules, in endometriotic lesion development, the inflammatory environment within the peritoneal cavity, including the role that cytokines play during the development of the disease, and how animal models have helped in our understanding of the pathology of this enigmatic disease.

Abstract
Reproductive success consists of a sequential events chronology, starting with the ovum fertilization, implantation of the embryo, placentation, and cellular processes like proliferation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, endocrinology, or metabolic changes, which taken together finally conduct the birth of healthy offspring. Currently, many factors are known that affect the regulation and proper maintenance of pregnancy in humans, domestic animals, or rodents. Among the determinants of reproductive success should be distinguished: the maternal microenvironment, genes, and proteins as well as numerous pregnancy hormones that regulate the most important processes and ensure organism homeostasis. It is well known that white adipose tissue, as the largest endocrine gland in our body, participates in the synthesis and secretion of numerous hormones belonging to the adipokine family, which also may regulate the course of pregnancy. Unfortunately, overweight and obesity lead to the expansion of adipose tissue in the body, and its excess in both women and animals contributes to changes in the synthesis and release of adipokines, which in turn translates into dramatic changes during pregnancy, including those taking place in the organ that is crucial for the proper progress of pregnancy, i.e. the placenta. In this chapter, we are summarizing the current knowledge about levels of adipokines and their role in the placenta, taking into account the physiological and pathological conditions of pregnancy, e.g. gestational diabetes mellitus, preeclampsia, or intrauterine growth restriction in humans, domestic animals, and rodents.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Progesterone deficiency during pregnancy may lead to various complications, including first-trimester miscarriage, which is the most common pregnancy complication. However, progesterone therapy may play a role in pregnancy maintenance and foetal development. The aim of this scoping review is to present evidence on the link between progesterone deficiency and first-trimester miscarriage among pregnant women and assess the impact of progesterone therapy on foetal development. Methods: A comprehensive global systematic search of mainly primary research studies was conducted using several databases. Peer-reviewed studies published between 2010 and 2023 were included. The scoping review was conducted using the framework outlined by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) and reported using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses-Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) statement. Results: Twenty-three articles (which included 35,862 participants) were included in the analysis. Most studies were conducted in mid- to high-income countries. All 23 articles reported a significant positive relationship between progesterone deficiency and first-trimester miscarriage. Furthermore, the majority of studies reported a higher risk of miscarriage when lower levels of progesterone are combined with other declined hormones. While most studies reported that progesterone therapy may reduce the rate of first-trimester miscarriage among pregnant women, no evidence of health-related harm to offspring development was reported. Conclusions: The findings from this systematic-scoping review indicate possible benefits of progesterone replacement therapy in maintaining a healthy pregnancy and foetal development. Rigorous studies that include large sample sizes and systematic reviews are required to confirm these findings further.

Abstract
Males and females experience different trajectories of neuromuscular function across the lifespan, with females demonstrating accelerated deconditioning in later life. We hypothesize that the menopause is a critical period in the female lifespan, during which the dramatic reduction in sex hormone concentrations negatively impacts synaptic input to the motoneuron pool, as well as motor unit discharge properties.

Abstract
Gestational hyperandrogenism is a risk factor for adverse maternal and offspring outcomes with effects likely mediated in part via disruptions in maternal lipid homeostasis. Using a translationally relevant sheep model of gestational testosterone (T) excess that manifests maternal hyperinsulinemia, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), and adverse offspring cardiometabolic outcomes, we tested if gestational T excess disrupts maternal lipidome. Dimensionality reduction models following shotgun lipidomics of gestational day 127.1 ± 5.3 (term 147 days) plasma revealed clear differences between control and T-treated sheep. Lipid signatures of gestational T-treated sheep included higher phosphoinositides (PI 36:2, 39:4) and lower acylcarnitines (CAR 16:0, 18:0, 18:1), phosphatidylcholines (PC 38:4, 40:5) and fatty acids (linoleic, arachidonic, Oleic). Gestational T excess activated phosphatidylethanolamines (PE) and PI biosynthesis. The reduction in key fatty acids may underlie IUGR and activated PI for the maternal hyperinsulinemia evidenced in this model. Maternal circulatory lipids contributing to adverse cardiometabolic outcomes are modifiable by dietary interventions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study examined whether age at first birth (AFB) is associated with the prevalence of frailty in middle-aged and older women. METHODS The study included 10,828 women (age ≥ 45 years) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (1999-2018) in the United States. AFB data were collected using a standardized reproductive health questionnaire. Frailty was measured using a 53-item frailty index and was diagnosed if the score on that index was over 0.21. Survey-weighted logistic regression models were used to assess the association between AFB and the prevalence of frailty. A survey-weighted restricted cubic spline (RCS) model was used to determine the dose-response relationship between AFB and frailty. Mediation analyses were performed to estimate the mediated effects of education levels, family poverty income ratio, and parity on the association between AFB and the likelihood of frailty. Finally, sensitivity and subgroup analyses were conducted to validate the robustness of our findings. RESULTS Among the 10,828 women, 3828 (35.4 %) had frailty. The RCS depicted a U-shaped association between AFB and frailty. Compared with the women in the reference group (AFB: 33-35 years), women in the other groups (AFB: < 18, 18-20, 21-23, and 24-26 years) had a higher likelihood of frailty, with respective odds ratios (95 % confidence intervals) of 3.02 (1.89-4.83), 2.32 (1.54-3.50), 1.83 (1.19-2.81), and 1.64 (1.07-2.53). However, no statistically significant differences were detected for women with AFB of 27-29, 30-32, or > 35 years compared with the reference group. Education levels, family poverty income ratio, and parity significantly mediated the approximately linear negative association between AFB and frailty in the subset of women with AFB of ≤32 years and the mediation proportions were 23.4 %, 32.4 %, and 18.3 %, respectively (all p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Based on our results, we conclude that early AFB is associated with a higher likelihood of frailty in middle-aged and older women.

Abstract
While the importance of human milk in shaping infant immune function is well established, the impact of at-the-nipple (ATN) breastfeeding on maternal immune status has been understudied. Since lactation evolved to support infant survival and boost maternal fitness, we predict that ATN breastfeeding will confer benefits on maternal immune function. We measure the absolute and relative frequency of different infant feeding methods (ATN breastfeeding, pumping, donated milk, other supplementation) used by postpartum women in Seattle, WA (USA). We implement Bayesian modeling to estimate the effects of ATN breastfeeding on diurnal change in secretion rate of "pro-inflammatory" salivary cytokines and C-reactive protein (CRP). Our results show that most mothers in our sample used a variety of infant feeding methods, with pumping as the most common alternative to ATN breastfeeding. We find that ATN breastfeeding is associated with non-linear effects on diurnal IL-8 and CRP. Furthermore, we find that women who report zero versus ubiquitous ATN breastfeeding exhibit opposing diurnal patterns in CRP secretion rate. This study provides evidence that variation in maternal lactation practices corresponds to differences in maternal immune responses, highlighting how measuring lactation as a continuous variable can further enhance understanding of postpartum maternal physiology.

Abstract
Introduction The goal of this review is to highlight the significance of dental health during pregnancy, carefully investigate how it affects the health of both the mother and the fetus, and provide practical prevention strategies and therapeutic choices. The main goal is to increase awareness of potential dental problems during pregnancy, understand their effects on the expectant mothers and the fetus's health, and outline practical prevention and management techniques. Data sources Conduct a rapid literature search using databases focusing on papers published in English within the last ten years, such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and other relevant platforms from 1st September to 1st October 2023. Use appropriate keywords and search terms related to dental problems, pregnancy, dental care in Bangladesh, and related topics. Include articles published in peer-reviewed journals, books, reports, and official documents. Study selection Studies selected on common pregnancy-related dental issues include gingivitis, periodontitis, tooth erosion, xerostomia, tooth decay, and pregnancy tumours. The prevention measures are conditions include regular dental check-ups, maintaining good oral hygiene, and professional cleanings. Treatment options range from scaling and root surface instrumentation to dental restorations and surgical removal, if necessary. Conclusion The different dental problems that may develop during pregnancy along with their possible effects on oral health and general wellbeing. Underscores the importance of prioritizing dental care during pregnancy to ensure the well-being of both the mother and the developing baby. Clinical significance Dental issues that arise during pregnancy affect both the mother and the fetus, and if left untreated, can result in pain, swelling, and even tooth loss. Recent studies suggest a connection between periodontal disease and unfavourable pregnancy outcomes, emphasizing the importance of precise dental care throughout pregnancy. To minimize hazards and advance general well-being, it is essential to give oral health priority throughout pregnancy. For effective management, routine exams, preventative measures, and oral hygiene practices are crucial. Dental professionals are crucial in helping expecting mothers maintain their best oral health for the sake of both the mother and the unborn child.

Abstract
Important sex-related differences have been observed in the onset, prevalence, and clinical phenotype of depression, based on several epidemiological studies. Social, behavioural, and educational factors have a great role in underlying this bias; however, also several biological factors are extensively involved. Indeed, sexually dimorphic biological systems might represent the underlying ground for these disparities, including cerebral structures and neural correlates, reproductive hormones, stress response pathways, the immune system and inflammatory reaction, metabolism, and fat distribution. Furthermore, in this perspective, it is also important to consider and focus the attention on specific ages and life stages of individuals: indeed, women experience during their life specific periods of reproductive transitional phases, which are not found in men, that represent windows of particular psychological vulnerability. In addition to these, other biologically related risk factors, including the occurrence of sleep disturbances and the exposure to childhood trauma, which are found to differentially affect men and women, are also putative underlying mechanisms of the clinical bias of depression. Overall, by taking into account major differences which characterize men and women it might be possible to improve the diagnostic process, as well as treat more efficiently depressed individuals, based on a more personalized medicine and research.

Abstract
Given that the host-microbe interaction is shaped by the immune system response, it is important to understand the key immune system-microbiota relationship during the period from conception to the first years of life. The present work summarizes the available evidence concerning human reproductive microbiota, and also, the microbial colonization during early life, focusing on the potential impact on infant development and health outcomes. Furthermore, we conclude that some dietary strategies including specific probiotics and other-biotics could become potentially valuable tools to modulate the maternal-neonatal microbiota during this early critical window of opportunity for targeted health outcomes throughout the entire lifespan.

The intent of this chapter is to provide a basic overview and explanation of the neuroendocrine system responses to an exercise session in healthy adults. Specifically, the physiologic mechanisms for inducing the hormonal responses of this system and the scope of such responses are addressed. Additionally, factors that augment or attenuate exercise hormonal responses are presented as well as issues related to sex differences, and exercise-related hormonal dysfunction.

Abstract
Maternal endocrine homeostasis is vital to a successful pregnancy, regulated by several hormones such as human chorionic gonadotropin, estrogen, leptin, glucocorticoid, insulin, prostaglandin, and others. Endocrine stress during pregnancy can modulate nutrient availability from mother to fetus, alter fetoplacental growth and reproductive functions. Endocrine disrupters such as bisphenols (BPs) and phthalates are exposed in our daily life's highest volume. Therefore, they are extensively scrutinized for their effects on metabolism, steroidogenesis, insulin signaling, and inflammation involving obesity, diabetes, and the reproductive system. BPs have their structural similarity to 17-β estradiol and their ability to bind as an agonist or antagonist to estrogen receptors to elicit an adverse response to the function of the endocrine and reproductive system. While adults can negate the adverse effects of these endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), fetuses do not equip themselves with enzymatic machinery to catabolize their conjugates. Therefore, EDC exposure makes the fetoplacental developmental window vulnerable to programming in utero. On the one hand prenatal BPs and phthalates exposure can impair the structure and function of the ovary and uterus, resulting in placental vascular defects, inappropriate placental expression of angiogenic growth factors due to altered hypothalamic response, expression of nutrient transporters, and epigenetic changes associated with maternal endocrine stress. On the other, their exposure during pregnancy can affect the offspring's metabolic, endocrine and reproductive functions by altering fetoplacental programming. This review highlights the latest development in maternal metabolic and endocrine modulations from exposure to estrogenic mimic chemicals on subcellular and transgenerational changes in placental development and its effects on fetal growth, size, and metabolic & reproductive functions.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Pregnancy denial is the lack of awareness of being pregnant. The aim of the review is to understand why the affected women do not recognize the signs of pregnancy. RECENT FINDINGS Twelve case reports of pregnancy denial were published in the last ten years. While in five cases the women had an underlying mental disorder, the rest of the cases involved women who either exhibited no physical symptoms or perceived themselves to be not pregnant despite the symptoms (i.e., repression mechanisms). Pregnancy denial is considered to be a pathological issue, a likely consequence of trauma, the wish to not have a child, or a psychiatric problem. However, it appears that the majority of cases cannot be linked to any of the above reasons. We argue, therefore, that, in most cases, pregnancy denial is not associated with mental or physiological problems. Under certain circumstances, it can affect any woman.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary pattern involving meat consumption has an association with serum uric acid level which subsequently has an impact on moods. However, this relationship is not clearly established in pregnant women, particularly those who are accustomed to daily meat consumption. OBJECTIVE This study investigated the relationship between red meat consumption and uric acid level and the subsequent impact on mood disorders in 1st trimester pregnant women. METHODOLOGY A total of 92 pregnant women in their first trimester (8-12 weeks), were selected for this study. Socio-demographic characteristics including age, body mass index (BMI), educational qualification, sleep hours, blood pressure and exercise status were recorded. To assess meat consumption, classification based on the recruited population consumption was divided into low and high meat consumption groups. Serum uric acid level was estimated in plasma. Mood disorder, namely, depression and anxiety were assessed using a self-reported Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) questionnaire. Collected data was analysed using different statistical tools. RESULTS Logistic regression analysis showed higher odds of depression (OR = 0.059, 95% CI 0.02-0.172, p < 0.001) and anxiety (OR = 0.144, 95% CI 0.055-0.375, p < 0.001) in the high meat consumption group. Further, the potential confounders, high BMI and less exercise increased the odds of depression and anxiety in high meat consumption groups. Linear regression analysis revealed a significant influence of meat consumption on uric acid level (F (1, 90) = 305.385, p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS The study recommends regular clinical screening of mood disorders, and recommends reasonable consumption of lean meat and/or replacing some portions with fish, as well as, a commitment to eating a healthy, balanced diet. It also suggests extensive studies because it could be linked to postpartum mood disorders among those who consume red meat every day.

Abstract
Background: This research delves into the association between altered lipid profiles and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), shedding light on cardiovascular implications in maternal health. Methods: A cohort of 83 pregnant women was studied, with 48.19% diagnosed with HDP. This investigation primarily focused on Apolipoprotein B (ApoB) and Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) as indicators of cardiovascular health. A comparative examination was conducted to determine discrepancies in the ApoB and Lp(a) levels between standard pregnancies and those presenting with HDP. Results: Significant elevations in ApoB (p value = 0.0486) and Lp(a) (p value < 0.0001) levels were observed in pregnant women with HDP compared to their counterparts with typical pregnancies. The pronounced link between heightened ApoB and Lp(a) concentrations and HDP persisted, even considering pregnancy's distinct physiological conditions. Conclusions: Our research accentuates the crucial role of early detection and specialized handling of cardiovascular risks in expectant mothers, especially those predisposed to HDP. The study indicates ApoB and Lp(a)'s potential as reliable markers for gauging cardiovascular threats during gestation. Furthermore, our findings suggest an integrative care approach and guidance for pregnant women, aspiring to enhance cardiovascular health in the postpartum phase.

Abstract
Background Conditions in utero influence intrauterine and postnatal infant growth and a few studies indicate that maternal inflammation and insulin resistance might affect birth and breastfeeding outcomes. Furthermore, hormones in human milk (HM) may influence infant appetite-regulation and thereby milk intake, but the associations are less understood. Objective (1) To investigate associations between maternal inflammatory, lipid and metabolic markers and birth and breastfeeding outcomes, and (2) to assess predictors of maternal inflammatory, lipid and metabolic markers in pregnancy. Methods Seventy-one mother-infant dyads participating in the Mothers, Infants and Lactation Quality (MILQ) study were included in the present study. Fasting blood samples were collected around 28th gestational week, and HM samples at three time points from 1.0 to 8.5 months, where milk intake was assessed using 24-h test weighing. Maternal plasma inflammatory, lipid and metabolic markers included high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), tumor-necrosis factor-α (TNFα), interferon-γ (IFNγ), Interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, high-, low-, and very-low-density lipoprotein (HDL, LDL, VLDL), total-cholesterol, triglycerides, leptin, adiponectin, insulin, C-peptide, the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and glucose concentration at t = 120 min following an oral glucose tolerance test. Of these, TNFα, IFNγ, IL-6, IL-8, leptin, adiponectin and insulin were also measured in HM samples. Results HDL in pregnancy was inversely associated with gestational age (GA) at birth and GA-adjusted birthweight z-score, whereas triglycerides and glucose (t = 120) were positively associated with GA-adjusted birthweight z-score. Higher hs-CRP, VLDL and triglycerides were associated with a higher placental weight. Furthermore, higher HDL, insulin, leptin and HOMA-IR were associated with longer duration of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF). Higher pre-pregnancy BMI was the main predictor of higher levels of hs-CRP, log-TNFα, leptin, insulin, C-peptide, and HOMA-IR. Conclusion Maternal lipid and metabolic markers influenced birthweight z-score and placental weight as well as duration of EBF. Furthermore, pre-pregnancy BMI and maternal age predicted levels of several inflammatory and metabolic markers during pregnancy. Our findings indicate that maternal lipid and metabolic profiles in pregnancy may influence fetal growth and breastfeeding, possibly explained by overweight and/or higher placental weight. Abstract
Triptorelin, a synthetic gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist, has garnered increasing attention for its profound effects on endocrine profiles across diverse populations. This review article explores triptorelin's impact on women's health by examining its effects on healthy individuals, those with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and those experiencing hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA). The mechanism of triptorelin involves a transient surge in gonadotropin release, followed by receptor desensitization, leading to downregulation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. In healthy women, triptorelin's controlled modulation of the HPG axis is a foundation for assisted reproduction techniques. In PCOS, it offers promise in restoring ovulatory function and mitigating hyperandrogenism. For HA individuals, triptorelin's potential to restore proper GnRH pulsatility emerges as a therapeutic avenue. This review emphasizes the importance of personalized approaches based on specific health conditions, highlighting triptorelin's versatility and potential applications beyond its current scope. As research progresses, triptorelin's role in endocrine management is poised to reshape women's health by optimizing hormonal equilibrium and overall well-being.

Abstract
Adverse influences during pregnancy are associated with a range of unfavorable outcomes for the developing offspring. Maternal psychosocial stress, exposure to infections and nutritional imbalances are known risk factors for neurodevelopmental derangements and according psychiatric and neurological manifestations later in offspring life. In this context, the maternal immune activation (MIA) model has been extensively used in preclinical research to study how stimulation of the maternal immune system during gestation derails the tightly coordinated sequence of fetal neurodevelopment. The ensuing consequence of MIA for offspring brain structure and function are majorly manifested in behavioral and cognitive abnormalities, phenotypically presenting during the periods of adolescence and adulthood. These observations have been interpreted within the framework of the "double-hit-hypothesis" suggesting that an elevated risk for neurodevelopmental disorders results from an individual being subjected to two adverse environmental influences at distinct periods of life, jointly leading to the emergence of pathology. The early postnatal period, during which the caregiving parent is the major determinant of the newborn´s environment, constitutes a window of vulnerability to external stimuli. Considering that MIA not only affects the developing fetus, but also impinges on the mother´s brain, which is in a state of heightened malleability during pregnancy, the impact of MIA on maternal brain function and behavior postpartum may importantly contribute to the detrimental consequences for her progeny. Here we review current information on the interaction between the prenatal and postnatal maternal environments in the modulation of offspring development and their relevance for the pathophysiology of the MIA model.

Abstract
The cornea is a hormone-responsive tissue that responds to changing levels of female sex hormones. This review focuses on the structural and functional changes in the human cornea associated with the hormonal milestones of menarche, pregnancy, and menopause, as well as consequences stemming from the use of exogenous sex hormones for fertility control and replacement. Articles were identified by searching PubMed without language or region restrictions. The primary outcomes evaluated were changes in central corneal thickness (CCT), intraocular pressure (IOP), and quality of the ocular tear film. The potential impact of hormone-associated changes on the diagnosis and surgical management of common eye diseases, as well as the potential use of sex hormones as therapeutic agents is also considered. Understanding the physiological effects of female sex hormones on the cornea is important because that knowledge can shape the management decisions physicians and women face about ocular health across their life stages.

Abstract
A balanced diet and healthy social habits are two pillars on which the health of the population is based. Therefore, the efforts of the health system should be aimed at prevention. To this end, it is important to know the prevalence of these habits in different population groups and how they vary according to socioeconomic variables. This is an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study using surveys. A questionnaire was designed to explore a set of variables related to diet and an active lifestyle and was validated through a pilot study and a nominal group. Dissemination was carried out online through social networks by means of non-probabilistic snowball sampling, obtaining a sample of 14.784 women aged between 18 and 45 years. Bivariate comparative analyses were performed using the Mann-Whitney method and the principal component analysis (PCA) method of dimensionality reduction was used to study the relationships between ordinal numerical variables. Results indicate that nutrition was influenced by the age of the sample; adult women have better nutrition than younger women, although they are more sedentary and do less sport. Women with higher education and a medium-high income have better nutrition and healthier lifestyles and a lower BMI and higher self-perceived health status than women with basic education and a lower income. It was concluded that a higher level of income and a higher level of education generally lead to a healthier lifestyle. Spanish women aged 18-45 years need to make changes in their nutrition and lead a more active life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The production of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) by the placental trophoblast cells is essential for maintaining a normal pregnancy. Aberrant hCG levels are associated with reproductive disorders. The protein of hCG is a dimer consisting of an α subunit and a β subunit. The β subunit is encoded by the CGB gene and is unique to hCG. Growth differentiation factor-11 (GDF-11), a member of the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily, is expressed in the human placenta and can stimulate trophoblast cell invasion. However, whether the expression of CGB and the production of hCG are regulated by GDF-11 remains undetermined. METHODS Two human choriocarcinoma cell lines, BeWo and JEG-3, and primary cultures of human cytotrophoblast (CTB) cells were used as experimental models. The effects of GDF-11 on CGB expression and hCG production, as well as the underlying mechanisms, were explored by a series of in vitro experiments. RESULTS Our results show that treatment of GDF-11 downregulates the expression of CGB and the production of hCG in both BeWo and JEG-3 cells as well as in primary CTB cells. Using a pharmacological inhibitor and siRNA-mediated approach, we reveal that both ALK4 and ALK5 are required for the GDF-11-induced downregulation of CGB expression. In addition, treatment of GDF-11 activates SMAD2/3 but not SMAD1/5/8 signaling pathways. Moreover, both SMAD2 and SMAD3 are involved in the GDF-11-downregulated CGB expression. ELISA results show that the GDF-11-suppressed hCG production requires the ALK4/5-mediated activation of SMAD2/3 signaling pathways. CONCLUSIONS This study not only discovers the biological function of GDF-11 in the human placenta but also provides important insights into the regulation of the expression of hCG. Video Abstract.

Abstract
Introduction Change in the composition of intestinal microbiota is associated with metabolic disorders such as gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Methods To understand how the microbiota impacts the development of gestational diabetes mellitus, we profiled the intestinal microbiome of 54 pregnant women, including 27 GDM subjects, by employing 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Additionally, we conducted targeted metabolomics assays to validate the identified pathways with overrepresented metabolites. Results We evaluated the patterns of changing abundances of operational taxonomic units (OTU) between GDM and the healthy counterparts over three timepoints. Based on the significant OTUs, we inferred 132 significantly altered metabolic pathways in GDM. And identified two overrepresented metabolites of pregnancy hormone, butyrate and mevalonate, as potential intermediary metabolites of intestinal microbiota in GDM. Finally, we validated the impacts of the intestinal microbiota on GDM by demonstrating consistent changes of the serum levels of progesterone, estradiol, butyrate, and mevalonate in an independent cohort. Discussion Our findings confirm that alterations in the microbiota play a role in the development of GDM by impacting the metabolism of pregnancy hormones. This provides a novel perspective on the pathogenesis of GDM and introduces potential biomarkers that can be used for early diagnosis and prevention of the disease.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to compare the prevalence of the nasopharyngeal carriage of culturable microorganisms in the microbiota of asymptomatic women with a physiological pregnancy (PW) and nonpregnant women (NPW). Nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from 53 PW and 30 NPW to detect bacterial and fungal colonization. Isolates were identified using the culture method and the MALDI-TOF MS technique. The nasopharyngeal microbiota (NPM) partially differed between PW and NPW. These differences in the frequency of nasopharyngeal colonization between the PW and NPW groups were not statistically significant (p > 0.05); all cases were colonized by bacteria and only two cases in the PW group were colonized by yeasts, namely, Rhodotorula spp. High levels of staphylococcal colonization, including predominantly coagulase-negative staphylococci and S. aureus in the nasopharyngeal sample, were present in both groups. The reduced number of Gram-negative rods colonized in the cases studied was seen in samples from the NPW group, particularly with Enterobacterales, and anaerobic Cutibacterium spp. were isolated only in the PW group (p < 0.05). Moreover, a higher carriage rate of Enterobacter aerogenes colonization was statistically significant (p < 0.05) and correlated with the NPW group. Pregnancy may disturb the composition of the NPM represented by commensals and opportunistic bacteria and promote yeast colonization as compared to nonpregnant women.

Abstract
Cat reproduction is important for research and commercial cat breeding operations, as well as the control of feral cat populations. This review describes studies examining reproductive performance in laboratory cats, privately-owned breeding cats, and feral cats, including sexual maturity, the estrous cycle (timing, behavior, and hormonal changes), seasonal effects, gestation length, parturition (litter size, litter weight, and parity effects), mortality, and stillbirth. Because the studies highlighted in this review vary in the location where they were conducted and the region's management practices, these factors should be considered depending on the goal of the reader when interpreting these data. Furthermore, standard practices were lacking in some earlier studies of cat reproduction, so they should be considered for historical context only and may not reflect the actual reproductive potential of cats as described in the new studies due to advancements in husbandry practices and nutrition. The objective of this manuscript is to review scientific studies examining reproductive performance in laboratory cats, privately-owned breeding cats, and feral cats. The data sources for this manuscript included original research publications and scientific reviews from the veterinary literature. All reviews or studies that augmented the knowledge of the reproduction of domestic cats in laboratories, catteries, and feral colonies were included. Most studies on laboratory cats have been conducted under the conditions of controlled light cycles, temperature, and diet. The environmental effects on reproductive behavior are subtler than those in feral cat studies, but the effects are still distinguishable. Cat breeding studies focus on genetic effects and rely heavily on surveys or questionnaires from cat breeders. However, the reliability of these data can be variable, in part because the methodology of record-keeping and other protocols are generally not reported. In addition, laboratory animal management standards, specific pathogen-free cat colonies, and nutritional requirements for cats were not fully established until the 1970s. Reproductive outcomes of earlier studies may not be a true representation of the modern cat due to more advanced, regulated husbandry practices, including improvements in nutrition, resulting in diets formulated to meet feline requirements for every life stage.

Abstract
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a challenging psychological disorder faced by 10-30% of mothers across the globe. In India, it occurs among 22% of mothers. Its aetiology and pathophysiology aren't fully understood as of today but multiple theories on the interplay of hormones, neurotransmitters, genetics, epigenetics, nutrients, socio-environmental factors, etc. exist. Nutrients are not only essential for the synthesis of neurotransmitters, but they may also indirectly influence genomic pathways that methylate DNA, and there is evidence for molecular associations between nutritional quality and psychological well-being. Increased behavioural disorders have been attributed to macro- and micronutrient deficiencies, and dietary supplementation has been effective in treating several neuropsychiatric illnesses. Nutritional deficiencies occur frequently in women, especially during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The aim of this study was to perform a comprehensive literature review of evidence-based research in order to identify, gather and summarize existing knowledge on PPD's aetiology, pathophysiology, and the role of nutrients in its prevention as well as management. The possible mechanisms of action of nutrients are also presented here. Study findings show that the risk of depression increases when omega-3 fatty acid levels are low. Both fish oil and folic acid supplements have been used to effectively treat depression. Antidepressant efficacy is lowered by folate insufficiency. Folate, vitamin B12, iron, etc. deficiencies are more prevalent in depressed people than in non-depressed people. Serum cholesterol levels and plasma tryptophan levels are found to be inversely correlated with PPD. Serum vitamin D levels were associated inversely with perinatal depression. These findings highlight the importance of adequate nutrition in the antepartum period. Given that nutritional therapies can be affordable, safe, simple to use, and are typically well-accepted by patients, more focus should be placed on dietary variables in PPD.

Abstract
Postmenopausal status is a risk factor for distal sensory polyneuropathy-the most common type of peripheral neuropathy. We aimed to investigate associations between reproductive factors and history of exogenous hormone use with distal sensory polyneuropathy among postmenopausal women in the United States using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2004, and to explore the modifying effects of ethnicity on these associations. We conducted a cross-sectional study among postmenopausal women aged ≥ 40 years. Women with a history of diabetes, stroke, cancer, cardiovascular disease, thyroid disease, liver disease, weak or failing kidneys, or amputation were excluded. Distal sensory polyneuropathy was measured using a 10-g monofilament test, and a questionnaire was used to collect data on reproductive history. Multivariable survey logistic regression was used to test the association between reproductive history variables and distal sensory polyneuropathy. In total, 1144 postmenopausal women aged ≥ 40 years were included. The adjusted odds ratios were 8.13 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.24-53.28] and 3.18 (95% CI 1.32-7.68) for age at menarche < 11 years and time since menopause > 20 years, respectively, which were positively associated with distal sensory polyneuropathy; adjusted odds ratios were 0.45 for the history of breastfeeding (95% CI 0.21-0.99) and 0.41 for exogenous hormone use (95% CI 0.19-0.87) were negatively associated. Subgroup analysis revealed ethnicity-based heterogeneity in these associations. Age at menarche, time since menopause, breastfeeding, and exogenous hormone use were associated with distal sensory polyneuropathy. Ethnicity significantly modified these associations.
