Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to evaluate associations of early-pregnancy plasma per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) with maternal post-pregnancy weight trajectory parameters. METHODS We studied 1106 Project Viva participants with measures of early-pregnancy plasma concentrations of eight PFAS. We measured weight at in-person visits at 6 months and 3, 7, and 12 years after pregnancy and collected self-reported weight via annual questionnaires up to 17 years after pregnancy. Weight trajectory parameters were estimated via the Superimposition by Translation and Rotation model. We assessed individual and joint effects of PFAS with trajectory parameters using linear regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR). RESULTS Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) concentrations were positively associated with weight trajectory magnitude in both linear regression (0.8 kg [95% CI: 0.1 to 1.4] per doubling of PFOS) and BKMR analyses (2.6 kg [95% CI: 1.4 to 3.8] per increase from 25th to 75th percentile of PFOS concentrations). Conversely, in BKMR analyses, perfluorononanoate was negatively associated with trajectory magnitude (-2.0 kg [95% CI: -2.9 to -1.1]). In stratified linear regression, older-aged participants had more pronounced positive associations of PFOS, perfluorooctanoate, and 2-(N-ethyl-perfluorooctane sulfonamido) acetate with weight trajectory velocity. No associations were observed with the overall PFAS mixture. CONCLUSIONS Select PFAS, assessed in pregnancy, may affect maternal weight trajectories spanning 17 years after pregnancy, especially for older-aged individuals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES While most women experience weight gain during the menopausal transition, a subset successfully maintains a healthy weight. This study explores the determinants influencing different weight experiences during the menopausal transition, using the Health Belief Model (HBM). DESIGN Qualitative design. METHODS Semi-structured individual interviews with 62 Portuguese post-menopausal women were performed. Among them, 31 women maintained a normal weight from pre-menopause to post-menopause, with a variation not exceeding 5% of pre-menopausal weight, while another 31 women transitioned from normal weight in pre-menopause to overweight or obesity in post-menopause, with an increase above 7% of pre-menopausal weight. Deductive-dominant content analysis and multiple correspondence analysis were performed. RESULTS Prominent differences exist between the Unhealthy Weight Gain Group (UWG-G) and the Healthy Weight Maintenance Group (HWM-G). The UWG-G lacks perceived susceptibility in pre-menopause and perceives obesity as stigmatizing. They prioritize immediate changes as benefits, while the HWM-G focuses on self-concept. Both groups face barriers like food cravings and weight loss challenges in middle-aged. For cues to action, the UWG-G emphasizes social support and self-care resources, while the HWM-G emphasizes age progression and healthy behaviour adherence. The HWM-G presents higher self-efficacy. CONCLUSION This study confirms the suitability of the HBM in understanding weight management beliefs among post-menopausal women, highlighting differences between women who maintain a healthy weight and those who experience weight gain during this life phase. This facilitates identifying key determinants (perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, cues to action and self-efficacy) crucial for future interventions in weight management.

Abstract
Menopause leads to a decline in estrogen levels, resulting in significant metabolic alterations that increase the risk of developing metabolic syndrome-a cluster of conditions including central obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. Traditional interventions such as hormone replacement therapy carry potential adverse effects, and lifestyle modifications alone may not suffice for all women. This review explores the potential role of palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), an endogenous fatty acid amide, in managing metabolic syndrome during the postmenopausal period. PEA primarily acts by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha (PPAR-α), influencing lipid metabolism, energy homeostasis, and inflammation. Evidence indicates that PEA may promote the browning of white adipocytes, enhancing energy expenditure and reducing adiposity. It also improves lipid profiles by boosting fatty acid oxidation and decreasing lipid synthesis, potentially lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride levels while increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Additionally, the anti-inflammatory properties of PEA enhance insulin sensitivity by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines that interfere with insulin signaling. PEA may aid in weight management by influencing appetite regulation and improving leptin sensitivity. Furthermore, its neuroprotective effects may address the mood disturbances and cognitive decline associated with menopause. Given these multifaceted biological activities and a favorable safety profile, PEA may represent a promising non-pharmacological supplement for managing metabolic syndrome in postmenopausal women. However, further large-scale clinical studies are necessary to establish its efficacy, optimal dosing, and long-term safety. If validated, PEA could become an integral part of strategies to improve metabolic and neuropsychological health outcomes in this population.

Abstract
AIM The aim was to investigate factors influencing obesity among stroke survivors based on demographics and lifestyle behaviors. BACKGROUND Stroke survivors are more likely to experience stroke recurrence within a few years. As obesity is a traditional risk factor for stroke, obesity should be managed in stroke survivors to prevent stroke recurrence. METHODS A cross-sectional secondary data analysis analyzed data from the 2017 United States Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey. Demographics, frequency of vegetable and fruit intake, smoking, alcohol use, physical activity, and sleep were examined. RESULTS Among 1032 stroke survivors, 57.8% were obese. Advanced age, female sex, veteran status, at least once-daily fruit intake, current smoking, and lack of physical activity were associated with obesity. CONCLUSION Stroke survivors should be encouraged to pursue healthy behaviors to manage obesity. Appropriate transitional care, including diet education and tailored exercise, can be an effective strategy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Little evidence exists on the effect of 17beta-estradiol plus norethisterone acetate on all the anthropometric indices. Hence, this systematic review and meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials was conducted to give an evidence-based report on the effect of 17beta-estradiol plus norethisterone acetate on anthropometric indices. METHODS The literature search was executed in databases including PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar to recognize clinical trials that examined the influence of 17beta-estradiol plus norethisterone acetate on obesity indices from database inception to Jan 2023. RESULTS Combined findings were generated from 20 eligible articles. The meta-analysis showed that body weight (Weighted Mean Difference (WMD): -0.47 kg, 95% CI: -1.32, 0.37, p = 0.274), body fat (WMD: 0.16 kg, 95% CI: -1.26, 1.59, p = 0.821), WHR (WMD: 0.001 kg, 95% CI: -0.006, 1.15, p = 0.872), and LBM (WMD: -0.02 kg, 95% CI: -1.19, 1.15, p = 0.970) were not modified in DHEA group compared to the control, but BMI levels were significantly reduced in 17beta-estradiol plus norethisterone acetate group (WMD: -0.15 kg/m2, 95% CI: -0.30, -0.008, p = 0.039). Moreover, based on intervention duration (months), a more significant reduction in BMI was found in trials that were performed on studies with ˃3 months duration (WMD: -0.176 kg/m2) than studies with ≤ 3 months (WMD: 0.05 kg/m2). CONCLUSION Administration of 17beta-estradiol plus norethisterone acetate for more than 3 months results in a decrease in BMI, which helps to reduce cardiovascular disease risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Selenium plays an important role in metabolic homeostasis. It has been suggested that it may also affect the expression and activity of PPAR-γ. The aim of study was to analyze the relationships between these variables in the context of the health of women, for whom the risk of MetS increases with age. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study involved 390 women in middle age. The stages of study: a survey-based part; anthropometric measurements; analysis of biological material (blood) in terms of glycemia, triglyceride, HDL, and selenium levels, as well as genetic analysis of the PPAR-γ polymorphisms. RESULTS It was found that selenium may moderate the effect of the G allele of the PPAR-γ gene on the occurrence of elevated waist circumference (OR=1.030, 95%CI 1.005-1.057, p=0.020); and the effect of the C (OR=1.077, 95%CI 1.009-1.149, p=0.026) and the G alleles (OR=1.052, 95%CI 1.025-1.080, p<0.000) on the odds of elevated blood pressure. Women in whom HDL levels were not significantly reduced, had higher selenium levels (p=0.007). CONCLUSIONS 1. The effect of selenium on MetS and its components has not been demonstrated. 2. The effect of individual alleles of the PPAR-γ gene on MetS and its components was not demonstrated. 3. The concentration of selenium may affect waist circumference in carriers of the G allele, and arterial hypertension in carriers of the C and G alleles by affecting the expression of PPAR-γ. 4. Higher selenium concentrations increased the odds of higher HDL levels in the group of subjects meeting the MetS criteria.

Abstract
(1) The perimenopausal period and menopause are physiological stages of a woman's life, and they may result in the occurrence of many health problems. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of sociodemographic factors related to the use of stimulants and the presence of menstruation and vitamin D concentration in women's health based on the analysis of their body composition parameters. (2) The study was carried out among 191 women. The diagnostic poll method was used, the levels of serum vitamin D were tested, and a body composition analysis was carried out. (3) Correlations between the vitamin D serum concentration and the following factors were established: adipose tissue mass (%) (rho = -0.18; p = 0.011), visceral adipose tissue (rho = -0.18; p = 0.014), BMI (rho = -0.22; p = 0.002), muscle mass (rho = -0.19; p = 0.008), osseous tissue mass (rho = -0.18; p = 0.013), and the phase angle value (rho = -0.2; p = 0.005). A statistically significant correlation between adipose tissue mass (Mdn = 34.4 vs. 32.2; p = 0.018; η2 = 0.029), visceral adipose tissue (Mdn = 8 vs. 6; p = 0.000; η2 = 0.106), and metabolic age (Mdn = 49 vs. 42; p = 0.000; η2 = 0.098) exists. (4) The following conclusions were made: (i) Menstruating women were characterized by increased body composition parameters, especially adipose tissue mass, visceral adipose tissue, and metabolic age. Greater muscle and osseous masses were noted in regularly menstruating women. (ii) A correlation between the vitamin D concentration and body composition parameters in the studied women was observed.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to assess the fatty acid profile of the whole blood of postmenopausal women, taking into account anthropometric parameters. The study involved 156 healthy women with an average age of 60 (SD = 6.3 years) years who were living in the West Pomerania Province (Poland). An original questionnaire was presented to all patients, conducting anthropometric measurements of them: weight, height, waist and hip circumference, body mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio (WHR) and body adipose index (BAI), as well as an assessment of the fatty acid profile by employing gas chromatography. It has been observed that in menopausal women, the concentration of C16:1 increases with respect to their BMI (r = 0.205 p = 0.01). Similar correlations were noted with regard to body weight (C16:1 r = 0.177 p = 0.029). It was also shown that the concentration of C18trans11 (r = -0.166 p = 0.039), 18:2n6 (r = -0.165 p = 0.04) and n6/n9 (r = -0.194 p = 0.015) were negatively correlated with respect to their WHR, while the levels C16:1 (r = 0.22 p = 0.006), C18:1n9 (r = 0.22 p = 0.007), C24:1 (r = 0.251 p = 0.002), MUFA (r = 0.227 p = 0.046) and n9 (r = 0.224 p = 0.005) were correlated positively with respect to their BAI. The fatty acid profile of the whole blood of postmenopausal women is modulated to a poor extent by anthropometric variables. Therefore, more prospective research is warranted.

Abstract
Weight retention and weight gain during the postpartum and midlife period subsequently increase the risk of chronic health conditions, thereby deteriorating the overall health. Dietary intervention is the pivotal component of sustainable weight management. However, in resource restricted settings, where dietitians may not be present, other healthcare professionals such as physicians, obstetricians, and paediatricians should play a vital role in providing timely weight management advice to these women. Therefore, this article provides dietary advice including the setting of realistic weight loss goals, identifying an individual's calorie needs, distribution of macronutrients and consideration of important micronutrients. Healthcare professionals can follow the stepwise approach to prescribe dietary advice to postpartum and midlife women for their weight management. Various dietary principles such as cultural and regional preferences of an individual, portion size, hypocaloric diets, nutrient-dense meals, eating habits, cultural beliefs and myths along with co-morbid conditions should be taken into consideration by healthcare professionals while providing the dietary prescription. Abstract
Menopause is characterized by endocrine and physiological changes and is often accompanied by increased body weight and cholesterol, glucose intolerance, and/or hypertension. These alterations are associated with increased risk for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and Type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) that may be moderate by dietary plant phenolic compounds. In this review, we examine the current evidence of the impact of a variety of plant products (foods, extracts, beverages) rich in a mixture of phenolics and polyphenols on: (i) glucose and insulin levels; (ii) lipid profile; (iii) blood pressure; and (iv) biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress in postmenopausal women. We critically evaluate both the results of a range of intervention studies conducted in this specific subpopulation and the level of evidence supporting the benefits of consuming those products after the menopause. Overall, the current available evidence does not allow for specific dietary recommendations of these plant products rich in phenolics and polyphenols in this high-risk subpopulation. Our data show rather variable and small effects of the different products examined on the cardiometabolic biomarkers and further support the need to: (1) improve the quality of the study designs and data reporting; and (2) understand the variability in the response of the different biomarkers and establish clear differences between healthy and cardiometabolic disease levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Time restricted feeding (TRF) involves confining the eating window to a specific number of hours, and fasting for the remaining hours of the day. OBJECTIVE This study examined if changes in body weight and metabolic risk factors during TRF, differ between premenopausal and postmenopausal women. METHODS This is a secondary analysis of an 8-week TRF study (4-6 h eating window, 18-20 h fasting window daily) conducted in adults with obesity. Male participants were excluded, and female subjects were classified in two groups based on menstrual status: premenopausal (n = 13), or postmenopausal (n = 19). Perimenopausal women were excluded from the original study. RESULTS Body weight decreased by week 8 in premenopausal women (-3.3 ± 0.4%) and postmenopausal women (-3.3 ± 0.5%) (main effect of time, P < 0.001), with no difference between groups (no group × time interaction). Adherence was excellent in both groups, with premenopausal women adhering to their prescribed eating window on 6.2 ± 0.1 d/week, and postmenopausal women adhering to their window on 6.2 ± 0.2 d/week. Fat mass, lean mass, fasting insulin, insulin resistance, and 8-isoprostane (marker of oxidative stress) were reduced similarly in both groups (main effect of time, P < 0.05 for all comparisons). Visceral fat mass, relative skeletal muscle index (RSMI), blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting glucose, HbA1c, TNF-alpha and IL-6 remained unchanged in both groups by week 8. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that the weight loss and metabolic benefits of TRF do not differ between premenopausal and postmenopausal women with obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND peri- and post-menopausal women exhibit a high tendency towards obesity and visceral fat deposition, which increases cardiometabolic risk. OBJECTIVE to evaluate through a prospective nutritional study the effect of carotenoid consumption on cardiometabolic risk biomarkers in peri- and post-menopausal women. MATERIAL AND METHODS twelve peri- and post-menopausal women without previous symptoms of cardiovascular disease, but with some cardiometabolic risk factor, were recruited. Their diet was supplemented during 4 weeks with orange-carrot juice, tomato juice, and boiled spinach, providing 415 mg of total carotenoids/week (carotenes, cryptoxanthin, lycopene, and lutein + zeaxanthin). At the beginning (TI) and at the end (TF) of the intervention period blood samples were drawn to measure biochemical parameters, oxidative stress, inflammation and endothelial function biomarkers, and plasma carotenoid levels. RESULTS at TF a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in LDL-cholesterol and atherogenic index, and an increase in HDL-cholesterol were observed. Plasma carotenoids increased significantly (p < 0.05) from 0.56 µg/mL at TI to 1.22 µg/mL at TF. Concurrently, a shift in oxidative stress and inflammation biomarkers was detected, with a decrease in plasma C-reactive protein and malonaldehyde levels, and an increase in adiponectin. However, endothelial dysfunction biomarkers (sVCAM and sICAM) and total antioxidant capacity remained unchanged. CONCLUSIONS dietary supplementation with carotenoids leads to an increase in plasma carotenoids, a decrease in atherogenic dyslipidemia, and an improvement in oxidative stress and inflammation biomarkers, which indicates a reduction in cardiometabolic risk.

Abstract
Understanding the predictors of weight loss with lifestyle interventions can help to ascertain the probable outcomes of individuals with obesity who undergo such interventions. This systematic review assessed the evidence of predictors of successful weight loss among individuals who are overweight or with obesity undergoing lifestyle interventions. Four electronic databases (PubMed, Cochrane Reviews, PsychInfo and Wiley) were searched to find relevant literature published in the past 20 years. A total of 1351 titles were identified in the initial search, of which 23 studies were finally included. Predictors were synthesized in the domains of socio-demographic factors, anthropometric parameters, psychological and behavioural factors and intervention-based factors. The overall quality of evidence on predictors was then appraised using an adapted GRADE approach. Patient-specific factors such as being male, older in age, having existing cardiometabolic comorbidities and limited fat intake were significantly associated with weight loss success. Amongst intervention specific predictors, greater initial weight loss and higher adherence to lifestyle advice were associated with greater weight loss success. In this review, initial weight loss came out to be as the most important predictor of successful weight loss outcome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS This study examined if the weight loss and metabolic benefits of alternate day fasting (ADF) varies according to sex and menopausal status in adults with obesity. METHODS AND RESULTS This secondary analysis pooled the data of men and women (n = 75) who participated in three 12-week ADF studies (500 kcal fast day; alternated with an ad libitum intake feast day). Body weight decreased in premenopausal women (-4.6 ± 3.2%), postmenopausal women (-6.5 ± 3.2%) and men (-6.2 ± 4.4%) (main effect of time, P < 0.001), with no difference between groups (no group × time interaction). Energy intake on fast days was higher than prescribed in all groups (∼400-500 excess kcal consumed), with no differences between groups. Fat mass, lean mass, fasting insulin, and insulin resistance, and blood pressure decreased similarly in all groups (main effect of time, P < 0.05 for all comparisons). LDL cholesterol decreased more in postmenopausal versus premenopausal women (group × time interaction, P = 0.01). Fasting glucose, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides remained unchanged in all groups. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that the weight loss and metabolic benefits of ADF do not generally vary according to sex or menopausal status in adults with obesity. Abstract
Objective: It is a common belief that menopausal women have greater difficulty losing weight. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of a Mediterranean diet (MD) to promote weight loss in postmenopausal women. All participants were prescribed a hypocaloric traditional MD, tailored to the individual. Subjects were asked not to begin any kind of physical activity. Body composition was measured at the beginning and after 8 weeks of treatment. In total, 89 women (age 52.8 ± 4.5 years, BMI 30.0 ± 5.2 kg/m2, fat mass 31.6 ± 10.5 kg) were divided into two groups: the first group consisted of fertile women over 45 years of age, the second group consisted of those diagnosed as menopausal. All women had an improvement in body composition (fat mass −2.3 ± 2.1 kg, p < 0.001; protein −0.1 ± 0.7 kg, p = 0.190) and blood pressure values. No differences were found between the two groups except for a higher reduction of low-density lipoprotein in the menopausal group (p = 0.035). A positive significant correlation between plant to animal protein ratio and fat-free mass variation was found in the menopausal group. These data suggest that a high adherence to a traditional MD would enable menopausal women to lose fat mass and maintain muscle mass with no significant difference to younger women. Fat mass reduction provides menopausal women with improved cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors.

Abstract
Menopausal transition is associated with weight gain and increased visceral fat distribution, which acts as an endocrine organ secreting the pro-inflammatory adipocytokines, which leads to metabolic disorders typical of menopause, including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Given the increasing number of aging population, the nutritional strategies to prevent obesity and obesity-related diseases in menopausal women is becoming a growing need and it should be one of the main objective for Nutritionists. The Mediterranean diet is characterized from foods with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions, such as extra-virgin olive oil, vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, red wine, and whole-grain cereals. Several evidences showed that the Mediterranean diet acts on both weight control and menopause, in addition to the known effects of the Mediterranean diet on cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. The Mediterranean diet is comparable with pharmacological interventions in terms of reducing the risk of obesity and cardiovascular and metabolic events. Considering that there are no specific dietary guidelines to manage weight in menopause, the aim of this review is to provide a nutritional guideline for the management of weight in menopause, particularly focusing on the Mediterranean diet.
